Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross and oh.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
One in Age Town. Good morning, and welcome to a
Monday edition of The Matt Thomas Show with Ross from
Salt Lake City. This is Sports Talk seven ninety. Ain't
nothing but a good time. Let's you went to school
with College Station Texas, Ross Villarel, I know you had
(00:35):
a good time in off the Texas this week day.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (00:38):
Or if you drove all the way to college all
the way to Austin from College Station and then got
a hotel and then paid for some very expensive tickets
and then went to the game and it was misty
and cold, and then you just had to get that
belt to ass Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
That would be such a shame if that happened.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
Hmmmm.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Well, the aggy in my life.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
After the movie is that that's a love song by
by Michael Jackson.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Correct? I believe yes. It was gonna be covered by
Belle biv Duvaux coming up here in a couple of years.
Oh man, what now?
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Sorry?
Speaker 2 (01:24):
He yeah, he he went to the movie. He didn't
want to be part.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
That is smart.
Speaker 5 (01:28):
You know what.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
The only thing you can do in life is learn
from your mistakes and improve. And I'm glad he's learning.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
He just in again. I love him for so many things.
He's one of the sweetest kids you'll ever know, very polite,
he is very.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
Sweet, extremely intelligent, nice.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Yeah really really and and just can't handle the Aggie's losing.
And so he has decided that he's not done forever,
but he's done for a little bit.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
Yeah, they're eleven in one.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
Come on, yeah, I mean they're going to the playoffs
and buck up, son, Yeah he can. He's gonna have
a playoff games, so I mean, yeah, you know, it
won't be a bye but'll but it'll be definitely a
chance to go back to cal Field one more time.
Oh what a day. And this is what I wish
we were back into year because there's so many things
I want to get to. We got a lot going on.
We got the local stuff going on. We have the
(02:15):
amazing drama that is what's happening in Baton, Rouge and Oxford, Mississippi.
And look, we got to get to the Texans opening up.
And of course here in Salt like put Belta ass on.
The Utah jazz, Oh my god, I mean the jazz. Okay,
that's another issue. I'm obsessed with watching people at the
(02:39):
Oxford County Airport booing Lane Kiff getting on the plane
to go to Baton Rouge.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
That's pretty.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
And then Charlie Weiss Junior I believe is the offensive
coordinator going with him to l s U two. They're
mfing him.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
Get a get a grip on life. If you're showing
up to the airport to booll coach, I mean, yeah,
you can be.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Mad, and I would be mad. It's fine, and we're
gonna get into that. But I mean, dude, go spend
time with your family.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
It's Thanksgiving weekend. Go go hug me mom. Don't be
a scream at Lane.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Yeah, you know what, go get that one last helping
of turkey because you just needed a Thanksgiving I mean
at Christmas time, just oh man, it was well. It
just shows you college sports carry a passion like no other.
I mean, I don't. I mean, look, look, University Houston's
had people leave over the years, and that's I get that.
But we don't run to a hobby to tell top well.
Speaker 4 (03:35):
I want to wear your kevil are. That's just a
little more, a little more dangerous.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
You mean a hobby, I would don't. I don't disagree
with that. Love your hobby, but a little rough over
those streets. What's the main road.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
Going broad Broadway? And don't break down on Broadway?
Speaker 2 (03:52):
You'll be all right part of that, all right?
Speaker 4 (03:54):
So, uh, kids can be very helpful for a couple
of bucks, that's right.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
Full disclosure. Uh. We had an afternoon game here in
Salt Lake yesterday, Yes, the last hour and change. As
I'm getting ready for the game and then calling it.
I've got the game on my phone, but I can't
ultimately watch every intricate detail. I did watch expanded highlights
this morning, so I have a pretty good grasp of things.
But I did look at your timeline, Ross, so you've
(04:19):
got a firm grilled What was a game yesterday.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
On the Texas not knowing the rules of football? How
many different rules did they break?
Speaker 2 (04:28):
I mean, how many illegal formations? Three?
Speaker 4 (04:32):
I don't know I've ever seen the sage right in
a college in one quarter. I don't know if I've
ever seen three illegal formations in one in one quarter
in college.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Or high school or middle school.
Speaker 4 (04:43):
This is the National Football League, the pinnacle of football.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Yeah, what are we doing here, folks?
Speaker 2 (04:50):
No, we are. We are obviously lacking discipline. But did
you think that Nick Caley opened the playbook up a
little bit? The end around the Nico Collins was was
a pleasant surprise.
Speaker 4 (04:59):
Yeah, But as somebody aptly pointed out on Twitter, if
that didn't work, what would be saying Nick Kayley's.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Getting too cute? Why would he do that?
Speaker 4 (05:07):
But like it almost got blown up in the backfield,
we would have all been screaming like what is the deal?
And the same thing with Sarkis and he did a
tight end to end around in the in the red
zone or in the goal to go, and I said,
I was like, man, what a brilliant play call. But
then I'm sitting there saying to myself, you know what,
if that didn't work, I'd be calling how calling him
an idiot. Yeah, that's just how it works. I mean
that's Nick Kayley's job.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Yeah, but a win is a win. I have also,
you know, it's been staring at these old misbooing people
at the Oxford Airport. I've also been staring at that
extra point by Cannie Fairbaird. I think it went in
where are we on that? But forgeting about your battle
at BIS, did it go interne to go out. I mean,
come on, what was the rule ruling if.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
Somebody had the other end zone view and it looks
good from the other end zone view.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
So I mean, I'm gonna be honest with you. Why
can't you know me? I love instant replay. I can't
get enough of it now. I know it's going to
delay people, but it's so once a week and I
get the call, right, why can't that be reviewed? I
don't know. Because they're saying because maybe angles are different,
I would assume, Well, here's the thing. They only put
(06:09):
end zone cameras in one side of the stadium, and
if I'm the NFL, first thing I'm doing is I'm
putting en zone cameras on both sides of the state.
I don't know. Again, I don't know the rules.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
But I think it curves out by the time it
hits the net, but as it crosses, as it crosses
the upright, it's in.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Yeah. Again, from the naked eye watching the view on
the CBS gave us, it looked like it it was
a little out. But it'll look we're watching it on television.
I mean, we don't have the firmest few of things.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
Yeah, Well, when they they did it on the broadcast,
so they paused it as it's crossing the upright and
it looks good.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Yeah, not by much.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
But no, yeah, by a hair. And but I'll say
the guy been at Salvator, whoever, who's it? No, it's not,
uh no Gen, so sorry Gene. Yeah, Gene is explaining
like if if it's even the ball is onto the
outside when it's over it, if the ball is inside
the outside edge of the upright, it's good.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
So and I think it was. It's very close.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
So yeah. The reason why I can't comment on at
Ross is because there's only one math class in my
entire life I failed, and it.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
Was Jeane Sterotor ben At Salvata as an NBA guy, right, yes,
decent guy, Jean Sterotor, not Bennet Salvator.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Sorry to both your families.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
That's fine. Gene Sterotor a college basketball ref and an
NFL referee at the same time, so he was he
was booed by two different fan bases.
Speaker 4 (07:30):
And I will always also say this though Jeane Sterator
generally agrees with the referees when it's clothed, Well, you're gonna.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Kind of yeah to because you don't want to get
you don't want to get out of group text and stuff.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
Yeah, you know what, that that didn't appear in the
extended NFL official highlights either, because I watched them too
after the game when I got home.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
It's funny how the past interference.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
That that was with the ball way out of bounds
didn't appear. It's funny how they protect the shield in
these little ways.
Speaker 6 (07:56):
It is.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
It is so yeah, we have these guys that are
good at a give you their unbiased viewpoint. Not half of
the time they do. They usually side with with their
with their fraternity mates. All right, look, we got so
much to get to today. I hope we get some
people calling in it. I mean, we are we on
today's We'll make sure.
Speaker 7 (08:16):
Okay, that's good.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Makes me happy, It makes me happy, happy to be here.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety so.
But again, that extra point miss would have couldn't clearly
changed things towards the end. I mean field goal time
extra you know, going overtime. Yeah, yeah, so it was
a it was a relatively huge not relative. It was
a huge part of the contest. But the Texans win,
(08:39):
and uh, unlike some people on Twitter, they still don't
control their own destiny. But they're getting closer to controlling it.
They still don't control it. We'll get to that. We
will get to the college football slate as your beloved
Longhorns get to win. Whoa, Aggies. I mean, you could
have killed two birds with one stone, the little brother
(09:02):
syndrome you've lived with for most of your life. That
could have been a race largely you probably you would
have gone to your first SEC championship. I mean, everything
was there and you just couldn't do it. You know.
Speaker 4 (09:15):
It's just such a shame.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
And how many, by the way this on this one,
how many plays on third down and six did the
Aggies get five? It felt like they were consistently running
a yard or two short on these crucial third and
long plays.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
Well, they couldn't have done it without my crowd noise help, Matt.
I lost my voice for a little bit on Friday recovery.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
I want to can we can we live vi carise
through you tell us about the entire day when we
come back. Sure, we'll get to that Texans win. I
want to hear from you, guys. We got to tell
the truth. Coming up today at twelve thirty because at
eleven fifteen, we're gonna hear from Mimico, Ryans Rockets annihilate
the Jazz last night, Lane Kiffin leaves Oxford for Baton
(09:58):
Rouge and uh what else we got going on? Oh
my Cougar's going to ninth win too. So that's all. Oh,
a very good weekend except for the Aggies. Oh by
the way, again, life is not lost. You're going to
the playoffs. Oh by the way, how much arguing did
you do with your people in the world that you
live in with about Texas getting into the playoff?
Speaker 3 (10:18):
Very little? Okay, but we can talk about that that they're.
Speaker 4 (10:23):
It's I mean, quite frankly, it's it's one of those
what do you always call it, Matt, where you can
you just argue both sides?
Speaker 2 (10:28):
Yeah you could, I mean I could if you if
you wanted to in the first hour give it to
me that the Texas gets in.
Speaker 4 (10:33):
I could a radio show that forced things. You would
come to me before and say, hey, Ross, argue for
Texas through and through, and I'm gonna argue against and
we'll make a we'll make a bit out of it, but.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
We'll call ourselves first.
Speaker 4 (10:45):
Take yes, and I'd be like, okay, I can do that.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
By the way, Uh stephen A screaming about the old
mis situation is is it makes me dumber. And that's
the only nega about doing the show in the in
the in the hotel is that I have limited television
acts as I can't walk. You know, I should just
turn it off.
Speaker 4 (11:06):
I've been telling you basically.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
We're saying that, you know, you know you can't win it.
Ever when in all Oxford because it's still a racist town.
I mean, come on, we got to get past that.
We got to get past that. And I just was
just like, I mean, there's arguments against is. Is LSU
a better job at all? Miss? Yes it is. I'm
sorry all miss fan, the three of you that may
(11:29):
be out there. It's a better job, but there are
reasons for that. It's not because Oxford, Misissippi is a
place you can't get kids. Kids have been going there
for years, in decades. They win, they don't way as
much as LSU. That's the reason why Glenn's going there.
Ten fourteen Matt Thomas Show with Ross Here in Salt
Lake City, this is Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 8 (11:47):
Ninety continue to osteal confidence in all our guys I
believe in each and every one of our players.
Speaker 6 (11:54):
I believe, well, no matter what the situation.
Speaker 8 (11:56):
Is like, we're gonna put them in the telespots because
I know they can make the plays. I trust their
the training that they put in, the work that they
put in behind the scenes.
Speaker 6 (12:05):
I know what they're capable of, and so I love these.
Speaker 8 (12:08):
Guys, trust what they're doing, and I'm proud to be
their coach.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
No question that Demiko is the player's coach and he's
around him. That was a big win yesterday. It wasn't
the prettiest thing. There were things that were you were
shaking your head about. But there, Rossie, they're they're not
all gonna be the prettiest things out there. For sixty minutes, I've.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
Thought it got the you know, wasn't there this talented, handsome, wonderful,
extremely smart radio host who called it upset for the
Texas Longhorns and the Houston Texans.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
Uh what station did you work for?
Speaker 3 (12:44):
I believe it's Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
I don't know. I thought Matt Jackson loved this.
Speaker 4 (12:50):
I mean to call it upset for both of them. Man,
that's a great call. Where that guy is he deserves
some kudos.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
I just look at the vacation schedule. It will be around.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
You know what he's earned that time off.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
Can you take you something?
Speaker 3 (13:05):
Drop all this knowledge on everybody.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
Can I go Aaron Andrews on you for a minute?
He said, this is this is awful. So the NBA
really screwed the Rockets, Uh with not we didn't advance
to the NBA Cup Round, which what happened, Well, we
lost to uh who we lose to that Denver? That
was what that was? What Noo, it'd be Golden State.
(13:28):
So that was good. So we're playing you know, the
NBA then assigned you two more games. Mm hmm.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
Within the group.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
No, no, no, it can be anybody, anybody.
Speaker 4 (13:41):
Somebody who didn't make it. I thought I was within
the group. No, no, it's just people have teams that
didn't make right.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
We are playing one side team outside the group, Los
Angeles in Houston. We're only going to l A once
a year, so that would have been the logical Clippers Clippers. Okay,
then we're going to Denver to play them in Denver
for the third time. So here's the bit. Now, only
(14:07):
did you and I look the Clippers sucks, So that's
not bad, but Denver's not fun to play. I'm gonna
be They got one of the fifteen greatest players maybe
ever just playing in the NBA to play.
Speaker 4 (14:15):
She's climbing that list. Honestly, we got to start having
these discussions. He is insane.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
Maybe after the Super Bowl, Yeah, that's fine. But so
the schedule comes out. We have to play Denver on
a Monday. This is in a week from today, No,
not a week from today, two weeks from today, uh huh.
Then we play at New Orleans on Thursday. So the
question was do you come home for literally thirty hours,
(14:43):
then go on a plane to go to New Orleans
and then after the New Orleans.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
Gemes like a one hour flight, sure, come home after that.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Then we're going back to Denver to play them again.
So I think, and I have not heard definitive ord.
I think we're gonna be on the road the whole time,
which I mean they'll be away from home sixteen days. Hmmm.
And that's my Aeron Andrews moment.
Speaker 4 (15:06):
Serious, Okay, hold on, can we talk about this because
now for those of you who don't know what Matt
and Matt is referencing too. There was its post from
Awful Announcing with quotes from Aeron Andrews talking about if
you want to come through up in this business, you're
gonna have to miss some holidays and so those were
regular in context. She wasn't complaining, she didn't have tears
streaming down her face. She didn't say I wish I'd
(15:27):
never got into this god forsaken business.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
This is the worst job ever.
Speaker 4 (15:31):
She was just speaking the facts, which Matt, You've had
to miss Christmases and Thanksgivings and New Year's. I've had
a miss and Thanksgiving in New Year's right, And it
is a fact of this business. You're gonna make no money,
and you're gonna miss holidays, and you gotta make sacrifices.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
Correct.
Speaker 4 (15:43):
So then everybody took it as this I it's time
for me to take shots at Aaron Andrews and talk about.
Speaker 3 (15:49):
How many sacrifices my.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
Dad delivered milk in the nineteen.
Speaker 4 (15:53):
Sixties during a wizard and he didn't make millions of
dollars on Fox Broadcasting.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
Okay, that doesn't have anything to do with what she said.
Speaker 4 (16:03):
And it's it is this thing that we run with
and we all want to get our feelings hurt and
take shots at Aaron Andrews and act like she's the
She's the devil, right, And all she did was say
you had to make some sacrifices in this business, which
is true.
Speaker 2 (16:18):
Yeah, sacrifices. I wouldn't change it's many.
Speaker 4 (16:22):
Business is absolutely same. Yeah, I'm gonna be working what
you love.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
No job is perfect.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
With all that being said, I hope somebody else is
doing rockets wrap on Christmas Day, but it's probably gonna be.
Speaker 2 (16:37):
I love the little thing at the very end, all right,
So enough about it. Good point being is that it's
just NBA. I love you for so many things, but
you really didn't do us any favors. It was just
it sucks. All right. Let's get to back to the
more important thing, that Houston, texasbubway. If you're out there,
and let's be early on us, we're trying to We've
been doing this for almost a year now, Rossie. We're
still trying to build the ten and twelve crowd. I
(16:58):
don't know where that is, but that's okay. If you're
out there, Hi, Hello, Hello, Hello seven one three, two
one two five seven ninety. If you want to chime
in seven one three two one two five seven nine
zero seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
Your team won a gritty game.
Speaker 4 (17:20):
Yes they did.
Speaker 2 (17:21):
You know what Daniel Jones was, I thought way better
than I thought he was gonna be. I thought basically
he was gonna be up to do the game in
a wheelchair.
Speaker 4 (17:27):
Yeah, a story. They shot him up with the good stuff.
He was moving better than all of my getting me.
Speaker 2 (17:33):
He didn't feel a thing, He didn't even know where
he was for eighty percent of that game. But Jonathan
Taylor was bottled up.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
He just was beautiful.
Speaker 4 (17:42):
Is the number one And I said this last week,
and this is why I picked the Texans. This is
a super Bowl winning defense right now, Like if people
go down, if Will Anderson or Danil Hunter or even
you know, Petrie or Bullock or Singley or whatever, if
they miss a piece, a key piece or two, I
will back off of that. But as prized and healthy,
this is a super Bowl winning winning caliber defense.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
But as you say that, though you hear it, you
have to say, can the defense be so amazing? No, yeah,
that it can overcome. Let's be brutally honest and average.
Speaker 4 (18:16):
It best offense, that's the thing. Can they be right?
As you know, we've invoked the names of the two
thousand Ravens. I don't know the two thousand and two
of the two five Bears.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
Okay, put away. How many Super Bowls have there been?
Fifty something? No, I'm in that many? Has there sixty?
Speaker 6 (18:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (18:34):
Okay, I think so in the sixty years of the
Super Bowl? There are what three that have this game
changing defense for the ages and fifty seven the usually
a pretty deep sense.
Speaker 4 (18:46):
I would put the fifteen Broncos in that category when
when Peyton Manning's arm wasn't even working and they still
won the Super Bowl?
Speaker 2 (18:53):
How about the Buccaneers with Brad Johnson.
Speaker 4 (18:55):
Brad Johnson Buccaneers are on that list. The Giants when
they won with Jeff H. Stetler was all defense at
that point. Okay, but it's a short list.
Speaker 2 (19:04):
Yeah, it's a short list. So all I'm saying is
that can you be one? Can you be the sixth
Super Bowl champion team out of sixty that have had
amazing defenses? In mid offenses?
Speaker 4 (19:15):
Well, they already have a better offense than like the
trendilferd but their defense isn't as good. So yeah, it's
a matter of finding the medium. Can the offense be
good enough right now? I mean two weeks ago, we
would be talking about the AFC favorites and we would
be naming the Bills and the Colts and the Texans
just beat them both in a row, and you got
you got a little You're a question of.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
You, Matthew. I told you popped into my head when
Steven A.
Speaker 4 (19:39):
Smith was talking about AFC champions I was like, it
popped into my head too.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
It is possible.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
I would say that you've lost.
Speaker 4 (19:46):
Say, I'm just saying it's possible. I'm not saying their favorites.
I'm not saying they're gonna win at all. I'm saying
it's possible.
Speaker 2 (19:54):
All right, Well, I'm gonna give you some more reasons
why it's possible, and I'm gonna look at the AFC ladder.
We'll tech me about that in a moment ten twenty
nine of The Matt Thomas Show with Ross. I'm here
in Salt Lake City. We would love to hear from
you if you are out there, would like to visit
with us. We don't do monologue ready, we'd like to
talk to y'all. So if you're around and you have
a heartbeat in your phone works seven one three again,
(20:16):
I guess the main thing would be if you're out
there seven one three two one two five seven ninety
seven one three two one two five seven ninety with
Ali Ross, I'm going to perhaps share your optimism over
can a superior defensive team make it a late super
(20:39):
run towards the playoffs. But again, the number one thing
is they got to get in. Here's the thing. I
look at the conference standings Denver ten and two. Did
you see Denver had to win on a two point
failed conversion to beat the Commanders last night?
Speaker 4 (20:54):
It went to overtime, And honestly, I was tired from
my weekend in Austin and I went to bed.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
I got you. Yeah, I mean Denver's does it. I
mean they've they've won what eight nine consecutive games. I
mean credit that goes where credit is. But people in
Denver are like, man, this is amazing. And meanwhile Wee
and Houston are like, yeah, your bo nick sucks. Meanwhile
people in Denver like, well, C J. Stroud and the
offense sucks. So I think every city right now has
(21:19):
their hesitation. Okay, there ain't nobody beating their chest right now.
New England ten and two they play tonight. They've won
nine consecutive games, Drake may is having an MVP type season.
They're to me, the most well rounded offense and defense
in the NFL. But it's also going to be their
first four right in the playoffs with this, with this leadership.
So is you there?
Speaker 4 (21:39):
Yeah, Rabel's been to an AFC championship game, right, yes
he has, but this is a new team with it
or whatever.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
So but again it's not they're like, been there, done that. Jacksonville.
How in the hell of the eight and four? I
don't know, because they suck. I'm sorry they do. But again,
you are what your record is. They've won three straight.
Baltimore looked. I mean, how do you let Cincinnati and
now Grant. I know that Joe Burrow played his first game,
(22:07):
but Lamar Jackson, I know. I'm talking to the vice
president of the Lamar Jackson Fan Club. He was terrible, rossill.
He he was terrible.
Speaker 4 (22:14):
He's not There was some videos some people were showing
of him moving around like he's had a hamstring injury,
a knee injury and an ankle injury. He's not moving
well at all.
Speaker 3 (22:24):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (22:24):
It's affecting his touch in his throats by the way.
Speaker 4 (22:26):
Yeah, I can't tell you what percent he is out there,
but it ain't close to one hundred. He's trying to
play through some stuff. And if yet, if he doesn't
round it a shape, they've got no shot.
Speaker 2 (22:37):
Chargers won yesterday. Herbert broke his up, his non throwing hand.
That'll be fun for the next month or so. He's
gonna play though, apparently through it. Yeah, the Colts are
showing some signs of regression, for sure. They're no longer
even the top team in the AFC South. And Buffalo
has no offensive lineman apparently healthy, but they got a
(22:58):
couple to go in there. They were down at the
half to Pittsburgh before they woke up and played. And
then you've got Houston at the eighth spot. They're the
first team on the outside looking in. I think Pittsburgh
is under free fall. Aaron Rodgers and his wide receivers
are grumpy towards each other. And then you got Jonathan's
Kansas City Chiefs at six and six. Mine.
Speaker 3 (23:21):
You're not gonna claim you're six and six. I'm just
saying he had them losen to the Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (23:28):
He did, he did, So tell me the most dominant Okay,
So if I was to literally ask you, and I'll
I'll give you my answer. First, the two most well
rounded teams in the NFL, in the AFC side of things,
I would say, are the New England Patriots and when
they want to the LA Chargers. How can you go
(23:52):
to bat for a Charger team that's typically one and
done in the playoffs, just like the Texas the mind
of the Texans of the West coast.
Speaker 4 (23:56):
Frankly, yeah, it feels like the Patriots are their favorites.
I would have said Colts a couple of weeks ago.
I mean, I guess you just got to give to
the The Broncos won nine in a row. I mean, they
don't look like world beaters, but nine in a row
and the NFL is nine in a row.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
And again, playing January games in Denver will not be
fun for anybody.
Speaker 4 (24:15):
And they have, by the way, that Broncos have have
an incredible defense. But when when they came to Houston,
you weren't sitting there saying, wow, this team is like
AFC favorites. I think if CJ. Stroud finishes that game
they did, the Texans win.
Speaker 2 (24:27):
But you know, we never know that's correct. Yeah, So
I'm just saying, if you want to be optimistic, you're
allowed to do it. It's it's okay. Even though if the
playoffs were to begin today, the Texans would be on
the outside looking in.
Speaker 4 (24:41):
I'm optimistic because I just saw this defense close out
on the road against the Colts in a week before
that they closed out.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
May MAKEE.
Speaker 3 (24:47):
Josh Allen look like a rookie Josh Allen.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
Yeah, all right, we got some people that want to
say hi to us, and we really appreciate that. Seven
one three, two one two five SEVENAI. We'll start with
Oscar and the Matt Thomas show at Ross Oscar. Thank
you holding in. Good morning, Good morning.
Speaker 9 (25:04):
So I want to ask, like, what do y'all think
about the hell Mary at the end of the half.
But I could have gone with Kayimi, but but I
didn't like Demiko's is another answer either, but it is
what it is.
Speaker 4 (25:19):
Yeah, I thought that they should have kicked the field
goal as well. I didn't know did they say how
much that would have been? Like a sixty four yard
or something.
Speaker 2 (25:25):
Let four yards? What they would Okay, it was a
sixty one.
Speaker 4 (25:29):
I think you're you're right man, I think sixty one
is his career long. I don't understand why they didn't
kick that either. I mean, were they too worried that
he was going to get blocked and taken for a
touchdown the other way? What did Demiko Ryan say about that?
Speaker 2 (25:43):
Demiko's like, you know what Tomiko said? Do you know
what he said? We get the ball open up the
third quarter? We're fine?
Speaker 4 (25:49):
What does that even mean?
Speaker 2 (25:50):
He's you know what he's he's just an super conservative
game caller. And there's no evidence otherwise.
Speaker 3 (25:57):
There's very Okay, I wouldn't say no risk, there's very risk.
Speaker 2 (26:01):
Kick the ball.
Speaker 3 (26:03):
It's the end of the half.
Speaker 4 (26:04):
Three more points is three more point doors too, and doors.
This is one of the real This is something that
does scare me come playoff time. When you know it's
week thirteen or whatever against the Colts, it's fine, but
in the playoffs and everything is on the line and
you're having these procedural penalties and you're fumbling timeouts and
(26:26):
you're not kicking when you should, and you're not you're
not going for it when you should. Those little things matter,
and that's where I am worried about Demico Ryans as
a head coach within the thin margins that exists in
the NFL week to week and then especially in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
Look, we know the book on Demico Ryans terrific motivator,
a fantastic assessment of defensive talent. Guys buy in. He
is a below average in game coach. Not horrible, yes,
but certainly not even average. He's just not it. Worries
doesn't use a challenge flag. Well, no, again, I don't
(27:08):
even know if Nick Cayley was. I feel pretty confident
tell you Nick Cayley was not a Demico Ryan's higher
So I'm not going to put that on him. Although
you know, if you're part of his staff, you are that. Yeah,
I mean you go with him.
Speaker 3 (27:19):
But on the staff, it is what it is.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
It is what it is. So I mean, maybe Ross
we are just because we have the microscope on a
particular coach that maybe every NFL city that does a
radio show says, our guy just doesn't do something very well.
I mean for years, and I know Andy Reid's gotten better,
but there are the times in Kansas City for Andy Reid.
Oh my god, what is he doing with the timeouts?
(27:41):
How's he handled the two minute drill? Now that gets
covered up when you win Super Bowl? So that's you know,
and you've got Pat Mahomes yeah.
Speaker 4 (27:49):
Man, yeah, and it was bad clock management before that.
No kidding on kick by the way.
Speaker 2 (27:53):
Yeah, I don't know. We're finding ourselves in both college
your professional football. We just don't trust the men that
have the headsets on. It's like they need an You
need like a human being, not a headset. A guy
next to you that's literally got a play card and says, Okay,
(28:13):
here's what the time is left. Here's the timeout literally
like a like a live metrics person right next to you.
That's what you have to do. Because it feels like,
week after week after week we are questioning what Demiko
is doing in a particular situation. Now again the end
result is wins, so he can tell you to shut
your by mess up, But you're right, ross, what's it
(28:34):
gonna be happening in a close, tight playoff game when
you don't want to leave points on a board at halftime,
when you're sitting there playing X y Z team in
January down a field goal.
Speaker 4 (28:43):
Yes, I mean I understand his unquestioned belief in the defense,
and we're gonna get it done.
Speaker 3 (28:49):
That's good.
Speaker 4 (28:50):
You want to be confident in your defense. But it's
it's a little bit to a fault. I would say, yeah, I.
Speaker 2 (28:59):
Don't he I mean, you can't be great in everything.
Speaker 4 (29:04):
True.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
If you were, you'd be doing attend to two night.
Speaker 3 (29:08):
Not every coach checks every ball a box. If you do.
If you do, you're you're Andy Reider.
Speaker 4 (29:14):
Bill Belichick are one of the literally five greatest coaches
of all time, correct.
Speaker 2 (29:20):
Because they're gonna take something. Demiko Ryans I think is
a really good human being. Vince Lombarney is widely considered
one of the best coaches in the history of the
of the football. He's probably was find an a hole,
been a horrible human was he was? He a scumbag?
I didn't come across as overly pleasant.
Speaker 3 (29:36):
Like kicking old ladies in the shen and stuff.
Speaker 2 (29:38):
I'll tell you what, who probably checked all the boxes
more than anybody else. And this is a little old school.
Maybe Bill Lost checked all the boxes. One of the
greatest masterminds of offensive coaching in the history of football
and probably and came across a pretty decent dude.
Speaker 3 (29:51):
Uh, Dick for Mills seemed like a nice guy.
Speaker 4 (29:53):
Yeah, but yeah, and he didn't. He's not one of
the all time greats. Bill Parcells a whole, Bill Belichick
a hole, Lane Kiffin a hole, which we gotta get
to that. By the way, why are we acting like
Lane Kiffin is like the toast of college football? What
does he if If if mister Chris going it comes
(30:14):
on here and says sarcas.
Speaker 2 (30:15):
Oh my god, I'm serious, if he.
Speaker 4 (30:17):
Says sark hasn't won anything, reach, what is Lane Kiffin?
Speaker 2 (30:20):
One preach? He hated Lane Kiffin forty five days ago.
Now I think he walks on water back on the
phones Tony and Yankees. Keith will get to you next
ten forty three Sports Talk seven ninety, we're going to
hear from Dimiko. He speaks to the media ross a
number of boot looking questions that CG will get in
(30:44):
between eleven fifteen and eleven thirty. Let's put the number
two and a half. I'm gonna take the over, okay,
So we need to write them down. So as you listen,
we gonna write down the boot linking question. Okay, that's
(31:06):
anything that would be a way to just say hey,
I love you long time.
Speaker 4 (31:11):
Mm hmm, Like how was the turkey after the games?
Stupid stuff? I just set up for vanilla stuff.
Speaker 2 (31:19):
Yeah, what what do you want to say to the
fans who you went on the road and that kind
of crap like that. So I got got, I got
the over two and a half of the boot licking questions.
Let's go to the phones and talk to the nice
people of Houston, Texas. Tony with us on seven Aunty.
Speaker 10 (31:34):
Hello Tony, good morning guys.
Speaker 11 (31:36):
Hey, So initially I was just going to talk about
the an mut game, but I want to throw my
quick two cents about the Texans. You know, it's funny,
but he's talking about you were talking about Demiko there,
and they've obviously done a good job the past couple
of weeks with going against the Bills and UH and
the Colts. But the huge gauge will definitely be this
is a Sunday against Andy Reid and Patrick Maholmes in
(31:59):
Kansas City. That's that that then we'll see how they
handle themselves, So that'll be a huge gauge for them.
But what I wanted to talk about. Was this A
and M UT game that just went through. I am
an aggie va my daughter obviously, my kid went there
and I've been a fan since. And uh, I know
it's always UT wants to be at A and M
and it wants to beat UT. But the A and
(32:19):
M fans, even though they lost and UT played probably
the best of the end game of the season they
had this year.
Speaker 7 (32:25):
This year against A and M.
Speaker 11 (32:27):
But A and M needs to sit back and realize
that they have three weeks to get healthy, three weeks
to prepare for the playoffs, and three weeks to refocus
and realize, you know, maybe they weren't all that and
they need to get their poop together. So anyway, it's
just the A and M fans don't don't don't, don't
fall to the wayside, knowing that even though you lost UT,
(32:48):
you got the playoffs coming up and you're gonna be
healthy and see what happens from there. But anyway, UT
played a hell of a game, So all I got.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
They did, thank you for the phone call, Tony. Yeah,
and look, I'm I'm with you, Tony. I'm I'm an
aggie through my son. So Texas played better. I don't
even know ross if the game is on a neutral site,
it would it would have been any different. I thought
just Texas had a much better game plan. I thought
some of the play calls late in the game. Marcel
Reid was out of sorts and look arch I mean,
(33:19):
passing wise, far from spectacular, but he can run. And
speaking of the running game, where was that Texas running
game been all season long?
Speaker 5 (33:25):
H yeah?
Speaker 4 (33:26):
When Travian Wisner has gotten a lot better. The offensive
line has gotten a lot better as the season has
gone gone along. Wisner is he his patience and vision
has improved greatly as the season has gone along to
where I felt like he was just I will say,
just a guy to the level of where Texas is
(33:46):
and where you would like him to be. Where they
have they have NFL guys, you know Jon Robinson and
Roshan Johnson and other guys who were in the NFL.
Like Trey Wisner, I never felt was up to that level.
But he's gotten a lot better. The offensive line has
got a lot more cohesive, and that was the big
key to me, was how was the running game going
to go? Because the Longhorns in there, they struggled against
(34:10):
a running quarterback and run game against Arkansas. The same
thing happened in that Florida game with with Lagway and
the Florida running game, and I was worried about that
with Marcel Reid in his capability running and the and M.
Speaker 3 (34:21):
Rushing game which had been very good.
Speaker 4 (34:23):
So it's the key to me of why the Texas
won was they were able to run and for the
for the most part, they were able to bottle up
the run of the Aggies.
Speaker 2 (34:34):
I have not done a deep study on if you
put Texas in who gets kicked out? Do you know
they answer that question?
Speaker 4 (34:41):
It's basically six teams vying for two spots. It's Texas Vandy.
Notre Dame is in that mix. I'm trying. I'd have
to go pull it up, but I don't think Texas
gets in. They didn't get any of the help that
they needed. They needed to owe you to lose to LSU.
They needed some other they they need maybe Bama to
(35:02):
lose to Auburn, But now Bama's in the in the
SEC championship game and they could get a third loss
if they lose to Georgia.
Speaker 2 (35:10):
Correct.
Speaker 4 (35:11):
So, and by the way, Bama's losses are to oe
you who Texas beat and Florida State who Florida beat?
Speaker 3 (35:17):
Like, why is Bama?
Speaker 4 (35:19):
Why is And I'm not gonna say that Texas deserves
to be in and all this stuff, But the counter
argument that Texas if they were ten and two, they
would be in. I mean, I think I'd buy into that,
but don't also don't lose to Florida.
Speaker 2 (35:30):
I understand that, I think to me, And again, I
don't mean to overly simplify this.
Speaker 4 (35:34):
Oh By in the mix. I'm trying to pull this up. Sorry,
go aheadh b Why he's not getting in?
Speaker 2 (35:37):
Come on? I mean, I look, I like the Big twelve,
but it's not gonna happen unless. Now, if BYU beats
Tech in the Big twelve championship game, that's going to
really muddy things up. That's going to really kick out
on a large for sure. Look, thirty five to ten
was not good to Georgia, but look, there have been
a lot of really good football teams that have gone
to Athens and lost by four touchdowns. I mean, that's
(35:58):
not a three plus touchdowns. The number one thing if
I'm in the committee room and the door is shut.
I can't let a team in the playoffs that has
multiple losses that one I missed to Florida who won
three games, right, and but I mean that, that to
me is the fat of complaint.
Speaker 3 (36:13):
I get it.
Speaker 4 (36:14):
And then then the counter argument, of course is they
have three three there are only ten two and yeah, yeah,
it beat three of them. It's crazy. So yeah, I
understand it's not gonna be. They didn't get the help
that they needed. H There are many Longhorned fans who
were like, this is the.
Speaker 2 (36:29):
Worst thing of her blah blah blah blah blah. It's not.
Speaker 4 (36:31):
And you know, I'm on a group text with me
and a couple other people, were all, we all root
for the Longhorns, and we all agree. We all agree
because I want I want some people to know that
there are rational Longhorn fans out there, that we are
we are all on the same page. It would have
been nice if they would are able to get get
some help and get in. But they this is not
some tragedy of Texas. Doesn't make it. This is not
(36:54):
some grand slight. Don't lose to Florida, and oh, by
the way, don't lose to if Texas says, we'd big boys,
we're tier, we're on a top tier college football. Then
go and beat Ohio State on the road, Go and
beat Georgia on the road, or don't lose to Florida.
I mean, very simple. Win any one of those three games,
and it's no question.
Speaker 2 (37:13):
Yeah, because George's human this year, by way, I know,
I don't want to slight Florida. They got their fourth win,
they beat Florida State up the week.
Speaker 4 (37:18):
Yeah, and they've had a very difficult sec. I've been
seeing all these things. You know, it's a lot of
longhorn stuff. Of course on my for you, it's like
when you break down, when you break down Florida's schedule,
look at they look at how difficult this was.
Speaker 3 (37:30):
Like, all right, relax, go win the game.
Speaker 2 (37:32):
Can I just give you some friendly advice, Yes, don't
play Ohio State week one. I mean, I'm serious. We
all tease about the Sam Houston utap run ad one more.
I wouldn't know. I know what you want to do.
Speaker 3 (37:46):
I don't care play the big games. Play the big games.
Speaker 2 (37:48):
I love it. I know Ohio State's coming, but.
Speaker 4 (37:51):
They shouldn't have done it the way that they did
this year. This year it was week one. Next year
it's a Texas State, you know, interrastate rivalry, Matt big
rivalry with Texas State week one, and then it's Ohio State.
Speaker 3 (38:00):
Like, get a tune up.
Speaker 4 (38:02):
Please, don't don't just go on the road to Ohio State.
Speaker 2 (38:07):
Set yourself up. All right, let's go before we get
to the top of the hour, let's talk to Jared
on seven Honey, Jared, good morning, Hey.
Speaker 5 (38:15):
Good morning guys.
Speaker 12 (38:15):
Yeah, I'm a fan of Texas Tech. So I got
to watch a really good defense on Saturday, and then
I got to watch my Texans, who haven't also a
terrific defense on Sunday. So I'm curious what you guys
think which of those two teams has the best chance
of making a championship. Tech in football or the Texans
(38:36):
for the Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (38:40):
Well that's a weird A or B. Thank you Jared
for the phone call.
Speaker 3 (38:48):
I would say probably, odds wise, it's Tech.
Speaker 2 (38:51):
I oh man, I don't think either want of them.
Scratched twenty five. It's actually i'd lean towards the Texans
because again we just described a few minutes ago. How
I mean, Oh, I don't think I don't think anybody's.
I mean, you could go to play Ohio State, but
I don't think anybody wud beat in Ohio State. I'm
(39:14):
not sold in Alabama. I'm not sold on Ole Miss.
I'm not sold on Tech. I mean, I'm I'm crediting
how good they are, but I'm saying that I think
one is significantly better than everybody else. Or I can't
say that in the AMC. So I would say by
just that analogy, I would go with the Texans have
a better chance of going to the playing for a
championship than Texas Tech does.
Speaker 4 (39:35):
Texans are twenty five to one to win the Super Bowl.
Tech is eleven to one to win it all. Just
fin Vegas, let mean everything.
Speaker 2 (39:44):
I don't know who's the second favorite behind Ohio State.
Speaker 4 (39:48):
Oh how about you guess It surprised me a little bit.
I'll give you a hint. That's a hint because I
would have guessed Georgia, and that is incorrect.
Speaker 2 (40:02):
Who oh man, Indiana.
Speaker 4 (40:04):
It's Indiana.
Speaker 3 (40:05):
That's okay, Yeah, interesting, right?
Speaker 2 (40:11):
Yeah, I see, I think the drop I think the
drop off from one down the two is pretty drop.
I mean, I look, I respect the hell in Indiana,
but that Big Big ten schedule is far from I mean,
I think we're gonna see let me tell you, let
me see what Indiana can do in this Big ten championship,
and then maybe I can readdress this in a week
from now. But I think Ohio State rolls here, everybody,
I just do all right? We got the Dimiico Ryan's
(40:31):
press conference in fifteen minutes. If you'd like to join
the conversation before then, we'd love to have this good
talking to y'all. We'll talk to Yankees Keith about the
Texans Is he now texans Kee? I always forget about
what what surname he goes by these days. He was
sexn Keith.
Speaker 3 (40:44):
But he's off the bandwagon.
Speaker 2 (40:45):
We need him back you were. Are you ready to
walk him in back with open arms? Yes? All right?
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety. I
know you want to welcome some open arms with the
folks at Centergetics.
Speaker 1 (40:58):
Is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 2 (41:07):
Let me No. Three Sports Talks seven ninety coming up
about twelve minutes from now. We're gonna hear from Debaco Ryan.
So let's be a little bit of a shorter segment
than normal, real quick want to welcome all of you
into the second hour of the program if you'd like
to be a part of the show. Seven to one
three two one two five seven ninety seven one three
two one two five seven ninety I'm here in Salt
Lake City where the Rockets are gonna try to finish
off a two game sweep of the Utah Jazz Steven Adams.
(41:30):
Did you see the play last night? The block on
one end and the thrown on the other? Sports Harv, Yes,
I did. I was driving back from Austin. I caught
well most of the second half. I don't think I
listened to the end of the fourth quarter. No disrespect
to you, Matthew none. No, you're probably disrespecting. Uh. JD.
Davis and Jeff Green and Jayshawn.
Speaker 4 (41:48):
Day Well, actually, the second I heard the name j D.
It is when I turned the broadcast off.
Speaker 2 (41:54):
That's rude, nice kid Day dude.
Speaker 4 (41:57):
I stayed through Jayshawn Taate and the others, But once
I heard JD. Davison, man, that's what I was like
to tell him.
Speaker 2 (42:05):
You said that it's.
Speaker 4 (42:06):
Time to tap out the human victory cigar came in.
I was like, this bad boy's over really quick.
Speaker 13 (42:12):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (42:13):
Keante George is a kid out of Baylor. For those
of you are college and basketball fans and its then
it has a nice little career set up here in Utah.
He had one of the first games I have ever seen.
Now he was sick apparently, is what I was told
right after the game, and he had been probable throughout
the course of the game, but apparently he played through sickness.
Can I give you his box score from last night
(42:33):
and we'll get back to the football. Oh yeah, I
just pulled it up, go ahead, nineteen minutes and eight seconds. Okay.
He went oh for six from the floor, oh for
one from three. He had one rebound to assist, Yeah good,
(42:54):
one foul Okay, eight turnovers. Whoa. He was a minus
twenty seven. Now that's again for those who don't know
what a plus minus is, and it's a very small,
very minor statu's when huh, if you score on the floor,
your team scores, you get a plus the points. If
you give up the points in your floor, it's a minus.
(43:15):
So he was a minus twenty seven.
Speaker 3 (43:17):
For context, Reed Shepherd was a plus thirty three.
Speaker 2 (43:21):
He wasn't the only one. Jabari Smith was a plus
thirty three. Kevin Durant was a plus twenty eight, Steven
Adams a plus twenty four. Steven Adams went nine for
ten from the free throw line. He had a double
double of thirteen points and twelve rebounds, and he had
two field goals to get the double double beast and
(43:42):
that again we played the highlight last that we'll do
it again in the new hour. But the block, the
comeback and the get the hell out of my way
slammed dunk. I mean there were children in the stands
crying ross, yeah, who is that New Zealander hurting our
favorite little Jazzy's.
Speaker 3 (43:57):
They thought the rapture was coming.
Speaker 2 (44:00):
Lord. They were going down in their wine. Well, I
would say wine cellars, they're cold or food storage place.
I don't see wine celters in Utah or where they
store food in case the angel Moroni comes. Yeah, I
was seeing that on the drive from Austin and all
the small towns, a lot of bomb shelters being sold
out there. You ever had freeze dried food, by the way,
you had it?
Speaker 3 (44:19):
Absolutely? I take it camping. It's good. I had, uh, yeah,
I do what.
Speaker 2 (44:24):
Is it called?
Speaker 4 (44:25):
I can mountain meals or something like that. The beef
Stroganoff delicious.
Speaker 2 (44:30):
I did commercials for them when I lived here in
Salt Lake City.
Speaker 4 (44:34):
Yeah, you could get what you can get like pad
tie and what like.
Speaker 2 (44:40):
It used to be just beef stew and but now
you can get chili pad tie. The tried and true
is the our castrole s type things. But essentially you
just pour, you put hot water on these freeze dried
things and they just naturally cook, which sounds a little odd,
but I mean I wouldn't go out and say I
wouldn't open a restaurant like Matt and Ross's Freeze Dride Cafe.
(45:02):
I wouldn't do that.
Speaker 4 (45:03):
No, it's not no. But when you're in the woods
and you can make it with just boiling water, it's great. Yeah,
great's a relative term. No, it's great for the camping
man back in the day. You know they're like scrounding
or eating pine cones and stuff. Man, you can get
some beef stroganof. It's out of the middle of nowhere. It's great.
Some poison ivy bar, yeah exactly, I'll freeze drive. Yeah,
(45:23):
you want beef Lasagno, you want tree bark, Matt Pine straw.
Speaker 2 (45:29):
All right, so uh yeah, So congratulations to Cante George
having one of the worst box scords I've ever seen
a human being having an NBA game. Watch them go
for like thirty five tonight.
Speaker 4 (45:39):
Yeah, you can get some biscuits and gravy or you
know all your favorites, mac and cheese.
Speaker 2 (45:43):
By the way, I saw your biscuits and gravy tweet. Yes,
And and then my favorite thing about your tweet was
everyone's asking where'd you get that from? And yeah, put
it actually in the tweet.
Speaker 4 (45:52):
I put it into See now, you're making me mad.
Speaker 2 (45:56):
I know.
Speaker 4 (45:56):
I tried it for twenty twenty five. Can we just
can't read it. It's not like I wrote three paragraphs.
Speaker 2 (46:03):
It's not a thousand word spaces.
Speaker 4 (46:06):
It's literally return ten words in the tweet and we
can only read up the four of them. World's going
to hell, Matt, oh God, world is going to hell,
and it's only getting worse.
Speaker 2 (46:20):
No, it's not. Oh no, we're just having a good time.
Yankees Keith on seven ninety y K. What do you
got today?
Speaker 14 (46:29):
Good morning?
Speaker 2 (46:30):
How y'all doing good?
Speaker 3 (46:31):
Doing great?
Speaker 15 (46:33):
Okay, I got some opinions, but I don't you know,
you don't necessarily have to agree with them. I'm thinking
there's going to be four, maybe five teams that finished
at ten and seven, including at Texas. I think that
in the North, I think the Ravens will win with
a nine and eighth record. I also think that the
Rockets will win at least sixty games when they get
(46:56):
Phinny Smith back and Tarry that there's a lot of
teams in the NBA. There's no way that we shouldn't
win at least sixty games. And then yesterday's game. I
watched yesterday's name and I can tell you that Demiko
Rans is coaching scared. He's scared of his own He's
scared of his own offense. They had like almost two
minutes left, two timeouts, and they didn't try to do nothing.
(47:20):
And uh and if you get kick a sixty one
yard field goal, you can shore kick a sixty four
yard field goal. He didn't even try it. He's coaching scary,
scared of his own offense. He's coaching his defense, and
he really is scared of his own offense. That's my opinion.
Speaker 3 (47:38):
I think it's the opposite.
Speaker 4 (47:39):
I think he wants to win with defense because he's
a defensive minded coach and they have a great defense.
Speaker 2 (47:43):
I don't think he's coaching scared Keith, you know what
it is. That's just who he is. I don't think
that's that's how he was built.
Speaker 4 (47:49):
That's defensive coaches one oh one. They want to run
the ball and play with defense. It just is what
it is. I wish it were different, but it's just his.
It's coaching defense. It's coaching the NFL hit defensive coaching
one on one.
Speaker 14 (48:05):
I don't think there's too many coaches in the NFL
with what they think is a good quarterback, have the
ball with almost two minute lap and two timehouts and
don't even try nothing. Who does that.
Speaker 2 (48:19):
Defensive minding coaches? Yeah, super conservative.
Speaker 4 (48:22):
I mean it would be him and probably I'm trying
to think of others around still to this day. I
mean it's it's kind of very old screws.
Speaker 2 (48:28):
Yeah, years ago you could find it.
Speaker 6 (48:30):
Yeah, I mean.
Speaker 2 (48:34):
Dan Campbell is not. Dan Campbell actually does too much
of it. I think I disagree. Well, I know for
us we enjoy it, but I think he does put
his team behind the eight ball sometimes because of maybe
a lub little over exertion of.
Speaker 4 (48:48):
I think when they get four downs and and it works,
we don't remember. For example, the Bills did it into
two big instances, and Tony Romo and Jim Nantz were
questioning it both times. It was fourth and two, they
got a touchdown, they don't say a word afterwards, And
there was a fourth and one that they got and
Tony Romo's like, I would kick the ball here, and
then they don't say anything afterwards. We forget when they
get when they they're aggressive and they get it, we
(49:10):
don't remember. And then Mike Florio and the boys when
when Dan Campbell misses a couple of them.
Speaker 3 (49:15):
Oh, this is egregious and he's closing his team to win.
Speaker 2 (49:19):
Mute.
Speaker 4 (49:20):
Yeah, I mean I had because he's he's the best
NFL aggregator, and you know, I like to keep on
top of NFL news, so I still follow him. But
when he right, when he injects his personal opinions, it's horrible.
Speaker 2 (49:33):
But just give me the Dimiko. Sorry, you got that right.
Dimiko's up next eleven twelve on Sports Talk seven ninety
and Jonathan will let us know when Dimiko starts to speaking.
We have the overunder on endless stupid questions to two
(49:56):
and a half. So we'll see how that goes seven three?
Do we have the bell? We want to go the
who's gonna time that that you? That's gonna have to you.
It makes that call attention, that's gonna be you because
I haven't pled a put over my computer. Oh yeah,
we can't have that. Yeah, so that's up to you.
Speaker 4 (50:17):
Let me find Let me find this.
Speaker 2 (50:19):
All right, We've got your Instagram or something at sports
MT Would you like to follow my instagram? It is approaching.
Oh there you go. That's jailing Rows. I missed jailing Row.
When did we do that? Was that during Casario press conferences?
When he would give you this relatiously long works out
(50:40):
the How did we start jailing on that?
Speaker 4 (50:42):
No, I want to say it goes back to Bill O'Brien.
Speaker 2 (50:46):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's a Bill. Yeah,
it goes back years.
Speaker 4 (50:49):
We've been doing this show and I the last time yeah.
Speaker 2 (50:52):
I feel like the last time we went to it
was was during a Nick Cassio press It was Jeff Fisher.
Speaker 3 (50:56):
Actually, man, that's it.
Speaker 2 (50:59):
That is o G style. By the way, my Instagram
account is thriving spot to approach. Let me see the
number forty one away from thirty one hundred. Oh man,
you are growing. This is bad.
Speaker 4 (51:13):
I mean, great job, matt It's not bad at all.
Speaker 2 (51:16):
I put videos or photos of me and these sports
venues I'm in. It's all good.
Speaker 4 (51:22):
Yeah. I posted one of me at dk R if
you want to check it out. My briskets review is
dropping tomorrow at sports TRV.
Speaker 2 (51:31):
Was that where'd you eat? Would you eat the brisket?
Speaker 3 (51:33):
Briskets? That's oh okay.
Speaker 4 (51:36):
I thought you were like it was a Texas Monthly
top fifty joint. It's a it's a little trailer in
Austin and I had the It's they call it brisket.
Speaker 3 (51:43):
It's genius.
Speaker 4 (51:44):
I'm actually, you ever come across something so genius you wish.
Speaker 2 (51:46):
You would come up with it.
Speaker 4 (51:47):
It's brisket on a biscuit and they call it briskets.
Speaker 2 (51:50):
This is genius. Yeah. By the way, we use the
things when Dan Matthews uses dated movie lines in the
show are.
Speaker 4 (51:57):
Some movie you've never even seen. It's like quoting hot Rod,
like what ding?
Speaker 2 (52:02):
Yeah? Yeah, he's uh yeah, he love you to pull
a nineteen ninety three movie out of nowhere. Straight to VCR.
That's how those movie references can go. All right, so
what do we do this? Why don't we kill a
couple of minutes? Uh? And we can certainly finish this
up ross explain your your Austin weekend.
Speaker 3 (52:23):
Oh okay, to finish and then.
Speaker 2 (52:24):
Whenever if we didn't interrupted, we'll go back to it once.
So Diamiko starts.
Speaker 4 (52:28):
I mean, it wasn't It was fairly uneventful. We drove
to Austin, checked into the hotel, the.
Speaker 3 (52:34):
Rada Hotel, Hotel Ro Rata Rin. What would you call that?
Speaker 2 (52:38):
It's fine? What was it again?
Speaker 4 (52:42):
Da?
Speaker 2 (52:43):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (52:44):
Look do you know they were still around? Oh yeah,
it's like eighty bucks a night. The nice places are
like four hundred dollars a night. So and that wouldn't happen.
We just needed somewhere to hang our hats. Well, we
just went there to sleep. It was fine, okay. Then
ubered out to the tailgate. We were able to find
everybody put a premium on the tailgates. Normally like fifty
(53:06):
dollar tailgates were seventy five twenty dollars. Tailgates were forty
like it was ridiculous. We were able to find one
for twenty bucks, so hung out there, had some delicious
lemon pepper wings. Then went to the game. It was honestly,
when I was walking around the tailgates, it was like
fifty to fifty aggies longhorns, like I was worried, And
(53:28):
then when we went to the stadium it was more
like seventy thirty. Then the then the game was great.
It started to rain. I went and bought a poncho
because I got worried and I was screaming the whole game.
There were a couple of aggies behind us that were
super nice. I mean everybody that we there were. I
never saw any incidents or anybody getting upset or anything
like that.
Speaker 3 (53:45):
Everybody was cool.
Speaker 4 (53:46):
We were all there was three aggies to my right,
two to above us, and we were all just very
cordial and chill screamed, lost my voice. They won the
d Stadium Inner tainment, by the way, it's very good.
They got like drone shows and fireworks and all that
type of stuff.
Speaker 2 (54:06):
Radio okay got more of it's coming up.
Speaker 6 (54:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (54:12):
During that series, we were driving the ball down felt
really good of how we were driving the ball.
Speaker 6 (54:17):
Honestly, on the first third down, I felt like we
got it.
Speaker 8 (54:19):
I felt we had really good movement and I told
the guys to do it again. Just being aggressive there,
that's my call as the head coach. I'm aggressive. So hey,
it didn't work, That's that happens sometimes, but it's not
gonna stop me from being aggressive even kind of.
Speaker 16 (54:35):
But yeah, what kind of factors into your aggressive is
how much do you kind of mean on like I
guess the Ivan's numbers and things.
Speaker 2 (54:42):
That nation of the seven days.
Speaker 8 (54:43):
Yeah, I mean there's always numbers, analytics, but it's also
a feel when I see our guys move the pile
there on third and one, like they've moved it, I
feel like we could have did it again, and so.
Speaker 6 (54:56):
I don't. I don't. I'm not going back that decision.
Speaker 17 (55:00):
There was there any consideration of challenge that why it
kind of looked like he stoverhead kind of got over
the past line was anything.
Speaker 8 (55:07):
Yeah, I mean yeah, they s u they already confirmed it,
and so it was I couldn't couldn't challenged.
Speaker 4 (55:12):
At that point, she would lead with the uh break player,
do you put like that season ending?
Speaker 2 (55:17):
Or do you with you?
Speaker 8 (55:18):
We Jaylen red, We'll see you know how he continues
to progress, uh with with the arm injury. Don't think
it's season ending. Uh, So we'll see how he progresses.
Speaker 7 (55:28):
Jimmy War do you even know if they deserve any.
Speaker 6 (55:31):
No update on Jimmy Ward.
Speaker 18 (55:33):
I mean, then when you go back and look at
the film from yesterday, h all the different things that
went on, what's the what's your biggest takeaway other than
just you guys finished from yesterday's game.
Speaker 8 (55:44):
Yeah, my biggest takeaway is always I'm excited that we're
got we got to win. But I think the biggest
takeaway for me is we left so much out there, right,
and there's still so many, so many uh things where
we can actually so many things.
Speaker 6 (55:59):
We could do better. And you know, I know it's tough.
Speaker 8 (56:02):
To to say that, but it is some small things,
some things I know we can do better. Things we've worked,
things we can clean up technique wise, uh fundamental wise.
I just feel like we still left a lot of
players out there. And that's my challenge to our guys.
It's always how do you get better? You know, don't
don't just rest on or we want and be happy
with winning. It's all about continue to learn in a
(56:26):
win or a loss. What do you learn from it,
and how you keep pushing the envelope to get even better.
Speaker 19 (56:31):
To me, go on, on one side, you all haven't
always been able to score touchdowns, But on the other side,
you all have moved the ball, kept the ball out
of the other team's hands. Offensively, how do you put
that into perspective with per Does that give you gotimism?
Do you feel like you still need you obviously feel
like you're telling you more, But how do you put
that into perspective offensively?
Speaker 6 (56:50):
I feel like we've moved the ball, you know, really well?
Speaker 8 (56:53):
Uh, and of course we can still get better in
the in the red zone. It's finishing with touchdowns, but
I think we're we're moving it. Well, that's it always
starts there. You know, whatever you want to do offensively,
you got to move the football. Thought we did a
good job on first down, mixing in some of our
play action passes running the ball. Thought it was a
good mix of plays on first down that gave us
(57:14):
the advantage there. We were able to get some explosives
on first down passing the football, and so you know,
you keep pressing forward, you keep trying to get as
many yards as possible, get in the red zone and
then that's where you know, you try to strike and
score score points.
Speaker 16 (57:29):
The coach they sent they say they eleven drop back
from CJ. But you guys, for the majority of the time,
we're able to pick it up. How have you guys
been able to progress so much to this point too,
where like when teams simp listen, let you guys, you
guys able to pick it up consistently.
Speaker 8 (57:46):
Now, that's credit to the coaches, uh, starting with Kaylee
and the offensive staff they do. They've done a really
good job of really emphasizing and walking through the pressure
looks that we'll see.
Speaker 6 (57:58):
And credit to the players they execute the right way.
Speaker 8 (58:00):
I think Woody has stepped up and did a really
nice job, you know, in protection. He's improved of picking
up the blitzes that they were bringing and kind of
got them out of.
Speaker 6 (58:10):
Some of those blitzes and not just picking it up.
Speaker 8 (58:12):
I thought CJ did a great job of answering some
of those blitzes, getting the ball to Nico on one
down the field on a deep incut. So it's it's
collectively coaches, players, everybody working well at it. But it
starts how we practice, how guys are attending to the
details in their meetings and walking through to fix some
of the issues that we had earlier with those blitzsus.
Speaker 2 (58:34):
Had some success with the reverse and also with the
pitch out to the chug.
Speaker 7 (58:39):
Do you feel like with the red zone that you
guys are becoming more creative and finding solutions there?
Speaker 2 (58:44):
And like you obviously earlier.
Speaker 6 (58:46):
In the season and was one it ones, But where you're.
Speaker 8 (58:48):
At now and for us as a coaching staff, we're
willing to do whatever it takes to try to improve.
We won't continue to do the same things. I feel
like they've done a really good job offensively, you know,
adding some non traditional type plays in the red zone
to put us in position to score aggressive early.
Speaker 20 (59:08):
Now you're getting ready to go on to play a
team that has a head coach that you know every
series is fourth downs for him. Do you when when
you're game planning for that, are you going with that
mindset to match it as well?
Speaker 2 (59:20):
Or what do you.
Speaker 17 (59:22):
Go and match it as far as the aggressive is concerned,
as far going forward on fourth down and things like that.
Speaker 8 (59:27):
Really, for me, just looking at it, fourth downs are
we I feel like we have in advanced So I
feel like, we have plays that are good enough to
win on fourth down, So not just going in just
because they're an aggressive team on fourth down. I want
to put the team in the best possible spot. And
going back to our game, I felt like I wanted
to continue to drive down and end up scoring so
(59:49):
we could have a two possession lead there and really
put the game out of reach at that point. Because
our offense did such a great job of driving the
ball down that those positive the plage, but they which
they showed that allowed me to be aggressive because I
felt like we would continue to move the football.
Speaker 21 (01:00:06):
All of the Taylor's rushers were for three yards or less.
H How were you guys able to achieve that as
a defense, And when you're having that success, what kind
of stress did you see that put on the Colts
offensive game point.
Speaker 8 (01:00:18):
Dean, the Taylor did a and he's a tough back.
I thought our guys did a really good job of tackling.
That's what allowed us to really stop the run, not
allowing those guys to get over a hundred yards.
Speaker 6 (01:00:28):
It was how we tackle. Everybody tackled really.
Speaker 8 (01:00:30):
Well, from our safeties, linebackers, uh D Loman and if
one got missed like guys were still there.
Speaker 6 (01:00:37):
We swarmed the football, did a really good job of
tackling you.
Speaker 18 (01:00:40):
Just talk about week twelve, all the things that you
guys have gone through to get to this point, and
every week you your message has been the same. But
how do you get the team and the staffers to
buy into that?
Speaker 2 (01:00:54):
Dean?
Speaker 8 (01:00:55):
Yeah, for me, you know, if your message is changing
every week and you guys may feel like you have
to do something different, I feel like the game football,
you don't have to make something up. You don't have
to do something different. All the work you put in
in training camp, all the rules that you taught, all
those things like, it doesn't change. And so I don't
(01:01:16):
make up things for our guys. I don't make it
bigger than it is. It's continue to control the controllables.
Focus on exactly what we can do to put ourselves
in position to win games. Focus on yourself as an individual,
not staying statusical. How are you really pushing yourself to
get better? How are you studying a little extra, How
are you working a little extra in practice? How are
(01:01:39):
you working a little extra in your recovery process? That's
all that I appreciate. The guys and I'll continue to
prease that because I know that's what truly matters when
the game is on the line.
Speaker 22 (01:01:51):
What was the goal at the end of the first half.
Were y'all trying to get points? Where y'all trying to
kind of balance aggressiveness with maybe not aggressiveness.
Speaker 8 (01:01:59):
Yeah, we're trying to get points there. I mean, we
are trying to get points. We didn't execute how we
wanted to execute at the end of the half.
Speaker 6 (01:02:07):
If we we get the first down, we're we're in
a good spot there.
Speaker 8 (01:02:11):
Want to finish vertical there at the Higgins uh did
a great job of catching the football, but we gotta
finish vertical. Get the first down there, then we're in
position to go in and try to get points.
Speaker 17 (01:02:23):
Defensive line have a lot of players on that what
goes into the rotation as far as you know having
them in and having them out, because I know when
you have players.
Speaker 20 (01:02:33):
Like you know, Danielle and Will, they want to play
the whole game.
Speaker 2 (01:02:37):
But what goes into is there their script or their field.
Speaker 8 (01:02:41):
Coach Rod does a great job with the substitutions. That's
that's up to him with the substitutions and how he's
rolling the guys and we take nine guys to the game.
So the idea behind us we want those guys as
fresh as possible when they're in there. We don't want
our guys having to play, you know, full sixty plays,
want them when they're out there, want them giving everything
they possibly have because we ask a lot of our
(01:03:02):
d line will put a lot on them.
Speaker 6 (01:03:03):
So to do that, you have to be as fresh
as possible.
Speaker 8 (01:03:06):
So coach Rodd has done a really great job of
rotating and mixing those guys in accordingly.
Speaker 22 (01:03:12):
Feels like uh Dalton and Woody have kind of been
battling and what they've been there throughout stayed on the field.
When we talk about toughness, how much did those two
guys kind of create the the toughness that you want
for this team.
Speaker 8 (01:03:26):
Yeah, Well, for me, it's I feel like everybody has
to be tough to play play here. For me, it's
and it's a toughness first off of mental toughness right
to understand your assignments, what you have to do, but
also a physical toughness to.
Speaker 6 (01:03:39):
Push through the the knicks and bumps that you have.
Speaker 8 (01:03:42):
I expect everybody to push through those cause that's what
NFL football is about.
Speaker 19 (01:03:46):
With them, with Jalen's recent injury, and then of course
you've got MJ Jimmy. Do you anticipate having to go
outside to find somebody and how do you handle it
when when you're kind of suffering at that one particular position.
Speaker 6 (01:03:59):
Yeah, we'll find a way. We'll find a way. Not
don't feel like we have to go outside to do that,
but we'll find a way.
Speaker 22 (01:04:07):
Stay go ahead on Sting had that they pass break
up at the end, and now he's allow.
Speaker 2 (01:04:11):
There's three pass or three catchings of it in the
past four games. It's what can you say about the
way that he's playing the game right now?
Speaker 8 (01:04:17):
Kat Stinger has done a great job all year. He's
done a great job of, you know, just handling his business,
doing it the right way, working hard in practice, showing
up in games, and it's his opportunity to make plays.
He finds a way to make those plays.
Speaker 16 (01:04:31):
Oh yeah, I'm talking about aggressive this and going forward
and not going for it.
Speaker 6 (01:04:36):
You know, there was something chatter about when to go
for it and that.
Speaker 16 (01:04:39):
Eagles Bears game kind of wanna get your take on,
like when you go working on two point diversion or whatnot,
cause I think they went a little bit early. What's
not that you're you're philosophy, bo, what's just kind of
your one If you're down hypothetically by ad you score,
not that a. But if you're down to possession fifteen
and you go for it, cause it makes sense to
go for it earlier, or make sense to go for
(01:05:02):
it at the end right to kind of just kind
of know where you're at in that position.
Speaker 2 (01:05:07):
If you're down.
Speaker 16 (01:05:07):
Fifteen score and let's say five minutes with before the
sense to go for it then or wait till the
last time we get the ball back to you know,
try to see if.
Speaker 2 (01:05:16):
These get for it.
Speaker 6 (01:05:17):
And with the two pointed versions.
Speaker 8 (01:05:18):
And I think every every coach there's thirty two head
coaches in the league, and everybody has their philosophy of
how they want to handle it.
Speaker 6 (01:05:26):
That's why they're the head coach.
Speaker 8 (01:05:28):
Everybody else has an opinion about how it should be handled.
Everybody feels like, hey, it's right if it works. If
it doesn't work, then you're an idiot for not doing it.
So it's that's the nature of our job as head coaches.
And I wear that burning and you know, it's okay,
it's all right.
Speaker 6 (01:05:47):
I got your question. Now, I got I got you.
Speaker 2 (01:05:54):
All right, there you go. Did you count the list
looking questions?
Speaker 4 (01:05:58):
I got to I didn't know if you thought the
Woody marks is so tough?
Speaker 3 (01:06:03):
What does that mean for the team?
Speaker 4 (01:06:05):
I don't know if that was kind of it was
a borderline, it was on the edge, and he didn't
answer the question just now. Because there's been a big
debate by breaking out do you go for if you're
down fifteen? Do you go for two first? Or you
to go for two second?
Speaker 2 (01:06:19):
Yeah? I was confused by.
Speaker 4 (01:06:21):
It was poorly worded, so yes, uh. The analytics nerds,
while not nerd the more forward thinking, Oh why do
I phrase this? Yeah? I think you should go for
two first. That way, if you don't get it, then
you're down nine, and you know you can react accordingly.
You can you can manage and massage the clock. Some
(01:06:44):
people say, oh, you don't do it till afterwards, because
you need to if you miss it and you're down nine.
The team needs to believe, have the belief and stuff
like this. It's been a big debate in the NFL
circles over the weekend.
Speaker 2 (01:06:55):
What circles of those, aren't Are you Twitter talking about this?
Speaker 4 (01:07:00):
JJ Watt was talking about it, that all these NFL
writers and reporters are talking about it. Of course Mike
Florio is talking about it.
Speaker 2 (01:07:09):
I don't count him. I would go and we gotta
get to break here. I would go for the two first.
That's because I want to know what's in front of
me exactly. All right, we're gonna finish your A and
M story.
Speaker 4 (01:07:21):
Okay, it's not that it's not that sensational.
Speaker 2 (01:07:23):
Agree, but it's just a wrap it up because it
was a great day for you. Oh it's beautiful. Oh
can I please, can I police take one minute to
explain why A and M Texas is better than Texas Oklahoma?
Can I can I just have one minute and you
can argue with me and disagree and say, Matt, I
don't care what you think.
Speaker 4 (01:07:41):
Look, it's generational to me because aggie'sn't Longhorns are going
at it in like the eighties and early nineties, and
I was an infant. Like for for the majority of
my adult life they din'tven not majority, but for a
huge chuck of my adult life they don't even play.
Speaker 2 (01:07:55):
I know, but let me. But but well, okay, give
me a little space, all.
Speaker 3 (01:08:00):
Right, Aggie, Matt, We'll let you. Let you go ahead,
make your argument.
Speaker 2 (01:08:05):
Eleven thirty five, it's a Matt Thomas Show at Ross.
We've got to tell the truth in less than an
hour the news at noon at twenty five here on seven.
Speaker 4 (01:08:12):
Ninety eleven thirty eight AM here on Sports Talk seven
ninety rosbr YA with you and Matt Thomas and the
Matt Thomas Show with Ross with you until two o clock.
Just brought you the current. It's okay, I forgive you
(01:08:33):
the Demico Ryans press conference. Yeah, I found the It
was Greg Olsen talking about going for it immediately, and
then JJ Watt responded analytically, it is correct. The counterpoint
would be the human element of a team's mindset being
down one scoring set of two. There's an unquantifiable, quantifiable
aspect to the belief and confidence knowing you're down only
(01:08:55):
one score.
Speaker 2 (01:08:57):
Yeap. By the way, did you notice that he called
his play calling aggressive? I guess the hail Mary would
be the aggressive part of that, I guess, And how
he described his last couple of minutes of offense in.
Speaker 4 (01:09:10):
The first aggressive. See this is we're just dealing with somebody.
Speaker 2 (01:09:15):
He was.
Speaker 4 (01:09:16):
It's not going to change. This tiger ain't change in
his stripes. Like it is what it is. He didn't
even answer the question, like he's like, yeah, we wanted
points and you didn't kick the ball. You know what
points if you didn't kick the ball. Yeah, the question
should have been framed, why did you decide not to
kick a field goal?
Speaker 2 (01:09:37):
Yeah, and look, we don't we're not here to do
let's crush medium members because we're not there, so that's
not fair for us to do that. But I mean.
Speaker 3 (01:09:47):
Incorrectly all the time.
Speaker 2 (01:09:49):
Yeah, we do. We do it daily ten to two.
We screw him up. We're guilty, I mean, trust us.
But point being is that I know what the intended
purpose was. Sometimes you you just need to be a
little more direct. But unfortunately, sometimes being direct gets the
rolling of the eyes and scoreliness and I know better
than you are and I'm better than you, So you
(01:10:10):
have to massage it because you want to be respectful
to the position and who's up in.
Speaker 3 (01:10:13):
Front, and you have a relationship to maintain.
Speaker 2 (01:10:16):
Generally, yes, generally, lets unless he's dismissive of you, and
then you need to go right at him. All right,
so real quick, Uh, we had you at the game,
had a good time. Yes, anybody get arrested, anybody young.
I mean I had a lot of Aggie friends that
were at the game, so I knew they were gonna
You know, there.
Speaker 4 (01:10:33):
Was after the game, there was like a there was
a longhorned douche who went up to the well. They
were in coveralls. I mean, these Aggies were asking for
he like put a put his fist up for a
fist pump to the Aggies and then they did it too,
and then he pulled it away at the last second.
I was like, oh, that was a douche. But other
than that, I mean, yeah, I didn't see any contentiousness.
I didn't see any any scuffles or anything like that.
(01:10:55):
Everybody was that was honestly the most people. It wasn't
the loudest environment I'd been in.
Speaker 2 (01:11:00):
I think that.
Speaker 4 (01:11:00):
I think the Bama game in twenty two was louder,
but it was close. And then the but the amount
of people who stayed for the school song Isa Texas.
Like I said, I said this last week, win or lose,
you stayed on the eyes of Texas. That's what you're
supposed to do when you're longhorned, right, And I mean
the stadium was full of people.
Speaker 3 (01:11:17):
It was so awesome, man, and we were all so happy.
Speaker 6 (01:11:19):
It was great.
Speaker 2 (01:11:20):
It was a nice one. Now, where did you tailgate?
Speaker 12 (01:11:23):
Now?
Speaker 2 (01:11:23):
And did you tailgate with a group of people that
you It.
Speaker 4 (01:11:25):
Was not it was people I didn't It was people
I didn't know. They have cash tailgates and we just
found one that was cheap. They have them like a
hundred bucks. Like there was one that was one hundred bucks, Like,
get out of here, dude.
Speaker 2 (01:11:36):
Can you Is it like one of the situations that
if you're paying one hundred bucks and you said, can
I see the menu first?
Speaker 4 (01:11:41):
You can ask them what they have? Yeah, you asked
them what they have, asked them what liquor they have? Yeah,
you talk to them. It's basically like you're you're going
to a restaurant these days. I mean, everybody's got tapped
to pay or zell or whatever and you just write
you can. Some of them are private and some of
them aren't.
Speaker 2 (01:11:56):
So all right, did you park at the stadium or
did you?
Speaker 3 (01:11:58):
And Uber didn't?
Speaker 2 (01:12:00):
And how was that? It was fine?
Speaker 3 (01:12:03):
Parking at the stadium?
Speaker 2 (01:12:04):
Is a mess. It's no, it's a yeah. Every every
stadium is. And tell me a big major college venue
of say, I don't know, sixty thousand or more seats,
that is a complete cf when you try to park.
Speaker 4 (01:12:16):
Yeah, you normally like the the stadium I think is
it on twenty third or something like that. Basically five
six blocks away is where all the tailgating is and
you can park down there for like twenty five bucks
or so.
Speaker 2 (01:12:27):
Thank gotcha. Okay, So let me just say this, and look,
there is a long gap between the series between because
look A and M and Texas. What I do, excuse me,
what I do respect the hell out of Oklahoma Texas.
Is I love state by state battles. Okay, that that
never gets tiresome. Number two, they do it at the
Cotton Bowl where it's literally a fifty to fifty and
(01:12:49):
it's there's no threat of either one of these two
teams saying let's put the game on our home venue.
There's something special about the state fair of Texas and
OU and Texas. Okay, there you can not possibly argue that,
but it feels like to me, and again I've lived
in my I mean, I'm not a longhorn or or
an aggie. But I've lived in Texas for eighty percent
(01:13:11):
of my life, so I have witnessed a lot of
these things on television, and I've been to a couple
of myself over the years. It's it divides families ross it.
It creates uneasiness with your neighbors. It there's more joke telling.
There's more insults about enrollment. There's more insults about you know,
(01:13:35):
the the Texas Bay and their goofy outfits and the
and the.
Speaker 3 (01:13:39):
Core and a fringe is nice. I understand it's hard.
Speaker 2 (01:13:44):
I'm just telling you as someone that doesn't have a
dog in the fight. M no, no, no, no no no.
I mean, hey, am I not bragged about how great
Texas was? I mean, I.
Speaker 4 (01:13:56):
Don't don't make me cut the tape. You literally said
I'm an aggie earlier this show.
Speaker 2 (01:14:00):
Because I paid for.
Speaker 4 (01:14:03):
Don't say I don't have a dog in the fight
when you said I am ann.
Speaker 2 (01:14:05):
But I mean.
Speaker 3 (01:14:07):
You kids say I don't have a dog in the fight.
Speaker 2 (01:14:09):
I'm an aggie big because of my where the money went.
Because they chose me, you know what I mean, the
school chose my son. So it's just to me, I
love family feuds. I love uncomfortableness, and I never feel
when I when I'm sitting around, oh you and Texas fans,
it ever gets nearly as uncomfortable as it does when
(01:14:29):
you're talking about when A and M plays Texas. Okay, well,
just I love civil wars.
Speaker 4 (01:14:33):
Just because the fans fight more doesn't mean it's a
bigger rivalry like it's.
Speaker 2 (01:14:38):
I don't know, I do believe. I think I think
all of it comes into it's a one big formula that.
Speaker 4 (01:14:43):
Says Oklahoma State and Oklahoma fans fight more. But that
doesn't mean that this that that's a bigger rivalry.
Speaker 2 (01:14:51):
I don't Again, I can't speak to that because I'm
not but Bedlam people are wigging out because Bedlam's not
being played anymore.
Speaker 4 (01:14:56):
It's a good rivalry game, don't get me wrong. I mean, yeah,
Texas and to SA and M or rivals. Just to me,
since I've been I mean started on campus and been
around and been a Longhorn fan, it's like, I don't know,
twelve to three or something like that, and then they
didn't play for however many years, ten ten plus years
of that.
Speaker 3 (01:15:17):
So yes, it's a big rivalry.
Speaker 4 (01:15:18):
Yes, it's important, but as I said, if I was
born a little earlier and the game was more back
and forth, or A and M dominated in the early
eighties and it was a bigger deal, then sure, But
of the generation I am, it's not the same. For
I'll give you an example. Texts people are like Texas
in Arkansas. Texas and Arkansas huge rivalry. Okay, yeah, maybe
in nineteen seventy, but I wasn't around then, so I
(01:15:39):
don't feel the big rivalry of Texas and Arkansas, even
though it was a huge rivalry. It's just it can
change depending on the generation or times and the flow
of the back and forth.
Speaker 2 (01:15:51):
I get it. I get it. More on this and
we got to get to Lane Kiffer coming back here.
We've not even really got into that yet. We'll do
that next with the news at noon twelve thirty to
tell the truth. Ross what is today's edition to believe
or not?
Speaker 4 (01:16:02):
At one fifty mm, I don't know. And one more
quick thing. Having been to the OU game, O U
Texas game five times and now I've been to two
A and M games at home at DKR, it's not
even close environment at OU. It is way better. It's
way cooler, it's way more fun. It's it's unique, it's
(01:16:23):
it's special. The games generally year to year are bigger.
Speaker 3 (01:16:28):
It's OU Texas.
Speaker 2 (01:16:28):
Sorry, yeah, well again, I wasn't looking to convince you.
I'm just telling you I love the battles that are
drawn within family members. A.
Speaker 3 (01:16:41):
Yeah, it's more families divided of course.
Speaker 2 (01:16:43):
Yeah. Now granted again in fairness, and I know we're
super late. I've never been to OU Texas. And my
guess is I e we said, at the fifty yard line,
right next to an OU person and right next to
a Texas person, I would probably lean more your direction.
But for me, I just to me. I I love
in fight like I love the egg ball, and I
(01:17:04):
don't have a dog in a five between all Mississippi
State and you do. We'll talk about All miss coming
back eleven forty seven on Sports Talk seven ninety's Matt
and Ross with you here at ten fifty two Mountain Time,
I Love Him fifty two back called I'm here in
Salt Lake City. We had some great interaction from you
folks earlier. If you would like to be a part
of the program, let me give you the phone numbers
(01:17:26):
and really a couple of ways to reach a seven
one three two one two five seven nine zero seven
one three two one two five seven ninety seven one
three two one two five seven ninety If you want
to reach out to us through Twitter and get us
to engage us that way, it's at sports MT and
at sports RV. Ross Lane. Kippin's a great football coach.
I would have said that even a month ago. He wins.
(01:17:49):
Now he's had a lot of turbulent times, you an example,
But I think he's good. I think he's a really
good football coach. Is he the best out there? Is
he the number one free agent? Yeah? But do I
think it's maybe way more options than there would be
great coaches? Whatever? Good football coach took all miss one games.
He's won just about everywhere. Again, early years as a coach,
(01:18:10):
not so much. Later year it's done better. Didn't win
with the Raiders, No, and went to Tennessee in one year,
left which was you know, went to Alabama, resurrected his
career as an offensive coordinator under Nick Saban m M.
But he he was the top of the pie char
a list of people to go after when it came
to free agency. Yes he was Florida was in the
(01:18:31):
mix and all that kind of thing. No question in
my mind is he a bad human being? At its core,
he's just not a good person. But that isn't That's
not a requirement of being a football coach. It's is not.
Speaker 4 (01:18:43):
But isn't that what wore people on Brian Kelly? This
is what this is what's what's kind of funny to me.
This is this major coupe land Lane Kiffin correct and
the top candidate which Brian Kelly was, and concerned about
it being a good person which happened with Brian Kelly.
Speaker 2 (01:19:01):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (01:19:02):
I there's just no guarantee of anything. I could see
this falling flat on everyone's face, especially like.
Speaker 2 (01:19:14):
There's a small part of me that wants it to
because I just think it's just hilarious if this is
this l s U. By the way, by the way,
Gordy owes me an apology, I told you that LSU
had nothing to do but pay the contract out, and
uls you admitted it over the weekend like we got
to pay him out. I mean, Brian Kelly has to
be paid out, and you owe some side a deal,
you pay it and us apology for your h to
(01:19:36):
tell the truth takes.
Speaker 4 (01:19:37):
You said the l s U wasn't landing a power
for coach, and then you said that Kevin was standing
at ole Miss.
Speaker 15 (01:19:44):
No.
Speaker 2 (01:19:44):
I wanted him to stay at ole Miss. Last Monday,
I said, if LSU offers him, he's got to take
the job. Now, I was wrong about the top power
Force election. I will give you that. I was wrong.
Speaker 4 (01:19:55):
Where did h Where did the TWU lane coach go
Florida or Whelorda? Yeah, okay, yeah, I can't keeping thrilled
about that. Tulane's pissed off they keep losing. I mean, look,
we have these girl schools. There's fifteen or twenty of
them that remain relevant year after year. Off the year
that become stopping ground, you know, stepping step, stepping stones,
(01:20:18):
ole Miss Lovefield.
Speaker 2 (01:20:19):
Lovefield would like to be the greatest airport in the world.
Still a place you change pointing to go somewhere else.
Speaker 4 (01:20:22):
You know I've done It's yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:20:26):
It's got good, got a good point being? Is this
good football coach? I think it's a Lozzi human being.
I don't care where he coaches, he said, all Miss,
He's a Lozzy human being. But doesn't matter, Lozzi, human beings.
When you have a portal and you have cash, and
you have.
Speaker 4 (01:20:42):
You know, good staff, you going games, the opportunity to win,
there is much bigger, better, better than.
Speaker 3 (01:20:50):
At ole miss. It just is right, It just is.
Speaker 4 (01:20:53):
I'm sorry that guy who's that podcaster who was all
upset and calling Lane kiff and a hoe.
Speaker 3 (01:20:59):
Can't turn him into a housewife.
Speaker 2 (01:21:01):
Apparently they kiss him made up?
Speaker 4 (01:21:03):
Did they really still?
Speaker 3 (01:21:04):
I thought they still got beef.
Speaker 2 (01:21:07):
Last I saw it was they kissed, not necessarily made up,
but he didn't confront of it. They had spoke since then.
Speaker 4 (01:21:14):
Yeah, okay, well he didn't.
Speaker 2 (01:21:16):
By the way, he didn't call him a hoe.
Speaker 4 (01:21:18):
He just used the analogy, and the analogy Lane was
the hoe, though he didn't. He didn't say Lane, you're
a hoe, but he said you can't turn a hoe
to a housewife. And in that analogy, Lane is the hoe.
So it's like, put it this way. So I got
called a hoe too.
Speaker 2 (01:21:35):
Okay. So Lane walks over to the kid. He's a
kid with a.
Speaker 4 (01:21:40):
Deep deep Bacsay, Hey, well I do an Octor Oxford
podcast now?
Speaker 2 (01:21:44):
And why does the fox horn Leahorn doing the.
Speaker 4 (01:21:47):
Old miss Now, I say Lane is a hoe, So
the kid blanks himself literally doesn't respond. Lane should have
stayed there and said something and waited for the kid
to respond. That was a I'm gonna go in with
my five security people, tell this kid to come into
my locker room and call me home and see what happens.
Speaker 2 (01:22:08):
And then he turns around heads in the locker room.
Let that you if you're gonna, if you're gonna have
beef with somebody in public like that, let it finish
it out. Let's see how that would have turned out.
The kid could have said, why didn't mean that, or yeah,
you're a hobiac, or you know nothing, nothing happened. He
said what he said, he turned around and left. Yeah,
it was not fun. I wanted to see this really
(01:22:30):
come to a tim hands. Sure, why not. But I
don't want to hear a word about how elis you
can't afford anything. I don't want to hear about the
state of Louisiana.
Speaker 4 (01:22:41):
Not being a or dentist, or roads, the schools.
Speaker 2 (01:22:47):
Or anything. I don't want to hear a word about it.
Speaker 3 (01:22:51):
Gordy, let's get those literacy rates up.
Speaker 4 (01:22:53):
Come on now.
Speaker 2 (01:22:54):
Yeah, I don't seriously, you are paying out Okay, you're
paying out fifty three million dollars and you're gonna give him.
By the way, did you see the deal eighty four
million Garndeed, there had no buy out. There ain't no
reduction there. I mean that he ain't getting The whole
(01:23:14):
damn thing is old Lane Kiffin.
Speaker 4 (01:23:17):
This is insane.
Speaker 2 (01:23:18):
But the number one thing I gotta get to aout
a minute for the news. No, Lane, you don't get
to coach your team. That is hysterical that you think
you could go stay with the team that is a
direct rival of yours. I could somewhat ROSSI see if
he was going to say, I don't know Washington or Hell,
I don't know Minnesota, but Ohio state, Ohio state. You're
(01:23:43):
in the dev You're in the fernile recruiting world known
as the sec gets. She asked at Baton Rouge, we're
gonna play without you and you don't get to have
the fun. Sorry, that them's the breaks.
Speaker 4 (01:23:55):
It's crazy, what a world we're living in.
Speaker 2 (01:24:00):
But and by the way, this whole talk of trying
to punish old miss in the playoff seating because of
kipping leaving that, why are you screwing the kids like that.
That's ridiculous.
Speaker 6 (01:24:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:24:12):
I wouldn't either, but I get why people are saying that,
especially now. It's different when Florida State was missing their
quarterback but they were undefeated and left out of a playoff.
Speaker 2 (01:24:25):
Yeah, I'm sorry.
Speaker 4 (01:24:26):
I get the argument, but I don't put any water
onto it is.
Speaker 2 (01:24:29):
Marty Smith's still at old Missus campus. By the way,
the poor cat guy who has been there for like
forty eight straight hours hadn't slept. Who's that Martin? The
sec guy that talks on ESPN has got the real
thick accent. Marty Smith, he's but he was there on site,
reporter of the whole time. Go look at Go Go
put no putt gone. You'll see it. It's very funny.
Speaker 4 (01:24:51):
Maybe it was a day you were gone. He was
on this show, I believe.
Speaker 2 (01:24:56):
Okay, was that a Gordy Git one of his besties?
Speaker 23 (01:24:59):
Right?
Speaker 3 (01:25:00):
It might have been a Dan Matthews.
Speaker 2 (01:25:01):
I don't know. All right, let's get to the news
at noon plus don't need nothing but a good time
from the Houston Sports Teams twelve noon Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 4 (01:25:09):
Say good night to this one signature call Craig White.
Speaker 2 (01:25:17):
Say good night. How about and then you got Robert
Ford says good morning, good afternoon, a good night. Yes,
I don't make any tourn of time reference until later.
Speaker 4 (01:25:29):
M maybe you should you.
Speaker 2 (01:25:32):
Know what I can I go to? Can I do it?
Good night Irene tonight?
Speaker 4 (01:25:36):
Maybe with the rockets he hits them with the melotonin.
Speaker 2 (01:25:39):
Night night. O lordy. We're just work shopping. We's brainstorming.
It's a live radio show. We were We're on two
hours and seven minutes. I think we've embarrassed ourselves.
Speaker 3 (01:25:51):
Yet, Well, not too bad. We'll see.
Speaker 4 (01:25:55):
Jonathan said he's gonna slap that a m oh you
argument up on social media yourself.
Speaker 3 (01:26:00):
We'll see how that goes for me.
Speaker 2 (01:26:02):
Oh my god. All right, So Jonathan, you don't think.
Speaker 24 (01:26:08):
Oh well, okay, not being biased because I was recruited
for OHU, But I'm with Ross on this. I think
the Red River is just you can't there's no other
rivalry I feel like in the Southern hemisphere other than
I guess what northern hemisphere for the United States? Southern
United States? Yeah, like I guess you would say Alabama
(01:26:28):
and Auburn. But other than that, I mean, well, other
rival state Michigan. People call the best rivalry.
Speaker 2 (01:26:35):
Well, I'll state Michigan it's the best. Is the best
college football rivalry period? Right?
Speaker 6 (01:26:39):
I agree?
Speaker 2 (01:26:40):
I would agree? Yeah, oh you Texas. I mean again,
the question is do you go civil war meaning in state,
or do you go neighboring states? Again, I don't know
if the geography makes that big of a difference to it.
Speaker 3 (01:26:52):
What's also two more accomplished programs.
Speaker 2 (01:26:54):
I mean, oh, here, cut here, cup it get it wrong?
Speaker 4 (01:26:59):
I mean, I'm sorry, I'm these facts are hurting your feelings,
not my feeling. I don't care not you you know
what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (01:27:07):
I mean, it is what it is.
Speaker 4 (01:27:09):
The program has not won a conference championship since nineteen
ninety eight. Where do I be that bad? They had
not been to an SEC championship game ever.
Speaker 2 (01:27:24):
So if Texas says that Oklahoma is there a big round,
everybody has to arrival. Now, granted I don't have a rival,
so maybe I can't.
Speaker 4 (01:27:29):
I would say the biggest program without a big rival
would be LSU without a true I mean, Alabama kind of,
but they have Auburn and m kind of. But anim
in Texas, I mean, who's LSU's number. Wuld that'd be
a question for Chris Gordy. They kind of don't have
a true geographic they play for that they oh, come
on now, they play for that boot Trophy with Arkansas.
(01:27:51):
But it's like, I don't know, they kind of have
like three half rivals or four. I don't even know
how many Tulane I mean no, but that nobody denies
they are program with a great history.
Speaker 2 (01:28:01):
I mean, by the way, the second season of Lane
Kiffin in LSU now isn't the first season which will
be coming up his second season, we'll open up in Houston,
Texas against our beloved Houston Cougars.
Speaker 4 (01:28:14):
The long Horns play at LSU next year in Tiger Stadium.
Speaker 2 (01:28:17):
Ooh, you gotta be there for that one. I start saving. Now.
Let me take you go to our bosses right now. Nah,
So you say you'll give up all your bonuses tickets for.
Speaker 3 (01:28:31):
Texas LSU, they would say yes. I would say no.
Speaker 2 (01:28:36):
Let's get quickly to the news at noon, ten minutes
past twelve o'clock here on Sports Talk seven eighty, what's
going on in the world of sports?
Speaker 4 (01:28:42):
See Russell Ellman is a busy of sports Weekend of course,
we talked about the Longhorns knocking off the Texas A
and m Aggie's and ruining their undefeated season, but they're
still going to the playoffs, so they got the consolation
prize there. Long Horns looks like they're not going to
the playoffs after nothing broke their way on Saturday. Elsewhere,
(01:29:03):
of course, though, how about your Houston Texans with their
fourth straight victory on the road against the Indianapolis Colts
and division leaders. They toppled them with a twenty to
sixteen victory. Despite miscues with penalties and a lack of
aggressiveness from their head coach, they were still able to
get the victory twenty to sixteen, and they've won four straight,
(01:29:26):
five of the last six.
Speaker 2 (01:29:30):
By the way, I'll have a Texans take as part
to tell the truth coming up at the bottom of
the arm that's up on that. You might be pleased
or you might not be. You never know, you care
which one I'm telling the truth. By the way, I'll
have three lies in one.
Speaker 4 (01:29:44):
Truth today, answer one truth. Okay, sounds good? Elsewhere the
rules at Dude, Matthew, you're in a beautiful Salt Lake
City meeting up with your old folks, you guys having
a couple of near beers. Everything all right over there
in Salt Lake City.
Speaker 2 (01:29:57):
I am going to sit in my room until tip time.
It snowed. Yesterday it was cold, yucky. Today it's beautiful,
but it's cold. So would you look at.
Speaker 3 (01:30:05):
A nice little stroll in the snow.
Speaker 2 (01:30:07):
It's all melted by now.
Speaker 3 (01:30:08):
Oh, why don't you get to the stroll in the.
Speaker 4 (01:30:10):
Snow melt one twenty nine to one, oh one of
the Houston Rockets over the Utah Jazz thirteen and four.
You know, every pregame show I lay out the records
for the team, and it just feels so good to say, uh,
and I'm doing it tonight to say thirteen and your
thirteen and four Houston Rockets. It feels great. But then
(01:30:31):
the Oklahoma City Thunder are twenty and one and the
Lakers are fifteen and four.
Speaker 2 (01:30:38):
Let me tell you this. I am going to tell
you that its greatest at what you just said, and
it's completely accurate. I look at the Oklahoma City Thunders
record and I just cry, twelve in a row. They
have one loss ross, one stinking loss.
Speaker 4 (01:30:57):
Their all time points original twelve point is being surpassed.
Right now, there's it's fifteen point five by two and
a half points. They're insane. And is Jalen Williams Phuzy
finally come back.
Speaker 2 (01:31:13):
I don't even pay attention to them. I don't care
all those SGA just goes to the free throwing fifteen.
Speaker 3 (01:31:17):
Okay, Jalen Wims is at least back one, not at least.
Speaker 4 (01:31:20):
I mean, there's.
Speaker 2 (01:31:22):
Hartenstegin's hurt.
Speaker 4 (01:31:23):
There is a Okay, Positives the only playing two games
for them and they're twenty and one, so they're they're
eighteen and one without them, two and oh with them.
Speaker 2 (01:31:32):
Damn it. That's kind everybody. Everybody listen to the sound
of my voice. Say a small prayer for misfree throws
officiating that goes against Oklahoma City and I don't know
a one for seventeen day from chet Holgren.
Speaker 4 (01:31:51):
Well, they're gonna need that for four out of game,
four games out of seven if they played.
Speaker 2 (01:31:54):
In the playoffs. Okay, say those prayers for like late May.
Speaker 4 (01:31:58):
All right, I'll see what I can do, Matthew and elsewhere.
The I would say biggest national sports news would be
Lane Kiffin becoming the head coach at LSU after leaving
Ole Miss and sec power a guaranteed playoff team.
Speaker 3 (01:32:15):
He says thanks, but no thanks.
Speaker 4 (01:32:18):
He is going to coach the Louisiana State University Tigers.
Speaker 2 (01:32:23):
I can't live our l s U like Eddie Martini.
Our boss is not running at the studio and talk
to you by why we're going to wall to wall
lane Kiffin coverage.
Speaker 3 (01:32:30):
I thought we would have gotten the day off.
Speaker 2 (01:32:33):
Well, how is the sales pit today? Is it busy?
I'm sure yes?
Speaker 4 (01:32:36):
Actually yeah, A lot of people make the calls working, working,
leads looking good.
Speaker 2 (01:32:42):
If you like to be a sponsor on the Matt
Thomas Show, let's go rates are very friendly. You could
have the two of us speak on behalf of your company.
Speaker 4 (01:32:49):
Extremely friendly friendly. You don't want to pay those Michael
Berry prices.
Speaker 2 (01:32:53):
You can get my god, Michael, can I do this?
Indian a commercial row here?
Speaker 3 (01:33:00):
His reach is slightly because of ours slightly.
Speaker 2 (01:33:02):
It's slightly older. But that's a different issue for a
different times. It's a man. It's a good group though.
Speaker 4 (01:33:08):
I heart Media Houston. I heard who's our salesperson today?
Ross will let you just missing the ultimate Spurs fan.
She gets it a lot, oh okay, oh okay, who.
Speaker 2 (01:33:20):
And ask for Missy seven one three two one two
eight thousand, it's an automated person. I'm a live operator anymore.
Seven one three two one two eight thousand, ask for
and that is a news No, I was saying, it's
it's a it's anonymous what is Yeah? I mean I
wouldn't wouldn't it Just just telling you we don't have
a live person there, so just say ask you can
(01:33:42):
punch I guess you can't punch it? And Missy the
Ultimate Spurs Fan seven one three two one two five
seven ninety seven one three two one two five seven
nine zero ROSSI, was there a and we don't answer this,
We're gonna go break. Was there a conflict of interest
with ESPN? And how they were all praying that Lane
(01:34:05):
Kiffen could coach old miss We'll discuss that next twelve
sixteen plus the Texans. We'll get to that as well.
And to tell the truth, bottom of the hour here
on seven ninety twenty one, I'm seven ninety always a
mountain times like twelve twenty one, bat and Ross wevie here,
I mean Salt Lake and Mountain time zone. By the way, deep.
(01:34:26):
I agree with you. Every time you can be talking
about the best times of the country is right here
in the mountain. Like last night's football game into overtime
and it was still in before ten o'clock. I was like,
this is great, it's nice. And eleven o'clock kick times
for the NFL games, the second game starts at two thirty,
so even if they go like three hours, you're still
(01:34:46):
at six o'clocking. Stalton do stuff. Yeah, Mountain time zone,
is it?
Speaker 4 (01:34:49):
Mountain time is very naice, right, Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:34:52):
Seven one three two one two five, seven ninety If
you want to chime in, we always appreciate the nooners. Uh,
you want to come in and be a part of it,
seven to one, then nooner seven one three two one
two five seven ninety seven one three two one two
five seven and we have to tell the truth coming
up at the bottom of the hour. Okay, So Booker
McFarlane and you know, I spent a lot of time
(01:35:12):
watching football this weekend, as most of Ustius. We were
just kind of chill. Accent and Kirk Kurbstreet are just
selling it like a mother. You you need to let
Lane coach for all business. You deserved this opportunity. I
was like, are you kidding me? And then come to
find out all these broadcasting people of the same agent
like Jimmy Sex did I'd be like, oh, really, the
conflict of interest? Yes, I didn't know that you have
(01:35:35):
esp you have ESPN. Then you say, no, we would
never tell our people what to say and not to say. Meanwhile,
ESPN about five years ago got rid of their ambudsman
because the am buzzmen was getting crushed because there was
a conflict of interest in everything they did. So I
just thought it was very funny that you had a
lot of these broadcast people that were telling the whole
world how Lane Kiffin should have a chance to coach
(01:35:57):
in these games were also the same client as Jimmy
Sex and the most powerful college agent working today, and
also appairently a successful broadcast agent too. So I just
thought it was very funny that there was such a
great defense for guys like Lane Kiffen when they were
represented by the same person.
Speaker 3 (01:36:14):
Yeah, I didn't.
Speaker 4 (01:36:15):
I didn't know that, And I didn't hear everybody stump
stumping for him to coach the team, like that's crazy.
Speaker 3 (01:36:21):
You left, you got a new job, go to your
new job.
Speaker 2 (01:36:25):
Go to your new job. And like I said, maybe
there's a few exceptions, like the Tulane coach is going
to coach the team before is going to Florida, so
he but Lane does. But the other people don't know
the baggage that Lane's got. Lane's got the baggage Lane
does this. Yes, help me out, Ross, because you know,
I'm not mister analogy.
Speaker 4 (01:36:43):
He's had ugly exits, everyone looking for a hotter girl.
Oh and it was ugly breakups. Looking it's literally a
trail of tears. Yeah, and he's like, I don't know
what I'm gonna do. I've had a chance to think
about this year. I mean, what a load of crock
(01:37:03):
of crap that is.
Speaker 2 (01:37:04):
The guy is always as soon as he lands somewhere,
he's looking for the next job right away. You don't
mean to tell me of Caleb de Boor. I mean,
there is just a few people that think he might
leave Alabama for Penn State. I don't think it shouldn't
what he should do that. But if Caleb de Bor
gets sideways in al Cala, I don't care. His name
is Debor, just call him. We'll call him Ce Debor.
(01:37:27):
If he leaves, you don't think he wants that job?
Speaker 15 (01:37:32):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (01:37:32):
If that would be pretty funny for the LSU head
coach to leave for the Alabama job. It's happened once,
it did Nick Saban. He went to Dolphins in between.
Speaker 2 (01:37:46):
But you know what I'm saying, I mean, yeah, yeah,
he's no if there's anybody that's gonna leave a job,
I mean, put this way, if you are a betting man,
which I am, which you are, if I gave you
the over under on eight years for a lane for
lane at LSU, under the over under, he has a
(01:38:11):
seven year contract for twelve million dollars a year fully
get ronteed eighty four MILLI coming his way. Does he
does he even finish out that contract?
Speaker 4 (01:38:23):
I would the the smart money would be on the under.
And that's pretty basically And that's not even trying to
say Elie.
Speaker 3 (01:38:29):
That's like all these coaches.
Speaker 4 (01:38:33):
I mean, Brian Kelly won ten games, ten games, nine games,
and then he was five and three and got fired
at LSU.
Speaker 2 (01:38:40):
Like, who's leaving? Is Freeman that never gonna leave Notre Dame?
Speaker 3 (01:38:44):
I would say probably, yes, Okay.
Speaker 2 (01:38:49):
Give me somebody else that's been around for a while.
That's not leaving. Do you think Lincoln Riley's long for you?
Speaker 3 (01:38:54):
With Kirby Smart is a made man right now?
Speaker 2 (01:38:56):
Yeah, that's one that's true. I don't think you don't think.
I don't know if Dabbo's gonna finish at Clemson.
Speaker 3 (01:39:03):
I don't think so. Yeah, I mean, yeah, I'm with you.
I'm agreeing with you.
Speaker 2 (01:39:07):
I don't know. I'm not talking about guys that are like,
for instance, I think Willie Fritz is his last jobs
of Houston. I'm gonna show you saying an example. But
I'm talking about guys that have been there for a
while that plan on staying there for even like a
Nick Saban, a long tenured guy at Alabama. It's my point,
Steve Spurrier for the long time at Florida before he left.
I'm just talking about that. Guys have just gotten jobs.
I'm saying that is Lane Kiffen is the last head
(01:39:30):
he puts on at LSU cap Probably probably not.
Speaker 4 (01:39:34):
They the odds say, no, that's just that's every coach.
Speaker 15 (01:39:40):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:39:40):
Is it because he's just he's Is he looking for
the next dollar? Is he looking for the next challenge?
Is he does he get bored? Easily.
Speaker 4 (01:39:47):
I don't know, I was. I was quite delighting in
these Uh there was the tech SAgs message board post
being post about fire Elco.
Speaker 3 (01:39:56):
The dude's eleven and.
Speaker 2 (01:39:57):
One and by the way I put it, put texaggs
dot com, textags TV, whatever the hell that is. Sometimes
there are things you shouldn't do textags TV. And I'm
sure you're a very reputable, nice group of people that
take care of your audience with all the Texas information
you want. They do, But they were doing the predictions
(01:40:17):
of the game. If you work for text Aggs TV
or you're a guest on textags TV, who you pick
it between A and M and Texas? I mean, don't
even don't don't even do the segment because you look
like a jackass if you're all all four of the
dudes picked.
Speaker 10 (01:40:34):
A and M.
Speaker 4 (01:40:34):
Duh, they were favored in the game.
Speaker 2 (01:40:37):
But imagine being the guy at texts Aggs TV on
the set going, you know, at the end of the day,
I really think Texas with the home field's gonna have
the it's gonna win the football game. You'd be a
run out of there in two seconds. M. It's like, uh,
you know, look, uh I don't think Mark Vanderbert and
Texans game, says man. Texas playing the Colts like Jonathan
(01:40:59):
Taylor is gonna have a big game. I think Colts
win this one. Twenty one seventeen. Get ready for my
call next.
Speaker 3 (01:41:03):
This is how it goes. Yeah, they're on that's how
their bread is buttered.
Speaker 2 (01:41:06):
That's fine.
Speaker 3 (01:41:06):
They're on a Homer network.
Speaker 2 (01:41:08):
Doctor, don't even do it.
Speaker 3 (01:41:10):
Don't even do it.
Speaker 4 (01:41:11):
Then they're very successful over everything.
Speaker 2 (01:41:13):
I think they're very successful. But all four of are
like thirty four nineteen and then I got this one.
Speaker 14 (01:41:19):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:41:19):
I was like, y'all are breaking down something we all
knew you were going to say it.
Speaker 3 (01:41:22):
And it's the state owned media.
Speaker 4 (01:41:25):
Yeah, Texas anailm is number one.
Speaker 3 (01:41:28):
We will defeat. They give it Longhorns.
Speaker 2 (01:41:31):
As the number one cottage station, number one, Brian, number one, Austin. Yeah, yeah, I.
Speaker 6 (01:41:39):
Don't hate them.
Speaker 4 (01:41:40):
I mean that's I'm sure all the the Orange Blood's
and all that, we're probably all picking Texas.
Speaker 2 (01:41:45):
Oh you know, we gotta go fine. Hey, don't don't
Orange Bloods have a TV channel. I don't know that'd
be hysterical. Let's get who's a chip? Brown Chip? What
you got in the game.
Speaker 4 (01:41:55):
I like Aggie's by eleven, and Chip might do that.
He doesn't troll on every now and then.
Speaker 2 (01:42:01):
Craig Way on the show, Craig, who you got in
this game? Ifficult time? I think urs is gonna throw
two picks. I got the Eggies by a field goal.
Speaker 4 (01:42:09):
Hey, I picked the long Horns.
Speaker 2 (01:42:11):
Yeah shit, I was right. Granted I'd picked the Cougars
who went all twelve games, and yeah, come on, now
I was right nine times wrong three. Yeah. I don't
predict the Rockets to go eighty two, and oh.
Speaker 4 (01:42:27):
You could.
Speaker 2 (01:42:28):
I did have him going seventy eight and four, but
that may not happen.
Speaker 3 (01:42:31):
Right more than you be wrong?
Speaker 2 (01:42:32):
That's true, all right? To tell the truth is up next,
Marty and Steven, do not go anywhere. We'll get to
you guys as well. To tell the truth coming up
in mere moments twelve thirty here on Sports Talk seven.
(01:43:05):
But the great thing is, ladies and gentlemen, I do
know how to tell the truth. But in these sports
takes three of them. Jonathan and Ross are lies. One
is the truth? Which one of these four? Am I
telling the truth? Ross? How many? That means that are
(01:43:26):
the truth? What I'm about to tell you? How many one?
How many lies? Jonathan Thress. Okay, I was looking at
a run through this just to make sure. Here we go.
Speaker 3 (01:43:40):
Number one, switching it up every week.
Speaker 2 (01:43:42):
I know. Number One, if the Texans beat the Chiefs
on Sunday night, I'm changing my take. You can get
ready for a Texans postseason. Yet again, I can already
(01:44:02):
get ready. I think you have to beat the Chiefs
in order to make the postseason. Doesn't mean it's a guarantee,
but I think with the way things are moving on,
they must win game.
Speaker 15 (01:44:14):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:44:14):
I'm not saying that, I'm saying if they do it,
I'm changing my mind. The Texans are going to the postseason.
The Cardinals and Raiders right after that. But then you
have the Chargers and the Colts pulls out the year
Dub and dub. My take again is if the Texans
beat the Chiefs, I'm changing my mind. Number Two. At
(01:44:39):
the end of the day, LSU is going to regret
poaching Lane Kiffin away from old miss You. Okay. Number three,
it was announced today as a matter of fact, boys
that Dick Vital and Charles bark We are going to
(01:45:00):
team up on a first four tournament game for TNT,
they will work together for a game on ESPN and
the regular season. This is gonna be fantastic much watch television.
Two of the most dynamic personalities in basketball history on
microphone together for a game. It's gonna be must watch
(01:45:23):
television forgetting about who they're playing. It's gonna add entertainment
value that we've missed in these games. So good news
that by Talent and Barkley are working together on a
tournament game for TNT and a regular season game for ESPN.
It's been a long time coming. By Talon Barkley together
on a broadcast. And number four, if there was ever
(01:45:45):
going to be a college football commissioner to regulate coaching changes,
portal nil the man I would choose to run this
college football commission to be the commission of Nick Saban,
which one of the four am I telling the truth
(01:46:06):
three lines in a mix. Number one, if the Texans
beak the Chiefs, they're going to the playoffs. Number two
at the end of the day, LSU is going to
regret poaching Lane Kiffin. Number three, it is so cool
that Dick Yow and Charles Barker are gonna work together
on a TNT and ESPN broadcast of college basketball at
(01:46:27):
allads of personality of those games. And number four, if
there was ever to be a college football commissioner, I
would choose Nick Saban to be my first commissioner. Which
one of those four? Am I telling the truth?
Speaker 3 (01:46:44):
Here's some bad takes.
Speaker 2 (01:46:45):
I don't know how.
Speaker 4 (01:46:46):
I don't know how to suss out which one you
actually believe? No, I know my answer, Oh you do?
Three is easy to dismiss that terrible.
Speaker 24 (01:46:56):
I know deep down Matt still has hope in the
Chiefs and in the Texans show that.
Speaker 3 (01:47:02):
People actually think that Texans.
Speaker 2 (01:47:03):
Are wore something.
Speaker 3 (01:47:04):
So I'm going with one.
Speaker 4 (01:47:08):
Can you repeat number one, you're guaranteeing they're in the playoffs?
Speaker 2 (01:47:10):
Or well, refrain in my mind that the Texans they
will have shown enough to me that you know what,
they're going to make the playoffs?
Speaker 4 (01:47:18):
And Nick Saban's too old to be a commissioner. He's
seventy he's almost seventy five years old. I would agree
if I.
Speaker 2 (01:47:24):
If he's a commissioner, he's a figure. He's going to
have tenants.
Speaker 3 (01:47:29):
But he's been working for so long time.
Speaker 2 (01:47:30):
I'm with you. I'll go with one.
Speaker 4 (01:47:31):
One is the one kind of screamed out to me
when he said it, because I mean, that's how can
you say they're not going to make the playoff. But see,
it's Texans hater, Matt, that's what you got to realize,
and its Chiefs lover. A Texans real man is a
Chiefs hater and a Texans lover. You're right, So it's
kind of hard to feel what he truly believes in
his heart, But I'm with you. One one is the
one that kind of jumped out to me. I could
(01:47:53):
see him believing Number two. Yeah, but he was the
one saying that Lane Kiffins should go or was going
to go.
Speaker 3 (01:48:03):
I don't think he.
Speaker 4 (01:48:04):
Said he was going to stay. Well then then he
said he was.
Speaker 2 (01:48:06):
I wanted him to stay. He didn't stay though, right,
I said, I want him to stay. He didn't stay. Well,
he said he was going to on one of these
believe it or not. I said, if she offers the
money that was out there being reporting to take the.
Speaker 4 (01:48:19):
T I'm just talking about. It was to tell the
truth when it was first getting floated out. Yeah, I'll
go with one as well. Arly dick Y tal is
Way past his prime.
Speaker 2 (01:48:31):
Poor guy Charles Charles Barkley couldn't name five college basketball players.
I'm sure it'll be a spectacle. And I love Charles Barkley,
He's one of the greatest persons. But dick By Talent,
I mean, God love him, but he is just he's
He's now replaced Lee Corso As. We got to retire
him pretty quick. I have no interest in watching dick
By Talent and Charles Barkley talk about teams. They have
(01:48:52):
no idea what the hell they're talking about. That was
an easy one. Guys. Nick Saban, if he was fifty
one years old, would love the NIL. He would love
the transfer portal. He would love to be able to
leave in the middle of a season. He's old. So
the only reason why he's not he's admonishing all this
(01:49:15):
is because he's not actively involved in it. He would
not do anything to stop what is going on in
football today. He'd be a lousy commissioner, no chance, no
way what I want. Nick said of being a college
commissioner of the to firmly regulate how things are going
in college for athletics. So that was an easy one.
Then it comes down to me being the Texans realist,
(01:49:37):
not a Texans hater, not a Texans level but a
Texans realist. That's why I am who I am is
because I'm a realist. I give it to you reels,
as the kids would say, boys, and I'm giving too, realists.
If the Texans beat the Chiefs, they're going to the playoffs.
That's what I believe. Gentlemen. You both.
Speaker 3 (01:49:54):
Finally bat in two hundred.
Speaker 2 (01:49:58):
Here's the reason. Say it because not only do you
knock the Chiefs further down the order, guys, but you're
gonna have a tiebreaker, You're gonna have another AFC conference win.
All the tie breakers are gonna help the Texans move up.
So that's the reason why I think winning this game
because again, you do have as ross you said, you
(01:50:19):
do have the Cardinals, you do have the Raiders who
have long mailed it in. It won't nearly has put
as much pressure on the last two there. We have
put some pressure on it for sure. And by the way,
that Week eighteen game with the Colts may mean a
lot more because now the Colts have fallen off. I
I think you run three, you get three more. That
puts them at ten wins. And I told you this
a long time ago. I think if the Texans got
(01:50:40):
the ten wins, they're going to the playoffs, and with
a win over Kansas City, that's gonna be a very
crucial typebreaker. Texans beat the Chiefs this Sunday, They're going
to the postseason. LSU's not We're gonna regret Lane Kipin.
You can't. You can't court them like you've been courting
them all this and regret the decision. He's gonna win
football games. But Rossie, you know I talked about earlier.
(01:51:01):
He's going to leave you too, just like he left
everywhere else. He's gone, So just be ready for baton rouge.
He leaving you.
Speaker 4 (01:51:06):
I mean, Brian Kelly was a major coup. He was
a multiple time AP Coach of the Year. And I
thought it was I thought it was going to be
a great hire for LSU. I thought it was a
huge win getting I mean, Notre Dame is college football royalty,
it is. And he he he was gone in four years.
(01:51:27):
Just the nature of the beast.
Speaker 2 (01:51:30):
Scott, he's up on the self righteousness ragging on Kiffin
for leaving LSU. Scott, you're not listening to the show.
Bro I don't blame him for leaving LSU, for leaving
old Miss. I blame him for trying to do what
is it to make the cake? Bake the cake and
eat it too.
Speaker 4 (01:51:47):
You can't do that. Yeah, And that is what I'm arking.
He's playing victim like. Yeah, and apparently he didn't even
live with his dog Juice. Who his dog juice that
he used for pr he leaving the Yes, he's a person.
Speaker 2 (01:52:06):
What a douchebag? You know what you're here? Nousee you
here the lsha you heard.
Speaker 3 (01:52:10):
A douchebag here? I just I just retweeted it.
Speaker 2 (01:52:15):
Yeah, so Scott, my my great listener who sends me
emails all the time. I'm not ragging on. I'm leaving
go on Lsu. I tell him take the deal, take it.
But don't think you can go coach. Oh miss, you
don't get that, right, you don't get both. And if
this dog, if this dog tweet is real that you
just retweeted, it's not nice, not nice at all all.
(01:52:38):
Right to the phones were go. Next Our time is
twelve forty five. It is The Matt Thomas Show with
Ross seven one three two one two five seven ninety
seven one three, two, one, two five, seven ninety Hey,
did you have a party? Did you have family over
at Thanksgiving? Did your icemanger go down?
Speaker 18 (01:52:56):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:52:56):
I heard about it. Well that's why you gotta call
uptown apply on your pair. Did you refrigerator not keep
the leftover his coal like you wanted them to? Did
you have an issue with the keeping the jellow mold moldy.
We got some folks to get to you on the phones,
and let's start with Marty and Katie at twelve fifty
(01:53:20):
one on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross Marty, thank
you for holding.
Speaker 3 (01:53:22):
Good afternoon, Good afternoon, man.
Speaker 23 (01:53:26):
Let me tell you something.
Speaker 12 (01:53:27):
I'm gonna it's a sad day and buy you nation.
Speaker 6 (01:53:30):
I don't know what.
Speaker 13 (01:53:31):
Makes folks believe that Lane Kicking is gonna be gonna
come in and turn around the program. Hey, they won
seven games lngpen. You know Lane is not gonna make
a difference and get Let me tell you something. I
give Lane to you.
Speaker 5 (01:53:46):
You said that he's a good call.
Speaker 13 (01:53:48):
I'll give him two years in the LSU before they
boot him on now before he started sucking up all
the cross fish, eating all alligator. They're not gonna tolerated, buddy.
They're not gonna tolerated.
Speaker 23 (01:53:59):
Two.
Speaker 13 (01:54:00):
I don't like nobody likes Lane Kipping. Okay, nobody likes him, buddy.
He's not a very likable guy.
Speaker 2 (01:54:07):
No, he's a hateable person. He's a hateable person. But
guess what, you don't have to worry about that when
you got eighteen year olds are ready to hand him
six hundred thousand dollars up play football. They'll love him eventually.
And here's the other thing. He was the best guy
out there. He was the number one go to guy.
And if you're LSU, you want the number one guy.
You have an attractive job. It's a great recruiting base.
(01:54:30):
Apparently you got more money than god there.
Speaker 7 (01:54:32):
It's the job it was.
Speaker 2 (01:54:34):
He wasn't He was the number one selection period.
Speaker 7 (01:54:38):
Man.
Speaker 13 (01:54:38):
I'm just telling you it's a bad idea.
Speaker 6 (01:54:40):
But it's a bad idea.
Speaker 13 (01:54:42):
I'm just I'll ask you a rule to day that
they hot him.
Speaker 23 (01:54:45):
So I'm gonna tell you that's so.
Speaker 2 (01:54:46):
I'm gonna tell you, all right, thank you for the
phone call, Marty. Good stuff. Well they're not, by the way,
you can't get rid him in two years, Russ. I
don't where they're getting this money to begin with, I
don't particularly care, but if you're if you're doing this
in two years, I would think you'd have to have
it basically a national state auditor the money in that state.
I mean, because there there's something to take donations.
Speaker 3 (01:55:09):
Yeah, everyone in empty out there water cans full of
pennies cross.
Speaker 2 (01:55:14):
Like, who is LSU's big money. I mean, who are
these people? I mean, I don't know a rubbish ow.
I mean Tippadau's fan boats kicking in big maybe is it?
Is it raising? Is it raising rains? Is that what
it is? Guess?
Speaker 9 (01:55:28):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:55:29):
The next the next tender basket's gonna cost me nineteen dollars?
Speaker 5 (01:55:33):
Is that?
Speaker 23 (01:55:33):
Is that?
Speaker 2 (01:55:33):
Why the so expensive?
Speaker 4 (01:55:35):
I'm not going to get those mid tenders anyways.
Speaker 2 (01:55:37):
Ooh, good tenders. Come on, No, don't hate on the
mid toast is good, the fries are good. I haven't
eat the sauce.
Speaker 3 (01:55:45):
The sauce is good.
Speaker 4 (01:55:46):
This law is not good. The toast is good and
the fries are fine, but without that sauce, it's nothing.
The sauce is very good. Okay, I got a hot
take for you. Without the sauce, the the whataburger tenders better?
Speaker 2 (01:56:00):
What's up? Whoa come out?
Speaker 3 (01:56:02):
Just how let you boy?
Speaker 6 (01:56:03):
What's up?
Speaker 2 (01:56:05):
Come on LSU. Let's go Cajun Nation, get on them,
get it right now, let's go. No wonder our sales
folks are not in the office today because May the
ninety I got LSU ties there, haven't had a celebration.
Must be it.
Speaker 4 (01:56:20):
I'm trying to look for old missus great wins here
this year. Georgia State, go ahead, Kentucky, Big Arkansas, Oh, Tulane, LSU.
Home for LSU. How many losses did ls you'd end
with Washington State lost to Georgia. Okay, one at Oklahoma.
(01:56:43):
That's a good one, I guess you know, home for California,
the Citadel Florida, and Mississippi State at Mississippi State.
Speaker 2 (01:56:53):
Oh my gosh. That that's a mid record. That's a
mid season all right. So let me ask you this
then if I'm saying it doesn't necessarily mean it's gospel.
But who's thet Who is the hottest coaching commodity this year?
Speaker 3 (01:57:07):
It was Lane Kiffin.
Speaker 2 (01:57:09):
It was Lane Yeah one. James Franklin holthough he got
a job already.
Speaker 3 (01:57:16):
That's true.
Speaker 2 (01:57:17):
People, Florida. People are wigging out at Florida's new hire.
They're wigging out at Sadderfield, who was at Memphis is
now running Arkansas. And there are kids outside of the
stadium in Arkansas trying to live podcast of how this
was a horrible decision by Arkansas. I mean people were
grumpy about their coaching hires.
Speaker 4 (01:57:35):
Yeah, it's it's just go ahead.
Speaker 2 (01:57:39):
We're just a finicky bunch. It's a wile while West
everybody wants.
Speaker 4 (01:57:42):
I mean, there's only a handful of coaches who are
our truly year to year difference makers, and everybody else
is scrambling to try to find their one and then
firing them within two three years and paying big payouts
and millions of dollars and just keep on churning the
coaching carousel.
Speaker 2 (01:57:57):
Like if we were doing Clemson sports right other day,
are we still team Dabbo? Probably not?
Speaker 4 (01:58:04):
Is he still not hitting the portal and not building
good classes? He's I mean, he's going down with it
on his morals and that's fine, but Clemson not even
where is Clemton? What what was Clemson's record this year?
He can be out of there.
Speaker 2 (01:58:20):
Uh? They beat South Carolina over the weekend, so good
for them.
Speaker 4 (01:58:23):
Carolina South Carolina sucks. Right, Yeah, let's see seven and
five Clemson Tigers. Oh, they won their last four, so
they're going to a bowl, one of those over Furman.
Speaker 2 (01:58:37):
Maybe they'll play Texas in the in bowl game. You
don't know, Yeah, Texas watch Texas. Clemson is sad. Let's
go to Archie Manage Ready. Arch is back.
Speaker 23 (01:58:52):
Hey guys, thanks for taking my call today. I hope
you're doing well after the holiday. My I just you know,
it's not a game that's you know, fresh on everybody's mind,
but because it happened to damn near a week ago,
but I kind of wanted to talk about that Golden
State Warriors game and the performance that Reach Shepherd had.
(01:59:13):
My obviously, it was just one game, and you know,
he uh played incredible. But my hot take at the
turkey table after that game was that I think Reech
Shepherd's got.
Speaker 10 (01:59:25):
To be the primary point guard on this team. I
think when Amen does it, it's kind of hurts his
game and we're kind of seeing it because it's field
goal percentage is like at an all time low, and
I just like the way that Reed kind of spreads
the court, because you know, what I'm seeing is that,
(01:59:46):
you know, when when Amen brings the ball up, you've
got basically four guys in the box immediately because they
know he's not gonna shoot, you know, and when he does,
he you know, he's breaking it, you know, West with Red,
you know, they have to respect his shot. And I mean,
to me, he's the much better ball handle. He's the
best ball handler on the team, you know. I mean,
(02:00:06):
he's not going to get twenty five shots a game
like he did in Golden State with Kevin Durant on
the court, But I mean, going forward, I think he's
better poised to be the primary point guard for the Rockets.
Speaker 2 (02:00:18):
What do you guys think, Well, I'm going to look
up your numbers here on his field goal percentage because
entering today, Amen Thompson shooting forty seven percent from the floor.
A rookie year, he shot fifty four percent fifty six percent,
so it's about a ten percent drop. Now, granted there's
a way smaller sample size on the side. The three
(02:00:40):
point shot has not been an asset to him at all,
never really was, but it's really not very good this year.
At uh, where is he coming in at three point percentage.
Let's take a look at twenty two percent. Oh lord,
I don't know. I he's such a fantastic athlete that
I want him involved in the game. Whether it's more
(02:01:01):
at the dunker spot, maybe it's more with the ball
not in his hand, I get it, but you do
need you know, the question is going to be if
you put reading the starting lineup, are you do you
want to give Aaron Holliday twenty minutes off the bench
as a backup point or do you want to you know,
space them out like they used to do with Chris
Paul and James Harden, where you pull one of the
guys early and let the other guy handle the ball, handling,
(02:01:22):
the responsibilities. These are things that still to be worked out.
I don't think a man's having a bad season. He
just has. He's been something a little bit in the
percentages down and obviously the three point shots not falling
for him. I think he's in a really I think
he's in a good job on all circumstances. Fred van
Vliet was just he laded his position. Fred van Vliet
didn't turn the ball over. Fred van Vliet carried a
lot of the heavy load drib on the basketball and
(02:01:43):
now you're kind of having to do it by committee
right now.
Speaker 10 (02:01:48):
Yeah, I mean that totally makes you know a lot
of sense.
Speaker 23 (02:01:52):
I think what I find the most.
Speaker 10 (02:01:54):
Attractive when a read is the primary spoint card is
that he can shoot it from any spot on the court.
You know, he doesn't need to be you know, he's
not getting all these shots on the baseline, you know,
from like kickouts or anything like that. He's like actually
able to create his shot, which you know a man
can do it. I'm not saying he's a bad player
at all. You know, he's great. He's their most dynamic player,
(02:02:15):
you know. But as like the primary point guard position,
I think I think Reid is better suited for what
this team has around him. But I get the the
kind of argument that maybe you want those minutes coming
off the bench as opposed to starting where he's not
going to get a lot of shots.
Speaker 23 (02:02:31):
So appreciate the dialogue.
Speaker 4 (02:02:33):
Guys, he started their last three games. I mean, he's
been get earning more time.
Speaker 2 (02:02:40):
Yeah. I just my point is that you're just asking
a man to do more ball haling than they ever
did in the previous two years of his NBA curse.
There's there's going to be a little bit of a
change to his game.
Speaker 4 (02:02:50):
Yeah, and a men's a better playmaker than Reid right now,
and again reads A men's going to crash the boards harder,
he is going to draw more Conde.
Speaker 2 (02:03:00):
But they both have positive attributes. I mean again, I
ain't complaining about e they want them at this point.
I'm very pleased with them. I don't think it's one
gets better if if one plays more, or a men's
game changed dramatically different. I reads r anything.
Speaker 4 (02:03:13):
I mean, I mostly just listen to the game. But
didn't Reid start yesterday with the regular starting lineup, So.
Speaker 2 (02:03:18):
I mean, yeah, yeah, he's in. Okay, so yeah he's
playing more.
Speaker 3 (02:03:21):
We're fifteen games into the season.
Speaker 2 (02:03:23):
It's in.
Speaker 4 (02:03:24):
Reid's been playing better, and he's been getting more minutes,
and now he's started their last three games.
Speaker 2 (02:03:28):
Yeah, and you know, again it does. It does weaken
your bench a little bit in terms of, you know,
wing players. But you know, if Aaron Holliday wants to
come through and give you ten points off the bench
and give you some good minutes to point guard. Again,
we're sitting here, I don't know dissecting a basketball team.
(02:03:51):
It's thirteen and four and bludgeting people.
Speaker 3 (02:03:55):
Yeah, they're doing quite well.
Speaker 4 (02:03:57):
And their one loss was the tough one against over
this last not one loss, but over there last nine,
that Nuggets game, that one.
Speaker 2 (02:04:06):
Hurt Denver, San Antonio, Oklahoma. Four teams are gonna all
win fifty games this year. They end up dogging a
group of there. You know what I mean?
Speaker 4 (02:04:18):
The West is so murderous, so good.
Speaker 2 (02:04:20):
Don't I'm talking about it. We don't want to talk
about it. I want to talk about a rocket's annihilation
of the Utah Jazz tonight.
Speaker 6 (02:04:29):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (02:04:32):
By the way, if you got in on the win total,
the wind total invent Fred van Vliet got hurt dropped
in the high forties for some people. I don't know
if you jumped in on that, Rossie, but that was
a very good pickup. If you did.
Speaker 4 (02:04:43):
I did not, because we cannot legally gabble here in Texas.
Speaker 2 (02:04:46):
That's why I said, well you can't. I can't do
it any of the fifty states. That's fine, all right, One, O, two,
Let's get the final hour of the Matt Thomas Show
at Ross started. Next is the Matt Thomas Show with
Ross is its coach. They owe him forty three millie.
(02:05:10):
Kentucky fires Mark Stoops, they owe him thirty seven million dollars.
Speaker 4 (02:05:15):
Yeah what, okay, come on, Kentucky, come on.
Speaker 2 (02:05:21):
Here's the thing. They owe him thirty seven million dollars.
They had to give it to him with him sixty days. Okay,
So let's let's pretend we're in a world where you
get fired from your job, you get the contract paid
out ROSSI, and you've got sixty days a kind of
guy a check for thirty seven million dollars. Mm. We're
(02:05:43):
in the wrong business. We are in the wrong business.
Speaker 4 (02:05:47):
Goodness, gracious, what what what is the I understand getting
upset at like LSU And come on, Kentucky, let's see
how bad was the season?
Speaker 6 (02:05:59):
Oh oh.
Speaker 2 (02:06:02):
Oh five and seven? That fine, It would have been
six and six if you'd have beaten Texas.
Speaker 4 (02:06:07):
They should have that's another counter argument. By the way,
everybody's like, not everybody, but a lot of Longhorn fans.
Speaker 2 (02:06:13):
They won three games.
Speaker 4 (02:06:15):
Yeah, okay, you should have lost against probably well Kentucky
whatever it was close to should have lost, and you
should have lost to Mississippi State.
Speaker 2 (02:06:23):
It is what it is. It is what it is.
I got Longhorn fans dming me all this.
Speaker 4 (02:06:29):
Coach Sark says that we're not gonna play big games anymore. Okay,
take your ball and go home, go and cry. You
don't want to do you want to play the big games?
That's fine. It's a bunch of whiners, bunge all. You know,
college fans, every college fan base a bunch of whiners.
Speaker 2 (02:06:43):
Do you respond to those dms like you'd respond to
the other dms you told me about.
Speaker 3 (02:06:47):
Yeah, I responded to everybody who reaped.
Speaker 4 (02:06:49):
That's why my dms are open at sports RVs so
I can talk to fans and interact with people and
stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (02:06:54):
Mine are open too, So if you want to, if
you ever need to send me a DM, you can
do that at sports MT. By the way, shout out
to Twitter. They are getting rid of these dormant slash
spam accounts, so we're getting a truer sense of how
many people really follow people.
Speaker 4 (02:07:12):
So oh, oh but nothing. I think I'm about to
get lectured by whom. Look, well you'll see when you
just put on hold.
Speaker 3 (02:07:27):
For a lecture.
Speaker 2 (02:07:30):
Are you getting a lecture?
Speaker 23 (02:07:31):
No?
Speaker 2 (02:07:31):
No, not you all right? Ten minutes. Oh, here we go. Here,
you know what we gotta do it.
Speaker 3 (02:07:39):
I had a great time at the game. Lookome Horns.
Speaker 2 (02:07:42):
Did you did you see a Longhorns got at the game?
Speaker 4 (02:07:44):
I don't think so.
Speaker 2 (02:07:46):
Was he at the game?
Speaker 4 (02:07:47):
I think so, That's what tex Hobo girl was asking.
Apparently my pictures are near here, so I don't know
where he was.
Speaker 2 (02:07:55):
All right, it says Ross awful comment about you.
Speaker 6 (02:08:00):
Let's go.
Speaker 2 (02:08:01):
I rarely ever say this in the history of this
radio show. But Longhorn, Scott, take as much time as
you need.
Speaker 7 (02:08:07):
I mean, it's like it's I don't know, I don't
understand how this happens because Ross seems like you know,
a great guy. But god, dude, your taste on Texas
are always just terrible, like the idea like just now,
I mean, I haven't even been listening very long for
starters the game of Well, they should have lost hold on.
They did not lose to Kentucky. They did not lose
to Mississippi State if you want to go there. A
(02:08:30):
and M should have lost to Southern South Carolina. AM
should have lost to Arkansas. They didn't they beat them?
Were they close?
Speaker 11 (02:08:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (02:08:39):
AM barely beat South Carolina. It's part of their eleven
and one record. No one's saying that about them. Look
the idea, but here's the bottom line, you know you.
I'm not a big fan of this idea of like, well,
well then we just won't schedule big games. I mean, like,
I got no problem with the idea of saying no, no,
we're gonna stick to it and we're gonna keep playing
these big games. Okay, that's however, I also have no
(02:09:02):
problem whatsoever with a school saying, hey, look, the reward
is less than the risk. At the end of the day,
you get punished. You there's more to lose if you
lose that game than there is to win if you
win it. So if a win is a win, then goot,
schedule a team wherein your chances are much higher of
(02:09:22):
getting the win. That way, you get the win, and
then you have fewer l's and so thus you wind
up in the playoff. I mean, it's really basic stuff.
They're doing this in a way that is the whole
sport is about. It's just it's fund of spiraling with
an aisle and automatic train. But like Ross, I mean,
you claim to be a longhorn.
Speaker 4 (02:09:43):
Oh Okay, hold on, I'm putting you on hold for
one second. Longhorn Scott we were talking about. I wasn't ill.
First of all, I wasn't making an overall point like, hey,
the Longhorns resume is weak because they almost lost to
Mississippi State. I'm talking about when we're getting into the
details of the resume and where it is, when there
are p people who are being homers, who are saying, yeah,
(02:10:03):
but look at this, and look at this and look
at this. It's like, okay, but it's not like the
Texas is some unstoppable force and they have this this
diamond resume teflon resume to where they there you can't
poke holes into it. That's what I was saying that
as an a counter argument too, So I was not
specifically pointing up and saying, oh, you know what, Texas
(02:10:23):
didn't have a really good season because they almost they
almost lost to Mississippi State. I'm saying, if you want
to be on the other side to where people are
acting like this resume is with the top three ten,
top ten wins, it's not that great of a resume.
It really isn't. Because they did lose the three games
they lost to a four and eight Florida team, they
(02:10:44):
could have very well lost to Kentucky or Mississippi State.
So to say that they are undeniably one of the
best teams in college football and there's no doubt about
it that they should be in I'm disagreeing with that.
Speaker 3 (02:10:55):
That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 7 (02:10:59):
I guess my thought would be this, if you get
truly analytical about it. I mean, I'm not gonna lose
any sleep I mean, we beat Arkansas OU and of
course Little Brother again like finaling me, like, if we
wind up as a ten and three team and that's
our one of our bad years, you know, I've seen
much worse. But I will say this, if you're truly
going to be thoughtful, which they alleged to be thoughtful
(02:11:20):
about all this, and you start to look at the numbers,
and there you start to go, know, like there is
a legitimate, strong argument for a nine to three Texas
to get in over several of the ten and two teams.
I'm not going to lose any sleep over and I'm
not going to die on the hill. But at the
end of the day, within the context of people who
are saying that UT is a lock cinch. That's because
(02:11:43):
in part of the wins, I mean, you go on
the road, you win games and either one of them
or you lose them, and they won most of them,
and three against the top ten. Only one other team ever,
not just recently, ever in regular season has done that.
It was LSU among what was one of the greatest
teams ever allegedly when they were good. But that's if
(02:12:06):
that was so easy to do that, why don't people
do it more often? It's not irrelevant anyway, Come on, Ross.
Speaker 4 (02:12:11):
Better, Yeah, do better, bro, They're one of the twelve
best teams in the country if we're boiling. If we're
boiling it down to that, are the Longhorns one of
the best twelve teams in the country? Should they be
in Yes? Are there holes in the resume?
Speaker 6 (02:12:25):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (02:12:26):
So I mean I don't think we're as split a
far as as Longhorns Scott is thinking. And as I said,
I was just pointing pulling that up as a side
point as a counter argument to people who act like
Texas has this not perfect resume, but no doubt about
it should be in resume.
Speaker 3 (02:12:41):
That's just not the case.
Speaker 2 (02:12:44):
No, I don't and clearly the college football committee said
as much. I mean, you guys took the pretty far
drop it's gonna and you said you got no favorite
from anybody over the weekend too.
Speaker 3 (02:12:55):
No favorites from anybody, And it is it is a fact.
Speaker 4 (02:12:58):
If in my mind, if if they were ten and
two with a victory over whoever Rice instead of a
loss to Ohio State, they would be in. But I
still want them to play the big games. Big games
are fun, they matter, and especially for season ticket holders,
you get these big these big name teams coming in
next year. The home schedule for the Longhorns outside of
(02:13:21):
the Ohio State game is not good.
Speaker 2 (02:13:23):
Like it mattered.
Speaker 4 (02:13:24):
It should matter to for the prestige. It should matter
for Daring to be great, and it should matter. It
should matter for your U, for your season ticket holders
to play these big games.
Speaker 2 (02:13:33):
If I'm Texas, I schedule you conon Wake Forest, Let's
go one that's weak because you that that's just weak.
You're supposed to know. I know, but I want to
be in the playoff. And if I and if I
got the rule, look Indiana, you think I mean Indiana
and said we're not schedule anybody, Are you kidding me?
We got big ten schedule in.
Speaker 4 (02:13:50):
Twenty twenty three, Texas would not have made the playoff.
If they did not go on the road and beat Alabama,
they wouldn't have made it.
Speaker 2 (02:13:57):
So it did matter that you know what your wraps are, right,
But more times than not, I mean, are we gonna
We're gonna look back at this well, Long Horn fans
ten years from now, go, well, if we didn't scheduled,
not schedule Ohio State, we'd have been in it. You
know that's gonna have.
Speaker 4 (02:14:09):
Pete Florida, Florida. I got a crazy idea, beat Ohio State?
Are they I got another crazy idea, Pete Georgia. Who
win the games?
Speaker 3 (02:14:20):
Win the games?
Speaker 2 (02:14:21):
No wonder, Long, no wonder. Long Horn fans hate you, all.
Speaker 4 (02:14:23):
Right, because I'm reasonable. I Longhorn Scott is a massive homer,
and that's fine. That's been his shtick for a decade
plus on these airwaves, and he's always gonna see something
with orange tin and glasses. I while I am a homer,
I can also be reasonable and I can see the
other sides of things, and so if that makes me bad,
a bad fan or whatever, that's fine.
Speaker 3 (02:14:43):
But as I said, I'm on group text with other people.
Speaker 4 (02:14:46):
We're talking about this, and everybody's on the same page
with me that hey, it's not some great travesty if
they don't get in. But they are one, they are
one of the twelve best teams in football. They are
they should be in by that met by that measure, yep.
Speaker 2 (02:14:59):
But there are two automatic that will kick you out.
Probably all right, one team, let's get a short time
out here. Seven one three two two five seven Honey
Lane kiffn believe it or not today sports Harv gotta
be right sure. Seven one three two one two five
seven ninety. Congratulations to Connor Wigler, the Big twelve Offensive
(02:15:22):
Player of the Week. Cougar is getting win number nine
against the Baylor Bears. That is your update on the Cougars,
presented to you by the Joint Chiropractor, the official Chiropractor
of the Houston Cougar's. Cougars will not know who they're
going to be playing in a bowl game because that
will be announced until one week from today. Actually, probably
a lot of that come out on Sunday after the
(02:15:43):
championship games. As far as what we're hearing, I mean
A and M's gonna have a home game, I mean
I know the Aams piss lost and they're you know,
the little Brothers thing, but it's gonna be fun to
have a game of Kyle Field. I mean, that's why
I think, Rossie, if I could reinvent this college football
wheel to have the first two rounds at a home stadium,
(02:16:05):
I just think makes such a difference. But that's never
gonna happen. In fact, I think we may see a
trend warming. We may even lose those first round games
to neutral sites because of the Money's gonna be too good.
Speaker 4 (02:16:14):
Big money sponsors. It's all about the money, money, money.
That's why there's twelve teams in the playoffs. That's why
they're probably gonna fight for sixteen.
Speaker 2 (02:16:21):
Now. So if we get to sixteen, are we gonna
finally end this? Like, are we gonna have a serious
argument about seventeen or eighteen not getting in? Yep? Absolutely right,
don't guess you're right. I was hoping that maybe sixteen
would be the definitive spot.
Speaker 4 (02:16:35):
Yeah, I mean, nobody's got a super crazy argument. I
mean outside of twelve, Like I said, you can poke
holes in Texas's resume, which is all I was saying.
So you get all get our panties in a bunch.
Speaker 2 (02:16:47):
Up selling fans dot net. Here we go fight over there.
Speaker 4 (02:16:50):
Want I get Cruise fied on every website these days,
And that's fine because I'm.
Speaker 2 (02:16:53):
Just speaking of money. That means you got something to say.
Speaker 3 (02:16:56):
Jesus.
Speaker 4 (02:17:00):
Let's see right now. Sixteen would be well Virginia, well
they're ten and two. Yeah, Virginia probably thinks they have
an argument.
Speaker 2 (02:17:07):
I guess m b Y you would definitely. I'm here
in Salt Lake and people here like we gotta get BYU,
and like, brah, you only hear goodting it as you
beat Texas Tech. You beat Texas Tech Saturday, You're going
to the game. You're gonna be in the tournament, and
then they would both be in.
Speaker 4 (02:17:21):
That'd be really kickout fringe teams.
Speaker 2 (02:17:24):
Which will kick out a team that you didn't then
have two big twelve teams in.
Speaker 4 (02:17:28):
Hmmm.
Speaker 2 (02:17:31):
Look, I don't have a fight in this Notre Dame
world of ours. But Notre Dame just gets to play
their schedule and doesn't have to worry about a conference late.
Speaker 4 (02:17:37):
I mean, yeah, they schedule fairly tough in theory.
Speaker 2 (02:17:42):
I mean, well, they have to play at least four
accs I get that, but it can they can they
kind of choose who they are. Accs are they they
don't get them handed to them. I don't think. Uh yeah,
is that true. I don't know how that works. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:17:56):
Yeah, they're two toughest games they lost. You know who's
their best when I mean USC, USC is top twenty
Yeah yeah, I mean and there is should be a
tough schedule Miami in and m They lost to Arkansas
Purdue USC maybe not no, this, you know what. The
schedule sucks. I'll shut up.
Speaker 2 (02:18:19):
They always play Navy, they always play USC. Although the
USC Notre Dame series I think has been needs to
be scheduled.
Speaker 4 (02:18:25):
I think in the future. Yeah, in USC seventeenth. This
is the the beauty of college football is you can
poke hole. Unless you're like undefeated and won every game
by twenty one, you can poke the hole in anybody's resume.
Speaker 2 (02:18:40):
Just about. By the way, what a like.
Speaker 4 (02:18:43):
Georgia lost, Obama almost lost a terrible Tennessee almost loss
of Florida.
Speaker 3 (02:18:48):
Who's bad?
Speaker 4 (02:18:48):
Like you can just you can poke a hole in
just about everything.
Speaker 2 (02:18:51):
Almost did this had to go over to Georgia Tech. Yeah, yeah,
but how about a non SEC how about a originally
a sexy higher than turned out to be just a
so mid higher as Lincoln Riley at USC.
Speaker 4 (02:19:04):
He's getting a he's getting paid to pay a lot
of money.
Speaker 2 (02:19:08):
And they've got money too. I mean, man, they do.
Speaker 4 (02:19:12):
Yeah, whatever happened is this is funny to me. Everybody's
a hot name until they're not.
Speaker 2 (02:19:20):
I think that. I think the storyline of college athletics,
at least for this year, for me, has been the
amount of coaches have been fired and the amount of
money being paid out. Franklin, Kelly uh Norvell, No, I
mean who is at Florida, Billy Napier. I mean we're
(02:19:44):
seeing crazy amounts of money being paid out. It's almost
like sign the deal and then mail in your career.
Because look if look at your frank I mean not
the James Franklin, Jimbo, look at James Franklin. I mean
he wouldn't got another job. I get that, but he
was gonna get a lot of money for leaving Penn State,
for not finishing the job, and now he's got a
(02:20:04):
pretty good chunk of change go to Virginia Tech.
Speaker 4 (02:20:06):
I mean not a bad generally, these guys who rise
to the top are like they're workaholics.
Speaker 2 (02:20:11):
They are.
Speaker 4 (02:20:11):
You gotta be a workaholic to rise to the level
of a top tier college coach.
Speaker 2 (02:20:19):
That's true. That's right. Let's go to quick time out.
kJ and Brian will get to both of you coming
back in a minute seven one three, two, one two
five seven ninety seven one three two, one two five
seven nine zero. All right, let's get right back at
a lot of folks will want to say hello. Let's
talk first to kJ on seven at one thirty three high, kJ.
Speaker 5 (02:20:43):
Hey, what's that? Brothers from another man long.
Speaker 6 (02:20:45):
Top damn fantager show.
Speaker 5 (02:20:48):
I'm gonna start off with a two puck questions and
I gotta say this to me real quick. My two
fuck question is first fun is do you guys have
a time tame? We'll have to win? Tank Ell is
expected back? Part one and part two is when things
Lelle is healthy? Is that wide receiver rooms It's already
looking pretty good right now. It's gonna look even better
(02:21:10):
when he's available.
Speaker 23 (02:21:12):
So what do you think?
Speaker 5 (02:21:13):
One thing? Lelle is healthy and on the field man out.
I love the way Xaviril Hudcherson stepped up this year.
I'm not really impressible. We've gotten out of Christian Kirk,
but other than him, the other guys are looking real good.
I'm imagined that somebody's got looking in.
Speaker 7 (02:21:30):
I take.
Speaker 13 (02:21:33):
I looking.
Speaker 5 (02:21:34):
When I came out of high school and Kim Helpton
came and recruited me football. I'm pretty sure you remember
out Kim, don't you, Matt.
Speaker 2 (02:21:42):
Of course.
Speaker 5 (02:21:45):
He had all about him, that was a genuineness about him.
When I'm talking about me plans.
Speaker 2 (02:21:51):
I didn't stay at U of H.
Speaker 5 (02:21:53):
But it wasn't from me, because Kim as the president.
That is the impression that he gave me. If I
want to recruit I'm out of high school right now.
It's nothing in me that would want to have Lane
Kidden sitting on my parents' causel I remember in the
documentary about the Fab five with Chris Webbers said that
he came into an arena and he saw everybody wearing
(02:22:14):
number for Michigan basketball jersey, but he only had ten
dollars and three rom and noodles to his name.
Speaker 20 (02:22:20):
This is why I'm a fan of the n I L.
Speaker 5 (02:22:23):
The n C double a upposite N I L came
in to play, but Rushall eighteen nineteen year old kids
accountable something they weren't holding from men accountable for this
Lane Kiffer situation is despicable. He is ridiculous, and this
is all the more reason why I think we're that
much closer to not just regulating N I L, but
also regulating the ends of lotom what coaches care the
(02:22:47):
kids do when they signed quote unquote the contract. Because
Lynn's Lane Tiffin has given a black eye not just
to coaches in Jillo, but the n C double A
as the coach alack their love when it comes to regulating.
He's the standards they hold these toches to that they run,
not n I M holding these kids too. I don't
(02:23:08):
want to help what you guys gotta says.
Speaker 2 (02:23:10):
So thank you kJ to answer your first point really quickly,
Tank Dell, I don't think would be. I mean, I
can tell you Frank won't be playing this season. Uh,
he'll have a chance obviously come back and play next season.
Christian Kirk would be the eye man out Rossie. I look,
I love me some Tank Dell go Koug's but man, uh,
(02:23:31):
two injuries two straight seasons, season plus ending injury, I
don't see him being a long term NFL player. I
just think the body just isn't big enough to go.
And I know they've been freakish injuries, but injuries are
still injuries. Yeah, I'm not.
Speaker 3 (02:23:46):
Keeping my hopes up.
Speaker 4 (02:23:47):
I don't know when he's supposed to be back, especially,
I mean, just so much of his game was predicated
on his quickness and speed obviously, not size and strength.
Speaker 2 (02:23:57):
Uh And by the way, to the second point where
quick and ross you and green screen, there's no There'll
be no regulation of college athletics. Nobody wants to step
in that. Nobody wants to. Nobody wants that responsibility because
the thought of what Alabama and Michigan and Penn State
and Florida want are nothing close to what Boise State
UNLV And if of that matter, by you and Houston
(02:24:19):
won not gonna happen. We're never gonna get one, no.
Speaker 4 (02:24:22):
Chance that that's fair to say, unless it literally would
have to be turned to professional sports.
Speaker 3 (02:24:30):
That's that's then. I don't know if that, if, and
when that'll ever happen.
Speaker 4 (02:24:34):
That's what it is has been because they keep losing
all these things, keep losing all these court cases, because
they have basically been running like a professional outfit for decades.
Speaker 2 (02:24:45):
Just give a w two let's go. I mean it is.
I mean, you're representing our school and that's cool and everything,
but you're not going to class and you're run up,
gonna be at three different schools by the time you graduate,
or if you even bother graduating. It's it's a minor league.
And I've given up on the the genuine I mean,
there's Saturday pageantry, but that's as far as it goes.
Monday through Friday and Sunday we talked about everything else.
(02:25:06):
Saturday is about the games.
Speaker 4 (02:25:07):
Yeah, I don't care. I didn't care about any I
all know that.
Speaker 2 (02:25:09):
Well.
Speaker 4 (02:25:10):
I'm tailgating and screaming my lungs out at the games
because still a good time.
Speaker 2 (02:25:14):
It was a good time. Yeah, Saturday is the day
we reroot the games. Everything else. We just bemoaned the industry.
Scott's with him at one thirty eight. Hih, Scott, what's
going on? Guys?
Speaker 25 (02:25:26):
So I almost feel embarrassed at this point. A couple
of weeks ago, I called in pretty ridiculously emotional about
the land Kisson situation. I don't know if you'll remember,
but I'm an old miss fan. I was sleep deprived
that morning when I called in. He had me so
stressed out. I woke up that morning like three o'clock
just you know, way overreacting to the whole situation. I
(02:25:47):
remember hanging up the phone like God, I would kind
of act like a child on live radio. So that
wasn't my favorite moment that I did. But I can
speak as an old miss fan now that this sedusion,
it is somewhat of a relief. I mean, yeah, we
wanted him to stay for a while, but we kind
of accepted the fact that he was leaving about a
(02:26:07):
week week and a half ago. I mean, really, if
you look back on it, as soon as he didn't
sign the contract extension, of what my Kurch Signetti did
and all that stuff in the middle of the season,
it was pretty obvious what he wanted to do. It's
easy for me to say this now. I know I
don't get much credibility for saying this now, but he's
a bad guy. He is narcissistic. He's very enjoyable to
listen to to a press conference. He's obviously a good coach,
(02:26:30):
he's a good recruiter, but even he really is not
for me. I can't do it anymore. But for y'all,
he's worth a follow on Instagram. I mean, he is
one of the biggest narcissists you could ever lay your
hands on. And I'm sure it's not just him that's
narcissistic in the head coaching world in college football. But
what I will say is he's the only one out
(02:26:52):
of the major schools that didn't sign an extension in state.
If you look at signetty, Like I mentioned, the Missouri
coach Dan Lanning wasn't going anywhere. He has always been
in it for how it's a reflection on himself, and
he thinks LS is a great brand. And I'm sure
a lot of LSU friends what I've told him. It
(02:27:13):
may not be this year, it may not be next year,
and there may be some success before this happens. But
one day you are going to hate him just as
much as I hate him, and I can promise you
that will happen. The other thing I wanted to say
really quick, I'm totally unrelated, but I wanted to cash
this in before maybe the Chiefs towards the Texans at
some point. I had given a gut feeling before the
(02:27:33):
season that this Texans defense may be would be the
best unit in the history of the franchise, and I
think that's pretty clear in a way of becoming the
case at this point that they're the best overall side
of the ball for any year we've ever had. So
I wanted to cash that one in. But it's going
to talk to you guys.
Speaker 2 (02:27:51):
Thanks, thank you very much, Scott. Do we feel your pain?
Speaker 23 (02:27:54):
No?
Speaker 2 (02:27:54):
I mean I can't. Please tell me, lsu fans. And
where is Gordy? By the way, is he even around?
Speaker 6 (02:28:00):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (02:28:00):
He is around.
Speaker 3 (02:28:02):
What do you need?
Speaker 2 (02:28:03):
He's not brat. I mean, i'might. We don't time to
get him in here, but I mean he ain't coming around.
He knows what he's hiring, right, He can't be that blind,
right blond? Oh no, you you've hired a snake. You
know that now he'll win you football games.
Speaker 9 (02:28:20):
Good for you.
Speaker 2 (02:28:21):
But oh god, I want to go back and look
to some old locked the nancyc shows and see how
your take was on old link Kevin about say six
months ago.
Speaker 26 (02:28:32):
What what if Matt if ESPN called tomorrow and said
we want to hire you as a play by play guy,
you could go and we would understand it's a better job.
Speaker 2 (02:28:41):
Yeah, I'm okay with Yeah, I'm not I'm not again,
I'm not begrudging the job. But just know what you're hiring.
That's all I'm saying.
Speaker 27 (02:28:47):
So, why is he a snake because he left for
a better job.
Speaker 2 (02:28:50):
No, because he was trying to he was trying to
be politically correct and trying to weistil is going to
keep in the old miss situation.
Speaker 27 (02:28:56):
And he wanted to finish his season with his players.
Speaker 6 (02:28:59):
Crazy.
Speaker 2 (02:29:01):
No, you don't get to do that. You don't get
to finish your season. That's not crazy. That's take the
shut out of there.
Speaker 26 (02:29:07):
They will not win a championship because they fired their
guy or got rid of him.
Speaker 2 (02:29:11):
No, that's not true. They weren't going to win a championship.
They weren't even a favorite to win the championship even
if he was there.
Speaker 27 (02:29:16):
Oh so you're saying, but he'll have a better chance
at LSU. I agree, that's why he left.
Speaker 2 (02:29:20):
Yeah. Yeah, but he's just a douche and he's a
good football coach. I don't because you come on, you
know what a douche is you? You got one of
the room with you there right now, I mean, come on,
I was just rude. I want you to say, with
a straight face, I think Lane Kiffin's a good, stand
up guy. Say it right now on the radio.
Speaker 27 (02:29:42):
I think he's a hell of a football coach. He's
gonna win a lot of games.
Speaker 2 (02:29:45):
I didn't ask you to say that because I agree
with you on that say. I want you to repeat,
Lane Kiffen looks like a stand up, good guy. Can't
wait for him to to come into the Baton Rouge
community and be a huge part of our success for
the long, long term, ten to fifteen years. Go ahead,
we'll be here.
Speaker 26 (02:30:01):
Four or five and we'll see if he wins a championship.
By the way, Alabama, go ask anybody around there. They
thought Saban was a total ass cloud like nobody liked
dealing with him.
Speaker 2 (02:30:12):
But he won. All right. I know what I'm doing
the flight home tonight. I'm going to look up some
old lockedown sec and see what find me some gordyisms.
Speaker 26 (02:30:22):
If Willie Fritz is a nice guy and if he
wins at the highest level, that's great. But if Willy
Fritz wins a jerk and went at a high level,
you don't how many people would care. I wouldn't care
take you a bang stiff playoffs?
Speaker 2 (02:30:32):
N does that you need to listen to the show?
Attend to two. We said, jerks win. I'd rather be
jerk than a nice guy. I'd rather be jerk to
win and a nice guy who loses. I'm right there
with you on that. But I mean, if people want
to call in and say that they don't think he's
a good guy, then that shouldn't be debate. I don't
think it's debatable. The good guys don't have to be
(02:30:54):
good guys. When you're a good football coaches, there'd be
two separate things. Thankfully you Hent has both. Thanks Gordy,
we'll see you. Uh, we are out of time. We
gotta get play believe it or not. Next So all
of you that are on hold, that includes Scott Brian.
