Is The Matt Thomas Show with Ross ted.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
On one in h Town.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
Good morning, and welcome to a Tuesday edition of The
Matt Thomas Show with Ross here on Sports Talk seven Honi.
We are back in studio. I have to hanging out
with our good friend Kevin for a little bit yesterday. Uh.
And the training camp for the Rockets officially gets underweight today.
They'll have their first preseason game, I believe next Tuesday
(00:34):
against the I believe I hated Atlanta Hawks. Can I
say I believe many more times than the first thirty
seconds of the show. It feels like it's a good
segue that I'm gonna be. I'm fairly certain, immacurate about
all these things. Do you believe believe? Believe You're falling
in love?
Speaker 4 (00:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Yeah, I also believe from Share as well. Oh I
hate that song? Oh I like it. I like anything Share.
I'm team here. I thought, oh, you, of all people
would hate the auto tune, it is that. I mean,
it's not one of my favorites. But I still can
listen to it. You still jam it? Is it? On
my phone?
Speaker 4 (01:05):
No?
Speaker 3 (01:05):
It is?
Speaker 1 (01:09):
You know.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
I I'm You're sleeping dog alive. That's that's fine. Only
it only took a minute for you to criticize something
about my life. Whether we size, I didn't say anything,
you were quiet, I said, I let it go. You wanted,
you wanted to say need points for personal growth? I
let it go. All right, that's true, that's true. I
hope you guys are a good mood today. It is
(01:30):
a little surreal. The Major League Baseball playoffs start today.
The Astros should be playing in two hours. We would
be an on deck mode at eleven o'clock today, but
we will not be because the Astros went three and
three in that last trip. When I thought I was
team five and one, Yeah, well you were team five
and one. They were team they were literally three. Unfortunately,
(01:51):
it got close. I mean they literally tied the Tigers. Yeah,
one game away. They beat all the really really good teams,
the somewhat good teams. They couldn't win the season series. Yeah,
they had no tiebreakers against basically anybody. Yeah, that was
that was a huge problem, and they knew that going in.
But you know, they could have took taken care of
their own business. I mean, think about this rossy three
(02:11):
nothing Friday night. If they hold on to that we're
talking about a twelve o five first pitch.
Speaker 4 (02:20):
That would have been nice.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
That would have been real nice for us here on
Sports Talk seven ninety because we're big baseball fans. That's
exactly right. Instead, Joe A spot it and uh Dano,
it's like an interview Tuesday. Instead it's great. I mean
it's not fantastic. It's not good. It's not good. Uh
we who are we getting down there? Samam Clinton down
(02:43):
there getting sound? Uh no, oh, I didn't mean to pregnant. Pause.
I was a little stunned by Uh. That was that
was quite Uh. That was the eye roll. You gave
me the century right there. But then Adams a little
bit of a get there too, would leave it. Six. Guy.
We love him and everything, but you can be catching
(03:04):
in the overtime checks. Put that way. You know, I
set that up. That's my fault. You did set it up.
That's my fault. All right, that's fine. We love you,
so tease because we care, and we care because we tease. Yeah,
I mean, look, I uh my philosophy is I tease
a lot. I have to take it. I do not
accept teasing from people that do not take it. Well, Okay,
(03:27):
So that's just my you know, if you if you again,
if I dish it out, I have to take it.
But I do not take it from people who can't
handle mean dishing it out. So an Adam can't clan.
So it's it's good. We're we're all big family members,
all right. So we got baseball today. We've got Dana
Brown and Joe spot Us speaking at eleven o'clock. It
is interesting, and again it's just all conjecture. Bob Nightingale
(03:52):
kind of runs hot and cold. Sometimes he's really on
top of things, and sometimes he's couldn't be further from
the truth. Yeah. Mostly his hit his hit rates back up. Well,
I'll say this, he's he was batting about let's say,
if we're using batting percentages, he was batting two forty
six for a long time. Uh, he's batting about two
(04:13):
seventy five.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
Doine.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
His ops is cleared eight hundred, so he's considered good now.
He missed one recently though. I think it was Esak
Pratus out for the season, that's right, and that dropped.
That was that was aer for eleven streak. I mean
that's what everybody thought. That's probably the intel he got
was that he ain't gonna make it back, and he
did just come back in DH for a handful of games,
and frankly, Esach was about forty percent of what he
(04:34):
normally was. But I give him credit for coming back
because nobody, I mean, we all thought it was surgery
and goodbye. See in twenty twenty six. So stick with baseball,
We'll say he had some hard hit contact on that,
but it found a glove. Yeah, Uh, he did throw
out there, and I don't think he's the only one
who did it that. Uh, it's not a foregone conclusion
that Joe a spot of stays. I would have to not,
(04:56):
without a shadow of doubt, disagree because you're it's it's
only one person that counts. It's the owner, it's the astros,
it's it's what he wants to do. But I don't
think they would put Joe a Spota on a podium
on a two days after the season if they were
ready to make a change. I don't think so either.
I think, uh, you can never say never in this well,
(05:17):
I'm not going to say never in this situation. But
it seems like he is going to be back. Yeah,
everybody else seems like Dana's brack back, Joe is back.
Everyone else We'll see. Yeah, now things are moving, coaches
are safe. Thanks are moving very fluid around baseball. Bob
Melvin out in San Francisco, Rock calledbu Deli out of Minnesota.
Bruce like Bruce Bochi leaving the Rangers. Yes, and all
(05:43):
the Bay Area folks are like, well, come on back,
you're really going to retire. You retire with the team
to help you. Wonder you got a World Series with
Let that man rest. Maybe it's his decision. How old
is he got to be early to mid seventies. He's seventies.
He is, Oh wait, I thought he was older than that.
He's seventy. That's it. That's what I said. It significant
(06:05):
when he goes to get somebody from the from the dugout,
when he comes to get a picture, it's like you
can go and go to the bathroom, get a couple
of dogs, and then come back and then the picture's
not even warming up yet. Yeah. I mean, you're they're
supposed to Major League Baseball. You're supposed to walk briskly.
But I believe the rule is once you hit sixty five,
they don't put they don't adhere to those rules. Yeah,
he waddles slowly. Yeah. Uh so there's rumors of that.
(06:28):
Now apparently he has been offered a job within the organization,
but that could be just the Rangers. Okay, yeah, Now
one of the things the Detroit Tigers are in contract negotiations.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
With a J.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Hinch. Oh really yeah? Now does Detroit Tiger fan feel
about that? Well, I mean they're in, they made it,
but if they lose too straight, probably going to be
a fairly quick get aj out of there. So the
question would be, is that something in the back of
Jim Crane's mind. We don't know. I don't have Jim
(06:59):
Crane on speed. Jim and I have not spoken personally
in a couple of years, and that's fine, and these
avoid me or anything, but I just don't He wouldn't
give me the sense anyway. But you know, it's it's
rumor time, Ross and it's hey, do the stars align.
We've seen, you know, Alex cor get his job back
in Boston. We've seen guys that have been gone away
(07:20):
going back to previous teams, Bruce Bochie again, rumors about
him going maybe back to San Francisco. These things can happen,
So I would say never, say never. But again, if
if you were to, I mean, if we were on
odds about Joe not being retained and being replaced by AJ,
that'd be probably at two hundred and fifty to one
(07:42):
something like that, maybe a little lower, slightly lower, Okay, okay, semantics,
so we'd have So those two guys, Joe and Dana
will speak today at eleven o'clock and then we'll have
got feelings at eleven thirty today we'll have the news noon.
We were supposed to have Joe spot at twelve thirty
(08:03):
to day, but even if it was they were playing,
we would have a twelve thirty because they'd be like
in the second inning, So that would be hard. That
should be really nice. You can call us from the
dugout interrupting the broadcast of this playoff game to do
a five minute interview with Joe in the middle of
the game. Joe, that was way out of the zone
your thoughts. But I will screaming at the umps, but
I'll say this one, you know, and I hate to
go to when I was a growing up card, but
(08:23):
I'll do it. When I was growing up. Managers got
a lotly way you you put together back to back
losing seasons. We're not making the playoffs, and it feels
like everybody's jobs in Major League Baseball are really tenuous.
They really are. There's no room for we're growing, we're building.
It's everywhere, it's every sport. NFL coaches are fired at
(08:48):
a higher rate than ever before. Same thing for college football.
I mean, you've had two college football coaches fired within
like the what the first three weeks of the season,
replaced by one of them by Bobby Petrino, and Pittman's
already been fied. It happened basketball. Remember every time we
go through the coach of the Year list, it's all
dudes that have been fired. Recently, Michael Malone gets fired
(09:08):
before the Nuggets make the playoff and just about to
make the playoffs. Yes, yes, it's everywhere. It's now now now,
it's no time to rebuild. It's let's get this done
and let's figure this thing out. And some of it
is warranted to me because of the opening of free
agency periods. Now you have transfer portals, you have you know,
(09:28):
guys building teams that way to where in the olden
days you couldn't your team was your team for like
five years. Yep. So yeah, you you expect faster turnarounds.
It's just natural and it's happening everywhere. And it's the
I don't know what do you call it, what do
they call it? Micro wave generation? I don't know exactly
what the phrase people use. You know what it is.
It's also it's also the money. These nobody's making cheap
(09:52):
money being in charge. I mean, we got guys. You know,
either you are winning right away and getting extensions right
away and making large money because you don't want other
teams coming after you and poaching your coach, or you
are out because you are making so much money. I'll
give you a great example. The New York Jets last
night lost to the Miami Dolphins. The Jets are now
going to go to I believe London to play the Broncos.
(10:14):
They're probably gonna lose that game. Then you got the
New York Jets awful week, and then you I mean,
the Jets go to Cincinnati or Zach I mean, is
Aaron Glenn gonna potentially be won and done in New
York name it's legend. I hope he gets a little
more grace in that the Jets. But I'll give you
an example. I mean, before the how many Dodgers fans
(10:37):
have wanted Dave Roberts out over and over and over
again the last year, and they win the World Series.
Jerry Depoto, the general manager of the Mariners. Mariners fans
hate him and think he wants to be out. He's
built a great team given the time. He's built a
great team over there in Seattle, because I don't think
the ownership in Seattle, not that I'm intimated the Tails,
(10:57):
but they don't come across the team that spends a
lot of money. No, they don't. They don't spend a
lot of money. And that's why Jerry Depoto's had to
try to figure things out. And he's been able to
make some trades, build up the farm system, and they're
in a good position. I don't know that they're gonna
make the World Series or win the World Series, but
I think they're American League favorites, or they should be.
You know what, selfish, I need them to lose in
the first round again, that'd be great Division Series. They're
(11:19):
just so obnoxious. You already had Mariner's TV guys putting
on the Astros postseason schedule and with a blank card.
Who did that? It was some somebody in Seattle TV
was like, oh, before we get to the Mariners, let's
go ahead and check in on the Astros postseason schedule,
and it's the Astros logo and and then like just
blake basically a blank graphic like come on Mariner's Mariners.
(11:43):
It's funny because I was on Seattle's radio last week
before actually two weeks ago, before the Astro Seattle series,
and they said, all right, tell us truth, what bugs
you about Seattle. I said it wasn't because I said, well,
first of all, you got significantly better the trade deadline,
you got an MVP candidate, and I don't have been
one of those two things. But I said, your fans
think you won like three or four World Series, bro.
(12:06):
You you guys went like one hundred and nine and
fifty something and got dropped in the American League Division
Series a couple of twenty years back or whatever. It
was crazy. Yeah, there four, there are two. There are
sports fan bases that are arrogant but they win. Like
for instance, Red Sox fan is arrogant, Yankee fan is abusive.
I mean they were apparently they were all at the Ryder
(12:27):
Cup this weekend. But they have at least have banners,
they have pennants, They've got World Series history. The Manners
are just like the most nondescript, barely been the playoff,
losing games and out kind of thing. But they act
like they've won four World Series in a row. Are
(12:47):
they still the only franchise? It's never They've never been
to a World Series, right, Yeah, because the Marlins have gone,
the Diamondbacks have gone. From of the newest teams who
has not gone to a World Series, Angels have gone
to the World I think it's just them. Yeah, it's
got to be just them. Yeah, even the Rockies have gone. Yeah,
the Brewers, Padres, Rays, and Rockies have all gone. Mariners
(13:11):
are the only ones that haven't gone. But yet you
feel like they've they've won. They have like nine American
League penet hanging in their fans are obsessed with the Astros,
as you mentioned, were more worried about the Yankees. What's
going on with them and other teams in the American League. Yeah,
Rangers fans, we hate Rangers fans. It's like Mariners. You
what all right? Eleven o'clock, we'll hear from the general
(13:32):
manager and manager of the local nine eleven thirty. We
got gut feelings the news at noon in today's edition
of Believe and I believe, it should be about Bad Bunny,
your halftime act at the Super Bowl. Oh really yeah, okay,
your big bad Bunny guy. Uh. If you said, Matt,
I'll give you five thousand dollars for every Bad Bunny song.
You know you'd be keeping your money. Start saying Spanish words,
(13:52):
you know. Let me put it this way. Here's here's
here's a gut feeling for you. We're going to watch
it and half of us are going to go to
Twitter and say it's the greatest act in the world.
I can't believe how much fun that was. And half
America's go so that thing sucked, Just like with every act.
You cannot put an act at the super Bowl in
twenty twenty five, or it's as closely like we'll do
(14:13):
this today. We need to run through the list of
the previous fifteen or so years and we can stop
when somebody didn't say that guy like not in universal
and nobody loves anybody universally. Prince was probably the last
Prince would be one. It was like twenty almost twenty.
Michael Jackson would have been one. Yeah that was thirty
years ago. But see what I'm saying, there's probably been
the last forty years, five or six acts ago. Okay,
(14:35):
that's that's about his mainstream and as everybody likes. The
weekend was good. Oh everybody loved Shakira and Jennifer Lopez.
It was We liked it for different reasons, but it
was spectacular. I don't know what songs they did, but
I got one for you. Well, we'll get tomorrow. We
came back ten sixteen is a time Matt Ross seven
one three two one two five seven nine zero seven
one three two one two five seven ninety. All right,
(14:59):
so let's go in reverse photo really quick, bad Bunny
this year. Kendrick Lamar last year, and that was fifty
to fifty. That was an Emmy winning performance. By the way,
I'm not arguing with you Usher fifty to fifty, Rihanna
fifty to fifty actually more seventy five twenty five. You
know what I'm saying, Doctor Dre dog on eminem m
Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar for Kendrick great for
(15:23):
him the weekend Weekend, I thought most people like that. Yeah,
you can got some very very poppy Yeah, yeah, I
would say more seventy five twenty five, right, Oh, je
who that's my number one all time Matt. I don't
think Jlos sings very well, but I'm not really worried
about it. When they had the torque off at the end.
Maroon five, uh like that that was crushed. Yeah, justin
(15:46):
Timberlake probably seventy five twenty five on that, Lady Gaga
seventy five twenty five, Coldplay twenty eighty. Yes, tell me
when I'm wrong, Oh, everybody. Katy Perry was kind of
people hated it with the remember the Sharks to fifty
Bruno Mars probably seventy five twenty five, Beyonce one hundred
zero percentage of like Madonna on a hundred percent. Okay
(16:12):
this it wasn't one hundred No, I don't think so.
But I mean still universally more appreciated than under than
not liked, right, yeah, I think so let's go So
let's go to the other order real quick. Let's go
back to what it was back in the early days.
Are you to go to the Black Eyed Peace nineteen
sixty seven the Arizona and Grambling State marching bands. So
who everyone thought that they were going to die on stage,
and that's when they went to the younger acts. Florida
(16:33):
A and M University band Doc severitson back in nineteen seventy
with Lionelhampton, Carrol Channing in the Southern University Band. I
don't know who any of those people are. You know?
Dox Severts was was the band leader for Johnny Carson's
Tonight Show for all those times. Oh of course I
knew that Anita Bryant up with people Southeast Missouri State,
Ella Fitzgerald, Carol Channing, Al Hurt and the US Marine
(16:55):
Corp Drill Team. Okay, I'd get down some Eli Fitzgerald.
I don't know if it's really super nineteen seventy three,
the University of Michigan Marching Band. Andy Williams did it
nineteen Williams nineteen seventy four, Rice Stadium. Judy Mallett was
on the fiddle in nineteen seventy three, which she was
missed Texas. Behind her the University of Texas Marching Longhorn Band. Wow,
(17:21):
that's the show band of the Southwest. For those of
you playing at home, folks, Grambling State in seventy five,
seventy six, up with People. I'm trying to look when
they started to get like real celebrities. Let's take a
look here. I'll put People was very popular from March.
A lot of marching bands. I don't know. I think
I want to say, like an a touring kind of
a theatrical musical kind of thing. The stars didn't come
(17:44):
out until George Burns and Mickey Rooney nineteen eighty seven.
George Burns, Mickey Rooney and Grambling State and the USC
marching band, Chubby Checker and the Rockets. What do you
do with the twist? Three times and go home? I
would do the twist at halftime, and if they were there,
they'd be great. That any other hits that they have?
All right, Elvis, No, it can't be Elvis Presley, Elvis Presco.
(18:07):
That must have been a booking foe. Yeah, yeah, guys,
we got Elvis Presty. No, guys, you got Elvis Presto.
The hell's that new kids on the block an Elvis impersonator?
No way. In nineteen eighty nine, that was the halftime.
That's terrible, nineteen eighty nine, was a hel pers. Okay,
(18:27):
here comes the Stars, New Kids on the Block in
nineteen ninety one. Uh, Gloria Steffon in nineteen ninety two, Oh,
Michael Jackson nineteen ninety three, Clint Black, Tanya Tucker, Travis
Tritt and the Juds in nineteen ninety four. Olympic Figure
Skaters with Gloria Estefan. They got some I they threw
down some ice. I guess pad Le Bell, Teddy Pendergrass, Jones,
(18:51):
Tony Bennett in nineteen ninety five, Diana Ross in ninety six,
The Blues Brothers in ninety seven. Go they had Teddy
Pendergrass out there?
Speaker 2 (18:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (18:58):
Was he in like soap pajama getting everybody to lay
themselves down sweetly? I mean I didn't. Apparently he was
endorsing making love. Yeah yeah, Oh gosh. Boys to Men,
Smokey Robinson, The Temptations in nineteen ninety eight. I'm sho
waiting for like the super heavy hitters, Glorious Stefanie Wonder,
Boys to Men and Smokey Robinson and Martha and the Temptations.
(19:19):
They're heavy hitters. Mattie phil Collins, Christina Aguilar in two
thousand Erol Smith and did sink in two thousand and one,
never getting there and then you so about two thousand
and two people started to really you know, get going
ramp it up? Yeah, there you go. Hey, Pete Diddy
was there? O four oops when jen and Jackson got
our wardrobe malfunction? Who that was?
Speaker 2 (19:43):
That was?
Speaker 3 (19:43):
Jonathan? Turn your microphone off? Your phone off here? When
I was on?
Speaker 4 (19:47):
Then?
Speaker 3 (19:48):
I got you all right? Didn't say anything bad about us?
Under O your breath he's he's textically texting his girl.
Those guys disrespect me so much. I know what they're
doing is horrible. Barry Manilow is not horrible. Will fall
on this sword for that.
Speaker 2 (20:03):
You know what?
Speaker 5 (20:03):
Why did we ever not play this song Space Cowboys?
I just listened to it this morning. Why did we
never play that on air? Barry Manilo Space Cowboys?
Speaker 3 (20:10):
No, it was Barry Marlow. I forgot what. Let me
get it. Who had a song called Space Cowboys? It
was actually a really good songs in sugar Land Space Cowboys.
That's Steve Miller ban right, yes, oh yeah, well yeah
I play that. That was good. What reason would you
bring this up?
Speaker 5 (20:24):
I'm curious, Ashow season's over, and then I was like,
Space Cowboys all summer. We could have played this song
when the Space Cowboys. Ross's up.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
Oh, he was thinking about the show, Matt. He's an
idea man. So what do we Why don't we regroup
on this conversation? Maybe in April twenty twenty six. I
hope you're still here. Let's uh, I mean, we anticipate
you being here unless you get a bit, you know,
a better paying job. But that's you know, it couldn't happen. Impossible, impossible,
he's he's he loves it here so much. Let's talk
to Thomas and Glendale, California. The Matt Thomas Show, Ross Thomas,
(20:55):
good morning.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
Oh yes, the opine on the Astro season right. Uh,
here's my take. You on too many occasions didn't play
smart baseball. In other words, uh, some good teams. Smart
(21:22):
teams can score or run without a hit. A guy
gets on first, he's still second. You know, he's a
situational hitting. He loves them. At third, he scores, and
he's a or fly ball. Okay, I'm in California and
(21:43):
I listened to the Astros all the time, and it
frustrates me because a lot of times it would be
nobody out runners on first and second and they don't score. Now,
you don't have to have a hit to score. So
I heard another a guy alluded to that earlier with
(22:08):
Sean Songfer. But to me, they didn't play smart baseball,
you know, And that was that was my cue during
the whole season. I would listen to a game run
on to be on prist the second and the guy
like the next guy who's.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
Gonna hit a home run?
Speaker 2 (22:28):
You know, and uh, a runner on third base and
he pops out. Well, a smart play would be to bullet.
You know, you got a better chance of putting the
ball down. It's matter making a mistake a running on
third base you can score. So those type of situations
(22:49):
occurred far too many times during the season that added
to losses rather than wins. And that is that, to me,
was the real issue with the Astros not being in
the playoffs this season only a few games. The only
guy that did anything was out. To me, I've seen
(23:11):
him in situations where I mean a shock the announcer,
you know, he he bought it and you know, and
scored a run. Now I thought, wow, that's that's a
smart guy.
Speaker 4 (23:23):
You know, that's my.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
Issue with the with the with the goodes, with the assho.
They didn't play smart baseball. You don't have to hit
a three yard homer to score. The only time they
got runs without, you know, a base hic was somebody
walked with the bases loading. And uh so that's my take.
I want to hear what you think about that.
Speaker 3 (23:51):
HM on Sports Talk seven. Body Ross has tweeted out
umpire Auditors uh analysis of the twenty twenty five baseball
(24:15):
season and umpire Unit is a Twitter account and it
says umpires missed twenty six thousand, five hundred and sixty
seven calls during the twenty twenty five regular season, including
twelve one hundred of them being strikeouts. And then the
video shows the ten worst called strikeouts. Only one, by
the way, Ross, this is a this is a glass
half full. Only one involved the Astros one of the
(24:38):
ten worst calls. That's good, gosh, these are bad. Shout
out last DS. It's completing competence. It is complete in
the uttering competence. And I've tried to defend the umpires
because it's a tough job. It is a tough job.
But man, old, man old, man, it's and again, I honestly,
the box does them no good because it makes a
(25:00):
a bunch of amateur umpires get even crankier. Yes, because
if you go look look, you know what I mean.
I'm a huge YouTube guy, like looking at old games
and stuff that just it's nostalgic for me. There are
a lot of calls at nineteen ninety one that were missed. Absolutely,
you didn't feel nearly as bad because I want to
box daring right at you. The data shows the umpires
are getting better and better and better. Yeah, it's just
(25:20):
the box hurts. Yes, but what if you could get
every single one right and they're installing the technology to
do it? Yeah, well, I mean russ I would. Can
I just tell you this is someone that you have
been pushing for every so small steps, big bye, Okay,
small st Yeah, I'll take it. It's it's a minor victory,
nothing for me, but we must push forward. Matt. I
(25:42):
want to thank our friends at Walmart, big sponsors show Yes,
and you're hearing your commercials in the history you and
I working together, it may be your best work because
what I do is I listen to your commercials for
Walmart and you all that's spanglish. You say, yes, sir,
and I don't know a word. It means uh huh.
But I wind up trying to talk like you. Okay,
it's it's probably offensive and probably shouldn't do it. Okay,
(26:03):
Well this is not good, but I'm just saying. It's
just like I'm just making up little words and it's like,
did you order Yourjodo? See what I was saying? I
would go okay, but it can be to your door
within an hour with Walmart Plus. Yeah, you hear that.
Speaker 1 (26:15):
You hear that.
Speaker 3 (26:16):
This is what happens. Friends. You spend money, your company
spends money in the station. You can either spanglish or
ross or heartfelt message for me one of the your choice.
I can give heartfelt Spanglish. You know what we could
do tag team. I'll do full English, you do Spanglish,
or I could do spanglish. You do English, because if
you give me the script, I can read it. Okay,
wouldn't that be hysterical? No?
Speaker 4 (26:36):
All right?
Speaker 3 (26:37):
By the way, somebody sent me an email I listened
to the show said hey, love you guys. Would you
could ross to a Spanish good morning strippers? You don't
speak Spanish, not really, but could you do English? Could
you do good morning shrippers? Know how to say strippers
in Spanish? I'm giving you an assignment. You got time?
I'm good, yeah, I mean it wouldn't take you long
(26:58):
to figure it out. Why is your next I'm out
doing good now. I'm good okay? Seven one three two
one two five cheven ninty. I've been with her, so
the Matt tomaschel Ross. I have a good morning, mister Texas. Yes, sir,
I'm here. Oh my god, the worst candidate ever, it
is not.
Speaker 6 (27:15):
I have a you know, the good morning strippers and
Spanish is gwenda strippers. I don't know how to say
strippers and Spanish, but I know how to say gwen dia,
good morning.
Speaker 7 (27:26):
Good Okay, Okay.
Speaker 4 (27:28):
First I want to say.
Speaker 7 (27:29):
About my astros.
Speaker 4 (27:30):
I love them.
Speaker 6 (27:31):
They tried their best, they gave it there all, Like
Correa said, that's all we can ask from them. Honestly,
I think there should be changes, of course, but I
don't think they should fire the coach. I think was
really good. He just needs to have a healthy lineup.
And my second thing is about the bad bunny. Honestly,
(27:51):
you should try listening to him, Matt, He's.
Speaker 4 (27:53):
Actually pretty good. He's good music.
Speaker 7 (27:54):
I went to his concert. He's actually really entertaining.
Speaker 3 (27:57):
Yeah, the last time I saw bat and I know
anything about him, and I again, for me, it's so
laying a little hanging fruit to go. This guy sucks.
You don't know him. It's it's just too hard in
today's world, with so many hundreds of millions of people watching,
to find something that's universally loved. I mean, uh so again,
I he could, you could, You could have fifty minutes
(28:18):
of dead air and I wouldn't care at halftime. But
point being is, I did see him on Satay Night Live.
It's pretty funny. I I don't know, I don't know
really annoy anything about him and if and I'm gonna
watch because it's halftime, I mean, what am I gonna
go do? Go go mow the lawn during halftime? No,
am I gonna go work on my kids homework? Nona,
I'm gonna watch the halftime wings. I mean I may
do that too, may go to the bathroom after crushing
(28:38):
those wings. But that's a different issue for a different time. Okay.
But point being is the only thing I would say,
is this not about Bad Bunny I think of all
the genres you probably could find the biggest mass appeal
by frankly, what Taylor Swift mm hmm a rock band,
(28:59):
right when you think a rock really trying to be
you know, the NFL is trying to be more international,
but Bad Bunnies is the epitome of going international. One
of the biggest stars on the planet. Yeah, just doesn't
have to be here, but it just but again they're
not a huge star here too. Yeah, but I mean
still still a lot of people don't know. They know
who he is the name by name, but you couldn't
(29:19):
point out a song. I think a lot of a
lot of people could in different spheres far like in
the Vegas sphere or yes, in the Vegas sphere. All right,
I don't I don't know does one O four play
them on a regular basis.
Speaker 5 (29:35):
I don't even know. I got to I got to
a good song, you do, I got yeah? Just so
you get the vibe of how you like a rated
record kind of well, you don't even know records.
Speaker 3 (29:44):
The last four albums have hit number one in America
and the one before that was number two. So he's
doing Okay, Yeah, he's in the super Bowl again. Yeah,
I mean, the NFL is gonna be stuid about it.
I just by the way I saw something that jay
Z contacted him. I thought jay Z wasn't doing this
anymore because you said, wasn't your gut feeling it was
gonna be jelly Roll? I thought it was gonna be
a country I think I said country, but maybe said
(30:07):
jelly Roll. He's I mean he's country rap, right, I don't.
I don't listen to his music. I'm sorry, I'm sure
he's great. I mean, I'm sure he's in Sanley popular, right, Yeah,
people can if we've if we've discussed people can be
in Sanley popera that you don't know their music. That
would be bad money for me. That's a lot of people.
But I mean, if let's say that you got who
(30:28):
I mean, if you got I don't know, if you uh,
if Pearl Jam would play at halftime, would that be
universally beloved? I mean, I don't know, I guess I
don't know. I mean bad Bunny was uh he was
at minute made recently a few years ago, right, he
(30:48):
tore up the turf. Yeah, everybody was upset We're down
with Bunny. You tear up the turf cost the Astros game.
It wasn't his fault. Talk to Jimmy c Yeah, no, Jimmy,
we can do this, okay, Jack, It's fine, all right.
Ten forty three on the Matt Thomas, Joel Ross. We
are about fifteen minutes away from hearing from Dama Brown
(31:09):
and from Joe a spot over at Dyking Park seven
one three two one two five seven ninety and well,
there's a huge issue here with me. It's I don't
speak a word of Spanish, so this does nothing for me.
It's all right.
Speaker 5 (31:24):
Imagine it being sexual and like, okay, so then you
get the bottom it's.
Speaker 3 (31:27):
More tea then okay, that's right. Now imagine close your eyes, Matt,
I'm closed. Imagine you're at the club. Oh I am
at the club, by the way. I want a zoot suit,
a top hat and a cane. Jonathan got the lights
all yes, Yes, the fog machine's going off. Yes. Could
I be dancing to this? Absolutely? The beat's getting ready
to drop. Yes, and you're surrounded by big booty latinas
(31:51):
MM sounds fantastic here. I mean it's fine again. Now
there are some people I'm trying to think of. Okay,
go do you have that listen for I got rid
(32:11):
of the list, you know, I'm trying to think of
anybody that's now, look, Kendrick Lamar, I don't get and
I can't pretend to go, oh, that's fine. I don't
get it. But that's it's not he's not looking not
looking for me. Just I kind of get. I mean,
young people who like that kind of music, dance music.
I mean, I it's gonna have that kind of appeal.
(32:32):
I just don't like hip hop. I just I've never
really have. He's the king of Latin trap, Matt Latin
trap of what what are you trapping? Trap music? Okay,
he's like.
Speaker 5 (32:42):
The He's just a sex symbol basically, you know.
Speaker 3 (32:47):
But it was on sertain Live. I mean, you know
it's obviously they're poppling up to put him on there.
Look like I said, he's big in the Astros clubhouse,
is it?
Speaker 8 (32:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (32:58):
I mean everybody that says I'm not gonna watch you're
gonna watch it. We we are the our world is
the king of I'm not gonna do something, but yet
you want up doing it anyway, I'll give you two
examples the Astros. Uh moving America League. I'm never watching
the Astros again, people, Yes you are. Before that Major
League Baseball went on strike in what nineteen ninety four,
(33:20):
I'm never gonna go watch a baseball game again. Yeah
you did. You're gonna came back. He came back better
than ever. It took some juicing, but he came back. Well,
I mean it did. Whatever means Wire and Sammy Sosa juicing.
But thank you Mark Good, thank you, Rafiel pal Merrow,
thank you Mark. Whatever the case. Yeah, we Berry's like,
(33:40):
oh okay, I see how the game is played. You
know what, Honestly, what I'll do is the last time
I've done something where I said I'll never do something
is really about restaurants or gas station. You said you'd
never go somewhere again, and you did. Yeah, there's there's
a place in Porter and I won't name the restaurant.
We had one terrible experience there, and I drive by
it probably twice a week at minimum, and I always
(34:02):
go remember that time we went to that one place,
and we never go back. And we never went back,
and we always think to ourselves, Man, I wonder why
they're still open because they always put a special up
on their board and it's not really a special, like
like it was like a barbecue stuffed potato nineteen nine,
and I'm like, who would pay twenty dollars for mid
barbecue stuffed potato. So that's the only thing in my
(34:22):
life that I say I'm never doing something again. It's restaurant. Uh.
I'm trying to think of anything I swore off and
possibly went back to, well, probably drinking seven several times.
People do. People do it about smoking, People do it
about waking. I'm never gonna eat another fried apple pie
from again. I get that. Yeah, I'm never going to
this road. I think it's easy. It's the lowest hanging
(34:45):
for I'm never gonna go to a restauranting because it's
nine hundred million restaurant. You can choose me. You get
bad service, you don't go back. Everything else you kind
of got.
Speaker 9 (34:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (34:51):
I love baseball like I was. I don't even know
if Larry and Stafford listen to show. Larry's dropped the
textans more time that I can care to think of it.
Every year he comes back to him, No your back
with hilarious Stafford of the show You bet you me.
You've been through and through the Texas. You're never leaving them.
Uh No, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna leave the
Texans battle Red Ross for life. But you know they're
(35:11):
never going to the super Bowl as long as McNair's out.
The true it is. I feel that's a ridiculous statement.
I think it's it's a very extremely valid statement, and
so far I'm one for one on it. You ain't
going this year? Okay, the Pittsburgh Steelers are never going
to the super Bowl again. I would I would be
safe in saying that Steelers are better off going to
the super Bowl before the Texans do. I've been right
(35:33):
for like twelve years, but they've gone in one. Yeah,
but they're never going again.
Speaker 4 (35:38):
Oh they're not.
Speaker 3 (35:39):
I've been saying it for ten years. You have you
said that?
Speaker 10 (35:41):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (35:42):
I check that on your gut feelings. Yeh sure, what
good for you. Let's go to the phone seven one
three two one two five seven ninety all right, So
Statman wants to talk about the Lions, the Texans, the NFL,
and the Astros. You get like sixty seconds here, Statman.
So you've got a lot of work to do. It
a very short period of time. What do you got.
Speaker 9 (36:00):
Let's talk about the Let's talk about the fact that
Ross doesn't like hip hop. Just turn on Pandora and
make a make a station called akon a k O
N and he will learn that hip hop actually is
pretty cool.
Speaker 3 (36:16):
And Eminem is I like hip hop? What are you
talking about?
Speaker 9 (36:21):
I thought, Ross just oh well, then you need to listen.
Speaker 3 (36:27):
That's mind. I've listened to Bunby is one of my besties.
I don't like it.
Speaker 9 (36:38):
I don't like listen to Eminem. He's like a genius.
I mean, this guy like nobody. I mean, I'm serious.
Just just put on the acon on the Pandora and
see what you think and give it, give it, give
it a fair chance. And I would just like to
say that the Lions look that they're back. The Texans
look out their back. And I hate to say it,
(36:58):
but the Texans have the best in the whole league.
They've given him the least amount of points and unfortunately
the offense is lacking an offensive coordinator, which.
Speaker 4 (37:08):
Do not agree.
Speaker 11 (37:10):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (37:10):
Yeah, Nick Kelly has had a very mixed bag so far,
probably more to the more disappointment than anything else.
Speaker 9 (37:16):
Yeah, I would say that that that that uh Nico
Nico was yelling at him the other last week. Even
though he repeted it, it looked like he was yelling
right at him, saying, get going, like my father used
to say while we walked on the streets of New
York City, get going.
Speaker 3 (37:38):
Thanks dat Man, appreciate it, Thank you, stave Man. I
appreciate it.
Speaker 5 (37:41):
We just had a color Dave going. At that point, Matt,
you were saying, never do something again. They're watching when
people said they're never gonna watch the NFL game when
it took a.
Speaker 3 (37:48):
Knee, Oh that's right, yeah, yes, yes, I'm you know,
good times. There's a lot, he has a lot of things.
Ratings have gone grown every years as a revenue when
it continued. I always thought that they would never have
a Super Bowl overseas. I'm done with that. They're going
(38:08):
to play some overseas probably probably hopefully. The field's okay. Well,
I meant, couldn't just had a Rabia right the NFL
A blank check sales put it here? They could? Will
the NFL take it? They've been they have big enough
stadium there. Soccer they've had the Yeah, I think so okay, Yeah,
Chris Rinaldo was over there the way. Don't have a
big enough stadium. I don't know how. I'm not a
(38:30):
big overseas guy. Okay, I want to go to Dublin.
They look like I had a great Everybody was having
a great, a great time there. Okay. I mean I've
been to London before and it was just mid to me.
I didn't have a great time. I mean, now, granted
I was working about eighty percent of the trip, but
I didn't. I didn't like. It was cold, dreary, The
(38:51):
people are mean, they got terrible teeth. I mean, it's
just a bad experience. Okay. I would like to travel
to every country. I just don't have the means or
the time. But I mean, tell me, is double did
you watch you into that early game?
Speaker 12 (39:03):
No?
Speaker 3 (39:04):
Oh, I did.
Speaker 4 (39:04):
I was.
Speaker 3 (39:05):
I thought it was. I mean, the Steeler fans are
all over the place there. I mean, I was up,
but I was. I was at the I was at
the NRG Stadium. Orange a lot, getting enjoying yourself, getting buzzed.
That's all right, let's hear from a dinner Brown. Next
is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Let's go over
(39:26):
to Diking Park, right, now for dinner, Brown and Joe.
Speaker 13 (39:28):
Spotty you know right now, But I will tell you
that I'm I am the GM of the Astros. So
going forward, as I said, I'm the gym of the Astros,
and that's what I would expect to be tomorrow, the
next day, the next day.
Speaker 7 (39:48):
Okay, Matting for the clarity.
Speaker 13 (39:57):
Can you speak up, Matt, Sorry, very clear that a
couple of days ago about with Joe. Look, I mean
I made it very clear that, Look, Joe is the
manager and Joe was under contract.
Speaker 7 (40:11):
Another question, Okay, and you.
Speaker 10 (40:16):
Guys promoted Champ Smith very early lost your service time.
I guess in retrospector, you made the same decision at
what he gained in the eat of the big league
club all year.
Speaker 13 (40:28):
Yeah, I mean, look, we needed an outfielder, and so
I felt like Cam Smith learned a lot at the
major league level this year, and I think this season
that he had this year is going to be important
for next year's development. And so I would expect that
he's going to have a really good offseason and he's
going to come back like Gangbusters. So I really feel
(40:51):
like that need that we had in the outfield and
using him and letting him develop and get some time.
I mean, at one point he you know, was hitting
over to eighty five with over an eight hundred ops.
And you know, just like everything else, you know, you
you run into the ups and downs of this game.
But I think he's gonna learn a lot and he's
(41:11):
gonna be better for it.
Speaker 7 (41:13):
Okay, Dan, then Brian, Joe.
Speaker 3 (41:15):
First, Nandina.
Speaker 14 (41:16):
If you want to hop in statistically this year, you
guys were middle to lower of baseball. Is there anything
leg to believe that they can improve with the current
structure you guys have in place coaching wise, if you
feel like that.
Speaker 12 (41:31):
Middle and bottom of what you were referring to owners.
Speaker 3 (41:36):
In the scoring position, average, ops, home.
Speaker 12 (41:39):
Runs, Yes, I think there is areas, you know, offense
that where we can improve on. You know, I think
throughout the year we made some adjustments and we got
better incentive areas. But that's I think that's an area
that we as an organization need to look into. How
can we have bell equality of bats? How can we
improve on getting on base more frequently and and and
(42:02):
be better throughout the entire season.
Speaker 13 (42:06):
Yeah, And look, I mean anytime you get your and
I missing four months, you get Petis missing two months,
you get Pinion missing a month and a half, you
get Myers missing two months. I mean your numbers are
going to be down. You know, those are everyday major
league players that you don't have on your team.
Speaker 4 (42:24):
And so.
Speaker 13 (42:26):
You know, we'll address, you know, some of the things
like taking more pitches and being a little bit more selective.
But make no mistake, when you take pillars out of
your lineup, it's going to affect your team. It's going
to affect some of their bats. When your on Alpharez
is in a lineup, you have to pitch him, you
have to pitch guys around them differently. And so I
think the absence of the absence of urd On really
(42:50):
affected us big time.
Speaker 7 (42:52):
Hey, Brian, I jo if.
Speaker 14 (42:56):
You put any of your staff numbers said, they're they're
all coming back, or you chance to reevaluate you know,
your coach of straff of the future.
Speaker 3 (43:02):
Of those stats going forward.
Speaker 12 (43:04):
Uh, you know, Brian, you know season ended forty eight
hours ago and we are really trying to have some
conversation and see how we're going to move forward. So
that's where we that's where we at right now.
Speaker 15 (43:17):
Okay, Channler, as you as you look at the injury situation,
do you think there's seeing an injury profession problem.
Speaker 13 (43:26):
Or is it something that needs to be looked at
in the return and play and that's getting injured players back. Look,
I think this is an injured industry wide issue with
the injurty injuries. And you know, but like everything else,
we're gonna, you know, take a look at you know,
every one of our departments, right and so just to
(43:48):
make sure that we're not missing anything.
Speaker 4 (43:50):
But I think we have these industries.
Speaker 13 (43:53):
The injuries are industry wide, and there's you know, there's
guys throwing harder, there's guys chasing. Then I don't think
there's a magic bullet to why there's so many injuries.
I know we were affected big time from it, and
I think it cost us, you know, you know, the
postseason because of all the injuries. You know, one I
(44:14):
figured week two or three more wins with if we
had all of our guys. But I don't think there's
a magic bullet.
Speaker 2 (44:21):
You know.
Speaker 13 (44:21):
And as for just you know, taking a look at this,
we'll take a look at every department, you know, in
baseball operations of the.
Speaker 14 (44:32):
Alarus hand situation and Myers's calf in August.
Speaker 3 (44:37):
As You replied that anything that's could have done.
Speaker 4 (44:39):
It for situation.
Speaker 13 (44:41):
Yeah, I mean, look for Alvarez, potentially more imaging. I
think that may have helped us, but it's it's difficult
when imaging is telling you telling you one thing, and
you know, so you try to go with what you're seeing.
But maybe if we would have got more imaging, you know,
with the Alvarez, I mean, I think with Myers, Myers
felt like, you know, he was trying to push it.
(45:03):
He knew other guys were you know, hurt, and he
was trying to, you know, push it a little bit.
And you know, we just we need to get away
from this injury bug that we're up against.
Speaker 7 (45:15):
Matt Love you know that.
Speaker 3 (45:21):
Multi he was also amasist going in there this.
Speaker 2 (45:24):
Season, just lugging time.
Speaker 4 (45:27):
Next. Yeah, part of it is, as I said, look,
you know, with some of our guys.
Speaker 13 (45:34):
Being out, I think that affected you know us, I
think we you know, when Perettis went down, we started
seeing less pitches, pitches per at bat, and so look,
I think that's going to be a big focus, you
know for us, that you got to hunt your pitch
stick with hunting your pitch and get to more to
strike counts because you're making the picture of work a
(45:56):
little bit harder. And I think the fact that we
chased a little bit early, it's just I think our
guys were pressing a little bit because we had guys
missing in the lineup, and we tried to do.
Speaker 12 (46:06):
Too much, you know, just to add and I think there,
you know, there was a period of time when we
had some younger players at the major league level trying
to fill some of those holes, and so it takes
them time to set their feet in, and what the
(46:27):
Major League got back will look like potentially trying to
do too much because of the void of other players.
But I think they handle themselves really well. Uh, there
was a stretch during June and July where we had
younger players performing at a high level, you know, grinding
a bats, putting great bats together, doing little things very
(46:47):
well to help us win games. So that's also going
to take away from overall numbers on pitch selection and
stuff like that. But I think as a whole, there's
ways that we can we can address that and and
and we'll do that. We an offense that when we
do the little things well, we take pitches, we drive
the ball in hitters count. We've done it, you know,
(47:08):
all the years that I've been here. We just got
to get back to that discipline approach where we know
that we are an elite offense when we all work together.
And there were times where we kind of got away
from that. But we we have to do we have
to do a good job of bringing that mentality back
and we will. We will, there's no doubt about that.
Speaker 4 (47:27):
Do you look into that.
Speaker 16 (47:29):
Considerate to the players the right or efective effectually where yeah,
I was in there, I was in there all the
time and and we did, you know, but there's times
where you know, there is the the level of game
that we are playing, the platform, the expectations that sometimes
you know, players get away from that approach, which is
(47:52):
is very is very normal.
Speaker 12 (47:55):
We just got to, you know, continue to emphasize the
importance of control the teams that you can control and
be the best hitter you could be in that in
that in that in that bat and if you do that,
it will trickle down and now you get a whole,
you know, whole entire offense working together.
Speaker 7 (48:12):
Okay, Ari Christy then Brian for either of you.
Speaker 4 (48:16):
You guys have time twenty eight hours to look at.
Speaker 14 (48:18):
So what have you been able to evaluate so far
and what are your priorities to evaluate?
Speaker 4 (48:25):
Yeah, I mean so.
Speaker 13 (48:27):
We first of course been able to evaluate that. You know,
you came up a game short, right, and you dwell
on that, you know, for more than you'd like to,
and it's it's frustrating. You start looking back at you know,
every single close game, the one you know, some of
the ones that you you blue, and you just play
(48:49):
that back in your head and so you know, that's
something that we've been dwelling on a little bit. But
I mean that's a big part of the first forty
eight you know. It's just it's it's just hard to
envision that you're not, you know, playing in the postseason
and it's been tough. So that's pretty much what I've
been dwelling on. I haven't really gotten too much after.
Speaker 12 (49:11):
That, you know. And for me personally, it's having conversations
with our players. I want our players to be proud
of the effort and their fight till the end. So
it's me having conversations in the clubhouse, so you know,
picking up the phone before they they start the off
season and let them know that this They fought till
(49:32):
the end and we came out short, and I could
hear in their voice how they are ready to start
next screen training. You know, this is going to put
a ship on our shoulders. Like we we are a
postseason team. We are built to play in October, and
it was disappointing that we're not playing today. I'm not
happy about it, you know, but also we are learning
(49:57):
from things that we could have done better. How can
we improve our club? And our players are hungry to
get back to screen training and play. That's what my
forty eight hours have been a site with spending time
with my girls.
Speaker 7 (50:11):
All right, Christy Bryan and then Dan Joe.
Speaker 3 (50:14):
I mean, obviously you certainly don't want injuries, but because
you've had so many and you.
Speaker 13 (50:18):
Were able to get so many young players meaningful advantage
at that, do you believe.
Speaker 3 (50:22):
That will help you guys moving forward and have that experience.
Speaker 12 (50:24):
You know, I think that's a positive that guests kind
of lost out in the narrative of the injuries and
and and I don't want it to be part of
the I don't want the injuries just to be the narrative.
Let's talk about also our young players who came up
and did exceptionally well, and we're going to need those
players moving forward. We have been able to sustain these
success because young players come up and they play and
(50:48):
they turn out to be great players, all star players.
And I think we were able to find that out
through these injuries, where hey, so we've got some young
arms that came up and you know, help us get
to these late run position players who came up and
you know, fill some big shoes or some big time
players because they knew they need to do it. So
(51:11):
that that aspect not only performing but knowing that, you
know what this team needs me. I'm also this is
I'm showcasing, showcasing myself for next season. I need. I
want to put my name on the radar where I
think this team can count on me moving forward. And
I saw that development on our players, which I think
is very important when you try to sustain winning out
(51:33):
an own organization.
Speaker 3 (51:37):
And I know you're talking about evaluate your players, valuate
your staff, but do you do self evaluation?
Speaker 12 (51:44):
Yeah, it's sorry to cut you off, but absolutely I
look at myself in the mirror every night, after every game.
What can't have done better? How could I communicate myself
better with the player of my staff. This is my
second year on you know, managing this club, and I
continue to grow. I'm open minded about suggestions and ideas.
(52:07):
How could I make myself not myself better and make
my players better? Absolutely, if not I've been I would
not be helping. I would not be helping this organization
if I'm not holding myself accountable. Because at the end
of the day, I'm the manager of this team and
I'm responsible for what goes on in that clubhouse. So
(52:28):
I care about that deeply. I care about the organization,
and I care about, you know, putting the best product
on the field because our fans expect us to win,
and I take that very seriously.
Speaker 7 (52:38):
Okay, we'll go Brian, Dan Michael than Matt Brian.
Speaker 17 (52:42):
If you guys go down the spring or health, it
seems like you have a logjam of players on the
field of you know, credits and.
Speaker 4 (52:49):
All those guys.
Speaker 14 (52:50):
How do you see that play out in the off
season and going to the next year having all those
as coexist.
Speaker 12 (52:56):
Yeah, I think that's what the off season is for.
I think it's a great problem them to have, But
I think that will all this a self by itself.
Speaker 7 (53:05):
Okay, Dan, Dan in a two parts.
Speaker 14 (53:08):
Financially, where do you guys feel like you're going to
be in terms of how aggressive you guys can be
the soft season? And when it comes to trades, do
you feel like you guys have any unsouchable guys on
your rolls?
Speaker 4 (53:18):
Stuh?
Speaker 13 (53:20):
First, Uh, nobody's really untouchable. I mean you have to
keep every avenue open to try to get better, and
you know, if there's an opportunity to make a trade,
we'll make a trade. But you know, right now, our
roster is put together very well. I think we have
a really good team. If we stay healthy, we will
for sure be back in the dance in October.
Speaker 4 (53:42):
So what was the other part of that.
Speaker 3 (53:44):
Question financially just how the rest of you guys could
possibly be.
Speaker 13 (53:48):
Yeah, I mean Jim Crane is never held back, So
I mean I would think that we're going to have
the full ability to.
Speaker 4 (53:54):
Go out and you know, acquire and get better.
Speaker 13 (53:57):
And if there's areas that we think we need to
improve on, whether it's a starting pitcher or left hand bat,
you know, I think we'll be you know, in the market.
Speaker 7 (54:07):
Okay, Michael mattin heesus, this is Joe Dave and.
Speaker 10 (54:11):
Asked, also, usually October, you guys are playing baseball at
the ball parks.
Speaker 3 (54:15):
You guys have any plans for your all time? And
ops over a girl.
Speaker 12 (54:19):
An I'll tell you. I'll share you, uh you know what,
personal story, my little one. She she was very disappointed
that we're not playing October and you know, ask her.
You know, Daddy's home, we get to spend some time,
and she was in very thrilled about the the fact
(54:40):
that we're not in the dance. And I told her that,
you know what, uh maybe we we're gonna work really
hard to get back to October because everything she's known
it's October, which I you know, appreciate that from her,
but you know, she she said, Daddy, you guys are
a good team, and you know, thank you for for
being here for next couple of days, but I wish
(55:01):
you guys would be in the postseason. She mentioned Halloween.
We we've been in hotels for Halloween. All this, you know,
nice stuff that a ten year old would and and
and that you know, it touched my heart because you
know how much I care about my kids. But also
about playing October. And I was suspecting to play today
and it's really difficult not to be on a baseball
field today suiting up and representing uh the city. But
(55:25):
at the same time, it's it's time for us to
for me to reflect and you know, honestly, how you
know grateful I've been and how lucky we've been to
be in a postseason for a very long time. So
for me is it's time for me to you know,
reflect and how can we make this team better? How
(55:47):
can I make myself better, my staff better so we
could get back to October.
Speaker 7 (55:52):
Okay, Matt, Jesus and and Jasons.
Speaker 3 (55:56):
I'll see they roll us all of course, is how
how do you do that?
Speaker 12 (56:03):
Well, you know what, for me, Matt, we're going to
sit down and go go go through that. Obviously, you
know things were shuffle around because we were missing players,
so you go from Plan A to Plan ME to
Plane C. And what I do want to say is
that it's important to again remind how important Hotel Too
(56:28):
is for this organization. You go in there with a
Plan A. Injuries happened number one. This guy is posting
every single day.
Speaker 3 (56:35):
You know, he plays through.
Speaker 12 (56:37):
Pain ups and down easy in there, Joe, where you
want me to be? Let feel okay, second base, yes, DH, Yes,
here we go. That's very important. Now my job is
our job is to, you know, once all these guys
are healthy, put another plan in place where, uh, where
we could maintain all these guys healthy throughout the season.
(56:57):
I think that's going to be where my main focus
is going to be. How can we play these guys
where there's d H stays for everyone and you know
who's going to be playing here and there, so we
could keep these guys healthy. And once we do that,
once these guys are healthy, we we're going to find
ourselves playing deep in October. For for me, is Altuve,
he's always open to do whatever is best for the
(57:19):
team and respect him immensely.
Speaker 1 (57:23):
For that.
Speaker 3 (57:25):
Agent kind.
Speaker 13 (57:29):
That they can interest possible bring that, Yeah, I mean
we would have interest in bringing them back and uh,
you know, having some conversations because we if if you
don't bring them back. Definitely the backup catcher and he's
been right, I think one of the best backup catchers
in the league. And so we would like to bring
(57:49):
them back and we'll have conversations about it. You know,
but if he's going to be a free agent, so
if he decides to go somewhere else, you know, we
have to be in the market for a backup and
so but we would have definitely have interest in talking
to him.
Speaker 7 (58:07):
Okay, hesus, Randy, and then Chandler.
Speaker 18 (58:10):
Yeah, can you invest this and then for perhaps Joe afterwards,
can you tell me what your rotation options look like
for for next year and how realistic is that that
you could go with these arms without and you have
to create his higy news Friver.
Speaker 4 (58:28):
Yeah, I mean I think, uh, you know, it's gonna
be headed up.
Speaker 13 (58:31):
With with Brown and uh, you know, we're gonna have
some conversations, uh like we've had in the past with
you know, with Valdez, and then you know, we got
you know, some young guys that uh, you know, we're
gonna see what they could do. But you know, and
then we're gonna have some other guys coming back off
(58:54):
the I l you know, Javier is one that I
think he was the one that I thought once he
came back, he started getting it up to ninety five.
He had a couple of games where he touched ninety six,
and so I think he could be a big part
of it. You know, blue Ball.
Speaker 4 (59:11):
You guys saw what he did at the end of
the year.
Speaker 13 (59:13):
You know, he's still had the consecutive scoreless innings, you know,
so we'll give him, you know, a good look. And
so look, we're gonna have some options. We're gonna probably
be in the market for sure to you know, trade
for an arm. But you know, we we we definitely
have options. And you know, I'll let Joe talk to
(59:33):
some of some of the other guys because he wanted
to get in on this too. But but I do
feel like, you know, we're gonna have enough options in
terms of our rotation.
Speaker 12 (59:43):
Yeah, and you know, just to I think he touched
on Howvy. I think Howvey was really show towards the
end of disease and that we we're going to see
the heavier that we saw in years back. Obviously, Hana
Brown sally young candidate for me, he's one of the
best in the game. Feeling great about him, you know,
coming back and being that that that workhorse that he
(01:00:05):
was this this past season. And there's some young players
that were really excited about We were talking August September
about you know, all the some pieces some of these
younger players that are that are coming up, which we
will have conversations once we start putting this together. But
I'm really excited about the future, guys. Uh, I think
that it's going to be a fun off season for
(01:00:26):
us trying to figure all these out and trying to
put the best team on the field. I'm looking forward
to it.
Speaker 19 (01:00:31):
On the catcher situation, some people will in baseball wonder
if your catchers really had the respect for the toy
that a Martimo nado Ava your pitcher set were kind.
Speaker 4 (01:00:46):
Of kept them in line.
Speaker 20 (01:00:48):
Did you do you think since that your catchers have
gained that trust, where say, if an ace kind of
goes outline, that you could keep them in lin because
Martin did a really good job of managing your pitchers.
Speaker 12 (01:01:01):
Yes, to answer your question, I think our catchers did
a really good job on that aspect.
Speaker 4 (01:01:08):
And strikeouts.
Speaker 7 (01:01:13):
Randy and and Chandler's.
Speaker 17 (01:01:15):
Poor question, guys, the impact Carlo's career had and coming
back we could talk about that since her arrived and
the leadership people brought back on the field in the clubhouse,
and moving forward to go to the spring. The second question,
the sample size of the Zach Cole, what did he
show you in this time of and looking forward with.
Speaker 12 (01:01:37):
Yeah, obviously the Carlos huge impact. Happy to have him back,
and I'll be I'll be you know, touching base with
him in the next couple of days. We're going to
go have dinner and we're going to talk about a
few topics that I want to bring up, and but
he will be very much involved in My discussion is about,
(01:02:00):
you know, how we're going to make screen training, how
things that we we're going to address in spring training.
I personally like to empower some of our leaders to
have a say and how we're going to address this, uh,
you know, our aspects of our game that we need
to address off on. So Carlos will be in the
middle of those conversations. In sack, Cole obviously came in
and uh, you know, I was very impressed with the
(01:02:24):
power h the how calm and collective he was doing
his bats, how well he played center field, the throw
he made in LA that last the pre the second
game of that series. I was really impressive. That was
a big out in a big moment and he was
able to execute that throw, which I thought it was
(01:02:47):
very impressive. So I'm really excited not only about him,
but a lot of the younger players that came up
this year, and as we plan for our future, we
got to really, you know, consider so these guys because
they they did show some ability to play at the
highest level in doing during a playoff run.
Speaker 15 (01:03:09):
Okay, Chandler, he said it on a lot of the
fishers that were coming off from the Guyls, and you guys,
that was in part all the prices of why you
guys went so.
Speaker 14 (01:03:22):
There heavy, I guess looking back and looking for did
you guys do have a picked.
Speaker 4 (01:03:27):
From the ile ing them to spring?
Speaker 15 (01:03:29):
Do you have to be temper your expectations for what
fishers provided you coming off with the injured list after.
Speaker 3 (01:03:35):
Such wall layoffs.
Speaker 13 (01:03:37):
Yeah, look, I would say that, you know, we were
really relying on you know, Javier, he came back I
thought he did over did pretty well, you know arra
getty h he came back off. You know, he had
some good moments and not so good moments. But you know,
we really have confidence in those guys, and you know,
(01:03:59):
we felt that they were going to be good, and so,
you know, could we have maybe addressed some some pitching.
I think our focus was more on the bat and
so but I mean, I still believe in some of
those guys that you know, we had that were coming back.
Speaker 4 (01:04:16):
But I mean I think the bat was the way.
Speaker 13 (01:04:20):
The bats were the way to go because we were,
you know, so beat up, you know, and we needed
also to get a left hand bat.
Speaker 4 (01:04:29):
Talked about.
Speaker 3 (01:04:31):
Talking about where you guys wise that year, about Jim always.
Speaker 4 (01:04:35):
Headed for you guys in the gym season.
Speaker 14 (01:04:39):
It just about what that year's gonna say, kind of
laying out of the plans or Bullard that Shi.
Speaker 4 (01:04:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (01:04:44):
Look, so I talked to Gym on a regular basis,
and you know, we consistently talk about you know, the
major league team, the staff, you know, front office staff,
and so our conversations are constant.
Speaker 7 (01:05:02):
Yes, yes, Okay, one morning list, Kim.
Speaker 3 (01:05:06):
Okay, if you're dressed, If.
Speaker 4 (01:05:08):
You do, I call that.
Speaker 18 (01:05:09):
I have a kind of a cheap part question.
Speaker 3 (01:05:10):
You talking about pitchers.
Speaker 19 (01:05:12):
Have you talked about about what you guys do with
Grant and is.
Speaker 4 (01:05:15):
There goush Yeah, So Lance, I'll answer that one.
Speaker 13 (01:05:22):
Look, the plan is for Lance to come into spring
training and and try to compete and and and help
this club. I mean, he had some really bright moments,
you know, this year, and it's very difficult coming back
off an injury and where you haven't pitched in two years,
and so I think that, you know, he gave us
his all, and he had moments where he was really good,
(01:05:43):
particularly one in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. But you know,
we would expect that, you know, pitching this year, we
would expect them next year to be even better. And
so we're hoping you know that, uh, you know, he
comes in and he he's ready to go because we
can use him in that rotation and we can get
(01:06:04):
you know, you know, the lands that you know he's
capable of being.
Speaker 4 (01:06:09):
Second part what was it, hater update? Oh sorry, Oh yeah,
so the hater update. You know, we continue to get
imaging consistently.
Speaker 13 (01:06:17):
He's getting better, he feels better, and so I feel like,
you know, confident about it. But you know, of course,
we won't know fully until he starts to throw it.
He's going to start throwing at some point and then
we'll know more. But it's moving in the right direction.
Speaker 7 (01:06:35):
Okay, we'll switch over to Spanish now, right.
Speaker 3 (01:06:37):
All right, that will be our post. Uh, it will
be our coverage. I should say of the press converns
with Dana Brown and Joe Spotta trying to think about
these things. Hey, what is well, we're gonna we're gonna
push gut feelings to twelve thirty. Give us a chance
to kind of let us breathe about what we heard there,
catch up on a couple of breaks we do. We
go commercial free on that because we wanted to let
(01:06:58):
you hear everything they have to say. So Ross and
I were on through a couple of things. If you
heard something interesting or not interesting to you, or something
that was of a concern or hey I like what
they said, you are now free to jump aboard and
let us hear from you. At seven one three two
one two five seven ninety seven one three two one
two five seven eighty good half hour of questions from
the media to both Joe A. Spotted and to Danna Brown.
(01:07:23):
We'll hold off our commentary about what we thought was interesting,
what was surprising not surprising. We'll get to all that
coming up after I tell you about Big City Wings.
Since we kind of skipped through our first break of
the hour, we're gonna make that up. So we're gonna
take a call here real quick and then get back
on the clock to the best of our ability. But again,
sometimes breaking news you got to fix things, right ROSSI
any initial thoughts about anything you heard, not nothing breaking
(01:07:51):
things startling, No, uh guts. Danner saying that he's going
to be the guy sounds like Joe's still going to
be there as well. I did think the question. I
think it was Dan Matthews asking the question about the
basically asking the hitting coaches without saying the hitting coaches
didn't seem like it was a ringing endorsement, saying and
(01:08:13):
we're going to evaluate that part of it. So I
feel like there could be something in the works for
as far as a change there. Did say they need
a trade for arm so only brought up fromber really
one time, and kind of I thought him passing. I mean, please,
no one should think that Frobervelda is as seriously coming back.
He's going to hit the market. It could be a scenario,
(01:08:35):
I mean, could we if he's like not signed in
February and the askers say, sure, whatever, we'll bring you
on a one year deal. It could. I could see
that happening. I could, frankly, even if the Astros don't
sign him. I could see Frober having to wait a while. Yeah,
look at how late these rags have been waiting. These
these they be waiting a long time. And while you
were bad for two months of the season. Yeah, and
you threw a pitch that hit your ch catch in
(01:08:57):
the chest and he wasn't ready for it. That's it's
not going on the resume that great. Kathy and Dickinson
eleven thirty four on seven on a Hello, Kathy, Hi,
thank you for taking my call.
Speaker 21 (01:09:09):
Sure, I think it's my first time calling in, But
I'm a general, you know, viewing listening fan. I don't
keep up on statistics or some averages. But what I'm
noticing on my end is after watching the ash shows
for many years and especially this year, they they need
some help, and not just in their.
Speaker 8 (01:09:31):
Team like their players.
Speaker 21 (01:09:33):
They need some changes and some help. You I might
have brought it up in their training staff. I'm a
physical therapist, but I'm just saying the athletic trainers have
got to do some adjustments, some isolation of soft tissue
training to get them from to be stronger and prevent
some of the injuries that they're getting.
Speaker 8 (01:09:53):
And I know they're trying to do their job.
Speaker 21 (01:09:55):
But I'm just saying as an observer looking in. And
also the press conference was kind of blase a to me.
There was nothing says same. We can't wait for the
spring training. We're going to change you or and do
things better next year. They say that every year, and
especially this year when they didn't make playoffs, but something
(01:10:16):
in general. You know, yes, of course we need some players,
just some different things changing, they're coaching whatever, But something
has got to be done on a which I guess
you could call not a lower level, but in athletic
training and the trainers they're not addressing what needs to
be addressed to prevent injury, and injuries are reoccurring, and
we have had quite a few this year, which summer
(01:10:37):
accidental where yo Don slipping on home plate whatever, but
he's done out quite a bit. But yeah, So that's
basically my external comments on the whole situation, and I
just I love them to death and hopefully hopefully still
get it together next year.
Speaker 3 (01:10:52):
Thanks Kathy for the phone call. We'll address what she's
concerned about next eleven thirty six on Sports Talk seven ninety.
It's pretty universal from those that have sent us some
messages on social media.
Speaker 4 (01:11:06):
It was.
Speaker 3 (01:11:07):
I mean, honestly, I don't know if I was expecting
a lot of breaking news out of it. I did
want to play it because it's easier for us to
let them say as compared to us paraphrasing, so you
can get the context of what is being said. Clearly,
the injuries were a huge part of the team, and
I would expect if I was in their shoes that's
the exact same thing. But you have to also remember,
(01:11:29):
ladies and gentlemen, they're not going to give you a
lot of intelligence. Literally two days after the season, they're
going to have to evaluate the medical staff. They're going
to have to evaluate the hitting coach. They're going to
have to evaluate themselves. They're gonna have to evaluate the
current twenty six man roster. Yes, the current I do believe,
and this could be the case with every manjor league
(01:11:50):
baseball team, whether you're healthy or not, you simply can't
run it back. There's too much fluidity in sports, in
professional leagues to just say we get everybody back, we're
gonna look forward to Lance. I mean, if you're if
you're banking on Lance mccullor's helping you in twenty twenty six.
That's foolish. And I don't think they believe what they said. No,
I don't think they are either a quick Can I
(01:12:13):
Devil's advocate Kathy from last segment, I mean we had
to get to a break. Yeah. God, she was talking
about how the trainers aren't doing good and they're not
doing preventative medicine. And uh Jeremi Randall, who's come under
some fire for some people on the Sweach media. I
bet he's been the trainer since twenty fifteen. And I'm
(01:12:34):
not I'm just talking out loud here. Let me just
put it that way. He won they won like training
staff of the year early on in his tenure, and
he's this is his tenth season and this is the
worst the injuries have ever been. So what we have
to parse out and what Dana Brown and the Astros
have to parse out, and I think they will probably
make a change is okay. So was the training staff
(01:12:57):
really good for all these years and the attention to
details slipped or their training methods became outdated? Because it's
not like this rash of injers team for the Astros
is completely unprecedented. And can I say also training staffs
and athlete.
Speaker 5 (01:13:13):
It definitely relies on the relationship you have with the
person taking care of you and how they feel about
you and what.
Speaker 3 (01:13:18):
Which in itself. And it's a good point by you, Jonathan.
If there's a relationship issue between trainer and athlete, that
that could be the core problem. Not they're not, they're diagnosed.
Speaker 13 (01:13:29):
You know what.
Speaker 3 (01:13:29):
Yeah, I can ask this to Jonathan professional professional, d
you one athlete?
Speaker 4 (01:13:33):
So did?
Speaker 3 (01:13:34):
The guy's been a good trainer in like training, they've
been training staff of the year and he's been here
ten years and all of a sudden this year he
forgot how to be a trainer, or.
Speaker 5 (01:13:41):
That's what I'm saying. And because he sounds like he's
he's been for ten years as well. But even in
track and I've been to two institutions, there's been training
like people I won't go to because I but my
teammates will.
Speaker 4 (01:13:52):
They like it.
Speaker 3 (01:13:53):
This is this they help work.
Speaker 5 (01:13:54):
But if I'm working with this woman or this man
or whatever trainer and I'm like, I'm not getting better.
I've been my cast, this is been hurting. I haven't
fixed anything. And I go to a different trainer, He's
all right, do this, this is this, Oh you're doing
this this, and they listen to you. It's a lot
about relationship as well and your own recovery and everything
else with the athlete and trainer.
Speaker 3 (01:14:14):
So it's an an individual basis. Yes, I mean I
can't imagine. Look, it'd be hard to us imagine that
a trainer for any sports team is going to have
twenty six strong relationships. You'd like it to be, but
we got to do in realities here. Some trainers may
say you should be pushing yourself. Other trainers should say
you should be backing off exactly. The player doesn't say, well,
(01:14:35):
that's a good idea, or the player says it's a
bad idea. I know more, or my own personal trainer knows. Yeah,
a lot of these guys have their own teams. Yes,
all I will say is this, If they don't do
a ridiculously deep dive, it's malpractice of the organization. Uh huh. Yes,
And I think talk to the players. I promise you
(01:15:00):
there are going to be two different sides of the story.
And the question is going to be up to jet,
it's gonna be up to data, and it's to be
able to gym as to which side they believe. There's
no way in the world if you are in that
clubhouse and you have so many of your players, your
fellow teammates hurt, that you're not scared that the medical
attention that you're receiving on a day to day basis
(01:15:22):
isn't flawn some way. That's just I mean, I'm sorry,
it would just be the case. They would be there
would be if I was a healthy player for the Astros,
I'd be thinking to be part of me thinking it's
not a matter of if I get hurt, it's win
because something we're doing in this building is not right.
Now that may not be true, but that's the player's perspective,
(01:15:43):
as I would say. If I was a player and
last year was basically the first we talked about it,
I think, right, I mean, we weren't talking about the
Astros ever since, ever since Kyle Tucker situation. That's what
I'm saying, the Kyle Tucker think everything. And then this
year everything has kind of come toad and again, silence
isn't always golden. That you didn't say a word about
(01:16:07):
it last year. Now this year they were a little
more transparent with the injuries. Once yeah, after a lot
of cons after a while, it took up an entire
page of media notes section. This is the truth. All right.
We are now going to take our final break of
the hour and catch us up, and then we're gonna
we're gonna get some more phone calls with the news
at noon coming up. Oh wonderful. We'll do got feelings
at twelve thirty. Yes, we got NFL rewind at one
(01:16:30):
twenty lovely and we have bad Bunny, believe it or not,
a lot of Raiders running game on the NFL run
it rewind. Uh oh he did catch two touchdowns right,
uh ray for a sixty four yard ran for one. Yeah,
I saw that. I was expecting a text, and matter
of seconds after that happened, I watched it. Sometimes I
(01:16:52):
leave you, Maddie, you don't need to remember I give it,
I shall take it. And that's what we'll go to
break seven forty seven sports to seven eight. All right,
we are now caught up, back on our regular clock.
We thank everybody for listening to the show and allowing
our great advertisers to speak for themselves, and ROSSI and
(01:17:19):
going to Walmart can give me some more of the
sloppy Joe Mix I make I got lunch for lunch today.
That's good. Sloppy Joe's underrated. Love Sloppy Joe's My kids
bougie not so much. Oh really, yeah, girl, I don't
know who raised them? What's wrong with Sloppy Joe. I
don't know what we did wrong? And I love me
some Sloppy Joe's. I gotta sneeze Ross for Instagram.
Speaker 4 (01:17:41):
Yah, you know what.
Speaker 3 (01:17:41):
Follow me on Instagram at Sports RV. You can see
me smiling like a seven year old child standing next
to Kevin Durant. We we've, i would say, in the
sixteen year history of this show, almost sixteen years, we've
probably fan boyd less than five times. We completely fan
boyd yesterday and I'm well, I was holding it together
for the picture and then he put he put his
(01:18:03):
Kevin Durant put his arm on my shoulder, and I'm like,
oh my god, Kevin Durant is putting his arm on
my shoulder. So if you want to see me smiling
like a like a schoolgirl as Kevin Durant puts his
arm on my shoulder, go check out my Instagram at
Sports Harvey. It's fably Ben Dubos, who does the logger line,
was like, why didn't you ask him about that time
that you were so mean to the lineups of the
(01:18:24):
Golden State Wars. I'm like, I got to be honest
with that. First of that was twenty eighteen.
Speaker 4 (01:18:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:18:29):
Secondly, he's been announced seven million times as rudely. Yeah,
I don't think he was like, oh man, I was
really shook by that. That'd be fine to bring. But
I mean we only get nine minutes with him. I
appreciate him obviously for making any time, yes, but yeah,
I mean we could spend an hour plus with him.
I mean he was so he was thoughtful, engaged, making
(01:18:51):
eye contact with both of us the entire time. It's
funny because again I was not the Walter cronkind of journalism.
I said. I was like, Katie, this is and he goes, yeah,
now I'm trying to get him busted for tampering Charger.
Oh I was not. I mean, I mean, yeah, you were.
You were trying to Woodward and Bernstein. I didn't mean to.
It was purely bags it clearly, but yeah, I was like,
(01:19:14):
this is surround. He goes, I know he's I guess
I've been coming to this building for fifteen years, and
I turned left right away when you get in, and
now you got to go a little bit further down.
Speaker 4 (01:19:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:19:22):
Yeah, that was funny, good stuff. Yeah. So if you
want to catch those interviews are available on the iHeart
Radio podcast in our sports seven onty dot com what page.
Yes they are all right, let's go back on the
phones and talk to Brian and Paarland's been patially waiting.
Hello Brian, guys, and a.
Speaker 2 (01:19:39):
Good job with KD.
Speaker 22 (01:19:40):
Yes, say Ross, I'm sure you were thrilled to know
that KD also has not washed his hands since.
Speaker 18 (01:19:44):
He met you.
Speaker 3 (01:19:45):
Yes, I was been a thrill for you as well.
Speaker 22 (01:19:51):
As Yeah, you were as big as celebrity as he is.
Speaker 3 (01:19:54):
Of course that's got to be thrilling.
Speaker 22 (01:19:57):
Uh No, I mean, anybody who thinks on that Astros
press conference and you were gonna hear or shattering news
that hey we're gonna we're trading Christian Walker tomorrow and
moving Paradis the second or you know, or moving you know,
you're not going to get that A lot of introspective.
Speaker 2 (01:20:13):
By you know.
Speaker 22 (01:20:14):
The one that did kind of surprise me is you
know the question about all the infielders because you do
also have Bryce Matthews waiting.
Speaker 9 (01:20:20):
In the wings. So I think it was a good question.
Speaker 1 (01:20:23):
I would love to, you know, maybe kind.
Speaker 22 (01:20:25):
Of figured see how like Bryce Matthews fits in the plans,
because you do have a glut h in the infield
when all those guys do come back and get healthy.
I think also they having that left handed.
Speaker 11 (01:20:38):
Starter and Farmer is huge.
Speaker 22 (01:20:40):
Not Tay you bring Farmer back, but if you're going
to address the starting pitching ahead and look at the
free agent list to see who might be out there
and maybe to get another left handed starter and seeing
one if you guys know roughly, I know you're taking
into account arbitration, but you know, getting a break you
off the off the books, Josea Bray, you're not Brian
Montaro Pressley as well, and not having to pay from
(01:21:04):
Bird twenty plus in arbitration. Roughly, how if there's a
projection of how much money the Astros would have to
work with, obviously you're going to Korea coming back on
the books and two days money and all that, if
that number is roughly out there, and then also and
finally for those of us who who did join late
(01:21:24):
to the Jake Myers Fan Club. You know, knowing the
fact that he rushed back, what other benefits are we
going to possibly get to make up for that time
off that we did not get with Jake Myers. So
that question is specifically to the president of you know
what we played the do moving forward to alleviate those concerns.
Speaker 3 (01:21:43):
Thanks, Brian. We're just we're just gonna support Jake whenever
he's out there. Apparently, according to Dana Brown, and kind
of pushed himself a little bit too hard with the
calf injury. I mean, that's not shocking news to anybody,
and he wanted to be out there, and there was
a lot of guys trying to gut things out. You
know why you do this is because you're thinking, all
these guys are hurt. I can walk, not one hundred percent,
(01:22:06):
But I want to be the difference in this team
making the playoffs and not making the playoffs. That's what
and that's what Eastach Proties did, is like, man, we're
still in first place when I went down. I don't
I want to make the postseason. I play baseball to win.
The best team I've been on since I've been the
major leaguer. I mean, I look pretty has had a
(01:22:27):
little bit of a sketch kind of a reputation coming in.
I mean two time traded for probably for a reason,
and for me one hundreds of percent respect for that
guy for fighting through all that. Yeah, he did not
have to do what he did, and he wanted to
be on this team and he wanted to contribute it
and he came back. Same thing for Jake Myers. I mean,
(01:22:48):
and Jordon probably was managing some hand pain when he
came back, but then unfortunately the ankle thing happened as well.
It's a weird season, man, now, tough season. The roster
is currently put together. It's hard to even do that
because you've got some guys that are gonna have arbitration
bumps and salary, so it's hard to even gauge on
that you are gonna lose fromber off the books. You
still have Christian and then you get the l two
(01:23:09):
ve money start to kick in. Mccolor is still on
your on your on your table. Jesus Sanchez maybe non tendered,
I'll give you another one. Yeah, Mauricio Dubon non tender,
supposed to get a bump, But I mean, do you
feel like he's uh, he's uh, just an extra need
(01:23:32):
that you don't have to have him with you have
when you well, the question is you have Romoniaius who
could cover the infield, and a lot of guys who
can play outfield. I don't know if you have Ramoni
Ureus and Jose and Mauricio Dbaum the same Russ. I'm
saying twenty five exactly. All right, the news and Noon
is coming up in a matter of moments. Come on
and enjoy the conversation. Seven one three two one two
five seven ninety seven one three two one two five
(01:23:54):
seven NINTI. We will also play a little bit of
some of the comments once they get clipped into our system.
What you heard about a half an hour ago. If
you just are just joining us, Dana Brown, Joe A
spot A meeting with the media together, Dana Brown saying, yes,
he is a general manager today tomorrow he said, Joe A.
Spotta is the manager today tomorrow. Okay, again, I'm just
(01:24:17):
trying to put the pr spin on this. I don't
think you put both those guys out there. If Jim
Cran's ready to make a move, I would say, yeah,
I would agree with you, but there could be what
if Jim Crane's on the fence, what if he still
needs to evaluate wants to talk to players? And I
guess you could say, well, if you wait much longer,
what are you waiting for?
Speaker 2 (01:24:35):
You?
Speaker 3 (01:24:36):
If you're gonna have this end of season media availability,
m as, we'll do it right, Yeah, all right. Twel
o'clock Sports Talk seven ninety is the Matt Thomas Show
with Ross. Here we go what twelve five? It is
the Matt Thomas Show with Ross coming up at the
bottom of the hour. We'll do our gut feelings. It's
(01:24:57):
master gut feelings, you got woo yes, baseball predictions on
the playoff gut feelings, did and coaches gut feelings. I
don't think they want to be listening to those gut feelings.
I don't think they wanted to listen to at Prescott rience.
I don't think so. There was there was a lack
of endorsement, that's for sure. Also at one twenty today
it's Ross's NFL rewind, which will be a lot of
(01:25:18):
asking genty highlights, I'm sure, over and over and over
and over again, which is fine and believe or you
brought it up last week when he struggled. Someone bring
it up when he's when he's running for ten. It's
only fair. It's only fair. And then we got believing
it or not. Today all things about bad Bunny Right now,
twelve six is time now for that he was at noon,
and with that we go to the Uh let's go
(01:25:40):
with you are the Carl Ravage of Sports center anchors
in Houston? Yes, Matthew, well the news it, dude. We
do have to start with the baseball playoffs getting underway
right now. The Tigers and Guardians just getting started. Trek
Scoobel on the hill for the Detroit Tigers against Gavin
Williams of the Cleveland Guardians. Later on you'll have the
(01:26:03):
Padres facing off against the Cubs, Red Sox, and Yankees
on ESPN. I know that's gonna shock you, Matt on ESPN.
As are the Reds and Dodgers the late night's eight
o'clock game, Dodgers big favorites, every other game fairly close today.
(01:26:24):
How's it feel? The postseason and is underway and the
Astros are not involved? Can I just tell you all
from the bottom of my heart, this sucks. I know,
I know there's some people out there. I won't mention
names that one. I don't want the answer to make
the playoffs. Let them get healthy. That's ridiculous. Any rooting
individual rooting interest macro or micro for you, I'll give
(01:26:47):
you mine real quick. I am rooting for Aaron Judge
to fail. I am rooting for sho Hello Tany to
play well and pitch well if he does. And I'm
rooting for Cole Tucker to have a big postseason. That's
because you're a selfish. I'm hungry, don't want to get
your credit card out to pay for a nice ABATCHI
(01:27:08):
grilled dinner. I'm just telling you what I'm rooting for.
By the way, well you also, oh you added we
added a writer. There's a fast food rider for all
three of us as well. By the way, I don't know, no,
you know, you're just working hard, That's what, Okay. If
he goes one for eleven in the series, I don't
(01:27:30):
think you'd make a series worthy of losing money. I
mean I think, I don't know, I I think. But
if he goes like five for eleven with two jacks,
if he wants up being the national MVP and playoffs MVP, okay. Yeah,
I think he can help himself more than he can
hurt him. I will say this, Kyle Tucker, You're a
nice fellow. I hope you go oh for nine with
six strikeouts and you pull a quad oh Man, pull
(01:27:52):
a quhi need on your dime.
Speaker 2 (01:27:57):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (01:27:57):
Okay, So a couple of new a nose as far
as baseball in the end of the season. Carlos Mendoza,
the Mets manager. As the Mets collapsing on the stretch,
he will be staying, okay. Rocco Baldelli, Twins manager, who
I like. I think he's smart. Yeah, I like him too.
He is out after a seven and ninety two season
(01:28:18):
for the Twins games seventy seventy okay. And Bruce Bochi
is out as the Texas Rangers manager, and either he
will be retiring getting an advisory role within the Rangers organization,
or he'll be back wearing Giants gear next year as
a manager. Is Bob Melvin got let go one quick
note as I was talking about Otani and the Dodgers,
(01:28:40):
he will probably start a potential Game three How about
that Game three series on the line?
Speaker 8 (01:28:47):
Show?
Speaker 3 (01:28:48):
Hey Otani hitting and pitching? That would be cool. I'm
rooting for it, you know what. So go Reds for
one game, go Dodgers for the next. Let's get a
game three with Otani on the mountain. That would be
get your popcorn ready right there for me. Anybody wishing
for the Tigers to be to and done? So maybe
the aj Hinch Trumers won't go away? You want them
(01:29:09):
to beat you and done? Yeah? Does that mean more
likely he would come here, more likely that he may
not survive in Detroit?
Speaker 12 (01:29:14):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:29:15):
All right?
Speaker 3 (01:29:15):
Again, his contract runs out of the end of the season.
H all right, Matt. As we know, it's media day
across the country, or it was yesterday as well for
the NBA. We had Rockets Media Day. Shout out to
all the great folks the Rockets for helping us out
get us some great players including Kevin Duranham and Thompson
and Barry Smith, Barrius Smith Junior and coach Imadoka.
Speaker 9 (01:29:38):
Well.
Speaker 3 (01:29:39):
Of course, a lot of talk around the NBA about
Kawhi Leonard. He says the allegations of his no show
deal are inaccurate. I understand the full contract and the
services that I had to do. I don't deal with
conspiracies or the clickbait analysts or journalism that's going on.
I would or rather have said, yeah, all caught me.
(01:30:02):
I'd rather speak to my lawyer. Yeah, I mean, I
mean he doesn't talk about Jim. He said, Oh man,
y'all got me. I yeah, I took the money on
the side. I apologize, So there you go. Also a Labron,
James says he's not worried about his uh, He's not
worried about his timetable with the Lakers, not worried about
(01:30:22):
his contract situation. There was a Instagram video of him
posted on his ig with the Lenny Kravitz song he
Ate Over Till It's Over in the background. Do you
think he plays somewhere else beside the Lakers before his
career is over him? I can't rule it out. I
can't rule out him saying, I mean, wherever that opportunity
(01:30:43):
may be the best place for him to get a
ring because the reality he's not getting six. But he
know he's chasing six. He is, He's the only reason
why he's in it is six. Yeah, he's not happening
for him if I'm him and I want that six
ring so bad less something dramatically four, He needs to
win two more. While I'm saying, because look, Jason Tannem
(01:31:05):
will be back next year, Tyree's halliburn and be back
next year. It still even feels like the East would
be an easier stretch and run to go get that
ring and compar to go in the West. He joined
the Lakers, might as well join the Celtics.
Speaker 4 (01:31:18):
Got em.
Speaker 3 (01:31:19):
He'll he'll be bouncing around more. I mean he and
kd both. I mean, when you're in the league, as
long as these guys have been in, they're just gonna
be bouncing around around lately. I mean most of Malone
bounced around a lot. Who else, I don't know, Dominique Wilco,
We can think of guys Chris Paul, but I mean
Moe was the first one to do it. Yeah, for sure.
Uh And this will be mentioned on the NFL rewind,
But it also was big sports news in general. Unfortunately,
(01:31:40):
Tyreek Hill a dislocated knee, which is much more severe
people have heard of dislocated knee caps. He dislocated his knee,
which means there's a lot of ligaments shredded in his knee.
So by it's behind her left shoulder blade. That's it
looked bad. He had his ace and other ligaments in
(01:32:01):
his knee were worse torn. As he's having surgery today
and apparently it's not even gonna be acl surgery today.
He's having He's gonna have multiple surgery. We'll see in
twenty twenty seven if we see him at all. Yeah,
he's kind of not been as effective as he was
earlier in his career. I think he is. He thirty
(01:32:22):
two now. So you're saying that was the last time
we ever saw Tyreek Hill play. I don't want to
say that. I will say this, this is the last
time we've ever seen him as as a dynamic NFL player,
for sure. So he'll catch on with somebody, I don't
I don't expect much for him. The run the DeVante
Adams to a team down the road. See DeVante Adams
is a big at least a big red zone target.
(01:32:44):
Tyreek Hill. A lot of his effectiveness was predicated on
his speed, and not his forty yard dash speed, but
his quickness, and I I just don't see it. I mean,
I'm wishing him the best, I guess. I mean, I
hope it works out, or you can say you hope
it doesn't work out because he does have multiple domestic
violence allegations. I mean he hasn't been acquired. Boy, that's
(01:33:04):
at the very very least. But yeah, his knee completely
shredded last night. All Right, We've got at the bottom
of the hour a gut feelings because we push it
back because of the Astros media availability. So if you've
got any sports predictions, Baseball playoffs, Astros, future Texans at
Baltimore with still the undetermined situation regarding Lamar Jackson seven
(01:33:28):
one three two one two five seven aety. That's at
the bottom of the hour. Seven one three two one
two five seven. Aunty Seaman in La wants up with
the Astros. You want to talk about the Astros and
their injury status and how they handle things. We'll do
that next at twelve fourteen on Sports Talk seven ninety.
At one o'clock, we'll play some of the highlights of
the press conference that hopefully many of you heard earlier
today here on Sports Talk seven ninety between Dana Brown
(01:33:49):
and uh Joe A spot up. We've got gut feelings
at the bottom of the hour, and the NFL re
want at one twenty. So I got a nice busy
show for a plus bad Bunny and the girl in
the background screaming about the twenty twenty five I Heart
Music Festival. It's how rude. She was right, she loves it.
We were made, are going to be there, It's already happened.
(01:34:12):
Thanks you you missed. You must have missed me. Miss
must have been a must have been a great show.
Oh it was great. Lots of people there, that's a
high end people there. Uh, let's go to Steve in
Los Angeles, California, twelve twenty two.
Speaker 11 (01:34:25):
Hello Steven, Hey, guys, I appreciate you taking my call,
you know, just listening to a little bit of the
interview and uh, you know, obviously, uh, injuries happened in baseball.
You know, they happened to every team. You know, you
look up and down every most of the teams have
one or two pretty significant injuries that they have to
(01:34:46):
deal with throughout the year. The one the biggest transgression
for me and I wanted to get your guys opinion
on this is the way that they handled, uh, the
return policy for your don and basically had them taking
badding crack this on a fractured hand, which kept him
out in an additional six weeks. Maybe it was even seven.
I lost track at this point. It's especially discouraging when
(01:35:09):
you all, you literally only missed the playoffs by one game,
just one game. I mean, you're telling me that he
could if he had followed the correct procedures to play,
and even if he had dipped into a little bit
more time to come back before pushing him to take
that batting practice, that he couldn't have helped you out
(01:35:30):
in a three or four week span to get you
a run. I mean, that's how important he is to
this team and how much of a significant impact he
can have. And so, uh, that's basically that's really what
bothered me the most about this season is how they
handled that particular injury. So I just want to get
you guys take I'll hang up and listen, and I
(01:35:51):
always appreciate you guys in the show.
Speaker 3 (01:35:53):
Thanks Steven. I I mean, we're not in the medical room.
I don't know, I can't. We don't have artical degrees. Yeah,
we don't know what was looked at. We do know
the result. Those are the result was bad and it
was multiple setbacks. The result was a really horrible issue
with with Kyle Tucker last year. The result was Jake
(01:36:16):
Myers tried to come back too fast and he got hurt.
The result was Estich pretnow was a different hamstring, but
how much of that was compensating for his other one
that he did hurt and was playing back playing on
Who knows? Yeah, and I apologize they're just not going
to give us intelligence on this. But I would say
if there is any seed of doubt organizationally or and
(01:36:39):
or especially within the players, then you cut bait and
move on. And maybe that's not fair to the training staff.
Maybe they did everything right. Maybe they did everything correct,
but the optics are bad, or the athlete just doesn't
listen to it as rules. I think there is mistrust
in the back of the minds of us as far
as fans and pundits, and it wouldn't shock me there's
(01:37:00):
mistrust in the back of the minds of players and management.
And there is no way in the world you are
an active member of the Houston Astros and you go
into that in that training room and you go in
my guy's got me. There's there's just too many players.
There's too many players that have missed too much time
with whether it be severe injuries or minor animals that
(01:37:23):
turn into big things. Well let's do the same thing.
What if you're you're say you're Dana Brown, Matt and
I'm the trainer. I come to you and say, hey,
this guy's got a muscle injury, but he's good to go.
You're gonna be like, are you sure? Are you sure?
You're sure? Because so there's got to be mistrusting Dana
Brown's mind or Joe or Joe Spott's mind. Joe Spott
is getting the clearance to put these guys back out
there and they're getting hurt, and then people are blaming
(01:37:44):
I know idiots are blaming him, but you know what
I'm saying, It does reflect It reflects poorly on everyone
when this continues to happen. So, yeah, I think there
is going to be a change, and there is under
There is machismo to discuss as well. We don't know
to what levels, but there are a lot of athletes
that's true. Whether you or a Houston Astro, or you're
a Denver Nugget or you're a Cincinnati bingle, you're gonna
(01:38:05):
want to play through pain because when you don't play,
you may get paid. But it may ultimately impact your future.
And you guys are an arbitration. You've got guys in
free agency, you've got any one of things. I mean,
you know, you just you have to be honest. And
sometimes the athlete of today, that's in high school, that's
in college, that's they want to play. They don't want
(01:38:26):
to be on the outside because sometimes it takes a
lot longer to get back on the field after an
injury as compared to all the hard work you put
in to get on the field to begin with. And
you've got that competitive edge anyways, if you made it
through high school or whatever, youth and then and then
double a triple A, double A single A to triple
A whatever, and you're a major leaguer, you've got a
competitive edge. You do you you like to compete, and
(01:38:48):
you love to be out there, and you've just got
some kind of whether you call it a screw loose
or whatever in you that you want to be out
there at all costs. Do I think Jordan has learned
from this experience, I would certainly hope so. I think
so hopefully he knows what his hands are feeling like
or when they're swollen up and puffing up and but
even but Jake wider fracture feels like am I reading
(01:39:08):
between the lines? Jake Myers tried to grind it out
and get back out there, maybe when that calf wasn't
one hundred percent. Yeah, and then he came back again,
and then he was at the end of the season,
he was put back on ice. I don't know. I
did he hit the iel like I think you did
it with the left Yeah. I don't want to put
this all on the players, but I'm going to say
the players do own some of this unless they are
(01:39:32):
being given wrong information. Your hand is fine, go out
there and swing. Yeah, we don't see anything. There's nothing wrong.
Go take some asper and we'll see at the batting
cage tomorrow. That could be some of that too. But again,
it's it's it's honestly, it's all conjecture. And I wish
(01:39:52):
I could tell you I had you know, because I'm
the Texans insider. I wish I was the astras insider
on this. But there they've closed the door to the
medical room. They're not letting us in. Yeah, are we
getting uh, we're getting mctagger one last time or no,
not this week? We can know, I think we should
do that when ross, when something happens in terms of
we get coaching change or something like that. All right,
we got gut feelings right now. Would you like to
(01:40:15):
make some gut feelings about the future of the Astros
the medical staff see you later. How did Robert Ford
into the room? Do you think they have him? Called
him we will watch you go. That'd be rude that
way rude. And Dana Brown's like, hey, Robert, get in
(01:40:36):
here real quick. Why don't you tell these guys something.
What do you want to tell him? What's your phrase?
See you letter? I don't know. That's not the way
I want to be fired. I don't want Robert Ford
telling me I'm gone from anything. Seven wod three two
one two five seven dotty seven one three two one
two five seven nine zero. All right, if you've got
(01:40:56):
gut feelings about what you think the Astros are going
to do, let us know seven one three two five
seven ninety listen it up and so appeal. This wasn't
that tommit yo. They got a good dealer. This is
their gut feeling on the Matt Thomas Show. I am
definitely afraid for you to figure out how we did
(01:41:18):
last week is I don't think the results are going
to be particularly good. Hopefully you raised them. What I music?
Going to music? Oh hiding there it is, there are
concrete Okay, the document doesn't lie a little spicy with
Sabbi in my trout. Who dudsn't? Oh wow, you were
(01:41:45):
firing on all cellars man, Oh here we go go ahead.
Astros make playoffs. Yeah, hey, I don't need sound effect.
Speaker 9 (01:41:54):
You back there.
Speaker 3 (01:41:55):
They go, get good and get a buzzer for this. Actually, yeah,
let me make some girls give you somes you of hed.
Cougars beat os U by at least two touchdowns. Damn
damn d Rockets don't pick up a point guard. So far,
so far, so good on that. I have no options?
(01:42:17):
Can I say that they might they'll kick the tires
on something that maybe at the All Star breaks something
like that, or trade deadline. That's kind of a grandiose thing.
Baggies beat Auburn and cover the spread of six and
a half. That's another l they didn't cover. I think
they won by six, right, yes, go look Texans either
(01:42:38):
blow out Titans or Titans money light, nothing in between,
the line won't matter that's correct. That was actually really
on pin. Yeah, Colts win the AFC South. We'll see.
They did lose, though Texans gained the gain on them
and them Jaguars aren't looking terrible. The Jaguars one in
(01:42:59):
San Francisco. ROSSI with pretty healthy, with pretty healthy, wealthy
ish and Trevor Lawren's only overthrowing five people. If the
Texans lose Week four, they're out of the playoffs. Well,
they didn't lose, so we'll see her. Jonathan said, if
the Texans go oh and four, they'll go oh and six,
so we won't see the light of day on that one.
(01:43:21):
They did not lose. I said, Astros make the playoffs.
Said they'd go four and two down the stretch, they
went three and three. I said the Texans would win,
but not cover this six and a half. There was
my confidence level on the squad wrong. And I said
(01:43:43):
him men Thompson will be a good point guard for
the Rockets. Whatever that means, like he's gonna be a
good fit statwise. You're backing that up. Yeah, and there
you go. Those were our gut feelings. Matthew, Okay, nicely done,
nicely done.
Speaker 4 (01:43:59):
This week.
Speaker 3 (01:44:00):
I got Detroit beating Cleveland in the wild card Detroit. Oh,
you're saying that as they're up. No, I was in
it before. We just went behind it all right. Now,
wait a minute, it's just the third inning. Come on, now,
there's the best of three. You would be saying that
if they were down six nothing. Well that that is
actually accurate. I got the Padre's beating the Cubs. That
(01:44:22):
are kind of rooting for that. Okay, Padres over Cubs,
Yankees over the Red Sox, Dodgers over the reds Uh okay,
that's a lot. Sure, I'll go you know what, I'll
pair it all that. That's fine. I think you went
(01:44:43):
all favorites. Yeah, I did you Chuck Thomas? Well that's
finem Well, I can't.
Speaker 1 (01:44:51):
You know what.
Speaker 3 (01:44:51):
I'm gonna have to hold off the Texans Baltimore. I'll
put it this way. If Cooper what's his name, that
Cooper Cup it's Cooper Rush.
Speaker 4 (01:45:00):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (01:45:00):
If Cooper Rush plays, Texans win at Baltimore. If Lamar
Jackson plays, Ravens win over the Texans, Uh okay, Texans
beat Cooper Rush. I don't think Lamar is playing right.
I don't think so. I mean they're being very quiet
(01:45:22):
about it. John Harborough basically said if he could have
come back in the game on Sunday, he would have
regardless of the score. Hmm, Texans beat Cooper Rush. I'm
going with it. Lamar Jackson does not play, that'll be
might got feeling as well. Yeah, when you said one
to three weeks, that sounds about right. I mean, because
(01:45:43):
again it was a it was a thirty. When do
hamstrings just miraculously heal themselves quickly? No, I mean a
lot of. I mean, it depends on how mild it is.
But if you had to come out of the game,
couldn't come back. Yeah, Cougar's Cougar's covered the ten and
a half against or get the Tech win.
Speaker 4 (01:45:57):
What is it?
Speaker 3 (01:45:58):
Cougar's will win by getting to ten and a half.
Cougars they're ten and a half point dogs and ten
and that point dogs. That's the last time I checked.
H how are we feeling? Uh? Cougars plus the points.
A lot of red Raiders in my name, there'll be
a lot of red Raiders and that's Cougar's fault. I
don't care. It's phill the ball, Philip fill the building up.
I don't care. You don't care. You don't want your
(01:46:20):
own fans in the building. I want my fans in
old building. But I'm not gonna beg you if you can't.
If you don't want to go see a foigal team,
that's on you. Wow, I should have been a strike
and a guy just walked. We're affecting playoff games with
bad call focus Ross they did try cleming on the mines.
Are affecting playoff games. Lasco Tigers gosh terrible. So you've
(01:46:41):
aged plus and a half?
Speaker 2 (01:46:42):
All right?
Speaker 3 (01:46:43):
Uh, Texas minus six and a half versus Florida. I'm
gonna stay away no what you know what? I am
the de facto Longhorn fan in this room. As a
stay away from me. You uh, take Texas, give the points.
I'm taking the Horns in Gainesville and general Texas and
the points is not great, but it did work out
for us in Charles. Fine, you want my my actual
(01:47:09):
gut feeling, Texas doesn't cover the six and a half.
What you think it's gonna be that close? I don't
know what you might gut feeling. I'm broken down the roster.
I can't name a Florida Gator outside of DJ lagway.
That's true, and they didn't want to they didn't want
to make announce. It's a gut feeling, just a gut feeling.
All right, very good? What else you got? Changes to
(01:47:37):
texts to Astros training staff? Would you call that training
slash medical staff?
Speaker 8 (01:47:43):
Or how?
Speaker 2 (01:47:44):
How?
Speaker 3 (01:47:45):
Uh? Team doctors don't change? Because that's that's a corporate
tie in. Uh does one or more of the training
staff members of the Astros leave? Put it that way?
Speaker 4 (01:47:58):
It that way?
Speaker 3 (01:48:00):
Training staff and strength and conditioning changes.
Speaker 2 (01:48:04):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (01:48:04):
Yeah, well they could win one hundred games them No
injest again. Also, they get a new MRI machine because
the one they have, the one they have is pretty bad.
Astros avoid dock in a box locations. How about that one?
Was that a good gud feeling? Put my name on
that one? Yeah? Okay, Jonathan, you've been quiet about this.
(01:48:27):
What do you got about there? I want to hear
from you on this one, Matt, because I'm on the fence. Honestly,
go ahead. Oh I hate when you put me on
the fence. No, I think you're over this fence. Hitting
coaches one or both are gone, Thank you, sacrificial lambs.
And then you never talking about this for like six
weeks now, Correa loves Centro. Now that I don't know
(01:48:49):
if Jim Crane is gonna care what Core has. Let
me tell you, Host two loved Alex Brigman. Astro said,
Alex enjoyed time in Boston. Yes, but they're also not
gonna training the hitting coaches are forty million a year
from Boston. That's actually accurate. Yes, okay, one or I
think you're probably right.
Speaker 5 (01:49:09):
Yep, Now you guys took my uh because I also
believe that even if Lamar Jackson is on the Ravens,
they look horrible and I'm not even gonna.
Speaker 3 (01:49:21):
I think that three. I think the Texans can actually
clinch that game and be honestly against Lamar Jackson again,
even with Lamar, You're not that No, just a mood conversation.
Mood conversation, but that's just one you can put put
on business win Ravens regardless. It doesn't matter the quarterback,
(01:49:43):
doesn't It does not matter the quarterback. If they don't
beat Cooper Rush, though they could lose the coup of Rush,
they could actually I think that what was my projected line?
Did I say one and a half or two and
a half. I think you were in that sat in
that range, Joe, trying to see if they have it
still off the board. Oh, and then Vanderbilt upsets out
bella whoa why, whoa?
Speaker 8 (01:50:01):
Whoa?
Speaker 13 (01:50:01):
Whoa?
Speaker 2 (01:50:02):
What?
Speaker 3 (01:50:02):
Okay, what are your what are you going crazy for it?
Back there? I feel the Hexans are favored. I see,
I know ball back here.
Speaker 4 (01:50:11):
Oh, I'm trying to tell.
Speaker 3 (01:50:13):
You look horrible, like they're horrible. I thought they would
be one and a half to two and a half
point dog. I think John Harbaugh uses that as momentum. Yeah,
bulletin board material is gonna rally the troops. That is
so funny. Oh my god, Derrick Henry's right, did we see?
Did not realize that Derek Henry's got his name in
the Wall of Honor and his energy he's with how
many times in the He is a fumbler. Something's going
(01:50:37):
on with over there in Baltimore. I don't know what
it is, but they do not look like they used to.
Can I can I ask forse flowers are a big
game this week? Just asking for a friend. Oh my gosh, Nomber,
you're four and oh, shut your mouth. I've got I've
got Malik Neighbors dead, Mike Evans out, and and I
also have he I was like, oh, I'm good at
receiver with Milik Neighbors and Mike Evans, I'll get rashier
(01:51:00):
for late season death down three receivers. So I don't
want to hear it.
Speaker 5 (01:51:06):
Okay, it's not my year anything else, boys and arts Manning.
This is his only game, I think, to prove that
he can actually compete in the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (01:51:18):
You're saying this is a make or break game for him. No,
I really believe that's it. I have O you next week.
But you and Jen I hear with Kevin Durant to
say about it.
Speaker 4 (01:51:24):
That's why.
Speaker 3 (01:51:25):
Yeah, but sec can believe. I believe if Kevin Durant's
got it is back, why can't America? Because he's a
Longhorn homer. And he also said one dash one did
he not remember? First of all he did? That doesn't
make this If he doesn't do what it doesn't make
him a good college football analysts maybe one of the
greatest players over the NBA. I don't know about it.
Analysts college football acumen. All right, Seth and Josh wants
(01:51:48):
to get to on the phones. We'll get to you next,
if any of you got gut feelings behind those two
gentlemen seven to one three two one two five seven
ninety seven one three, two, one two five seven twelve
forty three. It's a Matt Thomas show, Ross, and this
is sports Talk seven ninety Let's go on the first seven.
(01:52:08):
Remember Ross on gut feelings. If you get them right,
you call us back, and you brag. If you get
them wrong, we a we largely forget about them unless
they're absolutely absurd. Oh, I got an interesting one that
we can bring up. Yeah, gut feelings, Yeah, astros in Field,
how we feeling? This is a purely gut du Bond's
(01:52:30):
not back? Okay? Who's your third basement opening day? Carlos Korea?
Who's your shortstop opening day? Jeremy Paine? You who's your
second basement opening day? Jose L two Bay? Who's your
first basement opening day? Why are you making me wiggle
(01:52:55):
like this? It feels like that could be a clip.
Oh oh, I feel like there's two candidates. Well clear,
there's only two candidates. Why I'm Woodland a feeling, gut
(01:53:15):
feeling Christian Walker, but please don't hold me to this.
And then what Jordon, are you gonna cop out with
ord on and left and east side d Hing seven
one three two one two five seven ninety Seth on
the Matt Thomas Jold Ross Seth was in your gut
this week.
Speaker 23 (01:53:35):
Hey guys, I'm gonna go throw two of them matcha
first one regarding the medical stuff for the hitting coaches.
By the time the World Series is over, I say
one of those groups, one of those people is not
here anymore.
Speaker 3 (01:53:47):
I can't tell you which one.
Speaker 23 (01:53:48):
And my world theories prediction, I'm going Brewers and Blue Jays.
Speaker 3 (01:53:55):
Brewers in Blue Jays. I'm sure the TV networks are
thrilled to hear that. Oh that that might be. They
may have put that on like on uh on U
or something. It's a Fox game, so yeah, they're putting
on an f S two behind bowling, Oh Milwaukee Toronto.
(01:54:17):
Their dream matchup would be Yankees Dodgers. Yeah, like they
got last year and it did very well for the
missed no surprise. Mm hmm. What would be the probably
Brewers Guardians? I know anything involving Toronto kills him really
absolutely so. Toront would be worse in Cleveland because you
(01:54:38):
don't even get it you don't get a measured home market. Yeah,
Toronto has some stars. At least please name people in
in Houston and Dallas. Can the name Three Blue Jays,
George Springer, everybody can name? Yeah, uh yeah, Boba Shet
he's supposed to come back feedo June on a Beatle
(01:55:03):
World Series zero and he's on a recorded line. Maybe not.
I mean's Alejandro Kirk?
Speaker 4 (01:55:11):
Are you done?
Speaker 3 (01:55:12):
Kevin Gossman, you're you're you're backing me up on this actually,
and I thank you for that. Jimmy and Tombaw. Jimmy,
what's in your gut? This week?
Speaker 9 (01:55:21):
I got too little Red Billy series.
Speaker 17 (01:55:25):
And then the main reason I called my biggest gut
feeling is that the Cougars don't win another.
Speaker 12 (01:55:30):
Game for the rest of the year.
Speaker 3 (01:55:32):
Shut your bumb ass up, mane. They are gonna win
a bunch of We got Oklahoma State coming up in
two weeks. West Virginia is terrible, Arizona's not good.
Speaker 4 (01:55:42):
Well, what are you talking?
Speaker 3 (01:55:43):
That's ridiculous Against State wasn't good either. We're going bowling
baby time.
Speaker 4 (01:55:47):
What's my bowl?
Speaker 3 (01:55:47):
We don't go to Liberty, No, We're gonna go to Birmingham.
Worst case, we're gonna be to the twelve Sea. You
could be the eleven Seas Salad Stop. That's terrible. I
think the salad ball had defunct. Unfortunately it is. It
was the Garden State Bowl. There was no weed either.
(01:56:08):
One right a week that's going gone to the Freedom
Bowls gone. There's a bunch of balls. What blue Bonny Bells,
the imprisoned bawl? What happened to the Freedom Bowl? The
Fascism Bowl? Me home arrest ball, statue, limitations ball? Oh no,
(01:56:30):
I know that's not good. All right, let's go to
uh Josh on seven ninety and Josh at twelve fifty three. Josh,
good afternoon. Odi.
Speaker 2 (01:56:40):
I have to agree with Seth, with the Brewers and
Blue Jays.
Speaker 24 (01:56:43):
I hope Spinger gets himself another ring, but uh, I
will say.
Speaker 2 (01:56:47):
My gut feeling is that Walker proves to us why we.
Speaker 11 (01:56:52):
Actually signed him next year.
Speaker 24 (01:56:54):
I think he's gonna have a.
Speaker 4 (01:56:56):
Year.
Speaker 3 (01:56:57):
Okay.
Speaker 24 (01:56:58):
He started to beat up a little of it's towards
the end a little too late, but I think he's
gonna he's gonna approve all the haters out there why
we actually signed him.
Speaker 3 (01:57:09):
Okay, we'll take I'll take you up on that. Thank
you for the phone call. Now, the ending numbers, I
don't really count. The last game is that was meaningless?
What do you mean he's blasting home runs? By the way,
has finished tied for third home runs on the astros.
All right, we got a little bit of breaking news here.
(01:57:30):
Oh okay, one sounder, let's do one more. Oh okay.
Brian Whacker, who writes for the NF for the Baltimore Sun,
says Lamar Jackson likely to miss Sunday's game with the
hamstring injury two sources two to three weeks. I think
he said, yeah, all right, Whackers usually on top.
Speaker 4 (01:57:54):
Of it.
Speaker 3 (01:57:57):
As compared to not being on top of it. Yeah,
you knew who Brian Whacker is. What do you mean,
Baltimore Son Son? Who do you replace Fred Flintstone? No,
Aaron Wilson.
Speaker 4 (01:58:09):
Duh?
Speaker 3 (01:58:11):
How do you know how your Baltimore Sun people down?
I didn't get the lineage. I'm sorry. Christian Walker final
numbers ops plus of ninety seven, so that's close to
average he was. I mean his performance this year was
slightly below average, but not horritt mean, what in Jose
Bray you are horrific. Twenty seven homers he hit twenty
(01:58:32):
sixth the year before. Ballpark easier to hit here than
it would be in Phoenix, so a little bit. His
ops plus was one twenty last year, yes, because ops
plus does factor ballpark. I mean his season was okay,
but he was supposed to be the solid, wake up
(01:58:52):
hit you a base, knock a home run once every
two or three days. Maybe that was unfair. Maybe that
maybe we we were two in love with watching the
YouTube videos of him hitting home runs for Arizona and
didn't look at the numbers of zero for fours, two
for elevens. I mean when he slumped, he really slumped.
Does that make sense? And it's that too simplest think
(01:59:13):
of a term. Well, his strikeout rate went in three years,
it's gone from nineteen percent to twenty four percent to
twenty seven point seven percent this year. That's bad. So
more than once every every four times he's striking out,
which means he's not moving base runners over under any
service rock rate going from ten percent to six point
three that's its significant. I always ask you this, Can
you give me his runners in scoring position, batting average? Yeah,
(01:59:36):
I think it was like Okay, his overall he was
two thirty eight, and I think he was around there. Generally,
year to year there's a lot of noise and risk.
I know people don't want to hear that, but generally
career numbers and year long long numbers are pretty close
to what risk what they are risk. All right, last
gut feeling, go ahead, and you said, oh, you want
to define it if you can, I mean, yeah, two
(01:59:58):
thirty eight. He hit two thirty eight. Overall you get
two thirty eight, So he really was no different with
guys on base or guys by himself slightly better seven
thirty seven ops on with RISP and seven nineteen overall
you were hoping to get. You were hoping for league average,
what seven fifty seven sixty somewhere you wanted him closer
to that number. And as ops blood and as ops
(02:00:19):
they do leverage too. But I hold on, I lost
that you talk. They were for me. There was just
too many times this year, I guess not too many.
There were more than I wanted to see the opportunity
to be the hero and was unable to be the hero.
But you can said about a lot of guys in
the offense hoseiow two big said that, But you said that,
y DZ. You said a lot of guys low leverage
(02:00:40):
seven eighty two. Ops. Oh, this is gonna back up
my point, isn't it high leverage five eighty one?
Speaker 4 (02:00:46):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (02:00:47):
So yeah, so I wasn't an imagining thing. Also, high
leverage generally means close and late you're playing, You're going
up against better relievers and there's more pressure. Yeah, let's
get to Ray before we get to closing out the
gut feelings. Ray good after to Dune.
Speaker 25 (02:01:02):
Ray Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you're disagree to the last caller,
can you hear me?
Speaker 4 (02:01:10):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (02:01:10):
Go ahead, go ahead, I.
Speaker 25 (02:01:12):
Disagree with him about Christian walk back to the bench
and also carry me back to the bench.
Speaker 4 (02:01:18):
Victor carried me back.
Speaker 25 (02:01:19):
To the bench, and Christian walked back to the bench.
They're gonna be God, They're gonna bumbles and disappear.
Speaker 3 (02:01:25):
They are for a backup Caedger.
Speaker 25 (02:01:29):
My last one is I have a gut feeling that
Matt Thomas is going to be called in Game one
of the Western Conference Finals for the Houston Rockets.
Speaker 3 (02:01:38):
That's what I'm talking about. Let's go. I just felt
the tiredness in my eyes hearing that. But I'm why
you're tired. Oh I know why I gotta do a
lot of postgames. Well, let me take playing too. We're
gonna we're gonna spread it out. When I miss it, No,
I I miss it.
Speaker 4 (02:01:54):
I miss it.
Speaker 3 (02:01:55):
I missed doing post games didn't matter. We only do.
I mean, I did him this year, but it was tame.
Seven was terrible. Yeah, and I took two hours of calls.
Everybody crying and we're all sad. But yeah, thanks, my
pain is hilarious. Everybody you were here too, It was, yeah,
somebody tell you something. Everybody hurts sometimes. John then yeah,
(02:02:19):
it took two hours of trade, Jayen Green talk. Then
he got traded. We wouldn't back off of that. I
mean people would ask us, is he untouchable? We said no. Frankly,
it felt like to me, now that we look back
on it, it was Outpia. It was untouchable. I don't
think anybody was for a particularly a honest deal. But
(02:02:40):
outside of that, yes, virtually untouchable. Virtually things can certainly change,
all right. That is got feelings game one Western fount
when no one am I gonna be doing it in
Houston somewhere else, Houston, Texas, baby, probably Oklahoma City. Now
we need to we'll do that. NBA predictions Now, mine
will be completely biased, and I won't hide that mm
(02:03:00):
hm because I'm not going to root for Dallas to
win the West somebody like, oh I got that one. Now,
I don't want that. Oh hell no, it's okay. I
will call it as I see it. I will not
call it as I see it. I will call it
as I want it. Thunders are heavy thunder or heavy favorite.
Right now, I think I can tell you who the
Western Finals are going to be right now. Okay, So
(02:03:22):
you're not worried about fvv No or Denver. Well, maybe
the Rockets are playing the Nuggets in the finals Western Finals.
That's true. Let me tell you right now. I don't
want to lock in a gut feeling or next week
or tomorrow or next next week, because it's time to
take for it. One o'clock on Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 1 (02:03:42):
Ninety's The Matt Thommas Show with.
Speaker 3 (02:03:46):
Ross what oh five on Sports Talk seven ninety, we
start the final hour of the show with word The
Detroit Tigers lead the Cleveland Indians in the best of
three walled card series are in the bottom of the
fourth the Guardians of Runner at first one nothing. Lse
(02:04:08):
Robero is out the plate for the Cleveland Guardfields. So
here's the thing. The Astros would have won the West,
they would be the home to the game with This
game would have been in Houston, Texas. Today, we would
have been the ballpark and say, we're in this studio
watching these two Jabronis teams play. That's okay. I'm not
(02:04:30):
happy about it. I'm not happy about it, but it
is what it is.
Speaker 10 (02:04:32):
Matt.
Speaker 3 (02:04:33):
I want to be there at the future is now
what you're just making things up. I think maybe one
person got that references Jonathan's not laughing back there for
some reasons before this time. Yeah, I didn't get that
at all. All Right, Rossie, we had a press conference
at Dynkin Park earlier today. Let's run through some of
(02:04:56):
what we heard. Uh yes, so many different things addres
us and a lot of the big topics of course,
about the training staff, about the team and their offense.
So let's go and start off with Dana Brown about
addressing the training staff in the off season.
Speaker 13 (02:05:12):
Look, I think this is an industry wide issue with
the injury injuries, and you know, but like everything else,
we're gonna you know, take a look at you know,
every one of our departments, right and so just to
make sure that we're not missing anything. But I think
we have these industries. The injuries are industry wide, and
(02:05:34):
there's you know, there's guys throwing harder, there's guys chasing spin.
I don't think there's a magic bullet too, why there's
so many injuries. I know we were affected big time
from it, and I think it cost us, you know,
you know, the postseason because of all the injuries. You know,
one I figured week two or three more wins with
(02:05:56):
if we had all of our guys.
Speaker 4 (02:05:58):
But I don't think there's a magic bullet, you know.
Speaker 13 (02:06:01):
And as for just you know, taking a look at this,
we'll take a look at every department, you know, in
baseball operations.
Speaker 3 (02:06:10):
So clearly he does not want to throw the medical
staff under the bus at least yet.
Speaker 2 (02:06:16):
M hm.
Speaker 3 (02:06:19):
Yes, industry wide problem. I mean, yeah, we we talked
about what the Dodgers had a bunch of pitching injuries,
the Diamondbacks had a bunch of pitching injuries. We can
look around, I mean, there's a lot of teams having
let me, let me give you this, what if he
would have said the following, and this could be perhaps
too harsh. So if it is too harsh thinking about
how the organization defends its organization, question was asked, are
(02:06:44):
you gonna look at your training staff?
Speaker 4 (02:06:46):
Yeah, we are.
Speaker 3 (02:06:48):
We're very disappointed in the amount of injuries that this
or we had and the recuperation time was a lot
longer than we wanted it to be. Is this because
of our players? Is it because of our training staff?
Is it because of just the nature of the business.
But yeah, we're concerned. That would have been probably a
(02:07:09):
little bit more assertive towards we need to do a
deep dive. Or was he just kind of broad brushing
the whole industry and said, yeah, it's not us, it's
more of the sport. I think it's broad brushing, And
I also think that's the way that Dana is going
to go about this. That's going to be his His
mo is to defend the organization and then at least outwardly,
(02:07:31):
at least in this setting, and then the micro maybe
behind closed doors. I'm sure there's some tough evaluation going
down and guys trying to figure out what and try
to get to the bottom of this. I think that's
difficult for anybody. For Dana Brown doesn't know for sure.
I mean, look, he's a baseball guy. He's supposed to
be out there scouting and making picks and building a roster.
And it feels like, you know what, kind of didn't
(02:07:53):
we joke about it, like at some point throughout the season, like, Joe,
do you feel like you're getting a medical degree this year?
Because you have to learn so much about all these
different injuries too, calves, hands, hamstrings, elbows, shoulders. I mean,
it's everything. And how about this. Are you gonna go
get an independent set of doctors to come in here
and look at your records?
Speaker 4 (02:08:14):
What do you do that?
Speaker 3 (02:08:16):
Don't guess? Here's the thing. These teams are tied to hospitals,
and those doctors are not gonna throw their fellow fellow
doctors under the bus. And some of those hospitals spend
sponsorship dollars, not some, they all do. Every every sports
team is attached to a medical care group and they
and as part of that, you get the doctors from
that medical group. It ain't easy to just say fire everybody.
(02:08:37):
It's just not that easy. It'd be interesting. I'm I'm
very curious to see what happens.
Speaker 2 (02:08:46):
Now.
Speaker 3 (02:08:47):
You can't fire people just because your fan base wants
them to. But the fan base needs to know that
you're doing everything within your power to prove that everything
that happened injury wise was completely a fluke. But it
was the injuries happened, and our medical staff did everything
(02:09:08):
in their power to try to get those guys to
recuperate as quickly as they could. It is interesting to
try to first of all, as we know, winning cures everything,
but the Astros didn't win this year, so you want
to keep fans happy, but you also don't want you
don't want to run an organization based on fan opinion.
That'd be ridiculous. You can't have a bad idea, no,
because that's the case. You if every manager and every
(02:09:29):
coach fire and every player traded, we just can't do
it all, right, continue on a right Joe Spota also
asked about his staff and if everyone will be back.
Speaker 12 (02:09:39):
Season ended forty eight hours ago, and we are really
trying to have some conversation and see how we're going
to move forward. So that's where we that's where we
at right now.
Speaker 3 (02:09:50):
Okay, so it sounds like a ringing endorsement for anybody,
and also asked about improving offensively for the Astros because
we know there's a lot of struggles there.
Speaker 12 (02:10:01):
Yes, I think there is areas, you know, offense that
where we can improve on. You know, I think throughout
the year we made some adjustments and we got better
in center areas. But that's I think that's an area
that we as an organization need to look into. How
can we have belle quality of bats? How can we
improve on getting on base more frequently and and and
(02:10:23):
be better throughout the entire season.
Speaker 3 (02:10:28):
Better at bats, get guys on base, more good generic stuff.
You're not going to solve something in front of a
podium with a bunch of reporters. I mean, look off
seasons are six months for a reason. He will first
deep dive into his organization. Then he's gonna if he's
(02:10:50):
gonna make any changes, he's gonna have to go find people.
And you gotta again the players. You've talked about this before.
The players do feel comfort zone with these guys, and
so my guess is Carlos Krale will say, you know
they will go to if they make a change their
hitter hittings. Definitely say anybody in that Twins staff worthy
of bringing down here to do something. You know, he
was there for a long period of time. But yeah,
(02:11:10):
Alex Cintron to believe Carlo's career. Those guys are real.
They they text and talked like throughout the season, even
when he was with the Twins. Absolutely, they're very tight. Yeah,
but it's Carlos Kreas call.
Speaker 2 (02:11:21):
No. No.
Speaker 3 (02:11:22):
The players can make their suggestions, but it's ultimately it
should be the manager in the general manager's call. Anything else. Yeah,
one more from Danta Brown will stick well, stick with
the offense.
Speaker 4 (02:11:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (02:11:31):
Part of it is as I said, Look, you know
with some of our guys being out, I think that
affected you know us, I think we you know, when
Perettis went down, we started seeing less pitches, pitches per
at bat, and so look, I think that's going to
be a big focus, you know for us, that you
got to hunt your pitch. Stick with hunting your pitch
and get to more to strike counts because you're making
(02:11:55):
the pitcher work a little bit harder. And I think
the fact that we chase a little bit early, it's
just I think our guys were pressing a little bit
because we had guys missing in the lineup and we
tried to do too much.
Speaker 3 (02:12:08):
I'd say the same thing. I mean, this team did
press it. Yeah, it was not It was a lot
of bad swing and miss. It was a lot. It
was a lot of guys trying to be the heroes. Yeah,
and it wasn't because they weren't bunning enough, or wasn't
because they were taking a picture right direction. We took
a collar and said they needed a bunch more to
score more runs. But they also the Astros don't play
smart baseball, Matt, do you know the the two teams
(02:12:30):
that led baseball and runs per game weren't the Yankees
and the Dodgers? And they also smacked more home runs.
Anybody was going to say, do you know the two
teams who led the major leagues at home run? I
do those home run encounters, And yes we do, the
Yankees and the Dodgers.
Speaker 12 (02:12:48):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (02:12:49):
Anyways, one fourteen of the Matt Thomas showd Ross We've

(02:13:11):
bunt down the first baseline. Scooble fields it underhand toss
with his glove for the out number three. Why is
he bunting? There? Bunting sucks morons, It just does. Why
are you bunting? Why are you bunting? Catching him off guard?
ROSSI We'll cut him off guard to the third out,
(02:13:33):
to the third out. And he was so cocky you
he pitched the he threw the ball from his met Well,
I guess I would try to bunt versus Schoobley too, now,
like I'm getting you know what I would do if
I was if I was going against Sark, sculling through
my entire body in front of home plate and hope
them party can't catch that. One fourteen to the Tapas

(02:14:49):
It is, yes, go ahead, I say.
Speaker 8 (02:14:51):
There's a sporting event that happens in Houston once a year,
that is I think it's arts tomorrow at Bogie's. It's
the seniors one Pocket Tournament.
Speaker 3 (02:15:07):
Okay, have you ever heard of it?
Speaker 8 (02:15:10):
And all the Filipinos people from all over the world
come to play in it once a year.
Speaker 3 (02:15:17):
All right.
Speaker 8 (02:15:20):
I've been playing pool for just under sixty five years.
I've hardly ever had a real j my entire life.
I played with all these people.
Speaker 3 (02:15:29):
Do you ever play with Minnesota Fats?
Speaker 8 (02:15:32):
I knew Minnesota Fats. He was just a flabbergaster.
Speaker 3 (02:15:36):
He was a flatbergaster. Wait a minute, So he's fat
and a Flabbergaster is Ethan Ray is going to be there.
Speaker 8 (02:15:42):
I knew Mosconi really well. I know Ephron, I know,
I know all the you know, the Filipinos. I took
care of the guy that played in the Color of Money,
the world's best money player. Yeah, I know all these people.
All right, I played head up. I've been here in
(02:16:04):
Houston since nineteen ninety four. All right, nobody in Houston, Texas,
the United States, and possibly this universe had the balls
even interview me. To this day, I'm what you would
call the invisible man. You know how none of these channels,
(02:16:27):
you know, political channels, all of them, do they ever
talk about what the deep state really is. Yeah, well
I got victimized big time by them people.
Speaker 3 (02:16:38):
Wow, that's not nice. I hate to hear that.
Speaker 8 (02:16:41):
I had a thousand people try to make me a
suicidal mass murder for fun. They weren't after me, they
were just messing with me. And I knew the waiter
that was running around when Nicole and Ron Goldman, you know,
the O. J. Simpson. Yes, you know what that what
(02:17:03):
really was that was the biggest waged dog in the
history of civilization. That's where you take an incident and
you blow it way out of proportion.
Speaker 3 (02:17:13):
So two people do hold hold on? You do Ron Goldman?
Did you know Ron Goldman?
Speaker 6 (02:17:19):
No?
Speaker 8 (02:17:19):
I knew the guy that was a waiter that worked
part time with Ron Goldman, that played pool. He went
out of his way to let me know he was
messing with me. He got murdered the same way they
got murdered, only Okay was already in jail.
Speaker 3 (02:17:36):
Let's go back to Let's go back to the pool game.
Do are you more of a stripes guy or a
solid guy?
Speaker 8 (02:17:44):
I told you, I'm the invisible man. I'm blacklisted. Buy
everything I'm telling you a story that's worth at least
twenty million dollars.
Speaker 3 (02:17:53):
Just just just yeah, really, what if I got Netflix
to do a story about your life? Would you be
up that?
Speaker 2 (02:18:01):
Sure?
Speaker 8 (02:18:03):
You know what was in the media. You know what
was in the media for the first three days surrounding
the murder and the Bronco incident that never got mentioned
again or pursued.
Speaker 3 (02:18:15):
The rocket rocket in the NBA finals. Are you Kato
Klein's grandfather?
Speaker 2 (02:18:20):
You know where I was.
Speaker 8 (02:18:21):
I was in a pool tournament and when I walked
into the club that this was in Anaheim. You know
they're having a pool tournament, and these two guys that
were about six foot one walked up to meet Chuck
when and they going, hey, dude, you've been here before.
How you doing, Billy?
Speaker 3 (02:18:38):
Have you heard have you heard my billion bill? Have
you heard my story about when I was in a
pool hall once? And what one long time ago?
Speaker 8 (02:18:46):
Well, what about it.
Speaker 3 (02:18:47):
I was at Slick Willies and I was only eighteen.
I shouldn't have been there because I was drinking, okay,
and my buddy Chuck took a pool cube and tapped
a girl on her ass and he's like, I'm going
to do this, and so he did it, and the
guy the boyfriend turned around and started to try to
beat up my friend. I took a pool cube and
hit the guy in your back queue and it hit
him in the back of the head with it. And
(02:19:09):
then the guy, the bartender, it's sick. Well he's rang
the bell and said call the police, call the police,
and fat Me and my buddy Chuck ran out of
Slick wool Is as fast as humanly possible because I
was eighteen years old. It shouldn't have been drinking.
Speaker 8 (02:19:21):
That sounds like a rock and roll song to me. Listen, man,
I've been to I've been to a lot of rodeos,
so you know what was in the media.
Speaker 3 (02:19:34):
I've been in the rodeo since why Nona has been there.
That's been a long time because I'm in the rodeo.
You go to a lot of prison prison rodeos or
regular rodeo. You know, the writer was in the rodeo.
No I know to jud Okay, sorry, go ahead. What
rodeos are you going to? William? Is this a metaphor
for something?
Speaker 8 (02:19:49):
Yeah, it's a big metaphor. You know, when to get
into this situation that's really u a little bit over
your head?
Speaker 3 (02:19:56):
What's the craziest situation you've ever been in?
Speaker 8 (02:20:00):
I don't know. I've had guns in my head with
bikers stomping me in the middle of nowhere out in
a state a state park in Michigan where they they
closed that state park for two years behind because three
people got murdered. I rolled under some pine trees and
well they didn't want.
Speaker 3 (02:20:21):
To follow me.
Speaker 8 (02:20:22):
But anyway, what were.
Speaker 3 (02:20:23):
You doing at the state park? You're just trying to camp?
Were you making someores?
Speaker 1 (02:20:29):
We were?
Speaker 14 (02:20:30):
We were.
Speaker 8 (02:20:32):
We got a little bit too both and that's gonna happen.
We got When we got there, there were all these
bikers walking around, bear chested with their arms lengked, uh,
marching around by the by the bathrooms. And we went
up in the hills and then we decided to go
hit some campfires and say hi to people. And when
the dust cleared, we were surrounded by bikers.
Speaker 3 (02:20:55):
You ever seen a grown man naked?
Speaker 2 (02:20:59):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (02:21:00):
Uh?
Speaker 8 (02:21:01):
You mean like when you were in high school and
you were, you know, playing football and all that stuff.
Speaker 3 (02:21:06):
Yeah, that seems to mean or you could be in
your middle ages. I don't care. I'm just curious.
Speaker 7 (02:21:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (02:21:12):
Well, I don't even know why you're going to ask
a question like that. I don't care. That's not my vocation.
Speaker 3 (02:21:20):
That sounds like a yes.
Speaker 8 (02:21:21):
I do want to know what was in the media
for the first three days that never got mentioned again
or pursued.
Speaker 3 (02:21:31):
People.
Speaker 8 (02:21:32):
Yes, they were talking about the group sex parties, the
hidden video cameras, and they organized crime people. Those are
the people that were messing with me big time. Only
I knew what they were doing, and I was making
fun of them for being a bunch of low life idiots.
O J didn't know what they was all.
Speaker 3 (02:21:51):
About called the game, So now you're with it. So
OJ didn't murder anybody. It was just a big cover
up story for underground sex pol.
Speaker 8 (02:22:00):
The cover up wasn't about whether O Jay did it
or not. The cover up was about why in the
world did it even happen in the first place.
Speaker 9 (02:22:08):
Do you know a.
Speaker 8 (02:22:09):
Million people in this country got involved with the sex
caub portal thing on the internet and a bunch of
them got in bob with stalking people that happened to
wander under their covet. I wandered into the queen that
works for the federal government, that became the highest paid
person in porography at the time.
Speaker 3 (02:22:30):
And we're going to wrap this up.
Speaker 4 (02:22:32):
You know.
Speaker 3 (02:22:33):
I am against group sex parties. Just want to let
you know that. Okay, this stage, this show is not endorse.
Speaker 8 (02:22:38):
Are you standing against them? Does that mean you were involved?
Speaker 3 (02:22:42):
No, I'm just saying I'm against I I am Matt Thomas,
a responsible citizen of this community. I'm against group sex party.
So were you at the party?
Speaker 8 (02:22:50):
You know about the dealers so they could send me
to prison. I went to the FBI before I left
Southern California. They didn't even know what I was talking about.
Speaker 3 (02:23:01):
I know, I clearly understand, and William, we have to
we have to go on that.
Speaker 9 (02:23:05):
We just have to go.
Speaker 3 (02:23:06):
Oh no, that could have gone for ten more minutes.
I know it could have, but we have to get
to the century. No, it doesn't matter that Tyreek Hills
fell apart. But people are looking here. What William asked,
the people are looking for sports. Oh man, you're just
let you just let a pot of gold slip through
our fingers. He went seven minutes.
Speaker 1 (02:23:27):
More.
Speaker 3 (02:23:27):
I know you could have. I know you, but that
was incredible. So let me okay, let me just preface one.
All the time we're gonna do. That's all time, met Thomas.
William was calling to ask Jonathan where he could catch
the Detroit Cleveland game on radio. And you and I
(02:23:49):
were going to spoof us calling the game. Okay, That's
why I asked Jonathan to have some music at baseball
ready and have some sound effects and whatnot, because that's
where I thought he was going. He went in a
completely different direction that, William, you're welcome to call anytime. William,
you are welcome to call, especially in the summer months.
(02:24:09):
Things aren't nearly as He's a pool shark and he
uncovered a disturbing sex ring that was covered up by
the OJ murder. Are you pro against group sex parties?
I mean as everybody's consenting adults, and I'm pro going
for it. I don't care. My name is Paul. This
is between y'all, all right, I do whatever y'all want
in your own time, as long as you're you know,
(02:24:29):
everybody's a consenting adult. He didn't think my story about
me hitting the guy with the pool cube was very impressive.
He wasn't impressed because he got he got beat up
by some lathered up bikers. That's true. I never got
beat up. I ran. I ran like a girl too,
s like well as I'm sorry I had to do it.
That's location West Timer, Montrest, Yeah, all of them, all
Montross and West Tim. I've been there. I've been drunk
(02:24:52):
there multiple time. You of age, miss, I wasn't. I
did not have a sip of alcohol till I was
twenty one. Matt, and I'm also saying this A chemists
is surprised some of you, but I rotated between slick
wood Is in Caligula between the ages of eighteen and nineteen. Now,
I told you I told you Jonathan Matt was a
rabble rouser back in his younger days. You're seeing that
(02:25:12):
one of his stories is no story, No no, no, no.
Matt seventeen to twenty one was something else. Thank god
I matured after that. No where where? All right? Uh
NFL rewind is up next? Okay, I dare you to
top that.
Speaker 4 (02:25:31):
We can't.
Speaker 3 (02:25:32):
I won't all right one thirty two on sports You
won't hear that call on the eighteen Sports Talk seven ninety.
I would like to see sports RV Rossfield real top
(02:25:54):
Williams call in this week's edition of the NFL Rewind.
It's not even gonna happen. It's just it's just like
asking Kaylen to Boord to top Nick Saban. It's not
gonna happen. Get your expectation. A nice cross reference. I
was not expecting an Alabama Rando sec reference on that,
but nicely done by you. Oh man, that was all
(02:26:16):
we I mean, how many tweets did we get off
of that? A few? Well, we can't talk about Let's
talk about the Texans opponent.
Speaker 22 (02:26:22):
Man.
Speaker 3 (02:26:23):
As you know, the Texans get the victory this weekend,
the first of the year against the Tennessee Titans. Lamar
Jackson feared out for at least two to three weeks
now is being said by that dude from the Baltimore Sun,
the Whacker, as he is probably gonna be unavailable for
the game against the Texans. Vegas thinks that as well.
(02:26:44):
They now have the Texans as two and a half
point favorites. Hamstring injury for Lamar Jackson. Also of note
for the Ravens Pro Bowl defensive tackle non beat Nandi
Matabuque is going to miss the rest of the season
with a neck injury, so he is out. And we
also know Marlon Humphrey, one of their good cornerbacks, is
supposed to be out with Rokwan Smith and other offensive
(02:27:09):
tackle Ronnie Stanley hurt as well. So Ravens are banged up.
Texans might be catching them at the right time as
they are two and a half point road favorites. We
were talking about this team being oh and four Charles.
I'm gonna tell you right now, I'd be my money
(02:27:29):
lining the Ravens if we were in Lake Charles. That's
just my honest I know. I'm battle Red Ross and
I'm gonna be rooting for him and I'm I'm gonna
be cousin discussed all right. All right, if I'm at
the betting window, the jersey comes off and the pie
and the bank account opens up exactly. But I hope
put it this way, Let's not even think about this
(02:27:51):
game until Friday, because the line could certainly fluctuate. Potector
could and we all chalked it up as an l.
But the Ravens are banged up, so it'd be a
nice opportunity for the Texans to get a victory this
weekend in Baltimore at the moment total forty and a
half Texans minus two point five in that one. Elsewhere
(02:28:13):
in the NFL this weekend, Man, there was a big
breakout game in losing under center to hand off off
left guard ask A Jenny stutters Hall, and he's got
the say of the near shide. Jenny the thirty breaks at.
Speaker 4 (02:28:27):
Tackle twenty Jenny Gold.
Speaker 8 (02:28:32):
Jess goodbye, asting genty a sixty four yard touchdown.
Speaker 11 (02:28:38):
And for the first time in.
Speaker 3 (02:28:40):
His Raiders career, he breaks one off to the Eisode
twenty one carries one hundred and thirty eight yards for
ashing gent as the march towards one thousand continues, I
should said twelve hundred. By the way, he also got
a couple of catches. Two catches, two targets, two touchdowns,
so a three touchdown breakout game for Ashton gentlemen. They
(02:29:03):
still lost, and they lost to the Chicago Bears. We're
actually looking pretty solid. Two and two at least. I mean,
that's got to be if you're a Bears fan, you
gotta be happy with you. Are you kidding me? Gino Smith?
By the way, a lot of people talking about the
interception machine Seahawks making a big mistake getting rid of him.
Six touchdowns, seven picks so far for a guy who's
(02:29:26):
had a really interesting career. First round about got a star,
big money, and then got traded. Yeah, second round pick.
I'm sorry. With the Jets starting to hit, remember they
were like, oh my gosh, he could be the next
big thing. Then he bounced around. Then he was good
with Seattle. Now with Las Vegas. Weird, wild stuff going
on with Gino Smith, all right. Matt saliz Gardner also
(02:29:49):
in the news now, oh geez for the New York
at Jets politics. He was penalized multiple times in the
twenty seven to twenty one loss to the Miami Dolphins,
including a crew pass interference. He said, quote He's personally
frustrated second straight week he was flagged for past interference.
(02:30:10):
He said, he is being targeted by officials. Man, I
totally agree. The best cornerback in the game is being
unfairly treated by the officials. I watch football all the time,
and I just feel like, I don't know if this
is wrong to say, but I think I get called
for more stuff based off of us not winning. I
watched these winning programs, there'd be some egregious things and
(02:30:31):
it don't get called. They're letting the players play. So
a Sauce Gardner being unfairly targeted because the Jets suck. Yes,
and it's an outrage and I'm sorry that you're having
to go through that. Sauce. Thomas Sports Enterprises remains firmly
behind you. Also, by the way, I forgot to mention
(02:30:52):
Ashton Genty. Could his success be owed to the fact
that he went back to his Mike Meyer's Halloween stance
in the backfield where he just stands there aloof waiting
for the ball. Why are you that at the offensive
line helped? Maybe they could have been better. Also, breaking
a sixty four yarder helps the helps the yards per carry. Matthew,
hope it doesn't sprain his need this week.
Speaker 4 (02:31:14):
You're so bad.
Speaker 3 (02:31:16):
This is horrible. How do you look yourself in the mirror?
Matt weekdays tend to two?
Speaker 4 (02:31:21):
All right?
Speaker 3 (02:31:21):
One last thing for the NFL. We mentioned this of
the news at noon as unfortunately h tyreek Hill dislocating
his knee, meaning multiple ligaments torn, gonna need multiple surgeries
acl turn, he is out for the year. Had been
struggling the last year or two with the Dolphins and
(02:31:44):
was actually having a decent enough season, but a major
injury for tyreek Hill into surgery today. He will be
out for the year for the Miami Dolphins, who are
already having an interesting season. But they did get the
twenty seven to twenty one win over the Jets last
night for their first win of the season. I wonder
if Mike McDaniel had have been fired if it all
lost that game. That's a good Ques home game Monday night, Jets,
(02:32:08):
sucky team. Well they won and they get the Panthers
next week, so could be a couple of wins in
a row for the Miami Dolphins and matt that is
your NFL rewe real quick. I want to quick thought
from you on this is there? My team is so solid?
Is there a chance I run the table in fantasy football?
What team? My team the Toros? Yep, you know what, Matt.
(02:32:28):
I hope you win the championship. Thank you. I'll take
you out to lunch now. I really hope you win it. Yeah,
let's go. My team is one in three. I've got
my league neighbors and Mike Evans and Rushie Rice. Don't
call for trades. I'm holding on everybody. You are absolutely
need receiver help, new chance, also my Actually, what do
marks might actually be working for me? You want t Higgins?
(02:32:49):
You can have him? Yeah, the Bengals don't score. What
do you want for him? Your soul? That seems weird?
What he marks?
Speaker 4 (02:33:02):
I don't need.
Speaker 3 (02:33:02):
I know my team's complete. I'm the seventy two Dolphins.
I've got running back, wide receiver and quarterback issues. Other
than that, we're doing great. Didn't the seven two Dolphins lose?
Speaker 2 (02:33:12):

Speaker 3 (02:33:13):
No, you gotta know that.
Speaker 22 (02:33:16):
