Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Ten uh oh one in the am here on the
Sports Talk seven ninety Hello and welcome in to a
Thursday edition of The Matt Thomas Show with Ross without
Matt Thomas.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Yeah, Toronto. How many more els? Is Drake gonna have
to take?
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Loss of rat beef case against UMG dismissed?
Speaker 1 (00:40):
Apparently he's appealing that.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Then he was at the Rockets game against the Raptors
last night and the Rockets defeat the Raptors one thirty
nine to one twenty one. That'll be part of the
discussion today here on The Matt Thomas Show with Ross
without Matt Thomas with Dan Matthews, Hey, Dan, I'm still here.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
Are you all right?
Speaker 3 (00:59):
You do it?
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Okay? I mean he got a fifth hour in yet.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
I thought I got good sleep last night, but apparently
I'm a hallucinating. We're hitting you to overtime, Pal, We're
we're going full on Blue Jays versus Dodgers Game three
on you.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Do you think that there's a part of Drake.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
I mean, you said of all the l's, because he didn't,
you know, the one that mattered the most last night
to him?
Speaker 1 (01:17):
He didn't.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
But do you think like if he's in the building
there at Rogers Center or wherever he's watching that, he's like,
I really really need them to win this, Like I
really need them.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
To win this.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
Ye.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
Probably not.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
He's probably worth about a half billion dollars or something
like that. I think he's doing. All money doesn't all
your problems. I mean, you know, what's the fun in
having fu money if you can't say if you, but
then also to say if you to the guy that
clowned you in front of the entire world. Yeah, well,
it's it's hard to have the backs of like Scottie
Barnes and I mean they're all decent players. Brandon Ingram
(01:51):
and the boys. Jaka Pearl. Jaka Pearl was hurt. Unfortunately
he had some back issues or whatever it was. He
didn't play. But yeah, Drake was in intendance in the
first row. I believe his son was there, Adonnas.
Speaker 5 (02:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
I was wondering.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Kevin Durant was like picking him up and holding it
like are they boys? I guess Kevin Durant and Drake. Yeah,
I mean Drake does hop on every bandwagon. Of course,
he's Kentucky guy. He's been a Raptors guy. He's been
a Laker, he's been with the Lakers. He's right basket
up over there. And then you know you had Jamal
(02:22):
Shed get hurt, and well it's time to hop in
the Rockets bandwagon. Babe, they were good, that's true. Drake
will stick with bun Bee, the Drake kerslamb the Drake
curse might be real. Well, Paul Wall, Yes, we can't
keep trying. I mean, can we have another Houston rapper
make big hits. I know that Travis Scott is out there,
but he's kind of Missouri City and he's not necessarily
(02:43):
of that like h towns Chopped and screwed ilk. He's
kind of more of his own entity. He's mainstream. Uh yeah,
he's mainstream exactly, more mainstream because I mean, I mean
we keep trotting Bunbe and Paul Wall out there. I
mean they're starting to getting their fifties, so I mean
we got yeah, we gotta get some new hit makers.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
Folks.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
We know that Travis is an Astros guy because I
mean there was the photo in seventeen true where he
leapt after Derek Derek Fisher slid across home plate.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Huh and he.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Does his he does his Cactus Jack softball charity game,
I think every year. And then we saw him in
Arlington where no pictures, don't take any pictures of him.
Oh the guy flashing the light.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
That's true. You know, you know what I should have
done right there?
Speaker 2 (03:26):
And maybe this is okay for the let's contextualize this
for the people that don't know. Yes, so it is
the twenty twenty three ALCS. Myself and Dan Matthews are
traveling on behalf of Sports Talk seven ninety and Carbock Brewing,
and we're in the tone and yes, Travis Scott the Astros.
That was after the josel Twova home run. Correct, No,
this was this was Game four. That was Jose Bray
(03:48):
used three run homer that broke it open. Okay, well, okay,
then there you go. So it was an Astros win
because I remember Travis Scott like went into the locker
room to Johnson to go and like, I don't know,
give the boys a victory speech or whatever. And when
he came out, do you remember he was like that boy,
that boy's lit it there, they're gonna win it. All
that boys lit. I was like, wow, I was excited
(04:08):
at that time. I was like, yeah, they're gonna win
it all, Travis, You're right, and he was wrong, but uh, yes,
so we're Uh, Travis Scott is in the tunnels. I'm
taking a couple of pictures. I don't know, send them
for friends or whatever. I wasn't gonna slap him on
social media or anything like that. And then go ahead. Yeah,
and then you have the security guy who takes out
like a cop little like mac light and like starts
(04:29):
flashing it at you like a tactical light.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
It's like, yeah, no pictures.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
He's like, no pictures, no pictures, and he's flashing the
light at me like he's gonna ruin my picture. And
all that looks on my picture is there's just like
a little bit, there's a little there's a little bit
of a light on my picture. I can perfectly, if anything,
he illuminated Travis Scott better for me well, which I
appreciate him for. And and also too because the reason
that I knew that Travis was there at that game
(04:53):
is Pregame Darren Baker, Dusty's son. Of course, somebody had
gotten to him and said, hey, Travis Scott's here, do
you want a picture with him, and he got geeked
up for it, like he was pumped.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
He was like, hell, yeah, I do.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
And Reggie Jackson also, and then Travis Scott will do
in his pictures where he puts his head.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Down he can't see his face.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
Yeah, and Reggie Jackson after the picture like like kind
of like did like the looking under the hood of
a car was like, the Hell's wrong with you?
Speaker 1 (05:19):
What are you doing here? Yeah? Well, all right, I
guess he's representing for Houston. Well enough, but.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Anyways, Drake is representing for Toronto, and the Toronto Raptors
got beat all right, So a couple of wins in
a row for the Houston Rockets, big blowout wins as well. Now,
of course it's two of the league's worst defensive teams
in the Brooklyn Nets and the Toronto Raptors, But the
Rockets were like six and a half point favorites in
that game. Raptors shot out of their minds in the
(05:45):
second quarter. They were like fifty seven percent from three.
I think it was like eight to fourteen something like
that in that second quarter, and they still rallied, they
still won.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Kevin Durant as smooth as you like.
Speaker 6 (05:56):
He is.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
One of the definitions of greatness, I always say is
making the extraordinary look routine. And that's what Kevin Durant.
Durant can do. He's only four years into his Rockets
career and now for the first time, probably in my life,
maybe for a little bit of Chris Paul being here,
when i see like a ten to fifteen footer, I'm like,
lay up, let's go ahead to the other side of
(06:19):
the floor. Guys, like I'm watch, I'm starting to look
at how the Rockets are setting up their transition defense,
Like it's over when Kevin Durant gets into his spot
and gets those shots that nobody's going to be able
to contest until he's like fifty years old. Well, I mean,
and he eats even for threes too. I mean, because
you had that pinball rebound by Steven Adams, I think
it was in the fourth quarter where like when he
(06:40):
offensive rebounds for Steven Adams and Adams finally gets it
and you do, funny enough, have Kevin Durant right there
top the three point arch and you see he's wide open,
and you say, hey, do your thing number seven, And
sure enough he did, and it was wide open and
it was one of the the daggers in that game.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
But no, I mean, he makes a difference. Man. It's
it's it's fun.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Like I don't I think we've had this yere since
you had Chris Paul and James Harden playing together. I mean,
I know that the COVID year with Russell Westbrook that
had some fun, but not to this extent, I don't think.
Speaker 7 (07:12):
So.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Yeah, last year was fun too, but it was it
was a bit of a different identity with the team.
It was almost like the not quite to the level
of the bad boy Pistons, but it was like, we're
gonna beat you, We're going to grind you to the pulp,
We're gonna be physical, and I liked it. It's a
different man of basketball. And it's not completely different this year,
I should say. But the identity last year was we
were going to grind you to a pulp, We're going
(07:32):
to be physical with you, we're gonna play lockdown defense,
and then we're gonna work some stuff with Iman Thompson
and then maybe Jalen Green's on tonight, maybe he's not
offensively well. But I mean it also too, it had
its disadvantages too, where I mean, how many last checking
you know, last last chance shot opportunities that you have
where it's just like, all right.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Where are you going here? And it would rarely ever
go your way. So this year I think that clears
up with Durant. Yeah, you feel like you're in that situation, Well,
then number seven, find him, get him open one way
or another, and give.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Him the ball. Yeah, this is what I said on Twitter.
It was it's those in case of emergency, Kevin Durant possessions,
My good Like, just throw up to seven and he's
gonna even if there's like two guys draped up all
over him, and he's gonna get the he can get
the shot up. Nobody's gonna give an honest contest because
he's seven freaking foot tall with wingspan and and he's
(08:24):
in law likelihood probably going to make the shot, just
because he's one of the greatest all time shooters. So yes,
you do have that element of it. That was nice
to watch last night. Not like it was a groundbreaking
victory for the Rockets, but they took care of business
on the road as six and a half point favorites
with the blowout victory. Against the Toronto Raptors. They've won
a couple in a row. We can talk about that
with you. Guys haven't even gotten into the World Series.
(08:45):
Say with me, Dan, you're wearing the hat. Uh huh,
Let's go Blue jest j whoo, Let's go Jays. And somebody,
by the way had a gut feeling this, a very
young prescient man had a gut feeling on Tuesday, and
I thought he was crazy. He said, the Blue Jays
are winning the next three games and winning the World Series.
Speaker 8 (09:06):
Can you hear this? He always every time I do
this particular right, always talking about.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
But he has hold on. Maybe the man knows ball
that was your problem.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
Let's not talk about like it's all been dumbs now, Jonathan,
hold on, now, hold on. We got archives with gout feelings.
We got the archive. Now he's hitting you with the receipts.
Yeah exactly, that's all good. Well, at least I don't
pull the audio of your bad picks like they've done
with me. But that's okay. Uh yeah, Jonathan, credit to you.
If it happens, it's gonna be a smash matchup.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
Yam a moto versus Gousman on the Hill on Friday,
October thirty first, Yes, Halloween night. It gets spooky every day.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
October might get spooky for the Dodgers coming Friday night,
so they might win three in a row. And then
the next week we will allow Jonathan Allen to gloat
so we can talk about the World Series. Of course,
we got the Texans in action this week as well
against the Denver Broncos. Some angles to cover. There a
lot of stuff to get to. Dan Matthews hanging out
for the first hour. We will have Adam Wexler in
in the fourth hour. A couple of hours solo with
(10:09):
me as well. We have I just don't get it
to get to news at noon. A lot of stuff
to get to as well. Seven one three two one
two five seven ninety. If you would like to get
in and contribute to the conversation seven one three two
one two five seven ninety, it is the Bat Thomas
Show with Ross with you until two o'clock here on
Sports Talk seven nighty oh, I see I didn't mention.
(10:48):
We were talking Houston Legends and I didn't mention Scarface.
Speaker 1 (10:52):
That's on me.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
I gotta do better. I gotta go back to the
drawing board. I gotta work harder, I gotta study harder,
and I'm.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
Gonna be better. This is that the uh this was
the credit song at the end of Neighbors I believe.
Oh really? Yeah, the one with Seth Rogen and Zach
zach Efron. Yeah, it was that was decent. It was decent.
Neighbors too not so good. It just they tried too hard. Yeah,
like it was like, now he's friends with zach Efron.
I don't really know how this works, but yeah, how
(11:18):
do you forget about Scar? How can you be friends
with Zach Efron? All right, Welcome back to The Matt
Thomas Show with Ross, without Matt Thomas, with Dan Matthews.
I'm here, at least for the first hour, hanging out
wearing his lsu GARB. I heard you guys were coming
under fire during the show for not talking enough Aggie football.
Is that true?
Speaker 9 (11:37):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (11:38):
I mean, you know, I gave credit where credit's due.
We had Peter Burns on at six thirty, so I
mean we still got Peter Burns up at six thirty. Well,
I mean he was already up because he's got sec
this morning with Chris Doring, so I asked him.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
I was like.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
I was like, well, you know you guys start at
seven o'clock eastern time. Well, no, that wouldn't make sense
eight o'clock eastern time. Yes, So I was like, would
you want to do six third? And he was like yeah, sure.
Peter Burns what a hell of a guy. He really
he's one of my favorite and he also too. He
has the career path that you know, the end of
the rainbow for everybody. He and Mark sleigh Ball have
(12:11):
the two best jobs on the planet. During football season,
you do football and then when it gets the golf,
you do golf. It's not bad, it really isn't could
be worse, It could be much much.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
At all these nice country clubs that augusta national place,
I'd take it. It beats a hole in the head.
Well's gonna happened.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
So, I guess you guys were talking about LSU has
a what is the LSU Bureau of Sports Talk seven ninety.
That would be you and Chris Gordy. Think as far
as the next head coach over there, Well, I mean
yesterday you had some absolute gasoline thrown on it by
the governor.
Speaker 1 (12:44):
Can you explain this to me?
Speaker 2 (12:45):
Like I'm five, Why is why is the governor stepping
in and saying the eighty is not going to make the.
Speaker 1 (12:50):
Highest so the insane.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
So the governor makes all the appointments in the state
for the Board of Supervisors, which is the Board of Trustees.
And what he said was that the ad would not
be in charge of it. They would appoint a committee.
The Board of Supervisors would Because then there's there seemed
to be a Gatchia moment with one of the Board
of Supervisors where the reporter asked it the wrong way.
(13:13):
He did not say that the supervisors are making it.
It will be a committee that's making it. But it's
just the whole thing though, too. It's not only just
the lunacy that it seems of how this entire process
has played out, because it all supposedly started off with
him going around from Sweet to Sweet on Saturday night
as they're getting embarrassed by A and M, which you
(13:34):
did embarrass lsu I, I will give you that and
it and it was on full display. But he was
going Sweet to Sweet to get the buyout money from
the rich people that were up there. And it's and
it's a true politic political way right there, because he
knew that people had probably been drinking all day. So
it's like, hey, you kick in a few million here?
Well hell yeah, well you get the get this sob
(13:56):
out of here. I've had enough or actually no, no, no,
I'm getting the wrong.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
He have like a little meter. He was filling up
with a highlighter like your teacher in third grade did
when you were trying to raise up enough funds.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
He's probably he's probably got you know, one of one
of his staffers with him. That's, you know, jotting it
down for who to call the following morning to collect
h he probably had somebody doing that. But yeah, you know,
will you kicking wait, will you kick in for this?
Speaker 5 (14:17):
Does that?
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Hell?
Speaker 6 (14:18):
He talked?
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Dude, you haven't heard him? No, I haven't. What's his name,
Jeff Landry?
Speaker 2 (14:22):
And we've got now we've got Jonathan pull Pull either
one of the Landries.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
I want him to hear that.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
I want cut up under now talking about talking about
les and you're going to hear his voice. But then
you're also when you hear him, going to think is
this a Saturday Night Live bit?
Speaker 1 (14:40):
Like, seriously, is it? Please? I'm super excited. Just one
of the two.
Speaker 10 (14:46):
Down a failed path, and I wanted to tell you something.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
This is a pattern. The guy that hear it out
it wrote that contract.
Speaker 10 (14:56):
Class Texas and have seventy something million dollars.
Speaker 1 (14:59):
Oh no, no, right now, three million dollar liability.
Speaker 10 (15:02):
We are not my god again.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
And you know what I believe.
Speaker 10 (15:06):
I believe him up a great coach and maybe we
let President Trump pick it. He loves winners.
Speaker 1 (15:10):
You know, I'm not gonna be picking the next coach, but.
Speaker 10 (15:13):
I can promise you we're gonna pick a coach and
we're gonna make sure that that coach is successful, and
we're gonna make sure that he's compensated properly, and we're
gonna put metrics on it because I'm tired of rewarding
failure in this country and then leaving the taxpayers on
the foot, you know, to foot the bill.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
So yeah, oh yeah, right now.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
You you don't you don't want.
Speaker 1 (15:40):
The taxpayers to be footing the bill? You? Oh my god,
did he have a washboard and a spoon on the money.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
You got you got my guy with the spoons on
the on the thumbs. Yeah, I mean that's good stuff.
Don't get me wrong. He finish every speech with.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
I mean He's from Acadiana, so he probably could.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
And then he got all of your base, brother, he
sped off on fan boat one.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
That's it. He's going.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
He's going down the Mississippi with what do they call
Cajun claus. I can't remember what they call Cajun claus,
but Cajun clause is supposedly pulled down the Mississippi River.
Bye instead of reindeer, a bunch of alligators in the
lead reindeer that is supposed to be like the Rudolph
of the bunch is named Gaston. I mean this sounds
like a full on soap opera. I mean, aren't isn't
(16:30):
the state of Louisiana destitute?
Speaker 1 (16:32):
I have a lot of issues.
Speaker 2 (16:34):
So there's a good buddy of me and Gordy's named
Matt Moscona, who hosts in Baton Rouge, and he has
a line famously that says, we're first in the categories
you want to be last in, and we're last in
the categories you want to be first in drinking gambling.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
Now, I love Louisiana, Don't get me wrong. I've been
I went to New Orleans from a fortieth I went
to New Orleans from a thirtieth.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
I've been to Baton Rouge. I like Lafayette. I've where
else have I been in there? I mean Lake Charles,
of course, I've never once spent time in Lafayette, only
driven for Okay, but Charles, I've been to the Marty
Girl Parade at Lafayette. It's wonderful nice. So you know
that that is actual Marti gral Right. People think that
New Orleans is no Anthony Bourdain did it a few
years ago on Parts Unknown, where they call it a
(17:15):
few years ago, running running the Mardi Gras. He's been
he's been missing for where you just got to. I'd
say that's a good way to say it. But they
call it running the Marty Gras. And it's basically they
just have a bunch of drunk Cajuns in a field
and they throw a chicken out there and they're trying
to run track down the chicken. I was at a
(17:36):
parade and there was children there, so nobody was. Nobody's
tracking chickens. Well, I mean maybe they already got the chicken,
but because it's for the gumbo that night, Okay, like
during this episode. During during this episode, they're going like
to the old folks home and you got this lady
in a wheelchair trick in a butt light.
Speaker 1 (17:51):
Oh wow, he was great. You know, it was awesome.
Speaker 2 (17:53):
At the at the grocery store in Lafayette, you can
buy a bag of boiled crawfish, you know how you
go to like h GB and you should get a
rotisserie chicken and or or whatever like this meal Simples.
Speaker 1 (18:04):
The Meal Simples in Louisiana was literally.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
A bag of boiled crawfish and you could add sausage
and corn if you wanted to for extra couple bucks.
Speaker 1 (18:11):
It was actually quite affordable as well.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
I don't know if it tasted any good because I
didn't buy it, but I was very impressed.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
And yes, we were in there buying liquor.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
You can buy you can buy a liquor and alcohol
in Louisiana, which I mean, we fully applaud them for that,
uh huh. But also it seems like a lot of
corruption and a lot of misallocated funds Louisiana government there
with Louisiana politics, and they're all like, yeah, well, you know,
we're kind of running out of books in the library,
but we gonna go ahead and drop fifty million on
buying out Brian Kelly, Well, I mean, you know, the
(18:39):
interstates might not be great, and if you drive through
Louisiana they are not great, especially Rickety Rhoads. But that
LSU locker room looks nice if you're right, if you're
riding in that in that RV like I have been,
and you're trying to get some sleep, it ain't gonna
happen if you're driving to Louisiana.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
It's kind of part of the charm though, Oh Louisiana, Yeah,
no it is.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
But Tiger Stadium was built because of eruption. Okay, here
we can't you know, Kingfish here, a king Fish here?
We pe long he long the bridge right there of
going over the Mississippi River, and uh, he wanted to
build a football stadium in the state Assembly told him no, no, no, no, yeah,
we we don't have the funds for a football stadium.
But then somebody who was savvy enough got to him
(19:19):
and said, you know, Kingfish, what we really need here
in this state is we need some more dormitories. So
what if you just happened to build a dormitory with
a football stadium inside of it, and that's how you
got Tiger Stadium, and my dad lived in that said dormitory.
I wonder if that happened in Texas. There were some
like actual classes you could have at the stadium. That's
tmulti use multi use to it's it's that's the thing, hey,
(19:41):
it's you had to walk up all the steps.
Speaker 1 (19:43):
You didn't want the class there. It's not a football stadium,
it's a it's a multi use facility.
Speaker 2 (19:46):
At least back in my day, they might have installed
elevator's house back there in the dark ages. All right, anyways,
on that note, we're gonna take a break. What were
we talking about this segment? Not sure it flew by though,
I meant politics.
Speaker 5 (19:58):
We got.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
We got Louisiana politics. My favorite governor on the planet
is Jeff Landry. Absolutely not.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
I've never heard the man speak until yesterday. I've never
heard of him.
Speaker 7 (20:08):
You know.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
All I could think of was, how the hell did
this guy get into a public office.
Speaker 1 (20:14):
Uh, it's louis again, it's Louisiana. It makes per faily basis.
Speaker 2 (20:19):
The buddy of mine once told me about politicians, we
don't send our best, you know that, right?
Speaker 1 (20:23):
No?
Speaker 2 (20:24):
No, Well, because oftentimes the people, the people who are
are fit, and good leaders generally aren't. The ones who
are are the extremely hungry, ambitious types. Those are the
people that step on people's faces and backs, and those
are the people that end up at the top of
politics and corporations.
Speaker 1 (20:40):
But I digress. We're gonna take quick break here on
Sports Talk seven ninety rossby here out.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
With you, Dan Matthews hanging out. He's gonna be with
us until eleven o'clock. Then we have I just don't
get it coming up at eleven thirty News at noon.
I mean a ton of stuff. You guys can get
on the phone lines if you'd like to as well.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety is
the phone number. Seven one three two one two five
seven ninety. Back in a minute after this bottom of
the eye break.
Speaker 11 (21:03):
It's gonna be some stuff you're gonna see that's gonna
make it hard to small it do whatever you see
the brain and the pang. You gotta keep your says
a human. You gotta be able to.
Speaker 1 (21:14):
Small keep your head up.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
Welcome back to the Man Thomas Show with Ross. Don't
laugh at me, jentlemen. This song had this one. It
was Tupac on the cross wrapping in this video Good Times.
It was this ninety six somewhere around there.
Speaker 1 (21:42):
I mean, it's not you know me, You've mentioning outcasts
and one of my friend's sons going, yeah, I love
old school. I was like, you know, what if I
could hit someone, Well, I was like thirty years ago.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
So I mean that's like in the nineties, we're talking
about music from the sixties.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
Well, oh, I'm gonna throw off you see me exactly,
thanks for doing that. It's like I was talking with
Rod Ryan about the Amazon commercial where Chris Farley's brother
is running on the treadmill listening to Collective Soul, and I,
you know, I'm like, it's an old guy. It's a dad.
So I said to Rod, I go, so Collective Soul's
old guy music. Now he goes, yeah, Collective Soul's old
(22:16):
guy music. Yeah, Dan, it's fine. We're getting older. That
just means we survived. We feel pretty good about it.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
Hey beats, the alternative looks like forward with or without us,
and I'm glad to be here. Welcome back to the
Matt Thomas Show with Ross without Matt Thomas, With Dan Matthews.
Matt is out traveling now the Rockets have two days off.
I think I think he's just coming. He's coming back
(22:42):
home to see is Jonathan. Do you have the information
on this? His daughter's playing volleyball. Yeah, he's like a big.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
Game or something. Oh, they're in the playoffs, playoffs, So
you're silently judging.
Speaker 2 (22:56):
I'm not judging. Carlyn only has so many more high
school games.
Speaker 1 (23:00):
Was asking for information.
Speaker 2 (23:02):
She is the all time Kingwood High School leader assists
assist leader. Congratulations to her. Now you got your gathering
information to make and and and and assumed opinion.
Speaker 1 (23:11):
And go go to uh go Rhode Island. Rams. Yeah. Also,
this is what I have to say about that.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
So he is I don't know where he is, if
he's in the air, what he's doing, but he is
out today. He will be back tomorrow I think from Boston. No,
he said he's gonna be here on Friday.
Speaker 1 (23:25):
I'm see. I'm confused. He's gonna be physically. He emails
us this every week and I just I like plants
at the email on Sunday morning with like a bleary
eyes and then I forget about it.
Speaker 2 (23:34):
So see that that is the thing with email too,
Like we're the worst emailer. Well, I mean, I just
I try to consolidate mine as much as possible because
then it's it's one of those did you get the email?
Speaker 1 (23:45):
And then my response is which one? Yeah, I need
to be better about that. But anyways, Okay, so Matt
Thomas is out. We are here. We're talking about a
number of different things right now. Your World series envy
e is trey Ya Savage? Correct?
Speaker 2 (24:03):
After last night, That's who I would go with for sure.
He's got two starts in the well. He wasn't that
great in his first start, four innings, two earned runs,
and he did he let me see how many of
these strike out? He struck out five and then twelve
last night, seven innings pitched. Yeah, maybe it's gonna be
Vlag Guerrero Junior. He had the he had a couple
of home runs last night.
Speaker 1 (24:23):
Uh, he had at least one. I know.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
I'm sorry they had the I'm sorry. I'm thinking of
the two leadoff basically home runs. Davis, she had one
of them, did vlag Guerrero Junior. But he's had a
couple of home runs in the series. And then David Schneider,
you know, getting the start leading off last night, somebody
on Twitter had said, saw that, you know, David Schneider
really and his sister dunked on them, and was like, well,
I guess it worked out.
Speaker 1 (24:44):
Yes, it did leadoff home run.
Speaker 2 (24:46):
Now then he struck out in his other two had
bets also did draw walk, but that's okay. Yeah, Vlag
Guerrero is opsing like thirteen hundred in the world in
the okay, so he probably won't. Yeah, probably he's gonna
win it. That was nice to see, though. I mean,
it's funny, like the Dodgers do feel like this death
star of a team. And while I guess we do
know what happened to the death Star in Star Wars
(25:09):
episode four, even though it was the first Star Wars
very confusing thanks to that George Lucas. But anyways, I'm
so happy it's I want George Springer. I saw getting
ready to get into the game last night, so he
was gonna pinch run at the end of the game.
Why would they do that, by the way, when they
were up six to one. It was just gonna be
(25:29):
like in a dire situation because Bobashett is basically playing
on one leg right now, Like he hit the ball
the way to the wall the other night and he
only got the first. So I mean, that's that's a
huge reason right there, is he can barely run, and
it's gonna be I mean, that's gonna be a good one.
Kevin Gousman versus Yoshinobu man Yamamoto with the World Series
on the line, both games at the Rogers Center on
(25:51):
Friday night on Halloween. Well, I mean, and it's funny
too because, as I mentioned last night, the the bargaining
is already happening with Dodger fans like a guy on
Twitter at Dodgers Andrew, so you can imagine whose side
he's on. Despite the national media narrative of the Mighty Dodgers,
Dodger fans who watched the team all season know how
flawed they are and all those flaws are being exposed
(26:13):
in this series.
Speaker 1 (26:15):
So wait a minute.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
Some rookie Betts is flawed, Freddie Freeman is flawed. Uh
shoy Otani is flawed. All three of those guys. When
over eleven was six strikeouts last night, like the bullpen,
I'll actually somewhat ride with you on. But then if
it was great in that eighteen n game, No, that
was the thing like, I kept going back and forth
this guy, and it's seriously I was like, I was like,
please let me lead you to the injuries. Please let
(26:37):
me lead you to the injuries. Because you try to
hit me with that, You're not gonna get far with that. Yeah, absolutely, certainly,
not when you're we talk about relative to the Astros.
But it's so funny. Have they started accusing the Blue
Jays of cheating yet? I'm sure that would happen after
the first two home runs the game. Yeah, that's probably
Dodger Stadium where it was orl Hirscheizer last night. If
you had an oral Hirscheizer there, he would have been like, no,
(26:58):
I don't mean to pick a scab here, but you
know with that Springer guy and the dugout and Miles
Straw there, man, good times. Look, you know some people
just take take the l better than others. And Dodger
and Yankee fans and.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
Uh, the the.
Speaker 2 (27:13):
The people who want to glom onto them alike, they don't.
I mean, you, Buster Only, that eighteen inning games seems
like it really took a lot out of the Dodgers.
Is that what we're going with? That's what Buster Only
is going with. I guess it was a talent evaluator
he had spoken with, Oh god, what does that mean,
I'm a talent evaluator. I think it means nothing.
Speaker 1 (27:33):
Yeah, it doesn't mean anything. You heard what. I think
it was Asson Barger that said it where they're like, man,
how'd you guys bounce back for game four? Oh? Pre
workout and coffee. Yeah, it's all good, baby. I mean
the Red Sox and O four they went with shots
of Jack Dinge. You also, I think people are going
with the Dodgers are old. I think it's also what people.
That's another one that I've heard too, which it's just
like they are a little bit of an older team,
laid away money to pay down the roads.
Speaker 2 (27:55):
I mean they went till two eight in, but what
time was first pitch of the next game? It was
until like seven pm or whatever. Hey, what does Demiko
Ryan tell us all the time? They got a plan
in it too exactly, but whatever. That's funny. I love
the excuse making for the Dodger. I hope they lose.
That'd be really heartbreaking if they went back to back
games in Toronto. That actually made my stomach hurt, saying
(28:15):
that out loud. Robert on the south side wanted to
get into the phone lines.
Speaker 1 (28:18):
What's up, Robert, Hey, what's going on?
Speaker 12 (28:21):
Thanks for taking my call. I have something really random
that I was thinking about a couple of days ago. Uh, Dad,
can you do us all a favor? Can you please
do an injury report as the astros and your Donald
Trump impersonation.
Speaker 1 (28:35):
I think it would be hilarious. Yes, have a great day.
Speaker 12 (28:37):
Thanks for taking my call.
Speaker 1 (28:39):
You got it, Robert. I apologize for for jumping in
on you right there, but I mean, of course, you
had Luis Gacia who went on the IL September the tenth.
I'll go to them quickly. Don't you worry. Don't you worry.
You know I tend to ramble sometimes. Well, I mean
I can understand that. You know, I am the potus,
so I can be up here and I can speak
for as long as I want to. Zach Senzo who
(29:00):
had the right elbow strain. In addition to the hand,
you had Yodan Alvarez who had the hand inflammation. And
then on further review they found that there was a
fracture in there. Then he had to go on the
IL yet again, and they kept telling us, you know, Donald,
he's only gonna be gone just a few days, but
I didn't believe him at the time. And then three
months later he finally shows back up, but then he
(29:23):
hurts his ankle again and he was out. There were
way too many to be able to go through, but
I only went through just a handful of highlights for you. Oh,
thank you, thank you. Donald's gonna land the plane for you.
I appreciate you.
Speaker 8 (29:35):
You know, I'm so surprised that it's pretty good.
Speaker 2 (29:39):
It's all about cadence, Fritz. That's what Frank Caliendo, you know,
teaches its cadence. Yeah, yeah, you got to be able
to certain points. And I just don't want to hear
all about the injury. And it's also you know, like
where it's it's for naming some of the names too,
But you've got pictures like Renel Blanco.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
You gotta get the names. Froja did a great job
of skippering.
Speaker 2 (30:05):
Yes, Deshaun did he say Deshaun Watson was gonna be
a great quarterback too. I think he's gonna be really rich.
Well he is, Yeah, he's got that right about that.
I don't know what he's doing right now and then supposedly.
Speaker 1 (30:18):
Supposedly people say the key to your success is the massages?
Is that true Numberfore, all right, we're gonna take a
break here.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
On the Matt Thomas Show with Ross, Dan Matthews is
hanging out taking requests seven to one three two one
two five seven ninety the phone number seven one three
two five seven ninety ething you guys want to get
to as we have Dan with us until eleven o'clock.
We have I just don't get it coming up at
eleven to thirty. Adam West will join at one o'clock.
It's a jam packed Matt Thomas Show with Ross without
(30:48):
Matt Thomas, with the until two o'clock.
Speaker 1 (30:56):
Welcome back to the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. You're
on Sports Talk seven ninety without Matt Thomas, which which
one has James Harden's jersey retired in it?
Speaker 2 (31:07):
Are you talking about strip clubs? H I believe it
was Dreams, but I cannot confirm or deny. Okay, I've
also heard that they have some good fried chicken wings
at the at the wing joint in the back. I've
heard really cannot confirm or deny that either. Well, because
I mean my former stop. It was Magic City that
was known for the freak wings. Yeah, you get, you
(31:29):
get fried fish fried chicken wings. I can't remember what
else you do fish, I don't. I mean, I can't
remember what else I heard they do. I don't think
the back of Dreams. I mean I've heard about it
before me too, I mean back in Manhattan. I'm in Kansas. Yeah,
I heard it in a love song.
Speaker 1 (31:42):
All right. Seven one three.
Speaker 2 (31:43):
Two one two five seven ninety is the phone number
if you'd like to get in. Seven to one three
two one two five seven ninety a half. Some of
they have freshened up the bump the bump rotation around here.
Speaker 1 (31:53):
I like it in.
Speaker 2 (31:53):
iHeartMedia Houston, which I'm a big fan of it as well.
Speaker 1 (31:57):
Shout out to the old school screw shop man screw
shot every one on uh, yeah, I know what you're
talking about, thirty fourth or Ella one of them.
Speaker 5 (32:07):
It was.
Speaker 1 (32:07):
It was over on the North Side. I'm going to
have to take your word for it, because I remember
that was always like us Saint Thomas guys, there be
Oh you're going to the screw shop, Yeah, I'm going. Yeah,
that's what the good Catholic boys did that's where you
all partied. Yeah, all are drinking forties in the parking
lot or what I mean.
Speaker 2 (32:23):
It was first get you know, the new stuff, and
then you know, take the CD and be able to
have it that night for wherever the keger was, Rod
or Ron Carter was one of the two. You mean
Bible study if you if you're saying, if you're Saint
Thomas straight Jesuit.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
Lamar bel Air, you know what I'm talking about. All right,
I'll take your word for it. Southwest Side we got
it going. M I didn't do that. I was studying books, all.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
Right, Texting Dangery Report, Uh huh. There was a lot
of players listed on there. Dan unfortunately limited on Wednesday,
and of course as we go along later today we'll
get some updates. Hopefully we'll get some up graded to full.
Jalen Petree limited foot injury, Nico Collins limited concussion, Christian
(33:08):
kirk Man.
Speaker 1 (33:09):
I feel like an idiot.
Speaker 2 (33:10):
Christian kirk At the start of the season, his over
under was like six hundred and forty nine yards and
I was like, hey man, all he has to do
is stay healthy. He's hitting over I know he's had
some hamstring issues and literally week one he's missing with
hamstring injuries and then he keep plays you hear that static? Yeah,
he sabotage just because you're sabotaging him.
Speaker 12 (33:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (33:29):
Hold on, Who's who said? Is Nick Casario back there
in the control room. It's it's a bunch of what's
going on. It's it's a it's about the garbage. It's
it's about the player, Christian Kirk and then he and
then he gets hurt with a hamstring injury again, like
what's the deal.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
And he's gonna he's gonna have the noodles for hamstrings.
I don't like this.
Speaker 2 (33:48):
He's gonna he's gonna have to really get after it.
Then if you're gonna feeling, I'm gonna lose all my
gut feeling. That's fine.
Speaker 1 (33:55):
I mean, practiced in Barrios limited with a chest injury.
And then you have Jacob Johnson limited with a hamstring injury.
So a couple of extra guys cropping up with some
limited practices there on Wednesday. They we weren't necessarily thinking,
I hope Nico Collins plays funny enough they were able
to get the victory without him last week against San Francisco,
but Denver.
Speaker 2 (34:15):
Denver is better. Denver is a better team, They're a
healthier team. They're coming in here. If the Texans could
get the victory this weekend, I mean, that's gonna be
the biggest feather in their cap so far this year.
And the funny thing is is, you think, as bad
as this offensive line is, you know, sacks giving up
this season, the Texans are twentieth out of thirty two. Like,
it's not like, you know, CJ is getting hit on
every single drop back and gave you the Jonathan m
(34:38):
Alexander were you know, there were the numbers that he
gave us a few weeks ago about, you know, the
amount of dropbacks when CJ. Shroud gets hit and it
was less this year than it was last year. So
I mean, all of those there's that, But I mean
you've got Nick Benito, You've got Jonathan Cooper that are
gonna be.
Speaker 1 (34:55):
Coming after you. And then this is also a Denver
team that does not allow their quarterback to get sacked.
They have eight and eight games.
Speaker 2 (35:02):
Yeah, they have one of the best offensive lines and
they have one of the best defensive lines. You had
all that up there, one of the best teams in football.
Now here's the offensive line part though, that kind of
has a little bit of a caveat to it. As
we had ben Benjamin albright On from Denver earlier and
he talked about he goes, but think about the defenses
they played like Dallas who they played last week, Well
they didn't even count, I mean, but they still have
(35:22):
They don't feel the defense, do they? I mean, I
think they try. It's there's eleven guys out there. It's
just once they didn't have number eleven out there anymore.
It kind of, you know, it dodged the credibility of
everybody else that's out there.
Speaker 1 (35:33):
Good think Jerry Jones didn't think they needed him, think
it was gonna you know, hey, hey we traded away Herschel,
we can trade away at Michael Parson then get ninety
one and get a good, good draft capital in return.
People thought that was all Jimmy no I was in
on that and then and now that, Yeah, how's that
first round pick looking? Let's see, aren't the Yeah, the
Green Bay Packers are five to one and one, so
(35:57):
have it basically effectively a second round pick. You can
book in it.
Speaker 2 (36:00):
You can be top five for your first one and
then beat the end of the first round. Basically you
get a second round pick right there, and Jerry Jones
will blow both of them. So that's a great opportunity
for him. But yeah, the Broncos, as you said, uh,
let me see who are the best defense the Well,
the Jets defense isn't very good these days. They only
scored thirteen points against him on the road against the Eagles.
(36:20):
Decent enough, Bengals, Chargers, decent enough. Colts defense has been
pretty good, but that was also the first game of
the season. Yeah, Broncos' schedules looked a little bit softer
than I thought it was, so maybe that's why your
Houston Texans are favored in the matchup this weekend. All
I'm asking for for the audio visual people over at
the Texans is, if you're in a situation where you're
(36:43):
in a kneel down to end the game, please play
the Russell Wilson Broncos country.
Speaker 1 (36:47):
That's right, Broncos country, that's right. Did you notice it?
And I brought this up with Gordy earlier that none
of those videos did well where it was him Brian
Harson tried to do it.
Speaker 2 (36:57):
He gets fired at Auburn. Spencer Ratler did it in
South Carolina didn't go well for him. And then what
did he do? They did like a I think he
said country. Let's I think he said game cock country.
Let's right, okay, and then j it's like a curse.
Yeah it was. It was the new Age Madden curse. Yes,
Russell Wilson's second year in Denver wasn't that horrible? I
(37:17):
mean the numbers were actually better than the results because
they were behind in a lot of those games. Can
tell you what quality a quarterback he is. When Brian
when Jackson Dark got hurt and Brian Dables like running
into the blue tent, get him so fast as Brian
Dable had moved in fifteen years.
Speaker 1 (37:34):
Brian, he might get him out. Cuss. He's fine, get
him some smelling sauce. He's gonna put corningstone on. He's
gotta put corning stone on. All right, here we go,
there we go. Uh, what is it?
Speaker 2 (37:48):
Do we have a sounder for the Dan Matthews I forgot,
Yeah we had. We'll get the ding going at some
point quick on it for him. So it's okay, that's okay,
he knows right, that's true. So hey, I believe it,
Johnny Shohna at all I do is back you up
in this in this world, you're welcome. Well, I mean,
especially considering who's normally in that chair. Just know that
(38:08):
even when I'm not on one of the microphones, it
is always US three against Matt. That will always to everyone,
it's the world against Matt. Everybody knows. I'm sorry. We're
gonna do absolutely, We're gonna take a break here on
the Matt Thomas Show with Ross without man Thomas, Dan,
thanks for hanging out.
Speaker 1 (38:23):
You're the best man. Appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (38:24):
No, you are all right, So I'm gonna be fine
solo for the next couple hours.
Speaker 1 (38:28):
Are we talking some Rockets?
Speaker 2 (38:29):
We'll definitely mix in some Texans, college football, anything you
guys want to get into. So the phone lines are
wide open if you want to get in. Seven to
one three two one two five seven ninety is the
phone number. Seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
Rockets get their second straight win, this one against the Raptors.
Do you say it's the Raptors and the Nets wake
(38:49):
me up when they beat a good team, or do
you say, hey, these are two blowouts. Nice victories by
your Houston Rockets. I want to hear your opinion on
that and anything else you want to get to. At
seven one three two one two five, I have seven
ninety our number two of the Matt Thomas Show with
Ross without Matt Thomas, is next after the short break.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
This is the Matt Thomas Show with.
Speaker 13 (39:09):
Ross eleven oh one in the am here on.
Speaker 2 (39:19):
Sports Talk seven ninety. It is our number two of
the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. I'm gonna be honest
with you. I almost just said Sports r V Show.
How I'm not normally used to opening up hours of programs.
That's Matt Thomas's job. Normally I just sit here and
make fun of them for four hours every day. But
Matt Thomas is out and I am hosting solo with
(39:42):
you for the next couple of hours. So if you
want to get in the phone lines, they are wide
open and available for you. At seven one three two
one two five seven ninety seven one three two one
two five seven ninety. Jonathan Allen is here as well.
He will bring us the news at noon coming up
at You Guessed It Noon? We also have I Just
(40:03):
Don't get It coming up at eleven thirty and you
guys on the phone lines at seven one three two
one two five seven ninety. Now I have to get
into this big, enthralling and engrossing discussion on the Houston Rockets.
That's what I plan for this segment. But I have
to do a quick a public service now it so
and a quick aside. Jonathan, I mean, you are how
(40:24):
old now these days? You turn twenty three? Happy birthday? Yeah,
so you are twenty three? You know the rules of
the office in a shared kitchen environment in the office, Yeah,
the microwave? Is it okay to heat up shellfish or fish?
Speaker 1 (40:41):
Do they really do that? That's still gross?
Speaker 2 (40:43):
It's okay, okay, just just tell me it's gonna it's
gonna sumee this when we feel better, just say, you know,
you're not supposed to do that. No, I know, No, okay,
I feel like that's kind of even greened.
Speaker 1 (40:52):
It's like what you learned that I don't even know.
Speaker 2 (40:53):
Like the literally the first office you ever work in,
you learn you're not supposed to be heating somebody heat
it up shellfish? There it smells like a two day
old crawfish boil in the kitchen right now, I went
to go get some coffee, mind my own business, and
then you get slapped in the face by the the
funk of funky.
Speaker 1 (41:13):
Old clock actually known o'clock in the morning. Man, nobody's
anybody got time for that?
Speaker 4 (41:18):
All right?
Speaker 2 (41:18):
I know it's not Wednesday, but ain't nobody got time
for that? That's ridiculous. And that's the worst part is
there's a couple of people who their cubes are like
right next to the kitchen, so they're gonna have to
deal with that. But folks, public service announcement, if you
were in a shared office kitchen space, it is bad
etiquette and bad form to show up with any kind
of fish or shellfish. All right, I thought this was
(41:39):
like widely known, but we're having some issues up here
at iHeartMedia Houston.
Speaker 1 (41:44):
Okay, anyway, is.
Speaker 2 (41:45):
This seven one thirty two one two five seven n
eighty is the phone number. As I said, if you
want to get in you talk about anything that we
are getting into Texans and Broncos coming up this weekend.
We'll keep an eye on the injury report later today.
But I mentioned you still have Nico's collins limited with
the concussion. But normally guys miss about one week and
then they're back from there. Christian Kirk Hamstring, I mean,
(42:07):
who knows what's going to happen. On that funny part
is Joe Mixon is still not listed on the injury
report at all because it was an off season injury,
and at this point we're just figuring that Joe Mixon
isn't going to play at all for your Houston Texans
this season, as called by one Matthew Thomas. Kudos to
him on that, but also we carry your Houston Rockets
(42:27):
here on Sports Talk seven to ninety. They got their
second win of the season. Just judging by a lot
of the reaction from last night in the postgame show
and so far the start of this show doesn't sound
like everybody's fully engrossed in Houston Rockets basketball right now,
but second.
Speaker 1 (42:43):
Win was impressive.
Speaker 2 (42:44):
Kevin Durant I said this earlier in the first hour,
like I'm already starting to get spoiled by how good
Kevin Durant is.
Speaker 1 (42:54):
And that happens to us. You know, when you have
somebody and.
Speaker 2 (43:01):
In your city and you follow their sport, you almost
get spoiled by how great they are.
Speaker 1 (43:06):
For example, the Jose L two veays of the world.
Speaker 2 (43:09):
I think Houston quite frankly was spoiled by James Harden
and what he dude was dropping thirty five a game
and getting crushed by Rockets fans. I mean, insanely spoiled,
but also that there's some other factors that went into that,
of course the whole you know, how much has he invested,
how much does he want to win?
Speaker 1 (43:24):
The strip club stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (43:25):
It's like, I don't know if he's at the strip
club till four that's okay, game didn't start till like
ten pm. You can get his rest in, get his
shots up, and then he goes out there and he's
dropping thirty five a night. Doesn't bother me. But it
feels like I'm already starting to take Kevin durank for granted.
The shots that he can make, the ten foot pull
ups that are basically layups for him at this point
(43:45):
and have been since he could shoot a basketball. It's
been really incredible to watch. Excuse me, got something in
my throat there. It's been incredible to watch Kevin Durant
eleven and nineteen from the field, thirty one points, only
four games in a Rockets uniform and I'm already spoiled
by how great he is. A couple of possessions he's
he's shooting wide open threes and you're like, yep, that's in.
(44:06):
Go ahead and head to the other side of the floor.
This dude is great, man. And you can definitely tell
that there has been some a little bit of slowing
down of Kevin Durant. He doesn't move like he once was.
The lateral quickness isn't there. Defensively, while he's been good
because he's got length. He blocked a couple of they
(44:27):
got three blocks last night actually to where he's basically
a seven footer with a lengthier wingspan than that. He
can block shots, and people forget in his prime in
those Hampton to Hampton's five lineups, when he was with
the Warriors and Draymond Green and Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.
Yes it was a super team, but the alpha dog
(44:47):
on that team. Go ahead and look up who won
the NBA Finals MVPs both of those years. It was
Kevin Durant. And one of the reasons those Hampton's fives
lineup work with Kevin Durant five because he was actually
a pretty good rim protector in his day, and while
he can still block shots because he is still tall
and lengthy, So he was a pretty good defensive player,
(45:08):
I would say, I would dare to say vastly underrated
defensive player in his prime. Now he doesn't have the
same step that he did in those days now that
he's thirty seven years old, but getting it done on
both ends of the floor last night with the thirty
one points and the three blocks, also didn't turn the
ball over a ton. That's something you're gonna have to
keep an eye on as we go along here, because
guys like to get into his kitchen. They get up
(45:30):
on him, and he can dribble the ball off his foot,
not necessarily.
Speaker 1 (45:34):
He's got good handle.
Speaker 2 (45:35):
He can get to the basket, but you know, he's
not like, I don't know, Kyrie Irving or Chris Paul
or something like that as far as a dribbler, And
that's just not who he's gonna be, and that's gonna
it's gonna always be a part of his game. I
think he's been averaging over three turnovers a game for
basically his entire NBA career. That's probably not going to
change at this point. But still great to see him
play play well. Alprin Shangoon almost had a triple double.
(45:58):
He had eighteen points, nine assists, and eight rebounds in
thirty five minutes, and it was a bit of a
slip back for a men.
Speaker 1 (46:06):
Thompson.
Speaker 2 (46:06):
With the turnovers, that's certainly something that we are also
going to have to keep an eye on monitor with
the losing the ball handling of Fred van Vliet. He
had four turnovers, but he had seven assists. Started off
slow offensively, he was getting into the basket and he
got eighteen points. And overall I'm starting to not starting
to get encouraged, but it's nice to see the wins
pile up. Like the first lost against the loss against
(46:28):
the Oklahoma City Thunder in a couple of overtimes, you're like,
m would have been nice to get that one didn't
work out. The Pistons game was just one of those
weird ones of one E two. They couldn't make bunnies,
they couldn't make easy shots, and they just couldn't find
the basket inkey moments. They shot under thirty nine percent
from the floor and they lost by four. If they
(46:49):
make just a couple of more of those Buckets. You're
talking about a victory against the Pistons, so coin flip
games in the first two. So nice to get a
couple of good, important blowout wins against the and Raptors
in the next two and then they'll be next in
action on Saturday seven o'clock here on Sports Talk seven
ninety against the Boston Celtics, who you're thinking, all right, no,
(47:09):
Jason Tatum, They're not very good. They lost their first
three games of the season, but then they blew out
the Pelicans and then they completely dismantled the Cavaliers on
Was it an NBC game or a Peacock game?
Speaker 1 (47:20):
I can't remember. Oh no, it was ESPN.
Speaker 2 (47:22):
Actually, sorry, on ESPN last night they beat them one
twenty five to one oh five. So a couple of
big wins for the Boston Celtics. That'll be interesting to
see as we go along with the Houston Rockets on
Saturday here on Sports Talk seven ninety seven one three
two one two five seven ninety is the phone number
if you want to get in seven one three two one.
Speaker 1 (47:41):
Two five seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (47:42):
You can also send tweets to at sports RV if
you want to interact with the show that way, and
also I would appreciate a follow on my Instagram at
sports RV there as well. Jose has been waiting patiently
on the phone lines. Let's go ahead and hear from him. Jose,
which gat.
Speaker 5 (48:00):
Yes, sir, good afternoons. Just a question, I'm not sure
if it's already been asked this morning, but when the
Dodgers lose tomorrow, we as Houstonians and Astros fans, well,
we have to still have to endure the annoying blue
dream nonsense podcast commercials that have been going on.
Speaker 1 (48:24):
Jose, I just want to let you know this.
Speaker 2 (48:27):
I'm one hundred percent with you, and we have a
couple of people who have complained and talked about that,
and it comes from national. Like if you've heard a
lot of our promos, there's all these podcasts that they're running.
Our company, of course, would never waste a dollar, So
these are great investments by our company. iHeartMedia, and they
run these promos nationally. I mean, just between you and
(48:51):
me and Jose, it's a little tone deaf to run
Dodgers blue podcast not only here, I mean if you're
running them in I don't know, New York work or
Florida or whatever.
Speaker 1 (49:01):
I haven't heard any.
Speaker 2 (49:02):
Other markets that they're running in because I only work
in this market. But yeah, we need to do away
with the Dodger Blue podcast promos.
Speaker 1 (49:08):
I'm with you, Jose.
Speaker 5 (49:10):
It's literally like someone scratching, yeah, the chalk board.
Speaker 1 (49:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (49:17):
I think they're gonna follow it up with the twenty
nineteen Golden twenty eighteen Golden State Warriors podcast and then
also the early nineties Buffalo Bills podcast I think is
next after that.
Speaker 5 (49:26):
Even better, even better, it gets better, all right, I
appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (49:30):
All right, thank you, and then Dame Lillard, all my
big shots, that podcast is.
Speaker 1 (49:35):
Coming after that. I mean, I love this company. I
love having a job. Please keep me employed. Iheartmeata Houston,
you're the best. But yeah, i'd say even like, it's
these national podcasts that our company pays for. So they're
gonna get run and they're gonna try to get money
(49:56):
back on their investment, and they're gonna want to get listeners.
And surely no every single.
Speaker 2 (50:01):
Person who listens to this station is a Houston Astros fan,
but very few of them are are Dodgers fans. I mean,
come on, man in Houston, it's it comes down from national.
We have to run it, guys. So it's not like
it's not being run here locally. There's not some dude
in our studios up here in the Dodgers hat talking
(50:23):
about Dodgers Blue and a Fernando vent of Valenzuela, Jersey
that that that's not happening. It comes from some dudes
in LA and it's a national promo and unfortunately we
are obligated to run it. So as soon as that
can get done. I mean, what are the other podcast
doozies we had? We like the John Wall podcast. We
had the soccer Oh, the women's soccer. Oh yes, yes, folks,
(50:47):
everybody listening to this podcast. It talks about how the
San Diego women's soccer team got founded. Okay, yeah, I
can't run to my phone fast enough and download that
bad boy. So we run step promos for random podcasts.
It's money invested from our company and High Top, their
ivory towers and their infinite wisdom have decided that we
(51:09):
should run Dodger Blue podcast promotions here in Houston, Texas. Yikes,
So please please don't take it as a strike against us.
Speaker 1 (51:20):
It's not.
Speaker 2 (51:20):
It's out of our control. We don't want to run them.
We don't like the Dodgers here in Houston. Say it
with me, Go Blue Jays, but yes they run, and
hopefully those promos stop running after the Yeah, but hopefully
the Dodgers can lose Game number six like eleven to
one that one. First of all, that'll make Jonathan Allen's
gut feeling correct.
Speaker 1 (51:37):
It'd be nice. Yes.
Speaker 2 (51:38):
Second of all, maybe that could be the end of
the Dodger Blue podcast promos. All right, quick break here
on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross without Matt Thomas.
You guys want to get in, you can phone lines open.
Seven to one three two one two five seven ninety
is the phone number if you want to just call
in and say, go Blue Jays. I'm okay with that too.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety. Your
thoughts on the Rockets second win we feeling? Are you saying,
(52:01):
wake me up until they beat a real team? Other
stuff to get to in the NFL and the sports world,
anything you guys want to get to seven one three
two one two five seven hoey. We also have I
just don't get it coming up at eleven thirty.
Speaker 1 (52:20):
All right, driving back me up on this. We did
not throw that in there on purpose.
Speaker 2 (52:26):
Guys talking about it's take it out. Now we have
we have to run those. We are obligated. I'm gonna
give you a little inside radio folks. Things, things that
show up in our little system as blue are things
that you have to have to run. Like it's basically
like a paid advertisement, like if you don't run, if
they don't run, somebody's gonna get in trouble. Things that
(52:50):
are like black in color normally like promos from from
our local in you can take out. You can move
around because sometimes you know, we we get off clock
or there's a live event like a like a sports game,
and we can move stuff around like these are are
there coded blue?
Speaker 1 (53:03):
That means we have to run them? And and then.
Speaker 2 (53:08):
Literally the guy calls in to complain, not complain, He's like, hey,
can we stop running these promos? Is yes, let's go
Blue Jays so we can stop running these Dodger blue
podcast promos. And honestly, I kind of tuned into that
one since I heard it. I'd normally tune it out.
And the guy the rings, baby rings. Okay, come on, dude,
(53:29):
if you want to be talking about a podcast of.
Speaker 1 (53:31):
Your team and rings and rings and rings.
Speaker 2 (53:33):
Dude, you got a three hundred and twenty one million
dollar payroll, Los Angeles Dodgers, you have like a billion
dollars in deferred contracts. Los Angeles Dodgers all the best
pitchers coming out of the Japanese professional league.
Speaker 1 (53:49):
It's basically like your straight.
Speaker 2 (53:51):
Up minor league system because many of them, because they
want to be closer to home because of a large
Asian fan basis, want to be on the West Coast
and want to be Los Angeles Dodgers. I mean, could
you have You also are in loss freaking Angelus. You
have a huge, huge TV deal that allows you all
this financial flexibility. I mean, how many more built in
(54:14):
advantages can the Los Angeles Dodgers freaking have.
Speaker 1 (54:18):
Now? They have a good farm system, they run a
good farm system.
Speaker 2 (54:21):
They made some good trades, but at the end of
the day, they could all those also just wallet whip
anyone and they have all these great advantages. You should
be winning the World Series every year. Rings baby, yeah, Rings, Okay, whatever,
that's ridiculous. This outspend everyone and have all your three
(54:44):
hundred to four hundred million dollar pittures on the mound,
and you have a unicorn in your stable in Shoho Tani,
who is one of the greatest hitters, one of the
five greatest hitters on the planet and probably one of
the greatest I don't know twenty pitchers on the planet.
It's it's insane. You should be winning. You should be
ashamed of yourself. Anytime you don't win the World Series,
(55:06):
go Blue Jays. So I'm sorry we have to run those.
They are, as I said, in their infinite wisdom. Our
higher ups from their ivory towers have paid money to
have that podcast produced and they want to get a
return on in their investment. So they're running plromos across
the country, including here in Houston, Texas. Seven one three
(55:28):
two one two five seven ninety is the phone number
if you want to get in seven one three two
one two five seven ninety. You can send tweets at
sports RV. You can follow me on Instagram at sports RV,
and we have I just don't get it coming up
in about six minutes. But right now, let's go Aha
and go to j W holding longest on the phone lines.
Speaker 1 (55:48):
What's up, j W. How you doing, Bud I'm doing
great what you got.
Speaker 6 (55:54):
I'd love to see what Toronto is doing. I cannot
stand the Dodgers.
Speaker 1 (55:59):
Oh, they're the worst, never have. Their fans are the worst,
and they're an evil empire. They are.
Speaker 2 (56:06):
They've taken over the Yankees quite frankly, in my mind,
they are the evil empire in baseball.
Speaker 6 (56:11):
I agree. Anyway, I wasn't talking about about the Dodgers, obviously,
but uh go Toronto. What what I'm calling about is
what's the chances with the Texans on Sunday?
Speaker 1 (56:28):
Uh? Well, they are favorite in the game. Are you
much of a Vegas line guy? J W.
Speaker 6 (56:33):
Don't do that at all?
Speaker 2 (56:34):
Okay, believe but you understand. Well that's probably smart on
your part. I'm just gonna say, but they are one
and a half point favorites. Do you know that That
means they're they're just slight favorites. You got to take
one and a half off their point total at the
end of the game. So Vegas sees them as very
slight favorites. For example, the biggest Packers are thirteen and
a half point favorites. Are the Panthers. That's I think
the biggest line on the board this weekend. No, I
(56:55):
lied Rams fourteen and a half over the Saints with
Tyler Shuck get his first start and on the road
against that Rams defense.
Speaker 1 (57:02):
Good luck Tyler Shuck. Oh my goodness.
Speaker 2 (57:05):
But yeah, one and a half point favorites are the
Texans over the Broncos.
Speaker 6 (57:10):
I'm just glad to see that that CJ's finally getting
his act together along with the rest of the team.
Speaker 2 (57:16):
Yeah, it's been a lot of confidence in the Vegas
wise in Texans the last couple of weeks. I mean,
I was sitting here saying last week when they were
favored against the forty nine ers, like, why the Niners
are good? I know Mac Jones hasn't been great, but
he's been pretty solid for them, and they had been
winning games. But if you look at the results of
that game, you look at the yards gained, you look
at first downs, they Vegas had the right favorite in
(57:38):
that game. The Texans dominated. Even though the final score
was they won by eleven, I mean, the margin of
victory could have been much bigger than that if the
Texans could get their act together in the red zone.
But stop me if you've heard that before. But they
had doubled them up on yards gained. They looked much better.
That defense Mac Jones said after the game is the
best in football, So I think that's kind of what
(57:58):
we're hoping for this weekend, although it's gonna be a
little bit of a tougher test because you got this
Bronco These Broncos coming in with one of the best
defensive lines in football and also one of the best
offensive lines. Run game has been pretty good with JK.
Dobbins and RJ. Harvey as a one two punch. Bo
Nicks has been very good and he can make some
things happen with his legs as well, which gave the
Texans fits if you look back to Baker Mayfield earlier
(58:21):
in the year and how he was able to make
plays making some scrambles.
Speaker 1 (58:24):
So it'll be.
Speaker 2 (58:25):
An interesting one basically Vegas thing. It's a toss up game,
and thirty nine and a half is a very low total,
so they're implied their implied final is basically like twenty
one to nineteen.
Speaker 7 (58:39):
I hope it didn't go to their head and hope
they play the game.
Speaker 6 (58:41):
Nah.
Speaker 2 (58:42):
Yeah, they're not worried about that. Demiko Ryan, thank you, JW.
Appreciate you. Appreciate you getting in and making the call. Yeah,
Demiko Ryans isn't like all right, guys, Vegas has this
says one and a half point favorites this week. So
we got, we got, we gotta take it on easy street.
We're all good practice. Yeah, we don't have to worry
about it. Nah, it isn't. At least a couple of
(59:04):
years ago, it'd be easier for me to say players
aren't paying attention to the spreads at all, But they are,
and it just gives you an idea. I don't think
that's really preventing anyone from not putting in the work.
I think it was. Was it Jerry Judy early on
when the Browns were like ten and a half point
dogs to the Ravens and he's like, at the end
of the day, that's disrespectful, that's disrespectful, and then they
(59:26):
lost by like twenty. But yeah, it doesn't it's not
going to make them not work any harder. In my opinion,
it's certainly not going to make them not coach any harder.
They know that this Broncos team is good. You see
Texans three and four, you see Broncos six and two.
You got to take care of business in your house
against this Bronco squad. I don't know if the Texans
will offensive line has been playing a little bit better.
(59:48):
What did we have them at was it twenty sixth
I think? But Jonathan on the Pro Football Focus now,
of course, always throw in the caveat because there's been
a lot of argument about this Football Focus grets don't
mean anything. I think for the most part, they are
extremely unreliable. They can be extremely unreliable with for example, quarterbacks.
They don't know what Reid one was. They don't know,
(01:00:11):
you know, if a wide receiver ran the wrong route.
Same thing with those guys. But to me, I feel
like it's fairly reliable when it comes to offensive and
defensive lines. Like you can see what kind of the
sets the offensive line, and also those guys have miscommunications
and they allow free runners and stuff like that. So
there's always a gray area. It's not an end all,
be all with Pro Football Focus.
Speaker 1 (01:00:31):
But they have the.
Speaker 2 (01:00:32):
Colts with them as the best offensive line in football.
I mean, I think it's hard to argue with that.
And they have the Broncos at the number two offensive
line in football, and I mean, yeah, the eye test
tells you that those are two of the best offensive
lines in the league. And then they had the Texans
at twenty six. So they've been improving. They started the
season at thirty two. They've been getting better and better.
(01:00:54):
In another home game, the protections have held up a
lot better at home because you can run into communication
any any any offensive line can run into communication issues
on the road, especially one when you're kind of moving
the guys around. You got a lot of new guys
in the fold, and early on in the season there
was a lot of miss blocks, especially on the road
against the Rams and the Jaguars. And they have been better.
(01:01:16):
They've been winning three of their last four, and the
protection was pretty solid. Some good pockets against the forty
nine ers. Not a coincidence that CJ. Stroud has had
his best game of the season, and you're hoping that
can happen with this this game this coming weekend against
the Broncos. But they have some better pass rushers than
(01:01:36):
do the San Francisco forty nine Ers. Every week, every
game can be different and can go any number of
different ways. We'll see what happens this weekend at NRG Stadium.
It would be the biggest statement of the year. If
the Texans can not only win, but that'd be winning
the four of their last five and that would square
their record up at four piece, then we're really talking
(01:01:57):
about them being in a wildcard race. And we got
a lot of ways to go for them to be
in the division race, because right now the Indianapolis Colts
are not only leading the division, they're the number one
seed in the AFC at seven and one seven one
three two one two five.
Speaker 1 (01:02:16):
Seven ninety is the phone number? Is there something you
just don't understand, something you're seeing happening, something you're seeing
all over the place, or just something that happened to you.
Speaker 2 (01:02:25):
I don't get it. What's going on there? Talk to
myself and Jonathan about it. We'll tell you if we
get it. Seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
What don't you get seven one three two one two
five seven ninety. That's next here on Sports Talk seven
ninety of the Matt Toms Show with Ross.
Speaker 1 (01:02:47):
Do you have something in your life.
Speaker 14 (01:02:49):
That you just don't get No need to worry, no
need to We will just does the topics, just see
if we comprehend the things that they can use on
Brandon's time.
Speaker 1 (01:03:00):
I just don't get it. Eleven to thirty three in
the am. Here on Sports Talk seven ninety, it is
a Matt Thomas show with Ross Without Matt Thomas. He
(01:03:23):
is out, and right now.
Speaker 2 (01:03:25):
We have our Thursday Staples segment. I just don't get it.
Is there something you don't understand? What the heck is
that guy doing? Why does this always happen? X y
Z seven one three two one two five seven ninety
is the phone number seven one three two one two
five seven ninety if you would like to get in
(01:03:46):
all right now, I'll go ahead and start.
Speaker 1 (01:03:47):
Jonathan, go ahead, let's put you go now.
Speaker 5 (01:03:49):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:03:50):
Do you play much fantasy football? No?
Speaker 2 (01:03:52):
No, no, I'm gonna play you have you before? No, I've
never You've never played. Do you understand how it works?
Speaker 1 (01:03:57):
Though? Right? Yes?
Speaker 12 (01:03:57):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:03:58):
Good?
Speaker 5 (01:03:58):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (01:03:58):
So normally ten yards rushing is one point six points
as a touchdown, stuff like that, So I would I'm
in a few fantasy football leagues, and just before the
season was started, a friend of ours, friend of the station,
asked me to join his friends league because somebody had
dropped up in the last moment. And I'm like, all right, sure, whatever.
(01:04:19):
And sometimes again, I don't know how relatable this is
for you, Jonathan, but it's relatable for some of the
people out there. Sometimes you join a league at the
last second and you didn't kind of fully brush up
on the rules, and you're like, what the heck is
this Like? For example, I've joined a league where you
get points for return yards, okay, and that's very out
of the ordinary in this league. Yeah, every league kind
(01:04:41):
of has different rules. Now, for example, you get one, well,
you get one full point per for receptions for a receiver,
which I don't like. I like the half point old school.
Back in the day, you did zero point. This is
where point PPR came in. Will they say PPR when
you're hearing Doctor Rode point per reception because in the
old days, fantasy football was dominated by running backs because
(01:05:03):
everybody would run the rock, and so the receivers were
at a disadvantage. So they added in a full point
per reception and that game that made wide receivers more
viable and draftable and playable. Nowadays, it's a passing league,
so full point per reception is ridiculous. You can have
some slot receiver who gets seven catches for thirty seven
(01:05:23):
yards and that's ten points. Like, that's ridiculous. So I
like half point. It's a nice happy medium, So I
go with a half point. But anyways, I'm in this
league that I joined last minute. You get six points
for a rushing touchdown or receiving touchdown, which is normal.
You get an extra full six points for a touchdown
(01:05:45):
over forty yards. Okay, So last week in my matchup,
and I have Saquon Barkley and he went off for
a long touchdown. I was playing against Jonathan Taylor. He
had a long touchdown, and some other like me, and
this guy scored two hundred Normally, like a good fantasy
football scor is like one.
Speaker 1 (01:06:05):
Hundred and forty. I scored two hundred and forty points
and this guy scored like two hundred points. I don't
get these leagues with all these crazy ass like points systems. Hey,
these feel like you're throwing in And now I'm happy
that I won, and I'm five and three in this league.
I'm doing all right, But I mean, man, what I
(01:06:26):
don't get why these people go with these crazy You
get points per a first down. I'm in some other
league where you get points per completion for quarterbacks. I
don't get all these fantasy football teams and leagues that
people are running with all these rogue these rogue rules.
Now I get it.
Speaker 2 (01:06:43):
A lot of them are like, yeah, well, we formed
the league in nineteen ninety six, and we guess kind of.
I don't know, that's how we've always done it.
Speaker 1 (01:06:49):
Okay, it's twenty twenty five. It's time to update.
Speaker 2 (01:06:53):
We don't need six point touchdowns and points per completions
and returns.
Speaker 1 (01:06:58):
Yeah, exactly, I didn't.
Speaker 2 (01:07:00):
I didn't go through a fine tooth comb for all
the rules. I mean, I read the rules, but I
didn't see this six point touchdown. Not that it would
have changed the draft much of any But do you
people and you fantasy commissions with your crazy wacky rules.
Speaker 1 (01:07:15):
I don't get you.
Speaker 8 (01:07:18):
You know, I don't get that either. I mean, I
don't know if fantasy football like that, but yeah, I don't.
I don't you play any fantasy sports basketball? No, dude,
are you one of those guys.
Speaker 1 (01:07:26):
It's like a former athlete and you're like, oh, no,
I don't play fantasy sports. I play real sports. Not
I play real play real sports.
Speaker 8 (01:07:32):
That was the type because like Okay, you go around
his athletes, You're like, I'll I'll do a parlay every
now and then, but I'm not going to invest.
Speaker 5 (01:07:39):
You know that.
Speaker 1 (01:07:40):
Oh you just code nine to eighty seven with Draft
Kings pick six for fifty dollars in play with just
a five dollars sign up our five dollars entry. Yeah,
because we've had a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:07:50):
Of former football players up here at Sports Talk seven ninety,
we've had well, Greg Cook would play. Actually kudos to
Greg Cook until he dropped that last minute, last second.
I'm still mad at Hi about that last year. But anyways, uh.
Speaker 1 (01:08:01):
Yeah, any clue, Like, no, man, I don't play I
don't play fantasy football. I play real football, all right,
Indy whatever. And Sean Salisbury didn't say that, but he
wouldn't play the league either, And I think I think
Sean Jones said the same thing to us as well.
Speaker 2 (01:08:13):
He's like, no, man, I'll play real football. I had
one hundred and eleven sacks or whatever he had, Like
Sean Jones had a lot of sacks. By the way,
you look at the all time sackle list, he's up there.
He's like, no, man, I play real football. I'm not
playing a little fantasy foosball and I get involved in that,
like all right, sorry, okay, tough guy. Yeah, I was
trying to just trying to have a little fun, build
a community, had money. Yeah, fours sook seven ninety. I'm
trying to take your money. Oh I'm doing torrible this year.
I'm two and six. Oh yeah, okay, all right, John,
(01:08:36):
What don't you get? And you want to get in
something you don't get? Seven one three two one two
five seven ninety is the phone number? Seven one three
two one two five seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (01:08:45):
You know? Are they? This week?
Speaker 8 (01:08:46):
Uh de Miko had a presser for just about the
about the game with forty nine ers and everything, and
how he was saying about the outside noise and everything
and just saying that he doesn't care about the negative
or the positive, like we're still gonna do our thing.
Speaker 1 (01:09:00):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 8 (01:09:01):
What I didn't understand and I still don't get why
the reporters took it as a personal attack when he
came back to Houston had the pressor I don't And
if y'all didn't hear the clip, I should have had
it ready. But they basically are saying like we've gave
you all this positive reputation, like reputation in the last
two years. This is the only negative criticism you've ever gotten.
(01:09:22):
Why are you saying, we don't talk good about you?
But he didn't say that at all. He was just
saying that his team is good no matter what who
says what, We're gonna do our thing and we're gonna
keep progressing and going to practice and doing our daily routine.
These reporters jump on him, ruin the entire comm pressure, honestly,
and ruin his entire mood. And I just don't understand.
(01:09:43):
As a professional media, professional journalist, you're not supposed to
go and attack almost really attack your your client like
you're you know, the person you're trying to And I
just don't.
Speaker 1 (01:09:53):
That was very unprofessional, Like it was just like yeah,
and you good. It was like and then he said
it again, like and just shut them up. And I
don't see back.
Speaker 2 (01:10:06):
I can definitely get because well, this is the thing.
First of all, Demiko Ryan's was clearly sensitive about it.
Always it's like you gotta take the good with the bad,
And honestly, there you hear more about the good I
excuse me bad and the beat you can hear ten.
And this this goes for for anybody, for myself and
media as well, Like you know, ten people will tweet
(01:10:27):
me and that was the greatest thing I ever heard
ross So that was great. The show's funny, or that's hilarious,
or they make a joke, and then one guy's like,
you're an idiot for staying this and and that's kind
of that's by human nature that sometimes want to end
up harp. I'm getting better and better in this, especially
in the last couple of weeks as my media career
goes along at having thicker skin, which I have gotten
way better at, and it doesn't affect me nearly as
(01:10:48):
much as it did early in my career, to where yeah,
you can hear ten positive things that one negative thing
is is gonna be the thing that tears you down.
That's anybody and you know, uh in the world. But
they weren't even ten girls tell you you're handsome. You're like,
that's cool, that's great, and one's like, now you're not
that not for me, and you're like what you freak out?
Speaker 8 (01:11:07):
But it's like but then the Miko wasn't saying he
was saying just the media in general. But I don't
know he nowhere was he saying the local media or
these two guys are you know, talking down on me
like they think that they can play football they know
football more than me.
Speaker 1 (01:11:21):
He wasn't saying any of that.
Speaker 8 (01:11:22):
He was just saying that his team is good, don't
worry about and I don't understand why.
Speaker 1 (01:11:25):
It the person Jamiko Ryans.
Speaker 2 (01:11:27):
No, he was like, yeah, we don't do you know,
negative noise been a lot of negative noise, like he
he was twisting the knife when they won that game.
If you listen to like the postgame comments, Demiko Ryans
definitely had heard the noise and quite frankly, the new
the noise was warranted. You were start of the season
oh and three with three one score losses. Anything, excuse me,
(01:11:47):
anything's gonna be frustrating in the season to watch. If
you get blown out, now people get get mad about that,
but it's also extremely frustrating to where these little things.
Quite frankly, coach Jamiko Ryans wasn't doing little things, and
they're you know, they're kicking balls out of bounds or
using timeouts at the wrong time, and they're they're wasting
clock at the end of halves and all these little
things that they're doing wrong, they can cost you in
(01:12:08):
one score games.
Speaker 1 (01:12:09):
The criticism was fair, the criticism was warranted.
Speaker 2 (01:12:13):
And and then Demiko Ryans, of course, I don't know
if I don't know Demico Ryans, I don't know if
he's got rabbit ears. I don't know if he's reading
all the tea leaves and all this stuff, or he's
hearing from his buddies or whoever or whatever. Clearly the
noise was getting to him, and now they won three
out of four, and it was his time to.
Speaker 1 (01:12:30):
Push back on it. You can't push back on it
when you lost three in a row.
Speaker 2 (01:12:33):
So he was pushing back, and then then the media
members but pushed back.
Speaker 1 (01:12:38):
I get it now.
Speaker 2 (01:12:39):
It probably didn't feel like the time or place, but
but what he was saying that all the person was
doing was refuting what Demko Ryan was saying.
Speaker 1 (01:12:47):
Okay, we we get negative. I kind of get both sides.
Speaker 8 (01:12:50):
And you explained it that I kind of get it,
like both sides. I just don't see it. And like
you say it, maybe it was well.
Speaker 2 (01:12:56):
We can break down the audio and then kind of
go from there because it was interesting.
Speaker 1 (01:13:00):
It's just more like why why at that.
Speaker 8 (01:13:02):
Moment do you feel like you need to check him
on the presser And because it was two people that
were like, what do you mean we say this, this
and this, like okay, now you immediately look guilty, that's
what he goes and says. He's like, oh, we find
the negative people here already. Yeah, And it was almost
like you said, Dimiko was trying to like twist a
knife and find out who was doing that, or.
Speaker 1 (01:13:20):
Like, yeah, he knew already. It's an interesting dynamic.
Speaker 2 (01:13:23):
Yeah, we can play that video and I mean play
that audio and then go from there and kind of
break it down.
Speaker 1 (01:13:27):
But we do have to get to a break.
Speaker 2 (01:13:29):
Anything you don't get seven one three, two one two five,
seven ninety the phone Nuber a couple of hours sending
me your crazy ass fantasy football scoring dude. I'll read
this in the next segment. Thirteen sixty one to fifteen eleven.
What the what the heck?
Speaker 1 (01:13:45):
Is this? All right, We're we're gonna take a break.
Speaker 7 (01:13:48):
You know what.
Speaker 2 (01:13:48):
I'll take your screenshots of your weird fantasy scoring at
at sports RV if you want to, If you want
to send those my way, we'll get to that and
you guys talking about your fantasy football all leagues as well.
Speaker 1 (01:14:01):
We also have some more I just don't get it.
Speaker 2 (01:14:03):

Speaker 12 (01:14:58):

Speaker 2 (01:14:59):

fantasy football things you guys sent to me at sports RV.

can also follow me on Instagram at sports RV I
will follow you back for the next till twelve thirty.
If you follow me on sports RV at Instagram, I
would truly appreciate it. Trying to get my followership up there.
(01:15:19):
All right, anyways, Sorry, I'm having some audio issues in
my ear, but I think everything's okay. So here we go.
Fantasy football league from Tom. This is a free bizarro league.
Three starting quarterbacks and two super flex quarterbacks. Does that
mean you get five quarterbacks?
Speaker 1 (01:15:39):
Sounds like so every I mean, there's only thirty two
starting quarterbacks every week. How many people are in this league?
So he shows me. He shows me the the matchup
from last week, thirteen sixty one. As I told you, Jonathan,
a normal scoring is like, you know, one hundred twenty
(01:16:00):
to one hundred and ten or something like that, right,
depending on the league. Maybe if it's a full PPR
one hundred and forty something like that, this is fifteen
hundred and eleven points.
Speaker 2 (01:16:08):
Somebody scoring it gets fifteen hundred, yes, thirteen sixty one.
They've got to have some kind of other wonky scoring. Okay,
it's a six person league. Tom got back to me
and responded, so, yeah, six people, you start five. That's
thirty and I guess you got you gotta like keep
everybody's back up on your squad.
Speaker 1 (01:16:27):
I don't know what the heck is going on there.
And then there was another one from Sam Ross.
Speaker 2 (01:16:31):
What are your thoughts on the max number of ADS
or a fantasy football season. There's controversy in my league
over a guy who's upset the max ADS won't be
increased because he's reached the max already. It's thirty. By
the way, you know what this sounds like a segment
we should do. We should do final a fantasy football
judge or fantasy football court. Okay where Matt no, whenever
(01:16:53):
Mac comes back, Matt and I can be the judges
or the We can have a three person panel. Actually
we have a three person jet. Well, you don't really
do fantasy football, say, I don't know if many dog hmmm.
Speaker 1 (01:17:05):
Hmmm.
Speaker 2 (01:17:07):
Where people people could bring us their fantasy football like
they want to v to a trade or they have
some sort of issue with the fantasy football some guys
skirting the rules, and then we could be the I
like this, I need to write this down. Let me
talk to about this with with Matt Thomas fantasy fantasy football.
What we call it fantasy football court f f court. No,
(01:17:29):
that sounds weird. Fantasy court. Okay, I like that, but
then that that sounds like and then of course, yeah,
then Matt would start talking about Valerie Burtonelli or something
weird like that, start bringing up a bunch of women
that were in in sitcoms in the seventies.
Speaker 1 (01:17:43):
But we'll do.
Speaker 2 (01:17:44):
Make sure you throw fantasy football in there, or if
you can come up with a snazzier name, tweet me
at sports Harvy. We should do fantasy football court, or
we could play uh here we go. Hold on, let me,
let me try to find this, Jonathan. You've talked for
five seconds.
Speaker 8 (01:17:57):
Fantasy court. What do you think, guys? Let's say something
flashy though, like you know, what can we do?
Speaker 1 (01:18:04):
Maybe m.
Speaker 8 (01:18:07):
I wish I can hear y'all know y'all's talking dear
radios right now. Fantasy I can't say. I feel like
we can't say fantasy in the first started. We have
to like switch up the name. It can't be the
Spanish court. It's gotta be something like bizarre court. I
know you heard the uh something that's something that's a
cinnamon for bizarre or like different or weird.
Speaker 1 (01:18:24):
I can't find this. We have the lawn order them somewhere,
the lawn order. Yeah, I have to find that. Okay, Yeah,
you find that and then yeah we wee. So you
find the law and order music. Oh, Commissioner's court, Ryan
with a good tweet like I like that. Although we're
not the commissioners of the league. Commissioner's court. That works.
Speaker 2 (01:18:44):
We'll we'll go ahead and we'll we'll we'll brainstorm these
This guy says he has stroud panics. Allen Mayer Darton hurts, Dang,
that sounds like a squad in this quarterback league. Okay, anyways,
question from Sam, So the guy is upset the ads
won't be increased.
Speaker 1 (01:19:01):
Yes, thank you. This is why we pay you the
big bucks. Jonathan.
Speaker 2 (01:19:06):
Fantasy Football court is in session here on Sports Talk
seven ninety. Question in from Sam maximum number of ads
for a fantasy football season. Controversy in the league over
a guy who's upset that the max ads will not
be increased because he's reached the max already.
Speaker 1 (01:19:23):
It is thirty. Now, thirty is a lot of moves.
I'm going to go to the league. I'm in right now.
Speaker 2 (01:19:33):
With everybody here in fantasy football. I have the most moves.
See I'm two and six, folks, but I'm trying. I
didn't realize normally a quanta given year. Quite frankly, I
have the most moves. I'm always changing defenses and tight
ends and kickers. I'm trying to maximize my odds every week. Jonathan,
this is I'm putting you on here about how to
how to win. Even though I'm two and six, I'm
(01:19:54):
always going, uh yeah, I'm five and three of my
other league, and I'm also leading in points. But I
am back to back to work league champion. It's just
not going my way. I had a horrible draft and
I've suffered injuries. Other than that, it has been great.
So I have the most moves in the league right
now with twenty five. Second most league moves is Trey
with twenty So this Sam says the max is thirty.
(01:20:15):
Quite frankly, for a full season. That's about two moves
a week. That's not crazy, week's crazy. That sounds reasonable.
That sounds reasonable. And then I asked him a very
important question. Does did the guy know the rules beforehand?
And Sam says yes, But I also wanted to know
(01:20:36):
what would be your recommention recommendation for max ads in
the season in your ideal league. So I am the
commissioner of two different leagues and I have no max ads.
But I understand some people do like this, Jonathan. They'll
do a dollar a.
Speaker 1 (01:20:48):
Move, so you make as many moves as you want,
but it's gonna cost you a dollar. Also, some people
do auction leagues.
Speaker 2 (01:20:54):
For example, this week the hot pickup on waivers with
Tyrone Tracy the running back for the Giants because Cam
Sketeg Sam Sketeg got hurt, so Tyrone Tracy becomes a
free first team running back. So they What other people
do is they have one hundred dollars budget for the
season and you bid on it. So you can bid
(01:21:15):
big early or you can kind of wait for middle
of the season and then you can bid on guys
and it's like a silent auction. Whoever bids the most
Wednesday morning, they win it. I like that system I've
talked to, but now I am also a commissioner that
listens to my people. We haven't wanted to move to
an auction league, so we haven't done that, so which
I would be in down for moving to an auction league.
(01:21:35):
I think they're very fun rather than a straight up
draft where you auction off players. But so I do
the league. I'm commissioner of both of them. It's just unlimited.
You do whatever you want, You put in as many
moves as you want. It's not a big deal. So
I prefer unlimited. If you want to limit it to thirty,
I get it. As long as everyone's clear on the
(01:21:57):
rules pre season. I can see it being limited if
with a lot of people in that league. Yeah, I mean, yeah,
you know that's another question. Yeah, how many time? How
many team league is this?
Speaker 1 (01:22:06):
Sam?
Speaker 2 (01:22:06):
If you're listening, I'd say unlimited. If you want a
limited at thirty, that's I guess. Okay, that feels a
little low to me because I'm somebody that's twenty five already.
Let me go to this other league. This other league.
Though I had a pretty good draft, I haven't been
making any too many moves. I've had a million injries.
See that's the thing too, i had a bad draft
and a million injuries. That's why I've already had like
(01:22:27):
twenty five moves. This other league, I've got fourteen moves.
There's a guy with thirty two moves. If you end
up with a bunch of injuries, no, thirty No, now
that I think about it, If you have a bad
draft and a bunch of injuries, thirty is not enough.
Speaker 1 (01:22:40):
What would you So what would you say? How about
you do it?
Speaker 2 (01:22:42):
You up to twenty five or something and then everyone
you want after that's a dollar?
Speaker 1 (01:22:48):
What do you think? Well, if you are depending on
how much your league is, what if you're only a
ten dollars league, that's well.
Speaker 2 (01:22:53):
If you're in a twenty dollar league with the boys
and all of a sudden become one hundred dollars league,
they could be in like what I.
Speaker 8 (01:22:59):
Know, you can to like a thousand dollars leagues. They
do well, they do, Yeah, they do hundreds and hundreds
of dollars. So yeah, I mean like thousands and thousands
of dollars. Somebody doctor Roto told us he's in like
five thousand dollars leagues and stuff with his buddies, Like
he's taking it way too seriously.
Speaker 1 (01:23:12):
No way, Well, I mean that's also part of this.
I mean he's very good.
Speaker 2 (01:23:15):
He ends up in a lot of championships and wins
them because he's doctor Roto. So I say, thirty is
a little too low, especially if you're somebody who you
can run into a ton of injuries like dude in
this one league I got six players are questionable right now,
I mean you got to make moves.
Speaker 1 (01:23:31):
Six thirty is too low.
Speaker 2 (01:23:34):
I would say make it like thirty and minutes a
dollar afterwards.
Speaker 1 (01:23:38):
But as far as this guy, if.
Speaker 2 (01:23:39):
He knew the rules beforehand, if he knew that it
is u a thirty league is a limit, and he's
bitching about it. Sorry, buddy, tough. You know what the
rules are? The rules, Yeah, exactly. He doesn't want to
be locked in in week nine. You should have said
something beforehand, and maybe he did. I don't know the
details from Sam, but the rules are the rules, pal,
(01:24:04):
this guy doesn't get any sort of leeway unless the
commissioner wants to go ahead and okay, eighteen league, Yeah,
thirty moves is a lot for an eight team league.
You don't normally You normally got pretty deep benches in
pretty good players.
Speaker 1 (01:24:18):
Now, I'd say thirty is still too few, too few moves.
Speaker 2 (01:24:21):
But if those are the rules of the rules, so
this guy has no recourse. In my opinion, the judge
has dismissed his case. He's got no case.
Speaker 1 (01:24:29):
He cannot. I need to gabble. We have one of
those we had. It's uh.
Speaker 8 (01:24:36):
Try to play it because I have this song on
I know we gotta tell him about this.
Speaker 1 (01:24:40):
I actually like to say, miss yeah, oh, here we go.
Here Pruss, play on that. There we go.
Speaker 2 (01:24:48):
Okay, okay, okay, case dismissed, case dismissed.
Speaker 1 (01:24:52):
Those are the rules. You knew you got into it.
Speaker 2 (01:24:55):
You can petition the commissioner after the season, but no, sir,
no sir, you don't get to make any more moves.
Speaker 1 (01:25:01):
Tough, you know what? All right, quick break here on
The Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 2 (01:25:04):
You guys want to get in you can seven one
three two one two five seven ninety seven one three two,
one two five seven ninety News at noon coming up next.
We also got some more comments on this fantasy football court.
We'll get to those as well. Adam Wexer joining at
one o'clock. It is The Matt Thomas Show with Ross
without Matt Thomas with you until two is The Matt
(01:25:25):
Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 1 (01:25:38):
Yeah Reconi thirty nine one twenty one Houston over Toronto,
Oh Drake in attendance. Whoa, oh, I was loud Drake
in attendance for the Rockets victory over the Toronto Raptors.
(01:26:02):
So I had to start with a little little Drake trophies.
The Rockets are looking for one thirty victory over the Raptors,
their second win in a row.
Speaker 2 (01:26:12):
We can talk about that. We do have to get
to the news and new but people are calling in.
What's some more? They want some commissioner's court. Shout out
to Ryan. I think that that's what we're gonna go with.
Speaker 1 (01:26:21):
Right, that sounds the best, right, Betsey Football Court is
a little wordy. It's got the alliteration commissioner's court. I
like this commissioner's court, folks is in session here.
Speaker 2 (01:26:32):
On Sports Talk seven eight. Yes, oh man, this is great.
Speaker 1 (01:26:40):
Okay, So we have some key people.
Speaker 2 (01:26:42):
Do do they need rulings and Commissioner's court, Jonathan or
do they have names for the segment?
Speaker 1 (01:26:45):
I think Jill had an idea.
Speaker 8 (01:26:47):
Oh okay, Andy has something about like fantasy like this.
Speaker 1 (01:26:50):
Okay, So we were doing this in the last segment.
Speaker 2 (01:26:52):
If you're not aware, we had a fantasy football question
from somebody. Sam said that there's somebody in his league.
He got over thirty trends, he's got already transactions, already
hit his limit, and he wants more.
Speaker 1 (01:27:04):
And I say, if you knew the rules beforehand, that's tough. Bleep.
I'm sorry, I told you work league. I'm already at
twenty five. I'm gonna go well over thirty. It's not
eve gonna be. I still have to get a quarterback.
So that's gonna be twenty six. If you get hit
by injuries and and you like to stream either a quarterback,
which sometimes I do it depending on the year, or whatever.
(01:27:25):
Streaming defenses tight ends quarterbacks, you go over thirty easily.
Speaker 2 (01:27:29):
But if that's the limit, that's the limit, folks. So
I'm sorry, Sam, we had to rule against the man
in his league. And now Gio wants to jie, you
got just a name for the quarter what you did?
You have a question for the for the judge.
Speaker 4 (01:27:44):
So I got a question, man. So I co manage
the league with one of my family members. And this
is a sixteen team league. One sixteen okay, sixteen man,
And so last year we did the priority waiver, you know,
the traditional waiver pick up things like that.
Speaker 1 (01:28:02):
But for whatever the person who's in last place gets
first priority.
Speaker 4 (01:28:06):
Precisely, but then there would there would be times where
the person who's in last place wouldn't get priority picked up.
It'll be the guy who's on like a five game
win streak. So we didn't know what was going on.
So for that reason we went we cut waiver wires,
and now two a m. Every Tuesday, it's a free
for all.
Speaker 12 (01:28:25):
And we got you got one.
Speaker 1 (01:28:28):
Ye.
Speaker 4 (01:28:29):
Yeah. We have some people complaining about it, and we
have some people who love it. So I just wanted
to get your ruling on that.
Speaker 1 (01:28:35):
Oh, was it put to a vote or the commissioner.
Speaker 5 (01:28:38):
Put to a vote?
Speaker 4 (01:28:39):
Okay, put to a vote and a majority ruled, and
we kept it that way.
Speaker 2 (01:28:44):
Okay, another another quick question. It was put to a vote,
majority ruled. And that was before the season started, right,
so people could have backed out.
Speaker 4 (01:28:50):
Yes, yes, because last season we had problems with the
priority waivers, so before the season even started, we put
it to a vote.
Speaker 1 (01:28:57):
All right, you know what? Yeah, I mean that's the
ruling stands.
Speaker 2 (01:29:01):
If you put it to a vote, majority rules, and
then you knew the rules before you ended the league.
You call on Wednesday and tell them to shut their
bumb ass up, Joe, right on, all right, I appreciate it. Yeah,
I mean, yeah, shut your bumb ass up. If you
knew the rules, good, that's that's gonna be a theme
I think in this in this segment Commissioner's Court, if
(01:29:23):
you knew the rules before, like for example, I didn't know,
and I'm not com I was talking about this is
how this all came up.
Speaker 1 (01:29:28):
We did. I just don't get it.
Speaker 2 (01:29:29):
And now I'm in a league where you get six
extra points for a forty yard touchdown and then the
points are going up like freaking ping pong balls.
Speaker 1 (01:29:38):
But hey, I read the rules. It's on me. It's
on me. I can complain and say, what's up with
this weird scoring? And then you get like half a
point for a first down rushing and first down receiving.
Speaker 2 (01:29:47):
It's weird, but hey, it's on me to read the
rules to come through the rules when I agree to
join the league. So I'm not blaming anybody else on
that one. Uh And same thing there in Geo's league
two am free for all.
Speaker 1 (01:30:01):
So do you know what waivers means?
Speaker 8 (01:30:02):
Jonathan, I'm getting I'm getting the gist of it, Like you,
so you can't pick up you pick up players.
Speaker 2 (01:30:06):
For example, Camp Scatigy, who goes this week? The hot
pickup is Tyrone Tracy. Normally, leagues run waivers like at
three am on Wednesdays and you put a claim in. Now,
it's like, for example, when when a player is let
go off of an NFL team or a Major League
Baseball team, you get to claim them on waivers and
it goes in invorse order of the standings. Last place
(01:30:28):
team gets first priority and it resets every week. Okay, okay,
So what they're doing, which some people do, and I've
heard of this before, I just don't do that because
I don't want to be up at three am, Like
you gotta want it, Like, okay, you want Tyrone Tracy.
If your team's hurting, you want a guy that's probably
gonna get, you know, fifteen to twenty five touches this.
Speaker 1 (01:30:45):
Weekend and be an RB one.
Speaker 2 (01:30:47):
And if you get an RB one plapped up, plopped
in the middle of your lap in the middle of
the season, that's a great asset for you.
Speaker 1 (01:30:53):
So if you really want them, get up at two
am or till two am and you make the moves.
That's kind of crazy from GEO. But I've heard of
that before, so I'm on GEO side. If it was
put to a vote and majority ruled on that, now
next year they want want to vote on that again
and say that was stupid. I don't want to do that. Yeah, exactly.
(01:31:14):
Somebody's like falling asleep at work and getting in trouble
with their boss. Hey, many, what's going on? Sorry? I
was picking up the Broncos defense at two am. Man,
I'm tired. It's got to move. Yeah, it's got to
be went down. I had to do it.
Speaker 2 (01:31:28):
Yeah, So that's a little extreme for me, but I
have heard of that before. But rule of the rules,
I'm sorry, we have to rule in favor of the
majority on that.
Speaker 1 (01:31:37):
All right, Andy, go ahead?
Speaker 9 (01:31:40):
Hey, hey guys, how's it going.
Speaker 1 (01:31:42):
What's up?
Speaker 8 (01:31:44):
Hey?
Speaker 9 (01:31:44):
I haven't played fantasy football in a lot of years.
But as far as the moves go per week, what
if you did like ten to twelve moves every four
weeks and either you lose them or use them.
Speaker 1 (01:32:01):
Okay, well they can pile up. That's interesting. I don't know.
I don't know if you're gonna find a website that
does that. Go ahead, But you only get to.
Speaker 9 (01:32:10):
Use those picks for that four weeks, okay, and then
at the end of the then weeks five through eight.
Speaker 1 (01:32:15):
I got you, So you got it. You can't accumulate.
Speaker 9 (01:32:19):
No, you can't accumulate. And you know, if you have
an injury or something comes up in those four weeks,
you got some moves you can make and start back
over the next four weeks.
Speaker 7 (01:32:33):
Hmm the thought.
Speaker 1 (01:32:34):
Yeah, all right, thanks Andy, I appreciate it.
Speaker 15 (01:32:37):
No.
Speaker 2 (01:32:37):
Oh, look, and I'm probably being biased here, Jonathan, because
I told you I already got twenty five moves. And yeah,
I'll say, hey, when my team is underwater, I'm wheeling
and dealing. I'm picking up like I picked up Woody
Marks before he busted out. I pick up like I got. Look,
this is how bad my team is. I'm starting Woody
Marks and Bam night this week. Okay, like I gotta.
(01:33:00):
I got Jalen Knowle on my bench. Okay, I'm down bad.
I make a lot of moves. I kind of take
the shotgun approach, all right. I take a shot at
everything and then hopefully one or two of them works out.
That's my that's my approach. When I'm either a beset
by injuries or b had a bad draft and got
to figure something out. I make a ton of moves,
and I'm all almost always streaming defenses right now. I've
(01:33:22):
had brock Party hurt, so I've had to start. These
are quarterbacks I've had to start in the last few weeks.
I've had to start Joe Flacco. I had to start
Trevor Lawrence early on in the season. So I mean, yeah,
times is tough, folks. Okay, I had started Sam Darnold
a couple of weeks ago. I've started like five different
quarterbacks because brock Perty has been hurt all year, and
I want to play the best quarterback in a week
(01:33:43):
week matchup. Tight ends, you gotta play. I mean, you
get you hit, get hit with buys, you get hit
with injuries. I don't think thirties enough at all. But
to each his own. And again, I'm biased because I
like to make a lot of moves. That's just how
I roll.
Speaker 1 (01:33:55):
I How do you end the segment? What's your thing about? Oh?
Like Commissioner's Court, Now that's fine, Uh, Commissioner's Court all rise,
Commissioner's Court is no longer in session. And then then you.
Speaker 5 (01:34:08):
Got to break.
Speaker 1 (01:34:14):
All right, thanks to all of you for some of
the positive feedback on the Commissioner's Courts. And it's kind
of you can't just schedule that like Wednesdays at eleven
because if you don't get a bunch of good questions
and you kind of can't have the segment. So I
don't know. We'll have to like put up feelers, right
and how intermittently we can do the Fantasy Football Commissioner's Court.
Send all questions to at sports RV or Ross at sports.
Speaker 2 (01:34:38):
Seven ninety dot com if you want to send an email.
All right, So appreciate you all for participating in that.
Speaker 1 (01:34:44):
That was fun.
Speaker 2 (01:34:45):
We'll have to we'll have to go to the big Boss,
Matt Thomas, see if we can do that Commissioners Court.
At some point, I thought that was pretty fun, good
stuff there. But one thing that we had to put
off because we had a couple y'all calling in for
that was the news at noon.
Speaker 1 (01:34:57):
So now we have to get you the news at noon.
Speaker 2 (01:35:00):
Fish here on a Sports talk is seven ninety in
the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 8 (01:35:07):
Hey, Jonathan, what's going on? Ross, how are you feeling?
How's everything? It's kind of it's kind of chilly. I've
been waiting for it to get cool down a little bit.
I'm tired of the how's your lady? You'll going out
for Halloween?
Speaker 1 (01:35:17):
No, I don't think we know.
Speaker 8 (01:35:18):
We might to go to Big City Wings though, because uh,
we went with a person on the other week and
she loved it, like, okay, actually love the vibe atmosphere,
So we might do that. Still, this guy's learning, you
know what I'm saying, different plugs in.
Speaker 1 (01:35:28):
You know, I got you learned from the best, but
it's a genuine plugging. You know, it's genuine. I like that.
I like that, all right, Jonathan, What do you got
on the news at noon? All right?
Speaker 8 (01:35:38):
If you guys are just getting in to your cars
and you know, haven't been listening or didn't catch up
on the sports. Last night, Rocket smashed the Raptors one
thirty nine to one twenty one over there in Toronto,
the versatile big lineup looking very promising and more and
more sharp as the days go on. A man having
seven turnovers, but we knew that was gonna happen with
(01:35:59):
Bam being out, so that's not really.
Speaker 1 (01:36:01):
A surprise for most of us.
Speaker 8 (01:36:03):
Katie still being Katie thirty one points, Jabari twenty five,
Shangoon eighteen from You know, it seems a little bit
he got a seventy five percent from field.
Speaker 1 (01:36:13):
Goal doing all right, He's doing amazing.
Speaker 8 (01:36:15):
Actually, Tarry Easton again is still showing out after those
first two games, and you know him looking like he
was kind of down on the dumps a little bit,
not getting that extension. Fifty four percent from the field
two three pointers, two and two and overall, I really
don't got much to say about this game. You can
(01:36:36):
chuck it up to this the Raptors, like how Ross
said earlier, if you were listening in, they do have
the worst defense right now, one of the worst defense
in the league. So it could be one of those
things that we just passed on, like all right, we
gotta wait till we go back to another team like
the Pistons or the Thunder. But overall, a very good win,
very promising win.
Speaker 2 (01:36:52):
It yes, I mean I just look relative to expectation
Vegas odds. You know, Matthew and I always argue about this.
He says, it means very little.
Speaker 1 (01:37:02):
I think it gives you a good idea of what
to expect for for the week or for the game,
depending on what support you're talking about.
Speaker 2 (01:37:07):
Six and a half point favorites. She won by nineteen.
Offense looked great. Did you know the highest rated offense now,
this is points per one hundred possessions correct for pace.
You know some teams play higher pace than others. The
number one offense in basketball is your Houston Rockets.
Speaker 1 (01:37:27):
Genre. See, we had nothing more about.
Speaker 8 (01:37:30):
And who was that dude on Twitter that Matt he's
reading the reporter that said Rockets are gonna be I
can't think of his name, that's what his last name?
Speaker 1 (01:37:39):
What did he say that the Rockets are gonna Rockets?
Speaker 8 (01:37:41):
Well will get like the fifth seed or something in
Spurs will be ahead?
Speaker 1 (01:37:44):
John Hollinger? John Hollingers? So right now is Mad beefing
with him on Twitter?
Speaker 12 (01:37:48):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:37:48):
He keeps bringing him up.
Speaker 8 (01:37:49):
Okay, he keeps downgrading the Rockets offense because we don't
have Van Vliet and.
Speaker 1 (01:37:55):
I just I don't know, man. We look good and.
Speaker 2 (01:37:57):
Oh my god, look at this video a whole on Sorry,
somebody's just sent an AI picture of me Matt and.
Speaker 1 (01:38:06):
You and Commissioner's Court. Are you serious?
Speaker 2 (01:38:13):
Matt does not look like Matt. I would say, I mean,
I would say of us. That doesn't look like you either, really,
but that's he must have used the picture that I
posted of you at Champberger.
Speaker 1 (01:38:24):
Yeah, it looks like kind of like you but not really.
Speaker 2 (01:38:29):
That's good, kind of like me, but not really. The
one for Matt is way off list as big as
something of what. All right, I'm gonna retweet this at
sports RV if y'all want to see this tweet that
Sam just sit with this AI video of or AI
picture of me, Matt and Jonathan.
Speaker 1 (01:38:47):
Check it out at sports RV. Oh my gosh, all right,
sorry to interrupt it. I was just all right, hey.
Speaker 8 (01:38:54):
Moving on to the World Series, Blue Jays dominates Blake Snell,
finishing the game six one to put the series three
to two and going back into Ron so hopefully closing
out the series. And I forgot to call his name,
hopefully getting that podcast spot off the air.
Speaker 1 (01:39:09):
Oh my god, terrible, Jose, I believe it was. And
I don't know how to say the forgive me the picture.
Speaker 8 (01:39:15):
Rookie y Savage, your savage works Savage ends up breaking
the rookie record for twelve.
Speaker 1 (01:39:20):
K's in the World Series. Wow, dude, Domine. He was awesome.
Speaker 8 (01:39:24):
He looked like he's been there a long time veteran.
If you guys haven't watched the game, it was beautiful.
Ol Tany I think he went oh in what's six?
I don't think he got a single hit there this
last game.
Speaker 1 (01:39:35):
Yeah, there was I think o Tany, Freeman and Bets
all went over in the game. And Bets has been
looking very shaky there.
Speaker 8 (01:39:42):
And it doesn't seem like the Dodgers are really ready
for what the Blue came in to think. They probably
thought they had a cruise to another ring.
Speaker 2 (01:39:49):
Yeah, and it seeming like it combined oh for eleven
with no walks.
Speaker 1 (01:39:52):
Oh for eleven no walks. That's embarrassing. He should be embarrassed, Dodgers,
with your high payroll and your built in advantages.
Speaker 2 (01:40:04):
Of course, it's baseball. If any sport were there, I'm
not gonna say the Blue Jays are getting lucky. The
Blue Jays are a very good team. But any sport
you can lose, anything can happen.
Speaker 1 (01:40:15):
I would say baseball is the biggest one of that,
especially when you get to the high level. The margins
are so thin. But anyways, go Blue Jays.
Speaker 8 (01:40:24):
And have you heard for over there, I know, bring
up the LSU controversy again. Oh, yes, you hear coach,
Oh that he would come back. Yes, did you hear
about that? I did hear about that.
Speaker 1 (01:40:34):
It's saying that he even.
Speaker 8 (01:40:36):
Would be quoted, that he even would be assistant if
laying Griffin Criffin, like Kiffin Kiffin, he would be the
defensive coach.
Speaker 1 (01:40:43):
He would be.
Speaker 8 (01:40:44):
Yeah, he says coach here on Yahoo if he was there.
But if you haven't heard, guys from over there in Louisiana,
the governor doesn't want Scott Woodworth to even pick a coach.
Speaker 1 (01:40:55):
I wanted to play that. Yeah, please play audio again.
Speaker 10 (01:40:59):
We are not going down a failed path. And I
wanted to tell you something. This is a pattern. The
guy that's here it out. I wrote that contract cost
Texas A and M seventy something million dollars. Right now, we
got a fifty three million dollar liability. We are not
doing that again. And you know what, I believe. I
(01:41:21):
believe that we're gonna find a great coach and maybe
we let President Trump pick it.
Speaker 9 (01:41:24):
He loves winners.
Speaker 10 (01:41:25):
You know I'm not gonna be picking the next coach,
but I can promise you we're gonna pick a coach,
and we're gonna make sure that that coach is successful,
and we're gonna make sure that he's compensated properly, and
we're gonna put metrics on it, because I'm tired of
rewarding failure in this country and then leaving their taxpayers
on the foot or you know, to foot the bill.
Speaker 1 (01:41:47):
So yeah, absolutely, m college sports and I yell has
done serious. When we have the governor's stepping in, I'm
and talking bad about the AD.
Speaker 8 (01:42:00):
I mean, this is insane making administrative decisions. And so
also I have we have a comment from coach Oh.
This is what he had to say about possibly being
in the fold at.
Speaker 1 (01:42:09):
LSU about Dan bad down down go there yet? Thank
you coach Oh. Appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (01:42:17):
No, okay, I thought it was manh Yeah. And then
coach Oh, what about just being not the head coach
but possibly being the defensive coordinator.
Speaker 1 (01:42:29):
About Dan down Gore? Yet? All right, thank you.
Speaker 2 (01:42:33):
Appreciate coach Oh and his comments here on the news
that knew anything.
Speaker 8 (01:42:37):
Else, Jonathan, That's all I got for you today.
Speaker 1 (01:42:39):
That's the thank you. I appreciate it. All right.
Speaker 2 (01:42:43):
We're gonna take quick break here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Rossby arial with you, Jonathan Allen as well. Matt Thomas
is not You guys can get in. Phone lines open, Davis,
you on hold. We will get to you next. I promise.
I'm gonna be flying solo till one o'clock. So you
guys want to get in, you could do so. You
can also get in until two o'clock. But Adam Wat's
are going to join coming up at one. You guys
(01:43:04):
want to get in seven one three two one two
five seven ninety the phone number seven one three two
one two five seven ninety. All right, you get a
(01:43:30):
look at that picture, Jonathan, that's actually this is actually.
Speaker 1 (01:43:35):
Do you agree with my assessment? Yeah? Kind of looks
like you but not really look like me, but not really.
Speaker 2 (01:43:43):
I'm glad they got my high hairline and my old age,
right at least on this picture, jackasses. I got a
chrispy hairline, so I can yeah, yeah, alright, shut up,
so did I and I was in my twenties.
Speaker 1 (01:43:52):
All right, who'll get there, Jonathan.
Speaker 2 (01:43:56):
We'll start to get the you'll get there eventually, and then,
of course Matt's completely bald, but that's okay. I mean hillock.
I mean, it's just it is what it is. I
don't I don't know if you noticed, Johnathan, I don't
make bald jokes. It's too low hanging fruit.
Speaker 1 (01:44:07):
I don't do that. Others others can do that.
Speaker 2 (01:44:09):
But it's like I got other I got dozens of
other things I can make fun of mat about it.
I don't have to go with something that he can't
control in his uh as far as oh man, look,
I just noticed the hands are all messed up. Yeah,
you could tell that's an AI picture. Look at my thumbs.
My thumbs are merged. You see this picture. I retweeted
it at sports RV on my Twitter at sports RV
(01:44:29):
because we were doing a fantasy football Commissioner's court earlier.
And you know what if you if you need a
ruling and you're a fantasy football league, you can do that.
We can get you into commissioner's court at seven one
three two one two five seven ninety. But I retweeted
on my Twitter at sports RV if you want to
want to look at it, seven one three two one
two five seven ninety is the phone number.
Speaker 1 (01:44:50):
Uh huh.
Speaker 2 (01:44:51):
Steven says he's got it, and I just don't get it.
But it's a multiple tweet thing, all right, go ahead
and send it Steven, maybe, well, can we can read that?
And then also God's green saying Landry is lying about
the taxpayers footing BK's buyout is weird. Yeah, Woodward also
did not get we you do have to correct the
(01:45:11):
governor of Louisiana. Woodward hired Fisher, but he did not
give him that extension, which was the where the big
buyout came in.
Speaker 1 (01:45:22):
So Slanner job. Yeah, he's a labylous accusations on the
louisiann't know, So I don't know. And also I think
he was he was wrong about some other contract that
that happened there. I can't remember if it was the
Brian Kelly dealer or whatever else. But clearly he had
his uh, he had his didn't have his fact straight.
And I'd never heard of this in my life.
Speaker 2 (01:45:44):
The governor stepping in and saying the athletic director is
not going to make the hire for for for a
state program. That's insane. The heck's going on over there?
What's in the water over there in Louisiana, folks? Let
us know? All right, As I mentioned, phone lines are open.
Dave in Spring has been holding paid, wanted to get
in and talk some rockets balls.
Speaker 1 (01:46:01):
So let's go and do that with you. Dave, go ahead.
The floor is yours.
Speaker 7 (01:46:07):
Hey Ross. Before I get to the rockets, let me
make a comment on that Louisiana governor. One of the
things instruing me. He talks about how well we're going
to negotiate that buyout, and I'm like, what's to negotiate.
I mean, the guy has a contract you're firing. It's
just like Jimbo and just like with James Harrison. I
mean you owe him the money. He's not gonna Yeah,
(01:46:27):
I'm not going to sit out and negotiate a lower number.
Speaker 2 (01:46:30):
Well, I think they are, Gordy says, now this, of course,
Chris gord is the expert of all things Louisiana Daves.
I think he said he can they can negotiate a
lump sum for him where he has offsetting language. So
if Brian Kelly gets hired and it's offset normally it's
off setting language where if he gets coaches somewhere else,
that the money comes off the books. But apparently it's
(01:46:52):
off setting to where even if Brian Kelly. Let's say
ESPN is gonna pay him two million dollars a year
that comes off the books for LSU as well. So
they're trying to negotiate I think a lump sum that
is a lower number and figuring it out with what's
going on with Brian Kelly's offsetting language. But there's there's
a lot of coach openings right now, and I don't
know that Brian Kelly is going to be at the
(01:47:13):
top as far as UF or anywhere else, but it's
certainly possible that he would take a lump some instead
of in lieu of the long term payments. I think
that's what the what they're talking about there.
Speaker 7 (01:47:27):
All right, Well it is crazy that the governor's involved
in it. But let me move on to the Rockets.
You know, I heard you talking earlier and we're kind
of how we feel about the team, you know, two
and two with the two losses. I don't feel bad
at all. I mean, I think they could be four
and oh very easily. And I think the big takeaway
so far is how much they miss Fred. You know,
I just think that you know, what Fred brought to
(01:47:48):
the team, getting them into their offense. They haven't figured
it out yet, and they I don't know. Let me
ask you this question. If you've got this team that's
got all the pieces except a point guard, and you
got Red and he's not really doing it so far,
and Aman's a great player, but he's not really a
natural point guard. What about Tarr Eastan being dealt because
(01:48:09):
Tari didn't sign his deal. I heard they offered him
a contract, he turned it down. He's betting on himself.
You know what if you packaged Tari and maybe even
read I don't know, you know, I give up on
him just yet, but go around and look for a
good point guard who might be available. And I don't
know who that would be, but maybe like de Jonte
(01:48:29):
Murray on the Hawks, or Kalin Suggs on the Magic
or a Drew Holliday, an older guy. But you know,
I don't know that could be able to sign Tari anyway,
So you might as well put it, you know, think
about putting him into a deal for a real point guard.
I mean, we don't have much time. Kevin Durant is
thirty seven years old. It's all like we can sit
around and wait till Fred recovers, hopefully, and so you know,
(01:48:52):
I just wanted to get your thoughts on that, whether
a deal should or could be made that involves Tari
to get a point guard on board and all this
hang out the.
Speaker 2 (01:49:00):
Yeah, thanks a lot, Dave appreciate it. Yeah, it's interesting
and there's a lot of stuff at play here. First
of all, the Rockets are basically up against a hard
cap number. They can't make any moves for a couple
of months. So for these couple of months they're going
to have to dance with who they brought. And unfortunately
who you brought is is Fred van Vliet and he's
out with that ACL injury.
Speaker 1 (01:49:21):
And as you mentioned, I'm in Thompson.
Speaker 2 (01:49:22):
Okay, two games ago against the Nets, he had eight assists,
no turnovers. This last game seven assists, four turnovers, and
he can just be prone to kind of losing the
handle on the dribble every now and then read Shepard assists.
I think it was eight to two ratio against the Nets,
and then it was a one to zero ratio in
eighteen minutes against the Toronto Raptors on the road. You're
(01:49:46):
seeing some flashes like okay, yeah, playmaking here, play making there,
but you got to bring those guys along and then
hope they improve as the season goes along and getting
more comfortable in those areas, because that's what it's going
to take. This is kind of who is going to
be as far as trading. Yeah, Tari Easton is going
to be a restricted free agent in this offseason. Has
he bet on himself, somebody else is going to have
(01:50:07):
to give him an offer sheet, and then the Rockets
are going to have the ability to match that whatever
the number is, or they can pass on it and say,
all right, you want to sign them this kind of deal,
you got them, So we'll see what happens with that.
And over the years, of course, I mean we can
think of the guys like Chandler Parsons and some others
who have been restricted free agents and the Rockets have
(01:50:29):
sometimes decided to match, sometimes decided not to match, depending
on the situation and depending on what kind of deal
they are, and depending on how el Tarry Easton plays
this season. First two games not very good, next two
games very good for Tari Eason. So it's gonna be
a little while, I believe before they can kind of
get everybody involved in trades, depending on how how they
(01:50:50):
want money to be lined up, because if you want
to package up guys that you've just signed, like a
Josh Okogie or Drian Phinnich Smith or whoever else, I
think they can't do that for a couple of months,
and so this is going to be who they got
right now for sure. I think words we used the
first couple of games were stagnant and you know, disjointed
(01:51:14):
that that type of stuff. Sloppy is a word we've
used as well for the Rockets offense. But as I
mentioned in the news at noon with Jonathan, the number
one offensive rated team. Now, after these last two games
where you drop one hundred and thirty nine and one
hundred and thirty seven against the Brooklyn Nets and the
Toronto Raptors, the number one offense in basketball, very small
sample size is your Houston Rockets. And of course you
(01:51:38):
just went two games against a horrible defense. But you
went up against Oklahoma City Thunder. Now, it took a
couple of overtimes, which is scored one hundred and twenty
in that game. That's nothing to sneeze at one hundred
and eleven against the against the Pistons where you missed, they
got one hundred eleven.
Speaker 1 (01:51:51):
They shot thirty nine percent from the floor.
Speaker 2 (01:51:53):
They could have got some of those bunnies and some
of those easy baskets, then they could have scored one
hundred twenty easy in that game. So overall, it's not
the prettiest, but they're figuring it out. They're running some
two man games stuff with with alprynching Gun and Kevin Durant.
They're building chemistry that to me has been very good
(01:52:15):
where you've had a lot of situations where they're trapping
that opposing defense or trapping that and then you've got
alprynching Goon who can a roll to the basket and
finish with either hand and make a couple of moves
and score easily in the paint or b He's a
very good passer, has a very good feel for the game,
and can make plays four on three. So right now,
(01:52:37):
the offense has looked good, even though overall for the
balance of the season, even though first couple of games
it looked a little clunky is another word that people
have used. So they're gonna get a little more comfortable.
It's not gonna be like free flowing twenty fourteen Spurs.
Everybody's moving the ball around because everybody's a great passer
type of stuff. There's gonna be some io with Kevin Durant,
(01:52:58):
some io with Alpryn sching goon and guys crash down
on double. It's gonna be a men Thompson working his
way and you know, around to the basket where guys
aren't necessarily respecting his three point shot, which he still
has not made one all season Long's there's gonna be
some opportunities for growth. And there is but one hundred
(01:53:18):
and thirty nine in the last game, one hundred thirty
seven in the game before that, and the number one
offense in basketball in terms of offensive rating not horrible.
So it'll be interesting to see how things unfold, because
this happens in every game, every season of every NBA team.
Rotations and offenses and defenses and everything evolve quickly. What
(01:53:39):
happens in the first handful of games is not gonna
be what you're gonna see in game seventy to eighty two.
Guys are gonna get better, Guys are gonna get hurt
or moved or signed or whatever. The complexion of this
team is going to change as the season goes along.
But right now I'm feeling pretty good. Yeah, men, Thomson
(01:53:59):
can be a little bit better. Ball handling is starting
us starting actions. But you get You can use Shing
Goun for that. You can use Kevin Durant for that.
Jabaris Smith Junior is a guy who can stretch the
floor knock down threes as he did last night. He
made four of nine. Kevin Durant somehow keeps getting left
wide open a couple of times. Last night he was
four of eight from three. Your three point shooting is better. Also,
(01:54:20):
of note, your free throw shooting is much better for
the Rockets this year. Good story from Danielle Lerner on
some of the stuff behind that. Coach Udoka mentioned that
there was did he say it was Jabaris Mith Junior.
I think he got everybody like signing contract and getting
a pack like they've been practicing better. It was assistant
coaches that one of the assistant coaches, okay, deal with
(01:54:42):
them making deals like they're all working on their free
throws and so far, okay, just four again, we have
to say four games sample size, things are looking good.
And it is a fact to say you got the
number one offense in basketball in Houston at this moment
in the NBA. All right, quick break Here on the
Matt Thomas Show with Ross without Matt Thomas. Adam Wexler
(01:55:05):
joining at one o'clock. You guys want to get in,
you can seven one three two one two, five and
seven ninety the phone number seven one three two one
two five seven ninety with you until two o'clock. It
is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 1 (01:55:23):
Welcome back.
Speaker 2 (01:55:25):
To The Matt Thomas Show with Ross Without Matt Thomas.
Ross fine flying the solo for a couple more minutes.
You can get in and talk to me if you'd like.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety the
phone number seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
Adam Wexler will be joining in just a couple of
minutes for the final hour of the program. Matt Thomas
(01:55:48):
is out, traveling back from Toronto, I think, and he's
got I think his daughter's in a playoff volleyball game.
So say it with me, Go Mustangs, Kingwood Mustangs. I
guess in some sort of volleyball high school playoff action.
So Matt is out. He'll be back tomorrow in studio.
In the meantime, as I said, you guys can hang
out with me at seven one three, two one two
(01:56:11):
five seven ninety So yes. Danielle Lerner with the UH
with the article for the Houston Chronicle. Is Rockets assistant
coach Cam Hodges examining areas where the team needed to
improve and zoned in on free throws. Durant pledging to
make twenty free throws in each of his workouts, a
deal he agreed to in solidarity with his teammates. Apparently
(01:56:33):
every Rockets player signed a free throw contract. Each player
has his terms a little bit different, just tailored to
their individual practice routine and what they're going for.
Speaker 1 (01:56:44):
So far in the season looking good. Rockets eighty one
point three percent from the free throw line. Last year
seventy three point eight percent, which was the worst in basketball.
I think the biggest the biggest leap has been Steven Addams.
I want to go pull this up like he he.
I think I should have at my jinkskin. Okay, he's
(01:57:06):
missed one at least. No, I don't have to jinx
it that way. Ninety one point seven percent. Now again,
we talk about sample sizes a lot on this show
or anything with sports, especially when it comes to kind
of baseball, basketball, football, anyway, any sport, anything in life.
Folks don't take too much out of small sample sizes,
(01:57:27):
or maybe sometimes you need to. You don't have a choice,
but you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (01:57:30):
Uh, A career fifty three and a half percent free
throw shooter is Steven Adams.
Speaker 1 (01:57:39):
That's I think. Are you much of a free throw shooter, Joathan?
Would you think I'm probably a fifty to fifty guy.
I'll give myself seventy five, oh seventy five.
Speaker 2 (01:57:47):
I'd call bs on that we're hitting the court right
after the show.
Speaker 8 (01:57:52):
I'm show, okay, alright, no PG.
Speaker 1 (01:57:56):
I don't. I don't, I can't. I'm not about the court.
And okay, all right, I'm there in the corn. I'm
more of a back to the basket guy I got.
I'll get you. I'll hit you with some lefty hooks
all all day.
Speaker 2 (01:58:05):
And because I'm about six foot two, and if I'm
the tallest guy on the floor, I'm gonna be good.
If anybody's taller than me, I'm done. I have no chance.
Like I can only win with height. I got no athleticism,
skills are very limited, but I can I can read,
I get those mee bounds. I'm the I'm the Angel
Reese of the black Top, all right, John, I get
(01:58:27):
those mee bounds, baby, And.
Speaker 1 (01:58:29):
I'm like, oh, after the third one, I'm pretty tired.
Speaker 2 (01:58:32):
So yeah, my back to the basket game. Uh, it's
probably like a five out of ten. Everything else is
like two to three out of ten. But I have
to go out there and shoot. I think I can
get fifty to fifty on on some free throws. So
fifty three point five percent from Steven Adams and so
far he's shooting ninety one point seven percent, So free
(01:58:53):
throws have been much improved for the Rockets. Of course
there is There was a big one missed by Kevin
Durant at the end of that Oklahoma City Thunder game,
and I hope it continues again, small sample size, but again, hey,
better than shooting fifty percent four games in. I'd rather
it be this way so we can continue to gather
data and they can continue to shoot free throws and
(01:59:14):
hopefully things get a little bit.
Speaker 1 (01:59:16):
Better for them.
Speaker 2 (01:59:17):
At the foul line, tip of the cap to Rocket's
assistant coach Cam Hodges, as this was what he wanted
to do to hold guys accountable for making their free
throws famously last year Albryn Shaoon first half in Change
of the season, I think what to say was maybe
even after January first is when he really kind of
fell off a cliff. He was at seventy five percent,
which would be great, especially considering how much he gets
(01:59:38):
to the line and they're called free throws. And then
he finished the season at sixty nine point two percent,
So that's that's certainly something else we're going to keep
an eye on. I would say naturally the number are
going to go up because you get Kevin Durant.
Speaker 1 (01:59:51):
I mean that dude.
Speaker 2 (01:59:51):
The dude's a walking fifty to forty ninety player, so
hopefully he can get over ninety percent. Steven Adams is
going to be the one. I'm going I'll really be watching.
Twinty one point seven percent. His career high and any
season is sixty one percent from the free throw line.
So hopefully the Rockets can improve in that facet of
the game. And hello, you make your free throws, that's
(02:00:13):
gonna score your points.
Speaker 1 (02:00:14):
It's gonna win you more games. So margins are thin
in NBA games unless you're playing the Brooklyn that's or
the Toronto Raptors. But for the most part, I mean
a lot of little things. And that's kind of the
beauty and the curse of these high level sports. You know, NFL,
if you watch and like, if this ball bounces that way,
or if this guy doesn't get open, or if this
guy doesn't make that fingertip catch or toe tap at
the at the at the boundary, anything can go any
(02:00:38):
different way.
Speaker 2 (02:00:39):
Basketball games like that too. This three doesn't go in,
that three doesn't get you know, you miss two threes
that you would have and then one turnover. That's three
possessions that could be up to eight nine points in
a game, and all of a sudden, yeah, weren't close.
Speaker 1 (02:00:50):
We lost by eight. Like what That's how thin the
margins are in basketball. And that's one of the things,
like Daryl Mory when he was general manager of the Rockets,
it's like, you gotta find the little advantages. You gotta
find that half a percent here, half percent there that'll
creep you closer and closer to winning more basketball games
and give yourself a more more of a chance every game,
(02:01:11):
make you more free throws, gonna give you more of
a chance every single game, and that's good for the
Houston Rockets. Hopefully they can keep it up. They can
they shoot above eighty percent as a team after being
seventy three point eight percent last year, that would be fantastic.
Speaker 2 (02:01:27):
All right, quick break here on The Matt Thomas Show
with Ross without Matt Thomas Adam Weser joining for the
final hour. You guys want to get in, despite what
some of you were saying on Twitter, you can get in.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety. Is
the phone number seven one three two one two five
seven ninety. Hour number four of the Matt Thomas Show
continues with Adam Wexler.
Speaker 1 (02:01:47):
After this short break is the Matt Thomas Show with.
Speaker 3 (02:01:51):
Ross one a PM.
Speaker 1 (02:02:03):
Here on Sports Talk seven ninety ros Viria with you.
Adam Wexer will be here. I guess in the next segment.
Maybe it is my bad.
Speaker 2 (02:02:12):
I should have reminded him he agree to do this,
But that's all right. He'll be here. We can hold
it down. You guys can get in as well if
you'd like. It's seven to one three two one two
five seven ninety is the phone number seven to one
three two one two five seven ninety talking some about
the Rockets, as they have the.
Speaker 1 (02:02:29):
Number one at least by offensive rating. It's one metric
so early in the season.
Speaker 2 (02:02:33):
You've gone against some horrible defenses in the Toronto Raptors
and the Brooklyn Nets. But I still say nice to
be number one in offense. As far as offensive rating,
I think they're fourth in net rating, which is your
offensive rating minus your defensive rating. So pretty good stuff
so far in the early going by the Rockets. They
are nineteenth in defense, but overall pretty good. First couple
(02:02:56):
of games or coin flips. Fortunately you lost both of
those coin flips and then you took care of business
against the bad teams. You're sitting at two and two.
Rockets next in action Saturday, seven o'clock. Start here on
Sports Talk seven ninety. It'll be a six o'clock Rockets
launch pad with Dan Matthews on your home for your
Houston Rockets Sports Talk seven ninety fun lines open at
(02:03:17):
seven one three, two, one two five, seven ninety. You
can also send tweets to at sports RV if you'd
like to get in there. As we've been talking a
number of different things. You got the World Series in
action right now, say it with me.
Speaker 1 (02:03:31):
Go Blue Jays, Jonathan, Are you gonna hit that gut feeling?
I think you. I think you're gonna be right, And
I'm just kidding you to give your problem. If I
hit that from if I hit that yeah the other
day with the Pacers on Tuesday, and I thought you
were crazy. I did, because two.
Speaker 2 (02:03:46):
Of the games were going to be in LA, and
then one of the games, if the if we're even
gonna be a game six. At that point, Dodgers were
up two to oh, two to one. Excuse me, at
that point, I just I didn't believe and I was
wrong so far.
Speaker 1 (02:03:58):
You got the things. They went back to back games
in LA.
Speaker 8 (02:04:01):
But I think anything is the first game they won,
Dodgers was down too. All right, baseball savant, go ahead,
hit me out process this right. I was all right,
all right, okay, that's fine. You're they're gonna win that game.
He's a he's a dog at the noun of mine.
Speaker 1 (02:04:16):
Right. Then you go to the next game. Oh TONI
had to save him.
Speaker 8 (02:04:21):
Blue Days were controlled the entire game, the entire game
until he tied it up and helped him tie it up,
and for the eighteen innings and that at that point
it was anybody's game. I was like, you know what, ude,
Blue Days got this. There's no way like they look sloppy,
Dodge looks sloppy.
Speaker 1 (02:04:34):
Okay, all right, well, mister baseball Savanna is on it.
They won two in a row.
Speaker 2 (02:04:38):
If they win three in a row, that'll be a
gut feeling hit for Jonathan And he made on Tuesday
that I said, what's crazy at the time, and I
will be I think I said, But I also remember
I said that. I said, I think the Dodgers are
gonna win. But also I'm saying that because I said.
Speaker 1 (02:04:50):
The Mariners were gonna win, right, they lost, even though
it's my true gut feeling, My true gut feeling when
they're up to one is that they were gonna they
They were up to one with two more games in LA,
I thought they were gonna win. But go Blue Jays.
We've talked some World Series. If you'd like, it's a
good one Yama Moto versus Gusman. That'll be Friday Dodgers
right now holding as a minus one forty favorite in
that game. And of course we have your Houston Texans
(02:05:11):
taking on the Denver Broncos. Could be the biggest feather
in the cap of the year. And the funny thing
is to me, and we've been kind of talking about
this really since last year when CJ.
Speaker 2 (02:05:26):
Stroud was kind of shaky. It's like, who's the real
CJ Stroud? Well, the real CJ. Stroud, we're hoping is
the guy who showed up last week at home against
San Francisco forty nine Ers. That's the best game he
has played all year, three hundred and eighteen yards, a
couple of touchdowns. He did have the one interception. Now
it was, Hm, how do I put this? You don't
(02:05:48):
want to say it was like training wheels defense that
the forty nine ers had out there. But it's not
gonna be Hey, come on man, it's not gonna be
as ferocious. Let's put it this way. Is what they're
gonna face coming up against the Denver Broncos this weekend.
Broncos have the second best offensive line in football according
to Pro Football Focus. And then you've got some really
(02:06:09):
good players on the edge, Jonathan Cooper and Nick Benito
for the Denver Broncos. So this will definitely have some
good guys up in the middle as well. So this
is gonna be interesting coming up this weekend and figure
out more and more who is the real CJ. Stroud.
And of course we kind of say this for every quarterback.
If he's able to get production, if he's able to
(02:06:32):
get time to throw, then he's gonna be okay.
Speaker 1 (02:06:34):
Well, it's the NFL man week to week. You're not
always gonna have a ton of time to throw. You're
not always gonna be blessed with the best offensive line
in football. You're gonna have to make something out of
nothing sometimes and throw on the run and throw under pressure.
And that's what's one of the things that CJ. Stroud
was so good at his rookie year was throwing under duress,
(02:06:55):
and we just had not seen it consistently this year.
I don't know if he had been banged up or
Whatever's that's kind of the excuse that I went to.
I was like, this guy doesn't even look like anybody
we know.
Speaker 2 (02:07:04):
I have to assume because there's been such a drop
off in performance that he has been injured or something
like that. But maybe he's just getting old because he
still doesn't move that well. But the Texans we mentioned
in Pro Football Focuses offensive line rankings moved up to
twenty six this week. Dominating the forty nine ers is
what they say in the article forty two passing attempts,
(02:07:27):
only three pressures and no sacks.
Speaker 1 (02:07:30):
That is beautiful.
Speaker 2 (02:07:33):
That is exactly what you want to see, that type
of pass blocking efficiency. Now you are at home and
they get another game at home to kind of to
work on their chemistry and communication and all that stuff.
That's good to not have to go on the road
to Mile High Stadium to face this ferocious front seven
from the Denver Broncos. But it's a matter of can
(02:07:53):
they hold up and then what CJ. Stroud is he
what is he going to be able to do? As
far as making those throws under duress. We know that
he can throw in a pocket. We know that he
can throw in time. I mean, just about anybody in
the NFL can do that. For the most part, we
know he has that capability. It's about what happens when
he is under duress. Texans holding as one and a
half point favorites against the Denver Broncos.
Speaker 1 (02:08:17):
Here's what CJ. Stroud had to say about that Denver
Broncos defense.
Speaker 15 (02:08:21):
Yeah, they you know, they have a really good rush
starts on their age. You know Benito and you know Coop.
They do a good job, you know, playing relentless and
you know, just they don't give up. You know, they
play really tough, and they interior really good interior guys
as well, So they're really good.
Speaker 3 (02:08:35):
Line.
Speaker 1 (02:08:36):
Oh, why is you stealing my words? CJ. That's basically
what I said. Every ante Ersrie again one data point
Pro Football Focus is not an end all be all,
but he had his best pass blocking game of the year.
They go through a one through one hundred grade against
the La Rams in Week one on the road, facing
off against Jared Vers Like playing some left and right
(02:08:57):
tackle and getting all mixed around.
Speaker 2 (02:08:59):
He had a twenty nine grade in that game. He
allowed five pressures according to Pro Football Focus, two of
them allowed against San Francisco and that was an eighty
two point one grade out of one hundred. So two
of the last three games he's had his best performances
as a left tackle and of course with everything we
(02:09:20):
contextual wise, on the road against Baltimore they had been
beaten up, but still good that he held up to
an extent. And then at home against San Francisco, who
had been beaten up as well. Probably would have been
a different a bit of a different story if he
had to go up against Nick Bosa, but he did.
Speaker 1 (02:09:34):
This is the NFL.
Speaker 2 (02:09:36):
Everybody's got injuries, everybody's got a key players hurt. I mean,
Joe Mixon hasn't played a snap for the Texans this season.
Christian Kirk has been in and out of the lineup.
Nico Collins is out with a concussion. Like injuries happened
in the NFL, and you play who's out on the field.
Speaker 1 (02:09:53):
That's just kind of the nature of the game. And
that's not gonna change, especially if and when they go
to an eighteen game season. Dudes are gonna wear down.
Speaker 2 (02:10:00):
You're not gonna be playing basically even even week one,
you're not playing full strength teams. Guys are getting hurt
in practice and training camp and all that other stuff.
So which CJ. Stroud shows up this weekend against the
Broncos a big opportunity to to make a statement, not
like you know, all of a sudden, the Chiefs are
gonna be quaking in their boots if they be oh no,
(02:10:22):
and Andy Reid's gonna be sleepless nights against the.
Speaker 1 (02:10:24):
The Houston Texas or anything like that. But I would
say a statement to your fan base is really a
statement to yourself and your city to to win this game.
Get four out of five against a really good Broncos
team that is six and two, that is mega talented
on the offensive line, mega talented on the defensive line,
and and have CJ. Shroud show up to where there's
no caveats right every win they have so this season
(02:10:48):
so far, Eh, it's the Titans, whatever, Eh, the Ravens
are beat up, whatever, Eh, the Niners had a bunch
of injuries. What you can't what if they beat this
Broncos team this weekend, So we'll see what happens. One
and a half point favorites according to the Vegas odds
(02:11:10):
right now.
Speaker 8 (02:11:12):
And you know, for Stroud, like listening to him in
the start and like preseason everything compared to now, it
really seems to me like it's just as an athlete,
like the locker room wasn't where it's supposed to be
for the entire Texas team. You know, what do you say, stagnant?
Was that the word that was making you upset? Complacent?
But this is but this is what was changing around
no complacency when you win. But I'm just saying, but
(02:11:34):
I think just the locker room and just the vibe
the entire team has shifted, not just because they have
won a couple of games, but just in general. Yeah,
the coaching might e invader or you know, getting rid
of CJ. Gardner at the start was a good catalysty
By might have been a cancer to the team.
Speaker 1 (02:11:49):
You know all this other things that could have happened
behind the scenes.
Speaker 2 (02:11:51):
Right, Yeah, the vibes always improve when you win. Winning
cures everything. That's what we've always talked about. You've had
locker rooms where guys hate each other and nobody cares
if every it loves each other and you're losing, And
that's another thing people go to too. And I was saying,
saying you Jonathan, but I'm saying, like one of the
big ones that arguments that people get into is like
body language. Oh, you know they're they're losing because their
body language is bad. On the sideline, like what do
(02:12:12):
you want him to do?
Speaker 1 (02:12:12):
You wanted me to do the chat cha slide and
high five and everybody we're down twenty one, Like I
forgot that. I mean, come on, you gotta be upset exactly, Jonathan,
you lose a race and.
Speaker 2 (02:12:20):
You found you know, yeah, no, oh, you're losing because
your body Like, no, my body language is bad because
I didn't because I'm mad at myself, because you're frustrated.
Because yeah, body language improves. It happens throughout every basketball season.
We hear it every baseball season especially. We hear it like,
you know, the guy the guys are loafing around and
we heard it from Uh, there's somebody who's calling me
on the post game Like Tarry Easton's body language it
(02:12:43):
was so bad, Like, okay, when he's making half court
shots and scoring twenty a game, body language is good. Yeah,
when he's going he was going like you know, two
for ten or whatever he was and only scoring three
or four points.
Speaker 1 (02:12:55):
Body language is bad. That's how it goes.
Speaker 2 (02:12:57):
That's how it's supposed to go because the other the
their side, not necessarily some some people like I'll look
at them, they're they're laughing, they're laughing on the bench
and they're losing.
Speaker 1 (02:13:06):
I can't believe this. These guys don't care. They don't care.
It's a lose lose, you know, you know who gets
a lot. Jaye Daniels. He can said a lot on
the Commanders.
Speaker 8 (02:13:15):
He could say every time he's losing or whatnot, he's
just smiling, relaxing, and.
Speaker 1 (02:13:18):
Okay, he's just a chill dres.
Speaker 8 (02:13:20):
It's better better you be calm focused with the game
that you you know what I mean, and getting in
fist fights with the QB coach, Like, come on, man,
it's not gonna like this is.
Speaker 2 (02:13:30):
These guys are professionals. They pour their lives into this.
For the most part, you do have this stray occasional
guy who who doesn't maybe doesn't care about whatever sport
they're professional in, but they have to care a lot
to at least some certain level too. Even not just
to make it to the NFL, to make it to college,
to make it to to off the practice squad, to
make it into the draft.
Speaker 1 (02:13:50):
Any of those things.
Speaker 2 (02:13:51):
Yeah, even ju yet juco guys like they care enough.
Trust all right, We're gonna take a break here on
The Man Thomas Show with Ross without Matt Thomas, Will
Adam Wexer be here in the next segment. Your guess
is as good as mine. We'll find out. Jonathan Allen
is here until two o'clock as well. You guys can
get into seven one three two one two five seven
(02:14:11):
ninety seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (02:14:23):
Barrowing along an hour number four.
Speaker 2 (02:14:27):
Of the Matt Thomas Show with Ross without Matt Thomas,
and we picked up a hitchhiker. Thank goodness you're here,
mister Wexler of the A team, gracious enough to hang
out a little bit early. I appreciate you, Adam, great
to be here, yes, and I'm glad to have you
here until two o'clock, at which point you will be
(02:14:48):
on for.
Speaker 1 (02:14:49):
Four more hours. Yes, not of early for any Rockets game.
Speaker 16 (02:14:52):
Who are the four thirty Rockets coverage begins probably the rest.
Speaker 7 (02:14:57):
Of the year.
Speaker 2 (02:14:57):
Yeah, that was nice, honestly. I'm who did the post game,
and they had to. They moved the game, of course
early because of the Toronto Blue Jays being involved in
the World Series and taking a three to two lead there,
which we can get to that in a little bit.
But your Houston Rockets in terms of points per possession.
Speaker 1 (02:15:14):
Number one in all of the NBA.
Speaker 16 (02:15:17):
Yeah, I would think that looking at their first two games,
because I know you did a lot of that last
segment kind of tempering every I know they're this, but
they've played that, and the defense here, and the two
teams they there's a lot of It's such a small
sample size, but I don't think they've played offense poorly
against either of the Pistons or Thunder. Obviously, if you're
(02:15:37):
looking at totals, they got an extra ten minutes of
basketball for both their offense and their defense. So sometimes
looking at total points per game, which some people still do,
they can get thrown off by things like that. But
they didn't shoot the ball well against Oklahoma City. They've
now put three consecutive games together three point line from
behind the three point line where they have shot the
(02:15:58):
ball significantly better, no shortage of open looks. You know,
we can analyze the numbers plenty, but we can also
watch and say these are shots I hope they get
all year, and the people taking them outside of the
O for seven from behind the line for a men
in the only game he will ever do that in
his entire Rockets career, I feel safe to say they're
getting the shots they want. I mean, Jabari Smith Junior
(02:16:19):
could have had thirty something easy last night. Kevin Durant
is clearly getting any shot he wants.
Speaker 1 (02:16:25):
Hello.
Speaker 16 (02:16:26):
Every year he's been in the NBA, no matter who
he plays with or who he's playing against. It's something
that this team hasn't seen in a while. Even with
elite players, he's still elite among the elite. If he
has the ball most time, the defender is saying, I
hope he misses because I can only do so much
to force him into a shot that I want him
(02:16:46):
to take. And at six eleven, with very long arms,
you're really not going to do a whole lot to
make him miss. And that's what's shown so far this year.
His usage rate is it's not low, it's low for him.
It's the lowest of his career. And yet his shot selection,
his points per possession is three point. All the things
are everywhere you would want them to be, and yes,
(02:17:07):
it's nice when they also take advantage of the opponent.
Would have been nicer if the last five minutes last
night were clear the bench. They couldn't bury the Raptors.
They were up basically nine or more the whole second half,
but it was sitting right there the whole time. If
they make a three, then it's down to six. They
just never did, so you still had all your starters
pretty much out there for the entire game, which is
(02:17:29):
something you'd love to avoid as often as possible, specially
after the opener when you played forty plus for so
many but all intents and purposes, you know, four games
end of the season, a week and change, there's way
way more to like than dislike. In spite of the
obvious problem. We know they're going to have to figure
out as the season goes along, and maybe when the
door opens for them to make a move is figuring
(02:17:50):
out what will actually work best in a playoff scenario
in the back court.
Speaker 2 (02:17:54):
Yeah, I was actually kind of surprised when I looked
it up and or maybe it's came across my Twitter
or something like that, that they had the number one
offensive rating in all of basketball, because to me, especially
the first couple of games, games we were using those
words clunky, disjoin, it, a little sloppy and stuff like that,
because especially Game one, was it like twenty five turnovers
or something like that. Those numbers have gone down since
(02:18:16):
and I expect them too. And you also haven't faced
a defense that is the quality of the Oklahoma City
Thunder since then. But even if it's not feeling like
this free flowing, complete ball movement kind of it doesn't matter.
Almost like I remember the James Harden days. Everybody's like, well, yeah,
it's you know, it's not great offense. It's just James
Harden dribbles and then he either drives and kicks or
(02:18:38):
he hits a step back three. He's like, Hey, if
the ball's going in the hoop, it doesn't matter how
aesthetically pleasing it looks. If it is just Kevin Durant
in Iso, we're playing a two man game without Prynchhing Goon,
and you do kind of have guys they're standing in
their spots because the defense is forced to collapse and
they're want to be open from three because that happened
with Jabari Smith junr As you mentioned Kevin Kevin. How
many times was Kevin Durant wide open it three last night?
(02:19:00):
And how how much does that happen to him in
his career Because guys are having to double off alprin
Shangoon and that's allowing Kevin Durant and others to be
to be open for three. So maybe it's not the
prettiest thing right now, but obviously it's it's been pretty effective.
Speaker 16 (02:19:15):
And their possessions are almost always successful because as long
as they shoot the ball that possession, they're gonna score
because even if they miss, they're gonna get a second
shot or a third shot, thank you, Steven Adams. As
long as they don't turn it over, which last night
was a bigger problem than the two games in between.
Obviously you mentioned the Oklahoma City game, they're going to
likely have a successful possession.
Speaker 1 (02:19:36):
The NBA.
Speaker 16 (02:19:37):
Also, we need the NBA to tell us what they're
gonna be in twenty five twenty six, because if this
is what the NBA is going to be this year,
then we're gonna have to rethink what some of these
numbers mean. Because scoring is outrageous, right, It's not even
a little up, it's so far up. I can hardly
believe what we're seeing every night, whether it's the individual
players popping for forty plus, like it's nothing. People you've
(02:19:59):
probably heard of but didn't expect them to have fifty
point games. They're doing that too. The Rockets are getting
to the free throw line a lot. They did that
last year, but they're getting to the free throw line
so much and making them it makes it so much
easier just to the simple numbers of it all, You're
gonna score more points because you have more opportunities to
(02:20:19):
score with The officials are calling way way more fouls
this year than they have in the last several years.
But it's just a one ten day sample size.
Speaker 2 (02:20:28):
You know, it feels like there is as much talent
in the league as probably ever because like the last
two nights are like Man Brooklyn nets They're zero and four.
They suck, They're terrible. It's like Michael Porter Junior is
pretty good, like he can go off for thirty, Terrence
Man cam Thomas, and then even last night, like the.
Speaker 1 (02:20:45):
Raptors, Brandon Ingram's good player. Scottie Barnes was a Rookie
of the Year, like Emanual Quickly. The Grady Dick is
like a lottery pick, is not a good play. He's
not a good player, but he's is a really really poor,
really poor man's Kevin Durant. They have like every team's
got like two to three pretty solid players, even the
(02:21:08):
worst teams in the league.
Speaker 16 (02:21:09):
It feels like, so the Rockets are shooting forty nine
point four percent as a team this year, So where's
that rankin What was the league look like this year
forty nine point four percent. It's i'll say fifteenth, it's eighth. Okay,
last year it would have been second.
Speaker 1 (02:21:25):
Okay.
Speaker 16 (02:21:25):
Shooting is up a great deal in the NBA. I
think players and coaches will say we're more creative and
more sophisticated on defense than we've ever been before, And
then other players will say what you just said, because
it's definitely true. The offenses are just better. The players
are just better. Who on the floor can't make a shot?
(02:21:46):
You don't play players like that anymore. Even a men
Thompson is someone will still try to categorize great, he
can't make a shot. Well, guess why that doesn't matter,
because he doesn't take the shot he can't make. He's
the only one on the floor that has limitations truly offensively. Basically,
anybody else can go wherever they want on the floor.
The bigs are out there shooting, the bigs are finishing,
the smalls are for everybody's able to do it. And
I do think the way they're officiating the game is
(02:22:09):
certainly an assist to that. Mentioned this on our show
the other day. There was one player in the NBA
last year that averaged more than nine free throw attempts
per game. It was just it wasn't He wasn't even second,
really he was third, but Giannis was the only one,
and he was over ten. He was almost at eleven
this year. As of yesterday, there were thirteen players averaging
(02:22:29):
that it has to go down. It has to or
else we're going to see, like, I mean, pick a
game any night and we're seeing something beyond spectacle.
Speaker 1 (02:22:39):
Look at the weak this year so far.
Speaker 16 (02:22:42):
The only yay, yeah, like he hit the game winner
last night, because I don't. I mean, we got a
lot better things to talk about. But I'm watching it
live and then watching it again. I'm amazed and I
don't even doubt I don't even really disagree with it
that Rudy Gobert has won all these deventsive Player of
the Year and yet when teams want to beat the
(02:23:03):
team that he's on, guess who they want defending them.
Every single time Golden State did it, the Rockets have
done it. Every team that's played Minnesota in the playoffs
has done it. And last night I was appreciative of
the people on the call. Last night was a national
game and they're saying, what you want here is Legler.
He was saying, you want to get Rudy want that's
who you want to be screening. So DeAndre Ayton comes
(02:23:25):
out and Rudy Gobert shows and Reeves is like perfect.
Rudy's completely off balance, He almost trips over himself, provides
zero defensive assistance in any way, drives right to the basket,
drops in an eight foot floater, game over, game winner, Like.
Speaker 1 (02:23:41):
Was it four first rounders for Rudy Gobert.
Speaker 16 (02:23:43):
Well, I don't know what you want to say about
their team, and Minnesota and all these teams like shoot
Utah got all those first rounders for Donovan Mitchell and
Rudy Gobert and and.
Speaker 1 (02:23:59):
Yeah, it's great to have them. It is.
Speaker 2 (02:24:01):
They are no guarantee. They're like they're in the mystery box.
What's in the mystery box? I want the mystery box?
Speaker 16 (02:24:06):
All these things if you can wade through all the
numbers and analysis here, the NBA has been as fun
as ever to watch.
Speaker 1 (02:24:13):
It's fun. I find myself.
Speaker 2 (02:24:15):
I find myself watching I've been watching the Peacock games,
the NBC games, the Amazon Prime, Like, I'm watching more
NBA basketball so far this year than I have in
a long time, but small sample size even.
Speaker 1 (02:24:26):
For my watching of the NBA.
Speaker 16 (02:24:27):
I do think I imagine you'd agree they set it
up in a specific way with all their new partners.
Obviously you listen to all the games here as we do,
of course, but the ability to watch presumably good matchups
specifically set up for the Monday double header and the
Tuesday double header, and the inside the NBA crew is
around those games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and it is
(02:24:49):
probably going to help the league if it helps them
generate more money. We'll see when TV deals come around again.
It obviously did this time around, and I know the
league couldn't have been more eager than to put out
that information yesterday about, uh, the viewing numbers being higher
than they've been in decades.
Speaker 2 (02:25:05):
Yeah, it's it's been a great product to watch, and
as I said, like even the worst teams have like
like Dude Brandon Ingram and Scottie Barnes in that second quarter,
We're just they couldn't miss, and it was it wasn't
really even bad defense most of the time. It was
just like these dudes are insane. And the Rockets won
by eighteen all right, seven one three two one two
five seven ninety is your phone number you want to
(02:25:25):
get in talk some Rockets basketball or anything you want
to get to seven one three two one two five
seven ninety. Adam Wexler gracious enough to hang out until
two o'clock.
Speaker 1 (02:25:35):
The eight team is coming up after that. Right now,
you're listening to The Matt Thomas Show with Ross without
Matt Thomas with you until two. Thanks Jabari, Thanks for
knocking out all those shots last night too. We appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (02:25:53):
He had twenty five points at eight to sixteen, shooting
four of nine from three, part of a one point
thirty nine one twenty one Rockets win. We're talking about
it a little bit here on The Matt Thomas Show
with Ross without Matt Thomas. Adam Wexler is here hanging out.
You guys can get into the phone lines if you
want at seven one three two one two five seven
(02:26:15):
ninety seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
We might just have to make this a regular segment
on this show. Katie tweets because those are always fun
to read, and he was active on Twitter last night
and this morning.
Speaker 1 (02:26:32):
I like where, uh, let's.
Speaker 2 (02:26:33):
See hold on. I just had it now I've lost it.
Of course, where he told that guy, you're not on
the team, my boy. That was pretty funny when he's
talking about there was a guy tweeting that he did
not want Kevin Durant on his team. Kevin Durant says, no,
you're not on the team. There's another one.
Speaker 16 (02:26:49):
Where either Jimmy Butler on my Jimmy bo room there,
thank you, bleep bleep Kevin Durant making my life miserable.
We dodged a bleeping bullet, didn't we. She responded, you
aren't on the team, my boy.
Speaker 1 (02:27:02):
Lol, He's so great.
Speaker 2 (02:27:05):
I'd love Kevin Durant on Twitter ever since he got
caught with his burner and now he's like, all right,
you know what, bleep it, I'm gonna go on my rear.
I'm gonna go on main as the kids would say.
Speaker 16 (02:27:15):
Somebody grabbed a Reggie Miller comment from the broadcast work
where he said, why couldn't I have been playing in
today's game? Nothing but threes and very little defense, and
Kevin Durant responded, there go watch the ninety six Eastern
Conference Finals and get off X complaining.
Speaker 2 (02:27:33):
Well, somebody got some guy was saying I watched the
nineties NBA all the time. The defense in this era
is trash compared to back ten. Okay, I guess I
need to go watch the ninety six Eastern Conference finals.
Perhaps Kevin Durant has done that recently more KD tweets
it's a reason nobody watches the era regular this era
(02:27:53):
of regular season, because it's trash basketball.
Speaker 1 (02:27:56):
Kevin Durant, Okay, what would you like for me to
do about this? Alex? Yes.
Speaker 16 (02:27:59):
He went back and forth with Alex a couple of times.
One of those was what I read earlier.
Speaker 1 (02:28:05):
Oh man, this is great stuff. Also talked about how
we can't believe that he's as open as he has
been with Alpa and Shingoon. That's what I want to be.
Speaker 16 (02:28:13):
There was one play in particular last night. He and
Alpi are on the right side of the floor. He
throws it into Alpi and Alpi's not even yet really
posting up, but he's he's getting close as he backs
in just a little bit, and the defender at the
top of the key on KD starts sliding down and
essentially creates a double team on Alpi. Alpi very calmly
and very easily throws to a wide open Kevin Durant. Yes,
(02:28:35):
the same Kevin Durant that's gonna be in the Hall
of Fame. Is the same player has always been absolutely
wide open.
Speaker 1 (02:28:41):
Yeah, the shot, I.
Speaker 2 (02:28:43):
Don't remember if it was like Scotty Barnes or whoever
it was, but whoever that was probably is gonna get
in the in the team meeting, gonna get that shown
and say don't double off because the clock was running down,
the shot clock was.
Speaker 16 (02:28:55):
Running down up and even the simple math of it all,
I always the double teaming sometimes the post. Just from
a simple mathematical standpoint, So what i'lpie backs his man down,
he shoots a turnaround four footer and they get two points.
Speaker 1 (02:29:09):
Why why not go ahead? You can have that.
Speaker 16 (02:29:11):
I don't want to give you a wide open Kevin Durant. Three,
that's more points.
Speaker 1 (02:29:15):
Colin Murray Boyles, that's who it was. Yeah, well he's
a rookie. It's okay. Well he's got to learn. He
was also being asked that that's the other thing is
what he scored thirty at that point.
Speaker 16 (02:29:27):
Probably the Raptors are one of these smallest teams in
the league to begin with they're only big players. They
literally have nobody on their roster even listed above six
ten except for Yaka Perl, and he was.
Speaker 1 (02:29:37):
Out with back tightness, back tightness, yep, but defeatist position
that the Rockets smashed them on the boards in every
which way.
Speaker 16 (02:29:50):
Now, I know the Raptors made a bunch of shots,
so there weren't a ton of offensive rebounds, but they
hammered him on the offensive glass, they hammered him on
the defensive glass, and it just made it that much
easier to Again, you're to get to one hundred and
thirty nine points by having few empty possessions, and that's
what offensive rebounding does for you.
Speaker 1 (02:30:06):
Seventeen offensive rebounds, eight of them by Steven Adams.
Speaker 16 (02:30:10):
Who had more offensive rebounds last night? Steven Adams or
the Raptors. Uh, let's see, I know the answer.
Speaker 1 (02:30:16):
Okay, so, oh my god, only four total and and
Steven for the Raptors, he had eight, yeah, seventeen offensive
rebounds as one individual human who played only twenty minutes
than the entire Raptors roster for a full forty eight
minute game. It's beautiful. Steven Adams.
Speaker 16 (02:30:35):
Absolutely, he keeps getting these tippins and dunks. He had
a double double again.
Speaker 2 (02:30:39):
Yes, he did twelve and twelve. What's his field goal percentage?
About ninety eight so far this season?
Speaker 1 (02:30:43):
He's no Capella shot season finally missed a shot, did
Clint Cappella?
Speaker 2 (02:30:48):
This this is gonna be fun as like, it's not
going to be the traditional free flowing somebody's got a
point guard and somebody's you know, breaking down defenses outside
of a men.
Speaker 1 (02:30:57):
Thoms I mean, Thompson has got to be their best
dribbled I ever, correct, Kevin Durant, not really, I mean
it's a men and it's in a lot of guys
back up off of him because well, he's not much
of a pull up threat. He's not much of a
three point threat still though with his craft dial in speed,
he's able to get to the basket a fair amount
(02:31:17):
of the time. But it's just not going to be
like a drive and kick type of offense that we're
used to seeing. And right now still pretty effective and
we'll see if they can get pretty it continue to
be effective. That game against the Celtics was looking pretty
easy a couple games ago, and then now they've got
two blowouts in a Row that game coming up on
Saturday here on Sports Talk seven ninety seven o'clock tip.
Speaker 16 (02:31:37):
Yeah, they crushed the Calves, who've been playing pretty well.
They've played the whole season without Darius Garland, but have
played very well.
Speaker 1 (02:31:43):
They did not play very well in last night's game.
Speaker 16 (02:31:46):
That was very one sided and very surprising and that
the Celtics did that. I only got one home game
over the next five that comes against the Mavericks next week. Sure,
between now and then we'll have many more injury updates
on Anthony Davis, who left last night, came after six
minutes and did not return. Went into the game with
an achilles issue tendedopathy. No word on what exactly it was,
(02:32:10):
although he was grabbing at his achilles. He obviously didn't
pop his achilles, but some injury maybe related to it
is what he potentially suffered from. And they survived the
terrible Indiana Pacers. Pacers missed a free throw intentionally with
just seconds remaining down two, and they got a wide
open three on the offensive rebound popped it out to
(02:32:31):
Nie Smith who left it just a touch short, or
else they would have lost that game. Pacers without their
two most important players from last year's team, Miles Turner
who's a Buck, and Tyrese Haliburton who's injured.
Speaker 1 (02:32:44):
They're bad.
Speaker 16 (02:32:45):
They just don't have enough talent there and they are
still winless.
Speaker 1 (02:32:48):
Well, no, hopefully, I don't care. I don't care. You'll
play them when you play them, yeah, whatever, Hopefully they're
still bad whenever the Rockets play them. How about that?
All right?
Speaker 2 (02:32:59):
We gonna say quick break here on the Mat Thomas
Show with Ross, without Matt Thomas.
Speaker 1 (02:33:04):
He remains out.
Speaker 2 (02:33:05):
He'll be back tomorrow one more segment to go with
Adam Wexer, and then he'll be on the A team
with Adam Clinton. You guys want to get in, you
can seven to one to three, two one two five
seven ninety Back in a minute here on Sports Talk
seven niney. Welcome back to the Matt Thomas Show without
(02:33:29):
Matt Thomas, but with Ross and with Adam Weser. Matt'll
be back tomorrow here on Sports Talk seven ninety for
a Friday edition, always the best edition. You get to
wake up the strippers at noon. We get the clips
that Jonathan.
Speaker 1 (02:33:44):
You guts some good clips this week, Jonathan, I don't know,
some good ones, Okay, good, good clips coming up to
open the show tomorrow at ten o'clock here on Sports
Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (02:33:54):
We've been talking a fair amount of rockets. We've been talking,
well we haven't, well, not Adam Weston, but throughout the
show we talked a little bit of World Series.
Speaker 1 (02:34:03):
Are you invested? Have you been watching the World Series? Absolutely? Okay?
You How much of that eighteen inning game did you watch?
Speaker 16 (02:34:09):
I was asleep for some of the teens, but went
back and watched just it was still on when my
eyes came back alive, and so I just rewinded to
where it was because the game was still tied.
Speaker 2 (02:34:19):
You can get you up on a baseball game. I mean,
there's like twenty seconds between every pitch.
Speaker 16 (02:34:24):
Clearly, whatever inning it was that I re arose, I'm like, well,
I couldn't have.
Speaker 1 (02:34:28):
Remember, resurrected, rerected in the middle of the game. Is
that long? Hey he has risen? Yes?
Speaker 16 (02:34:33):
Uh, nothing had happened, nobody had scored, true, you know,
uh yeah, but totally invested. The games I think have
been extremely entertaining. There's plenty of drama, even though there
hasn't been a ton of late inning drama. That's the
game that there had has been. Yesterday was more of
the same. You had a dominant pitching performance, and slowly
but surely, the Blue Jays kept extending their lead.
Speaker 1 (02:34:55):
And how was that, Trey is Savage?
Speaker 2 (02:34:57):
Ye I just turned the game off and then within
like five seconds the Toronto Blue Jays were up to nothing.
And he's just he just puts a smile on my
face so much.
Speaker 1 (02:35:08):
Hey, has Game five started? Oh? Yeah, they're one pitch
in and it's one nothing. Yeah.
Speaker 16 (02:35:13):
People, wait, they're three pitches in. It's two nothings. Poor Californians,
they're just doing poor. Is a bad choice of words
talking about dogs.
Speaker 1 (02:35:21):
Especially if you're attending a World Series game at Dodger
Stadium and Los Angeles.
Speaker 16 (02:35:26):
It was I think vital. I think the series is
as clearly two two with any k was very even.
But I think the Blue Jays had to win. I
don't think they must win game I think they needed
to win because of the long ago thought of Mike Scott.
He's not unbeatable, but we haven't seen a postseason pitcher
dominate the way Yamamoto has recently, and he's their Game
(02:35:48):
six starter. You'd hate to go into that game down
three to two. I don't think the Blue Jays really care.
They've clearly shown resiliency. How are they going to come
back after losing this eighteen in any game? How are
they going to come back after they come back all
the time. Yeah, they got down against the Mariners too. Yes,
this is not none of these issues that we think.
Cripple teams have done a thing to the psyche of
(02:36:09):
the Blue Jays. And the biggest reason why is the
exact same reason why the Astros never faltered. When the
best players are up for the moment, everybody else follows,
and the Astros' best players were always up for the
big moment. The greatest news was they had about ten
of them, but they always showed. What are the Blue
Jays leaning on their best player? And he's having one
(02:36:29):
of the most dominant postseasons in Major League Baseball history,
So they're just following his lead. There's no reason to
get down or feel down because he's on your team.
Things will be fine. Well, I want them to get down.
I want them to lose. But yeah, you mentioned Yamamoto
on the mound. Come Game six versus Gossman a minus
one forty slight favorites are the Los Angeles Dodgers and
(02:36:51):
the road year. When I was saying he's having the
most the greatest postseason in major league history, I was
not referring to Showhey.
Speaker 1 (02:36:56):
Ooh, you're talking about yes Savage. I'm talking about Vladimirica,
Vladimir Carrero.
Speaker 16 (02:37:01):
Okay, he's been That's what Correa or Altuve or Springer
or again, the Astros out a ton of them, so
it was a lot easier. But the Blue Jays are
just following Vladimir's lead. He's been a better offensive player
than Altani. He's clearly been a better defense.
Speaker 1 (02:37:17):
Though.
Speaker 16 (02:37:18):
Why he didn't give up five runs four? He didn't
give up four runs. He gave up no runs.
Speaker 1 (02:37:24):
That's true. He hasn't give up in as many runs.
Speaker 2 (02:37:28):
But uh, he also didn't have a six inning shutout
performance earlier in the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (02:37:32):
Earlier in the play against lesser competition. Okay, well, playoff competition.
Speaker 16 (02:37:36):
I'm not trying to say he's a player you'd rather have,
but he has been unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (02:37:42):
His defense does matter. He does.
Speaker 2 (02:37:44):
He's throwing rockets out thereas the Astros actually making me
upset again about Josel two. I got upset about jose
Al two Bay's base running in the middle of the
World Series. I understand I didn't expect to do that.
Well reason too unfortunately, Yes I did. Yes, very much
more funny, very entertaining, and Dodgers lose.
Speaker 1 (02:38:05):
I don't.
Speaker 16 (02:38:06):
I'd like to say, I think again, what they got
two chances? That's how they have to look at it.
The fans will look at it, and they won't. They'll
look at it as like, we don't have two chances.
Speaker 1 (02:38:14):
We have one.
Speaker 16 (02:38:14):
We're gonna win the World Series Friday night in Game
six at home, and we're gonna celebrate case closed.
Speaker 1 (02:38:19):
That'd be beautiful.
Speaker 2 (02:38:20):
That also would be a gut feeling hit for Jonathan
Allen who said that they were gonna win the next
three games on Tuesday.
Speaker 1 (02:38:24):
We call them mister baseball now, a baseball savant. I
heard at their baseball So that'd be that'd be nice.
Speaker 2 (02:38:30):
I want you to be right, Jonathan, I said that
on Tuesday because the Dodgers and apparently, yeah, they're already
their fans are already.
Speaker 1 (02:38:36):
Like, well, you see, we said that this is a
team with flaws. See this proves that we're not perfect
and we don't have these these these financial advantages don't
mean a whole lot if you if you don't win
the games in the World Series, No, you still have
all the advantages. You still get Basically the uh, the
Japanese League is your farm system, and then you lose that,
it's gonna make it even sweeter. Go Blue Jays, two
(02:38:59):
shots to win to Rogers Center Center. As you said,
just get it done in game six.
Speaker 16 (02:39:03):
As the Dodgers face elimination, their deficiencies are showing up everywhere.
Writers can't crank those out fast enough as the series
shifts in the Blue jays favor. That was Ken Rosenthal's
piece after last night's game. Oh my god, did he
really say that?
Speaker 1 (02:39:20):
Yep? What are their their deficiencies? That Otani bets and Freeman, Well,
let's throw Will Smith. You said they're deficient. What are
they Otani bets?
Speaker 16 (02:39:30):
You had me at Otani betts because a lot of
people think Otani bets and they let him say.
Speaker 1 (02:39:36):
Test I think he's just a nice guy. I think
he got duped.
Speaker 16 (02:39:40):
Uh, they're old. Those are some of their Look at
look ahead, Freeman's getting older.
Speaker 1 (02:39:44):
Bets have another game for like sixteen hours, okay, and
it's it's baseball, okay. That's the only thing that you
could play for If if there was a seven hour
football game, there would have been multiple people sent to
the hospital. There's a seven hour basketball game. People are
dying on the floor. It's baseball, Okay. I'm not saying
(02:40:05):
it's not hard. It's just not the most taxing sport
out there. Heaven forbid a seven hour soccer game. Don't
make your one nothing or no goalscorer joke, Adam Wexler.
People would be dying. It's baseball, okay, guys.
Speaker 16 (02:40:16):
The reason why football and football have their end of
game scenarios when the time runs out scenarios is because
you can't do the like baseball you want to play forever.
Football players like, what did you?
Speaker 4 (02:40:30):
I know?
Speaker 16 (02:40:31):
Some people poke fun at soccer here and there. Some
people they got how many guys on the field unless
someone's carded off? Well, I mean you kill me, I
mean carded off card. So you got nine or ten
guys running around until they are substituted for for ninety
minutes up and down a very very large field or pitch. Yes, well,
(02:40:55):
I said soccer, So I'm gonna stick with field instead
of football.
Speaker 1 (02:40:58):
And pitch.
Speaker 16 (02:40:59):
It's yes, baseball is a ton of I gotta get
off my feet because I've been standing.
Speaker 1 (02:41:07):
It's a lot of chewing and a lot of spitting.
There's more spitting, their arrors walking.
Speaker 2 (02:41:11):
I think in the in a baseball game, like it
is kind of funny to me, the excuses being not
necessarily excuses being made.
Speaker 1 (02:41:18):
But as you said, efficiency of the Dodgers.
Speaker 16 (02:41:21):
I show hate pitching the next day after the eighteen
inning game. Essentially he was just attending. He bat batted
nine times, they walked him five times. But in between
innings and during the other innings when his teammates are
defending and pitching, he's watching.
Speaker 1 (02:41:35):
Well, in the dugout, he did cut into a sleep time.
Did you see his sleep? He gets like twelve hours
of sleep a day. He's the jj Watt of sleep
a life major league baseball.
Speaker 2 (02:41:45):
Well, I think you say Kakuchi did that to him too, right, Yes,
so they were like, oh man, he didn't get his sleep.
He only got ten hours today, you Saysochi's a little off, like.
Speaker 1 (02:41:54):
What he only got ten hours? Then go out with
the boys very often. Yeah, I guess he doesn't. He's
at home doing I don't know, going sleepy, doing sleepy?
Is that what he's guessed.
Speaker 2 (02:42:05):
He's at home doing the sleepy well Shoho tani. He
must say, well, he hasn't been good and was it
a couple of games or was it? Yeah, he's oh
for his last seven, probably because what a slump. He's
over his last seven because he got on base nine
times and he missed out on his twelve hours of sleep.
So maybe with the day off he'll bounce back on Friday,
hopefully not go Blue Jays. All right, that is gonna
(02:42:28):
do it for the Matt Thomas Show. Here on a
Sports Talk seven ninety with Ross but without Matt Thomas.
