Speaker 1 (00:00):
Is The Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Ten o one inh Town. Hello, and welcome in to
a Tuesday edition of The Matt Thomas Show with Ross
Without Matt Thomas. He is out traveling with the Houston Rockets,
who lost last night in Salt Lake City to the
Utah Jazz. More on that in just a moment. But
(00:45):
we are here for the next four hours where I
will be joined by well, I don't know. I asked
Chris Gordy to hang out. He said he would. He
is not here at the moment. I have reached out
to both Adams and asked them if they wanted to
hang out for a little bit. Of them have responded,
so we'll see. Is it four straight hours of Ross
solo with Jonathan Allen? Of course? Into the fold. Jonathan,
(01:08):
how are you on this beautiful Tuesday. I'm cold. I'm chilly, man,
it is a little cold. Like I came up here
in the I went to the elevator and there was
this girl. I don't know. Tell me how awkward of
an interaction was this on my part one to ten
This girl, a young lady who she was wearing like
this big like if you went on a trip to
(01:31):
New Mexico and you got like a Mexican blanket, yet
it was like fortified with a bunch of fluff and
cushiony down whatever. And I just saw her and I
blurted out. I was like, wow, you look bundled up,
and she's just like hah. I was like, oh well,
I wasn't trying to be weird or anything. I just noticed, like, okay, good,
(01:55):
I thank you, Jonathan, because I was because then we
got in the elevator and then nobody said a word,
and I was like, this is weird. But whatever, I mean,
she just she just looked like she walked in from
the igloo. That's all I was trying to say. I
don't know, maybe you know what, maybe I shouldn't have
said what I said. At least got a little chuckle though.
I mean, hey, I don't know was it awkward nervous
chuckle or was it a good chuckle? Who knows? Who cares?
(02:17):
I mean, I wasn't hitting on her or anything. I
was just making a comment. So anyways, Yeah, it's cold
out there, man, It's like it's like in the thirties.
I love this. Do you like cold weather? Johnathan? I
know you're from a so explain this again. You you
started your life in California and lived a lot of
your life in Dallas.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
Yeah, so North Texas. So this is kind of what
I'm used to really, And I went to Kentucky for
a little bit.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Okay, yeah, how Kentucky's pretty damn cold.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Right, Yeah, it's like this starting. You guys have snow
days up there.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
Dude.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
I went to class one day and you know when
those you don't know what slippery ice, so you just
walking on it.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
That's not good, man, Flip on my back. I had
lost the you can you can land on your tailbone
and be out a couple of weeks, man, I was.
This was no joke slipping. You were weaiting?
Speaker 3 (03:01):
Was we were people around?
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Was anybody around behind.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
The parking garage? I was in there, just embarrassed. Okay,
that was good. I had when I was in college.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
I had a girlfriend who she felt like, uh, you
have you seen the ut tower? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, right
in front the duty tower. There's a bunch of steps.
It's like rocky steps. And I was meeting her between
classes and she fell down steps. She fell down about
a good fifteen steps. I can laugh now, But at
(03:35):
the time I was like, oh my god, And like
ten people came by, like, oh my god, are you okay?
And she was fine. She had like scraped her shin
or something, and and she was totally fine. But the
worst part was just how embarrassed she was. So you
weren't very embarrassed. No, you looked around and everything. Everything
was cool. You didn't have to be embarrassed in front
(03:55):
of everybody. Okay, Well, yeah it's cold out there, but
at least it's not icy. I like this type of cold,
like anything. I like anything thirty plus. When you start
getting below freezing and you have frozen snot in the
ice on your car and all that other stuff, I'm
not down anything up into and including thirty two degrees,
I'm down with. I think it's fun. I think it's
(04:17):
a nice change of pace to one hundred and ten
degrees and humidity. I'd I'd rather be thirty two degrees.
It's not even cool.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
Let's play ktrh right now, it's gonna be this is
the lowest of the week is gonna be. Are you
trying out for the weather and k no, I'm a
jack of all trades.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
I see that all right. News Radio seven forty kg
RH Weather Report. Here's Jonathan Allen, go.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
Ahead, all right, So today's gonna be the highest. We
fifty three with the lowes thirty nine sending a very
cloudy sky.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
Is today going bast of the week.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
We got storms seventy percent and one hundred percent for
Thursday thunderstorms, and it's gonna be the highest sixty six.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
So be prepared, get your poncho ready to go to work.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
I was gonna tell you gotta throw in a little
kischy something, and then you did it.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
They always throw in something at the end. Make sure
you buddle up your children and put those mittles on
your kittens. It's gonna be a cold one tonight. Make
sure you cover up those plants. You always gotta throw
in a little personal note. You did that. Wow. Ten
out of ten, Jonathan Allen. You are hired as a
as Sports Talk seven ninety weather man. We appreciate you.
(05:25):
All right. So it's a little cold out there. As
I said, Matt Thomas is out. We do have sports
stuff to get you. I didn't even lay out the
phone number seven to one three two one two five
seven ninety. If you would like to get in seven
one three, two one two five seven ninety tweets at
Sports RV. And you know what, I would appreciate a
(05:46):
follow on my Instagram at sports RV. I know, if
you're an Aggie fan, you're not gonna want to hear this,
But if you want to see a couple of the
photos and videos that I took while at dk R
Stadium on Friday where the Longhorns got the big win
over the Texas and m geest even though that is
not going to vault them to the playoffs, I have
that up. They're always trying to post more content and
I really would appreciate a follow at sports RV on
(06:09):
my Instagram. So mentioned you have the Rockets losing last
night to the Utah Jazz. It's funny because literally yesterday
on this show, we were talking with Matt Thomas and
I mentioned on the pregame on the Rockets launch Pad,
which I know you all caught at seven o'clock last
night here on Sports Talk seven ninety, like, hey, none
of the Rockets got four losses, and they got a
(06:31):
great record and they're number three in the West. But
even all these losses are are great in a way.
They lost to the thunder they should have won. They
lost to the Pistons, who are number one in the East.
They should have won that game. Then they lost a
close one to the Nuggets, and they lost one of
the Spurs when they still had Wimby, like nothing to
be embarrassed about in this bunch. And then they lost
(06:54):
last night to the Utah Jazz. It just wasn't pretty.
It was their first number of things rolled into one
in my opinion, it was their first game on a
back to back. They didn't look super fresh, even though
there was no travel in between it. I don't know
what happened. I made a joke on Twitter last night,
like is it the Salt Lake City nightlife? Like? Why
(07:15):
are the Rockets not able? What is there to do?
Were they were studying the Book of Mormon late last
night at the Bible study? I don't know what they
were doing in Salt Lake City, but apparently they They
had back to back legs yesterday. They couldn't make a three.
They had been the number one or number two three
point shooting team all season long, and I gotta tell you,
(07:38):
I gotta be honest, I don't expect that to continue.
And I just I mean Kevin Durant's very good, but
read Shepherd had been shooting out of his mind, Alprinching
Goon's way ahead of where he had been career. Javarius
Smith Jr. A couple of ticks of where he's been
in his career. I just do expect a little bit
of regression unless Read Shepherd and Javarius Smith Jr. And
(07:59):
Alprinching Gooner just going to be excellent three point shooters
off for eighty two games, which I said, I don't expect,
but I will accept. Let's put it that way. But
there was some three point regression for the Rockets. They
just looked a little bit lethargic. The Utah Jazz were
shooting the freaking lights out, and I talked about that.
We talk about this on the show a lot. For
those of you that aren't tuned into the NBA, I
(08:19):
understand it's NFL right now, it's college football, but I'm
talking about those of you who have tuned it out
for years. If you come back, you're going to be
impressed with how talented every single team is. The Utah
Jazz are terrible. It came into the game six and thirteen.
Rockets beat him by twenty eight the day before. But
(08:40):
they have Lori Markinen, who is a guy who is
a thirty point thread and has been an All star.
Use Off Nurkic is a good big man who can
drop fifteen and ten on any given night. He gave
them eighteen and nine. I mean, Kyante George is a
good player. Ace Bailey is a lottery.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
Pick who is starting to come into his own and
score a bunch of points.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Like the Utah Jazz. Even the bad teams in the NBA,
the Brooklyn Nets, Michael Porter Junior went off for like
thirty seven points, and Nets are terrible. Michael Porter Junior
is pretty good, and they got Cam Thomas whoever else
on that team. They're pretty good. Like these bad teams
even in this day and age, have good players and
they are dangerous, and they were dangerous last night against
(09:23):
the Houston Rockets. Lori Marketen had twenty nine points. Konte
Jordan George excuse me, went off for twenty eight. As
I said, eighteen to nine from Yusuf Nurkic. You couldn't
make three. They were making their threes. You had dead legs.
The defense wasn't great last night. The Utah Jazz scored
thirty plus points in every single quarter and it just
turned out to be one of those games you would
(09:46):
have liked to end the four game road trip with
a win, but the Rockets were unable to do that.
They had won eight of their last nine. They still
are very good, but you can cross that off the list.
The Rocklands Tappitt had a bad loss all year long.
That was a bad loss last night. I mean, even
as I said, a talented Utah Jazz team, eleven and
a half point favorites were the Rockets last night and
(10:07):
they weren't able to get it done. So that was
a disappointment. They traveled today. As I said, Matt Thomas
is out. He's on the team plane. Not sure if
they're in the air if they made it late last night,
and Matt Thomas is just sleeping in, which is totally fine,
that's his right. I'm not trying to be snarky about
that or anything. So uh, they will be off today
and then they will be facing off against the Sacramento
(10:27):
Kings tomorrow, and then they have a game against the
Suns coming up on Friday. For a couple of home
games coming up here for your Houston Rockets. Of course,
here on Sports Talk seven ninety we are your home
for your Houston Rockets. So Rockets lose last night, we
still have a lot of other stuff to get to
here on the show. I'm flying solo right now, so
if you want to be my co host for a
(10:48):
couple of minutes, you can get in on the phone
line seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
Is the phone number seven one three two one two
five seven ninety if you would like to get in.
You could also interact on the social media's if you
would like, you can follow me at sports RV on
Instagram and you can tweet me at sports RV on
Twitter and I'll read your tweet and we can interact
(11:10):
that way. If you would like. Rockets lose last night, Texans,
I'll get in a little bit more national shine for
these victories that they've had now beating the Colts and
then the Bills in back to back weeks. National college
football stuff to get to. Did you see what Lane
Kiffin said yesterday? We will do you do you know
(11:32):
what I'm talking about, Jonathan, I'm reading it right now.
We are gonna talk about that later. On in the show,
and I was hoping Chris Gordy would be around at
some point so we can talk about that with him
as well. We got gut feelings coming up at eleven thirty,
We got news at noon, We got anything you guys
want to get to, a lot of sports stuff going on.
Seven to one three two one two five seven ninety.
(11:54):
Is the phone number seven to one three two one
two five seven ninety. It is the Matt Thomas Show
with Ross with Matt Thomas with you until two o'clock
here on Sports Talk seven ninety. I am resisting the
(12:16):
urge to do a guttural scream for this song. I
don't know if you can tell I still have a
little bit of a lost voice from this weekend. Does
it sound normal to you?
Speaker 3 (12:31):
Yeah, what's up? But it sounds a little bit more
like I'm doing the quiet storm on a Sports Talk
seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
I lost my voice a little bit at dk R
on Friday, and then it had been recovering over the weekend,
and then yesterday I did this show, and then I
did a pre and post game for the Rocket. So
I think we're back on the men. We need to
be back on the hot tea and honey regimen or
something like that, because well my voice is struggling a
little bit. So that means if you want to get
(12:58):
in on the phone lines, you will have free rate
to say just about anything that you want, Uh, if
you want to talk about biscuits and gravy, or if
you want to talk about the latest Rockets loss, or
if you want to talk about basically anything you want
to get to. Phone lines are open for you here
on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Matt is out,
so you can get in for a couple of minutes
(13:19):
if you would like. Seven one three two one two
five seven ninety is the phone number seven one three
two one two five seven ninety. Again, you can send
tweets to at sports RV if you would like to
get in this way. Speaking of Matt Thomas, he sent
a picture to me yesterday of try tip and then
ask me if tri tip is considered brisket, which it
(13:42):
is not. Those are two different cuts of meat. I
guess he's in Utah, Californians. I think they use try
tip and they roast it and it's kind of like
their version of brisket. It is, I mean, it's a
higher quality cut of meat. But it's not cooked to
the quality that Tech does brisket. That's why you get
you gotta cook that bad boy twelve hours because of
(14:04):
I mean, how tough and chewy it is. But once
you get it tender with that perfect Texas bark and
you get it with that uh, with that post oak
to all the beautiful, wonderful Texas a way, with just
a little salt and pepper, there's nothing that beats that.
But try tip is not brisket, No, it is not.
There's that that is. That is two different cuts of me.
All right, Anyways, I digress. Uh, let's see what's going
(14:27):
on in the sports world. You had Monday night football
last night. Did you see Jackson Dart flying around the
football field? We need every quarter?
Speaker 1 (14:40):
You loved that?
Speaker 2 (14:41):
No, I I was loving that.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
We were you were you standing up clapping into your
couch like, I mean, like that's what's happened.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
I mean, he missed a couple of games with a concussion, right,
like Jackson Dart? Like, do we have to somebody's gotta
have a sit down talk with him because he's one
of the one of the great things about him and
the way that he plays, and that he plays hard.
He wears his heart on his sleeve. He tries everything
(15:11):
he possibly can to win. But this is something that
that yeah, it'll need to get out of your game.
And young quarterbacks learn this either the easy way or
the hard way, and right now Jackson Dart is learning
it the hard way. He got absolutely popped by a
New England Patriots linebacker last night. And I didn't even
(15:32):
think it was a dirty play. I saw the planet
because if you so, I thought it was kind of close.
If you look at the sideline angle that they they showed,
Jackson Dart could have gone out of bounds for about
good five yards and then he stays towing the line
trying to get that first down. No, absolutely, did you
(15:54):
ever die?
Speaker 4 (15:54):
Man?
Speaker 2 (15:55):
Did you ever play NFL blitz back in the day? Okay, okay, yeah,
he got NFL blitz. He would fly like a ragged man.
That was you could have saw that on like a
movie or a television show and you'd be like, that's
not realistic, that's not how it works. That would have
never happened. And he just went.
Speaker 3 (16:16):
It was like he was pulled on wires in a
matrix movie or like Mission.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
Impossible or something. It was insane, Jackson Dart, you gotta learn.
But Jackson Dart is my computer updown and I can't
see you because our computers videos are broken. So I
imagine hopefully you're giving me a thumbs up pulling me try.
Here's Jackson Dart saying that he's not gonna change the
way that he's gonna play like I'm gonna keep playing aggressive.
Speaker 5 (16:40):
No, hopefully everybody can take a second to watch my
tape going back to high school and realize that this
is not a shock like, I play the game aggressively.
I took one hit that people are talking about. I slid,
got out of the way, have a lot of hits.
So I appreciate people, you know, wanting to you know,
me to be healthy and all that stuff, and I
(17:02):
want to be healthy too. But I play this game aggressive,
so I'm not I'm not gonna just change how I
play the game.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
Wrong answer, Jackson Dart, Come on pop every time. Look
what happens anytime any of us get criticized, Jonathan, We're
gonna be defensive. We're gonna say this is the way
we do things. And I understand, Jackson Dart, You're young.
You know everything, You've been successful, You're a first round pick,
You've had a lot of success early in the NFL.
(17:29):
But somebody needs to take him aside and say wrong answer.
I mean, the start of this is where it's really
a problem. Like I'm gonna keep playing aggressive.
Speaker 5 (17:39):
No, hopefully everybody can take a second to watch my
tape going back to high school.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
Okay, I'm sorry. This is not high school, my friend.
You're not even where where is Jackson Dart even from?
I don't know he's from.
Speaker 6 (17:53):
He's from Caysville, Utah. He went to Corner Canyon High
School in Draper, Utah. This is not two a Utah football,
my friend. You're not playing up against a bunch of
people who aren't allowed to have caffeine and alcohol.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
All right. You are playing against the best of the best.
And maybe that works in Draper, Utah. That doesn't work
when you're going up against Mike Vrabels New England Patriots
who are now eleven and two and just just about
caved your chest cavity in this is there are levels
to this, and you are at the highest level. If
(18:35):
you're saying you're gonna keep on running around and doing
all this crazy stuff.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
Then you're just gonna get hurt. That's just the way
it is. You gotta figure out a way to get
out of bounds. You can be aggressive, but if you
want to lower your shoulder and lower your helmet and
continue to run when this, dude, I'll tell you, any
one given NFL linebacker is better than anybody probably in
the whole state of Utah in high school football probably
(19:02):
and not even like come on now, this is ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (19:07):
You gotta have a well, you know what, maybe he
has been concussed too many times. We had about it. No,
this is how I always play. Well, Yeah, he got
your brain rattled too much, Jackson, this is ridiculous. You can't.
You can't keep doing this. He's got to figure something out,
and he's he's got to learn, and somebody's got to
take him aside, whether it be Mike Kafka, the head coach,
who I want to say, Mike Kafka had like a
(19:30):
concussion or two when he was in Northwestern back in
the day. But anyways, Jackson Dart, I mean, you figure
it out, dude, especially for people who have you on
your fantasy team, which I don't. I picked him up
for one week and then cut him like an idiot.
But uh, he's not gonna keep doing this and don't
keep digging your hole. And I like, I understand you
(19:50):
probably feeling attacked and like, this is this is how
I's always done it, This is how I play. This
is in my DNA to look at my high school tape.
We're not looking at your high school tape. We're looking
at the end where you are flying like you've been
launched out of a cannon. I mean goodness, all right.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety is
the phone number that happened last night on Monday night.
(20:12):
Football didn't have any material impact on anything that is
going on with the Houston Texans, except that I kind
of wanted the Patriots to lose so I could continue
to convince myself that the Texans can win the AFC.
I'm not saying they are. And I want to be clear,
because I was thinking about this yesterday. I was like
I kind of mentioned, like it popped into my head
that the Texans could win the AFC. I'm not calling
(20:33):
the AFC favorites. I'm not saying their marching to the
Super Bowl. I will say with my chest. This is
a super Bowl winning defense, super Bowl winning caliber defense,
but the offense has to do their part to an extent.
They're not good enough to where they can overcome a
bad offense. But could you get CJ. Stroud catching lightning
(20:58):
in a bottle and getting hot the playoffs along with
Nico Collins and Woody Marks is playing better? And oh,
by the way, I checked the offensive line rankings last week, Jonathan,
the Texans are twenty first according to Pro Football Focused.
Its solid twenty first, looking a little better. Maybe this
is a combination they swisted up and yeah, I think
(21:20):
I think ed Ingram has gotten better in pass pro.
He's run blocking has been great, His pass pro has
gotten better. Trent Brown has been a better options right tackle.
That way you can kick Titus Howard into guards, so
you're shoring up things with guards and onto Ursery continues
to get better every week. And it's not like they're
all Pro bowlers. I mean we're talking about being h
you know, we're we're gonna throw a parade for them
being twenty one out of thirty two. But if they
(21:40):
can continue to get better, improve play more cohesively because
they're getting the same guys out there and gel and
be a middle of the pack offensive line to where
you get some wood run game with Woody Marx who's
been improved. CJ. Stroud can play better than he did
early in the season when he was under dress every
single snap, and you've got a Super Bowl winning defense.
(22:03):
I'm just saying, I'm not saying. I'm just saying. The
Broncos and the Patriots are the toast of the AFC.
But how crazy is it for me to say the
Texans could, maybe could if if they get their act together,
especially on offense, win the AFC. Of course, we can
(22:23):
poke some holes and that argument we will discuss as
we go along. We got a lot of stuff to
get to here. On the Matt Thomas Show, James, I
see you on hold. You're coming up next. Anybody else
that wants to get in you can seven to one
three two one two five seven ninety. Is the phone
number seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
It is the Matt Thomas Show without Matt Thomas with
you until two o'clock here on Sports Talk seven.

Speaker 3 (26:39):
In the am here on Sports Talk seven A you
the Matt Thomas Show with Ross without Matt Thomas.
Speaker 2 (26:46):
He is out again. I mean I imagine they come
straight home after the game and he's just sleeping in,
or maybe he's up around town and just didn't want
to come in. That's okay, that's his right. Matt Thomas
is out. I am here. You guys can get in
if you'd like. Seven one three two one two five
seven ninety is the phone number seven one three two
one two five seven ninety. You could also follow me
(27:09):
on the social media's I would appreciate a follow. I
just got over thirteen hundred at sports RV on Instagram,
trying to get those numbers up. Those are rookie numbers
in this racket. We're trying to get those up. You
can also send a tweet at sports RV on Twitter
if you would like, Yes, I refuse to call it X.
That's just a ridiculous name. Find me on X what
does that even mean? Find me on Twitter at sports
(27:33):
RV seven one three two one two five seven ninety
is the phone number Chris Gordy should be joining along
here in just a little bit. We got the news
at noon, coming up at you guessed it noon? Also
got feelings at eleven thirty. That would be that should
be fun to rehash a couple of the ones from
last week. James has been holding longest on the phone line,
(27:54):
so we shall go in his directions. James, appreciate you
holding through the break. What do you got? Oh yeah,
that's my fault. You're right, I restarted the computer. I'm sorry.
Go ahead, go ahead, James, Sorry, that was that was
usual error and I was the user there, Go ahead, Okay.
Speaker 13 (28:10):
There's gonna be a lot of good teams that I'm
gonna make the playoffs this year in college football. Yes,
and I would like to see if Texas does out
make it. I would like to see Texas and maybe
play Michigan, or Texas play Clempton, or Texas play usc
somebody like that would be a really good bowl game.
Speaker 3 (28:23):
I think I was looking at the bowl projections yesterday,
but then a bunch of pop ups came up and
I didn't.
Speaker 2 (28:29):
I didn't. I was trying to look yesterday. I don't
know exactly where they would have Texas. I don't think
they're going to make the playoff. They didn't get anything
to go their way over the weekend. Are they one
of the best twelve teams in football? Yes? Are they
one of the best ten teams in college football? I
would submit yes, still the way that they're playing as
of late, but they're they're probably not going to get
in and I'm gonna be honest, I don't really care
(28:50):
what bowl game they play in. After that, it's who knows.
You have a bunch of opt out, you have guys
going to the draft, it's not really gonna matter. Bowl
games don't have anywhere near the cache that they used to,
so it's not really on my radar who they would
play against. I kind of don't care.
Speaker 13 (29:11):
Well, being a H fan, I would like to see EO.
H played Vanderbilt. If they get Vanderbilt or somebody of
that quality, it'd be great, But I don't, you know,
I want to have just played someone least some somebody decent.
Speaker 2 (29:21):
I mean, the bull projections I'm looking at from ESPN
both have Michigan versus Texas in the cheese It Citrus Bowl,
which would be a rematch of the two thousand and
four Rose Bowl two thousand and fourth season. It was
in the January of two thousand and five.
Speaker 4 (29:40):
So you're telling me you wouldn't watch that bowl game
if was taking.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
I didn't say I would watch. I didn't. I'm just
gonna say, I'm I'm not gonna, you know, act like
it's some huge, great match. It's the cheese it Citrus Bowl. James,
we're talking about cheese its, man, Come on exactly. Jesus
Jeesus are made with cheese, right, Why is it citrus cheesy?
Speaker 4 (30:00):
I'll give you that it's cheesy, But I still want
to see a good football game.
Speaker 2 (30:03):
Yeah, you want to see a good football game. And
I mean, it's that's two of the heritage brands in
college football history. But it's not like it would be
just some knockdown, drag out, can't mismatchup. That's that is
one of the things. And thank you James for making
the phone call. One of the things that the the
it's it's a number of things. Right, it's the playoff
that is going to devalue some of these other ball games,
(30:24):
but they were already kind of devalued. It was this oversaturation.
There's too many of them. Now you have players who
are opting out, who are transferring out. The team doesn't
look anything like it did during the regular season. And
I mean, it is what it is. I'm not going
to like lament it and say it's a sad or whatever.
Like should the the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl be
(30:47):
a huge game on everyone's radar. Probably not. It's it's
more college football that you can kind of flip on
and put on the background if you want to. But
certainly the rest of the bowl games have been valued.
With now the top twelve teams getting involved in the playoff,
that's what everybody's focused on, and that's what they should be.
(31:07):
So that's where I am on that, all right, Seven
one three two one two five seven ninety is the
phone number. Let's keep it rolling with George in West
U on the phone lines.
Speaker 14 (31:17):
What's up, George, Hey, I was just thinking I don't
know if you guys already covered this, but you know,
the last the Patriots last drive of the first half
yesterday was how to do a drive at the end
of a half, And it was such a dramatic contrast
to what the Texans did at the end of their
first half the day before. It really it really kind
(31:40):
of made me, I don't know, sad agree frustrated, but
it just really underscored how poorly the Texas the Texans, uh,
you know, were prepared for the opportunity, how poorly they
took advantage of the opportunity, and how well it can
be prepared for and how well it can be taken
advantage of. You know, have a plan for what you're
(32:01):
going to do in that last ninety seconds, be able
to take advantage of the opportunity if you get some
early gains, know when you're gonna take a time out,
as opposed to just sort of floundering and saying, oh, well,
we'll wait for the second half kickoff.
Speaker 13 (32:14):
It was.
Speaker 14 (32:15):
It was incredibly frustrating. I don't know how you guys
spelt By the way, I'm not so sure that cheese
its are made of cheese, because if they were made
of actual cheese, they wouldn't have to spell it in
a you know, non food way. So I'm not so
sure about that.
Speaker 2 (32:29):
I don't the commercials say it's all cheddar. They the
commercials wouldn't lie, would they.
Speaker 4 (32:33):
George, Okay, I guess that you gotta be there.
Speaker 2 (32:36):
No, I don't know. I'm just kidding. I don't know
what the hell is in those things, and they're and
they're discussed, and they're disgusting, by the way. I also,
I'll put my name on it. Yeah, cheese, its are terrible.
Come on, man, it's like goldfish for adults. Oh no,
they're quite saltier. Whatever. Sorry, thank you, George. But to
George's first point, what do you mean the Patriots they
(32:58):
had a minute seven and they had a good drive,
use their timeouts judiciously and got a field goal at
the end of the half. You're allowed to do that.
Couple of things here. First of all, it's always funny
when you look at like when I watch the Astros
and they're not able to move runners in scoring position,
and then I put on a national TV game and
somebody as some other team is doing it. It makes
you frustrated. So I understand where George is coming from,
(33:20):
Like you watch your team and they're like, why can't
they do this, and then somebody else does it and
it makes you even more angry. That's and that's the
big thing, the biggest, one of the biggest things that
deters me from really believing the Texans can go on
some magical run and win a Super Bowl as that
(33:40):
within the thin margins of making the right decision in
the right moment and being prepared for anything, I feel
like Demico Ryan's falls short. He is just not a
great in game manager. He's not great with his challenges,
or with his timeouts, or with his kick slid go decisions.
(34:01):
I mean get terrible though. Yeah he's terrible. He's not terrible,
but he But when you get to the when you
want to get to the super Bowl, you got to
be great. You got to excel, you have to be
you have to be prepared for everything. That's one of
the uh, i mean, underreported storylines of why the New
England Patriots are so good. For so many years with
Bill Belichick, they always knew when to take their time outs.
They always were able to push those margins and get
(34:24):
those extra three points, get that extra first down, get
that extra challenge, save those extra few seconds. The attention
to detail has to be so great, and I'm not
necessarily saying, you know, this is some big failure of his.
It's just when you want to go from a good
head coach, which I think Demiko Ryans is, to elite,
you have to do those little things and I don't
(34:44):
think he does them consistently enough.
Speaker 15 (34:46):
And it's a lot of stuff. I just feel like
it is you learn on the job, you learn a game.
It's hard to like practice for that kind of stuff,
you know, because so much of it, as Judge McCall,
I mean, that's honestly a lot of it is relying
on the people upstairs, the people in your ear, to go, hey, coach.
Speaker 2 (35:03):
Let's go nicky season. His headset like what was the
was it? Was it Christian Kirk who had dropped the
ball out of bounds? And then he throws the challenge
flag a couple of weeks ago, It's like, what are
we doing that? There's just from the yeah, yeah, that
probably wasn't his call. That wasn't Demiko Ryan saying, eh,
it looks like you got it, Like he yeah, he
got bad advice. That's what I'm saying, though, That's what
(35:25):
a good manager, a game manager's gonna do. Is gonna
He's gonna find good people underneath him to give him
the right advice. So that is one of my concerreents,
right advice. Say, my friend, do you hold this uncomfortable metal?
You got it all wrong.
Speaker 3 (35:42):
I'm not going to say anything else from that very
very troubling monologue.
Speaker 2 (35:47):
Get the right advice. Let's go. It's ridiculous. Okay, We're
gonna take a break. I've said ridiculous a lot of
times today because it's ridiculous. Where are you on Sunday?
Where am I to have a chance this upcoming Sunday? Yeah,
they're gonna win. Okay, what's up? You heard it here? First?
I called the upset last week. We're going back to back.
Maybe I'm a little more scared of Pat Mahomes than
(36:09):
I am a Daniel Jones on a brokenphibula, So I
back off. I reserved the right to back off on
that by Friday. But I'm feeling confident now. You know,
it's always week to week generally. Actually I feel very confident.
I feel terribly unconfident beginning of the week, and then
I feel confident as the week comes. It comes to
the clothes might be the opposite this week. Right now,
(36:30):
I'm feeling really good, but we'll think about that as
the week goes along. All right, Chris Gordy is here
hanging out. We got got feelings coming up at eleven thirty.
You want to get in you can. Seven one three
two one two five seven ninety is the phone number.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety. The
Matt Thomas Show with uh Ross without Matt Thomas rolls
along until two o'clock here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (37:00):
All right, growing along here an hour number one of
the Bad Tomas Show with Ross coming up at eleven o'clock.
Speaker 2 (37:09):
I want Chris Gordy's opinion on what Lane Kiffin had
to say yesterday. We will play that coming up in
about ten minutes. But we got a couple of of
you on hold, so let's go ahead and get to you.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety is
the phone number. Also at eleven thirty, we will have
gut feelings and I gotta come to collect cut feelings.
(37:32):
Coming up at eleven thirty. I'm feeling good. Yankees Keith
is on. Now you used to be Texans Keith. Now
you're back off the Texans bandwagon. We want you back, Keith.
What's the deal?
Speaker 16 (37:43):
Okay? First off, in uh in basketball season. For the
last thirty years, I've been.
Speaker 17 (37:49):
A Rockets keef.
Speaker 16 (37:50):
Okay, y'all seen them forget that. So anyway, I got,
I got. I want to show you a little something
and then I'm gonna get to you to what I
wanted to talk about with your your your Houston Texas.
So yesterday it was cold and it was raining a
little bit, right, So I had on my I had
on my Rockets hoodie, I got a ball head. I
(38:12):
had on a bull hat. And my wife said, well,
you need to you need to take an umbrella. I said,
I got man parts. I don't need no umbrella.
Speaker 17 (38:22):
Je Which gets me to my point.
Speaker 16 (38:25):
On Sunday, when your team had the ball with two
men's left, and you got two timeouts, and you got
a so called called superstar quarterback, well he ain't a superstar,
but let's just say he's a good quarterback. Your Houston
Texans didn't try to do a dog gone thing, and
(38:45):
then and and then they had two seconds left. At
that time, they too scared to even kick a field goal,
so they talked to your coach, you're a nutless coach,
and they asked him.
Speaker 2 (38:55):
Well, I would love you, I would rights listen to
his face.
Speaker 16 (39:02):
Well, I don't know if I want to do that,
but let's.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
Oh.
Speaker 16 (39:07):
He said, well, we got the league and we gonna
get the ball this time.
Speaker 2 (39:11):
The third corner.
Speaker 16 (39:12):
I said, what, you had two minutes to try to
put a nail in the coffin and y'all and you
had no nuts to even try something. That's what I'm saying.
You're in order to play big boy football, to hang
with the big boys, you gotta have a coach with nuts,
and Demiko Rians does not have any.
Speaker 2 (39:29):
He likes it in all right, Keith, I'm not gonna
put it the way that you did that he doesn't
have any nuts. I'm just gonna say that he is
an old school defensive type minded coach in the old
school trope is that defensive ball coach. I will win
with my defense and the run game, and I will
play conservative. We will play not to lose, and we're
gonna win games twenty to sixteen. That's basically what happened
(39:53):
on Sunday, and that's what Demiko Ryans likes to happen.
That's why they've been in a lot of one score games.
Like I think their last four wins are all by
one score. Let me pull this up. Yes, four wins
by one score, and all five of their losses are
by one score. This, unfortunately, is the razor's edge that
(40:15):
Demico Ryans likes to live on because he feels like
they can win with their defense. I will also dispute
that they did not try to score in the second
quarter because you pull up that drive. They had seven
plays pass, pass, pass, incompletion, incompletion, completed pass, and then
(40:37):
the hell mary, so they passed every single down. They
were trying to get a field goal to start, but
they let the clock run down a little bit too much,
especially after uh well now after the completion. No, actually
they didn't really mishandle the timeouts that much. But they
should have kicked the field goal at the forty seven.
(40:59):
Don't you normally add seventeen to that. That'd be about
a sixty four yard er, and Keymie Fairburn has the
capability of making a sixty four yarder. It was a
puzzling decision. Demiko Ryans was asked about it twice and
he didn't say anything. Either time. Both times he's like, look, guys,
we want to put points on the board. We want
to win. Like, yeah, okay, that's great, that's cool. You
(41:20):
can coach speak this to your blue in the face.
But why did you not kick the ball? That was
not answered? Were they scared it was gonna get blocked?
Did they feel like Keamy Fairburn didn't have the leg?
I mean he was indoors.
Speaker 3 (41:33):
Was the air conditioning blowing too hard in Lucas Oil Stadium?
Speaker 2 (41:36):
I don't know. There's no answer for that. So yes,
Demiko's Ryan's propensity to play close to the vest is
something I'm concerned about. He doesn't go for four downs
when he's supposed to. He doesn't he punts when he's
supposed to go for it, he kicks field goals when
he's supposed to go for it, and he plays not
(41:57):
to lose far too often. It's a problem I've talked
about with Steve Sarkisian that I have, although he's been
a little bit more aggressive. But there is an analytics
guy that I follow. His name is Ben Baldwin. Every
week he puts out stats who has cost themselves the
most win probability here? It actually he put it out
an hour ago. Win probability lost per game by being
(42:20):
afraid on four downs is what he calls it. Well,
the Steelers have passed the Texans, but the Texans are
second worst in football, and Mike Tomlin is a is
a notoriously conservative coach. Oh defensive ball coach. Likes to
win with the run game in his defense, kind of
the same thing. Kansas City up there, by the way
as well. Andy Reid not being very aggressive. So that
(42:41):
is something that is concerning me long term for the Texans.
I would like them to I'm not asking I'm not
asking him to be I would ask him, not asking
him to be Dan Campbell or anything, but a little
bit more aggressiveness would be nice. Joe tweeting in so
he's calling the player, not Kaylee. I think Kaylee is
(43:02):
under instructions to some extent from Demiko Ryans. I don't
know how. Look, I don't know this for a fact,
but if we if we just let's just look at
the the evidence. The evidence is a lot of times
Bobby Slowik was trying to establish the run more than
we wanted to see, and a lot of times Nick
Kayley had been trying to establish the run and play
conservative more more than we wanted to see.
Speaker 1 (43:24):
Now?
Speaker 2 (43:24):
Is that instructions from your head coach how I want
to win? Or is it just happened so that the
two back to back offensive coordinators are are not necessarily
turning the ball loose and also necessary haven't necessarily had
the opportunity because the offensive line isn't very good? All right?
(43:44):
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety is
the phone number if you want to get in. Uh,
seven one three two one two five seven ninety. We're
gonna go ahead and take a quick Top of the
Hour break when we come back. We have uh some
interesting Lane Kiffin audio to get. We got three of
you on hold. I promise we will get to you
as well. We got gut feelings coming up. At eleven thirty.
(44:05):
We are humming along on all cylinders. It is the
Matt Thomas Show with Ross without Matt Thomas. But before
we do get to that Top of the Hour break
is the Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 18 (44:16):
With Ross spot.
Speaker 2 (44:27):
Our number two of the Matt Thomas Show with Ross
without Matt Thomas. He is out traveling with the Rockets,
or I think he is back. Anyways, Chris Gordy is
here in his seat. I am here Ross virial with
you until two o'clock. We got gut feelings coming up
at eleven thirty. We got you folks on the phone
lines at seven one three two one two five seven
(44:51):
ninety seven one three, two, one two five seven ninety So,
Chris Gordy, we know mister SEC, mister LSU football a
couple of days removed from the well. I don't want
to go full Mark burn on you. What are your
emotions as you went through this whole just from your
your fan perspective of Lane Kiffen who right or wrong?
(45:16):
We'll see the future will bart out the crown jewel
of this coaching carousel at an SEC program going to
the playoff ends up with LSU, And of course a
lot of different layers of this that we can get into.
But just see how you felt throughout this. Did you
really want Lane Kiffin? Are you happy? Ecstatic over the
(45:37):
moon about Lane Kiffin now LSU head coach? Well, hang on,
let me just give you some quick news that just broke.
Speaker 15 (45:42):
Vanderbilt has just flipped the number three player in the country,
one of the top quarterbacks. So you of age just
got the top player in the country, the number one quarterback,
the number two quarterback. Jared Curtis just flipped his commitment
from Georgia to Vanderbilt from Georgia. That's significant because this
is going to be the air Repair to Diego. Yeah,
who if you're following the Vegas odds this morning, just
(46:02):
became the Heisman favorite. Now here's the problem with Pavia.
He doesn't play this weekend. The number two and number
three guys do Ohio State plays Indiana Fernando Mendoza versus
Julian saying, whoever wins that game, I feel like he's
going to jump jump over Pavia for the Heisman favorite.
But still pretty cool that Vanderbilt football is irrelevant on
(46:24):
the national stage at ten and two, has the is
currently the favorite for the Heisman and just flip the
number three player in the country to come play with it. Crazy,
but anyway, that's that's the state of where college football
is right now. A few things I do locked on
SEC and I cover the SEC landscape as a whole.
I did go to LSU. I am somewhat of an
LSU fan, but I do I take a step back
(46:46):
and I can call it like I see it.
Speaker 2 (46:48):
I'm fair.
Speaker 15 (46:49):
I mean, look, I admit Brian Kelly failed. I mean
it's when they failed. You know, you have to talk
about it in admit it. But from a perspective of
I have to and I keep ask Ole Miss fans
this all all week. Take your fandom out of it
is lsu and upgrade over the Ole Miss job. Of course,
(47:09):
if you're being unbiased, it absolutely hands down. Is so
from that perspective, Lane Kiffin, I think one it looked
at it and said, all my mentors all told me
to go here. Pete Carroll told him, Nick Saban told
him Nick Saban won a championship there. And then when
you look at the two buffoons that less Miles and
it Oseron were and they both won national championships there.
(47:30):
It's just easier to win championship. The path is there.
You still got to put in the work things after
the line, you're not guaranteed. Look, I thought Brian Kelly
was gonna do it. He didn't put in the work.
That was the problem. Brian Kelly came down thought he's
just gonna a name and reputation alone. No, you gotta
have the right coaching staff. You gotta have everything right,
Ballane's still hungry. He's fifty, Like, I think he's going
(47:52):
to work there.
Speaker 19 (47:52):
Now.
Speaker 15 (47:52):
It is much harder to win a championship now, yes,
you know, before it used to be in the less
miles days, it was win the SEC. Yeah, in the
BCS championship, it was that easy. And that's kind of
one of the reasons.
Speaker 2 (48:03):
I don't I mean ed Ozon won a four team playoff,
but yeah, but he also had Degres. Look that team
would have won a twelve I know you're gonna get
mad at me for saying this. The Nick Saban title
was split, correct with USC, That was a split one.
That also, but they did win the BCS game, right,
(48:24):
and that was it was kind of a different era,
and all those those guys washed out at the school
within a couple of years and they just weren't very
good coaches. But yeah, I'm gonna tell you, like, if
you want to give you the Texas perspective, Mac Brown
wasn't some coaching genius. He got a bunch of five
star players and you look at there were like eleven
or twelve NFL players on that two thousand and five
team and they won the championship, and then, like you said,
(48:46):
ed Ozon, that twenty nineteen LSU team is just littered
with NFL players all over the place. But I was
just curious in this day and age because as you
just said, Vanderbilt just flipped a number three recruit. Kurt
Signetti just signed a huge deal to stay for the
Indie AA Hoosiers. The Vanderbilt coach just got a big
(49:08):
deal to stay there like the These coaches aren't are
kind of flipping conventions on its head in this nil era.
That's why I was curious to see, like LSU the
old world. Like ten years ago, I would have said
it absolutely makes one hundred percent since and I'm not
saying it doesn't say it makes sense either now because
(49:30):
LSU is the better job. LSU is the bigger job,
and the better recruiting base and just prestige and all
that stuff. But uh, to make the the small incremental
step up, I was a little bit surprised, but not
gonna say that I was totally surprised.
Speaker 15 (49:47):
I will say this because I was diving into the number.
So the last four year Lane Kiff and adamle Miss
they called him the portal King. Why did They call
him the portal King because four the last four years
at ole Miss, he has had a top five portal class. Now,
why did he have top five portal classes? Because it's
hard to recruit to Oxford. I went back and looked
(50:08):
all his recruiting classes in the last four years, of
all ranked in the twenties, with the exception to one,
it was sixteenth. He can't even sniff the top ten
in recruiting. Guess what LSU has done consistently year to
year out their top twelve, top most of the year's
top ten, some years top five in recruiting Louisiana, you
don't really compete with anybody. You don't compete with anybody
else in state. If you're at Alabama, you're competing with
(50:30):
Auburn in state. If you're Texas, you're competing with Texas
A and M Baylor, Texas Tech, all these schools in state.
Speaker 2 (50:36):
Now, obviously Texas is a much bigger state.
Speaker 15 (50:38):
But Louisiana per capita, the amount of NFL talent or
great college players they put out, it's just ridiculous. It's Georgia,
Mississippi and Louisiana per capita put out ridiculous elite talent.
So if he could put up that wall, put it
this way, LSU has already committed to him twenty five
million dollars in revenue share an nil and that to
(51:00):
go buy portal classes. So let's say he continues putting
together top five portal classes and we'll now have top
ten recruited.
Speaker 2 (51:07):
I mean, is he gonna have money to do both
of those things they've committed to it. I mean they
would be a little bit surprised. And you are competing
with I mean there are LSU, I mean Louisiana recruits
who go to Alabama, go to Texasco. Other there are.
Speaker 15 (51:20):
But I even looked at the numbers, Brian Kelly, in
this class alone, eight of the top ten players in
the state of Louisiana.
Speaker 2 (51:25):
Are going to LSU. Okay, So if you keep putting
that proverbial fence up, okay, and see that's that's what
I'm kind of also wondering, Brian Kelly, what it's been
about the top ten recruiting class.
Speaker 15 (51:36):
Briference Okay, both Lane has every year had ridiculous offenses
and ridiculous quarterback play. He took a Ferris State Division
two quarterback this year and made him a stud Jackson Dart,
Matt Corral. He's always had, guys, I'm just not convinced
I've seen it. I'm just not because I haven't seen
(51:56):
it before.
Speaker 2 (51:57):
From from lane Lane, Kiffns offenses be the best of
the time. They've been good. They have been. Yeah, when
he had a bunch of players at Alabama, Steve Sarkizian
won won a championship in Alabama. The last six years,
Little Miss, he said, great, they've been They just haven't
been great. I just haven't been super impressed. You haven't
watched them. Okay, maybe I have. You're right, I haven't
been great. You're right, breaking down Ole Miss tape every
(52:19):
single week. I'm gonna give you exactly. That's why. That's
another reason why he's going.
Speaker 15 (52:22):
Look, he was bitching about the fans, uh and and
not coming to the the you know, they were undefeated
and he they were playing a cupcake and he was
bitching because the fans weren't there.
Speaker 2 (52:32):
It's like, guys, this is.
Speaker 15 (52:34):
The golden age of Old Miss football. You guys didn't
even come out and support us. And uh my buddy
Matt Moscone pointed this out a few weeks ago when
ole Miss played Florida, they set a record for the
most fans in attendance at at whatever their stadium, Miss
von Hemingway. They had the most set the fan attendance
record attendance. They've never had that many fans at the
(52:54):
at a game before. That same day at eleven a
m l s U played two and seven. Arkats on
issue was what five and four or whatever or whatever
they want. They had more fans at the LSU game
than Ole Miss did in their record setting attendance. It's
just it's a bigger brand, it's a bigger it is
support fan support. That's just kind of bad f I
(53:14):
can't really put my finger on this. I just got
a feeling that this is just not going to work out.
When you work out at Tennessee, workout. It didn't work
out at USC. He had a great year in Tennessee
and he left. Had he stayed there, he was seven
and six. No, he was better than at Tennessee.
Speaker 2 (53:30):
I have it right in front of me, seven and six,
the great year at Tennessee, lost the Chick fil A ball.
I don't know if he was there for that.
Speaker 3 (53:36):
So seven and six at Tennessee and then four years
at USC.
Speaker 2 (53:40):
Now maybe he's older, he's more mature whatever, going back,
like yeah.
Speaker 3 (53:45):
Yeah, well exactly, and we got twenty years of sample size.
The guy's only won the c USA.
Speaker 2 (53:51):
On the last decade. He's been good with zero top
ten finishes. Okay, but but but you're you're angling it
to make your point. How what if I said it
this way?
Speaker 15 (54:01):
Ole Miss has never had back to back to back
ten win seasons, Like, that's the great This was the
greatest run Ole Miss has had since nineteen sixty.
Speaker 2 (54:09):
That's good. So now they play what they all said
they also had. They also didn't play twelve thirteen games
back then either.
Speaker 15 (54:15):
It still is the run they've met, like thirty two
wins in three years.
Speaker 2 (54:19):
Who else has done that? I don't know that many? Good,
very few.
Speaker 20 (54:23):
What Bryan, I know you're gonna you're gonna stump for
your guy. I'm not fine, But I'm literally taking out
of the equation. If you're knowing you and that's what
he has done, I'm telling you, Okay.
Speaker 15 (54:34):
Now, you now, if you want to question loyalty, will
he be there for you? That's what I'm saying. It's
just a question. But he do you really think he's
not going to succeed.
Speaker 2 (54:42):
I don't think to the left now this is it's
unfortunate that we have to hold the standardive is if
it's not a national champion, no, I can make the
play He can make the playoff.
Speaker 15 (54:52):
Absolutely, And they said consistently to make the playoff ten
and two in the SEC get you in. As long
as you played a competitive enough scout, you will play
a company.
Speaker 2 (55:01):
You gonna have the SEC schedule bounce your way like
the Texas A and a Maggie's. It can happen. So
I mean he can, and I think it's I don't
want to be a hypocrite because I think it's an
unfair standard to say win a national championship or you're
a failure because there's too lsus. I know exactly. It's ridiculous.
And we have Matt Thomas and I were arguing. He
(55:21):
was saying it's a massive failure if he doesn't like
is this year a massive failure for Sark, I would
say no, but if you get four years of this,
it's a massive failure. It's just so it's too difficult.
Speaker 15 (55:31):
Here's the other thing that's very intriguing for for lank
Kiff and how they built this contract. Yes, they're paying
them thirteen million to make him the highest paid coach,
but they have sweetened the pot in this deal or
he gets tons more if he wins a national championship.
And so while you say, okay, yeah, that's great, like
who other coaches get that too, They've put even extra
like escalators in here and all this stuff. Like again,
(55:53):
his incentive is to I need to win a national champion. Yeah,
that's his incentive no matter what I mean, he wants
to be great. I'm not doubting that lang Kiff and
wants to be great, and.
Speaker 2 (56:02):
He has matured. Brian Kelly was fine not being great.
I mean, you can win at Tennessee he did, and
you can win at USC he didn't. And and then
now he's I don't know. That's like saying, well, that's
it's even harder now. It's even harder now. It is,
but had more advantages before than they do now.
Speaker 15 (56:18):
I'll give you a list for me the coaches who
were better than Lin Kiffin in college football right now.
Speaker 2 (56:23):
George Kirby, Steve Sarkisian, Mike Elko. I'm just kidding. Somebody
put Mike Elcho on their list. By the way, that's Signetti,
Ryan Day. You don't think Jerry still I'm being be
real though, I want you to be honest. What what
is What has lang Kiffin done that Kirky has not.
Speaker 15 (56:42):
He's he's had more consistency of of top of ten
win seasons.
Speaker 3 (56:46):
Signetti's Signette's going to a chick conference championship game? How
many conference championship games? Lingo too well?
Speaker 15 (56:52):
Because he tiebreakers? I mean, it's okay. Georgia and Alabama
asked me a question. I'm answering, had Auburn beat Alabama
the other night, he'd be in the SEC champions right now.
Speaker 2 (57:00):
So it's you know, it's he's right there. I just
don't think he is some wonder kid who is gonna
say he's fifty years old at all. He's mine? Is
he changed?
Speaker 4 (57:09):
Mine?
Speaker 2 (57:09):
Is good?
Speaker 1 (57:09):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (57:10):
I heard the same thing about Steve's Sarkisian. It's hard, baby.
I'm just saying, I'll have a gut feeling. Our chilling
looking better now? Are looking better? Well? Yeah, when they
were barely beating Kentucky, I'm.
Speaker 15 (57:20):
Just saying, you're showing up with the number one quarterback
in the country. Look what Lane just did with a
Farris State Division two quarterback in Trinidad Chamblas, Hey archet.
Speaker 2 (57:29):
Her shoulder or something.
Speaker 17 (57:30):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (57:31):
He was terrible. He's a lot better now, he's a
lot better. He was looking good against them. Aggie's baby.
All right, we're gonna take quick break. Seven one three
two one two five seven ninety is the phone number, Roger.
We see you on hold. We'll get to you. We
got gut feelings coming up at eleven thirty seven one
three two one two five seven ninety. It is the
Matt Thomas Show with Ross without Matt Thomas. What's you
till two? Alabama and South Florida moving.
Speaker 3 (57:56):
In their game next year to twenty thirty two. The
Crimston Tide has replaced USF with Shatan Nuga.
Speaker 2 (58:07):
Wait say again. USF and Alabama are supposed to play
next year. They moved the game to twenty thirty two,
and Alabama is replacing them with a Shaton Nuga.
Speaker 15 (58:15):
Yeah, because I think the message just being sent loud
and clear by this dumbass selection committee that they just
go to eleven and one or ten and two, you're
in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (58:26):
Doesn't matter. Who you played.
Speaker 15 (58:27):
So I think collectively everybody's going, why are we going
to challenge ourselves in the non conference?
Speaker 14 (58:32):
Is?
Speaker 2 (58:33):
Get it should be three cupcakes.
Speaker 15 (58:35):
And let's just coast because the committee has shown no again,
they need I've said this all along, they.
Speaker 2 (58:40):
Need to be more.
Speaker 15 (58:41):
If we're gonna have a stupid committee, they need to
be more like the college basketball committee where they look
at the whole resume, where we do quad one wins
and quad two wins. At a quad one loss, is
you get points for quad one loss.
Speaker 2 (58:55):
I would like some sort of computer element, like when
the bcs would have all computers, but some sort of
computer unbiased element, because I do think quite I'll tell
you right now, Longhorns get a benefit. They were number
one in the preseason poll, and it's like why they
get a benefit for the for the brand and the
press season. They are right or wrong, and I know
many will call it wrong. That's fine, but you bring
(59:17):
in these human biases and whatever it be, Michigan, Ohio
State or whatever, it's like, oh you know Michigan, Like
Alabama loses to Florida State, it's oh you poor baby.
But if some other team lost to a bad Florida
State team, it's like the worst thing that ever happened.
So you do have these human biases that I think
I think they should get, if not completely get rid of,
mitigate to where it isn't to where you do have
(59:40):
some kind of guidance, like when the selection committee uses
what you were talking about RPI or whatever kind of
well data, the net ratings and stuff.
Speaker 15 (59:47):
So they said, if we went back like we we
bitchally complained about the computers, and yet the computers, you
know what they're saying right now, they're giving tech. They're
putting Texas in because of their resume wins. That's what
it should be about. It should be about resume wins.
Everybody wants the hard point. You'll lost to Florida. You
know what nobody's saying about Alabama. You'll lost to Florida State. Yeah,
Alabama's loss is just as bad as the worst loss
(01:00:10):
of Texas. Texas has three top ten wins, better than
some of these other idiot teams were putting up there,
like Miami and Notre Dame that just.
Speaker 2 (01:00:19):
Get in because they're turning two, they should get in. Yeah,
it'll be interesting to see how it shakes out. I
would like to see Texas in for personal bias reasons,
and I quite frankly, I think they're one of the
ten best teams in the country. They just are. They've
got three top ten wins that I think that should
qualify you. But well, we'll see what happens. And I mean,
(01:00:40):
are we still gonna be talking about this? I guess
when it spans the sixteen it becomes lesser, right when
we're talking about the teams that when we're talking about
five and six not getting in, it's a huge deal.
It's a lesser deal when it's thirteen fourteen, and I
think it'll be even less if it's going to expand
to sixteen. Let's just be honest. There's just more money.
Speaker 15 (01:00:58):
There's too much money, and in all actually that you
should probably be going backwards to eight.
Speaker 2 (01:01:02):
It's I like twelve, but what I don't like the
automatic bits. I would say top take take the top
twelve in whatever order they happen to be in. Like
that's what I said last year.
Speaker 15 (01:01:12):
Boys says twelve best Teams' twelve best teams one through
twelve is the best Bois Day.
Speaker 3 (01:01:16):
It was about a top twelve last year, so they
are in their spot, you're in.
Speaker 2 (01:01:19):
You don't know automatic bits won't do that because it's
we gotta play fair.
Speaker 3 (01:01:23):
We got the conference, the little guy get in and
get their ass wamps.
Speaker 15 (01:01:27):
And my thing is if the conference champion of the
ACC has sucks and has four or five losses, you
don't deserve to get in.
Speaker 2 (01:01:33):
It doesn't matter if you're another champion.
Speaker 3 (01:01:35):
Yeah, if you're a four or five lost team and
you upset, upset somebody didn't happen last year it was
Clemson and somebody else SMU or whatever it was.
Speaker 2 (01:01:44):
Well, Duke is playing for the ACC title. Yeah, so
Duke could pull an upset. Yeah, you shouldn't get in
the playoffs.
Speaker 15 (01:01:50):
Not all conferences, not all schedules are created equal, Not
all conferences are created equal. There's there's a conference that
just sucks ass and this year that's the ACC.
Speaker 2 (01:01:58):
Top twelve teams, regardless of conference, regardless of affiliation, regardless
of championship, Top twenty.
Speaker 15 (01:02:04):
You know why they will do that because there's gonna
be yours where there's five or six SEC teams in
and they're gonna go that's not fair.
Speaker 2 (01:02:09):
Well, are they the best teams? Are they?
Speaker 17 (01:02:10):
Not?
Speaker 2 (01:02:11):
Right? Like it's subject it's not subjective. One through twelve
is one through twelve, seven one three, two, one two
five seven ninety is the phone number. We have got
feelings coming up momentarily. Roger is holding longest and holding patiently.
What's up, rochre.
Speaker 4 (01:02:25):
Yep I so man, hey, so just real quick on
the game last night. I get it. A lot of uh,
a lot of elements working the wrong way for us,
things that we excel in. Uh utah Jazz turned them
around on us and just use them against this. That's
kind of a weird bizarro world that happened yesterday. The
thing is, you know, uh, the games gain if you
(01:02:47):
wish you could see him gut out just because they're
so talented and you see him doing an interior team
like that, Yeah, kisses you off. Even though it's early
the season, I get okay, moving on to the section.
Uh yeah, man, this is the time where you know
you waiting for this. This is the most vulnerable movement
over time, vole time for the Chiefs ever be they
(01:03:07):
got a messed up offensive line. I mean you could
see I can already see my home stamping for his
life and doing those pump fakes and trying to get
us to you know, create penalties and stuff like that,
and I think that's you're gonna reach into that big
bag of tricks and at the risk of not getting
our tonsils tickles. I just really just like to see
us just you know, put the dagger in them and
(01:03:29):
then and make them go betty by for the season.
And uh, that's really as far as you see. You
don't want to You want to, you know, go to
go to the playoffs, don't lose three games, don't schedule
all the conference games, like Ohio.
Speaker 15 (01:03:43):
What about the wins though, Roger, That's that's the thing,
Like we keep the.
Speaker 4 (01:03:48):
Winds are great, the winds are favorable, the winds are awesome.
But because you are wrong Peter on going in or out?
It should have just I mean, what happened? What about
Ross you're in?
Speaker 2 (01:04:00):
What about Notre Dame you're in? What about Notre Dame?
Who's ten and two?
Speaker 15 (01:04:05):
Okay, Well that's what I'm saying. Ten and two has
played two good teams. They lost to both, but they
have no good wins. So that's what I say, Like
we have to talk about wins. Who are your good wins?
Texas has three remarkable wins.
Speaker 4 (01:04:17):
I I you're streaching to the quar It's just they
didn't do any favors doing out the Coffer schedules. Because
and you go right now and Texas, it's over with,
You're in.
Speaker 2 (01:04:26):
But that's stupid.
Speaker 15 (01:04:27):
Then you're telling me, had they played Rice week one
instead of Ohio State, they'd be in.
Speaker 2 (01:04:32):
So what again, like so we.
Speaker 15 (01:04:34):
You're not giving them credit for scheduling number one Ohio
State on the road.
Speaker 4 (01:04:40):
But it hurts them, it hurts But that's stupid.
Speaker 15 (01:04:42):
It shouldn't hurt them. Then then you're telling me we're
gonna get rid of all those good non conference Week
one games because it's it's coming back.
Speaker 2 (01:04:48):
To hurt you.
Speaker 4 (01:04:50):
I mean, I'm not the one. I'm not the one
judging it and doing all the Ready Texas and.
Speaker 15 (01:04:56):
Texas versus Charlotte, Sam Houston, maybe Sam Houston. We're going
to get more of those because you're telling me that
you can't give them the you can't in other words,
in the NCAA tournament, we do it.
Speaker 2 (01:05:06):
Oh you lost a duke? Who did you? Ah, just
lose to Tennessee. Come selection Sunday, they're.
Speaker 15 (01:05:11):
Gonna go, Hey, that was a good great win for Tennessee,
but a good loss for you. Of h We do
it in basketball. Why are we not doing football?
Speaker 4 (01:05:19):
Why are you asking me this? I don't know. I'll
just letting you know. Those schedule a hard auto conference exactly.
I want you all in the playoffs, y know. We
need the playoffs. You chieve money that come on?
Speaker 2 (01:05:33):
All right, all right, thank you, Roger, I appreciate it.
Speaker 15 (01:05:36):
We went to the Sesame Street of college football playoff committees.
Eleven news bigger than ten. Okay, so we're just if
you win your games, you get in.
Speaker 2 (01:05:44):
Oh that's man. We need a committee to do this.
We could just do this on a computer. You're as
an unbiased observer. You're making a lot of good points. Yes,
thank you. It's like I get paid to do this.
Speaker 15 (01:05:57):
I don't think they're gonna make it, no way, No
they're not. Because we have idiots. It's sitting in a
ballroom in Dallas. Hunter Yurchek, who got thrown into the mix.
Speaker 2 (01:06:09):
They need to bring computers back into the mix as well,
I think at some point. But whatever it is.
Speaker 15 (01:06:14):
What Hunter urcheck should be a vote for Texas. He
just watched his hogs get their ass beat by Texas
two weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (01:06:19):
That's true. I forgot he was there. He's the head
of the selection committee.
Speaker 3 (01:06:24):
Which coach did they? I forgot he was in Arkansas,
is what I'm saying. Which which coach did they hire?
Speaker 2 (01:06:30):
Who?
Speaker 15 (01:06:31):
Arkansas? The Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield? How were feeling about that?
They hated Arkansas. They were having a protest scheduled to
protest the hiring.
Speaker 2 (01:06:41):
I feel bad for the guy. Like what the Aggies
were doing with Mark Stoops.
Speaker 15 (01:06:45):
Yep, that worked for them. It did work for them,
Mike Elko, and now Mark Stoops gets fired in Kentucky.
Speaker 2 (01:06:50):
All right, we're gonna take quick break here on the
Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Chris Gordy is hanging out.
I got some gut feelings coming up about your Houston
Texans and the committee and college football and more. You
want to get in with your gut feelings, not necessarily
a hard line prediction, just suthing you feel in your
gut seven one three two one two five seven ninety
(01:07:13):
seven one three two one two five seven ninety will
review the gut feelings of last week as well and
get in your new predictions. We also have the News
at noon, coming up at twelve o'clock and your gut
Feelings next. It's seven one three two one two five
seven ninety. Listen up the balls I've been so appealing?
Speaker 3 (01:07:32):
Wasn't that tummen?
Speaker 2 (01:07:33):
You'll they got a gut feeling. This is their gut
feeling on the Matt Thomas Show. All right, let's go.
I gotta be honest.
Speaker 17 (01:07:50):
I think this is.
Speaker 2 (01:07:53):
Shortless one of my favorite segments of the week, Chonathan,
because we write down what we say and then we
get to come back and make fun of each other
or declare ourselves geniuses, and we don't really know anything
to these Okay, uh, you shouldn't feel that great reading
all the way in general. Not I just kinda say,
(01:08:13):
this week's not the best. Let me care for you,
all right, Gut feelings you want to get in seven
one three two one two five seven ninety is the
phone number. Seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
I'm stalling for Chris Gordy to come back because I
found a gut the last time he was on gut feelings. Jonathan,
When did you start working here?
Speaker 3 (01:08:30):
I started working starting working at Sports Talk seven ninety in.
Speaker 2 (01:08:34):
March, but in okay, part November, so you were here
for these. The Gordy made some gut feelings on April
fifteenth that I think are going to be funny to
go back and look at.
Speaker 3 (01:08:44):
So we'll bring those. I'm trying to stall till he
comes back. I don't know if he went to go.
Speaker 2 (01:08:48):
God knows what. He's very busy man. Yeah, he's a
busy man. I appreciate him making time for us here
on this show. So you want to get in, you
can seven one three two one two five, seven ninety.
You can also send me some tweets to at sports
RV if you'd like to get in that way. Also,
I would appreciate a follow on my Instagram at Sports
RV as well. We're trying to build that up, folks,
(01:09:08):
So go ahead and check that out. Fine, we'll go
ahead and review from last week, and then we will
go from there. Last week, let's see, hold on, I
screwed up on my document, Matt Thomas said, Jake Myers
will no longer be an astro by next week. That
is an l. Jake Myers is still an astro, but
I think he's gonna be do Yeah. Apparently Ken Rosenthal
(01:09:31):
has talked about him being linked with maybe the Diamondbacks
or some other I can't remember who the what the
other team was, but Ken Rosenthal is floating out about
Jake Myers being available in trade. Ken Rosenthal has been
all right along with Chandler Rome on a lot of
Astro stuff, so people in the athletic generally very in
tune with what's going on with the Astros. And also
(01:09:56):
floating out that he's involved in a couple of places,
maybe drumming ups a market. Who knows. I don't know,
but Jake Myers could be traded, but he was not
traded this week. So that's an L for matt Thomas.
He says the Cougars beat Baylor by ten plus. They won,
but I don't think it was by ten plus? Was
(01:10:17):
it the I don't know because I'm not I was
out of town. I'm gonna use that excuse, and I'm
not that in tune in Big Toyota. It was thirty
one twenty four, thirty one twenty four, okay, so one score,
not by tens. That's another L for matthew.
Speaker 3 (01:10:33):
He said the Chiefs would beat the Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day.
Speaker 2 (01:10:36):
Jonathan go ahead. How did that go?
Speaker 3 (01:10:38):
Probably should have won that game, you know what, just
to say, I want eighty five dollars rooting against the chief.
Speaker 2 (01:10:46):
All right, that's big money, let's go. He also had
Jonathan Taylor under one hundred yards against the Texans. That's
a win. And then he would see. He said Justin
Verlander will be a Houston astro. I think he piggyback.
I think guy said that and then he piggyback me.
But that's okay, So a lot of l's there. I
said the Texans would pull.
Speaker 3 (01:11:04):
The upset against the Indianapolis.
Speaker 2 (01:11:07):
Colts, and they did.
Speaker 3 (01:11:11):
I also said, well, give me another one, because here
it comes.
Speaker 2 (01:11:14):
I said that Texas long orange would up set the Aggies,
and they did. I said the Texans would win twenty
six to twenty two. They won twenty to sixteen. I
also said Justin Verlin will be an asher. We'll see.
I also said Wednesday night against the Warriors, there will
be a flagrant review for Draymond Green. I should have
(01:11:35):
put Draymond Green or Men Thompson, because I think there
was an Amen Thompson review, but not a Draymond Green one.
Speaker 15 (01:11:40):
Did you see the commercial that uh dropped Draymond's it's
like Santa Claus.
Speaker 2 (01:11:45):
Was he like elbowing people? No, he like tells sorry, Draymond,
not this year. Funny. No, I didn't see that. It's
on the naughty list. Oh okay, I thought it was
Draymond as Santa and he's drop kicking kids. That would
be more accurate. All right. Anyways, John, then you said
arch Manning would throw two picks. Guess what stuck up?
You know, I'll get zero. But he was nice, he lived. Yeah.
(01:12:09):
Now he chucked the ball fifty yards down the field
like a hundred times. That's something I would like to
get coached out of him. He he he. He throws
it downfield when there's wide open guys down underneath. But anyways,
you also said the Aggies would win go ahead, yeah.
Speaker 6 (01:12:24):
Yeah, gut oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:12:28):
Oh you took in Austin. I'm going to talk to
you out of that one. That was troll. I told
you it was my lock of the week Colts and
the long ones. I got him on a two game
Polay money line. Oh it was great. I would say
the twenty twenty two Alabama game was louder because I
(01:12:49):
don't know why it was, Maybe just because it was
it was so close the whole time. That was close
and they lost that game. Will Anderson Jr. Came Quinn
Yours got hurt in that game. He got cheap shot.
One of them they come in now, I'm upset was
the quarterback that came out. We're sweating in that game.
It was it was hot, all right. I think maybe
(01:13:11):
arch Manning throws two picks Acus. But you also had
the Chiefs losing to the Cowboys. Oh good job, nice
victory there, Jonathan. All Right, So Chris Gordy, I have
your gut feelings. The last time I have you registered
on gut feelings was April fifteenth of this year. It's
not bad. You had Warriors winning one of the first
two games versus the Rockets, which I believe they did,
(01:13:34):
so we're going back to playoff times. And you also
had the NFL Draft. You had the Titans trading out
of the number one pick. Oh wow, they took cam Ward.
And this is an interesting one. How you feeling? You
said cam Ward will be a bust relative to the
number one overall selection. I stand by that one. Okay's
(01:13:55):
had some good throws this year. But I mean that team,
I mean, if we're keeping it a buck, that team
is badass, all right, So TBD on that one, all right.
Gut feelings this week, Chris Gord to the floor is yours, man.
I will go with the gut feeling.
Speaker 15 (01:14:14):
As much as I want to see my guy Diego
Pavia win the Heisman, I will say the winner of
the Big Ten Championship this weekend will be the Heisman
Trophy winner, whether it's Julian Saying on the Ohio State
side or for Nando Mendoza on the Indiana Because here's
the tough part about conference championship weekend. It's the teams
(01:14:36):
that aren't playing. And by the way, went to the
same thing a couple of years ago. Jayden Daniels had
such a phenomenal season in LSU, but he was sitting
idle this weekend. And I forget who was Alabama, Georgia.
There were some other guys in the running, but I
think Alabama was so bad, Like, like whoever was in
the running that weekend were so bad.
Speaker 2 (01:14:54):
Oh Bo Nicks, he was at Oregon. He looks so bad.
Speaker 15 (01:14:58):
That they're like, eh, you know what, I think it's
still Jadon Daniels. But I feel like this Big ten
championship because it's one versus two, saying versus Mendoza. Whoever wins,
as long as they don't completely crap the bed. I
think the winner of that game is going to now
be the highs.
Speaker 2 (01:15:12):
Of yeah, two good defenses. Well maybe maybe it could
be a low scoring affair. Total is forty eight and
a half just kind of low for a college football game.
All right, Johnathan, you got a gut feeling. I want
to say, whoser's upset? Ooh, the buck Eyes and the
big Tent upset the Ohio State luck Eyes. Okay, I
(01:15:33):
like that. I just had the spread. I just had
that game open. Let me go back. I don't know
what the spread is in that game four and a
half Ohio State, so that wouldn't be the biggest upset ever.
I will go with Georgia easily covers the two and
a half against Alabama. What's up? Say they again? Georgia
(01:15:57):
covers the two point five versus Bama easily easily? Yeah?
By like I'm not I say easily, like it's three,
Like they win by seven, you know something like that,
seven to ten.
Speaker 15 (01:16:08):
Do you know what their record is Kirby's record against Alabama,
though he's like one in eight.
Speaker 2 (01:16:13):
Yeah, how many of those losses were against a guy
named Nick Saban? Okay, but he's zero and two against
the boor he lost this year and last year. I believe.
I believe they're gonna corry it. It's just something.
Speaker 15 (01:16:22):
About that Crimson. When Kirby smart sees that Crimson on
the other side, he starts, Oh my god, no, he's ready,
he's ready to come here. You heard it here first
George is able to get the job done Texas Tech.
That's too easy. Who cares Duke West Duke in Virginia.
I'm gonna be honest.
Speaker 2 (01:16:41):
My gut feeling is fluctuating on the Texans, So I
want to hold off on that. I want to say
they're gonna go up there and pull up the pull
off the upset. You know what, you know what, Texans
pull off the upset Sunday night at our own head.
Oh god, that sounds so stupid. Texans pull off the upset.
Cheess aren't that? Guys? Come Ross, Matt, you guys, you two.
(01:17:04):
The fear of mahoons.
Speaker 3 (01:17:06):
Chiefs are normal, Okay, a normal average Sunday night at
Arrowhead Stadium against Pat Mahomes, Andy Reid and the Chiefs.
Speaker 2 (01:17:17):
With this offensive line against that Chiefs offensive line, Steve
Spagnolo murders Detexans. That's the only thing that's giving me pause.
All Right, I'm gonna go with it. They pull off
the upset, all right, and then one more. You're not
gonna like this. Gordy lane Kiffin leaves l s U
(01:17:46):
in unfavorable circumstances within four years. So he leaves on
his own like he's not fired. I'm saying unfavorable fire
to be unfavorable, like quitting and leaving to the NFL,
and like, I don't know, that's unfair.
Speaker 15 (01:18:03):
And he could also be successfully for the NFL, So
it's that's what I'm saying, unfavorable. But as the NFL
interested him, if he's failing.
Speaker 2 (01:18:11):
I don't know. Al Davis was interested him and he
hadn't done Jack, but that was Al Davis who was
senile at the time. I'm just saying, I just got
I just got a gut feeling. It sas just a
gut feeling. This ain't gonna end right. Within four years.
Lane Kiffin leaves LSU in unfavorable circumstances. I don't know
(01:18:33):
if that. I mean n Cualea doesn't care about anything.
Are they infracting anything these days?
Speaker 15 (01:18:36):
I just after his rehabilitation with Nick Saban at Alabama.
Speaker 2 (01:18:40):
He has been sober for five years.
Speaker 15 (01:18:42):
Well, but I'm saying, like his football rehabilitation where he
brought an influx of great offense. Remember when he when
Sabin hired him, Like, this is so out of the
box for Saban, what is he thinking?
Speaker 2 (01:18:52):
They're they're oil and water?
Speaker 15 (01:18:54):
But it was when the game changed and he burned
a top offense to Alabama and they won championships with it.
And then he went to f what f AU won
two conference, huge conference championships, gotten Ole Miss and it's
been up, up and up every year. I just don't
see how he's just gonna suddenly fall flat on his face.
I think he could stay stable and they'll be not
(01:19:15):
a season.
Speaker 2 (01:19:16):
I'm not saying he's going five and five and seven, Okay,
but Brian Kelly went what ten wins, ten wins, nine wins,
five and three and got fired right? No, it was, uh,
it was less than by the way we got.
Speaker 15 (01:19:30):
Something we have to stop doing is counting the Bowl
win as a tenth win because you go nine.
Speaker 2 (01:19:35):
And three, Ki been talking about him winning ten games.
Speaker 15 (01:19:39):
Oh, those are regular season wins right right now, right now,
he is I'm abound before.
Speaker 2 (01:19:45):
Let's see ten and four, Brian Kelly, ten and three,
Brian Kelly nine and four, five and three fired.
Speaker 3 (01:19:53):
Man.
Speaker 15 (01:19:54):
And in those years you had the worst defense you've
ever had in the history of Lu's tough. You had
a Hesman Trophy winner combined with the worst defense you've
ever had in the history of the school.
Speaker 2 (01:20:03):
And you're gonna be going up against Bama Georgia. And
then this year, this year, and this year you came
in preseason what was LSU top five? Last year they
won ten games thanks to a Bowl win, did ole miss?
The year before they did win eleven games? And this
year they have won eleven games. So do you think
Brian Kelly was unjustly fired? Then? Didn't making out that
(01:20:26):
wasn't around the state? Now if he was an a
hole and he was treating everybody poorly and nobody liked him, well,
it wasn't just that, like I said, it was I
to expectations.
Speaker 15 (01:20:36):
If the the expectation he was saying championship. He said
after their bowl win, save those receipts were coming for
the championship, and it's like, okay, bro.
Speaker 2 (01:20:44):
Yeah, well they can't make those expectators. School didn't make
a championship trophy for your coach. That's what A and
M did with Jimbo. That's why I admire Hugh Freeze.
What was he saying at at his golf turb over summer.
He goes, Yeah, everybody knows the goal at Auburts to
make a Bowl game. They're like, wait a minute, excuse me,
what you moved? The gold host like, I love that.
I'm like, that's great on the golf course, Hugh Freeze,
(01:21:06):
you know say I love if Sark would do that. Sark, good,
look next year the goals to make a bowl game.
You know you can come to me in four years.
A gut feeling. I just got a gut feeling. I
can be wrong. I'm wrong with the gut feelings all
the time. You know what put me down for a
gut feeling. Oh here we got Sark has gone in
the next four years because he fails to make the
(01:21:26):
playoffs the next two years. That could happen.
Speaker 3 (01:21:29):
I'm telling you. They're churning out these coaches every two years.
Speaker 2 (01:21:33):
The hot name. Brian Kelly's the hottest coach, and he's gone.
James Franklin, great hot coach, Semi finals in the playoffs
and he's gone. They are the carousel is spinning faster
and faster and faster. It is building momentum. And if
Sark has gone in four years, I'm gonna tell you
right now, that would not shock me. I'm just saying
(01:21:53):
I got a bad feeling about this. All right, We're
gonna take a break. You got a gut feeling you
can still get it. Seven one three two one two
five seven ninety is the phone number. Seven one three
two one two five seven ninety. Rosby, Aria, Chris Gordy,
Jonathan Allen with you more gut feelings if you'd like
coming up in just a second.
Speaker 18 (01:22:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:22:15):
Coaching genius Joey McGuire on The Pat McAfee Show. Right now,
I almost went with a uh. I like that team, man,
like I almost want to go with a lot in
Texas Tech makes the Semis. They can't make the final four.
I don't know if they get past that, but it's
(01:22:35):
just funny to me that's like, Joe McGuire, who's this guy?
And then they spend fifty million dollars on nil all
of a sudden, well, he's the coach of a top
five team.
Speaker 15 (01:22:42):
A couple of years ago he was here and he
did the coaches thing with what Keith Neil Farmer and
those guys and right down the road here and he
I remember his quote that day. They were like because
all the defense was so bad, and he was like, guys,
I'm telling you right now, we're spending a crap ton
of money on defense. So it's gonna it's gonna be
(01:23:03):
it's gonna get better. Trust me how much?
Speaker 2 (01:23:06):
And this is just a conversation I guess we will
never get the true answers to. We can kind of
just debate this how much is it going to matter
who the coach is? Because as I just said, I
was making a joke. Joey McGuire, nobody thought of him
as this like hot, super great, awesome coach, and then
(01:23:29):
you get an effusion of a bunch of a bunch
of great talent for the Texas Tech Red Raiders, and
all of a sudden he's a top five team. Last
year people wanted Mike Elko fired. And actually this last week,
if you look at some of the some of the
I love that you like that Twitter account message board geniuses.
Those guys are hilarious. Yeah, like there are Aggie's fans
(01:23:50):
who want Mike Elko fired right now. After that line,
Let's be careful, there were people on there a week
ago saying they wanted sarkfired. So yeah, absolutely people wanting sarkfired.
I'm not seeing I'm not trying to throw stones. I'm
saying this is everywhere. This coaching ecosystem makes me laugh
or not much.
Speaker 15 (01:24:06):
But they were like, I think those boosters are going
to push them to take the Titans job.
Speaker 2 (01:24:10):
And you know what if he does whatever. The point
that I'm making is that it's like if you get
a coach of some level of competency and you were
bringing this up talking about at Ozeron winning a championship
and less Miles winning a championship, I mean, especially at
the college level, I'll even throw we'll go long horn.
Well again, Mac Brown won some coaching genius. Brown didn't
(01:24:34):
reinvent the wheel. Offensively, He got a dude named Vince Young,
five NFL caliber offensive lineman, and some pretty good running
backs and then a defense that was littered with NFL
players and they won a championship. So I think to me,
as long as you have a coach of a certain
level of competency, you need players, and you need some
(01:24:58):
good luck too. I mean, you gotta get lucky in
some of these games where you're down, it's not your day,
and you come back. Longhorns. I know, Longhorns got yelled
at me yesterday, like they got lucky in that Mississippi
State game. I don't know how you could watch that
and not say that they didn't. But Aggie's got lucky
in the South Carolina game. We can point to Georgia
almost lost to Florida. Like, you need some luck, You
(01:25:20):
need some great players, and you need a mix of
some good coaching as well. The question is how important
is that mix in a year's past to where you
can infuse your roster with a bunch of talent just
by laying down a bunch of cash.
Speaker 15 (01:25:35):
That's what I just don't know the answer to. But
I'm just thinking out can I tell you this. I
had somebody tell me that apparently one of the discussions
Lane Kiffin had on the decision to go to LSU
is that there is a thought with a lot of
coaches behind the scenes that I don't know if you
follow this whole legal battle going to DC and all
but the Score Act and all this other craph is
(01:25:56):
they think we're they're gonna hard cap all this stuff
and bring it all back down. So the blue Bloods
are going to go back to being the blue bloods,
and the Texas Texts and these little ones that have
had this huge influx of money, they're gonna go, WHOA,
can't do that anymore.
Speaker 2 (01:26:09):
There's no way you can hard cat. No, that's I
don't feel like that can stand. That's not constant.
Speaker 15 (01:26:13):
They were saying, now that we're doing the revenue share,
collectives have to go bye bye. You can't have these
groups raising money.
Speaker 2 (01:26:20):
That doesn't seen constitutional at all for the for the
right Timeberville's or the big ones fighting for this. Yeah,
well that again the kids getting millions. But I mean
they just keep taking l's in the in Supreme Court,
and I think that would be another l How can
you cap on a young uh, the these young men
and women who are it's not the players, it's just
(01:26:41):
counting the total.
Speaker 15 (01:26:42):
You can spend so right now Texas Tech, but they
made headlines because they had the million dollars softball pitcher.
Speaker 2 (01:26:47):
Happing the spin is tapping the players.
Speaker 15 (01:26:49):
But but in other words, just capping the total what
the school can can get spend, right.
Speaker 2 (01:26:54):
But then that's also that caps the players, because I mean,
that's why the baseball players don't want a salary cap,
because it caps what they can make.
Speaker 15 (01:27:00):
They're cann argue, you can put your quarterback up to
twenty five million.
Speaker 2 (01:27:03):
We don't care. It's just you only get twenty five million.
That just doesn't seem like that's going to hold any
water in court long term. Or there's a lot of
people I'll put it this way. I'll put it this way.
It doesn't seem like it should hold water in court
long term. You never know.
Speaker 15 (01:27:16):
Let me say this, a lot of the coaches are
pushing for it, the Kirby smarts, a lot of these
guys they won't because it's the wild wide West out there.
Speaker 2 (01:27:23):
Yeah, but I mean, this is just a problem that
this is all coming to a head. That's been a
problem for years ever since. It basically should have turned
professional when they got the infusion of TV money, which
was like the nineteen eighties. But but back to my
point about like coaches, like, weren't there people that wanted
Ryan Day fired after they lost to Michigan last year
before the playoff even started? And now and now he's
(01:27:45):
won a national championship and they're twelve and oh and
he's a God's gift to coaching. It's it's just funny
to me how quickly the can turn finally beat Michigan.
He won a national chanck. Yes, yeah, that works. But
people wanted him fired before he even got that opportunity. Yeah,
is what I'm saying. All Right, Uh, Gary in spring,
I see you on hold. We're gonna get to the
(01:28:06):
news at noon. We'll get to you, I promise. Jonathan
Allen is here, Chris Gordy is here, Matt Thomas is out.
There are two hours in the books of the Matt
Thomas Show with Ross. You guys can still get in.
Phone lines are open. And it's been some interesting college
football discussions. I mean, the ecosystem is just insane right now.
You guys want to talk about that. We also have
been talking about the Texans game coming up against Chiefs
(01:28:26):
on Sunday night. Rockets lose last night to the Utah Jazz.
It'll all be a part of the News at Noon
coming up next here on The Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Here on Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 1 (01:28:36):
Ninety's The Matt Thomas Show with.
Speaker 21 (01:28:39):
Ross twelve oh two in Age Town, Hour number three
of The Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 2 (01:28:55):
Matt Thomas is out traveling with the Houston Rockets. Or
I think he's already back. Maybe he's sleep in. Maybe
say he's enjoying a delicious no, never mind a disgusting
Mick rib I don't know. And the main time Jonathan
Allen is here. Chris Gordy is ducking out. He has
to do some program director duty, so we will have
Jonathan Allen bring us the News at noon. A lot
(01:29:21):
of stuff going on for a Tuesday in the middle
of December, so this is uh, there should be an
enthralling edition of the News at Noon by one Jonathan Allen.
What do we have all the news?
Speaker 3 (01:29:31):
Uh, let's start off with Monday night football, right, I mean,
Patriots dominate the Giants.
Speaker 2 (01:29:37):
Everybody would think so, but I'm sad.
Speaker 3 (01:29:39):
But the main thing I guess everybody's talking about is
how Jackson Dart got lit up on going to the sideline,
like you know how mahomes try to do that, that
sticky stuff, you know, Yeah, and quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (01:29:49):
Getting protected, Patriots a.
Speaker 3 (01:29:51):
Land that's live, and Jackson Dart, I think he's in.
I think he's a sadist. I think he's in the pain.
It's almost like he slows up for these big hits. Yeah,
hit me baby one more time.
Speaker 2 (01:30:02):
Him in Skataboo are like same cloth. You get what
I'm saying. So, yeah, he had.
Speaker 3 (01:30:06):
This is saying after everybody was questioning and telling him
he needs to protect himself, after coming up with concussion protocols, like.
Speaker 2 (01:30:12):
I'm gonna keep playing aggressive.
Speaker 5 (01:30:14):
No, hopefully everybody can take a second to watch my
tape going back to high school and realize that this
is not a shock. Like I play the game aggressively.
I took one hit that people are talking about. I
slid got.
Speaker 15 (01:30:28):
Out of the way.
Speaker 2 (01:30:28):
I have a lot of hits.
Speaker 5 (01:30:29):
So I appreciate people, you know, wanting to you know,
me to be healthy and all that stuff, and I
want to be healthy too. But I play this game aggressive,
so I'm not I'm not gonna just change how I
play the game.
Speaker 3 (01:30:43):
Now you can said this earlier, Ross, but that's just that,
and I'm young, I'm run the same exam, and I
know that's just that's arrogant speaking like that's.
Speaker 2 (01:30:51):
Just just something stupid. What are you thinking, Jackson Dart?
I know nobody likes to be criticized, and then it
can be tough, especially when you're young and you're you're hot,
you know what, and you're drafted in the first round
and you've been lighting the world on fire, and you're
in New York and you've been the toast of the town.
(01:31:11):
But let's wake up, literally out of this brain fog
that you have. Look at my high school tape. We
looked it up earlier. What was it Draper Utah or something?
He played in the middle of who's the greatest Utah
high school football player you've ever heard of?
Speaker 3 (01:31:25):
It's Jackson Dart. I don't know who else. Probably we
can come up with a list mountains playing.
Speaker 2 (01:31:31):
Yeah, but my gosh, even if you're in Texas or California, Florida,
whatever you want to call these high school hotbeds, look
at my check out my high school tape. Yeah, you're not.
You're playing up against a bunch of insurance salesmen and
dropouts and construction workers, not NFL players. You're the highest
(01:31:51):
level of football, Jackson Dart. You cannot say check my
high school tape. I've been I'm not new to this.
I'm true to this. You're gonna get true to these
concussion and brain damage if you keep doing this and
being so defiant and arrogant about it. I mean, my gosh,
I guess it shouldn't be surprising, but I mean, I'm
(01:32:11):
not gonna really I'm not gonna say I want him
to get hurt, Jonathan, but he's I mean, it's players
like that. You kind of happen at the bar and
there's a guy and he's talking a bunch of mess
to everybody, and you're like, I wish somebody would just
knock that dude out. It's starting to feel a little
bit like that. I don't want Jackson Dart to get
(01:32:31):
a brain injury and get in there. I don't want
to get him hospitalized. But if he wants to keep
flying off the sidelines like a rag doll, that's not
going to be a problem for me. What else is
in the news at noon, Jonathan.
Speaker 3 (01:32:44):
I'm moving on, of course, we've got to visit the
devastating loss from the Rockets.
Speaker 2 (01:32:49):
Oh that's not what I was waking up. I wanted
to know. But waking up, you mean you watched the
game listening here on seven ninety and caught the Rockets
rap with melast Night.
Speaker 3 (01:33:00):
Right, guys, I was watching the Patriots. Now, I'm be honest,
I'm in the football. Is the season right now? I
thought I thought it was the vibe.
Speaker 2 (01:33:07):
You know, Well next time it wasn't. They lost. They
could have used your energy. Yeah, but you know, yeah
one thirty.
Speaker 22 (01:33:13):
Marketing gatters in backcourt, down to five seconds left to go,
gets across bigcourt. I mean, Houston will go three to
one in this Western Swing. They fall tonight here in
Salt Lake City. The final score the Jazz won thirty three,
The Rockets won twenty five.
Speaker 2 (01:33:29):
One thirty three to one twenty five. Rockets lose to
the Utah Jazz. They only shot twenty nine percent from three.
The Utah Jazz shot forty percent from three. Lourie Marketing
was going off, Keyante George was going off. Rockets defense
looked lethargic and just out of sorts. They were getting
crushed on dribbled drives, collapsing and just giving up threes
(01:33:52):
at the end as well. They rallied furiously, They bought it,
brought it to within one. They scored thirty I think
six points in the four fourth quarter. Only problem was
Utah Jazz scored thirty five points in the fourth quarter.
So you brought the offense in the fourth, did not
bring the defense. Kevin Durant doing all that he could.
Rockets with their worst loss of the season. And as
(01:34:17):
I said earlier in the show, even the worst teams
in the NBA are pretty talented. Like you said, Nurkicic good,
he had eighteen and nine. Laur Market has been an
All star, Kiante George's averaging twenty plus. You got a
high lottery pick in Ace Bailey who was knocking down shots.
Every team in the NBA is talented and can get
you on any given night. Unfortunately, that happened to the
(01:34:41):
Houston Rockets last night in Utah. They'll be licking their
wounds and looking to bounce back against Sacramento Kings coming
up tomorrow. Here on Sports Talk seven ninety, Jonathan Allen,
what else is going on? Oh O, who's that news?
Speaker 3 (01:34:53):
I mean, it's been the main topic all throughout today.
I mean Lane Kiffin and just the college football scene
as a whole in all these co seeing contracts and
as Gorya was just bringing up them, trying to go
to the Supreme Court and all this to try to
get the tap on instable A and I l land
Cape is still the top of the story.
Speaker 23 (01:35:11):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:35:11):
He does go into LSU and making these remarks that
he said, and I have at audio clip right now.
Speaker 24 (01:35:15):
Okay, great, I'm never going to make a decision on money.
And I'm telling you right now, I don't know what
my contract is here. That's not very financially responsible.
Speaker 2 (01:35:26):
Okay, I'm sure it's really good.
Speaker 24 (01:35:29):
Okay, I don't know what it is, nor did I
know what the other places what the numbers were, because
I said in the beginning, I told Jimmy Sexton, don't
tell me the numbers. Okay, I want to make a
decision that has nothing to do with money for me.
Now tell me the numbers and the plan for what
(01:35:49):
the money is for the players. I'm never going to
make a decision.
Speaker 3 (01:35:53):
All right, Ross you comment, do you even I didn't
even listen to this before I played it. And out
there now, I'm kind of stunned, like I don't know
what the contract terms are.
Speaker 2 (01:36:07):
I told Jimmy, section don't tell me what the money is.
It doesn't matter. I have no idea how much money
I'm making. You can try to make your point and
you can say, you know what, at the end of
the day, the money is good everywhere, and I am
going where I want to succeed and where I want
(01:36:29):
to live. And I would rather live in Baton Rouge,
Louisiana and get some good gumbo rather than go and
live in Oxford, Mississippi, and I don't even know what
they're supposed to eat over there. It's a remore fertile
recruiting base. There's more history and you can win, and
it's a better place to live. And it's more money
(01:36:49):
probably as well, I mean, certainly more money than he
was making an Ole, miss before. I don't know what
the new contract. Apparently they were very close, if not
close to identical. But to go out there and say
I don't know what my contract is con genuine like,
do you? I mean there's zero percent, zero point zero
percent chance he did not look at his car. You
(01:37:10):
gotta sign it. You gotta go to the docu sign.
There's a sex just signed it for him. He's going
to the docu sign and he's covering up his his
screen when it says what the terms of the contract are?
Hell no, that would be irresponsible. Now, I imagine if
he has money already, you can have one trust in
Jimmy Sexton that he's gonna get you the best, the
(01:37:31):
best contract, and the most amount of money possible. But
I mean, this is just insane for that to come
out of your mouth. You're ever telling a story with
your friends, Jonathan, and you gotta you throw a little
white law, a little exaggeration in there, and then you
go a little bit too far. Maybe you've had a
couple of cocktails or a couple of beers and you're like, man,
and then and then he got up in my face
(01:37:53):
and you're like, no, he didn't get in my face.
I kind of made that up. Put it. But they're
running with it. But then you're like, maybe I'm losing them.
I don't know if they believe that one. This was
a little too far. That's what Lane Kiffin just did.
He's telling a story, he got all riled up. He's
having a good time in this press conference telling all
these white lies about how let's use the greatest and
sliced bread, and he took it a little bit too far.
(01:38:14):
That's what happened with Lane Kiffin right there. I mean, no,
there's not a person on the planet that believes Lane Kiffin.
I put a pull up on my Twitter account lane Kiffin.
I don't know what contract is here, believe him or not? Well,
so far one hundred percent of the responses are not.
Chris Cordy, go ahead and go ahead and vote believe
(01:38:34):
it on there? All right? Anything else on the news
at noon, mister Allen, that's Jak's news and noon today, guys.
I appreciate that. I'm Jk's news, and we do appreciate
you for having us. Jonathan all right, you want to
react to any of that, That's what we've been talking
about today. I mean, we got for a Tuesday at
the beginning of December, after a holiday, We got a
lot of sports topics to get to. Haven't even mentioned
(01:38:57):
Jake Myers being floated in at trade rumors. You guys
can get to that. We were talking about Lane Kiffin
at LSU. My gut feeling is that within four years.
There will just be unfavorable circumstances and Lane Kiffen will
not work out at LSU. You think I'm crazy? How
we feeling about the Houston Texans. They beat the Cult
(01:39:18):
and the Bills in back to back weeks. Are they
AFC contenders or are they AFC pre tenders? And of
course we mentioned the Rockets losing last night to the
Utah Jazz. Anything you guys want to bring to the
table right now, Chris Gordy is out, so you want
to come co host for a couple of minutes hang
out with me. Let's do it. Seven to one three
two one two five seven ninety is the phone number
seven one three two one two five seven ninety. It
(01:39:41):
is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross without Matt Thomas
with you until two o'clock here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
I'm curious to see how far this goes. I put
up a poll on my Twitter her account at sports
(01:40:03):
r V Lane Kiffin, I don't know what my contract
is here at LSU. Believe it or not? How long
can it stay at one not? You're at twenty eight
or twenty seven votes of not without a single person
dropping a believe it. Maybe the say I can get
(01:40:23):
into LSU circles at some point. So yeah, if you
want to go ahead and vote on that, you can
do so on my Twitter account at sports r V.
Well as you weab back with you here on the
Matt Thomas Show with Ross without Matt Thomas. He is
traveling with your Houston Rockets. They lost last night to
the Utah Jazz. You guys can get in. I am
flying solo for and it might be the rest of
(01:40:46):
the show, So if you want to get in, you
can seven one three two one two five seventh ninety
seven one three two one two five seven ninety. We
have a lot of stuff to talk about as we
go along. We have been talking about this Lane Kiffin's
We got the text and stuff later on coming up
in about thirty minutes. I do want to talk about
there was a slippery slope that everyone could see and
(01:41:09):
it's come to fruition in the NFL and I am disappointed.
We'll talk about that coming up in thirty minutes. But
we have been talking about this Holy and Kiffin situation.
What's going on with these college coaches and this money
that they continue to make and these in these contracts
and these expectations that are held basically everywhere. And I
(01:41:30):
don't know necessarily that there's a solution. This is just
something that is very interesting to kind of watch unfold.
That has come to my attention was bringing it up
with Chris Gordy a couple of segments ago that when
Ohio State last year lost to Michigan yet again, like
there were articles being written calling for the firing of
(01:41:54):
Ryan Day. Where the Ohio State Buckeyes finished as this
sixth seed in the playoff. If we're a fourteen playoff,
did they get jumped by two teams or just one?
I think it was just one with Ohio State, I
mean with the with the Boys, I think it was
Boise State made the top four. I think the Buckeyes
would have been on the outside looking in last year
(01:42:14):
and they lost to they lost to was it Michigan
and then also Oregon in the Big in the Big
Ten championship game, which would have been if it weren't
for a twelve team playoff, we could have been in
a scenario or Ryan Day would have been fired. He
went on. He goes on to win the national championship.
(01:42:37):
He's twelve and zero this year and all of a sudden,
Ryan Day, most genius coach in history. And I brought
this up to you, Johnathan, I think about a week
or two ago. Whenever it was that they like Mac
Brown went one in ten his first two years at
North Carolina the first stint in the nineteen nineties before
rounding them into shape and being very good at Texas
(01:43:01):
and then oh, by the way, getting let go at
eight and five at Texas despite being I mean one
of the greatest coaches in the program's history. Everybody's got
these expectations and everybody cannot win at all times, and
it's getting worse and worse and worse because of all
this nil money. And I understand, like, if I'm a
(01:43:21):
million dollar booster and I am donating all this cash
and I'm paying for these players, and I don't know
if they're going to pan out, and you're the coach,
you have to trust the coach, Right, it's some million
dollar booster who's in a private jet, who lives in
their mansion. Are they out there scouting high school tape
and they know who the five star players are? Whatever? No,
they can flip on into to on three or twenty
(01:43:44):
four to seven sports and get some somewhat of an idea,
but they don't really know. They're like, you're trusting in
this coach, and when these things don't work out and
it's costing you millions of dollars, you are breaking trust
with the coaches. So I understand that, but it's everywhere,
(01:44:05):
and it's unrealistic as a collective for Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama, Texas,
A and m Texas, Oklahoma, Miami, whoever, Elm, Michigan, and
you add it up, and it's like fifteen boost, you know,
and then you're getting new guys in the end of
the middle, in the end of the Vanderbilts, like they
(01:44:26):
all want to win.
Speaker 3 (01:44:27):
I mean to your point, I mean, and they're still
going to bring in that revenue, that money to the
stadium and get people the tickets sold, you know, especially
if they're like how Ryan Day dropped that game. They
were still a playoff team, they were still going to
do what they needed to do, and it's still you know,
so I guess firing these coaches that help you build
your brand name isn't really gonna get you anywhere. But
(01:44:48):
like you said, a repeating cycle over and over and
over again.
Speaker 2 (01:44:51):
Yeah, it's just yeah, well I'm trying to pull it
up from last year. Yeah, Ohio stated lost to Oregon
early in the year, not the Big twelve, not the
Big Chin champion ship game, and then the end of
the season with a thirteen to ten loss to Michigan.
They had lost to Michigan, like Ryan Day had I
only get had beaten them, or he's like one in
five against them or whatever it was. It's just crazy
(01:45:12):
the expectation and it I'm just kind of curious to
watch it all on fold because you have you have
so many different things going on right now in college football,
like where is the future of this? And we don't
talk about it on Saturdays. I was at DKR on
Friday screaming my lungs out. I've lost a little bit
of my voice right now, And I wasn't thinking about
nil or when coach Sark is going or if he's
(01:45:33):
going to the NFL or whatever. It's just beat the team,
the number three team of the country. You still have
a very very outside slight shot at the playoff. Beat
the team that is on your field and also happens
to be your rival as well, like win the game.
That's all I was focused on. That's all everybody's focused
on when these games start.
Speaker 1 (01:45:51):
But the the.
Speaker 2 (01:45:54):
Ecosystem is what I'll keep using.
Speaker 3 (01:45:56):
When it's coaches, when it's roster construction, when it's when
it's I mean senators and and everybody else getting involved
in the government getting involved in trying to regulate all this.
Speaker 2 (01:46:09):
It's just gone haywire what college football, and it's getting
It's only going to get worse, I think before it
gets better. And I don't know what the solution is.
The only real solution is at some point for them
to say, hey, this is an NFL minor league system.
You get I don't even know these guys are professional players,
and then you go from there. But the NC DOUBLEA
is grasping at what they have left, clutching to to
(01:46:33):
to whatever threads of their control that they used to have,
because it all boils down to money.
Speaker 3 (01:46:42):
But why don't you think they do that? Why don't
they just say, as they.
Speaker 2 (01:46:46):
Would lose their tax EXIB status, they they don't have
to pay taxes right now because they're amateur athletics. I
don't know how much. I don't know the ins and
outs of it completely I know that the NC DOUBLEA
generates billions of dollars in revenue. They do redistribute a
lot of that back to the schools, but they're keeping
their money. Whoever's the head of the NC DOUBLEA, I
imagine he's making millions of dollars. I don't know who
(01:47:06):
exactly is grifting and getting all this money into their pockets.
But they can do all of this tax free once
they say that they're amateur athletics. And I don't know
how long it's been a house of cards forever. I
don't know how much longer it's going to be a
house of cards. Because they lost the name, image and
likeness lawsuit, they lost the ones where the with the
(01:47:29):
transfer rules, Remember players had to sit out a year
for transfers. Like they go to the Supreme Court and
they're like, why, there's no justifiable reason for it.
Speaker 3 (01:47:37):
It's not And I mean I was there in my
first freshman year orientation. Instead of athletics, they gave us
twenty twenty, they gave us a whole thirty thirty slide
PowerPoint point explaining what happens if you transfer and if
this gets passed and you don't you know, you gotta
do it this certain times. And this dates before, so
you don't get you know, all these hoops you had
(01:47:58):
to go through and it didn't make any sense to us.
Speaker 2 (01:48:00):
Yeah, it's it's crazy and it didn't really make any sense.
And now some people are they're challenging the isn't there
a lawsuit that is challenging the eligibility rules, like.
Speaker 3 (01:48:11):
Hey, if I'm in school, I should be able to play. Yeah,
see that, that's that's crazy.
Speaker 2 (01:48:15):
It slippery slow because no one wants these are get
like five degrees. I mean, yeah, no one wants the
verse the twenty seven year old, you know what I mean, Like, well,
then don't play, don't schedule b why you then see
that that's what they're They got the grown men's strength
over there. That's not fair, I know, but it's it's
just interesting the way that it's just spiraled out of control.
(01:48:38):
And it's been like this for a long time. As
I've mentioned before on air, I was reading this book
about Jim Thorpe who played college football back in the day.
Like they were getting back then, they were getting paid
under the table because they they were getting they were
getting percentages of the receipts I can't remember the name
(01:48:59):
of the school. It wasn't like a real college it was.
It was a Native American college and it was run
by Pop Warner and Jim Thorpe was like one of
the stars and he was playing until he was like
twenty three years old, and he had been playing professional.
Carlisle School, that's what it was as Yeah, he was
there from nineteen oh seven to nineteen fourteen and eighteen
(01:49:23):
ninety ninety nineteen oh three. Pop Warner was like this
Carlisle School. They were getting money to go on the
road to play Harvard, Yale, Pitt, Penn and Cornell and
whoever else that were all the powers back in those days.
And then they would Pop Warner was paying his players
under the table, like this was happening one hundred years ago.
Speaker 3 (01:49:44):
Yeah, I mean even as early late as Micropol was
in the aies doing was that UTEP playing football?
Speaker 2 (01:49:50):
Uh huh?
Speaker 3 (01:49:51):
And the UCLA coach that had recruited one of his
hometown friends was like coming over to USLA and under
the table, like you can't transfer back and you'd have
to just quit and just tramp on travel over there
and go on team like everything offering them for cash. Yeah,
you know what I'm saying, like, so, yeah, it's it's crazy.
(01:50:11):
We finally got a knot by the way, or believe
it for Alane Kifvin, it's up to eleven percent.
Speaker 2 (01:50:16):
There you go. LSU fans must have found it. It's
probably Chris Gordy on all his burners. We're up to
eleven percent. Believe Lane Kiffin. He didn't read the terms
of the contract. Okay, if you say sorry, guys, we're
gonna take quick break here on The Matt Thomas Show
with Ross.
Speaker 3 (01:50:33):
As I mentioned, not coming up in the next segment,
but the one after that NFL Slippery Slope.
Speaker 2 (01:50:38):
I'm disappointed to see it. We'll talk about that. We've
got college football stuff going on. Houston Texans in action
this weekend on Sunday Night Football. Anything you guys want
to get to, phone lines are open seven to one
three two one two five seven Nighty is the phone
number seven one three two one two five seven ninety
twelve thirty three in the PM here on a sports
(01:50:59):
talk seven. Ross Viya with you on The Matt Thomas
Show with Ross. Matt Thomas is out. You guys can
get in if you would like. Seven to one to
three two one two five seven ninety is the phone
number seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
We've been talking a lot of college football. I mean,
(01:51:20):
we had Chris Gordy in, but there's just like I said,
it's just I find I'm finding all of this fascinating,
the way that things continue to unfold in college football.
Like Texas A and M. You're not even waiting for
a season to be over, and you're giving an extension
to Mike Elko and now they've lost and they're not
(01:51:43):
gonna make the SEC championship game, so you don't have
to to fade possibly losing in that game. We'll see
what happens in the playoff eight. Maybe maybe the Aggies
are gonna be rewarded and Mike Elko is gonna go
on a dream run in the playoff and the Aggies
are gonna win the entire thing. I don't think they
all are one of the favorites. But hey, you get
in as a top one of the top seeds. Oh no,
(01:52:06):
they're not going to be a top four seed. But
my point is you get into the playoff, you got
a shot. Ohio State won it last year as a
six seed. So it can happen, but you are not
even waiting for seasons to be over. I always talk
about this, this recency bias, and we're so much prisoner
of the moment. This is the worst thing ever, that's
(01:52:28):
the best thing ever. This is the greatest coach ever.
That's the worst coach ever. To where Mike Elko wasn't
the guy for many Aggie fans last year, all of
a sudden, you start eleven or zero, the guy got
an extension ten months later. It's crazy. It's just the
way of the world. But it's crazy and well, like
(01:52:53):
I said, I like one of my favorite things about sports.
First of all, I work on this show. I talk
about a lot of sports, and we we end up
talking about this and that and how that's going to
play out, and and time is undefeated. Time play Everything
plays out in due time. That's one thing that that
I've really learned in sixteen years in this business. It
(01:53:13):
will make a genius of you, or oftentimes it will
make a fool of you. Over the years, we will
figure this out. You can have all the hot takes
you want, you can get your likes, and you can
get your uh, your impressions and say all this stupid stuff.
But over time, people people will see how much of
a fool you will. It reveals all truths, does time,
(01:53:35):
And I'm just curious to see how a lot of
these different things play out. I just don't. I have
it a feeling in my gut that Lane Kiffin isn't
going to be the guy because he didn't it didn't work,
he left Tennessee, didn't work out at USC and Ole Miss. Yes,
there have been some good some good seasons there, but
it's it's not like he's completely lit the world on fire,
(01:53:56):
and not necessarily like you're gonna get a national championship
winning coach come to your school anyways. But it's just
something doesn't sit right about Lane Kiffin. I can't exactly
put my finger on it. Maybe it's just some of
the circumstances and some of the stories now that are
coming out, like that he did you see that story
about how he has that dog and it's just for
pr And.
Speaker 3 (01:54:17):
Then some guy was getting mad at me like, hey,
this is this is a hunting dog and it's kept
at this kennel and you're showing your ignorance here, like
if you have a dog, and you don't live with
the dog, and and you don't take the dog with
you to your new place of business or where you're living.
Speaker 2 (01:54:31):
You were using the dog for pr you're using it
for like some digital hugs. I mean, it just is
what it is. And this other stuff is that I
saw this other stuff and this is unverified, Like apparently
he was playing. He was like at hot yoga and
like knocking people over and doing all this crazy stuff.
Lane Kiffin was.
Speaker 3 (01:54:48):
I don't know, man, I got questions about this. Dude,
did you see that? Or I saw a picture the Oxford.
Speaker 2 (01:54:58):
Oh, the Oxford yoga girls are all upset, are all
happy that he's leaving their yoga classes. He was like
he was changing the he was changing the thermostat whatever
he felt like it. What I will miss him walking
in late for class with that damn hoodie on, knowing
his Matt is ready and waiting on him. He would
start doing random workouts mid class and not follow the instructor,
(01:55:21):
coming in five minutes late, leaving twenty minutes early. Man,
they're coming after, Lane Kiffin. Of these yoga girls in Oxford,
I don't know. Just little stuff like that. Now, a
lot of these coaches aren't necessarily good people. Like I
think people would famously point out Steve Sarkisian when that
there was like that scene. Do you ever see that
video of the security guard like bumped him or something
(01:55:42):
like that and he loses his absolute mind? Oh like hey, relax, dude,
Like did you just take five smelling salts at once?
Sarc Like relax? And a lot of these coaches aren't
good people. They just aren't. Brian Kelly was thought of
as not a good person. Like to reach the top,
you know this, in your line of work and whatever
line of work, a lot of times you gotta step
(01:56:03):
on some necks in order to make your your way
to the top. And that's just how it is. People
didn't like Nick Saban. People didn't think Nick Saban was
a good guy around Tuscaloosa and didn't get treated well.
But you know what happened. Nick Saban won a lot
of football games. So that doesn't necessarily pue preclude Lane
(01:56:25):
Kiffin from winning at LSU. But I just I just
got a bad gun feeling about it. Seven one three
two point two five seven eighty is the phone number
Paul in Myerland is next up. What's up, Paul.
Speaker 16 (01:56:39):
Hey, Well, of course I gonna ask you who's this
new guy, Gosh.
Speaker 2 (01:56:42):
Gordon, Josh Jordan. Gordon Jordan, Josh Jordan in the afternoons.
So I'll give you a little bit of history on that.
Josh Jordan used to be an intern slash reporter for
US several years ago, and then unfortunately he got hired
away to a competitor because we could not cve a
(01:57:02):
competitive salary. I mean, it is what it is. And
then now he has come back and he is our
afternoon producer for UH for Adam and Adam and doing
the nightcap with Cole Thompson, being slotted to the morning
Drive with Dan and Cole.
Speaker 25 (01:57:17):
Yeah, yeah, I've been hearing him in the morning taking
the kids to school. But yeah, you need to talk
to this young man. He snugs me on his first
night hosting the show show that I helped contribute to
and make one.
Speaker 17 (01:57:28):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:57:28):
Do you does he not know that Paul in Myreland
is a legend in his own mind?
Speaker 4 (01:57:33):
Well, the producer did.
Speaker 17 (01:57:35):
He said, what are you drinking the night Paul?
Speaker 2 (01:57:38):
Oh? Wow, Yeah, you were having China box, weren't you.
Speaker 25 (01:57:42):
No, Actually they were out of signer.
Speaker 17 (01:57:43):
They had to get some cellar claws. Mmm.
Speaker 2 (01:57:46):
I'm sorry, okay, Paul, So the purpose of your call
was to call me and tell to tell you to
tell Josh Jordan to take your calls in the nightcap.
Speaker 25 (01:57:55):
No, no, no, no, that's just sideline. I want to know
about college football rule change passing and three depense the
passing appearance.
Speaker 2 (01:58:01):
Okay, it was used to.
Speaker 25 (01:58:02):
Be like fifteen yards in a first down, but now
I'm starting to see the spottle of the fouls on
some occasions, not all AGAs.
Speaker 17 (01:58:08):
I think.
Speaker 2 (01:58:08):
When it's under fifteen it's a spot.
Speaker 25 (01:58:10):
Foul, okay, and over fifteen it's I'll get you.
Speaker 17 (01:58:16):
Okay.
Speaker 16 (01:58:17):
Uh that's it.
Speaker 4 (01:58:18):
Under fifty pound spot foul.
Speaker 17 (01:58:20):
Over fifteen you get a fifteen yard penalty.
Speaker 2 (01:58:23):
Good deal, all right, thank you, appreciate you, Paul. I mean,
I guess I can double. I'll go flip through my
rule book. They're in the upcoming break. But uh, I
believe that as let's see what this is? What a
oh god, I don't know if we can trust Google
AI A penalty calh blah blah blah. The penalty is
an automatic first down for the offense. Ball place at
the spot of the foul if it's less than fifteen yeah,
from the line of scrimmage with a or a fifteen
(01:58:45):
yard penalty if it occurred more than fifteen yards down
the field. There's some people that want that in the
NFL to where like there's these questionable calls forty five
yards down the field, and like a forty five yard
gain is pretty insane. I mean that you're talking about
flipping the field. That's ridiculous.
Speaker 3 (01:59:00):
Yeah, no, because then then coaches can play with against that,
and that's true.
Speaker 2 (01:59:05):
But also honestly, but sometimes the player the reason the
rule is invoked the way it is because people probably
especially back in the day when they barely had a
forward pass, people are probably like ripping guys down by
their face masks and uh, and they wanted to make
it a more severe penalty. So I understand as well,
But like when it's a ticky tack, you're like, I
don't even think that's pass interference, and then you get
(01:59:26):
forty yards on it. It's kind of crazy, for sure,
But I also like not rewarding where people do sometimes
do it on purpose in order to avoid a big play.
And I bet you that came more in play when
the forward pass was this new thing, Like, hey, hey,
these guys are cheating. They keep throwing the ball forward.
What the hell is this? I would have rip this
(01:59:47):
guy down. I don't know what to do, all right. Anyways,
we're gonna take a quick break here on the Matt
Thomas Show with Ross. You will guys want to get in.
Speaker 3 (01:59:53):
You want to ask me some procedural rules about college football?
Speaker 2 (01:59:56):
Actually, please don't do that. Let's discuss some college football.
Am I crazy to say? Lane Kiffin is going to
exit under unfavorable circumstances within four years at LSU. You
want to talk about anything else going on in college football,
you can talking about the Texans and what is going
on with them this weekend against the Kansas City Chiefs.
(02:00:19):
And also, I'm very disappointed in you NFL. We'll get
to that next. You guys want to get in, you
can seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
Is the phone number seven one three two one two
five seven ninety. The NFL rewind is coming up at
one twenty here on a sports talk seven ninety. Will
(02:00:44):
and Adam join me. I don't think so.
Speaker 3 (02:00:48):
Adam Clanton said he can't he's feeling a little bit sick,
so he doesn't want to do the extra time.
Speaker 2 (02:00:52):
I appreciate it. They also have a meeting I think
so could be me flying solo to at two o'clock.
You know what that means. That means an opportunity for
you to get in and have free reign on anything
you would like to talk about. Seven one three two
one two five seven ninety is the phone number if
you would like to get in. Seven one three two
one two five seven ninety. I also would appreciate a
(02:01:15):
follow to my Instagram account at sports RV. You know what,
I'll follow you back from now until one o'clock. You
follow me at sports RV on my Instagram, I will
follow you back. Also, you can follow me at sports
RV on Twitter where let's see. I put the the
poll question about Lane Kiffen. Do you believe him or not?
(02:01:38):
He said, I don't know what my contract is here
at LSU. I'm being serious, all right, ninety percent not
nine point five percent believe him. I don't believe you
people even believe that's probably nine percent fingerslips. You know,
sometimes you misclick when you go to the poll, which
I do that time to time on the Twitter verse.
(02:01:58):
All right, anyways, phone lines open, as I said seven
one three two one two five seven ninety if you
would like to get in. I was talking about this earlier,
something that has greatly disappointed me, and I'm not even surprised.
Speaker 18 (02:02:12):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (02:02:13):
I hold NFL Red Zone in very high esteem. To me.
It is like the greatest three one of the greatest
inventions of my lifetime. And I wish I were joking,
but as a sports fan who has a sports career
and has thrown my life into sports, I freaking love
Red Zone. It's NonStop, full football action. And it used
(02:02:37):
to be said by Scott Hansen before the broadcasts, this
is seven hours of commercial free football coming your way.
And we knew this was gonna happen. When ESPN acquired
NFL Network and NFL Red Zone, they said they were
gonna pepper in ads. But in week one it was
(02:03:00):
just four fifteen second advertisements and you even had water
carrying Adam Schefter put a tweet out, hey guys, this
is not a big deal. This is going to be
just four to fifteen second ads. We're talking about one
minute over the course of seven hour broadcasts and Anybody
with a brain with any semblance of sense knows that
(02:03:24):
there's going to be a slippery slope. It's happened with
all the streaming services. It happened when YouTube. Remember when
you could skip every YouTube a YouTube ad within like
five seconds. Don't get me started, I know.
Speaker 3 (02:03:37):
Now you gotta get like forty five seconds sometimes before
you can get a skip.
Speaker 2 (02:03:41):
It depends on what you're watching or whatever. It used
to be everything with skipping within five. Then it was fifteen.
Now sometimes it's thirty or forty five. It's this slippery
slope with advertisers, which, by the way, you can go
ahead and uh patronize, are wonderful advertisers here at sports
Talk seven ninety. I know that advertising dollars may the
world go round, but the slippery slopes to keep having
(02:04:03):
where they keep on wanting more and more and more,
and the streaming service price goes up and up and up,
and now you have it. Used to be when you
paid for the streaming service, you did not get ads.
Now you pay for the streaming service and you get ads,
and then you have to pay extra to not get ads.
Now the NFL network in the NFL NFL Red Zone
(02:04:26):
within one season, they have gone eightfold with the advertisements.
This article that I'm reading from awful announcing eight minutes
and ten seconds of sponsored elements throughout Sunday noon Sunday's
afternoon broadcast. That's so said, And I know the counter argument, Oh,
it's just eight minutes out of seven hours. What's the
big deal? But you went from one minute to eight.
(02:04:49):
I'm mean, Jonathan, thank you. I'm busying it right now.
It's nothing sacred. It's nothing sacred in this world of ours.
I want to sit down and watch seven hours of
commercial free football. That's what I've been promised by Scott Hansen,
an NFL red zone for years and years.
Speaker 3 (02:05:10):
And frankly, that's just scary to the world of media.
We're gonna grow into like is this gonna get worse
and worse? Do we have to just just be okay
with all these commercials everywhere?
Speaker 2 (02:05:18):
We can't just watch something because we want to. When
he does it, stop go back to Basays and some
CDs man, Because I mean, if I'm gonna tell you,
these corporations aren't struggling. NBC is while they're making a
bunch of layoffs. But that priory, that stock price keeps
going up, that CEO salary keeps going up. NFL and
ESPN and Disney. Yeah, they're making all these uh, they're
making all these layoffs. That stock pricing is pretty good,
(02:05:42):
and it's just more and more and more in taking
over because this is disease of more. It's it's kind
of everywhere. I mean, it is what it is. And
maybe I'm just being an old man shaking my fist
at a cloud, but literally in week you went from
last year to no advertisements to week one with four
advertisements up to a minute, and now you're talking about
(02:06:05):
five to eight minutes within a several weeks time. It's crazy.
I just want to watch football, and some of them
in double box and some of them aren't. Their banner
ads responds whatever. It's just it's it's invading what was
a sacred space. And the reason I'm also railing is
so much against it is because you have to pay
(02:06:26):
extra for Red Zone. Depending on what you have. You
either a have Sunday ticket, which you get red Zone
for free, but Sunday ticket ain't free, or b you
pay extra for the Red Zone package with your cable company,
or you're paying for NFL Plus, which I do. So
I am paying for a service to watch commercial free
(02:06:47):
football and it goes from week one to one minute,
up to five minutes, and within the matter of weeks
to eight minutes, eight minutes and ten seconds is what
this awful announcing article says of advertise as in comeback
of advertising content. And you know what the saddest part
about this is, I'm not gonna turn it off. I'm
(02:07:09):
not gonna stop watching. They got me, and they know
they got me. They've been planning this. Oh well, I'm
probably not twenty years knew. They knew that they were
gonna soft launch a minute of spots and then eventually
it's gonna be up to like five to ten. I
didn't know it's gonna be this quick, but like, think
about it.
Speaker 3 (02:07:25):
They threw out streaming and this is my little tentfoil
hat on real quick, just for a minute. You they
you give us all the streaming like you say you
saw offrom Netflix. Okay, you can't tell me back then
when they saw how big Netflix is going into streaming service,
so they weren't putting their planet.
Speaker 2 (02:07:38):
The plan YouTube has a YouTube and google if had
a plan of a when to when to integrate spots,
how to add more. Yeah, they all have multi year
growth plans. Absolutely, you're right, and I just didn't know
it was going to be this quick man. It's it
just makes me sad to something that was so sacred
to me to where I could sit on my couch
(02:07:59):
and watch what's Scott Hanson described as that's that's another
reason I'm upset I was sold to Bill of Goods.
Scott hands will get on there seven hours of commercial
free football. I'm like, yes, let's freaking go no longer,
all right. Seven one three two one two five seven
(02:08:19):
ninety is the phone number if you want to get in.
We're talking about, Uh, I don't know the NFL disappointing me.
We've been talking about some college football. You got the
Texans this weekend Sunday night football against the Chiefs. If
they win this, how much more are you willing to
admit they are a f C contenders. Seven one three
two one two five seven ninety is the phone number.
(02:08:39):
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety. Speaking
of advertising, I think you should go to t r
T MVP dot com. But see, we don't sell we
you never you never say we're gonna bring you commercial
free content here at Sports Talk seven ninety no is
the Mac Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 3 (02:09:04):
Our number four of The Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 2 (02:09:09):
Without Matt Thomas. Ros VI Real with you. Jonathan Allen
is here as well. Phone lines open at seven one
three two one two five seven ninety seven one three
two one two five seven ninety. Appreciate you those of
you interacting on the Twitter verse. Jones says, can't agree
(02:09:29):
more with about red zone. Thank you.
Speaker 3 (02:09:32):
I mean, it was supposed it was this. It was
like a sanctuary, like a football sanctuary. And it's been
invaded by advertisements.
Speaker 2 (02:09:40):
And they should have never I kind of actually thought
about that over the years, like, hey, they say, how
much longer are they going to be able to say
seven hours of commercial free football? It was so comforting
just to hear that. And then now it's been invaded
by spots. When week one when everybody got upset, and
and and then you they they sent out their little
shit Adam Schefter, who has to protect the shield. Hey guys,
(02:10:04):
it's only it's only one minute of advertising. And then
now by week thirteen or whatever we're in these days,
it's it's up to eight minutes and ten seconds. Crazy
how quickly these things go and and they and they
need more and more and more, because yeah, I'm sure
Mickey Mouse is struggling. And Disney, you know what do
(02:10:24):
I dar? I even bring bring up the the Disney
stock I'm sure they're doing quite well. Oh huh, yeah,
it's actually it's been it's been down, but it's fine whatever.
It's like one hundred dollars, it's still it's still up
a lot from where where it was ten years ago.
Twenty eleven, it was thirty nine dollars. Now it's one
hundred and five. Shut up, stock holders, you're going to
(02:10:46):
add all these advertisements? When does it become enough? Never,
I guess, especially like I said, look, I'm not tuning
out so they're winning, it's not it's not enough to
make me. I don't know if there's what they could
possibly do to make you tune out a red zone
and taken a lie. I don't think it's gonna happen.
So you win this round. N FL and Disney seven
(02:11:09):
one three two one two five seven ninety is the
phone number. Another tweet from yall and easy funny you
bring up to ads with Wisney Fluss has ads now,
and my daughter is pissed. The fine print said they
added the commercials now and have to upgrade even more
to acc them. Yeah like that. It used to be
you're playing for whatever Disney Plus or Hulu or whatever
(02:11:30):
Apple Plus, you pay for the service. You shouldn't have
to pay the service and get the advertisement. As I said,
we have advertiser here. We are free free on the
iHeartRadio app, free on seven ninety am. Check us out
on all your podcast pages as well, Spotify, iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts,
(02:11:51):
et cetera. We don't charge you keep a free baby.
Let's go. Seven one three two one two five seven
ninety is the phone number Jose holding here on the
phone lines. What's up, Jose, Hey, guys, I'm doing great.
What you got? No?
Speaker 23 (02:12:08):
I was just calling in sense we're on our soapbox
about commercials and advertising.
Speaker 4 (02:12:12):
Yes.
Speaker 23 (02:12:12):
I just want to say that I appreciate to not
hear that nonsense blue Dodger green craziness that we're Yes.
Speaker 2 (02:12:24):
Now, that's well, I guess and necessarily not paid. That
was from iHeart National. I'm I'm glad that's over too.
That was first of all, our company, in their infinite wisdom,
has invested a lot of money into these podcasts. You
heard like the John Wall podcast. You heard the Sarah
Spain women's sports podcast. It was like the uh, what's it?
(02:12:46):
A Cassidy hubbar Filipino basketball podcast. These decisions are above
my head. I would rather they invest in our local products.
That's not up to me. I love you, iHeart Please
don't ask me. But yeah, go ahead.
Speaker 23 (02:13:05):
As long as we don't hear it, Hey, it makes
it even that better for the holiday.
Speaker 2 (02:13:10):
Yeah. I think once, once the Dodgers won the World Series,
they act those thank you Jose for getting in it.
In their infinite wisdom, they said, we're going to make
a podcast about one baseball team, and then we're going
to run advertisements throughout the nation using up our inventory.
And then they are going to we are going to
(02:13:30):
also do that in Houston, where they hate. They do that.
In San Francisco they hate the Dodgers there too, They
do that in I don't know if there's iheartmeat in Toronto,
I don't think there is, But like wherever else where,
they don't like the Dodgers. I don't know. But of
all the markets where you should probably skip advertising for
your Dodger Blue podcast. Houston has to be on the
(02:13:53):
short list, if not number one. But you know, sometimes
you work at your job and you don't think the
bosses are necessarily in tune with what's going on. Down
to the nth degree. Happens here too, so that's okay.
Don't listen to the Dodger Blue Blue podcast. Listen to
the Matt Thomas Show with Ross Podcasts.
Speaker 3 (02:14:14):
It's available on iHeartMedia, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Spreaker, sure, anywhere
you get podcasts.
Speaker 2 (02:14:20):
You can check it out. Jonathan takes the time to
cut those up. We appreciate him, and you can upload
those and you can listen to those. We really do
appreciate it. So no Dodger Blue podcast advertisements at least
since the end of the world series that I saw.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety is
the phone number if you'd like to get in. Seven
one three two one two five seven ninety. Steve is
(02:14:42):
next up, holding longest. What's up?
Speaker 26 (02:14:45):
Yeah, Ross, thank you for putting me on before I
launch into this. I want everybody just so nobody gets
me wrong. I love my Houston Texans proud of the
fact that they won the last four games, three out
of the last four with the backup quarterback. They're doing right,
God bless them all. I think the NFL is fundamentally
(02:15:06):
a better league when the Patriots are winning, and they
put on quite a show last night. I have some
very good reasons for saying that. I think they had
such a phenomenal run of excellence for such a long
time with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, and all of
(02:15:27):
a sudden, it looks like like there's a new dynasty
being reborn over there, and I just I think it's
a wonderful thing. What do you think about that?
Speaker 2 (02:15:35):
Ross, I think I'm rooting against the Patriots. I don't
necessarily agree that the NFL is a better product with
the Patriots. I don't think of them as Packers, Steelers,
who else? Of course, Cowboys those types maybe like the
second tier of that because they had that great run.
(02:15:56):
Of course, I mean they were. I mean, don't get
me wrong. There was a time where I would say
on this airwave, Steve, they were America's team ahead of
the Cowboys. The Cowboys.
Speaker 26 (02:16:08):
Well, I was going to say, no, I I agree
with you on that, and and and to just add
to that, I think I think they still are. And
I think there's another and this is a little abstract here, Ross,
but I think the NFL is better with the Patriots
on top because football is America's sport right now. Baseball
(02:16:29):
is Houston sport, but football is America's sport. So football,
since it's America's sport, ought to be patriotic.
Speaker 3 (02:16:39):
Oh, okay, and Blue, where are the Patriots?
Speaker 2 (02:16:47):
I got you.
Speaker 26 (02:16:47):
It shouldn't be about Colin Kaepernick and taking it.
Speaker 2 (02:16:53):
A long time, Steve, exactly.
Speaker 26 (02:16:57):
But the whole taken sprang from him, okay, and I
think nobody got hurt. But I think if the Patriots
won it all this year, because if you're eleven and
two in December, your sites are set on a Super
Bowl championship, which is where they ought to be, and
should they win it all, I think it would take
(02:17:18):
that whole era of the NFL and put it behind
us once.
Speaker 2 (02:17:22):
And I think that is a ridiculous statement, Steve. I mean,
I don't. I don't think anybody's thinking about Colin Kaepernick
right now. I just don't. I mean, it's not even politics, really,
it's football. What the the NFL is better with the
(02:17:46):
Patriots because of the red, watt and blue. The Chiefs
have been winning. That's fine. I don't think that anybody's Hey,
the Eagles are patriotic. What's more patriotic than an Eagle?
They won the Super Bowl last year. I think that
is well overplayed and not in the minds of anybody.
I haven't even heard the name Colin Kaepernick on this
(02:18:06):
air in years and years. I don't think that. Maybe
that's top of mind for you and whatever bubble you're
living in, but I haven't thought about him or those
you know. What's more?
Speaker 3 (02:18:20):
Also, what's more American than an ego? What's more American
than than protesting something that you think is an injustice?
Speaker 2 (02:18:25):
I mean, any who? Any who? I don't think I
honestly don't think of the Patriots as the NFL's better
with them, as like a Tier one type of team.
I would like, I said some of the teams I
had listed, The Cowboys, of course, I mean lover more hatum.
(02:18:45):
They are. It is what it is. There's a reason
they are on Sunday Night Football as much as they
are Packers, a heritage NFL brand. The Raiders used to
be in that mix. I wouldn't put them there now.
Steelers of course one of the all time, but it
doesn't matter to me in the NFL, Like it was
(02:19:06):
the Eagles and the Chiefs last year, and it was
a great super Bowl. Kansas City and the Chiefs were
not some great, huge brand in the NFL. And that's
kind of the beauty of the NFL is you can
win everywhere when they anywhere, when they have this hardcap league,
it doesn't matter where you are. You can be great.
As I listed off Green Bay, Green Bay, freaking Wisconsin, Like, yeah,
(02:19:30):
you get a lot more eyeballs because of the brand
that they are, but you can also build your own brand.
The Patriots weren't some crazy, great, winning historic franchise before
Bill Belichick and Tom Brady went on their historic run
that they had there, and the same for the Kansas
City Chiefs had they won a Super Bowl Hank Straham
and the Boys in the nineteen sixties, but there were
(02:19:52):
dormant franchise for decades. You get Andy Reid, you get
Pat Mahomes, you go to four Super Bowls and win
a couple of them over a stretch of five, six,
seven years. Whatever it's been oh, they've won three.
Speaker 3 (02:20:05):
Now, geez, they've won three Super Bowls since twenty twenty,
they've been to five.
Speaker 2 (02:20:11):
That's insane. Yeah, you know what happens. You become you
become a heritage brand, you become a big deal, you
become a great Right now, you could say it's great
for the league that the Chiefs are good. Nobody was
saying that ten years ago. Nobody's saying that when it
was like, I don't know Matt Castle and whoever else
over there, I would put the Ravens on that list.
(02:20:33):
Like the Ravens when they're great and it's good for
the NFL, they're cool, they're fun to watch. Buffalo Bills,
they've been great for the NFL. They get a lot
of eyeballs because they've been good. Doesn't matter where you
are or what the name of your team is. Just win, baby.
That'd be nice if the Houston Texans could just win
(02:20:54):
against the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend. We shall see,
all right. Seven one three two one two seven ninety
is the phone number if you want to get in
that was interesting. Are you're gonna follow that act? You
can seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
You can also send tweets at sports RV and drop
me a follow on Instagram at sports RV as well.
(02:21:16):
Ross very out with you until two o'clock. We're gonna
take a quick break, come back and talk about anything
you guys want to get to at seven one three,
two one two five seven ninety all right, NFL rewind
in just a second, but we had Dave holding, so
we want to get him really quickly before we do that,
Let's get Dave on the north side.
Speaker 17 (02:21:34):
What's up, Hey, what's going on with my friend?
Speaker 2 (02:21:39):
I'm doing very well? Thank you for asking.
Speaker 17 (02:21:42):
Very good, big, yeah, very good. Nice to hear you.
We know that the Dallas Caraboys have their own brand
right nationwide, and the Dallas Cowboys a callin America's team, right, yes, okay,
So what about Houston Texans?
Speaker 16 (02:22:01):
Uh?
Speaker 17 (02:22:02):
The Houston Texans are in Texas.
Speaker 2 (02:22:04):
Yes, the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 17 (02:22:06):
Are in Texas. Question, can you did? Do you do
you think that the Texans brand can be built up
off of the Dallas Cowboys football brand?
Speaker 2 (02:22:24):
What do you mean off of greater than greater than Yeah,
at least in the state of Texas. I absolutely do.
There's there's there's one solution.
Speaker 17 (02:22:38):
What's the solution.
Speaker 2 (02:22:40):
When when when win and win some more? When the
Texans were actually ripping off some wins and looking good,
it was like the you know, the the the Brian Cushing,
JJ Watt, Matt shaub Era. I don't know if people
remember this. Like they were doing tours across Texas and
they were doing they were trying to invest in and
go into the valley in San Antonio and other places,
(02:23:01):
and like they were getting people to come out like
you can. It was just a small pop if if
they could win. I'm talking about like basically to what
the Chiefs are or or what like I said, what
the Patriots were. If you can rip off multiple Super Bowls,
you could absolutely be the number one team in Texas.
It's for the taking right now. It is you have
(02:23:22):
to ingrain yourself with children. You have to to build
their bread. Honestly, you do. I mean you there are
people who switch allegiances, do you. I'll give you an example, Dave.
It's been a tussle for between the Astros and the
Rangers in Texas. People forget when the Astros were terrible
and the Rangers were winning or going to back to
(02:23:42):
back World Series when you went to Minute May Park
when the Rangers came into town. Don't you remember there
was a ton of Rangers fans in town, right and
and yes they're they and they're where. You saw Rangers
gear everywhere. And that was just, as I said, a
small pop. That was a couple of years of making
back to back World Series. If you could make the
(02:24:03):
playoffs and not just ten and seven and out in
the first round playoffs. If you can make deep runs
in the playoffs. I'm talking AFC championship games, super Bowl appearances,
super Bowl wins, then the winning will If the winning happens,
the fans will come. That's just that's just the way
of the world. How there there's a nationwide Chiefs fan
(02:24:25):
base that did not exist ten years ago.
Speaker 17 (02:24:27):
Right now, Well, I've here's my take on the Houston
Texas brand. If the Texas continue they're winning wings right now,
and continue to win until they get to the AFC
Championship Game and try to look up on getting into
(02:24:50):
the Super Bowl this year or even next year, then maybe,
just maybe, if they continue to win some games they're
not supposed to win, then maybe, just maybe they'll get
their own nationwide brand.
Speaker 2 (02:25:09):
Yeah, yeah, it would just say it would take winning. Now, Houston,
Texas is not a great name for for nationwide success,
but when Bob McNair named the team, his vision was
to become the team of Texas that has not come
to fruition and it has not come close. And the
number one reason is they have not won. I mean
all those teams that I named that are heritage brands
(02:25:31):
of football. We're talking about super Bowls winning, Green Bay
Packers a million NFL championships and a handful of Super Bowls.
Steelers six Super What do they have?
Speaker 16 (02:25:42):
Five?
Speaker 2 (02:25:42):
Six Super Bowls? Cowboys five Super Bowls? Like, yeah, you
win nobody nobody's uh, there's no nationwide brand for the
Minnesota Vikings. There just isn't. They haven't won. You got
to win. It's very very simple, but it's also hard.
At the same time, the salt is simple, getting there
is difficult. When when win and win some more. The
(02:26:07):
Houston Astros have taken over this state, you go. I'll
give you an example. I lived in Austin when I
was on campus when I went to ut around two thousand,
two thousand and three is when I started there. That
was when you had bigio and Bagwell and the Astros
were making deep playoff runs and went to a World
Series in two thousand and five. Austin, Austin was an
(02:26:30):
Astros town, then it became a Rangers town, and now
it's back to in an Astros town. It's all about
who's good. There are diehards, but you have to remember
most people who are fans are casuals. They put on
they they put on the gear, they watch the games,
they pay attention a little bit more, and the most
people like to watch winners. Everybody likes to watch a winner.
(02:26:53):
Some people didn't get to. So yeah, the more that
you win, the more that you can be the the
bigger brand. It's very simple. So if the Texans can
get to and win a couple of Super Bowls somehow,
at some point in their history in all while the Cowboys,
(02:27:14):
they do have the disadvantage of the built in Cowboys
fan base. The Cowboys are making super Bowls and winning,
and that would be crazy if they ever played each other.
The Cowboys are the biggest brand and they had the
bigger potential. But the Texans can win, that's all they
have to do. They just have not done it. They
have not gotten close. Unfortunately. I mean, you're this late
(02:27:37):
in the game. Since two thousand and two, you have
not made an AFC Championship game. It's embarrassing. It's embarrassing,
and I'm not saying it's gonna happen this year, but
it feels like if they can win against Kansas City,
offense can play a little bit better, they have a
super Bowl caliber winning defense, and then you can get
(02:28:02):
more fans, whether it be in Austin, San Antonio, the
Valley where El Paso, whoever. Because all those places that
I just named, they're Dallas Cowboys hot beds. Why because
it's been ingrained that Dallas Cowboys won at least previously.
It can be generational as well. Fandom can be passed
down from generation to generation. Of course, kids these days,
they march to the beat of their own drum. Give
(02:28:23):
them something to root for. Kids love to troll their
parents and root against their interests. So hey, what better
way to break a generational curse of Cowboy fandom than
I have a good Texans team to root for. But
kids aren't going to root for a team that's two
and ten. Las Vegas Raiders aren't picking up a bunch
of fans right now? Uh well, who else is terrible? Saints?
(02:28:48):
Saints are horrible. Arizona Cardinals, they have no national cachet
or brand. They made one super Bowl that I can
recall and they have a won one. Go out there
and as Al Davis would say, just win baby, and
the fans will come. Happened with the Astros, It can
absolutely happen with the Texans. All Right, we went a
(02:29:11):
little long there, so we are gonna take a break
and then we're gonna get to the NFL. Rewind in
the next segment. You guys want to get in, you
can seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
Is the phone number seven one three two one two
five A seven ninety. We'll take a look around the league.
Coming up next here on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
(02:29:36):
Oh Hi, I'm so so host show.
Speaker 3 (02:29:38):
Okay, fine Rosby Reality Here with Jonathan Allen on the
Not Matt Thomas Show on a Sports Talk seven ninety.
Before you start, Matt sold men tell you next time
he's out. He says that hurts my feelings when he
says Matt Thomas Show with Ross without Matt why. He
just wants you to say that Matt's not here. Don't
(02:30:00):
don't hurt the messenger.
Speaker 17 (02:30:01):
I'm just.
Speaker 2 (02:30:03):
She's so weird you're not here?
Speaker 3 (02:30:07):
How could And you know what, I say that out
of respect for him, because the show is named after him,
and that's fine. I'm the little whatever, back pocket guy
who named Ross. It's the Matt Thomas Show with Ross,
and so out of respect, I still call the show
the Matt Thomas Show when he's out, but I just
(02:30:29):
add that without Matt Thomas, because he's not here, it
can't be with me because it and that's also a
play on with Ross, without Matt Thomas.
Speaker 2 (02:30:37):
Because he's not here. How could I possibly how should
I frame this? You know, he wants me to say
and Matt, Matt is out, Matt Thomas Show with Ross
and Matt is out? And how is that at all
materially different from saying without Matt Thomas, don't don't.
Speaker 3 (02:30:55):
I didn't ask any questions, okay you when he was
out there, I'm gonna say the wait, you know what
you want to say?
Speaker 2 (02:31:01):
It right? Come back, all right, sit in this chair,
and you say whatever you want. It's the Matt Thomas
Show with Ross. Without Matt Thomas, he will be back,
and I always clarify when I say it, he'll be
back tomorrow. He's out with I don't know what he's doing.
He's getting some Cyber Tuesday deals, whatever he's doing, he's
not here. He'll be back tomorrow. Rockets will be back
(02:31:21):
in action tomorrow as well. They got home late last
night from Utah, so Matt Thomas is out today. Anywhou
we were gonna do, we're gonna do. The NFL rewind here.
In just a second, I did get a tweet from Jones.
San Antonio will never be a Texans fan base. See
I think you you under now. First of all, obviously
San Antonio is a Dallas Cowboys foothold. Why is it
(02:31:44):
a why Why is it a Dallas Cowboys foothold? Because
they won. I'm not saying that Texans will take over
the San Antonio, but long term of generations, if they're
winning Super after Super bol after Super Bowl and the
Cowboys aren't doing anything over time, they could definitely go
(02:32:04):
from probably close to zero percent fan base in San
Antonio to whatever thirty forty fifty percent, depending on how
much winning you're doing. I'm saying it's possible. I would
never say that's impossible. It would take winning to a
very high degree for the Texans to do that. Everything
is yours for the taking if you win. That's just
(02:32:26):
period when it comes to the NFL. All right, anyways,
infl rewind, let's go ahead and look at a number
of different things. We talked about this a couple of
times early on the show, but I think it bears repeating.
Jackson Dart getting blowed up by the Patriots a couple
of times in that game. Literally, did you see it?
(02:32:47):
Was you ever watched the Manning cast? Eli and Peyton Manning. Yeah,
they're like, Jackson Dart's gotta stop running like Roy he is.
He's got to learn in this league that you need
to go down, you gotta slide. Literally, like five seconds later,
he gets crushed into the backfield. Like he starts to
go down, but he takes a big hit and he's
like yeah, like that. And then later on in the game,
(02:33:09):
Jackson Dart is going down the right sideline. If you
see the end zone view, you can tell he should
have gone out of bounds like five yards before he did. Yeah,
he gets absolutely crushed.
Speaker 3 (02:33:20):
Eli and Peter are like, oh my god, what is
he doing.
Speaker 2 (02:33:25):
Jackson Dart says, I'm sorry to all times. Okay, Eli
Manning's not an all time great, but he did win
two Super Bowls. An all time great quarterback and a
guy who knows a little bit about quarterbacking who won
two Super Bowls, Eli Manning, are telling you to stop
taking all these hits, and Jackson started Dart says, I'm good. Look,
I'm gonna keep playing aggressive.
Speaker 5 (02:33:45):
No, hopefully everybody can take a second to watch my
tape going back to high school and realize that this
is not a shock.
Speaker 2 (02:33:52):
Like, I play the game aggressively.
Speaker 5 (02:33:55):
I took one hit that people are talking about, a slid,
got out of the way a lot of it. So
I appreciate people, you know, wanting to you know, me
to be healthy and all that stuff, and I want
to be healthy too. But I play this game aggressive,
so I'm not I'm not going to just change how
I play the game.
Speaker 2 (02:34:14):
I'm Jackson Dart, I'm twenty two years old, I'm the
hot shot, first round pick. I'm in the toast of
New York. I know better than you Hall of famers. Okay,
all right, mister Dart, Oh my god, sorry, Early Holland
just missed. I'm watching Fulham in Man City. Look at this, guys,
look at the early holland just missed a sitter. I
(02:34:34):
mean my, I mean he opened it up from so
all right, let's move on, all right, let's you know
it's the football rewind right talking about early halland missing shots. Terrible?
All right? Anyways, moving along in NFL circles, the Kansas
City Chiefs have lost their last game, and they did
against the Cowboys. They are six and six now and
(02:34:58):
Andy Reid was asked questions about winning out to make
the playoffs. Here it is with the reporters question. I'm
sure you've you've looked at the standings. This this isn't
your first rodeo. You know that you pretty.
Speaker 27 (02:35:10):
Much have to win the next five games if you
if you lose one, you're gonna need a lot of
help to get into playoffs. What's your level of confidence
that things can start going your way and that you
can win these next five games.
Speaker 2 (02:35:21):
In a row. Yeah, well, I believe that. I mean,
I believe you.
Speaker 23 (02:35:25):
Come.
Speaker 28 (02:35:26):
If you're coming to me on this, Matt, I'm telling
you we're going to go after you every game. And
you know that's how we roll. We're going to try
to tickle your tonsils on every every play, every game,
and uh, but that's that's the attitude that we're we're
coming in with. Then then that you let the chips
(02:35:46):
fall where they may. But at the same time, you
got to make sure you take care of the small
things here that we've got rolling. We've got to make
sure that we get rid of some of these mistakes.
But there's not a game that I go into that
I don't think we're gonna get after you.
Speaker 2 (02:36:02):
We're going to tickle your tickle your tongue. What does
that mean?
Speaker 3 (02:36:05):
I'm gonna be I guess like you know, getting your
face in your mouth that like you know, saution.
Speaker 2 (02:36:09):
We're gonna tickle your tonsils every game down the stretch.
Like I don't even know he's gonna make out with you.
What is he tickling the tonsils with? I'm at a loss.
Speaker 3 (02:36:27):
Maybe from he's the.
Speaker 2 (02:36:32):
Same reason I don't even want to Google search tickle
tonsils on my work laptop. I'm not trying to get
red flagged by the FBI. So I don't know where
that came from, But there you go. Andy Reid says
that the uh, the Kansas City Chiefs are going to
tickle your tops.
Speaker 3 (02:36:51):
A persistent irritating sensation in the back of your throat
that can be caused by several things.
Speaker 2 (02:36:55):
Mouth, what does that mean? Though? So it's just like,
what does that mean in a football context?
Speaker 3 (02:36:59):
I guess it's like he's just gonna be irritating, Like
you can be ritating, you can be always like.
Speaker 2 (02:37:02):
Are you gonna irritatetical? Yeah? That was I don't know.
Chiefs scheduled down the stretch home for the Texans on
Sunday Night football, home for the Chargers, at the Titans,
home for the Broncos, then at the Raiders. It's winnable
big ones being of course the Broncos and the Texans.
(02:37:23):
Why am the Chargers and they get all of those
games at home. Hopefully Texans can pull another upset this
weekend on Sunday Night football. All right. Elsewhere in the NFL,
some news apparently Tehran Matthew is interested in a reunion
with the Houston Texans. But I do know this, the Texas,
(02:37:46):
the Texas, the way the Texas lay defense.
Speaker 16 (02:37:49):
You man, listen, I'll come back to play for a.
Speaker 2 (02:37:52):
Defense like that. Are you ready to come back for
the right situation. Who wouldn't Yes, Teyran Matthew, the honey Badger.
He retired earlier, wasn't he in camp? I think with
the Saints. I think I think he was. Yeah exactly,
He's like, oh, yeah, you know what, guys, I'm gonna
ahead retire. It's like, who was at Buffalo Bill's dB
(02:38:14):
the other year he retired?
Speaker 3 (02:38:15):
Like at halftime, hold on, I'm looking.
Speaker 2 (02:38:21):
I'm literally looking it up right now.
Speaker 18 (02:38:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:38:23):
Vonte Davis, Yes, their ass kicked. He's like, yeah, guys,
uh you know, team on three, one two three me
I'm out of here, see you, guys.
Speaker 3 (02:38:34):
Vonte Davis said, one two three, can coude at halftime?
Speaker 2 (02:38:38):
That's basically what. At least Tyron Matthew didn't do it
at halftime. I think he did it in training camp
thirty three years old. Yeah, he was like, we're good,
I'm gonna go. But Tyron Matthew back in the Houston
Texans uniform, says he's interested. You would have to make
a trade because he's on the reserve retired list. If
(02:38:59):
the Texans were interested in doing that, I don't even know.
Can you even do that? Pass the trade deadline. Can
you retire a retired player or how that? Even I
don't know. I don't know anything about any of this,
all right, any who? Moving along over the weekend of
the NFL some big games. Well you knew the Thanksgiving
(02:39:20):
results that we had with the Cowboys beating the Chiefs
as predicted by one mister Jonathan Allen.
Speaker 3 (02:39:27):
Congratulations to you. You have a new leader in the
AFC South, the Tennessee Titans. I mean, can you show up?
I guess they did in both times against the Texans.
They kind of showed up the second time, but not really.
Texas were just terrible.
Speaker 2 (02:39:42):
Uh. What's going with the Jaguars leading the AFC South.
Now they get the Colts at home, then they play
the Jets at home, who are terrible of course, at
the Broncos and at the Colts again, and then the
Titans at home. So it'll be interesting to see how
this shakes out. Texans need to beat the Colts again.
They split with the Jaguars already. Who do you think
(02:40:04):
right now, Jonathan the favorite in the AFC South Texans
oo oo? Because the Colts and jagg are gonna play
each other twice.
Speaker 3 (02:40:17):
Yeah, so, and I actually you know what, how much
ux I was listening to Okay, he's laying it out. Yeah,
and he was put in the perspective and I think
it was he was in the morning with Colon Dan
and he was saying that they have those two tiebreakers.
So Texans that just need to win this game with
the Chiefs. Yeah, and they have it. Okay, Well, fla
can happen this weekend. I'm feeling good. I'm just letting
(02:40:38):
it bubble. I'm letting it, I'm letting it simmer. I'm
not bringing it to a full boil. But I'm just
playing the.
Speaker 2 (02:40:43):
Scene for you, folks. Could the Texans win the AFC?
Speaker 3 (02:40:50):
The Patriots are major favorites, Broncos didn't look like world
beaters when they came in and and Davis Mills threw
like thirty passes in that game.
Speaker 2 (02:41:00):
I'm just saying. Am not saying it's gonna happen. I'm
saying it's feeling possible. All right, quick break here on
the Matt Thomas Show with the Ross Without Matt Thomas
because he's not here, We're gonna take quick break Ross
vir Real with you. Jonathan Allen is here. Uh, you
know what We're not playing, believe it or not. So
if you want to get in real quick you can
seven one three two one two five seven ninety is
(02:41:20):
the phone number. Final segment coming up next.
Speaker 3 (02:41:24):
Jonathan Allen will be happy to know man Chester City
have taken a one miller lead over Fulham. Okay, okay, okay,
you know what I'm gonna get you on a Premier
League ban landg win. You wanna come come root for winners? Baby, man,
I'm more of a lot of lega guy. But you
know who's your squad?
Speaker 2 (02:41:40):
I don't. I don't have a squad though I like
how I play better. Though I was always with a
I was always a Barcelona I mean I used to
watch Messi when he was there, Like I knew that
I was watching Messi is the greatest professional sports person
that I've ever seen in my life, like the best
at sports, what ever you want to call it. He
(02:42:01):
was better at his sports than anybody I've ever seen.
And I knew that, so I would watch be in sports.
I would record all the Barcelona games and I would
sit there and watch because I knew I was watching
something that was special and that would not last forever.
Speaker 17 (02:42:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:42:15):
I was always a messy guy playing back in the day.
I was always you know, you would you would be
cheating with Messi. Messi because I'm dribbling past everybody and
curling in left handed, left footed shots. You know, Ronaldo,
I didn't really like him, you know, I wasn't a
fan of his game.
Speaker 2 (02:42:30):
He's good Gareth Bale and Benzema and those are great
teams too. I used to watch the Real Madrid games
too because I was watching it. Look, I'm Messy is
better than Ronaldough, but Ronaldo was all time great too,
So yeah, I would record those games and watch. I mean,
this is why I'm sitting in this chair because I
love sports. I watched. I like watching all time great
(02:42:52):
special stuff that I know I'm not going to be
able to see for a long time. So AnyWho, I
was a Barcelona guy when Messi was there, and I
mean I kind of soft root for Barcelona. Real Madrid's
evil empire, but they're pretty darn good too. All right. Anyways,
Alex has been holding and wants to get on. So Alex,
what's up?
Speaker 19 (02:43:11):
You know, Russ You've had some weird ass Polone calls today.
People really digging and mining and trying to like, uh,
I don't know, man, Nobody even said he knew Naki,
So I was kind of disappointed or talked about like
the Arctic Wall, but what about planet See there was
so much meat on that bone and they just like
got hung up on patriotism. Colin Kaepernick, God, what the
(02:43:35):
hell was that? Anyway? Just to just to kind of.
Speaker 2 (02:43:40):
Wash that away.
Speaker 19 (02:43:41):
I'm thirty nine years old, I'm dating this girl. You
live in the Houston area?
Speaker 26 (02:43:45):
Can you can you shoot me a couple of cool
places that I could take her?
Speaker 1 (02:43:48):
Third time?
Speaker 16 (02:43:49):
Wow?
Speaker 2 (02:43:50):
Okay, hold on, let's let's talk about it. You don't
want to drink too much? Is that what you said?
Speaker 17 (02:43:55):
Yeah?
Speaker 19 (02:43:56):
We like nice things.
Speaker 2 (02:43:57):
We like going nice places. Okay, so you're looking you're
looking for like fine dining, nothing too fancy.
Speaker 16 (02:44:05):
What is this?
Speaker 2 (02:44:08):
Okay? What time? So do you want to go to
like a cocktail bar? Are you trying to look for
a restaurant?
Speaker 25 (02:44:13):
Like?
Speaker 2 (02:44:13):
What exactly are are you looking for? You want something
like some Mexican food?
Speaker 19 (02:44:18):
You want lauro' something like that. A hidden gym that
I don't know about, hidden gym that you don't know about.
Speaker 2 (02:44:24):
Oh man, I'm not hm I'm trying to think of
like a date place. Like there are some restaurants like
they are more like divy type places that I.
Speaker 3 (02:44:35):
What the one we saw in Netsu Longo over there,
the West Teimer uh Off Post Oak we went with
the Oh you're talking about the Conservatory. Oh it's not
the Conservative. Is it called the Conservatory? Yeah, it's called
the Conservatory and Gallery. Have you heard of that, Alex.
It's a place. It's kind of like a food court
and you can walk around and go a bunch of
different places. You can choose different foods. They have booze
(02:44:58):
and it's.
Speaker 2 (02:44:58):
Kind of cool to walk around, could you, Jonathan? They
also have I mean it's like Post Houston is kind
of like that. You have you you been a Post?
Speaker 23 (02:45:06):
No?
Speaker 2 (02:45:06):
Not yet, Okay, Yeah, it's a bunch of different restaurants
like they had that. I hope that it was an
Ethiopian whatever West African place that was in there. Oh
my god, it's going to change your life. That was
so good and go ahead, I appreciate it.
Speaker 19 (02:45:20):
One last thing, I've been saying this for about two
years now. I don't understand what the hang up is
or what what what's stopping y'all, But I would love
to watch y'all on YouTube or twitch or something. There's
another show, yeah, not gonna say which. My shift starts
at noon, so I wake up a little bit later
in the afternoon and I enjoy watching another show at
(02:45:43):
the beginning of.
Speaker 17 (02:45:44):
The day, and it's great. But whenever y'all come on,
I switch over to y'all.
Speaker 2 (02:45:48):
I wish that I could just watch y'all too. Man,
it's it would be great you.
Speaker 19 (02:45:54):
And Matt on TV Jonathan as well. Man, it needs
to happen, even if even if it's just like not
on Space City Home Network it was just something low budget.
I don't care we would.
Speaker 2 (02:46:05):
Watch it, though I would like to. And I'm honestly
not sure how much I'm allowed to divulge about that.
Let's let's just say there are technical roadblocks that we
are not sure we want to jump over here. That's
clearly the only way I can phrase it. It has
(02:46:26):
to do with the audio. With the audio, I would
love to have a I mean, we literally have cameras
on in here. They check you can check out our
good friends Adam and Adam on Space City Home Network.
We have the capability, we have the technology. Also, we
would have to hire another producer to work it, and
then you know you, you'd have to hire a couple
of staff to work on something like that as well.
Speaker 17 (02:46:47):
What Charlie doing.
Speaker 2 (02:46:49):
Charlie Polilo is not going to show up and produce
our our television. But uh that's a good no, thank you.
We just heard back from Charlie.
Speaker 19 (02:46:58):
There you go, all right, Ross, Well, I love the
show man, Love you guys, y'all have a good one man.
Speaker 2 (02:47:04):
All right, thank you, appreciate it. Alex, Alex, send me
a send me a d M on either Instagram or Twitter,
and I will get back to you with a list.
Because I have a couple of places. I also don't
want to give a bunch away a bunch of free plugs.
And I'm a gatekeeper, gatekeeper. I'm just kidding. It's all.
(02:47:25):
A good place is not everywhere. But no, no, you're
not in any circle. Jo kidding. I'm just kidding. I
am not. I am not a gatekeeper. I'm not. If
a place is good, I like it. But you know,
Matt Thomas getting mad when we put free plugs on this,
I don't want to plug a station. I'm actually legally
not supposed to. It's called plug. I'm not supposed to
(02:47:47):
legally plug a place and not get paid for it.
I can't do that. Not to say it would give
me underhanded payments or anything, but that wouldn't be bad.
But I also actually be very legal. Don't do that.
Thank you? All right? Anyways, Alex, Yeah, send me a
DM at sports RV on either Instagram or Twitter. I'll come.
I'll drum up a list of some places.
Speaker 3 (02:48:06):
I got some ideas for you if you're looking for
some nice restaurants around the Houston area. All right, well,
I guess on that note, that's gonna do it for
the Matt Thomas Show here on Sports.
Speaker 2 (02:48:18):
Talk seven ninety with Ross without Matt Thomas because he
wasn't here today. He'll be back tomorrow. Don't you worry
your pretty little heads about it. Tend to here tomorrow
on the Matt Thomas Show, where we'll probably get coach
you doka. I don't even know what the heck's going on.
Mattson's emails, I don't read them. So we got some
other fun stuff going on as well. He'll be back.
(02:48:39):
I will be back as well. Jonathan Allen will be here. Thanks,
so much to all of you for listening. Thanks so
much of those who called, tweeted, got involved in the show.
I do really appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (02:48:46):
Thanks to Chris Cordy for showing up reverse thanks to
the Adams for not showing up and not responding to
my text.
Speaker 2 (02:48:51):
They are coming up next to two o'clock. They are
called the A Team. Don't Go Anywhere
