Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross ten on
one of ah Town. Good morning, and welcome to a
Tuesday edition of The Matt Thomas Show. And Ross this
is Sports Talk seven ninety. I was always thinking about
(00:28):
a song where we always like to play with wins
and we'll play some songs a couple of times over
and over, because it's no, there's not an infinite number
of songs, but this kind of just fit. Last Night
feels Good wasn't one of those amazing, dominant, oh my gosh, games,
but it was a game that, as you said moments
ago for an on the air, the Rockets never worned out.
(00:49):
Dallas had a little lead second half, not much. The
talent over rules everything. Aman Thompson and Appera and Shngoon
were working assists to assist and then they flipped it
in the system to each other. Katie had a couple
of threes. Late Rockets lived without Jabari Smith's Last Night.
Rockets have now won four consecutive games. And Rossie, I
simply say to you, it feels good. It does feel
(01:12):
good song from nineteen ninety on the program. I like this.
We're getting there, We're getting there, We're working our we're
working our way back to modern times. Baby. I love it,
love the pick. And yes, as we were talking off air,
it's one of those things you know they call the
eye test, you can call it the gut test, Like
how confident are you and your team? We'll kind of
(01:33):
tell you in theory how great they are, And I
was My confidence was never shaken in the Rockets last
night against the Mavericks. I was like, they're gonna pull
this out. They're gonna win. It's fine. Even a couple
of years past, I'd be like, Okay, they're gonna try
to blow this game, Like they need to start making
some shots, they need to get their act together. I
was like, Yeah, they're gonna be fine. They got this guy,
Kevin Durant, he's pretty good. All Star Outrunchtin Gooon he's
(01:54):
pretty good as well. Iman Thompson was playing very well
last night. Is also so I wasn't My confidence was
not shaken, and they rewarded all of us Houston Rockets
fans with a victory. Yeah, some of the numbers were
not great. Three point shot for a team that entered
the game at forty five percent from distance, when only
eight of twenty nine again the Russian guys for to
(02:14):
do that twenty thirty from the free throw line. That
doesn't we would like that not to regress. But also,
who is the big culprit? Oh, you mean six to
eleven outprea shingoon? And are we shocked with that? It's
been a trend. Who is the second biggest culprits man Thompson?
Who are we shocked with that? Four and seven? So
those guys combined for ten of eighteen from the line.
(02:36):
Tigers can change their shooting stripes in the NBA, but
it's it can be rare, you're saying. I'll just say this.
Dallas is a decent team. They'd be a better team
if they had Anthony Davis and the fort and they
would be a really good team if Kyrie Irving was
able to go. Derek Cleveley, they were missing, they were wounded.
Even a guy like Dante Exum is a guy that
(02:56):
comes off the true scores for them. So, but the
Rockets won forty six percent from the floor. Hey, they
didn't have Javaris Junior. It's true, that is true. Rockets
win it there four and two after zero and two
start which two? Good man, you don't want to say
good losses because I was talking the Tari sent up
the game. You don't have an ugly win and a
good loss. That's the old standby phrase. Of course. Uh,
(03:17):
you had good losses against Oklahoma City detried not as
much because you can ugly. Yet thirty eight point six
from the field that game, if they'd have made a
couple easy bunnies, they would have won. Yep. But four
wins against Look the Mavericks. As long as Anthon Davis
is in on the lineup, it's not gonna be very good.
And Kyrie doesn't put him in the elite category. Uh,
first live look at the Cooper flag. Yes, Okay Athletic
(03:41):
scored a couple of buckets. Was taking Reed Shepherd off
the dribble. But a lot of the NBA has been
doing that well. I think Ema and Doka noticed that
because he put in Aaron Holliday for a long stort
of time in a game and a lot of times
when Reed Shepherd is on the floor, and it's Stu
observation by Gerard in the post game, and it is
true that Reed Shepherd is they put they used zone
when Reid is out there as well. Yeah, where they're
(04:03):
worried about his defense. So flying to me and the
guys from before us the morning show, we're talking about
this Cooper Fly could have probably used one more year
of maturation, maturation in the college game, just to kind
of get all the kinks out of him. He's young,
he's very talented. Uh, he was worthy of the first
overall pick. Yes, but he's gonna be a guy that's
(04:26):
gonna have to learn on the fly a little bit,
play probably more minutes he probably would want to as
an NBA player in his rookie season. The running point
at thirty four minutes. I will say this, and this
is kind of nice to finally say. Clay Thompson, I
believe his fifth all time in three pointers Maine in
the history of the NBA. Found correct on that. Okay,
he's completely washed. A non factor last night. And how
many times in our lifetime you and I Ross have
(04:46):
come on this radio and ship, oh man, Clay Thompson
wasn't a factor in a game in Houston, Texas. I'm zero.
I've been fearing Klay Thompson since I can remember him
being a Golden State Warrior. So it was nice to
not be super scared of Clay Thompson. He was even
pretty good for the Mavericks last year. Yeah, and he
had a big game answer Rockets last year, didn't he.
I think we're just knocking down a bunch of threes
(05:07):
if it's at least once a year. Yeah. So I
did ask some of my friends in the Dallas side,
I said, Hey, is this Clay and giving up? And
you know he's Clay works hard, he's putting the time. No,
he's just by the time, just as undefeated it always is.
He's had a cl injuries, Achilles injuries, I think. So
it's Yeah, he's thirty five and he's doesn't have the
luxury of being as tall and lengthy as Kevin Durant.
(05:29):
No no defense or whatsoever. And the shot is not there,
and he was seeing in some open looks. Mean the
Rockets were giving him some open looks. Yeah, one freight
from three points. I think the shots will fall for him.
But the athleticism is just it's completely gone from his
body due to all the injuries that he suffered. So
all right, so if you want to chime in on
the Rockets last night, I will say this, I really
hope now is what's the cliche term hope in one hand?
(05:51):
What's neither here the other? And stan which one fills
up first? I mean, we have to be realistic. Word,
how do I put this? Uh? Not the most not
the most feverish NBA town. Yeah, that's pretty good. Okay. Uh,
it's gonna have to take a serious two round playoff.
(06:15):
I mean and for almost I think multiple years, super run.
This team's gonna have to get to the Western Finals
to really get crazy multiple years. I'm sorry. Even the
James Harden great days with Chris Paul, those those crowds
were not even full until thirty minutes into the game,
you know, So you have that recent example. I'm not
going to go to your you know when when you
were the PA and the championship years to win, it
was really really really rocket right right right, And I
(06:37):
don't want it to get to that. I mean, I
wanted to get to that level. This was an NBA town,
but I don't want it to have to go all
the way just to get to that level. This was
not a baseball town until twenty fifteen ish, That's right,
That's right. So, uh, yeah, you gotta win in this town.
I will just say this and again take it for
what it's worth. You just we're just want friends hanging out.
I'm just trying to tell you about my great new
cardial I got on my on my Twitter account this morning.
(07:00):
It's a really fun team. So it's gonna be a really,
really good team. It's going to team that's probably gonna
be north of fifty wins, which is so funny because
I think the NBA naysayers whens soon as Van Vliet
went down, like, oh it's over now. That very I mean,
they don't have to win fifty to win a championship
because it's so super competitive in the West. They may
(07:20):
have to ultimately decide what they want to do with
the point guard position if they don't think Reids can
do it over the long term, but that's stuff down
the road. They do have Durant still a superstar, despite
the fact he didn't not shoot well last night. Ta
Resan has been a awesome six man started last night.
Alprin Shingoon wakes up with almost a triple double. Despite that,
sometimes you get frustrated by some of his performances. Josh
(07:42):
Coby's been suitable as an off guard, and then Aman
Thompson continues to be a guy that can play a
four or five different positions and has done a really
good job, been shot very well and actually got another
three point last night and had twenty seven points. I'm
going to tell you, Houston, Texas, if you are down
on the Texans and you are nervous about the future
of the Astros, there's a certain basketball team in this
(08:02):
town that wouldn't mind you putting your eyeballs on them.
You don't have to go buy season tickets. You don't
mean they like for you to do that. But my
point is this just to say, wake me up at
a certain time like Christmas time is always the cliched
NBA term. That's true. I think you're doing yourself at
disservice because it's a good basketball team. It's running through
the competition. Right now, it's fun and right now it
(08:23):
is we, of course, continue to have to use these caveats.
It's early in the season. They have the best offense
in the NBA offensive rating points per game, They are
the best. And the scary thing is, as you mentioned,
I would think we've used the words sloppy, plunky, disjointed,
so they haven't looked completely fluid. They turned the ball
over seventeen times again yesterday and gave up seventeen points.
(08:45):
Off of that, they're going to get even better. And
they're the number one offense in the NBA right now.
And some of that will come down because the three
point shooting I don't think is going to continue as
hot as it has. But as far as the actions
they get into and the shots they're going to take
and make and getting better chemistry, that's going to get
even better. So I would just say public of public
service announcement. If you are down on the Texans for
(09:06):
yet another reason. And by the way, I want to
make sure I mentioned I have amended the Texans will
never win a Super Bowl as long as mcnaire's own it.
It's going to be the Texans will never win a
Super Bowl as long as Nick Cassarki is running the
front office. So you're extinguishing their previous claim is gone.
I think you're recanting. I think I'm allowed to do
that because you're canting. It's really the only decisions they
(09:27):
have to make as an owner, to their general managers
and their coaches. Those are the two most important things
I know. So if you if you make bad decisions there,
it's going to cost you. I think both guys are safe.
I mean I think I know if a fact, that
Miko is safe. I think Casario is going to have
one more goal around at this I think the team
doesn't make the playoffs, it will be some soul searching
(09:47):
in that building over there energy, But I think he'll
be given one more draft to go fix some things
and get more aggressive and fre agency and certainly address
the offensive line in the draft. But I feel like
we're a broken record on that. We'll get to that.
We will get to. Another survey is out about the
top free agents in baseball. It's almost like they're just
intentionally sending me emails to piss me off. And frankly,
(10:08):
Ross's belly is getting bigger as every one of these
emails comes to us. An NBA owner is being sued
and it has to do with Kawhi Leonard. Oh yeah,
this is a mess. That is a hot mess on that.
We have a gut feelings coming up today at eleven thirty.
The News at noon is coming up also ross all
(10:29):
of the NFL. Rewind at one twenty, I'm gonna hang
out with you tw one o'clock then head off with
the Rockets to a Memphis. So we want you to
be a part of the radio program. How do you
do it? You simply say, hey, I got something to
tell Matt and Ross. It could be SPORTSWA, it could
be out of Sports Readier. We don't care. It's seven
one three two one two five seven ninety seven one
three two one two five seven nine zero. If you
want to follow us on Twitter, we would love for
(10:50):
you to do that at Sports MT at Sports RV.
Actually you can't follow my Twitter account because it's been compromised. Yeah,
it looks like you picked up a new Mercedes. Yes,
that was the joke, running joke this morning. Everybody's sending
me the tweet of Matt Thomas getting nineteen thousand dollars
out of the crypto bag and getting a new car.
You're welcome, big love to my crypto coach, whatever her
(11:13):
name is. Can't they find this person? So I said,
tie the account to that. I sent another email today
with two photos on to whoever it is they. I
don't think they particularly care. I sent them two photos
of two tweets that I did not send. I said,
I have been hacked. Those are not my tweets. This
(11:34):
should be cut and dry. But apparently from what people
have told me is that, first of all, Twitter, I
think doesn't really care that it's been compromised. Secondly, there's
so many people that are getting hacked ross that I'm
on a list of probably fifteen thousand deep that I
have to get my account fixed up again. So if
anybody has any friends at work at Twitter, if there's
such a thing as at Twitter that works, you know,
(11:58):
you should send a new and free four MT on
your Twitter account. Get that, get that, get that Twitter. No, honestly,
it's it's a it's a form we want. Shame on
you situation for me, the third time you've been hacked,
shame on me. You should add two factor so you're
you're flat out saying this is my fault, shame on me.
If if you want to say that's fine, you get
(12:19):
Look you're looking like you're mad at me for a
little man. I'm gonna do it from now. Yeah, I'm
gonna get I'm gonna you know what, you know what,
it's shame on me. I should have set you up
with some two factor authentication. My password, my password is
very difficult I thought you did. Yeah, I'll do it
from now. I mean I have on my last It's
price is right one, two three, isn't it? Bob Barker
r I P six. I'm gonna set you up a
(12:41):
two factor. But I do feel some responsibility I said this.
I'm sorry. I use my wave Busters account to see
what's going on. But ultimately, if this takes a week
or a month, I'm gonna be fine. I I but
I want to get a going because I want to
be able to promote the show and tosh some pictures
and talk about stuff with you guys. But I'm just
not gonna go off of waight Busters because that's its
pristine count just for those of us that are trying
(13:02):
to stop the damning Yeah, pristina count seven one, three, two, two, five, seven,
ten to fifteen of The Matt Thomas Show with Ross
with the word right here for Citter pro painter. Shout
out to Calvin Sampson winning eight hundred college basketball games yesterday,
If not win eight hundred and one game, he won
(13:23):
the eight hundredth of his career. And now is that
with the ones that were vacated taking off? How does
that work? Are there vacated wins at Indiana? Is that
what it is? I'm asking, Why are you looking at
me like that? It's an honest question. Well, first of all,
I don't know if they were vacated. Okay, but I
(13:43):
I see your tone. I'm asking an honest question. No,
you're not why it wasn't. That wasn't one of the
things that crossed my mind at all under any circumstances.
In my mind, your mind is demented. Okay. Did he
not get wins vacated? I'm not sure. I don't. No,
he had multiple runs within with the NCAA. I'm just asking.
And by the way, all the things he got in
(14:04):
trouble for league that is correct, but at the time
they weren't. So I'm just asking if there was anything vacated.
By the way. Geez, yeah, wait, we know what your
tenor was and you're just mean. By the way, quick
check of the college basketball scoreboard yesterday. Let me just
give you some finals. Would you like some finals? Saint
John's beat Kinnipiac one O eight seventy four. Okay, Houston,
(14:25):
as I mentioned, winning over Lehigh seventy five to fifty seven.
Lee High School, Yukon over New Haven seventy nine to
fifty five, Arkansas beating Southern one O nine seventy seven,
UH North Carolina and a tussle with Central Arkansas in
ninety four fifty four. Alabama beat North Dakota ninety one
sixty two. I always stay beat Fairleigh Dickinson eighty eight seventy,
(14:49):
Kansas beat Doug Gottlieb's Green Bay Squad ninety four fifty one,
Wisconsin over Campbell ninety six to sixty four. Michigan beat
the University Oakland won twenty one to seventy. You scored
one hundred and twenty one points and forty miles. My
got you run up and down the court. Illinois put
up one hundred and thirteen to Jackson State's fifty five,
(15:14):
Louisville one hundred and four points to South Carolina State's
forty five. A local game of interest TSU drop one
to Gonzaga last night, Oh ninety eight forty three. Did
they have to go to Spokane for that ass whoopings
that's called getting a paycheck? They had zero problem. That
is the middle of nowhere. Yeah, Well, if you're getting
a hundred thousand dollars, you'll do it, get your ten
(15:36):
to get up there and like mirror it up there
and take the right eye back. Well, Texas is making
their debut on ESPN and the dig Vive Town Classic today. Yes,
they're playing some private school from North Carolina. Yeah, I
can't remember what is it? Is it like you in
c Wilmington or something like that lines up to nine
and a half. Yesterday it was seven and a half. Now,
(15:58):
will you be the only Houstonian to watch that game?
Probably I will be watching the game. And you know,
college basketball it was kind of hard to stay into
year after year. I don't know who's on the team.
I know Kenda Weaver is there. I know maybe like
one or two other players. If it give me a
second to think about it. There's so many trends, Like
(16:18):
five people in the transfer portal came in, so I'll
learn about the team tonight. Here's the thing about college basketball,
and as much as I love college basketball the pageantry,
it is even more of a secon sport that's split
up among its fan bases. A lot of people won't
even stare at a basketball game until after the bowl
season is done. And frankly, ninety percent of anybody that's
(16:41):
a basketball fan of a particular school, with exception of
maybe Kentucky and Kansas and a few others, doesn't even
bother paying attention to school until the march Man his
bracket is announced, and then it became all always been
this diehard fan. Yeah, so that's just it's what college
basketball is. College it is the greatest one month in sports,
but the other five months or rather boring from Matsvoka
(17:03):
ty Tis who's this brother? Well, I don't think Craig
Way says it that way? Is that what he says
when he introduced m No, I don't think he's the
name like you did. Seven footer from Lithuania. I'm feeling good,
let's go. Oh yeah, Tremon Mark is still there. I
remember that Tremont Mark, former Houston Cougar, a Cougar legend,
Tremont Mark. That was five schools to go for him. Yeah.
(17:27):
I don't know any of these guys. For them, I
know like three of these guys. All right, Well I'll
learn tonight when they're getting their asked. What by Duke
Manual Sharp twenty four Last Night models Uzan twelve points,
Joseph Tugo, Jojo eleven points. Cougar shot forty three percent
for the game. Yo, they got this guy from the
Ivory Coast, Lithuania, England. This is international school. Nobody wants
to go to Austin shut The traffic is too bad.
(17:49):
All right, don't you wait? Watch out now, Sean Milly,
gon't build a powerhouse. You'll be scared. That's fine. You can't.
You can't fix thirty five in Germany. You can't fix I.
You can't fix I thirty five. I have a German,
a Lithuania, A dude from England. Who's the best baller
from England? Oh, I can't even name one, but yeah,
So this will conclude our college basketball talk for the
(18:09):
conversation for probably today the next time we're all in
on Longhorn basketball this year, Maddie, I don't think so. Okay,
Well it's just me, I guess I mean we can
do that. No, it's okay. I I don't mind Texas
b Houston in a first round matchup in a fifteen
verse two big game against Duke, and then the next
three games Lafayette, Fairley, Dickinson, Kansas City, and writer As.
The next four, well, we've got any powerhouse known as
(18:29):
Townsend on the next on the schedule. Next, why would
you schedule the ass whooping versus Duke in the opener?
Can't you play Lafayette and fairly? Dickinson and the boys?
Do you think there's a financial Yeah, the Dicky v Invitational.
They get some cash at worst case it helps your schedule.
Second one, they probably don't pay for the trip, right.
Would you think it's gotta be a real confidence builder.
(18:50):
You'll be fine. You just got to be fine. All
these guys on the roster. By the way, they have
a dollar sign icon mean me and go get money,
you think, and it goes to open indoors nil marketplace. Yeah,
most websites, I should say all, but a lot of
Division one websites. Matter of fact, one of the schools
Carly was being recruited by for volleyball had dollar signs
(19:11):
next to the girls next you know, and again what
they were getting any I don't know. But point being is,
you could if you saw athlete you wanted to endorse,
you could hit the dollar sign and you could connect
not directly through the school, but through the collective, which
is kind of a subgroup of the school mates. Vokatayas
that's my dog. Oh he just came from Florid Atlantic
born in Lithuania. I'm ready. Why do you feel like
(19:34):
the need to learn about your team live on the radio.
I'm sorry, go ahead. What are we doing? What were
we talking about last time? For a break? Yeah? We
the show has come to a crashing halt. What do
you mean everybody didn't want to talk Longhorn basketball? List
the whinny in transfers from FAU. I watched this. That's
how we break down like nobody's business. Watch this. I'm
going to I came. This is a serious face. I'm
(19:57):
going to openly ask for one person that listens to
our shut up, just stay let's stay with me on this.
One person that listens to the show on a semi
regular basis. Orry, maybe you listen every day to call
in and let's talk Texas basketball. One person and you
get one segment. I have asked a lot of our audience.
(20:19):
I've asked you to support our sponsors. I've asked you
to listen to our show. I've asked you to go
to our events. I've asked you to support charities. This
is perhaps the greatest charitable thing I've asked for you. Please,
please please call Ross right now with any sort of
Texas basketball question. And it can't be involved past players.
It must be on the current state of affairs. Oh,
we can't talk about Brian Bodeker or Kevin Durant and
(20:43):
Brad Buckman. None of those people. Kenton Paulino, No, okay,
is it BJ Tyter?
Speaker 2 (20:48):
No?
Speaker 1 (20:49):
It was PJ. TUCKERJ No. PJ Tucker would be one.
Oh TJ FORDA. I was thinking about TJ. Ford. By
the way, Manus Votetias is his major is physical culture
in sports. So one person out of potentially six million
people in our metropolitan area, can you call in the
next segment and talk some Texas basketball? I mean legitimate,
(21:11):
not like self serving, not a goofy, I mean a legitimate,
like man that's good insight kind of call. Seven one
three two one two five seven ninety seven one three
two one two five seven ninety. Welcome back to Longhorned
basketball Talk here on sports Talk seven ninety. Phone lines
(21:32):
are lighting up. People wanted to get in talk lies.
So let me let me rephrase then, so stay with
me in this, Okay, go ahead? Seven one three two
one two five seven ninety Call literally with anything you
want to talk about literally anything, okay, anything like your
(21:54):
mother's pumpkin bread recipe. Ooh she's not giving that away lately. Well,
the key is a lot of butter a basketball, Rockets, basketball,
Texas trade deadline? Yes, how to fix a flat tire?
What's the perfectly get you on that? What's a perfect
gift for your wife this holiday season? I so like
I say, go to set these fine jelry. But literally,
(22:16):
anybody call with anything you want talk about some Rockets,
ball Aman Thompson, somebody's sitting a I'll call in with
the Google AI response and they ask Google AI about
the Longe worn season. You know what you can do?
You can actually ask questions to Google eye and just
recite them back to us. That's true. That'd be great radio.
(22:37):
All right, So let's get let me get We'll go
back to the rock to a minute. But it is
the trade deadline day in the NFL, Yes it is.
We had another trade just made and the the Jaguars
have traded for Jacoby Myers, a wide receiver from the Raiders.
Really he had been wanting a trade. So that'll be
(22:57):
someone to keep an eye on, all right. Texans are
not gonna be trading for a wide receiver? Is it? Now?
You are a battle red yes, red Ross? Yes? Is
it malpractice if the Texans do not go get alignment
by today's deadline? Malpractice, a disservice injustice, whatever you want
(23:20):
to say. Um, how long is Titus Howard gonna be out?
He's got a concussion? Right, Yeah, my guess is he's out.
My guess is CJ. Strata's out at least this week.
I but even if Titus Howard was available, I mean,
you're don't you want depth? Don't you want somebody that
you feel a little bit more secure than having a
road take. I'm gonna call it malpractice because I don't
(23:42):
know what the markets are. And Casario doesn't like trading
Way picks for players. He likes trading Way picks for
other picks. Okay, He's like, uh, I got a stake,
I'll trade you for two Hamburgers. Because here's the thing.
When it's trade deadline in baseball, we have so many people,
granted maybe just because we have a larger baseball audience,
we have so many people call and say, hey, Dana's
(24:03):
got to do something, or before that, its got to
be Uh, Jeff's got to do something. Yeah, but there's
no trade deadline is bigger in the NFL than it
used to be. Still nowhere close to baseball or basketball
for that matter. But there are diehards that say, look,
I love my team, I want them to be successful.
I would like for some I would like for them
(24:24):
to get better, and you, in theory, can get better
by making a trade. Now, I don't know what the
market is. You know, it's people don't sit around and
go what's the old line market out there? Yeah, Jacoby
Myers was for a fourth and a sixth, but that's
a that's a skill position player. It's harder for us
to judge that deal. Uh yeah, I don't know how
(24:44):
many offensive linemen have been traded. I can go look
look that up. The Ravens have traded for too defensive linemens.
So you think the general public that are the Texans
fans that got the energy stadium in the second quarter
are going to be the ones that are like, yeah,
I get it, Nick, there was anybody out there you try,
we appreciate you. I think they're checked out general public.
(25:04):
I don't know, are people banging the drums saying something
must be done this straight. I'm not getting a feeling either.
We never get that feeling. But I'm not huge on
the Texans Twitter streets. I'm not on huge anybody's Twitter
streets because I'm locked out. So hey, Grdian'll laugh my fault. Yes,
so oh go ahead? Hid it? There we're going. We're good. Yeah,
(25:26):
it's it's ahead. Where are you on that?
Speaker 3 (25:28):
Because you're posting pics of Mercedes benzes and I mean and.
Speaker 1 (25:33):
Not sponsors either. Don't click on the links from Matt
Thomas's Twitter account. I sent a second Twitter just unfollow
him to be safe. Stop. I sent a second request
by account of being hacked, and they've not responded.
Speaker 3 (25:46):
You guys neglected to mention that the Longhorn game is
here on seven ninety to talk about the game.
Speaker 1 (25:52):
You were like, I'm gonna watch it. I'm gonna watch
them like Ross, how about some blood that it's gonna
be right here on the car and that guy that's
not very good with him right? Yeah? Something I can't
remember his name. You want that just sounds got a
mouthful of chaw? How to get you out there? If
you want to? I love it. I think you do.
You would do a better job. I would love meeting,
but it's just it's a tough lesson. I'll let them
(26:13):
though your fourth string. It's three other people call in.
I will never get a basketball color job because I'm
not a former player, but that'd be a dream. Mm hmm.
You can talk to the game pretty well. You do it, hair,
Thank you, Matt. You're okay with it all right?
Speaker 4 (26:26):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (26:26):
Where are we going with this? Back to the trade deadline?
Thanks Gordy for the seven uety plug on that Texas
bad don't go out tonight with your friends and family, Well,
listen to Texas basketball instead. Yes, a good game. I
mean it's a good game.
Speaker 2 (26:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:35):
Why don't try to promote Texas versus nicol State or something?
See I they can cover the nine and a half?
Is that what it is coming down to that? Uh? Okay,
So I ask of you Texans fans if they don't
make a trade and don't improve their offensive line or
for that manner, go get maybe like a breeze hallway
from the New York Jet Topolitans. Is that a disservice
or do you say that Nicko's here in the back
of his mind's like you know, what Rah this season
(26:57):
wasn't meant to be because they're gonna have to put together.
They're ROSSI they're three and five right now, they're gonna
have to go seven and two. I think it's gonna
take at least ten wins to get to the playoffs
this year. I agree, and so note an a ain't
gonna cut it seven and two. We have to go
seven and two the rest of the weaponing. But that
(27:19):
schedules too with Kansas City, Buffalo two, Indianapolis's you just
laid out three losses minimum staying out there all right,
Jimmy and Tomball is calling it. It does not mention
what he wants to discuss. And for this matter, I
don't really care what we love Jimmy, Jimmy, it's literally,
what do you want to discuss with us? We'll be
ready to do it. James, I'm sorry about that, sure.
Speaker 5 (27:45):
Second off, you know.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
First no, no, you can't. Second you have to have it.
First off, First, my.
Speaker 5 (27:51):
First off was I was sorry you're locked out of Twitter.
Speaker 1 (27:53):
Yeah, thank you very much. I appreciate that.
Speaker 5 (27:55):
I mean, I kind of think it's funny, but I'm
still sorry. B Second off, I just wanted to talk
about that U of H football game on Saturday. You know,
U of H can't really get anybody to come to
the game.
Speaker 2 (28:08):
R're ranked correct.
Speaker 5 (28:10):
Honestly, man, I could have gone to the game with
offer three tickets, but ultimately I just, you know, I
just decided I'd rather stay home because home's more fun.
But anyway, just wanted to call in and offer you
a few condolences and hope next week's better for you.
Speaker 1 (28:25):
Thank you very much. So certainly a very inspiring call
from Jimmy. Great call, Jimmy, thank you. Jimmy first of
ball says I'm appreciate you, but he doesn't. He thinks
it's actually kind of funny, as he said, his own words,
not mine, and I'm locked out. And that number two
we had nobody in our building. Twenty five thousand strong.
He won, twenty five thousand, twenty five thousand announced accurate
(28:49):
for a ranked team. A beautiful Saturday, perfect weather it
was I wasn't here, but the weather was good, right,
And a massive enrollment, massive alumni base in the city.
So well, this just feel like a loaded question. If
we were to take the pie of blame. Okay, approximately
(29:10):
seventy percent of the Houstons three hundred and fifteen thousand
living alumni reside in the Greater Houston area about two
hundred and twenty thousand alumni. So if you add that
up with fifty thousand enrolled, that's two hundred and seventy thousand. Yes,
so it's one out of ten cows and the Actually
it's not true, for they were two hundred and sixty
nine thousand, nine ninety nine available because I was sure
out right, okay, but I would have been there. Yes,
(29:32):
I'm not in the stands, no, but I mean I
would have been there. So in the pie of blame,
I blame probably thirty percent of it on the student
body wasn't there. I mean they get they get in
for free, or you know, they got like an athletic past.
You know, like okay, you know, you get like one
hundred bucks for everything you possibly want. I blame I mean,
(29:57):
obviously the other seventy percent has to go to the
people that would give a damn about you of h football. Right,
I can't blend the general public. I'd like to be
able to say, come on you A and M graduate
of two thousand and six, or come on you horn
Frog graduate of nineteen ninety nine or you beler grad
of two thousand and two, but you don't care. And
I'm sad about that. I'm sad that college football in
(30:18):
Houston can't translate to people that don't have a direct
relationship with the school. That you just can't say, Look
because I've been talking. I talked about it last week.
You get twenty dollars tickets, you got, you got, you
got in to get in the building for twenty dollars
and fifteen cents. Now, I don't know about the parking situation,
and people have complained about that. I don't think it's great,
and they're working there. It's a it's a continuing process
(30:39):
to get that resolve somehow somewhere. Again, I don't that's
out of my frame of reference or knowledge. But to
literally get in the building of twenty bucks this was
and so you know again, people pay for parking and everything.
People pay to park downtown of go drinking. People pay
to park to go to the rodeo. People pay I
mean parking and take You could park somewhere and take
the light red. You could do that too. I mean
(31:01):
there are there is light relative for Rodio right next
to TD tds U Sam, So it's I mean, it's
just everybody had an excuse.
Speaker 2 (31:08):
You know.
Speaker 1 (31:09):
I had a great friend of mine who's a U
of HLUM and he's a die hard, and he's like, Matt,
we know we're a city of Houston. Eleven o'clock on
a beautiful Saturday, people are doing other things. I'm like, Okay,
that means five point three million people can do something else.
I can't get forty thousand people in my building. Can't.
Don't even comme in. I'll let me. Let me do
the heavy lifting on this. Steve staut of this. Sorry,
(31:30):
We're just we just can't. We just or The only
time we've ever been able to fill up TD east
U Stadium is the year that we went to the
Peach Bowl beat Louisville on national television play for the
conference championship game. We had a great crowd for the
Texas Tech game, which was awesome because I was definitely
afraid that the Red Raider fans were going to fill
the building up, and they had some fans there for sure,
(31:50):
But we had blue shirts that day and seventy five
percent of the stadium had blue shirts on. So if
you're a Red Raider fan, you're not putting the blue
shirt on. You're's not. I took a photo to prove
that I knew that we could do it. So it
basically comes down to, if you're a U of H fan,
you gotta have a halfway sexy opponent. If you don't
have something that has close to anything interesting, you're not
(32:11):
gonna go. So I'm sorry. I know the Big twelve
is good, but you can't rely on Texas Tech to
fill your building up. You just can't because TCU is
not gonna do it. Baylor's not gonna do it. Uh
maybe Texas Techs is the large public institution. But you,
I mean by you frankly would do it because b
why you travels very well. B why you probably travels
better than anybody else in the conference. Really. Oh yeah, well,
(32:33):
the first of all, the religious faith has a I mean,
you can get the LDS here in town to just
go to the game. Mormons are spread out. I didn't
know that well, I mean, what is it. It's got
to be a top five in terms of denomination ryan
of religion in the country. I think I don't know.
I don't know. I'm sold by power rankings together next week. No,
you you skipped the Rotten five last week, so you can't.
You're not getting a new listing. You did get three.
(32:53):
Three people called in and told you I did it
three different Rotten five and what them said, you put
the bills and bills in there. They're second confused. It
was on shrooms. But he was correct that I did
the segment. No, that's a lie. Ten forty six, it's
a Matt Thomas show. Ross got Feelings coming up in
forty five minutes here on seven ninety ten fifty two
(33:16):
The Am Here on Sports Talk seven ninety Matt Thomas
Show with Ross coming up at eleven thirty. We have
got feelings. I think I think we locked in one
from you last week. I think he gave one before
you left. I did, I did. I can't remember what
I was calling or something. I don't remember. I can't
(33:37):
remember either. Figured out we'll chick the archives. Yeah. By
the way, we'll have Amay Doka with us on Thursday
this week, Oh Thursday. Yeah, it helps out a little bit.
That sounds great. Wait, you just wellwed your teeth. That's
not true. I saw you do it. I didn't know.
I got a cut on my lip earlier from last week.
(34:00):
It's from Uh, we'll do with this on Thursday. That
sounds great. So are you doing Friday's launch pad? I
think I'm just doing Dad did yesterday. I'm doing Wednesday. Okay,
put me down for two weeks, baby, that's what I said. Yeah, Wednesday, Memphis, Friday,
San Antonio, Sunday Milwaukee. The NBA geography is san Antonio
at home. No, they're all in the road. Oh okay,
(34:21):
three share road games. So that's a big clash. It's
a group play game. It's a it's a strange court game.
Oh great. Hopefully Wendy plays like he did against Phoenix. Yes,
a off night for him as the Phoenix suns one one.
So uh, all right, we got that to get to
what else we got? Oh we have uh okay. So
(34:43):
I think people at the Athletic know about our bet.
I think they send me emails multiple times in a row.
You're speaking of our Kyle Tucker bet where you have
under seven and a half years and I have over
seven and a half. So they always say today's listing
(35:05):
on the Athletic story. And by the way, it's a
great piece. It's a great journalism. Our friend chandlah Ross
is a writer for the was that the Rockets game
last night. I saidhi to them, did you okay? So
they just they don't give you the A team scored
B team. They gave you the behind the scenes stuff,
which I always appreciate. They're great journalists. That's why the
whole thing was started. And then they got by by
(35:26):
The New York Times. And I don't know if they're
in it for the long term. I hope they. Hey,
they've listened this long. Hey, you don't have to say that.
What has it been ten years? You think I didn't
feel like ten. I'm gonna say six or seven? Okay.
So Kyle Tucker, the spring projection, hopefully it's a winter projection,
is much lower than the current spring projection nine years
(35:47):
so it's twenty sixteen. They launched January. Tucker is being
comped to the Wan Soto and the VLA Guerrero deals.
She said, I'm sorry you say that one more time.
Soto was seven hundred and sixty five million dollars. VLA
(36:10):
Garrow is five hundred million dollars. The deal. In the
article says that the Correro deal is it doesn't get
done I knew news is coming. What The Guerrero deal
is especially helpful as it removes a comparable bath from
his winter market, and set's a very sturdy baseline for
value in Tucker the deal that the Athletic has it at.
(36:38):
I appreciate you powering through that. That's very brave of you.
Ten years, three hundred and fifty million dollars, so I'm
going to be off by two years. What's that year about?
Ten three fifty? Whoa? Now if I'm not I mean,
I like cal Tucker. I hope he gets as much
money as possible because he's earned it. But I just
(37:00):
want the years to be limited, like seven seven for
two billion dollars. Let's go. He's twenty nine. Sorry, I mean, hey,
I'm be honest with you, and I've been very consistent
about this. I don't think you. I don't want to
pay ten ten year contracts anymore. Now for guys who
are twenty nine, I don't want to do it. I
can't do it. I can pay, I can buy out
arbitration years ross and you know, give to give the
(37:22):
Bobby Wood Junior Captain town type deals with the Kansley Rawls.
If you want to mega deal, that bad boy. I
can do that all day. I'm not. I'm not paying
for ten years for a guy who's a free agent
for the very first time. You're paying for a couple
of things. You're paying for the premium for the prime years,
knowing that you're going to lose on the back end.
You're also hoping that contracts and revenues go up and
(37:42):
contracts continue to inflate to where thirty million dollars a
year now is it as much in ten years to
where that's kind of a lower high end contract and
not as much as it is now? And so that's
what you're betting on, and you want to win, and
it's gonna cost you the premium to win. Well, the
only thing I got going for mere regretting the ten year,
(38:04):
seven hundred million dollars a deal to show you, O,
Tony right now, they're not regretting it. No, No, because
again that's deferred to. I believe the year twenty four
to thirty six, that's true. The only thing I'm hoping
for is there's a very limited base of people that
can do this three three or four teams. There's nobody
in there, not even the Cardinals. A great baseball organization,
are like, you know what, can we put this together? No,
you can't. The Braves aren't even thinking about this. They're
(38:27):
this workstop is just coming. These owners are gonna want
I mean, I mean, what is gonna be the big crucks?
Are they gonna want a full salary cap? Salary cap?
Dang will hide it either. And this is gonna be
the twenty five owners telling the Dodgers, you can't defer
this money like you've been deferring. You got to put
some money in the back. That has to happen that
you can't. They can't. They can't defer all the money
(38:50):
to where a high percentage of it comes off the
books towards luxury tags. And you know, they're also ridiculous,
they're all. You know, they're also going to do two,
which is gonna be a real sticking point. I think
us they're going to pool their local TV money together,
is what is what they're going to do. That's yeah,
that's because the Dodgers. The Dodgers want no part of that.
They're playing a different ball game. So the Dodgers are
(39:11):
getting this hilatiously large deal from a cable company. Meanwhile,
the Podreys didn't have anybody. Some major League Baseball is
producing their broadcast, and major League Baseball is selling Podrais television.
And they're also going to limit rosters only three Japanese
phenoms per roster. That effects three teams. I'm sure that'll
really make a difference maker. So Dodgers too many Japanese phenoms.
(39:34):
They're too good. These Japanese players are too good. They
can't pitch every other every days. No, to me, they're
not going to be unified. The owners are not gonna unified.
And that's what the that's what the players have a
chance to really dig in because they're going to say,
all of y'all have different agendas. This is it feels
(39:57):
like every time there's a baseball work work stoppage, we
said the same thing. The Miami Marlins have different interests
than the New York Yankees, the Cincinnti Reds have different
interests than the Los Angeles Dodgers. And at least in
the NFL and at least in the NBA, when those
owners get grumpy, they're a unified front. They're not gonna
be unified in baseball. And I'm telling you, if I'm
(40:17):
the cut out of the Rockies and I get fifty
dollars to broadcast my games, or as compared to the
Los Angeles Dodgers get one hundred million dollars. The Rockies
are gonna be like, we can't compete with this. So
are they're gonna pull the TV money together? Are they
going to force a salary cap. That's the easiest way
you can so you can salurny cap. It's by saying, hey,
the Dodgers spend all this money because they have it,
(40:39):
but if you put a threshold on them, no matter
how much money they're making from their outside TV deals,
you can only spend so much per season. That's how
you probably do it. The Dodgers have no interest in
giving the Rockies any TV money, but they would probably say, Okay,
if we need a salary cap, this to make sure
that we can at least stay even on one regard,
we can do that. This is gonna be interesting. It
(40:59):
is going to be long, exhaustive and frustrating. There's gonna
be big division between the owners and the players, but
also I think big division between the owners. Absolutely. Like
I said before, you've got the local television deals are
such a seismic difference between the habs and the have nots.
(41:21):
Even the astros get got screwed because AT and T said,
We're not gonna pay you anymore. Here's the network, here
are the cameras, here are the here's your Dirk TV deal.
You can have it. Eleven o'clock gout feelings in one
half hour on Sports Talk seven ninety I'm Tomas Show
with Ross Matt and Ross with eleven o four. We
(41:45):
did not give the proper attention to the Dallas Cowboys,
who lost last night to Arizona as the cardinal's nap
of five game losing streak. Whoa whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
what we had? The guy called yesterday, Cowboys, we're gonna
put up forty points. How can we?
Speaker 4 (42:03):
You know?
Speaker 1 (42:03):
The Texans are our little brother and farm system. Give
us Will Anderson fore, George Pickens, right, where's that guy?
Dak Prescott twenty four thirty nine for two hundred and
fifty yards a touchdown. I n T Cowboys were down
ninety percent of the game, got close a little bit
down the stretch. They let you Kobe Brissette beat them.
I mean, seriously, if you're a you're a Dallas Cowboy fan,
(42:25):
do you just want to be kicked in the testicles
repeatedly for like a half an hour? I mean one,
Larry Fitzgerald out there wasn't well Marvin Harrison Junior? Did
you see he had? Uh? Who was the was it?
Doron Bland? Who's the dB fella broke his ankles? Oh? Bland?
I think ye, yeah, Deron Bland. Marvin Harrison shook him
(42:48):
off like a bad habit. He broke his ankles. He
crossed him up like Alvint Allen Iverson. And the Cowboys
kept turning the ball over yesterday? Yeah, what at least
three turn of was that? I counted Javonte Williams turned
the ball over? I can't remember exactly. Three was five?
And I saw this? You got the Texans are three
and sick. Now they're four and what's the Texas record?
(43:10):
Three and five? Three and five? The Cowboys are three
five and one. Yes, out of tie on one has
television ratings that are in the seventies in terms of share,
One's agin them in the twenties. If you combined the
teams with the Cowboys offense and the Texans defense, you
did the best team in football probably that you would.
You know, the USFL back in the eighties merged teams.
Why can't the NFL do it? The the the Eagles
(43:33):
and the Steelers did and in the forties when World
War Two was happening, they became the steegles See, there
is a president for it. All we need is a
world World war. That's a bad idea. Nice rouss nice,
thank you, Joda. So you went to battle in their
football reference, Okay, I would not go in that direction.
(43:53):
But that's teachers. I mean, that's what happened. You were
talking about combining teams. Yeah, uh, Cowboys, that's crazy. You
think we're helpless here with Nick Cassario, Nicky c how
do you think Dallas fanfield Jerry Jones things. You had
Troy Aikman taking shots at him last night of the
broadcast apparently, by the way, I always thought Troy was
(44:16):
just okay. He has taken up his analysis up a notch.
I think he's given the zero f's factor now I
agree with it. I think he was measured probably in
his first ten years and want to step on toes
and I think ultimately Tom Brady will be that kind
of person. Brady's been getting better. I think. Yeah. I
like Tom. I I didn't think he was as bad
as people thought he was early on, and I think
(44:37):
he's steadily improving. Agree, I mean he was. He was
a little stiff at first. Anybody, anybody, Yeah, I'm sorry.
When this show started in twenty ten, God, Ross, Oh
you should have heard me talking like an ironing board. Lord.
One time you were on location and we went off
air and I was like, hello, it is Ross. This
(45:00):
we're off air. Back in a minute. You know. I
had a producer in Salt Lake City that was that way,
and so what I did to open him up is
I would write the introductions for the show each of
the three hours, and I would say, Hey, everybody, it's
one o'clock. It's the Matt Thomas show. Here on sports
we call ourselves hot Tickets seven hundred back then hot ticket. Yeah,
(45:22):
it was a bad, bad format. Sorry, And on the
show today, this, this, this, and this, and at the
very end it would be a jab at me. Now
here's a man who thinks, Stephen that Jerry Jones is
in the primate GM career. Matt Thomas. So it kind
of opened him up. He got you got used the microphone.
That's beautiful, man. I gave you. I told you very
(45:43):
early and I said, hey, if you ever hear anything
you don't like, feel free to take a jab at me.
Oh yeah, you've you know it quite well. You've been
very nurturing. You've carved a crew out of yourself into
Uh yeah, you probably you have some regrets and that's okay,
it's fine. We were doing good. Uh hey, hello, I'm
about to hit sixteen years y'all out there. Well, some
(46:05):
people couldn't see your your intro to your your tweet
about what the show's gonna be about. Yeah, I have
nothing to repost and everything. It's crazy. I've got his
more savans. What's happening? By the way, how about Twitter
and not even responding to me? By the way, I
had a friend in front of the show. Jay listens
and sends me emails all the time. He says, why
don't you get the rockets to tweet at Twitter? Would
that make a difference? Maybe you know the social team.
(46:29):
I do know the social team, and they've got how
many Twitter followers or rockets have millions? At least right
four or five million.
Speaker 2 (46:35):
So.
Speaker 1 (46:37):
I gotta have it. I gotta have a serious heart
to heart with the social team and think I can
do it. Hashteg free mister Texas, Oh that's three point
one million. Don't even see. You're just trying to make
me angry and it works every time. What if I
got a new account and called myself mister tex Yeah,
you should do that and keep that account with me
as aunt with a cowboy hat on. So you don't
own a cowboy hat? Do you own boots? No? Or no?
(47:01):
Butt beckle butt butt becklele belt buckle. No, I'm not
going honkey talk. Yeah, yeah, you're not, mister Texas. Yeah.
I'll be in San Antonio on Wednesday and on Thursday
and Friday, not eating in chilat As Orally's, but eating
great text mex just tacos. No, that's right, the cheap
(47:25):
piece of meat that became overpriced due to marketing. Go
tell Mama Nap about that man waiting for Mamma even
knows she knows skirt steak was cheap. Tell the story.
My dad and his live with his grandma and she
was the greatest cook ever lived in our family. And
he said, why don't we eat Fagita's Grandma and she said,
because we're broke, but we're not that broke.
Speaker 2 (47:45):
Oh.
Speaker 1 (47:46):
But now it's it's like there are some restaurants I
won't mention where they are that you go there. Oh yeah,
it's like you look at the price, it's like it's
like a quarter quarter pound, not a half. Usually, when
Fidus first came around, everybody used to eat a half
pound individually. Now it's a quarter pound because the half
pound is like fifty dollars. Yeah, it's ridiculous. I don't care.
I don't need fifty hours worth of cilantro flavored rice
(48:07):
and beans and your tortillas that you get you get
all mad at when I asked for a second round
of What about Tomalleys? You like ma Leves? No, No,
those are actually originated in the valley. Say he's not
mister Texas Valley. Go ahead and say it. And there.
That's like you gone there and then you spit at
their food. I like Taketo's, Oh Keto, it's gonna be nice.
(48:31):
Let's move. You're not. I I'm nice every day on
this show, believe it or not. Not not not hiding
a head, not one hundred times not not not. Oh man, hey, Hey,
cowboy fan, Seriously, you can that guy call what was
his name? I don't remember. I think it was Skeeter. Uh,
(48:53):
you let Yourcoby Brissette beat you, Jacobe. Jacoby is bawling.
He the sneak. He got three touchdowns. Do he ever
beat the Texans as a member of the Colts? Yes?
Do you beat the no as a Patriots? Of playoffs?
Was it a playoff game? Don't you copt started? Or
was it a regular season It was a big regular
season game. I think we would have known it if
(49:15):
Brissett would have been this in account, been him in
a playoff game? All right, Oh, I'll look it up.
But you know, he's carved out a nice little NFL career.
He knows who he is. His brain isn't scrambled like
eggs because of being hit too many times. Yeah, he's
he's like in the backup backup Hall of Fame. Who
is in a backup Hall of Fame? Cole McCoy, Gary Kubiak,
(49:36):
Nick Foles, Gary Kubiak. But when I think about it,
when I think he's Keenum, hold on, when I think
of backup quarterbacks, I don't. I think attendance is only
half the great the limited times you get out there,
have you done something special? Brissette would be in that group.
(49:58):
Would Chase Daniel be in the Kase Keenum Case Keenum?
Maybe in that Chase Daniel Chase Daniel, Right, he's an
all time backup because he just never played. Okay, fifty million,
that doesn't really count that. I'm talking about guys backups
why stuff? Yeah's not necessarily. Would Steve Berline back in
the day. Oh, would Jason Garrett be in the backup
(50:20):
Hall of Fame?
Speaker 4 (50:20):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (50:21):
I think Nick Foles count qualifies that. Jonathan Allens, Yeah,
he won a Super Bowl? Yeah, then that would be
what's his name, Jeff Hosteler, Hosteler backing up Phil Simms
Super Bowl?
Speaker 2 (50:29):
Right?
Speaker 1 (50:30):
Yeah? Who else has been a backup quarterback that really
has kicked some ass? Oliver Luck? No, Hey, Shawn Salisbury
had some big games? Sean did Sean did okay for himself?
Speaker 5 (50:42):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (50:46):
Davis Mills, No, you'll see that Sunday. Jake Delom I
think and more. Jake Glom is more of a starter
with the Panthers. Anything else wasn't uh, which he wouldn't
(51:07):
call Kurt Warner. That just John You unitis, the backup
to somebody. Yeah, but but he got the I mean
that'd be like calling Tom Brady a backup to Drew Blodwell.
Was he was the greatest backup. But I mean the
greatest backup then. But but but when I say the
greatest backup going back to his normal spot as a backup,
Steve Young doesn't count then, No, Steve Young was a
Hall of Famer because of his wife. Fitzpatrick, Uh, Fitzmagic
(51:27):
certainly would be in the mix. I mean he did
get a couple of starting opportunities. One year one in Buffalo,
big contract. I made a lot of money. I mean
there's some commercials. Teddy Bridgewater comes in as the backup.
Teddy Bridgewater is a good example. Uh who else would
be a good example of a backup? Been around forever,
He's called on two or three times. Oh you know what,
I got one for Andy Dalton. Oh, I was just
(51:49):
thinking that back entire life started years with the Bengals. Yeah,
but the thing but I think he's spent the last
nine years a backup with like six different teams. Yeah,
but he was starter for several years with the Bengals
before they finally like went very good and went very
good though. Seven one three two one two five seven
ninety seven one three two one two five seven ninety
It's Matt and Ross and we are with you today
(52:10):
until two pm. Seven one three two one two five
seven nine. We got gup fillings coming up at bottom
of the hour where you get to make your predictions.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety All right,
seven one three two one two five seven. We got
a lot of you trying to give examples. When I
(52:31):
think of backup quarterbacks, I think of guys that would
be starters less than three years in the NFL. Okay,
that have always been right place, right time. Now, maybe
I guess Andy Dalt would not be a how many
years did he starting in Cincinnati? Nine? He's just a
(52:51):
nine year starter. Yeah, remember they were they were trying
to convince themselves he was good forever. Wow, maybe there's
no such thing. And that was That was the Marvin Lewis.
It was the Marvin Lewis and Andy Dalton Blair era. Well,
now it's just they can't stop a nosebla nine and
seven every year. No, it looks like they went ten
and six ten five. I guess the greatest example would
(53:15):
be I mean not the greatest, but a good example.
What I'm speaking of is Case Skeem. Case started less
than three years of his NFL career. Okay, well, would
you say what ninety percent of your appearances and were
as a backup? Would that be fair to say eighty
something like that? Seventy five? I mean, like I got
something in the line here, like I'm gonna get to
Travis here because I'm Travis, are gonna prove my point
(53:35):
a little bit on this, Travis, good morning to you peddlers. Yes, sir,
Doug william was seller. Now now see but Travis, Doug Williams,
as you know, because you sound like your wise football man,
was a long time starter for the Buccaneer. You do
the dishes, Yeah, yeah, okay, good, Yeah. I mean he
(54:01):
was a backup. Yes, I understand that. But when I
think of Doug Williams, I think of as two things.
One a long time Buccaneer quarterback and a guy that
left to go to play in the USFL then came
back as a backup. But I'm talking about the true
epitome of it, and it is not terrible. Thank you, Travis,
With her phone call just never was never considered. QB
(54:21):
one regularly five year starter for the Buccaneers and then
yeah in eighty from eighty eighty three eighty forty five,
he was usfl okay and then he came back to
him was the backup in Washington, but then won a
Super Bowl. Yeah, that's a great backup role. I mean,
that's that's great backup performances. Like who Like when you
(54:42):
look at a depth chart, you never saw this guy
on the first line, but he was always in the
second line, and he wind up happening on a little
bit here and there. I think it's gotta be maybe
it is Nick Foles. It could be Nick Foles because
he was only a well, no that he was a
full time start. I forgot about it. I wouldn't even
use the guy. I wouldn't even use the guy that's
playing this year, that's playing well for two different teams
or at least dead. I wouldn't even use And I
hate to say this to you, Chris, but Chris, I
(55:04):
think if Joe Flacco as a starter in the NFL
for the Baltimore Ravens, Chris, do you want to fight
me on this?
Speaker 6 (55:10):
What I'll say is between him and Foles. They they
actually do have Super Bowl rings and they were backups
quite a while. I mean, wouldn't that actually the fact
that you want a championship?
Speaker 1 (55:22):
Nick Foles has a statue.
Speaker 6 (55:24):
Outside of their stadiums as a backup because of one play?
Speaker 1 (55:27):
Come on, it's true. Wait, he does have a statue
outside of the Eagle Stadium. I didn't know it, does
Nick Foles? Yeah? Nicks to Ron Jowarski and know over Montgomery,
I had no idea about that that. I think he's making.
Speaker 6 (55:38):
That up, and I think they were talking about it.
Speaker 1 (55:43):
You sold it as a truth, Chris. Come on, now
he'd be back counts.
Speaker 2 (55:47):
Right, that's true.
Speaker 1 (55:48):
Hey, you know sold it. Let me tell you some Chris.
When a lot of people I sell it very well.
Apparently they're hm, is this real or fake? Bud light statue?
Philly Special State at you? Maybe he's Maybe Chris was
telling the truth. Look to me, Jason Garrett's a great
example of that. I don't I think Nick Foles might
(56:09):
have to be the ghost he started two years. Nick
Foles would be a great example. He started a full
year basically with the with the Saint Louis Rams, and
then that year he won the Super Bowl. He was
the backup to Carson Wentz, right, and Carson Wentz got
hurt and then went on and won the Super Bowl. Yep, yeah,
(56:30):
I'm going with case Keenum. I'm going with uh, Nick Foles,
Jason Garrett's on my short list, and of course the
great Texan backup Tony Banks. Tell you what Tony Banks now, Now,
Tony Banks did start for the Rams for a couple
(56:54):
of years, I want to say, but he basically lived
his life as an NFL backup quarterback right somewhere it
was St. Louis? Was it anywhere else too? I'm trying
to think of. Let me get to uh Woody here
online two is this so high Woodrow Woodie Baltimore. You're
(57:14):
there's only one, guys.
Speaker 5 (57:16):
You missed it, the only one in the the greatest all.
Speaker 1 (57:19):
Time backup quarterback Don Morral of the Miami.
Speaker 7 (57:22):
Dolphins, Bob Greasey's backup.
Speaker 1 (57:26):
Yeah, Matt, it's it's not Don Morral, it's Earl Moral. Yeah,
Donna's second Donn is his second cousin. Yeah, yeah, I
know You're you sold it on Don Morrils. So stay
with you, stay true to it Woody, we'll see you later. Thanks,
it's good. It's a good point back of quarterback down.
(57:47):
But that's that's basically your Doug Williams. But that was
it wasn't he Earl Morrel was in the Uh, yeah,
that's what I was thinking of when it was I
was trying to think of Earl Moral when I was
thinking of United. Weren't they on the same team in
the Baltimore Courts Colts and Earl morrele he won the
MVP in sixty eight. But he's talking about Earl Morral
backing up Don Greasy in Bob Greasey Earl Morral, but
he he was the backup to UNITEDS or something like
(58:09):
that too, right, and United got her. So maybe maybe
it's an Earl Morral reward or his brother Don he's
the OG. That's great, you guys are forgetting I can't
believe you didn't talk about Don Morrel Don Morrel Morrel's
beef barn down in WESTA. You're getting out somebody for
forgetting somebody and you can't even get their name right. Eyeah? Yeah,
(58:29):
good times. No, I actually knew I was thinking of
Earl more I just didn't. I didn't know how many
how many games did he started in the seventy two season.
In seventy two he started nine games. Yeah, because that
was the perfect season for the UH for the Miami Dolphins.
Okay at thirty eight years old. Yeah, I think if
guys are like forty something that backed up over there, mean,
(58:50):
what like Vinnie testa Verdi. Yeah, well testa Verty started
a lot in his NFL career. I mean he started
with Cleveland, he started with the Jets, he started with
the Buccaneers. He was a prolific backup, though, did you did?
Part part of being a great backup is being able
to stay a backup for as long as he was.
My case came them. I mean, I think Case is
not retired. I think he's still activist on the injured
(59:11):
lest I think, but he's I think he's still active
on a football team. Wait, Case, I think now he's
still in the league. I think, so let's see, Oh
he's he's with the Bears. Yes, I knew that. It's
just real, it's not fake. He's not on the practice squad.
I don't think a player coach. I don't think he's
(59:32):
suiting up. I think he's doing color commentary. I think
he's doing Suldent reporting. He's got a parabolic micael. If
he's the fourth string quarterback and also on the sideline
one year, three million dollar deal, he'll be a great
analyst if he wants to. I think he's going to
being a coach, but I think he'd be a great
tell the third string behind Tyson Bagent. Who Tyson? But
he came out for a game like last year. Did
any of you I know the answer this is no,
(59:53):
But did some of you see what Chicago did is
Cincinnnie on Sunday. They scored a touchdown with forty second
left to go in the game. All since I need
to do was prevent something from not happening, and they
didn't prevent it. And Chase Brown was calling out the
defense afterwards. You see that. Yeah, he's at his locker
room saying, finish the bleeping game. That was bad. It
(01:00:15):
was pretty bad bad. He's right, though, I hope he
doesn't get benched my fantasy teams. You should give up
on your fantasy team. No, No, the work league. I
just lost some two and seven. That one's done. But
I'm gonna make the playoffs in two of the league.
So I've never said this before in the history of
you and I being the same football league. I have
a five game lead on you. I am the Colt
(01:00:36):
and you are the Texans. That's fine, suck. We gotta
win out to make the playoffs now, So I don't
think it's gonna work out, but we're gonna try. We're
gonna try our damn justs We're hitting the waivers hard
this week. Man, all right, seven starting, starting, Bam Knight
and Woody Marks didn't work out for us. Woody Marks, Yeah,
I like him. Durable times is tough, working hard, but
not an RB one times is tough. Yeah, thanks, madam Aware.
(01:00:58):
I don't want them to. I just wanted to. I
just wanted to further aggravate you. I appreciate it's working well.
Ladies and gentlemen. It's time for you to make some
gut feelings. This is this half hour of the show
you enjoyed because we get to make some sports predictions.
I wait, I made one yesterday that I will not
necessarily double down, but I'll actually move it over to
the gut feeling category about the Texans the rest of

illegal border crossings at an all time low because Donald
Trump and Senator John Cornyn have been fighting side by

This Thomas, you only got a good feeling.
Speaker 1 (01:06:48):
This is their gut feeling on the Matt Thomas Show.
All right, last week, I was alf on a Tuesday
because I was doing the college schedule for a week,
and which means I think I called in with one prediction.
You and Jonathan had to take over. Now you didn't
do the Rotten five. I have proof of that because
I got a great email from a listener of ours
(01:07:11):
that listen to your Live Wire and he says the following,
It's from Robert Ross and under the Rotten five. Last week,
I was highly disappointed because I knew the Saints would
be in the Rotten five and we would hear the
Chris Gordy Cajun Crawfis drop say the shaman Ross. Ha ha,
that's from Robert. So Robert out you. Robert, You're a
(01:07:32):
snitch and nobody likes you. I'm going to reply to him.
Thanks for the honesty. We don't get enough honesty on
this show. Seven one three two one two five seven
ninety seven one three two, one two five seven ninety
How did you guys do last week in your gut feelings? Well,
let's go with uh, well, your gut feeling Oh, I
forgot about this is random? No NFL games at nine
(01:07:53):
pm next year. Yeah, stay with that. We'll see, we'll
come check back that next year. I mean there's any chan,
there's any chan will happened to probably be on the
Week one, like a doubleheader. I said that the Texans
would defeat the Broncos twenty three to nineteen. I would
have been right if CJ. Shreud weren't knocked out by dirty,
reckless hits. It was Denver Broncos, clean play. That's fine.
(01:08:16):
Uh so the Texans did not beat the Broncos. I
was also off on this. I said Dodgers in six.
I was with the Dodgers in seven. You know what
you get more credit is I want to I think
I said Dodgers in five. Honestly, I didn't think it
was gonna be a series, and you know, they gave
us a great series. That's why, again, it takes money
(01:08:37):
to get to the playoffs. You have to still be
excellent in the playoffs. Well. Also, lest we forget, the
Blue Jays had the number five payroll in baseball. It's
not like they are these plucky underdogs with a small
payroll in a small market.
Speaker 4 (01:08:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:08:49):
Yeah, yeah, I'm not saying you're saying that. No, I'm
spinning flat and George are a lot of money. Vlamo
Guerrero signed like a half a billion dollar contract which
is worth six hundred million dollars on it. That's not
like this upstart you know nobody, but team of nobody's
ragtag group. The Blue Jays had a big payroll too.
But I will say this, don't you think I'm fair
and saying that ninety eight percent of North America were
(01:09:09):
rooting for the Blue Jays. I don't know about ninety
eight percent? Sure? Why not? By the way, ratings for
the World Series astronomically high, yes, which is saying something
because usually when you include a Canadian team in said
NBA of Sports Finals, you don't get to draw any
of their TV numbers from there. It was also seven
games and a lot of the games are extremely compelling.
(01:09:31):
Baseball is good, Baseball's in a good spot, playoff baseball
is good, and they I think I saw forty seven
percent of Canada watch the game seven at some point.
Think about that for a second. For every one hundred
households that you have been knocking the door and say hi,
I'm ross, forty seven of them were watching the game,
Which made me think what are they have the fifty
(01:09:53):
three ye watch hockey of course, yeah, probably hockey hockey
was on. You know, Canada's a sports crazy country. I mean,
I know we're sports crazy, but they're really sports great.
They stay indoors. You gotta watch sports. They don't want
to do the even watched curling two, which I've been
trying to watch twenty outside. You're not gonna go out
there and you know, go play some pickle ball. That's true.
All right, what else you got, uh, Jonathan? So I
said that. I said Dodgers and six Texans beat the Broncos.
(01:10:15):
Jonathan said the Astros will sign Dylan Cease, Okay, to
be determined on that. I think the projections are round
a five year deal for him. So that's within the
realm of possibility. This could be a nice hit for
Jonathan Allen, Jonathan, that one. If you hit on that one,
that'll be that's give yourself like multiple round of applauses. Yeah,
and it was. You know, I have to give a
little Uh. I got a little nuds from our man
(01:10:37):
over there, Gordy. So I'm not gonna take Okay, I mean,
you're still in Gordy's bitch. You know. Oh, okay, you
just want to take give him the blame if you're wrong.
I got you. I see where you're working. Uh. He
also said the Blue Jays, Now, when we did this,
they were down to one. He said they were gonna
win three straight and win the World Series in six.
He was almost there, Yeah, until the ball got stuck
(01:10:58):
in the Yeah. But Brady Norwood tells us almost doesn't count.
Let me ask you this, can we can we go
to every baseball stadium and make sure that never happens again?
Or is that just gonna sometime is going to happen
that because the outfield wall is made of obviously soft material,
that you're gonna have stuff stuck. I mean that we're
in twenty twenty five, ross, how can we not? We
(01:11:20):
need to make sure that doesn't happen again. We'll get
some people right on it. People at the Rogers Center,
people everywhere. You mean, like physicists, Yeah, sure, why not?
Chemist uh huh, mathematicians, everybody, profile focus all of our best. Yeah.
The pooonhounds that they are, the pooonhounds, that's for sure,
all right. I would kind of go in my predictions,
(01:11:40):
So sure, why not? Number one Texans do not make
the playoffs. It's not on a gol Okay, yeah, cool,
it's like you have like a one percent chance. Number two,
Nick Cayley gets a relieved of his duties at the
end of this year. Oh come on. Number three. If
Mike McDaniel becomes available, which he will be, the Texans
will grab him, as they often. It's a coordinator. I
(01:12:00):
mean he was with San Francisco while Demiko is there.
Is it his turn to pick? Do they? Are they
alternating offensive coordinator picks? All right, Demiico, you got slowick
Kaylee was my guy. Now it's your turn. Here's how
it's gonna go down. Hannah and and Demik are gonna
have lunch at the Nema Marcus Cafe. You know they
have a cafe and Nema Marcus. I mean it's the
Oh absolutely, it's the most sheshy place in town. Really.
(01:12:23):
You have lunch at the department store, and that's where
Demiko's like, you sure you want to meet it? We
can go eat it like a big city.
Speaker 2 (01:12:29):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:12:30):
Well we didn't even mark. She's like, I gotta pick up.
I gotta go there anyway, I got a block card
to pick you know. I got him a new black card,
Platinum card. He's like you, let Nikki see to this.
It's my turn now. I want a guy I can trust.
So that's my third one, and my fourth one is
much more. On the media, the Houston Cougars will defeat
UCF by at least ten points on Friday night. Boom,
(01:12:52):
where's that game in Orlando? Friday, Friday night primetime on
a Friday night Houston, Central Florida America waits. There's a
lot of sting is taken out of that last week,
a lot of sting. I mean the entire thing. It's
nude on that one. I don't know. I don't care
about you're saying by at least ten, at least ten.
(01:13:12):
I'm just curious, you know, just seeing uh, just seeing
what it is relative to the line. Oh yours okay,
Central Florida favorites in that one. You heard me, I
didn't stutter minus one point five. It's a close one.
Cougar's by at least ten. I'm gonna go with the
UCF Knights win. What are they called the Southern Knights,
(01:13:35):
the Golden Knights, the Platinum Nights? Are there? Just the
Knight that used to be the Golden Knights. Right now
they're just the Knights. You usually it's just the Knights. Okay,
the Golden Knights are in Las Vegas. Sure why UCF
Knights can win? That'll be my prediction. Okay, and a
big one. You hear that, Cook Fans dot com and
(01:13:55):
the University of Texas basketball squad in Charlotte, they're gonna
brave the elements and cover the spread and cover the
night half. I you were gonna say they were gonna win.
I knew that was coming. Matas Muta Zechias and the
boys are ready to pounce and cover the nine and
(01:14:16):
a half. Jonathan flor Is yours. Uh, next time we
come back to the show, Rockets will be on an
eight game win streak. Eight games games? Yeah, got they
wouldn't been five? Are not right? No, they're four? Okay?
So seven okay, So let's see. Let's see how smart
you are on this. That's not too difficult. I don't think.
Speaker 14 (01:14:36):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:14:37):
At Memphis, at San Antonio actually the only one actually
this is gonna be this will be a feather in
the cap. And at Milwaukee. Okay, that's tough. So I
see where you're going with this, because after that it's
Washington home Portland at home in Orlando. Who's been disappointing
so far? Portland's been good though. Did they win last night?
(01:14:58):
I know they're tough with the Lakers. Okay, I see
where you're going with this. It'd be tough. I'm just
a nice feather in the cap. If that works out,
the Lakers beat the Blazers. Okay. DeAndre Aiden had twenty
nine and ten. Does he care about basketball? Again? That's
actually be good for the Lakers, if he's actually caring
about basketball. The second oldest player ever to play in
(01:15:18):
the NBA behind Greg Odin, That's not true. He just
looks like your your uncle. It looks like he's a
character in an Eddie Murphy movie. Okay, you know with
Eddie Murphy. Eddie Murphy's actually is actually Deander Eaton and
Austin Reeves is bawling, averaging thirty one game. Yeah, it's
(01:15:39):
like Lebron got the way his glute still hurt. I've
never I'm not checked on his glute. You haven't. No,
I don't check out a gluteus injury. I don't check
on men's glutes. Do you are the Lakers for real.
This is a problem because I was looking at the
standings last night Matt Thomas on the Rockets Wrap. Wait,
you can't look at standings this early. Well, somebody on
(01:16:00):
the Rockets Rap Collin Show was saying, hey, do you
think they have a shot at the championship. I'm saying,
you watch this team on the floor. Their championship caliber,
but you have to do it. Relative. That's not the
only team in the NBA thunder or tough. Are the
Spurs and Lakers going to be real? Nuggets are there
right now? You're the fifth seed. Timberwolves are back to
back Western Conference finalists, and they're getting Anthony Edwards back
from his hamstring injury. Golden State Warriors, I haven't even
(01:16:21):
mentioned the unction with the Clippers are actually not that bad.
Freaking Western Conference is ridiculous. Let's ask the commissioner for
a mid conference change. You know what, Rockets finished top
three though I'm saying it, there you go. I believe
that's a gout feeling. I'm listen to me, lazy gentlemen.
We have Alan Dave. You guys are going to go
ahead of Brad for sure. Brad's on hold, please call
(01:16:43):
in so remember Alf for Dave's second Brad third, Now,
if your name is Maurice, or you're a cliff, if
your name is anything but Brad, if if you're an Angela,
Giuseppe Matas opering, sure anybody gets in front of Brad
(01:17:03):
seven one three two, one two five seven ninety seven
one three two one two five seven ninety with the
message right now for sort of pro painters. Anybody can
paint a house. You don't want to. Why would you
want to do such a thing. I don't want you
to do that. I want what breaking news? Yes? Not
Houston related? Save it? How many? Now you guys gotta
(01:17:26):
discuss how many sounds? This is two to three? Okay,
I don't I don't have Twitter. Look you're locked and
locked down. I can't say don't go on Wavebusters listen up?
Speaker 15 (01:17:36):
So appealing?
Speaker 1 (01:17:38):
Wasn't that toomit? Yo? They got a good dealer. This
is their gut feeling on the Matt Thomas Show. All right,
a corner to Ross. We gotta we got some breaking news.
That's one. That's two. Are you gonna go thirty? Yes?
Can I try to guess? Absolutely sure? What's sport? I got?
(01:18:00):
I get texted to you, uh NFL trade, I'm gonna
you know what I I that's there's thirty two teams.
I couldn't do it. It's nothing Texans Texans related, Isn't
it not? Really? Please? It's in division. Go ahead. Sauce
Gardner Thomas Sports Enterprises traded to the Indianapolis. Hell yeah,
(01:18:28):
let's go, Sauce, let's go. Oh sorry, why are you saying? Oh,
hell yeah? Because I'm a Sauce Gardner guy. What does
it matter to you what team he's on. Thomas Sports
Enterprises remains bullish and has always been bullish on Sauce Gardner. Oh,
this is not good for the Texans. Two first round picks,
(01:18:48):
damn Ian Rappaport first on the scene. By the way,
another trade, Eh, this is probably one. Rashid Shaheed to
the Seahawks New Orleans Saints wide receiver. Okay, I don't
(01:19:11):
care about that. Breese Hall needs to be Houston, Texan
in two hours. Wow. Sauce Garden is already gonna get
big money. By the way, I don't think it kicks
until next year. Yep. Like they are paying his premium
cornerback price contract and two first round picks because he's
(01:19:32):
worth it. Coults are going all in. Yeah, they want
to win the Ams. Oh my god, you're such a
sauce lover. Just because you randomly thought he'd be good
because he played for Cincinnati. I didn't randomly think of it.
I saw him play in person. What the dog in college?
Thank you very much, Thank you very much. And I
saw him play in person twice, So I accept your apology.
My scouting services were saw him right there at Nippert Stadium. Knipper,
(01:19:56):
that's nip p language. Wants your language, Matt All. We
got people to talk to here.
Speaker 2 (01:20:00):
Now.
Speaker 1 (01:20:00):
Remember the rule is the longer you call in. It's
already on his wiki page that he's a cult. Love it,
not all of it for the Texans, rad spartacular, the culture,
the culture going all in, culture going all in. Imagine
that France, an NFL team in the ANC South going
all in. Yeah, but two first round picks for cornerback
and you're paying him big money. That's pretty wild. He's elite.
(01:20:22):
Alan Conrae, what's in your gut this week?
Speaker 16 (01:20:26):
Hey?
Speaker 7 (01:20:26):
My feeling is that the Texans dollars just reach out
to plase Keenum for the rest of the season. He's
the only one that's available that's led the NFL team
to the NFC champs.
Speaker 1 (01:20:36):
Bear He's unembarrassed. You have the trade for him.
Speaker 7 (01:20:40):
Yeah, I know he's with the Bears, but not using him.
Speaker 1 (01:20:43):
Yeah, but you can't just reach out to him. You
got you got the trade for him.
Speaker 7 (01:20:48):
Oh so he's not available?
Speaker 1 (01:20:51):
Not available?
Speaker 7 (01:20:51):
Well, then then the Texans to that. When Keenum was
with Saint Louis Cardinals and they pulled him and we
won two games to make the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (01:21:00):
Was never a Cardinal.
Speaker 2 (01:21:02):
He was.
Speaker 7 (01:21:03):
He was with other team and he was like, I'm
the third string quarterback and he led the Attentions to
win their last two games of the season to make
the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (01:21:12):
Was any Minnesota Viking was at a Minnesota Vianking He
was good with the Vikings. I think for for brief,
we're gonna we're gonna end this. And then he's he's
been a backup at like four different stops. Yeah, I forgot.
He was with Buffalo. His career earnings astronomical correct for guys,
well relative to you and I yes, you I should say,
(01:21:34):
all right, next up, I can find his career earnings
like Matt can I try to guess. Sure, when I
want to get within a million dollars, within one million,
that'd be tough. Go ahead, how about two million dollars.
I'll give you within I'll give you within five. That's
nice of you. Dave on seven Day was in your gut.
Speaker 4 (01:21:51):
Here's what's in my gut. This weekend, we saw an
NFL kicker on the Jaguars set of record with a
sixty eight yard field goal. And I'm going to tell
you that, based on what I'm seeing the leg strength
of today's kickers, that record's not going to last long.
And before this season is over, we are going to
see a seventy yard field goal from somebody.
Speaker 1 (01:22:10):
What do you think that is not a crazy thought?
We were just talking about the other day and I
want to know, Ross. Is it because the day's kickers
are bigger, faster, stronger, or is it because they get
to choose the ball and they put a bottle rocket
in there? The ball is helpful? But yeah, it's just
I mean, people have kicking coaches and this is what
they work on their entire lives, and I mean, you
(01:22:30):
still have some bad kickers. The Falcons are on their
third kicker. I think at this point, Oh, the a
spot track is trying to make me make an account.
Don't do that. We don't need that. Google AI says, Oh,
do you want to guess with you even within five
million dollars, Yeah, twenty six million, fifty five point seven
case Keenum has made fifty six million dollars ladies and gentlemen,
(01:22:54):
fifty six million. Not bad. Not bad for one of
the greatest college quarterbacks of all time. Yep, Roger, Roger
was in your gut.
Speaker 17 (01:23:05):
Oh man, I'm just Rocket related. I really think that
the uh the Rockets. First of all, a game like
that yesterday would have been easily lost yes last year,
last season. Uh that the shot making just wasn't there.
And if if we're hitting.
Speaker 2 (01:23:20):
The shot last year wouldn't easily lost that game.
Speaker 15 (01:23:22):
But I gotta I got a feeling we're gonna have
two All stars, uh the we'll got three. Also, I'm
gonna have a of course, KD gonna have Shangoon and
uh I'm in. And you're gonna have a sixth Man
of the Year in uh Interry Easton and two guys,
two players I'm not sure whose players will be uh
top five defensive player of the year, would.
Speaker 2 (01:23:45):
Two two two two to the top five?
Speaker 17 (01:23:52):
Was it wasn't Man and was Jabari probably most like that's.
Speaker 1 (01:23:55):
Proba Jabari may not had a type of name recondition
is going to get into that spot. You gotta get
him up there, though, Alpryn sching Goon's already pushing it.
He said, dpo, Y see him on the second team. Okay, defense,
it'd be nice if you got the first team, but uh,
(01:24:16):
I don't know. It's gonna be hard for a guy
that's gonna that doesn't get the kind of limelight that
Franklin Man Thompson gets. But do you know what you
keep defending the way that you do, you can then
you can definitely that. Yeah, let's go to uh Caso.
What's in your chilikin gut Caso?
Speaker 16 (01:24:32):
Hey, guys, I got a couple of things for the Rockets.
I feel like the offense will take a slight dip
here as the season goes on. I just think with
LP and Katie having a lot of the heavy load
that it's just eventually that time is going to kind
of come back down to earth. But I do expect
(01:24:53):
the defense to ramp up. I think they're ranked nineteenth
right now, which compared to last year when they were five.
It's pretty big slide. So I think things will come
back down to earth. And then my second gut is
I think the Rockets go and get a band aid
this year for a point guard. I don't know what who,
but I want to know what you guys think as
(01:25:14):
not a major hall but just a small upgrade to
help that point guard position.
Speaker 1 (01:25:20):
Thanks, okay, thanks to the phone call. I think the
Rockets will kick the tires of the trade deadline if
they don't, if they feel like that Reid does not
progressed to that level.
Speaker 7 (01:25:28):
And again.
Speaker 1 (01:25:31):
I feel stupid doing this, but damn it, I listened
to the Rockets wrap yesterday and you did that a
six to seven point guard is going to have more
turnover prone because of the size of being six to
seven and drip on the ball. Maybe sick to hear
that and agree with it. Is the mac Thomas Show
with rock Yeah, straight away, holiday down the heart of
(01:26:09):
the lane. He's the smallest guy on the floor. It
doesn't matter. He's gonna ana one come up because he
drops the lamp in for two. Played some good minutes
here in the second round. Thompson between the rings. The
bounce pass to the top of the key for shingting
with his back to that top face the double team.
Gaffer comes out out by himself, back up behind him
(01:26:30):
to Durant. Give it a go. Sheng gun pump fakes
once twice, window goes os O A PJ. Washington for
two moments behind him Durant Durant top of the key
step been looking for his first three. Is gonna try
right here and nail him. It took him seven attempts
(01:26:52):
for the three ball gives the Rockets of four pointly.
In ninety six ninety two, now Gaffard won on one
against dram I'm up back to back three. We're cany.
It took him to the fourth quarter, but it works
bye poorly. Ninety nine ninety four, Houston Alfie just dribbled
(01:27:14):
the basketball the mid cord or shot clock at ten
Game Park at one. Alfie crossover dribble left hand against Grafford,
turned spins floater five footer. That's the best move that
Alfie said all night long. Went one on one against
Daniel Gafford. He went up, spun right, hit the eight footer.
Rockets up by one O five one O two store,
(01:27:34):
I was holding you outside nineteen the shot, but I'm
going to try a contestantry that's blocked by men Thompson.
My goodness, a kogie lobs de Eathan Gathers, dunks sales
a rocket victory fifteen seconds remaining, one ten to one
O two. Sports Talk seven ninety it is Madden Ross,
(01:28:03):
let's get right to it. Time now for the Edward R.
Meurrale of sports news headline journalism. It's well, he's not here,
so it's Ross. Thank you, Matt, I appreciate it. Yes,
you're Houston Rockets holding off off the Dallas Mavericks with
the one ten to one oh five excuse me, one
O two victory to improve to four and two on
(01:28:25):
the season, fourth straight victory. Amen Thompson leading the team
in scoring, he had twenty seven points. Now he was
just four to seven from the free throw line on
a night where they did not play their best, just
twenty seven point six percent from three, just sixty six
point seven percent from the free throw line. Turned the
(01:28:46):
ball over seventeen times, seventeen points off of those given
to the Mavericks. A lot of fast break points for
the MAVs as well. The Rockets able to get the
victory win. They're fourth straight when they don't have their
best the mark of a good team, even though, of
course the Dallas Mavericks were down several key players. Rockets
play at Memphis tomorrow night. John Moran after the game
last night as they lost to the Detroit Pistons, says,
(01:29:07):
he's got no joy, So that should be a real
fun atmosphere for the folks in the midsto have been
suspended for conduct detrimental of the team. Yeah, correct, Yeah,
one game. Okay, Well he's back. Maybe he'll be angry
or maybe he'll be completely checked out. That'd be nice
to see for the Houston Rockets in action Wednesday, and
then a big game coming up Friday against the five
and one San Antonio Spurs. NET rating, which you know, Matthew,
(01:29:30):
is the offensive rating points pro procession minus the defensive
rating points procession given up. Huh Rockets second in the
NBA thunder the best team in the league. Houston Rockets
number two. There is a very strong correlation between net
rating and the best teams in the NBA year after year,
so the Rocket's number two early on in that metric.
Nice to see elsewhere. You have the news that we
(01:29:53):
talked about recently, Sauce Gardner. Full details coming in about
the trade, the Jets raiding Sauce Gardner, who signed the
four year, one hundred and twenty million dollar extension this
offseason that does not kick in till next year. Sauce
Gardener going to the Indianapolis Colts on the way back
to first round picks, and wide receiver A. D. Mitchell
(01:30:20):
going to the Jets Jets are building for twenty twenty six.
Clearly a great deal for the Jets. Absolutely, you get
off the hook of that big contract to play a cornerback. Now,
of course you have to pay cornerbacks big money, but
they're not necessarily the premium position like quarterback or defensive
end or left tackle or anything like that. You get
back two picks, two first round picks, and you take
(01:30:42):
a fire on eighty Mitchell. Eighty Mitchell hasn't been good
early on in his NFL career, but he was a
first round pick or beginning of the second round pick,
I believe, out of course, out of of course, the
University of Texas, Uh, let me see, yes, second round
O the middle of the second round, fifty second over
all pick in twenty twenty four, has yet to score
(01:31:03):
a receiving touchdown, of course, famously drop the ball in
that game earlier this year, Colts have been fed up
with ad Mitchell. About seven people that have dropped the ball. Yeah,
so Ady Mitchell could already be wide receiver too if
he's gonna get the playing time. Eric wils has been
hurt the last couple of weeks, yes, knee injury, but
he is practicing this week. Probably going to be back
is Garrett Wilson. But still I'd say a bit of
(01:31:28):
an overpay for the Colts, but they're going all in
trying to win a championship. You understand AFC is very tough.
You don't think Indianapolis Radio is going bonkers over this, ah,
I mean, I think it's a steep price to pay.
Even though just the two first round picks not worried
about Ady Mitchell necessarily, he didn't factor into their offense.
Ask you, this is the AFC absolutely winnable this year.
(01:31:49):
Kansas City looks human. Buffalo still looks like Buffalo. The
Chargers haven't done any postseasons. The Ravens are coming on
the Patriots are playing well, but nobody is striking intense fear.
I you know what, I applaud the cults for this,
I just do now. Am I scared the death of
Daniel Jones is gonna regress? Remember how Sam Darnald was
(01:32:10):
awesome last year from Minnesota first rounder? How great he
was and then he failed the last couple of weeks
and it was the old Sam Darnald. That's if I'm
a coult fan, I'm thinking it. When is the slipper
gonna fall off of Daniel Jones? Two first rounders from
Micah Parsons is steep, But I mean pass rusher is
extremely valuable and you're getting the number one best pass
rusher on the planet.
Speaker 5 (01:32:30):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (01:32:31):
I'm just telling you. You win a Super Bowl and
Sauce Garner is no, You're not going to care. Is
locking down the best Kandasity receivers or the best Buffalo receivers,
You're going to be very happy you made. That's basically
the only way that it's completely worth it because you
have to pay because you're paying him, and you're paying
him big money, which the Packers did too. They signed
Mike Parsons to a historic contract. Well, I'll say this.
(01:32:52):
What it does do is it does make things a
little awkward when it comes to what value is for
elite players. You're telling me that Sauce Gardner is worth
two first rounds. Now, that's gonna be a tough ratio
to with other players that are good players too, maybe
not as good as Sauce Garner. But giving up the
two for a top five to guy in his position,
(01:33:12):
is that now the bar if your top five and
something that's gonna cost you two first rounds. Yeah, but cornerbacks,
it's just not that the value is not there relative
to pass rusher. It's just not unless you lockdown cornerback
is great. Yeah, gonna. I'm not gonna say it's not.
There's no value. I'm not saying like they traded for
a punter, like it's great value. Tommy Town's is available,
but it's not. It's not. Micah Parsons, I get it
(01:33:34):
in my opinion. All right, what else? Uh, Well, it's
time to go unless you want this weird offs off
color story that I found. This sport's kind of sports related.
Did you see the Tom Did you see the Tom
Brady story? I did not? Oh yeah, but the dogs.
Tom Brady had a beloved family dog named Lua, who
unfortunately passed in twenty twenty three. Well on Tuesday, Tom
(01:33:58):
Brady revealed that his new juny is a clone of
his dog that died in twenty twenty three, Lua mask
How much does this cost? He is an investor in
a company called Colossal Biosciences that he paid with or
worked with to clone his dog Lua. According to an
(01:34:20):
interview with People magazine, I love my animals. They need
the world to me and my family. A few years ago,
I worked with Colossal and leverage their non invasive cloning technology.
Throw a simple blood draw of our family's elderly dog
before he passed. She passed. Excuse me, so they can
do wait, they do equine pets too? Or that can
(01:34:40):
be serious with horse racing? Can you get some secretary
at DNA? How does that work? Do you know that
if it was reasonable, I would clone my Sadie? I felt, admitute,
but I don't think the cost is probably something I
could afford. Okay, see that's what I was gonna ask.
Is this fair or fouls? You say fair? Yeah, it
(01:35:02):
doesn't seem like I'm the first of all. I have
a Laborde. No, no, we're late. I have a labradoodle.
I will own if the next dog I get in
my life once Sadie and we're gonna a little time
to heal whenever. Miss Citi's still with us and she's
doing great. But labradoodle is my favorite breed of dog
because they don't shed, they don't bark, they're very, very friendly,
and they're just the nicest dog. I've only had one
(01:35:24):
in my life, and Sadie's been awesome for me for
fifteen years. I would absolutely clone her if I could,
but I just only I can afford it. Okay, where
do you draw the line? Would you clone? Would you
clone a child? Yes? Ah, this is crazy, this is
this is this is doesn't getting wild. This is extrarecteral.
This is getting wild on a Wednesday, yeah, or Tuesday,
(01:35:47):
whatever today is? Would I clone you? No chance? You're right,
I'm unclonable, baby. One of one who call twenty four
on Sports Talk seven ninety Real Quick. JJ Watt is
going to do his second Texans game on CBS this week.
He did Houston Baltimore and uh, he is going to
do Texans Jaguars. We're in the number two crew to
(01:36:10):
come in for this one. Texans Jags must be a
light week, well, a lot of buys. I just reached
out to Iron Eagle to try to get on Friday
because I think I think Ian's gonna do the Rocket
Spurs on Amazon on Friday, so it's kind of a
two two, so we're trying to get him on. I'm
just calling to see if he's gonna do that game.
I was I gonna tell you, oh uh so, uh
(01:36:31):
You've got New England Tampa Bay is the main game again.
The two playoff teams, Jim Nance Tony rom are doing that.
The other games at noon would be Buffalo at Miami
Clean on the Jets. That's the worst game on the slate.
That's that's Spiro Adidas call him that one the Browns
and the Jets. Spirodidas is very talented, good guy. He's
(01:36:54):
probably thinking to himself, can I get a good game?
Can I get one Jim Nance game? Can we can
we do one flipsis per year? The total on that
game is thirty six and a half on Browns Jets.
That's ugly. Honestly, if I'm if I'm CBS, I probably
would have sent them to Buffalo Miami.
Speaker 7 (01:37:15):
But might.
Speaker 1 (01:37:16):
But maybe because Irons and San Antonio and Friday, if
he is that, maybe they're saying, hey, you're You're right
around the corner. You can just come back. My name's terrible. Well,
the reality is this, It's New England. Tampa Bay is
gonna be seen by most of the country. I mean,
that's just the big game. People in New England. I
was in Boston this weekend. People are losing their mind.
They get to finally get a jim Nance game. They've
had a jim Nance New England game since Tom Brady
(01:37:36):
was a quarterback. Is that true. I don't know if
it's true, but they they were. I mean I never
thought to myself, oh man, it's a big time we
get this crew are the panthers of the most anonymous
five and four team in football. Let me tell you
a sports Harvey. They went to Green Bay and won.
Do you know how hard it is to win in
Green Bay? Period? Yeah, And I did not start Rico o'daddell,
(01:38:00):
and that made a mistake and that will not be
done again. You talked to doctor rote about that. I
don't even want to hear it. Well, we got I
got a bunch of guys on off weeks, so it's
gonna be He'll be playing too. He's going to Remblin
Mumblince Dumbling. Let's go to uh. I'm going to the airport.
Speaker 2 (01:38:13):
I know you are.
Speaker 1 (01:38:14):
Jay north Side of twelve twenty six.
Speaker 4 (01:38:16):
Hi J.
Speaker 1 (01:38:19):
Hello Dad, Jay, j j.
Speaker 12 (01:38:25):
Oh J.
Speaker 2 (01:38:28):
Jay.
Speaker 1 (01:38:28):
You think our shows are best ever? Yeah? I agree.
You listen every day you support all our advertisers. Thank you, Jay,
appreciate the phone call. JA. Awesome, great stuff. Can somebody
be better than Jay? Can somebody be better than Jay
and possible worse than Brad? Think about that combination. Better
than Jay, worse than Brad. Okay, they didn't speak.
Speaker 2 (01:38:50):
Right.
Speaker 1 (01:38:50):
Yeah, so everything you said as a baseline, he's better
than Brad. Silence is better than Brad. Sometimes deaf air
is better than a Definitely he was dead. There's better
than us. He was giving us misinformation saying Richi Gannon
won a super Bowl. You guys forgot Rick Kane and
he wanted and he sold me on because I always
thought that Kevin Harnan was a partner of Rich gans
(01:39:11):
used to always say super Bowl champion. You know what
he does? He says that about Kurt Warner when he
works game to Kurt Warner super Bowl and Trent Green?
Did he also win a Super Bowl? Kanmas City?
Speaker 5 (01:39:19):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:39:20):
No, no, they went, No they ever go? Was he
the Was Trent Green the backup on the ninety nine team?
Or is Mark Bolger? Mark Bulger? You just dropped that
name out of nowhere? Mark Bulger? You remember him? I
do for different reasons. Why because I mean kind of
(01:39:42):
a presumptive name. Oh, because he's the Bulger. Oh you
think that was his his name Labert. That's the nickname
he got when he was in high school. All right,
that's about See. This is what happened in the Texan suck.
You'll check out, you're you're all mad on Monday and
you check out the rest of the week. I find
(01:40:04):
that when the Texans win, you don't even bother calling
on Monday either. So it's Dan if you do, Dan
if you don't. We're doing good, Matt, We're all good.
We got rockets, we've got rockets playing well. We got
Kyle Techer about to get a mega deal. It's gonna
get you some free food. Uh, who oh, that's you forget.
By the way, you wanted to add on we upgraded
I think it was fast casual. You upgraded to abachi,
(01:40:26):
and then you upgraded again to the the Cherry on top,
which was fast food for us three. Yes, yeah you did.
He upgraded it twice. That's why I'm trying to leverage here.
I mean, we can shave off the fast food meal.
I'll just be nice that you're gonna be owner dessert
at the at the Habachi, aren't you. Oh, I'm upgrading
to fried rice. I told you, yeah, but onions, fried
(01:40:49):
rice and white the white rice. Does you find you
don't need the fried rice, you don't need the extra counteries? Yeah,
i'd go on, uh, upgrade to the fried rice? Please? Hey,
you want green onions on your five rice?
Speaker 6 (01:41:01):
Or told?
Speaker 1 (01:41:02):
Are you good? You know what actually is ill? Okay,
thank you? Yeah, put some of that ginger sauce on there.
Yeah it's good. Thanks. By the way, Iron Eagle just
texted back he's doing both games so he will join
us on Friday. Oh I love it. Yeah, what a sweetheart.
He's a good guy. There is there are some national
people that are PUDs. Yeah he's not one of hey, pud. Yeah, okay,
(01:41:26):
I'm gonna just figure it out. Go look at Urban
Dictionary twelve twenty nine. On urban is urban seven one
three two one two five seven ninety two ulcer disease.
That's what a PUD would be. Yeah, seven one three
two one two five seven ninety there are Yeah, I
don't want to go to that list seven one three
two one two five seven eighty with the word for
(01:41:47):
uptown appliance repair. I believe that if you're gonna be
bringing your leftovers home and you're a bochie, after you eat,
you're gonna want to cold refrigerator to make sure everything's
taken care of. Right, what's the matter with you? I
went to Urban Dictionary and looked up pud. Hmm, all right,
(01:42:09):
I have to say this when we come back back
to uptown. Two eight one is the anatomical phrase to
keep it kosher? Would you read it to me off air?
What it really is? Pound twelve thirty four PM here
(01:42:38):
on Sports Talk seven HY the Matt Thomas Show, with
Ross continuing along till two o'clock. You were going to
say something and I stopped you mid sentence. What was
it about coming back from this break?
Speaker 9 (01:42:50):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (01:42:52):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (01:42:52):
About what? By looking up pud? Yeah, I will just
read the the clean version. It's I mean it's it's
I mean it's a human male's penis. Sorry, okay, that's
what the Urban Dictionary says for the definition of pud.
(01:43:14):
So I was gonna say some of the national guys
are PUDs. Yeah. Also a definition a lazily is lazy, useless,
or very weak person. Yep, keeps going. Usually their syracuse
used in a sentence. He just sits around all day
like a little pud. All right, we've got the drift
(01:43:34):
of this. We were trying to be educational on the show, Matt.
We like entertain and in ful. I'm sorry, but people
want to know about four to three defenses, not not
about what a definition of a putt is. Okay, yeah,
we can break that down. Let's go uh okay, So
the trade deadline? When it is it? Do we have
an official ending on this on this trade deadline? Sometime tonight?
Speaker 2 (01:43:53):
Right?
Speaker 1 (01:43:54):
I think it's four o'clock? Yeah, okay, so ten, It
could be halfway dark here could be a big trade
landing in the lap of the eighteen What does your
guys say to textan make a move in the next
three and a half hours? No, what precedent do we
have under Nick Cassario for deadline deals. My guess is,
if we looked at the transaction list, there's been something
(01:44:15):
that's been done, but it would be nothing that would
shake things up for a lot. This is the question
for for Adam Wexler. Oh, he'd have a doubt. I
mean he's got the snapcounts going, so he's got it. Yeah,
snapcounts are important, mat Eh, I've never really worried about snapcounts.
Sure you're worried about should I start Amari de Marcato
or a Bam Night. No, but he doesn't getting tough.
(01:44:36):
He gives me snap counts of like secondary people. It
doesn't affect my fantasy never. Okay, it's true. It's it's important.
It's important, it's information. Well, then you know what you
don't Why don't you do a snap count next week? Okay,
don't let don't let we look anything by himself. Why
don't you He's got it. I'll just retweet them. Okay,
I catch you. I can't retweet. By the way, for
those of you that think I try, I can't tweet
at all. I'm not gonna open up a burner account.
(01:44:58):
I've already got my two. I'm very very happy. I'm
not gonna add and I'm gonna wait for Twitter to
reinstate my account. I've given them the evidence on two
straight days. Okay, And like I said, I can use
my wavebusters to kind of see what's going on.
Speaker 9 (01:45:12):
In the world.
Speaker 1 (01:45:12):
They haven't replied to you. Yeah, in the meantime, follow
at sports rv out appreciate it.
Speaker 9 (01:45:16):
Now.
Speaker 1 (01:45:16):
Look, because here's the thing that's the key to all this.
Because my Twitter account is down doesn't mean my Instagram
is not free flowing and vibrant at sports empty on Instagram,
it's Instagram ig. I'm not on Snap, i am not
on TikTok, but you can follow me on Instagram and
empt or you can follow me there. I am twenty
(01:45:37):
two away from thirteen hundred, twenty two away. We were
struggling to get to one thousand for a while. I no,
you're glad, You're welcome. We're growing. I mean the content creation.
You know, it's going up, getting slapped up, getting some
likes and comments, and we're doing great. Okay, all right,
so we have I put a poll up, by the
(01:45:58):
way on my Twitter account, so you have seen it.
I can't see it Tom Brady cloning his dead dog. Now,
my presumption is that people think it's disgusting. I put
fair or foul, that's it, and uh sixty one percent foul,
thirty nine percent fear. If you'd like to weigh in
on that, you can find my Twitter at sports Harvey. Now,
you just it strikes me as weird. It could be,
(01:46:21):
but because apparently it costs. Somebody tweeted me it cost
fifty k. I were also very rude. I wouldn't do
it for fifty thousand, Trey says. Looked up cloning dogs
approximately fifty k to clone ross thirty nine to ninety
nine on sale. That's rude, that's not nice. It's all steal.
Let's see, tall, handsome, smart, humble, giving has no filter, caring, rude, condescending.
(01:46:46):
If you want all that, you can have it. You
can clone all that forty bucks. That's a deal point
being asstant and we'll get back to sports. Here are
we We've had our We've had two dogs in our life. Sorry,
go ahead, since the kids that we moved to Texas,
and you know, say, he's been with us since we
moved in that house. So it's fifty thousand. I can't.
(01:47:08):
I literally can't afford that. But if I really needed
to get five thousand, I probably could do it. I
don't know, I don't, I don't know. Apparently it's fifty k. Yeah,
that's just that's way out of my price. And then
Sam says, if Matt ever has the opportunity to clone
an adult Lauren Shahati, this will be his response, and
it's a gift saying shut up and take my money.
(01:47:28):
I'm going to try to get Shahati to a Knicks
or a Nets game. What do you mean invited her
to come? Introduce myself? It's all that's it? Nice simple?
Would you like to come to a Rockets game? How's
your wife feel about this? I don't think she knows.
(01:47:49):
And as long as you guys don't say anything, I
would say, between y'all, all right, I'll just say that's
making sure you're covering your bases. Well, I mean, I'm
on a public airways. I would hope none of you
would call her or text her reach out, say Matt
likes Laurence. Some people are already snitching on me about
(01:48:10):
Fantasy Fire or what whatever. It was rotten five. They
did snitch on you that because because you portrayed a line.
Let's talk to you speaking your truth. That's true, Larry.
In spring at twelve forty the Matt Thomas showed Ross Larry,
good afternoon, Let's talk some sports, please please please?
Speaker 2 (01:48:27):
Hey emt Rose say, man, you know I turned seventy
years old last week, right, and I've been listening to
you all for the last ten years about when Bros.
First started, Yes and every Tirth Man Man, Man, I
love you guys.
Speaker 1 (01:48:46):
Well Larry, first of all, thank you very much. Haven't
heard from you in a while. Second of all, Larry,
you sound like you're sixty five, So congratulations on signing
young on that you really are.
Speaker 2 (01:48:55):
Hey, hey, don't judge the book bands cover.
Speaker 1 (01:48:58):
There you go. That's all I'm talking about. So I said,
all the people.
Speaker 2 (01:49:00):
Around town say, man, you are great. You cared me
for ten years and not just going to the Karen
apartment of the team. And I love you.
Speaker 1 (01:49:09):
Thank you, Larry A, thank you very much. All right,
all right, thank you? All right? How about that heavy birthday?
Larry turning seventy sounds fruciating. He's been calling us for
a while. By the way, I ain't etle just send
eleven o'clock Friday morning, our time, our time. Oh, he's
gonna be in San Antonio two. So I wonder if
me he'd got to my hotel. But I don't think
(01:49:30):
he's gonna he ask you for tomalw and chul out
of recommendations Iron's and East Coast guy. I'll have to
ask him if he wants that. I don't know if
he'd be in for it. Hmmm. I feel like mild
might be too spicy for him. I don't know. I'm
just getting that gut feeling. It's like a Northeast guy.
He's it's got such a good sense of humor. Do
(01:49:50):
you think there's no how tall is jj Watt six
five or six six? Iron's gotta be maybe five eight?
Jj Watt listed at six foot five inches. How tall
is Iron listed is? I don't think he's normally in
the I don't want to go his combine numbers. I
(01:50:12):
mean there's I guess you you could look up how tall?
What comes out? Yeah, this says six feet tall. That's
there's no chance that's a I mean that is wrong.
This picture next to each other. So let's say Iron
five is listed at six just like hachemolage ones. Listen
to seven. You always go back to that's because you
are perpetrating lies. So I was given I was told
(01:50:34):
to say seven feet tall. How about this picture of
JJ WT and I and next to Ith gotta be
about a nine inch difference between his height and and
JJ's height. Use me, you heard me, nine inch tight difference,
not be the angle. The angle is important.
Speaker 10 (01:50:51):
Man.
Speaker 1 (01:50:52):
Ryan Hollins is seven feet Craig, how tall would you say?
Craig is? Craig's not taller than me. He's around six,
isn't he? But I don't know. I don't pay attention
to these things. But I don't notice people's height unless
they're extremely tall or extremely short. But weird, But it
is funny that they make it kind of a running
gag out of the fact that Iron is so much
(01:51:14):
shorter than JJ is. Yes, he's doing another Texans Gamey
Texans are one? And oh who's on Prime with him?
I don't know. Usually I get the releases of who
the announcers are, but I don't know. They rotate their
guys all right. It could be Stan van Gundy. It
could be well they got Stan. I forgot about that.
Who else could it be on? There could be Blake Griffin.
There's a bunch of different guys that do it. Blake
(01:51:35):
Griffin's good. Yeah, I've not watched one Amazon or one
Peacock broadcast yet. Lead color commentator is stan Van Gundy. Oh,
they got Brent Barry, Jim Jackson, Dell Curry, Dwayne Wade,
Steve nash Kandae Parker. It's funny because Dwayne Wade was
We're doing all the Olympic stuff on NBC, and NBC
(01:51:56):
said we don't need you with the NBA. Was it
a little I mean great, great red player. I mean
we're not trying to done grade. He kind of said
the same cliche like five times and one I can't
remember what it was. You know what's crazy is that
these athletes are the best at what they do in
their sport, but you get to network television level, these
networking executives have zero problem cutting you. It's hard, there's
(01:52:20):
a standard to be held to and that it almost
feels like when you watch a broad this is the
same thing can be said for NFL broadcast. Maybe the
mid level guy like Tony Romo, good quarterback, but not
Hall of Fame ever. Very good, but he's not going
to the Hall of Fame. No, JJ Watt maybe now
JJ Watt is on a pedestal to get to the
(01:52:40):
Hall of He's going to go to the Hall of Fame.
He may be a great analyst. The number three guys,
Trent Green, good player, but nothing spectacular. Look at NFL
on Fox. I got Tom Brady. Okay, that's that's bucks.
The trend has star power. Greg Olsen is probably the
best in the business today and he's gonna go to
the Hall of Fame as a tight end. Oh yeah,
greg Olsen is going to the Hall of Fame. Order line.
(01:53:01):
He's really it's gonna take a while. He's going. Now,
I'm gonna Mike shoot me down. God feeling is no,
but we can look it up. Three time Pro bowler,
any receptions fourteen years, not even ten thousand reception yards.
It may take him while. He's gonna get in. He's
not getting in, okay. Jonathan Wilma is one of their analysts. Yes,
(01:53:21):
Sarrel Johnson was a nice full back, but by no
means was three time Super Bowl champion. But I mean
that was I mean, it was part of it, but
it wasn't the all time great nickname Moose Johnson. But
I mean you're talking about the super super elite players
don't always try to be like Michael Jordan never did
a game magical johnsare he didn't need to. Magic Johnson
was not a great commentator, you know what I mean.
I mean, just yeah, it's hard. It's a hard thing.
(01:53:42):
And everybody thinks our jobs are easy. Mat they're hard.
Oh my god. Yes, that's why us. We were never
exceptional anything that's true. That's what we're going to talk
about it on a daily basis. That's what makes me
mad when somebody is good on air and they were
like an all time great JJ Watt, Yeah, Jackass, he's
can be really good. No, he's so, he's pretty good.
And Treigman is outstanding on him. NFL pick a lane, yeah,
(01:54:05):
bedmitted something yeah. Seven one three, two one two five
seven nine. We've got another hour plus to go. Ross
is gonna go solo for an hour because I got
to head off with the boys to Memphis. I know, Oh,
I forgot, But you're gonna take off or to go
to the airport Friday, and by the way, we we
I'm you're leaving at one o'clock, regardless of the airline situation, Marge,
because I want to see how that what's going on
with TSA. Okay, you're gonna call you call in? Can
(01:54:26):
you can you get there? Can you get to hobby
in half an hour after?
Speaker 2 (01:54:28):
Rodo?
Speaker 1 (01:54:29):
Be kind of fun for a live report from the airport. Okay,
little man on the street, if you will, how long
you been waiting? Boy, you can't. You can't the TSA
clear and all that stuff. You're you're two way too late.
That's fine, where you do? Come on? All right, let's
talk about I have a prince. I don't want to
pay for some You are in apt at your jobs,
and I have to stay in a long line and
I have to pay to get a better line for
(01:54:51):
something that should be free. No, no, I'm drawing a
line in sand, Matt. It's ridiculous. I don't even know
how much TSA prej is. I dont want to pay
for it. I have an airport experience from last Friday
that I'll be using on Shut your bum mass up,
and I hope it doesn't get in trouble. It's like
toll roads. You all should be building roads that we
can use. Are they using R and this wants your
charge in the search charge. Yeah, shut your bomb, masses up.
(01:55:12):
It's called convenience, ridiculous say the trip. All right, Tonight,
we're gonna get our first college football playoff rankings. Uh,
I got news for you. And I know you've not
been uber pleased with your beloved Longhorns this year because
they've struggled. But uh, they've been winning lately, Matt. They're
seven and two. Yes, they're right now. In the Associated
(01:55:34):
Press poll they're number thirteen. Now, you do have to
include a group of five in the group in the
group of in that twelve group. So if you're holding
to this, you're gonna be your two. You and Theory
be on two spots out on the outside looking in.
But that can all change. You run the table you're
gonna read in the SEC Championship game and you'll have
(01:55:56):
a chance to get that automatic spot. I'm not worried
about it. Yeah, there's some Longhorn fan talking to me.
It's like, Okay, the games are still to be played out.
I don't care if they're in or out this week.
I really don't to be fair BYU plays Texas Tech
this week. One of those two teams is going to lose,
which means you're gonna knock one of those teams. I
would think out of the top there. Right now they're
at eight to nine mm. So I have been startled
(01:56:20):
by a lot of things in sports. I don't know
if there's anything more startling to me than seeing Indiana
number two in the Associated Press Top twenty five. It's crazy.
I mean, you're telling me that crotchety old Kirk Signetti
goes to there in Indiana after winning games.
Speaker 15 (01:56:33):
What was it?
Speaker 1 (01:56:34):
Was he an old dominion or something like that, some
small school I remember it was William and Mary or somebody. Really,
it wasn't something big. Yeah, but he is a he's
a Saban disciple though. Yeah, he does have the Saban
roots for sure. Yeah. James Madison, James Madison. He goes
from James Madison to a mid level Indiana and turns
Indiana into a national title contender. And I'll say the
(01:56:55):
same thing about A and M. Mike Elko has got
the Aggie's at number three in this country. Was there
a world ross in your mind when this show began
back in twenty ten that you ever thought you'd have
Indiana and A and M in the top five of
anything A and M less surprising. I mean, yeah, they've
(01:57:15):
been shelling out millions and millions and millions and millions
and millions of dollars every year. Did Indiana do this?
Did I miss something?
Speaker 17 (01:57:25):
Whin?
Speaker 1 (01:57:25):
Did Indiana all of a sudden this pulpourri of cash
and he signed this huge deal now too. We'll see
how long that lasts. It'll be interesting. Good for them.
They're rest of our schedule. By the way, they're going
undefeated in the regular season. And it's the crazy Here's
the craziest part of it is that Indiana was asked
before the start of the season, went there, Big Timmy days,
(01:57:46):
Hey Indiana, you haven't played anybody, And He's like, yeah,
we're not gonna play anybody. We're gonna get out to
a very fast start and we're gonna see where we go.
And if we don't win, we don't win. But I'm
not going to suffer a law and perhaps ruined my
chances of taking my team to a top twelve spot.
Indiana's non conference schedule was Old Dominion, Kennesaw State in
(01:58:09):
Indiana State. They beat those two teams.
Speaker 14 (01:58:13):
One twenty nine and fifty seven take your time, one
sixty six car the one one sixty six to twenty three.
The old Dominion game was closed, and we're like, oh,
Indiana sucks. Yeah, it was twenty seven Illinois. That's Illinois
been since they since they were in the top ten.
There's six and three losing to Ohio State and they
(01:58:35):
lost from sixty three to ten. And again, I don't
know if nobody's gonna feel bad for cbscos, the guys
making big money, but brad nessers sitting there calling Indiana games.
I mean, just one ass kicking after the other.
Speaker 1 (01:58:46):
At Penn State, home Form Wisconsin, at Purdue, they're going
to win, win, So even if they lose Ohio State
in the Big Ten title game, it's not gonna ran
yeah into freaking it again, I don't even know. I'll
have to ask Vanessa because we're gonna be on the planet.
She's gonna have to know what happened. Because when you
(01:59:07):
think of the the power brokers financially in sports the
last five years, Texas text top of the list, right,
SMU super high on the list. Who else has been
known for throwing Who's throwing a bunch of cash at
people in Oregon. Well Oregon always has Yeah, but they weren't.
They're not a traditional power. No, no, no, uh who
(01:59:29):
else is throwing a lot of money? That's all of
a sudden on the on the well, you need to
look at the standings. Is anybody that's in that group
that normally isn't in that group? I just liked that
their quarterback is named Fernando Fernando Mendosa. I mean they
are They are ranked higher than Alabama, Georgia, Oregon. Oh,
(01:59:50):
by the way, b Yu also has some money to
throw a people. But by us had a top recruit
in basketball. Yeah. Basketball team is gonna be good, right, yeah, Oh,
they're gonna be very good. Oh is Vanderbilt throw money?
And people say it in two Vanderbilt usually remember wh
Vanderburt was the gimme remember Vanderbert was the Well, if
they really do create a mega conference, they're gonna have
to kick Vanderbilt out because Vanderbilt doesn't spend money in athletics.
(02:00:11):
They're doing it. I don't know what they're doing. Well,
they lost to Texas. I know that they covered they did.
Thanks for the referees. Oh a little referee driven there
huh okay, all right, Hey Hi. By the way, how
is Oklahoma ranked higher than Texas in the AP pole? Well,
(02:00:32):
it's it's subjective. I can't tell you the reason why
beat them head to head. Who has more impressive victories overall?
Probably Texas. Is The Matt Thomas Show with Ross one
(02:00:53):
o three pm here on the Sports Talk seven ninety.
The Mat Thomas Show with Ross Without Matt Thomas. He
is ducking out early as he is heading off with
your Houston Rockets, who will be taking on the Memphis
Grizzlies tomorrow seven o'clock start here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
In the meantime, I will be hanging out with you.
(02:01:15):
Jonathan Allen is here as well. Jonathan's gonna bring us
an NFL rewind as I just sprung that on him
like ten minutes ago. It's fine. There's a ton of news.
There's been like five different trades. We can just run
through those and go through that. So we'll get the
NFL rewind coming up in about fifteen minutes. In the
meantime or actually the entire time. You can get in
as well on the phone lines if you would like,
(02:01:36):
at seven one three two one two five seven ninety
seven one three two one two five seven ninety The
big trade that we will talk about in that segment
the Colts adding Sauce Gardner in a blockbuster trade, two
first round picks and a d Mitchell, the second round
(02:01:57):
wide receiver out of Texas they took last year in
the draft, all for a lockdown corner. I mean, this
is this is Michael Parsons prices, So a bit of
an overpay if you ask me, because you're also going
to have to pay Sauce Gardner the four year, one
hundred and twenty million dollar extension that he signed this
offseason with the New York Jets that hasn't kicked in yet.
(02:02:17):
Jets win on this deal, Colts could win two. I mean,
if Sauce Gardner is there and he's locking everybody down
and that defense is really good, we know great that
offense has been with Jonathan Taylor as far as an
MVP candidate, Daniel Jones resurrecting his career, and a really
good Colts team that is going. I mean, they're gonna
run away with the AFC South. Right now, it's seven
(02:02:38):
and two Jaguars and Texans playing each other. Jacksonville in
second place at five and three. If the Texans are
able to win that game this week, as they are
favored in that game. So if the Vegas line holds,
I think it's just what is it one and a half,
I haven't checked recently, then you're probably gonna have a
situation where you have the five and four Jaguars, four
(02:02:58):
and five Texans. Yet AFC sou champis it's already going
to be the Indianapolis Colts. We're basically already there. So
I understand why the Colts did what they did, a
bit of a premium overpay, and it begs the question,
at what point do you say that this is a
successful trade. I mean, do they have to win the
Super Bowl this year? Probably not, within the next couple
of years, get out of the AFC. It's gonna be tough.
(02:03:22):
But if you have a team that's good and close,
which the Colts are, and you're not necessarily the caliber
of where I think the Chiefs will be, where I
think the Buffalo Bills will be, even though the Chiefs
are just five and four, then you got to make
some moves. So Chris Ballard, who have been much more
aligned there in Indianapolis. A lot of people wanted him
gone the last couple of years, Jim Mersey before his passing,
(02:03:42):
sticking to his guns and sticking with Chris Ballard through
the whole Anthony Richardson debacle and the old I mean,
it's been a bunch of debacles a quarterback over there,
Carson Wins and Matt Ryan and Philip Rivers and all
the backup dudes. It's been crazy over there with with
what the Indianapolis Colts got going on. So big trade
(02:04:04):
not a direct impact to the Houston Texans, but impact
to the AFC South, which was already pretty much out
of the Texans grass. But they still have two games
left with the Indianapolis Colts, but some tough games with
the Chiefs Bills. I'm not gonna call it a must
win game, Jonathan, because you know, I don't you know
how I feel about must win games. Oh no, man,
(02:04:24):
it seems like it's getting pretty close.
Speaker 13 (02:04:28):
No.
Speaker 1 (02:04:28):
No, We've already had must win games earlier in the
season and they lost them. People said Jaguars was a
must win game in Week three. People said the Titan
the Ravens game was a must win game in like
Week five. Nobody said the Seahawks game was a must win.
Broncos game would have been nice to have. I mean,
you should have won that game against the Broncos. He
basically say that about every Texans loss that they've had
(02:04:48):
so far, not necessarily that they should have won on
the road against the Seahawks. They were getting vastly outplayed
in that game, but every other one, every other loss
they should have could have would have won those games. Games,
the one score games against the Rams, Buccaneers, Jaguars, Seahawks,
and Broncos. They have been in five one score games
(02:05:09):
this year. They are zero to five in one score games.
So they just could have won a couple of those.
They'd be in much better position as far as making
the playoffs. Now they're down to to I mean, just
a few chips left on the table, and if they
lose against the Jaguars, it's gonna be really bad. They
can rip off a bunch of wins after that, if
(02:05:29):
they get CJ. Stroud back and he's healthy, and this
offensive line was looking better, the offense had been looking better,
and the defense, of course we know, is one of
the best units in football. It's tough, but like that
one cost. I think it was yesterday. He was saying
that he was just checked out of everything, and I'm
almost at.
Speaker 2 (02:05:45):
The c J.
Speaker 1 (02:05:46):
Stroud's checked Oh the oh Texans fans always check out.
But like, look, we talk go ahead, no, but I'm
saying that if we lose again, what is there to
really even hope for at that point? Because right now,
like Matt said earlier, nothing's gon happen. Deadline, You'll you'll
be three and six. You have lost three of your
last four. Nice win against the forty nine Ers, an ugly,
(02:06:08):
ugly game. And that's another thing too, when people are
checking out of the Texans. I get it, Like I
look at the board. I look at the spreads every week,
I look at the biggest, smallest spreads. I look at
the totals, biggest smallest totals, like a good fun NFL
game is going to have a total of like fifty
to fifty two plus. The Texans are always at or
near the bottom of the league. This week, you're not
(02:06:29):
the worst Jets and Browns. I mean, you want to
claw your eyes out or you want to watch Jets
and Browns thirty six and a half in an NFL game.
That basically implies like, if these teams can course score
eighteen points, they're lucky. That's how bad that is. What
(02:06:50):
is that like eighteen? Yeah, basically an eighteen to sixteen
game at this point, or I guess in nineteen and nineteen,
twenty twenty to eighteen game. Yeah, that's nasty. Nobody wants
to watch that. That's what the Texans have. They're at
thirty seven and a half. They're one point better than
that Jaguars. Texans. This is ugly football, at least if
(02:07:12):
you're gonna be bad like the Cowboys. Now, they didn't
score a ton of points against the I guess the
Cardinals yesterday. I think it was was like seventeen. But
for the most part they've been in some fun neck knockdown,
rock them, sock them, drag it out. Last team that
get the ball wins because we have a horrible defense
like that, that's at least entertaining. Like for the most part,
these games are just bad and they come down to
(02:07:34):
these marginal calls that Demico Ryans continues to fumble as
far as decisions on when to kick, what to do
in this short down situation, Like they get to the
the one yard line. How often they get to the
one or two yard line and they cannot punch in
a touchdown. That is not fun football. That is not entertainment.
(02:07:55):
The NFL is supposed to be entertaining sports. So where
we're seeing all these crazy touchdowns and plays and oh
my gosh, you see that, and you're on the group
chat and you're like, oh my goodness, did you see
that Nico Collins catch? Did you see that CJ. Stroud throw?
Did you see I don't know Woody Marks's catch and
his stiff arm into the end zone. They're not getting
(02:08:17):
into the end zone. It's not been entertaining. So I
understand why people are saying they're checked out and they're
gonna further check out if you watch this Jaguars game,
because it's not gonna be Trevor Lawrence versus Davis Mills
is not appetizing at all. We don't have any update. No,
he's probably I'm gonna get just in general, when you
(02:08:39):
leave the game with a concussion, that means you already
failed concussion protocol and then they generally hold you out
a week from there for your for your own safety.
So my guess, without knowing for sure is that CJ.
Stroud is gonna miss this week and then he'll be
back next week. Normally, if it's the first one of
the year, you miss week. If it's multiples, then you're
probably gonna miss multiple weeks. In the NFL, that's just
(02:09:01):
kind of been the general rule of thumb. Of course,
there have been exceptions to that, So yeah, get ready
to learn. Davis Mills, Iron Eagle, and JJ Watt not pretty.
So I get it. I'm battle red Ross though, I'm
a Texans fan now and I'm gonna continue to root
for them. Okay, we're gonna take quick break here on
the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. We're talking some Texans
(02:09:24):
football as they have the big game coming up against
the Jaguars. A lot of NFL news with the moving
and shaking with the trade deadline. Do you think the
Texans will make a trade. Should they make a trade,
you can get in and talk about that. Rockets get
the victory over the Dallas Mavericks last night one ten
to one oh two. Phone lines open for you at
seven to one, three two one two five seven ninety
(02:09:47):
seven one three two one two five seven ninety We
also have the NFL rewind coming up. It is the
Matt Thomas Show with Ross without Matt Thomas with you
until two o'clock here on Sports Talk seven niney all right,
you know what that music means. It is time for
the NFL rewind. Here on the Matt Thomas Show with Russ,
(02:10:10):
where we had to start off. We got some breaking news.
I would say it's at least two. Okay, Now, if
you're a Cowboys fan, it's like a four. But most
of us, I would say, in the Houston area, not
(02:10:32):
Cowboys fan, I'm gonna stick with two. Still a pretty
big blockbuster trade the Jets. You know, I give it three,
Give it three? Why not? Quinn Williams is a baller.
The Jets are trading three time a Pro Bowl defensive lineman,
Quinn Williams to the Cowboys. Wait, let me make sure
(02:10:55):
this is the see this is how it used to be.
You see a blue check and you're good. Tom Pelissaro,
Tom Pelisaro, seven hundred and ninety one followers. This has
got six hundred retweets. Quinn Williams to the Cowboys. Tom
Pelissaro says, New York getting a twenty twenty six first
(02:11:16):
round pick and more for Williams. Oh yeah, Adam, okay,
long as okay, Chefty's got it. Pelisara, I mean, Pelisara
is very reliable too. But if Schefti's got it, were
definitely in the clear. Okay, So Jess's clean house. So
you had Jerry Jones was talking about a possible trade
being made or that there was already a trade lined up.
(02:11:38):
Quinn Williams, three time pro bowler, been one of the
best on the interior. Isn't this the guy who blessed
himself on that interview when he came into the league.
This is the same dude, did he you know what
I'm talking about? No, wasn't he the one that can
cussed c J Stroud or heard him on that turf
that meant life turf. Quinn Went is a bad man,
like he's good. He's twenty seven years old. I don't
(02:12:00):
know what his contract situation is, but that's good for
the Cowboys who are three and five and one. Excuse me,
I don't want to I don't want to forget their
their uh their tie for a first round pick. So
they gave away, say they got two first round picks
for Michael Parsons they're giving one away to get Quinn Williams.
(02:12:22):
Interesting stuff. So the Jets's Jets fire sale. How do
you feel right now? If you're Aaron Glenn? How can
they disgrace Nimitz cougar legend Aaron Glenn like this? If
you're Aaron Glenn and you're looking like this, like so
they traded away? So I mean you are a defensive
minded coach, by the way, the defensive coordinator of the
(02:12:44):
Detroit Lions who was hired away to helm the New
York Jets. They just traded away your best cornerback and
your best defensive lineman. Your team is in a fire sale,
and Justin Fields or Tarrod Taylor are your quarterbacks. And
Breece Hall might be going away as well. You're still winless.
(02:13:05):
You need to start looking for real estate. Man, I
hope he isn't there. Well, it probably didn't buy in
New York anyway. It's too expensive out there. It's New York.
So you are you are one in seven on the
season and they're trading away your best playersikes. Al right, sorry, Jonathan,
I was gonna have you bring us NFL this. Yeah, no,
(02:13:27):
you're fine. This is some meaty news. Also as well
moving for oh else, Yes, somebody somebody tweeted somebody uh
tagged thank you to Strostros. Yes, Quinn Williams blessed himself
in his interview Please I knew, was like, he looks
my gosh, he looks so young. He's got braces. It
(02:13:50):
looks like he's twenty two years old. And now he's
just this big, menacing, three time Pro Bowl defensive tackle
who was in wreaking havoc on NFL the offensive lines
for the last three years. He was a bad man
in Alabama. Yeah, that's what I was gonna say. Georgia.
But I was like, no, he didn't go to Georgia.
I know he was had to be one of the
last two. Now it it was sixth year or seventh
(02:14:13):
year in the NFL. Are you serious? Twenty ones year
he's he's oh never mind, he didn't slip in the draft.
He was third overall. Yeah, I'm getting old, beast, Yeah,
you are getting old, Johnathan gosh winning get you a wheelchair,
high school, get you a walker interviewing like last week,
twenty nineteen. Apparently, Okay, so yeah I was junior school.
(02:14:34):
All right, nobody cares, All right, what else you got on?
What else? Shut up? Shut up? Hey, So so Seahawks
also got another weapon out of the out of Saints
with Rashid Shaheed. I don't know what else he's got here,
but what was the what was the trade for Rashid Shaheed?
Now a Seattle Seahawks. That's good draft picks for him.
(02:14:54):
Seahawks didn't tell me what got from I'm telling you, folks,
bad journalism. I apologize you. Seattle is sitting their twenty
twenty six fourth and fifth round picks to New Orleans
for Rashidi Sahied. And that's kind of cheap if you
ask me to add another weapon over to the seats.
Seahawks are legit NFC contenders. I'm just gonna tell you
right now. The Dogs they look I mean, the Eagles
(02:15:14):
are great, the Rams are really good. Seahawks, Buccaneers, that's
your top four. Maybe you put the Green Bay Packers
in there. I'm buying in on the Seahawks. They're legit.
Sam Donald's been great, Jackson Smith and Jigba is maybe
the best receiver on the planet right now. Honestly, I
(02:15:37):
mean he's up for that. I mean Jamar Chase certainly
justin Jefferson. Certainly he's getting in that conversation. Like if
you told me Daniel Jones and Sam Donald and you're
twenty twenty five going to twenty twenty six, we're gonna
be be somebody, and I'd be like, this is they
have a one score loss to the Niners, a one
score loss of the Buccaneers in a shootout. I mean
they were very they lost. They only beat the Texas
(02:15:58):
by eight, but they were very clearly the better team
in that in that game they got up like twenty
eight to nothing on the Commanders. Seahawks are legit and
Rashid Shaheed is gonna be good. Raiders are also trading
dealing Jacobe Myers to the Jaguars for yes and six
pick and what are the Jaguars doing? You know it's
(02:16:18):
Brian Thomas been that bad. I guess he has. Hey,
that's not too different. He's been hurt and disinterested.
Speaker 7 (02:16:23):
Man.
Speaker 1 (02:16:24):
Yeah, Jacob Parris is good. Jacobin Myers has been one
out of there. He's been disgruntled. And I forgot that
Travis Hunter was hurt as well, so that Travis Hunter's
missed a couple of games. Brian Thomas has been bad,
So this is a good trade for the Jaguars. Jacobin
Myers hasn't had a great season for the Raiders, but
I think a lot of that is he's in a
bad situation. You don't want to be there. I would
(02:16:44):
expect him to hit him to produce more in a
Jaguars uniform, even though I don't think Trevor Lawrence. I
don't think Trevor Lawrence is a bad quarterback. He's just mid.
I think he's gotten watching some of the games this year.
I think he's done a little better. He's a little
more comfortable.
Speaker 14 (02:16:58):
You know.
Speaker 1 (02:16:58):
I think he's going to be a guy who's around
like the fourteenth to eighteenth best quarterback in the league
at any given moment. And that's okay because he was
this all world prospects. Sometimes all world prospects don't work out, yeah,
I mean, and guys can hit their ceilings at a
certain age. You know, there are child prodigies who are
geniuses at twelve who don't develop and they just develop
in a regular people. I've seen them in my just
(02:17:20):
people I grew up with. You see them now exactly.
It's crazy to think about that. I don't know if
you think of like child prodise he's at the age
of twelve and chess like, oh, he's the best in
the world, and they don't develop necessarily to the one
of the best. Everybody hit the ceiling at some point
or they lose a passion. I'm not saying that happen
for Trevor Lawrence, but uh, he's just he's not going
to be a Tier one quarterback. I don't think in
(02:17:41):
his NFL career. Did you mention the other Cowboys trade
with Logan Wilson? I did not, So that was a
sou after this loss man. Jerry Jones, Jry Jones, Mike
some trades. Now, I don't know why I talk like lace, Hm,
I don't know. I mean, I don't have time to
jack with you today. Let me try to find this.
(02:18:03):
I got some of these.
Speaker 9 (02:18:06):
I don't have the patience to jack with you today.
Speaker 1 (02:18:08):
I can't jack with you today, all right, Jerry, thank you,
appreciate you. This was yesterday as well.
Speaker 7 (02:18:15):
Raven's acquiring a whole bunch of time when I have
to put a damn out of you.
Speaker 1 (02:18:21):
Okay, this is Jerry Jones to his defense. Put your
damn act together, all right? There you go. What was
the name of the What was the name of the linebacker,
Logan Wilson. Logan Wilson for the Bengals. You can't be
that good, That's what I don't. I think that's why
why he doubled up and got somebody else. Quinny Williams
is a great acquisition. So that Cowboys defense is going
to be a little bit better. I still think they're
(02:18:44):
on the outside looking in as far as those contenders
that I mentioned in the NFC, but that's trying to
get something done. Meanwhile, any updates on the Texans, Jonathan,
do we have any big Texans trade news. Let's see,
they could use a pass catcher, they could use a
running back, they can use it off the lineman defense
is pretty good, but I mean you can still I
don't even know a linebacker or maybe some secondary help
(02:19:06):
anywhere in there. Any pig nudes. I've been refreshing my
page the last five minutes, in the last hour, we
haven't got anybody. Okay, don't be disappointed. Maybe this is
something happening. And so it's a first rounder a and
a second rounder from the Cowboys and Mazzie Smith, who
(02:19:28):
is a defensive lineman for the Cowboys. So a d lineman,
a second rounder in a first rounder going to the
Jets are loading up? Dude, Wow, I hope they keep
Aeron Glynn there. I think he's a good coach. I
know it's New York. He's a fall guy, all right,
anything else in the NFL? Rewind Jonathan, We're gonna we
(02:19:50):
clear now. There's a a bunch of other trades. We
geeat a bunch of little small trades, especially like with
the Ravens and Dramonte got a trade Hendrickson, Right, are
the Bengals Are they giving up? I don't think they
should be given up right now? Joe Flacco's been good,
but they're three and six. You gotta be realistic. And
it doesn't seem like Joe Borlo is coming back anytime
(02:20:12):
from that. Yeah. That turf toe surgery, what is even
It's like a ligament dam damage in your toes. It
sounds like the most harmless injury. It's the most harmless
sounding injury. That's pretty serious. I think you can have
like ligament, like multiple ligaments turning your toe and then
just call it turf to what's the actual is the injury?
Just call it turf to like, you know, you want
(02:20:33):
to get you the actual name. Well, I don't know
what it's called. Uh, meta tarsa fullane geel. It's a
meta tarsa fulanengeal joint sprain. There you go. That's why
they just call it like it's called it turf tow.
It's good, We're good. Confused anybody, Well, you know the
(02:20:54):
meta tarsals that's foot and the falangeel that just means
the the toe, right, I don't no, you know what
this is, your Faul Johnson. We're gonna take a break.
We're gonna go get out. I'm gonna dust off a
medical book out of the medical library up here, and
then we're gonna go in. Uh, we're gonna dive into that. Okay,
big trades made in the NFL, Texans not being a
part of it. If Nick Cassario sits on his hands,
(02:21:17):
is that general managing malpractice? Yes? Or do you say
it's giving up too much in the draft or does
it depend? What do you think? Seven one three two
one two five seven ninety. I'm getting like I'm getting
trade envy. Cowboys are making multiple trades, Jets are ownloading stuff.
But the Seahawks have traded for players. The Jaguars and
(02:21:39):
the Colts, the two teams that are ahead of you
in the AFC South, have made trades. How do you
feel about it? Seven to one three two one two five,
seven ninety. Is it a must trade trade deadline for
Nick Cassario and the Texans seven to one three two
one two five seven ninety. All right, my head is spinning.
(02:22:11):
I'm trying to keep up all these trades happening in
the NFL. Jets are gonna be a really good spot,
really good spot. I hope they don't do my boy,
Aaron Glenn dirty. Don't shake your head at me, Jonathan,
It's fine, all right, welcome back to the Matt Thomas Show. Well, okay,
(02:22:34):
if you thought he was this great coach, he was
a hot name defensive coordinator, wasn't there franchise he turned
down to go to the Jets. I can't remember where
he told them thanks but no thanks. Maybe the cycle
before or something like that, like a really good defensive
coordinator with the Detroit Lions held in high esteem, was
(02:22:56):
a Pro Bowl player. It was a Texans legend for
a couple of years. And of course, hey name it's
Cougar and uh Texas A and m right. It is
the aggie graduate I think, or at least an aggie player. Yeah,
so we'll see. I'm just saying like, if you like,
this is our guy and then you give him justin
(02:23:18):
fields and a team that has completely fallen apart, and
you're saying he can't win, it's tough. I mean, if
that means Brece Hall is definitely got to get moved
right talking about doing it right now, and there's no
way Texans aren't putting their first foot forward to get him.
I don't know, I just don't. It just hasn't been
in Nick. Cause if somebody could bring to my attention,
(02:23:39):
Nick Casario dead like blockbuster deadline deals, I just I
can't think of any What time is the is it?
Is it four o'clock eastern? I think it's four o'clock eastern.
H Okay, so three o'clock our time is the deadline.
So we're coming down to like the final ninety minutes.
This has felt like this has felt like the Major
(02:24:00):
Baseball or the basketball trade deadline. We've talked about how
normally in years past, I mean, teams don't want to
they don't want to give up draft capital for the
most part, but you got a lot of draft capital
being given up, and maybe just people getting in win
now mode because these general managers, you know, the leashes
are shorter. If you're going out there and you're losing
(02:24:21):
all these games and your job is on the line,
you're gonna have to do whatever you can to try
to at least give your fan base and your ownership
a semblance of hope that hey, I'm doing something, I'm
not sitting in my hands. Yeah, look at this trade
I made. Look I got us into the playoffs, or
look I got us a division championship. Maybe that's what's happening.
(02:24:41):
Maybe it's just more urgency from people. Why we've seen
more trades in the last several years, Because I don't
care about trading a first round pick. In two years
from now, I could be gone if I don't make
the playoffs, I could be gone if we don't win
the make it the divisional round or the AFC or
NFC championship game or something like that. Because this is crazy,
and the Jets are cleaning up. Quite frankly, they have
(02:25:02):
five first round picks in the next two years. The
New York Jets. They have next year, they have theirs,
then the Indianapolis pick. In twenty seven, they have a
Dallas pick in Indianapolis pick, and then their own. And
by the way, in case you were wondering that Dallas
(02:25:23):
pick that the Jets are getting, it's going to be
whatever is the highest between their pick and the Green
Bay Packers, So they get to choose whichever won is
the best pick in twenty twenty seven between Dallas's own
pick and the one that they have from the Michael
Parsons trade. That's going to the Jets. That's a great
trade for them. Quinn Williams big miss Sauce Gardner, great cornerback.
(02:25:48):
But you got five first round picks in the next
two years, and they have two round picks two first
round picks next year as well in that deal. Jets
are cleaning up. Let's go and check any news anything
on the Texans. I'm hity fresh, I'm hitting that. Five
(02:26:09):
Breese Hall to the Houston Texans makes perfect sense. That
would also signal to us. I mean, we haven't heard
anything from from as far as an update on what's
happening with Joe Mixon. He's got to be gone for you.
But wouldn't that help as well at getting Breese Hall,
would just pass blocking, just you know, having some extra
backing anything. I mean, we had Nick Chubb and Woody Marks.
They're fine pass blocking, they just can't they're just not
very good runners. But also you have to ask yourself, Okay,
(02:26:31):
we can have these these great running backs, but if
we can't block for them, we don't have a good
offensive line. The run blocking has been a lot better
for the Texans, especially, and Ingram's been good. Titus Howard
has been good, but he's out of with concussion. Offensive
line running game, that's what I would like to see.
If you don't if you know, if you're saying, oh, okay,
we're okay with Nico Collins. We got Dalton Schultz and
(02:26:54):
Jalen Knowles made some plays. Christian Kirk as long as
he's healthy, I'm okay with that. Necessarily needing pass catcher.
Offensive line is also difficult to make those types of
trades because guys don't want to give up good offensive linemen.
I don't think you're gonna be getting some kind of
Pro Bowl caliber guy, not anyone of the caliber of
you know what, Queenn Williams is to the defensive line
(02:27:15):
or what Micah Parsons is. Of course that type of stuff.
But I mean, if you can get somebody that's just
a plus starter, that'd be nice. But Nick Cassario is
from that kind of old school Patriots where the for
the most part, they like to accumulate draft picks. He
has made some deals, especially of course the will Anderson
(02:27:36):
deal with it, where they wanted to get C. J.
Stroud in will Anderson and they gave up some premium
draft capital for that. But for the most part it's
been we want to hoard picks and we're gonna trust
the process and all that type of stuff. And it
just seems to me just in general, Nick Sio's not
wanted to quickly admit a mistake. They've built this offensive line,
(02:28:00):
they drafted ariante Ursery. They made a couple of those signings,
the Laken Tomlinson signing, the ed Ingram Sigling did admit
a stake, admit a mistake getting rid of Cam Robinson,
saying we got too many guys, or maybe that's saying, ah, well,
we didn't need him anyways, because Orianti Ursery is so good,
which he's been mid as a second round rookie. So yes,
(02:28:23):
not a lot of precedent for Nick Cassario making a
bunch of moves at the deadline. Be nice to see something.
Got an hour and twenty minutes to go, Will the
Texans be making a move before now and the trade deadline?
I just keep refreshing Ian Rapaport and Adam Schefter at
(02:28:46):
this point and we'll see what happens. We got a
little bit of time left, one segment to go here
on this show, and then of course Adam and Adam
on the A Team will have all the NFL trade
deadline coverage for you as well. Of course we have
Houston Rocket stuff to get to college football stories, anything

help him, guys, but I did tell him myself, you know.
And I try to be open and honest in this
life of ours, Jonathan, okay, and sometimes too honest, But
then I say white lives help, you know. I just
I've been a bad liar since I was like a kid.
(02:30:27):
Like agree, Oh you cannot agree. I cannot agree. My
mom and dad they knew exactly like you're lying ross, Like,
why are you even trying? I am very kind of
I have like an expressive face, and I'm just a
bad I just a bad liar. So you know what,
the true shall set you free. That's my philosophy. That's
(02:30:47):
what I go with. Anyways, you prize horse calling in
no Believe it or not today because Matt Thomas is
out for the final hour. He is traveling with the
Houston Rockets. They won last night against the Dallas Mavericks,
and your Houston Rockets number two in net rating. I
try to explain. I think it's very simple. I know
(02:31:09):
sometimes you know the metrics goal over everybody's head, but
net rating is very easy. Points per possession, offense minus
defense net rating. That means who's the best in basketball?
Oklahoma City, thundered by that metric, are number one, They're
seven and freaking Oh the Houston Rockets, who almost beat
the Thunder on opening nine. You were there. You can
argue could have should have would have won that game.
Tar Easton would have shut up and reseparate games, throw
(02:31:31):
every possession away. Wow, you said it, not me, Jonathan,
appreciate you. Yes, And by the way, there are some
folks unhappy with Reed, sheperd. We can talk about that
in a second. But the Rockets number two in net rating.
Problem is the top four teams are all the freaking
Western Conference. The West is so tough. Thunder, Rockets, Nuggets,
(02:31:53):
and Spurs. Your top four teams in net rating. Of course,
we shall say short sample size, only six games played
for the Rocket, It's only seven for the Oklahoma City Thunder,
so that will all shake out, and quite frankly, I
think the Rockets offense can get even better. The three
point shooting is gonna cool somewhat from how hot it
has been started the season. But hey, Kevin Durant was
two for eight last night, and how many of those
(02:32:14):
looks were open for him? I would say the two
that he made were like the toughest ones. He's like,
all right, I'm taking this game over. I'm gonna hit
threes at the top of the key, and that's just
how it's gonna go, which is why they got him
eat somebody like that. It was awesome. I'm gonna tell you.
I was sitting there at the Toyota Center doing pre
and postgame show, uh, and I was like, dude, this
(02:32:34):
is awesome to watch in person. I know, folks, it's
this is a city that we are. And I don't
even want to say bandwagon or frontwork because that has
more of a negative connotation, because I get it, Like you,
you have to say what people get mad when they're fans.
And when the Astros got all good and everybody hopped
on the bandwagon and they became at Stros fan for
(02:32:57):
life on Twitter and their account was created in November
of twenty seventeen. Like I get it, people like, hey,
I stood all this time with this team and you
come show up when they're winning. But doesn't that kind
of make sense. Doesn't that makes sense to only spend
your money and your time and bring your family down
to the game even when they're losing. You can have
(02:33:18):
a good time. It's a better time when the team
is good. Especially in Houston when you got to go
through sixteen, go go to fifty nine. All this traff
making downtown traffic and we're spread out city because you
have people all the way west and Katie and Sinco
Ranch and fullsher or whatever people all the way north,
and spring Woodlands people all the way southwest, and you
know you can go everywhere every corner in Pairland and
(02:33:39):
sugar Land and Baitdown. Don't want to leave everybody out,
you know what I'm saying, Like it's tough, and this
traffic is hillatious, and getting downtown to the Arena Toyota Center,
getting downtown to the stadium and at minute made and
parking and figuring it out, and then it's gonna be
another hour commute for you to get home once you
get through all that traffic. Traffic, it's difficult. So I
(02:34:00):
get it. I really I when I say we're a
front running town, I really don't mean that to be
as negative as it sounds like. I get it. But
this Rocket team is fun to watch. Man Kevin freaking Durant,
he is one of the twelve at the worst fifteen
best players to ever walk the planet as far as
(02:34:23):
a basketball player, and he is on your team right now,
and he's fun to watch. And Alpi sching Gun and
Men Thompson and this Rocket squad who's number one in
offensive rating in basketball right now, they're going to get
even better offensively. They're gonna get more cohesive, they're gonna
get better chemistry, and I think the turnovers are gonna
(02:34:44):
be limited ball handling turnovers. I don't know how much
those are gonna get better just because you got a
bunch of tall guys who aren't great ball handlers, who
aren't elite ball handlers, like Alpi sing Gun for a
seven footer center. He's a good ball handler, but he's
not elite. Same thing for Kevin Durant, Men Thompson, Tar Easan.
Like these guys, how often do you see them just
(02:35:05):
kind of just dribbling the lane, ball goes off their
foot or gets ripped. I mean, it just happens. So Rockets, though,
gonna be real fun to watch. Next in action Wednesday,
seven o'clock. Tip here on Sports Talk seven ninety. It'll
be a six o'clock a launch pad with yours truly,
all right, John and Perlin has gotten real quick, only
a couple of minutes left in the show, so let's
get him real fast. What's up, John?
Speaker 2 (02:35:27):
Oh much?
Speaker 1 (02:35:28):
Man?
Speaker 18 (02:35:28):
Just uh bumping me out seeing all this stuff going
on over the NFL trade.
Speaker 1 (02:35:33):
Now you get deadline ivy, don't you?
Speaker 2 (02:35:37):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (02:35:38):
Oh great?
Speaker 18 (02:35:39):
Uh Texan's not going to do anything, of course, Uh
yeah sorry, said Nick Atrio. Is just so arrogant and sorry,
but he's a prick and he's not gonna do anything
because he actually thinks our offensive line is good and
they just need to execute a little better and keep situations.
(02:36:01):
But honestly, they're horrible and he has a terrible job
building it, and he's not gonna trade for any boosting
the offensive line or in the run game.
Speaker 1 (02:36:10):
Yeah, I'll all right, thanks a lot, John, Look, I
hope you're wrong. I know we're running short on time.
It is now just an hour and seven minutes left
the trade deadline. Keep it tuned here on Sports Talk
seven to ninety because when news breaks, you want to
hear the great wonderful analysis you're gonna hear from Adam
and Adam comeing up with the A team starting here
at two o'clock in just a couple of minutes. I'm
(02:36:34):
gonna hold out hope that something happens because I'm with John,
like I'm just I'm getting like trade envy. Everybody else
is making all these cool trades, and this feels like
this happens with the Houston Texans always, and there's been
more and more and more deadline deals. Maybe he's not
feeling the heat. Maybe he's feeling very secure in his job.
Maybe there is a thin line between urgency and desperation,
(02:36:57):
and he doesn't need to be I don't think he
needs to be desperate, but I think he needs to
be urgent. I think especially when you when you've added
the fact that it's not only that the team can
get better internally, it's that your divisional opponents are getting better,
the teams that you are trying to beat. The team.
You have two games against the Indianapolis Colts and they
are improving. You have the do You have the Jaguars
(02:37:18):
in town this week and they got better with Jacobe Myers.
Don't know what kind of impact he's gonna have with
only a couple of days practice and going out there
and getting a feel for the offense. But you're battling
it out with them, not only for the division, which
you're probably lost already to the Colts, but for an
AFC wildcard. So yeah, I would like to see something
(02:37:45):
happen here because this is a not complete team. You
can't if you say we're gonna dance with who brung ya, well, yeah,
you're gonna end up seven and nine. Then if you're
dancing with this is who who who got brought right
now on this roster, so they need to improve. This
is not you are not anywhere close to the Colts.
(02:38:05):
You're not anywhere close to the Bills or the Chiefs.
In my opinion, you're close to the Broncos who were
seven and two. We saw that this last week, so
I understand. But then we're talking about the Steelers. Are
the Ravens gonna come back with with Lamar Jackson? What
about the New England Patriots? How legit are they? They've
won six games in a row now, it's been a
(02:38:27):
fairly soft schedule as of late. Saints, Titans, Browns, Falcons
weren't great for the but they beat the Bills. They
beat the Panthers who were five and four. So yeah,
not only improving internally, but keeping up with those other
teams in the AFC who are improving as well. That's
(02:38:51):
why I would like to see a trade in the
next hour from Nick Cassario and the Houston Texans. You
want to continue talking about it, you can do it
with Adam and Adam they are coming up next. That's
gonna do it. For the Matt Thomas Show with Ross
here on Sports Talk seven ninety Ross Virriale saying, thank
you so much for listening to the program. I do
appreciate you. Thank you to Matt Thomas for hanging out
for the first three hours, not hanging out, he host
(02:39:12):
of the show. Thanks Jonathan Allen for being here for
the duration. I will talk to you folks next tomorrow
toen Am on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Mat'll
be joining from Memphis right now. It's to Adams, will
the Texans make a trade? Keep it right here on
your home for your home teams that actually win championships.
