and I was just in a very foul mood, very
very disappointed. Not that I expected the Rockets to go
to Golden State win to win two. I fully expected
them to win at least one, and the one with
no Jimmy Butler in Game three, especially hurt okay, and
then watching the Rockets get opportunities after falling behind by

double digits two different occasions, including the awful eighteen to
one started the third quarter, and they fought back from
that and had a chance in the final minute to
I and or win the basketball game. M HM and
Alpie's mid range did not fall, defended well by Draymond Green.
Freddie Reed tries to curl on the right side three
limited time, being chased by a bunch of folks that

wasn't going to go in either. You had the Dylan
Brooks foul. So there was just a lot of aggravation
and disappointment. And I got on the plane and I
put I had my pillow, and I had my blanket,
and I wouldn't do a peaceful slumber.

Rockets are winning tonight. Oh okay, okay, I'm on board

with it. I hope you're right now. If we were
in the show in San Francisco, I wouldn't put my
name on it, because I mean it is what it is.
Golden State has the Rockets number. I mean, they've only
beaten the Rocket The Rockets have only beaten the Warriors,
and not getting different teams obviously, have only beaten the
Warriors once in these last ten years on the road.
So the percentages are vastly against that. And look, Golden

State is the significant favorite still in this yeries. When
you have three to one and you still have one
more home game left for a built team that's been
so good at home during the playoffs, the likelihood of
them winning the series is not good. But I'm not
worried about that. I'm worried about Game five tonight, and
I'm paying my name on it. Okay, Rockets beat the Warriors,

you don't have to do that. I'm not here to
convince you for the next two hours and two an

Here's what's driving driven me? Absolutely but bonkers free throws,
free throws. It isn't about technique, It isn't about form.
Well no, because it's about concentration. I could tell you

We go shoot free throws at the training facility for
an hour and a half and they can make ninety
percent of the shots. There's just a level of difference
when you're doing it in front of eighteen thousand people

it's inconsistent. He falls forward, sometimes he falls back, he
falls the side. He's gonna stop with the league to

it's been so far in this series has been very disappointing.
And not that you're expecting to make one hundred percent,
but Rossie if they let me look at their number,

The Rockets in this playoff series have made sixty three
percent of their free throws Rossie. If they shoot their

season percentage, they win at least one of the games
they've lost. That's what would that be fair to say?
I think that would be fair to say. I think
they would have won Game four on Saturday, I mean Monday.
Golden State in this three game series, four game series,
for ex excuse me, has scored four hundred and two points. Okay,
the Rockets have scored three hundred and ninety three. Four

or not he might be thinking about a lineup change
or a rotation change.

feel like if Golden State can do it, because they've
thrown four different lineups at the Rockets in this series
in four games, why can't the Rockets do it?

At the end of the game, Coachydoka said, I'm gonna
have Tarry Easton on the floor over Jalen Green, even
with a few seconds left. He said, nope, this guy

offense for defense or anything like that. He said, I
am putting I'm keeping Jalen Green off the floor.

get why he just became an innocent bystander in the game,
more so than any other game of the series seven,
I could not I was floored when I was doing
the postgame show and I looked at the game book
that we get and it saw that he played seven
minutes in the fourth quarter. I was like there. I
literally went to go like red downloaded. I thought there

was a typo. I list Seriously, I'm not even joking.
I'm not making a joke. I thought there was a
typo that he played seven minutes in the fourth quarter.

He was a ghost.

Zero points, zero assists, one tower rebounds, one foul, no nothing,
not even a turnover. It means he didn't even touch
the ball. I couldn't believe it, couldn't believe it. And
that's not what he's here for. That's not why the
Rockets drafted him, that's not why the Rockets extended him
in the in the preseason, and it's just it's been
a massive disappointment, except for one one game where he

was incredible. Yeah, and guess what, that's the Jalen Green
experience we've been getting the last couple of years. The
Jalen Green takeover is as fun to watch, oh man,
because he's coming, he's fighting off screens, he's going against
triple teams. He's going to the lane, flipping the ball
over his right shoulder, he's reversed, laying up, he's hitting
the mid range jumper, he's hitting the side pocket three.

It's contested and it still goes in. But reality is,
in this series, there hasn't been enough of that.

year to make this rotation go. I mean he and
when you're the third pick of the draft, you're supposed
to be a guy that's supposed to be an impact maker. Now, granted,
last year's draft, pound for pound, was not very good.

was named Rookie of the.

Well, at least they were locked in on Reach Epperd

gonna be like you said Reach yet. It's not gonna
be Jeff Green, not gonna be Jack Landale. Certainly, we

and in the post game. You have to be really
disciplined in the playoffs. Again, and by the way, defensively,
Golden State would be able to put the kybosh on Witmore.

It is incredible how a little bit of difference in
this series. A few intangibles we were talking about. There's
a nine point discrepancy between the Rockets and the Warriors
in these four games, and that can be free throws,
and that certainly has been a huge part of that.
I was telling the audience and maybe you can back
me up on this as as a former player. You
can go to a practice facility, you can go to
game day and shoot around and shoot five hundred free

throws and make four or ninety eight of them. It's
a different animal when you got eighteen thousand people screaming
at you.

up and down for me because you know, I mean,
one minute we're playing well and playing like we you know,

then the next minute were playing like we tight, like
we're trying to like play just to preserve the just

to keep doing what you did to get the lead.
Just keep playing, you know what I mean, if that
means blowing somebody out in the playoffs, just keep playing,

to get the lead.

both plus when it comes a run differential, the Rangers
are a minus three. The Athletics, who are five hundred

good friend Brian bogus Eevic, who is a television star
in Space City Home Network and he's a star here
on Sports Talk seven ninety on a weekly basis. He
joined us every Wednesday at all eleven o'clock. Hey, Brian,

(34:01):
we were just talking about this a few minutes ago.
The Astros. Look, it's been a it's been better, obviously,
but it's about a five hundred team so far, give
or to take a couple of games. But the amount
of wins against quality opponents, this has been pretty stout.

Speaker 4 (34:14):
You knock off the Mets, you got the.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
Podrason, You've taken the first two games against the best
team at least record wise in the American League.

Speaker 8 (34:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (34:22):
I think it's a very encouraging thing that some of
their best ball has been played against the better teams.
You know, oftentimes when we see teams coming in to
play the Astros and you're looking at you know, what
have they done over the past week or two. You know,
a lot of times teams who look like they're hot,
you know, have come off a series where they've been
playing Colorado or the White Sox or somebody of that nature.

(34:44):
So when you're beating good opponents, when you're beating teams
that you know, pitch very well, hit very well, and
kind of have all around game, I think if the
sign that number one, the Astros are are starting to
play better. But really we know what kind of team
is in there and when it all comes around, what
they can be, and that's a team that can stand

(35:05):
toe to toe with anybody. I don't think there was
any question that that was in there. It was just
a question of when are we going to see it
and then how consistently can we see it once it
comes out?

Speaker 3 (35:14):
And the fact I also love it. Not only are
you beating the good teams, but you were fell behind
in both games against the Trent and put together these
crooked number innings. I think we've seen more crooked number
innings than the Astros in the last week. Brian, then
you saw in the first three or four weeks of
the season.

Speaker 5 (35:27):
Yeah, it's nice to see that there are different paths
to victory for the team. You know, it seemed like
the wins that they were getting early it was you know,
we're going to have one inning where we score a
couple of runs and then you know, We're going to
basically turn it over to the pitchers and try to
hang on for dear life to see the fact that

(35:47):
they can extend leaves, then add on late. You know,
have an inning where they score on a big hit
to drive in a couple runs, but then maybe get
another hit or two later like they did yesterday, or
just you know, we can get down early and if
our pitcher lets it hanging around, we can go beat
up on a bullpen and have a win. You know,
you've got to be able to win multiple ways. And

(36:09):
I think even even when we see the best version
of this team, it's going to be very pitching forward
and they're going to be a pitching in defense first team.
But they've got to be able to outlug people every
once in a while. And I think it's nice to
see that the offense can kind of lead the way
when need be.

Speaker 3 (36:27):
Brian Bogosivic with us here on Sports Talk seven ninety
and there's been some shuffling in the lineup. Let's just
start philosophically first, what do you think about how big
of a deal it is for a team with lineup
construction and also for a player individually where you're going
to be in the lineup.

Speaker 5 (36:45):
I think it is a big deal, and it isn't
a big deal. You know, it's not a big deal
in that you're going to find some magic formula and
everything's just going to fall into place.

Speaker 1 (36:56):
Right.

Speaker 5 (36:56):
The way that the offense is going to start being
best version of itself is going to be you know,
a collection of individuals getting it going themselves. But and
that's not just going to happen because if you put
them in a certain order. However, you know, doing things
on a day to day or week to week basis
to maximize what what is going right is always a

(37:19):
good thing. And also, you know, doing things to get
guys a little bit more comfortable, you know, the thing
without two D if he felt like he was being
rushed coming in in the top half of the first
inning to hit, then you know, make him feel comfortable
and maybe that gets going a little bit. You know.
It's it's playing mind games as well as playing you know,

(37:40):
match up type of games, and that's you know, kind
of the the art of being a manager is you've
got to to manage people and it's not just okay,
what what does what do the numbers look like? On
paper say that that it should be. I think it's
also you know, telling to to the quality of people

(38:00):
they have in the clubhouse that everybody's open to it.
You know, there there are a lot of teams and
a lot of players across the league where if you
start messing with guys and you know, move a guy
from first to third, or from from third to sixth
in the order, whatever, you know, it'll it'll put them
into pout mode. And that is not the case with
anybody in this team. And I think you know, the

(38:20):
number one reason for that is that jose Al Tuve
is the guy who's most open to whatever needs to
be done. Uh So, so it's nice to see that
the players are giving the coaches the leeway to go
and move some things around.

Speaker 3 (38:35):
And one of the things that's been moving around is
Christian Walker bumped down. He's been hitting a lot better,
so we're seeing some home runs from him as well.
What do you seeing from his approach and swings that
that is making this improvement?

Speaker 5 (38:47):
Uh confidence, I the swing doesn't necessarily look any different
than it did. Uh The swinging decisions certainly look better,
and a lot of that has to do with trusting
him self and just trusting that he's fine. You know
when when you're looking up at your batting average and
it says one fifty, you know, it just puts that doubt.

Speaker 8 (39:07):
In your mind.

Speaker 5 (39:07):
I'm like, man, maybe maybe I'm not seeing it. Well,
maybe my swing isn't going to be there if the
ball does show up in the middle of the plate.
But if you all of a sudden believe that you're
going to recognize and swing at good pitches and take
tough pitches, and you believe that if you swing at
a heater down the middle, your barrel is going to
get there, you know, all of a sudden, you can
be freed up a little bit. And he looks very

(39:29):
free and the swings that he's taking, obviously, the balls
that he's hitting and driving, they look good. You know,
he's had some balls that he's you know, souled off
that he's taken really aggressive, you know, convicted types of swings.
He doesn't look like he's feeling for anything anymore, which
is where he was for the first you know, fifteen
twenty games, when he was when he was searching for something,
and it looks like he found whatever it was he

(39:51):
was searching for.

Speaker 3 (39:52):
Buggie the roster construction. You know, there's been a lot
of managers over the years that have always trying to
give at least one left in their bullpen. Some teams
go without it. I know the Astros, even during part
of their heyday, would go without a left handed reliever.
The Astros have bucked that trend with all the guys
that can go from the south ball side of things.
First of all, are you intrigued by that? And is

(40:12):
are we going to see a new trend? Because it
feels like to me was still predominantly a Ryan handed
hitting lineup, But like the Detroit had, you can definitely
use that to your say, left hand hitting lineup. You
can use that to your advantage in terms of being
able to try to mix things up a little bit,
especially if you've got teams that you'll be coming up
with a primary left hand handed lineup.

Speaker 5 (40:32):
Yeah, it'll certainly play in fear favor when you have
those lefty dominant lineups that you're facing. I've always been
a proponent of you want the best guys you know,
and of course you want different looks in different matchups,
but you know, not at the sake of quality stuff
and They were kind of in a situation coming out

(40:52):
of spring training where it was let's just take our
best guys and we'll figure it out from there. Now,
you know, you get the four lefties. You know, Hater,
don't even put him into that conversation. His role is closer.
We know what that is. It's been a really positive
thing that both Brian King and Steven Okert have been
good against righty's, especially o Kurt. You know, the kind

(41:14):
of book on him coming in was really good against lefties.
You know, don't know how he's going to be against Righty's. Uh,
he's dominated both. So now all of a sudden, you
don't need those guys to be matchup type pitchers. They're
more leverage type pitchers. And then throw Susan in the
midst where you can, you know, spot him into places

(41:34):
where you like him for different parts of the lineup.
So it gives Joe a lot of options to play
the handedness matchup and the platoon matchup. But what it's
also been is Brian King and Steven Okert kind of
emerging as guys that we can lean on at the
end of games. Also, so, yeah, best guys are going

(41:55):
to get the biggest innings, and they've got guys who
have who are making cases be to be those guys.

Speaker 3 (42:00):
We're about to see a six man rotation coming up
with the limit number of off days, and whether that's
Blue Ball who gets the start as in that group,
or whether Lance mccullors.

Speaker 4 (42:07):
Takes that spot.

Speaker 3 (42:09):
How do you massage that you're going to be down
an arm in the bullpen? What are your general thoughts
about a six man rotation and how much do you
think that Joe's got to differently manage because of the
fact he's got one less guy to go to.

Speaker 5 (42:22):
Yeah, it it becomes a necessary thing, you know, when
you have these stretches of you know, sixteen seventeen games
in a row and then it adds up to you know,
it's like a twenty five and twenty four days or
twenty four games and twenty five days whatever. That takes
a toll on a pitching staff, and especially when you
have a guy, you know, with Naski, he threw like

(42:43):
eighty innings last year. He's not going to be able
to throw one hundred and sixty one hundred and eighty innings.
So you're going to have to massage it at some point,
it all comes down to what kind of lamps are
you getting out of your starters, And with you know,
Hunter Brown, you know, seemingly being a lock for six
plus innings. Fromber's been that way for most of the
last three years. If you can consistently get those guys

(43:07):
deep to where you're not overextending the guys in the bullpen,
then you'll be fine. If all of a sudden it starts.
It starts, you know, you get a three inning start,
a two inning start where where it throws the bullpen
into flocks, and all of a sudden you're eating up
innings and you're having to bring in Josh Hater in
a situation to where you just need somebody to throw.
That's where you get yourself into trouble. But it was

(43:29):
going to happen at some point because of a scheduling
and b just trying to limit some innings for guys.
And you know, maybe you're gonna have to lean into
pictures every once in a while and tell a starter
you know you're gonna have to push to one hundred
or one hundred and five. You know, I would especially
point to Hunter and Fromber as guys who you can

(43:50):
lean into a little bit more heavily. But yeah, it's
something that you know is going to have to happen
at some point in the season, and you just hope
your starters can can hold the line for it.

Speaker 3 (44:03):
Cam Smith's with the day off yesterday, Brian, what have
you been seeing from Amy had that big two home
run game, but things have slowed for him since.

Speaker 5 (44:11):
Yeah, it's it's still a work in progress. You know,
it's still a lot of the same things that he's
been working on from the start of the season. Right
he's trying to get a little more rhythm pre pitch,
which will allow him to get started on time, which
will allow the bath head to get out front. You know,
when your primary focus as a hitter is I'm trying

(44:34):
to get the bat out and get to the fastball,
you can also become susceptible to breaking balls, and sometimes
you can get caught in this little in between where
you're not quite out there to really get on the heater,
but at the same time, you're sped up enough to
where you're not laying off the breaking balls. So this
is why it's really difficult to learn at the major

(44:55):
league level because you're not going to get mistakes to
help you out along the way you're not going to
get you know, guys, you know, a start day from
a guy who doesn't really belong. You're just getting nasty
stuff every day. So he he is better. It is
much better than it was at the start of the
season in terms of where his contact point is and

(45:17):
where he can hit the ball, you know, driving the
ball in the middle of the field. But he's still
trying to get going a little bit and get that
bad hat out front.

Speaker 3 (45:26):

Lance mccullory is going to start on Sunday. Boy, this
has been a long, winding, confusing, aggravating road for lm jane.
He's going to finally get the opportunity to get back
on that mound for the first time and quite some time.

This is I'll be honest with you, I don't know
that I can think of anybody who's had that much
time off.

Speaker 3 (45:52):
You know, who's anybody who's.

Speaker 5 (45:53):
Who's down for more than a year plus. It's almost
like you never see them come back. And this is
as big of a as this is for the team
and the organization, you just got to be happy for
the guy. I mean what it's like to come back
from injury, what it's like to rehab, go down to
Florida and rehab on your own, show up at the
field and do all your work before the rest of
the team is there. Like it sucks and it's miserable,

it's depressing. So I'm just happy for Lance that he
gets to come back and get back out there on
the mound. And you know, add into the fact that
if he's right, that's a damn good arm that you're
adding into that rotation. So that's exciting news.
