Speaker 1 (00:02):
Lunchtimers. This is the Matt Thomas Show. All right, we're
gonna try this again.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Good morning everyone, It is ten oh seven on Sports
Talk seven ninety Matt Ross with you here.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
Ross, Good morning to you.
Speaker 3 (00:17):
Can you hear me Matthew?
Speaker 1 (00:18):
Yes? Or I can't clear as a bell?
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Okay, great, I can hear you?
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Nice, Yeah, we got We have some glitches and that's
gonna happen unfortunately, uh.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Huh from time to time, including my clock still saying
nine oh seven.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
That's fine.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
We get that worked out. Hey, the show must go
on and we're gonna continue with great radio. Here on
the program, we had a little prayer for you, the
Greater Wretha Franklin ready to go, and our efforts to play.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
That was somewhat successful.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
But we were saying small prayers for a man Thompson.
We were saying small prayers for the one and only.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
Christian Walker as he came back to Houston.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
And the quote I got from Brian McTaggart was okay,
not great, will be fair to say. I thought it
was mostly positive, mostly no strain. We're all good. Ramp
him back up. He says, he feels relatively the news
the diagnosis was relatively.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
Pretty good, relatively pretty good.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
I mean I hate when somebody says relatively on something
like the dinner was relatively good. Well, well, well something
obviously went wrong at the dinner, you know what I mean,
Like we have the meeting, go with your boss, relatively well,
relatively good.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Yeah, it's one of those situations. I was like, okay,
that's fine. So we are relatively on the air. I
think I know we're firnt. I think we're fully on
the air. Fully Okay, that's good, that's good.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
Connor E. Mc governor is our producer, through no fault
of his own.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
Just again, a few glitches here and there, but I
think we're all settled and we're gonna take you until
eleven to fifty this morning for Astros Baseball on Sports
Talk seven ninety as the Astros are back in action
spring training game today and we'll have it for you
with Cam Smith. The askers are playing in Dunedin against
the Blue Jays and look forward to having that call.
(02:09):
That'll be an eleven to fifty start time. We still
have at ten fifty today. I didn't think we're gonna
do this. And hear from him because now he's a
Yankees doing well. But Garrett on a Mobile is gonna
join us on the show today because apparently Garrett Cole
sports r V. Yeah you didn't see the pre show tweet,
and that's fine. Garrett Cole is going to have Tommy
John surgery.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Allegedly he's gonna have Tommy John surgery and we're gonna
get him on the air.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Yeah, there's a very we get the best guess on
this radio show. Wow, we don't get Texans. We get
everybody else on that's true. Garrett, Garrett Cole on a
Mobile join us today on the radio show, and then
we have to tell the truth at eleven thirty and
then we'll send you over to Astros Baseball. Lots of
things to get to on the show today, including a
man Thompson. Hope he's feeling okay. The news on him
(02:56):
I thought was relatively good. I was a little nervous
about it being definitely bad.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Relatively yeah, relatively good. I almost got him a triple double.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Yeah, ten to fourteen days. Sounds like he is out
the left ankle sprain. I tend to when I hear
those numbers, I tend to go on the higher end
of that, just to be super super safe. So you're
looking at probably about I don't know, seven games, give
or take. I feel like the Rockets are playing games
every other day for the next couple of weeks, including
(03:29):
four this week and then a road trip to Florida.
But hopefully have him ready for those meaningful games against
the West Coast teams in the final two weeks of
the season. But no structural damage on the MRI, which
is a good sign. Again, we talked about Christian Walker
not swinging a bat for a few days. He was
running with his teammates yesterday. It's gotta keep himself in
(03:50):
physical shake. I gotta keep the cardio going sports RV
like we do, and that's good on that. We do
have the Rockets against the Orlando Magic tonight. We have
the University of Houston finishing off a nineteen and one
conference schedule beating the Bear Baylor Bears in Waco late
Saturday night.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
We have the Texans getting.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
A new contract with one of their old player, Sheldon
Rankins has a one year deal worth seven million dollars.
How about a guy Rossa played seven games last year
because of illness and apparently a hamstring of some sort
of some of their injuries, and uh, yeah, you're looking
around trying to find jobs, like you if you've been
(04:32):
let go from a place of employment and you're just
lucky to have a job, you know what I mean.
He gets a job and he gets seven million dollars.
Get your kids to play football, Just have one or
two great seasons and you can you can, like, uh,
you can feed off that for many many years after.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
It's almost like you can just be a world class
athlete and beat up your body for years.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
It's almost like if you're a singer and have five
six hits, you could put a casino beat for like
four or five years after that.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
Yeah, it takes a little bit of singing talent as well.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Well, I mean, I'm I'm thinking about going on tour myself,
so you are, yeah, what are you gonna do? Probably no, no, no,
I'm not evil. Cadievl Ross, Sorry about that.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
NFL free agency is underway and there is some serious
money being spent on wide receivers on cornerbacks, which has
a local angle to it. And then Josh Allen got
ridiculously rich over the weekend too. Yes, he did two
(05:39):
was a two point fifty guaranteed.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
That's pretty good. Deshaun Watson's like holled, my, wait a minute,
what happened to me? I thought I was the highest
guarantee guy. And then of course you have him.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Hurt and not very good, and hurt and not very good,
and then really hurt and sounds like he may even
missed the entire next season.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
So uh man, it's you know, there's.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
A lot of greatness to owning a sports franchise, namely
because you make incredible amounts of money even if you
make baffling terrible mistakes. But you have to understand, if
you're a sports owner, you're going to pay a variety
of athletes hundreds of millions of dollars hopefully to be
successful and help you win, but it's also going up.
(06:21):
You're also going to pay hundreds of million dollars ross
for those guys never to play again, like, for instance,
when the Rockets were in stage one, the early stages
of the rebuild.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
Remember when John Wall was here. Yes, I think Tillman
paid John Wall over forty million dollars never to step on.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
The court the second year. Yeah, you have to.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
Yeah, that's right. He did play something.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
You have to basically just swallow your pride and just
don't even look at the books.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Well more so, Yeah, NBA owners and in Baseball Baseball
owners like Jose Abray, you and Rafael Montero. Well, Montero's
at least given an allars.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
I mean he's gonna I think he's gonna have a
have to make the team, right, I mean it's something
like the bullpen is still very much up for grabs here.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
Yeah, well the bullpen is thin. Just say it. Yeah,
it's thin.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
After the eighth and ninth guys.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Yeah, and you are you had a new left Canada
the mix as the Astros picked up a late acquisition.
Will Tay Martin about that, But yeah, I think you
have to know that with all of the perks of
being a celebrity and owning a sports team and being
able to be in the war room and be able
to make decisions and oh, by the way, the insane
(07:29):
amount of cash that you're making, insane amount of cash,
that you're gonna have to swallow a bunch of bad deals.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
Every sports team has to go through it.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
Deshaun Watson, great example, John Waller, great example, and Garrett Cole.
I mean, isn't it in reality? And we're gonna talk
to Garrett a mobile coming up a ten fifty. But
don't you think Ross, it's gonna take two years for
Garrett Cole to get back to where he was as
as long as everything works out well in his rehab.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Pretty much, that's basically what it is for for Tommy
John these days. But people do come back and they're fine.
It's it's it's kind of well, I get more than
a bump in a row. I guess you could call it.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
That's right.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
But for the most part, guys come right back, all right.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
Uh seven one three two one two five seven Nati
is how you reach our show today? We have a
short show today just till eleven fifty, So please come
in and say hello to us on a variety of
things if you like to. Whether it be Christian Walker,
whether it be a Man Thompson, whether it be Rockets,
whether it be the Texans making some moves. And there
is a move in the NFL free agency from a
team named the Charlotte the Carolina Panthers, that a certain
(08:40):
Texan is going to love to hear about. Seven one
three two one two five seven natives how you reach
a show seven one three two one two five seven ninety.

(09:54):
Thomas Show with Ross on Sports Talk seven ninety ten
nineteen not Sports Talk seven ninety is the Matt Thomas
Show with Ross. We are with you today until eleven fifty.
So if you'd like to come in and say hello,
you may do that at seven one three two one
two five seven ninety seven one three two one two
(10:15):
five seven ninety So what uh got.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
You up and running this weekend? All the different sports headlines? Ross?
What do you want to start with in this second
number two of the show. How about the.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
Josh Allen re signing.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Okay, what you get? I think it's great.
Speaker 3 (10:35):
I think uh, two hundred and fifty million dollars is
pretty insane. Three hundred and thirty is the coraz The
whole deal is worth.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
That's correct. Two fifty is guaranteed. So if he never
takes a snap ever again for the Buffalo Bills, he's
got two hundred and fifty million dollars coming his way.
And remember, I think is the highest guarantee before that
was DeShawn right or among them all time guaranteed highs.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
Yes, man, that's.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
He had four years left on his deal.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
This shows me a the NFL revenues are about to
go astronomically higher than they already are. Probably bills are
trying to catch him before. We're talking about seventy five
million dollars a year for a quarterback. I mean, we're
getting close, aren't we.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
It feels like it. Dak Prescott. Now, this deal still
isn't higher AAV than Dak Prescott, which is crazy to say. Yeah,
which was what He's sixty million dollars a year. This
is fifty five million AAV for Josh Allen. So still
Dak Prescott is making more per year than Josh Allen.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
Yeah, So I wonder why Dak. I wonder why Josh said, well,
I'm better than Zach. I mean, Dak, why can't I
get that money?
Speaker 3 (11:50):
I mean, I would say the most guaranteed money in
NFL history probably didn't hurt.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
Well.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
The reality is this, and I know that people get
turned off by money conversation, but we're talking about the
number of people in this world that get that kind
of money or what at in sports. Less than one
percent of the of the sports world population.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
Correct, yes, very much less. And so we have.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
I mean, less than one percent of the world are
mega billionaires and make incredible amounts of money running fortune
five of our companies. I mean, if you're running Coca
Cola Ross, you're aren't you making obscene money? Aren't If
you're running an airline, you're running If you were running
an investment firm, I mean, aren't you.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Making just insane money? Mm hmmm.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
We just don't happen to care about that concept because
we don't talk about financial stuff. We talk about sports, correct,
So I don't really necessarily go, oh my god, this
world of sports in which we live in sucked. It's terrible.
I don't want to watch it again. I tend to
do this, and maybe I'm guilty, is that if somebody
is good and successful and they win. I mean, put
(12:57):
it this way, the Buffalo Bills are going to pay
two hundred and fifty million dollars in guarantee money. The
Buffalo Bills are getting a brand new stadium in Buffalo
after waiting for decades to get it.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
Well, they're gonna be cash.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
Rich with all the festivities and all the things that
come along with that stadium.
Speaker 1 (13:11):
I'm sure they got a pretty good sweetheart.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
Deal because they wanted to keep the Bills in Buffalo
long term.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
Yeah, they're doing okay financially.
Speaker 1 (13:17):
I'm not overly concerned. I'm just not. And remember, if
they get the Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
Do you think anybody in Buffalo is gonna care that
Josh Allen makes two hundred and fifty million dollars in
guarantee cash.
Speaker 1 (13:28):
No.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Now, if things go south, here's the reality. If you do,
if he does get hurt or he does not perform
up to expectations, I e. Deshaun Watson in Cleveland, it
cripples your franchise. Yeah, but Josh, yeah, Josh Allen's a
safe for bed. But as I say that and I go, well,
(13:51):
this move right here could cost you know, the buff
the Cleveland Browns for franchise. Guess what happened over the
weekend for the Browns. Miles Garrett gets along a long.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
Term deal forty million dollars a year.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
My Miles Garrett like four days ago, Ross like, I
don't know if I want to go in Cleveland. I
want to meet with the owner of the owners. Like, Nah,
we don't need to meet. I'll let I let the
general manager handle week.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
He said, you can meet this check.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
But yeah, general Mandresses, here's a blank check. Miles, enjoy
it right out for what you want.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
Look, we don't care if George Coley makes thirty million
dollars a picture if the picture's.
Speaker 1 (14:26):
Good, right, Hm, well he can make a few bombs.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
May We don't care. Bradley Cooper's doing his bit. He
make some money with money Gaga. Nobody's complained about it.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
By the way, Bradley Cooper on the first season premiere
of Righteous Gemstones last night, Oh really, yeah, I.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
Thought you gave up on that show.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
I did, man, I and I went back, and I'm
disappointed that I did.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
They did a prequel episode yesterday. Okay. I don't want
to spoil because people A. I probably haven't seen it yet.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
So I watched the first couple episodes and I liked it,
but I didn't kind of. I didn't fall through with it.
I guess it didn't. It didn't hook me enough.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Uh, you're not missing anything, Danny McBride to me, and
this is the character that you know, he pays basically
the same one note.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
Yeah, yeah, but there's no great note.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
But it's it's like Eastbound and down Ross to me
was insanely funny. Yes, Vice principles kind of got tired
after a while.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
I kind of live with that. The righteous Gemstones just
how do you.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
At all people know it's getting worse? Means it's just
way out of whack. There's it's so the comedy of
it is so.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
Gone that it's a farce. It's just trying to gross
you out.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
Farcial, Yeah, farcial. I don't believe I've ever said that
word in my fifty two years of my life.
Speaker 1 (15:55):
You haven't. No, Okay, there's always time no farces. I
don't know seventh grade word.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
I don't disagree with that. I'm just saying I haven't
used it. I try to keep it. I try to
keep it to two syllables or less. Sports service, Okay,
I'm sorry.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
It comedy bad, crazy, too much.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
Just I guess it's just too over the top, all right,
seven one five, seven, And let's talk to Anthony and
deer Park on the Matt Thomash old Ross Anthony, good
morning to you.
Speaker 4 (16:28):
Hey, good morning guys.
Speaker 5 (16:29):
Hey.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
I was just curious on y'all thoughts with the cost
of quarterbacks increasing. Just curious if you guys ever see
the NFL getting away from their heart salary cap and
going something more similar to what at the MLB does.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
Eating you put you pay a threshold, you pay a
tax if you go over.
Speaker 3 (16:50):
The limit, right, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
You know it's funny. It had to be collectively bargained.
I know the players would like to see that happen.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
I just don't know. I don't know. I if it
ain't broke, don't fix it. I guess it would be
the case.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
I like the hard cap. I mean you keep smaller
markets can have great team like Kansas City has been
a dynasty. I mean you've had Green Bay, the Green
Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers. Like it's not all New York
and l a R. Right, not that it all is
in the NBA or in Major League Baseball, but there
is that ability for it to happen. I think every
(17:27):
league should be hard capped, in my opinion.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
Yeah, from a fans perspective, you want to you're a
smaller market team, you are rooting hard for hard cap
because as good as the Royals are, and I know
they signed Bobby Wood Junior to a long term deal,
but they don't do a lot of that. I mean,
when was the last mega deal that since Andny Red's ever.
Speaker 3 (17:45):
Signed with anybody, uh king Griff J Yeah, thirty years
twenty years ago.
Speaker 2 (17:50):
Johnny Bench got a nice deal back in the seventies,
but that's Pete Rose got his deals.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
But yeah, there's strange things.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
About the NFL, and it's hard to figure out what
it's a cap and what's guaranteed, and what's the salary,
what's a signing bonus and renegotiations. But it feels like
that everybody's got a puncher's chance. We're in the NBA,
you don't because you've got teams that are willing to
pay thresholds. And you also have situations where free agency,
(18:21):
nobody wants playing at Utah. Very few players want to
go to Sacramento. Hardly anybody wants to go to Charlotte.
I kind of like the fact that Green Bay is
as appealing of a free and destination as say, Charlotte is,
as as Los Angeles as is. What's another town that
wouldn't be I don't know what's can I mean Kanpasity
(18:44):
is a good example. Yeah, yeah, So yeah, if it
ain't broke, don't fix it. And I think the NFL
is the most successful league financially because they have a
good rhythm between what the owners can collect and the
percentage of money that has to go back to the players.

Zero Ross JC Horn you know who that is?
Speaker 2 (21:02):
Yes, the cornerback of they get Calada Panthers four year
contract today worth one hundred million dollars seventy MILLI guaranteed.
Speaker 1 (21:17):
Do you know who's really you know who negotiated that?
Speaker 3 (21:19):
Derek Stingley Jr.
Speaker 2 (21:21):
Well, I think he probably agrees with the negotiation.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
I don't know exactly he did it himself.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
Now we know what the price of keeping an all
pros because Horn has been that. It's basically Horn, Stingley
Gardner in that small group of super elaitue cornerbacks.
Speaker 1 (21:41):
Patrick Certain Junior's in there.
Speaker 3 (21:43):
Some might put Joey Porter Junior in there.
Speaker 1 (21:46):
Not many guys.
Speaker 2 (21:49):
Oh, Derek Stingley is I mean, he is sleeping like
a fat baby right now.
Speaker 1 (21:52):
Ross.
Speaker 3 (21:55):
He's gonna get paid whenever he went. He's eligible now
for an extension. I don't know if the Texans are
going to do it now.
Speaker 2 (22:02):
David Mullagetta, by the way, is the agent that is, kay,
But I'll tell you what do you think? And the
agent power rankings that Mullageta is more powerful than Drew
Rosenhouse these days.
Speaker 3 (22:13):
I would have to look at their rosters. I would
say on first cliance, no, but you could be right.
I'm not sure.
Speaker 2 (22:19):
I mean, I think probably Rosenhaus has more clients, but
my guess is more per athlete Mulagetta is winning.
Speaker 3 (22:26):
Mm hmmm.
Speaker 1 (22:27):
No, we have no exact number of that unless you
just chase out every single player. But oh now again,
I don't.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
It's unfortunate when when Nikossar and I go out and
have dinner and have beverages that he never tells me
with the salary cap situation is with the Texans, but
they had.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
To plan for this.
Speaker 2 (22:43):
This is I mean this money that is ultimately going
to go towards a extension towards Stingley. They had to
know what the range was, so this is probably no
huge surprise. That's a market thermometer temperature check.
Speaker 1 (22:56):
Yeah, yeah, that's right. Uh yeah, we'll see. I mean,
they gotta pay it. Stingley's good, I mean Stingley is really, really,
really good. He's eleted his position.
Speaker 2 (23:05):
He's a top five in his position, and guys that
are in the top five and you get paid like
their top five, and he very he very well. Will
Sheldon Rankings one year deal. We're seven million dollars again,
seven games last year because of injuries and illness.
Speaker 1 (23:20):
Okay, good to have him back the interior. Yeah, that
is more like that.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
That's much more of a Nick Caceo type move than
going out and spending crazy money on a cornerback.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
But they're gonna have to.
Speaker 3 (23:32):
Uh yeah, oh a corner.
Speaker 2 (23:33):
You mean, well, I'm talking about the money that he's
gonna spend. Yeah, he's It's gonna be much more of
a difficult pill to for Casarro to swallow spending crazy
money on Stinglandan.
Speaker 1 (23:44):
It was assigning the show. That Rankings deal.
Speaker 2 (23:46):
Hm, that's like, oh you know what, this guy was
pretty good for us a couple of years ago. Yeah,
he moved on, got a nice contract from the Bengals,
didn't work out.
Speaker 1 (23:55):
We got him back.
Speaker 3 (23:57):
Yeah, thirty year old intive tackle who can play on
a one year deal. That's Nick Area. He dreams of
making those kind of deals.
Speaker 2 (24:08):
Yeah, he's like, man, I cannot wake up to find
a thirty one year old it was good three years
ago and pay him two years, nine million dollars and
see what happens. Yes, and sometimes, and honestly, you sometimes
you catch lightning at a bottle. Sometimes you're like, this
guy was old and you fleeced him.
Speaker 3 (24:23):
Yeah, you can end up with like I don't know,
like a Blake Cashman who had a great year Pro
Bowl level then he got signed away. That type of deal.
That's that's what Nickosseio likes. He's like the one year
proved deals where guys play extremely well.
Speaker 1 (24:34):
And then you can move on.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
Yeah, you know, it's you have to have I mean, honestly,
if you're going to manage a salary cap, you can't
just overspend in every position. You've got to find values.
You got to fill the roster. And that's what I
think Dana Brown is trying to do with the astros.
You know he's gonna he's going to make sure I
was taking care of it Al Tuvey and you know
you signed Christian Walker for good money in a short
(24:56):
term deal.
Speaker 1 (24:56):
You gotta find value somewhere.
Speaker 5 (24:58):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 2 (24:59):
Did you see the camp Smith stuff? Just won't die
about him making their major league roster coming out of spring.
Speaker 1 (25:05):
It keeps going.
Speaker 2 (25:07):
I don't know if that's because social media is pushing it,
if it's because somebody's whispering to somebody else. Jim Bowden's like,
I think he's gonna make the team. As a matter
of fact, he might have played right field, which if
I'm Chassy Fizz, I'm looking like, man, what you I mean,
I'm trying?
Speaker 1 (25:22):
What am I? You gotta give me a shot?
Speaker 3 (25:24):
Yeah, But if you're Chezzy Fizz, you're also just Chazzy Fizz.
Speaker 1 (25:27):
I mean.
Speaker 2 (25:30):
He's like, I caught that ball in right center field
in the World Series. Doesn't that get me something? In
terms of leverage?
Speaker 3 (25:35):
What is he like twenty eight or twenty seven?
Speaker 2 (25:39):
He must find There must be a situation where the
Astros are thinking our offfield offense is gonna be Atrocian Chess.
Speaker 3 (25:46):
McCormick is twenty nine. He will be thirty on April nineteenth,
So it's not like we're waiting for some spring chicken low,
you know, the top blue chip prospect.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
Yeah, and people I put that out there yesterday and
are like, oh, you move Chazz's centerfield. I mean, if
you're gonna go with two light hitting outfielders and keep
one and putting the back, I mean, at least Myers
gives you this incredible range that not in saying that
the Chass can't give it to you.
Speaker 1 (26:11):
But Myers just has exceptional range.
Speaker 3 (26:13):
Yeah, Myers is a better defensive center fielder. Yeah, but
Chas and Theory has a better bat. Their bats were
comparable last year.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
Yes, if Chass, if Chas's bat was available of two
years ago, he probably takes Jack Myers spot in centerfield
and they give up the and they give up the
range because at this point neither one of them have
a good arm. And here's the thing we got to
talk about too, is if Chas McCormick is playing right
field and is getting it for any length of time,
is he gonna be able to get runners going and
trying to advance them.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
First the third?
Speaker 3 (26:39):
No, but Kyle Tucker didn't have an elite arm.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
So no. No.
Speaker 2 (26:44):
But but at least people and I would said, we're
fearful of it, but at least respected. I think you're
gonna see, at least early on teams trying to test
it almost immediately.
Speaker 3 (26:55):
I think you will, right, I don't know if he's
going to pass that test.
Speaker 1 (26:59):
Yeah, trust we were gonna have serious aos, aren't We
can't wait? This could be an all time AO season.
Speaker 3 (27:09):
No, no, Well, yeah, I get the old last season
was all a os and they won eighty eight games
in the division.
Speaker 2 (27:15):
Yeah, but remember they open the year own Ford. It
was like fired Dana Brown, Joe Spot is over his head. Yeah,
Alex Bregnan can't hit in April, blah blah blah blue.
Speaker 1 (27:25):
I mean, oh my god.
Speaker 2 (27:28):
M hmm aos exclusively on Sports Talk seven ninety Biscuit
ten forty on seven ninety Biscit, Good.
Speaker 6 (27:35):
Morning, Cougar Mac, Cougar Mac back, you can.
Speaker 1 (27:40):
Call me nineteen and one cougar Matt.
Speaker 6 (27:43):
Back to back baby, and I think my Ross. I
know you wrote it down, man. I said early on
that my good feeling was back to back Big twelve champs.
I think that one came through Ross. And I think
they Rockets winning fifty one games, then I'll be two
for two.
Speaker 1 (28:02):
We'll see.
Speaker 6 (28:03):
I was looking good early, but they ain't looking good now.
But let me say this, Matt, and you said it earlier.
If the players are getting the numbers that they getting
like Josh Allen and Garrett, what that tells me is, man,
we better get it used to watching Netflix and Amazon Prime,
(28:24):
and the NFL is about to make some money on
some of these TV contracts. Man, So you know, if
you know that, why wouldn't you get out in front
of it. You keep throwing out the Dak Prescott contract.
Well that's because Gared jon't wait till the last second.
Speaker 1 (28:37):
Get out in front of it.
Speaker 6 (28:39):
Listen, if you want to get it rid of a receipt,
like how you think the Cowboys tild now about signing
Michael Parsons. Now they gotta go above what Garrett got,
you know what I'm saying. And the Texans, hey, man,
don't let Stingley be the last one to get a contract,
because then you're gonna pay more, you know what I mean.
(29:00):
Get out in front of it, man, you know the
money is going up salad crap on what twenty something
this year? Next year probably gonna go up thirty. Get
out in front of it.
Speaker 4 (29:08):
Man.
Speaker 6 (29:08):
If you a smart DM like the.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
Yeah, thanks Sobiscuit for the phone call.
Speaker 2 (29:13):
The here's the issue, Ross, is that with this uh
Carolina cornerback horn getting his money and getting ahead of it,
then they basically said, let's go to the negotiating table.
I'm eligible for an up for a new extension. Let's
get this done now. If you wait one more year,
could you create a little I mean, I know you're thinking, well, okay,
(29:35):
if you wait one more year, you can make more money.
But do you also put yourself in a position where
you create some hard feelings.
Speaker 1 (29:42):
Because you don't go to the negotiating table this year.
Speaker 3 (29:46):
It's possible you can all. I mean, it's it takes
two to tango. Whether the you want to get in
front of it as an organization or whether the player
wants to bet on themselves and try to make even
more money and wait till the cap goes up.
Speaker 2 (30:04):
I guess it just ultimately depends on who you are
as a person.
Speaker 1 (30:08):
If you're like, okay, if j. C.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
Horn is getting this and I'm better than jac Horn,
whether he is or not, and whether the metrics tell
you that or not, or whether pro football focus is
you could say, all right, let me give you another
good season and look at the money I'm gonna make,
Or do I say you know what, I know what
Horn's getting. I think I'm my comps are close to his.
We get in front of Casario and say, here's what
(30:31):
we hear, here's what the value is.
Speaker 1 (30:33):
Let's get a deal done and be done with it.
Speaker 2 (30:35):
I am more of the belief again, this is everybody's
just all is that if I know what's out there,
and I've done my best, my best coming off the
best season, let's sign now, let's get this done.
Speaker 3 (30:49):
I just don't know if the Texans have the cap
flexibility right now?
Speaker 1 (30:54):
Yeah? What what was?
Speaker 3 (30:56):
I guess the question is only other recourses to hold out?
Speaker 1 (30:59):
What's putting the cap hell right now? What contract is?
Speaker 3 (31:03):
I don't know if they're in cap hell there, they
have cap space. It's not an abundant.
Speaker 2 (31:10):
Okay, so let's think about what what? What has costing
him so much?
Speaker 1 (31:13):
You got and a rookie deal.
Speaker 3 (31:15):
Yes, he's still making what like over ten million dollars
a year, right.
Speaker 1 (31:21):
But there's got to be somebody that's really holding the
Texans back.
Speaker 2 (31:25):
Who are the more expensive players. Nico's got a new deal,
and that's good. That's really good money for a receiver.
Laramie Tunzel's making big money here. I got your highest
cap hit players, Okay, Laramie tunsells cap hit twenty eight
basically twenty nine million, twenty four million for Daniel Hunter.
Speaker 3 (31:45):
Titus Howard is twenty three million.
Speaker 1 (31:47):
Oh, there's where it starts to get painful right.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
Now, Well, Shack Mason and Christian Kirk will Shack Mason's
gone and Christian Kirk has reworked. Dalton Schultz is a
fourteen million dollars cap hit. Stingley is ten yea. Even
though Stingley he's like, oh okay, he's on a rookie deal.
He's making eleven million dollars. Che Day Stroud's making ten
million dollars. Yeah, because they're very high picks, so they
get high money.
Speaker 1 (32:09):
Right right, makes a lot of sense.
Speaker 2 (32:12):
All right, more on this coming up, plus prayers for
a men as we continue. The Matt Thomas should also

Speaker 8 (34:36):
I don't know why I picked up the phone.

Kermit the Frog, make your miss niggy jokes, talk about
how I sign up a huge contract and left and
now my elbow's falling apart.
Speaker 5 (35:05):
It's all hilarious, Matt, keep it.
Speaker 2 (35:07):
Going, boy, this thing is uh injury. Yours is a
real anker. I'm sorry to hear about it. What exactly happened?
Speaker 5 (35:15):
Oh yeah, you're so funny.
Speaker 8 (35:17):
Big joke about my beautiful wife, Amy, she doesn't look
like a pig.
Speaker 1 (35:23):
And please, all right, so tell us what happened? What?
How did you suffer the injury?
Speaker 5 (35:29):
What do you mean? What happened?
Speaker 7 (35:32):
Now?
Speaker 8 (35:32):
Your cel and my elbow gripped, Matt.
Speaker 5 (35:35):
Of course that's what happened. And now I need surgery.
Speaker 8 (35:38):
And now I'm gonna miss all this time for the
New York Yankees. And you have these people like you
talking about how the Yankees just.
Speaker 5 (35:46):
Spend their way to championships.
Speaker 8 (35:48):
But I'm a real human being, Matt, and my elbow
is not going to be the same ever again. And sure,
I'm gonna make thirty five million dollars to just sit around,
but it still hurts.
Speaker 1 (36:01):
I'm sorry. I I think I've caught you a bad time.
Speaker 8 (36:04):
That's so funny, nothing, okay, what about a major injury.
They're gonna take a knife to my elbow and slice
me up like cork, and the injury is just gonna
sit here and laugh.
Speaker 1 (36:18):
Garrett with grekkomble, Garrett, what about.
Speaker 8 (36:21):
I wish I could hit you in the temple with
a four seen fastball. Yeah, but your arm doesn't work anymore,
so you can't do that. Sorry, though I'll do it
with my left hand. Sometimes you have to do that, Matt.
Speaker 1 (36:31):
So you do you use your left hand as often
as you use your right hand.
Speaker 5 (36:36):
Bro I'm alrighty.
Speaker 2 (36:38):
What about the facial hair relaxation policy that's gonna make
you feel better?
Speaker 8 (36:42):
You have to he you can go a full frothy
beard if you want to. I don't care anymore. I
used to get all upset. I wanted to have my beard.
I think it makes me look real fierce on the mound.
Now they're relaxing, But I think I look pretty good
clean shaven, and my wife Amy loves it too.
Speaker 1 (37:01):
So when are we going to see you next pitch
for the Yankees?
Speaker 8 (37:07):
Well, the swelling has to go down. I'm gonna say
probably eighteen months or so.
Speaker 1 (37:13):
Matt, all right, last question, I'll let you go.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
What will you do for the next eighteen months besides
recuper eight and to get over this with its turn
could be a very serious injury for guy your age.
Speaker 8 (37:25):
Well, I'm hoping I can still play Spanish guitara.
Speaker 5 (37:29):
That's one of my favorite hobbies.
Speaker 8 (37:33):
I also like to play video games. I like to
play the piano, and I like to construct legos.
Speaker 5 (37:40):
But you need your hands for all of those.
Speaker 8 (37:42):
Matt, Yeah, I guess I'm gonna get into bicycling.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
Can you play the piano with one hand?
Speaker 5 (37:47):
Can you think of any lego? What are leg activities
I could do?
Speaker 1 (37:51):
You could get it. You could be a unicyclist next shi.
Speaker 5 (37:55):
Yeah, but I can't juggle.
Speaker 8 (37:58):
You kids juggle nough No, No, maybe I can do
one arm juggling.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
No, Garrett, just want to wish you the very best.
I wish you were whatever.
Speaker 5 (38:10):
You just want to make fun of me.
Speaker 8 (38:12):
I'm having major surgery and you bring me on your
show in Houston, which I don't even like Houston anymore, right,
and you just want to make fun of me.
Speaker 2 (38:21):
Now, will you wear your Yankees cap for the next
eighteen months or you wear a Scott Morris cap for
the next eighteen months.
Speaker 8 (38:28):
I'm gonna wear the Matt Thomas sucks cap.
Speaker 1 (38:30):
Look all right? You know what, I've actually caught you
in a raw emotional time.
Speaker 3 (38:37):
In fact, I can't even cook anymore.
Speaker 8 (38:39):
I can't even make Derek Cole's famous pastaprima era.
Speaker 2 (38:43):
What the secret ingredients in that? Maybe pass the recipe
along to the audience.
Speaker 8 (38:47):
If you don't, why would I broadcast secret ingredients on
a radio show, Matt, even though you don't have any listeners.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
I think you're you're letting the emotions of the arm
injury effect your politeness towards me.
Speaker 5 (39:01):
This is ridiculous. Okay, I'm gonna go cry in the shower.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
We mentioned nothing but the very bad thank you goodbye.
Garrett called him bibble joining us by Connor?
Speaker 2 (39:15):
Was he kind of edgy when you called him to
begin with, to get him on the show to see
if he would join us.
Speaker 1 (39:19):
Was he was already in the bad mood to begin with?
Speaker 9 (39:21):
No, he was very polite to me. I don't know
what that was all about. So he got on here.
Speaker 1 (39:26):
Hey, Connor nices, he have you call? What's going on?
Our things? That was the family kind of thing.
Speaker 9 (39:30):
Yeah, we were chopping it up like little pals. So
I didn't see it. You must have angered him.
Speaker 1 (39:34):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (39:35):
God, I feel terrible now. I don't feel that bad,
but it is what it is, all right. Garrett Cole

Speaker 1 (43:48):
Camera Scott's a friend of the show. That's true.
Speaker 2 (43:52):
Tell all the audience how great Taylor Scott was at
astro Facts. He was really good. He was nice. He
gave your phone number, he said, let's go have some pine.

All right, uh, Aman Thompson, Uh, probably out my guest
two weeks.
Speaker 1 (44:09):
But you know in the NBA, that means quite a
few games.
Speaker 2 (44:11):
The Rockets, by the way, are home the rest of
this week and including next Monday. Uh, five straight home
games coming up.
Speaker 1 (44:19):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (44:22):
My wife's like, are you sure you can't go on
the road for some games? Just to go on a
road trip for something. I'm like, maybe you've been talking
about me being.
Speaker 1 (44:27):
Gone all this time. Hmm. Let's see how she is,
all right?
Speaker 2 (44:33):
Seven one three two one two five seven nine If
you want to jump in our conversation seven one three
two one two five seven nine zero. We've had a
variety of things on the on the agenda today, including
Aman Thompson Christian Walker running with his team but not
swinging a bat for a few days. Ross got a
Christian Walker gut feeling tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (44:53):
Oh boy, I don't like to hear this. Well, you're
gonna have to hear tomorrow eleven thirty.
Speaker 3 (45:02):
Uh maybe I'll just tune out.
Speaker 1 (45:04):
Hmmm, it would be the first time.
Speaker 2 (45:06):
Yeah, uh yeah, uh so I've gotta yeah, We've got to.
Speaker 1 (45:12):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (45:13):
I I am just of the belief and I'm not
trying to give you too much of a tease here,
but spring training time missed usually means something's going to happen.
Speaker 1 (45:21):
For this, You're gonna be behind. And I do believe.
Speaker 2 (45:24):
I do believe Major League Baseball players are on a calendar.
And I also believe that you don't want to force
you getting back into the onto the end of the
batter's box and going into the cage. You gotta let
things naturally heal. So as much as Christian Walker probably
wants to get back out there and playing some games,
getting ready for the start of the season, his body's
(45:46):
telling him otherwise, we're gonna be all right, It's gonna
be okay. Yeah, it May first, will be fine. Oh,
come on April fifteenth, will be fine. Yeah, that's better.
(46:07):
It's March tenth. Think about all these additions the askers
are going to have later in the year. You're gonna
have Christian Walker playing. Lance mccullor is going to be throwing.
I mean, I mean, it's like inheriting new baseball players
all at once.
Speaker 3 (46:20):
And the big question will be if Lance mccullors can
still get outs. He could throw, he can throw bullpens
and lie bps all he wants, but is he going
to be able to get outs at the major league level.
That's the biggest question that's going to remain, and for.
Speaker 2 (46:33):
Me, changing speeds, being able to use his second and
third pitches, because I mean, you can be able to
hum fastball, so you're blow in the face. But the
problem is majorly baseball players can have fastballs. What made
Lance mccullor is as good as he was back in
the day was his ability to ship that curveball and
(46:54):
make it utterly unhittable.
Speaker 3 (46:59):
He'll be fine. I choose to be positive about Lance
with Color's junior.
Speaker 1 (47:04):
Heay, so let's let's recamp thinks so far here?
Speaker 3 (47:07):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (47:08):
You had, and I'm talking about you, not the rest
of them. Okay, just me, just this is just you.
Speaker 3 (47:12):
Uh huh.
Speaker 2 (47:13):
You've been positive about jose Al Tuvan left field. Yes,
you've been positive about Lance mccullor's returning. Yes, you have
been positive that Christian Walker. This is just a blip
on the radar and nothing more than that.
Speaker 1 (47:26):
It's gonna be fine, relatively good news.
Speaker 2 (47:28):
I heard you have been positive that Forrest Whitley's gonna
finally make an addition to this major league team.
Speaker 3 (47:33):
I wouldn't say that, but he's been pitching well.
Speaker 1 (47:35):
Okay, all right, Um, you have been positive that what
else could be positive?
Speaker 3 (47:41):
I'm positive that Rodney Terry's going to be fired this offseason.
Speaker 1 (47:45):
Oh man.
Speaker 2 (47:48):
I did see a tweet yesterday and said, is it
would it be too much to ask Chris rad if
he wants to come back?
Speaker 3 (47:53):
Oh, that would be pretty crazy.
Speaker 1 (47:56):
You would take him on a hartbe and I know
you would in a mill asecond.
Speaker 3 (48:00):
No, I just gave pause, So not a millisecond.
Speaker 1 (48:03):
Okayque one and a half seconds. How about that? Is
that's being fair?
Speaker 3 (48:07):
It's slimy, It's very slimy.
Speaker 1 (48:10):
It's not happening.
Speaker 3 (48:13):
The charges are dropped.
Speaker 1 (48:16):
Yeah, I mean it was hashtag rough sex.
Speaker 2 (48:18):
I mean it is okay, that's see why did you
go there? Because it was the rule. It was the
rumor in the innu window, and it wind up being
pretty pretty accurate.
Speaker 3 (48:30):
No, No, nobody calls the police for that.
Speaker 2 (48:34):
Well, but people confused violence and with rough secks.
Speaker 3 (48:38):
No, the story was there was a I mean it
was about somebody got the glasses knocked off their face
and then there were strangulation and stuff like that. Matt,
I think there was a confrontation. Okay, Well, thankfully now
the woman had released a statement that it was all
her doing and he was just trying to restrain her.
Speaker 1 (48:57):
Did that happen over the weekend? With a chiefs wide
receiver too?
Speaker 3 (48:59):
By the way, Oh you mean another Longhorn legend Xavier Worthy.
Speaker 2 (49:06):
Yes, he gets arrested right away. Yes, charge was terrible.
It was like holding a family member down against their
will with the intent of uh, Kurt.
Speaker 1 (49:18):
I don't I don't know. The exact term was like
basically not a lot of domestic chilence.
Speaker 2 (49:21):
Yeah, violence, Yeah, and then I mean, like six or
seven hours later it was dropped like h Yeah, he
was trying to defend himself, right. Apparently she found out
that he was having a he had a side piece,
and she was not particularly happy about that.
Speaker 1 (49:36):
So that's when it became physical.
Speaker 3 (49:38):
And yeah, the worth these attorneys say that she had
not vacated their household for two weeks even though he
was trying to get her out. So ah, so I
guess please and thank you again. We don't know, I mean.
Speaker 1 (49:52):
Didn't work. Yeah, it's terrible. Yeah, how do we go?
How do we go from that to? I don't know
what were we talking abouts?
Speaker 4 (50:00):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (50:00):
I brought up Rodney Terry and then you brought up
Chris Beard.
Speaker 1 (50:03):
I know, I know, I don't know, I know.
Speaker 2 (50:05):
All right, So largely you have been mister positive and
the astros, and I'm right there with you. I mean,
I want them to I want all the things you
have been positive about to be accurate.
Speaker 3 (50:13):
Yeah, I'm not a doctor. I don't know how much
time Christian Walker is gonna be missing. So I'm gonna
be positive about.
Speaker 1 (50:21):
It, all right, I'm gonna be positive.
Speaker 2 (50:22):
I think cam Smith is going to be a special
player for this organization.
Speaker 1 (50:26):
How about that?
Speaker 3 (50:26):
Okay, let's go.
Speaker 1 (50:28):
There's no breaking news on that bad boy is there?
Speaker 3 (50:29):
I like that one too, mm hmm.
Speaker 2 (50:33):
All he does is slug seriously, that's all he does.
I'm not I've not seen him play defensively, so I
don't know what that's like.
Speaker 3 (50:43):
It doesn't matter. You can be a butcher over there
as long as you can hit. Well, that's Raphael de Nevers. Well,
it depends how to where that is. Is it right field?
Is it a third base?
Speaker 2 (50:53):
Does he sneak on the roster in one in one
of those two capacities?
Speaker 1 (50:56):
He doesn't play outfield? Or he hasn't played outfield?
Speaker 2 (51:00):
So yeah, I want to say, has he even played
any right field yet? And in the in baseball in
the spring training this year?
Speaker 1 (51:10):
I don't think.
Speaker 2 (51:11):
So let me look at the lineup for today and
see what he has, because I do think he made
the trip over Now I can't get the Twitter is working?
Speaker 1 (51:18):
Now? Okay, here we go.
Speaker 2 (51:21):
Astros will send uh let's see here.
Speaker 1 (51:25):
Oh I don't it's uh camps. Oh Smith is playing
third base today? Again? He's beat in second O goodness.
Speaker 3 (51:34):
He played three games in left in the Cape Cod
League in twenty twenty three. Everything else third base?
Speaker 1 (51:42):
So if he makes his team. He's going to do
it as an infielder, then one game.
Speaker 3 (51:46):
At short in as at Florida State.
Speaker 1 (51:50):
So he's got a deep he's got a deep, rich
history of playing on the left side of the infield.
Speaker 2 (51:55):
By the way, the Astros are playing the uh Toronto
blue Jays today. Will Wagner, former Astro farm hand, batting
seventh and d hing. You see, he was batting ninth
today for the Blue Jays. I did not is it
one that does it rhyme with Moei mo brafito. It
does rhyme with Moei Moprafito. He's batting ninth and playing
center field.
Speaker 1 (52:16):
Good for him.
Speaker 2 (52:17):
So the future, the savior of the Astros offense is
batting ninth for the Blue Jays today.
Speaker 1 (52:25):
Correct.
Speaker 2 (52:27):
It feels like maybe there's a little bit of embellishment
from people a little oversold.
Speaker 3 (52:32):
You know how we get all caught up with prospects.
Matt in baseball, Yeah, south Cam Smith's already in the
Hall of Fame.
Speaker 2 (52:42):
We can't know he's got his first of all, he
has his orange jacket before he was soon in the
moment he got trade, that's true. And then he is
getting and then he'll be in the getting his jersey retired.
Speaker 3 (52:54):
They're going to retire his jersey as he's playing, like
the Aggies did with that one guy.
Speaker 1 (53:01):
Oh who was that?
Speaker 3 (53:04):
Uh, they're basketball player?
Speaker 1 (53:05):
What was his name? Oh?
Speaker 2 (53:07):
Way Taylor the fourth, Yeah, or the third? I think
you know he's Way Taylor the fourth. By the way,
Aggie's in the tournament, Texas Tech in the tournament, all right,
Houston Cougar's in the tournament. Baylor, Uh, I'm Houston's SFA
one of those teams probably yeah. I mean there's gotta
(53:29):
be a Sothlin team getting in from Texas. And of
course the University of Texas in a rightful spot in
the n I T.
Speaker 3 (53:35):
I was reading that they were going to decline the
n IT invitation.
Speaker 1 (53:39):
All right, why, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (53:42):
I guess don't teams feel like it costs them money
more than to make the Oh.
Speaker 2 (53:46):
By the way, Dan Matthews says that Worthy's girl was
two timing him not She was oh okay, and he's like,
please leave. She said no, batch, I'm staying.
Speaker 1 (53:58):
And then they said please leave, okay. So we'll figure
something out.
Speaker 2 (54:05):
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven
one three, two, one two five, seven nine zero to
tell the truth bottom of the hour. You may join
us next at seven one three two one two five seven.
Speaker 7 (54:17):
Ninety Matten Ross return return on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (54:33):
All right, it is eleven nineteen on Sports Talk seven
ninety Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 1 (54:40):
We're with you till eleven fifty Today we have Astros.
Speaker 2 (54:43):
Spring training today, tomorrow full four hour show and then
a short day Wednesday and then a short day on
Friday as well as we are getting closer to the
start of the two thousand and twenty five A regular
season and very excited again of course to be your home.
Speaker 1 (54:57):
For Astros Baseball.
Speaker 2 (54:58):
So headlines of the day, we can continue to go
through a variety of things. NFL fre agency period starts today.
I think it's really where they call it legal tampering.
Why don't you just forget rid of that phrase entirely
and say, hey.
Speaker 1 (55:11):
Call us, we'll talk to you, you talk to us.
Let's go What what I mean? That's that's just.
Speaker 3 (55:15):
Like legal tampering is a dumb term.
Speaker 1 (55:19):
Yeah, I don't know what they could come up with
to call it. It's like.
Speaker 2 (55:25):
Uh uh, no crime, no crime.
Speaker 1 (55:29):
Stealing.
Speaker 3 (55:33):
Yeah, they do that decriminalized. They have decriminalized drugs, like
it's illegal to uh, you know, sell or whatever marijuana,
but up to a certain amount and then you just
get a ticket or something like that. They do decriminalize
things that are still illegal.
Speaker 2 (55:51):
But every year it's like the NFL networks, like ladies
and gentlemen walk into legal tampering.
Speaker 3 (55:56):
You know this, You call it decriminalized tampering.
Speaker 1 (55:58):
Yeah, exactly. It's just it's really weird. It's really really weird.
Speaker 2 (56:02):
So we got that going on. We have the Rockets
and Magic tonight inside Toda Center. We have Christian Walker
not swinging a bat for a few days, a men
Thompson out probably two weeks. Garrett Cole has got Tommy
John coming up. Kind of little little things going on.
We have the NCAA Tournament starting not this week, but
the week after. It is college tournament week. And there
(56:26):
continues to be this run of let's add another bracket
to the tournament, and that's add sixteen more teams to it.
Speaker 1 (56:37):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (56:38):
To me, sixty eight's plenty. It's gonna happen. It's gonna
happen because they're gonna get more money.
Speaker 2 (56:47):
Well, it's funny because everything in sports ross it's not
just we're plenty happy with what we have. Let's add
more and at some point. And in college basketball, honestly,
to me, if you really wanted to add more wrongs,
I think you keep the tournament as.
Speaker 1 (57:05):
It's sixty eight.
Speaker 2 (57:06):
You just let the Let's let these college teams go
to forty games. I mean really, I mean, I know
the the cap know at thirty five somewhere in that
range before tournament.
Speaker 3 (57:15):
Okay, some more regular season games, yeah.
Speaker 2 (57:19):
I mean, I mean, tell me, these kids are playing
twice a week. You know, it's usually a Saturday Monday
or a Thursday Saturday.
Speaker 1 (57:29):
I mean, they're still getting plenty of time. Who knows,
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (57:32):
It's just I don't want the I don't want the
I want the tournament to mean something.
Speaker 1 (57:36):
I want people to feel like it hurts.
Speaker 2 (57:39):
When you don't get in and when you when you
add another bracket of sixteen teams, aren't you basically saying
unless you suck, you're going to the tournament.
Speaker 3 (57:52):
Well, I mean you could argue I don't even think
it should be sixty eight. I'd be down to sixty four.
Maybe even more. I mean, it's a sixty fourth. What's
the lowest seed to win it all? I guess it's
happened recently, like an eight seed or something like that.
Speaker 5 (58:08):
Lately.
Speaker 1 (58:08):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (58:09):
I know that Villanova didn't I in the eighties. One
is a tense seed. If I'm not mistaken.
Speaker 1 (58:16):
They had a they had a huge upset over Georgetown.
Yeah they were. I just googled it. They were eight seed.
Speaker 3 (58:21):
Okay, Usually that's still the lowest seed to win it all.
Speaker 2 (58:25):
It's usually ones and twos, unless the tournament is played
in Houston, and then you got a bunch of randos
that nobody knows about.
Speaker 1 (58:32):
Remember what was Yukon won that one year?
Speaker 6 (58:35):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (58:35):
The last one was pretty bad? Was a Florida Atlantic.
Speaker 1 (58:39):
Florida Atlantic, San Diego State? Who else was the final?
And it shows you how little memories we have about these.
Speaker 3 (58:45):
Was it Yukon?
Speaker 5 (58:48):
No?
Speaker 1 (58:49):
I thought there were not There were four schools.
Speaker 2 (58:51):
You were klling like meh, yeah, I'll try to find it. Okay,
point being is, I just don't don't know that. You
know that you're going to be in a spot where
adding more teams is gonna add another element. I guess
it's more betting, it's more games on television. You open
it up to another television network.
Speaker 1 (59:13):
That's what it is.
Speaker 2 (59:14):
You when you see these expansions of sports, all you're
seeing basically is an opportunity to put more games on television.
Toy the NFL is gonna go to on an eighteenth week,
it's going to happen. Let's open up another slate of
games because either you're gonna make sure CBS and Fox
get their number of games because you're taking so many
away to put on Netflix and Amazon Prime. And you know,
(59:37):
whatever ESPN new deal is going to happen. So you know,
I don't know what. I don't know what to think
on this, but I love the NCAA tournament. I love
tournament week. I'll be honest with you. I love watching
the American East Championship when some never school I never
heard of, beats other school and they wind up getting
(59:57):
to go to the tournament.
Speaker 3 (01:00:00):
Is there anybody? Is there any fan like just us
regular joes who are not the presidents and the NCAA
officials and the people negotiating these TV deals. Is there
anybody who says that we want more teams in the tournament.
Speaker 2 (01:00:13):
I would say probably those would be smaller Division one schools,
Like how many Division one schools are playing basketball?
Speaker 1 (01:00:19):
Abut three hundred and fifty give or takes somewhere around there.
Speaker 2 (01:00:22):
So the percentage of so you're basically saying one out
of every six.
Speaker 1 (01:00:28):
Schools gets a shot at a national championship.
Speaker 3 (01:00:32):
That's a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:00:33):
Yeah, And the tournament, even though you have the you know,
you have the top end schools, you got your Kentucky's,
and you have your Yukons, and you have your other schools,
there are also.
Speaker 1 (01:00:45):
A lot of schools. You know, every other school has
a chance.
Speaker 2 (01:00:49):
Like, for instance, even if Miami of Ohio goes to
a perfect twelve and zero during the course of the
year wins the MAC Championship, the chance of them running
the table in a football tournament, even if they're the
Group of five champion.
Speaker 1 (01:01:03):
It's probably it's probably minimal.
Speaker 2 (01:01:04):
You can catch Miami, Ohio basketball playing really, really well
and play for six amazing games and win a championship.
Speaker 1 (01:01:13):
I mean, it's more probable.
Speaker 2 (01:01:15):
For a lesser known school to win a college basketball
national championship than it is to win a.
Speaker 1 (01:01:22):
Football national championship.
Speaker 2 (01:01:24):
Yes, so maybe there's a group of those people that
are like, you know what, Bowling Green, you were so
awesome this year.
Speaker 1 (01:01:30):
You won twenty one games.
Speaker 2 (01:01:31):
You just need to get in the dance, improve them.
How good you really are or I don't think anybody
is going. Man, I really really wish Colorado State was
in the football College Playoff because I think they can
beat Alabama in one week. I think they could beat
Notre Dame in the next week. I think they can
beat usc the following week.
Speaker 1 (01:01:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:01:50):
But even if that team does that, the smaller team,
that doesn't mean they're the best team in the country.
Speaker 2 (01:01:54):
No, it means they just won the tournament. They just
they got into a big tournament.
Speaker 1 (01:01:58):
And but that's the way. But you have to do
it that way.
Speaker 2 (01:02:00):
There's no you don't have enough of a season. You
can't play best of sevens against everybody you play.
Speaker 3 (01:02:05):
They should actually set adding more games at makes series.
Let's go sixteen best teams best best of three.
Speaker 2 (01:02:14):
You'd have a truer national champion, you would, but you'd
also you'd also eliminate just about it. I mean, if
you think the you think the Power fives or non
power fives get mad about not getting the tournament now
in the football tournam imagine when there's no chances are
getting these bad boys.
Speaker 1 (01:02:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:02:29):
The twenty three final four had Yukon, San Diego State, Florida, Atlantic,
and Miami.
Speaker 1 (01:02:35):
Say one more time. Oh, Miami was the most right Miami,
who was the four? Yukon Yukon. Oh, so, Yukon was
in it. So yeah, they won it. That's why that
was the first or two national championships I think in
a row. M hm, but you kind of.
Speaker 2 (01:02:48):
I mean, even though Yukon is a national power, it
just doesn't carry a whole lot of national cashet, Like
people aren't on the on the edge of their seats
waiting to see what Yukon's doing. By the way, there's
rumors that the Cooper Flag might stay at Duke. He's like,
if I'm gonna go to the Charlotte Hornets, the hell
with that?
Speaker 1 (01:03:08):
Hmm?
Speaker 3 (01:03:10):
Interesting.
Speaker 1 (01:03:11):
I think Cooper Flag could could make millions of dollars
next year and stay at Duke.
Speaker 3 (01:03:18):
Yeah, but first round pick I think you get. I mean,
if your one faction run has got to be filthy,
I think you can get around fifteen million year. Let
me look mm hmmm, Yeah, I don't know. I think
I think people are just throwing that out there.
Speaker 2 (01:03:35):
If you if you're Cooper Flag and you're the best
player in college or basketball and even close, there's nothing
else you could do it, Duke, besides just enjoy the.
Speaker 1 (01:03:42):
College life for one more year, four years.
Speaker 3 (01:03:47):
Fifty seven million for Zachary Larcha Chez.
Speaker 1 (01:03:50):
Yeah, he's going to the NBA.
Speaker 2 (01:03:52):
Let's play to tell the truth next eleven twenty nine
here on Sports Talk seven ninety seven one three two
one two five seven.
Speaker 1 (01:03:58):
Ninety I never know, but yet I do.
Speaker 2 (01:04:20):
Let you say, gentlemen, time for us to figure out
if Connor and Ross know when I'm telling the truth
and when I'm not. Gentlemen, I want to make sure
we're very clear on this. Three of the four things.
Speaker 1 (01:04:38):
I believe you guys are ready for that.
Speaker 3 (01:04:42):
Three of the four things.
Speaker 9 (01:04:44):
We're trying to find the lie, the one he doesn't believe,
the one lie Ross.
Speaker 1 (01:04:48):
How many lies? Do I have? One? Lie? Connor? How
many lies? Just one? Thank you?
Speaker 5 (01:04:53):
Here we go.
Speaker 2 (01:04:56):
I really do believe that Christian Walker will not be
ready for the start of the sea, thus adding the
fact that the Astros are gonna be really concerned about
right field.
Speaker 1 (01:05:11):
Camp Smith, somehow, some way is gonna make this an
opening day roster, and I.
Speaker 2 (01:05:14):
Did not think that was gonna be a situation, not
because of Chaz but Morgan's I think they're afraid about
Christian Walker not being ready to.
Speaker 1 (01:05:22):
Go for the twenty twenty five openers. Doesn't mean he's
gonna hear the whole year, doesn't mean he can't slump
and go back to the minor leagues.
Speaker 2 (01:05:29):
But I think his spring training plus Christian Walker's unavailability
makes him a prime guy to start the season with
the big league roster.
Speaker 1 (01:05:40):
Although I don't think the.
Speaker 3 (01:05:41):
Astros want to do this, So that's that's That's kind
of two takes in one. You've got Christian Walker out
to start the season and camp Smith making the opening
all part of one take. Right, Okay, it's confusing if
then now I don't think they want to do.
Speaker 1 (01:05:54):
This, but I think you just, okay, it would look
a little weird if they didn't bring him up, especially
if she wasn't ready. Take number two.
Speaker 2 (01:06:03):
I think Brendan Rodgers has been impressive. The glove has
been with this has been solid as you would expect it.
They're gonna give him a shot to play some second
base over this course of this year, and at least
early on I think Christian I think Brendan Rodgers makes
the opening day roster.
Speaker 1 (01:06:22):
That's taking number two.
Speaker 2 (01:06:24):
Okay, take number three, boys, a little weird one, but
just stay with me on this. The WNBA is threatening
a strike, right they are yes, breaking news, boys. The
WNBA players and the league will not force a strike.
(01:06:44):
The WNBA from a league and the WNBA players cannot
afford the negative backlash of having a strike. It will
be the it will be the crux of every sports
joke for however long ago, and for a league who's
fighting for credibility and for a league that's never made
a dime yet profitability. There is a little bit of
(01:07:08):
positive momentum with Caitlin Clark. There is some positive amnum
of Angel Reas and some other people involved. They're going
to figure out a way to get this done. Because
if you go on strike for a league that has
not turned to profit yet, you'll be made fun of
on Sports Center, You'll be made a fun of on
every radio show in the country, and you'll be made
fun of on the Tonight Show and the comedy centrals
(01:07:28):
and whatnot. The WNBA will avoid a strike because they
are definitely afraid of potential negative backlash from America if
a league that has not turned to profit goes on strike.
Speaker 1 (01:07:41):
And number four, the money.
Speaker 2 (01:07:44):
That is being spent on quarterbacks in the National Football
League is going to continue to crush salary caps year
after year after year. The NFL should go to implement
a cap on quarterback spending, and it'll probably be something
of a formula based off of total cap money spent, percentages, whatever.
(01:08:08):
But you just cannot continue to see these quarterbacks getting
fifty five sixty sixty five seventy million dollars a year.
You will crush caps. The NFL, it was smart, would
put a cap on quarterbacks. So Michael, let me give
my four takes again. Christian Walker will be ready. Thus
Cam Smith's making the opening day roster, Brendon Rodgers making
(01:08:30):
the opening day roster that's also taking number two taking
number three. The WNBA players and i a leegue will
vote to strike because they can't afford the negative backlash.
And number four, the money being spent on quarterbacks is
going to crush satury caps.
Speaker 1 (01:08:41):
The NFL needs to go to implement a cap on quarterbacks.
Which one of the four? Am I not telling the truth?
Speaker 9 (01:08:49):
Bross Connor, you want me to talk, I think we can.
I think he believes three by the would be a.
Speaker 3 (01:08:56):
Hard pressed to believe Matt's going to be stumping for
WNBA players.
Speaker 9 (01:08:59):
Yeah, so I'm with you on that. I honestly think
it might be between one and four. I think Brendan
Rodgers has like has enough. Man, It's a very vanilla take.
Speaker 3 (01:09:10):
I don't think Matt imagines that Brendan Rodgers has no
shot to play some second base because you know, Dubon
is a utility man, and.
Speaker 1 (01:09:17):
It's got between It's got to be between one and four.
For me, I'm with you.
Speaker 3 (01:09:22):
I don't agree with either of these, So I guess
it's a matter of which one is more believable that
Matt believes.
Speaker 9 (01:09:28):
That's the thing is, you might not agree and it
might be a terrible take, but Mack still believe.
Speaker 1 (01:09:32):
You have to get inside of the head of a
man with really bad takes. Exactly. It's tough. I know
you guys are rude to me, but you're doing it
in front of my in front of my ears.
Speaker 3 (01:09:39):
It's just the worst, all right, I'm I'm I'm going
with one.
Speaker 9 (01:09:42):
I think, okay, I don't think Matt really believes that
camp Smith can make the opening gay roster even if
Christian Walker's hurt and can't start. I think camp Smith
he hasn't even played triple A.
Speaker 3 (01:09:51):
Okay, Now, Matt on number four, I must ask, you're
saying the NFL will implement a cap on quarterback spinning
or you're saying they should.
Speaker 1 (01:09:58):
Should I'll go for all right, I got one. You're right.
Speaker 2 (01:10:06):
Brendan Rodgers has been very vanilla take. It's not like
Mauricio Dubon has done enough in terms of being a
powerful bad. I mean, what's the real difference between Brendan
Rodgers bad and Maurico Dubon's bat? Not much, But you
need extra infield help. And if again Christian Walker doesn't
make the roster coming out of spring training, it's gonna
potentially open up spot for him.
Speaker 1 (01:10:28):
The glove's been really good so far in spring training.
I think Brandan Rodgers can make the roster. The WNBA
cannot strike boys, they just can't. They will be made.
Speaker 2 (01:10:41):
Fun of to levels that even if it's a short
strike it it'll be a running joke, and why would
you want to interrupt any sort of You got charter flights.
Now you're getting more money. I'm sure they want some
more things. You're filling up arenas.
Speaker 1 (01:10:58):
Good good, good, good good. You don't want to.
Speaker 2 (01:11:00):
Start any possible shot of positive momentum by having a
player strike.
Speaker 1 (01:11:06):
They've got to figure it out. You cannot go on
strike number one and number four pretty darn close.
Speaker 2 (01:11:16):
While I think camp Smith should make the roster come
out of spring, I think they're a little worried about
the clock starting early, especially because of the fact that
he has had no major league experience. He has never
seen any more than double A pitching. I think camp
Smith is again May fifteenth, sooner rather than later. But
(01:11:38):
I do believe the NFL needs to put a cap
on quarterbacks.
Speaker 3 (01:11:43):
That's ridiculous, bangs salary, camp bags going up. I'm proud
of you.
Speaker 1 (01:11:48):
Connor.
Speaker 3 (01:11:49):
Yeah, I was down to one in four two.
Speaker 1 (01:11:53):
Now ROSSI Yeah, they're going to say a position in sports.
Speaker 2 (01:11:59):
I do believe are going to say you cannot spend
any more than certain percentage in your quarterbacks.
Speaker 1 (01:12:05):
That's ridiculous.
Speaker 10 (01:12:06):
And the reason why I mean it may be ridiculous,
but you are seeing, We're gonna see a seventy five
million dollar year quarterback eventually. If no, if this, if
this situation is knock get capped off, you're going to
absolutely destroy your roster with second with second tier players
and multiple positions if you continue to spend thirty percent
of your cap on one football player, and the numbers
(01:12:28):
keep looking bigger and bigger because the cap key is
going up and up.
Speaker 1 (01:12:32):
But I here's my thought, Rosson, I don't have proof
of this. I know you don't.
Speaker 2 (01:12:35):
I feel like the number, the quarterback number is going
higher at the rate than the cap.
Speaker 5 (01:12:41):
That's right.
Speaker 3 (01:12:41):
I don't believe that's true. The cap is two hundred
and eighty million dollars this year. Five years ago is
one ninety eight.
Speaker 1 (01:12:49):
Okay, so the cap is two to eighty.
Speaker 3 (01:12:51):
You said, yes, five years ago is one ninety eight.
Speaker 2 (01:12:54):
So if I spent seventy five million dollars on one player,
that's which nobody has.
Speaker 3 (01:12:59):
Well we're getting, are we not? No, it's at sixty
right now. And and Josh Allen just signed for fifty
five a year.
Speaker 1 (01:13:05):
Okay, so let's say it's sixty.
Speaker 2 (01:13:07):
You're still talking about what's twenty two eighty into sixty
thirty four to thirty five percent on one player.
Speaker 1 (01:13:13):
Mm hmm, it's only gonna get higher.
Speaker 2 (01:13:17):
You know what, criticized me. I'm I'm fully I fully
expect this from you.
Speaker 1 (01:13:22):
Good. They're going to put a cap on the money
that is being spent on a quarterback. You cannot.
Speaker 2 (01:13:29):
You're only going to all to spend a certain percentage
of your salary on the quarterback. Whether you choose to
do that is your own right.
Speaker 3 (01:13:34):
It could happen, but I would say it's a very very,
very long well shot.
Speaker 2 (01:13:40):
The reason why that would help your cause a little
bit is that maybe you could say that's your colluding
against a position, and that's not fair to do that.
Speaker 1 (01:13:48):
Why cap a position that is as important as you
said it was. I understand why you're saying what it is.
Speaker 2 (01:13:53):
I'm just saying, I think for the economics of the sport,
for the other players were thinking, man, I'm a number
one receiver, Well, we can't pay you like that because
we're paying thirty five percent.
Speaker 1 (01:14:04):
Of our salary to one player of our cap.
Speaker 2 (01:14:07):
