The word is done. Now kickback, pop a top and catch up
with your Houston team Rank Cap BrankCap. This is the Nightcap with Ross
Verial Bandcap BANKCAPCA TRU six so onepm here on Sports Talk seven niney.

(00:34):
Hello and welcome into another edition ofthe Nightcap program. Ross very out with
you for a full hour show alongsidemy producer David Artist. As we have
a number of different things to getto as we go along, phone lines
are going to be open and wideavailable for you at seven one three two

(00:57):
one two five seven nine seven onethree two one two five seven nine.
Tweets too at sports RV if youwould like to interact that way. So,
like I said, we got someTexans news going on here. Of
the news coming out today, TomPallisero via Jin Slater, I guess feels

(01:18):
like a lot of times these peopleare breaking news together and I don't know
what's going on with that, butanyways, Tom Pallisero saying earlier today it's
expected to be c Dre Stroud killme one for your Houston Texans. So
those of you who are all inon money mills, sorry, it's a
rough day. I don't mean tokick you while you're down. But it's

(01:41):
unfortunate because I remember the preseason hypelast year and people cutting up like five
highlights of good throws at Davis Millsmade, and then and then before preseason
week one last year, Davis Millsgets to play football today, like that
was something to be excited about.I mean, my god, what a
let down that turned out to be. Not that Davis Mills's career is over

(02:01):
after two years or anything like that, but it just feels like some of
y'all need to pump the brakes onthe hype and rockets Twitter. I'm looking
squarely at you as well on youngplayers or small sample sizes or things like
that, or basically any fan baseon Twitter. But anyways, so c
J strout k QB one for yourHouston Texans. The bad news coming out

(02:23):
also today that Titus Howard has abroken hand. He is well, first
reported by Ian Rappaport, I thinkhe said six to eight weeks, and
then our good friend Adam Schefter camein and stepped right on his foot and
was like, not so fas asmy friend up dated timetable, it is
going to be four to six weeksfor Titus Howard and his hand and expected

(02:46):
to possibly be available for the weekone opener for your Houston Texans as they
travel up to the Baltimore Ravens andlikely get beat by more than one score
at least that's what Vegas is sayingright now with a nine and a half
or nine point spread depending on whereyou go. Look. So those news

(03:07):
items coming out today, I mean, if you want to spend a lot
of time on CJ Strout, LikeI said, first of all, I
host this show solo with a littlebit of help of my producer and at
the time right now that is David. And if you want to get in
and talk about anything, I'm downto talk about it on the phone.
So if you want to get fullbreakdown of CJ Strout as QB one,
I've always been somebody who has thoughtphilosophically, you draft a young quarterback,

(03:30):
certainly somebody within like basically number one, number two, overall, top five
in that area, throw them untothe fire. They're gonna sink or swim
for the most part. I mean, there are some stories of guys turning
their careers around late in life,a Geno Smith here or there. If
you will, and I'm sure there'ssome other ones that are escaping my mind
right now. But for the mostpart, guys are either going to be

(03:53):
good enough or they're not. Whetheryou have a bad offensive line, which
the Texans don't, where you havea lack of weapons, which well,
I guess the Texans do as faras pass catchers unless you're really really high
on Dalton Schultz and Nico Collins andNoah Brown and Robert Woods and see what
we can get out of John Mechithis year, but still one of the

(04:15):
worst receiving cores or pass catching coresin the entire NFL. So I'm like,
just throw them out there and ifthey're good enough, we'll find out
soon enough. If they're not,we'll find out. I mean, because
the clock is taking the second thatyou put in a young quarterback in there,
so you might as well get takingquickly as possible, evaluate the situation,
and then I'll maybe like Josh Rosenwith the Arizona Cardinals, like,

(04:40):
you know what, this isn't gonnawork out, Let's go ahead and get
Kyler Murray. But of course theTexans don't have that luxury because they traded
for their first round pick and isnow in the hands of said Era Zona
Cardinals, so we have that thatwe can talk about. Of course,
the Astros over the weekend, well, I guess there's some astro's news today.
They visited the White House as theydid post two seventeen World Series championship.

(05:03):
They did so in two and eighteen, and Donald Trump was the president
at the time, and he spokeand talked about how good of a job
as skippering that aj Hinch did,and talked about Game seven of the World
Series being one of the best gamesof all time. And today, Joe
Biden we played some of it.I think I don't know if Joe spoke

(05:25):
anymore than we played at the topof the Matt Thomas Show earlier today,
and he didn't have anything too crazyto say, just fumbled the word here
or there and sounded really old.But that's what Joe Biden is anyways.
So that happened today and that's notnecessarily big news to me personally, But

(05:46):
I guess the astro's news over theweekend was that they split the series with
the New York Yankees, and JoseAltuve continues to do great things at Yankee
Stadium. I mean, I reallyjust love watching him the hearts of Yankees
fans, and unfortunately he had theopportunity to do that on what Thursday night,
the game one of the series.A couple of guys on at the
end of the game down one runand they weren't able to do it.

(06:10):
But a season, I'm sorry, series split over the weekend in New York
a wild one, really, Imean, especially yesterday. How often are
you gonna walk twelve batters in asingle freaking Major League baseball game and come
away with the win? That wasjust I mean, especially as second guesser's
delight. Yesterday as well, youhad Josei ra Keatie start the game.

(06:31):
Apparently. My understanding is the planpregame was to pitch jose raa Keati for
a few innings, then go tothe piggyback system with JP France and then
go for there. And I guessin an ideal world you'd only need a
couple of innings from your bullpen andgo out there and win the ball game
and not give up a ton ofruns. Well, yeah, shrows gave

(06:53):
up seven runs, five of thosecharged to jose er Keati, who I
really feel like there was times wherewe saw some flashes of him pitching pretty
well. He had a sinker hewas working in there. Change up I
thought looked good at some points, but overall, I mean, bottom line
was it wasn't a great start. And then Phil freaking Meton came in and,

(07:13):
man, Phil Maton, you're outof the circle of trust. I'm
so sorry. I really liked whathe brought. I like his demeanor out
there, the fact that he lookslike a robot and he stares straight ahead
at everybody and stuff like that. But when you come in, you hit
somebody. You get a strike outon Higashioka, that was nice. And
then the next two guys walk.Oh man, you had to go to

(07:34):
JP France and an unclean inning atthat point, which I'm sure Dusty Baker
wasn't planning on doing, but hadno choice at that point because Maton couldn't
clean up. Or Keatie's mess mademore of him as actually made things worse.
And then all praised to be toJP France. Seventy pitches for him,
thirty eight of them strikes, pickedup the win as well. Hector

(07:56):
Nearris did his thing, and thenBriana Braye was a little shaky. Certain
people on this show saying a Bray, you can't be trusted, even though
he didn't give up a run andhe was able to get to save his
fourth of the season, and itjust I mean a freaking while when Jake
Myers with two three run home runs. By the way, good weekend for
the Jake Myers fan Club. Hehad a run saving catch over the weekend

(08:18):
and hit a couple of home runsas well. I want to check his
ops I think is up to likeseven twenty ish, So yeah, seven
seventeen the on base plus slugging ofJake Myers. Who I mean when I
talked about being in the Jake Myersfan Club, It's not like I think
the guys at All Star or anything. I think he plays really good center
field and I'm hoping that he canops somewhere between like seven fifty and eight

(08:41):
hundred consistently. So if you havesomebody who's elite center field, which I
think Jake is. Doesn't have anelite arm, but elite a covering ground
out there, getting jumps on ballsand stuff like that, and then can
ops around seven fifty eight hundred, then you've got a really good ball player,
and we haven't seen it consistently withhim in the bat, and he
hasn't been hitting right handed pitching welleither, But still nice to see a

(09:03):
couple of three run shots for JakeMyers over the weekend, and I mean
just awesome, really out of nowhere. Not something you're expecting the guy to
drive in six runs, but theAstros needed just about every single one of
them as they beat the Yankees nineto seven yesterday and now the day off
today, and some people calling ita must win series against the Baltimore Orioles

(09:30):
because the Rangers right now they're oneasy Street. They're playing the Oakland A's,
even though the Oakland A's did geta couple of wins over the weekend
against their San Francisco Giants, theirBay Area rivals, and the ass Shows
are having to take on the BaltimoreOrioles, who are one of the best
teams in the American League and rightnow leading the Tampa Bay Rays by a
not comfortable margin, but three gamesin the American League East, and the

(09:54):
Angels. All of the Angels,I think they have not been playing well.
Yeah, they're kind of falling bythe wayside. Yeah, good job
pushing all your chips in at thetrade deadline, Angels and trying to prove
that choheo Tani that you guys aregonna win. Since then, I think
they haven't won of games since abreak, right, So still some ground

(10:15):
to be gained by the Astros becausethe Marlins got swept by the Rangers.
So now two and a half backyour Astros against the Texas Rangers and then
I mean Mariners, Rangels are somewhatin the mix. Right now. It's
Rangers v Astros for the AOST crown, and the Astros lost some ground over
the weekend and you got the freakingRangers playing up against the terrible Oakland A's.

(10:37):
So Astros need to start winning somegames this week starting tomorrow, six
up five, first pitch right hereon Sports Talk seven ninety against the Baltimore
Orioles, and we'll see what theAstros get planned out as far as the
week goes along. When we're talkingabout their starting rotation, supposed to be
Framber on Tuesday, Javier on Wednesday, and then Hunter Brown on Thursday,

(11:01):
and then I guess we will gofrom there, all right, seven one
three, two, one two fiveseven ninety is the phone number if you
want to get in. We mentionedthe Texans stuff. We've got the Astro
stuff going on as well as theywere at the White House today and then
Baltimore this week in a very importantif you don't want to lose ground series
against the Orioles seven one three twoone two five, seven ninety If you

(11:24):
want again, a lot of stuffto get to and discuss with you until
seven o'clock here on the Nightcap programon Sports Talk seven ninety the Astros World
Series champions a real winners play andreal Texans talk on Sports Talk seven ninety

(11:46):
six seventeen and the PM here onSports Talks seven ninety Welcome back to the
Nightcap Ross vireale with you till seveno'clock. Phone lines open and available for
you at seven one three two onetwo five seven ninety seven one three two
one two five seven ninety. Tweetstwo at sports are vu So yeah,

(12:07):
talking about the Astros over the weekend, couple of wins over the Yankees,
couple of losses to the Yankees.Unfortunately, I mean the Rangers are not
going away. We are how longaway from those memes that a lot of
Astros fans are putting on Twitter like, oh, excuse me if you think
I'm gonna sleep on the Rangers, and then it was pictures of them sleeping

(12:28):
and falling asleep and all that typeof stuff. Well, they've won six
games in a row. They continueto hold a lead over the Astros.
It was nice to have them sweptwith that last weekend or whatever it was
against the Padres and a very streakyteam that they've been weird. It seems
like they went rip off a bunchof wins in a row and then lose
some. But right now they're playingwell and it just it's no, there's

(12:52):
no reason to predict that they're gonnago away. Although you did have Josh
Young, right, not Jace,I know they're others. One of the
youngs. Josh Young. Yeah,Josh Young fractured his thumb for the Rangers
and he's gonna be missing some time. He's been playing, praying pretty well
for them all season Long's got overtwenty home runs. A lot of injuries

(13:13):
though. It's yeah, they haveJonah him, it's who else is missing,
I don't know. But they justcontinue to win games and they're gonna
be Yeah. All of course toGraham as well. So, yeah,
they've had a lot of injuries. They continue to play well, and Astros
are gonna have to earn it ifthey want to win the American League West
this year. A lot of timesin years past, the teams just haven't
been good enough. The other alot of times they've been terrible. So

(13:37):
you're in a dog fight for thedivision. It happens. It's most divisions
in baseball right now. You gota team within three four games. It's
fun. You have August and Septemberbaseball, which the Astro seven had.
Yeah, well that's unfortunate. Yeah, because you've been resting everybody and kind
of being playing. It's almost likethe September has been their preseason the last
few years. But yeah, outsideof the Braves, though, everybody.

(13:58):
The Braves are running away with theNL East. I guess the you know
what, the Guardians are falling backnow, Guardians, you suck four and
a half back Giants four and ahalf back of the Dodgers. But most
people in division races right now inbaseball, I'm sorry, most divisions are
in a race, just not theNational League East. Carl Holding longest year

(14:20):
on Sports Talk seven ninety Carl, what's up, hey, I always enjoy
this show. He already beat meto the punch about the Josh Jung injury,
so that that'll set them back alittle bit. Kudos to Bregman and
his matching tie and tennis shoes forthe white House thing today. Third thing,

(14:41):
Johnathan Singleton aka puff Daddy. Iwish him the best. I command
him for staying with us this long, and I predict that he's gonna go
deep at least once in this seriesif he plays against the Orioles, so
you know, hopefully we'll catch lightningin a bottle or whatever. But the

(15:03):
last thing is i'd like other thanthe guy batting ninth last night, even
though he hit a home run andall that. I like the lineup they
had on on Sunday. That's okay. That's really about all I had to
say. And kudos to Kate Meyersfor silencing all the haters. And uh,

(15:24):
you know, I think they're gonnastill come back and win this and
Spider Baker and all that, butwe'll see how it plays out, all
right, Carl, thank you,I appreciate it. Yeah, I mean,
just Dusty Baker just tying them downis holding the whole team back.
Hopefully they can just continue to winus. He just of course every win
is on the players, and ofcourse every loss is on Dusty Baker as

(15:46):
we go along here. That's justthat's just how it is. That's all
right, Dusty knows the drill, all right. Seven one three two one
two five seven ninety is the phonenumber. Will. I'm Katie next up?
What's up? Will? What's goingon? Uh? Like, I
always thanks thanks for having me,you know, a great show. Um,
thank you man. I UM.One thing I do have to say,

(16:10):
like, speaking of Joe Biden,I feel like if Joe Biden was
an umpire, he would be AngelHernandez. Um. I gotta feel like
Angel Hernandez would do a better jobthan Joe Biden. But that's just me.
Well, even though as much aswe don't like Angel Hernandez, he
still gets like over the calls, right, I don't know, I mean,

(16:33):
I'm just saying like, but it'sto me. I've watched some I've
literally watched some games where I don'teven care what teams are playing. I
just flip them through and I seeAngel Hernandez is behind the plate and it's
just it's just entertaining to me.Um. And so that leads me to
a question of do you think ifI'm sure it's a stat somewhere because it's
baseball, But um, has anybodyever looked at like the average run scored

(16:59):
per umpire? Because I feel likeplayers um are a little more swing happy
going up there because they know theyhave a larger strike zone. UM with
Angel Hernandez, but um, Imean, besides that, one thing,
I just I think we played fine, you know, like we are walks
were you know, a little obviouslyout of control. But um, one

(17:22):
thing I did love is of courseAltuve. Um. They they hate him
up there and he gets to goyard and then uh I either Blummer or
TK mentioned something about how well Jordandoes and Yankee Stadium that like if he
was on pace to play an entireseason there, he would hit be on
pace, he hit like eighty eighthome runs or something like that. But
besides that, man, I just, uh, I think it's funny watching

(17:44):
Angel Hernandez. I think he's Idon't know, it's just sometimes it's just
cop. I think he's infuriating.I mean, he he almost they could
have walked it off last night orI guess it was yesterday afternoon. It
was what was the last play withBrian A Bray you he should have gotten
strikes three, right, and thenthey ended up walking. It was was
it glabored tourist or was it nearest? Yeah? And then I mean and

(18:07):
then also was it it was youron where the foul tip that? I
mean, it was the most obviousthat fell on the ground and then he
picked it up and and no,no, it was in Chi Carloston.
I'm pulling it up now. Runnerson first and second. It should have
been strike three the third pitch ofthat at bat, and it was called
a ball and the game should haveended, like if he swings and gets
a home run and they win thatgame when he should have been called out.

(18:30):
I was gonna flip my uh mycoffee table over. Yeah, I
mean, I'm I know, Itry, I'm I agree with um.
It just gets to the point whereit's just and the fact that he tries
to um what what he uh hestarts up the show I would protests,

(18:51):
I guess the MLB because he thinksthat's they're that they're racist, that he
can so that's I mean, youjust come on. I mean, that's
that's what make Yeah, you lookat your number as Angel, it's frustrating,
but anybody else, Yeah, exactly, all right, thanks appreciate you
will, thank you for getting in. And yeah, I mean I kind
of jokingly put a poll up yesterdayon my Twitter. I was like,

(19:15):
who would you rather be calling ballsand strikes? Angel Hernandez or a perfect
automated system. I did vote onthat. By the way, did you
vote for Angel Hernandez? No?Okay, good, because ten percent you
people are trolling. There's ten percentof you that are voting for Angel Hernandez.
It's like, can we get everysingle call right? Or do we
want Angel Hernandez and like Cebe buckNor and whoever else these other terrible umpires

(19:37):
out there who we're gonna miss callsand like I said, decides games or
have the potential to decide games. We're gonna get the robops coming anyway.
See Hey, well I think they'regonna go with a challenge system. That's
what I think is gonna be theand I use those air quotes happy medium,
yes, where they do it intriple A right now where I think
it's Tuesday through Thursday it's the fullsystem, and then Friday, Saturday,

(20:00):
Sunday it is the challenge system. So I think that's what they're doing.
I think each gets each batter getslike two challenges a game. It doesn't
take a lot. Actually, somebodytweeted me that they felt like it was
holding up games. I gotta behonest, I haven't watched a whole lot
of Triple A baseball. I reallywant to get to out to a Skeeters
game. But once we get thecan we get the heat indecks below one

(20:22):
hundred and fifteen, like for oneday. I mean, seriously, I
would love to go out there becauseI do want to see the challenge.
I want to go to a gamethat's regular, and I want to go
to a game that's challenge system andsee how much it holds up. Because
apparently, within like half a second, the umpires are getting the call.
So maybe it's a little bit delayedand unnatural, but you have umpires sometimes

(20:42):
holding up like one or two secondsfor a dramatic call. You get very
late striking ball calls, So Idon't know how much time is that's adding
because you think about, okay, two hundred pitches well, actually the Astros
themselves had like two hundred pitches inthe last game, but normally two hundred
pitches. Okay, you're you're addinga half second. That's one hundred extra
seconds, and then we're talking aboutalmost two minutes, so that's not that

(21:03):
much you're adding to the game.I think you take some out where like
you know, Alex Bregman or whoeveris staring at the umpire and you get
jawing from the from the dugouts andstuff like that, So how much does
that balance out? But yeah,I'm in favor and I have been for
years and years and years for thefull automatic ball strike system, as long
as they can get it correct anduse the technology, which apparently they have

(21:27):
done. They've got the Hawkeye technology. They've got twelve cameras in these ballparks
and they can get every single angleand they calibrated for every batter. Aaron
Judge and jose L two Va aren'tgoing to have the same same strike zone.
So you're fine there, and theyshould just do it. They should.

(21:47):
You go to the full thing, you can get the call. I
think it's up to I think there'sa website on Twitter. It's called a
codified baseball or something like that.I think at the All Star break they
had said something like thirteen thousand callshad been missed, thirteen thousand, and
actually, umpires are getting better, and there was an article buy it was
Baseball America or somebody like, wemay never find out how good umpires can
get. And that's okay, becausewe can find out that we can get

(22:11):
one hundred percent of the calls right. And the umpires are getting a lot
better since they've had these the trackingdata. Every year they've gotten better and
better and better, but they haven'tgotten one hundred percent. And so I
think it was in like two eighteenthere was like thirty four thousand balls and
strikes missed. So this year it'sprobably gonna be I don't know, twenty
twenty five thousand. That's still wouldyou rather get zero calls wrong or twenty

(22:34):
five thousand calls wrong? I guessI'm crazy because I go for the zero.
All right, we're gonna take abreak here if you guys want to
get in. I didn't necessarily meanto talk about that, but talking about
the Astros, I didn't even mentionthe Angel Hernandez angle. But yeah,
Angel freaking Hernandez potentially could have castthe Astros to the game. Now,
of course, at the end ofthe day, I would say, Brian
and Bray, you execute your pitch, don't give up a home run to

(22:57):
John Carlos Stanton. But if hepokes one three and eighteen feet into right
field and the Astros lose when thegame should have been over, that would
have pissed me off. And ifit would have happened at the end of
the game as well in the eighth, as David mentioned, when Hector Narris
was pitching, he missed a bigcall there, and it's like, dude,

(23:18):
come on, man, you gottaget these calls right, especially in
these clutch situations, and then wewon't even have to talk about it won't
even be a talking point. ButRob Manford his old school. Baseball in
general is old school. So theystill want the quote human element, which
just translates to getting the calls wrong. They want the human element, which
means in perfection and whatever. Hopefullyeventually it goes to the right thing.

(23:42):
I don't understand why they wouldn't.It just continues to baffle me year after
year. All Right, we're gonnatake that break here on the Nightcap program.

(24:52):
named the number one starting quarterback. We're really not by Damiko Ryan's I mean,
it's it's I kind of find itfascinating in general, this whole life
of reporters and leaking things out,and when things do and don't leak,
and you know when one guy isscratching the others back, and how all

(25:15):
of this kind of comes together.Because if you are the Houston Texans,
and I imagine Damiko Rants at theend of the day, or Bobby Sloak,
the offensive coordinator, whoever you wantto call it, they're the person
making the final call for who's goingto be starting. Or maybe this is
set in play in stone weeks agowhen c J. Shroud was even drafted.

(25:37):
Instead, all right, guys,we're gonna make him earn it in
air quotes for a couple of weeks, or he's gonna split the reps,
and as long as he doesn't looklike a complete unmitigated disaster out there,
we're gonna put him in as numberone. And we're gonna do it in
week one of the preseason, acouple of days before the game, and
we're leaking it out to Jin Slatervia Tom Pallisero, Like what, I

(26:04):
don't I don't know. I mean, I guess in general, things leak
out, because sometimes things you don'twant to get out leak out. But
still or did I guess was wasCJ was told on? Was Demiko Ryan
on NFL Network and then said this, Maybe that's the way that it came
out, But my understanding was thatit was Tom Pallisero vagins later, So

(26:26):
that actually makes a lot more senseif he was actually on NFL Network and
said it, because NFL Network isat Texans camp this week. But just
in general, it's like Demiko Ryansjust go in front of the media and
say, hey, it's gonna beh. It's gonna be c J.
Stroud week one. He's our guy, he earned the spot, blah blah
blah blah blah. But I guessthat'll be coming in a few days and
then we'll see what happens in weekone. And question posed earlier today by

(26:49):
a good friend and colleague, MattThomas, But excitement level right now for
the Texans and where you are atthem is are is week one? Now?
Of course, you're not going tosee a whole lot of stuff.
It's gonna be mostly vanilla. CJ. Stroule is gonna hand off,
He's gonna make a couple of quick, three step drop throws. He's probably
gonna make a few checkdowns, makea couple of swing passes, screens,

(27:11):
get him some easy looks, easythrows. Let him get a little bit
more used to the speed of thegame, because it's such a step up
from the college game, such astep up from what he's probably been doing
in practices, especially especially in thisday and age where players are not going
full boring practices and there are fewerpadded practices and nobody wants to get hurt.

(27:33):
I want to make sure that it'slive action if you're gonna give it
you all because weeks players are makingmillions of millions of dollars and you don't
want to risk injury. So,David, are you much of a Texans
fan in general? Are you?Uh? Sure? Okay, you've been
following the team, like you say, sure, you're not? Like,
oh yeah, I can't get enoughof Texans football, and I paint my
face deep steel blue every weekend.Well you know what fan? I am?

(27:56):
Right? No, I don't whatteam? No, I don't.
You don't remember, No, Idon't recall Green Bay. Oh you're Oh
that's right now, I remember not? You say it? Okay, So
you're not really much of a Texansfan. The Green the Green Bay Packers
are your squad, they would be, yes, but I do like the
Texans. Okay, it's time tohop off that bandwagon. You can hop
off the Green Bay Packers bandmas Imean is get off? Oh? Why

(28:18):
you? I'm sorry? I didn'tknow, are you from Waukesha or something
like that? No? Where areyou from? Houston, Texas? Okay?
Well, then at some point youhopped on a bandwagon? Correct,
you'd have no unless you're did youyour parents? Are they from Madison?
No, it's not like I jumpedon when they won the Super Bowl.
It was years before that. Okay, but at some point you jumped on,

(28:40):
I guess, But like, wouldn'tbandwagon imply that they were good?
So that's why you liked them? What year did you become a Packers?
Few? Thousand and nine? Didn'tthey won the Super Bowl? Like around
then? Twenty eleven? Then?Okay, so two years later. But
Aaron Rodgers was really great? Okay, Uh, you'd been like Brett Farves
last year I didn't like. Okay, so but Aaron Rodgers didn't play as

(29:03):
a rookie though, you mean likehis first year starting right, which was
twenty and eight. Okay, soafter that you're like Aaron Rodgers for life.
Let's go Green Bay Packers for thelast years. So at that point
okay, Well, so I meanyou didn't hop on a team that was
like two and fourteen. I guessI can go look up the Green Bay
Packers season. I can tell youthat the first year okay started, there
were six and ten. Okay, what about the year before that? That

(29:26):
was Brett Farest final years? SoI think where they loose late the Giants
in the NSC Championship. I don'tknow that sounds right, that's sure?
Why not? And they ran himout the door or Brett farf and then
the Jets thing happened, and thenthings got a little crazy. Okay,
two thousand and nine they went elevenand five and was to the Cardinals in
the wildcard game. Yes they did. Do you remember the score? Um?

(29:48):
I haven't right, I got fiftyone forty five, that's correct in
overtime. Anyways. Uh yeah,So okay, you're not a Texans fan,
so I guess I can't post thisquestion you if I could pick a
second team, I mean they're okay, they are second teams? Are you?
Look? Now? This time tohop off? What's going with the
Packers? What's there? What's eventheir win total? Yikes? Anyways,

(30:10):
Okay, so people who are Texansfan, I guess I'm curious because if
you are like died in the wall, I guess it doesn't even matter,
you're getting all up for amped up. Like I said, people are amped
up for Davis Mills season. Lastyear, Davis Mills plays football today,
Yeah, what a great time tobe alive. Oh I can't wait for
Money Mills to start throwing touchdowns andslanging them all over the place. And
wow, that never materialized. Soyeah, if you're like getting all excited

(30:33):
for that, I guess you're probablyexcited for this year. But to people
who are casual, to people whoare not the biggest Texans fans or or
a kind of into the team, but last couple of years you've been soured,
I'm curious because me, I'm gonnabe honest, I've never been a
Texans fan. I've talked about this. I'm old, so that means I
love the Oilers when I was young, and then when they left there was

(30:56):
no team here for a while, and then when the Texans came, I
was in Austin more concerned about TexasLonghorn football and five dollar pitchers at the
Crown and Anchor Pup, So Ididn't really get into Texans ball. They
didn't have it on every week thereeither. There's a lot of Cowboys country
and although I gravitated a little bitto the Cowboys as a teenager because there

(31:17):
was no team here. I waslike, nah, forget that, not
gonna be a Cowboys fan. Andthat wasn't bandwaggings hopping because I was like
Quincy Carter times. I'm sorry,Quincy, Yeah, I was a Quincy
Carter. What was the name ofthat terrible quarterback that they had? I
think it was, yeah, QuincyCarter. So yeah, so that was
that age. So I certainly wasn'tnot bandwagging hopping at that point. But

(31:38):
anyways, so I mean, Iguess I'm like, should I just go
ahead and hop in and then getin here? It's a new era,
the team's not good, they're notexpected to be good. Let's do it.
I am from Houston, so yeah, you're right. Should I just
hop on? And should I buya helmet with some Toro horns on it
and start getting ramped up for Texansgames every single weekend? Because I'm pretty

(32:00):
amped up to see what c.J. Stroud can do. I like
the fact that the Texans and NickCassario have gotten players on this roster that
I've actually heard of. I've heardof Jimmy Ward, I've heard of Sheldon
Rankins and Shack Mason and some ofthe other guys on I've heard of Robert
Woods. Robert Woods very good anymore, I don't know, but I've heard
of Noah Brown and Dalton Schultz andCJ. Stroud and Will Anderson I think

(32:22):
are really intriguing. His picks atthe top of the draft as well.
Like I would say, my interestlevel is higher than it's been in years
and years and years, maybe sincethe rookie season of DeShawn Watson. As
you recall, speaking of the quarterbackbattles in camp, he was the number
two to Tom Savage, which lastedlike half a football half of a football

(32:43):
Game's right, Yeah, Bill O'Brian'slike, yeah, Tom Savage is our
guy. He's shown us a lot. He's veteran in this league. He
can play in this the National FootballLeague. Literally one half in crap,
Tom Savage sucks Deshaun Watson time. And that was about the time. I'm
like, I don't know how smartthis Bill O'Brien guy is, because you

(33:05):
always assume he was smart because hewent to Brown University. I need to
check the files and see what kindof donations were made by the O'Brien family.
They he did something before that withBrian Horyor as well. He didn't
like the half it was, itwas all the whole rotation. Well they
called it the hoilet, the hoiler, Hoyer and Mallet. It was called
the hoilet. It was not good. And then Fitzpatrick mixed in there it's

(33:27):
terrible, like all right, theyfinally got somebody. Maybe he knows what
he's doing. And then Tom Savagelasted a freaking half of football. And
then Bill O'Brien went back on hisword. And that's when I was like,
Okay, this guy is maybe notas smart as we thought he was,
because you get all that Ivy Leaguereputation and I mean, you get
that degree on your wall. Peoplejust assumed for years and years and years
that you're a genius and maybe you'renot. In a way you have to

(33:47):
respect that though, like this isnot working, then don't waste your time.
Just that's true. So also don'ttell us that you have all these
strong convictions about how great Tom Savagesand bail All. I'm one half in
one half of football. Anybody canhave a bad half of football. That's
a panic move. That's the headcoach. I would be yeah you would.
Yeah, I could see that.Yeah, I've seen your tweets.
Yeah you'd be panicking, No problem, I could see that, all right.

(34:09):
Seven one three two one two five, seven ninety the phone number seven
one three two on two five atseven ninety. Nightcap till seven o'clock.
We're gonna go and take a breakhere, come back in a minute.
The Astros World Series Champions, Hello, the Real Winners play and Real Texans
Talk on Sports Talk seven ninety.Final segment of the Nightcap programming on Sports

(34:49):
Talk seven ninety, Ross VI reout with you Longside Green Bay Packer fan
David Artists. I'm thinking I'm thinkingabout making it. I'm thinking about making
the leap just go ahead and goingall in and being a Texans fan and
just taking the lumps, because look, I'm gonna be honest, Thank God
for the Astros the last i don'tknow, six seven years whatever it's been

(35:13):
where they've been awesome and making WorldSeries and being champions and all that type
of stuff. Because the Rockets havebeen rough, the Texans have been rough.
Give you something to look forward toas well, right, and what
way? Well, Fred van Fleet. Well, yeah, I guess they
spent all their money in their wholecap and they're gonna win like thirty games.
Sweet cool. If they don't makea play in they're not gonna make

(35:36):
the plan. Don't think so,No, I don't. I mean,
I guess we can see. I'lltell you this if if if here we
go on talking rockets somehow, ifJalen Green and Jabari Smith Junior can make
some sort of leap and the teamjust shoots better collectively. They didn't had
shooting. They were the worst threepoint shooting team in the NBA last year.
And unfortunately, I'm in Thompson fellin your lap. He was the

(35:59):
best player of ailable totally get it. I am. I'm on board with
the draft pick. I think, first of all, he is an awesome
human being and he looks like amega talent. Just can't shoot, so
he's gonna have to break down andreconstruct his entire shot whatever how long that
takes, who knows, and thenhe can contribute in a couple of years.
But I don't think he's gonna contributemuch this year. So now I

(36:20):
don't think they're gonna make a plan. And I think the didn't the win
totals come out, they're like attwenty five and a half or something like
that. Now, every year there'steams that a wail overshoot their win totals.
They're teams that underperform to their wintotals. So of course that doesn't
mean it's an end all be allor anything like that. It gives you
a gauge of maybe where they're gonnaend up. I'll go look it up,
I meanties or something like that.Yeah, I will, I will

(36:46):
go find it because I know ourgood friend Matt Thomas ran through him when
we when they came out. Yeah, actually, you know at thirty one
and a half, is that reallythat high? I thought it was lower
than that, but we want twentytwo games last year? You're right,
you're right, so they were mine. Thirty one and a half is the
number that I'm seeing right now,or maybe that's going up. But I
thought it was around like twenty twentynine and a half or maybe what did

(37:07):
I say, twenty five and ahalf. That was way off. So
it's still higher than I expected itto be. But still thirty one games,
it's probably not gonna get you.Well, hey, you can head
over to lick Charles baby, getsome money down on that lickety split.
Um. So, yeah, that'swhere they are right now. But so
I guess the Rockets aren't great, and I feel like if I were to

(37:27):
hop on the Texans bandwagon. Firstof all, I wasn't gonna do when
Jack Eastery was there. It's terrible. Bill O'Brien, I didn't like them.
I liked Himiko Ryan's I liked it. Hannah mcnarre's running more of the
franchise. You know, of coursewe don't, but you never know what
any head coaches when you get afirst time head coach, and most of
the time it doesn't work out,but it still could. He's young,
he's gonna have the respect of theplayers. He's a good defensive play caller.

(37:50):
He's gonna call the players as well. I'm all on board with it.
Swing Sometimes you swing and you missed. Sometimes you get all them run.
So we'll see. Could be timefor me hop on that bandwagon.
Baby, what's up? Michelle?Well, I just want to tell you,
guys, I think you should hopon. But here's the thing.
I was a loyal Texas fan andwe're a divided house. My husband loves
those cowboys, but oh, I'msorry, he sounds obnoxious, Michelle.

(38:15):
You know I would say, yes, he wears all the jersey. Do
you know? I can't can't standit, but I love the Texans.
But I soured, like you said, the last couple of years. So
what I do. I watched myAsstros to the very last World Series game,
and then I switched over to myTexans and see if they're doing anything.
If they're not, I'm a littlebit of a bandwagon now I kind

(38:37):
of lost my cluster for that.I'm hoping they're kind of back this year.
I'm really, I really hope.So all right, thanks a lot,
Michelle. I appreciate you calling it, and thanks for you getting I
think there's a lot of people inthat boat, a kind of in wait
and see mode because a lot ofthe fan base, I mean, you
saw that stadium. This is asomebody that this team. Just a few
short years ago, they had anextremely lengthy list of people waiting to get

(39:00):
the opportunity to buy season tickets.I don't know where that list is now.
Let me here, let me putin Houston Texans season tickets. I
wonder if I can just go andsnatched them up because it used to be
a lengthy wait list for the teamand then you got to buy the PSLs
and that's a whole other thing. But still, oh no, now this

(39:21):
is gonna show probably my algorithm.I'm gonna get like Texans ads for the
next six months on Facebook and Twitterand what are I'm sorry x or whatever.
Great this always happens to me,Like I all search for like random
stuff because of I'm doing a believeit or not or something, and then
Twitter thinks like I'll search on stufflike the Cincinnati Reds, and then all
of a sudden people think I'm aCincinnati Reds fan and I get like Red

(39:43):
season ticket packages ads and stuff likethat because I went to a few Cardinals
with the Ashleys were in Saint LouisArlater and I bought you know, tickets
off like the Cardinals website. YesI still get Rockies. Yeah, I
went to I went to coors Fieldlike in twenty one two years ago.
They're like, oh, big weekendseries coming up from the Rockies against the

(40:04):
Brewers. Yeah, I'm not buyingtickets, no, but anyways, easily
unsubscribe to that step. I know, I think so, but it's usually
my spam email that I've been using. I don't only check it like once
every couple of weeks, and Igot like fifty thousand unchecked emails and apparently
accounts that I don't even own banklike I don't even have a Chase Bank
account, but my Chase Bank accountis is under review and I need to

(40:27):
give him my password in order tofix them. And then I also need
to give Wells Fargo, Bank ofAmerica, Capital One, everywhere, every
single bank in existence. Apparently myaccount is compromised and there's a Nigerian prince
who needs my password. So that'swhat happens though, That's what goes down
over there in that email account. But anyways, yeah, I think there's
a lot of people who are feelinglike, you know what, Yeah,
the Texans have lost me the lastcouple of years. So when you're waiting

(40:51):
Seamote, and yeah, if C. J. Stroud is a complete disaster
and you're gonna continue to be inwaiting Seamote, I don't think he's going
to be a disaster. I hopehe's not. And a whole lot of
history of number two quarterbacks being supersuccessful, but we're we're in wait and
see mode, and so I feellike if there's a time for me to
hop onto the badwagon, that's whenyou finally removed the you know, like

(41:15):
when you go to the movies orwhatever and you get a piece of popcorn
Colonel stuck in your teeth. Itwas like that. That's what Jack Eastery
was stuck in there firmly. He'sfinally been removed. And I mean,
I like Damiko Ryan's I like thehire. I like to stay even went
for it. Nikis Ceio man,I can take her leave. Looks kind

(41:35):
of weird, talks like a robotand wear sweat or vests whatever. But
I like CJ Strout. So maybeit's time for me to hop on that
wagon. Baby finally at some point. All right, on that note,
that is going to do it forthe Nightcap program here on Sports Talk seven
ninety My name is Ross vril Oh. By the way, quick news,
Josh Young expected to miss six weeksbecause he had to have surgery on the

(42:00):
thumb to stabilize the fracture. Sixweeks for Josh Young and the Texas Rangers.
That is a shame. You don'troot for injuries for anybody else but
them's the breaks. Ashow has beendealing with injuries all season long, as
all right, Dad, Like Isaid, that's it for the nightcap.
Thanks for listening, Thanks those whogot involved directly. Thanks David Artist producing,
doing a great job as always.I will talk to you folks tomorrow

(42:22):
at noon and as part of theand that's not true. I'm out for
the next couple days. I'll talkto you folks Friday here on Sports Talk
