Speaker 1 (00:00):
Run along here from the SEC media days and great
to talk with current players, former players, and a guy
who's a Longhorn great, a two time first seam All Pro,
four time pro bowler, BCS national champion, most importantly helped
me win Soveral with my fantasy footballs. The Great Jamal
Charles joins on behalf of Bush's Bag Beans and the
Hot Honey Grilling Beans.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Sama, welcome in man, thank you for having me, and
I'm excited to be partner with Bush's the Grilling Beans
this year. Also bringing in tailgate the tailgate this year
with the I got some bowl boosts home. That's what.
I ain't take the boots off yet, but I'm take
him off a few minutes to show them.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Yeah, that's those are pretty those are pretty fire.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yeah, I'm gonna take the pic. I'm gonna take them out.
But I'm styling on game day. I got to make
a bowl bowl on that game day. I gotta be right,
so I'm making my I don't like to really eat
a lot of meat on game these, so I do
a lot of plant base so I get my I
still get my pro team with my my Bush's Grilling Beans.
So I'm excited to just you know, be a partner
(01:01):
with Bush's really mean this year.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
That was funny. I talked to Todd Girley about this
last year. I said, what do you know about tailgating?
And he was he started, he was like, you know,
I haven't done a ton. Yeah, because as a player,
you can't tail gate. You're the game and all that.
So at post playing career stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Oh yeah, last year, like last year, the year before,
I was I was because I played in Kansas City
and they was a big, big tail guy in Kansas City.
But I'm like, man, I ain't. My brother used to
give me trying to get out to go out the man,
I ain't going out there and I get blasted by
on people out there if I go out there. But
I was able to experience it last year. It was crazy,
man like two years ago. But last year I went
(01:41):
outter that they was. I had like a line just
following me here where I went. So I tried to
eat my eat. I had to eating contest with a
last year eating brisket, brisky sandwich. But it was pretty fun,
just able to experience tailgame with the music and drinks.
I was getting into it. Let's go where are you.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
More beloved in Austin, Texas or Kansas City Kennon City?
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Really yeah, I think I'm beloved in Kansas City. I
mean I spend like a decade there of my career
there and it was, you know.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
I'm and it was like they went from one great
priest homes to you It's like it's not even fair.
Now they got to go to quarterbacks.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Oh yeah, Now like the it's definitely a pat and
Travis Kelsey's. They are basically made made king City into
like a state that you really want to go to.
You know what I'm saying. It's called show me state,
but they made it to a state that you want
to go watch the game before. You know what I'm saying. Like,
Kenna City got one of the historic stadiums in the
(02:38):
NFL history, so a lot of people got experience that
before they die. So just experienced going to h air
ahead of the lawless of the stadium in the world.
You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
But why couldn't we be doing this winning when I
was here? Man, when win the rings left and right?
Speaker 2 (02:54):
We was winning, but we wasn't there yet. You know
what I'm saying we led the family. Are gonna be
happy that I led the founder there? Yeah, and you
know what I'm saying, and taught a lot of kids
under me, under my wings, a lot of players like
how to be a profession of how to how to
be a player, how to how to approach the game.
And they saw me, and you know, I was just
happy that, you know what I'm saying, that they learned
from me. And I get that from Travis because when
(03:16):
I first came in, Travis to follow me everywhere. Yeah,
when he got drafted, and you know, the kid was
amazing how he was able to get open and make
plays and score like touchdowns from like forty yards like
you did. He had an awesome career.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
And now he's not not even the most popular person
in this household.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
I mean, it's crazy he made it that way.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
We're talking with Longhord grade Jamal Charles. Have you officially
switched allegiances yet? Are you? Are you team SEC? Now?
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Yeah? I'm definitely team My team is there. I had to,
you know what I'm saying. So, Uh, I had to
because of University of Texas. Uh, we're trying to come
in not saying we're gonna dominate, but you know, we
gotta we got our shoes to fill each and every week.
You know what I'm saying, These teams that are in
the SEC is no slouch over like in the Big twelve,
Like I feel like you can more relax, but now
(04:05):
like we play an indivision where you can't relax or
you're gonna get embarrassed.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Yeah, it is crazy to say it's Jamal, But twenty
years ago you and the Texas song Horns hoisted the
national Championship. Does it feel like it's been twenty years?
It doesn't feel like.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
It doesn't feel like people keep saying that, and it
doesn't feel that at all. It feels weird, like like
more like fifteen years, not you know what I'm saying,
like twenty years. So uh, it's just it's crazy how
people bringing up the twenty years and making it like, man,
I feel like I'm an old man. Come on, you
can't say twenty years.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
It is wild though, I mean, we want to talk
about one championship can change a life, a life for
everybody like v Y Vince Young. Everywhere he goes, he's
still a beloved and known for that game. Because if
y'all lose. It's a great season, it's a great career,
but nobody see changes.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Yeah, yeah, I think everybody life changes. I think I
wouldn't even be here if I won a natural championship,
you know what I'm saying. So I think everybody liked changes. Uh,
just being able what we did that year and winning
it was, you know, incredible. You know what I'm saying.
I haven't won after. I want that. I haven't won
like that ever again, experienced that feeling, that taste that
(05:21):
other people would love to feel again, like winning a
super Bowl. And that was my only super Bowl and
it was special to me. And it only happened because
I was nineteen. I suck though, you know, and I
couldn't go nowhere and I was at the hotel they
was going out. I was nineteen. Yeah, I had to
stay there any drink gatorading and play video games all night.
(05:43):
So probably for the best. But they was going out
with my master coming here. I was like, y'all going
out that we're going to the mansion.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
I'm like, man, McConaughey, you can still team still hangs
out all the time. So it is wild to Texas.
I mean They've become kind of running back you here
the last two decades. Say it start, you know with
you and of course Johnson, Jonathan Brooks and this current
group CJ. Baxter's back healthy with who was awesome. Uh
(06:13):
what do you make of this this backfield this year?
Speaker 2 (06:15):
I think it's excited to watch, you know what I'm
saying with baxing Ben out. You know what I'm saying
that he's going to be hungry, dedicated to show people.
You know what I'm saying, he's still that that top
running back and it's gonna bring the best of the
best out of him. You know what I'm saying. Being
like competing with each other. Uh, I think you're gonna
have a sharp mirriod of time of like, uh, your opportunity,
(06:37):
Like you get the ball, you got to make it
best because if not, I gotta get I gotta everybody
gonna get that. Gotta get a chance to get the ball.
If you don't do nothing with it, he's gonna only
gonna feed the person that you know what I'm saying
that that keep on changing the game and keep on
make an impact on the game. I feel like it's
going to bring a high competition between all the running
backs now that wises I mean backs in his back
(07:00):
and you know what I'm saying was it had a
great season last year, so they know that this year
is an opportunity. Like everybody exciting about arch but I'm excited.
I bought the running back because they know they got
to make the best the opportunity when they get the ball.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Yeah, you gotta be balanced. Give me your thoughts on
on arch. I mean it seems like, you know, all
the hype and everything I say this, I mean, he's
still is. He was a top recruit. But even if
his name was Archie Davis, the high expectations the manning
name doesn't along with it. But I mean, like I've
been interviewed the guy a couple of times and I'm
even I'm taking it back by how mature. Yeah around
(07:34):
it he gets Yeah, yeah that's where to described us.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
I like it. Man, the kid is humble. Man, the
kid is really like down the earth. Like he came
up to me and like, man, my daddy loved You
know what I'm saying, I got shirt with his daddy
one time. He just come just come up to say
stuff like that. Like some kids won't even won't even
want to come up to me. But just having him
like and just hearing like how the kids respect him,
all the other kids like, man, he got so much wag.
He bring a different energy. You know what I'm saying
(07:58):
that that when they were saying, which he bring a
different energy to Quinn and I'm like, man, that's pretty cool.
So just seeing him like the way he moved, like
mature and humble and and and just basically you know
what I'm saying, knowing that he's the opportunity that's coming up.
He's seen that before. You know what I'm saying. It's
not is he seen that he been in a room
(08:19):
with at the high of other people, times with his uncle.
You know what I'm saying, He's he's been in the
low both, so he under he knows the game. You
know what I'm saying. I think he's more burning the
touch for towards his father. You know what I'm saying.
His father is like you know, he want to prove
his father, you know what I'm saying. So I think
it's it's something in that too.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
You know what you don't want to hear Jamal Charles Man,
my granddad loved you. You don't want to hear that.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
That means you're getting Oh yeah, no, I have kids.
Now come to me. They dad come in like man,
I told him, check up your highlights and they go
back and I see him. Man, man, he was amazing.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
This is a little like VHS.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Yeah, yeah, it's better.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
While you go back and watch highlights from like two thousand,
why does this look This wasn't that long ago.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
It's better. It's better than the high lights back in
in CDs.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
Even the National Championship highlights from five It's like the boxing.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
Yet we spoiled them, like we so spoiled these days.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
Yeah, do you have a favorite memory from that night?
Speaker 2 (09:19):
By the way, ask you from the Yeah, I mean
not really. It just wasn't blur, Like I was still
shocked when we won, and it was just like man,
and then like I didn't really do nothing. I just
stayed in the hotel that night and I was roommates
with Jamichael Finley and and we were just looking and
(09:42):
just talking about the next year.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
There were so many pross like the teammate it the league.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
Yeah, like on both teams, you know what I'm saying.
USC team like the Mountain players on both teams that
went on like it was incredible like that that uh
it was we had pro We didn't even know it,
but it was pretty cool to have that, uh that game.
Speaker 1 (10:03):
So we're talking with Longhorn legend Jamal Charles. He is
here on behalf of bushes big beans and the Hot
Honey grilling beans. And you got some boots. We're getting
a picture of the boots, but I'm gonna take them off.
You're gonna take them off? What? So they designed these
boots and what it's fans will get two chances to
win their own pair.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
Oh yeah for tailgate. You got to have a bowl
statement on tailgate. So I'm definitely turning up on tailgate.
You don't see the details and it nice. They got
thermal heat it right here so when you go on
the sun, it's just basically you can't touch it your
feet more on my feet of them, and I'm gonna
need it for the cold when the sunhout. You know
what I'm saying. But the details on it is really pretty.
(10:45):
I like the most about these. I try to weigh
with my uh you see the flame, but they said,
God don't do that, So I have to put my
on my I was like, all right, then, I'm doing
what y'all tell me to do. I wanted to come
with a bold statement.

at the tail game. Load up on tail game. Hiding honey. Yeah, yeah,
he got my own beans. Baby, damn like that. I

Speaker 1 (11:58):
Oklahoma got better.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
They don't scare me. We got better too. See, I'll
be trying to stay homeble your record against something two
and one? Oh okay, so they got I could have
I could have been three, and oh I should have
been three and oh no, I'm too one not one
in two right right? They got one for me. But uh, man,
that game still hunt me. It should have been three.
(12:21):
And oh I was going in the end zone, they know,
and I got the ball. Uh hit me from the
boy I was going in. Somebody to scoring the ball
came up like, oh yeah, that's still hunt me for
this day. Man. I hope man getting who but I'm
two on one against them.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
I know you're in the the Texas Hall of Fame.
You're going in this year. We gotta get you the

But hopefully you know what I'm saying. I've been the
chief Hall of Fame one day.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
Yeah, I think Pro Football Hall of Fame. Man, what
you did one of the best facts ever.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
I mean, I hope so I hope my numbers, my
numbers max some of the people that's in the in
the Hall of Fame. So uh, i'd be it'd be
a blessing to see that the time come that they
see what I did as a running back, like you
know what I'm saying, Like especially like having one of
the records like for four touchdown or as a running back,
as a wide receiver having one hundred and ninety yards
(13:19):
receives a running Wikipedia.
