Concluding the Christmas holiday yesterday, the NFL celebrated with two Netflix special games on their platform as the Kansas City Chiefs took on the Pittsburgh Steelers, followed by our very own Houston Texans taking on the Baltimore Ravens. Kicking off their highly anticipated evening game, the Texans fall drastically to the Ravens as the team seemed to be a bit in disarray against one of their top competitors in the AFC division. With the possibility of seeing them again through the postseason and with a final score of 31-2, the Texans seem to have suffered their worst loss of the season. Noting their difficult schedule and playing roughly back to back games in the span of ten days, Texans Insider Aaron Wilson joins and helps assess yesterday's game and what adjustments must be made going forward as we enter the last weeks of the regular season.

Speaker 1 (00:01):
The Shawn Salisbury Show continues. Now it's time to welcome
an NFL insider, Aaron Wilson to the show. Aaron Wilson
covering the NFL and the Texans for KPRC two Channel
two Sports. You can find him on Twitter at Aaron
Wilson Underscore NFL. You can also find his work on

(00:21):
our website Sports seven ninety dot com. Aaron, Merry Christmas.
Hope you had a great holiday with your loved ones.
Obviously you were at the game yesterday and just right
there to start, Aaron, it was ugly, to say the least.
Lamar Jackson and Derek Henry did everything they wanted against
these Texans. Just simple question, what is your biggest takeaway
from that ass whooping the Ravens put on the Texans yesterday?

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Well, I agree with the assessor of the players in
the locker, including Robert Woods and Will Anderson Jr. They
called it embarrassing and they should be embarrassed. It is
a very bad look for a team that's a playoff
team to be uncompetitive, to not be able to tackle,
to take such poor pursuit angles, to look like you're

(01:05):
standing still. Lamar Jackson said that he was just jogging,
even though he's running twenty one miles per hour, fastest
of his career on that touchdown run. And they were
confused by the two tight end sets in the backfield
and all that is to clear space. Todd Munkin out
coached the Texans. It's an ugly performance, substandard and they're

(01:29):
usually stat on defense on the other side of the football.
I think this is more concerning and my bigger takeaway
for CJ. Stroud to keep missing these open throws, to
be under this much duress, to not play like the confident,
vibrant quarterback that he was just a year ago, it's
very concerning. You know, have they broken CJ. Stroud due
to the lack of protection and has that affected his mechanics? Yes,

(01:54):
I believe it has. He throws off his back foot,
his delivery isn't the same. He really has to go
back to square one or where he is as a quarterback.
And we know he's talented, we know that he has
the right mental makeup and character. The issue is, you know,
you're and you're affected by what's going on in front
of you. It affects everything. And no, he doesn't have

(02:17):
really ideal weapons but he's got some things that he
needs to be effective, and I don't think the status
really tell the true story of how rough a game
that was for CJ. Stroud. And yeah, the Ravens are
a good defense, but you know, you can't just always
say well, they're good, or we make mistakes or we
don't execute. At some point that becomes who you are.

(02:40):
I thought very very telling comment from Will Anderson. And
he doesn't usually show a lot of frustration, but this
time he was about looking in the mirror and as
captains need to get on guys, help people accountable. It
doesn't sound like they're fracturing, but it certainly sounds like
they're have legitimate reason for concern about everything that's coaching

(03:02):
Daniel Hunter. You probably saw the interview he did with us.
He kept saying that we got a game plan better,
and that sounds like an indictment the coaching staff. You know,
it's a tough situation right now for the Texans. Yeah,
and you.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
Know Aaron with CJ. I want to take it a
step further. Is he almost in a position to fail
because we talked about it a little bit earlier. Where's
the motions? Where are the check with me, Where is
the ability to be able to check out of a
play like it just kind of seems like, right, Bobby Sloweck, Hey,
here's your play call. Love it or not. This is
what we're doing.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
There's no red browns, there's no pick plays, there's none
of the things that other offenses have been doing. It's
basically like a very light version of the West Coast
offense that the forty nine ers run. But it's like
almost like the elementary version. It's not the advanced version.
Whether that's because they don't know if they have the

(03:59):
personnel players to handle it. You see, lesser talented teams
sometimes scheme their way into things. And you know, you
talk about being creative, Look what Ben Johnson done on
that play against the Bears just a week ago. Guys
pretend to fall down and these throw it. I mean,
just you got to come up with stuff. That's what
play callers do. You got to innovate, you gott to

(04:20):
be creative, and right now, that's not what they're doing.
And you know, for Bobby Slowick, he's got to do
a better job, and he's been very accountable all year.
That's not the issue. It's just a matter of actually
just getting the job done, not well, you know, this
guy's trying or things like that. That's not good enough.
It's a bottom line business and bottom line are not

(04:41):
getting it done, and that's why fans are upset. That's
why people are bullying. That's why you're seeing what you're
seeing on social media. I don't know if CJS draft
has a lot of opportunity to succeed other than you know,
if Nico Collins is wide open. You know, I thought
it was good that they truly John metch you the
third a little bit, But where's the running game? You know,
there's no holes, there's a lot of tackle breaking and

(05:05):
some of the play calling in it's questionable for them
to blow that red zone opportunity. I thought that's kind
of when the game really turned, because right after that
the Ravens march ninety nine yards against you, and then
the ball games over. It's not ten two at seventeen
to two, and it's all she wrote.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
Aaron Wilson, joining us here on the Shawn Salisbury Show,
covers the NFL and the Texans for KPRC too. You
can also find his articles on our website Sports seven
ninety dot com and on Twitter at Aaron Wilson Underscore NFL. Aaron,
I want to talk about Bobby Slowick. One thing that
I know Sean and I have discussed here on the
show is at the end of the day, the players
have to execute their place. And I want to piggyback

(05:44):
a little bit off of what Dan said with ct
J Stroud being put in position to succeed. Bobby Sloan's
offense has basically been inconsistent all season long. So where
does the accountability factor? I know you said he holds
himself accountable, but yet we still see the same inconsistent
offense and now the running game is nonexistent. So what

(06:06):
needs to change as we head into the last game
of the season and then obviously the playoff bound to
play in the wild card round? What needs to change? Though,
because it's the same thing every single week.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
Right, You got to think that if you just keep
doing the same thing without success, that's really the definition
of stupidity. You have to change when something's not working,
And I think in any walk of life or industry, right, So,
an offensive coordinator job is to adapt to the defense
and to use the personnel the best you can to

(06:39):
try and get yourself some points in first downs, and
we're just not seeing any real creativity or willingness to change.
It's repetitive. Yeah, they were doing screens well for a
little while, but the last couple of weeks it's didn't work.
So okay, you can't stick with it when it's not working.
You got to try those things. If the running name

(06:59):
is broken, maybe get some other people in there. I
think you have to animate and you gotta make changes.
But you know, I remember, I think it was Nickusio
or right before the bye week, and he expressed support
for Bobby Slock. I don't think there's been a question
lately asked of Dimko Ryans about Bobby, but I would
imagine they'd be steadfast support. They's to share an office

(07:22):
together in San Francisco ultimately when this thing is done,
and we'll have a lot of more conversations about it.
But I don't think we're gonna be talking about, oh, yeah,
they rallied the last two games, or they made a run.
If it stays like this yet, the question, you know,
are you coming back with Bobby Sloweck? Is he going
to be your off the coordinator next year? Does he

(07:43):
have the same level responsibilities if he does come back,
are you looking at other people and or do you
chalk it all up and say, oh, it's all the
offensive line. I don't think that you can be able
to be that simple about it. I think is the
problem are a mixture of the play calling and the personnel.

(08:04):
It's not on one thing or one man. But yeah,
ultimately he's gonna be held accountable for the lack of success.
Do I anticipated change? Not necessarily. I could see them
running back.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
Yeah, I mean, and that was gonna be where I
was going to go with this. I mean, I know
it's a little card ahead of the horse. You've still
got a game this week, You've still got at least
one playoff game. But eventually there is going to be
the after the season press conference, and you gotta believe Aaron,
that's got to be. The first question is what's Bobby's status?
But not only him, I mean, what other changes could
you see after the season this team making to their

(08:41):
coaching staff.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
I think they'll be a new offensive line coach. In
fact that I'm very sure of that, and wouldn't be
necessarily have to be a firing. You know, there could
be a retirement Fergus Tausser. That could be the offering
that something that was on the table before the season.
You could see other changes, you know, I don't know
of this. I don't want to name a bunch of

(09:04):
other names. But that's just why I'm I'm very sure of.
I don't anticipate like widespread changes of the staff. I
also anticipate someone getting a head coaching job from the
base of the season. So I know the Bobby was
popular last year, got a lot of head coaching interviews,
doesn't necessarily mean that has to happened again this year.

(09:25):
Maybe he's getting some interviews, maybe not. But I just
don't see a lot of change. I mean, I think
geradd Johnson, he got off of scordin interviews last year,
he'll be and probably involved in those discussions quarterbacks coach.
And a lot of people say, why can't he beat
off Squorter. The only reason somebody's got off scordinator is
because they don't have a play calolling background. The only

(09:46):
guy on staff that has a big play calling background
is the Laser. And this would be the best quarterback
you ever had to work with if he was promoted internally.
Should there be some sort of change, and I would
rule out that, but you know, just calculating. You know,
we don't know what they're going to do. I don't
think they've decided what they're going to do, so I
don't know for the cart too far before the horse,

(10:08):
But those questions will be asked, and I think there
will be changes. There's obviously gonna be changes to the
offensive line. I think that there will be pretty widespread
across that line. They try to improve the blocking. Unless
you have an offensive line that can protect and run block,
you're not going anywhere. There's the offensive league Now. You

(10:29):
can't just win on defense, and normally they're a good defense,
but that's not enough to win football games. It's not
going to work. You have to be able to outscore
the other team. You got to be a really dynamic offense,
and they're not, and I think they're going to have
to make some tough decisions and a wide receiver. So
you know, tank noil horrific injury as they're reported, lots

(10:50):
of extra linaments torn in addition to the ACL and
miniscus damage too, So you know, what are you doing?
Are you bring back Stefon Diggs hoping that his ACL
is back and he can play, you know, sometime in September,
October or November. I don't know. I think they're gonna
have to draft a receiver. They gonna do a lot
of things. This team is not even close to Super

(11:15):
Bowl contention, and they're still the only team in the South
that's never even reached the AC Championship game. They can't
just be satisfied winning a week division Me and the
Kings of the South.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
Aaron Wilson, NFL insider, Texans insider for KPRC to a
couple more minutes with Aaron joining us here on the
Seawn Salisbury Show. I want to stay with the offensive
line real quick, Aeron, you were with Titus Howard yesterday
after the game, We played the audio from your interview
with him, and then you look across the locker room.

Speaker 2 (11:47):
CJ.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
Stroud admitted it was probably the worst game of his career.
He said that his poor play defeated the team's energy.
Will Anderson Junior was very very transparent about that type
of play. Daniell N talked about game planning. Demiko said
it was, you know, the simple message was check yourself
right and then you go to Titus Howard who's on

(12:08):
the offensive line, and he says, oh, I'm not worried,
I'm not concerned. I should take that back. He said,
I'm not concerned. Are you buying that?

Speaker 2 (12:20):
I think he's being honest, that he's being sincere, which
you see with a lot of the guys when it
comes to the answers, and so some if you notice
some guys like Derrick Stingley, universe is saying the execute execution,
So when the coach says something after the game, it's

(12:40):
parrodied and that doesn't mean they still listen to it.
To Nika Lyons, that's great, but it doesn't always lead
to the most you know, open of exchanges with Titus.
I just think they never want to portray panic. You
guys saw it wasn't on camera interview I did with
Larry Me and he says, they have to move on.

(13:02):
It's a bad l I think a lot of guys
they compartmentalize. He doesn't want to dwell on it. That
was an LT's comment. It was very similar to what
Titus know. His sentiments and they don't like to dwell
on anything. But you got to learn from games too,
and you know it's details. They bring that up too

(13:23):
within those conversations. So I don't take it as lack
of accountability. I take it more is you know, not
wanting to be negative. Maybe kick yourself when you're down.
I know fans prefer to hear in media players saying,
you know, more of a bold statement like what you heard, brothers.
But everybody has their own media style. Nobody in the

(13:45):
offensive line generally. I don't see a lot of spicy
quotes on offensive line around the NFL. So I mean
this is kind of the personality of an offensive lineman,
a d lineman like well Anderson, Yeah, a little more aggressive,
a little more feisty about it. It doesn't make you know,
the answer is ridiculous. It's just it's not what people
want to hear. They want to hear like unacceptable, we

(14:07):
will fix it. If you said that, and it's not applied,
how is it any different? I guess it's just more
basically those public relations what answer would you prefer to
hear an effort CJ say this, I could tell you
that we'll be fine or going be okay. Do I
think that they were dealing with the tank del thing
a little bit and of course, playing within you know,

(14:29):
all these games and a short span, even though that's
what everybody else had to do. Sure, I think that's
a little bit of a factor. I mean, why was
the energy so bad? All these guys kept saying bad
energy lethargic. I mean they have two or four players
to say that, so I've got to I mean they're
the ones out there, you know, feeling that energy or
not feeling it, and that's not good too. I mean

(14:49):
it's the coaching staff's job and the player's job to
have high energy and be ready. Why you wouldn't be
despite the tiredness and being sad about Tank excited? This
game with an international audience. It's on Netflix. You got
Beyonce there. This team beat you in the playoffs. That's
another thing I didn't hear a lot of you know
that they kind of owed the Ravens one after what

(15:10):
happened in the playoffs, and they just they get beat
even worse than the playoff games. Just uncompetitive. I think
it is time. I mean, like Samiko Ryans alluded to,
it is time to everybody to check yourself. And you
know they've got time to do if it got a

(15:32):
long time till the Titans game, which could be like
a preseason game. Guys, there's not probably gonna be a
lot at stake, if anything other than rest or maybe
trying to improve your play. I think that guys are
going to be in and out of there, especially key
players like a CJ. Stroud. Why would you risk him
playing out there against the Titans.

Speaker 1 (15:51):
Yeah, you don't, Aaron. We appreciate the coverage, We appreciate
you joining us every single week. Thank you, and we'll
give you a shout next week manager your weekend the
Saturday Sunday games. Thanks again.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
Thanks guys with me time.

Speaker 1 (16:04):
That's Aaron Wilson, NFL Insider, Texans Insider for KPRC Channel
to Sports. Well, let's get to break and we'll come back.
And I kind of sum up when Aaron Wilson had
to say about these Texans
