Coming into the season with some pretty high standards as we enter Week 4 of the NFL, the Houston Texans have yet to grasp a win for the season as they currently sit at the bottom of the AFC South Division, 0-3. Set to take on rookie quarterback Cam Ward and the Tennessee Titans this Sunday in hopes of gaining their first win, lots of questions are raised about the Texans' season following their 0-3 start. Weighing out Sunday's odds between the two, and with the offensive production still a major issue at hand, many wonder if this team can muster up enough points to get Sunday's victory. Talking production and a few personnel adjustments around the team recently, Aaron Wilson shares a few things to take note of as we head into Sunday's kickoff.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
In the nine o'clock the Hour here on a fight
song Friday brings us our good buddy Aaron Wilson, Texans
insider for US here at seven ninety, but also too
does some work with KPRC two. Aaron, appreciate it, buddy.
Let's just go ahead and get it started off here offensively,
and we played the cut from Nick Kayley earlier of
I seen some good things. Awesome guys are doing some

(00:21):
good things in certain spots. But overall, do you feel
like he's maybe just trying to tell himself that or
are we actually seeing some good things offensively?

Speaker 2 (00:32):
I think he's just trying to stay positive. I think
a lot of this. You know, when people go to
the podium, you know, you have to think about what
you're training for media, how do you approach these situations?
And I would say, you know, coming from the New
England Patriots and also just football coaches in general, if
he goes up there and he starts ripping his guys,

(00:52):
obviously he'll lose his players, lose the locker room. And
I don't think Nick is Steriodimika Ryan would like that
at all. So yeah, he has to maintain a unified
positive front. And he's also a rookie offensive coordinator, So
what has he done before? He's been a good assistant coach.
This is entirely different. It's like someone hasn't driven a

(01:14):
car before. You just you're out there, you're learning on
the job. And for Kaylee, I don't think like just
I can't think gaffs. I would say, I don't think
that personnel really fits the scheme he's trying to run,
if that makes sense. He's trying to do something and
it's really it hasn't adapted to not having a a

(01:36):
very good offensive line and not much of a running game.
Who scares you on the Texans offense if you're the
opposing defensive coordinator. Nobody just Nico Collins. Well, I mean
like Nico doesn't, but yeah, no one else. There's no
one else that she said, Man, that's a threat. If

(01:56):
we don't stop him or account for him, we're losing
this game and we might get blown out. I mean,
CDs Drive is still a competent quarterback. I would say
he's been deeply affected by lack of open receivers and
an offensive line that's now struggling, and it could be

(02:18):
even worse. I think maybe somewhre what you're hearing from him.
I think the most interesting thing he probably said was
that we're not just copy pasting the Patriots offense. That
was an interesting comment, right, you know what?

Speaker 3 (02:31):
And Aaron, when I say Nico cons I'm talking about
when things aren't going well, nobody's scares and when they're
going good, that's the guy you got to take away,
no doubt. So let me go back to this, and
this may be a difficult one to answer, then why
why if you're Demiko Ryans, why go get I know
the background in New England and the Rams, but why
go get a rookie play caller after you just left

(02:51):
with a second year play caller didn't hit it? You
got We're fortunate when he was a rookie play caller.
Why not go the opposite and go get a veteran
that you don't have to start all over again? Why
do it?

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Was?

Speaker 3 (03:02):
It almost feels what's not ancestual, but you know like
it's family, and it is because of the Framps familiarity.
But sometimes you got to step outside the box. They
got a guy who is going to have to learn
on the job, and that's not what you want why
even though I think Nick Kyley can be good. Right
now it feels like they're swimming, but your if their

(03:22):
feet are moving one hundred miles an hour like a
water polar person under the water.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
You know, it was the whole Ni Casera recommendation and
his background with Sean McVay, different systems, just creating some appeal.
Interviewed very well, is very smart and you know view
just a very good person, high character guy. He made
a great impression. He had his own ideas and they thought, well,

(03:49):
can he take us to the next level. A lot
of it too, like when you interview anybody, what impression
they leave with you? Right? And then sometimes though, you
got to go back like what you're talking about and say, well,
what else is out there? So they met with someone
that's highly experienced in chip Kelly and Shipe won an
exorbitant amount of money. They never they ever even got
really very far down the road like, oh they're outbid.

(04:09):
It's just like the had a brief Chad. It didn't
seem like he was going anywhere. He was interested in
the Raiders rights, interested in him. He got six million,
which is a crazy amount of money for an OC,
but they were going with someone they thought was up
and coming. He still may be up and coming. It's
not like he all of a sudden everything he did
that's out the window. What I think they gotta do, Sean,

(04:32):
is they've got to be able to hang into NAFC
South Race while he learns on the job. And the
way he is is off a cordator four games in
is not the same as he'll be ten twelve weeks in.
It's the hope for them in the building. And you know,
some of these things they do, like throwing it short
of sticks or not getting out of the huddle. I mean,

(04:55):
some of these things are fixable. You can tangibly change
your style if you're him, And I think he's catching
on to that because he's saying some things in the
press conference that are telling me, I get it, we're
not doing that well enough. So I know there are
trying to address some that behind the scenes tangibly to
actually fix some of the stuff. But it's a lot
of things to fix all at once. Yep. And if

(05:17):
offense is a mess right now, but I don't think
that they're hopeless, right is my greatest takeaway from.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
It, especially as a rookie play caller, all the stuff.
When you got to fix that, it's hard to focus on.
The one thing you need to do is get your
team offensively in the right play on a regular basis. Okay,
so let me ask you then, at this stage, heading
into game four, what's better for them to expand to
get more production or to simplify to get more production.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
Simplify And it really needs to be as simple as this.
Stop bunching up the receivers. These three guys all standing
near each other, drifting. That's got to get corrected. That
was one of the things that came up yesterday during
the press conference. That's kind of obvious to everybody, you know,
you see it. These guys are all close together, so

(06:06):
you gotta have more spacing. You can't all just be
standing next to each other. That basically makes everybody covered.
It's like, Uh, if you're gonna run away from uh
people are chasing you, would you all run in the
same direction. Now you'd spun out. He's a kind of
the same concept there. On offense running, you can't abandon

(06:29):
the run. You can't just stop running. You've got to
still attempt to run the football. I think that's something
they got away from too much this past week, because
to me, Chubb and Marks still have some upside. There's
some yards and those guys I agree with not having
Damian Pierce out there or not playing Dariga Walle. Yeah,

(06:50):
that they've shown you what they're gonna be like. And
I think they ignore the tight end too much. Dalton
Schultz is playing pretty good football. Let them get some
more targets. If they're they're all over Nico, throw it
to the tight end. I thought last week was just
a knockoff the rust week for Christian Kirk, But there's
probably something there that they can tap into to get

(07:12):
a little more out of him. But you know, they
weren't really in sync. They threw to him eight times
the had like I think three catches twenty five yards.
So there's got to be more there and offensive line
not chip blocking for ariantia Ursery. When he's out there
against Shosh him found one of the most efficient rushers
in football. That was the biggest thing that I call

(07:33):
him sort of malpractices, Like you got to help this kid.
He's out there swimming. He's a good kid. He's got
a lot outside. He's working hard, but he needs help.
Can't just leave him alone out there.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
Aaron Wilson again here with US Sports Talk seven ninety
Texans Insider, also with some work with KPRC two. Find
him on Twitter at Aaron Wilson underscore NFL and the
secondary right right now. And I know that the news
earlier this week. CJ. Gardner Johnson, you talked about it
with Matt and Ross.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (08:05):
One of the official talking points out there, Aaron, is
that struggled to catch on to Demico's scheme. Aaron, the
guys played in the league for about seven years. Do
you really buy that?

Speaker 2 (08:15):
Like, come on, man, No, he refused to play the scheme.
From my sources, he freelanced. He did what he wanted
to do, and then he would blame other people when
it was his fault for a big play. Then he
would make fun of guys contracts and say he should
be paid more. And he constantly compared this situation to Philadelphia.

(08:36):
That didn't sit well with people. And in general, he
was just well, he'd have his good days, he'd have
a lot of bad days. And you know this annoyed
some guys. There's some people that liked him, like his energy,
thought he was cool and he was fun for the media,
and I like him. I mean I was around him.
I always had fun talking ball with him, and he's

(08:59):
one of the more cult characters. He reminded me of
some of the Ravens guys I covered. Not as good
a player, but you know, kind of that just sort
of eccentric energy, like Ed Reed guys like that. But yeah,
and he's just a little off out there and he
didn't fit inmate. Yeah, he was a bad teammate. He

(09:20):
wasn't a great teammate. He one time he said this
to me. I met with him, and he says, sometimes
I'm too much, And basically I felt like that was
a really true moment from him where he's acknowledging, hey,
I'm a lot. And that's when one of the teammates
told me he said, this guy is a lot, and
he had to go, Uh, it's not he's a bad person,

(09:41):
it's just but he the things he did don't fit
well into this culture. And there's a reason why he's
changed teams so many times. Guys, he was not fitting in.
And this was brewing for weeks. I've been hearing about it,
and he was almost let go weeks ago, he asked
for a red. He did a bunch of stuff, even

(10:03):
though they converted his contract and they're on the hook
for that. They just it's been a lot that they're
paying him not to be.

Speaker 3 (10:11):
Here, especially that early, Dan and Aaron, when you know
this a month into the season, that's not just a
kind of a problem. That's a major issue, and you
can either let it get him out and they did
what they felt.

Speaker 2 (10:25):
Yeah too, And I think they're better off with m J.
Stewart and eventually built Jimmy Ward if he gets free
of the NFL's kind of like the last legs of
their due diligence. And he's a couple of weeks away
from maybe being able to get out there and do
something at practice. A guy that's closer as Jalen read,
the hard hitting rookie from Penn State. And I think

(10:47):
he could get designated for return, and then it's probably
a couple of weeks because he's this time. You need
a couple of weeks when you missed a month. Get
your legs back under you.

Speaker 1 (10:57):
Real quick here, Aaron, before we get you out the door.
Anything on Joe Mixon, he.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
Will not be playing anytime soon. If at all. I
have not penciled him into any lineups for the season.
Anything they get from him will be considered a bonus.
It's I know that. I think some people are gonna
probably think, because this is the fourth week he's eligible,
but no, he won't be being activated. It's just a

(11:25):
tough and complicated medical situation. Is when his sources have
described it to me, lots of extra procedures he had
outside of the building. That's why there's a reason why
it's called non football injury. They are paying him, though,
and yeah, it's just unfortunate what's happened to Joe, because
Joe probably would make this offense look at least decent.

(11:47):
But without Joe, it's it's just not the same. But yeah,
I wish Joe a speedy recovery. But man, it's been
a lengthy recovery for him.

Speaker 3 (11:55):
I think he was the toughness and heartbeat of the offense.
I know, we got to let you go, Aaron, but
to me, this is even a much bigger blow than
we even think I do. It's been there's a attitude,
everything that goes with toughness. He epitomized and his production
was pretty damn good.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
Too.

Speaker 3 (12:11):
It's a major blow. Not having him this year is
going to be an uphill struggle in this run game
the entire time, no.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
Doubt, no doubt, dude.

Speaker 1 (12:17):
Ye all right, good stuff. Are appreciate it again our

Next week, Aaron, we'll talk.
