felt that last year and I said I think he's
best player on the team all around.

he was learning, you know, a little commitment on the
defensive end. They're getting more out of that because then

love that All Star game.

I've always wanted if a guy goes through and impresses
in spring and they say great, especially on a team
right now, that you can't I'm even including jose Al Tuovy.
Now he's going to play great. But if it wasn't
for Josel two Vay's bat, we'd be utterly concerned. Oh yeah,
him going to left field, because you say, okay, what is.

and from all sounds of it that he's that he's like,
it's almost like he's rejuvenated, starting something with something new.
It like adds youth to your life, and so he'll

was an average player, and you're moving the left field,

you'd be even more concerned. His bat makes you feel
better about his left field, and he may end up
being thriving out there, but we don't know. You sure
as hell don't know what you're gonna get offensively in centerfield,
and you don't know what you're going to get offensively
in right field, and quite frankly, none of them are
going to have arms that make you go wow. So
with this, I've just never understood the concept. Maybe I

think different. If I'm playing football and I'm coaching a
team and the freshman quarterbacks better than the varsity starter,
I'm playing the friend play him, I.

Have no problem.

Well, aren't you worried that if he throws an interception
the first half? What if it ruins it for the
rest of his high schoolreer career? Then he was going
to get ruined anyway. And you tell that person says
that your mindset sucks. Yeah, if that's the way goes,
because I guarantee the freshman quarterbacks mindset isn't thinking like that, right,
And my job as a coach would be to convince
him not to think like that, but to think like

I tell them all, oh, you're fresh to gett ready,
and it's okay to play freshman or JV ball, but
I want you thinking like you can start on the varsity.
Preparing like you're gonna start on the varsity coming right
out of the eighth grade.

Why not? It sets your side time, But be prepared
that okay.

If it's not gonna if it's not a reality as
a freshman, that's okay. But I want him to train
like they own the job. I didn't say, act like
you own it. Train like you own it, and then
when you get there, make sure that the guys around
you know that you own it by performance, not by
talking about it.

And so the same thing here.

If this guy continues to prove he can handle major
league pitching throughout spring training, and I know it's spring training,
but well let's send him down for a couple months.
How about bringing him up for a couple months, see
how that works. With the availability to send him down.
He may never go that. We've seen it happen with
Bob Horner. There's guys that have just come up right
out of the blue, you know, even if it's been

a minimal amount of time. Bryce Harper was in the
minor league but a minute, and I understand even Harper
and Trout go to the minor leagues.

I get it, But is it a rule.

Does it have to be a mandate that yep, you
know what, he's automatically got to go down. Well, if
he's a big stud and he proves a man I
can handle this, go test his ass.

If there was ever a time that young guys could
make a major league roster, it's now on the and
they we haven't able to go to spring training saying
that very often on this franchise because of their success
and veterans in a lot of positions, and it's a
hard team, and it's been a hard team to get
through to make the roster because the guys in front

of you are producing at your position and I'm just
one of those. Yes, send him to the miners. Let's
make sure he says, starts at double A. Okay, Well,
if he proves he can rake there, why can't we
go the other way? Let him go up there and
see for me it's like anything else. Go to the
batting case, rightan just for fun on a pitching machine

and put it at one hundred and you know you'll
you'll shock you how good quickly that gets you? Yeah,
but then put it at eighty five and watch how
you rake?

Why does it always have to be I'll go to
eighty five. I'm not saying miles proper, but you get first.
But yeah, and then all of a sudden, get Up says, whoo.
You're never going to get used to a buck up
in your kitchen and a guy who can that can
maneuver this. I don't care if you've been playing it
for fifteen years. Those guys that could throw strikes and
hit the black you're always going to struggle with it.
I mean, they're they're good. Listen, Greg Maddox is going
to get you out. Yeah, But I don't understand if

the guy's mentally tough and he's proved he's at the
physical prowess to handle pitching, if he does or not him,
anybody why it's a necessity that we can't just say,
you know what, why can't you start with the big boys?

It's a parent that we can take a high school
kid and turn him into a I mean, there are
high school kids that would leave right now to go
to the NBA and then and they can adjust in
a hurry. Why can't we do that? And I know
it doesn't happen to all of them. But the leisure
about baseball is ask uh, ask the big picture that

we keep talking about. Force Whitley, Ask him how that
feels to be. He's been down there a long time,
and hopefully he's ready for My point is, it doesn't
feel to me like you always have. That has to
be the mandate. If a guy proves he can rake,
and on this roster, there's an opening if you compete
and you see it, can't you go opposite of it
and say, what are you worried that if he comes

up here in his first fifty at Patch struggles. Oh,
he said, oh well that's okay, go back down to
double or to triple A, go rake in sugar Land.
You'll be back up. He's one of about eight million
that have done. It did not not that have gone
right from pulling, you know, getting coming out of college
or high school and playing or college after a couple
of years and playing baseball, getting drafted out of high school.

But if he proves that he can handle it, let's
give him a little more credit mentally that he can
handle failure.

Would you rather fail at sugar Land or failed in
the major leagues? I'd rather get the big leagues right
and and think, Okay, you know what, I was hitting
two twenty, but I so now I get it. Yeah,
now I get because you can Rake and sugar Land
and still come up here in struggle.

dad tries to fudge your birth certificate and you and
you play well enough, yeah, or you struggle you say, oh,
now I get with that. Twelve year old and I'm
nine in his league. Now I know what he's trying
to do. Yeah, that's no different than when they're this age.

So for me, I understand. But you don't have everything.
Doesn't have to be.

Some guys are outside the box players and thinkers.

I don't know if he is or not, but I
can tell you what the way we see a skill
set in the way people talk about him, maybe he's
the different one and why not so?

If he hits two twenty in spring, maybe he's not ready.
But if he proves he is, why do we automatically
get it? We're so worried about people's fragility it drives
me nuts. I mean, you already know such a soft country.
Did we automatically think one guy gets to do it?
That one guy goes through adversity and his career's ruined.

Now for the guy who goes to adversity and his
career's ruined, he was never going to lead you to
a championship anyway. Exactly at some point in time he
would have wilted.

Right. I like to find out early what kind of
wilt factor you got. We already know that the discussion
that we're going to have if if he starts and
because it was it was said when he was traded
here that he was going to be assigned to double A. Okay,
so now if he has a good spring, he's either
he's probably going to start in triple A. If he

goes down there any rakes and continues to do well,
the conversation is going to be we'll bring him up,
bring him up, bring him up. What are you waiting on?
What are you waiting on? So if he has a
good spring, why not just put him on the big league? Ross?

I have no idea, And you know what bothers me,
just what you said when they traded for and I
know these guys see once again, you don't have to
do things. This is when it gets back to why
I'm not an old head or a boomer or what
have you, and certain rules. I think, why do we
got to do it the way they did in two thousand? Yeah,
why do you got to do it the way they
did in nineteen eighty five? Maybe every now and again

there's a guy that's different, and if he's mentally tough,
the physical skills will rear their head. Here's what they
traded for him. What's the first thing you said? They said,
we're designats of double Why why is it an automatic?
We're assigning him to double A just because you know, sometimes,
guess what, when you're going upstairs, do you automatically take
one at a time, or every now and again when

you're feeling energetic to.

So I just don't get we almost put a vice
grip on there. It's almost like we build in limitations.
Why don't you give him the whole, the big picture,
and then let them make it more compact and compressed

worse for confidence if you ask me go to triple

A or double A and struggle and get your ass
kicked there because in your thought processes, I'm never getting
up there. How about get up there, have some success
and some struggles and say I get it. Okay, they
sent me back down, But the next time that'll be different.
Because I can tell you what highlights don't help. You
got to learn it with you. And you know what
stand in the batting practice, soft toss ain't doing you
any good against one hundred. So I just to to me,

maybe I'm a different thinker, and I'm not saying everybody
that's everybody just but that's my point is everybody doesn't
have to be looked at the same. Every guy that's
like designated for Double A maybe a guy you look
at it and say I scouted him wrong. That guy
ain't a double A player. That guy's ready for the
big leagues. Now I don't know if he is, but

news for you. Josh Beckett did. He was just like
Josh Beckett. He spent barely a year in the minor league, right,

for a while. He's got shoulder inflammation. He was flown
back to Houston. Comes back that he's shut down for
a while. Pedro Leone is shut down for a while
with a Grade one MCL strain. So you have, uh,
you have some things going on in the middle of
the bullpen forest, Whilly is gonna have to have to

pitch well? I and I almost look at it. He
gets to pitch in the major league level, it's time. Yeah.

And if not now when healthy ready to go, he's
you know, it's you. I almost feel like you have
to force him in there, even if he's not ready
to make your buddy, I do. I think that you
have to test these waters and see if he can

for him to discover himself. I don't know what role
it's going to be permanently appears a bullpen now, but
he may turn into something special there.
