Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's that time of the week. Astros GM Dana Brown
joining us here on the Sean Salisbury Show Sports Talk
seven ninety as the shows try to salvage a series
against the A's out there in West Sacramento Fromberveldez on
the mound today one point thirty Astros on deck coming
your way, Dana, appreciate your time this morning. You got myself,
Dan Matthews, got Chris Cordy here with you. Let's just
(00:21):
start offensively. Just overarching view of the season. One hundred
and fifty eight down, so for more to go. What
have been your impressions twofold of the team's collective approach
at the plate, but also just the overall production.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
So yeah, the overall production. Uh, you know, the injuries
have certainly played a part, you know, and where we
are right now with the overall production, it's been very tough.
And you know what happens is when you suffer these injuries,
you've got other guys trying to pick each other up.
And it's been a little bit more different guys are
putting a little bit more pressure on themselves and so
(00:57):
it's a snowball effect right now. And then we're feeling it,
you know, because you know, we've been struggling to score
runs and so it's just been you know, disappointing, you know,
mainly because of the injuries. But you know, the guys
are still fighting through it and trying to get through
this thing. And you know, we're still alive. You know,
we're not down, but we're still alive.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Yeah, that's the thing. Dana's you know, mathematically not eliminated,
but it is. It is dire. I mean, they need
to win, find a way to win here. But I
mean you mentioned it. The injuries have taken its toll.
But you know, look, have they been out of this
thing two weeks ago? Okay, we get it. It was
it was insurmountable injuries can't overcome. And yet here they
are still, you know, mathematically with a chance here. But
(01:43):
you know, is there any message you guys send or
mister Crane sends to the team in this situation or
is it just kind of this is on Joe to
rally the troops here, get these guys going and win
these last four games.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Look, we look at it as today, right, we look
at it as today. You need to get this win today.
If we win today, Detroit lous and Boston lose, we're
back to controlling our own destiny. Uh. And so that's
the key. You got to get a win today and
and and that's what's right in front of us. Uh.
You know, it's Joe's talk to the team multiple times.
(02:19):
You know, we've been down you know those roads, you know,
and inspiring the guys to get through it, you know,
even despite the injuries and things like that. And so look,
we we've battled, and I you know, I give Joke
a lot of credit for keeping things together. I know,
you know, most clubs probably couldn't sustain such you know,
I mean, think about it. At one point we had
(02:40):
our one, two and three hitter out all at the
same time. Now we have our one and three hitter
out right now in yourdan Opina And so, uh, it's
just been a absolute grind throughout this entire season with
these injuries, and and the guys continue to go up
every day. And and I know, you know, we're struggling
(03:02):
on this five game losing street. But you have to
turn things around today, you know, And there's a chance
by the end of today we could be back controlling
our own destiny.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
Astros GM Dana Brown joined us for his weekly visit
here on the Seawan Salisbury Show. You mentioned the injuries, Dana,
and just you know, this team fighting through one hundred
and sixty two. Do you sense that there is a
little bit of a wall fatigue wise, that that's been
hit by this team.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
No, it looks like, you know, we've hit a wall
because we're losing.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Right and so when you're winning, you don't think you
hit that wall. But I don't think we hit a
wall yet, you know. I just think that you know,
we've we've lost these five games, and we can turn
things around today. But look, we are running out of time,
make no mistakes, you know, we're running out of time.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
But we got to get things turned around today a
win that it could put us right back. I don't
think we hit a wall, though. I think you know,
we're going through a downtime at a bad time. You know,
this is not a good time to lose five in
a row.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
It is.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
It is tough, like you said, and the injuries have
certainly been a big, big problem with it. You know,
kind of just just to look ahead a little bit,
you know, when you get to the off season, just
evaluating everything and uh, when you look at how I
guess you guys have handled managing injuries and all that,
is that something you think when we do get to
the off season, you guys will look at and the
(04:34):
process of everything from training to uh rehab everything because
it just I mean, it's one thing to have a
couple of injuries day, but the insurmountable injuries you guys
have had, it almost feels like big picture you need
to take a look at every little aspect of how
you guys handle it from from day to day and
everything with the training staff.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Yeah, without getting into too much right now, here's what
I would say. Every year during the office is and
we always you know, have a review of you know,
what we could have done better, Things that we could
do to make the team better, What can we do
to strengthen the team, you know, the whole thing. You know,
we take a complete look and give our assessment as
(05:16):
a group in baseball operations as to what we can do,
what we can do better. So I would say, in
its totality, we will take a complete look, you know,
as a staff and in baseball operations to see what
we can do better. And I would I would leave.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
It at that again Astros GM Dana Brown joining us
for his weekly visit. Hayzus Sanchez has struggled since coming over,
and he's a guy that clearly you guys count on
you bat him in the middle of the order. I mean,
is there anything that you can see that you know,
you guys could be able to be able to make
an adjustment over the off season to be able to
(05:52):
get him to reach the potential that you guys believe
that you were getting when you traded for him.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Yeah. I mean at one point he electric, you know,
and in the batter's box things were going well. Uh.
You know, he had talent, no doubt about it. You know.
The tough part is, uh, you know, sometimes you make
these trades and you thrust these guys right in the
middle of you know, high pressure, high drama, every day
(06:18):
pennant race, playoff chase, you know, and and it could
be it could be overwhelming. It could be overwhelming in
the sense that you know, these guys start to, you know,
put pressure more pressure on themselves and you know that
pressure to perform. You know, it's it could be overwhelming
at times. But you know, the guys very talented. He
(06:40):
has big upside and you know where we're trying to
get him going. You know, if we could just get
him going and and squeak into you know, the postseason,
who knows, you know, this guy may have an outstanding postseason,
but we got to get in and we still believe
in the kid. We still believe in the talent. You know,
we believe in the power and you know, but what
(07:02):
we definitely have to work to try to get him
through this.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
You know, what what have you made of eastcoc Paradus
obviously busted his butt to get back here and rejoin
the team and try to give him a little bit
of offensive infusion before the end of the season. And uh,
you know, obviously he's he's playing through it and doing
his best. But what what will lie ahead for him
when the off season does it is you think he'll
need a surgery, will get reevaluated or uh just kind
(07:28):
of what east Ock Paratus has been given you.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Yeah, he's going to be reevaluated. Uh. He's absolutely grinding
through it, you know. Uh, you know it feels like
at times, you know, he's playing on one leg, you know,
but you know he's toughy enough to be out there. Uh,
you know, not one hundred percent, but grinding through every
single at bat and and and we will make an
(07:52):
evaluation once he's you know, these are medical staff this
offseason hopefully uh, you know, to the heel completely and
he'll be okay. But he is certainly grinding through each
and every at bat right now, trying to provide you know,
help to this event that has has has gone cold again.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
Astros GM Dana Brown here on the Sean Salisbury Show,
Final one for you. I mean we get all the
way to this point, hadn't asked you about injuries? Is
there any chance that we're gonna see yrd on Alvarez
this weekend? And what's the latest on Josh Hater and
minute Susa?
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Yeah, so Hater, you know he's definitely had the and
and another MRI and and and it looks like everything
is healing, but he's still in no throw and so
you know, we're still waiting on him, you know, in
terms of you know, Susa, Look, uh, Susa is still
(08:51):
a guy that you know, we feel confident that we
you know, we we can get into the postseason, that
we can potentially get him back, you know, and uh,
you know, Alvarez uh, you know, he's not doing any
baseball activity, you know, but he's at least uh, you know,
walking and doing some small things you know, on that ankle.
(09:11):
And you know, this is one of those ankles that
you know oftentimes, you know, it's more than you know,
four weeks and we're trying to squeeze everything in but
he's he's still grinding into it. But don't baseball activity
at this time.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
I know I said that was the last one, but
obviously can't end without asking you about yesterday's news. How
much of a bummer about Luis Garcia.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
Yeah, I mean Garcia has fought his way back and
he tried to you know, get back and provide us
some help. You know, he had you know, a few
a few outings he you know, look promising at times.
And it's a bummer, you know, it's a bummer that
he's you know, gonna have to go back under the
(09:54):
knife and you have surgery. You know, we'll have more detail,
you know from the doctor wants to go in. But
it's really tough. You know, it's just it's like it
caps off our entire season with all of these injuries.
You know, I think we've been hit the worst, you know,
out of all the clubs with just all of these injuries.
(10:17):
And you know, I'd like to say, look, we get
this game today or which could really turn this entire
season around if we can just squeeze into the postseason.
So but yeah, certainly, you know, the injury bug has
got us in Garcia. It was very tough news to
deal with.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
Absolutely, Astros GM, Dana Brown. Do you want to see
every single week?
Speaker 4 (10:40):
Dana.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
Hey, really appreciate the time, and hopefully we'll be catching
up with you again next week.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
That would be wonderful. Let's go Astro fans. We still
have four left there.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
We go. Astros GM, Dana Brown, Thanks, Dana, really appreciate it.
