Now, the problem in this town is offense, at least
in two sports, and both the Texans and the Astros.
We saw the Astros struggle with offense for the most
part all year inconsistently, and now the Texans for three
straight games. Is if I'm a defensive player with the
Texans and I know we'll get to that, I'm about
to start open up a cann of Woo pass unless
you guys start pulling your weight.

Okay, and they haven't. They are.

If they're close on offense, then I also am the
offensive coordinator in Houston. They're not anywhere near being close
on offense. And I dare say, there's no way they
can't explode this weekend, right, No way, right? So I
would see right. So, but the Astros, obviously, this is
an important series. And listen, go go ahead and lose

one or two and you can forget it. So you've
put yourself in a buying You talk about resilience in
grit and grind, it's right in front of your face.
The problem is you're hoping somebody else doesn't have it.

teams when they get out of a losing streak.

sweep for you to get in, or if it's the
other way, like I said, and the Tigers finally realize,
hey we're still that team, you know, Scooble pitching, all
that kind of stuff will be all right, and they
sweep that series. Well, then you handle your business in Boston,
see you.

I the way, keeping Detroit out and having Boston and
Houston n would be my ideal thing.

what the hell happens, like who broke something, who upsets somebody?

Weare awful, it's awful. I mean, nobody's got it in
for Houston unfortunately just ran into I mean, the two
of them are controllable by those players. The Fred van
Vliet things a bummer. It's just a flat ass bummer, man.
And you know they're still going to compete and you
got to do it. But they put a little depth
in a little point guard issue because now you're going

to realize how important Van Vliet was to this team.

Unfortunately, sometimes it takes I'm not saying this organization doesn't know,
I've done about all of us to understand. He may
not be Steph Curry, but for this organization, with hadd
and KD and the group to it, he was probably
the perfect And the guy knows how to win, he does,
and he's got a ring on his finger. So I
that was just such a bummer because the things you

can't control, and it's like, oh, they're so close in
the verge. Now it says we'll find somebody else is
gonna have to elevate their game. And I know that
sounds cheesy, but it's just a fact. So it's a
it's been a rough go and all the while out
in Seattle they have just do what they have done
since when they started this run has been pretty incredible.

And then we get to get down to the MVP
talk and I don't know how you vote for this man.

Oh it's easy for me. You think it's cal Raleigh Bingo? Right,
sixty home runs, Yes, That's what I said on another show.

I do and yeah yesterday when I got in late,
you know did later yesterday. Is I to crouch behind
home plate and do what he's done? Is what been
seven guys hit sixty home runs or something in history
of baseball.

And as a catcher, then maybe the fatigue factor.

We know judge and judge his numbers from last year
this year again, dude, he said, you know, he's elevated
his batting average the last two years, cut down on strikeouts.
If Aaron Judge wins it, you can't come. Dude, his
numbers are stupid. But if cal Raley is a premium position,
he's played phenomenal defensive catcher this year, which is no
shock and to do what he's done, and quite frankly,

I don't want to say single handly because you can't
do it single handly a team sport, but I can
tell you this, Without cal Raley, they don't sniff where
they're at right now, even with all that good pitching
and upgrading at the trade deadline. But to me, and
I said, I said, there's that fatigue fact. We know
who judges every year, and there's no way. I mean,
maybe there's a way. But if he hits forty home
runs next year, we'd go, oh my gosh, what a

great year, and everybody else say, well, what a bummer year.

No, this is like it.

Speaker 6 (08:36):
You just don't do what he's done and then still
be able to crouch and do your thing defensively on
a first place team. So it's a listen. If there
was ever a co MVPs this year, you give it
to him. And then you look at Judge who's at
eighty points higher at the plate than cal Raley, and
he plays the outfield and it's important he's a team captain.
Yet cal Rawley's crouching behind the plate. I don't know
how many games he's had to play. One hundred and

forty some games this year. He's had to because you
need his at in the line up the whole time
and to do what he's done. You know, at some
point in time, I think people thought he's gonna fall off.

Well, I know that people say that batting average, that
batting average is an antiquated stat, but I mean you
just talked about it hitting about eighty points higher.

Speaker 4 (09:13):
But here's how it breaks down in one hundreds and.

Speaker 6 (09:16):
You still get down, you still get to the you're
you're you're on base more normally right to higher average.
So it does matter, maybe not as much as it
used to, but it still does matter.

I mean, the difference here is exactly about eight hits
right in between out of one hundred that bats. So
I mean, it's really that much of a difference.

Speaker 4 (09:33):
I just it is.

Speaker 6 (09:34):
I it is if you're talking on the team's scheme,
because if those eight hits, somewhere along the line you
drove in two runs and it caught the Astros. There's
eight hits in runners in scoring position. That is going
to mean the difference in winning making the playoffs or not.

Speaker 4 (09:48):
No, you're one. You get my point.

Speaker 6 (09:50):
If those eight hits, if because both those guys seem
to come up with big hits all the time, Imagine
if five of them, you're a second place team and
it keeps you out of the playoffs. And if five
of those, it's three of them were runs in scoring
position and won you two games, which is very real
when you're talking about guy sitting in the middle line up.

Speaker 4 (10:06):
Talking different about the Astros right now, If that's the case,
you're damn right.

Speaker 6 (10:09):
We are so well agreed on the big picture of
the individual statue like not that big a deal, but
when you apply it to how it applies to your team,
it could be a monster deal of when you got
those singles or doubles that drove in, you know, two
more runs, that got you two more wins. And boy
wouldn't the Astros love that right now? So I'd vote
cal Raleigh, as I said, And you know, in New

York Seattle more people watch Judge than Raleigh. It's just
like when Andrew Luck was playing quarterback, people didn't know
and he could have won the Heisman. You just sometimes
you don't stay up that late, most don't and you
win a Heisman and he you know, you just don't
see him. So people on the East Coast may not
see it as much. But I'd vote cal Raleigh. But
on the other side, I don't think you can complain
either way. The other guy can't say that guy didn't

deserve it, and none of us can. But man crouching
that much in the hitting sixty dude we expected with
the Yankees and Judge, you do, we just do. That's
Aaron Judge every year, right, And maybe that fatigueal helped
cal Raleigh. But you didn't expect that, especially what's been
the most he's hitting the season? Yeah, has he hit
Has he hit thirty five ever in a season?

I don't think so. I don't either.

Speaker 6 (11:15):
I think he's like more than doubled his highest production
in the season. I think, now I may be way off,
but I don't. I don't know if he's hit over
thirty in a season. I mean, he's still always quite
a home run hitter. Oh yeah, power, But I'm talking
about dude, that dude, you're talking about home run hitter
to go to double it up, that that's a whole
that feels like previous high was last year thirty four. Okay,
there you go one time. So that's it's and and

he's damn dear doubled it up. It's impressive. So I
think it makes for one one hell of a good
banter and debate. But both and you know what I
love about both of them. Neither one of them very
significant in what they're doing in the leadership and everything
they got to do. But neither one of them is
a self promoter. And I know some people would rather.

I love it. They just do their gig. Everybody else
talks about him, and neither one of them spent a
whole lot of talking about saying I or me. I'm
big on both of them. And look what one guy
does to elevate his team. Both are going to the playoffs,
and both ones won the division. The other, who we
come down to, stretches trying. Isn't a two horse race
to win the division in the East with the Yankees

in Toronto. So it's a good watch man.

It's funny you mentioned the Andrew Luck you know Heisman
time is because it reminds me when Christian McCaffrey was.
I think it was the year that Henry won it.
Derrick Henry and i'd written a story in my digital
media days of why Derick Henry's deserving and then one
guy sent me probably about a foot long length email

about Christian McCaffrey, to which I only responded, brother, I'm
not reading any of that right, Like, it's just like
I get.

What he did.

I but like, look at who Christian McCaffrey did all
of this against as opposed to Derrick Henry.

And if you remember that last part of day Derrick
Henry's season, Nick leaned on him saving I think he
had ninety carries in two games. Yeah, I think he
went like forty five and forty three back to back
before they got into the next level. I mean, you
talk about, hey man, you are you're loaded up, and
we need you to carry the ball almost one hundred

times the last two games to get us where we
want to go. And I'll be damned if Derrick Henry
didn't do it. And they leaned and leaned and leaned
and leaned and leaned on him, and it was phenomenal
that year. So as much I love McCaffrey, was the
most versatile player in America, but they threw a five

hundred pound weight on Derrick Henry and said carry this
load to the tune of about eighty eight or ninety
carries whatever it was at the end of the season.

Speaker 5 (13:46):
And it was for that reason too that people were like, well,
he could be another Trent Richardson, to which people who
knew were like, brother, he's twice the size of Trent Richardson,
and he can run like nobody's business, there's no doubt.

Speaker 6 (13:58):
And well to get to push forward, he's had, I mean,
people greatly overestimated the demise of his career. Did theyvid
Tennessee and look at him now, he just got to
quit laying the ball on the ground. That and Baltimore
is still a major threat. So all those things coming
to play in the Ryder Cup. Bryson Deshambeau, John Ram
hit just so people, the Ryder Cup has started.

I'm just gonna tell you, man, who would have thought
four weeks into the season that you are in a
must win situation against the team that you are supposed
to uh, that you're supposed to beat. And quite frankly,

might be, Dan that did whatever the word you use

I or phrase you use for this, I'm actually baffled.
And how poorly they've played offensively. It's a horrible watch.
And I'm telling you what that defense now every game
they give you a chance. I'm sitting here begging for
three touchdowns against Tennessee, and I know everybody's all. They're

gonna get right and they're gonna go Okay. So when
the for instance, when the Astros hang that and do
what they did to the A's yesterday, do we all
of a sudden automatically think, well, the Astros have arrived. No,
the answer is, man, where's this been? You're supposed to
beat the A's. They're out of it. But of course
young and dangerous because they free swing and they've taken
care of their business two of the three games that

put the Astros in a major bind. Right, But you
win once you get a little excited. But in truth,
we're just still sitting here saying, who are the Astros bats?

And what gain damage are they gonna do?

If they get into the postseason facing two front line
pitchers at the top, we'll see and they got a
couple of them themselves. So it's the same with the Texans. Man,
I gotta tell you, brother, I what do they do
well offensively? Namely a thing that they do well offensively?
Right now, throw it underneath? Okay, great? What average five

Okay, So tell me what they do that leaves you saying.
I'm not saying they can't, and I'm not saying they won't,

And that's something we're going to talk about too, because
I'm hearing Nick Kyley talk this morning and.

Nick Cayley's looked overwhelmed for three weeks. And I'm not
saying he's not smart none. It's not personal. Nick Cayley
looks like a guy who's real and looking for around,
looking for somebody to help him get through this. It's
because his play calling right now looks as if he's like, well,
let me just get a quick completion, yar. I don't
like he's trying to find like a rookie player. And

I get it, not that he's not dude, the guy
w's been around football. He knows x's and o's. But
as I've told and I've stressed a million times, play
calling is different than understanding x's and o's, far different.

It always is.

Speaker 6 (21:54):
You can be the greatest x's and o's guy, get
on the board in the classroom and tell your players,
here's what we're supposed to do. And then when they
hand you the play and you're putting it in to
get into a play sheet, rhythm is a whole different art,
and it is an art.

There's been a million x's.

Speaker 6 (22:08):
In those guys that just don't that aren't good at
calling plays and they go back to position coach and
their epic for years now.

Speaker 4 (22:15):
You got to find out who they are. And that
doesn't mean he can't be.

But three games in he looks like a rookie play
caller that's overwhelmed at times. And the problem is, when
you're a rookie play caller, you got to have a
team that is capable of overcoming your flaws or your
mistakes as a rookie play caller. Does that make sense?
And the problem is they don't. They've got a running
game that's reeling. They don't just dominate you. Offensive line

still trying to find its way, although anybody that just
blames the offensive line ain't watching the big play, run
after the catch, explosives, vertical push, CJ. Stroud's ability to
make plays that he's normally made. He is not playing
very well.

Speaker 4 (22:53):
Nico Collins fumbling in the red zone. That's exactly right.

Speaker 6 (22:56):
They're they're doing something all the time that either stalls,
drives or stalls. And well, we've been close. Yeah, you
know what, there's no category that says, see, it's wins
and losses and ties, and there's no other category that says, hey,
you know what, man, they got they got close.

No, they're maybe close in a couple of games, but
their offense is nowhere near When you watch Baltimore, Detroit, Buffalo,
the Rams, when you watch those offenses play, well, Sean
they've been yet well I didn't hire the rookie coordinator Arizona.
When you watch them play, there's a different attack. And
I'm just I mean, where's there's a trust? Do they

not trust CJ to CJ not trust the coordinator? Is
the receiving corps? Do we overrate them? I mean what
is going on? So listen, Defense isn't just close. Defense
has played well enough to win the majority of these games,
and they should be able to get after and hammer
Tennessee's ass.

Now, who are you going to be?

And even if they win this game, look at the
schedule for the Texans after they did ain't gonna be easy, brother,
and you and I both know it.

And we've already proven that.

Well, apparently Jacksonville and the Colts are pretty good in
this division. And we didn't mean acid Texans from last
week and the Colts finally punted three weeks in. And
Daniel Jones, you're your MVP category. So I just I
don't want to hear close. I want to see execution.
I just do. He's damn right, Driko is about his defense.
Oh but I'm gonna tell you, remember what I told

you about. There's that line of when a defense gets
to the point where like, are you guys gonna pull
your weight? You know what I'm talking about. I know
people tell you that doesn't happen, Oh what happens. I've

I always love when people say you backed in. You

So backing in is really it's an unfair statement because
