Speaker 1 (00:02):
Salisbury.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Okay, let's do this Sewn Salisbury to usc Troup's longtime
friend Shawn Salisbury, Dan Matthewscus. This is the Sean Salisbury show.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
Three two and Walker.

Speaker 4 (00:25):
Let's this down the right field line, slicing toward the
foul pole and it is gone.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Just stay fair.

Speaker 4 (00:34):
Christian Walker goes deep for the twentieth time this year.
Two nothing Astros his first pitch, and that's grounded through
the right side of base.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
It for carows.

Speaker 4 (00:44):
Smith charges it around third, coming home Freeman here comes
and throw of the plate on the hot the slide.
Freeman is out cam Smith with the outfield assist and
the game remains tie one two on the way swinging
and a miss fastball got it by him that time,
or it shouts into his mitt as he walks off

(01:05):
the mound. He strikes out a pair and leaves them loaded.
In the top of the seventh inning, first pitch here
and Walker drives this one pretty deep to left center.
It sends back back onto the warning track looking up
see e lighter off. The community later signed Christian Walker's
second home run of the game, and the Astros lead.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
It four to three.

Speaker 4 (01:27):
The one two to Beck slider drops in at the
knees for strike three, and that is the ballgame. The
Astros start their ten game homestand by taking two out
of three from the Rockies, beating Colorado today four to three.
Christian Walker two home runs, including what proved to be
the game winner in the bottom of the eighth.

Speaker 5 (01:48):
And what it proves is it doesn't matter how you
do it, it's just that you won. And that's what
the Astros are able to do yesterday over at dyk
In Parking. With that, we say we go in good
morning here on the Sean Salisbury Show. It stands the
namesake this morning, because well he's off. He'll be back

(02:08):
when we return to you on Tuesday. But Chris Gordy
in for Sean and Gordy, I mean, you know, we're
watching the game yesterday. The Astros get out to a
three to nothing lead. Little by little, the Rockies are
starting to kind of claw back into it and they
tie it up and you're getting a little anxious, I
guess with the Astros not getting hit. I think their

(02:29):
last one was like what since the fourth or fifth inning,
and then finally Christian Walker breaks through. But as I said,
a win's a win and you take it, move on.

Speaker 6 (02:39):
Yeah, no doubt. And how about this Dan? Since last
Thursday Christian Walker? This is last Thursday, So a week
from yesterday, Christian Walker is five home runs and basically
a little over a week he might be getting hot
at the right time. I mean, for all the gripe
and I had about him, and you know, the low
batting average and lack of run producing and all this

(03:01):
other stuff, he's he's kind of coming around and this
is what you wanted. And it's kind of funny all
the years mesh in on one another. Was it last year,
the year before? It must have been two years ago
with Jose Bray. You remember when it was just really bad.
But then like towards the end of the regular season
and then into the playoffs, Bray you hit a little
bit and it was like, oh okay, great, Like you

(03:23):
want to get hot now, you want to earn your money? Now,
I'll take that. So uh yeah it you know, you
got just enough. I mean, I'll two days home run
and then you know the two home runs from Alker,
but I mean the one in the.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Eighth was as clutch as he gets because yeah, you're.

Speaker 6 (03:38):
Sitting there going I mean, the Astros hadn't scored past
the sixth dan or the second, like it was third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
You're going like, can somebody score a run.

Speaker 6 (03:48):
Off Kyle Freeland or somebody somebody do something, and then
and the eighth walker comes in with the big home run,
you know, and an uncharacteristic, not dominant started from Jason Alexander.
I mean it was its five or two thirds three runs,
had the eight strikeouts, but you know, did enough kept
you in it. The bullpen did their job, and it

(04:09):
was it was an important win from a standpoint. I
get people that are gonna go some Rockies you should
have beat them. I get it, but this is baseball.
It's hard sometimes, and you take a win any way
you can get it.

Speaker 5 (04:20):
Well, it was the fourth inning was the last time
the Astros got a hit, so at least the way
that the game started, you were like, all right, maybe
this is gonna finally be the one that the Astros
are able to cruise to a win. But then they
quickly realized and Kyle Freeland quickly realized, no, it's not
gonna be the case. We're gonna make you guys sweat
this out and they did. Stros do make a couple
of errors in the game. One of those, of course,

(04:42):
I mean I threw it out at the time. On Twitter,
Gordy about Saysar Salosar's catcher's interference like that sends me
into a rage when that happens. Like your job is
to be able to know where you are behind the
plates and to be able to catch the baseball. I
just I don't understand how that happens.

Speaker 6 (05:03):
Well, I give him a little bit of a pass.
He just got back up here. But you know it's
he also had some hits. I mean, that's you take
that from him as well. I mean, if Salazar is
having to play with Diez and car Teeny being banged
up like they are, I'll take whatever he can give
you at the plate.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
And two hits from Salas are yesterday driving in a run, yep.

Speaker 5 (05:26):
So the Astro is able to hold on win this
one four to three. And I mean Jason Alexander, a
guy that I mentioned this yesterday with with Sean Gordy,
where I said, let's go back to June twenty second
or whenever it was that he made that start in
Sacramento against the A's and you know, send yourself back
in time and tell yourself, well, you know, not only

(05:48):
is he going to make starts like this one today
where he went six innings and gave up two earned runs,
He's going to be a guy that you're going to
heavily count on down the stretch. But the same time, though, Gordy,
you know it's into the sixth ending of his start,
five and two thirds, just a five and a third
the start before in Baltimore. I mean, is it kind
of borrowed time with with Jason Alexander, Like is there

(06:10):
a kind of a part of you that's like, well,
just wait for the other shoe to drop.

Speaker 6 (06:15):
No, Because it felt like he was pitching really well yesterday.
I mean, like I said, the swing and the miss stuff,
the strikeouts, even when he was getting into a little
bit of trouble, it felt like, you know, he was
he was doing his job of getting out of it. It
just you know, they were able to scratch across three
and uh, you know the Tovar homer, you know he
got him, but you still had the lead, and then

(06:35):
you know the home the Fernandez homer in the fifth
is what tied it up. But I thought he still
had pretty good stuff all day yesterday. Still just the
one walk. I mean, that's the key, keep it, keeping
that total down. So yeah, I'm I'm fine with it.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
Again.

Speaker 6 (06:49):
He gave you a chance. You know, it's not going
to be shut out or one run ball every time.
But you know, now I have a real opportunity here.
You you win a series that's back to back series
wins after you know, losing to the Orioles at home,
getting swept by the Tigers up in Detroit. You know,
we looked at the stretch, you like, coming back home

(07:11):
to play the Rockies and Angels. Yeah, let's let's win
a bunch of these now.

Speaker 5 (07:15):
And I mean that's kind of I think been the
frustration at Astros fans have had with this team at
times is that you haven't been able to take advantage
of these softer parts of the schedule. To be honest
with you, I mean, you weren't able to beat the
the A's when they came in town, and you weren't
able to beat you know, the Cleveland Guardians before that,

(07:39):
who they've been okay this season, And I mean I
get all the frustration of that. But at the same time, though, too,
I mean It is just about do you win these
games and are you able to hold off losing these series?
And at least, you know, the early part of this
month that was not the case with the Astros, But now,
I mean that's really what it kind of looks like,
where you got four games coming up with the Angels

(08:00):
this weekend. Is it too much to ask for three
out of four against a struggling ball club?

Speaker 6 (08:06):
I mean it might be, yeah, but yeah, you look
at what they've done and what they've lost five of
their last six. Now the Angels coming into this one,
don't look Now though, on the heels of this one,
you get the Yankees who have won five in a
row now and they're starting to play some good baseball.
So yeah, it's it's this is a stretch here against

(08:27):
this crappy Angels team. Yes, I would say i'd been them.
You want to split the four gamer with them?

Speaker 5 (08:32):
And I mean yesterday too, the bullpen able to come
in and help you out. They go scoreless all the
way through. Even though I mean, it looked like it
was going to be pretty hairy for Steven Oker when
he walks a couple of guys, but then Caleb bord
Able to come in and get a couple of huge
strikeouts for you. I understand he had the walk off
walk and we were pretty frustrated where the final pitch

(08:54):
right there? To Labor Torres, it's like, come on, man,
just throw a batting practice fastball down the middle and
just let whatever happens happens. Because I can deal with
you not being you know, the guy beating you on
a pitch, but when you don't even give him a chance,
then that's frustrating.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
But I mean he lives up to it yesterday.

Speaker 5 (09:12):
And did you notice the frustration when he came off
the mound, Like do you think it was kind of
do you think that there was a little bit of
come on, man, how are we getting a catcher's interference
right there? Like you just you just put us in
an even worse spot or I don't know, I mean
just kind of a little bit of emotions of getting
the strikeout and getting out of a huge spot.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (09:30):
I just again, I go back to this, this bullpen
has has is largely doing its job. How about Della
Santos again another you know, uh gets uh gets out
another scoreless outing for him. It's just yeah, that guy's
era was super high in Baltimore when he came over.
And you know, so far since he's put on an

(09:50):
Aster's uniform, what is it, one, two, three, four or
five seven appearances in any are of one twenty nine
an Aster's uniform. So shout out, uh Dellas Santos, he's
been He's been great. Uh Yeah, Ochred and Orton King
have all had their hiccups here and there. Uh you know,
overall though, I would say, you know, OKERD and Brian

(10:11):
Kings e R. Sub three have been outstanding. And look,
Briana pray you has been He's been fine. In that
say in that closer spot, he's he kind of falls
into the Ryan Prestleague trap of giving up a hit
every every ninth inning, but gives up a hit, no harm,
no foul and gets his fourth save in you know,

(10:32):
basically the last two weeks he's picked up for saves.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
So it's been nice to see ye.

Speaker 5 (10:36):
As I mentioned the Angels in town, it is the
very rare Friday to Monday four game series and then
as Gordy mentioned, three against the Yankees next week to
close out this home stand. I guess it's the longest
home stand. Uh that the Astros are going to have
the rest of the way this season, So if you're
looking to get out there, make sure that you take
advantage of these next seven games. Christian Hobbyer to night

(10:58):
against Tyler Anderson is going to be Spencer Aarraghetti against
Kyle Hendricks tomorrow, and then Hunter Brown against Jose Soriano
on Sunday, and then TBA on Monday against our old buddy,
Yuseka Kucci. Because there was the news yesterday at Lance
mccullor's junior gonna be available out of the pen. Although
Joe Aspota calling the decision to do that short term, yeah.

Speaker 1 (11:22):
I mean, say whatever you want.

Speaker 6 (11:23):
I mean that maybe he's got to say that the
quell mccullor's you know, frustration or anger out of it.
But yeah, sorry, dude, I mean it's we got to
put guys out there we can trust right now.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
And yeah, it's and again, it's a good problem to have.

Speaker 6 (11:38):
If you can get into the postseason and you have
a Lance McCullers and Lauist Garcia coming out of the bullpen,
that's a that's a good problem.

Speaker 3 (11:44):
To have, definitely.

Speaker 5 (11:45):
So so the Astros again a couple of wins here
to close out this series. They're now seventy four and
sixty on the season, two games up on the Mariners
in the West. So the Astros hoping that they can
be able to continue to add to that lead this
season and be able to close out this thing and
win the division for another year. I've got a lot

(12:09):
here on the show today to college football getting going,
of course, when I got a college football just you know,
people throw out the words expert all the time, Gordy,
and you know, I guess I listened too much Joe Rogan.
What's an expert? But definitely would say that you fit
into that category. So we'll definitely get into that a
little bit with you this morning as we're gonna have

(12:30):
our good buddy Will Matthews on from the Texas Longhorn
Radio Network as he does sidelines for Craig Way and
Roger Wallace on the radio broadcast, and he's going to
join us for a few minutes here in about an
hour and fifteen minutes, and then how about this, since
we have Lsu here on the station, a good buddy
Matt Moscona, He's gonna hop on with us at nine
point thirty. So looking forward to being able to talk

(12:53):
some college football with those guys. But coming up next,
Gordy touched on just a little bit the key for
the Astros. It's as simple as can see, and it's
going to be something that maybe you need a little
bit more out of this group. We'll talk about it
here as we're just getting going on a fight song
Friday edition of The Sean Salisbury Show. First Friday of

(13:15):
college football. Oh man, so excited. We'll talk about it
all right here, Shawn Salisbury Show, Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 7 (13:21):
I am a dip guy, you say, Sean will kind dip. Well,
I can tell you what kind of dip. Daisy French
onion dip and the daisy ranch dip. Now I am.
I'm like the finger food appetizer chips, you know, throw
a fredo in their chips to get the dips. Sometimes
to the point, on college game day or during Saturdays
and studies get up put the spread, it always has

(13:43):
the daisy French onion dip or the daisy ranch tip.
Was in the local grocery store over the weekend picking
it up, and why because well, the other foods fine
and dandy later in the day, but in order to
get you through.

Speaker 3 (13:54):
And don't you do it on holidays too. You do
it on Labor Day, you do it on holidays.

Speaker 1 (13:57):
You do it.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
Sports and it's sports season.

Speaker 7 (13:59):
This is this is daisy French onion dip and ranch
dip time of year right and now it comes out
with this delicious French onion dip. As an obsession of mine.
They are delicious as homemade dip. You can add whatever
you want to be. You won't need to because they
got the real erbs and spices and the other ingredients
you'd find in your own kitchen.

Speaker 3 (14:17):
But they're doing it for you.

Speaker 7 (14:18):
Pop on into your local grocery store and find out
what I already know and have known. And I'm grateful
to be part of this where I get to well
spend my college football Saturday and Sundays or any other
day of the week doing what really is the strength
of a meal, my chips and dips, and it's daisy
French onion dip and daisy ranch dip.

Speaker 3 (14:39):
I can go to.

Speaker 7 (14:39):
Myfrigerator and take a picture. You'll see it now, visualize it,
and then go out and do it. Get to your
local grocery store and look for daisy French onion dip
at a grocery store near you.

Speaker 5 (14:51):
Oh, also check this out.

Speaker 8 (14:53):
I should have warned you if Sean only cares about
cold hard.

Speaker 2 (14:58):
Back to the Sean Salisbury Show on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 3 (15:15):
Uh, you know you are in the mood for it.

Speaker 5 (15:17):
On a fight song Friday Here on the Sean Salisbury
Show Sports Talk seven ninety, Dan Matthews here, Chris Gordy
in for Sean triple Emmanuel Elmore though still firing up
the good stuff.

Speaker 3 (15:30):
As the Astros beat.

Speaker 5 (15:32):
The Rockies yesterday afternoon over at dyke In Park four
to three. They take two out of three in the series.
They now have a two game lead on the Mariners
in the Aos with Seattle being off yesterday and the
Cowboys trade Micah Parsons to the Packers two first round
picks defensive tackle Kenny Clark coming back and return. Parsons
also signs a very lucrative extension with the Green Bay

(15:54):
Packers and Gordy. We'll get into that as the show
goes along today. But the fun thing is before we
get back into the Astros conversation, Jerry Jones's press conference afterwards.
I mean it was true, Jerry Jones style number one,
he calls him Michael, and then the other one is
I did appreciate somebody asking the question, well, you know,
what is this going to say to other players who

(16:16):
want to get a contract extension for you?

Speaker 3 (16:18):
And Jerry's answer was very simple, ask dak.

Speaker 1 (16:24):
Uh, Jerry looks old by the way that press conference.

Speaker 6 (16:27):
Gosh, he's like look starting to look like one of
the Golden girls.

Speaker 1 (16:30):
Like his his just skin is. I don't know, he's
just getting very very old.

Speaker 6 (16:34):
But and when he speaks he sounds old, but like
I kind of get it, like if you take a
step back, take all the emotion out, you know, it's look,
Michael Parsons is an awesome player. It's one of those
things where it's like, how you can get rid of
one of your best players in his prime. Well, you
take a step back and you go, Steve wasn't gonna

(16:56):
win anything anytime soon. Like they're not a they're not
a Super Bowl contender right now, and why bake him
one of the highest paid players in all of football
where it kind of handcuffs your salary cap wise, And
you know, so if you could flip him and flip them,
so I kind.

Speaker 3 (17:14):
Of like it well.

Speaker 5 (17:16):
And you know, the thing is that you were talking
about there about Jerry being very old, is I mean,
it doesn't matter how good plastic surgery is. Father Time
wins at all times. And Gordia said it numerous times.
You start doing things like we believe that Jerry has
done to the face, it's almost kind of like burning

(17:37):
a candle. The wax melts, like soon enough, it's like,
there ain't nothing more you can do. Man, Now, guess
what Father Time's going to come back with a vengeance?

Speaker 6 (17:48):
Yeah, I just it's to me. I kind of look
at it and go, maybe this was the right move.
Maybe maybe this was the right decision to say, you know,
let's get two first round picks and let's do something
with that, Let's find the next Parsons.

Speaker 1 (18:01):
It's it's a very interesting move.

Speaker 5 (18:03):
I had that theory yesterday too, because you know, the
Cowboys documentary just came out on Netflix, and I know
that people, you know, they have their feelings about it.
I actually thought that it was incredibly well done. But
in it, of course, they talk about the herschel Walker trade.

Speaker 3 (18:17):
Do you think that that had anything to do with this?

Speaker 5 (18:19):
I do, like, I really think because remember it was
the whole Oh, Jimmy Johnson took credit for it, and
Jerry's like, no, no, no, no, that was my trade.
Like I did that trade, and I set ourselves up
to win the Super Bowls. So I almost kind of
wonder if Jerry, maybe behind the scenes, is gonna say, hey,
it worked out well with herschel I think we can
do it again here.

Speaker 1 (18:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (18:40):
I mean people people have been referencing that it's a
big Tweety said, well, Jerry must have watched the Netflix
documentary and thought, hey, that that herschel Walker trade worked out.
Let's let's try to do that again. So I don't know,
it's again. It just seems it seems maddening. It seems crazy.
It also seems like this, what if the Texans take

(19:01):
a major step back this year, Dan and like they're
six or seven win team CJ. Stroud's just okay, and
we start to go, man, what is this is really
what Stroud is? He's just kind of okay. But you
have Will Anderson bawling out, and Will Anderson makes it
know him publicly, Hey, I want a long term deal
done with the time, you know what I mean, Like
I'm trying to make a parallel here. But even I

(19:23):
think even in that situation, the Texans are still gonna
pay well Anderson Jr. But trying to find a parallel
here where like one of your players wants to be
like you're stuck in mediocrity and one of your best
players wants to be the highest.

Speaker 1 (19:34):
Paid player in the league.

Speaker 6 (19:35):
Like, it just gets to a certain point where you go,
this isn't a smart business decision.

Speaker 5 (19:40):
Well, I mean, I you know, I understand where you
don't want to be too reckless with your spending, But
I mean, I had this conversation with someone the other
day and they seem to be convinced that CJ would
do everything he could to get to LA if Matt
Stafford moved on. And I told him, I said, you're
having an argument with your That's just not even true

(20:01):
because they're going to sign him to an extension next year.
That's going to happen, and we'll do something about Willy
Anderson Junior a little bit later. Because with the move yesterday,
I'm sure some people here were like, oh, well, what's
that going to mean for Willy Anderson Junior. I don't
think he compares to Micah Parsons, but I do think
he compares to a couple of other guys, and we'll
discuss that. But the Astros to mention able to win
yesterday four to three over the Rockies, and the bats

(20:24):
at the beginning were great, but then they cooled off
mightily from the fourth inning on, because I mean you
mentioned it. They get three of their four runs in
the first couple of innings of the game, and then
from about the fifth inning on until the eighth they
were able to do nothing able other than like a
walk here or there. But I mean, this is something Gordy,

(20:45):
that me and Sean have continued to harp on when
you've been in here with us on Tuesday and Thursdays.
We've harped on it with you that with the pitching
injuries and really even without Josh Hader and Bennett Susa
and some of the other guys that you've had taken
away by injury this year, you've still been able to
get good pitching. But I mean, isn't it kind of
to the point though, where one hundred and twenty eight

(21:06):
games or one hundred and you know something games in
but twenty eight games left to go. That's what I'm
meant to say that twenty eight games left to go,
it's kind of a all right, we keep hearing about
this offense is going to break out. Where's the prolonged breakout?
Like when is that gonna happen?

Speaker 6 (21:22):
Yeah, I want to see, like this is where And
I've said this before, like this this thing was in
twofold one. You wanted to get back healthy. That was
the biggest priority. So much of the season was getting
everybody back healthy. Okay, you're you're almost fully healthy. When
when Jake Myers gets back here soon you will be
fully healthy. You get got almost all your you know

(21:43):
you're injured arms back and then it's about getting right.
So get healthy and get right. And you're in the
process right now trying to get right. And that's where
Christian Javier tonight is. It's an important start for him.
It's an important start because you know, the first outing
back against Boston, five innings, a two run ball, you
want to Okay, that's really good. But then the next

(22:05):
outing three innings of one run ball against Baltimore leaves
with the illness.

Speaker 1 (22:08):
You're like, okay, well I don't know what happened there.

Speaker 6 (22:11):
And then last time against Baltimore two runs or two innings,
five runs, three of them earned.

Speaker 1 (22:18):
But I mean that's not going to get it done.

Speaker 6 (22:20):
So Javier's got like he's got to come out tonight
and dude, get me five, five innings, a two run ball,
give me a bounce back of what you gave me
first time back when you came back to the Mountain
a couple of weeks ago.

Speaker 1 (22:33):
That's what we need.

Speaker 3 (22:34):
Tonight well and especially too.

Speaker 5 (22:36):
I mean you mentioned with Javier last time out, not
good whatsoever. I mean, you know, even though you got
out to an early five nothing lead, I mean, he
almost lost the game for you with how ineffective he
was to not only find the strike zone, but when
he did, he was getting hit and hard. So yeah,
you would like to have a bounce back out of him.
And I mean, I guess the good news that you've had,
especially the last couple of games, is you haven't had

(22:59):
to go deep into your bullpen. But it would be
nice to be able to continue doing that, especially with
you know how much this bullpen has been used this year.
And when you look at kind of that pocket right
there of Hoavier and Spencer Arraghetti, it's kind of if
you're out there in the bullpen, like, well, we better
be ready pretty early because we don't know when these
guys are going to kind of fall off.

Speaker 1 (23:20):
Well, and it's all about it's all about the run
support too.

Speaker 6 (23:24):
I mean, that's that's the The good thing was Javey
are as bad as he was in an outing, it
was a game you still won nine to eight, and
aj Blueball was a big part of that, eating up
eating up those mental innings. But you know, I could
I could foresee a thing tonight, Dan where you're not
able to score barely anything on Tyler Anderson, and you

(23:45):
know it's Javier gives up three runs and you're down
three nothing, and then mcculors comes in to eat up
some innings or whoever, and you know, and it's suddenly
you're down five nothing and you go on to lose
five nothing because you put up no fight at the plate.
Like those are the games that frustrate me the most
because it's like, you look at Tyler Anderson, this guy
who's got a six sixty three ERA in the month

(24:06):
of August. This is a guy you should be teeing
off off. He had three straight starts where he gave
it four earned go score four tonight.

Speaker 1 (24:13):
I mean that's that's that's damo.

Speaker 3 (24:15):
See you had to do it.

Speaker 5 (24:17):
You had to fire up this dain Dan, because that
was me yesterday to a tea watching first pitch swings,
lazy flyouts, ground balls to shortstop our third base. I mean, seriously, like,
what was it the double play from Jeremy Pania? I said,
bang another damn ball into the dirt? Why don't you
guys continue to do that? Like it's just seriously watching

(24:39):
this lineup sometimes I'm like, an approach?

Speaker 3 (24:41):
Do you have any semblance of one? Seriously?

Speaker 5 (24:44):
Like I want to ask you guys that do you
have any semblance of an approach at the plate, because
whatever you think you have, it's not working, and it
hasn't worked for over about one hundred and thirty games.

Speaker 6 (24:56):
Yeah, it's funny when you get too bad on and
I'm like, I'm on seven to ninety kind, I'm about
the tweet out, all right, astros in business here two
runners on one out paying you up and no sooner
can I get the tweet out? And then it's a
ground in a double play any over? Like, well, all
right there we go.

Speaker 5 (25:12):
Yeah, the ultimate just wait, I guess when it comes
to the astros. But you want to weigh in with
us this morning in the number seven one three two
one two five seven ninety. Again at Sebon one three
two one two five seven nine zero, Billy, see you
right there.

Speaker 3 (25:26):
You want to join, Billy.

Speaker 5 (25:27):
We had a couple of billies, I think even one
guy that was coming in from California, so you know California. Billy,
if you're out there, please give us a shout. But
anybody else who wants to jump in talk some stros,
you can do that again at someone three two one
two five seven ninety. You mentioned about Lance mccullors junior
and what that says about his move. We'll discuss that

(25:48):
as we continue here on the Sean Salisbury Show Sports
Talk seven ninety. But first, I've been saying it's college
football season is here. We're excited ready to go. I
mean over the third ward last night they played a
college football game. And there's a website that's got amazing
red and white polos that you can order for pre order,

(26:10):
and soon they're gonna start going out for delivery. When
you head over to Kobe Stevens dot com. That's Kobe
Stevens Apparel Kobe Stevens dot Com. And I'm actually gonna
be out there on the golf course today playing golf,
and you know, one of the golf shirts that I
have ready to go to sport when I'm out there
playing golf today with the family, it's a Kobe Stevens
Apparel polo and I'm looking forward to showing that off.

(26:31):
And then people out there at the golf course saying, hey,
where'd you get that shirt? I say, Kobe Stevens dot com.
It's polos, it's T shirts, it's hats, it's shorts, Ladies
and youth options available as well. And back to those
college football polos. I mean, you've got the team that
wears purple and gold. They're gonna be on the field
tomorrow night for one of the biggest games of the
college football weekend, and you've got a purple and goalpolo

(26:53):
up there on Kobe Stevens dot Com. You've got the
maroon and white ones, and you know, maybe not for
the UTSA, but for maybe any of the other games
this season you're heading over to Kyle Field, Well you
can support that. What about the burn orange and white
one they're on the road this weekend, but they'll be
back home in Austin soon. Kobe Stevens dot Com to
be able to check that out. It's Kobe Stephens dot Com,

(27:14):
Kobe Stephens dot Com co O b Y Stevens with
a VS at the end Kobe Stevens dot Com.

Speaker 2 (27:22):
The Sewn Salisbury Show continued.

Speaker 5 (27:42):
Sean Salisbury Show on a fight Song Friday.

Speaker 3 (27:46):
In the first.

Speaker 5 (27:48):
Segment of a Fight Song Friday, it was Boise States
fight song. Not a good night for them FORRDY, but
this one a little bit closer to where dude, not
good at all and do you even have any idea?

Speaker 1 (28:01):
Do what?

Speaker 2 (28:03):
Do?

Speaker 1 (28:03):
Not that orn? That's awful?

Speaker 3 (28:07):
You know who this one is?

Speaker 1 (28:09):
No, that's what I'm talking about. Whatever band that is.

Speaker 5 (28:11):
Yeah, it was, uh, the Raging Cagens of formerly of
USL now University of.

Speaker 1 (28:19):
Louisiana UL Louisiana. Get out of here.

Speaker 5 (28:23):
It's like, no, there's there's one state university and it's
in Baton Rouge and they go by Louisiana State University,
not to University of Like what is that all about?
Is that like just kind of a hey, we're over
here thing, because it does seem like, okay, so that's
what it is, because like I've always kind of been
fascinated by that of people. No, no, no, no, I'm a raging

(28:45):
Cajuns fan. I'm not an LSU fan, And I'm like why,
Like I don't really understand that. It's kind of like
when I was living in Georgia. I understand, you know,
Georgia and Georgia Tech because they're two major state universities.
But like for people who went to I don't know,
Georgia State or Georgia Southern, and they're like, no, no, no,
I'm a It's like, no, you're a Southern Fian because

(29:08):
you didn't get into UGA.

Speaker 3 (29:09):
That's that's what it is.

Speaker 1 (29:10):
Just be honest with us.

Speaker 6 (29:12):
Yeah, it would be like saying, I don't know, like
I'm just trying to think of school instead, like if
you go to SMU, you're like, no way held over
for the aggies I got.

Speaker 1 (29:20):
I went to SMU, Like what who cares? Like why? Well,
two completely different things.

Speaker 5 (29:25):
Well, now all of a sudden, SMU is starting to
somewhat win some guessing that probably makes people a little
bit more prideful in their school. Billy and Steve get
to you guys, just a second. But the Stros beat
the Rockies yesterday four to three, Christian Walker a couple
of homers, including the game winner there in the eighth inning.
They're now two games on the Mariners in the Al

(29:45):
West with seattleby and off yesterday. College football getting going
this weekend. You of h starting at last night over
against SFA and a twenty seven to nothing win. And
you know, Gordy offense a little inconsistent, But I think
a couple couple of things watching that game last night
on TV, or good Buddy Taylor mccarr on the call
of the former Rice quarterback doing a great job on

(30:07):
the TV side. But number one, I mentioned it to
somebody I was watching the game with. I said, U,
h just looks like a power for a team now,
Like they looked like they were in shape. They have size,
they have athleticism, all of those things. And the other
thing is is last year really good on defense and
that continues this year. And I understand people are gonna
say they're playing SFA, all right, that's fine.

Speaker 3 (30:29):
You still held them to no points.

Speaker 6 (30:32):
Right, No, that's that's the thing. It's hard to shut
anybody out. So you know, again when you do it,
you celebrate it. Some offensive line concerns, gotta gotta fix
that up, but a nice debut overall.

Speaker 1 (30:44):
For Connor Wegman.

Speaker 6 (30:45):
I felt with the three touchdown passes, you'll take that,
and man, if he could stay healthy. You know, this
has been the mo of of Connor Wegman's career. But
if he could stay healthy, I mean you, it's gonna
have a chance to make some noise. I think, And yeah,
I've been saying all year. I think six and six
should be the goal or the floor, like, let's get
to a bowl game. I know it's a tough Big

(31:06):
twelve schedule, but good start to the season for that.
Maybe I even saw people, you know, complaining, Oh, you
should have been it's it's f it's sfa. You should
have blown him out by fifty. I'm like, baby steps here,
it's it's a season opener.

Speaker 5 (31:21):
Yeah, we'll get to the Lance mccaller's junior stuff here
in a second, But continuing the Astros conversation, I know
a lot of you want to weigh in on that.
Seven one three, two, one two five, seven ninety is
the number to get in. Let's get it going this morning,
Billy wants to weigh in. Billy good morning, Hey, good morning.

Speaker 1 (31:36):
Uh yeah, yeah.

Speaker 9 (31:37):
And Lance mccallers is one of the guys I'd like
talk about, uh him and Javier. I'm excited about getting
Loose Garcia back because to me, Garcia is a pitcher.
I've never seen it Javier as a pitcher more of
a thrower. Uh always had good sub He's got two pitches,
and never really understood how they can expect a guy
to go five six innings with just two pitches. Yeah,

(32:00):
he's got a little bit of a of a wrinkle
in there with a changeup, but it's like, that's not
gonna get to you there. And I never understood why
they didn't like groom him for the back of the bullpen,
because yeah, he only throws ninety ninety one, but it
looks like ninety five for some reason. He's got the sneaky,
sneaky velocity. But the pitching seeds to are going great.

Speaker 2 (32:22):
The hitting.

Speaker 9 (32:24):
I would love for somebody to explain this to me
how a team that is this talented, the only the
only guy that has ever not bought into the swing
hard swing early theory that this team seems to have
with Farrady's and well, we know where he is.

Speaker 10 (32:37):
But then you saw this.

Speaker 9 (32:39):
I think you might even said something about it on Twitter.
Third and fourth innings freely got through that with seventeen pitches,
and you can't get you can't go deep, and you
can't let a starter go that deep on you when
he's just not. The reason he's not getting deep on
his pitch count is because you're swinging hard, winging early,

(33:00):
and not taking pitches. And we saw that with pain
you grunted a double play. I think it's going to
turn around, though, I am. I do really believe that
the offense is going to turn around. I'm going to
go back to twenty nineteen. I know it's a painful comparison,
but the Washington Nationals didn't get hot until late. They
won their last eight games. Everything seemed to turn around
very late in the season, and I think this Astros
team is going to do the same thing.

Speaker 3 (33:22):
I appreciate the call Billy Braves too.

Speaker 1 (33:24):
I mean, you were covering that Braves team, Dan.

Speaker 6 (33:27):
I mean, it's like you get hot at the right
time in the backstretch of the season into the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (33:31):
That's all it matters.

Speaker 5 (33:32):
Well and That's the thing too, is what people might
not remember about that Braves team is it took him
until August to even get above five hundred. I mean
the entire season. They started out kind of a little
bit like the Astros did last year, and then they
would get right up to that line of all right, hey,
you win this game, you're right at five hundred. Then
they lose four or five in a row, and then
you even lost Roald Akunyu Junior at that point, and

(33:53):
you're just kind of like, all right.

Speaker 3 (33:54):
This thing's done.

Speaker 5 (33:55):
Alexanthopolis made a few just kind of ancillary small moves.
But then the funny thing is those ancillary small moves
he made paid off Jock Peterson, he factored, Adam Duvall,
he factored Eddie Rosario, he factored I mean, I think
us around here we remember exactly how those guys played
against the Astros in the World Series. But no, I mean, Gordy,
that's kind of the whole point that Billy was bringing

(34:17):
up right there. And I've said from the beginning, you
play your best baseball in August and September, that usually
bodes well for you in the postseason. I mean, do
we need a better example than last year against the
Detroit Tigers. The Astros got in and they kind of
had to battle their way to get in, whereas Detroit
after the trade deadline and they sent Jack Flaherty away.
They were one of the hottest teams in baseball.

Speaker 1 (34:39):
Yeah, and now you look at this team.

Speaker 6 (34:41):
And to his point, I mean the mccullors thing, was
he saying, why didn't they move him to the bullpen sooner?

Speaker 1 (34:47):
Well?

Speaker 5 (34:47):
That and then I mean, Billy I got to push
back to on the Christian Javier thing, like when you
throw a couple of combined no hitters, I think you're
a pitcher.

Speaker 6 (34:57):
Yeah, Christianavier still starter to me. The mccullors thing, you know,
why did it take a long to this long to
move him to the bullpen. It's just because he's making
sixteen million a year and Lance is pretty hard headed.
I mean Lances, it's he in his mind thinks he's
still a starter. And that's a tough conversation to have.
I'm sure I would not have wanted to have been

(35:18):
in the room when Joey Spotty called him in the
office yesterday and said, Hey, we're moving you to the
bullpen because and that's probably again probably why they say
this is only temporary guy, it's only temporary, when they
probably know in the back of their minds he ain't
moved back to the rotation unless we have more injuries.
But you know, if you missed it was that Tuesday Wednesday,
Luis Garcia went six innings Tuesday, the longest outing since

(35:40):
April twenty twenty three when he was with the Astros.
So you know, they Dana kept saying this stuff about
the velocity, velocity, velocity. I'm going Alwis Garcia keeps putting
up good at good outings. I get it's triple A,
but like, at what point are they going to bring
him back up?

Speaker 1 (35:55):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (35:55):
I think that's probably going to be coming up here
pretty soon. I mean, you know what, I'll go ahead
and when his start? When was his last one?

Speaker 1 (36:02):
I think it was Tuesday?

Speaker 3 (36:04):
Okay, so Tuesday, TBA on Sunday. What do you think
that means?

Speaker 1 (36:07):
Think he's the Monday guy, either.

Speaker 5 (36:09):
Sunday or Monday. Oh, that's right, TBA on Monday. That's
right because it's a it's a Friday to Monday four
game series. Yeah, he's the Monday guy. That's one hundred
percent what it is you'll be You'll be seeing Luis
Garcia starting on Monday.

Speaker 1 (36:22):
That would be awesome.

Speaker 6 (36:23):
I'd love to see that a Labor Day afternoon game
at the ballpark. What better fun time with the family
out of the ballpark than to go see Luis Garcia
back on the mount rocking the baby.

Speaker 5 (36:34):
Well, and you mentioned about Lance McCullers junior and probably
the conversation that was had. That's a good segue by you,
so we'll continue that. Steve will get you into the
conversation too. You want to join Scooba Steve right there
seven one three two one two five seven ninety against
someone three two one two five seven ninety. As we
continue to roll along here Sean Salisbury Show on a

(36:55):
fight song Friday, Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (36:59):
Salisbury Show continues to.

Speaker 11 (37:02):
Continue, Oh when you hear, when.

Speaker 5 (37:21):
You hear the bands throwing up the horns, the drums,
everything you know, that college football season is here, Gordy,
It is the game Cocks of Jacksonville State.

Speaker 3 (37:36):
Triple A is Solomon.

Speaker 5 (37:37):
See, that's the thing is triple He doesn't just go
with like the simple ones, you know, Texas fights. Maybe
even Aggie Warham anything like that that we know well
around here, maybe even I don't know, Notre Dames fights
on Michigan's anybody like that.

Speaker 3 (37:50):
He goes with the deep cuts.

Speaker 1 (37:53):
Well.

Speaker 6 (37:54):
I end up watching them a little bit last night
because they were in a dogfight with UCF Central Florida,
who's been you know, Scott Frost like they've been a
you know, a nice little, uh you know, group of
five program in the last few years.

Speaker 1 (38:07):
But they were struggling with Jacksonville State.

Speaker 6 (38:10):
So I'm a little bit of a not I was
watching all the all the games going on last night.
I watched Miszoo, I watched of course, then I stayed
up for the Nebraska game. That was Cincinnati was was
giving them everything they could handle. Taylor Swift was in
the building, Travis Kelsey, so.

Speaker 1 (38:26):
Yeah, I was. I was.

Speaker 6 (38:27):
I'm glad the Askers had the day game because I
was just unleash and watch all the college football last night.

Speaker 5 (38:32):
No, that's a great point by you, because I mean
you're able to get that that gets out of the way,
and then you see you know, uh, South Florida against Boise, which, man,
what a fall off for Boise from going to the
college off last year and then Alice Golish his team
over there at South Florida just saying, hey, we got
something for you here.

Speaker 1 (38:51):
Eat this, hey, and just the heads up.

Speaker 6 (38:54):
Next week they go to Florida to play DJ Lagway.
Well he was native, and that's that suddenly becomes an
interesting one because they didn't just beat Poise, they blew
out Boise, a top twenty five teams.

Speaker 1 (39:06):
So USF that's not going to be an easy out.

Speaker 5 (39:09):
Yeah, college football, as we mentioned, U of H win
last night twenty seven to nothing at TDECU Stadium over
South excuse me, Stephen f F Auston. And then the first
Saturday Week one of the season coming up tomorrow, Texas
Longhorns in Columbus taking on Ohio State. That coverage is
going to get started here on Sports Talk steven ninety
at ten am, and then Clemson and LSU tomorrow night

(39:33):
five thirty. You can hear that over on KPRC nine
fifty speaking of the Longhorns, the sideline reporter for Craig
Way and Roger Wallace there on the radio side. Former
Texas lineman Will Matthews going to join us here in
about thirty minutes to talk some horns and preview that
matchup tomorrow and just preview the season real quick. Here, Gordy,
you'd mentioned about Lance mcculler's junior. By the way, the

(39:55):
Astros when you say four to three over the Rockies
and win that series, but going to the I mean,
I almost kind of feel like and this has been
something for years.

Speaker 3 (40:04):
I know that.

Speaker 5 (40:04):
The first time I ever brought it up, I was
co hosting with Matt Thomas, and Matt said, oh, don't
say that to Lance.

Speaker 3 (40:10):
He gets angry when you bring that up.

Speaker 5 (40:11):
And then of course this year it's spring training, it's
brought up and he turns it on. Well, you guys
are insulting the bullpen by saying it's just so easy
for me to go out there. But I don't know.
Let me lay out a scenario here for you. Let's
say that the Astros get into the postseason this year
because they win the division, and they get deep enough
into the postseason where Joe Davis and John Smoltz are

(40:32):
on the call, maybe somebody, just somebody conveniently lines up
a meeting between Smoltz and Lance mccullors junior, and Smoltz says, hey,
you know, man, it kind of prolonged my career going
out to the bullpen because how many starts has he
made this year? What nine to ten maybe? And he's
already been on the IL a couple of times, Gordy.

(40:54):
Soon enough, he's got to make that realization to himself.
Maybe starter is just not for him.

Speaker 12 (40:59):
His body's not made to take it, and bullpen, if
he wants to continue pitching at this level, is probably
going to be where he needs to go at least
here to kind of build himself back up.

Speaker 6 (41:11):
Yeah, he's made twelve he' sai had twelve outings this year.
I think they've all been starts. Yeah, it look he's
making seventeen point seven million this year and next year.
I mean, that's that's the tough part. And then you know,
there's the July fourth game. I always go back to
on you know, fourth of July out at Dodger Stadium,
and I remember that was coming off of the eight

(41:32):
runs he gave up against the Cubs at dyk In
and we're like, God, okay, this is gonna be ugly
against this Dodgers lineup with show A and all these pieces,
and Lance went out there and dominated.

Speaker 1 (41:43):
Now the Bats got his back. They won eighteen to one.

Speaker 6 (41:46):
But Lance went six innings of one run ball and
had four strikeouts, and it was vintage Lance mccollors. And
so that's what's frustrating about this is that guy's somewhere
deep down in there. I mean a few weeks before
that when he went to shutout innings against the Pirates
out in Pittsburgh. So like, if that guy could just
come out and be you know, and show his face

(42:08):
more often, he'd be rock solid. He'd be you know,
locked into this rotation.

Speaker 3 (42:13):
See.

Speaker 5 (42:14):
But that's the frustration though, Gordy that I think people,
in addition to the injuries have with him, is his
inconsistency where he has a start like that and you're like,
all right, I know that guy is there. It just
would be nice for you to kind of tap into
that a little bit more, because for every single one
of those, then there's the red start, the Rangers start,
the Cubs start that we've seen this year out of him,

(42:36):
where it's like, all right, you're walking a bunch of guys,
you're hitting guys, and then kind of like I talked
about the last start for Christian Hobvier, if you do
throw it in the zone.

Speaker 3 (42:44):
It's getting pummeled.

Speaker 1 (42:46):
Yeah, and again I go back. It's a big start
from Hove or tonight. Arragetty.

Speaker 6 (42:53):
You want to see him, you know, build off of
his last start. He's gonna go tomorrow. Hunter Brown, you
want to see bounce back from his It's just like
I keep it feels like we're saying this about everybody,
but you just want to find some consistency here. You
know Fromber was very nice the other night. Good to
see him back in the form. But yeah, I don't know.

(43:13):
This McCullers thing is going to be interesting.

Speaker 5 (43:15):
Steve and John, see you guys right there are working
into the conversation here as we get into the seven
o'clock hour. You want to join him seb one three
two one two five seven ninety against seven one three
two one two five seven ninety As we continue here
Sean Salisbury Show, Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 7 (43:29):
All right, guys, let's discuss doctor Jeff Witzitt in Vision. Okay, Uh,
he's been nothing but spectacular for me. I always say
when I want to know it. First off, how in
the world would somebody who's never used the lasik or
never been to the eye doctor for something important. How
in the world would would they be able to speak

(43:49):
on somebody? Talk to the people.

Speaker 3 (43:51):
Who've used it.

Speaker 7 (43:52):
Doctor Witz has been with me every step of the
way for the last seven or eight years. Every step
he's been phenomenal. So talk to and friends I've sent
him same way. Talk to those people, not the one
who Well, I'm thinking about getting it done. But here,
let me tell you about this company. How about talking
about somebody who's been there, done it. I'm seeing better
than I've seen the last thirty years, and if there's
anything that needs adjusted, he's doing it. You have the

(44:13):
best doctor right here. You don't have to travel out
of state to go get the Lasik procedure. Guy that
you want to get it done right in eye care doctor.
He's phenomenal. He'll walk you through it, take away your
anxiety stress because there always is when you're talking about
your eyes.

Speaker 3 (44:25):
But with the greatest equipment, with his great.

Speaker 7 (44:27):
Eye and hands to make sure that you get treated
the way he'd treat his own kid's eyes. Isn't that
a nice nice bonus we get? And then the recovery's quick.
You're not on the table long, and it's not invasive,
all those things, plus you can work out your payment plan.
Get it done right with doctor Jeff wize It because
your eyes are important, as you well know, and he's

(44:47):
going to make sure you understand just how comfortable you
can be. And that's a good thing. He's the best
in the business, and I'm grateful. I am a patient.

Good morning. How are you doing today?

Speaker 3 (46:21):
Very well man, Hopefully you have a great weekend.

Speaker 14 (46:25):
Absolutely. I have two comments about base running in the
Astros really maybe all across baseball. I love seeing Dubond
after he hits the ball, he is hit and run,
not hit luke and run. That guy hustles the first
base like his life depends on it. When you do this,
put pressure on the infielders to rush the ball or

(46:47):
rush the throw and possibly have an error. And he
has gotten some hits, very very good. I gotten on
base hits because of his hustle. And I see a
lot of these guys get up there, they hit it
in field and they run sixty feet and then they
just kind of give up because they figure out I'm
going to be put out. And then the second thing is, uh,

(47:11):
when somebody gets on first base. I consider it to
be almost inexcusable to not steal second base because you're
leaving yourself open to a double play. You know, Actually,
someone like Maldonado, I don't think I put him ask
him to steal second base, but at least someone who
has has some happy feet tell them to do that,

(47:33):
because it puts pressure on the picture as well as
a catcher.

Speaker 5 (47:36):
Wait, did you.

Speaker 14 (47:40):
Well that Maldonado from a couple of eight years ago
who went out?

Speaker 3 (47:43):
Okay, okay, I was going to say, I was. He
hadn't been here in two years.

Speaker 15 (47:48):
I know that, but he was. He was a classic
case of run fifty run, run forty or fifty feet
and give up you. I watched, I watched the poor guy.
I felt so sorry. Before we get an infield hit
and he'd hustle for about fifty feet and he shut
it down. And the Vaughan he does not give up.

Speaker 5 (48:11):
Man.

Speaker 14 (48:11):
He he hits that ball and he takes off like
a dark and he doesn't look. He just gets that
head down and hustles the first base. Every time they
put them off, they're gonna have to get to that
ball fast, and they're gonna have to throw it, well.

Speaker 3 (48:29):
No, I got you that.

Speaker 14 (48:32):
Yeah, and then said Steely's second base. I mean, if
they're on first base, if they've got half decent feet,
they ought to be on second base because otherwise they're
leaving themselves open to.

Speaker 3 (48:45):
A double play. Yeah. No, I appreciate.

Speaker 14 (48:47):
That's that's all I have to say.

Speaker 3 (48:49):
Gotcha appreciate, Steve.

Speaker 5 (48:50):
I mean, the Astros this year, Gordy, have stolen sixty
six bases as a team. That's believe, twenty fourth in baseball.
They've all been thrown out twenty four times trying to
take second base. And I get what he's saying about
the hustle part of it. I mean, you know, you
saw Jeremy Paania I think he stayed out of a
double play or can't remember who it was yesterday that

(49:11):
stayed out of a double play by hustling down the line.
That's nice to see, but this answer is also not
going to make people any happier. A lot of times
these guys are told, if it looks like it's going
to be a routine ground ball, do not expense the energy, like,
just just jog it out, because you're trying to be
able to preserve yourself for the rest of the season.

Speaker 3 (49:32):
So a lot of times that's what's gonna like.

Speaker 1 (49:34):
Don't risk a don't risk a hamstring injury.

Speaker 2 (49:36):
No.

Speaker 6 (49:37):
I mean, look, Paanya and Altuv, I mean they're both
they're consistent with running as fast as you can in
the first base. I get what he's saying about the bond,
but the thing is the bond that's the only way
he's going to get a hit.

Speaker 1 (49:49):
I mean, is running out.

Speaker 6 (49:51):
Of ground ball to short that turns into an infield single.
I mean, he's batten two zero three this month. He
is on a four game hit streak, give him that.
But yeah, Dubon is not I mean he's he's just not.
He's not very great with the bat. To this point
about with the with the stealing base, I mean, if
it were that easy, dude, like, yeah, let's just get

(50:14):
a guy on first, let's just steal second every time. Sure,
but it's not that easy. Now again, you want to
make a case for a hit and run, Sure, and
they do do that a lot of times. You know,
two strikes, they'll put the hit and run on to
you know, stay out of a double play. But I
don't know, man, it's just it gets frustrating at times
because this team, it's built this this team is constructed

(50:36):
to swing away. And yet at times when the offense
goes stagnant, you wish they could play small ball, and
they can't. They don't not lay down bonds. They can't
play that that style.

Speaker 3 (50:48):
Dude.

Speaker 5 (50:48):
As soon as I saw sasrselves are laid down that
bunt yesterday, I said, oh God, here here come the calls. Here,
here they come. See they bunted the baseball. And when
you do that, wait, all the good things happen. I mean,
this isn't nineteen ninety anymore. Like, that's not baseball. And
I mean if they if they felt like they could
do it, more gordy than they would. But I also,

(51:10):
on the same turn, would like to see if you
are going to do it, do it in situations, which
this team is not good at situation hitting, situational hitting.
And I also would not like to see it when
you're down by five, like Jose Altuv the other night
trying to lay down a pushbunt.

Speaker 3 (51:25):
It's like, what's that going to accomplish? Jose?

Speaker 5 (51:27):
All right, fine, you get on base, there's two runners on.
You're still down by five runs. And probably the next
guy's gonna swing at the first pitch and hit a
lazy canic corn fly ball at the right field.

Speaker 1 (51:37):
Yeah. My favorite is the bone with two outs, Like,
what are we doing here?

Speaker 5 (51:40):
I think there was two outs. That's the thing too,
Like I think there was. So I was just like,
what are you doing? Man, Like, what are you doing?

Speaker 1 (51:50):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (51:50):
I guess to that case, you're just trying to get
the pitch count up, you know, get the pitcher to
throw more pitches of this sitting.

Speaker 1 (51:56):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (51:56):
Oh great, I mean he can go from sixty six
to sixty seven pitches and in the ending, I mean,
that's It's just god, dude, Like, there are so many
times like that, and and this series was frustrating. And
I heard a call into you know, Matt and Ross
yesterday about the Astros not being able to pummel the Rockies.
I mean, the moral of the story is, as I said,
you won. Like it's not like there's a committee out there.

(52:19):
It's not like at the end of the season there's
Rob Manfred and a couple of owners and maybe a
couple of former players that are on the Major League
Baseball Postseason Committee, and they say well, look at the
Astros strength of victory against the Rockies. I mean, for
that reason, we probably have to have them as a
five seed in the American League.

Speaker 1 (52:37):
Yeah, God forbid.

Speaker 6 (52:38):
I mean, you know, yeah, let's let's put run differential
in there and as a deciding factor on on playoff seating.

Speaker 1 (52:46):
No, you're right.

Speaker 6 (52:47):
I mean, it's it's just about the goal here is
just win more series than you lose. I mean, that's
that's the bottom line of the reality situation. And you know,
we're in a tight division race here with Seattle still
and the good news is you have not squandered it.
Even with all your struggles post All Star Break, You've
still held onto this sleep well.

Speaker 5 (53:07):
And I think the other frustrating part of it is
for fans is how seemingly easy it is to take
an extra base against the Astros, because it is, I mean,
especially a ball gets out to the outfield. It was
nice to see camp Smith have that outfield assist yesterday,
but you weren't feeling good when the ball was going
out there because you're like, wow, they don't really throw
out anybody at the plate. Well, he was able to
do that. That was nice, But I mean it does

(53:28):
seem like, you know, you do have teams who are
able to readily available steal bases against you, and you
seemingly have a tough enough time being able to steal
them yourself. Although I mean Jacob Melton being up here,
he seemingly has shown he gets on base, he's got
an opportunity to take.

Speaker 3 (53:43):
An extra one.

Speaker 1 (53:45):
Yeah, he's been okay.

Speaker 6 (53:47):
The camp Smith thing is just wild to me, like
how he I mean, he has made some really nice
plays defensively, and it's crazy because he's never played the
position before and so yeah, man, it's he's got a
little of an arm out there. Remember it used to
be they used to always show the graphic on Space
City about you know these when when these three outfielders
out there for the Astros, you do not want to

(54:08):
run on them. And I feel like that's kind of
gone away, that they've lost a little bit of the
the strength and arms in the outfield with with Myers
being out and you know, I think Cazeu Sanchez is okay,
but obviously when Yourdon's and left, I don't know, it's
not it's not the best sometimes, but yeah, it's just
it's Cam Smith defensively making that big play yesterday.

Speaker 1 (54:30):
It's huge, He's he's had a handful of those this year.

Speaker 5 (54:32):
One of the game, and Christian Walker able to help
him out in the eighth inning to take it four
to three. Someone three two, one, two, five seven nine.
Squeeze in one more before we get to the stakeout
Grant and full sher Grant, what's going on?

Speaker 8 (54:45):
Good morning, all bluge, come on, cage and last.

Speaker 16 (54:53):
So I'm here to interrupt the snooze fest of a
conversation about bunting and base running to talk about the
University of Louisiana raging Cajuns. Uh, here to answer all
the questions that you guys have about the Cajuns. And Uh,
I think there's a fifty burger coming the way of
the Rice Owls.

Speaker 3 (55:13):
There you go, take take it to Rice Cajuns.

Speaker 5 (55:16):
I mean, you know Gordey LSU taking on Clemson, but
you know the Cajuns, Uh, you know, taking on the
Owls and trying to take it to them.

Speaker 16 (55:27):
A home game against Yeah, LSU's got their fair share
of games this year, club in the Baby Shields. But look,
I think I'm fired up for the Cajuns this year.
We've got a five star quarterback out of high school
who's only ever played behind Jade and Daniels and Jackson Dart.

(55:48):
We got a solid offensive line and a veteran running
back group with a great defense and a good front seven,
and I feel great about the Cajuns this year.

Speaker 3 (55:58):
Uh, the Louisiana name came.

Speaker 16 (56:00):
From us and wanting to separate ourselves from all the
other lesser state schools in the area.

Speaker 3 (56:07):
We're never gonna.

Speaker 16 (56:07):
Compete with Olshue, and we don't want to. We don't
want the culture of a bunch of crooked politicians stuff
and money in the university and then back in their pockets.
We're certainly happy where we're at, and we're never trying
to compete with Big Brother because we don't want to
be on that level. We'll eventually get there one day,
but not by the way that they do it. And
go Cajun's and you have a great day, and let's

(56:30):
talk about something other than bunting and base running.

Speaker 3 (56:33):
I appreciate grant.

Speaker 5 (56:34):
Hey, Look the first part I do agree with you on,
because yes, it is one of those if somebody, ah,
you know, they should bunt more what bunt when they're
down by five runs. Yeah, that's that's usually when you
do that. But raging Cajun trash talk, Gordy, I mean,
I guess I asked for it and Grant delivered on it.
So good for Grant.

Speaker 1 (56:52):
Did not have that on my biingo card this morning.
And yeah, I mean.

Speaker 6 (56:56):
It's Look, they're the they're the biggest thing in that
small little town. But Grant, next time, next time, next
time I need a good jumble eye recipe, I know
who to call, because, uh, you don't know good football,
but you know how to cook problem well.

Speaker 5 (57:10):
And now hold on now, I mean you know, Akadiana
is a great part of the state. All right, I'm
not going to stand here for for your badgering of
the area that has the original Marti Gras where they
run Marty Gras where you try to catch a chicken
for the gumbo that night. And then what's the other one? Oh,
the boot an stop right there?

Speaker 3 (57:30):
What is it? It's in Opelousis.

Speaker 6 (57:34):
Well, there's yeah, there's there's the well, there's the one
on I ten when you're when you're heading west, it's
right around right past rain, you know, the Frog Capital.
Anytime you could go to a place that's known for frogs,
So you know you're in a great part of the country.

Speaker 5 (57:47):
Oh okay, I heard that backhanded slight right there. I
get it, Grant, I got your back.

Speaker 1 (57:54):
Man.

Speaker 5 (57:54):
You know Gordie over here, he's an elitist that that
went to a Catholic school in New Orleans, you know,
and just thinks that, you know, New Orleans in that
area is the only part of the state.

Speaker 3 (58:02):
I get it, I get it. It's fine.

Speaker 6 (58:05):
No, there's Baton Rouge, and then there's that whole weird,
swampy area to the west where the only thing that
good good comes out of is just crawfish.

Speaker 1 (58:13):
That's about it.

Speaker 6 (58:13):
We passed through that area, they go, oh, this is
where they make crawfish, and then somebody says they play
football here.

Speaker 1 (58:18):
I'm not really sure.

Speaker 5 (58:21):
I like that they make crawfish here. Well, I think
most of us are happy about that.

Speaker 3 (58:26):
John.

Speaker 5 (58:26):
We see you right there. We'll get you involved. But

Speaker 3 (01:01:08):
Seattle off yesterday.

Speaker 5 (01:01:10):
College Football Week one Saturday Tomorrow, Texas taking on Ohio
State in Columbus. Coverage is gonna start here at Sports
Talk seven ninety at ten AM and LSU and Clemson
tomorrow night five point thirty over on KPRC nine fifty, Gordy.
It is the start of college football season. And as
a matter of fact, maybe what you're about to hear
from Deon Sanders will play out tonight because the head

(01:01:33):
coach of Colorado and the Buffalo's taken on Georgia Tech
for a Friday night game. He sat down for what
I can only assume is maybe, like you know, how
in some areas that you'll have like you know, when
I was in Georgia, one of the local TV stations
there would have the rights to be able to air
such shows like this where it's basically like a thirty

(01:01:54):
minute PSA and it's the Coaches Show. I guess if
you will, Well, this is what it looked like it
was for Dion, So probably airing in Colorado where it's
you know, hey, coach, tell us about your team, tell
us about the game, all of those things. Well, Dion's
being interviewed in this sound bite and he's asked about
what surprised him about the home venue there in Colorado,

(01:02:15):
and this was his answer.

Speaker 12 (01:02:18):
Is there anything about falsehome about this stadium that surprised
you that you didn't expect?

Speaker 1 (01:02:23):
Yeah, this middle weed in the second quarter got me.

Speaker 12 (01:02:27):
Like every game, I'm like, dang, Like it seems like
it's like a light up quarter, you know.

Speaker 10 (01:02:32):
What I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (01:02:33):
So is this the quarter that y'all chose? Like I'm saying,
it's a TV timeout it never fails in. I'm like, wow,
what's going on?

Speaker 8 (01:02:40):
Because you know, I've never been had there in my life,
so that's that's kind of new to me.

Speaker 5 (01:02:45):
So it's the weed quarter there at Colorado because we
know what Colorado is known for, the rocky Mountain states.
I mean, if you've ever been to Colorado, you're walking
down one of those streets and you'll see a sign
that looks like the Red Cross but it's green on store. Well,
I'll lets you know that's where you can go. And
if you want to participate medicinally, oh, that's that's that's

(01:03:06):
where you can go. But like Wisconsin going into the
fourth quarter, they've got jump around, you've got Texas Tech,
they'll throw tortillas on the field. I guess that Colorado
student section is known for, Hey, this is the time
for us to start lighting up.

Speaker 6 (01:03:21):
But isn't it like it's it's like, uh, edibles and
stuff are legal, but like, is is it legal to
just take out a joint and light it up at
a football game?

Speaker 16 (01:03:31):
Look?

Speaker 1 (01:03:32):
I feel like that still is illegal in Colorado? Maybe
but wrong.

Speaker 5 (01:03:36):
Yeah, maybe in the stadium it is because it's kind
of like smoking, like believe it or not. Even in
twenty twenty five, you still have people who smoke. And
I used to work with a guy in one of
my former spots that would always, oh, I gotta find
the smoking section. I was like, oh, maybe you should
just like, you know, I don't know vape like other
people do now, you know, just just a thought, so
you don't smell like cigarettes and just you know, when

(01:03:59):
you come around, people will be like, dude, people still smoke, Like,
don't you judge people a little bit whenever, like you know,
you meet them and you smell cigarette smoke on them.

Speaker 10 (01:04:07):
I do.

Speaker 6 (01:04:10):
Well, it was a thing back in the in the
nineties and two thousands if you worked in like retail
or something. You know, most jobs you wouldn't get a break.
But the only way you could get a break is
if you were a smoker. You go anyway, I gotta
go grab a smoke. And so a lot of people
would pick up that the dirty habit because it would
get you a break.

Speaker 1 (01:04:29):
Off off of your job.

Speaker 5 (01:04:30):
So so are you saying that Big Tobacco somehow worked
with like the labor forces out there and said, well,
you know, we'll make it good for you if you're
able to fight for smoke breaks. I mean every other break,
you know, not so much, but that one, but no
for this one, you know, Dion saying that, Like, imagine

(01:04:50):
that too, where it's hey, hey, hey, let's get the
team up here for a second, you know, just let's
let's make a couple of adjustments here, and everybody starts
looking around because you know, the smell almost smell like
a skunk came by where you know, you're like, hey, man,
who's got the good stuff?

Speaker 1 (01:05:06):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (01:05:07):
I don't believe that, by the way, I think was
there one or two people lighting up and he caught
the whiff? Sure, but I don't believe that Colorado home
games they're just all toking up.

Speaker 5 (01:05:21):
Well, I mean, at least it's legal in that state,
so I mean it doesn't surprise me from that standpoint.
But Dion talking about that's what he remembers about games
right there, and it always cracks me up to of
like what you remember from certain venues, Like I remembered
a few years ago an NFL coach hearing them talk
about going up to Green Bay and they were playing
them on a Monday night and they're like, ah, you know,

(01:05:42):
lambeau Field one of the most iconic venues. What do
you remember he goes orange hunting jackets because that's how
cold it is, So these people wear their jackets that
they wear into the deer blind to the games. So
in addition to seeing green and gold in the crowd,
you see a bunch of orange jackets.

Speaker 1 (01:05:58):
Also pretty well that Dion's neverchoked up before. Did you
hear that part?

Speaker 5 (01:06:01):
And I heard that, Yeah, I've never been high a
day in my life. I heard him say that. You
you know, he.

Speaker 1 (01:06:08):
Was high the day he said that Shador was gonna
go number one overall.

Speaker 5 (01:06:11):
But oh, that's that's what it is. Okay, all right,
that's fine. I mean, you know, take your shots. It's
all good. I mean, Dion Sun then you know, a
Kadieana Louisiana. I see how your roll in this morning.
Gordy here, you're definitely you're definitely picking and choosing your spots,
that's for sure.

Speaker 6 (01:06:28):
Well, the ul Raging Caguns will always be the ul
Raging Cagenes.

Speaker 1 (01:06:32):
You will never be the Louisiana.

Speaker 5 (01:06:34):
We are University of Louisiana, sir, and you will like it.
Well maybe every like.

Speaker 1 (01:06:39):
If A and M was like, you know, we're gonna
drop the A and M. We'd like to be known
as the University of.

Speaker 5 (01:06:43):
Texas, University of Texas in college station, like you real
quick here before we get to Will Matthews, I had
no idea that there even wasn't East Texas. A and
M Like I saw that they're taking on SMU this weekend,
and I saw that on one of the lower thirds
this weekend this week and I was like, that almost
sounds like a school that's made up for like Friday

(01:07:06):
night lights or for like necessary roughness or something.

Speaker 1 (01:07:10):
Where is that what city?

Speaker 5 (01:07:12):
I'm gonna have to look it up. I don't know,
maybe like Tyler, Longview or something like that. Is it
a new school? I don't know. I'm sure somebody out
there can probably tell us where East Texas A and
M it's in wherever Hunt County is.

Speaker 3 (01:07:24):
Oh, it's in Commerce. I don't even know where Commerce is.

Speaker 6 (01:07:30):
I've heard of Commerce Texas, East Texas.

Speaker 5 (01:07:33):
I guess, I mean, I guess that answers our question.
But yeah, for any East Texas, East Texas A and
M a lums out there, well, you're taking on SMU
this weekend, so PSA.

Speaker 1 (01:07:44):
It's it's like northeast of Dallas.

Speaker 5 (01:07:48):
Okay. See, that's what cracks me up to is like
my dad's from the Golden Triangle and I used to
date a girl that was from Longview and she would
always tell me.

Speaker 3 (01:07:58):
Oh, no, no a long View and Tyler or is East Texas.

Speaker 5 (01:08:00):
I'm like, bs Beaumont and Orange is East Texas, right
Theyn't that funny?

Speaker 6 (01:08:06):
How like we're we're so far south at Texas. When
we think East Texas, we think Beaumont. But yeah, they
they all think east of Dallas.

Speaker 5 (01:08:14):
Right yeah, yeah, once you get east of Terrell, that's
when East Texas starts. I guess the Piney Woods as
they tell you.

Speaker 1 (01:08:21):
But anyway, White House, that's that's up there, right yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:08:24):
I think it's like Longview Tyler area where Mahomes is from.
Did you see by the way, and and we'll get
to Will Matthews here, but did you see somebody did
the the deep fake video where you superimposed faces and
they did the part for for Travis Kelcey and Travis
Kelsey was Will Ferrell's part in Old School, and the
Will Ferrell part was Patrick Mahomes and he's doing the

(01:08:47):
look at the baby, look at the baby, always judging
and Leah Remin the East character is Brittany Mahomes.

Speaker 6 (01:08:55):
I saw last night Nebraska playing Cincinnati at at Arrowhead
and the entrance Dylan Rayola, who is apparently obsessed with
Patrick Mahomes, made his entrance looking just like Patrick Mahomes
like same haircuts as everything.

Speaker 1 (01:09:15):
That's weird, bro.

Speaker 3 (01:09:17):
It really is.

Speaker 5 (01:09:17):
And his his explanation for it the other day was,
it's not my fault I look like him. You do
a pretty good job of trying to look like him too, Bud, Right.

Speaker 6 (01:09:26):
He does not naturally look like Patrick Mahomes. He's going
out of his way to look that way.

Speaker 5 (01:09:31):
It's it's a strange obsession, but we say that watch.
I mean, like baby Gronk's dad wants his son to
be a football player so bad. I guarantee you there
is a dad out there right now that is like
putting his eight year old on TV twelve and trying
to get him to look like Tom Brady. He kind
of looks like Tom Brady. We got to really make
him look like Tom Brady. Well, that doesn't really translate

(01:09:51):
to talent on the field. That's the problem. Yeah, And
Nebraska almost blew that one last sight. Cincinnati too, they did,
they did. All right, Let's get in a little bit
of Texas Longhorns because Will Matthews is on the sideline
for Longhorn games on the radio, former Texas offensive linemen.
He's gonna be up there in Columbus tomorrow we'll talk
some horns with him.

Speaker 1 (01:10:12):
Right here.

Speaker 5 (01:10:12):
It is the Shawn Salisbury Show on a fight Song Friday,
Sports Talk seven to ninety.

Speaker 7 (01:10:17):

Speaker 2 (01:11:52):
The Sean Salisbury Show continued.

Speaker 3 (01:12:25):
It's that time of the year. You know this one.

Speaker 5 (01:12:28):
If you throw the horns up and you wear burnt
orange and white, it is fight song Friday. Here on
the Sean Salisbury Show. Sports Talk seven ninety Horns taking
on Ohio State tomorrow in Columbus.

Speaker 3 (01:12:42):
Again.

Speaker 5 (01:12:42):
We'll have that game right here on your home of
the Longhorns Sports Talk seven ninety starting at ten am.
And also the LSU in Clemson game tomorrow night is
gonna be over on KPRC nine to fifty. Stros and
Angels coming up tonight after the Stros take two out
of three from thes In in downtown Houston at dyke

(01:13:03):
In Park. They went yesterday four to three. Still witting
to catch up with Will Matthews here in just a second, Gordy.
But you know, the funny thing is about this Texas team,
And you know, I was listening to somebody yesterday talking
with Greg Tepper of Dave Campbell's Texas Football, and he
said that, you know, title game or bust this year
for Texas. I gave you my thoughts yesterday. I think

(01:13:26):
that Texas the fact that they actually have to go
on the road this year in the SEC and you
have as much to replace defensively and offensively, well actually
more offensively than defensively.

Speaker 3 (01:13:37):
Just feel like that.

Speaker 5 (01:13:39):
You know, it's it's going to be a little bit
of as deeper climb, But hold that thought Gordy because
now Will is joining us. Will Hey appreciate it, buddy,
thanks for hopping on with us. You know, I was
just mentioning before you came on about all of the
players that Texas has to replace on offense. Let's start
first with the offensive line. I know people want to
talk arch and we will. But when you have to

(01:14:00):
replace four out of five starters and you've got a
guy that's really becoming a first time starter, isn't that
a little bit of a concern.

Speaker 8 (01:14:07):
Yeah, I mean it really is. You can't supplement active
reps and no matter how much you practice, and that
is definitely a concern, especially with significant portion of the line,
you know, being renewed. New guys with some reps last year,
great guys who we know are going to get the
job done. But you know, the question is cohesiveness. Can

(01:14:29):
those guys actually get it together for tomorrow?

Speaker 6 (01:14:35):
Talking with Will Matthews and obviously getting ready to see
what the what the Astros, or rather what the Longhorns
could do up there in Columbus taken on Ohio State
tomorrow morning, and uh, well, I mean I look at
the backfield and say, you know, this should be one.

Speaker 1 (01:14:51):
Of the best backfields in the country.

Speaker 6 (01:14:54):
You know, all to talk about arch and all this,
but if the offensive line is as good as they
think it can be, I'm think them for this game
should be running football and play that dominant defense that
they played all last year and don't even have to
put the ball in Archer's hands to win it. Because
if this ground game could be what we think it
could be, maybe going it that.

Speaker 8 (01:15:12):
Way, you know, as an ex running back and pull back,
you're talking my language.

Speaker 10 (01:15:18):
That's exactly what I want to hear. I want to
hear that ground and pound.

Speaker 8 (01:15:22):
I mean, traditionally Texas has the last couple of years,
even though we were in the playoffs final four appearances,
that last little bit of getting that third and one,
that ground and pound, like we're just gonna shove it
down and we're just gonna go with lacking it and
with the maturity that we're seeing over there.

Speaker 10 (01:15:44):
With them and what we think is possible.

Speaker 8 (01:15:46):
That's really the extra edge, especially with CJ.

Speaker 10 (01:15:49):
Baxter coming back.

Speaker 8 (01:15:50):
Christian Clark being back there, and of course Trey Wiseman again.

Speaker 17 (01:15:54):
Well.

Speaker 5 (01:15:55):
Matthews joined US sidelines on the Texas Longhorns Radio Network
with Craig and Roger Wallace joining us here on the
Seawan Salisbury Show. Defensively, I mean, everybody looks at Anthony Hill,
Manny Muhammad, guys like that, and for good reason, Michael
Taff back there at the safety spot. But up front,
how do they feel about that group on the line?

Speaker 8 (01:16:15):
You know, you know, Anthony's Colin Simmons is going to
do his thing, Anthony Hill is going to also do
his thing. But the thing I'm so excited to see
is guys like Colevavard, James January, guys down low who
you know, haven't haven't been in the limelight as much,
but the opportunity there is enormous. We're really leaning heavily

(01:16:38):
on that front seven, feeling that they're going to come
together in.

Speaker 10 (01:16:41):
A way that's going to be really special.

Speaker 8 (01:16:44):
We and I mean even to mention Trey Moore can't
wait to see what he can do his second year
in this defense, especially being cross trained on the edge.

Speaker 10 (01:16:53):
And at linebacker.

Speaker 8 (01:16:54):
I mean, there, we've got so many versatile pieces that
we're going to be able to move and I think
the power and that and really the emphasis is going
to be that front seven.

Speaker 6 (01:17:04):
Well, let's let's talk about Arch. All the hype and
everything that's built towards this.

Speaker 5 (01:17:10):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (01:17:10):
I keep hearing people say, oh, you know it's it's
you know, acting like it's his first start. I mean,
he did start two games last year in the Absen
sequent Yours, got his feet wet a good bit last year,
So I don't think the moment's going to be too
big for him. But I've heard multiple people say this week,
nobody prepares better than the Mannings. And you got to
think that either from Grandpa Archie, Uncle Peyton or Uncle

(01:17:33):
Eli on down to Dad Cooper, Like, I think that
they have prepared Arch for this moment, and I just
can't foresee, you know, a game that he's gonna go
out there throw four interceptions and just look terribly.

Speaker 1 (01:17:45):
I feel like he's going to be well prepared for
this moment.

Speaker 8 (01:17:48):
Yeah, you know, you're right, And that's really the sentiment. It's, Uh,
he's shown this whole time that you know, he was
okay with taking the time it takes to really cook
to get ready. I mean, up with the difference in
Ohio State that you know, Julian's saying this off season

(01:18:09):
was fighting for a role and of course, kudos to
him for winning that that job and being the starting quarterback,
but he's facing a guy who's.

Speaker 10 (01:18:18):
Been waiting in the wings, who.

Speaker 8 (01:18:22):
Is focused and who has earned the respect of that
locker room years ago, and so transitioning into that starting
role where where the Ohio State quarterback was fighting for
his role, We've got Arch who is leading a team.
He's spent his whole off season leading the team and

(01:18:42):
now just at the helm and making it his team.
It's a special thing. So I'm excited to see what
he does. And you know, adversity comes to us all
and there will be some setbacks and some things that
you know will be like wow, what happened there?

Speaker 10 (01:18:56):
But you know, I'm ready to see this young van
do his thing.

Speaker 5 (01:18:59):
A couple more minutes with former Texas running back fullback
Will Matthews, who does the sidelines on the Texas radio
call with Craig Way and Roger Wallace.

Speaker 3 (01:19:09):
And last year we.

Speaker 5 (01:19:10):
Saw a defensive game plan and I understand that, you know,
Matt Patricia's there now, Jim Nole's no longer there as
the DC, but with what Texas faced last year, it
seemed like Ohio State knew vertically was going to be
a challenge for them, So keep everything in front of them.
What do you think they're going to try to throw
at Arch tomorrow to try to throw them off?

Speaker 8 (01:19:30):
You know, they've got some really incredible players up there.
They are the champs for a reason because of their
coaching and because of their personnel and because of their culture,
and so Texas is really going to have to earn it.
And I think that's the way that Texas really really wants.

Speaker 10 (01:19:47):
To do it.

Speaker 8 (01:19:48):
And what I would be doing, and what they're going
to do is they're going to try to confuse them.
They're going to try to send different people from different
places and also a play on the inexperience of the
of the line. Can we confuse them up front and
can we bring can we bring somebody in the back

(01:20:09):
that's free and leave ours one on one with somebody.
Well we feel really confident about Arch's ability to do that.
But still, I mean, I can foresee a little bit
of adversity coming there because of House, they be such
a great defense. But we're hoping that Arch can prevail
and that the Longhorns will pull it out.

Speaker 6 (01:20:29):
It is interesting though, well, when you look at the
schedule and know that you have a road trip at Florida,
you got Oklahoma in Dallas, you got a road trip
blatant season in Georgia. Then of course you host A
and M to finish the season.

Speaker 1 (01:20:41):
It is is.

Speaker 6 (01:20:42):
A pretty This is a much difficult, more difficult schedule
than last year. And you know, while this game doesn't
make or break or you know, if you lose this,
when you're not out of the playoffs, it is going
to make it more difficult knowing you got you know,
multiple Moore potential losses.

Speaker 8 (01:20:57):
Down the road, you know, and that's really the testament
of what of what Texas is looking to build. You know,
it's a guys come to Texas and because of the schedule,
because they're going to play those big time games, and
you know, it is a daunting task to to try

(01:21:20):
to try and overcome some of these names. I mean, Florida,
that's gonna be that's gonna be a bee stand him
coming in here, that's going to Athens. Those are those
are new experiences.

Speaker 10 (01:21:28):
But that's what college football is about. As much as that.
As you look at that and go, man, that could
be a red flag.

Speaker 8 (01:21:34):
Goodness for me, I'm like, let's go, let's take it on,
and just being with coach Sark this week, it seems
like the players are taking on that personality where they're saying,
you know, we're so thankful and excited for this schedule
and it's a great opportunity for us to play great
teams and get some wins and learn along the way

(01:21:56):
on our way to the playoffs.

Speaker 5 (01:21:58):
Are to argue with that again, You're going to hear
him tomorrow morning here on the call of the Texas
Longhorns and Ohio States up there in Columbus. As you
hear all of the Texas football games here on Sports
Talk seven ninety, he is Will Matthews on the sidelines
with Craig Way and Roger Wallace. Well, safe travels up
to Ohio, and we'll definitely catch up with the again

(01:22:19):
here very soon.

Speaker 10 (01:22:21):
All right, talk soon hook them There you.

Speaker 5 (01:22:23):
Go, Will Matthews again joining us here, and a lot
of things that we can react to, and one thing
in particular, too, Gordy, that I like that he said
there about this matchup tomorrow in Texas. This season and
college football as a whole, we'll get into as we
continue to roll along here on the Sewn Salisbury show
on a Fight Song Friday Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 7 (01:22:43):
Hey Sean here, and I asked the DNM Leasing executive
the other day, who is your ideal customer? Is it
someone who writes checks for ultra luxury cars and is
having second thoughts about that depreciation. Is it someone who
trades away three years, constantly accumulating negative equity while making
higher payments every time. Or is it a budget conscious
customer looking to say forty to fifty percent in monthly

(01:23:05):
payments with reasonable terms. His answer was, it's all of
them and more white glove concierge experience at less costs.
Luxury suv, sports cars, pickup trucks, family sedans. We do
it all at DNM Leasing. With fifty thousand active customers.
We have the program for you, and our experts currently
are on standby all of them. Leasing is not renting,

(01:23:25):
it's the smarter option for most. If you've listened to
us for all these years, you have not reached out,
It's time you call now. Dial seven to one three
two nine zero one thousand. That's seven one three two
nine zero one thousand or Dmodoleasing dot com.

Speaker 2 (01:23:40):
Want Sean Salisbury continues on seven ninety.

Speaker 3 (01:23:57):
Fike's on Friday Here Sean Salisbury Show.

Speaker 5 (01:24:00):
I know a lot of you already in the mood, Gordy,
you got your purple and gold on today. I know
that Fridays are school colors days, I believe.

Speaker 3 (01:24:10):
So do you.

Speaker 1 (01:24:14):
Uh for for college? Uh huh?

Speaker 5 (01:24:16):
Yeah, the friday of college football season, the first Friday.

Speaker 3 (01:24:19):
Yeah, that's school colors Day.

Speaker 1 (01:24:21):
That's whatever I have.

Speaker 3 (01:24:23):
So the answer is no, I don't like all that.

Speaker 6 (01:24:26):
You know, like where it's like the Texans are playing
this weekend.

Speaker 1 (01:24:30):
It's go Texan Day.

Speaker 6 (01:24:31):
Let's all wear our Texans colors on a Friday to work.

Speaker 1 (01:24:35):
No, I think that's whatever.

Speaker 3 (01:24:37):
You're not You're not taking the bit right there. Huh.
You're not wearing the pieces of flair.

Speaker 6 (01:24:43):
Yeah, Dan, if you're coming to the game with me
this this Sunday, make sure you wear your Liberty white.

Speaker 3 (01:24:47):
Oh that's right.

Speaker 1 (01:24:48):
I'm gonna wear whatever the hell I want to a Texans.

Speaker 5 (01:24:51):
I mean, you gotta you've got to dress the part.
I mean it's you know, kind of like uh during
playoff time in the NBA where they put you on
the video board. If you're not wearing the t shirt
that was in your seat, Like for a guy like me,
I mean, who's a double X. I mean I think
if they put me up there, I'd be like, well,
I can't really wear it because it doesn't fit, and

(01:25:12):
I don't think anybody wants to see that.

Speaker 1 (01:25:15):
Yeah, they've I think they've the consensus.

Speaker 6 (01:25:19):
They've kind of gone to Most stadiums have gone to
extra large now, right for the.

Speaker 5 (01:25:24):
Yeah, so, I mean, if it's a first time wear
and it has been washed and dried, maybe I could
pull it off. But for the most part, it's it's
still not a good look, Gordy. I'm working on it though.

Speaker 1 (01:25:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:25:35):
I feel like years ago they used to do large though,
and I was just you were asking for trouble.

Speaker 3 (01:25:39):
Yeah, yeah, definitely so.

Speaker 5 (01:25:41):
But the Horns they're gonna have some trouble on their
hands tomorrow. Taken on Ohio State again. You can hear
that right here on Sports Talk seven ninety starting at
ten am with Craig Way, Roger Wallace and of course
the guy we just talked to, Will Matthews on the sidelines.
Apologized to Will earlier I had said offensive lineman. Well
completely forgot that he had played running back. Fullback at

(01:26:02):
University of Texas during his time there on the forty Acres,
So just wanted to clear that up. But LSU Clemson
also going to be taking on each other tomorrow night,
with the Stros being on here on Sports Talk seventy
ninety and also over on News radio seven forty KTRH.
You can catch that game if you're looking forward on
the radio KPRC nine p fifty. But you know, Gordy,

(01:26:22):
something that we can also carry over here is our
good buddy Matt Moscona is going to join us here
in an hour and a half. And he was on
with Sean on one of Sean's other shows, and he
was talking about wanting to go away from the directional
school FCS games on the schedule and saying that like
games this weekend, this is what fans want to see.

(01:26:42):
We've heard schools talk about, well, we've got an attendance problem.
People are going to less games, all of those different things,
and I mean conferences going to nine games, the SEC
just going there. I mean, is this something that we're
going to see more of? Is opening weekends like this
where it's not just going to be oh man, this
is a real awesome one this weekend. It's going to
be that you're seeing more games like this and less

(01:27:05):
of those.

Speaker 1 (01:27:07):
I see. I think the big the biggest thing.

Speaker 6 (01:27:10):
They came out and said that the playoff committee came
out what last week and said that they are going
to use now as part.

Speaker 1 (01:27:17):
Of their criteria.

Speaker 6 (01:27:20):
Strength of schedule is now going to play a factor
into you know, uh, the selection committee and how they
choose the playoff field. To me, that's what they need
to do if they want to keep these early season games,
because look, look at it on paper, Dan, you know
Florida is opening with Long Island University tomorrow. I didn't

(01:27:40):
even know Long Island was a school, whereas LSU's going
on the road at top five Clemson. Why in the hell,
you know, if this committee all they look at is
just wins over losses.

Speaker 1 (01:27:51):
And you know, Indiana gets in last.

Speaker 6 (01:27:54):
Year what were they ten and to eleven and one whatever,
but didn't play a damn rank didn't beat a ranked
team all year, but they get in the in the playoff.
To me, it's like, why, why are you gonna make
this harder on yourself? Like LSU loses this game, what's
the immediate reaction gonna be Oh, they're done, they're done,
They're not making the playoff. You know, it's like why

(01:28:15):
even schedule these games? And so yeah, I don't know,
I don't know what the future is gonna hold for
these big Week one games. Same thing with Texas Like
I'm sure there's a little longmor fans going, why don't
we just open with Sam Houston State? And like why
are we going? Why are we going on the road
to play at Ohio State? Because what it becomes is,
you know, it's not like the selection committee in basketball

(01:28:35):
and college basketball, you get you of age, gets credit
for going to play on the road at Bama in December,
you know what I mean, Like, that's.

Speaker 1 (01:28:43):
That's a good quality loss.

Speaker 6 (01:28:45):
Yet in college football, in the iteration of this college
football playoff committee, they have not given you credit for
a good loss. It's been oh, you lost, so we're
gonna ding you. Well, then I'd be scheduled as many
soft opponents as I can give me, give me Texas State,
give me, you know, as many weak opponents as I can't.

Speaker 1 (01:29:02):
No offense at Texas State. Didn't mean for them to
catch us straight, but Brad.

Speaker 6 (01:29:05):
Saying for the power programs, like why why you know
the future of these big non conference games.

Speaker 1 (01:29:10):
I don't know if they're going to stick around.

Speaker 5 (01:29:12):
Yeah, it's gonna be something to keep an eye on.
And I think a couple of things too. To bring
up about the points you just brought up, we'll do
that here as we start the eight o'clock hour again.

Speaker 3 (01:29:20):
Matt mascone, I'm gonna join us at nine point thirty.

Speaker 5 (01:29:23):
As I mentioned, we've got Texas on our family of
stations here and we also have LSU, so definitely want
to get the LSU side of things as we get
ready for a great college football weekend here. You'll hear
some of it here on Sports Talk seven ninety, and
we'll also be watching it as we continue here on
the Shawn Salisbury Show.

Speaker 3 (01:29:39):

that you had brought up there in the last hour
about the college football Playoff Committee and the real emphasis
on the strength of schedule.

Speaker 3 (01:31:03):
And I get what you're saying too.

Speaker 5 (01:31:04):
I mean for schools like Texas LSU going on the
road this weekend taking on two really good opponents, I
mean Ohio State, some people wonder if they've got enough
to be able to repeat as national champions this year.
Out at Clemson, people believe that Dabbo has that program
back in position to be able to win again. And
I get what you're saying about that part, But I mean,

(01:31:26):
isn't there something to be said though, for you know,
schools that are not in the SEC or even the
Big Ten that have to play against you know, Penn State, Michigan,
some of the other schools that are really good. Because
I mean, I think we found out last night the
bottom or middle tier of the Big Ten is not
that good because you saw some teams really struggle with
teams they shouldn't have last night.

Speaker 3 (01:31:45):
But I mean the SEC, it's very valid in that.

Speaker 5 (01:31:47):
I mean, for LSU, LSU loses that game tomorrow, they
are in a really steep uphill climb. If Clemson loses tomorrow,
well then the way the ACC is, I don't see
them having a real tough time. I'm trying to get
through that conference and making their way to Charlotte for
the championship game and maybe even getting into the College
Football playoffs.

Speaker 1 (01:32:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:32:09):
I just again, I go back to this playoff committee
and the president. They said, and this is the toughest
part of college football. Is not every schedules created equal.
In the NFL, You're gonna play a tough schedule no
matter what, you know what I mean, Like there's no
you can't hide, you can't just play I don't know
the Jaguars fifteen weeks, but you know, for a school,
and I hate to keep harping on Indiana, but like

(01:32:31):
Indiana knew what they were doing. They went out and
scheduled their non conference was last year was Florida International,
Western Illinois, and Charlotte.

Speaker 1 (01:32:39):
They didn't even try to.

Speaker 6 (01:32:40):
Test themselves out of conference. And then in conference they
got all the unranked Big Ten teams and Ohio State
and that was it. And they're one test against Ohio State.
They got their brains beat in. So you know, it's
like to me, that's where this thing it becomes so
hard in college football because Indiana wants to beat there
justin go.

Speaker 1 (01:33:00):
Play in the Big Ten.

Speaker 6 (01:33:01):
Yeah, but you didn't play Oregon, you didn't play Penn State,
you didn't play Michigan or well they played Michigan. But
like you didn't play any of the good ranked teams
in the Big Ten last year outside of Oio State.

Speaker 1 (01:33:12):
You got your brains beating.

Speaker 6 (01:33:13):
So that's where I say, like, until the committee starts
dinging you and going, hey, go schedule a tough non conference,
there's no reason to do it, schedule three cupcakes and
just coast because the committee's going to reward you for it.

Speaker 5 (01:33:27):
Well, I mean, I think that along that line of
thinking is I mean, I understand the challenging your part
portion of it where I mean Nick Saban would say
that every single year for the longest time when he
was at Bama, because they normally would play against a
power five school, normally in a neutral site game. And
Saban's reasoning for it was, well, I want to see

(01:33:48):
what my guys have and I want them to be
tested right out of the gate, because it feels like
if we prepare ourselves now, once we face an LSU
or somebody like that in September October, we feel like
that we're gonna be more for that game.

Speaker 6 (01:34:02):
I guess, but I you know, the problem is you
schedule a really tough non conference game and you lose it,
You're gonna get dinged. They're gonna they're gonna hold that
over you more more than they're gonna, you know, give
you credit for a tough loss. And I get It's
like it's funny. There's there's people out there, Oh, you're scared,
you're scared. Yeah, those same people saying, the are the

(01:34:23):
ones not playing a tough non conference like you know,
it's it's just I need the.

Speaker 1 (01:34:29):
Playoff committee to go.

Speaker 6 (01:34:30):
You know what, we're rewarding people going out and schedule
tough non conference games in Texas. You lose at Ohio
State tomorrow, we are not gonna hold that over you.
In fact, when we finish the season, you're nine and three.
If it's a strong nine and three with three top
twenty five wins, I'm we're putting you in ahead of
an eleven and one Indiana who didn't test themselves.

Speaker 5 (01:34:49):
Now, and that's a valid point, but I mean, you know,
kind of the old argument about expand the playoffs and
do all of that, which eventually they will. I mean, Gordy,
outside the top twelve last year, who are any of
the of teams that just missed out that you said? Man,
you know, if they had gotten in there, it could
have made some headway. I mean, would we really have
thought that way about Alabama? Would we really have thought
that way about Ole Miss or even South Carolina last year?

Speaker 6 (01:35:13):
Well, South Carolina was the one that you know, they
had the brutal early season loss to LSU, and it
was because Leonora Sellers got knocked out. And this is
where I take the committee, you know, like I take
them to task because two years ago they left a
really good Florida State team out because they lost their quarterback.

Speaker 1 (01:35:32):
Jordan Travis like, oh, we can't put them in their
quarterback got hurt.

Speaker 6 (01:35:35):
Yet you don't want to carry that same argument over
to South Carolina that finished the season winning six in
a row down the stretch, including being playoff team Clemson
and you know, a top twenty five Missouri team, because
they they had a third loss, and the third loss
was because their quarterback got hurt in that game and
never came back. So again, it's just I almost wonder like,

(01:35:58):
is it better go back to the BCS the beast, Yes,
the computers at least didn't have a brain and and
just looked at numbers and what hey, this is these
are the best teams as opposed to you know a
bunch of people sitting in suits in a in a
hotel ballroom up in Dallas. I just like, I don't
think they're using the all the data that's that's at

(01:36:18):
their hands that they should be looking at.

Speaker 5 (01:36:20):
Well, I mean, in that case, that's how you get
Oklahoma losing the Big Twelve championship, and then they go
and play against LSU in the national championship game. And
then we cause ourselves twenty two years of people like
Sean saying, oh, well we won the national championship that year.

Speaker 3 (01:36:34):
Now you didn't you didn't play in New Orleans that night.

Speaker 6 (01:36:37):
Sorry, well, and then it causes people like Auburn to
come out and go, well, if we're just claiming national championships,
we're gonna claim.

Speaker 1 (01:36:44):
A bunch too.

Speaker 5 (01:36:46):
I love too how they like kind of did that
under the cloak of darkness too, where it was hey,
you're gonna notice something new at the stadium this year.

Speaker 3 (01:36:53):
It's like, oh, really, when did you win these? I mean,
oh you want it?

Speaker 5 (01:36:57):
Then? Huh?

Speaker 3 (01:36:57):
What in half the country at war?

Speaker 15 (01:36:59):
Then?

Speaker 3 (01:37:00):
So was it really a national championship?

Speaker 6 (01:37:03):
Well, and back in the nineteen twenties, it was like,
like you go back and look at some of those,
like some of those early Alabama national championships, It's like
Alabama went six and two and lost the Sugar Bowl,
yet they claimed the national championship.

Speaker 1 (01:37:17):
It's like who decided this?

Speaker 5 (01:37:21):
Well, I guess somebody finally backed up enough to be
able to say, hey, you know, you could claim the
nineteen thirty nine national championship.

Speaker 3 (01:37:28):
Oh Texas A and M won that one. Yeah, sorry guess.

Speaker 5 (01:37:32):
But I mean eventually, I think what this is setting
up for is something that we've kind of been anticipating.
It's just kind of like, when are they going to
finally do it? Is that Power five is going to
our Power four is just going to break away and
they're gonna say, hey, we're going to do our thing.
Everybody else, good luck to you can do your thing,
and hey you can have your own little national championship.

Speaker 6 (01:37:55):
Well, because the reality is, Dan, how many teams kicking
off this weekend realistically have the chance to win.

Speaker 1 (01:38:00):
A national championship this year?

Speaker 17 (01:38:02):
Probably about four or five.

Speaker 6 (01:38:03):
I'm not well, I mean if even I'd say, I'd
say a dozen, you know at most, Like it's it
just sucks. It sucks that you have programs like you know,
I'm like the University of Houston that you know, you're
kicking off knowing you have zero chance of winning a
national cham Like it's just because the committee is not
going to They're not going to let teams in that

(01:38:25):
that that are on the outside.

Speaker 5 (01:38:27):
Well, I mean, I understand what you're saying, but I
think football, probably more than any other sport, is the
ultimate you either got it or you don't.

Speaker 3 (01:38:35):
Like do you have do you have the talent? Do
you have the players? Do you have the depth?

Speaker 5 (01:38:38):
Like basketball, maybe a little bit less, but I mean
usually it's the older, deeper teams that make a run.
I mean, you, of h you know able to do
it last year with a bunch of much older players
and a deeper roster, But I mean football it's pretty
much do you have a quarterback, do you have an
offensive line, do you have a playmaker in the skills?

(01:39:00):
Do you have a defensive just you know, game wrecker
on your side of the football. And if you have
those guys, well then yeah, you're probably going to win
every single week.

Speaker 6 (01:39:10):
But what I'm saying is in basketball, Butler can break
through and win a championship, FAU can break through and
make the final four. In football, schools like that have
zero chance of getting that far. I mean, and that's
where it's like, you know, is this a real true playoff?
You know, when we have to get a committee of
people in a room to vote who what's twelve select

(01:39:32):
teams get in. It's like all these other every other
sport has a playoff designed to you know, where sixty
plus teams get in and they get to earn it.
Football is the one where it's like it's a group
of people in a ballroom deciding your fate.

Speaker 5 (01:39:48):
Well, we get to get that process started tomorrow with
the first Saturday of college football and looking forward to it.
I know you are too as well, Gordy, So we'll
continue the college football conversation as the show goes along.
We've also gotten into some astros too. We'll get back
to that a little bit later. But I do want
to get into a little bit of Texans here, Gordy,
because yesterday's Cowboys news might have some people wondering what

(01:40:10):
the Texans will do with one of their own game
wreckers on the defensive side of the ball.

Speaker 3 (01:40:15):
We'll talk about it right here.

Speaker 5 (01:40:16):
Does a Sean Salisbury show on a Fight Song Friday
a Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (01:40:22):
Let the celebration start war Sean Salisbury.

Speaker 3 (01:40:26):
It's a Sean Salisbury show.

Speaker 5 (01:40:41):
Maazoo. Fans rejoice here on a fight Song Friday as
college football firing up tomorrow. You can get in some
tonight too. You get Baylor hosts in Auburn. Excited about
that one, Gordy. Also Georgia Tech at Colorado. That'll be
a lot of fun. But tomorrow here on Sports Talk
seven ninety you're gonna get Texas Ohio State starting at

(01:41:01):
ten am here on your home for Texas Longhorns football
and men's basketball in Houston, Sports Talk seven to ninety
LSU can be taken on Clemson five thirty tomorrow night.
That gets going on KPRC nine fifty. Stros get the
Angels in town after taking two or three from the Rockies.
They beat Colorado yesterday four to three. But want to

(01:41:22):
get into a little bit of Texans here, Gordy, as
the Will Anderson Junior News yesterday comes down as the
games were about to get going and watching on ESPN,
and you see, of course, you know, the breaking news
comes across. Cowboys trade Micah Parsons to the Packers, and
you're like, oh my god, they actually did this, Because
I mean, I think I was probably like most of

(01:41:43):
us here, didn't we all think that it was going
to eventually get figured out bygones would be bygones, Jerry
would get his way, he'd sign his player, the guy
would be on the field, everything would be good. But
then it seemed like about early yesterday afternoon it started
to fire up where it was, well, you know, actually
the Cowboys might be interested in some of these trade
proposals out there.

Speaker 1 (01:42:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:42:06):
I think I just saw this morning on social media.
It's a video of Michael Irvin, I don't know, one
of the talk shows doing interview two days ago and
they were asking him about, oh, you know, the reports
are the Cowboys are making Micah Parsons available via trade
talk and Michael Irvin shut it down.

Speaker 1 (01:42:23):
He goes, hey, no way. Hell.

Speaker 6 (01:42:25):
You know, he's like he's gonna he's gonna be a
Cowboy and that's gonna be the deal, and blah blah
blah blah. So yeah, I think we were all kind
of shocked. But this is where the tough part becomes
in how do you manage a managing a roster. You know,
everybody loves the yelpay the man whenever it's you know,
you have a fan favorite, a good player that is

(01:42:46):
due for a big contract. We've conditioned ourselves though, where
it's like if you have a guy and I'm not
saying just some Michael Parsons. But like, if you have
a guy who comes in as a rookie, like, what
were they yelling after the rookie season of c J.

Speaker 1 (01:43:00):
Stroud.

Speaker 6 (01:43:01):
Everybody's like, Oh, this kid's incredible. I mean, yeah, they
eventually you're gonna have to You're gonna have to pay them.
You're gonna have to make him one of the highest
paid quarterbacks in the league. And I'm going, wait a minute,
we're already yelling at after the rookie season. We're already
like anticipating, and so it just becomes like and it's
this stupid blank measuring contest that we all get into.
You know, it's like, oh, well, this quarterback, we made

(01:43:24):
him the highest paid quarterback. Well, now I have to
be the highest paid quarterback because I'm Patrick Wilomes.

Speaker 1 (01:43:28):
And it just it never ends.

Speaker 6 (01:43:31):
And so it becomes gone to the days that you
could just sign a pretty good linebacker to a pretty
good deal. It's like, no, I have to be the
highest paid and so it just becomes you price yourself
out of the market because there's in the NFL is
a thing called the salary gap, and you have to
stay under it. And so, you know, I think they
just looked at it and went, you know, Jerry made
a mistake obviously paying Zeke all that money, pay and

(01:43:53):
Dack all that money, and we're gonna look at the
back of those and call those mistakes. Then you know,
we have to look at this and say this was
a good decision to not pay Michael overpay Michael Parsons
and you know, and and maintain flexibility and get some
draft picks.

Speaker 5 (01:44:10):
Well, now people are wondering what does that mean for
a really good edge rusher here in Houston, Willy Anderson Junior.
He has eighteen sacks in his first couple of years
as a Texan. He's going to turn twenty four on
at Tuesdays. So started to get me thinking last night.
All right, simple Google search, who are some of the
highest paid edge rushers in the league. The highest paid
right now forty one million per that's t J Watt

(01:44:31):
right behind him, Miles Garrett.

Speaker 3 (01:44:33):
I think we can agree he's neither of those guys.

Speaker 5 (01:44:35):
The third highest paid, well, he's one of his teammates,
daneil Hunter, currently making thirty five point six. But the
comparisons for some of those guys that Willy Anderson Junior,
who is he compared to. I think one of them
could be Max Crosby. Crosby came in the league in
twenty nineteen. Ten sacks that season for the Raiders, seven
the following year, eight the year after that, and then
two of his best years that he had twenty two

(01:44:56):
and twenty three, twelve and a half and fourteen and
a half. And Brian, even though he's more of a
stand up outside linebacker, still an edge rusher seven and
a half and nine in his first couple of seasons.

Speaker 3 (01:45:06):
His best year was twenty twenty two.

Speaker 5 (01:45:09):
In terms of what those guys are making, Crosby is
thirty five point five, so just a million less than
Daniel Hunter, and then Brian Burns is twenty eight point two.
So you're kind of looking in that area because in
between those guys, you've got Nick Bosa, Trey Hendrickson, Josh
Heinz Allen, and then you get to Brian Burns.

Speaker 6 (01:45:29):
But my point is like, why can't we just enjoy
Will Anderson on his rookie deal and why do we
immediately have to be going.

Speaker 1 (01:45:35):
To wall You're gonna have to pay this guy, well,
you're gonna have to make.

Speaker 6 (01:45:38):
Him one of the highest paid like it's just and again,
you got so much money invested on all these other pieces,
it just becomes like you and I guess it's the
whole point of the NFL of having parody is you
can't have the best teams, can't have all the best
players and afford them all.

Speaker 1 (01:45:53):
But it's.

Speaker 6 (01:45:55):
I don't know, I mean, like, what are you getting
at there? Are you saying that the Techs are gonna
have to I mean, they have to pay Will Anderson
no matter what, make them one of the highest paid players.

Speaker 5 (01:46:05):
Not that they have to pay him no matter what,
but I think he is somebody that means a lot
in your locker room and is somebody that you brought
here to change the culture of your team and is
productive on the field. I mean, the point that I
feel like I'm making there, Gordy, is that you want
to keep them here. You're probably gonna have to get
into the thirty four to thirty five million dollar range
a season to be able to do that. And you
brought up about paying the quarterback seemingly. I mean, we've

(01:46:28):
seen it now in Kansas City, they paid the quarterback.
What did they finally have to start doing? They said
they had to really rely on the draft. They had
to get really good at finding good free agent fines
that can help your team, and it hurt them in
the skill positions. I mean that first Super Bowl they
lost to Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay dominated them up front
much like we just saw, but you also saw a

(01:46:49):
team that h no Tyreek Hill, no of these other guys. Well,
this is starting to hurt. They did have Tyreek Hill
though for that Tampa Bay one, but you get my point.
They started to have to kind of cut corners a
little bit for some of the other positions that can
really help out their quarterback.

Speaker 1 (01:47:04):
Well, I just don't know where that money. Where that
money's gonna come from.

Speaker 6 (01:47:08):
When you're paying Nico Collins twenty seven million next year,
twenty eight million the year after, you're paying Derek Stingley junior,
you know what, a twenty seven million for the next
four years. Basically, I mean, it's like you start to
lock up these players. Danill Hunter is making thirty one
million next year. Now, you know he may come off
the book, you know, come off the books after that,

(01:47:29):
but it just becomes like you have to be really
some of these guys you just have to wait like, see,
just gonna have to wait. Will Anderson's gonna have to
wait for that money to be freed up because you
just can't have you can't have five Mats deal players
on your roster.

Speaker 1 (01:47:45):
It's just not gonna make sense financially.

Speaker 5 (01:47:46):
Well, I mean, if it comes down to that, that's
when probably you start to see some cuts being made.
I mean, maybe you get to a point where you
like what you've gotten out of Jaden Higgins and Jalen
Knowle that you can look for a trade for Nico
Collins or I mean even Danil Hunter and what his
contract is. I think what he's got a couple of
more years left. I know they just redid his deal

(01:48:07):
this offseason, but I mean he's somebody that could get
to a point that you're like, well, if we're going
to sign Will Anderson Junior, we move this guy on.
I think what this really all comes down to is
next off season. And I understand you're talking about not
rushing to pay guys, but I would probably have to
guess that that is going to be when the Texans

(01:48:28):
put a contract extension in front of CJ. And if
it comes down to, hey, we've got to make a
tough decision. The quarterback is going to win that every time.

Speaker 3 (01:48:34):
You know that.

Speaker 6 (01:48:37):
Yeah, I just I got to see more on a
CJ this year. I mean it's you know, rookie year
was outstanding. Last year was a mixed bag. I get it,
the offensive line one wasn't great. But I need him
to prove to me this year that he is an
upper ustional on top ten quarterback. It's funny all those
lists that come out Dan like after his rookie season,

(01:48:58):
almost you know, almost everybody man had he just drowd
listed as a top ten quarterback in the league, and
you know what they had this offseason, He just drowed
not missing from a lot of those top ten lists
because oh here comes Jayden Daniels, Oh here comes this
guy and that guy, and suddenly they jump them in
our minds. And so to me, CJ, if you want

(01:49:19):
to be paid like a top ten quarterback in the elaitue,
you gotta go play like one this year.

Speaker 5 (01:49:22):
But at the same time, though, Gordy, I mean, we
saw the same thing with Dak where he had a
really good rookie season and then after that the interception
started and people, oh is he an elite quarterback. I
mean it's almost in some ways the old is Joe
Flacco an elite quarterback. I'm not comparing the two. I'm
just saying that we do this all the time with quarterbacks.
And I mean, you know, we played the audio a
couple of months ago from Peyton Manning where he was like, hey,

(01:49:45):
careful saying about a sophomore jinx. The guys won two
playoff games, had a really good rookie season. He's like,
I didn't even want a playoff game until year six,
So let's let's cool it on. You know, these guys
are overrated. These guys are underrated. Kind of deal was
I think his point.

Speaker 6 (01:50:00):
No, I'm just telling you Dak earned it. Dak had
a bunch of four thousand yard passing seasons and a
ton of touchdowns and all that. You know, CJ played
a seventeen game season last year and threw for thirty
seven hundred yards twenty touchdowns of twelve interceptions. I'm sorry,
that's that's like Kirk Cousins numbers Like, that's not that's
not top ten quarterback.

Speaker 5 (01:50:19):
No, Kirk Cousins gets paid. I mean, I do think
you do start seeing teams and Cousins is one of
those guys. I want to say that Matt Ryan kind
of got this started where NFL teams finally looked at
it and said, hey, look, we're not going to overpay
for good. We'll overpay for great, but if you're just
giving us you're a good quarterback, you're kind of middle tier,
We're not going to hamstring our salary cap because of that.

Speaker 6 (01:50:41):
And I'm not saying we're talking about moving on from
Stroud or any of that. I'm just saying, like, what
is the rush to go open up your checkbook and go, look, man,
I know he drafted you, but my god, you are
freaking incredible. We want to overpay for you right now. Like, No,
the whole point of how this thing works is you
draft a guy he's on his rookie deal from for
several years and you and you, you know, it's the

(01:51:03):
whole Russell Wilson thing in Seattle.

Speaker 1 (01:51:05):
Because he was on that rookie deal.

Speaker 6 (01:51:07):
It allowed them to go out and overpay and get
or not overpay, but pay for some big, high price
tag items to build around him.

Speaker 1 (01:51:14):
That's that's the benefit.

Speaker 6 (01:51:15):
So you know, again, I get CJ's agent's gonna be
the one going, hey man, pay my guy now, like, nah,
we're good.

Speaker 1 (01:51:20):
We're gonna wait this thing out.

Speaker 3 (01:51:22):
Well, I mean, here's what's gonna happen. Next year.

Speaker 5 (01:51:24):
You're gonna hear fifth year options been picked up, and
then once they get into the off season for that
fifth year, that's when you're gonna have the contract extension
done for CJ. I mean a lot of this is
to kind of kicking the can down the road at
a certain point. That is how you build an NFL roster.

Speaker 1 (01:51:41):
Well, he's only in year three right now, so I.

Speaker 3 (01:51:44):
Mean, you got you got yourself time.

Speaker 5 (01:51:46):
But you know, as we found out with the Astros, sometimes,
you know, you tell yourself you have time and then
all of a sudden, oh hey we don't have time.

Speaker 3 (01:51:52):
Well now we've got to make a decision. What we're
gonna do.

Speaker 5 (01:51:54):
Ray Memorial see you right there. We're gonna work you
into the conversation. You want to join them as we
continue talking some textans here seven one three, two, one two,
five seven ninety along with getting some of you on
the phone lines, what are the textans actual super Bowl
chances this year? Somebody broke those down and we'll share
it with you. It is the Sean Salisbury Show on
a Friday Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 3 (01:52:16):

Speaker 2 (01:54:00):
I had to live for the Shawn Salisbury Show continued.
Shout out to the pokes fans out there.

Speaker 5 (01:54:17):
There's a lot of Oklahoma State alums here in the
area on a fight song. Friday, Astros beat the Rockies
four to three Christian Walker a couple of homers, including
the eventual game winner. Stros now have a two game
lead on the Mariners in the Al West, with Seattle
being off yesterday. The Angels are next in town for
a four game series over the weekend, and the Cowboys

(01:54:38):
trade Michael Parsons to the Packers for a couple of
first round picks and also defensive tackle Kenny Clark. Parsons
also signing a lucrative extension with Green Bay. Know some
of you want to weigh in on this topic, so
we'll do that right now. Seven one three two one
two five seven ninety Ray and Memorial has been patiently waiting.

Speaker 3 (01:54:56):
Good morning, Ray, Hey, good morning guys.

Speaker 17 (01:54:59):
How you doing good.

Speaker 19 (01:55:02):
I normally call when Shun's in. I just had a
couple of comments. Uh, now hang up, and I want
to see what you guys take on the first one.
Real quick about the Texans, I think they could the
offensive line holds up, they they're going to go as
far as we've ever seen them go in a season.

Speaker 10 (01:55:20):
Uh, and they've looked pretty good.

Speaker 19 (01:55:23):
But if they hold up, then then they're that this
is a really dangerous team because they're good luck trying
to pass on them. But I want to ask about
the situation with Michael Parsons. His agent is David Mullaghetta. Uh,
maybe I'm reaching on this, but this guy has a

(01:55:44):
track working of his clients for some team's hands.

Speaker 1 (01:55:47):
If you can.

Speaker 19 (01:55:48):
Remember that he that Sean did the exact same thing here,
and I believe he had another client that did the
exact same thing. I can't remember who it was, but
he had another client that did the exact same thing
as well. And it's far as to see where I'm
seeing a pattern or a trend with him where he
has clients where they're they're forcing their way out. And
I guess I'll say that because.

Speaker 1 (01:56:10):
C. J.

Speaker 19 (01:56:10):
Straub is one of his clients, and and I don't
want to get to a situation. I know everything is
kind of you know, birds chirping right now with him
in the organization, but I don't I don't want to
get to a situation where it gets kind of rocky
because if David Mullagetto comes in, he had a track
reorcord of his guys just really just just shutting down

(01:56:32):
on their on their teams and forcing their way out.
But now I hang up and listen. I'll see what
you guys have to say about it. You guys have
a great weekend and a great holiday.

Speaker 5 (01:56:40):
They appreciate it. Ray, I mean, I think there's a
couple of things in play there, Gordy. I mean, we
see the same thing and hear the same thing about
Scott Boris with the astros. Oh no, if you've got
a Boris guy, well then eventually you're gonna lose him.

Speaker 3 (01:56:52):
Well not the case.

Speaker 5 (01:56:53):
I mean, you've got Lance McCullers Junior still here, jose
L Tuvey, And I think that's the second part of
this is it's also on the play. I mean, you know,
I've heard players before talk about representation works for you.
You want to be somewhere and that's what's the most
important to you. Well, then it doesn't really matter who
your agent is. Your edict to them is get it done, man,

(01:57:13):
because I'm not going anywhere. Like you're kind of cutting
your legs out from underneath you. In terms of getting
the most money you want, I get all of that,
but that's kind of just the case by case basis,
I think is what this all boils down to with
certain guys represented by certain people.

Speaker 1 (01:57:29):
Well the other part too.

Speaker 6 (01:57:30):
I mean, Mulligeta represents there extingly and they just got
a deal done, you know, and it's you know, and
he's locked up here long term. So yeah, I mean again,
I never want to fault the agents. The agents are
always looking out for well it's twofold.

Speaker 1 (01:57:46):
They're looking.

Speaker 6 (01:57:46):
They're supposed to be looking out for the best interest
of the player, but they're looking. They're trying to get
them the most money, and they're also trying to get
themselves the most money too, So let's not forget that part.

Speaker 1 (01:57:55):
There was a greed factor there.

Speaker 6 (01:57:57):
But you're right, I mean it is all the player
sometimes to say, hey, look, I know it's a couple
bucks less, but taking an account, no sale, no state
tax in Texas, you know, like it is on the
player to say yes, you know. But but you know,
with Scott Boris, from what I've heard with him, is
like he goes, I'll call you when it's done, you know,

(01:58:20):
and it's like you have no idea, as the player,
where the hell you're going. You know, he's gonna get
you the max dollar, but you know, you could be
going from Houston to play for the San Francisco Giants.

Speaker 1 (01:58:29):
You have no idea, and so.

Speaker 6 (01:58:32):
Again I just you know, people always like to pull
the well you can pay him now, you can wait,
and the price is going to go up down the road. Okay,
I'll take that chance, because it's just again rushing to
the table to go pay him. By we talk about
this Germany Paya. People want to I'll pay the man now,
like okay, or let's let this thing play out. He
just made his first All Star game ever, like, let's

(01:58:53):
let's see him repeat that. Let's see if he can
keep doing that. And again for CJ. Strod to go
back to, I want to see to see improvement this year.
I want to see you look more like the rookie CJ.

Speaker 5 (01:59:04):
Stroud Well, I mean, and I get all of that too,
I mean in terms of CJ kind of what Ray
was just talking about there. I mean, can we agree
that last year a lot of his perceived struggles were
not necessarily on him. He didn't help himself at times,
I'll fully give you that, but an inconsistent run game.
You were down a couple of your key receivers at

(01:59:24):
any given point last year in Nico Collins in Tank Dell.
I mean, you had to play Xavier Hutchinson and other guys.
Nothing against them, but they're not the other two guys
that I just mentioned, and an offensive line that was
as bad as they were last year pre snap and
sometimes in snap.

Speaker 6 (01:59:40):
Right, But that's the whole point, is Okay, So you're
telling me we had all these deficiencies in other spots.
You know how, You're not gonna have any money left
to pay those guys if you give one guy, you know,
thirty three percent of your salary cap.

Speaker 1 (01:59:53):
You know, it's like that, that doesn't help the situation.
In fact, it's the other way.

Speaker 6 (01:59:57):
Hey, let me take less money so we can go
ahe get more guys, you know, I know Tom Brady
is always the one that you know, we think of
with that. Hey, I'll take a little bit less if
it means paying some over their guys and making our
team great.

Speaker 1 (02:00:08):
But that's that's few and far between. Nobody thinks that way.

Speaker 5 (02:00:12):
Yeah, well, I mean sometimes you do have to think
that way because it does come down to you got
to fit underneath a certain number. And uh, I mean,
you know when you start making those decisions, that's when
you start having to get creative in other ways with
a roster. I mean we've seen it in the past.
I mean the Texans had to, you know, do this
during the Rick Smith era. And I mean you pay

(02:00:32):
the quarterback usually that's about thirty five forty million right
there that's going to him. So then how you're gonna
make the rest of the money work. And these are
things I guess the Texans have to try to figure
out here in the next couple of years if they
want to keep this current core going. Speaking of the Texans,
just how good can they be this season? Somebody has
an idea and maybe it's a reason why the hype

(02:00:55):
is not as much as it was last year.

Speaker 3 (02:00:57):
At this time we'll discuss it.

Speaker 5 (02:00:59):
Is a Sean Salisbury show closing out at the eight
o'clock hour on a fight song Friday, Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 3 (02:01:05):
Hey, if your.

Speaker 7 (02:01:05):
Current wealth manager isn't hitting it out of the park,
for you to step up to plate with treason wealth, Listen,
if you're at a retirement stage, or you're thinking about retirement,
or you're twenty years away, I would say the closer
you are, the more urgent you should be.

Speaker 3 (02:01:18):
But why not get out in front of it and start.
So this is to everybody.

Speaker 7 (02:01:22):
Make sure your wealth management manager is stepping up and
talking to you about the risk tolerance and for one
k rollover and how much money you're gonna need to
retire and stay retired, all these things that come to fruition.
Are you prepared for downswings for you know, inflation, for
market in all those things, for market, for national debt?

Speaker 3 (02:01:41):
Are you prepared for it? And if you're not, you
need a wealth manager.

Speaker 7 (02:01:45):
And if you are prepared, good, how about somebody who
stands shouldered shoulder with you that can help you extend
that so when you do retire, you don't have to
come out of retirement because well I was forced. I
don't have any money. It's harder to overcome when you're

Speaker 2 (02:02:29):
This is the Sean Salisbury Show and his name is
sure Sean really find Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 5 (02:02:49):
You got to hear this a few times last night
over in third Ward as it is a fight song.
Friday here on the Sean Salisbury Show, Sports Talk seven ninety, Dan, Matthew, Triple.

Speaker 3 (02:03:01):
E, Emmanuel Elmore here with you.

Speaker 5 (02:03:03):
Chris Gordy in for Sean as Sean will be back
when we are back on Tuesday. Of course, you get
a great weekend of Astros baseball. They get the Angels
in town as they take down the Colorado Rockies four
to three yesterday, take two out of three in that series.
College football getting going tomorrow as it even started last night.

(02:03:24):
These guys you of h taken down SFA twenty seven
to nothing. You'll get Texas at Ohio State ten am
tomorrow morning right here on Sports Talk seven to ninety
and then LSU Clemson over on KPRC nine to fifty
coming your way at five thirty. But talking Texans right now,
Gordy and Bobby barak Is with out kick and he

(02:03:45):
put together which NFL teams can actually win the Super
Bowl this season? And this was after the Cowboys had
made the Micah Parsons trade. And he broke it down
into different categories in the bubble, out side the bubble,
or in this case, just outside the bubble, and the
final one could sneak into the bubble.

Speaker 3 (02:04:07):
In the bubble. Five teams that right now, far and.

Speaker 5 (02:04:10):
Away the best teams, the best competitors out there to
have a chance, our guest, best contenders out there to
have a chance to win a Super Bowl this year. Eagles, Chiefs, Bills, Ravens,
and Lions. No real argument there, I would assume, No,
that's a good loss. Yeah, So you've got those guys
right there just outside the bubble. Two teams Packers and Rams.

Speaker 10 (02:04:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (02:04:37):
Rams, I'm still I mean, I guess they have good
run game, decent quarterback play, good defense.

Speaker 1 (02:04:45):
Yeah, I probably put them both there.

Speaker 5 (02:04:46):
Well, But I mean I also think that the wildcard
with the Rams is Matthew Stafford. I mean, what's he
going to be this season? And is that back going
to hold up for him, because if it's Jimmy Garoppolo
out there, then no, I'm not buying the Rams. But
if it's a healthy Matt Stafford, then sure you've got
a chance. I just I'm not so sure that that's
gonna be the case even next week.

Speaker 6 (02:05:09):
Yeah, and that's that's the thing you open with these
guys in their house, you know, I don't know. We'll see,
We'll see how the Texans match up with them. But
you haven't mentioned the Texans yet, So what group are
they in?

Speaker 5 (02:05:21):
They are in they could sneak into the bubble and
in parentheses if everything breaks right, the Commanders, Bengals, Texans,
forty nine Ers, Chargers, Broncos, Vikings, and Steelers. So last
year people were pointing it to the Texans being a
team that was primed to be able to make a
run throughout the AFC, and they pretty much did what

(02:05:43):
they did the year previous. It's just they had the expectations,
so people looked at it as a failure.

Speaker 14 (02:05:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (02:05:52):
I don't know, man, it's did we know this division
is still gonna suck though, right? Like so, you feel
like at minimum splitting with the Jacksonville's, the Tennessee's, the
Indianapolis is, and you know some of those probably going
two and oh one. And then it's just about weather
in the storm of the rest of the schedule.

Speaker 1 (02:06:10):
And you know, San.

Speaker 6 (02:06:13):
Francisco is gonna be as good as they were you know,
or have been as Denver gonna be as good as
they were last year. The toughest battles are at Baltimore
and at Kansas City get Buffalo at home. So I
don't know, I would I would me personally, I'd put
the Texans in the category with the Rams and the
and the Packers.

Speaker 5 (02:06:33):
Well, and it's funny you say that about the Texans
because Barack Riots Texans also have the pieces.

Speaker 3 (02:06:37):
But the offensive line is a question.

Speaker 10 (02:06:39):
C J.

Speaker 5 (02:06:39):
Stroud took a step backward last year. So again see
there's that narrative again about c J.

Speaker 3 (02:06:45):
Stroud.

Speaker 6 (02:06:48):
Well again he's got to go prove it, though, I mean,
we can, we can bitch you complain about the offensive line.
They have overhauled this offensive line. And I had Sean
last week. I said, I says this, can you say
definitively this offensive line is better than last year's?

Speaker 1 (02:07:03):
He said yes.

Speaker 6 (02:07:04):
So if the offensive line is better, and he got
some some more pass catching weapons. Again, I would have
liked another year out of Stefan Diggs, but I won't
go down that route again. You have Dinko Collins's hands
down a top five receiver in the league. You know,
to me, it's all about the run game and what
is Nick Chubb? Can Nick Chubb play like the Nick
Chubb of three four years ago?

Speaker 1 (02:07:26):
Or is he aged and washed and this run game
is going to be non existent again?

Speaker 5 (02:07:30):
See with the offensive line, I mean, I understand that
losing Laramie Tonsel, one of the best left tackles in
the game. You're like, all right, you know what's that
going to mean for the rest of the group. I mean,
I hope that you have upgraded at right guard over
Shaq Mason. I hope that you have upgraded at right tackle,
where it seems like that's where Titus Howard's going to be.
And I mean then it comes down to center and

(02:07:51):
left guard. What do you have at those spots that
make you necessarily believe this group's going to be better.

Speaker 6 (02:07:59):
That's I gotta see it. I mean, that's that's what
we got. We gotta see when they get out there.
But I mean, Hi, how much does it speak Dan,
When Kenyan Green was supposed to be a starter for you,
was a first round pick. You trade him to the
Eagles and he gets cut in the same offseason, like
he's that bad. So yeah, again, I'm not blaming CJ
for the for the bad offensive line, but they got

(02:08:22):
to get this thing righted well.

Speaker 5 (02:08:24):
I mean, and I think that a little bit of
that too is there's no perfect player, and there's no
you know, just guarantee that a guy is going to
work out. Look, you draft a guy, sometimes you miss.
The Texans missed with Kenyan Green.

Speaker 3 (02:08:35):
What did they do well?

Speaker 5 (02:08:36):
They tried to make the best for it and send
him on his way. And I mean, I think injuries
have also hurt him to a certain point. But all
of that goes into the evaluation. All that's part of it.

Speaker 6 (02:08:48):
So yeah, and and but again, you know, we got
to give Casario for all his roses he gets, for
the good moves he's made. We can't forget the Kenyan
Greens and pieces like that. I mean, that's a wasted
first round pick.

Speaker 3 (02:08:59):
It just now for sure.

Speaker 5 (02:09:01):
So we'll see if the Texans are able to make
a marked improvement on the offensive line this year. And
if they are and they're able to run the football, well,
then you probably feel better about this team this year.

Speaker 3 (02:09:12):
Let's get back into the.

Speaker 5 (02:09:13):
Astros conversation here as we start the nine o'clock hour,
because there is a very simple expectation for this team
and I don't think there is any wavering allowed on this.
We'll discuss that as we get into the nine o'clock hour,
but first, talk about it all.

Speaker 3 (02:09:29):
The time, me and Sean do.

Speaker 5 (02:09:30):
Well, today it's just me talking to you because well
we're getting the nine. You're about to settle in at
your desk. The workday is about to start. Maybe a
stop you got a colatchi or something on the way. Well,
a couple of hours from now, it's going to be
somebody coming to your desk and saying, hey, man, what's
for lunch? Well, the answer it's Jbar and Barbecue twenty
two oh one Leland Street right there in Edo. All

(02:09:52):
the parking you can ask for you're walking in. Maybe
that buddy that came and asked you for lunch, well
they're going there for the first time and they say, hey,
this was easy to park here. Man, smells great already.
What's that over there that the right Oh, that's the
beer garden. You go inside. Oh hey, what's that right there?
That's a full service bar that you have. And you
see all the TVs and you're looking around and you're like, man,

(02:10:12):
this would be great for a college football Saturday. I'm
right down the street from dyk In Park, right around
the corner from Toyota Center. Man, imagine the pregame meals
that I could have here at Jbarm Barbecue.

Speaker 3 (02:10:24):
And I've mentioned all of that.

Speaker 5 (02:10:25):
I hadn't even mentioned the brisket it's elite, The jalapeno cheddar, sausage,
same deal, the pork ribs, the sides, everything, and you
hear Sean talk about.

Speaker 3 (02:10:33):
It all the time.

Speaker 5 (02:10:34):
You want to eat like Joe Aspota, you can get
the Joe Aspota plate. You want to eat like Kelvin Samson,
same deal there, Clyde Drexler, all of them available for you.
And maybe even at today or any day you're not
feeling barbecue per se, but maybe that brisket burger on
the menu that sounds good. You got a couple of
other people at the table, and everybody's saying, man, we're
really hungry. How about some of those pretzel bites with

(02:10:55):
that queso dip to dip it into. You've got all
of that I mentioned, the full service bar and the
beer garden. I know it doesn't feel like it right now,
but soon enough the tempts will cool down a little
bit and it's going to be patio season around here.
And Jbarm Barbecue is the spot to be able to
enjoy the beautiful weather, the great.

Speaker 3 (02:11:12):
Food, and all the great drink.

Speaker 5 (02:11:13):
Right over there at twenty two oh one Leland Street,
It's jbar M Barbecue. J bar M Barbecue right there
in edoh twenty two to one Leland Street.

Sewn Salisbury.

Speaker 1 (02:12:13):
To USC trouves, longtime friend Shawn Salisbury.

Speaker 2 (02:12:16):
Dan, MATTHEWSCU, Jesus, this is the Shawn Salisbury Show.

Speaker 5 (02:12:25):
In for Shawn Salisbury as Sean will be back on
Tuesday when we come back to you at six am
that day after the Great Labor Day weekend. Hopefully, if
you're heading into the weekend, do so safely and also
keep it right here. Sports Talk seven nineties you'll have
the Strows all weekend right here. And also tomorrow morning

(02:12:45):
ten am, you're gonna have Texas taking on Ohio. State
coverage gets going then on Sports Talk seven ninety LSU
and Clemson tomorrow night there in South Carolina and the
Battle of the Tigers going to start at five point
thirty Over on KPRC nine fifty. They mentioned the Astros
Gordy four to three winners yesterday to take the series
over the Rockies, And that is a key component of

(02:13:08):
what we're going to talk about here, because I mentioned it,
this ten game homestand that you have with three against
the Rockies, four against the Angels and then three against
the Yankees to close things out next week where you're
getting to a point it's a two game lead on
the Mariners in the West at the moment, where we've
said this numerous times, when under five hundred teams come

(02:13:29):
into dyk In Park, that is when the Astros have
to be able to try to take advantage of that
part of their schedule.

Speaker 3 (02:13:35):
They've not been able to for the most part. After
the loss on Tuesday.

Speaker 5 (02:13:38):
Night, they were thirty seven and thirty three against teams
under five hundred. Well, obviously they won these last couple
of days, so now they're thirty nine and thirty three.
But that's seemingly been an issue for the Astros and
if they are going to accomplish their ultimate goal, that
has to improve.

Speaker 1 (02:13:56):
It does.

Speaker 6 (02:13:56):
And by the way, while we're talking to Astros, let
me bring something up real quick. The amount of people
I saw on social media that were losing their ever
loving minds because Jordan Alvarez got a day off yesterday.

Speaker 1 (02:14:08):
Like, what are we doing here, folks? He had the
hand injury, he missed all that time.

Speaker 6 (02:14:14):
He you know, just started making rehap starts a week
ago played in Corpus took a day off and then
played in back to back games for the first time,
and then comes back to the Astros plays in back
to back games. What was that Tuesday Wednesday? And they
give him Thursday off. It was his first time playing

(02:14:35):
back to back games at the big league level. They
weren't gonna go back to back to back. Hey, you
know it's you gotta be careful with this thing. Still
give him a day off and he'll be back in
the lineup tonight. But I saw people saying this is
his crunch, tob We're we're in a division ratio. We
can't give a guys days off, And I'm just like,
good God, Like it's it ain't that serious, folks. You

(02:14:58):
know what, you're gonna hate more when Jordon's hand flares
up again and he's got to miss the rest of
the stride the rest of the season. Like that's where
I'm like, just relaxed the coaches staff and the draining staff.
Let them handle this thing appropriately, and guys are gonna
get days off.

Speaker 1 (02:15:13):
And oh, by the way, it was the Colorado Rockies.

Speaker 6 (02:15:16):
If you can't beat them without Jordon, then maybe you
shouldn't deserve to be a playoff team, and by the way,
they did beat them yesterday.

Speaker 3 (02:15:21):
Well, and it's also where have you been?

Speaker 5 (02:15:23):
I mean, it's it's something that you needed to expect
was going to be the case with Jordon, is that
he'd be a couple of days on a day off
and then right back at it. But at the same time,
a couple of weeks ago, we had Dana Brown on
and he was talking about that twenty five to twenty
game stretch that you're gonna have. I mean, that's why
they're giving the guys off days now, because they anticipate

(02:15:44):
they're going to be in a sprint to the finish.

Speaker 6 (02:15:47):
But it's just like of any person, and I get,
you know, we still get the people who are like,
why's Pinion not playing? It's like it's a day off, relax.
But like for Jordon, I think it's pretty self explanatory.
The dude just came back, played multiple days in a
row and they want to give a day off like relax.
People are just they lose their minds when people get break.

(02:16:07):
I mean this has been going on since a j Hinch.
They give guys days off and yet every single time,
without fail, when the lineup comes out, what do people
immediately jump to, where's Altuve?

Speaker 1 (02:16:17):
Was he not playing? I get it all.

Speaker 6 (02:16:20):
We all think like Nolan Ryan old school, like, why
are you taking a day off? You should play every day?
You know, every picture should throw nine innings. I mean
that's goneer those days.

Speaker 5 (02:16:30):
Well, I mean, and that's the funny that you bring
up aj Hinch, because that's been one of my theories, Gordy,
is they fire Dana crowd, the fire Joe Aspota crowd
is those are the people who if you push them
hard enough on it, they will eventually admit, well, yeah,
I miss Jeff Luno and I miss aj Hinch.

Speaker 6 (02:16:51):
Well my favorite is when they they win like five
games in a row and then they lose one, and
then I see tweets fire the manager or even better,
fire the coach. The people still called Joe a spot
of the coach. I don't think this coach is doing
a good job. Okay, maybe you should go back to
watching high school baseball. But yeah, it's just again relaxed

(02:17:12):
people like it's just amazing how many people jump to
that where it's like, why.

Speaker 1 (02:17:16):
Isn't this guy playing?

Speaker 6 (02:17:17):
I mean, we were in a division race here, we'll
get thirty thirty games left. Like, why you're not getting
the day off because you want them for the playoffs.
You don't want Tom having a thing flare up again.

Speaker 5 (02:17:27):
Well, I mean I have been one of those guys
though too, with some of these days off that I
just don't get.

Speaker 3 (02:17:31):
I mean, I guess now that you know we've gone
through the hand injurw with Jordan.

Speaker 5 (02:17:35):
I remember there was one earlier in the season where
they had a chance to beat the Cardinals in this series,
and they had an off day the following day, and
they gave him the day off, And I'm like, why
he just had a home run the night before, Like
it seems like he's starting to get going. Give him
a chance. But then again, I mean it seems like
you know, they knew at the time that something was up.
They were just kind of trying to bide their time
at that point. But I mean I get the frustration too,

(02:17:59):
where Jeremy Pin, even though he has been struggling at
the plate lately, you give him a day off. You're like, well,
we can't be doing this right now. Carlos Korea, same deal, struggling,
but you don't want him out of the lineup jose
L tub Though, I will say this, I don't think
people yesterday with that home run were complaining about getting
Tuesday night off.

Speaker 1 (02:18:17):
Right.

Speaker 6 (02:18:18):
Yeah, again, it's it's about keeping these guys fresh. And
by the way, they have depth now, I mean with
Ramon Urius and you know, to bond in his flexibility,
like you can move guys around and wait till you
get wait till you get Jack Myers back here. I mean,
it's gonna help things out even more.

Speaker 5 (02:18:37):
Well, it was Wednesday night is when al Tuove had
the night off. But still, I mean we've seen that
at times too, where guys struggling give him a chance
to kind of collect his thoughts and then get him
back into the following day. We've seen it a bunch
this year with cam Smith. He hits the home run
on Wednesday night and has the nice assist yesterday, so
trying to get him going to But what this ten
game series all boils down to is the first three.

(02:18:59):
You're two and one in them. All right, that's great.
I mentioned it earlier, Gordy, the way that the Angels have,
you know, faltered down the stretch. I don't think that
it's too much to ask this team to go out
and take three out of four in this series. I
mean again, it's it's the golf example that me and
Sean bring up all the time, about the par fives,
the par three's, the par four's, all of that in

(02:19:19):
the birdiea bull holes.

Speaker 3 (02:19:20):
You've got to be able to do it. This is
one that you should be able to pull off an
eagle on.

Speaker 6 (02:19:25):
Dude, with the way this pitching staff's been, I'm I'm
saying go to and two. I mean, if if you
can do better than that, awesome. But I can't say
go take three out of four when you've got Javier
going tonight, which you have no idea what you're getting
from him, Eric Getty going tomorrow, which you have no
idea what you get from him, and then Monday it's
the TBA. I mean, I feel good about Hunter Brown

(02:19:48):
going Sunday, but I felt good about Hunter Brown going
the other night and that did not go well against
the Colorado Rockies of all teams, So you can't assume anything.

Speaker 1 (02:19:58):
Three Asking three out of four is a big ask.
I'm gonna say at least split well.

Speaker 5 (02:20:03):
I mean, and that is true. I mean, the assuming
with this team I mean going into that Dodgers series.
Remember we had talked about it, well, Salvage, that would
be fine, and then they go out there and sweep.
But then they come right back home and you got
the Guardians and it's like, oh, they've lost ten in
a row. They sweep you like it's seriously, this season
much more than any other that I can remember, Gordy
just makes zero sense.

Speaker 6 (02:20:24):
Yeah, when you go I mean July fourth weekend, you
go at the Dodger Stadium, ailing Lance McCullers have been terrible,
and you go out there.

Speaker 1 (02:20:31):
And the Bats erupting, you sweep them.

Speaker 6 (02:20:33):
I mean, it's just no, yeah, it's it's expecting unexpected
Astros twenty twenty five, No.

Speaker 2 (02:20:38):
It is.

Speaker 5 (02:20:38):
And tonight you'd really like to see Christian Javier have
a bounce back performance. Tyler Anderson has been tough on
them in the past, but I mean you'd like for
them to be able to get after him to night.
Only two wins this season that I see out of Anderson,
so I mean struggling a little bit.

Speaker 1 (02:20:53):
At one of those go ahead. One of those was
against the Astros.

Speaker 6 (02:20:57):
In fact, both of those came in back to back
starts in April, his third and fourth starts of the season.
He went five and two third shutout innings against the Astros,
gave up just one hit, no runs, four walks, six strikeouts,
and then six days later pitched the six six shutout
innings against the Giants and he won that one. Those

(02:21:18):
are his two wins on the season. He has not
won a game since April eighteenth. Now, the Angels have
won some games and he started. But in terms of
getting a decision, yeah, I mean, this is a dude,
that you're back, and your lineup, by the way, is
better now than it was back in April. You have
carls kra you have Azus Sanchez, Like this is a

(02:21:38):
this is a night where you should go score some
runs on Tyler Anderson.

Speaker 5 (02:21:41):
And you'redon in Chaz though really like hitting up against them,
So I mean you got that going for you.

Speaker 1 (02:21:47):
Yeap unleash the beast. I'm a caller, And now Jordan
hits a home run tonight. Oh okay.

Speaker 5 (02:21:52):
The Gordy guarantee, I like it. I mean, when you
get a Gordy guarantee, you can take it to the banks.
So we'll definitely be keeping Gordon up to date. And
keeping tabs on if that happens tonight. So Astros and
Angels fire up a four game series tonight over at
Dyke and Park again, six o'clock, Astros on deck. It's
gonna be Adam Wexler bringing you the Astros on deck,

(02:22:13):
and then I will be with you on the tenth
Inning show. So appreciate Wes for us stepping in to
do that. Let's continue the Astros conversation because what was
once thought to be doom and gloom with the Astros,
all of a sudden, this guy has made it into
a real bright spot. We'll discuss that here as it
is a Friday on the Sean Salisbury Show, Sports Talk

(02:22:35):
seven to ninety.

Speaker 7 (02:22:36):
I am a dip guy, you say, Shaan will kind Well,
I can tell you what kind of dip. Daisy French
onion dip and the daisy ranch dip.

Speaker 1 (02:22:45):
Now I am.

Speaker 7 (02:22:45):
I'm like the finger food appetizer chips, you know, throw
a fredo in their chips to get the dips. Sometimes
to the point on college game day or during Saturdays
studies get up with the spread. It always has the
daisy French onion dip or the daisy ranch tip was
in the local grocery store over the weekend picking it up.
And why because well the other foods find and dandy

(02:23:06):
later in the day, but in order to get you through.

Speaker 3 (02:23:08):
And don't you do it on holidays too, You do
it on Labor Day, you do it on holidays. You
do it sports and it's sports season.

Speaker 7 (02:23:14):
This is daisy French onion dip and ranch dip time
of year, right and now it comes out with this
delicious French onion dip. As an obsession of mine, they
are delicious as homemade dip. You can add whatever you
want to be. You won't need to because they got
the real erbs and spices and the other ingredients you'd
find in your own kitchen.

Speaker 3 (02:23:31):
But they're doing it for you.

Speaker 7 (02:23:32):
Pop on into your local grocery store and find out
what I already know and have known and am.

Speaker 3 (02:23:38):
Grateful to be part of this where I get to well.

Speaker 7 (02:23:41):
Spend my college football Saturday and Sundays or any other
day of the week doing what really is the strength
of a meal, my chips and dips, and it's daisy
French onion dip and daisy ranch dip. I can go
to myfrigerator and take a picture. You'll see it now,
visualize it, and then go out and do it. Get
to your local grocery store and look for Daisy French

(02:24:02):
onion dip at a grocery store near you.

Speaker 2 (02:24:07):
The Jean Salisbury Show continues.

Speaker 5 (02:24:22):
Sean Salisbury Show on a fight song Friday. Sports Talk
seven ninety Astros back to action tonight against the Angels.

Speaker 3 (02:24:30):
After beating the Rockies yesterday four to three.

Speaker 5 (02:24:33):
Christian Walker a couple of homers in that one, including
the eventual game winner. They're also two games up on
the Mariners with Seattle being off last night, so the
Astros furthering their lead in the Al West. Cowboys trade
Michael Parsons to the Packers two first round picks, defensive
tackle Kenny Clark coming back in return, and Parsons also
signs a very nice extension with Green Bay. Talking Astros

(02:24:55):
right now, though, if you want to get in seven
one three two one two five seven ninety and someone
three two one two five seven nine zero, Gordy, are
you aware of just how good Brian abray you has
been in the month of August.

Speaker 1 (02:25:10):
Oh, yeah, he's been. He's been awesome.

Speaker 6 (02:25:12):
And what for four saves in the last two weeks
taken over that closer role. It's not even just August,
It's it's all season. He's been lights out.

Speaker 3 (02:25:22):
No, he definitely has.

Speaker 5 (02:25:23):
And the last time he gave up an earned run,
which hopefully I didn't just mush him, was against the
Nationals on July twenty ninth. Ever since then, his last
twelve appearances scoreless. In thirteen innings, he's only given up
five hits, he's only walked three, and during that time
he has struck out seventeen.

Speaker 6 (02:25:42):
Well, he's given up ten runs on the season, and
I feel like he pitches every other night.

Speaker 1 (02:25:47):
I mean somely throughlievers. We have run into the ground.

Speaker 6 (02:25:51):
I mean dudes that have pitched like twenty feels like
twenty times a month, they're running out there. But no,
he's been he's been awesome. And you were a little
worried and how he was gonna, you know, shift into
this closer role because it is a different mentality going
from an eighth inning guy to a ninth inning guy.
And he's had a couple, you know, giving up a
couple of hits here there, gave up a hit last night,

(02:26:12):
but no, uh, no harm, no foul, getting the job done.

Speaker 5 (02:26:16):
Well, and I don't want to, you know, send you
into a rage too much, because I mean, with how
good he has been in the closer role since taking
it over, and how good he has been really all
throughout this entire season. Is there may be a part
three years left on that deal with Josh Hater If
somebody over the offseason says, hey, Dana, what do you
think about moving off that closer right there?

Speaker 3 (02:26:37):
You know we we kind of like him a little bit,
or or even or even for Brian to bray you.

Speaker 6 (02:26:43):
No, you have two awesome dudes. Stop trying to get
rid of them. I want both of them.

Speaker 1 (02:26:48):
Keep them well, I'm not trying to get rid of
the money.

Speaker 5 (02:26:50):
I'm see see there it is tripley. I knew that
the rage was going to fire up right there, and
he he didn't disappoint. But no, I mean I think
that it is going to be something for a Brae
once it gets time for him to, you know, bed
his deal. He is going to get huge money just
for how good he's been, not only this season, but
I mean how good he was during the World Series

(02:27:11):
run in twenty twenty two. And this is a guy
to Gordy that when remember when he came up. What
he broke in nineteen is that when he finally got
his chance with the Astros. I'm trying to remember exactly
when it was. It was somewhere around there, but when
he first came up, the thing with him was, ye, yeah,
it was man, if this guy can find the strike
zone with the stuff that he's got, because you saw

(02:27:32):
the fastball, you saw the slider, that was the problem.
He couldn't find the strike zone. Now he's found the
strike zone and he's lived up to those expectations.

Speaker 6 (02:27:41):
Yeah, and and more more than that too, I mean,
and then some. I mean, his his era right now
is down to one forty seven. That's the lowest it's
been since May nineteenth of this year. So he's he's
hitting a stride. He's you know, pitching super super well
that closer right now, and so you hope that he

(02:28:02):
continues this. And again it's it just shows, I mean,
this team would be so like we just didn't have
to worry for so much of the season about the
eighth and the ninth inning having a break and having
hater in there.

Speaker 1 (02:28:13):
Now you know it is a concern from a standpoint.

Speaker 6 (02:28:17):
You just had a month from now when you're heading
into the postseason, you know, who is that eighth inning
guy who is going to be that guy that that
I can trust? And yesterday they used Brian King, But
I don't know, it feels like they're not you know,
that they may not even commit to a guy that.
Sometimes it'll be Caleb Ort, sometimes it'll be Brian King.
You know, Bennett Sussa was kind of earning that role
and then he got hurt. So that they're getting it

(02:28:39):
done these guys overall, they're getting it done.

Speaker 5 (02:28:42):
Well point six y two whip for the month of
August point nine to eight overall. So I know that's
one of those more advanced metrics numbers. And I defer
to Ross when it comes to the advanced metrics because
he is that guy. Apparently a whip around one is
great for those high leverage guys.

Speaker 6 (02:29:02):
Yeah, yeah, I defer to Ross on any of those
XB plus plus stats and all that.

Speaker 1 (02:29:09):
I don't I don't even know what half that stuff is.

Speaker 3 (02:29:12):
Yeah, well, it is one of those whips.

Speaker 1 (02:29:16):
I'm just saying, those those super advanced patricks.

Speaker 5 (02:29:18):
Well, I know, I mean, you know, I'm one of
those two that you know, I'll still use batting average,
and then of course I'll get a tweet, Oh it's
an antiquated stat. Well, no, I mean I think a
guy still hitting over three hundred is a really good hitter.
And I understand, you know, ops and all the other things.
I'm not against any of that stuff. And clearly it
works because I mean, you know, the Astro is able
to put together a good roster that can be able

(02:29:40):
to you know, you know, put up the results they
have and the wins they have.

Speaker 3 (02:29:44):
But I mean, you know, it's also too a little
bit of the old school works too.

Speaker 6 (02:29:49):
Can I can I give you this too, Dan, The
fact that the Astros, I mean we're talking literally about
a month away from the from the postseason. In fact,
a month from yesterday is their season finale, ironically against
this very Angels team. We'll see this Angels team again
to finish off the regular season out there on the
West Coast. I'm just thinking that too. That's gonna suck

(02:30:11):
if they if they clinched the Vision, their last six games.

Speaker 1 (02:30:15):
Are on the road and three and where's where's the
A's point now?

Speaker 6 (02:30:18):
Sacramento three and Sacramento and then three in Anaheim and
uh yeah, I mean if they're gonna have a big
clubhouse celebration popping.

Speaker 1 (02:30:27):
Bottles, it'll end up being out there.

Speaker 6 (02:30:30):
But as we near the playoffs, do you know that
temp's are supposed to drop a week from today as
of right now, and the forecast could change. We are
a high of ninety eight today, Dan, do you realize
a week from today projected loads of sixty nine degrees?

Speaker 5 (02:30:48):
Well maybe they might finally open up that that that
roof at Dykan was it the roof being opened or
the roof being closed against Aaron Boone that he got
he turned into Karen Boone about it?

Speaker 1 (02:31:00):
Oh yeah, because the wind changed everything.

Speaker 6 (02:31:05):
But but no, I mean mcculors and a lot of
the players have voiced their displeasure over the years. They
don't they don't like the roof open. They like it close.
So I will put that at a We'll put it
a two percent chance. They're just they're not opening the
roof for the regular season games.

Speaker 5 (02:31:21):
I mean, look a couple of times a year do it, Like,
why do you have a roof if you're not going
to use it?

Speaker 6 (02:31:27):
You know those people they call them what do they
call them? Season ticket holders and they all sit in
those big, big, fat expensive seats behind home plate called
the Diamond Club. A lot of them prefer the AC
and the closed roof. So you know what, if that
the big the big money people are saying keep it close,
they're keeping it close.

Speaker 5 (02:31:43):
Well, I mean, because that is true where major League
Baseball finally comes in. What during the World Series or whatever.
Now I have the roof open, We've got we've got
the blimp flying overhead. We got to get those overhead shots.

Speaker 1 (02:31:55):
Well on top of it.

Speaker 6 (02:31:56):
It's like, you know, I think one of those times
they did it, like the Astros were playing well, they
opened the roof and then the bats went cold, and
then balls were flying out for the other team, and
it was like, all right, don't ever open the damn
roof again.

Speaker 3 (02:32:08):
Yeah, maybe that's it, man.

Speaker 5 (02:32:10):
It is one of those things like if something bad happens,
like for some sort of gimmick or like you know,
a team wore certain jerseys, they're like, don't wear those
jerseys anymore. And maybe maybe that's what it is. Maybe
it was, Hey, last time we opened the roof, it
didn't really go well for us, So let's go ahead
and keep this thing closed.

Speaker 6 (02:32:25):
Baseball is superstitious. There is the reason why they like
to wear the orange so much. They want a world
serious in the orange, so they like to wear the orange.

Speaker 3 (02:32:31):
Salient point for sure.

Speaker 5 (02:32:33):
All right, let's get back into some college football, because
if I've mentioned, we'll have on our family of stations
tomorrow LSU and Clemson a man who knows a lot
about one of those programs, Matt moscona ESPN one oh
four to five in Baton Rouge.

Speaker 3 (02:32:47):
We've had him on before.

Speaker 5 (02:32:47):
We'll have them on again as we'll get into some
college football with him right here on the Seawn Salisbury
Show Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 3 (02:32:55):
Hey Sean here.

Speaker 7 (02:32:55):
And I asked the DNM leasing executive the other day,
who is your ideal customers that someone who writes checks
for ultra luxury cars and is having second thoughts about
that depreciation. Is it someone who trades away three years,
constantly accumulating negative equity while making higher payments every time,
or is it a budget conscious customer looking to say
forty to fifty percent in monthly payments with reasonable terms.

(02:33:18):
His answer was, it's all of them and more white
glove concierge experience at less costs, luxury suv, sports cars,
pickup trucks, family sedans. We do it all at DNM Leasing.
With fifty thousand active customers. We have the program for you,
and our experts currently are on standby all of them.
Leasing is not renting, it's the smarter option for most.

(02:33:38):
If you've listened to us for all these years, you
have not reached out, It's time you call now. Dial
seven one three two nine zero one thousand. That's seven
one three two nine zero one thousand or dmoudoleasing dot com.

Speaker 2 (02:33:51):
And the Sean Salisbury Show continues.

Speaker 3 (02:34:03):
Gordy, let it wash over you here.

Speaker 5 (02:34:07):
It's Feliz and just know that this time tomorrow we're
getting ready for college football. As we're talking at right
now here on the Seawn Salisbury Show, Sports Talk seven ninety,
Chris Gordy in for Sean Triple, Emmanuel Elmore, Dan Matthews,
hanging out with you. Astros four three winners yesterday over
the Rockies are gonna get the Angels in for a

(02:34:28):
four game series and the Horn is gonna take on
Ohio State tomorrow. You get that right here, Sports Talk
seven ninety starting at ten am. And then the team
that we're gonna be talking about right now with this guy,
Matt Moscona ESPN one O four to five in Baton Rouge,
LSU taking on Clemson over on KPRC nine at fifty.
That's gonna start at five point thirty as he is

(02:34:50):
the afternoon host on ESPN one O four to five.
They are in Baton Rouge, Matt Moscona joining us and scone.
Appreciate it, buddy. All right, I'm gonna give you the
good scenario and the doomsday scenario. LSU wins tomorrow night.
What is the reaction to Brian Kelly if they lose
tomorrow night?

Speaker 3 (02:35:08):
Same deal?

Speaker 20 (02:35:10):
Well, they lose, I guess it'll probably depend on what
his reaction is in the postgame press conferences he slamming
tables again.

Speaker 17 (02:35:18):
I mean that certainly went viral a year ago.

Speaker 20 (02:35:21):
If they win, I think the national awareness of LSU
starts to shift to Okay, they're a legitimate national championship contender.
If they're able to go on the road at Clemson,
which returns more production than any team in college football
we all know is a playoff team a year ago.
If ls who goes and wins this game, they put

(02:35:43):
the nation on alert that they are a national championship contender,
and you know, after tomorrow, guys, I think they'll be
favored in every game they play except the road game
at Alabama, and who knows what that may look like
by the time you get to November. But lshu's a
really talented team. I think they got enough talent to
beat anybody on their schedule this year. The question is
how quickly can it assimilate? And obviously for Brian Kelly

(02:36:05):
and the staff, they're hoping it's it's tomorrow night in Clemson.

Speaker 1 (02:36:08):
It's gonna help me out here with this story.

Speaker 6 (02:36:11):
You know, we we know LSU went and spent a
ton out in the transfer portal and one of the
big pieces they got was from a guy right here
in our backyard here in Houston, a safety named aj Halsey,
who had a really nice season four the Koogs last year.
He comes over to LSU. We've heard nothing but great
things about him all off season. Yet last night a
story pops up that reminds us of that December first

(02:36:33):
game of last year when U of H lost at BYU.

Speaker 1 (02:36:38):
In the final minutes.

Speaker 6 (02:36:40):
BYU scores you know, another touchdown late aj Halsey gets
into a spat, throws some punches, gets ejected. Nobody's thought
twice about that place since it happened, Yet yesterday the
NCAA steps in and goes, oh yeah, because of that,
he suspended for the first half of the game against
Clemson on Saturday. I think it's absolutely bonkers that this
hasn't come up been talked about that LSU's coaches, I guess,

(02:37:04):
didn't seem to know about it, but also seems a
little bit bushleague that it seems like Clemson's the one
that alerted the NCAA about this forty eight hours before kickoff.

Speaker 20 (02:37:14):
Yeah, the other piece that we know. So I think
there's two pieces of this, like where two things can
be true at the same time. One is that look
at the NCAA rule book.

Speaker 14 (02:37:22):
The rule is the rule.

Speaker 20 (02:37:23):
AJ Halsey should be suspended for the first half. I
mean the rule is black and white. He was ejected
for fighting that carries a half one half suspension. If
it happened in the second half of the game, which
it did, like he should be suspended.

Speaker 17 (02:37:36):
That's black and white. There is no argument.

Speaker 20 (02:37:39):
The other part of this that's also true is the
fact that this came out LSU was first alerted the
Wednesday before the game from somebody that happened in December,
eight months ago, nine months ago, is patently absurd. What
we've learned is is that the NCAA wrote a formal

(02:38:03):
letter to Houston back in December notifying them of the suspension.

Speaker 17 (02:38:09):
Well, obviously A. J. Halsey transferred out of.

Speaker 20 (02:38:11):
Houston, Apparently the NCAA did not then in turn alert LSU.
The report from Pete Famil also suggested that Houston did
not alert AJ Halsey. So I don't know that it
is their responsibility. I'm not pointing fingers or it's I
think the what I would have probably liked to have

(02:38:33):
seen done was the NCAA alert LSU when AJ Halsey
transferred to LSU.

Speaker 17 (02:38:38):
That clearly didn't happen.

Speaker 20 (02:38:40):
We over at Louisiana Sports One that did reach an
LSU spokesperson who did confirm before Brian Kelly's press conference
that Wednesday was the first LSU was aware of it,
Wednesday was the first the SEC was aware of it,
and that it was in fact Clemson who alerted the
NCAA of the issue, which tells me somebody at Houston
probably knew someone at Clemson. You said, Hey, y'all may

(02:39:03):
want to be aware of this, and I guess Clemson
sat on it until game week, which I agree is
bush league. Again, there's no there's no argument about Halsey
sitting out. The problem is how this thing and this
thing played out, and guys probably the next question, but
this is really significant.

Speaker 17 (02:39:23):
I mean, you all saw him last year.

Speaker 20 (02:39:24):
Yar h his first team All Big twelve, He led
the conference interceptions and LSU was atrocious in safety last year.
Literally is the worst safety playoff scene since I've covered
LSU for two decades. And he's awesome. I mean, he
is a fantastic football player who was going to start
and probably not come off the field. So the fact
that they're going to miss him for a half in
that environment against that offense is a big deal.

Speaker 5 (02:39:46):
Again, he's Matt miscon a ESPN one oh four to
five talking some LSU Tigers with us here on the
Seawn Salisbury Show Sports Talk seven to ninety. That secondary itself,
I mean, that seems like it's been something that has
been a little bit of a weak spot for LSU
over last for years, and it doesn't seem like that
should be the case, but just both safety corner how
do they feel about that group this year?

Speaker 17 (02:40:07):
Well, Dan, I know where we started.

Speaker 20 (02:40:09):
We were talking about LSU, you know, doing work in
the portal, and they went and addressed the secondary in
the portal. They added Halisey, but they also added to
Marcus Cooley at safety from NC State, so they had
two of the top safeties in the portal.

Speaker 17 (02:40:19):
Both those guys are expected to start.

Speaker 20 (02:40:21):
And they also got Monster Delayed from Virginia Tech who
was a multi year starter at Virginia Tech and is
a very good player. He's an NFL body, So they've
upgraded both spots. Also, you know name of people follow recruiting,
they'll know his DJ Pickett. He's a five, so he's
the number one corner in the country for this this
most recent cycle.

Speaker 17 (02:40:39):
He's out out of Florida and he wears number three.
He's a legit six'. Five it's it's pretty incredible to
see a six foot five, corner but he.

Speaker 15 (02:40:47):
Is he is.

Speaker 17 (02:40:48):
Impressive he's like a tarantula out. There so.

Speaker 20 (02:40:50):
There you, know it's interesting THAT lsu had built this
reputation AS, dbu which was earned for so many, years
and everybody knows the names From, Tyrone, Matthew Patrick peters
And Derek, Stanley Tredavious. Whit everybody knows all the. Names but,
really Since Brian kelly had got here when he did
not Retain Corey, raymond who was kind of the architect
OF dbu it he wrote, IT i, mean there's just
no other way around. It two years, ago in twenty twenty,

(02:41:13):
three The Jaye daniels, year they was literally the worst
defense in the history OF lsu.

Speaker 17 (02:41:16):
Football so they're they're rebuilding it through both recruiting and the.

Speaker 20 (02:41:23):
Portal so they get some young talent they've, recruited but
really for this, year supplementing in the portal the way
they did is going to make them dramatically better while
expected to make them dramatically better while some of that
young talent grows and. Develops but they're going to be.
Better but then, Again, dan it's not hard to be
better when two years ago you were literally the worst
defense in the history of the. Program, SCOTT i want

(02:41:45):
to bring in the two big games. Tomorrow obviously we
Get texas At ohio status the early. Game we GET
lsu At clemson in the later. Game we heard just
a week ago The College Football Playoff committee announced that
a new metric that they'll be, using they will account
for strength of.

Speaker 6 (02:42:01):
Schedule how much that weighs into, it we'll find. Out
BUT i bring that up simply because these are four
top ten teams all playing each, other and you, know
the headlines On monday out of a loss will, be
oh my, god you know they're season's. Over, Whatever but
we all, know you, know there's a whole season to
go from. HERE i, mean is there a world where

(02:42:22):
Both texas AND lsu lose On saturday yet still are
both playoff.

Speaker 20 (02:42:26):
TEAMS i think both teams do lose On, saturday AND
i think both teams go seven and one in the
conference in Playing atlanta for THE Sec championship, game and
both teams do make The College Football. Playoffs SO i
think that happens now as far as the strength of schedule. Component, brother,
LIKE i could not give a rip about The College

(02:42:47):
Football playoff telling us they're throwing the strength of schedule
metric in.

Speaker 17 (02:42:50):
THERE i don't care what metric they throw.

Speaker 20 (02:42:54):
Out we hear so much garbage from, this this legion
of goons that gather in this hotel ball in suburb In,
dallas and they're sick of these, people like it doesn't
matter what you let them. Consider, ultimately their decision is their,
decision and they don't even have to explain. It there
are no guidelines that direct what they. Do they will

(02:43:15):
do whatever they want to, do and they usually find
the path of least. Resistance like last year When indiana
got in at eleven and, one and you had THREE
sec teams that were sitting there at nine and, three
played tougher schedules and all are on the outside looking,
in because.

Speaker 17 (02:43:27):
It's easier just to, say, oh eleven and one.

Speaker 20 (02:43:30):
TEAM i know you played one ranked team and got
your ass kicked by, them but we're gonna put you
in because you're eleven and. One and then they went
and got there behind kicked By Notre.

Speaker 17 (02:43:38):
DAME i will. LISTEN i don't care about the. COMMITTEE
i want them to go away.

Speaker 20 (02:43:44):
Forever it's the most, nonsensical stupidest thing that college football
could do in a sport filled with nonsensical stupidity over
its one hundred and thirty year.

Speaker 17 (02:43:54):
Existence we love college football in spite of.

Speaker 20 (02:43:56):
Itself we will be so much better when we get
to a point where there is a power rating, system
call it like THE bcs was or, whatever where every
team goes into the season knowing exactly what they have
to do to satisfy the metrics to get into the
postseason and let it fall where it. May we need
to incentivize teams for playing games like, this not penalize.

Speaker 17 (02:44:19):
Them AND i know that's what the strength of schedule
metrics is supposed to.

Speaker 20 (02:44:21):
Do but believe you, me when we get To december
and those goons are meeting in that hotel, ballroom they're
going to side with the teams that have the fewer
losses regardless.

Speaker 17 (02:44:30):
Of strength of.

Speaker 20 (02:44:31):
Schedule it's just how it's going to, be because it's
easier to do that than try to figure out what
do you do with nine and Three South carolina that
you think is better but they got but they lost
to nine and Three bama who lost to six and Six. Vanderbilt,
like it's just it's easier to go, ed just go
with the eleven and one. Team it's what they're gonna
do this year because the committee is a it's a

(02:44:52):
fundamental absurdity to let a group of people arbitrarily try
to just sit there and decide who they think are
the best twelve teams in THE.

Speaker 5 (02:44:59):
Cu, gordy it sounds like you And scone are kindred
spirits on that topic right, there because that's exactly What
gordy said a little bit.

Speaker 3 (02:45:06):
Earlier.

Speaker 5 (02:45:06):
Scone Matt moscone AT espn one four to five In
Baton rouge joined us a couple more minutes talking TO
Lsu clemson and JUST lsu in general this. SEASON i
know That Garrett nussmeyer would be Somebody i'd want to ask,
about BUT i got to go with the, lines both
offensive and. Defensive the offensive last year had a lot
of hype to it didn't necessarily live up to. It

(02:45:27):
defensive line this year maybe even a little bit of an,
experience but it sounds like there's more hype for that.

Speaker 20 (02:45:31):
Group, Yeah, DAN i wouldn't even say an. EXPERIENCE i
would say it's just lack of experience playing. TOGETHER i
mean that's one of the areas they went in the,
portal both at tackle and an end and just loaded.
UP i, mean Did Jack pieburn came in From, Florida
he's a fourth year. Guy Jamari butler came in From.
Nebraska he's a sixth year. Guy Patrick, payton who's got

(02:45:54):
forty career, TFLs came in From Florida.

Speaker 17 (02:45:56):
State he's a fifth year.

Speaker 20 (02:45:57):
Guy they they Get jacobe And guillery back off injuries
a sixth year, player they.

Speaker 17 (02:46:03):
Do they got tons of depth and talent and.

Speaker 20 (02:46:05):
Experience it's just that a lot of these guys are,
transferred so they haven't played. Together that's the challenge with
THIS lsu. TEAM i don't think many people know really
understand WHAT lsu did in the Portal they had the
number one portal class by a country, mile And Brian
kelly disclosed it went and spend eighteen million bucks on

(02:46:27):
the portal. Class so it should be really, talented, RIGHT i,
mean you're gonna pick that, investment you should be. Good
they've got the. Talent IT'S i keep comping it to
What Ohio state And Ole miss did a year. Ago
they went and signed the top portal. Classes they had
a ton of. Talent it's just how quickly can you
get all of that talent to play well. Together like
by the time we get to Mid October, NOVEMBER lsu

(02:46:50):
could be a bolder rolling downhill that nobody wants to
be in the way Of it's just what is the
first six weeks of the season.

Speaker 17 (02:46:59):
Look like and are are?

Speaker 20 (02:47:01):
There do they avoid the land mines to get to
the point where they're playing well enough to make a
Playoff Berth that's going to be the really interesting thing
with this. Team but, yes the defensive line they invested
heavily there and should be really.

Speaker 5 (02:47:12):
Good real quick final one from me And Garrett. Nesmeyer
he was my heisman pick yesterday and we made our
predictions for the season With sean. Here how far off
or how far on AM i about him this?

Speaker 17 (02:47:25):
Season?

Speaker 20 (02:47:27):
Well, look he Threw this is the thing people, Forget
Like Garrett usmeyer through for four thousand. Yards he's the
leading returning passer in college. Football he's the only returning
four thousand yard passer and last year was his first year.
Starting if you just assume an, improvement however, gradual you
expect him to throw for four thousand yards and thirty.

Speaker 17 (02:47:45):
Touchdowns So, DAN i think all the stats will be
there for him to be In New york and all.

Speaker 20 (02:47:49):
THAT i, mean it should. Be it's just the question
is the team. SUCCESS i, mean he's a He Arch,
Sellers Drew Kate CLUB mca mean they're all right there
at the top of The heisman, odds so it's not
a bad. Pick arts will have the excuse, Me nuts
will have the. Stats it's really just a matter will

(02:48:09):
the team's success be there that will allow him to
win the.

Speaker 5 (02:48:12):
