made his approach to it. He's missing throws that are
dig routes and stuff that he'd normally make. And he's
also you watch his head the pressure I mean, and
the offensive line. Once again, there was times to get time,

but they got when they wanted a blitz. They can't
pick up a blitz. They just can't. They They it
doesn't matter where it's coming from. They're going to find
a way to get in a team that blitzes. If
I was Todd Bowles last night, you could have blitzed
eighty five percent of the time and dismantled this offense.

NFL after two games, that's all we got to judge.

over his head as a rookie play caller. Now it's

still a rookie play caller, and sometime I know, at
some point in time, you got a rookie play caller

Some of the situational football last night was bothersome to me.
They told you last night, inside the five yard line

We're not physical enough to manhandle anybody. So we've got

We got to do we gotta. We have to throw
the football down there. And they weren't close on their

not going to want to criticize a second gameplay calling coordinator.
I get it, but he's got to just like a
player does. He's got to step up his game and
understand who his team is. CJ. Stroud, we hold him
to a higher we do after his rookie year, but CJ.
Stroud and I get last year took step back, but
he is missing out. He's missing throws that he made

in his second game as a rookie. Don't tell me
the collateral damage from offensive line play hasn't affected his game.
And that's not just off. But he has got to
be strong enough to deal with that and get by it.
That's part of playing the positions, not just can you
throw it? Yeah, And when people say, well, look when
he doesn't get hit, he throws a good I don't
know many quarterbacks that can't throw it with a clean

to play better the play calling in the red you
cannot walk away from there and telling you you told Tampa, no,

we're a finesse team, Dude, we're not pounding you in this.
And Tampa turned around and said, well, we're quite the opposite.
We got a quarterback who makes some plays, but what
it's nutcut time, You're gonna have to defend us inside
running downhill. They don't have the best offensive line in
the league, far from it. And their right tackle got hurt,
that's the game, and their backup came in and did
his job. Who was here before? Okay, so I just

It feels like it's been two years. Maybe it was

of flaws on this football team. We tried to I
went into this season to say, and there's no this
team should dominate this division. And you know what, there

it's groundhog day when it comes to the physicality, which
is bothersome on offense, and like I said, the defense
got pushed around at the line of scrimmage, which was
which was bothersome as well, and they got after Baker times.
But he made more plays in the quarterback here. He
just did at the right time. And you just told
the world, and you told Tampa who you were inside

the three or four yard line with a chance to
go in. They had chances to put the game away
and didn't. How many times you heard that in the
last two years.

line that hurts you the most last year. Laken Tomlinson
is a fine enough backup line lineman in this league.

us ursery wasn't supposed. One of my teammates was Charles

for me a USC, So I always want to call
it uster but ersery. Where did they want to play
him in the offseason? I want to play with right tackle?
Where is he playing left tackle? How many games in
are we two? So basically the veterans you went and
got couldn't beat out. He basically won the job at

both positions. Correct or incorrect?

So the point is is that that depth, well the
rookie walltz of there's that do this, and now you're
just going to have to get through the growing pains
of him. You know, he's got I think he's got
a chance to be a really good player. The problem
is the overall process. It's not very good.

And I had the guards flipped. It's Tomlinson at the
left and Ingram at the right. But still, I mean,
Sean and I did while I was there at the

you know they're being there, that they're sitting behind you

talk about the truth, it's behind the scenes people to

you're going to find as important and telling a stat
as there is an offensive football aside from the obvious
turnover stuff and even maybe more at times. Is not
yards running the football, it's attempts. And dude, I'm telling
I'm going to look through it. I already looked the
Chargers Raiders. Chargers had more attempts. I'm going to go

through it, and I'll be damned, I'll be shocked if
it's not eight out of every ten in the league
games that are won or more, the team with the
most attempts wins a football game. Rushing attempts, even if
it was for thirty five carries for ninety yards, doesn't matter.
You just said it. They out carried him by what

eleven big difference attempts. Forget the yards and yards per
carrying attempts, it's the number aside from turnovers. Now, like
I said, it may even be more telling than turnovers.
The number of teams that run the ball more. I'm
going to say. And I haven't even looked but one
of the game, this one and in the Charger Raider

game last night. Well, we're two and zero to start
working our way backwards. And college may be a little
different these days with the way they used the screen
game as the run game. But I'm just telling you
on straight out runs, I'll have that stat I'm gonna
go through them, and it's blatant. So and then that
when you don't even attempt down there to to impose

your will. Tampa was not going to throw the football
with nine seconds to go. You do know this, correct,
They were gonna run it twice and gamble that that
was going to that's how they're gonna win again.

I knew that, you knew that.

We all knew that, and so did the other team,
meaning the time, meaning the Texans. It was there's things
that need fixed. The quarterbacks got to play better. The
offensive line's got to be more physical, the defense has
got to be more disciplined on penalties. Yet they're so
frigging good, there's just some things that got to get done.
And you know, the special teams, special teams and defense

did enough to win last night. Offense did not. But
that's been the theme of this team for a minute now.
And it's not just the offensive line. It's not just
a run game. Quarterback included. Why. There's a lot that
needs to be done, and right now they're not doing
enough of it. They're just not doing enough of it.

And that is the difference in the game because you
ran the ball nineteen times, four of them were from
your quarterback, So about twenty percent of your runs came from.

Speaker 1 (28:19):
Your quarter And how many of those were designed? Not
a single one, So in truth they called fifteen runs.
He just scrambled for four more, right, So that's even
more they doubled up your attempts. Unless you have a
phenomenal game as a quarterback, you're rarely winning football games
with fifteen rushes. Four of them were non designed scrambles.

So it's yeah, now you oh it's only two in Yeah, well, okay.
Who would you rather be right now? The Cults are
the Texans. I'd rather be two and out.

That's exactly right, and they've got good players, but the
problem is the sum is still not as good as
the parts and guys you expect to elevate. And that
includes like I said, you know my affinity for CJ. Stroud,
But there is a noticeable difference to me in the
way they're going about their business and him may not
these I it looks like he's in good shape everything.
I'm just talking about the collateral damage from last year.

Dude is taking its toll, and it's taking it on
him somehow, some way. He has got to because he's
missing the easy stuff that he doesn't normally miss, dig
routes that are bouncing eight feet behind somebody. And you
can't tell me that in your mind, you're built in
time clock and having been there, speeds up when you're
not sure the pressure. And it's a amazing to me

that they don't throw hot very often. They don't you
blitz them. They the confusion you create for them is maddening.
Somehow you got to, I mean, to identify who you're
just just to make sure you know who to block.
And it happened last night a couple of times they
did not play and then uh, goongle Wally got what

walked his ass right back into the quarterback. So you
got to come up and thump man. And it's just
if it's not one thing, it's another, and the offense
flounders round and you're not gonna win a lot of games.
I hate to say, what nineteen points in the league
your defense that they you scored nineteen that what they had. Yeah,
they end up twenty nineteen because if you if you

scored nineteen points, you're putting way too much pressure. This
ain't the no no offense to the Texans. They ain't
the too the the uh, the the Ravens of ray
Lewis was at the two thousand Ravens? Was that what
it was?

They ain't the two thousand Ravens. Dude, No, you don't
have to say that right now.

You don't have Tony Siragusa, you don't have Jamie Sharper,
you don't have Ray Lewis, you don't have any of

have what they had now, so that you're paying because

very good offensively, but they just stayed the course and

The only time we had a decent line was twenty
twelve when we went what was eleven four, twelve and
twelve and four. But that's it. And you'd think they'd
learned from that, but I mean you can't. You got

to have a good offensive line and and of course
the coach can go along with it. But I mean
that's uh, you know, that's just keeps being the problem.
They just don't get it, and I don't understand why
and why they did the things that they did, like
in the draft and everything. I would just like them
see see them try to get more physical, that's all.

thinking about the Charger game that followed last night. First off,

goes hardball steps in the league and in two years
puts the dominant line together And there's a reason because

that's in his culture and it's is in nature, and
it's a great point by him for me, there's a
reason Howie Roseman's team continue to dominate and he's every
year Executive of the Year. You could vote him it
every year. They did two things. First off, you have
to have a quarterback. You have got one. We got one.
Now he's got to play better. But Jalen Hurts was questioned,

and questions had him in two super Bowls. They got
a quarterback. There was people up until he went to
the Super Bowl going into last year. Well, man, is
Jalen Hurts really our guy? Yeah, he's your guy. That
how he's built it. Look at their front seven, how
dominant they are in Philly. Now, I think this team's

headed in that right direction. Now I want you to
look at the other side of it and take a
look at their offensive line. And they ran the ball
well even with the office line. And then they bring
Barkley in just at it. So they went Barkley second,
old line first, which is what you're supposed half to say.
I don't understand setting up with those rooms. You hear it.

It's listen when they talk about well, the game's changed,
the game's not. There's one place the game has not changed.
If you don't have a playmaker quarterback, you will not
win a championship. And when I say playmaker, Well, Sean,
what about the Brad Johnson's who's a great friend of mine.
Teammate Brad Johnson has had four thousand yard season. Brad
Johnson played great when nessa I'm not talking about you

have to be a star, but you have to play
air free. Joe Flaccoll wasn't a star going into that
Super Bowl run where you he threw eleven touchdowns and
no picks and got a pay raise after it. We look,
Joe Flacco was a really good player, got him there,
and then we turned it into a star after that,
because what do you do. Matter of fact, if you
would have gone through the quarterback judgments going into the playoffs,
Flacco would have been like ranked in the playoff quarterbacks

that you know in the middle, lower third to middle. Well,
he goes on that run, they kick ass, has a
great postseason and he say he played great at the
right time. So when I say a play maker quarterback,
I'm talking about air free, smart football at the right time.
Trent Dilfer played it in Baltimore with the defense. He
didn't put him into harm's way. Brad Johnson's done it.
I've saw Jeff Hostetler do it, play defense, run the ball,

and go eighteen to twenty smart stuff.

So you got to have that. We know that, but
if you do not the fundut Like.

I said, I don't care if it's nineteen sixty, and
I don't care if it's twenty twenty five or twenty
and fifty. It's never going to change. So you have, oh,
these old heads that think you've got to be physical,
run that you do, and you might want to add
a little that old experience to you when you're building
and constructing a team to understand that the thing that
will never change. Finesse teams don't win championships. They look pretty,

they sell tickets, and they win some games, but you're
not winning all. And He's right, how are you going
to stop that Chargers team coming down hill at you
if you play them in a playoff game? How are
you going to stay? How are you now? The defense
will they're they'll lower their ass and get after you,
but not enough to be able to help your offer there.
I mean, they got put like I said, they got
pushed around by a a team that's not inferior upfront,

(39:02):
good upfront, and that's how they won their Super Bowl
with Brady. But they're not the most dominant run team.
Matter of fact, take a look at them last year,
their statistics running football last year. So this team does
know that they are. I mean they've made a commitment
vision to know in physicality matters. And so if you're
not building it offensive line, defensive front first, save it.

(39:24):
That means edge, rusher included, interior defensive linemen, tackles, guard, center.
You got to build it that way. And that's why
the great ones do. And Harball it's been in his
mentality since he coached is but an assistant with the Raiders,
a head coach at at USD, all those things that
go on that Jim was coaching, then Michigan, San Francisco, Michigan.

(39:46):
His whole life has been we do it old school.
It comes from an offense A line coach, Dad is
we line up, you punch him in the mouth and
have a quarterback that makes plays when necessary. McCarthy Herbert.
Now they run it. And so he walked in there
in the building. The no doubt when you walked in
the first meeting room there, it's you're either going to
be physical, you're not playing for me.

Got to the point that we thought offensive lineman, it
was a pillow fight. And last night they had a
sledgehammer in their pillow fight, and you had down feathers.
On both sides of the ball. They blitched you, they

we're going to run it, they told you they were
going to run it, and they still did and you.

Stroud's is a special passer. But you can see at
this position. It's like I'm telling you, and I've compared
it all the time, take your golf swing and missed
by us by one groove and your golf ball will
be different. I'm talking about a fingernail club open. The

ball is going to cut. You know, when you see
the worn out like Tiger, you see the worn out
spot in the middle. He hits there all the time.
Guess what that is. That's a quarterback who's completing seventy
percent hitting it right smack dab there. Then, no matter what,
squares the club up, and we ask those guys to
do that. Hey, no matter where you square it up,
it's the same thing here, No matter what, you got
to keep squaring the club up as a quarterback. And

right now, I understand new coordinator, all the things, I
get it, but the great ones and he's still he's
got a chance to be great. He does.

I believe in Stroud. I'm not moving on from him.

I understand Brad's frustration, but you can't regress two years
in a row, in those first two games and a
lot of this stuff that he missed. And it may
be collateral damage from the line, like I said.

He's got to be accountable to I can't let that
bother me, because you know what, The offensive line situation
ain't getting fixed in twenty twenty five, dude, It's just
not there. They're not give Trent Williams isn't available, Ronnie
Stanley can't play here this year. Lane Johnson's got a
job elsewhere, so you're just gonna have to find a
way to piecemeal and take care of it. But he

is going to have to elevate too, So he's out
void of Chris the two strikes Stroud in the defense.
Defense got pushed around last night at times, a little
undisciplined with penalties and c J. Stroud's got to play
better and on the open stuff and throwing it. And
I believe he is going to get there. We're not ready.
You're not ready to move on from him. The guy
is going to be a hell of a player, I believe,

(46:51):
but I also know that I have seen some things
that are concerning for me about him. And he looks
more any anxious the last year and a half, the
last year and two games then he looked at any
time as a rookie.

Even with time to throw. You saw his feet roll
over anxious.

And the head's not all the time where it needs
to be.

He doesn't trust his guys, and he can say what
he wants.

be on him to elevate that. You've got to get
out of your own head and do it knowing that
men may be like this again all year. So with that, hell, yeah,
I think he can play. There's no doubt. I know
how hard it is to play the position. But I

I'm feeling anxious on a clean pocket, and I can

vanish when I may be way off, but I try
to study this thing pretty closely. His pocket presence is
different than it was as a rookie now, I can

tell you. As rookie sometimes you realize you don't know
what you're doing. Dude, I'm just telling you don't. And
like I told a quick story yesterday on a show,
and I'll try to make this as clear as I can. Dan,
when I first started playing golf, I could I was
a great putter. I don't mean that arrogant. I was

a great pett because it was like if we went
outside right now and we had a golf club in
our hand and we're standing on a golf car stand out,
and you said, Sean Wor's fifty yards or seventy yards.
I can visually tell you just within a yard or
two seven years, Like when I go on a golf course,
so i'm inside one hundred yards, Oh that's about eighty
five yards, I'll get it within three or four yards
just from the football depth processions.

Sure, So I could putt, but the other stuff I
had to work on it still to this day. Well,
what happened is I started putting. I was putting. It
was just a field guy, you know'd step up, look
at it, measure it, and my eyes could tell where

a good feel for distance whatever. For whatever reason, maybe
it was the sense of being a quarterback and understanding
distance whatever. I started watching reading golf. Died just more

and more watching all these things, and oh more technical
start writing stuff down. Did right now, the worst part
of my game is your putting. Yes, And it's because
I've gotten so well, let me trust this grip, and
I've changed my grip, and I've changed the putter. It
ain't the putter, dude, the good putters can put with
a broomstick, and so I got two technical. It started
overthinking every and I still do stand over three foot

(49:24):
or shun the old school. You have stepped up, Look
ats inside right, hit the damn ball and move on.
I'm looking at it and say, not taking time, but
just looking at different the same thing here now. And
I get the feeling that as a rookie he played
free and easy with no expectation. Yes, and now he's
playing uptight and anxious and there is expectation. And the

problem is on stuff that CJ. Stroud would make with
one eye closed, he's not making with two eyes closed.
And that's a problem for me.

He's better than David Carr is, but this is starting
to look like David Carr and the And it's just
they've got to be better in there deciphering protections and and.
