Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is Sports Talk seven ninety grateful for our weekly
visit here on the Shawn Salisbury Show, nine thirty each
Wednesday with Astro's general manager Dana Brown. Dana, good to
have you on. Missed you during the All Star break,
but I know much needed rest. If there is such
a thing as with the trade deadline approaching and all
that's going on, let me get where your mindset was,
just as a baseball guy and a general manager of

(00:21):
your team going into the All Star break. One in five,
coming out, lose a couple right against a divisional opponent.
Tell me at the worst of those seven or eight games,
where was your mindset about your team during that skid,
the small one, that the worst one they've had all year.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Yeah. Look, I'm very positive about our club. I mean,
our club is as I mentioned before, we're showing a
lot of grit through all these injuries. And you know,
the main thing is that we stay positive. We know
that we have you know, depth on our roster, and
we continue to play good baseball. I mean, you know,
if you look across the league, a lot of teams

(00:59):
are going through their ups and downs. It's just part
of baseball, you know, And We're still we're still continuing
to show the grit that's necessary, you know, to be
in first place. Very proud of the boys and how
they're handling it. Joe spotted leadership down in the dugout.
You know, look, we're still grinding through this. We have,
you know, sixty one games to go, and you know,

(01:22):
we're not taking our foot off the gas. We're going
to continue to play hard baseball.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Dany, It's uncanny. We we've talked about grit and resilience
before you got here, and since you've been here, you've
seen it up close, and their reputation preceded them even
before you got here, and now it's the same way.
But you start to think about how uncanny it is.
It just seems like no matter what's going on, there's
always they're gonna spin their way out of it. You
guys always do. And then it's always somebody different. Now

(01:47):
you got Bryce Matthews three home runs in two days,
Tremmell has contributed. Hell, you got what you got a
playoff baseball team that's hurt. I mean I could take
the injuries and we could put a roster together so
that they could probably make the playoffs. How you talk
about grit, but data there comes a point in time
when that's always challenged as well. For normal people. This

(02:08):
doesn't seem like a normal team because of their ability
to overcome. I mean, when do they get frustrated and
when do they say, well, this guy's too young to
come in and make an impact. It just feels like
it's clockwork, and I know it's not that easy.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Yeah, you know, look, it's a winning environment first of all,
and we preached that, you know, the window is always open,
so you know what, that's where we start off at.
And then you know, we got guys that are itching
for an opportunity to show what they could do, and
they get here and they you know, they deliver. You know,
Bryce Matthews just pretty much carrying the club through this

(02:45):
uh you know Arizona series and you know with you know,
the three home runs and the RBIs and you know,
the really nice play right there towards the end of
the game to turn that double play. I mean, look,
these guys are waiting and itching for opportunities. When they
get the opportunities, they deliver, and it's been really fun
to watch. And uh, look they're saying that this is

(03:07):
what a team is all about. You go down, I'll
pick you up. You can't play today, I got you.
And so you know this is this is the fun part. Now, look,
we we want to get our guys back, of course,
no doubt about it. But you know, when your team
is going through this downward spiral of injuries, it's really

(03:28):
really comforting to see guys come in and step it up.
And that's been fun to watch. You know. You know,
you you make these moves as a general manager and
you say, yeah, look, you know, I know I'm going
to call up Rice. You know, I wish you know,
he had a couple more months left in the minor
league season and continue to grow there. But hey, fruth
of the matter is we needed him. He came up

(03:50):
and he's stepping up. And so that's what it's all about.
That's what team's all about. That's the culture here. And
uh look and it's led by Joe spotted down in
the in the dugout. And look, Joe has really kept
a calm voice down there in that clubhouse. I mean things,
when you go through this type of damer spiral of injuries,

(04:11):
it could easily spin out of control. And Joe has
been the calming influence down there, and I give hats
off to Joe for what he's done.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
Astro's GM Dana Brown is weekly visited here on Sports
Talk seven to ninety and the expertise of your ability
to see talent, Dana, we see it every day with you.
And how from the guys you've brought here from someplace
else that maybe were cast offs, or whether it's trades,
or whether it's the camp smith and all that stuff
and paratus when you mentioned Bryce Matthews and Taylor Tremmell,

(04:41):
the guys that are here doing their thing, does it
even even with the grit and resilience in the way
you guys develop them and the belief in the system,
have you at least been a little surprised a little
bit even you shocked it? Man? Look how Camp's impacted.
Look at the urgent impact by Bryce Matthews when Tremmel
when you've needed it. Does it even surprise you a

(05:02):
little bit? Data that they've elevated their play in a
time of distress, what you guys have been through with
these injuries.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Look, I would say that these are strategic moves that
you know that we may so let buy our let
buy our front office and continue through our coaching staff.
You know, we acquire guys, you know, whether it's by
trade or whether it's by waiver wire, or whatever the
case may be. This is a collective effort by the
front office and the coaching staff, and we talk about

(05:32):
these players. We say, hey, look, this guy is a
guy that we think we can get in the trade,
or this guy's a guy that we think we should
claim off waivers. You know, we think we can do
this with them. We know, we know that you know,
his fastball is doing this. Maybe we need to get
him to put a little bit more pressure on this singer.
I mean, we do a lot of different things as
a collective group, and it's you know, we meet a

(05:54):
couple of times a month even during the season, the
coaching staff in front office, and we go through a
lot of different things and we have conversations about what
we need to do to continue to be good. And
you know, I give it to the entire I give
it to the entire staff. Look, we work our tails off,
and I think what we're seeing on display right now

(06:17):
is a group of collective people in this organization working
hard to remain good at this, uh, and and and
stay in first place and so uh, that's where the
love goes and that's where you know, we continue to
flow and play good baseball.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
What's the ceiling on Bryce Matthews.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Yeah. You know when we took Bryce a couple of
years ago in the draft, I mean, the thing that
we kept talking about was he was very athletic. He
had exit velocity, so he hit the ball very hard.
And look, we felt like we can really make some
adjustments with him defense, defensively, and you know, he had
a willing heart to make those vestments. And now we're seeing,

(07:02):
you know, another young player come up to the big
leagues and contribute. And you know, our hope is that
he continues to play well while we need him during
this stretch of injuries. And you know he's taken to it.
But you know, we kind of had this vision of
bright when we saw him and we drafted him in
the first round a few years ago because of the
way he swings the bat and because of the athleticism,

(07:25):
we thought he would be able to make adjustments.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
All right, Dana to your to our favorite thing, the
injury report. But there are some good signs. I mean,
this has got to be about as optimistic I was.
Imagine if you've been as far as the closeness of
how getting them back. I mean, what Arraghetti and JP,
France and Garcia all headed to Corpus Christi, which that's
a hell of a staff at Corpus Christi, and now

(07:48):
I believe Javier from Corpus Christi to sugar Land. How
close is that group of four? I mean, I know
there's no specific timeline, but if there is, are we
within striking distance? Can you see the light flow in
the tunnel?

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Yeah, so I think we're in striking distance. And these guys,
once we start to build them up through this spring
training type move, you know, the guys are actually getting
to three innings. Arrogetty's up to three innings, Hears up
to three innings, Garcia's up the two innings, you know,
you know, JP Frances knocking on the door of two innings.
And so these guys are starting to build up. Javier's

(08:24):
up to ninety five, you know, Garcia's up to ninety three,
Branch is up to ninety three. I mean, these guys
are starting to throw the ball well, and of course
Arrogatty threw his three innings he's throwing the ball well,
So definite light at the end of the tunnel. You know,
once these guys go on to rehab and we start

(08:45):
to build them up, those are good signs that you know,
and they're bouncing back after their start, that means that's
a good sign of them coming back. And so it's
been very refreshing to see that. You know, we got
Jurdon finally hitting through his uh you know, hitting progression,
and you know, that's a that's a good thing. And
so the guys are starting to come back, and look,

(09:06):
we're right here at the deadline and you know, we're
we're trying to talk through that as well. And so
I think if we can weather this storm of injuries,
we got guys coming back and we're still playing good baseball,
those are all good signs for the Houston Astros and
the fan base. And you know, we're we're trying to
really hold this thing together and we're doing a pretty

(09:26):
good job of doing that.

Speaker 1 (09:28):
Dana, when I mentioned the other side of it now
and the everyday players of Jordan and Jeremy Pania and
Parades uh If, I said, they'll all three are going
to be back in August. How close am I.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Yeah, very close. I mean Pina may go out on
a rehab at the end of this week. You know,
there's a chance to do him doing that. You know,
I'm watching video every day of that they're sending me
with his progression. He looks good, you know, Jordine is
pain free, and we're gradually building him up, uh with
with mixing in the day off and so you know,

(10:05):
that looks really good. And so I think it's yes,
we I mean, we should be getting these guys back,
and they're they're going to be very important to our run.
You know, I think Pinya may be the first guy back.
But I think, you know, it's looking good. It's looking
really good for our position player.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
Hey, Dan, if if Alvarez is pain free and you've
been you know, for the last couple of weeks, it
seems like he's been headed towards that. And if he's
operating pain free post workout, like heading into a day off,
isn't it realistic to think that if this stays that
way in the next hand, next week or so, that
we could see him sooner now, sooner than later. I
know it's been a while now and it's the setback.

(10:46):
But if he's pain free, isn't that basically the whole thing?
Right now? Can he go pain free day after day
after day? Is that where we're at the with standing
and sustaining pain free for a week at a time.
I mean, if he's that close, I mean, shouldn't we
be a little excited about August? And maybe sooner than
later in August?

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Oh? Yeah, very excited about August for him. And and
so what we're going to do is increase the intensity
on the you know, the swings, and so as we
continue to build that up and he's paying free the
day after, those are all good signs that we can
increase it even more. And so as we progress through
this thing, you know, we feel very comfortable that we're

(11:26):
going to get him back, you know, hopefully sooner rather
than later. And if he continues to progress in this
manner and so, uh, those are all good things. And
and and as I mentioned, we're gonna try to increase
the intensity, and if he continues to be pain free,
we can continue to increase the intensity and thatch the

(11:47):
tell tale tests. And uh, he's been doing well so far.
So we're just we're thankful.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
And are we day to day with Myers or is
it just kind of is it just rest for what
his calf and it's not an achilles, correct.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
Yeah, it's just not an achilles. Uh, it's dated. It's
day to day rest. Let them continue to rest that thing.
And you know, we don't want to push him too hard.
And uh, I mean I think that Myers we should
see sometime in August as well, and so but we
have to we have to let him rest and go
through his progression right now. And and we feel like

(12:22):
he's going to be fine just as well. So at
some point we'll get all three of these guys back
and uh, you know that's the beauty of you know,
just getting these guys back and wre we're looking forward
to that.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
If I were to describe, and I'll let you go
on this. And by the way, a bummer for Lance mccullors.
Maybe mentally, it's a decent step back to get his
mind right. But you know, the blister on the finger
and it's just simply a blister, So it's just a
matter of that healing and getting like a second skin
on that. Is that correct?

Speaker 2 (12:51):
Yeah, you know, blisters could be tricky. It sort of
happened right before the last start, and then it was
really aggravated during that start, and so you know they
could be tricky, but you know, hopefully it's not too long,
all right.

Speaker 1 (13:07):
I will finish with this if somebody were to ask me,
and they have and about the trade deadline, and I
said the one word I described from my vantage point,
I said, aggressive. What would you describe for your guys
approach to the trade deadline?

Speaker 2 (13:23):
Strategic? You know, you want to be strategic in what
you do. You know, you want to acquire the right player.
You definitely want to make sure that it makes sense
for the organization and what we're doing as we continue
to grind through winning presently and the future. And so

(13:45):
you have to really think through all these things at
the deadline, and you try to acquire the right player
and it's going to get you over the hump and
get you back to the postseason and deep into the postseason.
And so that's what we're you know, we're doing. We're
trying to be strategic about this and meetings constantly and
we'll meet all the way up to the deadline.

Speaker 1 (14:04):
Will you be in the rental business?

Speaker 2 (14:08):
What was that?

Speaker 1 (14:08):
Well, you are you going to be Will you be
in the rental business? Is like a Kakuchi situation. Are
you willing to still jump into the business if a
guy's got an expiring contract at the end of this year.

Speaker 2 (14:18):
Yeah, I mean, look, we're open to anything. You know,
if the rental business is the avenue we should take,
then we'll take it. If it makes sense for the organization,
we will definitely do it. But we're open to whether
it's rental or whether it's long term or whatever the
case may be. To get this team better. I think
we will definitely do it, but it has to make

(14:40):
sense for the organization, and it has to make sense
going forward, and it has to make sense for the
presence and then so we don't want to close any door,
you know, we want to leave everything open and try
to acquire the best player for this team, player or
players for this team to get back deep into the postseason.

Speaker 1 (15:00):
And it's been impressive, man, considering what you guys have overcome.
And I know there's a lot of work to do yet.
So we look forward to next week and around then
we would be a day away from the trade deadline,
So we look forward to seeing what goes on and
getting healthy. Appreciate you, my man, and we'll discuss you.
We'll discuss and catch up with you next Wednesday at this.

Speaker 2 (15:14):
Time, absolutely still in the grind.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
Astro Fans, let's go there, you go, Dana Brown, Astros GM.
We'll be back with him next week and we're coming
back to close it out here Sports Talk seven ninety
