Speaker 1 (00:00):
Teams in first place, playing really solid baseball. Big win
last night with a lot of bats erupting and a
lot of home runs. And Dana's talked about this a
million times and last night looked like what we talked about. Dana,
welcome in. Let me start here first on the pitching side.
How are you doing this? How do you continue to
find guys that at the beginning, now you probably thought
they would most of us, like Jason Alexander. No, we're
(00:21):
not talking about Seinfeld or It's amazing that they almost
take on this life of we got to step our
game up. We're going to the Houston Astros. Your ability
to see the forest through the trees in this How
in the world do you guys keep finding these guys?
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Yeah, I've said many times, you know on TV and radio.
You know, Matt Hogan really does a pretty good job of,
you know, just going through guys that become available, and
we take a look at them, you know, from a
scouting standpoint and in the data and information standpoint, and
you know, we get excited about some of these acquisitions.
(00:58):
You know, we have really good pitches people here in
this organization that do an outstanding job. You know, starting
with our you know, major league staff. You know, we
have Josh Miller and Murphy there up at the major
league level, you know, and and then we have Les
and that does a great job, you know with some
of our minor league guys. And so these guys know,
(01:19):
you know, the drill. They understand what we're doing in
this organization. They've done it for a long time. And
these guys get after it, man, and you know they
certainly uh you know, make it, make it look good
for for for the club, and and and these guys
step it up when they get up here.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Dana, what was there anything that surprised you about Alexander's
performance last night?
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Well, the thing that you know, really surprised me is that,
you know, he just took the ball and got in
the strikes something. He was like really competing, no fear
through a lot of strikes. Uh, you know, mixed his
pitches very well, you know, good sinker was a hard
slider and kept the guys off balance, and so he
(02:03):
really competed.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
Okay, Dan, I want to know from your from your
expertise and scouting and seeing talent, when you're just using
Jason Alexander as an example from his past in Oakland
and the minor leagues. What did you see that said
this guy can help us? What told you just from
your vantage point, not anybody else's what told you this
guy could be this guy at least after one start.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Yeah, what happens is, uh, you know, our process is
Matt Hogan. He takes a look at the information in
a data when he when he's when these guys become available,
and then we have a nice conversation. He pulls up
the video and I look at it from a scouting perspective,
and then, uh, you know, when we agree on guys,
we make the acquisition. And you know that's kind of
(02:50):
like our process, and you know, we we we really
grind through this, you know, quite often and try to
get these guys to add to our because as I mentioned,
you know a long time ago that there's one hundred
and sixty two games and you need all of these
arms to get to a season. And this is a
big part of what we're doing.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Dan, I know the expected Dana Brown Astro's GM for
his weekly visit here on Sports Talk seven ninety I
know asked, when when you bring somebody the expectations you
guys want to win them all and you play them
all and it's not realistic. But that's going into each game,
I said earlier on this show, And you tell me
you agree or disagree any way you like. I said
on this show that the record they're carrying now, if
Jordon was healthy, if they didn't have any injuries on
(03:33):
the starting pitching staff, and the guys they ended in
spring training were coming in and they were all healthy,
I'd say most of us would still be happy with
this record at this time of the year. Losing Bregman,
losing Tucker, some of the we would be happy. And
yet with all those injuries and with you know, Jordon
being out and the pitching staff and the rest of
it and new guys coming in, I would think that
(03:54):
you've got to be ecstatic. And I know it's a
long season, but the static considering where you are. When
I would have said, all take this record if everybody
was healthy, right, I.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Think it's all about the culture here. You know, you
come here, you know, and it starts as the manager.
He talks about this a lot because he's been here
for a while. You know, we have a culture here
that you know, we're expected to win, you know, our
older lets us know that our window is always open.
And you know, we we grind through this every single day.
And you know, we're very proud of how our guys
(04:26):
are stepping up. They do a very good job of
filling these holes. I mean, last year, you know, we
had a better record. You know when when when Tucker
went on the IL, guys stepped up. You know, this year,
you know, guys are stepping up your tyms on the
I L. And so you know these guys, you know,
they they consistently step up. We know what the culture
(04:47):
is like. We're expected to win, and we go out
and we give it are all and let the chips
fall what they may, but we give it are all
every single day, whether it's you know, on the field,
in the front office and everything that we do in
this organization.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Data Brown astros GM a few more minutes here for
his weekly visit here on Sports Talk nine Salisby show.
You mentioned yourd on how much closer are we data
and timeline are we do we know an exact timeliners
is still a day to day thing.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Yeah, still a day to day thing. He feels a
lot better. I mean, of course we're communicating with him
every day. His hand steals a lot better, and you know,
we're playing well right now, and we want to really
make sure that we take our time because we're going
to need him for the stretch, because that's going to
be a big stretch, you know, when he gets back.
And so still day to day feels a lot better.
(05:42):
Not really taking swings right now, but you know, I
think he's what he's doing is he's holding the bat
and ripping the bat and he doesn't feel anything, and
so that's that's a that's a good thing for us.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
Andy, are you continuing up on him telling you that
he feels better and he's not feeling as much pain
but the full heels so you don't come back prematurely.
Still taking pictures and going through the MRIs to make
sure that you're updated week to week or day to
day on the on the pictures and what they look like.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
Yeah, so it's you know, we had multiple MRIs for him,
and you know he's over eighty percent just about eighty
percent healed, and it's getting better every day, and so
that's the beauty of where we are with him, and
so you know, we're very optimistic and so once he
feels really good because he's been feeling great. But once
(06:33):
he feels good for a certain period of time, we'll
let him start to take some swings and then we'll
get him more baseball activity.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
Danis cam Smith ahead of what you thought he'd be
at this point in his career for you guys when
you made the trade.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Yeah, because when we made the trade, we didn't envision
that he would be contributing to the major league teams.
Excuse me, we didn't envision he would be contriveling to
the major league team this soon. Uh, you know, had
a great spring. We gave him an opportunity, and he's
handled it very well. And then last night is a
(07:11):
glimpse of what we think, you know, he could be.
You know, with the four hits, you know, he gotta
the beauty is he's gotta. He got to hit infield,
hit with his legs. He shield power by pulling two
home runs and he got a double going the other way,
and so, uh, that's what we envisioned. Cam Smith is
gonna be a guy who could hit line to line,
(07:31):
you know, using all fields, using his legs and playing
good defense. And so uh, it's been truly good to
see that he's he's handling this well. And we always
felt like the makeup was pretty special. But he's handling
it well. And we you know, we're grinding for him
to continue to do well so we can continue to
(07:52):
play him and he continue to contribute to this team.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
Dan, when you when you trade a guy like Tucker
who's a hell of a player, and and like, okay,
now what and then you guys go and make the
deal with Nesky and Paradis and obviously Cam Smith, how
long did you envision the returns? I'm sure Chicago thought
they'd get immediate return and they have and so of
you guys, But how long did you envision did the
like the big returns for Tucker in that notwithstanding Wiznsky's injury,
(08:20):
But you know, your corner third baseman, your corner outfielder,
how long did you think it take before it paid
off like you envisioned when you made the trade.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
Yeah, I mean we envisioned that it would fully pay
off sometime in twenty twenty six, when we felt like
Cam would get to the Big Lakes at some point
in that year. But the fact that he's contributing, now,
you know, he's kind of stepped it up. You know,
we know what Dessi got hurt. We know that, you know,
Perettis has been really good for us. So you know, look,
(08:52):
we felt like all along that this was going to
be a good trade for both sides. But you know,
as I said before, we that we wanted to compete
in the presence and extend this into the future, and
so that was part of the reason why we made
the trade. We felt like it's going to be a
good trade for both sides. But we felt like, you know,
getting those fourteen years of control with all the three
(09:15):
of those players was going to be valuable to this organization.
And we're really excited about you know, how this is
playing out right now, and you know, we our hope
is that we continue to get the same production from
these guys, because you know, this is kind of how
we envisioned it.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
No doubt, is Christian Walker starting to look, I mean,
the things starting to move a little bit for him
in the right way. I know he was hitting hard, Danny,
you said that all year, but starting to move luck wise,
and just the way he's approaching his position. Are we
close to seeing a breakthrough because we've seen a couple
of home runs in the last few days.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
Yeah, I think he's right at the verge. You know.
I think a lot of this is, you know, he's
been so frustrated because he's been unlucky as a hitter,
you know, because he's hitting balls hard, and you know,
a lot of our information says, look, he's having pretty
good at bats and so we just have to be patient.
But the production will come because he's been productive his
entire career and so he's really starting to heat it up.
(10:11):
He's really you know, going through this. It's a tough
gig for you know a lot of the hitters when
they go through these down times, but he's really kept
it together mentally and he's strong mentally. And look, we
really feel like he's on the verge of breaking out.
And you know, as I said last week, this these
are his months, you know, June, July, and August is
(10:33):
where he does a lot of damage in his career,
and so we're looking forward for good things to happen.
So this is clips of coming attractions.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
Danny, you guys do a great job of manager to
general manager, scouting staff, of conversing regularly and communicating and
I know You've said it's a Joe decision about the lineup,
But has there ever been the conversation that you guys
thought maybe because you moved like to get pain, you
move them up to the one hole, yiner in the
two hole and done a great job with putting people
in position where expectations either grow or they can take
(11:02):
pressure off. With Christian Walker, was there ever any thought
that let's move him down in the order, hit him
in a seven hole and see if he doesn't get
pitches that he can drive then, or you know, and
can keep him there until he gets that feeling back
where he's got squeeze and sawdust out of the baseball bat.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
Yeah, we have conversations all the time, but these decisions
were made by Joe spot of You know, Joe's been
in the game for a long time. He's seen some
sluggers struggle at times in his career. He knows that
from his experience. So sometimes you drop him down in
the order, you get him to relax a little bit,
and sometimes they see a little bit more fastballs, you know,
(11:40):
and it's less pressure and you know, when you're not
in that three four area. And so look, he used
his experience and I think Joe does a good job
of moving guys around in the lineup, you know, especially
the Pinia move that was, you know, a really good move.
And I think Joe kind of just used his baseball
experiences because he's been in the game for a long
(12:02):
time and and it worked out, and so we think,
you know, doing that. Of course, we feel like Walker's
ran on the verge of exploding.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
Danny before I let you go, so you don't have
to walk through every single injury. Is there any other
encouraging news from some of the you know, the Garcia,
the Arraghetties, any encouraging news that gives you, Okay, man,
we're making some progress.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
Yeah, Arrogetty's going down. He's gonna throw, you know, off
the mound this week in West Palm Beach. That's very encouraging.
He's been biting at the bit. You know, McCormick is
doing baseball activity. Javier looks really, really good in his sides.
You know, JP France is also looking good. You know,
(12:47):
the Sinzo's hand, you know, he's paying free and so
these guys are coming back, and you know, we do
have a lot of injuries, but that's part of the game.
Other teams are going through the same thing, and no
one's gonna feel sorry for you. You just have to
continue to grind through it. And I give our guys credit.
You know, our guys are stepping up and that's the
(13:08):
beauty of this club. And you know they show up
every day. You know, our fans show up every day.
We've got a good contingent of fans out here in Sacramento.
And so we're in the grind and you know, we
have a vision of continuing to win, and it starts by,
you know, continue to build this lead, stay in first place,
(13:29):
win the division, go deep into the posted.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
It'll be a good problem to have when you have
a lot of depth and decisions like that. It'll be
a good problem when everybody's healthy. Data great stuff.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
Man.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
Game three today of this series, and we'll look forward
to the result and a good result, and we appreciate
your time. We'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
Yeah, I love it, man, Let's go ask your fans.
We're fired up.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
Yeah, apparently those bats were too as well last night.
We look forward to next Wednesday. Dana, thank you and
enjoy the rest of this trip. That's Dana Brown for
his weekly visit. We always appreciate him. We'll come back
and discuss us. You've got high hopes and I think
they're ahead of the ahead of what's going on and
what they expected of that. Kyle Tucker Trade, Sports Talk
