Speaker 1 (00:00):
Dana, good to have you always talk about the bats
getting hot. Imagine you'll take about fifteen in a row
like that last night. Huh that was pretty sight to see.
And then Hunter Brown doing his thing as well.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Yeah, very exciting. You know that bats came alive with
outstanding you know, fun to watch. You know that that's
one of those games to keep your blood pressure down.
You get off to a nice lead and you got
your ace on the mound. Who's looking really good right now, Dana?
Speaker 1 (00:30):
When you just came and you talk about when our
bats get hot and going last night was an indication
of it. We're starting to see certain individuals light up
a little bit as well. Altoving at the top of
that list. But describe to somebody what that looks like
for you, the sustained part of like last night and
when the bats get hot. What's it look like when
(00:52):
you come to the ballpark every day? What are you
seeing when you see, ah, we are doing what we
expected to do that. What's that visual look like?
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah, so it's it's it's when multiple guys in your lineup,
you know, are really swinging the bats well, And I
think that's what you saw a glimpse of last night.
You know, you know, early on, you know, Perettis was
you know, one of the ones that was swinging the back.
But when you you know, you look at a game
like last night, you see multiple guys that are swinging
the bat well with multiple hits, you know, that's kind
(01:23):
of exciting. You know, that's very exciting to watch, you know,
you know, and it's this homestand has been really good
for us. We've really gotten a glimpse of coming attractions
of this offense. So it's been fun to watch.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Well, we've talked about Christian Walker and you know, he's
done good work as a major league baseball player. Are
you starting to see indicating we've seen a couple of
home runs recently, Danny, you see in indications that think
that that can continue that the long balls back in
his in his swing.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Yeah, I think he's making adjustments. You know, I think
for those who are really watching closely, and you know,
let's just say, to walk off home run the other day,
you know, he had a nice little you know pivot
with his front side. You know he just picked picked
the heel up and let it and drop the heel
right down. You know a lot of times guys will
stride and you'll tinker with their stride, and I think
(02:16):
he simplified it the other night and just you know,
raised the heel at part of his load and you know,
ball was right there and he turned on it. And
so I think he's constantly making adjustments. And you know
he of course he's been pitched too tough. But look,
this guy is a professional, is a good hitter. Uh
(02:36):
you know, as I said, I think he'll be over
two fifty with you know, twenty five or so home
runs and driving close to one hundred and play a
really good defensive first face, I think that he's going
to be a really good player for us and asset
to this team.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
And he's played really good defense obviously this year so far.
Data Brown Asholl's GM for his weekly nine thirty visit
here on the Shawn sALS reach Dana. When Jose started
fast and when al two they goes through you know
the stints that he goes to and you know, got
a little cold there is there every time. You know,
he's been in the league a long time where you're
worried or is he just one of those guys He'll
(03:12):
work his way through it. It's like Mikey and the
Life serial commercial data that you and I grew up
watching at eaton. He's like, Oh, don't worry about that.
He'll do anything. Is Is it the same with Al
two Vey? Is it one of those you just like, Yeah,
he'll chase one up and out of the strike zone
and go through a streak. But when he's hot, man,
he loads you on your back and go we're seeing
that right now. Ever a time, you just think, do
(03:33):
we got to tinker with al tuo v or just
leave that catalone?
Speaker 2 (03:37):
No, you just leave out two by alone. You know,
he's one of those special hitters that you know, when
he gets hot, the hits will come in bunches. And
that's what we're seeing right now. And that's that's the
case for a lot of really good major league hitters.
They seem to get hot and it's contagious and it
just continues to pour pour through and I think, you know,
(03:58):
his hits are going to come in bunches. Know, you
don't don't really get into anything. You don't pinker with them.
You know, sometimes you like to swing at the first pitch.
Other times you'll work a deep count. Sometimes you'll pull
the ball like last night, and the other times he'll
go the other way like last night, and so you know,
it's a really tough guy to defend heavy now and
(04:18):
then he'll drop a bunt down. So look, this is
this is a guy. You know, you can't luck your
way through getting over two thousand hits, and right I
got a chance to get he's got a chance to
get the three thousand hits. So uh, you know this,
this guy is pretty special, Dana.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
What what you guys have done talent wise and piece
in this together and the culture you guys have built
is pretty pretty cool and special. So I'm gonna take
you out of your GM role for one second, and
you and I in March before or February before spring
training starts, and you you're a fan. Now it's just
me and you talking baseball before spring training. You're not Dana,
Dana Brown, the GM. I'm gonna come to you, and
(04:56):
I'm gonna tell you, Hey, by the way, you know,
Tucker and Breg are gone. They're gonna start a rookie
in right field. They've got a bunch of other young
players that are working in and a couple new players
at the corner infield positions that are not new players
in the league, but they're new here. Well, one of
our pitchers is going to be lost for the year.
Two other starting pitchers, and our five men rotation to
(05:17):
start the season are going to be injured or banged up.
We'll have our two horses at the front. We're bringing
in a guy who's been out two years, al two.
Bay is going to go through struggles. Jordon's going to
be out for an extended amount of time, but we're
going to be twenty nine and twenty five and the
pitching staff is going to be lights out. As a fan,
I tell you that in February, do you look at
me like I need drug tested? And I say, oh,
(05:39):
you're going to be twenty nine and twenty five and
doing what you guys do. Dan, It's pretty phenomenal when
you consider what you've been The resilience has been nothing
short of brilliant, not just this year, but over the
culture of this Astros team.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Yeah, I would think that, you know, I would say,
you know, looking back on the Astros, well, you can't
walk your way into eight postseasons. You know, you have
to have grit and you have to have inter fight
within and so you know, I would say, look, these
guys have have what it takes. They you know, they
don't panic, you know there they know that they belong,
(06:16):
you know, and so they're gonna grind and they have
brit and they're going to get through it. And you
know the addition of Perettis he's been really good at
third base, you know, the addition of Walker who has
been really good at first base, and Parretis has been
really swinging the bat well, and Walker's starting to heat up.
And so you know, I think those editions are you know,
(06:36):
are big for this club. And then you know what
Cam Smith is becoming right in front of our eyes
is it's really fun to watch. And I think, you know,
we we're just at the surface, you know, of what
I think this guy could become. You know, he's really
finding his way. You know, our guys have really helped
him out with you know, cleaning up part of his
(06:57):
approach and hitting and show. I think they made some
minor adjustments mechanically and uh, you know, he's starting to
really turn the corner and you know he's he's taken
to it very well. So I think this is a
really good ball club. I think we're starting to jail.
And I said, uh, you know that this club once
they played together for you know, a month or two,
(07:20):
you know, they get close and they start to jail.
And I remember this, you know myself, when you you know,
back as a player, when you used to go play
in summer ball. You know, by right around in that
second month, about a month and a half, the team
would start to jail together. And you know, there was
a lot of new faces down there, and these guys
are really getting to know each other, they're really becoming
family and and things are going well right now. And
(07:42):
you know, the pitching staff, I can't say enough about that.
And so as I mentioned before, the bats are heating up.
I think we're starting to get on all cylinders. And
you know, it's really fun.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
To watch, Dana when when you decided to and the
organization decided to keep cam Smith than the roster from
the opening day, which I think most of us thought
was awesome. And the guy's built different and you know
better than we do about his mental toughness to be
able to handle failure and success. But was there a
time or were you going to let him battle through
(08:14):
this no matter what we've briefly talked about it, but
was there a time through the struggles a little bit
and do Zenzo getting some work in the outfield and
moving mccormickory, just just the constant tinkering, but he started
to settle in. Was there a time when you felt
you should have sent him down or were you going
to let him get through this no matter what at
the major league level?
Speaker 2 (08:34):
Well, you know, I said earlier, you know, on a
few shows ago, that you know, you when you call
up a young player, you know, right around that one
hundred and fifty at bats is when they really start
to turn the corner. I've said that on this show.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
And he's got a buck thirty five, Dana, he's right
around one thirty five or so, just over one thirty. Yeah,
so right around your time, yeah exactly.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Yeah, So you give these young players, you know, it's
not my first time I'm seeing young guys come up,
you know, and you give these guys a little bit
of time to to to make the adjustments. And you know,
I said also that this guy, you know, had a
nice combination of confidence, but yet he's humble and so
you know, he's listening, he's learning and you know, but
(09:19):
yet he's still confident and confident, and he's he's growing
right before our eyes at the big league level, which
is really tough to do for twenty two year old
who was playing in college tournaments last year at this time.
And so you know, we've been excited to see, you know,
how he's turned the corner. You know, Joe shows a
lot of confidence in him, and you know, we think
(09:40):
we have something really good here. And so I think
the way the team is coming together was starting to
jail and we want to give the Astro fans something
really fun to watch, as was Jim JANEA.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
Brown for a few more minutes here on Sports Talk
seven to ninety. Danny, you can probably understand the Astros
fans who who you are so in accordance with their
fans and there being a little gun shy about Jordon
Alvarez considering no Kyle Tucker just injuries as you're protecting
the player in the way they should obviously, so when
it passes the first ten day and now we're still
(10:14):
with Jordon, haven't seen him, probably can understand their concern.
Should we be concerned that this is longer, even more
long term than where we are now or is it
now just a matter of pain threshold that when he
says we're going, we're going, are we are? We really close?
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Yeah? I think it's a matter of when he says
we're I'm ready to go, that you know that he'll
be back in the lineup. I think one thing we
have to caution here is we don't want this to linger.
You know, when you talk about your hands, you need
your hands to hit and any of these you know,
these uh, these hand injuries could be a bit tedious
(10:52):
and so you really have to allow it on the
heel because it's so easy to re injure it. Think
about guys throwing you know, up to one hundred with
heavy sinks hits the end of the bat, it vibrates
through your hands. You know, you really have to be
very careful. And so, uh, you know, we want this
to just be a one time stint on the i L.
(11:13):
You know, we can get him through this and and
get him back. We don't want to Russian rush him
back and have him go back on the IL for
three to four weeks, you know, I just you know,
we don't want that, and so, uh, we're gonna be cautious.
You know, I like that our boys are picking up
picking up the slack and uh you know, you know,
we're swinging the bats well and we're scoring runs and
(11:35):
so you know, we we we really feel like we
got to take our time with this one. But look,
he's making progress and he's he's going through baseball activity,
he's swinging the back and so he's feeling a lot better. Uh.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
We literally down to Danny. He could wake up like
today or another you know, this weekend and say, on
a stade, I'm good to go. I mean literally that
day to day he wakes and says, you know what,
it felt good. I know nothing from yesterday. Let's go
do this thing. Is is that where we are with
this that close?
Speaker 2 (12:10):
Yeah? I think what to deal is once he says, look,
I'm ready to go. You know, we'll do some type
of simulated game where you know, you can see a
live picture in some form, whether that's you know here
or in sugar Land or whatever you know we decided
to do. But you know, get him some type of
simulated game. Once he says I'm ready to go, you know,
(12:31):
I think that's going to be the next step. And
then and then we'll usher him out there in the lineup.
But you know that could happen. You know, it could
happen in a couple of days. He could say, look,
I feel great. I felt great yesterday. I feel even
better today. I took some swings off the machine. You know,
there's no vibration in the hands. You know, if I
hit one off the end, I feel good. And once
(12:52):
he says that.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
It's on all right, I know I want to get
you out of here. I know you've got game and
stuff and just this twist quick two games, said, real quick,
let's walk through Spencer Araghetti. Where are we out with him?
Speaker 2 (13:06):
Yeah? So I think I think he's gonna get the
uh you know, the cast off sometimes here soon, and
he's going to start a throwing program. You know, I
think he's going to be fine. You know, he's right
there at the brink of of of of Taunton. So
once he gets through that, we we're gonna be good
to go and get him stretched out and and and
(13:28):
let him start to throw. So I think he's probably
within a week of getting it off.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
Okay, And what about Blanco and uh, Blanco and Garcia
in that order.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Yeah, Blanco had the second opinion, and we're going to
talk to the doctor at some point this afternoon. Uh,
But he had the second opinion, and we'll have an
update probably uh at the end of the game today
since we have a day game and then Garcia. You know, look,
he's throwing si right now. And so the projected time
(14:02):
back is probably sometime because we got to build them up.
We've got to go through a spring training. The projection sometime.
We project probably late July, early August.
Speaker 1 (14:16):
Okay, well, we'll be looking forward to that data. And again,
amazing and your pitching staff and bullpen have been nothing
short of phenomenal. So it's good to have four games
over five hundred fifty four games in much better sound
than twelve and twenty four thirty six games in from
last year. Great stuff, my man. Hopefully get this one
today and these bats continue to stay hot and we
(14:36):
can see an epic move on moving Day in the
next ten to twelve games. In the first place, we'd
look forward to it and look forward to next Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
All right. Look, I appreciate being on each week, Papa
Piti Astro fans, and we're fired up.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
Always great to have you, Dana. Thank you that's Astro's
GM data Brown. Always great to have him optimistic, and
I know that game last night fired him up. We'll
be back to wrap it up here with Dan and
I and make a few comments on Dana's comments next
