Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sports Talk seven ninety Sean Salisbury's show. Fortune now to
be joined on the weekly visit as we always do
at this time with the Astros General manager Dana Brown.
Always great to have him on. Dana, welcome in. Let's
just backtrack a little bit. An impressive trade deadline. You know,
people getting better here everywhere else for the most part.
And you you had mentioned that teams that are in it,
(00:22):
you're dealing with other teams and people are in a
by moode because there's a lot of teams with the
chance to win it. Assess how you felt before going.
We know how you felt as far as energy wise,
but now coming out of it, how you feel about
really the three guys that you got that are already
contributing to this team.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Yeah, absolutely feel really good about these guys. You know,
I would say that, you know, we felt really good
about going to get some position players because we had
some pitching coming back, and so we knew we had
to improve the offense. You heard me talk a lot
about getting a left handed bat. You know, we were
able to get a left handed back. We got a
right handed bat and then fielder in Carlos Korea left
(01:04):
handed bat with you know, Sanchez and in areas we
got you know, a guy that could play Gold Glove
utility and fielder, and you know it's going to help
us down the stretch. And these three guys we felt
good about going to get and and as I mentioned before,
we got the pitching coming back. You add this to
your offense and you got a chance of being a
(01:27):
well oiled machine and go down for a good run here.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
And Dana, even though you don't like to part, you know,
Gusto had done a really good job here. And you're
talking about you know, at times, as you've told us
and we've seen it, it sometimes stings at a deadline
to go get somebody to give up a young player.
But in truth, this young You know, when you talk
about some of the players that are in your farm
system and or on the major league roster that are young,
you didn't have to part with them, which had to
(01:52):
which is a huge win that you got to. You
talk about an eye to the president and eye of
the future. You got both that had to be a
big win in your would imagine in the thought process
of the organization.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Absolutely, you know, in order to keep the window open
for winning, you always have to operate in the present
and the future, and we try to do that as
much as possible. And we felt like we did that here.
You know, we we got back some guys that you know,
to two of these guys going to remain on our roster.
You know, we had to give up Gusto. Uh, you
(02:24):
know the way he threw the ball with us, he
was going throwing the ball. Well, but you have to
give up something to get something, and so uh, you know,
we felt like we were definitely operating in the president
in the future and that's what we're going to do here.
And so yeah, we feel really good about it.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Dan, I'm going to get back to the Korea in
just a second. I want to get to the pitching
part of you know, the anticipation we all speculate, you're
you're you're in the moment, dealing with these teams, answering
the bat phone and doing all that. But was it
of the two, what was the what was the bigger
the bigger point I guess at the deadline? Was it
getting a picture of the names that we know that
(03:02):
have been mentioned. Was that too expensive or was it
easier not to dig into the expensive part because you
knew you were getting guys like Garcia Javier Arraghetty coming
back down the pipeline. Which one trumped the other in this.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Yeah, I would feel like getting these guys back from
the I L is you know a big part of it.
You know, you're gonna have Aregetty, who's going to pitch tonight,
He's going to come back. You have Hiri Air right
behind him, and then you have Garcia behind him, and
so getting those three guys are huge. And you know,
think about what arag Getty did last year with one
hundred and seventy one strikeouts, one hundred and forty five innings.
(03:39):
Getting that back, getting that guy back you know as
one of this he was one of the top rookies
and innings pitched and strikeouts. Yeah, so you know, when
you can get that guy back from the IL and
it wasn't an arm injury, that's a real good get.
And so you know that was massive. And you know
we got Garcia, he's throwing the ball very well. We
have Pavier, he's throwing the ball well. We're going to
(03:59):
get those two guys back. And also behind them you
have France and so you have four guys that really
helped last year that are coming back this year and
that's that's massive for us. And so the focus was
to uh, you know, not give up too much, to
get pitching and to really load up on some bats
(04:20):
and uh, you know run this thing uh all the
way through. And so we feel really good about it.
Just need to get on all cylinders. And you know,
last night you got a glimpse of what this team's gonna.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
Look like regardless of how if he pitches great, and
I'm sure that's what your expectations are. What is how
long we should we expect to see him tonight or
this later this afternoon, Spencer Araghetty, what what is there
a pitch pitch count on him? What do we expect
from him?
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Yeah, I mean he can get up to eighty pitches,
you know, that's what he's topped out at and his
rehab stints. You know, the the thing here is we
need he needs to be efficient. You know, he needs
to you know, throw strikes and get ahead of batters
and try to put him away and try to get
through these batters as quickly as possible so that the
pitch count doesn't get up there. You know, I would
(05:09):
expect that he may be a little rusty because it's
his first time, you know, back since the injury, and
so that's that that would be normal. But you know,
the key thing is to strike throwing component. I think
if he's if he's walked in and in his zone,
we'll see a good Arroghetti tonight.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
Have you seen enough from Javier to say he's ready?
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Yeah? Look like I said before, he's ninety four ninety
five with the velocity breaking ball looks good. His throwing
actions are good, The ball's coming out of his hand
very well. And yeah, I mean I would think that
one more start in the minors and you know he's
going to be ready. He looks really good.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
Are you how much how far behind in this and
in the race to get back up? Here is Garcia
from Javier?
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yeah, I think he's probably a couple starts behind, two
starts behind them, so pretty close.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
Boy, what that's a good problem to have when you overload,
when you get those guys back going good right data,
I mean, something you haven't had all year, and this
is it's got to be I know, make you a
little giddy concerned obviously because you want it to be right.
But you've got to be giddy. And part of the
reason not at the deadline to get somebody to have
a starting pitching staff. And now with that bullpen gives
(06:28):
you as formidable as in the league when they come
back and if they're right.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
Yeah, very excited about it because you know, you got
the two horses at the top with Brown and Valdez
and then now you throw in Arragetty Javier Garcia. I mean,
that's that's that sounds that's starting to sound like a
championship rotation there. And so, uh, the guys that have
(06:53):
come up has done a really good job. You know
Alexander the other night, you know, he was outstanding. We
got five from ball yesterday. So you know, even the
guys who have come up has have really added to
the mix. And so uh, you know, getting our guys
back would be pretty special.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
Data Brown asked thros GM for a few more minutes
here on his weekly visit UH at nine thirty every
single Wednesday, Dana, when did Carlos Korea jump into your
guys radar? When did you think it was feasible before
this deadline?
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Yeah, I mean, look, we started to realize that, you
know what, petits being out and it being a significant
you know, hamstring strain that you know, the possibilities were
going to be tough for him to come back. Uh,
he decided to do the rehab, which we're excited about,
and we think he's got a chance of getting back.
(07:46):
Not sure right now when, but there's an outside chance.
And so we put we put career on our radar
and you know, started talking to ownership about it because
it was going to cost some money and and so
Jim Pray being committed to you know, keeping the window
open and winning, you know, he was on board, and
so you know we dove in and so that we
(08:09):
felt like we we got our leadership back. We got
a guy back that's you know, swinging the bat well
for us right now. He can really defend and the
makeup and the leadership qualities are off the chart, and so, uh,
you know, this is an exciting time for us right now.
We're really we're we're pumped.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
All right. The let met the elephant in the room.
I got to always ask how close are we with
the big left hander?
Speaker 2 (08:34):
Man?
Speaker 1 (08:34):
I mean, you said you thought we could get him
back in August. Are we still on pace?
Speaker 2 (08:40):
Yeah? So he's looking he's looking really well. I mean,
he took a full batting practice on the field, and
so the whole thing now is we've got to increase
the intensity. So you go batting practice on the field,
You'll do some BP off the machine, you know, at
a high velocity, and then you'll you know, some lives
(09:02):
off of pitchers. And so I think he's on his
way back. He's starting to he feels really good. You
want to increase the intensity, and as long as he
can get through this, you know, he could be back
in the near future, which is, you know, a good thing.
The way our lineup is shaping up right now. Once
we add Alvarez back into it, and then shortly after
that we'll add Myers back into it, I mean, we'll
(09:25):
be on all cylinders and this team will be really
ready to go. And so I like the way it's
coming together. It's a good time of year to put
this thing together and for all your guys to come
back to go on a nice run to win the
division and get deep into the postseason.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
Again, is there something other than the obvious which we saw.
You wanted that left handed bat with pop, and Sanchez
provides it and gives you good outfield play. Is there
something other than that that you loved about him that
you said, Man, if we can pull this one off,
he's a great addition to our team. Or was it
just adding that left handed power that you wanted in
the order.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
No, that's a great question. So Sanchez is a really
good dude, I mean, well liked by his teammates, just
a good human being. And he's that guy, John that
has upside. He has the upside to really get to
some more power. We think that, you know, talking to
Centron yesterday, he thinks he can get a little bit
(10:21):
more power out of him. So, uh, you know, you
saw where he made a nice play the other day
on cutting the guy down at third base, and so
there's some upside here too. I mean, this is a
guy that's really developing and he's he's got a little
flair to him, and uh yeah, he's well liked. We
got a chance to to you know, to get this
(10:41):
guy and to get him a little bit more power,
get the upside going, and uh we think this We've
got to have him for two more years after this. Yeah,
we're we're excited about Sanchez, very excited. Dan.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
It is just as your with your baseball expertise. And
I know that'll be a decision you and Joe and
the organization may moving forward. But Paradis was playing great
baseball for you guys, He really was. And you you
know that. Hell, you're the one who traded for him.
What kind of I guess a good problem. What happens
when he comes back? Well, well, where do you play him?
(11:15):
You've got a gold glove third basement, I think in Korea?
What do you do with Paradis? Or is it a
good problem to have that you you can move him
around in the infield? What do you do?
Speaker 2 (11:24):
It's a great problem to have. Uh, and we'll cross
that bridge. We'll get there. But you have to look
at it this way too. We have infielders. All of
those guys could play multiple positions, so you know, this
would be a good problem to have. And and then uh,
you know, I just think, you know, when he comes back,
it's going to be a good thing. And and and
(11:45):
we'll figure that out when when he gets back. But uh,
he's going to be a big part of his team.
And uh, and so are the other guys, and so uh,
you know, we we could move someone to second base,
but these guys that played multiple positions over their career,
and I think that's a big part of it. And
(12:06):
that's why these guys are all like gold glovers. I
mean they're really good defenders that you could move around.
And so yeah, it's gonna be a good problem to have,
I promise it.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
Hey, Dan, all in with this. And you always talk about,
you know, catching the baseball, how important it is the defense,
And I kind of liking bullpens to great defenses in
football that got to get stops, got to get off
the field, got to get out of innings. How do
you feel about the leg The legs and arms are
well rested. Blue ball did a great job, as did
your bullpen giving you five yesterday. Where are you guys
(12:39):
at with your thought process on the bullpen and freshness?
Are they where you want them to be?
Speaker 2 (12:46):
Yeah? So this is what the beauty of getting your
starters back off the il going down the strategy projected.
These starters will go deeper into the game given our
bullpen rest that they need right before we hit the
final stretch and sprint to the end. And so, uh,
(13:07):
this is this is gonna all play out. I mean
I have a vision of this playing out where you
get your starters back, they start to go six seven
innings each. Each time they give the bullpen arrest. Those
guys are well rested. The starters are coming off being
well rested because you know they haven't pitched a ton
this year. They're coming off the I l And then
(13:29):
now you give that pen a break, and before you
know it, man, you're right down there running, uh, trying
to get to the stretch of winning the division and
getting to a stretch of deep into the postseason. So uh,
this this is an exciting time for us, just getting
these guys back off the I l uh. This is
this has a chance to really all come together for us.
(13:52):
I give Joe and his staff and some of the
young players credit beholding this thing together while we were
going through all those injuries. At one time we had
eighteen guys on the IL and you, I mean, I
don't have to tell you know you or the fans
how bad we were banged up, but we were beat
up pretty bad. And these guys all helped it together.
(14:12):
And now it's time for it all to come together
and for us to get on a run down the stretch.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
And I'd be remiss if I didn't just get this
in in thirty seconds. Dana, Lance mccollors. Health wise, where
is he and can we possibly see him in the bullpen?
Speaker 2 (14:28):
Yeah? Good question. So Lance, he's going to throw one
more side and then we are going to send him
out on a rehab and then after that rehab, we
could see him back in the big leagues. And so
he's coming along nicely. You know, he's going to get
one more side, then he'll do that rehab start and
(14:49):
then we'll make a decision at that point. But he
should be ready to come back right after that rehab start.
And so even Lance is coming back. And so look,
this this thing is really, as I mentioned, really coming
together for us, and it's an exciting time and I'm
fired up for the organization and for all of our fans.
Speaker 1 (15:11):
Yeah, you should be. After all the injury nonsense, and
to survive this and still be in first place, it's
gonna make for one hell of a last third or
so of this season. Congrats on a great trade deadline
and overcoming that the three in Fenway and now getting
back on that winning streak and then headed the Yankee
Stadium after to day. We appreciate you. Good luck on
the rest of this road trip. We'll see you back
here against Boston and we'll look forward to our conversation
(15:33):
next week.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Absolutely, thanks Jean, thank you, Beyon. Let's go Astro fans.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
There you go. Dana Brown phenomenal and has a great iphon.
Now he's got to be giddy because they're getting people
back the way you need to. I know it was long,
but we need to hear. We'll come back quickly and
then well we'll send you on your way to the
next show and Dan take it away.
