Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sports Talk seven to ninety Sean Salisbury Show here nine
(00:04):
thirty every Wednesday. Astros general manager Dana Brown joins us
coming off two in a row and they get a
chance to get back in the win. Calm tonight. We'll
get there in a second, Dana, welcome in. We're having
this conversation. We had Sean Casey on earlier, just talking
baseball and the overall, you know, part of the game
and what's going on. He had a lot of good
(00:25):
things to say about the Astros, but on the overall scope,
I know you're focused on your team and you're getting
it when it comes to pitching. Does it feel to you, Dana,
that pitching is ahead of hitting eighty ninety games into
the season. Does it feel like pitchers are getting deeper
across baseball into games and that there's more trust in them.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Yeah. I think what's happening is, you know, we have
all these specialists, you know, coming out of the bullpen.
You know, of course the starters are pretty good, and
then you know late in the game, you just get
these guys coming out of the pen starting in the
sixth inning. In the ball up to ninety four plus,
and now I think that makes it a little bit
more difficult. You know. Usually back in the day, you know,
(01:08):
the old school guys say you see a guy come
in and drawing ninety four, ninety five, and I mean
that was a big thing. Now, you know guys that
are throwing ninety four or one hundred and two, you know,
coming in late, it makes it a little bit more difficult.
But I just think the added velocity and the movement
to the pitches, you know, make it a little bit
(01:28):
more difficult for the hitters.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
And a lot of time data. By the time you
get to the third time around, you've already made the
change to a specialist, so you don't get to see
you go, you know, fifth inning guy, sixth any guy
or six seventh, eighth, ninth, so you're not getting locked
in on one guy, which obviously is pitching advantage.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Correct, Yeah, because what happens is, you know, once you
get used to seeing a guy you know how the
ball is moving that day, and now all of a
sudden he's out of the game, and it's like, oh man,
I got to work with this next guy. And you know,
I mean, you have some familiarity with you knowing at
video and different things, but nothing like being in a.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Box the day of the game, Dana, Can you're pitching
and I understand Hunter Brown who's been phenomenal. You know,
he grinded through six and getting going, wasn't at his best,
but he's still pretty damn good. Can you guys your
team sustain this type of pitching from starting pitching all
the way to hater notwithstanding last night, for the rest
of this season? Is it is it logical to think
(02:24):
that way? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (02:27):
You know the thing is we're gonna get some help
from some of our guys that are gonna come off
the il right now. Our guys have been grinding this whole,
you know, first half, and you know, hats off to
these guys of you know how they have pitched, and
you know you're gonna have days like that, you know
the old Sam this. You know you're gonna have days
like yesterday. You know, It's just it goes with the territory.
(02:50):
It's a grind of one hundred and sixty two and
you're not gonna dominate your opponents every time out.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Dana, What is when it comes to the pitching and
sustaining it in injuries or you can even include the
every day guy, the Painias and the Jordan Alvarez. Who's
the first one back from this injury to the injury stuff?
Is it Penya? Is it Garcia? Who's going to be
the first one we see of a regular guy and
a picture the guys we know who's first coming back
(03:17):
off the injured list?
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Yeah, I mean I would think it's gonna be Jeremy Pinya.
You know, you know, the other guys are probably a
little bit behind Pinya, but I would say probably Pinya
as of today.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
Do we know a time frame?
Speaker 2 (03:36):
No, we don't have a time frame. But like I mean,
I talked to Penia yesterday. He's feeling really good, and
so you understooing lower body workouts and exercises to keep
them to keep him in shape. But we're not allowing
him to do anything upper body yet. That may take
a few more days.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
With Jordan step close, I mean give reports when we hear,
you know, when you're talking to Robert Ford and the
guys over the weekend and coming. So how are we progressing?
Is it quantum leaps? Is it a steady thing? Where's
he at?
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Yeah? So he's not hitting yet. The hand is feeling
really good. Of course, we got the good news that
you know, with the X rays and I mean actually
say the imaging, we got the good news that you know,
there was nothing related to the fracture. It was inflammation.
He got the injection and so he's feeling pretty good
(04:30):
right now. And I think you know, right now, he
can hold the bat, but he can't swing the bat.
We're just you know, you're sitting around watching TV. You
can you can hold the bat in your hand, just
can't swing yet. And so once we get to the
point where you could take some tea work and then
some soft toss and then we could, you know, hopefully
get this thing moving. But we're gonna let him heal
(04:53):
completely and then we're gonna get him some activity.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
Dana, just on pure time, what do we the July?
What ninth today? Is there any any chance or is
it logical for us to say, okay, expect him in August.
If he's gonna come back, should we expect him in July?
Or is that just just on sheer timing that just
can't work getting him back in the lineup.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
Yeah, I mean it's tough to put you know, a
timeline on it because it's gonna be Look, once he
feels good enough, we're going to try to extradite it
as as quickly as possible to get him back. But
it's tough to put a timeline on it right now
until we see him swing a bat. He's got to
feel good the following day and things like that, so
(05:38):
you know it's gonna it's gonna be a waiting game.
But I would I would sense that we would get
some deals, put the time on it over the next week.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
And probably I would also imagine that for that this
is going to be when he's one hundred percent and
then he agrees to it. But when you guys see
pictures and images say he's one hundred percent, that's when
he comes back in when he's feeling good, not at
eighty or ninety percent.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
I would imagine, yeah, we really want him to be
one hundred percent. You know, although you know, once you
start hitting all of these players, you know they rarely
feel like they're a hundred right, But right you know,
when you're coming off a long layoff, you probably feel
one hundred percent for about a week and then you
start to get a little bit more tired. Uh. But
at the end of the day. You know, we want
(06:22):
him to feel really good, to be able to take
consistent swings at intense levels back to back days with
no soreness. And once he gets to that point, you know,
then we can cut him loose.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
All right, give me your expertise, which is your the
ability to scout talent, which is phenomenal. All Right, we're
sitting around and I haven't watched baseball this year. Let's
just pretend like I haven't, and I ask you about
Yiner Diaz scouting report and twenty twenty five at the plate.
What are you saying to me?
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Yeah, I would say that Daz just need to shrink
the zone a little bit. Sometimes he gets a little
bit outside the zone. You know, we had a really
nice long talk with him yesterday about you know, the
success that he's had in the past, and you know
that success came from when he really shrunk the zone
and he stayed within that zone and and really his
(07:20):
power numbers were really good. Uh, you know when he
when when he swung at balls that are in his zone. Now,
you know, pictures are pitching him tough. You know, they
get the book on you and they try to exploit you.
And uh, but Yiner is getting to the point where
he's starting to realize this more and more, and so
he's just you know, he's had some good games and
(07:41):
then he's followed up with a not some good thing.
I think he's on the right track right now. He's
focused and he knows a lot what the pitchers are
trying to do to him. And the whole key for
him is stay within the strike zone, because you do
your most damaged when you do that.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
Danny got Dana Brown Astros for a couple more minutes
here for his weekly visit at nine thirty on Sports
Talk seven ninety Dana big sweep of the Dodgers. I
know the last two haven't turned out the way you've
wanted it, but that's why you got four more before
the All Star break. I on this show have talked
about how you have to stay on guard, meaning the Astros.
They've got a nice lead, they're playing really good baseball,
but you can't get into vacation mode the week before
(08:20):
the All Star Game. You know that it's human nature,
the cas well, it's vacation. Well, when I say vacation
all Star break, how difficult is it to keep players
in that mindset? You got to lead. You're playing good,
You've been some injuries. How tough is it to six
games beforehand to get guys locked in to almost treat
it like it's the last six games of the season
and you're in a battle because these are important and
(08:42):
they do count. Where's the mindset going into an All
Star game for your team and overall? What would you
say to them to get them in that mindset?
Speaker 2 (08:51):
Yeah? Two things. Don't take your foot off the gas
and sprint to the finish line.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
Are you guys doing both? Are you doing both right now? Dana? Yeah,
you guys doing them both.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
I think we're doing both. I mean, we had an
opportunity to win both of those games. And you know,
it was a tough break last night. You know, a
ball that was hit out probably don't go out of
most ballparks and went out of ours, of course because
of the close crows for boxes. But you know that's
part of the game. You know, you're gonna win some,
(09:22):
you're gonna lose some, and and and our guys have
been in this grind all year, so I'm not I'm
not worried. I think we do have our foot on
the gas. You know, we were down last night, we
came back, we tied the game, and so these guys
are still grinding, you know, make no mistake about it.
Uh you know, we got beat last night, and we
got beat the night before. But you know, the guys
(09:43):
are still grinding and they have their foot on the gas.
And you know, at the end of the day, Uh,
you know, we're gonna try to finish this thing and
sprint to the break and then take our little time off,
which is much needed, you know for a team that's
beat up injury wise. But I'm very proud of what
the guys have done. I mean, these guys have grinded
(10:04):
through all of these injuries. You know, we're eighteen games over,
five hundred, six and a half games up in the division,
and so these guys have really really grinded, and I
would say they have their foot on the gas, no
doubt about it, and we're sprinting to the break.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
Hey, Dan, it does it help? Like you're getting ready
to tell, I mean, obviously got Cleveland day, but then
you get the Texas Rangers, who are a four hour
away rival. We know that. You know that when you
came here, you see it. It does it help to
keep you straight mindset wise, that you're playing them the
last three games before the All Star break. It's like,
if you thought about maybe taking a little break, we
(10:42):
can't because it matters even more so because you want
to kick their ass because it's a rival and they're
in the division.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Yeah, nothing better in competition, you know, the good competition
when you're you know, you're trying to get to the
end of a you know, like a break or at
the end of the season. You want to play the best,
and you know, I think guys enjoy that competition and
they welcome that competition. And I think our guys, you know,
are locked in, you know, particularly because of the rivalry.
(11:12):
So yeah, I think the guys are locked in for sure.
And it's good to have these games right here towards
the end and we we just need to get the
job done and finish up strong. And I'm proud of
what the boys have done. That's first half.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
Are are the phones ringing yet? Tade? Trade? Trade wise?
Have you have you answered a lot of calls and
dealing with that? And how active will you guys be?
Speaker 2 (11:34):
Yeah, I feel we'll try to be active. Of course,
we want to do something that really makes sense for
the club. Uh. You know, we've been in touch with
a lot of teams since mid May, to be honest,
and so we've been, you know, having conversations as to
what we think, you know, we need to do to
make this team better. And so those internal conversations.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
That we we have on a daily basis, actually we
have them also during the game when we're in our
you know, the GM's box, and so we're always having
conversations about what we need to do, uh, to make
the team better.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
You talked about proud and as well you should be.
And I asked you this last week or the week before,
and I'll ask you again. Are where you are now?
What's your biggest in your crawl? What's the one thing
if there is one that's bothering you the most not
named injuries right now? About your team?
Speaker 2 (12:28):
Yeah, I mean, look, I think you know, the offense
was you know a little bit of a conversation, you know,
but we've really started to heat it up and guys
are seeing like a lot better pitches. You know. Do
we have some guys that are turning a corner? You know,
we have Christian Walker who's you know, started to heat
up you know, and so you know, a little bit
(12:52):
a few days back, I thought like, look, once this
hot offense start to get on all cylinders, and think
about it. We got on all cylinders, yep, on a
little bit of a run, and we increased that lead.
We built a little pad over five hundred and so
we've done a lot of good things, and so you know,
I just want to finish this first half, you know,
(13:13):
and continue to swing the bats. And you know how
good things could happen because our pitching has been really good.
They'd been carrying us, you know, and in some days
they're not going to have it, you know, like last night,
you know, we didn't have it. But you know, we
wrote those guys, you know, the whole first half, and
you know, those guys have been in the grind for us,
(13:33):
and so like we we want to finish up strong.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
Here would were you okay, and I know Jill makes
these decision, Were you okay with the extra work for
Hater coming back out?
Speaker 2 (13:44):
Yeah? I mean we're one pitch away from getting out
of that inning, you know, of course, and so I
felt like if we got one more opportunity to come
in and get our offense back in there with a
tie game that we could have scratched a run across,
and so you know, I was definitely okay with that.
Probably gonna shut Hater down for the night. I would
(14:05):
think that he may not be able to pitch tonight
or not be available because we went with you know,
we we tried to grind that that went out and
get them a little extra but it didn't work out.
But I was definitely okay with that decision for sure.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
And and Danna, just to validate what you said, the
home run last night, the Grand Slam would have only
been out of one ballpark and that was the one
that they were playing last night. So just so you
know that it's not exactly like it was roped into
the upper tank. So you were exactly right about that
with the with the home run.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
Yeah, I mean that's kind of like how it is.
You know, we we we're the beneficiaries of that oftentimes
because we play eighty one games often, you know, because
we played eighty one games here. But you know, sometimes
it's gonna it's gonna come back to get you as well.
But you know, we understand that going in. I mean,
our guys understand it. And uh, you know we're gonna
(14:57):
win a lot of ball games because of it, and
and we'll just lose a couple. So it goes with
the territory.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
It's been a hell of a run the first half.
We look forward to the rest of this one and
then coming back out of the All Star break. Always
appreciate your time, my friend, and we'll talk to you
next Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
Absolutely. Look, I'm fired up. The team's playing well, we're
gonna get these last four games. Let's grind through them
and let's go ask so fans where we're heating up there.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
You go, Dana, We appreciate it. We'll talk to you
next week. That's Dana Brown, always for his weekly visit
and bringing it and thinks that pay you will be
the first one back, Dan, So we'll come back and
discuss if we wrap this up quickly when we come
back here on Sports Talk seven ninety
