Speaker 1 (00:00):
I live, but the Sean Salisbury Show continued, well, maybe
even a little bit of spots. I don't know, who knows.
As we continue along here on the Sean Salisbury Show,
Dan Matthews in for Brian a lima triple, Emmanuel Elmore
also to Sean himself. Let's head out to the phone lines.
(00:22):
My good buddy Matt McLaren, part of the invasion ten
to one every day on the ticket up there in Dallas,
joining us here, one.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Of the more legendary lived in Dallas for about a
decade or ten years, and if you look across the country,
this is one of the more legendary sports radio stations
in the country. Honestly, they do a fantastic job in
half forever. I'm sure Matt and those guys are tired
of collecting all those awards they get over there.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
Marconi is upon Marconi's up there in DFW for these guys.
Matt's good to hear from you again, man. But let's
just start off. I mean the way that Texan fans
are feeling down here, it's kind of a little bit
of a mixed bag all the expectations coming into this season.
But in Dallas there's always expectations, but I gotta believe
this offseason was a little bit different because I'm sure
(01:09):
every day you all on the air were like, Jerry,
where are the moves? Like you're not there yet? Like
what are we doing? I thought we were all in,
Like how are Cowboy fans kind of approaching Monday night scheme?
I think is where I'm kind of getting to.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Well, I would imagine. First off, thanks for having me.
I appreciate it you guys, and Sean, You're not wrong.
Speaker 4 (01:27):
We do enjoy it. The Marconi's quite a bit.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Hey, you guys dominate brother. All of us are envious.
You've been doing it for so long and killing it,
So it's great to you.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
Guys.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Do a hell of a job.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Man, you bet, But man, I'll tell you guys, and
this is probably the truth. If people have tickets that
are Cowboys fans that are going to the game, they're
trying to sell them to Texans fans. And if you're
like me and you're just gonna watch the game, you're
just hoping that they don't get slaughtered. I mean, it's
not a good feeling right now. This is a horrible team.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
I don't know where they're gonna go from here.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
It just feels and you mentioned it, Dan, I mean,
it's one of those things where in the off season,
I think most of us could point to a variety
of spots on the roster man you.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
Could have done this, probably need to do this.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
I don't know if i'd go with that right there,
And Jerry apparently knows better than everybody. And I think
a lot of us, most of the guys on the
station figured the Cowboys would drop off.
Speaker 4 (02:17):
I don't think anybody thought this.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Would happen, but we knew that another man, even a
double digit win season was going to be unlikely, just
because of their inactivity to do anything in the offseason
and the guys that they lost, And sure enough it
plays out on the field, and everybody feel like even
fans are sitting there going, Jerry, how did you not
see this coming?
Speaker 4 (02:37):
Yeah, I've have seen this coming in the off season.
He did nothing.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Yeah, Matt, it feels to me. And we'll get to
Jerry in a second my next question. But it feels
to me. And we all know how great a marketer
Jerry is, and he's the face of the France. I
never liked the owner to be the face of the franchise.
That tells me something's wrong with players, coaches wise. But
I digress is it almost felt arrogant this offseason because
in truth, Matt Mattie here all the time and you
(03:01):
see it every day. This really when you go player
for player, depth for depth down the roster, they're not
that talented. There's pieces that are talented the entire but
the some they're not really that good. So you were
right they were going to take a step back anyway, right, Yeah,
I think so.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
I mean even and again, even with full health, if
it hadn't missed a month, if DeMarcus Lawrence never got hurt.
People forget those guys were on the field, the defense
was healthy when Baltimore ran all over them and had
them blown out going into the fourth quarter. They were
all in the field when New Orleans blew them out
of the building. So yeah, I think when you look
at this, you knew you were probably an injury away
(03:39):
from disaster, which this has turned into. But even then,
to your point, if health was never an issue with
this team, I still think they would have struggled at
best to get to nine lands.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Yeah, after that big season last season, at least regular
season and how great they were at home and this
year it's been anything but that. So I want to
look ahead about Jerry Jones. And people ask me all
the time, Matt, I'm sure you guys get it a
ton of times, is well, if Mike McCarthy gets fired,
what are we going to do? Well, we're going to
go after like Bill Belichick or one of those guys.
(04:11):
And I contend here that you're never going to see
that as long as Jerry's making the higher. Why and
Jerry's always going to make the higher is Jerry never
wants anybody in that building, in that position to have
more power than him, and a guy like Belichick would
take away from him be in the face of the organization.
I don't think they're ever going to hire a guy
like that, do you No?
Speaker 3 (04:30):
And I don't think that they may want to. But
to your point, I don't think that Bill Belichick would
want to come here and work under a guy. Right,
You're exactly right. Jerry's not going to give up the control.
And you kind of look at the coaches that he's
brought in from Wade who ever since Parcels really who
was the last Belichick type figure You know, you look
at Wade, who was a yes man. You look at
Jason Garrett, who of course had been affiliated with the
(04:51):
franchise for forever, who is going to do whatever they needed.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
And then Mike McCarthy. I think people forget this.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
Mike McCarthy when he got let go of the Packer
he said he would never allow someone else to call
plays again, that he thought that was a big mistake
that he.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
Made at the end of his Packers tenure. So what's
he do.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
He comes to Dallas, gets hired, and he's like, oh, yeah,
Kellen Moore's gonna call the plays.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
It'll be great.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
That obviously came from Jerry when they kept him around originally.
And then, of course you get to the point where
things aren't going your way, they get rid of Kellen Moore,
McCarthy finally takes over play calling, and I mean, the
whole thing is broken.
Speaker 4 (05:24):
I don't know what they're gonna do with coach.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
I think a lot of us would love for a
guy like a Ben Johnson from the Lions, Right, y'all
have a guy down there we'd love to have and
Bobby Slowick. But do those guys want to come and
have the structure in place above them that exists in Dallas.
I don't know if they do.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
And let's not Dan, you I know you got stuff
from that here is let's not forget Dave Campbell, who
I love. Dave was a great assistant. Dave Campbell was
the head coacher. He's never going to let anybody challenge
the threat of more credit than me. And that's just
Jerry's DNA Well. I mean, you know, Matt Kinds at
that same point. I mean, we've got a guy that
work with on the Afternoon Show here, Adam Clanton, and
(06:03):
he compared Jerry yesterday to Vince McMahon, and I mean,
you know, just talking about it's all the pomp and circumstances,
everything the family works around him.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
Kind of same deal there in Dallas. But no, it's
a mess, no doubt about it. I mean, you know,
it's not only this season though, Matt. I mean, I've
got to believe kind of the way that you're talking
here and maybe the way that Cowboy fans feel in
general that I mean, is it kind of a little
bit of a fear up there of this is a
precursor of what's to come here For the next few years.
Speaker 4 (06:32):
I think so.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
I think there's a lot of people that were against
the long term back contract four more years. With the
money that was invested, there's people who can look at
it and you know, Sean's right. I mean, this roster
doesn't have a lot of depth. There are some high
level pieces that they have invested in. They're going to
invest in Micah and then behind that, you know, Trayvon Diggs.
(06:53):
There's a variety of guys that can stand out at positions,
but they just don't have the depth. And when you
look at that, they're not one player away, they're not
two players away. It looks like they're going to get
a pretty high draft pick. We'll see what happens with that.
But it just feels like this roster is going to
have to go through a couple of years, which most
of the time the cyclical NFL. I mean, they were
(07:16):
twelve and five for three seasons in a row, had
it laid out perfectly for him last year.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
And.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
Late they laid at home in the playoffs against green
Bay and man that lost. Honestly, that lost to green
Bay feels like it broke this thing, and yet.
Speaker 4 (07:32):
The culture is not going to change.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Ye how you got the same leaders are in place
and they're not going to go anywhere.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
So it does feel that way, Dan, it feels like this.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
It feels like we may be headed towards the bottom
of the NFL for the next three or four years.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
Matt, is there any scenario? And Mike McCarthy had a
good run in Green Bay? It's not working. There's buy
in missing. It feels like, where's Waldle around that team
right now? And just from a distance, you know, well
who's in charge that this guy was leading?
Speaker 4 (08:00):
What are we doing here?
Speaker 2 (08:01):
Why not here? Is there any scenario you see that
Jerry says Mike's coming back in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 4 (08:09):
There's no way I'm barring. Okay, we say that, Matt.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
You and I both know the temptations for Jerry to
be there will be there. You and I both know that.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
I mean, it just feels like he let him go
into the final year of his contract. I mean, the
whole coaching staff is on one year deals or essentially
the last year of their deal if they're not and
so it just feels like there were a lot of
high expectations this year and Jerry didn't give them anything
to work with truly to achieve those expectations. It's almost
like he wanted them to fail, like you set them
(08:42):
up right to fail and now they're failing. So yeah,
I personally would be shocked if they kept Mike McCarthy around.
But barring some sort of miraculous run, which isn't going
to happen, then yeah, I think the whole coaching staff
is gone.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
Two part for you, man, to get you out the
door again. Matt McClaren from the Ticket in Dallas, part
of the invasion ten to one every single weekday up
there with Donovan Lewis with the Cowboys. I mean, what
is something that you look at from this matchup and say, hey,
if they can do this, they come out of Monday
night with a win. But the second part of it
(09:19):
as well is the Texans. What do you think you
guys look at with the Sexans team and say, man,
that could be pretty tough to overcome in this one.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Man, I hate to be facetious, but I wanted to
say everything, but I mean, honestly, man, it's bad and
it's one of those things. I think we all thought
Cooper Rush would look a little better than he did
last week and he was just not good. So you've
got to hope that his ball location, that he's making
passes that receivers can catch. I mean, this Cowboys offense
(09:51):
is I mean, you guys know this. They're bottom five
and virtually every statistic, every metric you want to look at,
they're one of the worst offenses at the bottom of
the league. I don't think that's going to change against
the Houston defense, and the main problem becomes and it's
not just Houston, it will be next week against Washington.
Down the line, where can this offense score enough points
(10:13):
to win a football game? And when I say enough points,
I'm talking can they get the twenty? Think if they
can get the twenty, then you got a defense who
with Micah back. Now, they looked solid in the first
half against the Eagles last week with the five sacks.
Speaker 4 (10:24):
They forced two turnovers in the first.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
Half and it just felt like, Okay, the defense was
going out there making some plays, put in the offense
in good positions. They had a turnover where they had
the ball at the six yard line. The defense gave
them the ball at the six yard line and they
got nothing out of it. And so if the offense
is going to do that. I think the defense in the.
Speaker 4 (10:43):
Second half against the Eagles kind of said, well.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
Okay, guys, we did what we could. You obviously don't
have anything, and it just feels like we can't run
the ball, we can't pass the ball, we can't stop
the run. So how do you beat a team when
you can't do those things?
Speaker 4 (10:58):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Yeah, it's pretty tough, no doubt about it. Real quick man,
Any chance that Trey Lance, I know, he got a
little work. Any chance at Trey Lance if the struggle
is real I mean like it has been and the
quarterback's not playing well, that Trey Lance sees extensive action.
I'm not sure it's gonna do much, uh do much
for it? But is there any chance that we may
see a two quarterback thing this week on Monday Night?
Speaker 4 (11:20):
I think so.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
I think that they'll run some packages for him, and
if it starts to get out of hand, I think
you'll definitely see Trey Lance.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
Come into the game kind of like you did at
the end of the Eagles, right.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
I mean as far as the rest of the season,
I think after the Giants game on Thanksgiving, when they
lose their next three, you very well, may see Trey
Lance one hundred percent of the time.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
Matt McClaren to take a futures bet. Matt said, they're
losing the next three. I'll go to bet on it.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
There we go.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
Oh yes, yeah, brother, we appreciate.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
It quite a few times, no doubt about it. Again,
Matt McLaren join us from the ticket up there in DFW. Matt,
you're the best buddy. Great to catch up with you
as always, and uh believe we're in line for a
beer too next time we see each other.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Keep that man, keep up that great keep up that
great work down there. Matt, appreciate you.
Speaker 4 (12:07):
Man, appreciate you guys. Thanks so much.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
I appreciate it there up there.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
We're going to say we're you know, because what was
it the guy up there when the you had Ranger
fans coming out of the stadium after Altuve hit the
home run, he had the line of just remember up
here in DFW, we flush our toilets for you to
be able to.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
Show here here.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
Yeah, you know, that's that's part of that's part of
the whole Houston Dallas dynamic there.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
But no mess, thanks Matt. Yeah, good stuff. It's got
to be frustrating. Well, it's got to be good fodder,
but it's got to be frustrating. And he said, fans
are selling tickets and they'd like to sell them because
that's the thing.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
I mean, you know, because the Cowboys. If nothing else,
you know, the people who can't stand Cowboy fans, it's
because of how boisterous and you know, just how arrogant
they are in terms of, hey, we're the Cowboys. I mean,
you've heard it right there from Matt. There's not a
ton of that right now. There's a lot of feeling of, well,
kind of hope we just keep it close in this one. So,
I mean, if nothing else, that's a little bit of
(13:05):
a advantage confidence wise that you feel like you got
if you're a Texan fanning heading into that building on
Monday night, because you know, if you're wearing battle red,
Liberty white, and deep steel blue, you're feeling a lot
better than people who are going in there wearing silver
and silver and blue.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
This would be the I'm just saying this. I don't
think it's going to happen by any stretch. I've actually
picked them to lose the last two games the Texans
against the Jets and against Detroit. I do believe that
this would be the worst loss of the year if
the Cowboys, even though it's the arrival, they're down, you know,
the up the interstate four hours away, it's the Cowboys.
(13:44):
All that that should bring out even more in you.
If they lose this game, it would rank up with
the Carolina if not worse than the Carolina Panthers loss
because of who the Cowboys are.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
Well, it also too, I mean you just talked about
like the interstate prize that you have, the in state pride,
not interstate we are in state.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
That would be part of it as well. That Texan
fans would be like listening to it all year. No
matter what success you have, you'll have to hear it
all your long. The truth is, if you play your best,
you should curb stomp them. And the way they've played
at home this year, the Cowboys that acts like they're
spotting you a touchdown before you even get started.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
That's the way they've been playing this year. So we'll
see if it breaks down that way on Monday night.
All right, coming up next, get back into the Texans conversation, Rockets,
you want to interweave that in. You can do so
as well seven one three two one two five, seven ninety.
A lot of good stuff from matt as well that
we can pick up on the other side right here
on the Sean Salisbury Show. Dan Matthews in for Brian Lima.
(14:41):
This is Sports Talk seven ninety
