Splitting their last 10 games 5-5, taking the series win over the Red Sox but falling drastically to the Orioles, the Astros seem to have hit a rough patch as we begin to enter the back stretch of the season. Still atop the AL West Division on account of the Phillies strafing off the Mariners another game, the Stros suffer another horrific shutout to Detroit with a final score of 10-0. With injuries beginning to take a toll and offensive production becoming an issue again, Sean and Dan share the direction they believe the Astros may be headed in if they cannot turn things around before the postseason arrives.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
As I mentioned, it's both embarrassing and telling it for
this team. And you touched on this a little bit
in the last segment. This is a team who looks
mentally and physically run down right now. And that's not
an excuse. I mean, you know what is it? Fatigue
makes cowards of us all well. I mean, this is
a team that it seems like of all of the

(00:21):
injuries they've had this year, two of them now have
really hurt them, and it doesn't look like that they
know how to get this thing back on track. This
lineup ever since he Soak Brettis went out, has not
been the same.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
It's been average at best.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
Maybe every once in a while put together a good performance,
but it's not a consistently productive group. And inn Josh
Hader and the bullpen, that's completely thrown off the rhythm
for everybody else where. You knew that you get it
to pretty much the eighth and ninth inning, with the
way that Brian Abray you can pitch and the way
that Hater has pitched in the ninth that it was
going to be over now it's pretty much a my god,

(00:59):
just run out the time, like, just get to the
twenty seventh out and hopefully we have more runs than
they do. That's the way that it's looking right now
for this team.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Okay, how are you gonna fix it? How are you
fixing this? I don't know if there is a fix
right now?

Speaker 3 (01:11):
Unfortunately, Okay, with the collateral damage that comes from both
hitting pitching right on the pitching side, if you don't
start getting better starting I mean, yes, six seven ining's,
but there's also here's one thing.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
You can still go seven innings and grind it out
or six innings.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
But if you give up seven runs, but you're going
long because you haven't give up a lot of you know,
you haven't pitched a lot the pitch counts that they
need you to extend, that's still not good pitching.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Do you get my point? Right?

Speaker 3 (01:39):
I know you use up innings to save it, but oh, well, man,
he pitched six innings. Well what was the score when
he went out? Eighth one?

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Right? So there's that I do agree with it.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Get Mike, you know, I'm a I can't stand when
a guy gets the five innings and ninety pitches and
he's going good, pull him out because well you're five
and a third, you're a hero now and the way
rules and the way we set up the optics of baseball. No,
you're not a hero in five innings. Sorry, but you
didn't do your job. The starting pitcher's supposed to get
beyond five. But regardless, but if you pitch six strong

(02:10):
and you can go seven, great. If you pitch six
innings you get the six and two thirds and grind
it out. But gave up nine hits, seven runs, walk three,
struck out four and you're down seven to one. Was
it a good outing or just a long outing?

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Yeah? You just really just ran out the time. That's
all you did.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
Now, if you're a pitcher and you're thinking about it,
don't you know? If you're Hunter Brown, you got to
go tonight. And I'm sure you think this all the time,
But there's a different mentality when you got a nine
to nothing leader, a zero zero leading, you're pitching against
a guy who's one in seventeen or a guy who's
Trek Schooble, big difference, and a Hunter Brown. When you're
facing Hunter Brown, you know it's going to be rough
going if you're Detroit or anybody else.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
But is there not an extra bit.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
An extra hint of if not more than a hint
of I know I gotta go good. I love my teammates,
but let's face fact, dude, I've been on football teams, right.
I love my teammates, and your defense couldn't get off
the field. And you knew to listen. And I'll tell
you this now, I'll never forget. We're getting ready to
play a game at home.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Run.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
Our first two or three running backs are hurt. Rob
Robert was out, Robert Smith. We was down to Brian Billick,
our offensive coordinator.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Game. We're playing I think the Saints at home in Minnesota.
We're going through the week. You know one of our
starting receives. Do we are limited? Right? Well, you know
we can't run it.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
We're down to the point where it's we were basically
one dimension before the game. Brian Billa comes up. We walked,
you know, as we always did, kind of walk and
talk before a game. You're warming up and he says,
you and me today, my man, He said, main't got much.
It wasn't dogging the play. We didn't got much to
work with. So we're gonna hits you and me, meaning
be prepared to drop back. You're gonna get hit in
the mouth and take you gotta let a rip right.

(03:42):
I'll never forget how he said it, and I thought
about it. It wasn't a knock on it, but he
just knew that it was one of those that well see.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
And so what was my thought is we got to produce, right.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
So if you're a pitcher and you're thinking, you're always thinking,
got to keep it in. So the anxiety and stress
that it puts on you, which you put on yourself.
But the intensity goes up as the season goes on
and the competition gets tougher. Pitching against Detroit's easier than
pitching or tougher than pitching against Colorado. Okay, so that
goes So there's that, and then there's this ability. I
gotta keep pitching. I gotta keep pitching. Why because I

(04:14):
can't keep taxing a bullpen because if you don't pitch longer,
even if you're not pitching, well, we got to pitch
you longer, even though it would be time for a
bullpen guy. But we can't get to the bullpen guy
because right now we're getting our ass kicked in its
six to one, and I need you to go a
few mornings, which is going to make you more tired
because you don't have your stuff, and then you're gonna
start looking at tape saying what am I doing here?
Something wrong with mechanics? My mechanics, and then bingo, bullpen

(04:34):
is taxed. And now you get to a game like
last night and Joe, we got to keep pitching Chuck McCormick. Okay, Chasmo,
I'm sure goes out there and does, but I'm sure
he also it's getting to the point.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
Did you hear the broadcast?

Speaker 3 (04:47):
Hell, it got to the point where Todd and Blummer
on TV side when oh, Chaz has got to be
frustrated about that pitch, almost a.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
Like, oh they were certain they were really deep, Dan deep, right,
that's what I'm saying this so much?

Speaker 3 (05:04):
Oh man, that's gonna really carry over to the next
you know, almost to the point. And it was good.
You had to add add some comment. I liked what
they did, but you got to the point, you don't
you think there's also got to be a point where
the guys is listen. I know it's funny once in
a while you just got your ass handed ty, But
I was thinking about McCormick going out there again. I
almost feel like looking at like again, good gracious. I
know he may not be thinking this, but it's almost

(05:25):
to the point of embarrassment.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
No, I was embarrassing.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
It becomes did it becomes gimmick little league stuff when
you got to run him for the it's.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
Like, here, he're the Savannah Banana. Let's call it what
it is here without the flare in the dance ladies,
gentlemen of Saint Paul Saints, right, Savannah Banna. Is we're
gonna run you out there again? Dude, Oh, I'm going
to okay, right out there, go out there, and it's
almost like you're like, it's like again, it's I'm the
guinea pig. I'm gonna go out there and keep throwing
it up there and somebody's gonna hammer it, or somebody's

(05:54):
gonna get a blue pit, or I'm gonna strike somebody
out and I'm gonna be up tomorrow. The highlights you're
gonna save for the third time in games. Chas McCormick
takes the mound again, Well, I mean, it really becomes
a point. And I know the answer to this, but
as a fan or anybody else watching this team, you
almost want to yell, do you.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Have any pride? Like, seriously, do you have any pride?
I do one of them? They happen like Dan and
I talk.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
Is one game, Okay, you get beat for They're gonna
happen a couple times during the year to everybody where
you just don't got it. But dude, what happens is
when it's like this, you're starting to think just don't
got it?

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Well where to go? I mean, do you have any
of it?

Speaker 3 (06:30):
And then the other side of that collateral damage is
if you're continuing not to hit, what do you do?
Mess around with the lineup, move people around, and then
as a hitter, what do you start doing. I gotta
squeeze the sawdust out of this damn thing because we
can't keep letting Hunter Brown pitching a three to one game.
Eventually it becomes too much. Well, we got to spot

(06:52):
him some so he can have some non stressful, non
leverage innings where ah, you just gave up back to
back home runs, but he's still good. We're up seven
to two now, two solo jobs back to back. So listen,
you can call it what you say. Yes, the injuries,
I know, but if we said all along the thing.
The Astros are resilient, they got grit, They're tough. They

(07:12):
somehow pulled the stick together and do all this, And
I mean you can count on them.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
They're gonna go.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
The one thing they've never made is excuses, and we
can't make them for them. Injuries happen the Dodgers. There's
good Dodgers. Now's a day to day back and forth
struggle with the Padres. Padres don't trade, Dylan sees now
they're at the Dodgers are scrambling around trying to keep there.
Dave Roberts, we need more, you know, talking about urgency.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
So what is it. Listen, We're not in the clubhouse
every day. But I know this.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
The optics on TV look like I'm watching The Bugs
Bunny Roadrunner Comedy Hour.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
At the plate.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
It's the Bugs Bunny with the guys strike one, strike two,
strike three. Now I've put the gift up where they're
walking around the bases last night, I'd like, here's another run,
Y's right, and then but on the other side of it,
you could put up the second gift on the other side.
In that same Bugs Bunny cartoon shows the ball boom
swings through it. Bugs bunny throwing, you know, Connie Thumb
and those big fellows to death, and they can't hit

(08:09):
it swinging right through it. Guys are striking out. That's
on the other side with the other team pitching, where
the Astros can't hit.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
Eleven strikeouts last night. But bye by, but by does matter.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
Don't change your plate approach, right, you know, trust your swing,
do all of that kind of stuff. And remember bat
strike out again with runners on the corners in one out.
But just remember, batting average doesn't matter, Dan, That's what
they've told us. Batting average swinging miss is the same
as a groundball. But at least on a ground ball out,
guess what happens you you at least put stress on
the infield apt to make a play.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
And but batting average doesn't matter. Although the five of
the top six teams in baseball a week ago where
guess guess what they were the top five batting averages
in baseball. But it does not matter. Okay, what matters
is putting the ball in play. You can't, you just can't.
You're not gonna beat how many times this year? Well,
in just two of the games. Flarity's good? Howd Flarity

(08:59):
pay this year, he's had a rough goal of it
time third time around. As you saw the stat on
the board they put up there, you know they're getting
into a clip of like three fifteen, three thirteen somewhere
in there. Struck you out nineteen they go and Flaerty's good,
but he hasn't had a good season. And how about
that rookie with Baltimore I told you about. He perfect
gamed you for eight or for what seven? He got
through the eighth and one hit is what I'm saying

(09:21):
through one here, but had chance perfect game if it's
not for a former teammate. So with that in mind,
they've done a lot this year, he's saying, Oh, this
guy's not of allowing guys that have play an average
make them look like they're in the cy Young Hunt.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (09:36):
Yeah, I mean, and that's the frustrating part of all
the changes. So we can go back to the oh man,
you know, glass half full doing it. They're getting healthy.
The problem is some of the health that they've had.
We're still waiting on Javier and he was sick and
hasn't you know, waiting for him to continue to extend.
Spencer Araghetty's had a rough goal of it. Dubin coming
back has been awful. Saw Taylor Scott last night and
I'm not I can't do what they do, but it

(09:58):
can't analyze it and they're not waking up happy today.
So it's not anything they don't know. But you can't
get beat like that three games in a row and
call yourself a World Series type team.

Speaker 2 (10:07):
Well, perhaps a card has not got a play again.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
Should I say yeah for the Astros And maybe it
can be and we'll try to see if they can
pull that card and we'll talk about it here. It
is the Shawn Salisbury Show on a Tuesday Sports Talk
