Reaching this very intense part of the year with football season in full swing now, baseball season slowly concluding, and basketball season on the horizon, there was a lot of hype surrounding the city of Houston rolling into the 2025-26 season. Looking back on each league's legal tampering period during the offseason and free agency, wasting no time on contract signings and extensions, Houston appeared to have a very promising future across all 3 leagues in the years to come. However, taking a drastic turn recently as the Astros' playoff hopes slowly slip, the Texans' 0-3 start, and Shams Charania breaking the news that Rockets' Guard Fred VanVleet endured a torn ACL yesterday and may miss the season's entirety, things do not look as promising as they once did for Houston. Regressing a bit, Dan, Chris, & Ari share how they feel about Houston's current teams and their current positions, and which of the 3 could turn their season around before it becomes too late.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
You know, Gordy, that's what we'll start the conversation. I

(00:02):
mean Ken's point right there about the rookie contract, because
that's when you can do fun things, is when you
have a rookie quarterback that's not being paid a ton
of money and it doesn't gobble up your salary cap.
So is it fair to say that last year? I mean,
you tried it by going out and getting Steffan Diggs.
Your offensive line sucked and he got hurt, so that

(00:22):
didn't really work. So then you tried again this year.
Rete you go out and get a couple of receivers
in the draft class, and you're trying to be able
to build up this offense, and you make some moves
in the offseason in terms of trying to build up
this offensive line, and it's still a mess. Like is
this something we're going to look back at once you
do have to extend CJ as Man. They really miss
their opportunity to go after this thing, I think so.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
I mean the one everybody always goes to is the Seahawks.
With one Russell Wilson was on his rookie deal and
the legion of boom, they were able to go spend
a bunch of money and surround him by a bunch
of talent and make runs at Super Bowls and all that.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
But I don't know. I think it's a combination everything.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Offensive line still sucks, You've downgraded at pass catching weapons basically.
I mean, granted, you need the two Iowa State dudes
to come along and hopefully they mature into something. But yeah,
I mean, I still go back to the Stefan Diggs deal,
like when you acquired him awesome, and then you rework
his deal to make it a one year deal. Okay,

(01:23):
you get a first round pick for that, Like, I
still go back to that as Like, I don't know
what they were doing there. Again, must have been a
discussion with his agent and agreement all he wants to
hit the market again, Okay, whatever, But I would have
liked to have kept him another year because outside of
Eco Collins, there's nobody else in this receiving corps I trust.
On top of I think CJ's recrossed a little bit.

(01:45):
I know everybody the hot topic last year was, Oh no,
it was the offensive line. I wasn't CJ. I wanted
to TEJ CJ looks like an average ass dude.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
Out there.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
And again, if it's part to the offensive line to blame,
it's part the wide receiver coach to blame, it's part
the old seed to blame. It was blame to go
all around. But yes, you are going to look back
on this and go, we wasted some great years of
what could have been with a great quarterback.

Speaker 4 (02:07):
I mean, you had a guy who looked like a
world beater as a rookie, and so it made perfect
sense to get him more weapons the first year, and
then it didn't work and the result. And I think
Tank Dell getting hurt is a bigger part in this
than anyone else realizes for many reasons. One, he stretches
the field, he can play slot, he does all these
different things, and him and CJ are best friends. Do

(02:29):
not discount the power of friendship, all right. I think
the vibes have been a little bit off with him
being out. I don't think it helped the Christian Kirk
missed the first couple of weeks and it didn't feel
like he was all that involved, because I do think
Christian Kirk can be a useful player for CJ to
have a check down, to have a guy when the
Nico throw is an open but beyond that tank is out.

(02:51):
Who do you have. Xavier Hutchinson was a six round pick.
If you're relying on him, that's a problem. Jayden Higgins
is clearly not ready enough to get all these targets.

Speaker 5 (03:00):
Maybe by the end of the year.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
Almost treating him like Reed Shepherd at this point where
this guy is not really getting the snaps and by
the end of the year, hopefully he turns into something.
But there's a lot of guys around the league in
the past few years, especially at wide receiver, that are
second round picks, the third round picks, who are immediately ready, Yes,
Lad McCaughey last year, immediately ready. A lot of guys
like that that are ready to go right away. Why

(03:24):
is he not necessarily getting if he's that good, If
you are the first second round pick to ever get
a fully guaranteed contract, design a play for him, specifically
for him, why is that money?

Speaker 2 (03:33):
But I've seen some people saying, you know, oh, instead
of getting those two receivers, they should have spent on
offensive linemen. Okay, I mean then you have some So
if the offensive line is a little bit better, then
you have crappier pass catchers.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
I mean, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
I don't know, like how how you disperse what what's
going on here?

Speaker 3 (03:49):
I just know this.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Nick Cassario got all the praise from the draft from
two years ago and getting CG.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
Stroud, getting Will Anderson Jr. They hit hit, hit, hit hit.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Sometimes you miss as well, and I think he has
very much missed on retooling this offensive line.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
Oh, we did the exercise hearing a break of ari
going back and looking at the draft classes, and it's
either guys that are out of the league or guys
that are on their way out.

Speaker 5 (04:15):
Of the league.

Speaker 1 (04:16):
I mean, Kenyon Green is the one that people pointed
the most big but Blake Fisher last year. If this
guy's not breaking the starting five or at least the
rotation right now, what does that tell you what you
think about him?

Speaker 3 (04:26):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Because that, I mean, you know, it's the second round
pick on that guy. Second round pick on a tackle
by your two should be starting for you just most situations.

Speaker 5 (04:34):
Should be a useful player. So yeah, let's do this.

Speaker 4 (04:36):
So twenty twenty one, no, no offensive linemen drafted. Twenty
twenty two, they trade up for Kenyon Green. Kenyan Green
was so bad that you traded him away and he
is basically bouncing around the practice squad for the Eagles.
We know about Kenyon Green. He's a top fifteen pick too, right, yep,
fifteenth overall pick. He was terrible sixth round and I'm
not going to give a whole lot of credit or
you know, discount is a sixth round pick. Whatever he gets,

(04:58):
whatever you get. Austin Deculus is playing a little bit
for another team. Second round, Yeah, Lshuka, Okay, twenty twenty
three Juice Scruggs, second round pick, back end of the
second round.

Speaker 5 (05:08):
But second round pick not a good player.

Speaker 4 (05:10):
Okay, you have twenty twenty four second round pick Blake
Fisher back into the second round. Still a second round pick,
was a healthy scratch this week because he's not good
enough to be on the roster. And then in the
seventh round you draft la Darius Henderson, who I heard
way too much about training camp. Yeah, why are we
talking about a seventh round pick? Guard who cares? You
shouldn't know that guy's name. And then this year URSII

(05:33):
who obviously it's only been three games, but he had
a rough one this past week.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
Poor guy.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
I saw the video of him yesterday, like I'll go
to play better. I'm like, dude, it's not on you. Yeah,
do not take the play for this.

Speaker 4 (05:44):
You get a little bit of runaway I you relax.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
He was wearing roller skates against Josh heinz Allen. But
I mean Josh heinz Allen and fairness, lot of people.

Speaker 5 (05:53):
But I mean, but that's their point though.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
I mean, like you're counting on a guy that was
a high second round pick to like, say, your offensive
line brother, you are setting yourself up for failure if
that's really going to be what you're hinging your hopes
of that group of five on.

Speaker 4 (06:08):
And you're putting him at left tackle right away because
you have no one else. How you have Nick Asterio,
who has gotten all this praise, and he is as
bad at drafting offensive lineman and evaluating offensive lineman as
Bill Belichick was at wide receivers. Remember when he drafted
that guy from Marshall whose name I don't remember because
he's so bad I don't remember his name, Probably a

(06:29):
good point. And then the other wide receivers who did nothing,
Nikhil Harry, who did nothing.

Speaker 5 (06:35):
This is this is that level. We're at the level
of Nick as stereo looking at.

Speaker 4 (06:39):
The hog Mally's and just like having the confusion question
marks from metal year solid above his head.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
Whoever wins the Joe Moore Award this year, if somebody
out of that offensive line is in the draft, draft.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Them, you know, get a big go, give me a
big Michigan old lineman.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Give me somebody like that.

Speaker 4 (06:56):
Wait for Kirk Farens to retire potentially this year for Iowa,
and you bring him in as a consultant because that
guy knows how to look at offensive linemen.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
Here's hoping, I guess Sean Sharania reporting that the Rocket's
going to be without point guard Fred van Vliet torn
acl off season workouts. So we'll start it there and
wrap it up with some astros here kick that around yet, like,
is there is there a player out there that can
be traded for? So we did do that exercise earlier
where they do have the.

Speaker 5 (07:23):
Disability exception.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
And a half million dollars all right, So they've got
that there are some players that are out there. But
I mean, I've got to believe next week when we're
over there, Gordy for media Day, it's going to be
a lot of reed. Shepherd and a lot of Aaron
Holliday talk, and.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
Aaron Holliday's played well for them, but in his role,
you know what I mean is that as that guy
off the bedch that can.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
Give you a little bit of a spills and the
spots start here and there. Because Fred's been out with
or whatever. I just don't I mean, and again, I
don't know if Reed's ready yet.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
Still, he's still developing kind of towards it back in
the last season, kind of came on a little bit.
But I think he's better served as that wing guy
that can he can he can distribute a little bit,
he can defend, but it's really his I think his
calling card in the NBA is going to be that
knockdown three point shooter.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
And that's the thing is I mean, I was talking
about with Ari a little bit earlier. I mean, you know,
you hear about him with distribution and those things, But
I mean, that is what you want in this offense.
I think absolutely would want. I think that probably you
do see Holiday out of the gate, but and then
I think probably when you get to mid to late January,
that's when you start to see more minutes for Reid.
I don't think you entrust a deep run to a

(08:32):
second year point guard who barely played last year until
the end of the year, and you don't entrust a
deep run to Aaron Holliday, Like we were talking about this.
When you get in the playoffs, it's Aaron Holliday chasing
around Steph.

Speaker 4 (08:43):
Curry for thirty six minutes. It's Aaron Holliday chasing around
Shake Gill, just Alexander Luka, Doncicch. You don't want that
they got to get someone. I'm not necessarily sure that
the solution, and it could be the solution could be
read Shepherd all year, knowing that your team is good
enough that if he doesn't play well in November and
decen in January and you just kind of let him
build up and go along, that you're gonna win enough

(09:04):
games for it to not matter and you can still
get the three or the four or whatever seed because
you have Kevin Durant and Alprin Shangoon and Jabari Smith
and Territory Eason and a man and like.

Speaker 5 (09:15):
You have this depth.

Speaker 4 (09:16):
They build up all this depth to withstand the twenty
games that you're gonna need to sit. Kevin Durant roughly
just to keep his bones from akin be nice. And
you have guys like Tarry Easton who's had kind of
the lingering leg thing going on for the past couple
of years, different stuff that if he's not playing, you
can weather that because you have four other guys that

(09:36):
play a similar role.

Speaker 5 (09:37):
Point Guard is the one.

Speaker 4 (09:39):
Position where they don't necessarily have that depth that they
do everywhere else.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
Well, let me throw out some names with some guys
who are available. You guys, do these are free agents?
Tell me if you think this would be viable. First one,
Gary Payton Jr. Yeah, former Rockets draft pick. I don't
know if I didn't trust him to be your starter.

Speaker 5 (09:56):
I mean that's depth purpose is only. But yeah, sure.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
How about Russell Westbrook? See I run it back baby.
See we talked about that a little bit. I think
would kill him. Uh, this one now here, this is
you have to start this one out. Hear me out.
Ben Simmons. No, that's a good fisherman. Does he care
about basketball anymore?

Speaker 1 (10:19):
So?

Speaker 3 (10:19):
If he did that, I'd love to see Benson.

Speaker 1 (10:22):
I'm building a bowling team or am I building a
team that can actually win?

Speaker 3 (10:26):
Yeah? I mean he can't shoot, but he can move
the ball around.

Speaker 5 (10:29):
What I just said about the bowling team more what
I just said.

Speaker 3 (10:33):
No more nonshooters.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
The other one's Corey Joseph, Patty Mills campaign.

Speaker 3 (10:38):
Those are kind of all some free agent point guards
to campaign.

Speaker 4 (10:41):
Yes, Patty Mills is thirty seven, Corey Joseph is thirty
four years old. The only other guys you look at
the list, like Alec Burks is thirty four. I think
the Knicks just signed Malcolm Brogden. Malcolm Brogden would have
made sense. He's a guy that's got a previous relationship
with imy Udoka. But it's hard to rely on these
young point guards because you look at some of the
top point guards around the NBA and outside of the

(11:02):
guys like Luca who a generational prospect type of guy,
look at Jalen Brunson. How long did it take for
Jalen Brunson to develop into a this is a playoff
killer type guy? Tyrese Haliburton last year, he's been in
the league a while, how long did it take for him?
How long did it take for shake Gil Just Alexander
to develop into the MVP. It's almost like offensive linemen
and tight ends, you're just not going to get that

(11:24):
impact you're one in year two unless it's a special,
special guy.

Speaker 3 (11:28):
And I'm not sure.

Speaker 5 (11:29):
Reed Shephard is in that class of player.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
Well, I mean he's gonna be asked to do a
lot more than he was last year. I don't think
there's any doubt about it.

Speaker 3 (11:36):
That agree.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
You don't want Aman Thompson to be her starting point guard, right,
He's better served as that to the defender and all that.

Speaker 1 (11:45):
And then even when he plays small, he can be
the three. Yeah, all all of those things. Let's get
into little bit of astros because I heard you and
Matt and Ross talking about this a little bit yesterday
of you just can't trust fromber So tonight, Christian Hobbyer,
he pitches, well, you do get into the postseason, does
he vault in as being a number.

Speaker 5 (12:02):
Two for you?

Speaker 1 (12:03):
And here's another scenario I want you to think about.
You're gonna probably more than likely, have to pitch Hunter
Brown twice this week. If that happens, goodbye Game one.
You can't have him thrown then.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
So Hunter is slated to go Wednesday, so you I
don't think I would have him go Sunday.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
But again if if playoffs are on the line.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
I mean, yeah, if I've got to win to get in,
you damn right, Yeah, for sure, that's tough.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
I just think of a scenario, ad and let's just
play it out. Let's say they get to the wall
card round, they're on the road in Seattle or Yankee
Stadium orhoever they are. I think Hunter Brown game one,
if you can get if you can get him the ball,
you cannot have to pitch him Sunday. I think he
goes Tuesday in game one. If you win that game,

(12:50):
then I'm okay, given Fromber the ball in game two.
But if you lose game one, I can't give Fromber
in a season on the line game, Yeah.

Speaker 1 (13:03):
Aj blue ball a bullpen game, I mean a blue ball,
that would be a look.

Speaker 4 (13:07):
I think Javier needs to be your number two in
that sense. But you're right that if you win, you
now have like, all right, let's see a promber good
from er bad.

Speaker 3 (13:15):
Maybe maybe you see great Fromber that night, you know.

Speaker 1 (13:18):
Yeah, But that's just the thing though, how long we've
been waiting that for the last two and a half months.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
Well, basically anybody not named the Colorado Rockies.

Speaker 1 (13:27):
He has sucked against the last eight weeks, and you're
not Rockies in the postseason unfortunately.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
You know, look, Jason Alexander had a rough inning the
other night, but I also have to take a step
back and go, that's a dangerous Seattle lineup that is
clicking on all cylinders right now. And his previous four
or five starts Alexander was awesome. So let's not just
kick him to the curb because of the one bad outing. Now,
here's the problem. If you're will carve around in Seattle. Yeah,
I don't know if I'm handing him the ball, but.

Speaker 1 (13:57):
You almost he almost wondered if you know, he he
didn't make the stopped that he needed in order to
try to win the race, and it's kind of starting
to run out of gas a little bit. That's just
a concern real quick here. College football. How about what
Weeks going after Kiffin's daughter.

Speaker 2 (14:11):
Yeah, that that was the thing that came out a
couple of weeks ago that Lane Kiffen's daughter was dating
Wit Weeks, the linebacker from LSU. They just made it
public this week because it's LSU all this week, so
you know, it's it's something fun to kick around whatever
but you know, they like each other and whatever. She's
gonna root for him to have a good game. But

(14:31):
I think she's gonna root for her dad to win
the football game because that's who's buying.

Speaker 5 (14:36):
All her stuff.

Speaker 1 (14:36):
So is she gonna go Brady Quinn's sister Jersey like
half a four or as zero in the other half
the powder blue?

Speaker 3 (14:44):
Probably? By the way, shout out to u of H.

Speaker 2 (14:47):
Just I saw a national story on them today about
Willie Fritz and the great job he's doing recruiting and
all the attention they're getting. And look, Oregon State Corvallis
is normally a tough place to play.

Speaker 3 (14:57):
That team sucks this year. It's a late game.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
Friday is Friday night, nine thirty, so you're probably talking
more like a nine to forty kick. That game is
gonna end after midnight here Central time. But if they
can win that one, they come back home four and
oh for Texas Tech next week. That place is going
to be popping. People wondering if game day is gonna
be there for that one. I mean, if it's four
and oh and four and oh, yeah, it's it's just tough,

(15:22):
you know, because the last time they came was SMU. Yeah,
but what was you of a say? They were like
nine to oh or so. You know, so it's like
you almost have to get to that to get the national.

Speaker 1 (15:33):
Chance to make it into the BCS. And your head
coach went ahead and started meeting with Texas A and
M and then they're like no, no, no, that's not
the case. And then you were woefully unprepared for Southern
miss I remember that day.

Speaker 5 (15:45):
Yeah, it was a good day. Well, unfortunately Gordon.

Speaker 3 (15:48):
Case Keenum was good at football.

Speaker 1 (15:50):
We've had a lot of those days. We've had need
to drown sorrows because you had the Astros this weekend,
the Texans, and then you had the Fred van Vliet
News yesterday. I'm usually saying drink Carbock Crawford back whenever
you're in a good mood, but i mean, can it
serve that purpose too
