Speaker 1 (00:00):
But now we're talking baseball, and let's head on out
to the hotline. Let's bring in our good buddy from
an MLB network. You can see him every weekday morning,
nine am Central, MLB Central there on MLB Network. He
is Robert Flores and he joins us here on the
show Real Flow. Appreciate it, Hey, good buddy, appreciate the time.
(00:22):
Always always Robert, we appreciate having you. And uh it's
I know how much you love your astros. Let me
go back five weeks before spring training started, six weeks ago, Yes,
what was your feeling about them then?
Speaker 2 (00:37):
That there was more uncertainty going into a season than
maybe in a decade, that they have less room for error,
and the margin for error had shrunk, and their stranglehold
on the American League West may no longer be the case.
(00:58):
That was my Those were my thoughts going in and
I still have some of those same questions.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
All right now? Which one cuts you deep?
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Now?
Speaker 4 (01:08):
Not not not today, but then when it happened Kyle
Tucker to the Cubs, Alex Regman of the Red Sox,
which one hurt worse? And which one do you think
hurts this team worse? That's a great question. That's a
really good question. I think the Bregman one as a as.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
A as an Astro fan, probably cut the deepest because
he was he came in basically on the ground floor,
you know, on this this run of dominance Kyle Tucker.
No doubt we'll still go down as one of the
greatest Astros of of all time. But with the with
(01:46):
the Tucker situation, I thought I could see that coming
because of the economics of it. Once Juan Soto signed
for seven hundred and sixty five million dollars, I was thinking, well,
Kyle Tucker's maybe not the complete hitter that Soto is,
but he's a better outfielder and steal bases and could
do more. So the Astros aren't going to get close
to the neighborhood that Tucker's going to be living in.
(02:07):
But with Bregman, you thought that there could be a chance.
But obviously ultimately it didn't end up that way.
Speaker 4 (02:14):
Robert Flora's MLB Network MMB Central nine to eleventh Central
every day, longtime friend of mine from our days in Bristol,
and he's still killing it. Great to have him on
here on Sports Talk seven ninety previewing this Major League season.
All right, now fast forward, Gregman's gone, Tucker's gone. Spring
training is over. Now you're feeling on the Astros and
we're going to get to the elephant in the room
(02:35):
here in just a second. So you're feeling on the
Astros now post spring training.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
I think that they can. They're in the mix for
a postseason birth.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
No doubt.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
My pick to win that division is the Texas Rangers,
just because I think that they're a deeper team. I
think their lineup's a different team. But would it shock
me if the Astros won the division again? No, there's
still some areas of concern. The Luis Garcia news is
definitely ominous. I don't like that the bullpen, with the
(03:08):
injuries to Whitley and ort to begin the season, I
think they're a little light in the bullpen to begin things.
And look the move that jose L Tuve is going
to make in left field, I am real fascinated to
see how that works. But I think it also at
the same time, it speaks to jose L Tuva as
the player and maybe even as a man that he's
(03:31):
willing to even embark on this new venture.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Are you concerned about it?
Speaker 4 (03:35):
Robert, I mean, is it too experimental for you or
is it Jose, Jose, he'll manage. Is it a deal
Is it a deal breaker for the astro season?
Speaker 5 (03:43):
Defensively, I don't think so, because especially when you consider
where he's going to be playing half of his games
right this season, and that's you know, it's not minute,
it's not the juice box anymore.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
It's it's the ice box. Shout out to Omar. Yeah,
so I think you know, that's obviously a short left
field and look anything over his head, it's it's either
going in the Crawford boxes or clanging off the uh
off the fence out there. I think the thing that
he's going to and I talked with one of the
the astro coaches and the thing that he's gonna have
to get used to. And when he when he mentioned it,
(04:20):
I was like, Wow, I didn't think of it. Running
in from left field, running all that way into the
dugout and then leading off to hit to begin an inning.
That's something he hasn't done. Yeah, you would. It is
underrated and we certainly if we haven't played the game
like a lot of us haven't, uh at this level. Uh,
(04:42):
then it's not something that that jumps to mind. So
there's gonna be an adjustment period, no doubt. But I'm
confident that I'll to evate the baseball player. I'll to
evate the athlete can can make it work.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
Cam Smith, m are you a oh? Let him take
bats in the minor leagues. I've been for the last
two and a half weeks after watching you don't want
to go see out is all the hype that goes
with it.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
He's earned the job.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
I mean, if he needs to go down, fine, But
right now I think the glasses half full. I don't
even think about that stuff. I think, what if the
guy's a star, the infused energy Robert, what he's done
here and somebody left their glove out in the mound,
like I say here, and he went out and picked
it up. Your initial thoughts on the fact that he
is going to be starting in right field more than
likely and hits somewhere at six or seven upgrade to
(05:30):
the team.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
I think potentially it has a massive upside. No doubt.
There is Look, there is the the areas of trepidation.
He's he's playing a position that, like Alsuve, not familiar with,
not all that familiar with he came up as a
third baseman. But when you look at what the out
at the Astros needs and the outfield when spring training began,
(05:58):
Jake Myers, Chas McCormick, wonderful players tremendous defensively, haven't given
the Astros consistent offensive production. You lose an aircraft carrier
like Kyle Tucker. You need someone like the potential that
Cam Smith has to give you that offensive boost out there.
I just hope that he gets off to a really
(06:19):
good start.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
Jan Robert. It can affect veterans in a good way too.
Speaker 4 (06:23):
Sometimes a young guy coming in it's in is you
know that has played what thirty two minor league games.
It can raise their game too because they say, damn,
I got an elevator, I'm not going to see the field.
I mean, the affects, no question, no doubt.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
It definitely has the potential to trickle down in areas
throughout the clubhouse. You talked about his energy and not
to mention the talent, so there is tremendous upside there.
I hope he gets off to a really good start
because if he's able to provide some pop in the lineup,
which potentially, and it looks like in the spring he has,
(07:00):
then that's a huge boost for this lineup, no doubt.
Speaker 4 (07:03):
Okay, we mentioned pitching and depth and the injuries in
the bullpen. If I if you somebody came to you
and and you're you're you're managing the team, and they said,
be honest, what's the biggest weakness or your biggest concern
outside of injuries?
Speaker 3 (07:17):
What is it? Uh?
Speaker 2 (07:20):
I I think it's you know, what are they going
to look like? It's two for me? What are they
going to look like defensively in that outfield with with
two inexperienced corner outfielders to start and then the bridge
to a bray you and hater, what does that look like?
Now you can look at the Astros track record and say, hey,
(07:44):
they find a way to figure it out, right, And uh,
that has been the the the mo of this, of
this franchise and and of this coaching staff and of
this team here in the last several years, that hey,
they'll they'll figure it out. I hope that offensively, that
the lineup is deep. I want Parades to get off
(08:04):
to a quick start, and I hope Christian Walker's healthy.
If so, It's like I said at the beginning, it's
just that there's less room for error than ever before
in the past, in the past ten years or so.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
Okay, somebody gives me a million dollars and you're my
one phone call on the game show, and I gotta
I gotta pick the American League champion. Yeah, today, who
is Huh? Who's the best team in the American League.
I picked the Boston Red Sox. We're doing a segment
where we have to make predictions.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
Now, let me just preface this by saying I did
this last year, and I was half right with my pick,
So take it with a grain of salt, right, and
then the.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Way we are on the wall, we got right. I'm
with exactly.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
So look, I love what the Red Sox did, you know,
obviously getting Alex Brigman, Uh, he's gonna be playing third
Rafie Devilish is now the dectnated hitter. But I also
like their pitching staff. I mean, I picked Garrett Crochet
to win the saw Young in the American League. So
and you look at what the Yankees and what they lost.
They lose Garrett Cole, So I think this is a
year where Alex core finds a way to get to
(09:07):
the World Series. I had them losing to the Philadelphia Phillies,
all right, if this.
Speaker 4 (09:10):
Is and so if you got the Phillies obviously in
the World Series, so get to the Dodgers and just
cover them. In baseball, is it? You know, it's harsh
to say it's a failure. You know, we'll say that
about teams that they don't make the playoffs, right or
if they do, or a team that you know wasn't
a playoff team the year before and they got to
the playoffs, but din win, that's a win for them.
And normally when you get to the playoffs, you feel
(09:32):
like there's good stuff to gather. But in the Dodgers case,
well like nine deep pitching staff, we know that we
know all the stuff that goes up. The ninth guy
can win the cy Young, right, so, and four dudes
can win the MVP. If they don't win the World Series,
is their season of failure overall?
Speaker 3 (09:48):
Not individually, but overall.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
That's a tough one. I mean, it's look, if they
don't make the postseason, that's a failure. That's the failure.
I just think that in baseball, in the new format,
with the extra wild card teams three game series. If
you're in the wild card then it's a five game
and then you get to the sevens. Once you get
(10:12):
to the LCS and the World Series. Baseball is weird, man,
you know this, So I look just look at just
get in. That's what these teams are thinking right right now,
especially in the National League West. If you have the
Diamondbacks or the Giants, they probably know they're not winning
the division, but you know what, Hey, let's just get
in and then we'll take our chances in a five
(10:33):
game series against whomever it is.
Speaker 3 (10:35):
I'll let you go with this. The sneaky team.
Speaker 4 (10:38):
I don't know if they're sneaky anymore because of a
couple of years ago, but I still think Arizona and
Adam Corbyn Burns, their pitching staff gaves them a chance
and to play, you know, and in short series or
what have you. I like them. But do you have
a team that you say we're not talking enough about them?
Speaker 3 (10:51):
Who is it?
Speaker 2 (10:53):
I'll give you two. One the the Milwaukee Brewers. They
won the National League Central by ten games. In fact,
I'm at Yankee Stadium right now and they're opening up
the season. This afternoon against the Yankees. No one's talking
about the Milwaukee Brewers. That's kind of the the usual
in the norm when it comes to the Brewers. And
then also the Kansas City Royals, and I'll give you
(11:16):
a third, the Cincinnati Ritz. I had the Royals winning
the ALE Central. I had the Cincinnati Ritz winning the
National League Central with the with the new manager Terry
Francona and Elie de la Cruz maybe making an MVP run.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
Yeah, when you got Elie dela Cruz on one and
then Bobby Witt junior you're talking about, and those teams
you name have explosive talent that can win the whole
thing with his I mean, MVP is what I'm talking about.
It's going to be fun to watch, like a Cincinnati,
Kansas City. So Detroit, where do they finish? I know
people want to hear about the aj Hinch stuff here.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
Where are they in there? Yeah, I've got Detroit in
the postseason. I don't I think they I don't remember
what my bracket had. I might have had them as
a as a five or six seed, not winning the division,
but getting one of those wildcard spots. So I think
the American League is wide open, you know, and certainly
the Astros are in that mix. And it's like like
(12:04):
I said a few seconds ago, it's just get in
and then once you're in the postseason, you're you're you're
in the dance and you'll you'll take your chances. So
I'm hoping for I would love to see this this
Astros team make a run similar to what they have
done in the years passes, especially with all the new
faces that are that are now on board.
Speaker 4 (12:24):
And maybe a little less expectation allows them to breathe
a little single. But sure they put pressure on themselves,
but you know what, the the expectations of lowered, but
maybe not in the clubhouse, which will be a good thing.
Robert forlor Is MLB Network, MLB Central, nine to eleven
Central time. It's a great show at Yankee Stadium. There's
nothing better than opening day in any sport.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
Brother, and you both know this, and you keep killing it.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
Have a blast today and this is the beginning of
a great fun season. And we'll have you on plenty
if if, if you'll have us to it.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
Yeah, you call me anytime and you and and one
last thing, go Cougar's Bet.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
There you know I should have got to that.
Speaker 4 (12:57):
Did you pick them in your bracket to win the
whole thing I did with my Colvin Sampson.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
I don't do brackets because they just annoy the hell
out of me and I'm awful at it. But I
just love Kelvin's team. They've got a lot of weapons
and they can come at you in a variety of ways.
It's not just one guy. You love the culture, you
love the defense, and hopefully they can see it through
this weekend and get to San Antonio.
Speaker 4 (13:19):
I'm so glad you brought that up because I'm saying
you're getting so caught up in Opening Day baseball. I'm thinking, damn,
let's stut bury that lead in this room. Either as
we got the damn we got the coogs going, and
Kelvin Samson's team will be relentless and you'll know you
were in a fistfight. I'll guarant ask to give me,
give me the cougars all the way to San Antonio.
My man appreciate you, and we'll always be watching you.
Keep killing it and have a great Opening Day, all right,
Thanks Sean, have a great weekend.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
YouTube, brother, Thank you. That's great. Robert flores.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
He loves his coogs, my man loves his cougs, loves
his astros.
