Speaker 1 (00:02):
Salsbury Old, Okay, let's do this.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Shawn Salisburysbury to usc Troup.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
Longtime friend, Shawn Salisbury.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Dan matthewscu. This is the Sean Salisbury show.
Speaker 4 (00:23):
Here's the one and that shot the other way, and
that's through. That's a base it. They're gonna send the runner,
Cam Smith with a one hot throw in and he
is saved Josh Lo just ahead of the tag. This
one's pulled and through the right side of the infield
and into the right field corner. One run will score
the hole the trail runner at third base and it's
(00:45):
a double for a Ronda Sea knocks in his thirty
first run of the season, and it's five to three Rays.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Here's the pitch.
Speaker 5 (00:54):
Shoots it the other way very well.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
Cam Smith racing still going back and it's gone right
center field, just to the side of the Astros bullpen.
It's a three run homer for Caminero and it's a
five spot for the Rays.
Speaker 6 (01:09):
Here in the seventh inning, one two, swinging a mess,
the Sinzo strikes out on a fastball and that is
the ballgame. Tampa Bay Rays poured on late defeat the
Houston Astros thirteen to three to take the first game
of this four game set, just the second loss for
the Astros in their last seven games.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
There you go.
Speaker 5 (01:28):
The story has been told.
Speaker 7 (01:29):
The Astros a rough one last night there at dyke
In Park, and with that we say away we go
in good morning here on the Sean Salisbury Show. As Sean,
I mean, it was a game that started off rocky
for the Stros and then they're able to tie it
up and you're thinking to yourself, the way they've played
late in ballgames this year, Okay, hey, you got them
(01:51):
right where you won them, this is gonna work out
just great. You set up your bullpen to go king
maybe a bray you and hater there in the seventh, eighth,
and ninth, and with the seventh inning it did not
go that way.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
Well, Dan, good morning. And it's one of those times
when you have them during the year. It's just it
wasn't pretty and the bullpen wasn't at their best, and
Campa put it on them. They jumped on them. It
was not it felt You're right, They're like, well, here
we go this this is this is their time, but
sometimes it's not your time. It was ugly and they
(02:25):
got to the bullpen yesterday. It doesn't happen very often,
but it was not a uh it was not a
pretty watch, and they had to get right back at it.
And obviously over the weekend with the next three days,
it'll be important to get that back because well, Tampa
scenes to play pretty well against them, and especially this year,
so they're gonna have to They're going to have to
(02:46):
not only hit better early, but also pitch better late,
which does is not a weakness of theirs. Yesterday it
looked like and you know, if King had his struggles
and it was just it was one of those days, Dan,
you'll have We've seeing the Astros give it to others.
There'll be a handful of those during the year. One
where it's like it's it's it's a no brainer and
then no doubter, and uh, Tampa put that on them yesterday.
(03:09):
It was not a fun watch. No, it was not.
Speaker 7 (03:12):
I mean for about the final hour and a half
of that game, it was one that at the end
of it you were kind of like, hmm, yeah, not fun,
Like what did I just see?
Speaker 1 (03:21):
You were interne out of it at the end. Yeah,
we got some of you why I was in and
out of it to the point of, okay, you know what,
I it's okay. I don't think I'm going to miss anything.
That's that's that's good. It's gonna happen. So but you know,
like I said, it's one of those where you look
at your buddy when you're sitting there and you say, well, okay,
it may this, this may not be ours, and you
(03:41):
move on to today and you try to, you know,
spit that one out and flesh it out as quickly
as possible. But you know they can still go and
do their thing and win the series. But you're gonna
you're gonna run into those and they obviously did. You
just don't want them to in a row. So there
you go. That's the hope.
Speaker 7 (03:56):
I mean, the Astros have won now four of their
last five games, so it's still a strong homestand to
this point where you've gone five and two right now,
so you'd like to be able to at least get
a couple of more if you get a split in
this series. Sean a seven and three home stand. I
know that we're putting the cart way ahead of the horse,
but I mean it's a tough one and in a
(04:17):
weird way, too. I mean, I don't know about you,
but it almost kind of feels like in baseball. Once
that happens, you're able to mentally check out of it
a little bit, where it's just like, Okay, it's it's gone,
it's done.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
Put it behind us.
Speaker 7 (04:30):
And you know, football sometimes you get another week, and
baseball you usually get another day to be able to
come out there and make up for it.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Yeah, Dan, that's a good point. I think that you know,
when you're in high leverage games on a regular you
know that are back kind of close all the time,
which is normally baseball, right. I mean, I don't know
what the run differential is, you know, I'm sure we
can find it with a click of a button, but
what the run differential is in most games during the season,
or you know, if you take every team one hundred
(04:59):
and sixty two games and say, I mean, we can
look at the run differential for each person, but I'm
in a game, I would say most games. That's why
when you look at a betting site, damn baseball run
and a half run and a half you know what
I'm saying, the site it's like, oh, they're they're favored
by a running a half run and a half, one
and a half, one and a half. I would think
(05:20):
that most games, I may be way off. It feels
like most games are you got to you're you're at
least competitive with a chance to win. Does that make
sense for games? Yeah, and and what you know, we
look at run differential for individual teams. I'm talking about
the overall in the majority of the games in a season,
(05:41):
most people aren't checked out in the third inning because
the game's over the fourth inning. You know what I'm saying.
Where it's a blowout right where it's like a nineteen
to three game, it's just one of those, and we
see them, and or a game when you just get
your ass handed to you. Most of them are competitive
where you're you you mentioned it were that stress or
that you know you're you're heavy into it, whether you're
(06:01):
a fan or a player. But there are those games,
and we've seen them in football, and we see them
and you know, there's not many double digit spreads in
the NFL, usually within touchdown. They just are and it's
it's baseball for the most part. But I know this
is going to sound odd, and you're never quit playing
or competing in a game. But you do go through
the at the end of one hundred and sixty two games,
(06:22):
look and say, okay, it was the worst seven eight
games of the year for the for the Astros, or
for the Red Sox, or for the you know, Pirates.
You know, some teams worse than others because they're just awful,
but of good teams and the Pirates shouldn't be in there.
Red Sox, Yankees and Astros and Dodgers. I'll bet you
that the majority of the games past sixth inning and beyond,
(06:45):
they were at least in it with a chance to
win a couple run different whether that where you're as
a player, you're dialed and said, one swing of the bat,
we're right back in it. I would say the majority
of those. But I also know that there's those games
that you know, you'll look at eight or ten of
them where they got beat thirteen to five, four, you know,
ten to two. There'll be a handful of those against
(07:05):
when you beat good teams, meanion teams like the Astros
that you don't check out Dan And when I say
it's like, well, you got to compete all the time.
It's impossible to stay focused and play that duress, under duress,
and play the old leverage baseball one hundred and sixty
two of them. It's nobody does it and nobody. There's
(07:27):
nobody within that reach of each other where it's like
within two runs in the seventh inning and beyond every
game that just doesn't happen, and you hit it in
the same way I'm saying it. You said it's simpler,
but that there are those games where like, okay, we'll
just keep playing and hopefully get into it. But it's
not the mental grind that beats you down. You know
what I'm saying. Two to one, three to two, four
(07:48):
to two, the base is packed in the eighth inning
and you got to get them out with the relief pitcher,
where every single inning is a grind. Now you want
to relax and play relax, but I'm talking about where
you know, every get bat in games like last night
or games that are at times one sided, it can
give you a mental break. You're still competing and maybe
(08:11):
some teams you know, hey, it's and you'll see times
how many times you've seen. Also, it happens in the NBA. Hell,
it happened in Game five with the thunder and Minnesota
where you're starting the middle the third quarter, it's like
we're up NBA, probably a little less because we see
too many, you know, twenty point comebacks because guys quit
playing defense. But where it's like, okay, the manager in
(08:32):
baseball's decided, you know what this is. Even though it's
not a day off, it's a fifth thing. It's a
day where I can get my guy, pull him out
for a pinch hit or in the fits that makes
sense where the game is so blown out, guy's been laboring, tired, Okay,
let's rest him. You can give it, so you give
your mind a mental break. You need him, you just do.
And I'm not saying you don't compete on all of
(08:52):
them and say, well, we can come back from eight
runs down. Of course you can. But there's this psychological
thing for a player. I've been in games like it
where you're getting and not a lot of them were
you're getting beat up, and it's like, what the hell
I mean? Now you keep pressing. What you're thinking in
your mind is okay, I got it. Next week? Is
a football player in baseball? All right? This didn't happen
(09:13):
in two days in a row or two games in
a row or two weeks in a row. You keep competing,
but it's like some days it's just those other guys
that are getting paid are just beating you down, and
so you've got to give your mind a break, say okay,
I'm gonna keep competing, but there's not that stress level.
My hit means the world where in a two to
one game in the night to strike out looking at
pitches that you can carry that with you. Sometimes the
(09:36):
blowouts or when you get beat up a little bit
are a little easier to come back from the next
day because you've mentally got you It's like when you're sick, Dan,
if you've played sportsmen you go with your buddy go
play golf, or I've played in games and that wasn't
feeling well at all. There's this built in relaxation and
that you don't expect anything from yourself. So what happens
(09:56):
Michael Jordan one hundred and three degree temperature, whatever it was,
You go score forty and it's just because your mind
is like giving your body. It's like, man, I don't
know if I can get through this, and you find
your way through it, but you're so relaxed that hell,
you went four for four, and that happens in blowouts
two where it's like, okay, give me a mind break,
then you come back next. I would fully expect them
today to find to play much better baseball, the Astros,
(10:21):
that is. So it's rare that good teams get hammered
like that two or three games in a row. But
it almost is a built in mental break, and so
a lot of times it's it's tougher to overcome those
getting beat down than it is back to back three
to two losses because you know that, man, then you
start to grind on your other three at bad. This
one's like, you know what, they were just better than
(10:42):
us today. We weren't very good, And that happens. So
it's a long way of describing sometimes the one you
when you're not I don't want to say check out,
but when you're mentally beat down a game like this,
you can recover quickly because you know in the seventh inning,
he's like, all right, man, go out and have a meal,
wake up to while let's get ba at this again.
This is one of those ten days it wasn't us. Hell,
(11:04):
you're gonna lose sixty five to seventy of them anyway,
So sometimes you got to give yourself a break. That
doesn't mean you quit competing, but you do mentally relax
a little more, saying this isn't a two to one
grind where might pop up with the bases loaded crushed us.
You're down nine, you're down eight, you're down seven. You
just you just you keep playing. But it's it's a
(11:24):
good mental break for yourself at times. And watch it.
Usually what happens. What do good teams do after they
get their ass kicked? Come back and play better the
next day and win usually if you're a team that's focused,
and I think the Astros have that in them.
Speaker 7 (11:38):
Well from Ravel does set to go tonight and he's
usually been at it's been.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
Yeah, pretty good. That's a good way to come back, right, Yeah,
not a bad way to come back, no doubt. Yeah.
Speaker 7 (11:47):
And to your question too about the average run differential
in games, couldn't find a run differential, but according to
Google AI, the average score of games is five point
two runs up per game, so it's around four point
eight to five point two per team. So to your point, Sean,
it's less than a run. Usually Vegas books give you
a line of a run and a half.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
Right, right, So you're paid, that's my point. And so
you're in those for the grind. But when you get
beat thirteen to three and you and it's just then
you're like, okay, well then you know what you do
Dan in truth and in truth, really the game wasn't
in this one. The game was in they start a
(12:29):
chance in seventh inning til they give what if I'm
not mistaken, they give up ten runs in the seventh
and eighth then inning combined the game up through the
sixth inning. You were still grinding last night, but it
was the last three innings that got them. So when
you even then, okay, down five, then what did they
score five more in the eighth? Then you're thinking okay
or two, but you kind of let you you're not
(12:49):
carrying it into midnight thinking oh gosh, we got beat
by this, but they were in it. The frustration is
why do we give up ten runs and two innings
at the end of the game. So it's bothersome. But
sometimes if it was wonder if the game stays like
it is and it's three to you know, it's what
was it was? I gues it was tied at one
point three two, three, three. If the game stays like
(13:11):
that and you're pushing yourself. Now, if it's thirteen to
two in the second inning, it's even a different more
mental a different mental approach. But you're in it. And
then the seventh inning and eighth and you have ten
runs combined and the two innings, well then you kind
of kick into okay, at the end, we got to
fix this. Now you're concerned, is just a what happened
with our bullpen and what's going on. They'll get it
fixed because we've seen the history of them this year
(13:34):
and really over the last year, is how good they've vent.
But what happens is when you get beat that bad,
it's like, okay, you look at it, but you also
start to dive into your own mechanics, like, okay, let
me work on some stuff. But the the only issue
last night was you're in the game, and then the
seventh inning, top of the seventh and give up five,
top of the eighth, to give up five, and now
(13:55):
just like that, you blinked and it was ten runs
and you look around and say, what happened? You don't
even have time to red to it. But sometimes when
you get beat like that, the overnight effect is that
can't happen again. I would fully expect the Astros to
come back and play much better baseball. But when you
get beat like that, it's much easier at times to handle.
Even though you were in it through six seven innings,
(14:17):
six for sure that you have and you got a
chance to win it. But ten quick runs and two
innings that lasted a while will will allow your mind
to say, okay, that's not us. Or a two to
one loss, you start to grind. We've seen a lot
of those, right Dan two, Like we left eight runners
in scoring position. This can't keep happening. I can tell
you what they do know. They're not giving up ten
(14:40):
runs in two innings in in a bullpen. They're not
going to push the that doesn't happen. That's the aberration
for them. So you can accept that a little more
as just being one of those nights at the end,
because this doesn't happen more than you can giving up
a touchdown pass with you're in it and you're up
by six and they go and beat you by seven
in the fourth quarter because you gave up a last
(15:01):
last drive. Those ones keep you up to night losses
like this. If you're the bullpen, you're like, Okay, this
wasn't us. You know, this isn't you. As opposed to
getting beat three to two four games in a row,
that becomes a problem. This is different. It just the
way it looked optically in the seventh and eighth inning
makes it heightened, like what happened? You're going to get
beat thirteen to three? Well, you know, get beat by
(15:23):
eight or ten runs a handful of times during the
year if you're a good team, and this is one
of them, just counted as one of your seventy losses.
It's the way it works.
Speaker 7 (15:31):
Yeah, those kick to the shorts, they will start to
stack up for you in the Astros hoping they can
minimize those. For the most part, as we mentioned fromber Valdez,
going to go tonight against Ryan Peppio six o'clock Astros
on deck coming your way.
Speaker 5 (15:43):
We do get some.
Speaker 7 (15:43):
Good news on Jordan Alvarez that of course will dive
into here during the show, but also with the bullpen
for the Astros last night, an aberration are a cause
for concern.
Speaker 5 (15:55):
I've got the answer. We'll talk about it here.
Speaker 7 (15:57):
It is Sean Salisbury Show, Sports Talk seven nine, putting
the logic in illogical.
Speaker 3 (16:04):
Former pro Sean Salisbury continues to.
Speaker 7 (16:07):
Break it down once seven ninety where you lose Renel
Blanco most recently, you haven't had Spencer Raghetty for It's
going to be over two months, maybe even three before
it's all said and done, before he comes back. He
threw again yesterday, by the way, that was good news.
But you also have Hayden was Nesky done for the season,
(16:28):
in addition to Christian Javier Luis Garcia, other guys that
you have been missing at times in this rotation. And
it started to make me wonder a little bit last
night with the inning that Brian King had, is are
you starting to get concerned that maybe the attrition to
the bullpen in the amount of innings that they've had
(16:48):
to start throwing, if that's starting to rack up and
we are going to start to see the less than
ideal results because they're just frankly tired.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
I of course it concerns me. Now last night, I'm
not like, oh my gosh, I'm this I'm devastated by
what happened. I'm thinking more aberration. But yes, and we've
talked about it since the beginning of the season. Even
when you get distance from your first two guys, meaning
you know, length Fromber and Hunter Brown, and it's going
(17:20):
to be different without you know, without Blanco obviously, and
the arms that are in Spencer Arraghetti and these guys
that are out you're now mixing and matching. You're still
working with a guy in Lance mccullors who had his
best start in two years. How much of that can
you expect six innings out of him? I mean, can
you continue to expect that? I don't know. We're going
(17:41):
to see. That's just it. There's some myths. Bullpen's been
fantastic and you're going to have these. But the concern
is concern going in even if you've got five good starters,
is okay, let's make sure did our bullpens preserve There's
no doubt. I think it's concerns for every team going
into a season, just because you want to make because
(18:01):
you never know when that star pitcher is gonna have
one of those years where he's not at his best
or you just don't know. Now, if you're a team
that's got seven front line starters, like a team like
the Dodgers, and your eighth guy can win a cy
young and your best guy hasn't pitched it over a year.
I mean, you know, or at least one of them.
You're still relying on Clayton Kershaw. You saw him there.
I pitched well a couple of nights ago and even
(18:22):
doing what he's doing. So if you have that, okay,
different story, but and your bullpen does get preserved a
little bit. But yeah, even going into this the Hobby
aer Garcia, with all the injuries going in, you are
still concerned. And you've got some new faces or guys
that have been asked to do more this year in
the bullpen. So last night's not the concern. Yeah, they
got knocked around. I wouldn't imagine that. You know, they
(18:44):
come out today and do their thing. We'll just say, okay,
back to normal. But it is the it's on the
short term fine, but it is the long term effect.
If you continue to have to you're not getting length
or the length you want out of five starters, and
you have to keep going to him. Of course, there's
no doubt. So yes, it's going to be a concern
all year. When you say concerned, I think a lot
(19:06):
of teams do. But you just don't want and more
for the Astros because well, in truth, about six of
your starters are out. I'm including Hobby Eron Garcia and
JP Frame. I'm including that group into this. So there's
not a team alive that can survive. Oh well survive, yes,
but where Oh the bullpen's going to be fine. We're
(19:28):
just going to We're gonna work them every day. Of course,
it beat you out, and games like last night concern you.
Three in a row would be a big problem. I
don't think you're going to see that, but yeah, I
get concerned in you, and I've talked about it. My
concern the whole time is when you hit August and
or late in the season, you know, July August than
(19:49):
what how are they feeling. Are they well rested? Because
you would love well rested half of August September bullpen.
Where these starters got it going? I mean, did their thing?
You know? I know the first two are I'm hoping
the mccolors, and then the rest is health. And then
when those guys come back, you know, if if you
do get Garcia later in the season, if you do
(20:11):
get Arraghetty sooner than later, and you get some link
out of some of these guys. There you go get
a body, Okay, that'll help. But yes, it's going to
be a concern all the time that it's not that
can these guys get people out? Yes, it's how often
are they going to have to? And that's that's a problem.
And it's really hard for anybody to overcome even a
good team all those injuries to starting pitching who is
(20:36):
pretty damn good, and then to and then to say, well,
our bulkan will be fine. It's it's not the talent,
it's the innings logged, and it can become a problem.
I'm just hoping last night was an aberration.
Speaker 7 (20:47):
Yeah, Brian King last night initially was credited with four
earned runs because they gave Victor Carrottini an error on
what would eventually be ruled a Jonathan Randa double as
it was hit so hard, so I guess they went
ahead and just decided to go ahead and give him
the base hits. So five earned runs in a third
of an inning last night for Brian King cause for concern.
Speaker 5 (21:09):
Here's what Joe Spot has to say.
Speaker 8 (21:12):
No, you know, just one night out of what twenty
something outing he's been out there, he's been really really
good fuss.
Speaker 7 (21:18):
And short, right to the point, Sean, because I believe
that I heard last night over nine innings in the
month of May out of Brian King and not a
single earned run given up during that time.
Speaker 1 (21:29):
Well even when we talked about it, it was yesterday
the day before, about just how good he's been. He's
been fantastic, And Joe's spot is saying, how much simpler
and more urgent can you say it did? Take a
look at the body of work that's called post sports
(21:50):
Man what you saw last night. It's happened to the
best closers. It's happened. I know, and I know we
don't think Marianno Rivera ever had a bad day. He did.
I mean, they do exist, not a lot of them,
but they exist. And so and I'm not comparing King
to Rivera, obviously different ones are closer ones not, but
just the fact that you know the expectation, but it happens.
(22:13):
You know, Marino throw four interceptions in a game. Otani's
going to strike out three times in a game this year.
It'll happen. So it's and like I said, I'm not
putting King in their category, but he's pitched really really well,
I mean, what do we expect, Well, King sucked well,
of course, everybody's got sucked in them for a night, Dan,
(22:35):
or a game or a day. They just do in
pro sports. And it's now if this trend continued and
asked Jill spoted this three weeks from now, then he'd say,
probably what you're saying, he's tired and worn out. I
don't think that's going to be the case, but yeah,
that happens. That happens to all of them. And we
just got a glimpse of it last night against Tampa,
and it's you know, it's bothersome, but it was going
(22:58):
to come at some point. The guy has been fantastic
for this team this year, and I would expect it
to continue. You just hope it continues, and so do I.
Without it being you know, where it's a where he's
in a marathon laboring. You don't want that. You want
him rested. But boys, he been good. I got zero
complaint other than they got beat last night and concern
about can he bounce back from that. I'm not worried
(23:20):
about it. His body of work this year has been fantastic.
Speaker 7 (23:23):
Well, the late Spike Dike, Sean used to say tough
day on Black Rock. So last night that was the
Astros black.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
Two of us hasn't seen him, brother and some of
us in sports more than others, I assure you. And
it happened. So it's the key is for him and
a bullpen to say, Okay, you know last night, that's
not us, that's the that machine, that that's not how
we do, and to mentally flush it out. You just
(23:51):
have to because the physical will come back. It's the
mental part. You just can't let that. Oh man, look
at it now. I hope this doesn't mean something. Also,
it means he had a crappy night and you'll get
another chance. At some point over the weekend, he'll get
another chance to pitch.
Speaker 7 (24:05):
We're gonna hear a little bit more from Astros manager
Joe Espada because he was asked a question of something
that I brought up last night on social media about
somebody on his team. Let you hear that, Billy Tom
see you guys right there, get you involved if you
want to join him someone three two one two five
seven ninety again seven one three two one two five
seven ninety Let's continue to roll along here Sean Salisbury
(24:27):
Show Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (24:31):
The Sean Salisbury Show continued, Billy gets.
Speaker 5 (24:36):
Us going this morning.
Speaker 1 (24:36):
Good morning, Billy, Hey, good morning guys.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
Well, uh, baseball happens.
Speaker 9 (24:42):
And it happened last night. I was a little more
concerned with King early on because I think the first
pitch goes to the backstop and he walks that guy,
and then he hits the next hitter, both left handed hitters,
and that's just not him. He's had a lot better
control this year than he got wild in the zone.
To me, that's just one game. Oops, it happens, and
(25:05):
no big deal, but a bigger concern that I'm seeing
right now with this team and Sean. In professional sports,
I know that NFL teams have time to practice, NBA
teams have some time to practice.
Speaker 2 (25:20):
But the baseball teams, I mean, they're playing every day.
Speaker 9 (25:22):
Do they really get any kind of fielding practice and
anything like that. I know they get a little warm
up in the before each game, but we've got some
outfielders who are making some throws, are trying to make plays.
I think they're trying to do too much. Instead of
keeping the runner at first, they're throwing through and guys
are taking the extra base, and that was a concern
that people were going to take an extra base on
(25:44):
our two based arm.
Speaker 1 (25:45):
But they're not.
Speaker 9 (25:46):
They're taking a base on the on the fielder's decisions.
These guys get time to work on that.
Speaker 1 (25:53):
That is a great, great question and point. The answer
during a long season is no, what are they doing
on their day off? They're not playing. I mean, somebody
may go into the Cajun hit, but they're taking a
day off. You're You're exactly right. In football, our whole
(26:13):
game is about practice. I mean, you play the three
hour game and for the next six days other than Tuesday,
and when Tuesday hits on our day off. In the NFL,
if you play a normal Sunday game, is your quarterback.
You're going in and help put You're putting a game
plan in together, you're watching tape, You're always doing football stuff,
(26:34):
practicemen working on your game, and then Sunday is the culmination.
Baseball is the opposite. You're playing a game every day,
so I guess you're practicing within it, but it's not
practice because he's a real they all count. So you
and the last thing that I believe guys are doing now,
if you're rehabbing like your on every day, you're trying
(26:56):
to get yourself right. You need rest, but you're trying
to get it right and working on you to see
how you know, Okay, how much stress can I take?
But for a healthy player, Altuve, if you're grinding and struggling, maybe,
or if you have a routine that on your day off,
you still like to go to to the cage or
hit off a tee I get it, or field ground balls, right,
(27:16):
But when are they doing it? Guys? I will rarely
see a guy now maybe at the All Star break,
you know, the day before you go, guys are back
out there. You don't working on or somebody on his
own doing lonely work. But as a team and as
a group once the season starts, you don't when you practicing,
and you're talking about full on practice where we're taking
(27:36):
twenty five ground balls in right field and hitting a
cutoff man on a throw to second, hitting they're making
the throw to third, hitting the cutoff guy first basement
on the throw to home. Yeah, all those little simple
mechanics that you work on all off season in spring training.
The answer is no. For football, we play every day's
practice the game is the one that gets in the way.
(27:57):
It's the opposite. You're playing a game every day, and
then you're on your time off hell with one hundred
and sixty two in a travel schedule, and you're on
the road get away day. You're asked and probably more
than likely headed out there and say I need to
go field some ground balls and right field or in
left field. Now, if you're struggling and you need extra work, yeah,
guys will put lonely work in. But the organized stuff working,
(28:19):
it's a great point. And that's why you did the
stay in sharp. It's hard to do because it's easy
to get caught up in okay, eight days. That's why
I always say quarterback play during the season that the
individual mechanics can start to falter because coaches are coaching
game plans. They're not coaching your individual mechanics. We don't
have time to slow down for your mechanics. That was
(28:40):
all off season stuff. We got to win, game plan,
game plan, But you're practicing, at least you're on there
for two and a half hours work at seven on
seven and throwing certain routes against certain coverages, and you're
practicing game plan and every day it's a one hundred.
It's completely different. We practice for the culmination of a
three hour game once a week. They play every day
and don't have an official real practice for the most
(29:02):
part until next spring. They'll do some lonely work on
if you're grinding and struggling, you may get to the
ballpark on game day two hours sooner so you can
take more batting practice. Yes, or I need to feel
so what you see on game day, fielding ground balls
during infield practice, those things that are part of the
pregame routine, that's their practice, our pre game routine six
(29:26):
days in football. So yes, huge difference. And Billy, it
is so easy. I think it was Billy who called,
wasn't it Billy? Billy, I think it's so easy, just
trying to remember we get all our called with Billy,
and Billy is always so well thought out on his questions.
It's true, and it's so easy to get lured into. Okay,
(29:47):
and even And what happens when you're tired, armslot changes
a little bit because your legs are a little bit
tired and weary. So what happens maybe you're a little
more straight up, a little more elevated, so your arm
or you try to over bends because you and then
the arm angle drops, or you're tired because you've thrown
a lot of pitches boom, or you haven't worked. And
so as far as in the outfield, okay, man, you know,
(30:09):
so what if you're lucky you get three balls hit
at you in a game and the autpha I don't
know what with the stats are but three balls that
are ground balls where a guy's running from first to third.
You got to hit a cutoff guy. Now it doesn't happen.
So you're really not working on it. You're just not
your pregame routine, is it. You don't get that two
hour grind in the cage, go out field, seventy five
(30:30):
fly balls. It's just you're just hanging on trying to
get fresh legs. It's a great point. It is a
great point. And it's easy to get lured into the
everyday thing of man. And if you went out and
had dinner with the teammates and it woke up a
little late the next day and you feel a little
slugsh all those things coming to play, you need rest,
so you don't practice. We practice every day in football
(30:50):
two hours to two and a half hours. They practice
again next spring other than their pregame routine. It's a
great point by.
Speaker 7 (30:56):
You, and it's all individual work. If you get there
early enough for batting practice, you'll see that there's a
couple of coaches with fun goos. Maybe if somebody needs
some work, you know, learning at the nuances of the outfield.
Speaker 1 (31:07):
Within their arrival at batting practice and premiate. That's exactly right.
That's what I'm saying. You're doing a little. This is individual.
You tap Joe spot on the show and say, Joe,
can can we get one of the can we get
somebody hit me some fly balls? I'm struggling picking it up. Yes,
but it's not within an organized practice on an off day, right,
It's it's rare. That's just you got to you gotta
you know, I need an extra ten minutes in the cage.
(31:28):
I need twenty five more ground balls in center field.
That's what that comes to. But you got to ask
for that because you practice, and sometimes those guys won't
take batting practice, right, you warn't out I'm not I'm
not taking VP today and you go through field a
few ground balls during your you know, throw it around
the infield, you go. So it's a different grind practice
wise for us in the NFL during the season than
(31:50):
it is for baseball, which they're all game related. We
truthfully are all practice and game plan related, and three
hours on Sundays just the culmination. Otherwise all our time
is spent practicing.
Speaker 5 (32:02):
Yeah, Sean.
Speaker 7 (32:03):
In my entire over thirty years of either watching or
playing baseball, I've seen a major league baseball team take
in and out one time, the Astros when they played
the Yankees to open up then and Ron Field. I
saw them take in and out and I was like,
what a major league team does this? Now, that's on
the high school and college level. If you want that,
you're getting it during batting practice. You're getting out there early,
(32:25):
Tony Paris, Cheka, Dave Clark, somebody is out there with
a fungo.
Speaker 5 (32:28):
That's how you're getting it.
Speaker 1 (32:29):
That's exact, and you got to ask for it. That's
your extra work you're putting in, no doubt.
Speaker 7 (32:33):
Yeap, So, Astro's a rough one last night, no doubt
about it. It was also a rough one again for
Ryan Gusto. How much longer are his days in this
Astros rotation?
Speaker 5 (32:45):
We will let you decide Right here.
Speaker 7 (32:47):
It is the Sean Salisbury Show Sports Talk seven to ninety.
Speaker 3 (32:52):
This Sean Salisbury Show continues to continue.
Speaker 7 (32:57):
You saw that I had to do something that probably
you had to do numerous times all throughout your career,
which is hit the smelling salts.
Speaker 5 (33:10):
Why, oh, I don't know. I mean, had you ever
had to hit the smelling salts?
Speaker 1 (33:14):
For me? It was talking about in my non So
you talk about my playing career. Oh yeah, oh, a
handful of times. Yeah, because you got your bell rung
enough that I can remember a handful of times. In particular,
I had no idea that was how many fingers you see,
here's the smelling salts. Got to go back out and play,
and you would lie to the trainer so you wouldn't
have to come off the field because well, when you
(33:35):
got an opportunity, you didn't want to blow it. So, yes,
I happened. We were playing Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Roderick Thomas
hit me in Minnesota back in my helmet, hit the
ground after I went to the ground, and for the
entire game from then on it was middle of the
second quarter, I couldn't call it playing the huddle and
we didn't. We had to they wig wag him and
(33:57):
that you know, it was right right around transistor getting
into your helm right. But Steve Jordan, our tight end
from Brown, we called him Ivy, great player, but he
always liked to look at those signals being wigwagged in
by the quarterbacks and the coordinator and get ahead of
the play before we got in the huddle. So he'd
look over there and get the signal. He studied the
signals so he get the signals, so he knew before
(34:20):
the quarterback got in the huddle, step the hudle called
the play. That would have been the second time he
heard it and it came. I'm sure glad he did it,
because in that game I could execute a play after
I took that hit. Went to the sidelines. After the hit,
they gave you the smelling salts, and so every time
on the sidelines I'd come over as often as I
could in between series and try to wake your ass up.
(34:41):
But I could. I could see the signal and I
could execute the play, but I couldn't. The play wouldn't
come out of my mouth properly in the huddle, especially
when it was a long one, you know, explode the
double right zap scat right five eighty five dodge x
post addition would't comet out right because you couldn't. You couldn't,
(35:01):
you just wouldn't. It wouldn't happen. So I told Ivy,
I said, Steve, you've got to tell me. While while
I'm talking, you tell me. You get the signal, tell
me and I'll walk through. You'll say double right, and
I'll say double right, and we'll work together. And he did.
He helped me by calling the play because he knew
the signal, so he'd call it, I'd recall it.
Speaker 8 (35:19):
Go.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
Alls I needed to know was okay, protection and play okay.
And I was able to execute a finish the whole game.
But I can't. I have had no idea until the
next day. We went to film. Zero idea what we did, discribed.
I have zero idea what went on, but you execute
the play the memory. So he went in and watched
the next day and we won the game. I was
able to get through it, but the rich Gannon, who
(35:42):
I think it was, broke his thumb or something early
in the game. So I had the opportunity. I wasn't
going to tell those Oh yeah, I can't think straight
because I wasn't going to come out of the game.
Plus and you're getting to your third guy, and I
didn't want to miss an opportunity. So back in those days,
our protocol was doctor, come over and look or how
you feel and give me those smelling salts. I'm good
to go, and he went and play's that's so honest
(36:05):
to God. And had Steve Jordan not been able to
help me through it, I would have a hard time
getting you know, the play out and the protection and
all the stuff that needed to do. But once I
got to the line of scrims, I could still execute
the play because it was just football. But it was
the verbiage from my head to my mouth that I
had trouble getting out. But Steve helped walk me through
(36:25):
it and we end up winning the game. So smelling
salts were big that day. And so yes, I know
exactly what you're talking. I thought you met smelling sauce
for me on social media. Oh no, I don't need
those that much. I just shut him down. But yeah,
I definitely needed him in my career. Yep.
Speaker 7 (36:39):
Definitely you need that extra pick me up at times,
and you know, today was one of those days because
the game ended at about ten thirty last night, had Astros
tenth inning, and then you know, coffee wasn't one hundred
percent getting the job done this morning, so I said,
all right, it's time to bring in the real heavy
guns here and shout out to the Rod Ryan Show
for helping us out on that seven starts this season
(37:00):
for Ryan, Gusto and Sean he has gotten to the
fifth and even a little bit more than the fifth
only four of those times. He's gotten into the fifth
and beyond only twice this year. So after the game
last night, Joespotta asked by Chandler Rome of The Athletic
on Gusto, is this tenable to keep this trend going
(37:22):
with the Astros, writing, Yeah, we're.
Speaker 8 (37:24):
Going to continue to, you know, to send him back
out because we believe in the fact that he can
do it. We've seen him do it. It's it's you know,
it's not very common to see him walking these many guys.
He's always been a strike thrower, he has always been efficient.
It just he hasn't been able to do that. But
will continue to give up, you know, opportunities and and
(37:45):
help him out trying to get them trying to get
him to take us deep in the game.
Speaker 7 (37:49):
Now, Sean, there is precedent for this when it comes
to young pitchers, and we even saw it last year.
A couple of examples that come to mind, Spencer Arraghetty
and Hunter Brown.
Speaker 1 (37:58):
I mean you could have very easily have.
Speaker 7 (37:59):
To that started against the Royals last year, said yeah,
this just isn't working for Hunter.
Speaker 1 (38:05):
Leagues. Yes, absolutely did say it, and I've thought about it.
We did say it, and it was it was a
regular for for about four or so starts or five
whatever it was at the beginning of the year. It was.
It was to the point of you can't count on it.
He needs to go down and get work. And well
then it took the Was it in Detroit that he
did it? And maybe it was Detroit came out.
Speaker 5 (38:27):
Of the pen that Saturday team. Yeah, it was a
short start for.
Speaker 1 (38:31):
There you go and pitched his ass off and the
rest is history. Whatever it was. And in the process
of that, you know, throwing fat you know, taking the
inside part of the plate and what would you know
it with the four seam or two seam, I mean
adding the pitch. I guess what I'm saying and then
being able to tack the inside, you know, the inner
half of the plate and take that because it's his
two and then execute it. Now, he's a dog man,
(38:54):
It's a frigging dog. So we did go through that.
Matter of fact, we had far more questions at this
time last year. You're a little sooner about Hunter Brown
than you're bringing up about Ryan Gusto. It was, it
was maybe it's because our expectations were so high for
Hunter Brown. It was it was hard to watch and
then he turned around and it's a real easy watch
now and it's a fun watch. And I'm not saying
(39:15):
Gusto is going to be Hunter Brown, but Dan could
it simply be defining a role for him. I think
of a young pitcher, bullpen, starter, starter, bullpen, done both.
And I'm not saying that. Well, you just hear pro
you got to just of course you do. And you
heard Joe. He's throws normally throws strikes, and I don't
making excuses for him. He's going to have to find
(39:37):
his way. But I also know that when rolling, when
it's tough. Now by Joe saying that he defined it,
he's going we're gonna run him out there's starting pitcher.
So that's how Gusto has to think. But at times
this year he've been in the bullpen, he's been a
starting pitcher, So I would get you're sitting there trying
to define your role, which is a compliment to you
but also can be a detriment. You're like, well, we've
(39:58):
seen JP Frantz do it, and do it. Well, we've
seen guys do it. Hoobber was a Bulten guy, long
relief guy, became the star. So we've seen it. We've
seen the movie, and he is a strike thrower, Gusto.
But maybe in as you know, as he continues to
work through, knowing that they're going to stick with him
and he they're running him out there, they can help
define his role.
Speaker 7 (40:17):
That would be nice, That absolutely would And I mean
he's been fantastic as a reliever this year. The starting
portion of it has been tough. But here's the other thing.
You run into Sean really quick, and maybe we can
carry this over in the hour two is it's easy
to say give Miguel Elola a chance, or give you know,
aj blue Ball a chance. We've seen enough of Ryan
(40:38):
Gusto Elola for example, he's been really good in the
month of May. His last five starts, twenty three innings.
The average, the basic math, right there, Sean tells you
he's not getting out of the fifth inning.
Speaker 1 (40:50):
Us.
Speaker 7 (40:50):
So if he's not getting out of the fifth inning
at that level, what makes you think that he's going
to do it at this level?
Speaker 1 (40:56):
Yeah, and then truth, Dan will go to break and discuss.
But look around baseball, are we shocked? I mean, hasn't
this become the Norman baseball? I'm not saying we can.
We have to sit there and say it's okay, but
the Norman baseball? I mean, how many starting pitchers are
getting to six innings in baseball now? In truth? Very
(41:17):
hard exactly, there's far more than aren't.
Speaker 5 (41:20):
Seven innings? Starts are the new complete game.
Speaker 1 (41:23):
That's exactly right. Six innings and you're a workhorse five
innings and we will carry you off the field on
our shoulders if you pitched well for five and two thirds.
So really, this isn't a major adjustment. You mentioned what
four of the seven games he's got into the fifth inning. Yeah,
I'll bet you that's better than the average. That's the
average in baseball. I'll bet you. I'll bet you that's
(41:44):
about I'm talking about Vet. I'm not just talking about
young pitcher. I'm talking about KG Veteran's guys have been
I'll bet you most of those guys that are even
the ones that aren't pitching into the seventh inning, Like
I said, just from the naked eye and optics. So
this is, oh my gosh, and how do we quit
on Hunter Brown? We won't be seeing this. So I
(42:05):
like the fact that Joe's going to stick with it.
Speaker 10 (42:06):
Now.
Speaker 1 (42:06):
They will come a point if you don't those strikes
and it keeps happening, and then you'll be a full
time bullpen guy. So if he wants to be a starter,
he's gonna have to start thinking like a starter and
no spotts, pitches and commanded. But we've had that conversation
about a lot of pictures. So we're talking about Gusto,
a young pitcher, but look around the league. That'll be
a problem in every clubhouse on a planet. Oh man,
we'd like to go deeper with our starters. How many
times you heard that from a manager around baseball? So
(42:30):
to me, you know, throwing strikes is important. But the
conversation that we're paniced. The guy's not getting into the
sixth inning, Tell him to get in line. Across major
league baseball, it's been accepted that if you can get
the seven innings, you are a star, stud and man alive.
That is the new complete game. And the truth is
most guys won't get the seven innings the way a
(42:51):
guy fifteen years ago got to nine. That'll be rare.
How many times you think this year Hunter Brown's pitching
into the eighth inning as good as he is, how
many times I don't even think he has? Maybe it's
louder for the people of the back to here. There
you go. We can discuss, but why are we shocked?
(43:11):
This is what baseball is. Specialization. Give me five and
two thirds and that's a quality start. Okay, So Gusto's
in inning away and two other starts from being man
six or seven times he's got into the fifth, then
we'd be raving about it, which means he's a handful
of pitches away from that.
Speaker 7 (43:30):
Yeah, I got the answer that you asked about average
major league starts.
Speaker 5 (43:33):
Share that with you.
Speaker 7 (43:34):

Sean Salisbury, USC troupes, longtime friend, Shawn Salisbury, Dan matthewscuse,
this is the Sean Salisbury Show.
Speaker 2 (44:25):
You what on ALBAA is.
Speaker 7 (44:26):
Going to face a live pitching this afternoon over at
dike In Park and College Baseball UH coach Todd Wooding
coming back for a sixteenth season. N c DOAA Regionals
in baseball start a little bit later on today. Sean,
the answer to your question about the average start for
major league pitchers is around eighty seven pitches, and the
(44:51):
average innings worked in a game is five and a third.
Again Google Ai to the rescue, as you said, five
and a third.
Speaker 1 (45:03):
That's that, that's where that's where the line is, right,
he said, the average yep? Okay, so and four of
what four of the seven times he's worked into the
fifth inning? Is that what you said? Yes?
Speaker 7 (45:15):
And he's he has worked believe one start five and
two thirds?
Speaker 1 (45:19):
Yes, all right, so four one more start if he's in.
If he's in four uh, four of eight, he's kind
of averaged somewhere in the middle right every every other start, right,
Sure he gets into the fifth inning? Is that who
baseball is? Isn't that where we are now in baseball?
In truth? For me, it's not throwing eighty seven pitches
(45:42):
five and the third innings the average first starter young pitcher.
So the truth is, while alarming, probably shouldn't be the
word throwing strikes and getting going and defining his role.
The guy's been valuable in the bullpen. You're trying to put,
you know, make him a starter, and you've committed to him,
and they say they're going to keep unning them out.
He's not far Dan, when you think about it, a
(46:02):
couple more starts out of the fifth inning and he's
above the average, correct and that's what how many pitches
would that be? Dan? Maybe eight or more? Six to
eight more strikes, you know what I'm saying, Sure, get
ahead of the count, ten more pitches, ten more strikes
to get ahead in the count. I'm just trying to
do the you know, the the analytics and just trying
to look at it from a positive. Listen, he's got
(46:23):
to get better at throw strikes because he's a strike thrower,
as Joe said, But they're sticking with him for what
for the reason why they know it's there, and you know,
obviously if it doesn't ever get to that point, you
got to adjust it. But think what we're asking. We
are simply asking for a handful more strikes thrown to
get you to five and a third and now you're
living where the average is in Major League Baseball. Now
(46:46):
think about that when we all do this. So you
stay to look like, man, well he's only a he's
only two more outs away from being five and two thirds.
So in truth, he's not that far off, considering he's
had two roles this year, so trying to define one.
So I think I don't want to say we're cutting
him a brake. He's a pro and he gets paid
(47:06):
and he's got to fix it, and I'm quite sure
throwing strikes is something that he wants to do. But
in truth, throw a few more strikes that gets you
out of that gets you out of the fourth, end
of the fifth, Throw a few more strikes in the
fifth inning, and you're five and two thirds and guess
what you're doing. You're living where most of baseball pitchers live.
Not that far off. I don't think it's a panic situation.
I think for them and the ass has just been
(47:28):
we just got to get ahead in the account and
throw more strikes. And look at the difference. Dan, when
he comes out of the bullpen, he's been like you said,
he's been really good. But when he's the guy going
out there first, so he might this may simply be
I don't know if it's man all. I'm going to
ask Steve Spark, you know, when we get Steve on
again and kind of is a is this an adjustment,
a major mechanical adjustment or is it just mentally dialing
(47:49):
in and getting the head in account whatever that is.
And I don't know how many accounts he's been behind
in as a starter. We can find those two, but
we're not he's not far off, Dan, because four or
seven times he's been in the fifth inning, which is
that's the average in Major League baseball. He does it
five out of seven times, six out of eight times.
Then we're saying, oh, he's doing what most of the
pitchers in baseball are doing. So I don't think we're
(48:11):
that far off with him, and I think he's been
pretty damn good in the bullpen. Just amount of throwing
strikes as a starter.
Speaker 7 (48:16):
Yeah, throwing it down thirty one pitches in the first
inning last night did him no favors.
Speaker 1 (48:20):
That's exactly right. Eighty three pitch problem.
Speaker 7 (48:23):
Yeah, eighty three pitches was his second highest of the season.
His season high on pitch count is ninety and he
had that late last month against the Detroit Tigers.
Speaker 1 (48:33):
Yeah, there you go. So it's not it was. And
it's obvious that getting a quick start where he can
get out with a ten pitch inning would be great,
wouldn't it twelve pitch inning where you you're swinging first
and all sadden, you're in the third inning and you've
got your pitch counts at thirty. Okay, now it's that. Now,
then the mindset changes. So I remember, the guy's young,
(48:54):
so we gotta, you know, we gotta give a chance
to go for the gusto. You see what I did there.
Speaker 7 (48:58):
That sounds very good. You snuck that in there very well.
That that was That was good five hole work by you.
Speaker 1 (49:05):
There you go, you know that, and then you know me.
Speaker 7 (49:07):
With the minimal hockey reference there on.
Speaker 1 (49:11):
We need more hockey, more hockey references. Well, I mean
we definitely.
Speaker 7 (49:16):
If if you weren't too sad to see the team
up in Dallas lose last night, well then I've got
good news for you because that did happen. But we
just man, we need the NHL in this town. We
need the NHL in this town in the worst way,
and we need a good team, which the NHL has
been pretty good at doing. Whenever they do go to
a new market, they want to make sure that team
has a chance to compete early.
Speaker 1 (49:37):
No doubt about it. And uh, tune in because the
team that's in the standing. We we got a hell
of a Stanley Cup ahead of us. And that dude
who played in who plays in Edmonton's pretty good, isn't he.
Speaker 5 (49:49):
Yes, you're talking about McDavid.
Speaker 1 (49:50):
Oh, you're done right. I think Connor McDavid's fantab the
world's going to get a chance to see if you haven't.
He's worth your ticket price. He's pretty damn good. So Dan,
can I get off baseball for a second? Something? Crawl?
Please do? And I hate that. I like laughing and
joking and having fun and talking about her ashes even
when they have one of those games where it's like, Okay,
(50:12):
we'll be back at it today. Champlain Park, Minnesota just
shut out the defending state champions Rogers is the name
of the school in back to back games to win
the class for a Section five softball championship. Both victories
came behind the arm of Marissa Rothenberger. And she looks
(50:34):
like she's about six'. TWO a biological male competing in girls.
Softball pitched fourth pitch both both, games completed both games seven,
innings and they won both. Games she started. Both but
she's a heat and we're allowing this to be to
happen and encourage it in high school. Sports so you
(50:58):
got a. Mail these girls are playing in a state
championship that may be the only time they may never
play another baseball softball game again when they leave and
go to. College AND i don't know how many you
are going to get a. Scholarship maybe some are chancellor
in state championship and a biological male is throwing both,
(51:20):
games back to, back complete games and winning a state. Championship,
LISTEN i don't care who you. Date if you're, gay
those things will bother. Me if you want to transition
from a male to a, female you got you and
your family discuss. IT i don't have to endorse, it
nor DO i have to be tolerant of it and, say, oh,
(51:41):
cool thumbs. UP i can't wait till that happens in my.
Home if you do, it that's, great that's. FINE i
don't have to. SAY i don't have to say it's
okay to appease a crowd or five people to, say, hey,
Man sewan loves. It, No sean, doesn't. OKAY i hate
talking to the third person of all the things we
do in society and all the things we fight for
(52:04):
for our, women young, women older women that have fought
forever to have an opportunity for a family and their,
kid to get a, scholarship to win a championship, ring
or to be on the team that won this champlain
and the starting pitcher to actually be a. Female but
(52:27):
you lose to a male because there is only two.
Genders make no mistake about, it and people can argue
with me all they. Want this is. Unacceptable if your
daughter is on the other, team or your daughter was
supposed to be the starting, pitcher but you just said hell,
No we're going to let the dude pitch fourteen straight
innings two. Games major problem THIS i don't have to
(52:49):
be tolerant of AND i never. Will men do not.
Belong we got our own. Sport if you want to
go have a transgender. LEAGUE i don't have problem with,
That go do your. Thing men don't belong in women's,
sports and they never. Will there'll never be a time
when that's. Okay. Never there's never a, time and there's
never a Time i'll be tolerant of. It it's, unacceptable
(53:10):
AND i would have understood If rodgers was, said we're
not doing. This the school that got beaten back to my.
Games women have fought so hard to be seen in,
sports the voice to, show and we've got some really
good players in women's. Sports it's unacceptable to have a
(53:31):
dude going and dominating a team first state, championship to
play in the state. Playoffs it's. Unacceptable so you can
get as mad as. YOU i could care. Less i'm
tolerant about ninety nine percent of the things that. HAPPEN
i don't have to like all the things that, happen
But i'll deal with. It and WHEN i say, tolerant
Meaning we're not going to go up and tell the
(53:52):
people At Champlain park that you can't do, this but
they shouldn't be doing. This and the fact that we allow,
this anybody that endorses, this you could. Stay it's this is,
demented is what it. Is allowing and encouraging. This and
the crazy thing about, IT i even see some women
who in the past have fought for and fought, for you,
(54:15):
know the voting and fought for, well more women in,
sports more women in front, offices more women in coach of,
course more respect for women in. SPORTS i get broadcaster
all of, it and then this happens and they're okay with. It,
No i'm, sorry and things like this ruined my. DAY
(54:37):
i have a, daughter she's obviously not in high school,
anymore she's you, know in her late. Twenties but this can't.
Happen and if it was my IF I i can
tell you, This If champlain goes on to win the
state championship with, this with this, person they're they're not
the state. Champions and it diminishes the other ladies on
(54:58):
that team that have played their ass off and fought
their ass off to put themselves in. Position this diminishes
The Champlain park victories over The rogers team In minnesota
because a, man a grown up man or, boy whatever
you want to call, it that through fourteen straight innings
(55:18):
and back to back games and gets the. Wins. Unacceptable
forget the. Asterisks they should not Be this should not be.
Allowed men have zero place playing against youth, women high school,
women pro. Women it is zero, place AND i don't
know why we continue to allow. It but it's sad
(55:40):
for me to say BECAUSE i love the people in
the state Of, minnesota because they spent a lot of
time playing there and they were great to, me and
it is a great. Place, unfortunately leadership has turned it
into a trash ass place with decisions like, this and
the people In minnesota and the people on her team
and or his team and the other teams deserve. Better
(56:02):
what what? What What what if eight? Guys what what
if eight people in that area wanted to do? This
what if eight wanted to transition daim then what?
Speaker 8 (56:11):
Then?
Speaker 3 (56:11):
Then?
Speaker 1 (56:11):
What what a six of? Them, oh so we're only
allowed one dude playing on the women's. Team is that
how they'd approach? It what happens if that? Community we
have communities all over there's communities that have you, know
the certain religions and they're they live in the same
neighborhood or you know the people. There there's communities like
that all over the. Country so what if this, community
just what if we play the what if game all?
(56:32):
Time what if this community said and they accept people who, Transition,
okay you want to. Transition what if five dudes that
were women THAT i mean that were men that now
playing women's, sport and there then their lineup's got five
guys in it that are transitioning to that they they're
they're females, now they're transgender females, Now but they were five.
(56:56):
Guys you got one at, shortstop one at first base of,
picture then would it be a. Problem but would the
people on that team or with the people, Men, oh one's,
okay well that's. It you can get that dump button,
Please triple, eight thank you very. Much they're gonna say
we go to, break we'll come back and finish this
(57:16):
dand with a steak out if you don't, Mind i'm
so when you have four of, them so then it's.
Okay now you call in a fight with me all
until the cows come. Home this is. Unacceptable men don't
belong playing women's. Sports i'd love to see four of
them and see how we responded. Then but one's. Okay,
(57:40):
now men don't belong women's. Sports they got to do. Better,
well give you the.
Speaker 7 (57:44):
Floor and, also if we have time speaking of, men
we are a weird. Species if we have time for,
that we will definitely throw it. In it Is Sean Salisbury,
Show Sports talk seven, ninety.
Speaker 2 (57:57):
The hottest takes in, sports so emotionally tied to the.
Speaker 3 (58:01):
Team The Sean Salisbury show continues alight that On Sports
talk seven.
Speaker 1 (58:07):
Ninety all, Right.
Speaker 5 (58:11):
Sean what are you hearing out there?
Speaker 2 (58:13):
Now The salisbury?
Speaker 3 (58:15):

Speaker 2 (58:18):

Ninety astros thirteen three losers last night to The. Rays
Jord On albare is gonna take live pitching on the
field today and The texans back to work for another
round of OTA's. Practices sean at, you, yeah, yeah you
can go ahead and get to your, Steakout, DAN i
(58:41):
don't want. TO i could talk about the men and
women's sports all day every. Day i've all ended with,
this and, Well i'm sure you have something a little
lighter and funner to talk. About but when is it
gonna happen that four transgenders decide that that's a community
that they're, accepted that they can.
Speaker 1 (59:01):
Go play in women's? Sports will will everybody be? Okay
when five guys are playing on a women's softball? Team?
One oh, yeah we seem to, say will they be?
Okay will the team that allows it to be? Okay
the other parents that have daughters, there and the playful
they're playing? Against? Okay oh, yeah this, ONE i don't.
Know we shouldn't even no male should be allowed in
(59:23):
women's sports at any. Level but so what's going to
happen when three in the same community are on the same.
Team then then are people going to be up in arms, saying,
men this is just too? Much but one wasn't when
they go out and pitch fourteen innings back to, back
seven inning complete games and. Win yeah, no, sorry you're not,
now not twenty years from, now not twenty years you're
(59:45):
ever going to convince me that men should be playing women's.
Sports if you want to be, transgender that's a you.
THING i don't have to approve of, it and it's not.
Me you do what you got to do and it's.
Okay but and if there's a league FOR i don't
have no. Problem it's the men in women's sports that bothers.
Me they deserve women to play against, women to have
(01:00:06):
same opportunities to win championships and. Scholarships it's just way too.
Blatant SO i will never support men playing in women's.
Sports and quite, FRANKLY i think people that do don't get.
IT i just. DO i don't think they get. It
and if you're one listening and you, say, Well, SEAN
i think men should play in women's, sports well then
(01:00:27):
you And i'll have a good debate And i'll tell
you with, respect you don't get. It they do not
belong playing in women's sports. Period so now to a lighter, Subject,
dan whatever it is you have for the.
Speaker 7 (01:00:38):
Stakeout, yeah AS i, mentioned you, know, us as, men
we are weird. Species and this story definitely feeds into said.
Thoughts So Doctor squatch is a, soap body wash deodorant
brand that is out. There they've teamed up With Sidney.

indeed made with waters That sweeney bathed.

one get make. MONEY i know the. BRAND i see
it all the. Time you'll see it in. Stores it's
going to know they've got soap and. Body you're exactly,

doing why don't you just go lounge in that bathwater

your private parts and, everything and maybe shave while you're
in the bathtub, too shave it and laying and then
send me a bottle of. It What, yet they will
(01:02:48):
go off the shelves in a. Hurry people will keep.
It they may even use it. Held some dumb idiot
may drink. It, okay that's what we we. Are we
are about as dumb as you can. Be the crazy
thing about. It the campaign's gonna sell you watch they
are going to move. Product and that's how dumb we.
(01:03:08):
Are and, people if people are going to be dumb
enough to buy, it that's WHAT i want to. KNOW i,
mean who's buying? It and they? Will and you are,
right we are a very there's some ignoramus in us
and boil, boy this is at the top of the. List, now,
LISTEN i don't begrudge people for doing their marketing. Campaign
the fact that she, said, yeah here's my. Bathwater i'm
(01:03:29):
gonna save it for. You, no, Bud, LISTEN i. Don't
but you know there's some people out there with their,
whatever they're little stupid fetishes or. Nuts and think about
how this had to come. Down they had to get her.
APPROVAL a bunch of people in that company sat around
a conference room table and, SAID i got a great. Idea,
(01:03:50):
well what's that? Idea what's the? IDEA a new brand of,
soap a different, smell what a new body? Wash we
got a new, endorser who a new? Influencer? Great what
do you? Mean, well we we'd, like let's. Start let
let's give away your. Bathwater oh, Great. Yeah, no she's
not that. Hot nobody. Is there is no male or
(01:04:13):

Speaker 12 (01:04:35):
Need.
Speaker 1 (01:04:35):
Bathwater, No i'm talking about bathwater that somebody bathed and
soaked and shaved. In oh, man that makes me. Horny,
sure let me get.
Speaker 7 (01:04:42):
That there's a lot of there's a lot of different things.
Here AND i, mean you, know to your point about
The Don draper pitch right, THERE i, mean imagine how that.
WENT i don't know if you've got the cardboards and
everything else to be able To, HEY i got, it
guys and, ladies this is what we.
Speaker 1 (01:04:58):
Do and then people have agreed with. It, yeah it's
not just a person. Says somebody else has to. Say you,
know that's a damn good. Idea And Kidney sweeney's. Bathwater
what if she had a tough yeast? Infection oh what that?
One how about how about she threw the old MAN

Month let's get that. Bathwater, yeah that'll make you. Horny,
(01:05:19):

Speaker 1 (01:05:45):

Speaker 5 (01:05:59):
Tabloid women read that. Too your wife could read this.
Speaker 7 (01:06:02):
Too your girlfriend could read this, too and she sees
bathwater bliss in the. Room now you've just started an
entire new can of worms for yourself THAT i don't
think you want?
Speaker 13 (01:06:12):
It?
Speaker 1 (01:06:12):
Right why do you buy? This, yeah it's a great.
Point who retrieves her? Bathwater? Hey?
Speaker 13 (01:06:19):
Man you?
Speaker 1 (01:06:20):
Dressed? Yeah and he got eight dudes sitting in there
with with cups they got they saved from beer night
at the, ballpark you, know the plastic cup they give,
you and they cleaned it, out and now they're going
in and they're just scooping it into a. Bucket and
then is it like is it like you know the
when a medical place where they you, know they transfer
it where they got to keep it on ice or
(01:06:40):
what do you? Do how do you preserve? It so
you grab, it you stick it in. THERE i, mean
what are we? Doing and then some cars got a
police escort to the next, location so we Get Sydney
sweeney's bathwater there so we can get it under testing
and make sure it's done, right and it's we've got
it to the perfect do or do you not have
to do? Anything you simply take it from her bathtub
(01:07:04):
to your store or whatever it, is your your corporate,
office and you pour it into a, jar A mason,
jar and, say let's stick it on the. Shelves man
who gets? This and then you have the audacity to
give us an authentic where we're going to put a
little tag on, it say it's Authentic Sydney sweeney had
(01:07:25):
her yeast infection in this bath. Tub. Yeah see when
you paint it like, that you don't want to do
your dam no it like? That? Right, yeah those things
they do have those every now and. THEN i do
believe there's cycles, monthly and she's probably at an age
where she hasn't reached where she doesn't have a. Cycle
so she's, young so all those. Things, Well, sean how
can you think about that? Stuff, well how can you
(01:07:46):
think about bathwater from some celebrity that you're going to
buy and uses your marketing campaign for good? Smells? Yeah, no, Sorry.
Speaker 5 (01:07:56):
See some jobs are worth bragging.
Speaker 7 (01:07:59):
Abouts but you're sitting next to the guy that works
for said soap company at a. Bar, hey what do you?
DO i work for a soap. Company oh that's. Cool
what do you do for? THEM i Take Sydney sweeney's
bathwater LIKE i don't think you, know maybe on the
surface you think that washed out slurpy. Cup, yeah, okay, yea, yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:08:17):
Dude i've said it numerous.
Speaker 7 (01:08:18):
Times the most effective cult in the world because of
how stupid we are as, men would be a really hot.
Woman i'm telling you she. Would she would Have Jim
jones be. DAMNED a really hot woman would Put Jim
jones to.
Speaker 1 (01:08:31):
Shame oh can you imagine the cult following. That it'd
Be it'd BE i, mean maybe lined, up it'd be
miles and miles. Long you you wouldn't matter of, fact
you wouldn't even have to. Recruit they'd recruit. You you're exactly, Right,
yep you're exactly, right and you know. What this is
how they. Start so keep your eyes, open, brother keep
your eyes. Open that's. It you know what it? Was IT. C. S.
Speaker 7 (01:08:54):
LEWIS i think that said it's easier to trick someone
than to convince them that they've been. Tricked, well, yeah
that's that's how it. Happens it's one of Those, hey
how DID i end up? Here, well you unravel a
little bit, There. BUD i think you'll soon have figure it.
Speaker 1 (01:09:07):
Out all.
Speaker 7 (01:09:08):
Right we talked about this a couple of weeks ago
and it sparked a lot of. Conversation but we also
got the man who made it, Happen Rob manfred going
on the record about why now For Pete. Rose let
you hear From helmut right. Here it Is The Shawn Salisbury.
Show Sports talk seven. Ninety The Shawn Salisbury show. Continued
(01:09:30):
good Morning, Thomas.
Speaker 13 (01:09:32):
Good Morning, Dad good Morning, Shaw good Morning. Triple how
you guys doing this?
Speaker 1 (01:09:36):
Morning very? Well? Thanks?
Speaker 13 (01:09:37):
Man, Hey, Hey, Sean i'll feel you on the transgender
up In. Minnesota, Man, hey whyon't they put the onus
back on the? Teammates, also the teammate should step in
and say something that they disagree with.
Speaker 1 (01:09:54):
It you talking about Basically, thomas women speaking up for women? Agree. Correct,
Yes now here's, then and you make a great. Point
it's you, know when a when a male AND i.
DON'T i don't know how often it happens in women's
softball that a great female pitcher goes back to back
game seven. INNINGS i. Don't in high, school maybe it
(01:10:17):
happens more often than. Not but when a, man a transgender,
female when a male goes seven innings in two games
and is standing on the mount and, dominating that's not
what women's sports were set up. For and you're one
hundred percent. Correct here's the sad thing is that women
actually did. That they have to that if they do
stand up and, say, well we're not going to play
(01:10:39):
if we have a male or we're not going to
the criticism or or the opposing, team which we've seen people,
Say i'm Not i'm not going to get into this boxing,
Match i'm not going to run this track. Meet you,
know we know all the stories in the. Past but you're,
right it'll it'll probably stop when the people on our
own team or his own, team SHOULD i, say, uh
stand up for. It but what's sad is that they'd
(01:11:01):
have to do that when they're trying to compete and
you're a female and you play third base and you
are playing, great and you're, great and you're a, female
and all your teammates and have to, say, well we're
not going to run out there if we have a.
Transition And i'm sure the person's a good, person a
nice person that had had nothing to do with. It
the problem is it's a male playing female. Sports so you're.
(01:11:25):
Right it's almost like the teammates on the transgender's team
have to step. Up Yet i'm sure they're friends and
the rest of, it and we can probably guarantee that
there are women on that softball team that don't approve
of it. Yet and you know what's. Crazy they're going
to win if they win the, ring if they win
the state champions with the, trophy or even with, this
(01:11:48):
they don't get the credit they deserve for being great
women's players because a man went out and dominated a
bunch of other, women and it's. Wrong you're, right and
there are plenty that speak up for. It we know
that they're out, there but at what point in time
do you say this isn't, fair and it diminishes and
takes away from what these women are doing that are so,
(01:12:09):
great good, softball, basketball for whatever it, is great. Players
they deserve to compete against somebody on their. Level it's
unfair on the team because it's going to diminish the
team who, won the women that are playing well because
a male was. Pitching and it obviously isn't fair to
those who got Dominated Rogers High school who had to
(01:12:35):
go up and face the same person twice and get
beat seven straight innings in both games because the person
pitched fourteen innings of both games in seven in. Each so,
yeah you're exactly right in the strength and, numbers but
only win their own teammates stand up for it when
it's going to. Stop women should be competing against women
at every level of. Sports men should be competing against,
(01:12:57):
men and if there's a transition, league, okay that's, fine
but women shouldn't have to do that because it's obvious it.
Was it's it's. Unfair it was it was one. Sided
they had no, shot and it's it's a bummer for
those women who deserve. This they fought so, hard whether
it's to get a scholarship or to win a state.
Champion so either, way they're not going to get the
(01:13:18):
credit they deserve because a male pitched against a team
full of. Females it's pretty much that. Simple AND i
don't think it's right AND i never.
Speaker 13 (01:13:26):
Will i'm one hundred percent with, You. Sean, Well, hey,
guys this is my first TIME i ever calling the,
mare first time on the, radio BUT i listen to
you guys all the. TIME i appreciate what you. DO
i appreciate the passion you guys bring to the.
Speaker 1 (01:13:39):
Sports hey appreciate the yeah and, men thank, You, ma,
man we appreciate good, Welcome welcome to The caller. World,
man great to have you. IN a great point on the.
Question and it's a slippery slope for those those gals
who have to deal with it every. Day you, know
you got a, friend but it's a, friend it's a.
Male it's just the bottom line is women should be
competing inst women at every. Level it's only. Fair they deserve,
(01:14:02):
it and it's. Right it's. Not BUT i can tell
you what's going to happen when there's three transgender biological
males playing on the same team against a group of
women in, basketball track and, field softball whatever it. Is then, what,
oh well that's way too. Many, yeah it's one too.
Many women deserve the right to compete against. Women they
fought too hard not to have that. Opportunity it's.
Speaker 7 (01:14:24):
Wrong, well and a couple of, Things, SEAN i mean
that really center around this is such a politically charged.
Speaker 5 (01:14:30):
Topic but is, It?
Speaker 1 (01:14:32):
Dan but what's political about?
Speaker 7 (01:14:33):
It it's become that way is the better.
Speaker 1 (01:14:37):
Way to see, it because society. Sucks but the truth
is it's a male that's. Dominating there wasn't good enough
to beat the. Male so in, baseball so you got
to go play against. Females not. Fair women deserve, more
they deserve, Better so go ahead what you're gonna.
Speaker 7 (01:14:49):
Say, SO i mean it's you, know With thomas's point
about the girls on the, team think about when you were, sixteen,
seventeen eighteen years, old what do your parents always tell, You,
hey listen to the, coach but the, coach, no listen
to your, Coach like that's from their perspective, there so
don't rock the. Boat and the same goes for the coaches,
too the political aspect of. This they're probably, told, hey,
(01:15:10):
no you cannot go away from. This you have to
keep you have to keep them on the, team like
you have to do this or. Else so think about
it from the coaches. Perspective you're already MAKING i don't
know what seventy thousand a year with coaching and, Teaching
so you lose that, job you have to move the,
family do all these other types of. Things it's just
kind of taking all of the other aspects of this
(01:15:32):
and does it align with your priorities and do you
just kind of take the loss and move on from
that perspective even if you disagree.
Speaker 1 (01:15:38):
AND i look at it, DIFFERENT i think it's bigger
than that for ME i. Did if you're, good you'll
you'll find and if you stand on, principle your job you.
Make you've got to make some tough decisions for these.
Kids if you really are about the, women then you've
got to stand up and risk losing your. Gig if
you're about taking care of the these girls deserve to
(01:16:00):
play women versus, women then you have to stand. Up
it can't just be, well you know, what, MAN i
don't want to be a loud voice at a. Time
the transfer. Portal people transfer when they get a, hangnail
And i'm worried about having to go go to another,
school or If i'm the coach of the women's softball,
TEAM i personally wouldn't allow the person to play on my.
TEAM i just. Wouldn't and if the administration or the suit,
(01:16:23):
said well we allow it, here Then i'd have to
go find a new coaching job in a different district
or their teaching, job or it's never going to. Change
if it's, well let's just accept it Because i'm afraid
of my job being, lost Or i'm afraid that IF
i say, something my coach will be mad at me
and bench. Me AND i understand it's seventeen years. Old
you're fragile, AGE i get. It but we're at a
(01:16:44):
time now when seventeen year olds are smarter than the
adults in the. Room so at some point in time
you want to change, it you've got to be willing
to take the risk of what will happen if you
try to change. It women do not belong In men
do not belong in women's. Sports that's not saying they
don't belong in their own league or men against, what
or that's not the. Point it's. Simple men do not
(01:17:08):
belong playing women's sports at any level in the seventh
grade and the tenth grade in college in pro, period
they do not. Belong it should be. Unacceptable and if
your job's at risk because you don't like it and
you don't want to coach, it and you don't think
it's fair to the girls that have fought their ass
off for a scholarship to go in the starting pitching,
job then guess. What then you really aren't all In
(01:17:32):
and don't talk to me about not, you but don't
talk to me about. Principles if you accept something you,
SAY i know it's not, right but, MAN i got
to protect what's. Mine, well if you're good, enough what's
yours will find. You and if you want to stand on,
business standing on business is women competing against, women not.
Men wrong idea wrong, deal and it can't be good
(01:17:53):
for one sport but not for the. Other, no you
got to be if you're going to do, it you
got to be all in on. It And i'm all
in On, YES i would be willing to give up
my job and. Career if you told me THAT i
had to do something that was against SOMETHING i believed,
In i'm willing to give it. Up AND i would
be willing to give up my career if somebody, said, Well,
sean if you don't stop saying men don't belong in women's,
(01:18:13):
sports we're going to have to replace, you then you,
better you better get to replace. Him Whether i'm a,
coach whether it doesn't, matter it does not. MATTER i could.
Care whether it's this, shot, Well, sean we're not, Tough we're.
Not it's a. Subject it's sports. Related so IF i have, to,
YES i absolutely believe that women should be able to
compete against, women AND i don't have to be tolerant
(01:18:35):
the other. Way men don't belong playing against women in.
Sports they just.
Speaker 7 (01:18:38):
Don't, well Does Pete rose belong in? Baseball after the
recent decision By Rob manfred will let you decide after
you hear from. Him that's coming up right. Here it
is A Sean salisbury, Show Sports, talk seven.
Speaker 3 (01:18:50):
Ninety Sean salisbury continues on seven Ninety.
Speaker 7 (01:18:56):
SEAN i got a lot of people involved in the.
CONVERSATION i guess it was about a couple of weeks.
Ago trying to remember now exactly When Pete rose, Shootless Joe,
jackson other dead people that were put on the Permanently
ineligible list In baseball were, reinstated but we had yet
to hear on the record From Commissioner Rob, manford the
man who made that.
Speaker 5 (01:19:14):
Decision, well yesterday we got that.
Speaker 7 (01:19:16):
Chance he was ON cbs this morning talking about the
new professional softball league That Major League baseball is supporting.
Financially so he was asked that at the end of the,
conversation primarily About Pete, rose and he said he kind
of felt like he owed it to him to reinstate.
Speaker 10 (01:19:33):
Him it's a difficult decision because people are passionate about
issues like.
Speaker 1 (01:19:41):
This because some people say broke the.
Speaker 10 (01:19:43):
Rules, yeah and he should stay forever, again you, KNOW
i think when you have kind of come up the
side of the business THAT i came, up living up
to your agreements is a really important. Thing and this
was overdue in my.
Speaker 7 (01:19:57):
View and he had a longer response before, that where
he went through many different things of talking about a
that it was a settlement that was agreed upon With
rose In Major League, baseball but he was never ineligible
for The hall Of. Fame same deal With Shoeless Joe.
Jackson and now obviously after his death felt, like, WELL i,
(01:20:18):
mean it was a lifetime ban he's no longer.
Speaker 1 (01:20:21):
Alive it's exactly. RIGHT i mean a lifetime ban means,
lifetime and then once he's passed. Away the sad thing,
is and the emotional part of it is that would
it have been a bad thing to allow him to
(01:20:41):
actually and, listen this doesn't guarantee he's going to The
hall Of. Fame there's bitter voters that are not going
to vote for. Him you do know, this, Right i've seen.
Comments i've seen comments from some of. Them they're not
going to vote for. Him there are some that will
not vote for him because they just broke through even
though the rule, says and he was banned from, baseball
(01:21:04):
not banned from The hall Of. Fame hall Of fame
does their own The baseball. Doesn't baseball doesn't decide The
hall Of. Fame The hall Of fame, does and the.
Voters the crazy thing about it is is he passed,
away so it's his. Lifetime so now he becomes eligible
to be. Reinstated but you still have to go through
these guys that are gonna, Say, nope he gambled on.
Baseball that's the. Rule you can't, break and dead or,
(01:21:28):
alive he's not getting in even though we know he belongs,
Him AND i would say that over the test. Time
put it this, way people who kill people are on
the streets faster Than Pete rose was. Reinstated so And
i'm not making an excuse he did, wrong all the
stuff we've talked. About you, know If pete was arrogant about,
it he's a friend of. Mine so MAYBE i personally
(01:21:50):
and was a friend of mine and had great times
with him, emotional and MAYBE i side on the fact
That i'm just looking at the baseball. Numbers he should
be in and he served this. Time hopefully he GETS
i would hope That baseball does it. Right but there's
still a lot of people that are bitter at, it
that are not going to let him. In but, yes
it was a rule and a blatant, one and he broke.
IT i get. It but at some point in, time,
(01:22:12):
again it's a shrine and it is a museum for
fans and for guys to compliment their. Career He rose
belongs in there with a story to be told on a,
plaque and hopefully the voters will see it that. Way
but there will be some, that no matter, what will
not vote for. Him but it's an awfully self righteous
situation of being that when Major League baseball is finally
(01:22:34):
FOR i don't know if forgiving is, right but, Said,
okay he's, done he served his lifetime, ban and now
in death you can put him in The hall Of.
Fame yet some still, won't and they, will and they
will wear that. Proudly he rose belongs to The hall Of.
Speaker 7 (01:22:49):
Fame, yeah you're not going to get any arguments for
me on, that but you are one hundred percent right
about the you, know holier than now self important gatekeepers
that are out there that are going to tell you
that it is is their civic. Duty like you ever
notice when people tell say that it is their quote
civic duty that you're just kind of like you've got
a high opinion of, yourself don't. You like nobody asked
(01:23:10):
you to put on the cape and save the day, here.
Speaker 1 (01:23:12):
Dude, yeah your civic duty is when they tell you
to go to jury. Duty, okay even THEN i try
to duck. That, Dan he's, like, oh, MAN i was
not feeling well. Today OH i know too much about
what's going on with. This, yeah but you get my.
Point civic? Duty, yeah as if, Man i'm the most
important person on the planet civic. Duty, well if that's the,
case then we're all supposed to run for office, then, right, True,
(01:23:34):
YEAH i have a, vote you know What i'm. Saying
if it's percific, duty we want to change the, world
so maybe we should all be in a political point
so we can be in that, room sitting at that
conference room table right to impact the. Vote but when
it comes to, this the self, righteous they've never done anything,
wrong served, it will will do everything they can to
keep For Pete rose. Up hopefully enough of them will
get him. IN i think THAT i think that there
(01:23:57):
comes a point you may never, forget or you may
never forgive or, forget but there comes a point in
time when it says lifetime ban that band's. Off did
he do on the baseball field what is required to
get in The hall of, fame and that's in major
numbers he. Did i'm pre served to say his time
he rose belongs to the hall of. Fame now his
(01:24:18):
life sentence is.
Speaker 7 (01:24:19):
Up well to your point about people running for, OFFICE
a saying that a buddy of mine once had is
net ringing in my years right now of we don't
send our, best AND i think we see that on
a daily, basis so.
Speaker 1 (01:24:31):
You, think no question about.
Speaker 7 (01:24:33):
It, well one of the best is the astros. Best

Speaker 7 (01:29:23):
Didn't wasn't there a meme that was out there that,
said if you were born in nineteen, eighty you're closer
to nineteen forty two than you are to twenty twenty.
Speaker 5 (01:29:31):
FIVE i THINK i got that.
Speaker 7 (01:29:32):
Right i'm sure somebody On twitter will share, it but,

now we're almost at the age Where George jetson's going
to go to. Kindergarten that's.
Speaker 7 (01:30:35):
Scary, well and with what you were bringing up about
the theme song of the, show you, know the background
singers everybody like. That yesterday on The Matt Thomas, show
their rejoins were POPULAR tv show theme Songs hawaii, Five,
Oh jefferson's all of, Those AND i mean it just
gets you to think that shows don't have theme songs.
Anymore like that was as much a part of the
(01:30:58):
show as the actual show. Was is the theme song
to the. Show as soon as that came, on you were,
like next thirty, MINUTES i ain't moving.

the time he was twenty until he was seventy. Five
it was exact the, look you. Know and SOMETIMES i
looked At Ave fragoda AND i, said why the long?
Face see WHAT i did? There but, great you're exactly.
(01:38:33):
Right and think about That Barney Miller. Godfather, yeah he

five looked like he was sixty.
Speaker 1 (01:38:47):
Five do not Hate Craig Stadler walrus Meaning Wilford. Brimley,
okay if you're ever going to put respect On, cocoon
it's time For Wilford. Brimley, okay you know, What he's
always the. GUY i remember that guy in the. Show
he's always the. Other also in the Firm Jess ackman
(01:39:09):
And Tom. Cruise he was the heavy and yeah he
damn right he, was and a phenomenal. Mustache you're speaking
of the. Heavy that thing was thick and. Right brimley,
Legend Wolford. Brimley we can do this. Forever right, now
there's a twenty five year old, saying who the hell
Is Wilford. Brimley, yeah he was your utility. Infielder he really.
(01:39:32):
Was he's he was Your he could do it. All
brimley was never really the, lead but he was always
there and. Relevant so there you. Go good. Stuff mands
a great.
Speaker 7 (01:39:43):
CALL i took a film studies class in college and
we had watched whatever the NETWORK i think it is
Called network the.
Speaker 1 (01:39:50):
Movie But robert is That fonda And? Redford, right it Was.
Speaker 7 (01:39:56):
DUVAL i want to say it was the guy you,
know mad as, hell And i'm not going to take it.
Speaker 1 (01:39:59):
Anymore, oh that's right. There it was Because redford was
in another media. Movie that's What i'm talking. ABOUT i
can't remember what it, was, Right.
Speaker 7 (01:40:06):
Yeah but the point that my professor in that class
brought up, was you, know you can always count on
every single one Of duval's Movies he's going to end
up yelling at some.
Speaker 5 (01:40:15):
Point and it's so, true even in days of thunder
hit the pace.
Speaker 1 (01:40:20):
Car You Bobby, Deval, yeah my, way your. Way. YEAH
i Love Bob. Devall it's. GREAT i do Love Bobby.
DEVALL i certain guys JUST i, mean and he could
play any role as. Well my first film STUDY i,
HAD i took a class as, well film studies. Class
we'd have to you. Know it was one of those.
(01:40:41):
Electives BUT i loved, it and AT sc it was
pretty relevant because of all the you, know the film
school and. Stuff so took a class and the very
first one we had to ride on Was, casablanca AND
i mean that was the first. One i'm, thinking, well
AM i gonna like, this AND i fell in love
at that time with old school black and. Whites at
that time was that old school, Right but to this
(01:41:02):
DAY i still AND i have a collection of old
black and white movies like, well you, know DVDs and
the old school, tapes a bunch of them BECAUSE i
fell in love with. Him and it started with. THAT i,
MEAN i watched him because my mother was you, know
and my mother loved the old school. Movies but from then,
on and you, know the wizard of all of, them
AND i became a fanatic of the old, school The
(01:41:25):
Gregory pecks of the, world and you know it was
but That casablanca was the very first kind of my
introduction to writing about. It and from then ON i,
preach you, know old school, movies anybody get a chance
of you're just sitting around on your, board go watching
old black and white and, say, well it's not the,
same but if you look at the, theme there's some pretty,
good real good acting back in the, day, man real good.
Speaker 7 (01:41:47):
Classic and back To Wilford, brimley remember he was the
Manager Pop fisher in The Natal Roy. Hobbs you were
the best Hitter i've ever.
Speaker 1 (01:41:55):
Seen, yep he sure was he. Was he was exactly
he was part of and LIKE i, Said brimley was
the other guy in about eight million, movies no.
Speaker 7 (01:42:03):
Doubt and then you, Know god rest his. Soul Joe Don,
baker who just passed away recently At texas.
Speaker 1 (01:42:08):
The last couple of, months, right it was like last
week and, yeah, yeah it would say it's been it's been,
recent that's for.
Speaker 7 (01:42:15):
Sure so because of him the Movie Golden, eye every
TIME i would Hear Jimbo fisher's, NAME i would always
hear him To Pierce brosn And James Bond. Jimbo and
then of course you know In, Fletch, Oh Tommy, lisorda, huh,
yeah that's. RIGHT i hate tommysorta.
Speaker 1 (01:42:32):
Great ending in the Movie fletch.
Speaker 7 (01:42:34):
Too, there, right absolutely, Absolutely ERWIN. R, fletcher he always
gets his, man all. Right we were talking leading up
To Mike leech and getting his flowers the right, time Because,
SEAN i think you're going to absolutely agree with the
point That i'll lay out for. Him we'll do that
here as we pay homage to the pirates getting his
due yesterday right Here Sports talk seven Ninety.
Speaker 5 (01:42:57):
The Sean Salisbury show, CONTINUED.
Speaker 7 (01:43:02):
I feel, about you, know The Pro Football hall Of,
fame the college Football hall Of. Fame we were talking
Earlier Pete Rose Baseball hall Of, fame and there was
a requirements out there for win percentage that was keeping
One Mike leach out of making it into Said hall Of.
Fame but now yesterday a rule passed that took the
(01:43:23):
career win percentage to make you eligible to make Said
hall Of fame from a six hundred percentage down to
five ninety, five thus allowing for The pirates to eventually
get his honor well.
Speaker 1 (01:43:37):
Deserved and it's a no. Brainer this isn't even a.
Question and Had Mike leach not prematurely passed, away he'd
have blown by that, anyway, Right AND i want you
to tell me in. Truth first of, all is impact
with how mummy and the. Offense here's a guy And
mike and my brother. Were they'd spend two or three
(01:43:58):
nights a week at three thirty in the morning talking
And mike became one of my best. Friends AND i
am the only REASON i share this is THAT i
was a Camp. DAN i don't know If i've shared
this with, you but the summer before he passed, Away
mike is his football camp for people around the country
to come right A Mississippi state and he, said come,
on come see me for a couple of. Days AND i, said,
Okay AND i wasn't going to do. It you, know
(01:44:21):
you get TO i gotta fly in and drive to you, Know.
STARKVILLE i don't want. To But mike's been in my golf.
Tournament he and my brother went to school together and
they've known each other for. Years And mike AND i
have talked a lot of life and. Football AND i didn't,
Like i'll Catch mike another, time BUT i, said, now
you know this is important AND i want to go see.
HIM i love. Him and five months and we had
(01:44:44):
an unbelievable Typical mike. Dude we go into his office
and we're talking about. Stories his memory like from my
golf to everything is just so, precise. Right And mike
is one of those guys at seven in the, morning
if you try to get ahold of, him you'll never
get a hold of. Him or at five and a
half and you Call mike at three thirty in the,
morning this is true. Story now you would have got.
It he'll pick up the. Phone and so we would,
(01:45:06):
laugh and we spend hours laughing in his office and
talking with his family and And, mike and we start
talking football and old school and my brother and the
rest of. It and THEN i get the message a
handful of months, later you know what happened To. Mike
and you, know my brother AND i had talked and
we thought he was going to make it and he. Didn't.
(01:45:27):
Uh you, know he obviously knows the wife very. Well
BUT i think back and what WOULD I how WOULD
i have felt HAD i not gone and spent that
time a couple those hours With. Mike And i'm GLAD
i did because it just validated what he. Is great,
coach great. Human we need More Mike leaches than. Sports
we just do. Now he's. Unique SO i don't know
if we're going to get many, more but it's All
(01:45:49):
i'll tell you What lane's taking on some of his,
stuff right L, lane, Kid Lane kiffin is is taking
some Of Mike leach's stuff and play, hey and he
has not just. Football i'm talking about just personality, wise
not afraid to speak up On and When mike, talked
everybody wanted here because you, knew you knew something unique
was coming out Of mike's, mouth AND i love the.
(01:46:10):
Guy like. Family he was literally. Family my brother and
him were as tight as could, be And mike And
ivy came. Close we just talked. Anything the only Guy
i've ever met that could Talk Winston churchill out of
one side of his brain and x'es and o's out
of the other at the same time at the same. Time,
hell he'd Have Winston churchill drop him back in the
pocket throwing. It SO i love, HIM i miss. Him
this is right because he would have got. In you
(01:46:32):
can make exceptions for some AND i don't know any
coach or anybody that Knows mike that would argue with.
This anybody that's making a big deal out he. Doesn't, Y,
hey he. Does you think where he went To Texas.
Tech they've had a program with dykes in the, past
But mike went there and had them and had them
in playoff opportunity.
Speaker 5 (01:46:50):
Contention, oh if there was a, playoff bide.
Speaker 1 (01:46:52):
It, yes that's exactly. Right mike goes To Washington, state
they're a. Threat every. Year mike goes To mississippi's they
they're a. Threat imagine at some point If mike has
the recruiting opportunity at ut At TEXAS a and m one,
Time mike told me years, ago and he didn't mean it,
arrogant because, Well mike had a personality and he knew
(01:47:14):
he was good at what he. Did But mike was
just it was never. Arrogant it was just like it
was kind of just a matter of, fact he, Said,
sean AND i years, ago he, Said, sean IF i
ever had THE sec you know THAT sec town meaning
the top TIER, lsu if he could ever coach, guy
you know What i'm. Saying AND i don't want to
say second to your, Town But Mississippi state's Not. Alabama
(01:47:34):
does that make Sense Washington state didn't get the same players. One,
yeah nobody's going to argue with you on that right right.
Now it doesn't mean they're not good. Programs it's just
it was just a tear down on recruiting and money and.
Facilities he, said IF i ever had one of, those
he'd win a national. Title AND i believe. Him i'm
not sure of coaches that there's a lot of impactful,
(01:47:56):
coaches you, know to, Saying i'm not talking about the best,
ever But i'm talking about somebody who did more with
less it always turned the programs. Around, now they never
won a national, title and sometimes it'd. Fluctuate But mike
the second you want to talk about the greatest quick fixed,
guy meaning you go from bad to good, immediately and
nobody wanted to play against him because you. Knew Hell
mike could go for it on fourth down twenty seven.
(01:48:17):
TIMES i, mean he didn't, care but he and he
beat through his own. Drum and he wasn't a shake
hands and kiss, baby go to functions type of. Guy
mike loved x'es and o's loved the, design had a
play sheet that could fit in the palm of your.
Hand and look at all the guys he's touched a long,
Way Lincoln, Riley Dana, Holgerson Cliff. KINGSBURY i mean you
(01:48:38):
can go on and on and on with guys that
were in that are part of that tree And mike
and all of them love, him friggin love, him and
why wouldn't? THEY i Love mike. Too this is, right
and it's going to be great Because Mike leach will
be A hall Of famer and should. BE i just
you know, what one of the greatest times of our
life would have Been dan being able to hear his,
(01:48:58):
speech being able to hear what he had to say
the day he, was you, know put in The hall of,
fame because if you talked weddings or, cookies it didn't.
Matter Mike leach could turn it into a two hour
movie and if you in. It Mike leach was the
closest thing To Bill WALTON i ever who's ever around
on an. Interview mike would come on the show And
(01:49:20):
i've HAD i COULD i Asked Bill walton one question
ONCE i could have gone to the, restroom brushed my
teeth and come, back And bill would have been on that. Question,
Now Sean, salisbury, right And Mike leach same way you
Asked michael. QUESTION i asked him one, time who's the?
Best take yourself out of, it who's the Best if
you were going to hire a, coach who would it
be for your? Program and he. Pontificated there was, silence
(01:49:43):
and he went through it and he, thought and he,
said you, KNOW i think the best COACHES i may
have ever been around along the way may have been
high school. Guys and then he went on to explain
why eight minute, answer but every part of it was makes, sense,
Okay and that Was. Mike miss. Him we need more of.
Him we got some guys that have some of it in.
Him but saturdays are better When Mike leach was. Alive,
(01:50:06):
well and still we're press conferences and he belongs to
The hall Of. Fame And i'm glad they did.
Speaker 7 (01:50:10):
This, yeah And i'll get to the accomplishments here in
just a. Second but you know What i'm happiest about
with you, know the life and times With, mike and
is that people were able to see through the farce
that was him getting fired At Texas.
Speaker 1 (01:50:23):
Tech oh, good, gracious what a. Joke but you think
they'd like to well they're good, now Don't, missentia but
up until you think they would have liked to have
him back for a bunch of, years an absolute. Joke
mike a good, man good human, being good football coach
and a difference. Maker AND i don't care if you
think it's. Football And mike was a difference maker and
he loved. IT i don't know anybody that loved it
(01:50:46):
like he just loved the talk xes and Those he
always he was always looking for. Something i've Known mike.
Forever we joked, this and when are you going to
make me your quarterback, coach you, know and he'd, say,
well let's. Talk you know, What mike never he never
wants anybody around. Him quarter you know who coached his
quarterbacks every, level every, year everywhere he went him now,
him go go talk to guys that you know the
(01:51:07):
coach now that played for. Him then they they you
know the guys That. Mike they got to throw the
ball a, plus he's a. Quarterback quarterback love coaches like.
That you get to throw it eight million, times, Right
but anybody who's ever been with, him they'll they'll tell.
You and the meetings just talking To mike and going through.
It mike loved. Them but he was always looking and
when he got, SOMETHING i was, like, okay we got,
this and he would lean on that in the. Game,
(01:51:28):
unconventional but he was unconventional thirty, years twenty, years like
How mummy was long before we used to use it for.
All that's an unconventional way to do. It all the
stuff you see, now all this spread. Stuff mike told
me years. Ago he, GOESE i don't know why they're
resisting this college game in THE. Nfl he, Goes New
england does it all the time in the gun With Tom.
Brady we walked through it and he, said it's just
(01:51:50):
different bodies in the way it's designed or. Called he,
goes but we're it's no longer college stealing from THE.
Nfl THE nfl is using what we're. Doing and he's. Right,
now look at THE. Nflu If i'd have told you
fifteen years ago that the quarterbacks we were going after
a guys who ran the ball just as effectively as
they threw, it you'd have laughed at. Me you'd. LAUGHED
(01:52:10):
i think How Steve young would be in this offense
In Randall cunningham in these, days And Mike leach and
That tree and those guys and that type, system the spread.
Offense you know that type.
Speaker 3 (01:52:23):
Is.
Speaker 1 (01:52:23):
Now it's littered all over sports football from junior high
all the way up through THE. Nfl And mike's group
of people like him in that, group And mike at
the beginning Of mike never played down a football rugby,
guy law school guy At, pepperdine that's, who and just love.
Football how about that guy's gonna end up in The
(01:52:44):
hall Of fame and probably couldn't take a snap under,
center but he didn't care how to do it and
it didn't. Matter he was going to make sure that
he understood. Football but a, brilliant brilliant guy and one
of the great sense of. Humors i'm not telling anybody
anything they don't know of all, time and a huge,
heart even though you may not have seen it. Much
mike was a very protective, guy but one that belongs
(01:53:04):
to The hall Of. Fame and this is a good
thing because The pirate deserves. It and if you want
the best quote, ever the best, Story Mike leach is
a guy you want in the, room no.
Speaker 7 (01:53:12):
Doubt, well and you just laid out some of the
accomplishments THAT i was going to point to BECAUSE i, Mean,
sean when the spread offense started to take Over texas
high school football was WHEN i was in high school
the early two, thousands because this state was known for
its running game and the the the running backs that it.
Produced in, HELL i mean it was you assume that
(01:53:33):
you basically Blaspheme god in, church then throw the football
in a football. Game it was this state Was, yeah
it was wing. Tea it was as you, know triple
option and you're, yeah you start wishbone right, Right you're
throwing the football like, this what's what's this pansy? Football
you guys are playing throwing the football over the. Place,
(01:53:53):
now look at high, school look at, college look at THE.
Nfl Mike, leach.
Speaker 1 (01:53:58):
Damn think about it too that you, know they more
than anything used the passing game as an extension of the,
run which we do. Now you, know throwing the, screen the,
bubble the, quick the, shallow, cross the, mesh all those,
things mixing in play action and doing all that and
you know progression reads and all. That but also you
think about the way THAT i, mean the teams started to.
(01:54:22):
GO nfl teams started to clinic off. Him think about
when IF i told, you oh, you WHEN i was growing,
up oh you, football you know from The greg Jack
mildron's And Greg pruetz and they go all the way through.
That Keith, JACKSON i think the tight end At, oklahoma
and that's not that long. Ago Keith jackson didn't hear
he like twenty eight catches or thirty catches his last
(01:54:43):
year In, oklahoma and that was a. Lot it's a tight.
End we don't want to throw the ball At. Oklahoma
Then Sam bradford came along and they spread out people
now that are in high. School they think That, oklahoma
you're In, texas that they grew up throwing it all
over the. Lot now they all want to run. It
but guess what they now it's people think that you
grew up. That oh they've been throwing the ball At
oklahoma for fifty. Years no they. Haven't, Well Barry switzer was.
(01:55:05):
There they throw it eight, times they run the, wishbone
give it To Marcus dupreet and, boom they'd go At. Nebraska, now,
hell thirty five times ain't in. Us but, yes and
they're directly responsible for that, transformation that offense and what
it's done to the way that they run the folk
football became running the ball became. Secondary although it's. Important
(01:55:27):
the way they implement it was using the passing game
as an extension of the, run and they executed it to,
perfection no doubt about.
Speaker 7 (01:55:34):
It Mike leach will be eligible for induction in the
twenty twenty seven.
Speaker 5 (01:55:38):
Class he'll get. In, Yeah i'm fully confident in.
Speaker 7 (01:55:42):
That we talked about people feeling at self importance. Earlier,
well one person out there might now be on the
pay no mind, list and it's a little. Painful we'll discuss.
That here it Is Sewn Salisbury, Show Sports talk seven
to ninety.
Speaker 3 (01:55:58):
Back to The Sean Souths show On Supports talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (01:56:03):
Sport your, astros your, rockets your voice.
Speaker 5 (01:56:10):
With us talking About Mike.
Speaker 7 (01:56:12):
Leach can you imagine with you, know obviously The Joe Rogan,
show all the weird things he likes to, talk their conspiracy, theories, aliens,
Everything leech would have been on The Joe Rogan show
at some.
Speaker 1 (01:56:22):
POINT i have to believe at my, FRIEND i guarantee
The rogan would have wanted him on, there And leach
would have Been it would have had to be a
four hour. Interview oh, yeah it would have take Because
mike wouldn't Have mike would have pontificated about a lot
of it and uh and would have been. Great And
rogan would have been. There confused at times like all of.
(01:56:45):
Us oh, yeah but but love it every second of.
It thinking put it this, way you rarely came out
of a conversation With Mike leach either one or two,
things well, three confused at. Times but were you like, this,
DUDE i love him that you learned something or you
came out of it with man. Alive this guy's a deep.
(01:57:08):
Thinker all those things would have MADE i, mean he
he touched them. All and, YEAH i would imagine That
Joe rogan would have been a matter of, fact he.
Was you know how we used to say how many
times somebody been On carson or the cover Of Sports.
Illustrated it feels Like rogan would have, said you, Know
Mike leach is going to be a reoccurring, guest like
he's been On rogan eight times type of, right, right
(01:57:28):
like the regular. Occurrence Because, mike if you would have
gone on there and you would have never talked to
one ounce of football With Mike, leach it wouldn't have.
Mattered the conversation still would have been four. Hours so, yeah,
man there must be having a good time In. HEAVEN
i know my mom and dad are over there having
some laughs with. Him But mike was brilliant in so
(01:57:48):
many different.
Speaker 7 (01:57:49):
Ways, ABSOLUTELY i mean he probably would have been telling a,
story you, Know. JOE i was once driving Through New
mexico and see this beam a light up in the
sky and you, know got a little close sort of
turned green than. Red so now he was one of
the best for, sure all. Right John John cougar. Mellencamp
i'm sure you probably saw this, Yesterday. Sean this goes
(01:58:10):
back To game four earlier this week in The Eastern
Conference finals In. Indianapolis, here in one of the, timeouts
the people with The pacers Handed pat, McAfee a proud
resident Of, indianapolis course former, colts and of course we
know Who pat McFee. Is even more now the, microphone
the fire up the, crowd and he calls Out Ben,
(01:58:31):
Stiller Timothy, Shallow, May Spike lee and saying let's send
these sons of bitches back To New york with their
ears ringing from how loud you are and other. Things
then he gave a little shove To Rick carlisle as
he was walking back to the. Bench, Well Ben stiller
has responded and he gave his thoughts on. It how
About John cougar mellencamp who posted this state right, right
(01:58:56):
and he posted this with a graphic yesterday of him
in the. Background you can clearly see that he is
at The pacers. Game Nicks pacers games have been very
entertaining for anyone who likes basketball or. SPORTS i Attended
game four In indianapolis and Quotes Hoosier HOSPITALITY i was
embarrassed when, somebody under whose DIRECTION i don't, know called
(01:59:18):
out some of the people who had made the trip
From New york to support their team and in turn
support our. Team the audience booed these. People i'd say
that was Not hoosier. Hospitality one could only say it's,
poor poor. SPORTSMANSHIP i was not proud to be A,
hoosier And i've lived here in my entire life on
behalf of Most. HOOSIERS i would like to apologize for
(01:59:40):
our poor. Behavior i'm sure The pacers had nothing to
do with this. SmackDown.
Speaker 1 (01:59:46):
Dude, listen first of, all gamesmanship and. Fun do we
really think did anybody take McAfee that serious that he
doesn't Like Spike? Lee it was that's what we. Do
remember When elway he, said let's get ready To. Matumbo
when you have the, mic let's get ready to. MATUMBO i,
mean that's what you do in, arenas. Right that's why
(02:00:07):
we have people say let's send these guys. Back it's
tongue in, cheek it's, passion it's, fanatic it's. Sports, well
you're not allowed to. NOW i understand calling people dirty
and that PART i, Get but booing or doing it
at a good fun and passion Because, Spike, spike they'll
do it In New. YORK i didn't Understand mellencamp's, approach
(02:00:31):
or we call Him mellencamp or. Cougar what is he?
NOW i understand he's home. State you would always lean
on the side OF i would think as long as
it wasn't a humiliating or embarrassing when you lean on
the side of protecting your home, people aren't they your
favorites in your HOME i just didn't. Understand did you
find anything it was offensive and rude or wrong about
(02:00:54):
McAfee or anybody that had a little bit of fun
at the expense Of knicks, fans just like they'll do
when you go. There, Well i'm trying to figure out
where this was coming. From talk about a self righteous
approach And i'm so, important and how dare? You he
should know? Better but he has BEEN i don't know
(02:01:15):
what's happened to, Him AND i loved. Him i've been
to his At Market Square. ARENA i went to his
concert in his town and it was. Phenomenal i've told
the story before he AND i WERE i was throwing
routes To John mellencamp at The maui the why leya
hotel The Four seasons Why lea on the grass next
(02:01:36):
to the, pool him and his. Kids John Cougar mellencamp
AND i were playing football catch, SO i, mean we're
out there AND i didn't even realize he was the
same hotel AS i was, like oh, man cool family is.
There That's. John That's John Cougar. Mellencamp he's over there
with His the next thing you, know him AND i are.
TALKING i want to talk to, music he's talking. Sports
i'm throwing in post. Routes, Okay i've Had i've had
(02:01:57):
the lucky fortune That i've. Been i've thrown it to
a boy, band To John cougar mellencampon and To William. Shatner,
okay on the beach In Santa. Monica point is the
REASON i loved, Him And i'm, thinking when did he
go so? BITTER i mean WHAT i MEAN i can
still throw routes toom and love that and still looking
at him like. Job WHAT i mean this is we're talking.
Playoffs we're talking, Intense we're talking. Fun, hell we need
(02:02:19):
more of that in THE. Nba we need. MORE i
mean when it comes to fans GETTING i mean loving
it and getting. Involved there was nothing derogatory about, it
was gamesmanship and. FUN i just thought it was kind
of weak and it didn't like he was protecting his home.
State you live In, indiana, dude that's where you're, from
and probably not a wise move to basically kick your
(02:02:40):
own home crowd and your own people into the. TEETH
i thought it was his comment was misplaced and quite
frankly irrelevant to be honest with.
Speaker 7 (02:02:48):
YOU i mean it's also to consider the. SOURCE i,
mean McAfee is a guy that he's a, showman that's
what he. Is sure he's he has made his bones doing,
that either in the podcast world OR i mean part OF.
Speaker 1 (02:03:00):
Wwe so what ye who he?
Speaker 2 (02:03:05):
Is it's.
Speaker 1 (02:03:05):
Fun what's a big? Deal there isn't a big.
Speaker 7 (02:03:08):
Deal AND i didn't necessarily hear nick, fans you, know
going out of their way to apologize for those morons
who are out in the street throwing literal bags of
trash at people who are wearing or at least one
guy that was wearing A pacers.
Speaker 5 (02:03:20):
Jersey but you, know what offends some doesn't offend.
Speaker 1 (02:03:23):
All, yeah if mcpee or somebody else got up there
and it was derogatory and kids are in the you, know,
okay but, yeah send these sons of bitches. BACK i,
mean who doesn't say. THAT i, mean if it's your
team and you're behind him and you're rooting them, on
why wouldn't you have some fun with? That and is,
passionate you're at the, game you're. Going it's just you,
(02:03:43):
know the problem is sometimes these big, celebrities they have
this self importance that everything they say that we, think
we hang our hat and we got to hear everything.
SAY i would have loved it if you, said, hey,
man that was. Awesome, man we get some spirit going.
Here you're up Next New. York you, know then do.
IT i, Mean i'd rather have that than people beaten
on somebody in the parking lot after a. GAME i
(02:04:04):
JUST i DON'T i feel Like Cougar mellencamps lost his.
Speaker 7 (02:04:08):
FASTBALL i was going to, say the, gatekeepers they think
we could not do without, them but we could do without.
Them and in the case Of, john why don't you
worry about the pink, houses?
Speaker 1 (02:04:18):
Buddy, yeah, yeah a little. Diddy okay About.
Speaker 5 (02:04:21):
Jack and DIAN i was going to, Say jack And diane,
too doesn't.
Speaker 1 (02:04:24):
HE i mean it gets to a point where it's,
like WHAT i, mean isn't he also one that stands
up there with a mic at a concert and spends
fifteen minutes talking politics before he's, saying they got that point?
Speaker 6 (02:04:36):
Too?
Speaker 1 (02:04:37):
PLEASE i think he, had DON'T i think in the
past has gone his disdain For trump or somebody else
that might have been. TRY i, MEAN i got up
there and is one of those guys THAT i think
weaves politics into a. SHOW i, mean you want a
little relief when you go listen To springsteen or, anything
relief from all the, politics whether You're. Republican it's, Like
(02:04:58):
i'm not here to hear to do, that and like
kind of like when you turn on your sports show
ON tv and that's the topic of. Conversations LIKE i
were looking for a little. OUTLET i want to Hear
jack And. DIANE i want to hear that little. Diddy, okay, right,
yeah you're gonna do. Fine you paid who you, want
but this is our two hours we. Paid IF i want,
(02:05:18):
That i'll turn On i'll turn on a political. SHOW
i get his, OPINION i Guess, vick but he's not
in the. Talk but he's in the music entertainment. Business
if he was hosting a, podcast have at, it, dude
hosting a, show have at. IT i just cherished the
TIME i got to throw, him you, know throwing balls
back and. Forth BUT i JUST i think that some
(02:05:39):
people weave themselves into. Conversations quite, frankly they're even in
his home. STATE i would doubt most of those people
welcomed With. Cougar Mellon camp had to, say for.
Speaker 7 (02:05:50):
Sure astro's conversation to start to the fourth hour of the.
Show let's get back into it Because Jordan, alvarez it
seems like the return is.
Speaker 5 (02:05:58):
Eminent we'll do that. Right here Is Sean salisbury's show.
Speaker 3 (02:06:02):

As The astros back on the field tonight after taking
it on the chin last. Night thirteen to three to
The rays will be Fromber valdez going. Tonight Your Don
alvarez gonna get on the field and take some live
pitching before that game.
Speaker 5 (02:06:58):
Tonight hopefully that means he's. Come i'm back here pretty.
Speaker 7 (02:07:00):
Soon The texan's back to work here in about thirty
minutes for another day of OTAs over there at N Rg.
Park do you want to get into Yord on here
in just a, Second, Sean but something you mentioned in
the last segment has just been bugging me all throughout
the break because you, mentioned in addition to throwing passes
To John Cougar, mellencamp one of the people you mentioned
(02:07:21):
Was William. Shatner but the other one is you said
a boy, band AND i can't get it out of my.
Speaker 1 (02:07:25):
HEAD i got to know who it. WAS i guess
we'll never. Know maybe not. MUTE i mute that on
purpose so my dog doesn't bark DURING i know SOMETIMES
i forget it's Mutic. NO i, Know, trug you don't
hear the. DRAW i want to make sure that one
hundred pound bully doesn't answer that question for you. Yet what's?
Uh what's the? Uh not the one With. Timberlake that
(02:07:48):
was WHO i get the two, mixed the two main.
Speaker 7 (02:07:50):
Ones The timberlake one was in, sync and people wondering
if if a comeback is going to happen with?
Speaker 1 (02:07:57):
Them, right what's the other one that they had the?
Dart they've actually made a. Comeback they're touring right.
Speaker 5 (02:08:01):
Now Back street.
Speaker 8 (02:08:04):
Not?
Speaker 1 (02:08:04):
Backstreet what's the other?
Speaker 5 (02:08:05):
One New kids on The. Block, no ninety eight.
Speaker 1 (02:08:08):
Degrees, no it's one of. Them it's, gosh dang, It. Hotel,
no let me get. It and you'll, say, Well sean
WAS i wasn't a board band, guy but they was
at The Pro bowl and they were out there performing
and they were on the field with us after. Practice
one day before, PRACTICE i was working AT espn and
(02:08:29):
we were throwing balls and they were running rountes And i'm,
like this is pretty. COOL i really didn't know much
about them BECAUSE i wasn't a boy band. Guy let
me just Say Backstreet. Boys it's Either Backstreet boys or
in sync and in sync is which one's Non? Timberlake
That's Backstreet. Boys, okay that's Non. Timberlake. RIGHT i could
tell you with the dark haired guys That Kevin, richardson
(02:08:50):
is he the dark haired.
Speaker 5 (02:08:51):
Guy with, ye, yeah that's.
Speaker 1 (02:08:54):
It it was, Them, okay they're they're running. Routes it
Was Backstreet boys and they're they're catching football on the
field At Honolu stadium and sitting there and with throwing
them around and they're running around. Play it. Was it
was pretty. Cool SO i don't. Listen i'm not very
good at, much but one THING i do cherish is
that the people you get a chance to meet in this,
business whether it's interview or just all of a, Sudden,
(02:09:15):
wow this is really. Cool i'm throwing balls To Billy
shatner on the. Beach but, yeah it. Was it was
The Backstreet boys at The Pro, bowl and it was really.
Cool they had good. Times. Man they were really, nice
good good dudes, too really.
Speaker 7 (02:09:30):
Kind and it's also TOO i mean those, interactions it's
isn't it cool if it's the other way, Around like
they're big sports. Fans oh, man listen all the, time big.
Fan it's, like, what which is? Weird it's like what like, no, no, no,
no no no, no you're getting this all. Along i'm
the fan.
Speaker 5 (02:09:44):
Of, you not the other way.
Speaker 1 (02:09:46):
Around, well, dude that usually happens with me because EVERYBODY
i meets a bigger star THAN i. Am so it's
usually me that's, like you, KNOW i try not to be,
fanboy but there's certain people you, Meet like WHEN i
Met Stan usual right the very first time in, person
Interviewed Bob gibson about, yeah oh there's there's no doubt
And i'm more or somebody that you, know like IF
i were to Meet James, patterson the, Writer i'm like
(02:10:07):
intrigued with his books right to be like, Wow but,
yes it does happen because WHEN i at that, time
you're DOING tv and you're in their living room every
day and they may have kids or they watch, sports you,
know like you you know When Bruce willis would come
on and somebody had asked him on the like course
course like cold hard. Facts you know how they used
to do that In Sports. Center they were the cold
(02:10:29):
they were the. Questions they'd ask. Questions you're on the
hot seat and they go through like a. CELEBRITY i
think it Was bruce who, said, well his favorite was
his FAVORITE espn guy was Me and like when somebody told,
me was like this is really cool AND i don't know,
why But i'm like, no, no, no, no you guys
are kidding, me, right Because i'm. SORRY i want to
talk about you and all the stuff you do BECAUSE
i love. You and, yeah it does. Happen and it's
(02:10:52):
it's weird because you, think, Well i'm not even a
household name in my own. Home how in the world
are you saying it's because they just happen to turn
on THE tv and they weren't talking about my football.
Game unless they're From, minnesota it's usually because you were
ON tv and you're around. Him like With Jim, CAVIZEL
i wanted to talk about passionate christ in his career
and he was an avid sports fan and we're sitting
(02:11:12):
around at The indie. Five oh, yeah and that that
was part of it because he was A minnesota. Fan
that kind of led to. It but he, also you,
know THE tv and a sports, fan so he wants
to talk sports And i'm, like, no, no, NO i
want to talk with you. Talk so, yes it's very.
Humbling the truth is it's because every GUY i run
into like that Or, gal they're they're far bigger. STARS
(02:11:33):
i never looked at LIKE i, Said i'm not even
a household name in my own. Home my kids had it,
dad you are you ON tv today that we were growing,
Up SO i wasn't even popular. There so, yeah it
is pretty cool when you're doing it and they're, like oh,
MAN i loved when you did. This you're, like, well
that's that's nice to. Say but, uh let's talk about
you and all your concert tours are you and and
uh and and he'll you know with With William. Shatner
(02:11:56):
at that, time they were doing the uh the Cop
show with heatherlock in that group And adrian's of d
which was what was the name of that cop? Show, yeah,
yeah you know the One i'm talking. About i've said
it a million, times but, yeah there the PEOPLE i
run into are always bigger stars than, Me so when
they mentioned your, name it's, like, Whoa, okay this is pretty.
(02:12:16):
Cool but normally it's me LIKE i wanted to pick
their brain about eight million things because they're the star
of the group And i'm just a mere minion in
the eyes of most when it comes to that celebrity.
Stuff SO tj the, SHOW Tj, hooker there you. Go,
yeah they were filming that and so but he was
diving in the sand And i'm, like this is really.
Cool this Is Bill. Shatner, MAN i love This Captain Captain,
(02:12:38):
Kirk Denny crane. Himself that's, right exactly rated show by
the way By Boston.
Speaker 7 (02:12:47):
Legal he just everywhere he, Went Denny. Crane they're, like, what,
like Who.
Speaker 1 (02:12:56):
Captain? Kirk so, yeah it does, that but you're, right
every now and again you'll get one. This, YEAH i saw.
YOU i watch on you like, what don't bore yourself like.
That i'm not worth the. Watch but, MAN i do
want to talk about when you had that concert that
we got to. See, yeah that show, Right so, yeah
but pretty cool, man pretty. Cool.
Speaker 7 (02:13:13):
Yeah and the REASON i knew that About Jim cavizl
too is because he was doing an interview and you,
know of course they were talking about how hard it
was to film The passion of The christ and getting
struck by lightning all that kind of. Stuff they're, like, oh,
man what got you through? It and he goes thinking
About Minnesota vikings. Football, great, Thanks, Jim, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:13:31):
Thanks it's. Right what a good guy he, was, Though
what a, gentleman you, know what a very respectful gentleman he,
Was so for, sure that's the. Great when all said and,
Done dan you, know you're in the busy around these
guys all the. Time you covered, it and it's and
it's not even name. Dropping it's man the stories because
it's like you get your humbled and honored to be
around them when they're just like normal dudes or normal.
(02:13:53):
Women they're just kind of carrying on about sports or something,
else and they don't disappoint. You that's a really cool
thing when people you really think are cool And William
shatton or those as they didn't Disappoint neither Did. Covizels
so that's the best part of this job is just
getting to share stories with people that are to do
their career far better than you, KNOW i might do.
Mine so that's pretty.
Speaker 7 (02:14:13):
Cool, noah for, sure it is cool when the expectations meet.
Up so, anyway LIKE i, said that was bugging. ME
i wanted to be able to squash that and be able, to,
uh you, know find out who who the boy band.
Speaker 1 (02:14:25):
Was so we got to. That you, go, Brother, yeah
there we. Go so plenty of.
Speaker 5 (02:14:28):
Times still talk some. Astros that's what we'll.
Speaker 7 (02:14:30):
Do uh see a couple of you want to get
in on the phone line seven one, three, two one
two five seven ninety seven one, three, two one two,
five seven. Ninety you're On alvarez next right. Here Sports
talk seven Ninety.
Speaker 3 (02:14:44):
The Jean Salisbury show continues.
Speaker 7 (02:14:47):
On earlier this, week and one of the things he
mentioned was this very thing facing live pitching that was
the final frontier for yourd On alvarez to be able
to reach and pass before he could finally go ahead
and give the thumbs up and, say, yeah put me
back on the lineup.
Speaker 1 (02:15:06):
Card, Absolutely, dan this was and you, know As dana
and his weekly visited at nine, thirty as you, mentioned
and he. Did it was, like, okay once we know
that he feels good, about the next step will be
and he didn't know the exact, day and rightfully so
he didn't, Know, andy did We and hopefully it is
(02:15:26):
sooner than later because this was the final step and
having him back in the lineup the step of if
he can handle the live pitching and how it, feels
and he, says, okay got through, it let's, go then
the only other step is to play. Them so if
that's the, case then it happens today then and he's
comfortable coming out of, it and they's you, know with
(02:15:48):
the way that the bat script and the bat speed
and the way he attacks the baseball and is not you, know,
hurting or if he's hurting but the threshold of pain
Says i'm, good then you will see him sooner than
If if that happens, Today, dan and he's good to,
go why wouldn't you play him this? Weekend? Maybe if
it happens today and he's good to, go do you
(02:16:12):
do you do you need to send him for? Assignment
do you? Say? No, man the big, fellow He's we're past.
That if he if he's good and he Says i'm one,
Percent let's say the ball jumped off his, bat verus
live pitching and he has no wakes up tomorrow and
he's not. Bothered is he in the lineup tomorrow? NIGHT
i would think so, YEAH i absolutely would think, So,
well what would you why would you? Wait, well he's,
(02:16:34):
healthy if he's good to, go why would you? Wait
and that's just.
Speaker 7 (02:16:36):
IT i, mean at that point there is no reason
to not do. SO i, mean the only THING i
can think of is maybe you just, say, hey it's
a couple more. Days we get the off day On
monday and Then tuesday to start off The pirates. Series
that's when we send him out. THERE i MEAN i
would think that Jord, on if he gives you that and, says, yeah,
hey those four at bats right, there that's sim game
(02:16:56):
seeing the.
Speaker 5 (02:16:56):
Ball, okay let's let's. Go the hand feels, fine let's play.
Speaker 1 (02:17:01):
One. Hundred so if and you, don't you wouldn't make
the decision right when the game's over or right when
his you, know live pitching is. Over, right you want
to see how? Okay three hours from the house appeal
the next. Day SO i would imagine you go through
today and all of a, Sudden, man it feels LIKE
i woke up And i'm, good kind of like a
pitcher who goes out and gets his, start and, like, okay,
(02:17:23):
man after the rehab and all you've, Done i'm ready to. Go,
okay we can give seventy pitches. Now but in this,
case the only step left is if you were going
to send him and send him down to hit base
walls for a week in triple air or. Whatever but
if he's good to go, THERE i think he HE
i don't want to waste his good swings in TRIPLE.
A does that make, Sense? Dan, YES i don't need
to waste him. There so for, me if he feels
(02:17:44):
good he comes out of, this because as they've, said
it's on him the threshold of. Pain when he decides
he's ready to, go he'll. Play so if he comes
out of this and wakes up tomorrow morning or goes
to bed, tonight it's, like, yeah, man there's no no after.
EFFECT i feel. GOOD i MEAN i. WOULD i would
expect to see him in the three hole in the
lineup tomorrow if that is the. Case and this is
(02:18:05):
the final deciding, factor as data had alluded. To so
let's hope that there's no pain after this or it's
minimal and the ball jumps off as bad after this live,
pitching and you get the big fellow back in the
lineup and this does not linger the rest of the.
Speaker 7 (02:18:18):
Year and that's the thing, too Is Chandler ROME i
think he shared it last night in an article he
wrote a couple of years. Ago how for position, players
for the most, part rehab assignments are a thing of the,
past because you're not going to forget how to When
jordan's out in the, field see a ball off the,
bat try to track, it try to run it, down
try to catch, it all those different things out there
(02:18:40):
running the. Bases it's more just a conditioning level at that.
Point you can do that with the. Club it's more
about being able to recognize pitches and see live pitching,
again because again we're now at almost a month right
on the day since the last time that he saw
live pitching in a Game may the, second, Right.
Speaker 1 (02:19:00):
Oh it ONLY i, mean if if it's good to,
go let's let's not waste those swings down down. Below let's.
Go let's let's get it. Going So i'm anxious to
see what the the feedback is from him after he
gets out there and is knocking the ball around a. Lot, so,
uh this is an important day for The, astros an
important day for him.
Speaker 7 (02:19:19):
For, sure as yesterday he had on the field but
was taking swings off a pitching. Machine, today a minor
league pitcher will be throwing to. Him SO i, mean
in a, Sense, sean for EVERYTHING i just laid, out

Speaker 5 (02:21:08):
Means have the hit or actually ground into a double
play or even line.
Speaker 1 (02:21:12):
Out so it is literally what it. Says that's. IT i,
thought SHOULD i have him hit a DOUBLE i thought
it meant like you may maybe play twice or the Extra, yeah, yeah,
okay SO i. Didn't so, really when you say double,
play you're talking regular double. PLAY i WANT i would
like to have like a four home run.
Speaker 5 (02:21:31):

have a double? Play And i'm, like, okay is this
video game talk? HERE i am trying to screw. Up, No,
sean it actually Means frombard grounding somebody into a double. Play,
Okay i'm good, MAN i do not.
Speaker 7 (02:23:23):
BAD i can't help. IT i, MEAN i know how
people say politics it's the third. Rail but it, happened
so it's a. Fact don't get mad at.
Speaker 1 (02:23:31):

Speaker 1 (02:23:38):

i don't think we have in. Common at one point
we were both In. Minnesota, okay leave me out of your.
Mouth when it comes to to the biggest dork in. Politics, yeah, no,
okay but.
Speaker 5 (02:23:56):
Thanks when that got out, there it was like you
were a foot ball.
Speaker 13 (02:24:00):
Coach.
Speaker 1 (02:24:01):
Man that must have been a hell of a. Team
yeah you're ass, okay sure he.
Speaker 5 (02:24:06):
Was runs a mean pick.
Speaker 1 (02:24:09):
Six.
Speaker 7 (02:24:10):
Interesting, Okay, hey take your word for. It, There, Tim,
tony see you right. There we'll get you.
Speaker 3 (02:24:15):
Involved.
Speaker 7 (02:24:15):
Uh, also do you want to get back into The
astros bullpen? Conversation we will do that. Here don't forget
The Matt Thomas show With ross coming up at ten.
O'clock right here is The Shawn Salisbury, Show Sports talk
seven Ninety.
Speaker 3 (02:24:29):
The Sewn Salisbury show, Continued, tony good, Morning good morning.
Speaker 1 (02:24:35):
Gentlemen.
Speaker 14 (02:24:38):
Sean When shawn does the interview with With Danger brown does,
it he has an excellent. Job you ask pretty much
all the questions THAT i WOULD i would want to,
KNOW i WOULD i would want to ask.
Speaker 1 (02:24:47):
Him but there's one, Question, SEAN i would like you
to ask. Him what are we gonna do about throwing runners? Out?
Man they Throw they stowed another four last, night one
guy stole. Three so for the season they've stowed seventy.
Three they've they've stolen seventy three out of seventy nine,
(02:25:09):
bases we've thrown out six runners all. Season it's not
just the, catchers it's the pitchers holding them.
Speaker 8 (02:25:15):
On but.
Speaker 1 (02:25:18):
What are we going to?
Speaker 14 (02:25:19):
DO i don't think we can do. ANYTHING i don't
think these two guys are are going to get it.
Done so what are we going to do as far
as getting the pitching staff and sink and holding these runners.
ON i know that they've changed the rules where you
can only throw over three.
Speaker 1 (02:25:36):
TIMES i think when they go to THE abs system
where they don't have to worry about framing, PITCHES i
think that's gonna help as. Well but please ask him
what are we going to do about the catching? Situation And,
tony thank you before you. Go thanks for the. COMPLIMENT
i appreciate. It we always look forward to Our wednesdays
AND i do with Dana. IS i have asked him
about it And Steve sparks both about it's a. Weakness
(02:26:00):
how do you fix? It And i'm not sure they have.
TO i mean that they're as close as it. Gets AND,
i you, KNOW i think we all have the two
biggest thoughts are, one you, know to pop and throw
and get it out and make an accurate, throw but more,
importantly you got to hold them on so they don't
get a. Jump and he has said AND i Think
steve has sparks alluded to it as, well about making
(02:26:23):
sure and you're, limited as you Mentioned tony with the
three throws of when to use and when and not be,
judicious all those, things but it has to become a
priority because it's going to end up. Casting it's cost.
Him now you're right that that percentage is borderline embarrassing
and a major. Weakness SO i have and you know
WHAT i Will, well you, know next TIME i have him,
ON i will ask, again have we? Improved how can you?
(02:26:47):
Improve can it be an emphasis In? Tony maybe you
have a better idea about. THIS i don't know is
AND i THINK i asked this, Too, dan If i'm not,
MISTAKEN i might have. That is it something you can
fix during a? Season you know WHAT i, Mean? Tony
and If tony's still, on is it something you can
fix during a season because you don't work on that
stuff and because you don't, practice you know WHAT i?
(02:27:09):
Mean and in the game you're more worried About, OKAY
i want to keep the runner, there but, HELL i
can't worry about. That then throw a fat fastball down
the middle and right Down broadway and the guy hammers.
It so it's kind of tough because it's hard to
work on in, season you know WHAT i, MEAN i
think IT'S i think what is what's going to have
to happen is this is going to be an.
Speaker 14 (02:27:28):
Evolution this is gonna be an evolution at the monor
league level where these guys have gotten used to using
the A bs system that you can tell the younger
guys are comfortable with.
Speaker 1 (02:27:37):
It, uh the pitch clocks are comfortable with.
Speaker 14 (02:27:39):
That AND i think they're just going to have to
start at the at the very grassroots level in our
system and get and work on the pitchers holding runners.
Speaker 1 (02:27:47):
On that's the, key holding the runners on and the
degree you just have to get the better throwing. Position,
man they're they're. There they've they've gotten lazy and they're
not in a throwing. Position they're not able to move
their free fake fraberbel. THERE i, mean the he's throwing
out five. Runners but you have to look at who's.
Speaker 14 (02:28:04):
Pitching there's some pictures that do hold guys on that
we're almost not throwing anybody out at, all and it's
gonna it has cost. Us AND i promise you when
we get into when we get into close, games you,
know if if you're gonna lean on your pitching, staff
part of that equation is good defense and and and.
Speaker 1 (02:28:22):
To go along with the. Pitching and if you can't
hold runners, on that's a single turns into a. Double
these guys an automatic, Double, tony it's an automatic. Double
guys are running on us that don't. Run the guys
don't run are running on. Us so it's a. Problem
it's it needs to be. Addressed it's gonna cost. Us
it's gonna cost us in close.
Speaker 14 (02:28:42):
Games if you're gonna play close games and lean on your,
pitching you gotta cover all the.
Speaker 1 (02:28:46):
Bases and that's Just i'm happy.
Speaker 8 (02:28:49):
With you.
Speaker 14 (02:28:49):
Know i'm a Half i'm a half full. Guy i'm
not a. Negative i'm not a negative person towards my baseball.
TEAM i JUST i watched like everybody, else AND i
see things and and and data knows if this has
got to be.
Speaker 1 (02:29:01):
Addressed but they've got to start at. That absolutely so
does the. Spot good, Point, Tony thanks for the, call,
brother AND i appreciate the COMPENT i and And. DAN
i don't. Know this is. Hard it's it's hard to.
Fix i'm just gonna say for, ME i don't see
how it gets fixed. THIS i think the weakness is.
Exposed and If i'm an opposing, team until you prove
(02:29:23):
to me you can throw me, Out i'm running IF
i got a guy who's got because it's just the
percentage is borderline, crazy AND i don't know how in
the middle you just stop down and, Say, okay we're
going to get better at. This maybe you. CAN i
guess the key is not let anybody get the first base,
right which is hard to. Do BUT I i just
don't know. How it is a glaring weakness That i'm
(02:29:45):
not sure is an overnight fixed and you can see
by the percentage it's a, problem and we kind of
We basically what we're trying to do is throw a
cologne on a on a something that doesn't smell real.
Good and it's just whether it's the, move the ability
to hold them on tipping when they're going to the,
plate and then a catcher not in POSITION a, throughout
(02:30:06):
or it isn't getting the pitch he needs to throw them,
out or is not making an accurate or is laid
on a pop whatever it, is it's a combination of
more than one, thing of more than two. Things BUT
i don't see how you fix it during the, Season,
DAN i just. Don't.
Speaker 7 (02:30:19):
WELL i, mean it's really kind of comparable to the
twists and stunts issues that The texans offensive line had
last year With Bobby.
Speaker 1 (02:30:28):
SLOWICK i, mean, it's you, know.
Speaker 7 (02:30:29):
One of those you can, say, hey twists and, stunts
BUT i mean you've got to be able to plan for.
It you've got to be able to adjust to it
and do all those different types of. Things and it's
also an issue with The astros being able to steal.
BASES i, mean you've got two guys with eight this,
Year myers And. Penia but aside from, that you've got
guys who have also gotten thrown out a handful of
(02:30:50):
times on the basis so.
Speaker 5 (02:30:52):
You're not very good at doing that.
Speaker 7 (02:30:53):
Either and in, baseball the first base coach was the
first base coach. Too, well you, know you get over, There,
sean and people will see sometimes that a first base
coach will have to stop watching their.
Speaker 1 (02:31:04):
Hand that's what they're.
Speaker 7 (02:31:05):
Doing they're they're they're clicking it on and off to, see,
hey how how fast is this guy to home?
Speaker 1 (02:31:10):
Plate and and how quick at? Times, ALSO i would
imagine you wonder you, know you're your eyeball and the
move in the ball to first base and the lot
all those things are going to Be you're right that
you'll see a lot of them that got that thing
tucked in their hand to see how quickly his move
and the ball gets to home plate from the time
he comes out of his.
Speaker 7 (02:31:27):
Stretch, well and it's, ALSO i, mean the rules now
are slanted towards the offensive. GAME i, mean you're speeding up,
pitchers you, Are you're you're also limiting the amount of
times they can throw over to first. Base so you
can't have five pickoff throws in a row over there.
Anymore so you, know once they throw two over, there
if they try to pick you off, again, well even
(02:31:49):
if you're tagged, out you're going to second because it's
a ball unless they get.
Speaker 1 (02:31:52):
You but the bases are, bigger, RIGHT i, mean you've.
Speaker 7 (02:31:57):
Got that, Too SO i, mean you, know it's not
as simple AS i talked about it last night on
the postgame, Show. Sean it's not as simple as tell
the picture to hurry. Up now you're throwing off all
the mechanics when you do, that and you're throwing them
out of their. RHYTHM i, mean, yes every once in
a while slidestep kind of change up the look a little.
Speaker 5 (02:32:14):
Bit you can do that to kind of throw off their.
Timing BUT i, mean, clearly if.
Speaker 1 (02:32:19):
You're a picture that's not a slidestep, guy now you
got a.
Speaker 7 (02:32:21):
Problems and that's why those, yeah and that's why those
guys get stolen on all the. Time Brian brady is
one of the cheapest defenders on this. Team he's got
that high light. Kick so as soon as you see
he's going, up you got any speed whatsoever you got
to jump right.
Speaker 5 (02:32:34):
There you're halfway to second or third at that.
Speaker 1 (02:32:36):
Point and do you mentioned one word THAT i never
want to, hear not from BUT i did a picture
or quarterback or anybody never wants to hear hurry? Up, yeah. Urgent,
Yeah hurried is a bad thing because that's. Desperate so
between hurried and you're and, clutter those are two. Words a,
picture you got to remove the clutter and you're, right
all of a, sudden you're thinking on to a slide
(02:32:58):
step or, no that's out of my. Realm and then
guess what happens then that that stolen base that you're
trying to prevent ends up with a ball that you
threw that's out and over the, plate and the four
hitter hits it in the upper tank because you missed your,
spot because the because the clutter and you're so inundated
with the rent and understand that, information but also the
(02:33:19):
runner on first base and how many throws in this and,
yes everything's set up for the offense to. Succeed it's.
Hard that's WHY i think it's a hard end season
thing to. FIX i really, do because then you're then
you're taking the risk of a one run turning into.
Two but right, now a walk or a single is
a the guys for the most part standing on second.
Speaker 7 (02:33:40):
Base, YEAH i mean It's and it's also too it's
not as simple as, hey pitch. Out, no the zones
are too. Small these guys are too good that you
don't want to get.
Speaker 1 (02:33:50):
Pitch out every time somebody's on first base right, right
especially if you're having, trouble if you if you're a
pitcher that's struggled with the. Location right, now you want
to get ahead and account you sure as, hell especially
if the team's tendency run on a first just, said
whatever their tendency and running is whatever those metrics tell.
You you start doing, that you're down To oh and
then what do you gotta? Do you got to come
in with a strike and you got the clutter of
a guy on first base because you walk the guy. Before,
(02:34:11):
yeah it just it's a slippery slope that goes the wrong.
Way so this this may have to be an off
season cultural change from Like tony, said minor league is
how are we going to get? This but it also
takes lonely work by the pitcher and a catcher of
getting in a. Stance the framing parts become a, problem
and we're not framing a pitch of foot outside the pay,
(02:34:33):
stop it outside the. Plate get to a, point you,
know well one, knee you ain't throwing many people. Out you,
know there's very few Put rodriguez is that can snap
throw sitting on his ass and get people. Out it's.
Hard it's. Hard so all those factors and here you
know it's, like well what are we going to? Do
but it's become a double for the opposing team many, times,
well in the.
Speaker 7 (02:34:54):
Case Of Chandler simpson last, night it was a. Triple
then it was a home run because he came home
on a throwing air after he was trying to steal.
Speaker 5 (02:35:00):
Third all, right coming out.
Speaker 7 (02:35:02):
Next some of you might do this this, weekend but
others are choosing intentionally not.
Speaker 5 (02:35:07):
To we'll discuss that.
