radio station has a rocket. This is Sports Talk seven ninety,

(00:24):
let's do this. Sewn Salisbury to usc true longtime friend
Shawn Salisbury, Ryan Lima, go Lobos. This is the Seawan
Salisbury Show.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Texans gearing up for the Titans this coming weekend. Forty
nine Ers and Lions Monday Night Football. Seven ninety is
the number to doom. We're gonna talk talk some college football.
Got the college football playoffs, uh second round kicking off tomorrow.
(00:59):
I also got a full slate of college football games
that happened over the weekend. Before we get to that,
let's take another call talk to Scott. Scott good morning, Hey,
good morning.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
How are you doing, good man?
Speaker 2 (01:08):
What's on your mind?
Speaker 3 (01:11):
Well, as I was on hold, I had a second question.
But first I would ask convince me and other Houstonian
fans why we should buy season tickets to the Texans
next year with this product that they're putting on the field.
And secondly, who do we put on the field next
week against the Titans, because we don't want to injure
(01:32):
our players, of course, And I'll take your answers off
the air because I got to drive.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
Thank you, thank you, Scott well Sean. Why should people
buy season tickets?
Speaker 1 (01:40):
Well, why would you either one of you buy season tickets?
And I'll tell you why.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Uh, for me, I wouldn't buy season tickets.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
One.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
I'm not trying to spend that kind of money. And
to the money to get good seats is outrageous. So
I'm not spending I don't even know how much season
tickets are you plus on I think you got to
wait in line to get them. I'm not I'm not
spending multiple thousands of dollars to sit in those bleeds. Yeah,
thank you, Brian. Yeah, and with this offense, I ain't
(02:10):
doing it.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Well. I don't go to NFL games anyway, So I
wouldn't buy season tickets. I mean maybe the Raiders, but.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
For the average fan, I mean, I I don't don't
know if I could make it.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
The average fans not buying normally. I mean when I
say average fan, the fan that can't, I mean that
one game of year is expensive. They're not buying season
tickets right, and the ones that are or are going
to do it because they're hanging on that. Okay, there's
a lot of potential why you'd buy them. I can
roll through the Nico Collins and c. J. Stroud and
Will Anderson. There's some really good pieces and players on
(02:47):
the team. But I can understand that the way they've
gone this year, you'd take a set back and hesitate.
There is no doubt. I would imagine a lot of
fans are sitting in purgatory right now, not knowing which
way to go right because of they love the potential
and love the ability, but the production has not matched
the potential. Or let's turn that around, the potential has
not matched for the production, right. The production is is
(03:10):
is far the potential we have way up here, and
the production has been mid even though they won the division.
How many teams have they beaten that are good this year?
Name me one Buffalo and who else it's a good team.
Who else have they beaten? They beat Miami, which is
Miami's basically a five hundred team. Okay, so that is it?
(03:33):
Otherwise than that? And I know people say, well they've
been one score games. I didn't know there was a
category the fourth one. Well, look at look Okay, Kevin O'Connell.
Look at his run, look at his since he's been
in the league, his wins and losses in one score games.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Yeah, he was like eleven and.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
All right. So if they're oh, they they've been in
every game. Well, we don't have a whole lot of
the NFL one double digit spread, I believe going into
the weekend this week, maybe maybe a second we don't.
It's not like college. We don't have very often. So
a nine point win or a ten point win in
the NFL is a big that's a lot of points.
So one score games meaning eight points are less. You're
(04:11):
losing them. Oh you're in it, but you're losing them.
So is there a category that says we almost want
to hang a ban or no, you got to learn
how to win them. So why you'd buy season tickets
is the potential in the quarter You say, man, there's
there's a lot of players to like here. If we
can get man in Tankdale, boy, that's going to be
difficult to come back from sooner than later. That's a
hard he's his rehabit, mental rehab ahead of just not
(04:34):
just the physical and the emotional part of It's going
to be a rough road. But Stroud and Nico kNs
there's a lot to like. And on defense, they got
some guys that fly around, but the production says to you,
I'd hesitate and I don't blame them. And what was
this second question? Did you have to say? This other
point was the Texans offense?
Speaker 2 (04:54):
It was I thought it was just a season ticket question.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
But he made he made a second point. That's the
key is though, that's would you and is this team
you know, productive enough for you to warrant Let's let
the playoffs enroll? For oh, I know what it was,
but let's let the playoffs go. Maybe they go on
hot streak and go, but the trend this year is
that's not who they are. He asked about who would
you play the injuries, about playing this week, I personally
(05:21):
we're not playing well enough healthy to win against a
good team. So I'm not going into this worried about
getting twelve guys hurt. I offensively, I need to get
into a rhythm. I'm starting CJ. Stroud this week. I
would now, well, it means nothing. It only means something
to rhythm and feeling good. I get it. But you've
(05:43):
gone this far. I just I just don't coach that way.
I can't coach worried about the injuries. I mean, now,
I'm not going to do anything stupid in a game
like this and play them and play and play them
and people getting knocked around to it. And of course
you take a risk every time you go out on
the field. But I personally, I think the offense needs
to get something feeling good about themselves. I would play
(06:04):
them early. Yeah, you have to see how the flow
of the game goes. There's no sacred cows on offense
right now. No, They're just not. I mean, just just
take the running game. Joe Mixon had twenty six yards
rushing against Baltimore. He had fifty seven against Kansas City.
Dari A goombawalle led all rushers against Miami with thirty
(06:24):
five yards. Okay, are you comfortable enough going in say, oh,
our offense is where we want to be. Let's sit
him out after what you saw against Baltimore. And now
you sit them out and then then you play them
the next week in the playoffs. That's a long time
for a team that doesn't have offense, that hasn't had
a lot of production to feel good. I actually start him.
(06:45):
But in truth, I would imagine you're gonna get a
bunch of guys sit that it doesn't matter, But to
me it does because what if they go into this game,
get an ass kicking and they don't play their starters.
Aren't you gonna feel awful? Yeah? I mean not that
it matters. I mean they go in there and win
the playoff game. Who the hell? No, they won their
first playoff game last year, but they were a better
team at this time last year. Not more talented, but better,
(07:06):
better production. So I would imagine a lot are going
to say I personally, and I know, well, Sean wy
it doesn't make sense. It makes sense to me. Now
you can disagree. Somebody else calling can say rest them,
sit them, They don't need it. They do need the work.
They actually do need the work, because sometimes they play
like rookies. They do need the work. And I would
try to get into a rhythm and play like it
(07:27):
with single elimination at least for a quarter, yeah, and
say we got to have something good because I right
now I don't know about you. I don't trust that
the offense is ready to play against their first playoff opponent.
They're not don't. I got to see more for me
to trust that they're ready to go into the following week.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
They need consistency, They need to, quite frankly, just they
need to put together a game plan. That's where I
teased a couple segments ago, a game plan to make
this offense look like basically look like they haven't looked
so far the season, meaning consistency, balance on predictability. Like
(08:01):
all those things we've seen, it's been inconsistent, it's predictable
at times, and quite frankly, it's just been average at best.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
I mean, if they tell you Stroud or Dumiko, Ryans
or Bobby Slok right now, I looked at you and said, oh,
we don't. We're gonna be okay. Do you trust him
saying that no because you haven't seen No, Actually, you
know what the and I know you're on vacation.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Last week we had Aaron Wilson on and he had
a video of up on his social media of what's
his name, Titus Howard. Everybody else in the locker room said,
we got embarrassed. C J. Stroud said, it's the worst
game of my career. We came out flat. Daniel Hunter said,
we needed a game plan better. Everybody was being honest,
and then you had Titus Howard go, oh, I'm not
I'm not worried. And I asked Aaron, I said, what
(08:42):
are you buying that? Titus Howard literally said, Oh, I'm
not worried. I'm not concerned. Yeah, I'm not concerned about
this team. What do you mean Everybody else in the
locker room is telling us, hey, basically, we have looked terrible,
and you're gonna sit there and be like, oh, yeah, yeah,
I'm not I'm not concerned.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
Well you should be. Well that's the old football macho
approach of we got this, don't worry about the trend says,
we have to be worried about you the way you've played.
I don't understand when I hear the word flat. You're
playing the friggin Baltimore Ravens in your building and there's
only two teams playing that day, so the whole football
(09:17):
world's gonna watch you, and on the time you're playing,
nobody else is on. And how do you when I
hear we were flat, yeah, I think that's a bitch
ass excuse.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
How how and if anything, they kicked your ass in
the playoffs last.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
Year, you owe them one, right. Baltimore wasn't flat, No
was Kansas City. And they're actually on the road, not
going to be with their families for Christmas till later
that night. You at least got to be home with
your families on a six o'clock wake up call or
later in that day. So flat. Yeah, flat in a
preseason game, Flat in a game in September that you're
(09:51):
supposed to win in your twenty point favorites, Flat against Baltimore. Yeah,
in December on Christmas Day. Flat. That that's a that's
a flaw.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
Yeah, Titus Howard said, quote, I'm not concerned. This team
is resilient. I know what we can do.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
End quote. Yeah, well, okay, I disagree with Titus Howard. Yeah,
I think I know what they can do too. There's
a big difference in knowing what they can do and
actually doing it, and they haven't done it enough offensively.
Now they may come out next week and kick ass
in this last game, and in the playoff game, we're like, Okay,
looks like they're back for a game. But you tell
(10:30):
me where the trends have shown you that this team
is going to dominate anybody with their offense right.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
Now, there is nothing. There's nothing.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
We have been nothing but complimentary when they've earned it. Well,
why this isn't negative, This is just fact. Yeah, because
I hate seeing it too. But you can't tell me
this team hasn't taken a step back offensively.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
It's a major step back.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
Yeah, I mean you only go through the league of
the playoff. Tampa Bay's offense is better than the Texans
right now.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
Yeah, look what Baker Mayfield is doing with that offense.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
There's not one person or one coach's fault. But they
have got to get better. And I'll be honest with
you they I'm playing them for a little little bit
this week. I need I need to see some rhythm
for me as a play caller, just.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
Real quick, as we go to break, Kansas City has
a better offense. Buffalo, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, charge the Chargers, And honestly,
like I said earlier in the six o'clock hour, the
Denver Broncos with bow knicks right now has a better
offense than the Texans. Those are the playoff teams. Then
you look go over at the NFC Minnesota, Philadelphia, the
(11:28):
Rams playing good football, Tampa Bay, Detroit, the Commanders, the
Green Bay Packers, all of those have better offenses.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
Yeah, you could argue that of the twelve or the
fourteen playoff teams that this team is is the yeah,
second or third. They're there at the bottom. They'd be
if we go and rank the fourteen playoff teams, Uh huh,
they'll finish thirteenth or fourteen.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
Yeah, offensively not potential production production, Yeah, production this season,
I would agree. Yeah, they're down towards the bottom, I
would agree. And in the NFC, every single playoff team
right now has a better offense. The three that would
be at the bom for me in the AFC would
be the Chargers, yet they I'm sorry, it'd be Denver
and Houston would be the bottom two for.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
The rookie quarterback in Houston and then depending on who
Russ Wilson is and in that play because I trust
their defense in Pittsburgh as well. That that's where. Now,
how you slice those last three, fine, but it's going
to be twelve thirteen, fourteen, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, twelve, those
are the three. How you trust those threes? Fine, but
you can't. You can't even the other eleven teams. There
(12:31):
is no question of what offense you'd take over them,
all of them.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
Yeah, that's all with all these playmakers, and I get.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
Right, I'm actually shocked for saying this, right, I know,
but production says this is not hyperbolic, right, it's a fact. Yeah,
the lack of production. Man, I'm starting my regulars for
at least a quarter this week. I need some rhythm.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
You do need rhythm, There's no doubt. Let's continue to
discussion next right here on The Shawn Salisbury Show.
