Saul. Great, Okay, let'sdo this. Sean Salisbury to usc Truth,
longtime friend Shawn Salisbury, Bryan Lima, go Lobo. This is the
Sean Salisbury Show. Joined us forhis weekly Monday visit a little sooner this

(00:24):
week. Up little coffee. Uh, welcome in, ma man. How
you doing? I'm doing great? You know. I try to be polite,
yeah, always and always Yeah,be considerate. I want to be
considerate and I don't want to infringeon anybody else's time. So to move
it up a little bit so Ican participate in a charity event this morning.

(00:46):
I really appreciate it. Oh areyou kidding me? Brother? We
wouldn't be We didn't listen. Wejust started at four am. If you
wanted to, we to just takewhatever you need. You know, we
try to be kind. Okay, let's do it at four o'clock next next
week. If you're this is upand ready to go, I BET's let's
do it. Okay. You knowwhat, give us a little pub on
the charity event? What's it for? And where are you playing? You

(01:07):
know? John Lucas has a charityevent right uh? Uh? You know,
former Rocket, former NBA coach andall that. So he's got an
event, uh to raise money. So I'm not exactly sure what the what
the cause is, so I'll findout here in about fifteen minutes. It's
awesome, uh when I when Istep outside my car, but uh,
always happy to help. Hey,Steve, they like in golf terms,

(01:30):
you're just a solid, solid ballstriker. You know what I'm saying.
Just a solid ball striker, Iam not. Yeah, that's why they
play scrammar. There you go.I'm watching some guys on the golf range
right now. I'm sitting in theparking lot at Memorial Golf Course, and
I saw one guy. I'm notkidding. He was doing jumping jacks before
he well, guess what. Heprobably also has iron covers. It is

(01:55):
golf bag, which means bet betagainst him the entire time. Steve Spark
joins us. We appreciate him makingtime for us a little sooner today so
we can get out there and makea difference at the charity golf turn.
All right, Steve, I saidearlier, this is the most important This
past weekend, and they're all important. Was the most important and impressive week
end of the year for the Astros. How about you, Yeah, I

(02:17):
agree. I mean it was veryimpressive. I mean, especially against the
quality of starting pitchers that they facedand how they dominate. I mean,
the last two starts for the Astrosagainst a very potent team, they did
a phenomenal job. So, youknow, stepping up in a big moment.
We've seen the Astros do that acouple of times this year. But

(02:39):
hey, you know, they walkonto the field and they've been in the
postseason for a lot of years. They should have some swagger. It's not
like you're holding the Baltimore Orioles andsuch reverence. Everybody should be looking at
the Astros the same way. Andwhen they're healthy and when they're playing well
and you get guys, you know, starting to step up that weren't earlier

(03:02):
in the season. This team isa handful. Asher's broadcaster see Sparks for
his weekly visit. Well, Stevewith that, and you're right about the
You know, this team's swagger hasbeen a big part of their and intimidation
going in you know what, you'rethey exhaust you in the in the last
seven years they've been doing it.This year at times has been different.
So let me ask you, doesthe swagger look different to you now than

(03:23):
it did ten days ago. Well, hey, listen, So when you
when you talk about swagger with theAstros, the first guy that I think
about is Bragmant, right, andwhen he's swinging the bat the way he
is right now, I mean that. I mean, that's just a solid
punch. You're doing this though withoutKyle Tucker Jordan swinging the bat like he

(03:44):
usually does. Altive ignites the teamwith the home run, by the way
thirty one and eight the Astros arewhen alt A leads a ballgame off with
a home run. So, uh, he's the igniter. You know,
when certain guys are doing this, starting to stretch it out, you look
more athletic with low Berfeto. Imean, I think it looks good,
you know, And I was neverreally that concerned with the offense. I

(04:08):
feel like this offense is really reallygood. It's just the depth of the
pitching. How are they gonna beable to withstand this long season? The
way things are going right now,you need a six starter at sometimes sean.
You know, when you start toget a very exhausting schedule, when
you're not getting as many off daysas they are right now I think you

(04:28):
got to slide somebody in there atsome point. So I think to go
out there and get like a fourthor fifth type starter at some point to
give him some lenk. I thinkit's going to be very important, Steve,
with that getting back to this teamin the way that you know,
swinging the bat and scoring runs that'snever been in. I mean times they've
struggled, but you know eventually it'sgoing to happen. Think about middle of

(04:51):
last week, Steve. Early lastweek, we're talking ten games out.
You constantly say, get to fivehundred, and it'll be difficult, but
get to five hundred. I meanwe literally blinkedin. You've said this for
with what We've been doing this forfour or five years, whatever it's been,
Steve, And whenever they're going throughthis, you say, listen,
it can change in a hurry becauseof the talent in this lineup and the
length in it. When they're goingright, and now here we are two

(05:12):
games under five hundred, six gamesout, and like that, the entire
mo and paradigm shift has happened. Now they got to sustain it. But
I'll be damned, a week agoit is like, oh man, ten
games out. Now they're six andit happened overnight, it felt and a
dominant performance on the weekend, right, And you said this right in the
middle of that little diatribe you justspoke, You said, they got to

(05:38):
sustain this, and how do youdo that? You got to be careful,
You got to make sure that youdon't exhaust guys. And I start
to get concerned a little bit withyou know what double barrel means in baseball
speak as far Oh yeah, twoguys up in a bullpen. Yeah,
yeah, So you get into agame and I understand this, I really
do, just because of where theystarted this season. But when you get

(06:00):
two guys up in a four rungame late and you say to one guy,
you're going in if we don't score, you're going in if we score
a couple of runs, or youknow, something like that. So it
does a couple of things. Itmakes two guys get hot. In essence,
one guy's wasted. The guy thatdoesn't get in gets wasted and he's

(06:23):
not going to be as good andhe gets taxed. And the other thing
about this is the guy who you'retelling if we score a couple more runs,
you're in you're saying, well,I can't get three outs with the
four run lead. I mean, that's the mindset. And I understand this
is a team game, but toget the most out of your guys out

(06:44):
of the bullpen, you got tomake sure that you play those mind games
too. Yep. And I meanthere's a lot of time to talk in
the bullpen and to run this thing. This is very difficult. This is
the hardest thing to do as amanager, let alone a new manager,
is to run a bullpen and tokeep guys healthy. But what you want
to do, I mean, youcan't do this all the time, But

(07:05):
what you want to do is getsomebody up and get him into the game.
That's it, just bottom line. But to do this over and over,
I'm telling you through the course ofone hundred and sixty two it's not
sustainable. So you've got to becareful with that. So they're going to
rely on depth, they're going torely on staying healthy, and they got

(07:26):
to get some rest. Steve SparksAstro's broadcaster for a couple more minutes here
on his weekly visit. It's alittle early today, and accommodate him so
he can get out there and helpit a charity tournament for John Lucas Steve
with Renelle Blanco. We've talked abouthim and he can make the argument he's
been the MVP on this team.Is first off, is this who he
is? I mean, under duress, it's been who he is this year.

(07:48):
But what a shift for his game. And you've talked about developing another
pitch and making sure you're throwing strikesgetting ahead in the count. But do
you trust that this is who heis and that this is who he's going
to be all the way through Septemberand into the postseason. I think so,
you know, I think adding achange up number one. It's a

(08:09):
great pitch, right, so youcan almost tell them that you're throwing that
pitch and it's still really hard tohit, and because it moves in different
directions, it doesn't behave the sameway every time he throws it. The
other reason is is to go fromtwo pitches to three pitches, a guy
can't sit on one and adjust tothe other. Right, you know,

(08:31):
when you have three, it makesthings so much more difficult as a hitter
to try to sit on a slideror whatever, and it makes every pitch
that much better because you can't seton one of them. So, you
know, I see so many swingand misses with the slider. When I
look at it, it doesn't lookgreat, but I see so many swinging
misses on it, so that tellsme he's tunneling it very well off of

(08:54):
his fastball, so it's hard torecognize. And number two is the change
ups in the back of their minds, you know, they just think,
man, I've got to make surethis pitches up. And then the slider
breaks off the plate, the swingingmess and here we go. He's seven
seven innings deep again. So Ithink it's for real. And I say
that because I see so much swingingmyths right, and it's it's been.

(09:16):
I mean, he has not otherthan maybe one average start. He's been
so solid. And talk about sustainingit, Steve, He has sustained at
this entire first half of the season. Steve. Okay, we always talk
and you mentioned about Bregman's energy andswagger. It starts there, and Steve,
that's kind of been the most sinceyou and I have been talking on
this show. So let me askyou this. I want you to remove

(09:37):
Bregman from this conversation as we headinto the All Star break in the second
half of the season and make itan everyday player not a pitcher, then
who is the next guy in linethat has to continually and sustain delivering like
they like either they have or theyhaven't in the first half. Who's the
next guy online that's going to providethat? You say, we need that

(09:58):
to sustain, ain't it to havea chance to win the division? I'm
gonna say it's Kyle Tucker. Andthe reason why I say that is,
I mean, it's an obvious choicefor his talent, right, But the
reason I say that is because Bregman'sswinging the bat so well, I think
he stays in the two hole.I don't think Tucker goes back to the
two hole. So where's Tucker gonnago. He's probably gonna go to the

(10:20):
cleanup spot. And who's he gonnaprotect? Who's he gonna protect? And
that's you rd On. So Ithink for the Astros to really take over
and to play great baseball, Ithink Kyle needs to continue to wrack up
the RBIs in big situations because alot of teams don't like to pitch the

(10:41):
yord On and for good reason. But Kyle Tucker is in the MVP conversation
as well, and I think forthe Astros to get it done, and
it might be the guy that hitsafter Tucker, might be Yin or Diaz,
but those guys are gonna have topick up the slide because the first
three guys in this lineup right now, if Bregman continues to swing it the
way he is, it looks likehe's found something. I think he can

(11:01):
stick with it. I think theAstros are in really good shape and I
think it starts to lengthen out now. I mean, I don't want a
dog or bray you, but nowwith him out of the lineup, the
Astros lineup looks more athletic and morelengthy. Again, Steve, I'm gonna
let you go just a couple, you know, cooking about a minute and
a half left for me? Isone you mentioned this first three with Tucker

(11:22):
back and the way he was swingingthe bat. We know how good he
is from one, two, three, four, al two, Ve,
Bregman, Jordan and Tucker. Isthis still when they're right? Can you
put them at the top of thelist. And I know there's Dodgers,
and there's Yankees and there's Atlanta. When the Counya is in the lineup but
he's not, is still the mostfeared one, two, three, four
in baseball. If you're an opposingpitcher, I think you're they're top five,

(11:46):
right. I'm not going to goout there and try to be that
Homers and say that they're the best. They might be, but I say
top five is being fair there.Yeah, But one thing you don't want
to be is top heavy. Andyou look at a lot of lineus and
we look at this all the timewhen we're filling out our score books.
Is you know, a lot ofteams look very top heavy. They've got

(12:07):
a lot of good guys at thevery top. But then it gets pretty
bad, you know. And ifyou can get some activity and some production
out of your bottom four of yourlineup, you're in business. That's when
it makes it very difficult on anotherteam, not only for the starter,
but for the relievers too. Steve, and I'll leave you with this.
Does it you mentioned we talked aboutsustaining it with a team like Colorado,

(12:31):
who you're supposed to beat, andthe Mets, who you should beat when
you go on the road. Isthere a tendency or do you have to
fight against after a dominant series overthe weekend and a day off not to
get caught up in Okay, we'vearrived and get beat by a Colorado team
in your own building. I don'tknow what's going to happen results wise,
but I guarantee you that they're notgoing to take anybody for granted. They

(12:54):
prepare the same way every day. They don't take anybody for granted. Do
they play up to a against ateam like Baltimore. Probably, you know,
that makes everybody a little bit morehyper focus because Corbyn Burns can embarrass
you. Well yeah, if you'renot on top of your game. So
you know, it's just the natureof the business. But they're not going
to take anybody lightly, you know. And that's what I love about this

(13:15):
team. They prepare very well. They've got a great formula. They've got
guys who can lead and show theway on how to do things on a
day to day basis. And soguys like low Perffeedo and and the Myers
in the mccormicks of Yesteryear, we'reable to learn how to do this on
a daily basis to be consistent.I mean, that's the whole key to
this is have a plan, preparethe right way, and be ready to

(13:39):
go to battle every single night. And it's been a calling card of theirs
over these last seven or eight yearsof success. And it was nice to
see McCormick's power back come back.Steve. We'll visit that. Hopefully he
sustains out and we have you onnext Monday we can visit more about him.
Hit him straight, brother, goodthing you're doing today and we appreciate
you making time when you could havecanceled all the way around to go to
this tournament. Thank you, andwe look forward to next Monday. Bud,

(14:03):
you got it, Sean, thanks, thanks you. That's the great.
Steve Sparks will come back and discusswhat he had to say. Where
do you put one, two, three, four when Tucker's in the lineup?
Top five or better? Sports Talkseven ninety
