Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome in Steve Sparks, Astros broadcaster, for his weekly visit
every Monday on the road back home after an incredible
road trip. Steve, Welcome in, utter domination. And you talk
about pitching, talk about the way they went about their business.
If there's a psychological advantage advantage Astros, they're playing as

(00:21):
if they're the best team in baseball. Welcome in.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
What do you think, Well, they outscored the Dodgers twenty
nine to six in that series. I mean, I know
there's an eighteen to one game mixed in there, but
that's a great, really good offense the Dodgers and the
Astros held them down, a team that's had more comeback
wins than anybody by that long shot. And the Astros
bullpen proved that if you make good pitches at the

(00:45):
end of the game, the teams are going to come
back nearly as often. So if pitching, you know, we
can say that over and over. But guys contributing like
Cooper Hommel and that short, guys that they plug in,
whether it be seventh in the lineup or ninth in
the lineup. In that six game road trip, the ninth
place hitter for the Astros got on base thirteen times,

(01:05):
and that means so much to what they're able to
do second time through the order with guys on base
and continuing to put pressure on the other teams. So
it's been time, Christian Walker. We've been waiting for that too,
haven't we.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
Yeah, Steven, and I know hard game to gain momentum
is tough because you've run into a good pitcher and
that momentum gets punched in the face. But that confidence
moving forward. He's had success in Colorado and against the
Dodgers in his career, and it looked like that continued.
Did you see anything different about him other than I
mean his eyes. I'm sure we're lighting up. But what's

(01:41):
different or coming out of this weekend or these two games?
Should I say a series? Should I say against Colorado
and LA that told you anything different than you already knew.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
No, there wasn't a whole lot when I told you this.
When I watch him in battie practice or in the games,
the balance looks great and the way looks really good.
I just keep seeing him fouling off some pitches that
he probably drives. And when he got to Colorado, I
think he had six hits in that series, but it's
really started to drive the ball in LA and he's

(02:13):
got the highest ops of any visiting player ever at
Dodger Stadium, which is ridiculous. But it's just one of
those things. John. You know this is you feel very confident.
You don't know your exact numbers, you just know that
you play really well there and everything that he swung
at he put the barrel on and he didn't foul off,

(02:34):
hit able pitches, He drove him to the gaps, he
hit opppos of field, homers, whatever you needed. He was
right in the middle of everything. So hopefully that's what's
going to jump start his ASTROS career.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
Steve Broadcaster, you played for a long time. I'm just
trying to pull you out like we're sitting around having
a conversation like we are, but deeper dive into we
hear all the time. And we've talked about the culture
when they get here, the way they develop players not
only that come in from other places, but that they've
that are homegrown. But maybe another level, maybe I'm reaching

(03:05):
into the psychological part of it. Why I hear all
that we do, Why why are they able to do
what they do? Steve I would take this record if everybody,
if Bregman Tucker and we're still here in Jordan Alvarez
was the MVP the first half of the season, I
would take the record they have now and take a
look at all this So they've already overcome the tough

(03:25):
stuff with injuries psychologically, just from a vantage point maybe
different You're insights, Steve, Why are they.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
So good at this? I think they prepare very well.
I think we all gain really a lot of confidence
in the way we prepare. We feel like we're prepared,
we do things the right way. I think we're going
to get the most out of our ability. And I've
told you a couple of times there's some guys on
this team that galvanize these players as soon as they

(03:54):
walk in the door. So probably no accident, Zach Short.
You can get to know these guys a little bit
spring training, but walk in the door a couple of
days ago. I mean, he was the star of the
game for the base with three hits, a walk, and
a couple of RBIs yesterday with the double down the line.
I mean, he was fantastic. So I think guys play

(04:15):
their best in this environment. And I was thinking about
this yesterday as I watched him on a Sunday. We
typically teams don't do a whole lot on the field
before a day game after a night game, but it
reminded me of a minor league manager that we had
one time, said, Hey, guys, tomorrow, this is after a game.
So tomorrow we've got two buses coming to the ballpark.

(04:38):
Guys who want to come to the field early and
get some early work in, Guys who feel like they
need to get some work in can come on the
one o'clock bus, and the empty bus is going to
come at two o'clock. And I feel like that's kind
of the Astros philosophy is everybody is held accountable. Everybody's
going to show up on that first bus to come
and get work in and hang out with each other

(04:58):
and get better and prepare to win in a baseball game.
And the empty bus right later. Nobody.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
That's the voluntary mandatory thing, right, Steve, Hey, it's you guys,
come when you want. But everybody realizes we'll be on
that first bus, right.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
So Steve with.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
Right exactly, And that's a good thing because his success
begat success. Right. Steve Sparks joins us first weekly visit,
Astros broadcaster Steve, You were around the cages and you
talk to these guys all the time, and you watch
it so closely, and having played it and been in
other clubhouses. Do teams that come from other places know
ahead of time that the reputation is strong culture, strong clubhouse.

(05:41):
You got to do it a certain way of preparation
when you come to play for the Astros. Is that
widely known around baseball that the Astros do do it
different or is it just us being here in Houston
that know this.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
I think everybody around baseball knows that they do it differently.
They're not exactly sure how they want to be a
part of it, and I think guys get pretty excited
when they get acquired by the Astros or the signing
the offseason or free agents or guys that might be hurt.
You know, We've seen this with Brian King, Bennett SUSA.

(06:13):
We've seen guys hurt on other teams, rosters that are
taking off the roster because they need roster space, and
who plucks them other hurts Astros do and they'll rehab
them the rest of the way and take advantage of
something that they liked about these guys, so they're always
on the alert and they do a fantastic job of
acquiring guys that maybe some teams don't value as much

(06:35):
as the Astros might and see if they can get
something out of them. But what they're able to do
with their bullpen and it kind of reminds me about
maybe even drafting plan Sean. When you think about how
well that the Astros develop pitchers, I think my priority
in a draft would be position players early and guys

(07:00):
like Hunter Brown, who they drafted in the fifth round,
rag Getty, you know around that same kind of guys
like that a little bit later on, because the Astros
developed them so well throughout their minor league system. Wait
a little bit and really back comes in of the
transitional layers in the first few rounds.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
Steve, how it's constructed. I'm gonna give you the worst
possible environment. I guess maybe it isn't because of the
way they're playing that none of these guys that are
injured make it back this year. I'm going so hyperbolic,
it's crazy, but they don't. Jordan doesn't quite get it.
He makes it back, but he's not the same. Still
working on rehab for Garcia and Javier. Maybe you get Aragedtty,

(07:42):
you know, the Maybies, but this is what you this
is what you got as we sit here July seventh.
Why aren't they a World Series team? I know that
it's hard to sustain this, but they've sustained it for
ninety of them or right around there. Can they do
this consistent and do this all the way through this thing, Steve?

(08:02):
With the roster of the way it's constructed, not counting
on anybody coming back, the rest is a bonus? Can
they And why?

Speaker 2 (08:11):
Well? I might have these I might have to bese
numbers wrong, but I think they're twenty four and eight
since June first. That's a lot without a lot of players. Right.
They're also I think thirteen and two maybe against the
current division leaders around baseball. Thirteen and two, I mean,
that's rediculous.

Speaker 1 (08:30):
They dominate one run games to right, Steve dominate them?

Speaker 2 (08:33):
Yeah, yeah, I think yeah they do. So they've got
the best mark in that area too. But the record
against the division leaders right now is eye popping, and
it's been done a lot more lately. Right, the Phillies,
the Dodgers, We've seen that a lot here just recently,
and it's not like those teams came in limping. You know,

(08:54):
those teams were playing pretty good baseball coming into this
and the Astros took care of them. So they're pitching
really well and they're getting more production out of more
guys in the lineup. Now. Al two B is really
starting to round in the forum, and we knew that
was only a matter of time, but Parade has been fantastic.
Walker's come along, gin or Ds swinging the bat well.

(09:17):
We can go on and on, but once you start
to get multiple guys in the lineup feeling good and
swinging the bats well and not scoring just two in
three runs per game, but you know you're starting to
see eighteen every once in a while, a five and
a six in that Dodgor series. That's when you've got
a chance to go off on streaks like this. So

(09:39):
you know, right now it's just nose to the ground
and get just six more games and play quality baseball
until the All Star break. But you don't want to
put or take the foot off the gas right now
because it's a lot of fun for these guys to
come to the ballpark.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
Steve is an eye rolling or bother you as a
guy with such a great approach to all this, because
it at the times it bothers me. Try it to
let it. But you know, and I listen. I grew
up watching being in la at sc and Oral Hirscheis
are there, and I know he's an opposing broadcaster and
I hold him in high regard. I thought what he
said was kind of weak over the weekend. You don't
have to comment on that part of it, but overall, stever,

(10:15):
you passed. The point is that I rolling for you.
When people talk about twenty seventeen and oh they know
it's a curveball, or it feels like it, you'd think
they knew just the little digs? Are you passed at?

Speaker 2 (10:25):
Steve?

Speaker 1 (10:26):
Does it still irritate you as if they haven't done
their homework the right way?

Speaker 2 (10:31):
Yeah, it's pretty it's eye rolling to me. Yeah, I
don't worry about it, and I don't think many people
in the Astros clubhouse do, and there's hardly anybody left
to really matter it. I think there's two guys that
were on the twenty seventeen team, and it was lay
for Cohlers who bounced back well and it pitched very
well in game one of this series and al Tuova

(10:54):
who dominated. So I think sometimes you just let your
play do your talk talking. Yeah, you know, guys do
a good job of kind of compartmentalizing a lot of
this stuff and just playing good baseball. And I kind
of go back to the one thing that I noticed
the ass do as well as anybody. I got better,
and they prepare very well, and I think they've got

(11:15):
a good staff in there to help guys know what
to look for and have a good game plan against
certain pitchers and certainly against the other team's hitters. So
they continue to do that really well. And a little thing.
We keep noticing a lot of balls hit right at
the Astros fielders, so they positioned themselves pretty well too.
So they're checking off a lot of boxes on how

(11:36):
to beat other teams. And right now, it's a lot
of fun to go to the field.

Speaker 1 (11:41):
Hey, Steve, you mentioned Lance mccullors, and we've seen both
extremes since come back, and rightfully so, hell guys trying
to get back into rhythm. We've seen some ugly and
we've seen some really really good. So if I ask
you who is Lance mccullors, what's the answer. As a player,
I think.

Speaker 2 (11:59):
He's still coming back him a two year absence, and
you know, I think you're going to see inconsistency at times,
but I think he's learning himself. It's a little bit
different pitcher nowadays. He's changed his mechanics a little bit.
But I like the fact that once that the Astros
did get a lead, that he started using his basketball more.

(12:19):
And I told you last week that I felt like
Lancey needed to use his basketball a little bit more,
and I think I think that helped him out in
that last game against the Dodgers. So he still has
plenty of it. We saw him get up to ninety
five in that last game a few times, and uh,
that's plenty, you know. And and continue to pitch inside
and get him off your get him off your spin,
get him off the curve and slider, uh in the

(12:40):
change up. I mean, he's got plenty of weapons to
go out there and pitch very well for him.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
And I love seeing our guy Robert Ford pumped up
with the chip. What'd that awesome? You oe with the
wee kid? You guys have said there going back and forth,
and I loved he he was all over it. And
I love that. I love the approach. That must have
been a fun to send that booth over the world
week brother, be a part of that, you both with
all that fun.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
Yeah, hit plan, I mean, I mean the Dodgers for bear,
I mean, they really have a hard time losing to
the Astros, so it's kind of funny. I mean, that
puts a smirk on your face when you're playing. But
you know, we're just trying to do a good job.
But to watch that the Astro is, the way they
handle themselves over the weekend was pretty satisfying.

Speaker 1 (13:26):
You guys do not a good job, a great job
of not only keeping us entertained, but teaching us good baseball. Steve,
great stuff man. Great to have you back home, and
we'll look forward to to next Wednesday as and hopefully
this thing will continue and get it up to ten
games before the All Star break. That'd be awesome, especially
with the Marinder schedule. Great stuff, Brother, appreciate you, Thank

(13:49):
everyuddy you too. That's great, Steve Sparks. We'll come back
and discuss as we roll along here in the eight
o'clock hour, Dan, myself and Tripoli and you guys. Phone
lines are loaded We're ready to take you on Sports
