Speaker 1 (00:00):
Join us right here on Sports Talk seven ninety Sparky,
Welcome in, Man, Good to have you. Wish I wish
we had seen a little bit better baseball coming off
the weekend. I guess the good news disaster is still
in first place, albeit getting swept in four games by
the A's.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
How are you, man, I'm doing great, Gordy, how are
you doing?
Speaker 3 (00:17):
You know?
Speaker 1 (00:17):
Look, I've been better, right, I mean, getting swept by
the A's. I think I fell asleep in my chair
for the Friday night game. They were getting beat so bad.
But again, you get humbled. I brought up to sean earlier, Steve.
It feels like every season they have a series like
this this time of year.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Yeah, I remember twenty seventeen. It was the same Oakland
A's at that time that got them in a four
games sweep in September, and the Astros got hot right
after that.
Speaker 4 (00:42):
So, you know, I was thinking, it's kind of good
that you something like this might happen before the trade deadline, too.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Gives you a little bit more sense of urgency going
into that deadline. So we'll see.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
You know, everybody, everybody goes to it at certain times
of the season. Tigers and Dodger just going through it
at the same time as well.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
So the Astros just got to get more healthy.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
Hey, Steve, was there when you were pitching and playing
in Major League Baseball? Was there a time or did
it happen every year? I know in football it does
where we'd look back when the season was winding down
or over and say that game or those two weeks
or that series or that half changed us. Meaning and
I know it's along, but there are certain points in
a game or series you look back and say that
(01:27):
was either a springboard for us because we got going
after that and it can be good or bad, or
that's what ended up taking us down because we never recovered.
Do you believe that happens or is this just another series?
Because I thought it was a bit alarming because they
didn't just get beat, they got hammered.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:45):
Well, going back to that a series back in twenty seventeen,
they got outscored by twenty six runs too.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
So the way it happens sometimes it's just circumstance.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
You know, you don't use your leverage relievers in games
you fall behind early.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
I don't think the Astros just need to get the
lead just been so long.
Speaker 5 (02:03):
Eight team straight, eighteen straight. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
Yeah, So you know it falls on both sides of
the baseball in that regard, you know, you've got to
do a better job of coming out and getting to
that other starting pitcher, and that in your starting pitcher
needs to do better too, and I think Robert Valdez
is the best place to start, and he goes tonight.
Speaker 5 (02:23):
Steve, how hard is it?
Speaker 3 (02:24):
I mean now with the injury to you, to your
Walter is one thing, but the severity which seems it's
going to be a little bit longer with Paradis at
third base. You know, this is the old need or
do you draft on need or best player available? When
it comes to the NFL, so do you trade on
specific needs or best available? In this situation third base
(02:45):
now may be something they need and it may be
from right handed power. Anyway that that becomes a little
more urgent for you considering the Paradis injury, I.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Do think so. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
I mean, you've got to fill those gaps. And there's
x expectations of guys starting to trickle in in the
month of August that I think, I think every week
we're going to see somebody new come in and fortify
this lineup or the roster, whether it be from the
pitching side or the hitting side. But right now it
just sounds like you parade. This is going to be
out longer than they hoped, and I.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Think they need to fill that need. And if it's
a left handed bat, you know, from that position.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
I think if it's available, you know, and it's a
pretty decent deal, then you've got to go for it.
One thing that Dana said yesterday, I thought it's pretty
interesting and I've always kind of thought this is when
you're trying to trade with somebody that's not in contention,
you know, there's going to be a lot of bidders
and you're gonna have to outbid somebody and it's going
(03:46):
to really be painful.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
But if you're trading with.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
Somebody that's in contention, and Dana said that, you know what,
we might be.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
Trading with somebody that's in contention. He mentioned that yesterday,
I think.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
You have way less chance of getting ripped off, say,
you know, having to try to outbid somebody, Like you
can look at each other's rosters and say where do
you have surplus and where do you have surplus?
Speaker 2 (04:11):
Do we match up, and it's a.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
More fair deal, you know, and it might be from
the major league roster, but it's more fair because you've
got this area covered a little bit more than some
other areas that the other team can help you. So
I thought that was really important, and I think that's
if I was a general manager, that's what I would
be looking for. That way, you know, if you're going
(04:33):
to keep your eye on the present. Danus says this, right,
I on the present and on the future. I think
that's the best way to do it.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
But it's not. It's not always going to match up.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
Yeah, it's a great point.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
And again, you know, the hope is that you know,
if if Paradus does miss the rest of the year,
you know, if it is just a hamstring injury, that
he'll be back fully healthy, ready to go for spring
training and be healthy all next year. The problem with
that becomes how to I I get through the rest
of this year as a playoff contender with third base
And so that's where a rental makes most sense. And
(05:07):
one of the names that's being fall out there is
your Hineo Suarez, who's you know, we know it's just
crushing bombs out there in Phoenix. But when I read
the CBS Sports Report this morning, Sparky has list nine
teams interested in and it's like, gosh, you just I
don't know if the Astroids have the ammo to get
into a bidding war, you know, and look you talk
about it's gonna hurt. I just I can't see them
(05:29):
training a guy like Cam Smith that they worked so
hard to get in the Kyle Tucker trading. There's just
so many guys you look up and down.
Speaker 5 (05:35):
The Ruster goes.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
It doesn't make sense to trade this guy. So I
just wonder if they even have the ammo to pull
off to make a big move.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
You know, Yeah, I agree, and that would probably This
is just me and you know, it could come back
and buy it, but I'm not interested in losing a
bunch of capital the way things are going right now.
And I know it's just coincidence, but in a few
of the astros last trades, you're thinking of the Christian
(06:02):
Basquez trade, that was William or Reu and Manuel Valdez
to get Verlander, you gave up Bryan Clifford and Drew Gilbert,
and then Wagner and Low Braffido to get Kakucie.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
What are those guys have in common? They're all left handed,
and I think it's just coincidence.
Speaker 4 (06:17):
But the Astros if if shuffled off a lot of
guys that may have been able to help them, you know,
and not have them in a position where right is
Melton is melting going to be the answer. He's the
only guy that's left handed in the orders that there's
there's a few more now and you're looking at Joseph
Sullivan and Bush the catcher in high A. So uh,
(06:40):
but they still they still need some balance in that lineup,
and everybody else knows that.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
So you're gonna have to give up more than you
want to.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Astro's broadcaster, Steve Sparks was weekly visited eight o'clock. Steve,
put yourself in position of the other teams, and you're
and you're looking for you know, some future, but some
pop and the rest of it. Would you would you
inquire about the catching position on this team?
Speaker 2 (07:06):
No?
Speaker 5 (07:07):
You wouldn't.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
No, No, I mean, would I inquire about it?
Speaker 3 (07:11):
Yeah? You know you're you're the you're the opposing team.
You're not the Astros. You're calling up? Yeah, what would
you would you say to everybody.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
I'm asking about everybody who's available, you know, and who
can help me.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
I mean, you've got to be a realist, who can
help me? You know?
Speaker 4 (07:28):
And if you're talking about some fringe guys and I'm
not going to name names, but talking about French guys,
they're not going to help guys.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Win the World Series.
Speaker 4 (07:37):
We're looking for if I'm another team, I'm looking for
guys that help me win the World Series, especially if
it's another contender, Like you know, we're not playing games here,
We're not we're not playing on the fringe.
Speaker 5 (07:50):
Do you believe it's a wild factor trade, Steve.
Speaker 4 (07:54):
If the Astros make a deal, Yeah, yeah, I think
I think it's gonna make it difference. You know, when
you're talking about so many guys, when you're talking about Jordan,
Jeremy pay you coming back, Jake Myers coming back, we
had We didn't get the update on Jake Myers yesterday.
We'll get a little bit more on that as soon
as we can. But uh, there's a lot of pictures
(08:16):
and I for me, you know, I'm still looking at
a maybe a bullpen arm and a left handed back,
you know, and I'm.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
Going out there.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
I know Dan is and uh, he's going to go
out there and get the best deal done for the Astros.
And one thing I do know is I don't think
the luxury tax threshold.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Is going to make a big difference at all.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
I mean, if it's going to mean that the Astros
have a better chance to win the World Series, I
think the Astros will certainly blow past that.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
Yeah, I mean you're basically I mean what it's within
two millions, So it's almost like anybody you add, they're
going to go over it.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
So, especially if it's not a fringe player and it's
a differences you be paid.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Yeah, I think I think Jim Crane has shown he's
got a history of look we got we gotta go
big or go home. If we're gonna do this and
we're gonna make a big move, let's go make a
big move. But it's funny, Steve, you mentioned not getting
update on Jake Myers because that's some people tweeting about it,
and I said, look, Robert Ford gets eight minutes with
Dana Brown on the pregame on Sunday seventeen. Guys on
the al, I mean it's like you can't even get
(09:17):
to everybody, But I was encouraging the other thing go ahead.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
The other thing about that Gordy is part of that
gets cut up too.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
We just don't have it at time on our pregame,
so it'll go on a podcast later.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
The rest of it, but some of it's cut up
to begin with, Well.
Speaker 1 (09:32):
Any more injury, Steve will block off an hour of
nightly programming for you guys to get through all the players.
Speaker 5 (09:37):
Starting Alan from mash That's right.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
But the good news is Steve at least with a
lot of these guys. I mean, I look you, you
would ask me during spring training about Christian Xavier, I
would have said, we're not going to see him at
twenty twenty five. I just thought the vibes were gosh.
I mean, some of these injuries have just taken so
many guys so long to get back. But here we are,
staring there in the barrel. Dana basically says, what arrog Getty,
one more rehab start and he's probably going to be back.
(10:02):
Javier is right behind him, So I mean, this is
a good thing.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
Man.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
You're starting to get healthy at the right time, just
in time for the backstretch of the season, right.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
Louis Garcia is right behind him.
Speaker 4 (10:13):
I mean, these guys are I mean, if nothing else happens,
these guys are on track to come in and help
this team. And you know, to what capacity and how
can they bounce back and all of those things. We'll
just have to wait and see. But I'm staying positive about.
You know what this team's been able to do on
the road lately. It gets good teams. The entire season.
(10:35):
They played great against the other first place teams. They've
just hit a little buff of the road right here,
and I think before the trade deadline and before some
of these guys get hurt.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
That's okay.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
I mean there's still a long way to go, and
I know you're trying to hold off.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
These teams and it gets nerve wracking from time to time.
But that's baseball, man.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
This is this is a this is a long haul
and to stay healthy to begin with, who's to say
that the other teams are going to stay healthy.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
The Astros might be getting healthiest at just the right time.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
Hey, Steve, before we let you go back to this
past series, and not to make a big deal of it,
but it's four games and you've got to see it
up close. And there's some really good young players on
with the A's. There really is. But was there something
that stuck out the most to you that was I
don't know if alarming is the right word, but concerning
in the four games, it's just like, oh man, that's
(11:23):
that was a rock bottom series for them.
Speaker 5 (11:26):
What was it?
Speaker 4 (11:28):
You know?
Speaker 2 (11:29):
For me?
Speaker 4 (11:29):
Sean and I said this, I said this, since the
New York Mets came here in the first home series
of the season, the Astros need balance in their lineup,
you know, and when you get a guy with a
really good slider, you guys see it.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
I mean, it just looks like they're chasing, chasing, chasing.
Speaker 6 (11:47):
One of the big reasons like some people probably talk
about early the Astros swinging counts, it's because they don't
want to see the slider with two strikes, right. And
I remember Griffin Canning that series when the Mets came here.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
He just absolutely dominated the Astros.
Speaker 4 (12:04):
And I just feel like, you know, if they had
three guys in there, you know, Jordan included, they can
go in there and get guys away from getting locked
in with that break and ball. And when you're seeing
the same side guys.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
Over and over and over. You get locked in as
a pitcher.
Speaker 4 (12:23):
On where you need to focus in where that tunnel is,
and you're throwing it over and over, it's more easy
to locate it. And I just think when you get
a lefty in there, you're trying to back door it.
You're trying to get it to the back foot. You know,
it's not as clear as where you need to throw it.
I don't think you get in the groove with that
pitch the way some of these rioties are against dis
Astro's minup. So for me, that's been going on all
(12:44):
year long, and we saw it again against the Eights.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
He is Steve Sparks. Of course you can him right
here on your home for Astros Baseball, Sports Talk seven
ninety and Nationals coming in.
Speaker 5 (12:56):
Steve.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
They they took two out of three against the Twins.
I said, the only thing we don't want to say
tonight is oh Lord. We want to go Oh Lord
is on the mount.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
For the Nats. Yeah, that's right, Brodon Lord's going to
be pitching. But you know what, there's another.
Speaker 4 (13:11):
Lord pitching for the ass and that's Farber, Who's the
thirteen to know and if last thirteen starts, that's so
that's the Almighty right there?
Speaker 2 (13:19):
Right lord?
Speaker 5 (13:20):
Yeah? Yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
If you say Lord Almighty, it means fromber is doing
something good tonight.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
If he happens to walk on water, we're in real trouble,
aren't we. There you go, Steve, great stuff, man. We
appreciate you, and uh, by this time next week we'll
have some I would imagine, some good stuff to talk about,
trade deadline and hopefully health as well.
Speaker 5 (13:38):
Brother, we appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
You're very welcome. Thanks for having me.
Speaker 5 (13:42):
You got it. That's great. Steve Sparks, the one and
only Steve Sparks,
