(00:02):
Salisbury, Old Bright Salisbury, Houston. Okay, let's do this. Sean
Salisbury, there to usc truths, longtime friend shown Salisbury, Brian Lo Lima,
go Lobos. This is the SeanSalisbury Show. Trailing early here at
(00:23):
the bottom of the second inning andthey're losing Game two of the series to
San Diego right now, five toone. Quick start by the Padres.
And man, do we have alot to get into with the Dodgers organization
and one of their players and runsdeep in gambling. It's going to talk
about that a lot this show,as well as the college basketball tournament University
of Houston getting set to take onLongwood. As we wait on that,
(00:45):
but today's the opening day of thetournament. Get rolling with your brackets,
get him in early. Today's theday and jose Rikity, what great news.
Went got the opinion and there isno damage to the UCL and he
takes about ten to fifteen days andthen the resume throwing. That's great news
for the Houston Astros. We willtalk today about that. And as we
(01:06):
inch closer to a week from today, the opening day against the Yankees right
here at home, and there'll beno Garrett Cole or you'd be seeing him
on the mound. But he's gota couple months and he's got to get
himself right as well. Crazy wayto start the season, and especially when
we get to these Dodgers, howabout that and Shoho Tani's interpreter. We'll
get to that story and just asecond, want to get back to Jse
(01:27):
or Ketty. As we go intothis, it obviously affects the local team
with what's going on already and thephone number seven one, three, two
and two five seven ninety. Lotsof questions to be asked today. And
you guys chiming in as well thatwhile we think, oh okay, jose
Er Kety, well, you know, not the front line. We got
to get mccolors back, or when'sJV coming back? This is huge because
(01:49):
of his versatility and only I understandthe initial talk is he'll be back in
ten to fifteen days and resume throwing. And that's a good thing. But
you're going to need every single alarmthis season, every single arm. We're
not going to get five guys, you know, even if they were all
healthy at the beginning, five guysaren't going to start for one hundred and
sixty two games, So it's notso the significance of Jose Air Katy's great
(02:14):
news yesterday. And now moving forward, how are you where are you right
now with the Astros? Honestly, last year stings. You get beat by
a team four hours up the roadand it was couldn't close out at home.
And I would like to think we'reall over those feelings, but they
never go away, right full numberseven one three, two, one two
(02:36):
five seven ninety. They never goaway. Those feelings don't and won't go
away, because well, that wasanother chance of the World Series that we
thought we had here at least we'regoing to be in it. And I
assure you, and this is nodisrespect to the Arizona Diamondbacks. That is
a that series doesn't last. Itlasts about as long as it did with
(02:57):
the Rangers, but the Rangers gotthem. So you know the state of
that that head into the off seasonand going and getting Hater and Yainer DEAs
and making the changes and you know, we haven't even been discussed other than
about the first week at spring training. The Myers having him in there doesn't
I mean, the concerns, thetrust that we're putting in Joe a spot
about Jake Myers. So the everydaylineup feels phenomenal. We talked about depth
(03:23):
yesterday and having a great bench becauseyou know you're going to need those guys
too. Is more ma Resio debaandproved last year. But I'm just curious,
going a week away, think backto last year at this time the
feelings you had. Are they different? More concern heading into this one than
(03:43):
last one because the pitching staff orVerlander wasn't on this team. We were
getting the news throughout spring training thatthe Lance mccullors is going to be delayed
and obviously for a lot longer thanyou thought going into spring training, And
in spring training we thought he wasgonna come out fine and boom, there
you go, and it takes alittle bit longer, and he's obviously waiting
for his return back as well asGarcia. But I'm just where we are
(04:08):
with this team. I understand thenerves of a We're going to get Tucker
signed? Are we going to getBragman signed? So I guess we can
combine both when it comes to theAstros, what are your concerns and where
do you sit as we're a weekaway from opening the season, new manager,
a new catcher supposed when I saynew, but he's been there before,
(04:29):
but a little old but new again, refurbished Jake Myers, hopefully a
bray You here now for a fullyear and now heading in where it's comfort,
comfortable in the astro system. Aninjury riddled pitching staff or banged up.
It's kind of half and half. Some hurt others injured, injured,
you out for a long time.Hurt. Sometimes you play hurt, but
(04:50):
as a pitcher can't risk it.So the feelings of confidence and with a
new manager that I think a lotof people I don't even think that's a
concern for people much. I loveDusty Baker, and I think a lot
of people do. And there weresome people concerned about in game decisions.
The transformation from Dusty Baker to Joe'sspot is seamless, and I think a
lot of people expected that and rollingright into Joe A Spotta, I don't
(05:16):
think anybody's really that concerned. Idon't. Normally, when you get a
new manager, unless it's Bruce Bochi, you pop back in and go win
another World Series. Unless it's BruceBochi or a Terry Francona. When a
new rookie manager comes in, mostpeople be like, man, that's one
of the top concerns for our team. Quite frankly, it's less a concern
(05:39):
than a pitching staff. It feelslike Joe spot has been running a baseball
club, so no concern there. But I'm just curious where your confidence and
feelings of I don't know, anxiety, peace for the Astros and is your
biggest concern right now? Is itsigning Bregman? Is it resigned to the
fact that Bregman is leaving if hehas a great season or not. Is
(05:59):
it the injury? I mean,I think pitching staff would be the obvious
answer, but some may not beas concerned. And since they haven't made
a move with starting pitching staff, maybe they're not as concerned as well.
Meaning to the Astro's front office. We'll hit that it was a great,
great story in great news on thethe article when you read about jose or
Keaty from Brian McTaggart, So whereyou get that information. You know he's
(06:21):
spot on with his information, allright, this show Heyo Tani story,
and it's not fair to lead withthe show, Hey Tony story that's kind
of a cheap tease. It reallyis although involved, and I think this
is going to piss a lot ofAstros fans off because of the barrage of
attacks the Astros got with the gamblingsituation. It's a very odd story that
(06:45):
I don't think it's surprising with thegambling situation. And so when we put
they're going to tease it's o Tani, They're gonna put his name up there
because this is the biggest star inbaseball, the richest player in baseball,
contract wise and endorsement wise. Ithink we're going to get to a point
where, you know, to teaseit and get you go, what happened
to Otani? It's Otani's interpreter. But where does Otani come into this?
How deep a Major League Baseball lookinto his involvement? Now, listen,
(07:09):
I'm not accusing. I'm just givingyou both sides of the story. This
is a beloved, phenomenal kid whois a great baseball player, and he
is the face of this one ofthem, if there's three of them,
he's at the top of the list. Shoe Atani is a face of Major
League Baseball. Matter of fact, baseball globally and no matter where he goes,
he's the king. But now involvedin or at least affiliated to,
(07:31):
someone who's in trouble and has beenfired from their job. Show Hao Tani's
interpreter. Now the reason why it'sgoing to piss ask those fans off because
I'm just going to give you Iwould like to think that sho Heotani is
not involved any other than his relationshipbecause he's there. But I don't know.
It's just what we read and whatwe hear. It's opinion. Now,
(07:54):
I don't have the facts to thisother than what we read and what
they're saying between lawyers. Right, they're not going to give you all the
information, But I get to thisstory, my whole thing. It's kind
of two fold. We'll talk aboutthe story and the depth of gambling and
people affiliated with and heck bj Bickerstaff, Bernie Bickerstaff's son as a coach in
(08:15):
the NBA, said that, youknow, being threatened by gamblers. It's
getting out of hand. This isa deep story. And now is sports
betting rising in different states and comebigger than it's ever been? Does it?
Is? It? Is it puttingplayers, coaches, and people affiliated
with him in more danger than whatyou think, aside from financial danger,
(08:35):
deeper danger. You know, wekid about a well you don't want to
be, you know, dragged atthe bottom of the Hudson River. But
are we going to get to thatpoint with athletes and coaches will hit that.
But shoe Hao Tani's interpreter, along time interpreter, and you know
articles everywhere this uh that. Igot this on Yahoo Sports and it was
Jack Bear, I think, ishow it's pronounced. Shoe Hao, Tony's
(08:56):
long time interpreter has been fired afterbeing accused of a theft. And when
you first saw that yesterday, I'mthinking, what do you do steep watches
and stuff for money out of theplayers clubhouse, you know, out of
their out of the locker room clubhouse. And then you all of a sudden
say, well wait a second. He goes deeper. And when I first
saw it, I was at dinnerand I'm like, see it on TV.
(09:16):
But you can't really you're not hearingthe TV, you're just seeing it.
So he's said to be the magnitudeOtani's interpreter is said to have.
It's I don't know how to pronouncethis for Ippei, but it's Msahara is
his interpreter. He's been fired bythe Dodgers after being accused of a theft.
(09:39):
And then as the story went on, it's said to be magnified in
the magnitude excuse me, of millionsof dollars from the Los Angeles Dodger superstar,
which is show Hey Otani's himself. Now here's what a Dodger spokesperson told
the papers and the media after thishad happened. It said in a statement
West Hollywood Law from Brettler said,in the course of responding to recent media
(10:03):
inquiries, we discovered that show Heyhas been the victim of a massive theft
and we are turning the matter overto authorities. Well there's where this goes
in Major League Baseball. As Ibelieve, I saw Rob Manfred in Soul,
South Korea yesterday at the Padres Dodgersgame. Miss Ohara was recently was
working recently as last night, andbecause he was interpreting after the game in
(10:24):
South Korea for Otani, who gottwo hits and the Dodgers won. So
to replace Missahara, the Dodgers canobviously, and it says, look likely
in house with the Yamamoto, whohis interpreter he brought him along when he
signed with the Dodgers. So forfour point five million dollars that Otani's interpreter
said, Dodgers start paid off afour point five million dollar gambling debt and
(10:50):
that's where things got weird. Sotrying to shed more light on this,
so Tani's camp reportedly presented Missahara foran interview Tuesday night in Korea, where
he claimed the slow Bugger agreed topay at least four to a half million
dollars in gambling dest to pay himoff for him last year. He placed
the bets via DraftKings before meeting Bauer, whom he said he believed to be
(11:13):
a legal bookmaker. He said,I'm terrible at gambling. This is from
Missihara himself, never going to doit again, never won any money.
Missahara said, I mean I dugmyself a hole and it kept on getting
bigger, and it meant that Ihad to bet bigger to get out of
it, and just kept on losing. It's like a snowball effect. And
(11:33):
Otani was obviously unhappyupon learning about thedebt, but agreed to make the payments.
That's what suppose. That's what thetalk was and is. Rather than
giving the money to Missahara himself, the payment was supposed to be a loan
to misahar who reportedly made between threehundred and five hundred thousand dollars annually working
for Otani, with the wires descriptionfilled out as loan. When he was
(11:58):
asked, Otani's camp reportedly and vowedMissihara, who told ESPN the next day
that Otani had no knowledge of thegambling debt and did not make the transfer
at issue. It appeared to beclaimed that Otani was directly involved with the
payments, led to the involvement ofhis legal team Otani's camp. They asked
about Astani's camp and Misihara's claim andsaid that Otani was present and helped move
(12:20):
the funds and that he was goingto be paid back. The spokesperson contacted
Otani's attorneys, who then issued thestatement saying that he was the victim of
a massive threat, massive theft, which becomes a big problem. We're going
to come back, take quick break, and I'll finish talking about this story.
The reason I going so in depthin reading this is because you can't
just say, oh, gambling. Can't just say it's the Dodgers. Can't
(12:43):
just say it's, oh, it'sMissahara. This is far deeper than that.
So when you look at all thedifferent layers, we've got to peel
it back. I can tell youthis. So as we go to break
even though the biggest star in baseballhas an interpreter, and he may not
have done anything, and I'm assuminghe didn't other than try against to be
a friend and prevent his interpreter fromgoing not just deeper trouble money wise,
(13:03):
but you know all the things thatgo along with being half a million dollars
in debt? Orshad I say fourand a half million dollars in debt?
Come back and discuss. Do youhonestly think that if there was any involvement
with Otani in any way, shapeor form, this is just an if
the Major League Baseball would go afterhim the way they went after your astros
or somebody else. Do you thinkthat I don't. We'll discuss seven one,
(13:28):
three, two, two five sevenninety Shawn Salisbury show along with Triple
on a Thursday, and it iswell, March Madness is ready to roll.
Come right back? Does Sean SalisburyShow. Put ours smart ass on
your smart speaker, Google play SeawanSalisbury on iHeartRadio. Jose or keaty ten
(13:48):
to fifteen days. He can resumethrowing negative negative on the X rays and
the results which is positive for theAstros and jose or keaty ten to fifteen
days no damage structural damage to theUCL. That's great news. And uh,
it'd be great to have him becauseman alive as it needed. And
one of the questions going today andwe'll get to your call seven one three
(14:09):
two one two five seven ninety. And I like to pose a few during
shows because I love the involvement inthe passion. I can remember where I
felt last year about the Astros.I was convinced that they were the best
team in the American League. Andremember this was pre verland Er and all
that, and they were gonna winthe World Series and unfortunate didn't in that
way, but they got close. And it's been a dominant franchise and I
(14:31):
remember going in felt really good aboutthem. I feel so much. I
mean, Bullpen's better. I thinkthe lineup. I feel better about the
lineup this year than I do ladthan I did last year. I don't
feel better about the pitching right nowbecause of the injuries. That's the only
reason. And mate, you know, you're wondering where Fromber's head is,
and I think he'll be fine,And where Christian Javier's sustained stuff is.
(14:52):
I think he'll be fine. Ihave to think that because if I take
the injuries and Fromber and wonder ofmentally emotionally, is everything going to be
okay if he goes sideways a gameor two? And for Javier is that
elevated fastball? Is it going tobe that oh my gosh, swinging mis
guy this year? So if thosetwo don't hit and with the injuries,
(15:13):
hell, I'd be and then I'dbe in a state of panic. Of
course, I'm concerned about the pitchingstaff. My question to you is from
last year to this year, thedifference in your thoughts? Are you a
more and nobody's We had a brandnew manager here who's been in baseball for
a while and deserve this opportunity. Most of the time you'd be saying,
rookie manager, man, what arewe gonna do? There's no mention of
(15:33):
concern about Joe spot in this city, which is a great thing coming replacing
a Hall of Fame manager. It'sphenomenal. That's no concern by anybody.
That's gonna be that's gonna be fine. Health is an issue on the pitching
staff. So where's your confidence.I can remember from last year to this
year how I felt, and Ifelt better about the lineup this year,
(15:54):
better about pitching going in last yearthe question now, and I feel better
about the bullpen this year. SoI guess you could say I feel a
little bit better about the team thisyear. But the pitching staff, the
starting pitching staff's a concern. Andwe're gonna get to the show Heyo Tani
story, and I mentioned about thegambling. I'll finish reading it because it
is not the whole story, butI'm trying to. There's so many layers
(16:14):
to it. But I can tellyou this, regardless of show Heyo Tani's
involvement, and I love the guy. I don't know anything how deep this
goes, but I can tell youthis that Shoho Tani, regardless, he
will never get treated like the Astrosdid. I'm sorry, I'm saying the
Astros there here. It's not apout thing. I don't be like Oh
woe was me. They made theirbed, they've slept in it. But
(16:37):
when do you let it go?But I can tell you this, do
you think Major League Baseball wants anythingnegative about the best player and quite frankly
the most popular player globally in MajorLeague Baseball? There won't be one single
thing other than recouping his money. But when you he he's sixty five million
dollars endorsements a year. I thinkit was a Sport of Code reported it.
(17:00):
The next close is it like fifteenmillion or less? Is Bryce Harper?
And like Otani's endorsements At sixty fivemillion or so, Per is more
than the other fourteen out of fifteencombined. Plus he's got seven hundred million,
so he can pay the four pointfive million dollars debt. He can
afford it. But did he payit? Was he involved? Did he
(17:22):
know? All those questions are goingto be asked? But you know what,
watch how quickly it's And that's fine, But is it no matter what?
If he's clean, I'm assuming heis. His interpreter's in trouble and
got fired from the job. Butjust to be affiliated with it, major
League Baseball is not going to punishthat star, no matter what the involvement
was, unless it was hand tohand cash for him making those bets.
(17:42):
You can't bet on baseball, butyou can bet on other sports as a
Major League Baseball affiliation because even theinterpreter, he also falls under the Major
league rules as the interpreter, andhe was making between what three and five
hundred thousand annually with Showy Antoni. We'll get to the rest of the story.
Let's get to the college man.Brian Lilima is on the line.
I imagine he's at the airport. Are headed to it? Brian, what's
(18:03):
up brother? How you doing?Hey Sean, first time, long time.
Oh, nice to talk to you. Yeah, Hey, do you
know anything about Bobby Be's Uh no, the Montreal Expos. Are you at
the Where are you at the airport? No, I'm actually at the gym
(18:23):
this morning. Oh had to call. You're that guy. You're the guy
who calls in. You probably gota tank top on, selfied out nut
huggers, like really really two sizestoo small joggers. Every time you make
a lift, you're yet and thenyou're over there in front of that damn
mere snapping selfies, right and kindof presenting your calf. Is that what
(18:45):
you're doing? I mean, I'mtaking a page out of your book this
morning, so yes, absolutely.I just want to know. I've been
listening to you guys this morning.I just want to know when you're going
to hit on show, hal Tonymake it an interpreter of the ball guy.
Don't start, don't don't hot takethis, don't don't hot take this.
(19:06):
Don't be a bitter fan already.No, no, no, I
love but percent made his interpreter ofthe fall guy. No bookie, Let's
let the guy just rack up fourpoint five million dollars worth of bets and
debts. Well, see here's here'sthe deal though, and you make it.
That's a great point. But Idon't think it's the Otani part of
them for it, because you canif he's paying him, you could sneak
(19:26):
around that with Otani. I mean, you could sneak around your boss doing
that. But when it gets toa certain level, I don't know any
gambling debt people, at least likebookies on a on us because it's obvious
that Otani's, first of all,the guy didn't know how to bet games
away from baseball apparently meaning his interpreter. But miss Aharr but also, what,
bookie, do you know the deal'son a smaller level. Well,
(19:47):
four and a half millions is notsmall, but I'm sure when it started
on DraftKings it wasn't you know? There's those limits where you can go.
What which one of them allows somebodyto get four and a half million dollars
in debt? That's not a regularbetter in the past, you know what
I'm saying, regular gambl Exactly. That's the problem that bothers me. So
what my theory is, and thismay be a little hot take ish,
but what my theory is is thereason I got up to four and a
(20:08):
half million dollars is because whoever thatbook he was knows that it's Shoe hal
Tani's bet Oh it's Shoe hal Tani. Yeah, sure, I'll let you
bet a million because he can payit. Also exactly because he knows he
can pay it. Now if theinterpreter was doing it on his own.
Okay, it's a different store. But I heard you earlier saying that this
thing has so much levels, somany different layers, and there's so many
(20:29):
things to read about. But alsoand I'll leave you with this as I
get out of here and getting readyto hop on this flight. After this,
Jim Stash, you know, maygo on to the sauna and see
if there's any Sean Salisbury buddies. And you know what I mean, Well,
you're the only guy that I knowthat puts your hand on another guy's
thigh in the sauna when it's justyou and him. I mean, but
who's counting? I mean, yeah, who's keeping score? But who's keeping
score? Exactly? I think thatshoe Haltani got a couple of hot tips
(20:52):
on an over under of Mike Troutdays on the IL when he was with
the Angels. That's how the deck, that's that's where you're going, And
he said, I got the overtake the over on the Trout thing.
Hey, in serious? Do youreally think? And I'll let you go
on this because that's another question aspart of it. Do we first off
two layers? Do you think ifShohil Tani's involved any way in gambling?
(21:15):
If I put an if on it, well, major League Baseball come down
on him. Or will this beraked under the carpet because you can't have
that superstar in trouble. This isgoing to be raked under the carpet because
of how global sho Heal Tani isMonney Brother money. Yeah, man,
you can't let your international star, the face of baseball, be in trouble
for this. I mean, there'sa dude. There's so many different things
(21:37):
that have happened over just the lastweek or so with shoe Hill Tani.
Yep, like he debuts his outof nowhere, his wife, his longtime
interpreter gets busted for gambling, andfour and a half million dollars is his
interpreter was in the dugout yesterday morningand sold South Korea. Like, there's
just so many different things. Andhe addressed the team yesterday too, Brian
saying a story was coming out.His interpreter did, Yeah, I don't
(22:00):
know, man, there's so many, so many different layers. I have
no idea what's gonna happen. Ijust think it's a little sketchy. Uh
just how and again, how doesan interpreter in your in your butt?
Are you, sean if you gotseven million dollars in the bank, are
you gonna let Sambo one of yourbest friends have access to four and a
half million dollars. But I'm not. I'm not letting anybody but me have
(22:22):
access to four and a half milliondollars if it's in my bank account and
without knowing, Hey, what'd youdo with that money? And you make
a great point, and I thinkthat this is something worth talking about.
First off, you can you canlisten whosh. I mean, you know,
Chris Carter said once at a rookiesymposium for these players, the stars,
(22:42):
when they're you got to have afall, guy, That's what Chris
said. Now, I don't knowif this is true. Yes, but
oh you did. Yeah, Ididn't see it. Lest I didn't get
on the internet other than to readthe stories this morning. I can tell
you this. So and that maybe true. It would be easier,
wouldn't it. I mean paying payingyour interpreter to go away. It's still
paying him on the side. Sayhey, listen, I'll find a new
interpret You've got it. You gotto take this fall for me. The
(23:03):
curious thing though, for me,is how do you, like you said,
if you're rarely, are you lettingsomebody that that's an amateur gambler get
four and a half million dollars indebt? So somebody had to know he
was affiliated with somebody meaning Otani.I don't know if it was a Tani,
but I can tell you this.If he does, this story is
going to get deep layers. AndI still think he plays baseball without having
(23:26):
any any damage done to his reputation. I do by maay, I'm talking
about my major League baseball. Yeah, Bob, Bobby Manferd is not going
to do a damn thing to showupon And we both know that that's such
a weird story. But if youlook deep, if you if you if
you don't turn the other cheek becauseit's shoe Heotani and take a deep look,
it sure is awfully curious. Let'sjust put it that way. That's
a lot of money for an interpreterto be spending, and you not know.
(23:48):
We'll discuss man. You guys wantto take you out a breaker,
You got it. Go ahead, man thows to break and we'll come back.
Shoul more grateful that Jose Arkidi ishealthy. We'll come back talk about
shoe Hayotani. Go ahead, no, no, go dude, this is
your matter of fact. There you'reyou're not coming back here because there'll be
somebody in your seat, so goahead and finish your last show. Uh
WHOA where'd that covering? That's athat's a new layer is bullet? Now?
(24:15):
That seats waiting for you stays emptytill you get back. So take
us to break and be safe.Text me over the weekend, Hey what
do we got? What's up next? And you're talking? Yeah, we'll
take the calls too. We've alltalked tose A erkities health, and we're
gonna talk gambling about show Halo Tonyand take their calls. So it's all
on you. Is show hal Tania low key gambling attic? We discuss
(24:36):
that next right here on the ShawnSaldbery Show. It is Sports Talk seven
ninety going non stop, sewn withformer QB Sean Salisbury. The great news
is and Brian McTaggart a really goodarticle on it. Jose or Keaty the
X rays MRI I negative on au c L A structural damage ten to
(24:59):
fift teen days. He can resumethrowing. That's great news, especially for
this team. I asked the questionaffiliated with these astros, is I remember
what I felt better about last yeargoing into the regular season A week away
now? And how I feel thisyear, I think healthy. I think
this is a better team. Butthe starting pitching staff right now, you
(25:22):
cannot say that. I can tellyou the batting orders better, the catching
positions got more offensive pop if they'rehealthy rating. We've got guys who see
career years on their mind for contracts, like Bregman and even a Kyle Tucker
who obviously won't next year, butyou still want to put up those big
numbers for the big money that yousee these guys getting. So where are
(25:44):
you with the astros and that thoughtwe're gonna take your calls immediately here and
then the show Hey O, Tanyawill finish reading about and then you start
to see the layers of this. It's a long. It's a long.
You can't just say, oh,yeah, are gambling his interpreter. There's
money involved, there's it's a howdo you or do you not knowing?
I'm gonna lean on you guys.Uh, do you think that that they'll
(26:06):
follow through with this because he's astar. Do you think that there's any
ties to Otani being the gambler andhis his interpreter being the fall guy?
Is his interpreter just an idiot?I mean all these layers and will Rob
Manford do anything about it? Youdamn well know he's not going to go
in depth? Is it can be? I don't want it to be otani,
But you know, hey, howwe feel about somebody has nothing to
(26:29):
do with what the truth is.And I don't know what the truth is
and neither do you. But we'regonna get a lot of stories. And
I can't wait to hear your guystoday. And uh, obviously the brackets
in our University of Houston Cougar isgetting started. What tomorrow night as they
take on Longwood, but the turnNC to a tournament starts today seven one
three two one two five seven ninety. I think Mike's been holding the longest,
(26:51):
if I'm not mistaken, Mike,Welcome in, Man, what's happening?
Good morning, Sean, Yeah, opening day, Man, this is
my second Christmas there. I knowyou've gotta have to call, so I'm
just time to be brief Astros.Concerns and not not concerns. I'm always
concerned about starting pitching, brother,I mean, we're not We're not in
the days of Gibson and Ryan andCarlton and Mark Meerschell where they just pitched
(27:15):
and it was just automatic. Uhlast year, if you recall, wasn't
just in the playoffs. I can'tsee the Astros losing as many home games
this season. I just can't.Or maybe that's wishful thinking. I don't
know. That's the mystery. That'sjust gonna have to go down. We're
never gonna know why. But longterm, we mentioned Tucker and Bregnant.
I think it's imperative. We signedTucker with his youth. Uh uh,
(27:41):
he's he's got several prime years left. Pregnant, I let him, but
we're not gonna we can't afford todo an eight, nine, ten year
contact with the man, and Ihate to see him go. I'm with
you, but but I can't.I can't see him doing that again.
The starting pitching, it's well,Razors have some starting pitching issues too as
(28:03):
well. I haven't heard much MarinersMariners talk. I don't know what they're
movement is, but you know,we you know the guys, they just
hang through it. I'm not worriedabout a spot. Apparently the Clubhouse eleven
team, yep. Uh, youknow, if we can just hang in
there. In the first two months, we had out two being Alvarez out
beginning of last year. We hungout, we did it. It seems
(28:26):
like the offensive health is healthy thisseason, so I'm looking forward to good
things. I think we're going todo fine. Seoan. I know you're
up against your brother. We'll talkto him. A great phone call,
Thank you very much, my man, and great points. And I don't
have any problem to the hitting ordereither. I said at the beginning of
spring training, my only concern washealth. And if the pitching staff's healthy,
(28:48):
they're the best team in the AmericanLeague now. At the plate,
they don't take a back seat toanybody on any team, and that's Dodgers
included. But when it comes tothis team and the concerns, it has
to be pitching, even a healthypitching staff. I think we're always concerned
about because you thinking, well, look, man, we don't want to
lose the front line start. There'sa lot of ifs right now on the
Astros pitching staff, a lot ofifs, and if we can get those
(29:11):
ifs answered early. And when Isay if it's not how good a guy
is, it's where they are maybeone emotionally one command of the stuff and
his confidence back and then the injurypart. That's it. There's not one
doubt of me that they're going toscore runs and pressure teams. And when
you get the back in the bullpen, it's bingo, bango bongo. Good
(29:32):
morning, good afternoon, and goodnight. Just got to get to them.
We'll come back and discuss in asecond. But Randall, you've been
holding. We'll get to you.Well, let's get you now, Randall,
just before we go to break,we got about a minute, my
man, what's happening? Hey,good morning man. You and Brian made
some good points, and this isthe way I feel about it. I
think that there's a whole lot ofgambling going on in sports, and if
(29:53):
they don't hold a Tony accountable forhis actions, then you need the free
peep. And not only that.I was listening to the deal about bicker
Staff in the NBA, about thethreads on him. So I think that
money can get you in trouble, and money can keep you out of trouble,
(30:17):
like the old ton of situation. And that's the only reason why he
would stay out of trouble is becauseit draws so much revenue. And once
again, if you don't if youfind out that he's been gambling, and
you don't do anything to him, then free Pete Rose, Hey, I
mean randal. Before you go,let me ask you one real quick question.
(30:37):
If you're talking about and I amone hundred percent with you on that
is because you're affiliated with and it. You know, sometimes guilt by association
hits. And you are so rightabout money to get in trouble, money
to get out, depending on whoyou are. But because you're affiliated with
IT, is that like, uh, what's an accessory? You know on
cop shows you see accessory? Howdo you not know? How do you
(31:00):
not know what you're paying four anda half million? Two? How do
you not know? What happened? Is? I'm not gonna hold nobody in
content investigation. But the thing aboutit is is that one day it'll come
out because the betters, those whoare that he's betting with, somebody is
gonna tell one day, write abook or tell all books. It's gonna
(31:22):
it's coming out. And the thingabout it is is that it's it's and
these players they're gambling, just likethese guys in the NFL. You you
just slap them on the wrist forgambling and let them play again, if
you're gonna let other peoples make itfree Pete Rose, and I'm not,
(31:42):
I'm not. I'm not condoning withPete Rose. Did I know what you're
saying though, But but my thingis is that you so many people are
gambling and just getting a slap onthe wrist, and then you won't allow
Pete to be placed in the Hallof Fame or give him in kind of
recognition for the for the game thathe played. Because Pete is one of
(32:06):
the greatest, and I'm a fanof Pete Rose, but I don't condone
what he did, Amen, Butthe same punishment should apply to everyone else.
There you go, Randall, thanksbrother, I appreciate you. Have
a good one. Opening day.A week away, we're gonna come back
and discuss and I'll tell you this, and I don't mean this is going
to sound harsh. And I'm noteven talking about Atani. I'm talking about
anybody with gambling and some of theNC to a tournament. You heard BJ.
(32:29):
I'll tell you what BJ Bickerstaff said. I mentioned it earlier. We'll
get into that. Is it goingto take or Randall mentioned many there's more
gambling going I think We're not naiveenough to think that there's not others that
are doing gambling, whether it's aplayer or somebody affiliated in an organization.
Like I said, got of thefacts got to come out, But I
think we all have that perception.I'll tell you this, when's going to
(32:52):
be the day? And hopefully neverdid gambling get so deep for an athlete
or somebody affiliated with it that wefind them with bricks on their feet at
the bottom of a river. Thatsounds harsh, but what's next all that
money? No, A're going afterit. People see it in the news
all the time. You go andyou get in deep. The handslap may
come from the people that employ you, but will the handslap come from the
(33:13):
people that want their money? Someof those things you see on TV are
pretty real. How deep will itgo? And how do you stop it?
And I hoped and pray it nevercomes to something like that that we
wake up one day and say, yeah, you owed me six million dollars
in a gambling debt. Don't knowwhat happened, just disappeared. Let's hope
we never have to see that orhear that. Sports Talk seven ninety coming
back a lot on Otani and hisinterpreter Jose erkeity negative MRI, which is
(33:38):
great and positive for the Astros. It's Sports Talk seven ninety. Let's go.
This is the Sean Salisbury Show.Thursday and Friday are my favorite weekdays
of the entire sports here. Iknow Saturday and Sandy are similar, but
the opening there's just something different, hits different. Today and tomorrow Tomorrow are
(34:00):
the best two in my opinion, week days of sports. And I know
it's it's still even though the Dodgersand the Padres are playing and a Dodgers
lead nine to six in the fourthinning in Game two of this series.
Is even though it's just one sport, I'm talking about that one sport,
(34:20):
March Madness, this college basketball tournament, the NCTWOA tournament. Thursday and Friday,
these are the two best days ofthe Thursday and Friday, of the
weekdays in sports. And I can'twait to get it started. Yep,
fill out your brackets. And thisso Tani story is nuts and his interpreter
and all that money is I've beengoing through it and I'm not going to
go through the whole article again, but it says that Missihara, his interpreter
(34:42):
as you guys heard the first part, me read the first part of it
and try to delve into it.Missahara, his interpreter, says he never
bet on baseball. That's one hundredpercent. I knew the rule. We
have a meeting about that in springtraining and he addressed the Dodgers did the
interpreter Wednesday in Korea before the game'ssaying he has a gambling addiction. The
de the development is a chakra foranyone who has closely followed Otani Missihara's ten
(35:05):
years of Tani's interpretly goes back tohis rookie with the Angels in twenty eighteen,
and Otani brought Misahara with him whenhe signed that seven hundred million dollar
contract with Dodgers. Brought him overand he's by far the richest player in
MLB. As I mentioned, sevenhundred million dollar contract, sixty five million
per year in endorsements, that's figureshigher than the top fifteen endorsement people combined
(35:29):
in baseball, and Bryce Harper secondwas seven million. Now you think about
that. So, all this goingon with Otani and his interpreter, the
question you ask is will they delvedeep? I don't believe it's just as
simple as a guy's a horrible gambler, meaning the interpreter. Now this is
not I'm not putting it on anybody, but the questions are going to come
(35:51):
out, was Otani involved? Didhe know was a four point five million
his gambling debt? And he's gota fall? Guy? Is the interpreter
horrendous? And coming out? He'sgotten fired? And the attorneys call it
a massive theft, meaning they putOtani basically in a bad way. But
Otani didn't pay hand to hand cashbasically, But where does this I mean,
(36:13):
we know where it starts. Where'sit in? I don't believe it's
just as simple. And that's myopinion. And I love Otani. I'm
not saying he's a game, butI don't know if he's ever bet on
a game or any sport in hislife. But apparently his interpreter said he
never wins and four and a halfmillion dollars in debt and Otani supposedly paid
it off, and then he sayshe didn't. It wasn't he did,
he did? He didn't know allthese things. The question is, is
(36:35):
the interpreter, where's the interpreter story? And Otani is the is the man
in baseball. He's a global figure, the most popular player in the world
in baseball, and quite frankly, the question I also ask is if he
was involved or just juilt by associationwhen Major League Baseball dive deep into this,
or is it no? No,no, no, we don't do
this when it comes to certain playersand certain teams, we'd prefer not to
(36:59):
have that happen. Don't know.I'm not putting anybody in saying they did
anything wrong. When it comes toa player like Otani, I'm not putting
that on him, but the questiondeserves to be asked. Hell why wouldn't,
But we'd ask it about anybody else. He's not above criticism or questions.
I don't know how four and ahalf million dollars you're doing? How
you getting that kind of debt? And apparently the intervert said he bet this
(37:21):
on DraftKings. That how you letan amateur gambler unless you knew he was
affiliated with Otani and maybe you knewthat the money was good. You can
you go on DraftKings and and betfour and a half and lose four and
a half million dollars without paying offyour debt take a while. No,
that doesn't happen. It's a littledeeper than that. When you're dealing with
bookies and all those guys out there. I'm not talking about draft kings.
(37:43):
So there's a lot of layers tothis man. And then bj Bickerstaff,
the assistant basketball coach, will getto what he said talking about that,
you know you people getting threat fortheir life. He's at threats. He
goes that hand. Well, we'lltell you about that story too, but
let's get to a couple of calls. We'll come back and hit it hard
in the second hour. Layers ofgambling, and does the fact that there's
more states sports betting going on,being able to bet Baseball players are not
(38:07):
allowed to gamble on baseball. Theyare allowed to gamble on and anybody affiliated
with baseball, but they can gambleand bet on other sports. So where
does this go? Are we gettinginto a point where you're going to go
back in states? It's not gotit. I can tell you this because
the money, it's not. They'renot going to start taking it away from
states. So is the fact thatgambling is legal? Were they doing this
(38:30):
before all this gambling came out?And we just didn't know about it,
or because there's more access to itand are more players involved than we think,
or people in organizations. These arejust questions. Hell, I don't
know the answers to them. Nobodyever approached me about gambling when I played,
but I know times have changed.Maybe they go after the bigger dogs
and the bigger fish with more money. I don't know, but it is.
(38:52):
Is it an epidemic? We'll discuss. Let's get out to u,
Brandon, Brandon, and Kenneth. We'll get to you after the breaks.
We give your time. Brandon, what's on your mind? Welcome in?
Good morning, Good morning. Howare you. I'm doing fine? What's
going on? How are you today? I'm all right. I'm ready for
Astros. Yep, they got ahic what one, two, three,
(39:13):
four, five? I think sixmore spring training games. I'll end that
on Tuesday and be ready to goon Thursday against the Yankees, which is
a week away. Man. Yeah, I think we're all excited and a
little bit. There's a lot ofquestions to be answered about the pitching staff,
and I think we're all excited, man, And I'm glad you are
too. And I sang what's wrongwith the kinie he's got. His elbow's
(39:36):
been sore. But it's good newsbecause he doesn't have to have surgery.
There's no structural damage, and inabout ten to fifteen days he should resume
throwing against So that's good news. It's really good news for the astros.
Okay, that's what I need.Okay, buddy, Yeah, you and
me both enjoy We'll talk to youthroughout the you know, the week and
the rest of the weekend next weekand get ready for the season. We
appreciate you calling, Brandon. Thankyou very much, and have a great
(39:58):
day. All right, it's talkseven ninety, get to all our collars
seven one three two one two five, seven ninety. I'm curious for your
thoughts on the gambling, not ifyou want to legalized in the state.
I know that's a hot button herein sports betting, but what are where
is it going? How dangerous anddeep is it? And in the Dodgers
situation, is it just as simpleas an interpreter being a horse's ass better
(40:20):
and getting four and a half milliondollars in a debt when he's making between
two hundred and fifty three hundred tofive hundred thousand dollars annually as Otani's interpreter.
Is it that simple? Do youturn the other cheek? Would Major
League Baseball turn the other cheek? All these questions and as much as we're
not, we're not bearing anybody orstints sending them to jail because we don't
know. But it's a superstar andOtani. You know, I don't know
(40:45):
him from Adam other than what I'mwatching. He seems like a phenomenal guy.
But you can be a phenomenal guyand still be affiliated with something maybe
you shouldn't be. I don't know, and I don't know if it's just
the interpreter. There are so manylayers. Are they going to dig as
deep in this as they did twentyseventeen? What'll be the difference? I
think we know that answer. SportsTalk seven ninety KBM Houston ATV, the

(41:35):
Sean Salisbury, there to usc true, longtime friend, Shawn Salisbury,
Bryan l Lima, go Lobos. This is the Sean Salisbury Show. Allegedly
not involved. Allegedly the interpreter didnot bet on baseball, and you are
allowed, whin affiliation Major League Baseballto bet on other sports, just not
(41:57):
baseball. Now, the question they'regoing to be asked was Otani involved?
Is he was he being a goodfriend to the interpreter and paying off the
debt he didn't want to give themmoney to Misahara, his interpreter, to
pay off for obvious reasons, ordid it go through? You know,
we could sit here and take twentyminutes to read the entire article. But
it's deeper than this. Is itjust as simple as an interpreter who doesn't
(42:21):
know how to sports bet and Otanijust happens to be guilt by association by
some Well, Major League Baseball delveis deep into this, as they would,
well a trash can situation in twentyseventeen. Or are you always going
to protect your superstar. I'm allfor protecting your superstar as long as he's
doing it right. I'm not allfour when it comes to rules, playing
favorites. When it comes to that, I love Shoe heeo Tani. I
(42:43):
think he's the most unique baseball playerwe've ever had and may very well go
down in history as one of theWell as far as being great at both,
there's nobody who's been able to dowhat he did. I know,
Babe Ruth, none of us gotto see him. I understand how great
he was. But as far asmodern baseball goes, you guys know this
guy's special. I don't know himas a person. I don't know if
he loves gambling on sports. Idon't know if him and his interpreter we're
(43:05):
in on it together, if he'staken the fall, and I don't know
if a tan he's like, wegot to fire him. To me,
I mean that the Dodgers fire himbecause of massive theft quote unquote, as
they claimed make basically his interpreter's stealingfrom him. His interpreter said, I'm
a horrible gambler and I got agambling addiction as he addressed the Dodger all
these does it just stop an endwith a bad interpreter's gambling problem, not
(43:29):
a bad interpreter a bad gambler andhe's been fired from the Dodgers. We'll
hit that as well as Jose arKetty. Just ten to fifteen days rest
and uh, no structural damage toa you shell. Let's get to the
call seven one three two two sevenninety and we'll get to coach bj Bickerstaff,
who's obviously the head coach of theCleveland Cavaliers. And you know when
(43:49):
Tyree Halliburton was talking about UH thathe feels sometimes like he is a prop
for a betting prop. I'll getto what that means. And then the
depth of what people do now inthe gambling world, which tells me it's
far deeper than we think it isacross sports, and maybe we just because
there's more access to it, it'seasier. But if you want to find
(44:13):
drugs, if you want to findgambling association, you can find them.
You can find them thirty years ago, you can find them today. But
it is massive and it's not goingaway. Too much money involved, and
you and I both know that thequestion is who's involved and how often?
And in a so Tawani situation,he may not have done anything wrong,
but are they going to look intoit? Deep? If you're MLB,
do you want that on the biggestglobal baseball star on the planet. By
(44:37):
the way, lookie, BET's justhomered for the Dodgers, as this game
is crazy. In the middle ofwe in the fourth or fifth inning and
the Dodgers were up nine to six, but Bets just homers his first of
the year. Let's get out toKenneth. Kenneth, welcome in, man,
How you doing okay? First, you brung it up about the text

know, with the best show, you should have everything like this here because
some of us get up in themorning and uh, we can't get online,

(45:20):
I'll push that envelope for you,my man. I will because I
think I would like to have atext line as well. I think that
it gets people who don't or can'ttalk. They just a little more action
for them and gives them a voice. I'd love that, good point.
Yeah, especially people like me becauseI drive a truck in uh uh and
a lot of times, man,I can't get caught on the phone.
And the other thing I wanted tocome in on is that about this legal
(45:43):
aspect to this gambling allegation. Andsee this right here, dealing with the
fists, You're dealing with a totallydifferent type of animals, right. And
I hope some of the lawyers listening, because I went to college, I

I can't practice law in the stateof Texas and I ended up in

of this right here is is thatis that if it's on his face like

(52:53):
And uh uh, this just thebeginning. We have these squashed the
surface because they're gonna grow legs. And just one last on this right here.
I know Pete Rose is sitting somewhereright now saying, I'd be damned.
Thanks, Thanks Sean Kenneth, greatpoint man, what a great call.
And I will work on that textline. I don't know how I'm
(53:13):
gonna pull it off, and I'mnot sure how much pull I got,
but I'll go into the big bossand see if we could pull this off.
Because I think we should have onetoo for guys like we wouldn't have
known that. Thankful, Thank goodness, you got to call to day and
be safe out there because we getto I don't know who you drive for,
but whatever it is, it's important. And if you're a trucker and
in that truck all day, you'dbe safe out there. And we're so
(53:34):
grateful we got a great following tripoliof with truckers out there in the morning
who are out there in the world. And it makes me feel good because
you know what, we have thatfeeling when you're driving alone and you're like
okay, you almost feel like you'recarrying on the conversation when you're listening.
I love listening. Those are mypeople. My dad drove a truck as
well before he got into construction. Those are my people. Why because they're
(53:54):
so damn real. I mean,I bet a lot of people are my
people. But I love a grindthey put on and Kenneth made some.
If you didn't tell me different,I would have thought Kenneth was a lawyer.
You know what I'm saying. Greatstuff with a lot of pizzazz.
So Kenneth great point and it fedsif the FEDS are or do get involved.
Oh yeah, you're talking about acompletely different animal. You'd get that
(54:15):
from a cop show, let alonefrom even deeper than that. The question
and when we talk about ifs, guys, the ifs aren't The ifs are
not about did he do it?Or did he? And we got to
put our feelings. Listen, We'regonna come back and discuss this because I
know the initial in this town whenthis story came out, Dodgers Otani interpreter,
money gambling. What's the first damnthing you thought about. I'll tell
(54:37):
you what I did, and it'sit's true, and it's it's not fair
to anybody. My first thought was, oh, will they go after well,
any affiliation with the superstar and aglobal superstar who I love and think
is a great kid and a greatplayer, seems like an awesome human.
I don't know what he does whenhe leaves the ballpark, but I know
at the ballpark and the way hetreats people's pretty damn good. And the
(54:59):
entire had a damn good life withhim and now has been fired. But
my first thought was, Oh,I wonder if the smoke that the Astros
not just the smoke, but thefire that people put on the astros,
that they would put on him,and will that go deep enough to even
if let let's say he was involved, and the ifstro ok to ask,
it's not accusing him, it's justasking the question that anybody to ask is
(55:22):
if he was involved, do youreally deep down think? Let me take
you back to the Michael Jordan situation. All that speculation just disappeared, went
and played baseball, came back.I don't know, but you've read the
story. I'm not telling you thatyou don't know. With the Otani situation,
I don't know. I hope thathe's clean, and I do,
(55:45):
but I know that there's people thatwoke up saying or last night saying,
yeah, they're gonna do the samething they did to us to him.
Are they going to investigate it deepor they're just gonna let it blow,
slide it under the carpet. Iguarantee we thought and yeah, how and
that simple ah, somebody else isin trouble. I know it hit some
of us right, whether it's fairor not, it did. The question
(56:05):
is what are they going to dowith it? Do you say, yeah,
we looked in DP he's clear. Is he cleared already he's playing today?
I don't know, And maybe itis just as simple as an Interpretere
can't gamble. He's horrible at sportsbetting, and that's all. But I
also asked the question four and ahalf million, how much did you know?
I don't know. You guys, tell me, even if you make
a seven hundred million and sixty five, you know you're a billion dollar player
(56:29):
with your endorsements and the rest ofit. Would you know? How close
is he in the off the field? Are they? Are they good buddies?
I mean you could speculate and hearstories from other players. I don't
want to believe that Otani had anythingto do with it. I don't.
That's just the glass house full halffull for me. But I know because
of the team LA and how itgoes and what happened here, there's a
(56:51):
little satisfaction in saying, oh,now somebody else gets the smoke. I
hope it's not him. I hope. I do. I know that that
I'm that fantasy story guy, andI know some hope for all the chaos
and smoke possible. The question ishow deep le MLB go into this four
and a half million dollars. Now, you're depending on who you were with,
(57:12):
whether it's Draft King's a different story. But if you were with doing
this elsewhere, four and a halfmillion dollars will get you in deeper trouble
than a slap on the hand andfired from baseball job. Okay, and
yeah, you know what I'm talkingabout. It'll gets you in a lot
of trouble. And family members aswell as BJ Bickerstaff spoke to this,
(57:34):
the Cleveland Cavaliers not to this Otanisituation, but sports gambling will hit that
as well. Where are you onthis your belief the Otani baseball interpreter?
Is it just as simple as aninterpreter's horrible? Or where you sitting on
this? And do you really believedeep down Major League Baseball wants to see
their star in trouble? Star powermatters man, at least to those that
(57:59):
are making those kinds of decisions. And I hope that, I hope Otani's
not involved. I do. Theproblem is it's awful close to home,
isn't it shoulder to shoulder with theguy on a regular basis. I wonder
how much he did know Sports Talkseven ninety The Jean Salisbury Show continues.
(58:21):
All right, Sean, what areyou hearing out there now? The Salsbury
stakeout Salisbury's takeout on the Sean SalisburyShow. The stakeout is you guys,
it's our number two with Tripoli andmyself. Brian will be back Monday.
(58:44):
The Dodgers gambling situation with the Nizzaharthe interpreter, I'm assuming I'm pronouncing that
correctly. And uh, the Otaniaffiliation to it. Man, there's so
many layers of the onion. Idon't even know where to begin on the
peelback, other than I guess twoquestions loom One is will Major League Baseball
delve deep? Or will they turnthe other cheek? In two? This
(59:07):
gambling situation now deep is it?And do you believe Otani was involved,
that he had a fall? Guy, I'm not saying he had Listen,
I don't want to believe it.But it's just a question asked. There'll
be hot takes all over. It'snot a hat take. A hot take.
I'm answered the question. I don'tknow what I think. If I'm
judging the kid from what I've seenon the field and the way he conducts
himself. You'd say, no,there's a lot of people that conduct themselves
(59:29):
that have addictions. I'm not sayinghe does. And who the hell knows.
That's a lot of money, fourand a half million dollars and there's
about four different stories to it.We'll all peel it back together as well
as Jose or keaty negative MRI allowshim that there's no structural damage, allows
him in about ten to fifteen daysto resume throwing. And that's great news
(59:51):
for the Houston Astros and March Madness. The real part of the tournament starts
today. Can't wait. Got mybracket done? Not sure? You know?
You go through it and you lookback and you start Q and put
the first one up and live withit. And That's what I'm doing.
But gambling big. And before weget to our callers, Dale and Adrian
looking forward to hearing from you guys. At seven one three two one two
five seven ninety bj Bickerstaff reveals personalthreats from gambles. This from from Cali
(01:00:14):
Lawson Freeman and Yahoo Sports as well. He's a Cavs head coach about gamblers,
says sports betting has gone too farquote unquote, He says there's no
shortage of sports betters. This isa story coach JB. Bickerstaff added to
a list Wednesday night when he revealedhe was forced Wednesday night, which obviously
is gambling story with Otani and hisinterpreter came out yesterday after they're five to
(01:00:36):
two. Well apparently they knew beforehandbecause he said a stories coming out,
did his interpreter. But they wonfive to two, and they're in game
two and they're up eleven to eightin the sixth inning in game two,
in the final game of that seriesin Soul Korea, South Korea. Vickerstaff
said Wednesday night, he revealed hewas forced to report NBA threats he received
(01:00:58):
from gamblers last season. They gotmy telephone number and we're sending me crazy
message about where I live and mykids and all that stuff, Bickerstaff told
reporters. So it's a dangerous gameand a fine line that we're walking for
sure. Bickerstaff added that the individualwas found, but no charges were pressed
against him. His comments were madein response to a question referencing Indiana Pacers
all star Tyrese Halliburton's recent admission ofsomething feeling sometimes feeling should I say he's
(01:01:22):
seen as nothing more than a bettingprop. The twenty four year old was
discussing the importance of speaking to asports psychologist as an athlete who often receives
messages on social media regarding his performancefrom sports betters. That's fair and that
happens all the time. Even beforeit was a big people been complaining about
this fantasy as well. Call in. I know, fantasy, it's a
(01:01:44):
form of gambling a different way,but gambling that's where kind of started.
With sports. We got fantasy andit's led to bigger things. It's kind
of been fantasy and it's a greatthing because people pay it. I know
it's not as big a deal, but fantasy's kind of been a gateway to
the sports betting. It really has, and it's huge. Ain't going away.
But I think we've all at somepoint or another had somebody, oh,
(01:02:06):
man, you sucked. You costme money. We were held thirty
years later and Buddy's joke and said, man, when you threw that pick,
I said, yeah, but howabout when I throw those touchdowns?
Do you make any money that day? You clown? And it's my joking
around, obviously, but it's becomefast and furious and rampant, and he
says that not everybody cares to hearhow we feel. This is Tyrese Haliburton.
(01:02:28):
Now to half the world, I'mjust helping them make money on DraftKings
or whatever. So and Haliburton's notall not far off. How many times
have you blamed an athlete if you'vebet on a game or gambled on a
game? How many times have youblamed an athlete for a misjump shot,
misfree throw, strike out at theplate, an interception and thought the game's
(01:02:50):
rigged? That guy just cost mea thousand bucks. I can guarantee you
BJ Bickerstaff is not the only guywho's had calls like that. I can
guarantee it. And it's sports psychologistand Halliburton, who's an all star.
It is true for some you're justyear, You're just can you produce money
for me? I get it.Listen, I'll bet a few bucks on
(01:03:13):
these games, sure as hell.I'm not gonna bet four and a half
million on them, well at leastfor now. And I'm better at it
than Otani's interpreter. But the questionis, and this is, I know
we kid about it, but it'sa deep story. How far is Major
League Baseball going to look into this? Or do you even want to know
how deeply involved a star is?And it may not be involved at all
(01:03:34):
other than his interpreter's a dumbass andspent too much money gambling on something he
doesn't know anything about. Major LeagueBaseball players and people affiliated with professional sports
meaning professional baseball cannot bet on baseball, but they can bet on other sports
they're allowed. Let's discuss. Let'sget out to Dale Dale and clearla.
What's happened in Dale? How areyou, Ruther Sean? How are you
(01:03:58):
doing today? Man? I'm doinggreat, man, Thank you there,
you go appreciate it. How areyou? Man? I'm great, brother,
I'm great. I'm ready to dance, man, ready for the Strews
to have got my broom outs, waiting for the Yankees to come. Hey,
that's right, right, yep.But and this this baseball scandal,
bro, let's see what happens.I mean, you know, anytime Houston's
mentioned in something, it's still goingto dig as deep as they can.
(01:04:21):
It seems like on our sports teams, right, But we'll see what happens
out there. I mean was washe betting on baseball? No, that
the interpreter interpreters a lot. There'sso many layers that his interpreter has been
gambling. There's there's there's been nofinger pointed at gambling on baseball. The
interpreter lost four and a half milliondollars apparently or allegedly. One side of
(01:04:43):
the story says Otani paid it.That he didn't give the money to the
guy because obviously you don't want togive more money to a gambler. He's
been fired from the Dodgers, andthe affiliation obviously begs the question, well,
how much did Otani know? Ishe the gamble? Did somebody take
the fall? All those things thatare it's not fair to Otani because he's
done nothing wrong to date other thanhire a guy who doesn't know how to
gamble and is involved in gambling. But he said it was outside of baseball,
(01:05:04):
and if it is outside of baseball, then there should be no problem
in truth. Well, that's exactlyright. It's not because you're allowed to
in baseball, but with the affiliate, and he's part of once he's because
he's employed by Otani, but he'spart of that organization in the Major League
Baseball clubhouses. He can't bet onbaseball. But if it's other sports,
soccer, football, whatever it is, it is a moot point. But
(01:05:28):
then the dig deeper is okay, does it go more deeper than four and
a half million? And it reallyjust stop on baseball? Is it just
as simple as this interpreter doesn't knowhow to sports bet? So that's what
we're at. Let me let meask you something real quick, is do
you believe that this is rampant inbaseball? And do you believe that if
Otani was involved or gambled outside ofother sports and in baseball or was funding
(01:05:50):
his guy? Because once again, folks, if you're a baseball player,
Otani can bet on soccer if hewants to, Soakin is interpreter. So
it is a moot point if it'sBut if it's baseball, how deep do
you think they'd look at the globalsuperstar if they wondered? Or is this
one of those h we don't wantanything near that. Let's just take his
word for it, delv a littlebit. Do you think they do a
(01:06:12):
deep dive into if it goes deeperthan baseball for the player himself? Man,
I think My opinion is if it'sother sports besides baseball, I think
it's going to be written off andit's going to disappear quickly. Right,
I'm with you, yep, yeah, yeah, But but baseball seems to
have that niche I mean, look, I mean Pete's still getting sa and
so are the Astros. And itwasn't and this wasn't gambling for cheat,
(01:06:34):
you know, for the scandal, but Astros fans, I'm sure like,
well some retribution. Is anybody gonnaget hammered like we do? And you
know Pete Rose is sitting around wondering, huh huh. Yeah, there's no
doubt, yes, right, youknow, I mean one thing with Pete
he did bet on baseball, buthe didn't bet on his own that's the
difference. That's and he did itas a manager, not a player,
allegedly. There you go. Yeahyeah, And I mean this goes way
(01:06:56):
back to you know, the BlackSocks camp. So I think it's time
I gets Yeah, I think Daleand Pete's been a long time buddy of
mine. I think it's he He'sbeen a guest on my show a bunch
of times. I think it maybe time to get Pete rose in again
to talk not just about him,but what he thinks about gambling in baseball?
Is it deeper than we think? And now with all the sports betting
going on, so we'll see, man, But I like to focus on
(01:07:18):
the good man. I would sayit is deeper. I mean, I
don't think, you know, Imean, because unless something comes out,
I don't with the ability to gamblenow, as easy as it is,
you pick up your phone and youcan bet, you know. I mean,
in the old days you had toknow somebody, or you had to
go to Vegas or you know, you had to you know, you had
to have that guy to place abed back in the day. Great point.
(01:07:39):
And you know what happens when youget four and a half million dollars
in debt, right, my man, we we know what happens there.
It's a little deeper. It's alittle deeper. Yeah, Yeah, that's
exactly right. It only takes oneof those punches, that's exactly right.
Hey, Dale, have a goodone, man, no doubt. I
appreciate you, and we'll talk toyou hopefully before the season starts next week.
But it should be great March Madness, one hell of a season.
(01:08:00):
For the Astros and we look forwardto it. Man, Thank you all
right, appreciate it. Thanks, there you go. And I got them
winning the national title. We'll goover that too. And in the last
hour little March Madness Talk. It'sSports Talk seven ninety Adrian Reggie right there,
you guys are up next as thegambling talk. The Dodgers want a
way to open the season. Italways seemed like before a draft or before
the season, something like this comesout. It's crazy, but I can
(01:08:23):
tell you what Rob Manfred didn't wantthis Sports Talk seven ninety. Let the
celebration start. War Sean Salisbury. It's a Sean Salisbury show. The Otani
story with his interpreter, Missahara,is going to dominate the news. The
questions will be asked, was Otaniinvolved? Remember MLB players do not and
(01:08:46):
anybody affiliated with the Major League Baseballorganization. You can bet on other sports,
can't bet on your own sport. So if, in fact, his
interpreter lost four and a half milliondollars betting on other sports, why would
you get fired? But if hedid it taking the money and stealing from
Otani, which they said massive theft. That Otani, who has employed him,
(01:09:08):
and he was making between my reportssaid between what three and a half
a million dollars a year being employedby Otani. That's a pretty good chunk
of change. Brought him with himobviously been with him since I think twenty
eighteen, twenty nineteen, and herehe is seven hundred million dollar player,
the best player in baseball. Ithink we all agree with that. Unique
(01:09:30):
and makes more money and endorsement sixtyfive million a year than all the top
fifteen Major League baseball players combined. So the four hundred to four and a
half million dollars, while a lotof money for most of us, that's
probably tip money for him, butit's still four and a half million.
What did he know it? Wasthere gambling on baseball? As interpreter says,
there wasn't was there hand to handcash? Did Otani fund it and
(01:09:51):
take care of his guy to protecthim? Is his guy the fall guy?
All you're gonna hear all this, and the questions are I'm sure asked
with fans are a little stung bythis. I don't think there's any way
in hell that no matter what thesituation is, Otani misses a game because
of this, and why would heHe's not guilty of anything, but I
know there's some satisfaction now the Dodgersget a taste of what it's like.
(01:10:14):
But I don't wish any of thaton anybody. That the Astros went through
it long enough. You make yourbed, you sleep in it. And
if Otani had anything to do withit, But if you're not, if
it's not illegal to bet other games, I mean other sports, where's the
conversation piece? Is it just thatOtani's a good dude and took care of
his interpreter interpreter is a horrible gambler? Or is it far deeper than this?
(01:10:38):
Four and a half million dollars alot of money. I'd know where
four and a half dollars was,let alone four and a half million dollars.
But I mean, is he guiltyof anything other than being a good
guy Otani? And is interpreter beinganything? Being a turd because he spent
money and costed his boss four anda half million dollars because he's a gambling
addict and he's not any good atit. The layers and how deep does
(01:10:59):
Major League be won't want to lookinto this to see if they did cross
the line, or if his interpreterdid cross the line and bet baseball,
and did Otani know if you're affiliatedwith the Major League baseball team, you
cannot bet on baseball player or anybodyin the front office, trainer, manager,
bench coach. You just can't.Gambling's a big deal. Some of
us like the gamble four and ahalf million dollars. That's called chasing money.
(01:11:24):
But if you know that you've gota boss that's worth about a billion,
maybe you think he's going to bailyour ass out. And if it's
just bailing you out for money, you fire him and move on and find
somebody who's a better teammate, meaning, for Otani, a better friend.
But is it deeper? Those areall the questions going to be asked.
One of our guys, said Adrian. Adrian, if you've got a chance,
(01:11:45):
call on back. I'll get yourbrother. Let's get out to Reggie.
Reg Welcome in man. How youdoing buddy, Hey, Sean,
I have gone one good man.How about you? I'm good Sean.
It goes back to me with somethingyou said the other day about greed or
need and you I go back withyou a long time and you've been against
a lot of this stuff because backin the days, you can remember when
(01:12:09):
the slime ball used to come oncampus and recruit people to blow games and
do it that way. Nowadays, these guys don't have to do all that.
They could go straight through the cellphone apps and all those different things
to do the very same thing. And if you said, over the years,
it's going to always be a problemin every sport, and at one
(01:12:30):
point I remember you talking about howit's going to bring down a lot of
the most prominent names and ownerships inMajor League Baseball or whatever sport it was
at the time, especially for thecollege use. But the problem here that
goes back to, just like yousaid, is greed or need. Those
guys don't need to do that, but they do it for whatever reason.
And even in the entertainment, likeBruno mars Is fifty million dollars in debt
(01:12:55):
in Vegas at the Marade for thesame very thing. He didn't need to
do that, but he's doing itfor either it's the greed or the need.
Whatever it is is going to ruinthe person or the sport. I
just hang up and listen to you, Reggie. A great point, man,
it is, and it's such afine line between Hey man, the
key is well, I don't knowwhat the key is. The sport's gambling
(01:13:18):
and betting. As far as whatyou spend, I know this, We've
all whether it's five dollars, letme talk on a lesser n you bet
twenty five bucks, You lose, and you say, well, let me
double down on this, let mebet fifty to get even, and then
it's fifty becomes two hundred. Youjust got to know your ceiling and your
where you're Is it get to thepoint is it need or is it greed?
(01:13:39):
And when you're chasing money, greedbecomes a problem in gambling. But
it's not going away. This isan age old problem. I'm not telling
you not to do it. Listen, do you think I'm gonna maybe the
timing seems a little too soon, not too soon, because I'm smarter than
Otani's interpreter when it comes to howto pick game, not chase money.
But not everybody can say is anawful thing, And especially if you're an
(01:14:01):
addict in gambling and you're not goodat it and then you start to chase
money. Well, is Otani guiltyof just being a good dude to his
interpreter and bailing him out if hedidn't bet on baseball, bet on all
these other sports, and gave himfour and a half million dollars to get
out of his debts so he doesn'tget end up somewhere he doesn't want to
end up. Who'd he bet itwith? I know the talk was the
interpreter said, DraftKings? Was theresome other deep if you bet four and
(01:14:23):
a half million with DraftKings, accordingto the interpreter, is there ten million
more somewhere else? Is there handto hand cash for baseball? Right now?
It's just simply they say it's aIt was he didn't bet on anything
but the other sports, no baseball. So we'll see where it goes.
And I mean, Otani's not guiltyof anything yet other than being associated with
(01:14:45):
a guy who apparently is not areal good friend and was willing and Otani
being a great friend bailed him out. How deep does it go? And
Reggie right, and I'm going totell you the gambling thing's been going on
for you is just more relevant becauseyou can get to guy soe, you
can gamble so easy. Have youever noticed that guys in debt are really
stupid gamblers or the way they spendtheir money, Hey man, writing checks
(01:15:05):
putting I mean as if it can'tbe traced or tracked. I've never understood
how. Yeah, I men, nobody's gonna find I'm a pro athlete,
I'm affiliated with the team. Andif you're betting it, and if you
happen to bet on a sport andbet on your sport, which is not
the allegation here at least so far, can you. I mean, if
you're gonna be dumb, if you'regonna if you're gonna lose money, be
smart about it. If that,if there is such a thing, I
(01:15:26):
know that's kind of both ends ofthe spectrum. But good gracious. So
I don't know where it's going,but I know that I'm sure Astros fans
feel like, oh, they're notgoing to dig deep into this and see
if it was deeper than just bettingon other sports. And that his interpreted
doesn't know how to gamble feels alittle deeper than that to me. Let's
get to one call before we go. Tom jump on in here, and
then we'll take quick break. We'llget the biscuit and the rest of our
callers what's up man, Hey Man, great show this morning, as usual.
(01:15:50):
I want to dive right into thisSean. You've been in plenty of
NFL locker rooms. There's something onthe wall about gambling. Yep. I'm
gonna leave it to you know whatI'm talking about. I want to go
and I want to talk about PeteRose. He I idolized this guy first
time in the Litle League game thatI walked. I ran down the first
and when I stole second base,I dove in head first. I loved
(01:16:13):
the guy. He should never gointo the Hall of Fame. Shoe was
Joe Jackson. He didn't. Hetook money in the Black Sows Canvas.
He hit a record of hits, and the Black Sox they won the World
Series, but they cheated. Theywere staying gott to be called to a
standard. The framers of our countrycreated a document called the Bill of Rights,
(01:16:34):
and they did that with one thingin mind. They knew that men
were flawed, and they knew wehave to create a document that puts those
men in check. Is it perfect, No, but it's a blueprint.
I'm keeping everybody understanding that men areflawed. Hey, Tom adad First,
(01:16:57):
please I don't know if I don'tknow if a time he bet on anything,
but he's staying now. It's likea guy comes to you and knocks
on your door and he is yourbuddy, you know him all your whole
life, and he gives you ahot gun. He says, Man,
Hi, this gun for me.You gonna take that gun in your house?
H No, I don't know.It's like an alcoholic yep, I
(01:17:17):
only drink beer. Come on,man, it's the stain. It's got
to be protected. And again, like I said, I'll use the Pete
roseman. I feel bad. Man. I want that guy in the Hall
of fame. But you know what, people are disincentivized and incentivized to do
great things or to do evil thingsbecause men are flawed. Gotta hold that
(01:17:40):
standards. That's really all I gotto say, Tom, before you go,
yeah, yeah, before you goreal quick, and I got to
go to break. But give me, give me twenty seconds on this and
and P and I've said this.Pete's want a very good friend of mine.
I love him, and I understandthe mistakes. We've had deep conversations
that I don't even need to discusson here. And I'll get him on
as a guest again to talk aboutthis whole thing and where he thinks it's
going and where it is. Andyou know, there's been some great conversations
(01:18:04):
with Pete, and I understand people'sdisdain for the gambling and what you're saying
one percent. I get it,and Pete does too. But do is
there a time? Do you sayhe served his time? Felons go to
jail, and you know you're notallowed to shoot somebody. Felons go to
jail, they come back out andhopefully the system allows them to get back
into society and work, educate themselvesand do all that, and we try
(01:18:27):
to accept them back into society andand and forgive them over the mistake they
made, as you said, mitor Flaued. Do we do that with
gambling too, what's the difference.I'm a big believer in redemption, yep,
I really am. And I thinkPete has redeemed themselves. And I
believe he broke rules you have tohave. Yeah, we have to have
a standard to hold people too.Your kids, your son wants to play
(01:18:51):
baseball, he's real good at it, but he don't like to do his
homework there's an incentive for him.You want to play baseball, you love
it so much, do your homework. You don't instill that in that a
kid. He's not going to dohis homework and he's not going to get
to where he wants. If youthought the NFL was going to ever,
ask Lawrence Taylor when he was foundout he was on a cocaine to pee
(01:19:11):
into a bottle. Again, you'rejust naives. Then they came up with
the rules to change that. ButLawrence Taylor had to live with that,
and it actually ruined his life.He stayed in at US for a long
time. Look at one of thegreatest pitchers I've ever saw in my life,
So I couldn't he at one pointin his four year career with sixty
two games over five hundred, theyshould have had that kid peeing in a
(01:19:33):
bottle every week. Could have savedhis life, could have saved his career.
But that's not what the system's about. It's about holding people responsible for
what they do. I get it, man, I'm with you at time.
I love it. I know youdidn't. I could tell you you
love Pete as a player, butthe rule was there, and I get
it. And it'll be a longI wish he was in the Hall of
Fame because it's not a hall offame. Maybe tell Pete Rose's story and
(01:19:56):
put a plaque and tell how comeit took so long. I think there's
a lot. But you break therules, you rob Peter, you gotta
pay Paul. I get it,but I hope someday does Pete Rose is
a hall of fame where he justhas to have a bust in the Hall
of Fame. Tom great stuff man, as always, I'll talk to you
tomorrow, brother, Thank you comingright back. You got a brad biscuit
all you guys. Hot topic storywith the Dodgers and Erkeidi is not gonna
have no structural damage, so that'sgood. In smart madness, we'll come
(01:20:19):
back and discuss. I know we'relate, but guess what a lot of
passion hot button topic Sports Talk sevenninety. This is the Sean Salisbury Show,
sales show. That's beautiful. Maybewe thought elbow soreness now is just
ten to fifteen days of Tilly canbegin throwing again a couple weeks and that's
(01:20:40):
great news. No ucl structural damage. Well that's much, very very good
to hear and march Maddess starts today. I'm gonna get to your guys calls
in just one second. As wesaid the O tawny thing. Listen,
you're gonna ask the questions of it. The interpreter lost four and a half
million dollars apparently or allegedly paid themoney. You're allowed to bet outside of
(01:21:02):
baseball. So if he bet outsideof baseball other than being a turd to
Otani and Otani being a good friendand taking care of the bet, apparently,
the interpreter says he didn't bet onbaseball. He knows the rule.
He is a gambling addict and he'snot good at it, and he betted
on DraftKings. I can't fathom thatOtani, who's basically a billion dollar athlete
(01:21:25):
and that will accumulate as the yearsgo on. I can't fathom that you'd
think, you know what, thiswould be smart. I'm gonna bet on
baseball. There's no accusation towards him, but you know people are going to
ask it and they're gonna. Idon't know how dive deep a dive of
MLB will do, because you don'teven want to tarnish your star but as
Tom said, the guilt by associationis now they're going to be yeah that
(01:21:49):
the questions will loom for you.I can't imagine that you would have all
that money, but addiction is acrazy thing for the interpreter. I don't
know Tani's involvement at all other thanhe employed a guy who obviously was a
bad gambler. And that's not agood friend. Your friend. What would
be a great friend in all thisis the dude bails out an interpreter for
(01:22:09):
four and a half million bucks, pays off his debt as long as it
was outside of baseball because he's agood friend. Now that is that's a
hell of a friend. You're notonly saving his pocketbook, but you might
be saving him from some other stuff. And you know what that is.
Now. The other part is ifthey dig deep and find out and the
FEDS get involved in Major League Baseball, dig digs deep and they find that
(01:22:30):
baseball was bet on, Now it'sa different story because then you'll ask how
long you know, why do youfund it that? Now there's some real
trouble. But even if it getsto that point, would you honestly think,
do you honestly deep down. Believethat there's anything going to happen no
matter what. You found out thatMajor League Baseball wants this on their star.
(01:22:53):
I'm not saying he did anything, but can you imagine but if they
find out that the interpreter bet onbaseball, this story goes to all whole
new frigging level. Let's quickly getout the biscuit, Brad. I'm gonna
get you at the top of thear, so be patient, please,
biscuit. What's on your mind today? Brother? Welcome in. We got
about a minute or so. Myman, Hey, well, let me
let me jump real quick, Sean. The first thing, Man, enough
(01:23:14):
is enough? Man? What wasit nineteen ninety eight? Come on,
man, let's get Pete in thehall. Man, enoughings enough. I
mean what we had a dude infootball with gamble football would sit out a
year? Come on, man,Yeah, that's a hot button topic.
I'm with you. I'm gonna gethim back on and we're going to talk
about that and this, I promiseyou, right right, Sean, b
(01:23:35):
having like a bracket challenger with thestation or whatever you know we have in
the past. Biscuit, I'm notin I didn't sign up for the bracket
Challenge. I'm actually on Dan Patrick'sbracket challenge that he's doing it, so
they do have one on Dan Show. I don't know Triple Le did we
pull one up there? I knowwe did last I'm not sure if it's
up. I didn't get involved init. So if you, if you
(01:23:56):
go to the station's website, itwill be on the I'm not sure,
Biscuit, I'm really not, butI got mine filled out in in front
of me, so I'm ready togo. Okay, Well, I got
I think it's gonna be a lotof upset. I think it's been this
year in basket college basketball. Man, if you you recall, man,
there's a lot of teams getting upsetby teams on the route, and it's
it's gonna be a lot of it'sa lot of parody. I guess yea
(01:24:19):
biscuit, I got set. Igot St. Mary's, I got Saint
Mary's, McNeese State, and JamesMadison and Creighton all in the sweet sixteen.
Those four teams, I got allfour of those in the sweet sixteen.
Of that are not blue blood programs, but give me your final four.
My final four, I got uof h O Produe, and I
(01:24:43):
got Iowa State over Yukon State overYukon. And what was the other one?
You got that other bracket's next,North Carolina, Baylor, Arizona,
Arizona. I got Arizona. Youknow what. The only difference we have.
I got Yukon, Arizona, Houstonand per Do and I got University
of Houston beating Arizona in the final. And I got Yukon to get to
(01:25:05):
the final four. I got Yukonbeat in Iowa State. So we're only
one team off, brother, sopretty close. And I got a bunch
of upsets in the middle part ofthis tournament as well. I'm with you.
I got Oregon upsit, and Igot Charleston, I got like in
Sanford. I mean, I thinkit's gonna be a lot of US sets
in the first two rounds. Idon't disagree with frand Canyon or whatever.
(01:25:27):
It's a lot of you know so, but it's gonna be interesting. But
uh, like you say, man, I get Pete in the hall.
Man, come on, let's dothat, man, and let's talk tomorrow
on here. Brian will be outtill monday, and we'll get an idea
what this first first day, looklike man, I hope you enjoy it,
my brother, I appreciate you,Yes, sir, all right,
that's Sports Talk seven nine, Topof the hour, next eight o'clock.
(01:25:48):
The Otani situations not even fair,that's a that's unfair. I know it's
a hot tease. The Otani interpretersituation. How deep does it going?
Was four and a half million?Just bet on non baseball if it was.
This is a moot point, hasno legs to it. The question
is does it go deeper than that? Sports Talk seven ninety kd E Houston,
k TV HD two Houston, myheart radio station. How about the
(01:26:11):
masts as a rocket. This isSports Talk seven ninety, your home for
your home teams, driven by thatclassic elite to Bwick GMC Studios for the
elite car buying experience. Salisbury obSalbury, Houston. Okay, let's do
(01:26:34):
this. Sewan Salisbury to usc truelongtime friend, Shawn Salisbury, Ryan Lima,
go Lobos. This is the SeanSalisbury Show. One to one and
then they'll head back home and getthemselves ready for next Thursday or whatever their
(01:26:54):
opening day is. I believe it'sThursday as well. I know that's I
think that's everybody's opening day, butI have to go check. If if
it's everybody's opening day, then I'mnot sure. If the Dodgers have any
games between now and then, maybethey do it or so, but it's
it's today. The focus is onuh Otani's interpreter and how deep does it
go if he bet on anything outsideof baseball, it is legal, and
(01:27:16):
it's a mood point. The questionis was it just baseball? And where
does Otani? How deeply involved toseeing he's Was he just being a good
friend and take care of his interpreterwho's been fired by the Dodgers, And
obviously legally they'll look into what's goingon. But if it was in baseball,
and then this is different story. If it was outside of baseball,
even if Otani bet on soccer outsideof baseball, you're allowed. If Otani's
(01:27:44):
interpreter bet on baseball, the divehas to be deeper. You're gonna have
to put on your dog on yourfresh air mask and get under it and
dive deep and scuba dive take lessonsto go as deep as that would go.
If the interpreter bet inside of baseball, which he said he didn't,
and he said he had lost hisfour and a half million dollars on draftings.
Let's get out to Brad. Brad, you're up first on Sports Talk
(01:28:04):
seven ninety. How are we doing? Man? What's up? Uh?
There's got to be something missing, you know. Did he let him borrow
that kind of money knowing that hewasn't going to be able to pay him
back? Did he take his debitcard? Did he have his own credit
card? But then you got toI just don't get it, you know.
(01:28:25):
If I was making five hundred thousanda year, he's been in the
lee Otani about not quite seven years. The guy making five hundred the interpreter,
what do you don't have any bills? You spend it all on something
missing? Here? Hey, Brad, let me ask you though, Are
(01:28:45):
you bothered or is is it justkind of like is it uneasy for you
because you are Like if his interpreter, bet On if Otania, said,
hey, man, I make I'ma billion dollar athlete. Now they fired
him, so obviously, oh Todd, this somehow there's betrayal. Right,
an interpreneur that was making at leastreported between two fifty or three hundred and
a half a million bucks a yearemployed by Autono, no matter what it
(01:29:09):
was. If it's not even gambling, if that's coming out of Otani's account,
if he stole from it right right, yes, yeah, that they
got to investigate that because on theguys salary alone. You know, if
I was I had a gambling well, I guess I can't speak for myself,
but maybe I'd gamble like thirty thousanda year and knowing I'm making three
(01:29:30):
to five hundred because I still wantmy money in the bank. I mean,
you got to be absolutely stupid tobe gambling your whole income away.
That's that's that's addiction. But Brad, let me ask you this now.
And I'm just I'm throwing this outthere. I don't really know how I
feel. I mean, if hebetter, if he if he bet outside
(01:29:50):
of baseball, which you are allowedto do if you're a major league employee,
major League Baseball employee player or organizationallyyou're involved, you can bet on
it another sport. But my thingis if he did bet four and a
half, if if Otani gave himthe money said yeah, dude, here
you go bet. But if it'sin baseball, if he gave him the
money to bet, is it enablingit? If yeah, that's my point.
(01:30:15):
I'm just saying, if you know, because people are gonna ask the
question if he gave him the moneyto bet, saying, oh, you're
going to gamble? Is it onbaseball? The fact that you're enabled to
hoping it's not on baseball? Isthat a problem. If the guy stole
the money and he had power ofattorney, I don't know how he'd get
the four and a half other thansomebody in Otani. You know, don't
just it's not two dollars maybe theOtani it is, but four and a
half million dollars in debt, evenif it's Otani's bank, or they gotta
(01:30:40):
let Otani know, Hey, yourdude, your your buddy's in trouble.
He wants to know if he canhave four You know what I'm saying.
If Otani's taken out of his countright and the guy check, there's no
law against that, and they're sureas hell is no law and no rule
problem against him giving a guy moneyor paying off his debts to Draft Kings
allegedly because that's who he said hebet with. If it was not on
(01:31:02):
baseball. That four and a halfmillion dollars that was gambled away should be
easy to prove. I mean,if if he did it online, you
got to prove it. So ifit's outside of it's just the uncomfortability of
a player having a four and ahalf million dollars that he alone or whatever
it was. Some said it wasalone, I mean allegedly read that in
an article as well. But ifhe bet outside of baseball, isn't a
(01:31:26):
moot pointer? Does it? Say? Wait a second, now, they
called it massive theft. That's whatthe quotes were about the money taking from
Otani. But the question is ifhe stole it from him. It's one
thing like I went into his personalsafe. Hell, I don't know,
But if Otani allowed him to giveit to him to payoff debts, is
that illegal? Is there a problemwith that or are you just it's too
close for comfort because baseball? Thenyour thought process is, well, there's
(01:31:48):
no way you just been four anda half million on other sports that is
there? Is that your thought processright now? Brad? If I knew
my friend was making three to fivehundred thousand year and he started getting asking
me to I'm thinking right away. There's something wrong. Man. Your money's
your money, My money's my money. You're making it ain't like kd E

I knew my friend was making threeto five hundred thousand a year and he
started getting asking me to I'm thinkingright away, there's something wrong. Man.
Your money's your money. My money'smy money. You're making it.
Ain't like you're not making any money. You're making money. So I'm not
(01:38:25):
you do your thing, Let medo my thing. I'd be checking my
account out. I'd say, youknow, there's a point you got to
just draw the line. I mean, especially money. Yeah, you can't.
Hey, why do you need thiskind of money. You're making three
three and eighty thousand a year. There's no way you need to cut something
(01:38:45):
that's called addiction. Brother, Yep, I'm with you, Yeah, Brady,
That's why I asked. Yeah,I'd say I would have Oh,
Tony can't be like that. Hecan't say, oh, here here's money,
here's oh you need more, arehere and this five years later?
Here I would have something ain't addingup, Brad, great stuff. Man,
(01:39:06):
appreciate you, man, thanks foryour insight. And uh. And
there's gonna be so many different pointson this is. And the truth is
if you're if you did pay offhis debts, even if you're Otani,
you probably had to say how deepyou better put a lot of trust in
somebody and the guy ends up gettingfired. If you're gonna get four and
half million dollars and take his wordfor it that I didn't bet on baseball
(01:39:30):
and you got the best player inthe world. As you're you're the interpreter
for you've probably got some insights thatothers don't have. Like, man,
he's playing today and he loves he'stalking about how he loves itting against this
picture. I don't know as wesit, the interpreter says, one did
not bet on baseball, so it'snot illegal. The question is the massive
theft. Did he just steal themoney? Did Otani give it to him?
(01:39:54):
Did he not pay it back?I mean that's where this when it's
quote unquote massive theft, what doesthat mean in this big If if Otani
knew the money was coming, heknew it was going to his guy to
pay off his debts, did hethat's not theft. That's just Outani having
too soft a heart to pay aguy's debts to prevent him from bigger trouble.
But if the guy stole it fromhim, or had his account number,
(01:40:15):
or spend his debit card to putit on a croud, whatever it
was, it's a bad look.But he's not guilty of anything if that's
all he did, other than apr move, if he didn't bet on
baseball or wasn't affiliated meaning Otani withhis interpreter. But I understand when you
give money to pay off a debt, you know, pay a debt off
to a gambling company or person, the initial thought is, oh, he's
(01:40:38):
involved too, that's how we doit. But he the interpreter has been
fired, and Otani apparently is fourand a half million dollars. Uh,
less than the wallet for a billiondollar guy, it's still four and a
half million dollars. I wonder howdeep this goes? Is that if it's
just a bad gambling guy who youthought was a friend and you were his
(01:41:00):
boss and he did you like that, well, then that's just something you
got to choose better friends and betterinterpreters is the problem. But if it
goes deeper in that, and Iimagine baseball has to know if there was
any money bet on baseball, that'swhere this whole thing comes. Was baseball
bet on by the interpreter? Andhow much did show? Hey o Tani?
No, oh, Tani's not goingto spend one day on a suspended
list, and he shouldn't right now. He didn't do anything wrong so far
(01:41:24):
other than be kind with more thana half million dollars. The question is
was there more involved? Let's quicklyget out to who was a Terrence?
You were up next and Chris andGill we'll get you after the break.
Terrence, what's on your mind?Man? Real quick? We got to
go to break in about forty fiveseconds. Hey, no, I was
just saying that isn't Draft Kings Likeif you're if he paid four million up
front, that means he was involvedwith the credit line of a bookie or
(01:41:45):
something. Right, Like you said, as long as he wasn't betting on
baseball, no big deal. ButDraftKings, I think you have to load
your account. So he was payingit for him over time, is what
I'm thinking. Now almost sets away. It almost has to be right.
You can't because if they get onthose I know there's different limits for But
(01:42:06):
isn't there an a certain thing ifyou're betting on DraftKings, isn't there a
ceiling on what you can bet? There's that And you know, like Dave
Portnoy, like when he bets hissix hundred thousand, he's got to have
that in his DraftKings account, right, you know? So if if if
O Tawny paid, he he didn'tpay all debts he was paying. He's
(01:42:26):
and I'm not saying can't say it'sa debit. That's what it is.
It's a continued debit. Saying hecan't bet it if it's not in there.
That's the way. That's the wayI understand it. Paying him over
time the four and a half million, right, and so he was involved
in that sense knowing that he's youknow, hey, I need some extra
scratch here, I need some scratchthere. But it gets down to what
you just said, was he bettingon baseball? Right? And if it's
(01:42:48):
on DraftKings, should be able tofind that out right, if that's the
only place, call DraftKings and seewhat that's replaced. And then you have
to just dig into was it onbaseball? Okay, boom, no it
wasn't, or yes it was,And then you see because because Terrence,
if it was on baseball, there'ssome deeper dive we're going to have to
(01:43:08):
do on that one. Right,There is no question about yeah that that
that becomes a the guilt by associationbecomes deeper than that. But Otani deserves
no not being dogged by anything rightnow other than being too good a friend.
If he was allowing the guy tokeep doing this, and then you
enable a debt problem because four anda half million dollars will wake you ass
up as you're continuing to feed thedebt, because when you're going on there,
(01:43:30):
you can't bet unless the money's inweird, weird, crazy story,
Terrence, great stuff, brother, and I'll holler at you tomorrow after the
first round of this this call inand we'll catch up on this. Maybe
there'll be more legs to this story. Appreciate it, brother, Thanks,
you got it. Let's go tobreak. Come on back, Chris Gio
and the rest of you. We'llget to your seven one, three,
two on two five, seven ninety. The great news among all this is
(01:43:50):
you're I'm talking about the Astros twentyseventeen and jose er Keti appears there's no
structural damage. It was negative MRIand in about two weeks or so he
should be throwing again, which isgreat news. The concerns about the Astros
are what for you? I wentinto last season feeling really good. Two
thirds of this team, I feelgreat about the everyday lineup, the bullpen,
(01:44:15):
an unhealthy starting pitching staff concerns me. So where are they in your
overall rankings? Right? Any concernat all? And do you feel do
you remember your feelings at this timelast year going into the season, what
are they compared to this year?Sports Talk seven ninety The Sean Salisbury Show
continues it. Now you know, where's the guilt I'm just saying, if
(01:44:42):
you didn't bet on baseball as interpreter, other than a little bit of it's
uncomfortable that you would either feed anaccount or bail a guy out with your
money who's in four and a halfmillion dollars in debt, Your interpreter,
who makes a good salary, thatyou would bail a guy out of the
debt problem by paying four and ahalf million dollars to take care of it.
That I know, it's uncomfortable. It's our star. It's the biggest
(01:45:05):
star in baseball. It's the bestplayer in baseball. He's a Dodger now,
which makes it even bigger. Butif all's the interpreter did is is
it just as simple as the guy'sbad gambler and a turd and he cost
his partner. They call it massivetheft is what they call it in quotes.
But is he is he just aturd for spending money and Otani paying
(01:45:27):
it for him, and that Otaniguilty of being a good guy. The
key is if it went overboard whereyou're feeding DraftKings account to make sure because
you can't bet, as our guyTerrence said, and I think we all
know you can't bet unless there's moneyin the account, or is it like,
hey, let's you're good, we'llgive you any you have, any
(01:45:48):
max limit you want. We knowwho you're affiliated with. Now, that's
still not a bad thing as longads the bets weren't placed on a bookie
in baseball, well on DraftKings inbaseball, because if it's baseball, now
the story gets far more uncomfortable. And now you say, well, it's
(01:46:08):
easy to find out if he wasgambling on baseball on a site, was
anything else happening right now? Theinterpreter says, it was not baseball.
You are allowed to gamble on othersports not named baseball if you're a Major
League Baseball employee. So is itjust an addiction problem with the interpreter got
a lot of insight on that froma lot of people. I love getting
(01:46:30):
the different takes and how people feel. Geo, I think you were no
Gia. We'll get you to say, let's get to Chris, Chris,
you're waiting a little longer. Howyou doing, man, I'm doing good,
Sean. The first thing that cameto my mind when I heard about
this scandal with Otani was actually theDisney documentary they did on Ottani just this
(01:46:50):
past offseason. I don't know ifyou've seen it or not, but I
mean, really well produced movie, you know, but there that comes out
of that, I think is thatwell For one thing, yeah, he
is very dependent on an interpreter forEnglish. For another thing, he can
be a little bit I don't know, simple or maybe a little bit naive,
(01:47:15):
just in terms of I mean goingback to like his childhood. They
said he kind of wrote, hewrote on a piece of paper everything he
was going to do for the restof his life. And you know,
it's and when people heard like hedid that, you know, and in
the documentary they're all reacting to it, and so so some of this,
(01:47:35):
you know, the interest that isdefinitely here about this. I think it's
also kind of interesting given just OTommy's personality do you do you? And
basically kind of I did not seethe documentary, but it really comes down
to, I think what you're saying, is the guy such a naive.
(01:47:55):
I don't mean it in a negativeway, just so simple. Could it
be just as simple as this guydidn't know how to gambling. With all
the money he's making, he's helpinghis interpreter out, but the interpreter pushed
it so far that the guilt thatthat having a gambling guy around and it
being public with the biggest player andbiggest star in the sport, that they
had to fire him. That thefour and a half million dollars is just
(01:48:16):
as simple as Otani being a goodguy and bailing out an interpreter and realizing
his friend's a turd. Isn't thatas he could it be that simple?
Do you think? Is it?Is it? Really? That's he could
be? Couldn't it? It couldbe, but he could still be culpable.
I mean, I kind of agreewith the earlier color who said free
Pete Rose. Yeah right, AndI'm sure Pete feels the same way.
(01:48:38):
And you and I both know thatabout his career, and they'll be talking
about a hot button that never goesaway. Great stuff, man, I
appreciate the insight. Thank you.Let's get out to g O GEO.
Welcome in. What's up brother,Hey Sean? Great stuff as usual.
Man, I haven't caught in awhile because you know, my job and
everything like that. But uh uh, first I wanted to give Triple Lee
his flowers. Man, I haven'tcaught since he's been producing, and this
(01:49:00):
guy the Sun Showsbury soundtrack has beenon points since he's been on there,
so he's on fire man, keepit going. Yeah, So with this
old tin of situation, I agree, I got two sides to it.
So, like the last caller said, maybe it is the point that you
know, old Tiny is kind ofnaive and not let people take advantage of
(01:49:25):
him, but he's kind of like, you know, you know, I,
like the last caller said, prettymuch like the interpreter. You know,
he knows what he's doing with thebetter and everything like that. No,
Tanya is just so naive to thepoint where he kind of lets it
slide. But on the other end, I feel like, man, if
it walks like a duck, quackslike the ducks his duck. Man,
I think old Tany knew what wasgoing on, and I think their interpreter.
(01:49:47):
I know, you've seen your freshshare of mob movies, and every
mob movie there's always a fall guy. I think O Tiny knew what he
was doing, and I think theinterpreter is being the fall guy for what's
going on just so he can keephis you know, image, you know,
clean and and everything like that.So that's my take on it,
man, and I appreciate you getgetting me in that, hey, my
(01:50:09):
man, before you go and withthis. And even if he did know,
I mean, just just your opinionas a fan of sports, and
you've got such a great take onthis. Is it could it be?
Also? I mean, is hereally guilty if if Otani did do it,
if he did know all along? But the risk factor is you're in
your trusting your interpreter because you're agood guy. Maybe it took way too
(01:50:30):
much because he's telling you it's notbaseball. Are you tracking everybody makes so
you know it's not baseball? Isit enabling risks that it could get like
a gateway from other sports to baseballbecause you're around the best player in the
world. Or is it simply heyman, I'm gonna get I'm gonna you
can do it, but don't beton baseball. I'm trusting you, my
man. And then four and ahalf million dollars later, the dodge,
(01:50:50):
somehow, some way they find outand say we got to get rid of
him. It's too close for comfortto our star, right and a baseball
star. It could it could reallycome down to that, right, that's
yeah, that's that's a good taking. And I didn't get to that.
But honestly, if if it wasn'ton because you know, if you bet
on baseball and you're in baseball, that's an automatic desk. You're done.
Yep, if it would if itwasn't on baseball, it is no problem.
(01:51:14):
I think it's just a publicity thing. They want to keep a tiny
clean you know. They don't wantto make it out that these guys has
a gambling addiction and everything like that. So that's why the interpret they put
him as a fall guy. Butif it wasn't on baseball, man,
no harm, no foul. Thereyou go. Great stuff, yeah,
and great to hear from you, man, And you're right about Triple E's
a star. Man. We appreciateyou. Jill there you go talk to
yourself, all right, appreciate it. Hey, Darryl and Ray and Bob,
(01:51:38):
hang right there, because I,like I said, I hate cutting
you guys short when you got something, and this is there's some great topics.
So stay right there. Quick break, just a quick one coming on
back. Man. I told youwe only gotta have a couple of subjects.
We are gonna get to the enztwo A tournament. My man is
the biscuit guy. Final four andthere will be some upsets. I got
like four. I don't want tosay no names with teams you I wouldn't
(01:52:00):
expect in the sweet sixteen. SoI'm going more upset ridden too. Until
we get to the final four,we'll discuss, hopefully the Otani situation Orkeaty
back to throwing in a couple weeks. Good stuff, you guys, stay
right there, Love you guys. You guys have made this the best show
in the city. I know whatwe get credit for it. But without
Tripoli, without you guys, andwithout your listening, without your passion and
banter, this it doesn't work.Love you man, coming right back.
(01:52:24):
Sports Talk seven ninety and were there, but the Sean Salisbury Show continued,
there's no baseball involved that he knewwas going on and taking care of an
interpreter, and then it got tooclose because it's a bad look and they
just fired the interpreter. And he'sgot a gambling addiction. And Otani was
helping a friend out because if hebet outside of baseball, there is no
this isn't a moot point and nostory. The question is if they deep
(01:52:47):
dive FEDS or Major League Baseball.Major League Baseball wants no part of Otani
being tarnished. None, zero. He's the biggest star in baseball, the
best player in baseball. He's inLos Angeles. They want the smoke to
be put out now, and ifthere is some smoke, they're going to
limit it and pour water on itanyway, because guess what, it's show
(01:53:10):
heo Tani. That's just the waystardom works. And if it was non
baseball, there's no guilt. There'snothing wrong. If Otani knew the guy
was gambling and it wasn't and theycould prove that it wasn't baseball, and
he's bailing a friend out because he'sfour and a half million dollars in debt.
Now, you're probably too kind.I know you're worth a billion and
you're helping a friend out, butyou're also enabling and knowing all that.
(01:53:30):
I don't deny that Otani knew theguy was gambling. Who in the hell
would I have a hard time believinga billion dollar guy would risk his entire
fortune and his career and his legacyover betting on non baseball sports. That
well, he wouldn't get in troubleby betting on baseball? Should I say
that would put him in harm? But I don't know what addiction looks like
(01:53:51):
when it comes to gambling, butapparently his interpreter does because he's horrible at
it, and he said he's anaddict and he sucks at betting, well,
no doubt. So if Atani justbailed a guy out who bet on
non baseball as an MLB employee andemployed within the Dodgers organization, getting paid,
and guess what, there's no harmthere. It's the little too close
(01:54:13):
for comfort with our star, theassumption of guilt, the oh well,
it was the interpreter betting on othersports? Is there more out there that
Otani was funding him, keeping himout of debt so he didn't end up
not only in debt, but withsome other problems. If it was a
bookie, not just a four anda half million on draftings, all these
things, but other than a badlook, if Otani just bailed the guy
(01:54:35):
out with four and a half men, I don't even bailed him at joll
bailed him out of trouble with gamblingdebts and it was non baseball related,
there's no harm. You might aswell go buy a doctor pepper at the
store and pay for it for afriend. But the word gambling, whoo
man, everybody going crazy, andrightfully so, the question is how deep
does it go? And was itonly baseball? Let's roll through? I
(01:54:57):
think, uh, cowboy Darryl, you know, was Bob up neck?
Now, Cowboy Darryl, you wereup next. Let's go there, Cowboy
Darryl. Welcome in, brother. How you doing, Hey man, I'm
doing all right? Man, Hey, look here, let me I want
to I want to kind of addon something to my understanding you and Brian.
Brian's not there because you and hecan kind of go into this little
bit more. It was to myunderstanding that there's a certain type of bedding
(01:55:21):
that this falls in line that's illegalin California, specifically that this falls up
under and if so, can yougotta go guys, go into that a
little bit more. And also tomy understanding that after all this transpired,
(01:55:42):
they decided to file suit against theguy. Yeah, after giving him money,
so I think if he had aNow to my understanding, they are
they are are turning over everything, you know, to the authorities. But
had had he done this pry tothe investigation taking place with then there would
(01:56:04):
be no smoke, right, Hey, Darrel, let me ask you a
question about that real quick. Goingback to what you said about you know,
if you're gambling in a state whereit's illegal, right sports betting,
correct, that's what you're saying. But if you go onto one of those
sites and you're in a state thatdoesn't allow regardless of the state that doesn't
allow it, whether it's California orsomewhere else in Texas, if you're going
(01:56:28):
on a site it's not a fantasysite but a sports betting gambling site,
you can't bet on it. Theywon't let you bet on it if it's
not in I if you're in thewrong state and you're registered on there,
you got an account. First ofall, there's got to be money in
the debit. So it's not likefour and a half million if it's not
a bookie. Let's just say,as the interpreter said, it's DraftKings,
(01:56:48):
right, Darryl, You got tohave you got to put money in to
bet money. So if it's keepsrolling, he just keeps funding it at
some point, and I think youeventually put unless the guy put a false
account on there, You say, man, this guy's four and a half
million in debt. There's a ceilingon how much you can bet on those
sites. And if you're betting, you're trying to sports bet on a Draft
Kings or anybody else, you can'tbet if you're in it. If you
(01:57:13):
go, you'd have to go througha book. You can't bet on those
sites if you're betting from a statethat doesn't allow sports betting. So how
he did it and how he getsaround it. The other part of it
is so they'll look into that becauseit's easy to find out, right,
And if Draft Kings was letting theguy bet knowing he's Otani's interpreter, and
they heads their bet on that sayinglet's see if we can pull this off.
Well, I don't know how theydo it, but then they're going
(01:57:35):
to be called to the carbon.I don't think they did it that way.
So he'd have to be in astate that are registered, in a
state that has sports betting. Butif Otani didn't, if Otani just did
anything, but okay, you're gambling, it's just that I think it's that
association with that word, right,My man if Otani didn't bet, and
he wasn't involved in baseball betting oras interpreter if it was, if it
(01:57:58):
was soccer or lacrosse or basketball orfootball, there's no guilt here other than
this is too close for comfort. If he mad, if he stole the
money from him, now that's gonnabe the interpreter's got have to deal with
all that, the FEDS and everybodyelse. So I just, I mean,
there's so many layers to this.My gut says, oh, Tani's
just a nice guy and and newthat he is gambling and bailing him out.
(01:58:21):
Do you? First of all,let me ask you to see two
things and I hang up and listen. Possibilities of any tax of suspension.
After I hang up, I wantyou to elaborate on that. And I
also kind of throw out that forme, man, because I went,
I'm with US Customs, and I'mdown on the board a lot and a
lot of times I miss out untilI come home back home to Houston.
(01:58:42):
Yep. Is that any way Ican pick up on some of the some
of your you know, ie heart, anything on some of your shows that
I've missed. Yeah, I'm gonnahang up. Yeah, yeah you can,
Darryl. You go to the iHeartRadioapp and a podcast and find him
there. And you I don't knowif you're on social media, but I
think you are. But if ifyou're not, just go to et sewn
Unfiltered, hit me in my inbox. I'll tell you where you can find
(01:59:04):
him and you can follow that.I'll follow you back. Or if you
can't listen on the station, youcan listen to the iHeartRadio app, which
is globally every it goes anywhere andit's free. So there you go,
my man, appreciate you have agood one. All right, we'll get
Will Ray dere Bob. Let's takequick break. We're rolling along. The
segments go way too fast because thisis one of those hot but there's so
(01:59:25):
many layers to it. The simplicityof it is that the gambler, the
interpreter miss a horror. I thinkit is is he just he sucked and
he did a friend wrong, andhe put him in a bad way,
and he's a gambling attic and heneeds help. And Otani did a good
thing by helping him with helping himpay his debts, so he didn't get
more trouble, especially if he's notbet on baseball. If he's bet on
(01:59:45):
baseball, this is far deeper thanit goes. And Darryl, I don't
believe there's gonna be one ounce ofsuspension for Otani. I don't think they
want to and I don't think theydive deep into it, wondering if they
find out that this four and ahalf million was bet on other sports,
not baseball, there is no harm, and they won't they won't try to
dig deeper. You want to knowwhy you don't want a star tarnished because
you know that guilt by it.They don't want to look deeper, and
(02:00:08):
they don't want to hope it's notbaseball. Now they may look into the
interpreter and did he steal the money? Was it massive theft? As they
said? Did Otani? Just saylisten, man, I trust that you're
not gambling on baseball. I don'twant you get hurt, pay your debts.
How do they re brought up,Darryl about the betting and and and
in state and out of state andfour and a half million. But man,
you can't even keep up with this. There's so many layers to it.
(02:00:30):
The whole thing comes down to.It could be just as simple as
a bad gambler who's a turd andput his star player and hid the guy
he interprets for in a bad way, and Otani, being a nice guy,
gave money up because he can affordit, hoping the guy didn't put
an okie dokan. But I'm goingto tell you that's a big risk to
trust a guy that's willing to spendfour and a half million dollars on gambling
(02:00:51):
addiction and ask you for it andand and help you, and you just
say, yeah, it's not beenon baseball. If it was on DraftKings
or a site like said, thatcan be tracked. The question is is
there more and was it just nonbaseball. It's a bummer for Otani to
have to start like this, unless, of course, he was involved deeper.
But Major League Baseball absolutely wants nopart of any any handslap to Otani,
(02:01:16):
and he's really not guilty of anythingif all he did was pay off
a guy's debt. That wasn't abaseball in involvement. It is gambling that
makes everybody in pro sports uncomfortable becausethe affiliation with the biggest star in baseball
globally Sports Talk seven to ninety. You're back. This is the Sean Salisbury
(02:01:36):
Show. Get back at it.How did that ceiling get that high?
And you've got to have a debitin there or keeps going crazy stuff stuff
we don't have time for today. And quite frankly, and by the way,
the Padres beat the Dodgers, sothat series into a one one so
we got to tie for first placein the National League West, and so
and o'tanni seems I don't want tobelieve that he had anything other than maybe
(02:01:59):
knowledge the guy was gamble. Butif it's not baseball, there is no
story here unless and I think theuncomfortability that it's so Tani interpreter close.
Whenever it's gambling, the first thingwe think of. He had to be
doing it on a sport, rightand maybe that and if he was,
now, if the interpreter was bettingon baseball, now, then that that
path you have to take that pathback to Atani and find out what he
(02:02:21):
knew. Right now, that's thatthat's apparently the interpret says it's one hundred
percent. I bet the horrible gambler, he said, and terrible or horrible
I can't remember the phrase, theword he used, and that he's an
addict. Now is it a friendjust helping an addict, enabling an addict,
being naive enough that he's a niceguy and got a billion dollars and
(02:02:42):
that he's the biggest star in baseballand had no idea how deep it went,
or is there some outside stuff wherehe is You can track the bets
on a site. Was there somethingdeeper? But right now Otani deserves it.
I mean, they're going to bethe question. But if he didn't
do anything wrong other than give aguy money to pay off the gambling debt,
(02:03:04):
and that gambling debt was simply outsideof baseball, there is no legal
issue with Otani or Major League Baseballissue, or there's no rule that would
force a suspension. That affiliation withthe gambling thing makes the big bosses in
these sports uncomfortable. Yet they willhave make a billion dollars from sponsorship,
(02:03:30):
sitting on an outfield fence or ona uniform or name and stay that ballpark
you're playing in, so those kindof things. But this obviously will get
bigger before it goes away, meaningwe're trying to find all of it.
But It could be just as simpleas interpreters a bad gambler. Let's get
out to Will Will welcome in.How you doing, I'm doing great.
(02:03:51):
This is one day that I'm soexcited that there's traffic and I had time
to wait and get on there andtalk about this. I'm glad you're on
here, brother. I uh man. Honestly, I don't care if he
gambled or not. It doesn't botherme. But I the conspiracy theorist in
(02:04:12):
me right, Yeah, to me, it's just it's it's he lost four
and a half million gambling and theDodgers clubhouses like, oh my god,
how do we how do we turnthis? And they're like, hey,
have your interpreter take the fall forit. We'll support him for the rest
of his life, just so wedon't you know, Like whatever, man,
I am, I'm be the same. That's the first That's one of
(02:04:32):
those things Kate in my mind too, that he's this fall guy. That's
that's part that. Then that's theconspiracy part. I get it. And
real quick though, if he didbet on other sports, what's the problem
The fact that the fact that itmay be baseball that we're concerned, Well,
Yeah, I'm with you. Idon't care. But the rules have
you bet on baseball? You knowwhat that means? And Pete Rose knows
all about that unfortunately. But ifit's if it's other sports, it's just
(02:04:56):
that uncomfortable feeling, you know whatI'm saying. But if it was four
and a half million, and he'sgot the money to pay it, if
if if that's going by your conspiracytheory, there's nothing illegal about that,
right You're allowed to on other sports? Yeah, and uh, the the
one thing is now you don't know, I don't know the rule, you
know, like because even though gamblingis illegal in Texas, I can still
(02:05:16):
go on and do like underdog anddraft Kings and stuff. Yeah, the
fantasy part, like the the moreor less right, absolutely, But then
again, you like, like yousaid, you can't nobody confronts you that
money. So for the the onlyway they can do that is if you
went to a bookie, right andthey for you. So that's there's like
(02:05:38):
you said, there's so many layersto this that but one thing, the
one reason why I called is I, like I said, I love Otani.
I think he's great for the game, but I am so happy that,
especially a player for someone like theDogs, is now in the same
positions reason to boo them like theydid Altuve. I've already talked some buddy
(02:05:59):
of mine who have season tickets foruh in right field, and I was
like, man, we play theDodgers, we need to make some like
y'awk and steel might be if youwant, but need to make like some
giant playing cards and play blackjack withOtani in the does a little get get
back at him? Right? Eventhough Toddy maybe as it as it is,
could be right, and he hefeels like he's just as nice as
as Altuve. Right, it's justyou're like, man, this guy feels
(02:06:24):
harmless. He's just a great player. Yet we don't know how deep it
goes. But I'm with you onthe conspiracy side. There is no doubt
and it's kind of nice. Andwe're not talking about astros and that stuff
right now, but let's talk astrosand the good stuff. Man, great,
great point, So great to haveyou call in. Let's get to
Bob before break. You've been patient, Bob. What's up my man?
Real quick? So you kind ofhit on the conspiracy theory thing. So
(02:06:46):
say it comes down that Otani beton baseball. Now you're talking suspension.
Now the whope Pete Rose thing comesback? Yep, yep. Possibly go
with some kind of thing like Peteserved as time instead of a lifetime ban
for a Tani, maybe a tenyear he can get in so he plays
out his career. I'm just seeingthis open a whole can of words and
(02:07:08):
we start listening to Pete Rose again. If somebody's gonna go out there and
try to track this down to Otani, you or not, man, Yeah,
I appreciate it, Bob, realquick, Before we go to break
about this thing, let's just goon the conspiracy theory. If it was
baseball and it was Otani, oneis I'm not sure. I'm just gonna
(02:07:30):
tell you. My gut instinct tellsme that if they found out behind the
scenes, now somebody overall, likewe had to call earlier, say somebody
will write a book or a tellall and say it down the road.
But let's just say conspiracy wise, just for talking sake, for gambling's sake,
If Atani was gambling on baseball andMajor League Baseball found that out,
I'm not sure that you'd ever know, Honest to god, I'm not sure
(02:07:56):
you'd ever know unless you could trackit on a site and they can come
out and said, what do youmean, I've bet on baseball. Here're
three million dollars, We see it. But if it was behind the scenes
thing and you didn't know, thisis conspiracy. The guy's not guilty of
anything yet other than being a kindto his interpreter or any paying off a
debt. If that's the case, allegedly outside of baseball, because you're allowed
to gamble on other sports. Well, so if that was as because think
(02:08:20):
about the layers in Great Point byBob what if it was and they came
out. You can't just suspend aguy who gambled on baseball. I thought
he was supposed to be banned ifit was the case, if you found
out he bet four and a halfmillion dollars on baseball, that's a lifetime
ban. And then it gets toPete Rose. And if you say no,
(02:08:41):
we're just going to suspend the currentstar because well things have changed over
the years, then Pete Rose hasgot to be back, and he's got
to be in the Hall of Fame, be allowed anywhere he wants to go
in baseball. If that was thecase. So for baseball, their bad.
The best thing for them is,well, no gambling, no concier
spiracy. Theory is nothing. Thathe's innocent and the rest of it.
(02:09:03):
The next best thing is if itwas him and he did know and it
was baseball for his interpreter and hewas fun in it, how do we
go about what was his affiliation?Did he know he was betting on baseball?
And the third worst thing, thething they don't want is a little
tadi bet on baseball because the nextthing is suspension. Pete Rose jumps back
in the fray, and this wouldbe for a current player on his betting
(02:09:26):
on baseball. I have a hardtime believing there's that many layers to it,
but man, can you imagine wherethat would go? Yes, and
then if you just suspended and PeterRose has to come back in. Now,
if you said, oh, hebet on baseball, don't carry a
star he is he is banned frombaseball for life, Well, that would
be the biggest story and we wouldtalk about that every day for years.
(02:09:50):
I don't think it's that, butI don't know. I think it could
be just as simple as his interpreter. But others think that he found a
fall guy. That's the conspiracy part. It was a great call, but
Bob, that's it. If hedid find out he's betting on the conspiracy
side. If you suspended Pete Roseis right back in the fray of getting
in the Hall of Fame. Youwould have to reinstate him because he was
banned from baseball. If in fact, you just suspend the guy, that
(02:10:13):
opens up a whole can of wormswith that. I don't think you're ever
going to know if he did ordidn't. If Baseball was involved with the
die with Number seventeen show Heyo Tani, the interpreter is obviously a bad gambler
with that. After looking at it, I hope, I guess part of
me says, I hope that wenever hear about that. I know some
people want this to happen to takepressure off others, but I can't imagine
Otani is crazy enough to bet onbaseball or be affiliated with anybody that was.
(02:10:37):
The FEDS in Major League Baseball aregonna have to figure that out.
Let's hope that's not the case. But if the guy has got an addiction
problem, then he's gotten fired, and now he's got to go find help.
That's a lot of money and that'sa good friend loan to get taking
care of the debt. If thatis the case. Sports Talk seven ninety

this is important. And I've talkedabout power of attorney in the past on
certain things in bank accounts when ittalks to agents and players and why people
lose money, and this is different, but there's similarities to you know,
(02:13:26):
and Cass says, Hey, Sean, it was betting. He was betting
through an illegal bookie that is beinginvestigated by the FTC due to wire transfers
coming directly from Otani's bank account. And that makes perfect sense because with him
saying he didn't bet baseball the interpreterand betted on DraftKings, I don't know
you guys out there that know theceiling. I don't know the ceiling on
(02:13:46):
betting apps like that. Can youhave a rolling account because you have to
have it debited if the debt getsthat high, They're not going to let
you keep betting, are they.Let's say he had forty thousand in your
account when they just take it outand cover the debt. However that works,
But if a bookie is involved, like the FTC and they investigate it,

okay, So if it's coming outof the account. And here's the
other part, Baseball Beerry great stuffcast and Baseball Beary I know nobody has
access to your bank account without yourapproval, and that you're responsible for what
that person does with your money. It can't be theft. Thank you,

of all, if you got hackedin your bank account, and that's a
big hacked, and okay, wellyou know we hear about that kind of
stuff happening. But when it comesto this, there's no way on God's

would you be sending the money unlessyou gave your agent and or financial advisor

and he's thinking, well, wegot a billion dollars in this damn
thing. Let's just get him, just pay this so it goes away.
There's a bookie out there. Wedon't want anything worse to happen than just
the money to the interpreter. Butif the money's being directly deposited into an

and if you're the bank, listen, think about your bank card. I'll
get a message. If you're atsome other place in five minutes later you
had to go and use your debitcard somewhere else, I'll get it.
It's like eight hundred bucks you werebuying, you know, new golf clubs,
and then fifteen minutes earlier you wereat a restaurant. They'll send you
(02:21:22):
a fraud alert on just that.I think you'd know if money was coming
out, there'd be a fraud.Do you know where this is going?
Of course that's that's a fiduciary responsibility. And if you don't know something,
then naive goes to stupidity. Youhave to know nobody's getting in my bank
account without me knowing. So ifin fact they were, it was being
(02:21:45):
the betting through in an illegal bookie. Now the story gets deeper because you
say, okay, you tell usit wasn't baseball on the site, we
can figure it out if it's alegal site. If it's a betty I
mean a bookie and it's cash, hand to hand cash, how are we
going to find out if it wasbaseball or not. Well, they'll dig
d they find, they'll eventually find. You usually do. That's why I
want to say the path so gladwe do this. I figured I get
(02:22:07):
it out of the way now becausethere's so many layers to it. But
that's the next layer to this. And thank you guys for your insight too.
And you read this. When Iread that, I'm like, come
on, man. It's like whenan athlete loses ten million dollars and he
says, yeah, my agent stoleit from me. Well, why'd you
give him power of attorney? Inthis case, your bank pulls it out,
you know where, you know exactlywhere it's going. So but it
(02:22:28):
still could be just Otani saying let'slet's get this to go well and want
it to come out and wanted toget hurt. Let's do it. But
if it's an illegal bookie, nowwhere we're a whole different level of legal
and illegal stuff, hence the nameillegal bookie. Four and a half million
dollars comes out of your acount, billionaire or not. You know it's been
speaking. You have to know, and if you don't, that's where the
(02:22:50):
depth of this goes. Now that'sthe deepest part of the conspiracy theories kicking
in that fact. So this isweird. But I still don't think that
show Heyo Tani is going to bethe show. Heo Tani, in my
opinion, ain't missing a game dueto a suspension or affiliation or gambling.
(02:23:11):
I don't know if he ever didit, but when it's that close to
a guy who spends every single dayfor months with you, you have to
sit there. And I understand whyconspiracy theorists would question it, but direct
deposits and do it illegal bookie, and that's when, oh, the narrative
shifts. I'm telling you that thisis going to be a deep dive.
(02:23:35):
But I still don't think Otani.I'd like to hope he didn't bet on
baseball, and if it's inside abaseball with an illegal bookie, all hell
is going to break loose, Iassure you. But as some mentioned,
the Golden goose, and that's Otani, I don't think you're going to see
him miss any baseball, even ifit was just affiliation with a interpreter that
(02:23:58):
ended up being a gambling addict.Let's quickly get out to John and Andy.
We got to I'm gonna give youguys about forty five seconds each because
we got to go to break. What's up, buddy? How you doing?
Hey man? What's up? Listen? Man? Baseball does not control
every journalist. Hopefully we'll see journalismat its fine. It's an independent journalist.
This is when you think about it. This is a big, big
(02:24:18):
story for a journalists that's trying tomake it. So. I hope that
if Attorney was betting, I hopethey find out and they and baseball is
gonna have to lay the hamm onit, just like they did Pete Rose.
And they come back and try tosay, well, we'll let Pete
in and all this now Baseball willtake a big hit with their credibility here
(02:24:43):
in America. We're not gonna likethat at all. You know, we've
already seen baseball come up the Yankeeladder and cover up a few other things
and stuff like that. And ifyou don't mind me saying, this committee
here that puts players in the Hallof Fame. You know, I love
Big Poppy to dead. But whenyou put Big Poppy in that, and
I'm already got in there, youshould have put bad bonds and clemings in
(02:25:05):
there. And Pete Rose has servedhis time, he did not commit murder.
So that committee right there, theyneed to get a committee to oversee
that committee, and they need toget rid of them. I don't know
how in the world put you putmy man that I loved, Big Poppy
in the Hall of Fame, andyou stab me in my face and tell
me that no clems and bad bondscan't go in. But Big Poppy he
(02:25:30):
flumped a couple of ped detests, you know what I mean. And we
know that there's other players in theHall of Fame too that was on that
Bolky list. So no baseball. And I love o Tiny, but if
he did it, you do there'sno day if if he is guilty of
baseball gambling and either doing it orknowing about it or was affiliated with it.
Oh, your damn rights, itcan't be all okay, we'll just
(02:25:52):
suspend him and Pete, you're backand you're your one hundred percent correct.
Thanks for the call. Great, great insight, Andy, I got forty
five seconds for you, brother. What's up? There's no way that draft
Kings would allow someone to get thatmuch in debt. Agreed is this has
got to be illegal betting. AndI'm sorry Otani doesn't come up to me
(02:26:15):
as a guy that's ignorant. Agreed, let someone have access to all those
millions. That's ridiculous. And you'reright, nothing's gonna happen, though,
Tannie, there's a reason why theDodgers played opening Day in Korea. Nothing's
going to happen here. And it'ssad. If it was somebody else was
(02:26:37):
a mediocre player, they would digdeep. And you know what, Sean,
Too bad we don't have real journalistsanymore, because this would be a
hell of a story. Well, let's hope somebody, like a previous caller
said, let's let's hope somebody divesdeep. So a journalist that actually doesn't
care about the consequences of diving deepinto a story and find out and see
(02:26:58):
if this is a conspiracy, ifthe FTC is heavily involved, and the
FEDS and the you know when itcomes to Federal Trade Commission with the Feds,
and if Otani had anything to dowith baseball, or if it's just
as simple as a bad gambler thatbet on everything but baseball, meaning as
interpreter. But you're right, somejournalists is got to take that challenge,
my man, and you and Iboth know it. But the Golden Goose
(02:27:20):
ain't going down. Even if hewas, they'll do everything they can to
protect it. We know how thatworks, right, we just do.
You're exactly right, all right, brother, appreciate you. Talk to you
tomorrow. Man. It's Sports Talkseven ninety Little n C two a tournament
talk and uh man, the feelingson the Assros, I can feel it
building the Orchidi news is good news. Got to get the staff healthy.
(02:27:41):
Sports Talk seven ninety High Fastballer's Junior. If you're just an Astros, you're
listening to Sean Salisbury on Sports Talkseven ninety Lambs book Colors. How about
the performance your home for Houston Astrosbaseball season where you're pitching staffs. Health
(02:28:01):
is a little uh suspect, andI mean that little bit facetious. It's
suspect right now, the health wise, but getting him back sooner than later,
excuse me, would be very nice. They kick off against the Yankees
on Thursday next week with an afternoongame. Right here at minute made Park,
Otani interpreter, FEDS involved, MajorLeague Baseball was gambling? Was there
(02:28:24):
gambling on baseball? Four point fivemillion dollars leads back to Atani painted offers.
Interpreter and interpreter have been fired. He says he's got a gambling addiction,
and wire transfers to illegal from fromOtani's bank as if he didn't know
to illegal bookie and all these things. It's it's listen, you need a
fifteen hour show to cover half ofit, but we've covered a lot of
(02:28:46):
it with some phenomenal takes on Twitter, social media and right here on the
phone lines and the layers of this. Remember though, it's it's the biggest
star in baseball. This would bea major black guy, not only for
the Dodgers and Otani if there wasany baseball part involved or Otani's involved,
(02:29:09):
the protection that I mean, they'dput a wall around the protection or a
secure I mean, to try andprotect the star as much as they could.
But if they did it right,or a journalist digs and they found
out it was baseball and Rob Manfordin the whole group, this would get
ugly. If it's no baseball involved, no way, then he's just guilty
of being a good friend that hepaid off a debt for a friend who
(02:29:30):
bet on other sports, meaning hewas a friend. I don't know if
he is now, but as theinterpreter, four and a half million dollars
and who knows how much more itis if there is, if he just
took care of a debt as afriend, if he was gambling outside of
baseball, it's the uncomfortability of theguilt close to al. It's gambling.
It's got to be baseball. Butif it wasn't, then this story has
(02:29:50):
to go away. Other than theguy you know was is that the Dodgers
don't want that around Otani. Thenwhen you got that kind of debt,
it's a baggage. We're not caringwith the Dodgers if he bet on other
sports. Major League Baseball employees that'splayers included. You can bet on sports
outside of you on sport. Now, some would say, well, is
that a gateway from fantasy to thatand betting on other sports gateway to base
(02:30:11):
pay close to the best baseball playerin the world. Of course, those
conspiracy theories are going to exist, and maybe they're not conspiracy theories. Somebody's
gonna dig though, and you're gonnafind out one way or the other.
The question is if it was likethat, what would Major League Baseball do?
Obviously it'll be talked about over thenext few days. And here we
are a week away from well theregular hole for regular season starting. The
(02:30:31):
Dodgers are now one and one asa Padres win today, let's get out
to Al in the South side.Al. What's happening? My man?
Hey, what's going on? Show? All good? I got a couple
of things on this show, heal, Tony. I agree that man is
Henderson to prove and guilty. Buta caller called Den and I'm just say
(02:30:56):
to see a show, whether thisshow Tani, I don't care who it
is. I'm what you call afair dude. And so many times we
see in sports some people get ballblack balls, some people get slid by
than others, and we know thestory with that. My thing is this,
(02:31:18):
if he did something or whatever,he ain't bigger and people need to
really listen to this show, heyor Tani, it's not bigger than the
MLB. It will be here beforehe came and it will be here when
he leaves. If anything is connectedto baseball, hold ut out like you
(02:31:39):
say, if it wasn't, noharm, no fire, but rest and
show. If anything is connected tobaseball, it's old uti. He ain't
bigger than the MLB. Period. Now my take on this basketball, Sean
is this, I just picked thatyou of H and you is in my
(02:32:01):
final four the other two. Ireally can't just shake it up. But
I'm just choosing on being a home. I'm choosing you of H and I'm
picking U Khon to being a finalfour. And I hang up this take
UH and Yukon in the final four. That's two number one seeds in Yukon
(02:32:22):
in the East and Houston and theSouth. It's a great point. Let's
let's come back and talk to thesebrackets. I'll just tell you this I
have and a good point out aboutlisten, if all this comes conspiracy or
not, or if the FTC andFeds find out that in Major League baseball.
My question is if they found outit was gambling on baseball, eventually
(02:32:43):
somebody would spill the beans. Butyou're gonna do everything you can to protect
the bride, the best player inbaseball. The question but how you're right?
Nobody's bigger than that, and ifit was, if it was really
a bad thing, and I'm thinking, why would you even get yourself affiliated
with this? Maybe he didn't knowhow depth, the deep, how deep
it goes. Yet when money's beingtaken out of your account and you're feeding
it to another account, well youhave to know. So there's that.
(02:33:07):
But I'm hoping that there's no baseballinvolved either way, and I hope otanis
not. I just do that's Iwant great players on the field. But
if he, if he, ifhe is, then you're exactly right,
al You're gonna have to You're gonnahave to hit him square with that one.
You just are. If you beton baseball, it's simple, you're
out. You're out. So let'shope that that's not the case, because
(02:33:28):
we'd be But if you rob Peter, you payball. If it is,
you can't play favorites. The questionis would they would they would a mid
level baseball player if it was baseballand the conspiracy whatever, if it was
the gambling on baseball, would themidle level guy be treated the same as
Otani? You probably you know thatanswer, right, They sure as heck
(02:33:50):
wouldn't work to protect you as much. But it's still a black eye no
matter what. The gambling makes ituncomfortable. But again, if it was
just a friend taking care of aguy, you give it him money because
he bet outside of baseball and he'sgetting himself in so deep. And if
it's illegal gambling and illegal betting andwith a bookie, four and a half
million dollars in debt doesn't just equala handslap or a hey buddy, we
(02:34:11):
need that money. You can payit back ten dollars at a time.
It goes far deeper than that. And we all know you've seen it on
TV, and that's real. Okayfor some keep an eye out. If
the guy comes back wearing crutches, then you'll know. Okay, then you'll
know. But Otani could be justas simply as being a good dude taking
(02:34:31):
care of a friend or it couldgo deeper than that where the conspiracy kicks
in. But when the Feds getinvolved, it's fairly serious. Let's hope
it's not baseball involvement. Let's comeback and talk about our brackets. I'll
tell you this. I have SaintMary's, Creighton, McNeese, State,
and James Madison all getting to theSweet sixteen. That means even though there's
(02:34:54):
some of those are high like Creighton'sheld in very very high guard. They're
like they're a three seat I believe. So it's not really many upsets.
But you're not used to seeing DougMcDermott's out there. You're not used to
seeing Creighton getting deep into a tournamentall the time. This team's really good.
We'll talk about where years are myfinal four I like, and I
(02:35:15):
like the Houston Cougars in the final. Let's discuss Sports Talk seven ninety.
There's a lot happening and he's gota lot to say about it. Sean
Salisbury continues on seven ninety. I'mgonna be here. You know what I
wanna do. I'm just gonna throwout people the best tweet to me about
(02:35:37):
why they should host the show withme. Maybe I should do that one
of these times when when Brian's offand see who are going to put in
the chair for one day? Thatthat's the bonus that the best tweet,
the funniest tweet, or the funniestmeme gets a seat at that a four
hour seat is a guest as aguest host, maybe I should do that
at some point. I should havethought of that earlier coming here, because
you know, nobody cares about me. I'm stuck in a studio. No
(02:35:58):
windows, no doll there is awindow there. Good gracious, stop put
some respect. I feel like poutingright now? Why not? But I've
already my conspiracy there is that I'llbeat down by the where's walda o' tawny
story? Like it's all over about? But we do have with the astros.
Are astros getting ready to tee itoff. A week from today,
you won't be facing garat cole anduh. I always want the best,
(02:36:22):
but hey, it's the Yankees comingto town. That place is going to
be packed and it's going to startearly. I need to throw a little
beer party and Vital's party before thatgame starts next week. I need to
pick a spot and do it well. Sean where I'll invite you if I
do, please, but hopefully, hopefully I won't be sitting in the studio
alone all week. Yeah, man, unbelievable. What do you got six
(02:36:46):
months vacation? Are you that? Are you? Are you that big now
that you already got six months vacation? A year yet yet? And you
are impactful? But good gracious, there we go, But we'll I'll be
here tomorrow unless, of course,I pull Hammy. That's what I'm gonna
do. I just not gonna showup. Let everybody just said it here.
We're gonna run the best of now, I'm kidding you. The NC
(02:37:07):
two A tournament starts today. Iknow this first four and listen, not
one of those teams that one isgonna win. They're not winning their their
next game. Well it's not fairto say. I hope they make a
competitive but I don't think they are. I'm trying my five twelve upset in
this. I gotscon James Madison beatenWisconsin, and I got James Madison beaton
(02:37:30):
Duke in the first two rounds.I do right then and there James Madison
beating Wisconsin, James Madison beaton Duke, that's a twelve beaten a five,
and then a twelve beating a four. That's one of my I don't know
if it's a reach pick. Ithink Duke's very beatable. And while I
like Wisconsin and I like with theway they play, and I like the
way they're coached, I think theycan be had as well. One of
(02:37:54):
these twelves is winning. You lookacross at all the five twelves. But
and the other one, you know, Gonzaga McNee State. That's the second
one I have. And once again, and once McNeese State wins that game,
they're going to beat Kansas if Kansasis able to get by Samford,
I got McNeese State. I gotto twelve seeds going to the sweet sixteen.
I do, and I'm not afraidof those bets. I think it
(02:38:20):
can happen. Hell, let mejust check. I got to check what
kind of seed my guys got.Yeah, Same Mary's is the five seed.
That Grand Canyon is going to playa good game. But I think
Saint Mary's is undervalued. I likethem too. Sometimes you got to go
deep in these upsets, and Idid this time. And then the two
(02:38:41):
I got two to one seeds thatwill not make it to the final four,
and that's North Carolina and Purdue both. I take it back Purdue to
the final four getting beat I'm notcomfortable with that. I almost I almost
had Creighton get into the final four. I think Creighton's a good basketball team.
Now, Tennessee's two seed out ofthat bracket. I don't think Texas
lasts long in this tournament. Ithink Tennessee can last long. I want
(02:39:05):
to know what Rick Barnes is goingto do in this situation to get him
and he's a hell of a regularseason coach. How deep can they go
in the tournament? I think theyin the sixteen. I think they're gonna
get Creighton. I think Creighton's gonnabeat him. That was one of my
most difficult ones because although it's nota huge upset, Creighton's the three seed,
Tennessee's a two seed, and they'rereally good. But you know,
at that point in time when youthink all things are equal, you say,
(02:39:26):
Okay, the SEC is a betterconference, or should I go there?
It's like the Big twelve being abetter conference. But I have a
one Big twelve team, one Pactwelve team for now. Even though with
the conference going away. I gotone Yukon in the East obviously, and
Purdue is a Big Ten team Ihave. I don't have any team.
(02:39:48):
I don't have any Final four teamthat's got two teams from the same conference.
But a lot of these I goby. I don't even look at
Seeds. I've watched a lot ofbasketball. I do twelve I do,
but i'd look at I don't justlook at the record. I go in
and what I've seen about him.Now if I haven't seen, I haven't
seen much of Drake. Now.I know I've watched highlights of them and
(02:40:11):
listen to like guys like Jay Billistalk about guys teams like Drake, but
I haven't watched I think I sawhim one time, maybe this year.
But then when it gets to thatpoint, I choose. There are some
of these picks you're going gut right, some of them you just do you
go on gut or you say I'mgonna take a flyer on this team.
For the most part, I tookteams that I truly believe in and have
seen a lot and mostly but Ican tell you, you know, anybody
(02:40:35):
says, oh wait, I've watchedDrake fifteen times. I haven't. I
haven't watched Colgate play this year.I've seen a couple highlights of them,
but I have not watched him play. I've watched Baylor a bunch, and
if Colgate beats Baylor, they're gonnahave to play good basketball. Watched New
Mexico a lot. I haven't seenCollege Charleston play much. I've watched Alabama
play, so Saint Mary's their WestCoast, but I like them. I
think, you know, Gonzaga alwaysis that team getting all the credit.
(02:40:58):
Saint Mary is better up there andthey're good. So I've seen some James
Madison, but I haven't seen theirwhole schedule. Watched a good deal of
Marquette. I've listened to insiders onMcNeese State and I've seen them just a
little, and I've watched a bunchof highlights and go back and see them
and kind of read what the beatRiders and stuff say about them. Were
(02:41:20):
on campus. I know they're agood basketball club. So when it gets
to that, you go, okay, they're thirty and three. How dangerous
are there? Then you go,you know, google them and say,
okay, let me see this.I want to see this highlight. But
there's no way you can sit thereand say, all of us, I've
seen all these now if you're inthe bracket or Joe Lonardi maybe or Jay
Billis, but hard to watch themall. A lot. The majority of
these teams I've seen something of.But then we get the Purdues, which
(02:41:41):
just feel like I've seen Purdue inHouston and the Iowa States and Yukon's on
a daily basis, but truthfully ona weekly basis at some point in time.
So I love this time of year. Bracket's a crap shoot. I
do think getting to Houston. Igot Houston and Arizona, mind Yukon,
Arizona, Houston and Purdue in thefinal four, and I truly believe that
if Houston can stay out of foultrouble with the big men and keep scores
(02:42:07):
in the low sixties to fifties,Houston can win the whole thing. I
think their defense can help them overcomean average shooting night. But as we've
seen in the past with this team, one of the problems is they ran
into that you couldn't knock down.Certain shots happened against Iowa State. I
think shed was at one point threeof nineteen in that game. If he
(02:42:28):
goes three to nineteen against the tworounds into this tournament, Houston will be
in trouble. But the great thingabout is they got other scores and they
can overcome that. It be introuble. I mean when you get to
a team like Kentucky, who Igot them in the Elite eight. You
get to a team like that, you got to shoot better. You can't
be horrendous shooting. But defense travelsbetter than offense does. It always does,
(02:42:52):
and they're relentless. The key forthem is health and foul trouble.
If the big stay out of foultrouble. I haven't seen a team at
their best this year. Yukon close. I understand why they're the one set
Arizona close. I think Purdue hasit. The big man's can be the
big man can be unstoppable, andSmith's a good player and a good shooter.
But I can tell you when they'reat their best, I haven't seen
(02:43:16):
anybody better than Houston this year. When they're at their worst, there may
be a team or two better,But even at their worst, their defense
will keep them in a game. The Iowa State Game and loss in the
championship of the Big Twelve is anaberration. I assure you. I don't
mean that at Iowa State's not good. I got them going deep too,
and they're going to lose to Yukonat some point, I think. But
(02:43:39):
the University of Houston is good enoughto play average and get through some of
these rounds. But we're talking deeper. This isn't It'd be a disappointment if
they only get to the sixteen, the sweet sixteen, and we know that.
But that aberration against Iowa State. They're not getting run out of the
building in any game in this tournament, even if they shoot poorly. Their
defense travels. But when you runinto Kentucky, Purdue, a Yukon or
(02:44:05):
an Arizona in the final, evena Baylor or a Saint Mary's or in
Iowa State on the other side thatyou would play in the championship game,
that you're going to have to bringevery ounce of it on both ends.
And they are relentless and they areviolent in a legal way. It's gonna
be a blast to watch. We'llfinish this one up, Gil, I'll
get to you as we come onback. It's Sports Talk seven ninety.

two A well getting paid and beingAL two A. This is this is
going to be a massive lineup todeal with and you get him too the
bullpen. It's most of the timegoing to be lights out for the opposing
team. The question is how deepcan you go, how much work are
you going to give him and howhealthy you get Erkidi. Good news is
that it's no structural damage ucl andhe's a couple weeks and he'll be able
to resume throwing. The tough newsis he's not going to start the season.
(02:46:54):
Neither is Verlander. So there's goingto Hunter Browns, JP Frantz or
the obviously we know from we're goingto open against the Yankees next Thursday,
and then Javier to be who wethink he is with all that great stuff.
There's ifs they exist. Question ishow deep to the ifs exist?
With you talking Ncy to a tournamentas well show Heyo Tani and all that's
(02:47:16):
gone on, and we spent threeplus hours on today. The story is
deep. Feds involved. The questionis was baseball and gambling involved or is
Atani just guilty of being a goodguy and has a turd for an interpreter
who wanted the money. But whenthey say theft out of his bank account,
if you're feeding and paying off adebt, it's coming out of your
account, how's the theft If youknow what's coming out and you don't do
(02:47:39):
anything about it, that's where theSteve. It gets a little gray there
for me. But baseball has beenreferred to the golden goose and the best
player, and rightfully so on whatseems like one hell of a human.
But we never know what goes onbehind the scenes with this, and he
is innocent as we speak. Andif it is not baseball, then show
Heyo Tani and his interpreter. He'sget fired and that's what he has to
(02:48:00):
deal with that and how he's goneabout his business and gambling and get in
debt. It's a bad look. But if you bet as an MLB employee
outside of baseball, there is noproblem. You can bet on other sports.
You can't bet on your own.As we well know. Le's get
out to Gill and Hockley. Gill, what's up man, last caller of
the day? All right? Hiyou there, Gil? Start? Yeah?
(02:48:24):
Here you cut out? Start again? Would you say, Okay?
With all that money he's making, how long has he been in the league,
shouldn't he have learned English to radio? Oh? I would imagine he
knows some English. I would imaginehe does. He's a smart guy.
He's got an interpret I would imaginewhen like if you were going to spend
seven years in Japan, wouldn't youstart to learn the language even if you
had an interpreter some My guess ishe's bright. I would think that he's
(02:48:48):
probably trained himself to be able todo understand. I mean, it's only
an advantage for him, just likehang on one say and so. But
the interpreter wise, I would imaginehe does we obviously have. Is that
because he wants to make sure he'sdoing it exactly the right way. I
would imagine he knows some English.I don't know how the depth of it
goes, but he's had an interpretersince he's been here. Hey, turn
(02:49:11):
your radio down, Gill. Yougot to turn your radio down, buddy,
Okay, yeah, okay, Soanyway, Yeah, do you remember
when they implement it that rule withthe women's LPGA, that there were so
many Asians Korean stuff that they hadlearning this so that their sponsors could,
you know, throw him, theycould talk to him. I know they
don't have that in baseball, butI mean, don't you think that would
(02:49:33):
I'm just wondering if that's that's hisreason. He doesn't want to say knows
English so he doesn't have to comeup up against questions. Yeah, but
they'll give you another interpreter, somehow, some way through an interpreter. I'll
come in. Now. You makea good point, Gill, and thank
you for the call. Yeah,I appreciate you, brother, have a
good one and and an interesting point. And I don't know the entire rule
(02:49:54):
about the LPGA. And there's alot of great players from that part of
the world, and it would seemwith sponsors and with player, you know,
empowerment and involvement with fans and faninvolvement that speaking English and they you
know, we've got a lot ofdifferent languages that are in Major League Baseball.
That learning some English and understanding itand communicating. Of course, just
like if you went into a foreigncountry, you'd want to learn, you
(02:50:16):
know, whether it's South America, whether it's going to you know, going
to Brazil and learning Portuguese, orgoing to Mexico or going to you know,
another country like like Japan and learninga different language. It would only
serve you well to the communication,I guess. And I'm going to give
Otani the benefit of the doubt andthinking he knows that that some kind of
(02:50:37):
English. I don't think he's hidingbehind the fact that he's got an interpreter.
And it's a good point, Gil, but I don't think he's hiding
behind the fact that he's got aninterpreter, and that's how he's going to
get a that doesn't have to answerthese questions, because there's plenty out there
that can ask the questions and theycan interpret it, and they will have
an interpreter for him anyway. Soit's going to go deeper than that.
But it is a good point ofmaybe, you know, you're talking about
(02:50:58):
learning more English. I don't knowthe extent of what his English or other
people from his country know. Hereis baseball players, how much they can
speak. It would serve all ofus well to learn more about other countries,
other languages, and if you're ina country for an extended period of
time, you probably just buy chanceand go around it you start to learn
it. That would be my thoughtprocess. But this story's going to get
(02:51:20):
deeper and we'll find out exactly whereit goes. But Dodgers loose today,
so it's one one coming back homeand Major League Baseball starts next Thursday.
Great to have you guys on board. Keep an eye on these astros.
Good news on Jose or Keati NCTWOA tournament starts today. I have Houston,
