Speaker 1 (00:02):
Salisbury, old very Salisbury, Houston.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Okay, let's do this.

Speaker 3 (00:08):
Shawn Salisbury to usc Troup, longtime friend Shawn Salisbury, Dan
Matthewscuse host. This is the Shawn Salisbury Show.

Speaker 4 (00:23):
The Kogs Final four bound beating Tennessee sixty nine fifty
to move on Duke Saturday in San Antonio. Astros take
two or three over the weekend from the Mets. They
were off yesterday. They get the Giants in town to
start up a series in min wou Lee, holding off
Scottie Scheffler and Gary Woodland to win the Texas Children's
Houston Open over at Memorial Park. Rockets beat the Suns

(00:46):
one forty eight one oh nine in Phoenix the Lakers
tonight in La Sean. I threw it out yesterday on Twitter,
and I truly mean it. I think that probably this
weekend was the best Houston sports weekend that I can
ever remember. Now, I get it the Astros in twenty
two they won the World Series on a Saturday. That
would probably qualify, But at the time, I mean, just over.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
The best Houston weekend you can ever remember.

Speaker 4 (01:11):
Yes, across the board, absolutely success wise, yes, absolutely do
explain so when the Astros won it in twenty two.
The Rockets were down, the Texans were down, and I mean, yes,
it is a world championship. That's awesome. That would absolutely
qualify as being a hell of a sports weekend. But
the Astros are in a good place. The Rockets are

(01:33):
in a great place, you of h even better than
probably they were at that time, even though they were
just a year removed from being in the final four.
And I mean, just what an awesome weekend it was
over at Memorial Park for the Text Children's Houston Open,
And I mean the finish yesterday was amazing. Where you've
got Scottie Scheffler on eighteen with a chance if he

(01:54):
doesn't fly that seven iron short of the green, with
a chance to birdie up and orse a playoff or
at the very least give himself an opportunity to maybe win.
If Minwu Lee falls behind there and Bogie's up on
the final hole, I mean, you still had a chance
for a three way playoff there with him Gary Woodland,

(02:14):
who he was a great story in his own right
this weekend, but that was awesome. I mean the Astros
pitching their you know what's off against the Mets, where
The only guy that really hurt you in that series
was Juan Soto, and pretty much the only way that
he did damage in this entire series was a Friday
night solo home run. I mean, he was pretty much
the only guy that hit for that team. You get

(02:37):
a great job out of all three of your starters
in that series. The bullpen was fantastic. Would you like
to see a little bit more out of the offense,
Sure you would, but it's three games in.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
I'm not going to lose too much sleep over it. Yeah,
I mean I'll take two and one. Red Sox are
one and three, So you'll take two and one anyway
you can get it. Low scoring games, you need more
from the offense. But I'll six innings of Aragetty and
seven innings from Farmer Valdez any day of the week.
And I know Hunter Brown's going to do his thing,

(03:07):
So I uh, I'll take that.

Speaker 5 (03:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
I was at the tournament. It was successful. They ran
a great operation there. Golf course was in great shape,
even with the rain. I was out there Saturday and
it was they were I mean, the players are phenomenal
no matter how you.

Speaker 5 (03:23):
Look at it. But the crowd was energetic.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
And fair, unlike you know times when you're watching other
golf tournaments with their little too loud and thrown stuff
and it's supposed to be rowdy holes like out in Phoenix,
but it was. They did a hell of a job.
And I'm telling you what. You had to hit some shots,
all kinds of shots there, and Minwu tried to give
it away. But the shot of the tournament was his
last second to last one. His hits beyond the green

(03:48):
on eighteen and has to get it somewhere close to
dangerous bogey area and he needed to part to win it,
and he did, and we're going to overtime if he doesn't.
But the chip up there within with tap in for
his first win. Pretty cool. So yeah, Bac back here.
Scheffler's been been runner up and been close and made

(04:10):
that charge and made a bunch of birdies yesterday. Guy's
getting right for what's about to happen in two weeks.
I think he'll be in contention there as well.

Speaker 4 (04:17):
Yeah, he got Scheffler in Woodland, Woodland with a sixty two,
Scheffler with a sixty three. So they go low on
Sunday to put some pressure on lead. But I mean
he as even the chef's hat says he cooked and
he was able to find a way. And I mean
he's a guy that I think gained a lot of
popularity from being on TGL and I know that he's

(04:39):
very active on social media. But I mean a guy
that's now is even he said in his post round
interview where he said, Houston's always going to have a
special place for me because it's his first tour win.

Speaker 6 (04:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
He also a lot of energy, a lot of He
is a guy who's you know, he's an Australian.

Speaker 5 (04:57):
He likes to enjoy himself on the course.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
In his Eve said that the focus of focusing in
for you don't allow distractions or you're so energetic to
basically cost you a tournament. And he mature big maturity
yesterday because he came to the sixteenth hole and hit
one so far right it looked like an amateur shot.
He had a rete, hits it in the rough, finds

(05:20):
his way up there, gets out of that one and
then the rest is history made. He made bogie there.
It could have been a big, much bigger disaster, but
he recovered still one tournament, so good on him.

Speaker 5 (05:31):
The guy hits it a.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
Long way and was able to gather his nerves against
when you got the best player in the world, number
one in the world, chasing you, that's always got to
be intimidating. But to get his first win, and he
and his sister, who's his sister's won a couple of
majors on the LPGA tour.

Speaker 5 (05:46):
So very talented family man. So good on him. Yeah,
it was a good weekend.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
I think you'd probably get I like you, You're talking
about the overall success of the city and the teams,
the assessment that this is that that that was that
impactful this week, and I think you're it makes for
a good argument. I'm sure that some are going to
argue the sports part of it because it doesn't It
didn't equal in either a national championship yet or a title.

(06:10):
But yeah, the energy for me, the thing that I mean,
as good as Houston was in the Astros, it was
all about how the Cougars took care of their business
on Friday and Sunday, and they sure did. And I'm
going to tell you Tennessee, and I know his respect
for Rick Barnes. They held him to sixteen friggin points

(06:30):
in the first half. Sixteen points in the first half.
I mean they were smothering and then you saw yesterday
the blowout as well. Every time they made a little
bit of a run got it down, the Cougars would
respond with a great with a clutch jump shot or
get into the offensive glass or the you know, the

(06:52):
little baby hook or a kiss off the glass. I
mean they just with the big fellows they and the
hustle and the defense of end to knock shots away.

Speaker 5 (07:02):
It just they are relious. If they can knock down shots.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
There's no better defensive team at any level, and I'm
talking about NBA level either, not that they play any
defense anyway, but you take your best guys there. The
Cougar's played as well as anybody. Hintson, what in the
game with Tennessee, If I'm not mistaken, there was Was
it the game of Tennessee or yesterday?

Speaker 5 (07:23):
But where there were.

Speaker 1 (07:26):
There were three defensive player of your candidates on the
floor at the same time between both teams.

Speaker 5 (07:31):
I think it was Tennessee. It was a Tennessee game.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
It was teams play, Yeah, yeah, was similar defense they
get after it. So it was Saturday, yeah, because Tennessee
was a good defensive team and they had a Nate
Smith national defensive player of your candidates, so it was
on the course court there. But you're talking about three cats.
So they played some defense, and I got news for you.
Tennessee's used to play in defense, but they saw defense
played at a different level, especially in that first half

(07:55):
and then in credit impressive weekend and I cannot wait
till next week and we got you know, nobody usually
expects this, but four number one seeds in the finals
done happen, and that often. But you wanted the best,
the four best, and they have played like it. They
sure as hell have, you know, outside of the way
Michigan hung in there for a minute this tournament and
a couple other teams it's hard and Texas Tech damn good.

(08:19):
But these four one seeds are going to be a
tough out no matter who you play. And Kelvin's got
himself his hands full with the first one. That'll be
tough enough, you know, dealing with Duke on Saturday.

Speaker 4 (08:28):
I want to say that the last time this happened
was two thousand and seven, and that final four was
also in San Antonio, So I don't know what it
is about the alamodome of attracting all number ones. But
for the second time that it's ever happened, it's the case.
And now, as you mentioned, it's going to be U
of H taken on Duke. On the other side, you're
going to have Auburn in Florida. As you know, both

(08:49):
of those games, I mean, you know the Auburn game,
the only real drama in it was Jenni Broome going
off the floor. Looked like with the elbow, the ankle, everything, well,
it's not looking good for him. But then he comes
back out there, finishes off the game. The Texas Tech
Auburn game to get all of this started this weekend
was amazing. I mean, it's looking like at a point

(09:11):
we're gonna be seeing the Red Raiders in San Antonio.
I mean, could you have imagined if you had both
Texas Tech and you of H this weekend there, what
that crowd and what that city would have looked like.

Speaker 1 (09:20):
It would have been awesome. And I the way the
resilience that I mean, I mean Tech had it dead
to rights they did, and a furious, furious rundown and
to chase them down because there is one point I thought,
well that'll disrupt the four.

Speaker 5 (09:38):
Number, the one seas.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
That's because that this game looked it looked and I
know you got to play them all, but I'm hens
why you got to do what you do. But Texas
Tech they are really good and Ole Miss is really good,
and We'll coached both teams. They I knew, we knew
how good Tech was all year, and obviously All Miss
showed it because we know Chris Beer can co But

(10:00):
in the Tech game, they I'm gonna tell you there's
no reason had they got into that. There's no reason
to believe they couldn't win the whole thing. They were
really good and they just ran into somebody who was
a little better, a little more resilient in the end,
and that'll that'll bug them, I'm sure all off season.
But we got four really good teams and it's going
to be nasty and different ways. You got superstars, you
got teams that defend, you got teams that are used

(10:21):
to playing in twenty points in front and you know
the but all three of them, you still haven't run
into the defense you're gonna face. You're not scoring ninety
in this final four, at least a Houston's and the opponent.

Speaker 5 (10:35):
So they're just.

Speaker 1 (10:36):
Gonna have to match some of the you know, the shots,
and they did on Sunday. They're the way they knocked,
I mean, the way they match shots and clutch shots
down the stretch when they had to keep the lead.
You know what, it got inside ten to nine, after
it was twenty one points at one point in the
second half, and then they they were it was there
was a phenomenal effort, but you ran into a frigging

(10:58):
really really good defensive team that if they knocked on
shots and stay out of foul trouble, they're gonna be
a tough out.

Speaker 4 (11:05):
Well, I mean, and it was also I think yesterday
the story for the Kougs was the unsung heroes. It
was Tugler, it was Francis, it was Arsenal, those guys
coming in and absolutely being able to give them some
very meaningful minutes.

Speaker 5 (11:19):
And I mean, you talked about it.

Speaker 4 (11:20):
It got to fifty to forty at one point, and
I think if you're a Koog fan watching that, you're
like Gonzaga Purdue, We've seen this.

Speaker 5 (11:28):
Movie kind of play itself out.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
And I mean, I think that if you were in
that building yesterday and you saw get within that ten
point margin. You were like, uh, oh, this is gonna
do it again, isn't it. But then you mentioned it.
It seemed like every single time that happened, you stay uh,
had some sort of response to it. So good on them.
They went by nineteen. They move on to the Final Four.
They're gonna get the second of the two games on

(11:51):
Saturday there in San Antonio. First one will be Auburn
and Florida and then they'll get Duke there for a
chance to move on to what championship Monday, Purdue.

Speaker 1 (12:01):
Purdue is Friday night right now? Yeah, Friday night. I
keep Fridays and Saturdays. And then yesterday, like I said,
doing what he did. But the key to that was
to give them a chance to breathe in the second half.
The way they smothered him in the first half. You know,
they did not wait, They jumped all over them, and
then we're able to stave it off, but clutch shots
when it got to nutcut and time and to keep

(12:21):
that lead and then to give them the comfort at
the end of the game. So we're in for one
hell of a Final.

Speaker 4 (12:25):
Four, absolutely we are, and we will be there on
Saturday at least I will found that out last night,
so I'll be there providing a lot of good content
there on the social media platform for us here. So
hopefully we are talking about a final four Monday the
following Monday there, so a week from now, maybe the

(12:45):
Koug's playing for a national title. We shall see. Let's
talk about the Kougs because it all could have become
unraveled at this point if it wasn't for the genius
of Kelvin Sampson. We'll discuss that here on The Sean
Salisbury Show. Entrepleal Emmanuel Elmoark, Dan Matthews, Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 1 (13:03):

whether you're in it, thinking about it, or even thirty
years away from it, are you doing what's necessary to

(13:24):

with as you prepare for retirement. But think about all
the effort you put into your planet, a vacation or
preparing for something a year from now, are you doing
it in your retirement? People are living longer, and if
you're going to live longer, don't you got to prepare

(14:05):
for more because you want the option in your life
that once you retire that if you want to go
back to retire out of retirement, get out of retirement,
you want to go back to work, you can. But
if you don't want to, that option sits there. Hence
why we call it retirement. And if you want the
best opportunity to get better, go to somebody who will
is experts in their field. And that's tradition wealth. Trasianwealth

Speaker 3 (14:51):
Sean Tellsbury Brian The Shawn Salsbury Show continues. Go on
Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 4 (15:04):
Everybody in the sports world was talking about I saw
Gordy's video from Dike and Park, Joe Aspoda pretty close
with Kelvin Samson, just with you know, both of them
being leaders of teams and they kind of rely upon
each other, and it sounds like there's a pretty big
text thread between the coaches and in his case, manager
here in town where they all kind of have a

(15:25):
little bit of a support group together. But Joe Aspota,
of course wild by the play call, and you just
think about the moment too, where you get the three
to tie it up by Purdue and you've got all
the momentum on their side with that crowd there in
Indianapolis behind them and Kelvin Sampson calms his guys down
in the huddle, says, this is what we're gonna go with.

(15:46):
These are the reads, this is how we're going to
go about this play. And they didn't mark milos Uzan
he inbounds, the ball comes right back in and is
able to have that go ahead put up for the
Koogs to win by two.

Speaker 1 (16:00):
I think it sticks out to me, not only about
this tournament game, but kind of is epitomized too.

Speaker 5 (16:05):
They've been all year.

Speaker 1 (16:06):
Aside from the defense, is that it feels like they've
had different guys win games for them at different nights,
and it's happened in this tournament. Crier, a couple of
games go at five points and you're looking for another star,
and then somebody else has a step up, somebody's in
foul trouble, and then you got the great defensive effort
by one of the great defensive players in the country
yesterday running in to end. It's always somebody and a

(16:28):
lot of times it's not just the guys expected, so
it doesn't surprise me. And it feels like coming out
of timeouts today designed play it happened again yesterday, and
I believe it was Roberts who got the bucket, but
they came out of it, drew up a play coming
out of a time out, Boom executed a perfection finished
at the rim and get the open look, whatever that
might be. He's a brilliant designer. He's got these guys

(16:49):
the buy in and he takes zero for granted. And
I think the detail, the attention to detail that he
puts on this team.

Speaker 5 (16:57):
And he made a point after the game.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
I've constantly said that I think the best teams in
the country obviously don't be in any sport. You don't
beat yourselves, and you're well conditioned, so physical in sports,
well conditioned. You talk about during the summertime, these guys
are out running one hundred yard dashers in the time,
in the heat. And I'm sure a lot of schools
do it, but I can tell you this. You can
tell me they do it, but until I see it

(17:20):
pay off, this school they are there. Can I say
it all the time, but you do not get very
many open looks against them, so you earn every single
every single even when you got to come back, like
you know Tennessee trying to fight back after a sixteen
point half, you start to the grind, and by the
time you get there, just when you get there, they
knock down another shot and you're up. You're down twelve,

(17:43):
and you're down ten, and you're down fourteen, and then
even then they give you no rest. It's like it's
like when the Astros were at their best offensively between
now and back to twenty seventeen, wherever you found that
they were their best game by game and consistency. What
the nineteen team was pretty loaded, then seventeens World Series?

(18:03):
Is it on pitching staffs, You're so by the time
they get to the seventh or eighth guy, I'm sure
the Dodgers getting this would happen with the Dodgers. They
are just wearing you at to the point where you
mentally and emotionally exhausted. It's the same when you're a
quarterback playing against a pressure defense. Now you may get
him and hit him a few times with a big plays.
Now you love pressure because you means you're getting manned

(18:23):
and you got a chance at the big play. But
when you're playing in one of those games where you're
getting hit every single time you drop back, and I've
been in those two playing against the Philadelphia Eagles and
their pressure, you know what you're gonna get. But the
relentless pressure, it's not even the physical, it's the mental
and emotional that goes with having to sustain it for
four quarters, because they do it from the opening, from
the opening snap of a game until they're until they're

(18:45):
done down twenty, up twenty.

Speaker 5 (18:48):
It's the same thing with Houston. It's the same thing
with good teams.

Speaker 1 (18:51):
They're relentless on the on the defensive end, and they
get to the offensive backboards, and that was a problem
for Tennessee early. They just then their second chance points.
You've got to They do not quit playing. I didn't
say play hard, and I didn't say quit playing. I
know they don't quit playing, meaning at a level of
if they're up eighteen or down eighteen, the level is
the same. And I don't find that much in pro teams,

(19:12):
college teams, high school teams. There's this you know, it's
a loser's lament to give up when you're down. I'm
not saying other schools or other teams or pro teams do,
but this team seems to have this weird dynamic or
unique dynamic that that they have staying in the moment,
being down fifteen or fourteen, or twelve or ten or
up eighteen. There's this sniper mentality of we're gonna put

(19:36):
you away, man, even when they're up by eighteen. And
I just I think that it can be so every
time you cross the timeline, somebody is defending you.

Speaker 5 (19:46):
You don't get a chance to breathe.

Speaker 1 (19:48):
It's that coach's son that comes off the bench in
high school that doesn't play much, but when he comes in,
he's got one job to follow you around, and it's
like and he's a good defender, but he didn't play,
and it's like, dude. Then he first starts to frustrate,
and you're like, okay, man, the ball's away from me
and they're dribbling it up the court and they're sitting
right and he's sitting right up in your shorts. And
this is who the Cougars are. And it doesn't matter

(20:09):
if you're a star or not. That's how you're supposed
to play defense. He should go around the country and
people should listen. He should teach how to stay conditioned
and get their team ready, because you cannot do what
they do after all these games. If you're not so conditioned,
I mean world class conditioning, because you will wear out,
and they that is going to be a plus for them.

(20:32):
As long as they knock down shots, they will not
get out. There ain't nobody that's in better shape than
this team here to defend you the whole time.

Speaker 4 (20:39):
It's something that I heard you brought up the Astros example.
It's something that I heard Jake Arietta, former pitcher, he
had mentioned on a podcast after they won the World
Series in twenty two that still sticks with me.

Speaker 5 (20:49):
And his line was they just don't lose.

Speaker 4 (20:51):
And some people on the surface hear that and they say, well,
of course, yeah, they won. No, his point is they
don't beat themselves. Like that's what his point is. That's
what this U of H team does. They just do
not get themselves into prolonged mistakes that end up dooming
them in the end.

Speaker 1 (21:09):
And the thing with that too is that you you know,
I mean, there's this scar, tissu or whatever is built
up that there's there's whatever that kicks in and they
are I guess, relentless however you use it. But not
beating yourself has a lot to do with good conditioning.

Speaker 5 (21:28):
It really does.

Speaker 1 (21:29):
And also when when somebody says that they don't beat
there's a difference between wanting to you know, not get beat,
you want to win, but refusal to lose. That's what
they have Jordan had the great there's a refusal to lose.
Now you're gonna get beat once in a while, but
we all don't. Nobody wants to lose, but the we
all want to win. But the refusal and the sacrifice
you got to make. And you get back to, oh,

(21:50):
they don't beat themselves, Well, why I can tell you this.
When people are either physically exhausted, because you you know,
when you're when you're down and tired and physically exhausted
said what did Vince Lombardi say? What physical exhaustion makes
a coward out of all of us?

Speaker 5 (22:04):
Or something? Meaning fatigue?

Speaker 1 (22:06):
Right, And it does because what happens the physical fatigue
really starts to affect the mental fatigue. They don't have
that problem because they are not you know, gasping for air.
They there their rotation, the way they play defense, and
the number of bodies that play it hard that they are,
that's how they're going to beat you. And when you're
mentally when you're physically tough and you're you're not fatiguing,

(22:28):
it doesn't affect you mentally, so they don't allow that
to get in away.

Speaker 5 (22:31):
That's not the case for every team.

Speaker 1 (22:32):
How many times you've been tired in an event and
you just couldn't close the way you wanted to, no
matter what it is. Pick playing with your buddy tired
on the golf course, you walked eighteen holes from once
in in midd of the summer, and then all of
a sudden you're up by two strokes with the buddy
and it's one hundred dollars bet and you're like, my
legs are tired. I mean even it's elementary stuff like that.
I'm just telling you that their conditioning is going to work.

(22:53):
It has worked wonders for them.

Speaker 5 (22:55):
They will.

Speaker 1 (22:56):
There's no team in America that's in better condition them.
Now they've got a knock down shots like they did
the clutch to stay somebody off, and then you move
on to the final four, and that's exactly what happened.

Speaker 4 (23:05):
You mentioned about programs trying to bring in Kelvin Sampson, Well,
it sounds like that's probably gonna have to wait until
after he's done coaching, because I remember being at one
of his coaches shows, Sean, and he said, throughout his
entire career, he's never once seen another college's practices, only
his own. He's seen pros, he's seen high schools. He's
never seen another college practice. So if that's the case,

(23:26):
like I said, it's gonna have to be on the
retirement circumfact.

Speaker 1 (23:29):
I like his style. Do you do your thing, We'll
catch you when my retirement's over. I can go to
the other ones. But I'm sure plenty of high school
and NBA stuff. But he's got a plan, and boy
do they put the plan to work. And I can't
wait to see it next Saturday and hopefully Monday night.

Speaker 5 (23:43):
There we go, your lips of God's ears.

Speaker 4 (23:45):
We'll hope that that is indeed the conclusion when it's
all said and done, Arthur John, see you guys right there.

Speaker 5 (23:50):
We'll get to you on the other side.

Speaker 4 (23:52):
Also, we've in some astros conversation here as the show
rolls along. Steve Sparks coming up at eight o'clock for
his weekly visit here on the Sewn Salisbury Show. Just
getting started here on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 1 (24:02):
Hey, guys, doctor wits at Jeff witz at witzet vision
dot com for your Lasik care, your eye care. I
think he's the best on the planet, and friends that
have used him feel the same way. And the reason
I can say that is I'm obviously one of his
patients and he did my eyes and it wasn't on
the table along we walked through all the protocols and
all the necessary testing to make sure you qualify with

(24:24):
your eyes. And then a couple of days after I've
seen him better than I have since the prime of
my vision wasn't on the table long. It was non invasive,
and the aftercare was spectacular and not what it's about.

Speaker 5 (24:33):
You don't want to wear contacts and glasses.

Speaker 1 (24:35):
You want to free yourself up and you know, work
out a payment plan, get that done, and there's always
something going good for you. The one thing I do
know is when you come out of there, you'll be
grateful you did it. And we've got the best, and
he's right here in our town. You don't have to
leave the state. Used to have to leave the state
to do stuff like you know, find somebody better.

Speaker 5 (24:51):
Well, we got him right here.

Speaker 1 (24:52):
You don't have to leave to go get the foremost
Lasik procedure doctor on the planet. And this isn't you know,
an assembly line where they just want to get you
through one hundred of these a day so that they
can just roll through the money. That's not doctor whitstt
It's personal care and he does care in the aftercare,
his attention to detail. Treat your eyes like you treat
his owners. On family, it's wits Advision dot Com, Witsdvision

(25:14):
dot com seven one three three six five ninety seven
ninety nine seven one three three six five ninety seven
ninety nine, the best in the business. And if you're
tired of wearing contacts and glasses, get a hold of
the guy. He's the best doctor Jeff Witson at wits
it Vision dot Com.

Speaker 3 (25:29):
And we're for the Shawn Salisbury Show continues.

Speaker 5 (25:35):
Again.

Speaker 4 (25:35):
If you want to get in on the phone lines
at seveone three two one two five seven ninety seven
one three two one two five seven ninety That's where
Arthur gets us started this morning.

Speaker 5 (25:44):
Arthur, what's going on?

Speaker 2 (25:45):
Good morning man?

Speaker 6 (25:47):
Yeah, I wanna yeah.

Speaker 7 (25:49):
I want to say uh first before I get to
the Cougars. Todd Golden uh, Florida head coach.

Speaker 5 (25:54):
Put check on the line.

Speaker 7 (25:56):
Who shot fifty three percent and Florida shot ninety three
was genius? Man should be done more when as it
pertains to all leagues.

Speaker 3 (26:06):
Now to the Kugs, all.

Speaker 7 (26:09):
Right, man, I know these guys are extremely young, but
the way that these guys guard is impeccable.

Speaker 2 (26:14):
Man, they're uncanny.

Speaker 7 (26:16):
I mean, the perimeter defense is second or none. And
like previous Cougars teams, including five Slamba Jemma, they have
a plethora of guys who can really shoot the ball.
And Dukes should be more worried about us, not the
other way around. And Matt Thomas, if you're going to play,
do play by play please, man, do it right?

Speaker 5 (26:37):
My goodness, do you explain that a little bit?

Speaker 7 (26:42):
Man, because some of he make a lot of errors man,
whether it be with.

Speaker 8 (26:46):
The score, with the calling of the game or nothing.

Speaker 5 (26:49):
But nah, one, that's corny.

Speaker 9 (26:51):
Man.

Speaker 5 (26:51):
You need to come up with something up.

Speaker 7 (26:53):
More genius, more more, uh, just something a bit more better.

Speaker 4 (27:01):
Man.

Speaker 7 (27:02):
He has a lot of errors.

Speaker 5 (27:04):
Man, when he called a game.

Speaker 8 (27:05):
I know I'm not.

Speaker 7 (27:06):
Saying he don't do a good job, but there are times, man,
when he seems like he's out of touch.

Speaker 6 (27:11):
He needs to.

Speaker 8 (27:12):
Come up and be with.

Speaker 7 (27:13):
Something more unique. That's what I'm looking for, more unique
than the way you call the game. Should I have
Cavin Murphy doing play by play before I would have
had Matt Thomas.

Speaker 4 (27:25):
Arthur For my money, I think Matt Thomas does a
fantastic job. It's live radio mistakes happen. I'm not going
to hold somebody to the fire for you know, nitpicks
here and there, and that's that kind of sounds like it.

Speaker 5 (27:36):
That's what you're doing with them?

Speaker 6 (27:37):
Man.

Speaker 2 (27:39):
Well, man, I'm just calling it like I like.

Speaker 7 (27:41):
I hear it when I when I'm listening to him,
I try to give him, give him a chance. I'm
not saying he do a he gets an F, but
I give him a C minus at best.

Speaker 4 (27:50):
All right, Yeah, I appreciate Arthur. No, Matt Thomas does
a fantastic a lot.

Speaker 1 (27:54):
More than that, rightfully, so, he's been doing it a while.
He's pretty damn good at his job. He's very good
at his job and versatile as well. Right, absolutely so.

Speaker 4 (28:03):
No, Matt Thomas is the guy on the call, and
we love Matt Thomas on the call.

Speaker 5 (28:07):
He does a fantastic job.

Speaker 4 (28:08):
And last night, having a lot of fun in this season,
having a lot of fun. But I mean, you know,
he was talking a little bit about that Texas Tech
Florida game where Tech had the lead with think, what
were they up by eleven twelve ten, something like that
with about two and a half minutes left to go.

Speaker 1 (28:23):
Well, at one point it was I want to say
it was sixteen points at the fifteen minute mark, fourteen
minute mark, and then it got down flirted with at
eleven nine, but felt like it was the fourteen to
fifteen minute mark. It was at sixteen points that they
had a lead, if I'm not mistaken. In the second

(28:44):
half and watching that game, and it then the resiliency
of the which I thought the last ten games was
about as good as there was in the country. The
way that Florida was playing, I mean, I guess Duke
can make the argument, so con Houston, and hellso can all.
Although Auburn got beat late in the season, but it

(29:04):
was it was a hell of an effort to come
back and win that game because I thought they were
dead to rights. There were sixteen points, fifteen fourteen, sixteen
points with less than fifteen minutes to go. It felt
like all they had to do is just well kind
of stay the course.

Speaker 4 (29:18):
And I mean, you know you're talking about it where
you need stops, you need to be able to knock
down shots. Both of those are givens. But I mean
to the point too that Arthur brought up. Sometimes if
you've got a team over there on the other side,
where maybe you have an assistant Sean pull you aside
and say, hey, coach, you know they've missed five free throws,
like they're not necessarily a lock from there, maybe we

(29:38):
kind of start going to the hacka approach here. Send
them to the line. Maybe they knocked down one of two,
maybe they missed both of them. That's a chance for
us to be able to cheat some points out of this.

Speaker 1 (29:47):
Thing, no doubt, absolutely no doubt, and strategy paid off.
There's tell you what if you take a look at
the coaches here in this the strategy, whatever strategy that
is that they use, and you can sit there and
walk how people went about it and how you talked
about this strategy against Texas Tech, pretty good exces and
know as coaches we have here they get it. Now

(30:09):
let's see experience you start to go Bruce Pearl's been
doing it a long time. The truth is you get
the old school in a semi new school. You know,
with Duke's coach, who's been I almost feel like he's
been coaching twenty years, because maybe Duke is just that feeling.
But he's done a great job and we obviously see
the way Florida is playing.

Speaker 5 (30:29):
This is going to be a fun watch man.

Speaker 1 (30:31):
And if you think coaching doesn't matter, I think coaching
college basketball coaching. When it comes to coaching basketballs, I
think it's far more impactful on a player than coaching
the NBA. Meaning they're put it this way, they'll check
out on an NBA coach in a hurry. You don't
check out very rarely on a college basketball coach unless

(30:53):
the program's going to hell and handbasket with the guy's
on his well. But you're sure s I'll not checking
out when you're talking to guys like Calvin Sampson and
Bruce and people we've seen in this and their impact
on the game and they're just one simple play the
draw up there. Their impact is far deeper, in my opinion,
than an NBA coach.

Speaker 5 (31:11):
And it's a really, excuse me, an unenviable position.

Speaker 1 (31:16):
In game adjustment stuff that's not the preparation in game adjustment.

Speaker 4 (31:20):
But for John Shire, I mean, you take over for
a legend like Coach K, people expect it to still
look like when Coach K was there. Credit to him, man,
I mean he goes out, gets Cooper flag, he keeps
this thing going and has Duke right back into the
final four. There's a lot of coaches that I think
would have looked at that situation if asked, hey, do
you want to take over for Shozhski, that have been like, no,
I'm good here at Villanova, Now I'm good here at

(31:40):
wherever I'm at.

Speaker 1 (31:41):
Sometimes people are afraid of success and in the comparisons
that you'll never be able to live to Shozhski. But
how do you feel the other shoes and make it different?
And John looks like a Shi looks like he's trying
to do that with that though, real quick about Duke.
Another one Flagg the night bef on Saturday. There was
a Friday night, right was it?

Speaker 5 (32:00):
Friday Night?

Speaker 1 (32:02):
When he had scored thirty comes back and he was
a compliment in this game and a great player, but
you saw the involvement of another team that he didn't
have to score, just like Crier, you know, getting history.
They didn't have to score every basket when somebody else can.
And now going to the final four, can your stars

(32:24):
come up short and you still win? I guess it
depends on how well you play the other end and
how well the other team stars are playing. But those
those stars will put it this way, You're gonna have
a hard time unless you play like they do defensively.
Crier getting five points in winning and you know, the
Final four and winning the national championship next Monday. But

(32:46):
in a low scoring game, those things can still exist
and nobody as the points. Wise, this kept teams in
a lower scoring situation this whole year than the University
of Houston. So just teams finding different ways to win.
And there athletes and some physicality in this. But the
one thing, and I know they all know it, that
it goes through that defensive stops and our caller earlier

(33:08):
it's not I mean you worry about Duke, but Duke
trying to get some open looks against University of Houston,
that's gonna be a problem for them. And then how
you're going to match up and stay out of foul
trouble when you've got to defend flag on the perimeter
and he can get to the rim. Two for a
guy six' nine six' ten who can put the ball on,
the deck you've got to stay out of foul trouble
because that then it becomes.

Speaker 5 (33:28):
A problem they need. Their bigs then.

Speaker 4 (33:30):
You got con cannopl k O. N kannepel i think
is how you say, His NAME but i saw. KO
n i, was like who names their Son, con.

Speaker 1 (33:38):
Yeah kannepl he was and he played his ass off.
This pad that guy can he's a he is an
under and he was another big reason why they were
able to take steps as well the, other guys and
he is going to be a big part of if
they're going to. Get in great, guard play as we,
well know is a big part OF winning NC two,
a championship and all four teams that take the Floor,
on saturday they've they've got guard play that can.

Speaker 4 (34:00):
Take over it's gonna, be fun no doubt, about it
and hopefully we will have a lot, of red white
and black there Inside the Alamodome. On saturdays speaking of,
good stuff over, the Weekend the astros able to ride
this momentum to a series win Against. The mets does
it translate? All season we'll discuss. Right Here Sean, Salisbury

(34:21):
Show sports talk seven.

Speaker 5 (34:22):
To Ninety.

Speaker 3 (34:25):
The Sean salisbury, show continues, and now, You.

Speaker 8 (34:30):
Know.

Speaker 4 (34:33):
Sean we've been talking a lot About the koogs here,
early on and for. Good reason But the stros getting
things going. This weekend as. You, know thursday a little
bit nerve wracking there at the End With, josh hater
but able to Hold Off juan soto In the mets
to win that one three. To One the bats Silent on,
Friday night you're only able to squeeze a squeeze across,

(34:56):
one Run But hunter brown gives up a couple of
runs there in, the Second the soto solo home run in,
the third but, you know just not able to Overtake
the mets in. That one and then you only needed
Two on saturday to be able to win. That one
but the constant that was All, weekend thursday you get
From er valdez goes, seven innings had the grind through

(35:18):
much of that. Seven innings it wasn't until later that
he kind of just really took control of. That Game
hunter brown, seven strikeouts outstanding and he has just those
couple of blemishes of innings And Then spencer raghetti unbelievable
in his start six innings out, of him only one
hit the, entire game not only, from him but The

(35:39):
entire astros. Pitching staff that's one of those that you
kind of look.

Speaker 5 (35:43):
At it through.

Speaker 4 (35:44):
Three games pitching is usually ahead of hitting early on.
The season it's kind of like football when teams get the,
training camp the defense is ahead of, the offense and
then eventually it all. Catches up but as long as
you're pitching like this and for some of the wards
That the astros might, have offensively you've got still feel
pretty good about what this team. Can bring and when
it's all said, and, DONE.

Speaker 5 (36:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (36:05):
I was i think that the health of the, pitching
staff you always wonder what's going. TO happen i think
it's still the strength of the team as, you Saw
And hunter brown Will be you'll get a lot of
great starts out of him. This Year If spencer arigett
he's act good as your three and, does that gets
through six innings and keeps that ball in the ballpark

(36:26):
and continues to elevate like, he has this staff's gonna.
Be dangerous, they are and they've. Carried him really two
of the last, THREE years i think it's been it's
been about the starting pitching and quite frankly bullpen a
couple of years ago when they were as good a
bullpen as there was. In baseball, You know so while
it's not pretty and the offense is going to have,
to improve it's hard to expect pitching staffs to give

(36:48):
up two in one run and, you know, keep there
keep that down. Below three and pitching usually is ahead
of hitting now and hitting will catch up because this league,
loves offense and eventually. It'll happen but, the, runs well,
the frustration the, timely hitting it's just a reminder of
what we missed last year. Early on but it's three,

(37:08):
games in you're two. And one there's already a team
that was supposed to Be A world. Series team it's one,
and three and the way they look at the Way
The texas, rangers started they're three. And one so one
weekend gets, into it but you don't want, to get,
you know settled into this is who our. Offense is
they're going to find the right remedy and guys will.
Come through and it, is early BUT if i can
get my pitching staff to do what they, did there

(37:30):
you will be because they didn't play great baseball in
any of, them offensively none. OF them, i mean they
got some hits and a timely one here, and there
but they didn't they didn't, dominate offensively obviously from we
can see from the scores of. The game so what
what they do come away with six runs to total over? The,
weekend yeah? Six total so and that that's not who
they're going. To live they're not going to. Live there

(37:51):
but if you're going to come up with six runs
and end up two and one Against a mets team
that's it's, pretty loaded a playoff, caliber team and you're
starting Pitching and sam's, You Know hunter brown will who
will dominate plenty of games. This YEAR if i told
you that was the way the first three games are
going to, work out defensively and on the, pitching staff,

(38:12):
you'd say even with, the hater, you know Like oh
man and, You know brady walking some people and hater in,
game one but they got, through it especially. Starting pitching you,
Just said i'll take it if THAT'S what i got To,
sacrifice hunter or not getting into six innings and doing.
His thing i'll, take IT and i will take. It
offensively they obviously know it's they're going to find the.
Right remedy but that's going to change because bats were

(38:34):
a problem last year, pitching staff but to expect them
to hold people to two and three runs every single
time you go out is going to be. Too much
but it's only three, games in so we'll.

Speaker 2 (38:43):
Take.

Speaker 4 (38:43):
It well and you know last year it was four
games in and you still didn't have. A win you
had to get a no hitter Out Of renol blanco
to get your first win of, the season and it
was the middle of this coming week is when you
finally got your. Second wins so that's a plus already
in its. Own, right yeah never go broke taking. A
profit and to, my knowledge they're one game over. Five hundred,

(39:04):
so yes you may not like the looks, of it
but if you get, THIS pitching i think we all
know that the hitting is going.

Speaker 1 (39:12):
To increase that you know that they're going to put
the ball in play and that the long ball will
show up and people will start to. Settle In BUT
i'm i would put it. This way would you rather
have them be nine to? Eight losses or nine to.

Speaker 5 (39:24):
Eight win.

Speaker 1 (39:26):
We're in three straight games where seven eight nine runs
were given up by. The staff which one do you
feel like you can deal with earlier successful pitching and
struggling to hit or flip that and say pitching. Was atrocious,
but man we WERE raking i would take. This, WAY
yeah i. Definitely, pitch, yeah no he. Definitely DO and

(39:48):
i mean we talked about. The Starters steven okerk. Comes
in he only needs twelve Pitches on. FRIDAY nights, i
mean you, know PEOPLE and i was hosting the tenth
inning SHOW and i, was asked who's your seventh? INNING guy, i,
Said well steve ok gives you a look. LIKE that
i think it's Hard to you're hard pressed to not
look at that guy in the seventh where you can, go, left.
Right left they're in the seven. Eight nine and if

(40:10):
he's able to have performances, like that that's what you
need at a high. Leverage, spose well until he, proves different.
WHY not, i mean he's he's. GIVEN them i mean he,
was Impressive and i'm. With you plus you you're exactly
right with the side of the, you know as a,
left hander and you go lefty right.

Speaker 5 (40:29):
He lefty it's a.

Speaker 1 (40:30):
Good THING but i still think that that seventh inning
is just going to be situational baseball. FOR now i
don't know if they're GOING to, I mean i think
you'd probably like to settle in on. One guy but
as we Talked To steve sparks will visit with him
at eight, o'clock today. IS you i would imagine you're
going to see a few more bodies in that role,
at Times depending but as long as the eight and
nine are doing their thing and you can get, TO

(40:51):
that i don't care who.

Speaker 5 (40:52):
It is but you are.

Speaker 1 (40:53):
So right he pitched and comes out, of guarded they
would have. Had this this is a Body it if
this continues to, count on the depth that, he'll add
especially in, that bullpen will, be huge huge.

Speaker 5 (41:06):
For them and.

Speaker 4 (41:07):
Even more good news yesterday from the. Left, side yeah that,
Is huge but even more good News from. Sugarland yesterday
lance mccullor's junior two innings on the mounds said he
could have gone a third strikes out the side in
his very.

Speaker 5 (41:19):
First inning, take it regardless of who.

Speaker 1 (41:22):
It's against that means he was throwing strikes and guys
were having, you know, confusing them which is a good
thing because those guys are one step away from playing,
up here and we know how, That goes so good.
On him talk about in addition to the bullpen and possibly,
starting pitching depending on but at least addition to the
bullpen to. Start out he will be if he's able
to continue that way and stay healthy and get swings

(41:45):
and misses and get people out with the way that
he's done it in the past when he's. Been healthy
i'm anxious to see with this season at the end,
of it what we're saying About. LANCEMA colors i think
it's one of, the, WELL yeah i think it's a,
wild CARD and i don't think any of. US know
I don't i KNOW what i. HOPE for i don't
know it's going to be two innings and. A sore
i always wonder what the after effect is or Is this,
lance mccullors that it's finally back to, being HIM and

(42:08):
i think it'll be a big part of his not
only his, future here but how this, team responds especially
when it adds that kind, of depth big, impressive well and.

Speaker 4 (42:16):
Also see what happens when You Get forrest Whitley Back
caleb ort guys that at least in, orcs case did
some really good work for you. Last year And, with
whitley it's still kind of a book is still being written,
with him so we'll see if those guys were able
to contribute in twenty.

Speaker 5 (42:30):
Twenty five we.

Speaker 4 (42:32):
Mentioned the offensive part of things For the astros. This
weekend one thing that people might look at as, A
concern i actually think you can look at as.

Speaker 5 (42:41):
A positive we'll discuss that.

Speaker 4 (42:42):

great over, the weekend and that was. THE bats, I
Mean jose altuve pretty much the only consistent bat That

(45:50):
the astros had in, the lineup but all singles OUT
of L Two v as a matter, of fact you
had two extra base hits and they were all in,
one game and consequently they were both. For runs where
you Had The jeremy penia solo home run to get
the run, scoring started and then you had, The Uh
JORDAN alvarez rbi double that you thought had a chance

(46:10):
to get out there to deep right, center field but
still able to Bring A estac perettis in for the
eventual go ahead and winning run in. That GAME but
I mean perettis so so this weekend he does pick
up his first hit As, an astro And Then, christian
walker who got one hit the. Entire weekend that was
a Single On opening day that did come off the

(46:32):
bat at one eleven point four according To, stat cast
but a couple of key Strikeouts, on friday and also
didn't record a hit On at saturday Against the mets
in the final game of. The SERIES but I mean
i mentioned that single that he had one eleven off
the BAT, one, o two, one ten one oh two
point nine ninety seven point nine. Ninety eight still hitting

(46:56):
the ball hard and eventually that does lead to.

Speaker 5 (46:58):
Good, Things yeah i'm not Worried About.

Speaker 1 (47:01):
Christian walker you hit that hard a, weekend series he
come away with, A hit i'm not concerned. ABOUT him,
i mean if we're all starting to bury guys, because they,
you know had a, tough weekend it's way way too
early and too cold out, in someplace although it's not
cold here for people to worry About If, christian walker
it's that the bat's not the result of him just

(47:22):
Yet that i'm especially. This, soon listen if a guy
had three hits and they were blue pits and he's
late swinging through the strike zoning and lucked his way,
into three you would hope that he'd even walk away from,
that saying you, KNOW what i got to get what
at the time and get my, hands through MAKE sure
i stay in with the. Front Shoulder that i'm, not losing,
you know, off balance and then there's a guy who

(47:42):
smokes it and comes away with. One hit, everybody's, like wow,
what's wrong, Nothing's wrong he's hitting. It Fine so I'm
that the, truth is the key is when they get
runners in. Scoring position they didn't have a lot of
them in the extra basis. The Slugging dana brown's talked
about that in the past to be able to get.
The hints white alt two vas in leftfield and he
got another bat and went out and. Got paratus and
You Hope christian walker's the addition and that, You Know

(48:05):
cam smith and some others can provide that pop that you're,
gonna need because it's going to be a long season in.
This league when two and one and three in, one
games that's just you don't, live, There unfortunately and if,
you do you better hope you're on the three side
of it with great pitching that, stays healthy and you
better hope that your team's just going through a lull
because it's hard to live there the whole year and

(48:27):
hard to put that kind of pressure on your. Pitching
staff but one series in you take two, to one
ugly two, And one sure sounds a lot Better, than
man we. Roped it we just came away with. No
wins i'll take this start MORE than i will. Last
year's but they're going to have to find whatever that.
Lineup is the slugging's going to have to, come alive but.
It will the key for me is the depth of
how deep they got into, the game and both the

(48:48):
first and third Starts with arraghetty obviously in, start Three
and fromber getting the seven innings and one you can
live there now and then you don't tax. A, BULLPEN well, i.

Speaker 4 (48:58):
Mean here's a place they lived in last year that
was not a good place To be singles and solo
home runs like it seemed like that was the twenty
Twenty four astros batting order to, a t and so
far early on in twenty twenty five that is. THE case,
i mean the moral of the, Story, is sean you're
going to have to be Able to you got a
couple of guys on put one over the wall or

(49:19):
at least, you know rope one down either the right
or left. Field line bring those guys in and you say,
to yourself, all right we flip a game with hits,
like that singles and solo home runs don't.

Speaker 1 (49:29):
Do well this is, EXACTLY why, i mean Why Is
cam smith in the lineup the explosive bat that he
can give you you Know what. Jordan brings they went
out And Got. Christian, walker listen for two, Straight Years
dana brown has, been saying and we've heard in the
past when things aren't, going well and what is the
one thing We've been there's. Two things there's really three

(49:51):
over the last two years in the. Everyday play power
from the outfield Not Named, kyle tucker you know who's.
Our centerfielder are getting that production from outfield positions with
a bat that Weren't Named. Kyle, tucker now they survived
it over seventy games or so when he was hurt
but not playing, long ball but by moving people around

(50:11):
and they just were able to survive it and got
some clutch from some.

Speaker 5 (50:13):
Other people so you've been asking.

Speaker 1 (50:15):
For that two is you've, been begging begging for a,
corner infielder in particular at first base to supply pop.
And power we've been asking for that and they've been asking,
and ASKING and i think they finally went and. Got
IT and i DON'T think i don't know anybody that
can argue with going To Get christian walker did what,
he's done how highly regarded he Was in arizona and

(50:37):
what he brings to the table and the ball does
it sounds different off his bat as you can tell
in the, first series even though he only came away
with what one hit to show.

Speaker 8 (50:46):
For it that.

Speaker 1 (50:46):
Will change and then the last thing is that we constantly,
hear about is that slugging or the ability to move
runs across when you've got runners in scorn positioner. On
base and last year that was a detriment that was
the cuivalent of this team's offensive line. In football it
really was not saying, the players but the production was

(51:07):
similar expectations high production. Fell off your team got better,
around you you get the offensive line production. Went Off,
here listen you start to look around And when tucker
was healthy and when you have THE the dh roll in,
your done And when alvarez and Then when paynya And

(51:28):
when bregman's, out there, YOU start, i, say okay this,
is something but it was always stopped last year by allowing,
you know a pop fly to, first base, you know a,
check swing anything that you just. Weren't clutch and then
finally it's kind of three and three and a half
or four of them is that we've been begging for
the last two years and it finally changed, last year
and at times is for offensive production at the, catcher's

(51:50):
position and now you've got two guys that, can hit
so that goes. Into it so the pop in the,
outfield corner infield in particular, first base the ability with
that as a team to get runners across in, scoring
position because great teams do they don't leave guys standing
out there a lot, of times and that was a
big problem. Last year and then production offensively at the,
catcher's position and last year they, got it and we

(52:13):
expect even more From The iron Das And victor kartini
has got to be as good and versatile as a
backup catchers there as in, the league not only defensively
when we can play first base, and catcher but also
a bat that hits the ball tall fields and is
a really good. Plate protector so, for me those things
and think, about it they're all, offensive woes all offense

(52:34):
for pitching. Right now, in truth it's settling in, and finding,
you know defining roles for the middle part of the
bullpen making Sure a brave's settles back into eight and
that hater gets to be like He's A milwaukee brewer
guy again and at times here and then starting pitching.
Staying healthy really it's not are they effective when? They're
healthy these guys are pretty. Damn good so.

Speaker 5 (52:56):
It's going to.

Speaker 1 (52:56):
Hinge health and. OFFENSIVE production i think that the pitch
are going to be.

Speaker 5 (53:00):
JUST fine. I do they're well cod managed and well
coach and they utilize.

Speaker 1 (53:05):
Them right you just don't want the middle of that
bullpen to be taxed because and early on getting seven
and six innings from two of your, three starters which
We Expect hunter brown to be the. SAME guy i
think that you'll live with that in the first home home,
SERIES here. I do andy wants to weigh in here
On The Sean. Salisbury, show andy what's?

Speaker 6 (53:22):
Going, on yeah before we.

Speaker 11 (53:24):
Talked about, THE astros i would love to pick up.
With speed that was the only position group that needed
to be added to on. The defense now look for
the first four picks to go all offense in. The
draft now, That goes i'll tell you what you gotta
Love Jose al touvay well without you know any other

(53:47):
guy you might want to. Worry about is this gonna pick,
his bat this switch the water off. His back he's
the only one really hitting on. The team, this guy
you got to love. His attitude heired to Someone like Divers.
With boston WHO'S the. Gm screwed they screwed Up that
breckman pick up because they didn't they Didn't confront devis

(54:10):
about BEING A dh and look what he's done. SO
far i think you set a record for the most
strikeouts in the first three games in. The league that guy's.
Not Happy and i'll tell, you what he's not a.
Team player it wouldn't put it past me that he's
just doing this. ON purpose i wouldn't put it past
a guy, like that kind Of like Tunzel when, tunzell

(54:31):
said all the referees are picking, on me all.

Speaker 6 (54:34):
The flags throwing. On him those guys just play.

Speaker 11 (54:37):
For themselves they don't give a rats ass about. The team, But,
hey sean the one thing that you worry about With The,
houston Astros and i'll tell you what Mine Is Mon teter,
because look he had the great year the year before
when we before we picked, him up but he also
had some not so good years and kind of kind

(54:59):
of like, MONT.

Speaker 6 (55:01):
So i Just hot hatter is the one who scares me.

Speaker 1 (55:04):
This year let me ask you real quick AND and
i know you're not comparing Him to montero because when
you look at the body, of work haters in a whole.
Different league but, Real, quick andy before we get to
break is when will?

Speaker 5 (55:16):
YOU know i know you're concerned.

Speaker 1 (55:18):
About him when will, You, say okay the year plus,
EXPERIMENTS done i don't want.

Speaker 5 (55:23):
This anymore when are you going to?

Speaker 6 (55:24):
Say?

Speaker 11 (55:24):
THAT uh i don't want Him, ANY yeah i mean
you're you're not?

Speaker 1 (55:30):
There yet are you still? To me he had, A lot,
i know yet he had some stressful situation. Last year
you're not there, yet?

Speaker 5 (55:35):
Though? Right, well yeah well he Was in.

Speaker 11 (55:37):
Hot three he was like, brief, fit brief fitty above
all last year, eight losses four.

Speaker 6 (55:44):
Blown saves you can't.

Speaker 8 (55:46):
Have, that?

Speaker 5 (55:46):
Again right so when will?

Speaker 6 (55:48):
You?

Speaker 5 (55:48):
Know when when will you when will it?

Speaker 6 (55:50):
Hit you?

Speaker 1 (55:51):
How many how many appearances in are you going to
say okay if it's struggled, sixty games the.

Speaker 8 (55:57):
Like?

Speaker 1 (55:59):
Twenty appearances his type? For him, you know a couple
of ten fifteen type? Save, situations yeah, and, yeah yeah ten.

Speaker 11 (56:07):
Or fifteen he's got to be thirteen out of, fifteen
saves fourteen out.

Speaker 6 (56:11):
Of fifteen that's what they're paying. Him for he's the
second highest paid closer in. The, league yeah they're. Paying
him they're paying him for a ninety. Closure rate that's
what he's getting. Paid for so that's what he's got.

Speaker 4 (56:24):
To do absolutely. Appreciate, It Brother, thanks andy you' got
to get to a. Break HERE but, i mean bloone
staves are going. To happen i'm not going to throw
that at the Feet Of josh hater and say that
this is a precursor of what's. TO come I, mean
saturday he gives up the lead off Walk To juan
soto and then he settles in and is able to
get the next three. Guys out what's the goal of
the closer get. The save he's two for two in.

(56:44):
THOSE opportunities i think the thing that for people is
we always want to. Be clean the, truth is when
all is said, and done if you can get the
save and get out of it and win and take
care of the win and close it out for the.

Speaker 5 (56:59):
Person who's got, the win there you're going or you're in.

Speaker 1 (57:01):
A situation where it's tie, ball game you keep it
tied because they just need you haven't worked in a couple,
of days whatever. It is but to get, to save
put himself in position to preserve. That win that is,
his job and, you're right doesn't just fall at. His
FEET but i also know THIS that i think for,
fans perspective even if they're, getting saves if it doesn't,
look clean it. Bugs us and it's more for us

(57:22):
that We Are oh. I'm stressed oh you walk the lead,
Off guy now. You're stressed it's, just stress, right right
it's the stress levels that. Gets you but if he
keeps going on and finds a way to get. It
done the truth is most closers puts you in a.
Stressful way they.

Speaker 8 (57:35):
Just do they.

Speaker 1 (57:36):
JUST do i mean they'll they'll get it with, oh man, Blue,
pit okay then then a walk and then they. GET
up i mean it's Rarely now rivera, doesn't exist but
clean saves on a. Regular basis it's tough, to do
but it feels better for us. As fans the key
is to get in and get out and get. It
done but what happens you keep flirting with that stuff
and eventually in a clutch game at backfires, on YOU

(57:57):
and i think That's where andy's going.

Speaker 5 (57:59):
With that speaking of, things backfiring have you ever made
a really expensive mistake that cost you in?

Speaker 8 (58:03):
The?

Speaker 5 (58:03):
Wallets yeah more?

Speaker 4 (58:07):
Than one, all, right well let's see how expensive, it
was or in this case here how expensive.

Speaker 5 (58:12):
It was that's coming up. Right Here Sean. Salisbury show.

Speaker 3 (58:17):
Back, to It, h town, carry, one now Bring, the jews.
Let's Go The Sean salisbury show continues Definitely On sports talk.

the mets over the Weekend And Min woon lee winning at,
the show he or, excuse Me The Texas Children houston

(59:24):
Open all habits, die hard but twenty under to Hold
Off scottie Scheffler In gary woodland to win. That one,
last Week, though sean the tour Was, in tampa and
it was a tournament that had one moment that still sticks,
with people and Pro Golfer. Adam hadwin he had a
moment where sometimes people in the gallery when this happens

(59:47):
will start chanting one, of us one of, us, like
yeah you look like one of us, out there where
you hit a shot that probably by your standards is,
not great but for probably most of us ham, and agers,
you know The weekend warriors, were, like eh, you know
not a, great shot but still not. The worst well
had when after he hit, his wedge pretty upset, about

(01:00:08):
it and he was walking back towards his bag and
just happened to be a sprinkler head, right there slammed
his wedge to. The ground sprinkler head, goes off starts,
Spraying EVERYWHERE and i think my favorite part of all
of that was him trying to like tamp it, back, down,
like hey You know i've done, this NOW now i
need to try to find a way to turn this. Saw,

(01:00:29):
off well then the grounds crew has to. Come out they've,
got to, you know be able to shut, it off,
repair it do whatever they need.

Speaker 5 (01:00:35):
To do now he's.

Speaker 1 (01:00:36):
Soaking, wet yeah that reminds me of the old when
they told you if you peed in, the pool that
reds that red would follow.

Speaker 5 (01:00:42):
You around when you're, a kid, you know they said
peed in. The, pool yeah they.

Speaker 1 (01:00:45):
Reminded me had when like, My frustration i'm just gonna
hit it, right here all of a sudden it. Pops
up you peed, the, pool? Dude, gotcha yeah and he's got. To,
go hey it happens to. The best i'll tell. You
what i've seen more club throwing and frustration ON the
pga tour early this year from Guys Like. ALEX toasty
i Mean even scheffler early this year has slammed clubs to.

(01:01:06):
THE ground I mean i ain't mad. AT them i think,
it's HILARIOUS but i like the games of. A ship
you start to see that frustration, creeps in man when
those guys are going so it's it ain't going, anywhere.
Either man it's KIND of i like the competitive edge of,
these guys and every now, and again think, About, it
well take your ass out to the golf course and
these are pros that expect to hit it within like
five feet from, two, forty right we're mad at and

(01:01:29):
when they miss like a five wood from two forty
Five or rory hitting four iron from two forty eight
and they hit it to. Fifteen feet they're pissed, it
THEMSELVES but i continue. To marvel, but, yeah man they
sometimes those frustration bowls over you hit the wrong part.

Speaker 5 (01:01:44):
Of it how many of us have done that on a? Regular,
basis yeah quite a.

Speaker 4 (01:01:47):
Few, times well The vals bar is where they, Played
It Innisbro class week In the, tampa area they threw
out a happy ending to. The story it's the old how?
It Started How's? It going type of poe that, They,
Had well How's? It going on the left was a
Video of hadwin hitting the wedge and then being pretty
frustrated slamming the wedge on the. Sprinkler head sprinkler, goes

(01:02:10):
Off and how's going is how it. All follows in
addition to paying for all the Repairs to innisbrook sprinkler
our at twenty Seventeen, Champ A hadwin golf sent a
video message and bought lunch for the entire course. Maintenance department,
Thank you adam And At jessica hadwin that from The

(01:02:32):
Valas bar championship and the class Move How it's going
was a picture of it looks like a burrito buffet
from a popular burrito spot that some people might frequent
from time. TO time i like the one that's the
more local, here personally but, you know two each is.
Their own, but yeah you got, the guacamole you got,

(01:02:52):
the chicken you got, the beef you got all of.
That there so ponying up a little bit, to, say,
Hey guys. I'm, SORRY yeah i, mean what it'll end.

Speaker 1 (01:03:01):
Up happening he'll probably end up getting an endorsement on
his golf bag for buying the burritos from a certain
burriedo place, and say, you know we like, this guy
how do you reward him? With, breeze SO like, I
Said landy wilson sings a song about four wheel drives
now has a national commercial well singing about four. Wheel
Drives so god. BLESS her i got. To come, BUT
yes i got to come up with something that you
do something, somebody says you, know what we'll get you

(01:03:24):
that that that free sev or we'll get you That.
Free rolex you Know what. I'm saying you gotta. DO
something i guess, Like that but, then again you've got
to be a star to. Get it so that's why they.

Speaker 5 (01:03:33):
Get IT but I like.

Speaker 1 (01:03:34):
Hadwin style don't be surprised that that burrito company somehow
shows up on one of, his lapels on his shirt,
or something which wouldn't be a dumb idea by his agent, to,
push well we bought him.

Speaker 5 (01:03:46):
From here once you just jump in and sponsor him as?
A golfer can we please just have him on?

Speaker 4 (01:03:50):
The commercial, my GOD if i have to see that
girl stirring the guacamole one more time.

Speaker 5 (01:03:54):
And the guy?

Speaker 4 (01:03:55):
Never frozen, oh fresh some your ingredients? Are, fresh yeah,
NEVER frozen i seriously will be sent into. A, rage,
yeah never.

Speaker 1 (01:04:01):
Never frozen we'll make it. Right, here okay you've already
given the, commercial away so the name of the. Company

Speaker 5 (01:07:48):
Dot Com.

Speaker 3 (01:07:51):
The Shawn salisbury. Show continues.

Speaker 4 (01:07:56):
Someone, three, two one two five seven ninety is the
number to get in on the. Phone line let's Continue the.
Astros conversation Holly in beaumont wants to. Wig, in holly what's?

Speaker 9 (01:08:05):
Going on good, Morning guys, nothing Much, Happy monday what
a great WEEKEND for. US sports i just wanted to
comment About the astros. REAL quick i thought the pitching,
was great hot take sincer arrogated he's gonna be On
The all. Star team, the, offense uh though they did
to score but. SIX runs i thought their overall approach.
Was better they're taking a lot more. Pictures pitches what's

(01:08:27):
the exception. Of debon they're taking a lot more pitches
than they did, Last YEAR and i JUST thought i
wanted to See what child's observations were, on that and
if all, else fails maybe they.

Speaker 1 (01:08:35):
Can Get some.

Speaker 9 (01:08:36):
Yankee bats y'all have a.

Speaker 12 (01:08:37):
Great, DAY yeah i.

Speaker 5 (01:08:38):
Appreciate it they're not giving those, away yet?

Speaker 6 (01:08:40):
Are they?

Speaker 1 (01:08:41):
Get boy they were playing in launching pad over, the weekend?
Weren't They, aaron judges he's off to a. Decent start he's. Not,
bad yeah he's not just a hunch not using the. Torpedo,
bats yeah but the ball's torpedo and wherever.

Speaker 5 (01:08:55):
He wants what's? Gonna say? Four, already yeah he had
Three on saturday, one yesterday, four.

Speaker 1 (01:09:00):
ALREADY and i think he's drove driven in eleven runs
and we haven't even taken a. Deep breaths matter, of
fact he's doubled Up the astros production at the plate
in a couple, of games and they're chasing. That down
but he'll, COOL off, i think as will hopefully this team.
GET out I think holly makes a. Great point One
IS ragetty's i think he's got something because there's a

(01:09:20):
toughness about him that you got. To love so that's,
one thing and the stuff seems to be pretty, damn
good and y'all take six innings from him any day of.
The week but the other side of it is is
the about, the plate even though they're not, explosive yet
you think ABOUT the i at the plate laying off
non competitive and even at times. Competitive pitches you just
go Back to bregman, last year what forty plus walks

(01:09:41):
and normally it was over like sixty to, Eighty less
and we know when that guy's, not walking something's. Not
right so whatever, it is taking, more pitches working, more
counts and getting into the pitcher, deeper earlier meaning, pitch
counts and you know before you get through your third
time through where you're wearing him out and making him work.

Speaker 5 (01:10:02):
Early on that's Who the.

Speaker 1 (01:10:03):
Astros ARE and i can't wait to see if this
discipline of the, plate continues they'll, eventually hit but the
way making sure your. WORKING counts i don't know what
the stat is this early in, the season three games
in compared to, last year but optically it looks like
they're being a little smarter even though the production hasn't
been there at the plate and.

Speaker 5 (01:10:21):
Their decisions and.

Speaker 4 (01:10:22):
That was after the Loss, On Friday joe spotta, WAS
asked I Think chandler rome asked him about the lack
of extra pace hits and his response was nine walks
in the first. Two games i'll take that because eventually
that's going to lead to some good things.

Speaker 1 (01:10:34):
For you here's the ONE thing i think is. EASIER this, i,
mean eventually with the Big bats Jordan, and walker they're
going to drive the ball right and Even when decenzo
gets in, a lineup And Obviously cam smith is he
gets used. To pitching we know al tuove they're gonna
drive the BASEBALL and i think. That'll happen but, to
me the early sign and just not just, the walks
but working counts TO that i think is harder to a.

(01:10:58):
Harder early as you're, sitting there what's initial thought think
about the apparatus is? New here walker's, new Here Al
tuo vay and. Leftfield new but you start to look
Around And jake myers has a lot. To prove these
guys START to, i mean you start to go through
everything and, you, say okay with new what's your? First
thought you want to make sure to be a. Little
impatient if You're, CAMP smith i want to SHOW that.

(01:11:19):
I belong i want these guys to KNOW that I
replaced BREGMAN and i got.

Speaker 8 (01:11:22):
A bit.

Speaker 5 (01:11:23):
It's normal.

Speaker 1 (01:11:24):
It's normal it's like you go to a new place
in the quarterback very first time you walk out there.
And practice you want your new teammates to see just what.

Speaker 5 (01:11:30):
You got so what do?

Speaker 1 (01:11:31):
You do you want a little extra wizard of balling
ends at four feet into. The stands, you're, like okay
let me get back to. Be me let me blow that.
One out same. Thing here so the natural reaction is
to be, overly attacking, overly aggressive. Overly everything because. It's
early you want to jump out. Of this you don't want.
To play you want to let people know that this
is who, you are and. It's natural but think about
that with all that aggressiveness and new, you know testosterone

(01:11:55):
in the building that they were still able to draw
nine walks in, three games and the most runs they
scored while this bothers you on the other end is
three and they came up with. Six runs so, early
on you get more walks and runs early on like
this when you're, not producing and you get great innings
from the first and. Third, starter overall, for me obviously

(01:12:16):
it's a win because you won two out, of three
but it's a win for the for the optics of
what it looked like all. Those walks great job adept
by the Pitchers AND. Joe a spotta having the stones
to let them continue when it would have been easy,
to say it's early in, the season we don't need
to add ten more pitches or twelve more pitches to
let fromber get there to not pressure a bullpen To Let.

(01:12:37):
Spencer araghetty and they're both, pitching well so. Why not
but tennantcy early in the season for, a managers what
be a little more guarded because a game, Start, four
yeah let's start one and let those guys work because
they were efficient in. Early innings, but yeah the walks
and the, plate appearances they're gonna eventually drive. THE ball

(01:12:58):
i don't see how they can leave more uns on
base this year and they did. LAST year i just
don't so work. And counts what's that mean you start
to tax. Other bullpens this WAS a i thought a,
productive weekend not just the wins, and losses but productive
and how they got to two.

Speaker 5 (01:13:12):
And one you get the receiver back to. The, sidelines
Man that shawn guy can really. Spin, it man it gets.

Speaker 8 (01:13:18):
On.

Speaker 1 (01:13:18):
You dude let me tell. You something that's everybody wants.
That field now you've been in the league, twenty year
Eybody knows brady's a. Good player but when, you're young
or even as, a veteran when you go to a,
new building even though you've played. TEN years i Got
To san diego in the last year my. Career played
THAT'S where i, was raised and there's no doubt you
want what you. Go through after walking off the first
practice and SHORTS on, t shirt they say that dude's

(01:13:40):
got a got A six russian cosmonauts and a micro
micrometer in. His arm i'm not sure what, that is
but it sounds explosive.

Speaker 2 (01:13:46):
To me you Know what.

Speaker 1 (01:13:47):
I'm saying you want them to walk off and it's.
The same so what do, you do you you grip
it a. Little tighter let's not forget, to hit, you
know throwing it through a, car wash not getting it wets.
One thing you got to hit the. Car wash and
it's the same thing. Her spots your pitches make the throw,
you strikes so you get to hit your pitches as
a hitter as opposed to his pitch as. A pitcher, so,
yeah oh there's. No doubt you walk into the. A
building did you wanted the fellows to walk into the

(01:14:08):
locker room saying you see that big strong, guy man
you see the way he. Throws it, of course but
then you just got to settle in and still. Get,
completions well you didn't want them to call you the.
SCUD missile. I understand that's why they called You the. Patriot,
missile yeah and you don't want to, you know the
scud stud was. ALREADY taken i remember him from. The
scudstud you remember the reporter they called the. Scud stud
you don't, Remember, That, no no the google it during

(01:14:29):
the break during, all that the. Scud missile he was
the guy like one of these newscasts, on them but
they called him the scud stud because he was a
guy out there. Covering it look up the scud stud
you'll See what i'm. TALKING about i think we all
need to be. Called, that, yeah well the patriot probably
is what you want to be known. For, more well,
you know my High School's Dames Orange. Glenn patriots so you're.

(01:14:51):
Onto something there, We go there, we GO, the SS
The Ss Orange glid aircraft. Carrier dog there. You go

Nice lettuce, yeah yeah and he's got like the the
neon jacket on here in this PHOTO that i see.
Of him so he looked the part. For sure so
the Scud Stud, arthur kent we remember him here On
The sean salas scud.

Speaker 1 (01:15:49):
STUD man i think that was around the Same Time
ashley Banfield Became Bernard Shaw.

Speaker 5 (01:15:55):
Bernie. Shaw yeah it was a hell of a run.

Speaker 4 (01:15:57):

Speaker 5 (01:19:15):
Four, monday, okay, aye buddy we'll talk to you.

Speaker 4 (01:19:20):
Again, tomorrow okay have a, good day, all right, see. You,
Buddy yeah astro is able to take two out of
three over. The weekend speaking of, you know our last
caller mentioned The. Torpedo bats That's what john on the
northwest side wants to. Talk, about john what's?

Speaker 5 (01:19:34):
Going, on?

Speaker 14 (01:19:35):
Hey, guys yeah, you know excited About the cougars And.
THE astros i thought that WAS a i thought that
opening series, was huge, you know because The mets a
have a. GOOD team a lot of people are picking
them to maybe Represent The. NATIONAL league, i mean that's
a good team. We beat and the fact that we
won the series, against them, you know two out. OF three,

(01:19:58):
I mean i'll take that, any time and that's what it's.
All about and the team really showed some fortitude on all,
those games and you know they were, close games but,
but hey we'll.

Speaker 2 (01:20:09):
Take it, BUT yeah i wanted.

Speaker 14 (01:20:10):
To call in on also on these, torpedo barrels these.
Torpedo bats you know you, mentioned IT but i Mean,
THE yankees i think this was. It was it was
done by A former yankees front, office member Guy Named
kevin smith or something, like that and, you.

Speaker 6 (01:20:28):
Know there was.

Speaker 5 (01:20:28):
Those bats, you know the bats moved the mass of.

Speaker 14 (01:20:31):
The wood where the hitters commonly make contact THE way.
I understand i don't really understand the technology really. Behind it,
but Man, THE yankees i mean they belt it out
nine home runs that, one Game and judge got four,
of them and they got.

Speaker 2 (01:20:44):
Twenty runs so obviously this is making.

Speaker 14 (01:20:48):
A difference i think the, you Know the yankees seem
to be really committed, to THIS and i don't know
about the. OTHER teams, i mean, you know all these
all the, professional athletes they have their, own way their
own idiosyncrasy.

Speaker 6 (01:21:00):
Of, you know what they what they like and.

Speaker 2 (01:21:02):
Don't LIKE and i don't.

Speaker 14 (01:21:02):
KNOW what i don't know how much of a movement
there will be, towards these but it seems Like the
yankees are really sold on it and they're really making
good use.

Speaker 2 (01:21:11):
Of IT and i was just wondering what you thought.
About IT so i just wanted to chime.

Speaker 14 (01:21:14):
In, on that because that's something that just caught, my
eye and that's, really unusual like you're belting out twenty.

Speaker 2 (01:21:21):
Runs and nine home runs and stuff.

Speaker 14 (01:21:22):
Like that and uh And aj hinch called this out
as well because he was, saying that, you know, you
see he's glad that he's glad for the internet that,
you know it makes it into a big deal and
so he's he raised some.

Speaker 2 (01:21:36):
Concerns about it.

Speaker 14 (01:21:37):
As WELL so i just wonder what your thoughts are,
on it if you've had a chance to look into it.

Speaker 5 (01:21:41):
At, All, thanks john, appreciate money don't don't?

Speaker 1 (01:21:45):
They put isn't there more mass towards, the barrel towards
the trademark on, The, beat yeah towards the label the towards. They've,
transferred wait obviously you got it where, you score because
where you square. It up if you square it, up
there the ball is going to go where you. Want,
to anyway they've moved some mass or some of that
weight down towards the trademark in the middle of the
bat where a lot of. People miss it's like if
you had all that a fifteen, foot putter or you

(01:22:09):
could miss and still put it in and you got to,
you know watch those guys that wear out the club
face and so. SAME thing i got news. For you
you're going to hit that many. Home runs other teams
will be damn well interested if the balls flying out.
Like that this league does everything possible and nobody's gonna
argue with it because it's. Producing runs this league does,
everything possible as does football and as, does basketball to

(01:22:31):
basically try and make defense. Unheard of yet when it
gets down a nutcut in time In A, super bowl
that team who played, Better, defense philadelphia Wins The. Super
bowl the team who ends up getting, great pitching it
won't matter because great pitching will still miss those bats
in clutch times for guys who are a. Strikeout artist
but when you hit it you miss it instead of

(01:22:52):
hitting the ball to shallow left field, Right now well For,
the yankees balls going to, the ballpark which is a,
GOOD thing, I guess but it's every thing. We do
rules are set up to. Score points that's why it doesn't.
Make it it makes the, athletes phenomenal doesn't make it a,
better game doesn't make football a better game than it
was ten, years ago twelve, years ago twenty five. Years
ago it just makes it more exciting for people who

(01:23:13):
only want offense and think that's the way to go.

Speaker 5 (01:23:15):
About it three.

Speaker 1 (01:23:17):
Point shots everything we do in sports is set up
for the offense, to succeed and this is. No, different
yet walk off that mound and put your fingers or
stay on the mound and put your fingers to your
your your fingers to your your lips and your tongue
and then just try to get a grip and you're.

Speaker 5 (01:23:31):
In trouble you better step. Off there.

Speaker 1 (01:23:33):
Do that we can do nothing defensively to stop what
the onslought is and they're nowhere close rules wise in
any of these sports to. Stop it they just, want, offense,
offense offense because people's attention span is not a two
to one game where nobody's got to hit in three
or four innings unless you're a. Baseball lifer but we
cater to stuff that quite frankly shouldn't be. Catered to

(01:23:54):
we need. Real baseball and it's just. ANOTHER thing i
don't know anything about. THE technology i know what they're trying.
To accomplish that miss hits can. Become, hits now of
course that's why they made. This bat they didn't make
it so so you were scored less Runs and america
in The In major. League baseballs okay, WITH it i guess.
Right now chicks did dig the. Long ball but you
know who did not dig the long ball when, He Pitched.

(01:24:16):
Steve sparks he joins us. Right Here Sean, salisbury SHOW.

Dan matthewscuse this Is The Sean salisbury show.

Speaker 4 (01:25:02):
And eight o'clock During the astros season means a weekly
visit with our Good Buddy steve sparks that happens.

Speaker 1 (01:25:08):
Right, now Yeah our astros broadcaster each And every monday
at eight o'clock and grateful to have him on for
visit number two of. The, season STEVE if i would
have told You last monday before we got off that
it was going to turn out exactly like it did,
this weekend even the two and one, record obvious but
the way they got to the two on, one RECORD if,
i said will you be satisfied for one series with

(01:25:31):
what you saw from the big, overall picture how would you?

Speaker 2 (01:25:34):
GRADE it i have A great b plus.

Speaker 15 (01:25:38):
A minus you know you're looking to. Win series you
win two out, of three it gets a Very Good
New york. METS team i think you got to come away.
Pretty excited we talked. ABOUT it i felt LIKE and
i feel like That the astros' strongest point is they're,
starting pitching and that proved.

Speaker 2 (01:25:53):
To, be very very fruitful In that.

Speaker 15 (01:25:57):
METS series, i mean those guys, look good and now
you start the next series with your number four starter
who led the league and opponent's batting average and rights that's, Pretty.

Speaker 1 (01:26:08):
Strong steve what do you Expect from blanco this year coming,
off that, you know, at thirty had his best year
and seemed like he settled in and was confident at
a time, Last, year steve when they, were struggling he
Was a he was a force and kept them every time,
he pitched kept them in. Every game what do you expect?
From him, another level? Same level what do you expect from?

Speaker 2 (01:26:28):
This? YEAR hopefully, i mean if you get the, same
level you'd. BE ecstatic i.

Speaker 5 (01:26:35):
Think agree.

Speaker 15 (01:26:36):
He was he was so good and like, you said
he kept the team afloat for a. BIG portion i
mean they were chasing wins for such a long time
and he was a steady force for the team out.
Of nowhere he was their fifth starter to begin the
season last year and ended up having the SECOND best.

Speaker 2 (01:26:52):
Era In The american League to trek scuball of. All,
People Right so blanco.

Speaker 15 (01:26:57):
Was great he's got four pitch AND when i asked
the analytical people With.

Speaker 2 (01:27:03):
The astros what makes him?

Speaker 15 (01:27:04):
So good because with, my eyes none of those pitches
really look like they're jumping off. The page they said
that his pitches look more similar than any other pitcher in.
The lague everything looks the same coming out of, his
hand and they're going in four. Different directions so THAT'S
what i think that makes him. So good his command's.
Not unbelievable he kind of sprays, the fastball but it's

(01:27:28):
almost effectively wild the way he.

Speaker 2 (01:27:31):
Sprays the ball out of. His hand everything looking, the
same and. He's reliable he's just such a.

Speaker 15 (01:27:36):
Big guy you feel, pretty comfortable especially when you're looking
at number four starter lining up against another team's.

Speaker 2 (01:27:41):
Number four you feel like you have the advantage.

Speaker 1 (01:27:43):
Every time Steven The Great Point, Steve sparks astro's broadcaster
for our weekly visit Here On sports talk seven Ninety
on mondays at. Eight o'clock steve going back to the,
you know With a fromer getting, Seven innings spencer getting,
the six and We Know hunter brown what kind of
workhorse he'll end.

Speaker 5 (01:27:59):
Up being the season.

Speaker 1 (01:28:00):
ROLLS along i thought it also showed some guts and
maybe that's not the, right word But by joe, a
spot it feels to me like early in a season
people are always a little conservative, on, hey well, seven
innings he's got to a certain and they were. Both
efficient but the fact that we got one, to seven one.
To six if you can get a lot, of that
especially early on to save, a bullpen. That'll work wonders

(01:28:21):
moving into the halfway point of the season and beyond
with those guys getting that deep, into games which is
a nice Change In Major.

Speaker 16 (01:28:27):
League, BASEBALL yeah i always, Watch this sean always watch
where the off days lie with a lot of these,
starting pitchers and you'll Know that joe will push them
a little, bit further especially you know the guys at
the top of.

Speaker 15 (01:28:40):
The rotation he'll try to get everything he can out
of a lot of, these pitchers knowing that they got
an extra day, of rest might maybe pushing him an
extra out, or two maybe ten extra pitches because he
knows he gets six days of rest instead of four
or something.

Speaker 2 (01:28:55):
Like that that's a big reason why they went to
a six.

Speaker 15 (01:28:58):
In rotation that they Won The world series, so handily,
you know and they were so fresh going into, the
PLAYOFFS and i think that was the big reason why they.

Speaker 16 (01:29:06):
Won It, steve iry, they'll always, they'll always they'll always
go in that direction when they've got.

Speaker 1 (01:29:12):
More rest, love it and both those, guys Validated and
i'm sure we're going to get More From hunter brown
and we'll Get Some renelle blanco as, Well, tonight steve
with this team at, the plate you coming out of,
this weekend they drew a lot.

Speaker 5 (01:29:24):
Of walks was?

Speaker 1 (01:29:26):
There overall what was your favorite thing about the offensive point?

Speaker 5 (01:29:30):
Of view even though they only scored?

Speaker 15 (01:29:31):
Six Runs, it's pnia. You know and now two they
got his Knocks The Paynia christal. Walker too he didn't
get much to show, for it but he hit five
balls or, SIX balls, i believe well over one hundred miles.

Speaker 2 (01:29:44):
Per hour so that's going to change as far as the.

Speaker 15 (01:29:45):
Results Go but painia continues to make, good DECISIONS and
i think that's for ME and i kind of wear
this out on a. Daily basis we Talk About cam
smith's Swing decisions. Paynia, too man it looks noticeably different
that he's laying off a lot of those sliders off
the plate and buying himself an opportunity to hammer the
bad ones and also take advantage of the fastballs that

(01:30:08):
he loves to.

Speaker 1 (01:30:10):
Swing, at steve what's the ceiling for him if there,
Is one if he's playing like he is now and becomes,
more selective what kind of ceiling do? You see what
kind of player he is here in and. Year out like,
the numbers what do they?

Speaker 2 (01:30:22):
LOOK like i think the ceiling is all, star caliber.
YOU know i think he can hit twenty five to,
thirty homers maybe a few more. Than that.

Speaker 15 (01:30:33):
It still like he did not walk one single time during,
spring TRAINING and i think. THAT'S coming i think the
next evolution for him is to carry it through through an,
entire bat where he starts to get on base more
and we're starting to look at an ops instead of
around seven, to ten of around seven sixty seven seventy
by getting on base more and driving the ball even

(01:30:55):
better because of. His DECISIONS so i think there's more
of the take you look at.

Speaker 2 (01:30:59):
It guy at his age who've had three years that
are almost identical offensively.

Speaker 15 (01:31:04):
M hm i WOULDN'T say i wouldn't say this about,
many people but just because the way he's seeing, THE
ball i think it's possible.

Speaker 1 (01:31:11):
For another elevation to, his game which would. Be Nice
steve sparks joins us for a couple, more minutes as
he Does every monday at eight o'clock here On A sean.
Salisbury show steve To That cam, smith mentioned what'd you
think about you know his early season at bats here
in his, first series how he handled it at the
plate in what you saw, from him that gives you
great hope pushing him in the starting lineup all.

Speaker 5 (01:31:32):
Year, long yeah there's.

Speaker 15 (01:31:34):
Going to be a lot of First For Cam and
i'm sure that was the first time that he's felt
and maybe even heard his heart beating out of his
chest and.

Speaker 2 (01:31:43):
Going through all the emotions that he's.

Speaker 15 (01:31:44):
Gone through and he's going to go to these new
ballparks for the first time and feel it as a,
visiting player and he's going To Have fenway park later
that he's going to have a lot of first that
you just had. To EXPERIENCE and i think he handled himself.
Very well it didn't really looked like he was getting
outside of himself or chasing or doing trying to do.
Too MUCH and i think that's all you would hope

(01:32:06):
for for a young player at.

Speaker 6 (01:32:08):
This stage what is.

Speaker 1 (01:32:09):
Your if your, comfort level, you, know one being the,
least comfortable five being most comfortable? Right now if you
THINK if i just parlay it out like over the
next twenty five games with a bullpen middle and all
the way to the, back end your comfort level with them.

Speaker 6 (01:32:23):
RIGHT now.

Speaker 15 (01:32:26):
I think you've got to be pretty pretty excited about
where you're gonna Bridge To.

Speaker 2 (01:32:32):
BRIAN abray I THINK.

Speaker 15 (01:32:32):
Brian a brady is the most indispensable player on their
entire team because of what he does to Get. To
HATER but i don't know if anybody else can Do
a bray's job in the.

Speaker 2 (01:32:42):
Eighth inning.

Speaker 15 (01:32:45):
I'm Excited About brian King And steven okert and a
lot of those guys who can go in and get
big outs to get Him, to abray You, And HATER
and i think that's where my biggest concern was maybe
coming out of, spring training what's that going to? Look
LIKE and i know it's only been, three games but
we saw it last. Year Too brian king is. A
Force steven okert, was unbelievable and he's going to be

(01:33:08):
unflappable just because of his. Veteran status so they've got
enough guys that are going to fill up the, strike
zone and.

Speaker 2 (01:33:15):
THAT'S what i always worry. About us are guys going
to come in and.

Speaker 15 (01:33:18):
Challenge guys, you know you come into a game and
it's only a one, run spread you've got to pitch
to the corners. Right away that's why you see a
lot of these relievers fall behind in. The count they
don't have the luxury of a starting pitcher who can
start in the middle of the play and then work
themselves to the outside corners once they.

Speaker 2 (01:33:37):
Get ahead the relievers have to do it just, The
opposite so it makes things.

Speaker 15 (01:33:41):
Very difficult that's why you see the walk rate go
up a little bit with these guys or falling behind
in the count because they've got to be so precise
in one. Run Game so i'm Excited That brian King
And steven okret right away have shown the ability to
go at hitters and get swing and missing the.

Speaker 1 (01:33:58):
Strike zone steve with al two vay and, LEFT field,
i mean are we is it going to get to
the point where we're just we feel pretty comfortable with
him because he's a veteran and, you know early on
making some plays And Calling jake. Myers off will we
ever settle in to the point where we're not going
into a game thinking how's he going to? Handle it
are we going to get to that point defensively because

(01:34:19):
obviously offensively it's not affecting in.

Speaker 5 (01:34:20):
One, bit.

Speaker 15 (01:34:22):
Yeah there's gonna, be hiccups, you know and there's gonna
be weird DECISIONS in I think i said it. Last
week it's going to be tough to go into new
ballparks and realize where the wall is and how not
to get too close to it on the balls that
you can't. Get to, that way you can play it
off the wall and keep guys from going ninety. Feet
Further but i'm.

Speaker 2 (01:34:44):
ALREADY there i, feel like, you know left fielders see
less action than anybody else on.

Speaker 15 (01:34:51):
THE diamond i think it's two point seven balls, PER
game i think on average. Last year so he's Just
got he's just got to make the normal regular plays
and have to be unbelievable and throw guys out at
bases where they're twenty percent chance to get them. At
best just make the plays and. Handle It hunter Brown

(01:35:13):
fromber valdez or both ground. Ball pitchers there's only a
couple of guys that you really think that are going
to get a lot of flyball.

Speaker 2 (01:35:20):
Action or play real big. Left fields one of Them.

Speaker 15 (01:35:23):
Is seattle it's going to be interesting to See how
joe's spot up plays it When the astros PLAY At
T mobile Park against seattle on this first. Road trip
but he's taking ground balls AT second i think we're
going to see him at second base.

Speaker 5 (01:35:36):
As well steve will wrap up With This san francisco comes.
To town just an.

Speaker 1 (01:35:41):
Overall thought they're in a very difficult, Division obviously what
do we expect from them?

Speaker 5 (01:35:46):
This year and will they be hanging Around in september
with a chance of? THE playoffs.

Speaker 15 (01:35:52):
I, think so, you know in everybody's gathering information, right
now AND if i gathered information by the last game
they ask, was played is Griff and canning had a
really good slider And the astros are very, Right handed
so we might see a lot of relievers coming into
this series that have good sliders Facing. The astros that's
the Information that i'm gathering. Right now as this, season

(01:36:14):
progresses what can they do to combat somebody that throws
are really, good slider.

Speaker 1 (01:36:19):
Laying off, bad pitches non. Competitive strikes it should. Be
fun a lot of walks over, the weekend which tells
us something at least, early on that there's a little
more discipline going on.

Speaker 5 (01:36:28):
Right, now steve, great stuff.

Speaker 1 (01:36:30):
My man enjoy the home, series again and we'll look
forward to hearing from you and talking to you Again.

Speaker 5 (01:36:34):
Next monday, as always we appreciate.

Speaker 2 (01:36:36):
You brother thank you, All, right sean thanks for having.

Speaker 5 (01:36:39):
Us good stuff two.

Speaker 1 (01:36:40):
And One and steve when he takes away and, he's
right Everything that payina did in the spring other than
walk is carrying over right now with his discipline at
the plate in he's got. A Chance when steve mentioned
twenty five to thirty maybe more, HOME runs i think
his natural power Says.

Speaker 3 (01:36:55):
That The susury Show With sean Salisbury And brian Lima
On sports talk Seven, ninety sean were you.

Speaker 4 (01:37:10):
Aware that people were having TROUBLE with MLB dot tv
on opening day of like the one day that you
probably would want to make sure where, you know you
have that? Staff meeting, you, know hey, you know is
this is this going off without?

Speaker 5 (01:37:23):
A hitch?

Speaker 4 (01:37:24):
You know everything set up with, the commissioner all of.
Those things wouldn't you think that somebody would be there
from digital, of hey how are?

Speaker 5 (01:37:30):
We looking?

Speaker 4 (01:37:31):
You know or are we going to Have A Jake
Paul mike tyson kind of? Moment here is that going
to be? An issue is, that yeah we know we should?
Be good well they couldn't get on because it was
like down. Or, something yes so opening day should probably
be PREPARED for i was, gonna say, you know because
you have fans that, are Elsewhere And Major league baseball
did release. A, STATEMENT unfortunately mlb dot tv experienced a

(01:37:52):
technical issue yesterday that resulted in a temporary inability to
access our live.

Speaker 5 (01:37:57):
Game streams this was now in an email while our.

Speaker 4 (01:38:01):
Technical team addressed the issue immediately and restore access as soon.
As possible we understand how disappointing this was to our
fans who were eagerly anticipating the start.

Speaker 5 (01:38:09):
This season, for that.

Speaker 4 (01:38:10):
WE apologize mlb fans deserve the best streaming, experience possible
and we will continue to strive to. Provide that do
thank you for your support of the. NATIONAL pastime mlb
would like to offer you ten dollars off any purchase
of twenty five dollars or more at mlbshop. Dot com
so it's not good enough that YOU spend i think
it's one hundred and fifty for the. Entire season it's

(01:38:33):
been a while Since since i've, done.

Speaker 1 (01:38:34):
IT because i GET THE ma mlb pass, every, year
OKAY and i can't remember what, it is but you
just this redoes it.

Speaker 5 (01:38:40):
Every, year yeah you spend a pretty penny.

Speaker 8 (01:38:42):
On, it though is.

Speaker 5 (01:38:43):
The point so.

Speaker 1 (01:38:44):
Most overrated monthly bill you'll get is ther cable slash.
Internet bill it's if you get extra channels. And stuff
it's that you want to talk about a. Racket stealing
they're good.

Speaker 8 (01:38:56):
At it.

Speaker 5 (01:38:57):
Legalized, theft mind please sit there.

Speaker 1 (01:38:59):
And, wonder oh there's no question when you're spending the
price of a car on internet and watching a COUPLE
of tv, channels extra, It's expensive there's no question. About
it it's kind of like what we just went through
last Year With hurricane barrel with a certain energy provider
out there, of hey we're not gonna have to like
pay the, full month?

Speaker 5 (01:39:19):
Are we and it was well. About that, you know
we got things to fix and all, of that, and
yeah we're not paying.

Speaker 6 (01:39:25):
For that.

Speaker 1 (01:39:25):
You are oh and well here's. Another thing go go
join a golf course and then they go through two months.
Of maintenance they don't stop you from you don't stop,
paying dues you can't play the. Golf course we're receiving
and doing, a bunch and we're fixing the, cart pass
even though the cart pass still looks the same when
it's done. Being fixed i'm not sure what you did
other than the you mean the one where you hit
it and you land it on the other side because

(01:39:46):
you got. Full air if you're going two miles, an
hour that one it's like going up a bridge and
coming back down the. Other side but ye, oh no, a,
man listen it's. Under construction we've got three months. Of,
it yeah how's our dues all do?

Speaker 5 (01:39:57):
The same you?

Speaker 1 (01:39:59):
Can't play, oh yeah well that's that's part. Of it
i've always. Wondered that so wait, a minute we don't
get to pro rate this thing for nine months if
you're paying a certain amount of. A month, oh yeah same.
Thing there they don't, the apologies but if, you do
you know how slick. They were ten dollars off if
you spend twenty five more dollars, right now ten dollars
off as, a bonus be off your bill next because
we screwed. The, pooch yeah that's the way, things. Work

(01:40:21):
brother once you, start paying they lock you in and there.

Speaker 5 (01:40:25):
Is no respite.

Speaker 4 (01:40:26):
FROM it i was going, TO say i don't think
there's anything that is like right there around twenty five
dollars that would be, worth buying like usually everything that
that's where they get you.

Speaker 1 (01:40:35):
On that we spend over twenty. Five dollars it's like
everything costs seventy five. Or, more right that's that's. The,
rake yes that's the. Rake rate you get twenty, five
off but you spend, seventy five we'll give you ten.
Dollars off and We're still. WE'RE still i mean. It
is it's, a, RACKET man i mean we all need
to have. That racket there ain't no doubt.

Speaker 4 (01:40:50):
ABOUT it i was, gonna say find a way to.
Make profits it's a good skill to have no doubt.
About it seven, two five seven ninety the number to
GET in awl on The south side wants to wait, In,
here al what's?

Speaker 5 (01:41:00):
Going, on hey what's?

Speaker 12 (01:41:02):
Going?

Speaker 8 (01:41:02):
ON guys a?

Speaker 17 (01:41:03):
Great, show uh let me make a quick point or two. Here,
sean uh kudos To. THE astros i like the way.
They played I'm with steve on. That GOOD like i, always,
say shunning you know, This hit we're gonna give you.
Quality baseballs shout out To. The strolls i'm gonna take,
a minute real quick shun and take a shout out,
long live, Never Forgotten, miss CARROLL because i think this

(01:41:25):
first Time that stros opened opening day will winning a
series in.

Speaker 5 (01:41:30):
A while I think i seen.

Speaker 17 (01:41:31):
That somewhere so we go give this one To. Miss carroll,
Uh shun uh shout out To The, houston Cougars because
i'm looking at that shun and the boy you talking
about the team with grind and grit and even on
the other side of the ball with good offense play were.

Speaker 13 (01:41:47):
Looking.

Speaker 17 (01:41:47):
Good Shun and i'm gonna say this hip BECAUSE uh
i missed The call Friday or dan you was talking
About the orders And, the colors and uh they really.
Never won now let me tell you something, right now
when all was sure we was passing this city with our,
football team we had one of the best all time
running backs in. The, game yeah we kicked the door
and didn't knock. It down but the, team itself the

(01:42:10):
love this city had for Love, you blue it's. It's
borrowing no second place third. To us we we would
love to Watch the Allers on Sundays and monday. Night
football i'm gonna tell you, right now this city was
erupted when we played in, those days, late seventies. Early
Eighties the houston. All, us man it is just it's
just a coltural thing with Us. In houston we take

(01:42:30):
That color. Pride as sure you Know what, I'm, saying
sun we take that love, you blue that that that
jersey was the number one Jersey. Across america i'm gonna
tell you, right now we're thirty four. BACK there, i,
mean man, look here and you know that's just how.
We will he WAS what i were. Football town so
whether all, of us they gave us a GOOD Watch
tv MAN and i loved that, COLOR back i don't

(01:42:51):
care what. Nobody say that's what you call. Historical HISTORY
and i hang up the mission.

Speaker 4 (01:42:56):
SHOW all i appreciate the Call. AL no, i, MEAN
look I don't i don't doubt how people felt about.
THE oilers, i just, you know for, MY lifetime i
remember how it was at. The end it was basically
after Was It, kansas city when they lost, that series
that that, playoff game and then, pretty much, You know
bud signaled to the fan base, That's it we're gonna
blow this. THING up, I mean i don't really have any,

(01:43:18):
interest in, you know building this thing into a, winner
anymore because well it seems like the city in the
county is not really interested in keeping. Us around so
let's hop on, a plane let's go Out to nashville
and start talking, with Them and oiler fans at that
point were just kind, of, like dude just.

Speaker 1 (01:43:32):
Go, LEAVE well i think that if You're a, texans
fan you feel pretty good about the direction of this.
Team now and they've won a bunch of Divisions since,
tennessee LEFT and i would argue that they've probably won
as many divisions over the last decade or more Divisions than. Tennessee's,
ONE right i mean Even when bill, o'brown what they
won three or four. Of, them yeah they've already run

(01:43:54):
two in a Row With, demiko ryan so. They're plan,
you know there's a lull in there With with Lovey
And david cully as far as one years, and done
but there there was a plan put in place and it's.
In place, SO yeah i understand the pride of the
jersey and the rest, of it but at some point
in time you're just gonna have to deal.

Speaker 5 (01:44:10):
With, it well but.

Speaker 4 (01:44:11):
There's two things they've done That the oilers. Haven't, done
one get To A, super bowl to make it TO
The Afc, championship game and that's something That the texans
are trying.

Speaker 1 (01:44:19):
To, do, yeah well, they said okay That the texas
have done With the oilers. Haven't, DONE yeah i mean.
Neither team neither team has been To A super bowl's what, You're,
saying Well that Tennessee HAS oh i thought You.

Speaker 5 (01:44:32):
SAID texans i thought you Met.

Speaker 1 (01:44:35):
The, Texans yeah tennessee got Beaten Their super Bowl with
steve McNair's the quarterback Against. THE rams i thought you
meant That the tennessee, has done hasn't done Something that.
Texans have, but yes, you're Right the texans are still
looking to get to A. Super bowl, but uh And
the texans are obviously looking to get TO An afc.
Championship game hamster came off the Wheel, most, no, no,
NO no I just i.

Speaker 2 (01:44:53):
Was you you.

Speaker 1 (01:44:54):
Were right, i'm thinking wait, a Minute didn't? Tennessee? Go
yeah but the truth of the matter is this team
right now is in a lot better Positioning Than tennessee.
Titans ARE and i understand the pride for the color
and the love, you blue but you're gonna have to
work a lot to get, that back just because you
know that's That's a it almost feels like moving the
franchise take a back seat to.

Speaker 5 (01:45:13):
That jersey you know. It does if you're, new HERE
but i get.

Speaker 1 (01:45:17):
The pride now go take care of your business because
you've got a much better chance then they just keep
beating their brains in in.

Speaker 5 (01:45:21):
The division that's.

Speaker 4 (01:45:21):
Good too it's never a, bad thing that is. For
sure you split with them. Last year hopefully you take
both of them. Next, year rogers see you. Right there get.

Speaker 13 (01:45:29):
To you on the.

Speaker 4 (01:45:29):
OTHER side i want to get back Into. The coogs
making it to the final four a huge step for.
The program we'll talk about that. Right Here Sean, Salisbury Show.

Speaker 3 (01:45:40):
The Shawn salisbury. SHOW continued.

Speaker 4 (01:45:45):
I know a lot of you want to Talk, at
Koug's including roger on the. Northwest side he wants to
talk uh In the. Final, four roger what's?

Speaker 18 (01:45:53):
Going on, Good, morning mike he's the.

Speaker 2 (01:45:56):

Know What kelvin sanson.

Speaker 18 (01:46:24):

took it down to the spuds and rebuilt it, EVEN better.

Speaker 19 (01:46:29):
I think but, YOU know i hope they race the
members Of The houston cougar's past with the fire Slime
on jama because.

Speaker 18 (01:46:36):
That needs to be that needs to. Be fixed, you
know we we deserve An ann. Cuba championship and in
regards To.

Speaker 6 (01:46:44):
The, rockets man, uh yeah that was just.

Speaker 18 (01:46:47):

The houston houston hoops on the, map man and just just,

me i'll take that all. Day long and that's. Just
it and for, that stud, good guy, hey man he's

(01:47:11):
got something cool to say to The young jain.

Speaker 18 (01:47:13):
The youngsters now you, can, say like, YOU.

Speaker 2 (01:47:16):
Know i was a.

Speaker 18 (01:47:16):
Bad dad when you're in your dad's badge, All right
i'll leave it that.

Speaker 4 (01:47:22):
ALL right i appreciate The call rogers sounding you're breaking
up there at. The, END no, i, mean look he touched,
on IT and i think you know me and you
had this conversation, Last. Week sean you remember the bad
times whenever your team is really going through. The GOOD like,
I said i mean that ground ball off The Bat,
corey seeger J Jose, l twove it finds the Mitt

(01:47:43):
Of juli guriel and you finally get to celebrate Winning The.
World series and one of the things that comes to
your mind, immediately is, oh man this is for. Ninety
eight this is for that team that you thought was gonna,
get there they were gonna, win it and they didn't.

Speaker 5 (01:47:57):
Do it this is for the.

Speaker 4 (01:47:57):
Awful times these are for the years when you Know
Then Minute made park was empty because they.

Speaker 5 (01:48:04):
Weren't going they weren't worth going. To watch and now
it is all built up. To this YOU win u
of h.

Speaker 4 (01:48:09):
SAME deal i can't tell you how Many buildings i've
been in with my mom and Dad at Hall of,
fin's pavilion dark dingy spot where it just looks like
this looks like where college basketball comes, to die and
then You Get kelvin sampson on campus.

Speaker 5 (01:48:22):
Twenty sixteen he's.

Speaker 4 (01:48:24):
Going around with a bullhorn trying to, Get, kids hey
come WATCH The uh cougar's play and, they're, like yeah, all, right,
Whatever dude, well sure maybe we'll show up every once in. A, While,
now kelvin if he gets out of his car over
on campus and somebody, sees him you get a throng
of people who are running over to him because they
want to take selfies with, the guy because he's just
that much of a figure now on campus because of

(01:48:45):
what he's done with.

Speaker 5 (01:48:45):
That, program yeah it's, been.

Speaker 1 (01:48:47):
Special man it's a destination spot instead of a spot
you go. To die this team competitive. Every year they're
on a run where every year we expect them to
be In the, Final four elite eight with a chance to,
win it and they've got a legitimate chance. This YEAR
so i don't ever judge by, you know we look
and make comparisons to, the teams but injuries to star
players and some at times in ability to knock down shots,

(01:49:09):
their perimeter with three guys shooting beyond forty percent from
the on, the arc three point that. They're different and
their defense. Hasn't changed there's a. Culture there then when you,
come here you.

Speaker 5 (01:49:19):
Play that we.

Speaker 1 (01:49:20):
Know that and as long as they're big stat of,
foul trouble this. Team's dangerous and it's not just one
guy in. Knockdown shots they got long range ability to
beat you with the three and then hold you to
fifty to fifty two to. Fifty six teams are not
used To these final. Four teams they're not used to playing.
Down there they're used to playing a, little more, you
know in that seventy seventy. FIVE range i got news.

(01:49:41):
For you you better be able to win a game
in the fifties, or sixties low sixties if you're Playing
the cougars and now they can knock down shots and
get in a running game with you if they. Need
to they love the half, court GAME and i understand
that to slow that, part down to make you work on.
Both ends but they are capable of getting up and down.
The floor but if they, allow you if you allow
them to play, their game defend you every shot and

(01:50:02):
play in a, half court you're gonna have a tough time.
Beating them as long as they stat of. Foul trouble this.
Is different. THIS year i think From what, i've seen
especially with their ability to beat you, long distance and.

Speaker 4 (01:50:12):
Especially watching the Game on Friday with andrew Catalan And
steve lapis on, the call and, You know lapis talked
about it a couple of different times working on end
of game situations there In that, thursday practice and one
of the ones that they worked on was the inbound
play from use in gets it in and the defender
doesn't mark him as he's coming, back in and, they, said,

(01:50:33):
okay hey there.

Speaker 5 (01:50:33):
You go you're right there at. The basket put it
in and we'll take the lead and probably win.

Speaker 1 (01:50:38):
This game and when You, play HOUSTON and i believe
that this point was made and Brought in Lapis and
catalans broadcast, as well but it's it's, a fact and
they validated what we all should know is that when you,
play them you have you can't just attack the basket
on the. Defensive glass you've got to put a body,
on them because they do have the ability on the

(01:50:59):
offense of end for if they're shooting threes, long rebounds
but they get to the glass and they are they
get second. Chance points so it's not you got to
find them and put a body on them no matter where.
They are it can't just be under the basket because
they'll get some. Long rebounds but they're knocking. Down shots
this is, a dangerous. Dangerous team when. They're shooting you
saw what they're. Capable of and when You hold florida

(01:51:19):
to sixteen points in the, first half a you are
different And not Florida. But tennessee, and well if They
hold florida to sixteen points in the national, championship game
they get there in, first half then you'll be crowning
this team. National champion So, but tennessee who, we know
how athletic, they are and they defend.

Speaker 6 (01:51:35):
As well.

Speaker 1 (01:51:35):
IT'S amazing i guarantee you they practice Hard defensively, tennessee
does and We Know rick barnes teams. Do that and
then they ran into this same damn even on our,
practice court we don't get. THIS intense, I mean i'm sure,
they do but it looks different when it's by. Somebody
else this team's. Gonna win knockdown, free throw stay out of,
foul trouble and hit. Enough shots because One thing i'd

(01:51:55):
never worry about is their effort on the. Defensive end
they will give it and coach doesn't have to teach
it because he knows where you're going to be sitting if.
YOU don't i love, this TEAM and i like this
team MORE than i have teams in the past because
they can. Beat you if they can beat you if
they have to go long range, on you which is
a plus, for them especially beyond a three.

Speaker 4 (01:52:13):
Point line and In that tennessee, game yesterday it seemed
like if there was any remote possibility that the dribbler might,
become stagnant double team immediately like you had somebody immediately over,
to them whether it's try to set up, a trap
try to set up, a travel any of those different things.
THAT it i mean again to your Point where tennessee
it started to seep into their minds mentally of the

(01:52:36):
only shots we're gonna get her from, the outside we're not.

Speaker 1 (01:52:38):
Making Those and i'll tell, you though and, those shots
but rarely are they getting a clean free look on
a regular basis because this team that transit when you,
you know have to go over the top or underneath,
the screen. They're ability it's Like when i'm talking about
a corner when the ball is in the air and
he baits you. Into thinking dion used to try to
do this all the time and was good. At it
he'd bait you and to think you've gotten beat and

(01:52:59):
then you put the ball on the air and, his
cover his catch up speed and when the ball is
in the air. Was ridiculous it's the same thing here
in a different way because it's shorter and the balls
not in the air. As long but their ability to
go over the top or underneath screens or switch which,
you know but they it's incredible how quickly you think
you've got an open look and they attack that, perimeter

(01:53:19):
shot their, perimeter defense extended. Perimeter defense and then if
you go, by them their recovery and ability to get
back and either help and get help from a friend
and then do the things they do to make sure
they're there to get the. Defensive glass their recovery time
to an open look shooter. Is ridiculous it. Really is
you think you, got it next thing you know it's a.

(01:53:39):
Contested shot and we know what they're like on the.
Defensive backboards, they're. Nasty nasty you better show up ready for,
a fistfight and you better be in condition because they're
willing to go twelve rounds with you an old school fifteen.
Round fight some teams got to get out and go
are they are other teams in it for the bludgeting
you'll take if.

Speaker 5 (01:53:58):
You don't and That's who. Houston is not just some.

Speaker 1 (01:54:00):
Physical team they also have incredible ability to beat you
with some finesse basketball as.

Speaker 4 (01:54:06):
Well offensive END two I Mean. Robertson tugler it seems
like every single, time, up hey there. They are they
just came down with another, offensive rebound kick it out
or sharp, up yep there.

Speaker 1 (01:54:15):
You go that's, pointer perimeter play, guard play and the
ability to knock down shots when you got, open looks
and they did, under pressure even when somebody tried to close,
that Gap and tennessee tried and you just couldn't close
it because they kept responding with shots of.

Speaker 4 (01:54:27):
Their, own well hopefully they don't have excuses when this
is all said, and done because somebody out. There did
and if somebody around here, said THIS well i think
we would be up. In arms that's next, Right Here Sean.
Salisbury show.

Speaker 1 (01:54:42):
Let's.

Speaker 3 (01:54:42):
Go on this Is The Sean.

Speaker 4 (01:54:44):
Salisbury SHOW if i ever told you that being tired
was an excuse for, POOR performance i have to believe
that probably you'd look at me, and, say well, you're here.
Aren't you you're supposed to, Be here you're supposed to
be ready. To go and, you know like like if
me and you have a bad SHOW and, i, said,
oh man you, KNOW what i got to, BE honest

(01:55:04):
i was. REALLY tired i got to believe that you're probably, gonna,
say well the hell.

Speaker 8 (01:55:08):
With.

Speaker 1 (01:55:08):
THAT man i, WAS here i was ready. To go
why why weren't you up The long my first thought,
WOULD be i get it happens. To everybody just don't
do it two days in. A, Row okay THAT'S what i.
Would say and then if it happened two or three
or four days in, A row, i'd say what's what's. The, problem,
so YEAH but i would make sure we dealt with
that in. The HOUSE but i don't anticipate that ever being.
A problem, but, yeah no everybody has those shows where

(01:55:29):
they may not feel the way they do it or
games the rest. Of it, but yeah the, excuse, is,
yeah excuse but get back the, next day. No, DOUBT well,
i mean, you know and energy for.

Speaker 5 (01:55:38):
Your job.

Speaker 1 (01:55:38):
Everybody's tired THAT'S why i look. At it our job
is to even if you are fool them and pretend
like you're, NOT well, i MEAN because, i mean, you
Know coach gruden's not the only one that has. The grudens,
grinders's right, YOU know i got to be. A, grinder hey, come,
on man you gotta be ready to go for.

Speaker 5 (01:55:51):
That show, come, on hey you know. Coach, guys yeah, Excuse,
man yeah. That's, it yes it says, you know you
just you never Know where coach's gonna pop.

Speaker 3 (01:56:00):
Up here.

Speaker 4 (01:56:01):
But Anyway, brock purdy the Forty nine, ers quarterback on
the Forty nine Ers web, zone podcast asked about what
went wrong.

Speaker 5 (01:56:08):
Last season, he said guys. Were, tired uh season is.

Speaker 4 (01:56:13):
No joke when you Go from july of training and
everything all the way through the End, of february you
really only get five weeks off. Or so so then
you've got to report back and guys again, are tired they're.

Speaker 5 (01:56:26):
Beat. Up, still well my.

Speaker 1 (01:56:28):
Message is for the last pick on the draft who's
about to make about sixty million bucks WHEN he's, i
mean he's gonna end up making More. Than tua he's
gonna be in that fifty five, million range whether you
think he deserves it. Or not he's gonna make more
because he deserves more than two because, His Production So
trevor lawrence who deserves more Money brock Perty Or. Trevor
Lawrence rock purty does, considering production so he's gonna. Make
money this is, not it though nobody wants to hear.

(01:56:52):
About it nobody wants to hear. Your, tige yeah, you're
tired and they are. Extra tired a lot, of. Injuries backups,
that's called, you know the front office making sure that
the back come in and lot's. Not missing the forty
nine ers saw what a lot of. Teams Saw But Kansas,
City chiefs i'm sure. They're tired they. Playing postseason they've
played Three Straight, super Bowls so i'm sure they. Were
tired now they, Got BEAT but i doubt that's going
to be. The excuse, of course you're tired and, burned

(01:57:12):
out and after a long period of time of constantly
playing extra. You're tired I'm sure lebron's tired when he
goes to the playoffs. This year he's always playing a
lot of. Extra games i'm sure. It happens but A
brock purty's going to learn at a young age that
you give me a lot. Of stuff we were, banged
up we, were hurt we were. Beat down it's a.
Long grind guys were, worn out but we don't have

(01:57:32):
an excuse to be tired because everybody else got to
go to work and every other team's dealing. With it
they played a little longer because they're a, postseason Team
but baltimore plays in the postseason. Every year buffalo teams
playing the postseason, every Year the chiefs playing the postseason.
Every year SO while i Love brock purty this that,
you're tired people probably don't want to. Hear it and
their excuse was they just weren't very efficient at times

(01:57:53):
with injuries and they couldn't. Overcome them they became a
very average team. AT best i Know the rams were.
Tired too philadelphia is probably pretty, worn out but that's
probably not his not that it's that big, a deal
because he's worked his ass off to get where. He
is but you probably it's like when somebody says we,
PLAYED hard i really don't.

Speaker 5 (01:58:13):
Care how hard. You played you're. Supposed to that's why you.
Get paid you're supposed to.

Speaker 1 (01:58:17):
Play it sometimes you may not have your best or
your best legs underneath you but even if, you don't
probably best not to tell your fan base that you.
Played hard, to me that's a. Loser's lament you got your,
ass kick you, played hard well so to the. Other
team or when we are, down thirty we need to,
play harder or we. Played hard that is the easy
go to for a coach or player after you've getten your.

(01:58:37):
Butt KICKED but i do believe the job title says
play hard all, the time which may be tough. To
do the excuse that, you're tired very few people want to,
hear it even though you may. Be exhausted it's probably
not the way you want to go when you're trying
to let everybody, know what fifty five million or sixty million,
a year you got a job.

Speaker 5 (01:58:54):
To do tired's, one thing telling us about it.

Speaker 4 (01:58:56):
To another here's another addition to the life rules that
we have on this side. The refrigerator just because it
might be true doesn't mean you have to. Say it
because brock party falls. Into This anthony richardson, Last, year
hey why'd you tap the top of?

Speaker 8 (01:59:08):
Your?

Speaker 4 (01:59:08):
HELMET oh i got to, be, HONEST man i. Was tired,
well then, funny enough he wasn't the starting quarterback of the.

Speaker 1 (01:59:13):
FOLLOWING week i would have probably said my hammy was
if you're, really tired don't tell us that because you
made it and he's all over. The place but that
linebacker on guard that don't get pulled OUT because i
mean that. Tapping out and so when it gets to,
the summertime or you know when they Say in september,
for football still hot in places and they're wearing their
ass out for, seventy plays it's rare that you're going

(01:59:35):
to see your starting left tackle or center tap out
because he's tired after having to go. Block downfield he may,
be Exhausted and i'm sure, he is but that's when
you're that's when we fully expect you to lie. To
Us That anthony richardson should have fully on lied to
us and said full onlede, and, said man you, KNOW
what i was a little, smit head got a little

(01:59:56):
little dehydrated, or something or my hamstring got a little cramped.
CRAMPED up i just for, ONE play i just need
to get out or two plays, and SEE because i
didn't want to put my team at. A, Disadvantage MAN
and i hate THAT because i work hard to be
conditioned even if you weren't to tell, us that because
tapping out is it only takes one tap out for
you to. Lose respect and whether they do, Or not

(02:00:17):
i'm she's a young kid who made a mistake and
just really told. The truth he was tired as, well
start so you can't blame. For that but the truth
is most people don't want to hear in a drive
the quarterbacks tired after a twelve.

Speaker 5 (02:00:29):
Yard run that's one of those where you got to.

Speaker 4 (02:00:32):
Jump up maybe, you know hop over to, the, sideline
hobble get, a, trainer hey stretch.

Speaker 5 (02:00:36):
Me out stretch. Me out do what they do in.

Speaker 1 (02:00:37):
College football just fake an injury late in, the game
fake an injury fifteen times in the fourth quarter to
save time because they don't seem to enforce.

Speaker 5 (02:00:45):
It enough and just. Do that it's an easy thing.
TO do, i mean we see.

Speaker 1 (02:00:49):
College college well WE see nba players flop all, the
time but you might as well do it on the
as a. Football player see if you can stop. It
down we see it happening all. THE time i got
it smirking while they're. Doing it it would have been
Good For anthony richard in. That case now he gets
to go and win his team back, over somehow. Some,
way well and that's.

Speaker 4 (02:01:03):
THE thing i almost wonder if after, that happened if
you had some of the veteran leaders On that colts
team go Up To shane steichen and say that ain't,
AT man I can't i can't go to battle behind.

Speaker 1 (02:01:12):
That, guy well he also completes about forty eight percent of.
His passes that doesn't help, him either and he's an extremely,
talented guy but that doesn't mean you're a great. Quarterback
yet and there's A Reason, daniel jones who's in the
prime of his career, we'll see was brought there and
it was too compete to find out and see if
you can bring out the Best in Anthony richards and
he wasn't brought there just to be. A guy i
think that competition is going to be different than, you

(02:01:33):
think and they want somebody who's, got it and we'll
See If anthony richardson's ability can stave. It off but
you can't live at, forty eight, forty five forty six, percent,
completion guy no matter how athletic, you are the league
will pass.

Speaker 8 (02:01:43):
You.

Speaker 4 (02:01:44):
By well and it's also to the amount of running around.
HE does, i mean if you're going to, do that then.
GET down, i mean because you try to take hits
from these guys that are driving like. Mac trucks you're
saying that to about a guy who's about six y
four about.

Speaker 1 (02:01:56):
Two, fifty yeah you're saying about a. Big cat that's
no small. Kid there well look a. Big boy look
what Happened To, Big ben look what Happened To. CAM newton,
i mean eventually that credit card bill. Comes, due well
it'll wear on you, That Eventually josh allen's gonna probably
have to limit his. Hits too no matter how big,
you are they're they're giving. Them out but there's fresh.
Legs now it doesn't mean you don't take them on,
when necessary but you don't have to take them on.

Speaker 4 (02:02:17):
Every play that's PRETTY. Much Cj stroud seeing that the
people hey man take off and. Run more his response,
probably was WHY so i can get hit MORE than
i already am in?

Speaker 5 (02:02:25):
The backfield yeah, the hell maybe he'll get.

Speaker 1 (02:02:28):
Hit less i've always believed the bigger hits come in
the pocket than they, do outside because at least your
head's on a swivel and your back's. Not turned, you
see things in front of you as you're, headed downhill
so you can kind of get into pockets of safety
and get down or get out. Of Bound so i've
always the BIGGEST hits i ever took in my career weren't.
Running out it was staying in the pocket where you
just can't see the guy. From behind hit me in,
the back in, the back or you'll wheel into a

(02:02:50):
big hit at. Least there now it's third and twelve
and you got to scramble and get me twelve YARDS
and i got to take on somebody that's, six five two.
THIRTY five i could probably pull, that Off Just, allen
canon and we've all had to pull. It off the
key is it doesn't matter how big. You are eventually
they start to take. Their toll and you're no good.
To me if you're my starting quarterback and you were playing,

(02:03:10):
tough guy we know.

Speaker 5 (02:03:11):
You're tough.

Speaker 1 (02:03:11):
That's fine and playing tough guy and taking on a
linebacker and a strong safety on a, regular basis you'll
end up handing the starter to gatorade because you've got
your shoulder and a sling time and a place to take.
Those hits and, every quarter, every carry every time is not.

Speaker 4 (02:03:24):
The, place well there's a reason why they Say the
oklahoma drill has sent more guys to basketball courts and
baseball fields than any other drill home the.

Speaker 1 (02:03:30):
Horror field we used to do it all the time
and see or it brought you into a tougher team
that allowed you to run the ball anytime you wanted
and wear. PEOPLE out i look at it the, other
side that drill was very very responsible for our guys
being quite frankly tougher than most we ever.

Speaker 5 (02:03:44):
Played, against upfront we always were speaking of running. The
ball there might be a play that you can't.

Speaker 4 (02:03:49):
Run anymore we'll discuss that here as we CONTINUE the
nfl topics here On The Sean.

Speaker 1 (02:03:54):

eyes heal instead of, doing it because then the lasick
part of it because of, the infection your eyes won't
be the same the way you do it if. It's
CLEAR and i, Found, that yeah it, sounds logical but

Was impressive and he'll do that. For you he's the

him and grateful for the ability to see simply THE
things i wanted him to be SAFER when i drive around.

Morning, guys dan thank you very much for taking, this
CALL and i was. Very impressed i've heard that you
had been In the happines pavition that was a real.
Rat Hole, and sean Welcome. To america because This, Is.
America texas we love to have people such. As yourself
the reason for my call is. TWO parts i just

(02:06:58):
want to say thank you To mister brain for fighting.
So hard there's this wonderful podcast on how he fought
to KEEP the pga here and more importantly in the
at the time where it. Was slotted and, You, Know
tom I'm. A hugetorian i Lived, In, Houston, shiner texas And.
Little hoicktown but for him to fight so hard to

(02:07:21):
keep it where it was, IN it, i mean imagine
HAVING a Pga In, august hell nobody would. Show up and,
my other my other thing is that, you know When
the rockets beat, these sons they said something about that
we get their first. Round pick it's a lottery pick
if it becomes a. Lottery PICK and I. Love, durant

(02:07:41):
okay it's a little, thin SKIN but i love Him
why and when he limped off the field of, THE uh,
i say pitch.

Speaker 5 (02:07:50):
The court THE court.

Speaker 12 (02:07:52):
I was i was kind of kind of glad because
can we get the. Lottery pick i'm going to hang up,
AND yeah i have a.

Speaker 4 (02:08:00):
BLESSED day i appreciate the Call. D man in terms
of the golf angle, OF it, i, mean yeah you had.
The tournament it was In what november somewhere, like that
where it was pretty MUCH the pga season. Was over
you weren't really getting any of the top tier guys
to come here. And Play and sean that's the thing
when it Was To Shelle houston open Out at woodlands,
for years would go out there see. Him play THE

(02:08:22):
old tpc you'd Have Like, fred couples you'd have like
some of the guys out, there playing but for the,
most part you didn't have the fields that you're, getting
now and like you Had at redstone for, some time
where You have phil coming out, to play you've got
any of the other top tier guys that are out.
There playing, we're, like, OH hey i don't just have
to watch these GUYS. ON tv i get to see them.
Here Now And, JIM crane i mean with the relationships

(02:08:43):
he's got in the. Golf industry the top two guys
in the world playing in the field, this week and
one of them almost won It In. Scottie scheffler the
Other one, rory McElroy.

Speaker 1 (02:08:51):
Who was won twice this year At The pebble beach
and At The. Players championship so he's playing great golf
the and when it's, silly season and it's just like
guys will show up trying to win a tournament where
it's a minimal field of the. Best players you can
go grab a million bucks if you. Play well that's
what he used to. Be now, in truth even With
The valero Open In, san antonio the tune up was.

(02:09:14):
This week the way the golf course was, set up
there's a little. Less rough you can hit off some
i mean hit it in places you can miss and.
Still score and we've seen that happen Before. At augusta
although they've changed in lengthened golf course and stuff and all.
Those things but all these guys are long enough for
the most part to attack par. Five's there but this

(02:09:34):
is the tune up to get yourself right because a
lot of Guys like scheffler. And McElroy we'll go early
to augustin play And the valero is. Also reserved oh
you can get a win and sneak your way in
WITH A pga, tour, Win right so, for that not
that it won't be good, players there because they're always,
good players but the real tune up of getting, yourself
ready especially for guys who don't want to play the
Week before august and go there and.

Speaker 5 (02:09:54):
Tune up this, was it and it's brilliant to have.
It here it was.

Speaker 1 (02:09:59):
The way they had traffic going everything about it on
a course that you can probably play this week for.
Twenty bucks he's, pretty, Impressive man and they did the
main it's, the crew Not, just maine it's but the,
you know the greens keepers and the staff after the
rain to keep that and not only playable but in.
Pristine shape and then these guys. Love it it's a
great challenge and you got to dip into your bag

(02:10:21):
and hit different kinds of shots and when the wind.
Comes up so this is a tune up and. This
matters And the scheffler needed THIS because i don't imagine
he's Playing. INTO valero i think he's. Getting ready, you
know would, imagine McElroy who normally may not play in
this event right to come out here and do that
because he needs to get his. Game right even though he's,
run trice he's still not fully confident where.

Speaker 5 (02:10:39):
It is yet he's playing.

Speaker 1 (02:10:40):
Great golf, you know we know he can drive, the
ball and so, next week if you, can't put you ain't.
Winning there so this is a good. Tune up and
it's ALSO too i mean where it is in. THE
city i mean respected golf, tournament, TOO right, i mean
and that's what. IT'S become i MEAN because i mentioned.
About it when it used to be Out, the woodlands
that's all fine. And Good the woodlands is more built
up than it was about twenty. Years ago but being out.

(02:11:01):
THERE numble, i mean these guys staying in. The area
they're right here in the middle of.

Speaker 4 (02:11:05):
The city nice, golf course really nice area of town
that little by little word travels around where, it's, like
hey you might want to Go. Play houston's that's a
pretty nice little stop. Right there you're gonna get everything
that you. Want, more yeah it's set up.

Speaker 6 (02:11:18):
So well.

Speaker 1 (02:11:18):
It's amazing all. This time as MUCH as i, love
GOLF that i have not gone out there. And played
that's gonna. Change soon it's worth the day off to
go out there. And play so but they did a
great job setting it up and got himself a hell
of a tournament because it looked with five stroke lead
and three and then four strokes and three strokes A
Min wu lee was just gonna be.

Speaker 5 (02:11:38):
Fine and take care.

Speaker 1 (02:11:39):
Of it but he had to make a spectacular save
and get it to where he could tap in for.
The win but good, on him and it's his first
win and it's, nice HERE so i would imagine he
will continue to visit this place. As well as well
as he played and his, SCORING record, i mean he
was off the charts for. Four rounds he.

Speaker 5 (02:11:54):
Played great he even said as much in his post.

Speaker 4 (02:11:56):
Round interview, he said this is always gonna be a
special place to me because of getting that.

Speaker 1 (02:11:59):
First win and when you do go, Out there I'll
bring i'll Bring the. Bluetooth speaker yeah you. Got that
you gotta have, good music, that's it. That's, it yeah
we've got plenty.

Speaker 4 (02:12:09):
Of THAT, the nfl at least In The Competition committee
sean talking about banning the. Tush push as the, league
meetings the owners meetings happening right now Over, in florida
And the packers were the ones who brought it up to. Ban,
it well now it has at least some support within
committee to maybe get banned as ACCORDING, to espn it

(02:12:32):
was a hotly contested conversation, between coaches general managers and
owners as they gathered, this week and that the back
and forth got quote heated over.

Speaker 1 (02:12:43):
Said, PLAY yeah i if it, doesn't pass it's not
going to because they're worried. About injuries they'll tell, you
that and you. Should be it's. A day, i mean
think about. The quarterbacks got people coming in one way
and he's. Got in sometimes it's a non quarterback doing.
It right he'll come in there from the, tight position your,
athletic guy and then you've got two or three guys
push him, FROM behind i mean one, you know.

Speaker 5 (02:13:05):
Bend backwards so.

Speaker 1 (02:13:06):
It's, dangerous yeah quarterbacks hate quarterback, sneaks anyway because people
fly through and hit you in the helmet and they
can't do anything. About it then you're just flying through
trying to make. A play they don't because it's not.
In space it's all, you know you're. Protecting yourself but
the reason why Is that philadelphia does it? So, well
hell it feels like they can do it from the
four yard line and getting the end.

Speaker 9 (02:13:23):
Z on.

Speaker 5 (02:13:23):
It's nuts but you can't.

Speaker 1 (02:13:25):
Stop it nobody, stops it so it'll only makes sense
that if you can't, beat them you either join them
or you. Ban it so that's why they'll tell you
it's for. Health purposes but it's also the teams that
don't like it are getting their ass kicked by It
because philadelphia runs it better than anybody in. The WORLD
but i do get, BECAUSE hell i think that's as
dangerous and you KNOW how i am. About it we

(02:13:46):
overrule and, overprotect quarterbacks but when you got that much
real estate on top of you pushing you, from behind
tendons and joints aren't made up for that if you
get bent the. Wrong way but, it's football, you know
Going in I'm sure philadelphia doesn't want a band because.

Speaker 5 (02:14:00):
They can you can't.

Speaker 1 (02:14:00):
Stop it but if it starts to get to that
point where there's voices that loud in there, against it.

Speaker 5 (02:14:06):
You may not see.

Speaker 4 (02:14:07):
That AGAIN and i mean you factor In That jalen
hurts can lift. THE world, i mean that's part of
what makes the play what it is that it's just
snapp the ball. To them maybe you have somebody, push
them but a lot of times he doesn't even. Need
it and their interior.

Speaker 1 (02:14:20):
Movement with the guys there are two guards and center
and the tackles to prevent penetration and to, you know
they just do. It right and then you've got a
physical quarterback who's a stud with push and then put
behind him however.

Speaker 5 (02:14:32):
You exploit.

Speaker 1 (02:14:33):
It's hard can you imagine trying to teach that to. Somebody,
else well here's what. You do you got to have
these three studs, behind you are these two, guys pushing
and this team low man wins all. Those things it's hard.
To teach you're either good at it. Or Not and
philadelphia just execute it like, most people or quite frankly
better than most people's short yardage and.

Speaker 5 (02:14:49):
GOAL line i am sure that they'd like to keep.

Speaker 4 (02:14:51):
This intact this, just then most weak dudes cannot squat seven,
hundred Pounds and jalen hurts he can squat, side yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:14:59):
And he's a and he's really elevating, his play and
it seems some big games the guy has no absolutely.
Zero stress his poise has been like that since he
was a freshman, in college probably in. High school didn't
see him play in. HIGH school i saw him as
freshman YEAR and, i THOUGHT and i said it out
loud to my buddies that when s when They kicked
SC's Acid, in arlington is that? Kid there just, the

(02:15:22):
point the way he. Carried Himself and i'd never seen
him play in. MY life i Wasn't in TEXAS or,
i WAS but i wasn't watching him play high. School
football this kid was poised then and all through. His
career he's never made, it excuse just stays. The course
and now you're putting him into your top players because
in big games he plays better than most guys doing regular,
season GAMES which.

Speaker 5 (02:15:41):
I love, he's pressing.

Speaker 1 (02:15:43):
He's impressive you can tell he GOT some dna, and
coaching you Know this, pops coach and he.

Speaker 5 (02:15:49):
Gets it kid. Gets it. He's. Poised man, he's.

Speaker 4 (02:15:52):
Different no doubt. About it and different quarterbacks usually are
the ones that win. It all and that's what they.

Speaker 6 (02:15:56):
Just did.

Speaker 4 (02:15:57):
All right coming, UP next I think i Know where
sean stands, on this but it seems like he might
be in. The minority we'll discuss that right here On
The Sean, Salisbury Show sports talk.

Speaker 5 (02:16:06):
Seven ninety.

Speaker 3 (02:16:09):
This Is The Sean. Salisbury, show yes that's. Very nice
now with that fresh. Leather scent First On sports talk.
Seven ninety.

Speaker 13 (02:16:22):
There.

Speaker 4 (02:16:23):
You go koug's moving on to the. Final four they're
gonna Take on Duke. On Saturday the astros getting ready
for a series With the giants after taking two or
three From the mets over, the weekend And the texans
agreeing to a one year deal with Veteran Linebacker. Emir speed,
one year five million dollars for. That deal we're talking
TO the nfl. Right now we're just talking about the

(02:16:45):
league trying to ban the. Tush push and That's where
john on the northwest side wants.

Speaker 5 (02:16:48):
To go what's?

Speaker 11 (02:16:49):
Going, on?

Speaker 13 (02:16:49):
John, say man, Looking, HERE man i got, to say
this IS what i, talked about the. Twitch, push, Look
man i'll due respect to. My man he Happy That
kevin direct. Got hurt Hold the rocket team keep the. Lockery.
Picked wow, but.

Speaker 5 (02:17:05):
Listen man this.

Speaker 13 (02:17:05):
TOUS push i, love. It man. It's innovative it give
the fans something new to. Look at its man, On
man macho on, macho defense on, defensive line on, offensive
line and it's you know this thing Here With andy
reid and That coach sean what's his Name? For buffalo

(02:17:28):
you know what they got? In common they both got
beat down By The philadelphia Eagles and sean what's his
Name For? Buffalo, bills man. That's hypocritical here it is
in the playoff Game Against. Kansas city you.

Speaker 8 (02:17:42):
TRIED it i don't know how.

Speaker 13 (02:17:43):
Many times bad. Bad decision it looked like you were
trying to run it on, one leg like you had a.
BROKEN leg i Like what. Tomlin said, TOMLIN said i
think you shouldn't punish any team. That's innovative you talk.
Gone right let me ask. You something every game that was, ever, invented,
football baseball and, his sport it was invented by, one

(02:18:07):
person and it. Was innovative what are we supposed. To
do we're supposed to stop every invention that has ever
been invented in the world because you can't figure out
how to. Stop It when bellichick that year Had randed
moss and he was going thirty five party points, on
teams and all them coaches got all up shit whether

(02:18:29):
he shouldn't.

Speaker 6 (02:18:29):
Do that it's not Right what.

Speaker 13 (02:18:33):
Bellichick say you say. Stop it let me tell, YOU
man i. Love, IT man i hope they don't do
that they. TOOK away, i mean remember that what was?
The Charm THE shotgune i. Think invented what was the
other thing that all is used? To run? The shooting something.

Speaker 5 (02:18:47):
Running running shoot? Running, shooting, yeah, YEAH man.

Speaker 13 (02:18:52):
I mean i know you guys got, gotta LIKE but
i ain't gonna lie to TELL you i. STILL like
i still wish we still had that clothes line that was.

Speaker 3 (02:18:58):
So funny.

Speaker 13 (02:19:01):
That was. So funny, but, hey man that. That too it, Puts,
man hey you know what? You, stopped hey defensive coordinators
and head coaches take a few most sleepless nice and
pig out how to stop it quick crying. And Whine
and i'm gonna listen to what you guys got to say,
about it Don't You disapartment john appreciate.

Speaker 1 (02:19:22):
THE call i PERSONALLY don't i understand the injury part.
Of it but if the team that's running it isn't
worried about, the injury the football is going to tell
you they're worried about. Every Injury Yet derek henry will
Play on sunday and then you'll play them Again. ON thursday,
i mean SO, the nfl while they make care because,
of lawsuits they just really want what's best for offensive

(02:19:45):
football and for the for the optics and to. Do
IT and i know, they care but that's not the.
Only PRIORITY and i just. Don't UNDERSTAND while i know,
it's dangerous it's still within the legal confines of football everything.
We do who seems to want to change and put gimmicks?
ON it i guess until somebody proves they can. Stop

(02:20:06):
it and how many serious injuries have? We HAD and
i know, people, say well what are we gonna wait till?
What happens the, truth is if you're successful at, doing
it you do not want. This ELIMINATED and I understand
philadelphia's point, TO me i guess you better line eleven
people up between the tackles if you want to have
a chance to.

Speaker 5 (02:20:24):
STOP it i do get.

Speaker 1 (02:20:26):
The injury i'm more worried about the QUARTERBACK than i
am anybody else because people hitting him on the back
of the legs and pushing. And pushing but right now
we probably have a lot more injuries doing a lot of.
OTHER things i don't have any problem. WITH it i don't,
Know why so, what's next we're gonna ELIMINATE. The Rpo mel,
KIPER wants i mean said last year he wants To eliminate.
Cover two he said we Should eliminate cover two because

(02:20:49):
he doesn't want safeties over. The top he wants us
to be able to throw the deep ball all, the
Time and cover two takes. That AWAY and I, love
meil but. That's it that's as dumb as. It gets
taking away a base coverage IN the nfl that people
use all the time with. ELEVEN players i don't. Get
it so, to me we spend so much time changing
gimmicks and this may look like a gimmick, to some
But The philadelphia eagles do not get stopped, with this

(02:21:10):
so until, THEY do i don't have a problem. WITH
it i just don't because it's something. Somebody, does well
what are we going? To do start to eliminate four
wides or tell defenses they can only blitz in the
first and third play of. THE series, i mean we're
close out is so let it be go stop it
until you prove to you can. Stop it then you,
know what maybe you better join them and find out
how to.

Speaker 4 (02:21:30):
Execute, It, well sean it actually goes the opposite DIRECTION
because nfl Owners And Commissioner, roger goodell they're so concerned
about injuries they want to play an extra regular. Season
game they want eighteen regular season, Games now and it
seems like that plan is going to be discussed further
this week and ford the going.

Speaker 1 (02:21:47):
To happen it's going. To happen it just is the
revenue is. Too much it's going, to, happen which, in
truth we should just do what college does eliminate. Preseason
games we're down. To two you're going to play a
few snips in one. Risk injury we got it now
where spring teams are not because of the transfer portal
injuries and the way they're going about their business, with

(02:22:08):
recruiting teams are not even having spring. Football games my
university's won a usc we're not having spring. Football practice string.
Football game that was where Fifty thousand Hell At, Ohio,
state michigan seventy five thousand people show up the. Damn
thing that's their schools that, Are, saying nope we're not
having spring. Football game so what's the use? Right now because,

(02:22:28):
IN truth i learned more about a team in preseason
practice EVERY team i ever Played on you didn't learn
more about a guy in the games you did take in.
Fifteen snaps you learn more about the daily grind of
two day practices, every day how consistent you were when
you were tired as a right, guard quarterback putting string
and practice after. Practice together and that was when you
could go two practices in, a row two days in,

(02:22:48):
a row five days in a row in.

Speaker 5 (02:22:49):
Full gear so there's no doubt and you see it
and you see it and you. See it so, FOR
me i.

Speaker 1 (02:22:58):
To the point now you talk to coaches all the
game was a validation of what you saw a guy. In,
practice oh he, runs around, flies around plays ten. Ten
snaps if you forced your starters to play three quarters for,
two games it's.

Speaker 5 (02:23:10):
One thing why don't we just get rid?

Speaker 2 (02:23:12):
Of them do what?

Speaker 1 (02:23:13):
College does they're the pros. Now anyway just just save.
Your injuries have practice among other teams where you bring
a team to practice against you for two or. Three
days that's kind of your. Preseason game you guys can
and then you can. Control it you can have officials
in doing that all out. There practice he got seven,
on seven going on nine on seven without all the full.
Game stuff nobody cares about the, record anyway maybe the

(02:23:35):
one game that's at the at the At the Hall,
of fame Play a Hall of, fame game somebody gets
to play. In it but for the, most part if
you're going to play eighteen regular season games and you know,
the preseason you're not going to show your players anyway.
Or anything, you do have, training camp have it a
month long or whatever, it is get rid of, the
games and just scrimmage your scrimmage other teams and go.

Speaker 5 (02:23:55):
From there because.

Speaker 1 (02:23:56):
It's useless you're not going to play guys And, that
now the guy who's the FIFTH round, i pick trying
to make a team or a, free agent would.

Speaker 5 (02:24:01):
Like THAT but i got news.

Speaker 1 (02:24:03):
For you if you play well on the practice field those,
preseason games that's where, the performance that's. Just validation if
you're good in those games in two preseason games and
suck consistently on the, practice field their decisions.

Speaker 5 (02:24:15):
Already made in mine.

Speaker 1 (02:24:17):
Would, be now there's some guys who are veterans that don't,
practice well but are gamers that have been in league.

Speaker 5 (02:24:22):
Ten years i've done about a.

Speaker 1 (02:24:23):
Young guy the consistency you showed day to day in
practice far more tells me about you than eight snaps
in a preseason game against the.

Speaker 4 (02:24:33):
THIRD team i don't find out much about. You there
don't give away the good stuff. For free it's basically
WHAT the nfl is. Getting to and the way that
they're going to, Pass this sean is they're going to.
Tell teams they're gonna, tell players, all right now we
can make a fifty six man rosters because then, it's.

Speaker 5 (02:24:47):
Hey we got jobs.

Speaker 1 (02:24:48):
For guys and here's also what they're, gonna, do though
they're going, to try And maybe i'm crazy that if
your salary is ten million bucks a year for, seventeen
games they're going to try to make your salary be
ten million bucks a year for. Eighteen games they're going
to try to add the game and say that your
contract is one that's just part. Of it yet when your,
training camp you don't get paid your salary in. Training

(02:25:10):
camp there's a, certain fee, you know certain veterans make
and rookies make certain now out WHERE where i don't
know what. It IS when, i came it was like
for a veteran it was like seven hundred and fifty
dollars a week during. Training camp now it's far higher.
Than that now but you don't get your you don't
get you play everything. The same they're charging same price
for a ticket in regular season as they do in.

Speaker 5 (02:25:31):
THE preseason, I think I don't i, don't Go but.

Speaker 1 (02:25:33):
I'm assuming So you your players are, out there they're
not getting, full sided but they're busting. Their ASS and i.
Get it, people, say well they're, making ten fifteen to.
TWENTY million i understand it's out of whack compared to
the what all of our parents. Have Done but i'm
just talking about it in. Football terms you're not getting,
your Salary but i'm telling you that i'd fight it
if you're going to make me play an extra real

(02:25:54):
game and you're not going to add. The extra so
if let's say your game checks two hundred and, fifty
grand h don't you get an automatic game check if
you're playing an?

Speaker 5 (02:26:02):
Extra game? Shouldn't you or now? Do they now all
we got to cut it up.

Speaker 1 (02:26:07):
Into it eighteen pieces as opposed to. Seventeen pieces but
the salary we negotiated is the way. It is my thought,
process is even no matter how much, you're making if
you're making three hundred and twenty five grand, a game
because you make that much money that they need to
add that at the end of your salary is in
a dendum to. Your contract you're playing an extra, real one.

Speaker 8 (02:26:27):
A.

Speaker 1 (02:26:27):
Real one say they're trying to get, without giving and
if you're the, player's association you should fight that and
make sure if they're going, to eighteen you're getting paid for.

Speaker 5 (02:26:35):
Eighteen games.

Speaker 4 (02:26:36):
Not SEVENTEEN Well a maannon knows a lot ABOUT, The nfl,
march madness everything. In Between He's kevin harlan and he
joins us coming up, Right Here sean, salisbury Show.

Speaker 5 (02:26:45):

But The Sewn salsbury. SHOW continues NBA.

Speaker 5 (02:27:46):
On Tnt He's, kevin harland he.

Speaker 1 (02:27:48):
Joins, us, now yeah you think that we'd give the guy. A,
break okay you know He's In san francisco calling, college
basketball CALLS, the nba and here we are bugging him in.
The morning but we're. So Grateful kevin harland. Joins, us
kevin great to have you, with us my man from COLLEGE.
To nba let me before we start on any specific Team,
like florida how do you do it schedule wise at

(02:28:08):
this stage and keep your energy up from game, to
game broadcast. To broadcast, My.

Speaker 8 (02:28:13):
Man Well sometimes i'm not Sure that i'm able to
do it is as WELL as i once did in
terms of. The energy but when you get in the
arena and in back of that table and we're in
a press box in a, football stadium things just seem
to kind of take over it and you forget about
being tired or anything, like that and you just kind

(02:28:35):
of you just kind of get caught up in the
game and get lost in. The broadcast, So fortunately i'm
in a BUSINESS that i ENJOY and i Like tonight
lakers In. The rockets that's it has been a long
couple of weeks of, The TOURNAMENT but i can't wait
to get back TO the nba tonight and this week

(02:28:56):
really when Tomorrow and denver and then BACK in La,
on THURSDAY so i get a chance to see some
of the, best teams especially In The. Western conference In
the rockets are in that in that conversation, for sure
and anxious to see where they are here in the
home stretch of the. Regular season is we get ready for?

Speaker 1 (02:29:12):
The, PLAYOFFS well i got news, for you, my man
that that energy shows all, The time so you don't
have to worry. About that that hasn't wanged one, SINGLE
bit i, promise you and we freaking. Love, it kevin
if you had a have you called your dream?

Speaker 5 (02:29:26):
Game yet in?

Speaker 1 (02:29:27):
Any sport is there something you haven't done yet in
this business of calling all? These sports is there something
you haven't done yet that you'd like?

Speaker 3 (02:29:34):
To, do yeah you KNOW what.

Speaker 8 (02:29:36):
I think I think i'm just waiting to have that
that BROADCAST where i can take off the headset, and, say.

Speaker 6 (02:29:44):
Boy that really.

Speaker 8 (02:29:45):
Felt GOOD and i think there's everything that you, put into,
you know leading to. That thought but at the end of,
the day it's it's hard, to have, you know check
every box and say that everything about that broadcast it's
just the way you. Wanted it the game may be
good and that, won't disappoint but a lot of times

(02:30:07):
maybe you think of a different phrase or a different
way of kind of forming or framing something and that
will always stick with you and then you use it
for the next game and try. To improve and that's
kind OF what i try to. Do it there's been no,
perfect broadcast at least, for ME and I guess i'm
always kind of striving to get better every, every broadcast
Even though i've been in the business for a. LONG

(02:30:28):
time i think we're. Always evolving the challenge is to
be as perfect. As possible and if there's.

Speaker 6 (02:30:36):
A game, to do, You know.

Speaker 8 (02:30:38):
I've done i've done The Sixteen super bowls And Five,
final FOURS and i don't know that really. There IS
i'm i think just MAINTAINING where i am right now
is enough of a challenge and trying to do. That
WELL but i enjoy every every challenge that comes, my
way and certainly every game that comes, my way and

(02:31:00):
very thankful for.

Speaker 5 (02:31:00):
My, Position, HEY kevin i think perception.

Speaker 1 (02:31:02):
And broadcasts, you know you go to game, to game
the game kind of tells the story and paints a
picture in a, live broadcast WHICH which. I get but
you had mentioned that you never walk out of a.
Perfect broadcast and with all the people listening and want.
To hear This Is kevin HARLAN obviously TNT And cbs
sports and one of the best we have in this
business for a. Long time do you are you still
critically yourself when you walk off? A broadcast do you

(02:31:23):
still go do you do you like when you go
back to? The hotel did do you steal? Over it good?

Speaker 6 (02:31:27):
Or?

Speaker 5 (02:31:27):
Bad it does it fester?

Speaker 8 (02:31:29):
With?

Speaker 6 (02:31:29):
YOU absolutely i.

Speaker 8 (02:31:32):
MEAN absolutely i mean there are some nights that are
worse and some nights that that don't have. As, MUCH
boy i got to see that last, two MINUTES or
i want to watch that. LAST half i watch basically
EVERY game. I do i keep notes Of what i'm
doing right And what i'm. Doing WRONG and i, just

(02:31:52):
think like in any walk, in life, you know if
you're if you're always kind of analyzing how you're, doing
it the reaction you have after, doing it and and
areas that you feel you. Can improve, you know it's
it's not it's not too different really from a coach
during a game, who, says now we've got a lot
of stuff to, Clean up we've got a lot of
things you've got, to improve we need even though. They've

(02:32:14):
won sometimes you you spot the issues and and continually
kind of zero went. ON that i think a little
paranoia in this business. IS good i think it helps.
Drive you and NOT that i, am PARANOID but I
think i have a little bit, of it to the
point that it that it's helpful to navigate a pretty

(02:32:37):
competitive business where there's a lot of people going for.
These jobs we none of us take them, for granted.
BUT NO I i i critique and self analyze all,
the time AND sometimes i know and to kind of
back off, and say you know what it's let's let

(02:32:58):
it breathe for a day or two, or three and
then go back, and watch and invariably it's never as
good as you think and never as bad as. You
think it's somewhere. In BETWEEN but I guess i'm more
in the thing of listing the Areas that i'd like,
to tweak polish off on, the margins and try to
make it better the. Next time and that's what kind

(02:33:18):
of keeps. YOU going i think if you, EVER exhale
i think you find yourself. In TROUBLE and I if
i do begin to exhale and don't get that energy
by sitting with that headset on and ready, to Go
then i'll know it's probably time to.

Speaker 1 (02:33:32):
STEP aside i got news for AS an ocd. Guy
here it's so nice to hear that one of the
best in the business still feels. That Way so i'm
not the only. One GRINDING and i look at we
sit here and listen to, you say does he? Make
mistakes does he grind like the rest?

Speaker 8 (02:33:44):
Of us?

Speaker 1 (02:33:44):
Mere Mortals kevin harlan joins us here for a couple. More,
minutes kevin you're In That san francisco Region. Watching, florida
boy they played good basketball down a, stretch here AND
then i have a hell of a CHALLENGE. Against auburne
but Sticking, to florida what should people that maybe didn't
cover it as intensely as you did through this? March
madness what should we be looking forward to or what
are we going to see when they get Here To.

Speaker 5 (02:34:05):
San, antonio well they've got they got some.

Speaker 8 (02:34:08):
Real talent at. The guard they've got a lot of size.
Up front they go four, deep upfront and that's tough
for any team.

Speaker 6 (02:34:14):
To.

Speaker 8 (02:34:14):
Match uh they seem to play very well in. The
system they know who needs the. Ball light they don't
blink that they're coming out of the best conference in.
The country so that's given them the kind of callous,
THEY need i think to face any kind. Of challenge as,
you say they're they're gonna see some, some conference some

(02:34:36):
conference members when they Get To, san antonio and that's
gonna make it that's gonna make. It Interesting But texas
tech gave them all they. Could handle the, other Night
The red raiders played a really. Good game they just.
Couldn't close and and that may be Another thing i'd
Add about florida is they've got. A closer this Wal
to clayton is The First Team. All america he's a,

(02:35:00):
terrific player and they've got. A closer so if you've
got depth and you've, got size you play well within.
The system guard play in, this tournament guard playing college
basketball overall is. Just imperative and if you've got, a closure,
You know florida checks all, those boxes they're going to
be very difficult.

Speaker 1 (02:35:18):
To Beat AND stee, I, mean kevin you're talking about
we're talking, about teams and listen to the broadcast And watching,
florida play and you Mentioned and i've said it on,
This one kevin, many times did guard play while you
love the bigs and got to keep them out of.
Foul trouble guard plays so important in, perimeter play and
it really is a guard league. Right now to win this,
whole thing bad guard play equals probably not hoisting.

Speaker 8 (02:35:41):
The, trophy yeah guard play and, outside shooting able to
spread and even if you're not a, big team you
still need to spread. The floor and it's just, you
know we've seen IT the Nba With steph curry and
other great three, point shooters and college game is doing

(02:36:01):
the same thing and they've been. Doing it it's just
harder to find good shooters at the. College level and
a lot of these big programs are going to the
mid major market and getting kids From The, missouri VALLEY the,
a ten you name the mid. Major conference they're rating
those conferences because a lot of times the kid may not,

(02:36:24):
be big you may not be a, great athlete but
there's a lot of shooting at. That level and if
you play a couple of years the college game and have,
you know the kind.

Speaker 6 (02:36:36):
Of system, in place that will translate to, you KNOW,
an Sec a, big Twelve.

Speaker 2 (02:36:44):
A.

Speaker 8 (02:36:44):
Big ten and so they're rating these these mid majors
lest we don't see a lot of mid majors really
shoving their way into the sweet sixteen and certainly not
the elite eight In the, final four because they've they've
they've been drained of their talent and they're making the
most of it at the. Next level and shooting seems
to be a commodity that that mid major can support the.

(02:37:06):
Major Conferences With clayton friends Played at iona in the Mid,
at planic and that was a. Great find he's been there.
Two years he's built. Himself up he's playing with major,
college players but his three point shooting and ball handling
things that were prized at the mid major or even

(02:37:28):
more valued at the. Major level one.

Speaker 1 (02:37:30):
Minute or two Left With kevin harlan before you get
him back to one of his twenty seven jobs that
he's got. To do joins us here as we roll
along The Great. Kevin harlan you know the voice needs. No,
Introduction kevin is it good to have four? ONE seeds
i think you Know where. I'm going we know it's
great basketball obviously in. This tournament but is having four
to one seeds good for college basketball's?

Speaker 8 (02:37:51):
VIEWING pleasure i think even better than the four? Number
ones and, you're right it certainly plays. A role i
really think that the major component for driving ratings and
driving the intense interest are individual players that. Can start

(02:38:12):
and we saw it last year in college Basketball With
Angel Reason, caitlin clark And with Paige at Yukon And
juju OUT at usc and all these fabulous. Individual players
the college game we're in such, transition now but we're

(02:38:32):
seeing older rosters and names that stick around the college
game for three to. Five years so we're beginning to
pick up. On that and every once in a while
we're getting these decorated freshmen that come in and just
seem to really. Be captivating and we've got That. In
flag so there are elements here which would tell you

(02:38:53):
that this will be a very highly ranked, final four
but the individual player really drives, the RATINGS and i
expect that will be the Case In san antonio.

Speaker 5 (02:39:06):
This WEEKEND as i let you, Go here kevin just
you maybe he'sn't.

Speaker 1 (02:39:09):
A fan maybe the broadcast part of you and a
fan part of you as a sports fan are separate
and you can. Compartmentalize them maybe. They're together i'm just
curious what you think about the transfer portal being opened during.

Speaker 5 (02:39:19):
The, tournament well it's tough on.

Speaker 8 (02:39:22):
These coaches for the majority of, these programs they can
THEY can, i think navigate it well because they're. Finished
playing but for the programs that are, still in, you
know it makes it incredibly difficult to try to. Do
that we had all the coaches that we were Seeing
At san francisco and even Up in milwaukee in the

(02:39:44):
first and. Second round We had, kentucky there and We
Had north, carolina there and We had. Illinois there coaches
are spending their mornings before practice with two hours on,
a zoom, you know going over the portal and trying
to figure out. Who's available now you're doing the on,
you know the actual interviews with the kids beginning This,
past monday so or a weekend. To it and it's

(02:40:07):
very difficult to at this level manage the kids you've
got and try to look ahead when everything is so
right in front, of you a chance to go to,
the eliteate a chance to go to the, final four
chance at a. National Championship And tom izzo said it
pretty well the other Day For, michigan States is i'm
going to worry about the Kids that i've got. Right

(02:40:28):
now i'm going to, put people, you know working on.
The portal my concern, right now my only concern Is Coaching.
Michigan state and of course we know, they've LOST so
I think i think that that it puts the very
few teams that are at the very top at somewhat of.
A disadvantage but when you see, these coaches know that
during the, morning hours they're on the portal talking to.

(02:40:50):
These kids and they're not trying to sell. The program
they're not trying to sell. Their scheme they're not trying,
to send, you know sell. Their culture the coaching staff
who they're. Playing with they're just trying to sell. With
money they're trying, to say, you know like we had
one of the coaches Here and i'll be quick. With
this one coach the other, day said we're talking to
a kid on the on the on the zoom you

(02:41:12):
know about and, the portal and and he's going to
be for us if he decides to come to our program.
About it, you know. He'll play he'll be, the fifth
sixth or seventh best player in his. Opening selva, you
know after they've tried to sell him and all the
things about, the program, the city, the campus, the schooling,
the culture, everything else it finally got, down to, all

(02:41:33):
right so what's your prize is at a million and
A half and they turned off the camera and they
muted the microphone, and SAID did i hear? That right did,
this player who may start a couple, of games but
we'll be a nice, bench player is asking for one
point five million dollars? To play and, they, said, hey
listen good luck they put everything back on, good luck wish.

(02:41:54):
You well if it doesn't, work out let's let's. Talk
again but a lot of times these are very short
conversations and they're all about money and only. About money
so the days of trying to sell how you coach
in the program and the system and, EVERYTHING else i
think those take a back seat to what's it going to.
Be now we all want to see them, get paid
and we're all, for that but there's going to have

(02:42:14):
to be a more level playing field because we're seeing
have and, have nots and we're seeing some programs that,
are Able Like ohio, state football but we get a
lot of money and buy buy basically a national championship
because they get all the. Best players and maybe there's
some of that true with the teams who've got Come
Into san antonio. This weekend it's a system that it's The.

Speaker 6 (02:42:35):
Wild west.

Speaker 8 (02:42:36):
It's uncontrolled everybody, acknowledges it and they're going to have
to find some. Common ground but this portal is tough
for these teams that have made it. This Far the,
Elite eight sweet sixteen and these other programs are getting
a chance now to catch up and get in their
first and make their take their first swings at some of,
these kids and maybe they're going to steal, a couple

(02:42:58):
but the major programs are always going to attract the,
major INTEREST and i think they feel like they can
still navigate it and succeed and play in a.

Speaker 1 (02:43:06):
Final, four yeah paying them's, One, Thing kevin, You're right
and then how We pay HM's got, a change there's
no question. About it and the focus on the current team.
Phenomenal stuff and with four, great TEAMS and i know
these offensive teams are coming Here in University of houston's
waiting to play some great defense.

Speaker 5 (02:43:21):
Against him it's going to be a great.

Speaker 1 (02:43:22):
Final Four, and kevin good luck on your twenty seven
more calls before we see, you again, My man and

Speaker 1 (02:43:37):
You too that's The Great Kevin hard and we'll come
back and discuss that voice is probably needs, no introduction but.
He calls think about all the broadcasts he called and
when he can still get up and still critique. His,
stuff dan it makes the amateur feel pretty good about
their game and knowing it's okay to be ocd about.

Speaker 5 (02:43:54):
Your performance so you GOT those la drivers around him hawking.
At him you're at. The background he and.

Speaker 1 (02:43:58):
