longtime friend, Shawn Salisbury, Bryan Lima, go Lobos. This is
the Shawn Salisbury Show.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Texans preparing for the Lions on Sunday night football Cowboys
beat by the Falcon seven one three two point two
five seven ninety is the number A joint got a
couple of guys I want to get in on this
Texans conversation. We'll start with John, John, welcome in.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Hey, how you doing man? What's happening?
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (00:41):
The Lions are pretty team man.
Speaker 4 (00:43):
I think Jared Golf should be in the MVP conversation
and Dan Campbell should be in the Coach of the
Year conversation.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
And they also got this get number ninety on the
D time.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Man. That's our office. Man. Uh, I think best low
with the offensive line.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
Tripley.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Can you talk to John. We got some connection issues
on on that end. Sound like a little bit of
a robot. See if we can get that fixed that.
We'll go to our guy, Adrian. Adrian, good morning, good.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
Morning, welcome back Ryan from your day arrist Thank you, sir,
I had to pick on you this morning.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
We missed a Friday. Yeah, I know, man, I appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
What's happening, uh not this offensive line? I don't understand
something I don't know. Maybe Sean can explain this. Last year,
our offensive line goes to shambles. Everybody's thinking the worst.
We get the best from all the replacements and everybody. Yeah,
we can't wait till this team gets back and offensive
(01:44):
line is healthy. How is it the offensive line we
waited for? That's all nice and healthy. It is worse
than the guys that they're replacing. Number two CJ. Los
Nico last year for a few games and his percentage
went up in completions. All the replacements were good. We've
(02:05):
been there seeing that. How is it this year Nico
goes out? We have a brand new replacement, We have
a brand new running back, and the backups are worse.
I don't understand what's going on over there, But we
got what eight days till the lines get here. We
(02:28):
might as well put the obituary in the paper right now,
to go in and put him out until next season.
If the lion feed like everybody else has been feeding
off this offensive line, and I hope the phone calls
over there in Nick Casario's office this week. He doesn't
pick up just one lineman, he picks up two or three.
(02:48):
That way, when we get back to football things this week,
they walk in, they see the new faces. Yeah, we
said we were gonna get it fixed. So now everybody's
job is on the line. You fellas, have a good day.
I'm off bout to go shopping with the daughter, so
I'm out here getting in my morning medication.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
And to the rest of y'all, hey appreciate Adrian a
little powered up dog like it.
Speaker 5 (03:13):
I wish I had an answer for him as to why.
I've tried to tell you how I feel. But the
simple it comes down to the simple execution. None of
us know why they're not other than we watch if
it's bad technique or what have you. Everybody has an
opinion but valid point on how they took a step backwards.
And I hate to break it to you, Adrian, but
we're not eight days away from it. And we're now
(03:34):
six days away from Sunday night football, right and so
and then the draft, I mean the uh.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
Yeah draft tomorrow traded to see the.
Speaker 5 (03:43):
Trade deadline ap for trade deadline tomorrow, and uh, I
don't think they're going to be able to get three linemen.
Most people, if they're in it, aren't given away linemen,
and if they're out of it, they're going to try
to fleece you knowing that you're struggling past protection and
one of your starters is now hurt. So I would
like to think they add somebody. The question is where
(04:04):
you if you go to the Raiders, can you go
get somebody on there? Because they're firing coaches and moving
on teams that are like, oh, I don't want to
say finished. I mean, look at the Rams. Rams were
finished weeks ago. Now they're at five hundred and in
the hunt in the NFC West. So can you go
pluck alignment from somewhere? But remember they have to come
(04:26):
in and learn the verbage unless you get him from Minnesota,
San Francisco, Cincinnati one of those teams that has the
same verbage as you you know around the league. So
if you're going to win the titles, probably with who's
in the building now and who's healthy, can you go
get one for depth and a guy who's he may
(04:47):
not be a Hall of Famer as an offensive lineman,
but is a productive player, maybe a traded line, what
are you gonna give up to get him?
Speaker 1 (04:53):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (04:54):
I would imagine they're making calls and do you need
another weapon? Maybe depending on how bad n Eco cons
is and knowing that Stefan Diggs has done for the year,
so uh, upgrade. But the truth is, if you're gonna
win it, what's in the building right now is going
to be the difference, not outside the building. Even though
we all wish that we could get you know, another great,
another big time you can go out and snatch a
(05:14):
big time receiver, and then you can grab a depth
somewhere else and get a stud all pro offensive lineman
that somebody's trying to part with because I don't want
to pay a salary. I got news for you. Trent
Williams ain't available, but I get Adrian's point.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
Let's keep on getting out to the phone line seven
one three, Andy, good morning.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Oh yeah, you're right you And it's gotta be inside
that office. And again said people behind the starting guys
are not as good as the starting guys. So yeah,
they're in a world of hurts. So it's up to
Bobby Slowy to figure it out. Basically, he's got to
figure out how to protect his quarterback and what scheme
(05:56):
he can run to do that. Do you have many
pass attempts? You don't make catches? And Mixing had last game?
Speaker 1 (06:04):
Uh? What maybe one or two? Maybe?
Speaker 3 (06:07):
How about Zebra, a guy who q is one of
probably one of the top five running backs, is catching
the ball out in the backfield over the last four
or five years, and you're not utilizing it, and especially
where you meet him to maybe help with a defensive
(06:27):
end and then slide out into the flat. I'll take
Mixing out in the flat against the linebacker twenty four
to seven. That's just that's just stupidity. Now do you
remember the first play that the offense were hand last week?
Do you remember? Now, look at this, but this is
a first play, right, he's having trouble with the offense.
(06:48):
The offense is struggling, and this is the first play.
Do you remember that? Do you remember the play?
Speaker 1 (06:54):
I don't.
Speaker 4 (06:54):
We don't.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
Okay, I'm gonna tell you.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
You know why.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
I remember it because I'm sitting at my neighborhood bar
and I look over at my buddies and I go,
he has no clue. He runs, He spreads two wide
receivers left two right mix within the backfield. The far
left wide receiver is Stover, so that means a cornerback
(07:19):
is going to cover him. No linebacker is going to
run out and cover a tight end far out. They
clear out, They clear out, everybody runs deep and Stover
runs ten yard and in and the cornerback is drap
on him. And I thought to myself, that's the number
(07:39):
one play you want to run instead of instead of
running everybody deep and run a tank Dell across the middle.
My goodness, this guy just lost it. He cannot and
he hasn't done anything to help c J out look
(08:00):
struggling too. And there's a reason there was the person
giving up the sacks, right, I'm guessing they're probably the
worst and pressures as well.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
Yeah, they're at the lowest. They're they're at the bottom
of the league.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Yep. And you mean I think the deepest is a
top league given up touchdown.
Speaker 5 (08:15):
Passes and pressures and tackles for loss, Yeah, they're they're
near the top. Andy, let me let me explain to
you one thing. I get what you're saying on that one.
I don't know who went out and covered When you
call that I can tell you this in preparation when
you shift normally, and I wouldn't put u who was
it to shift it out?
Speaker 1 (08:33):
Again that you said what tight end wasn't Schultz? It
was over? Yes, Okay, here's the deal.
Speaker 5 (08:39):
And I can tell you this unequivocally that nine percent
of time is a guarantee. How you feel when a
guy like that shifts out. I don't know who was
on him. I'll go back and look, and I wasn't
pay attention if it was a corner, a linebacker of safety.
I can tell you this though, ninety nine percent of
the time, it won't be a corner. When you're tight
end or full back or somebody shifts out, you do.
(09:01):
If you're playing zone and not man, they just stay too.
If you're covered to it's to stay two. You're just
gonna play it, you know, to play it where it's
we're covered two. We're in zone, so it doesn't matter
who's there because you're in your own zone. If it's
man coverage, I assure you when I call it, i'd
put it in too, creating a mismatch. Thinking if I
see it all the time, a tight end or a
(09:21):
running back will shift outside. Well, you saw it with
the Texans reverse it. They put DeVante Adams in the
slot and they covered him with Jalen Petree. No, no, no,
you can't, you can't do They need to call time
out or adjust.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
That needs to be a corner.
Speaker 5 (09:41):
So when you went bought from Bobby Sloan, and I'm
not defending their lack of aggressiveness, but when Bobby Slowek
sends out Stover to stretch him out, if they're in man,
you know what they're looking for. That would be a
safety or a linebacker that walked out with him. You're
not going to cover Stover with a corner. You're wasting
your corner and man in zone, they're just gonna So
(10:01):
I don't know was it zone or man coverage. I'll
have to go back and look because if the if
the corner stayed there and there's two high safeties, If
the corner stayed there and nobody went out with Stover,
that tells me it's zone because normally when you call that,
you're anticipating if it's man, a linebacker safety to walk
(10:22):
out with that receiver. You want corners on receivers, not
safeties or linebackers. You want linebackers on tight ends or
h backs or fullbacks. So if it was zone, then
it wouldn't matter. If it's man, it's not gonna If
it's man, then that's a defensive mistake because you do
not want a corner covering a guy who's not real
(10:42):
big in your pass pro and you're throwing the football.
So I'm gonna go back. I'm gonna find it. And
if it's zone, then it wouldn't matter. They're trying to
figure out when they shift to go out there, who's
going out with him, because if a linebacker does go out,
you know what coverages man.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
Now you can still run it.
Speaker 5 (10:57):
So there's a there's a method of the madness that's
not I mean, you do that to find out on
the first play of the game. He said it was
the first play, right, Yeah, you do that to find
out what they're doing defensively on the first play. Yeah,
if the linebacker didn't go out with him, I'm here
to believe that it was zone. But Andy saw it
and I'll go back and check it out. So I
get why you full back ahe backer tight and you
(11:17):
flex them out there early to find out how are
they going to defend this rest of the game.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
It's not that you're plan on throwing it to Stover.
Speaker 5 (11:23):
You plan on working somebody else because you're hoping you've
got a mismatch elsewhere.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
Yeah, let's we'll continue this discussion, but first we got
to get to the stake out. Next on Sports Talk
