Madi Ay Won Cave and I'm pickingon the phone one of my I tell
you, I love this guy's music. Been a fan for years, Aaron
Watson. He's coming out to closeout Rodeo Austin this Saturday night. It's
been a pretty busy year for youso far, Aaron, hadn't it,
Man, it has been. It'sbeen a great year. You know.
I feel like, for the firsttime in about four or five years,

(00:21):
I'm running on all cylinders, youknow. I mean, things kind of
got squirrely with whatever happened four yearsago, and then you know, I
had issues with my vocal cords fora couple of years and had to have
surgery, and then there was apretty good amount of recovery time from that.
But man, I'm it's full steamahead. We've we just we're putting

(00:44):
the finishing touches on a new album. It's the best album I've ever made.
It's called Horse named Texas. Yeah, and it's it's I wrote the
whole album. And I'll tell youI'm in a better place than I've ever
been musically, because for me,it's it's not business anymore. It's personal,
you know. I tell people thislike the house is paid off.

(01:08):
I'm not stressing about those kind ofthings. Now I've got I've got three
teenagers and they're constantly watching me.And I'm sitting there telling them like,
hey, work hard, put yourput everything you got into it. You
can you can achieve anything you setyour mind to. And so now here
I am going, well, Ineed I need to show them, like

(01:33):
I need to show them that, like, hey, I want you to
watch your own man. He's beendoing this for twenty something years and he's
fixing to put out the best albumin all the country music and and and
then. And I know that soundsbold, but you don't if you're playing
sports, you don't start the seasonthinking I'd just like to come in third.

(01:53):
Ye you can live, like, let's let's go win the championship.
And you know, hey, ifI come in second, I'll go,
well, I gave it all Ihad. You know, So when is
the album coming out? When's itcoming out? Well, we're not sure.
We're still trying to get all ourducks in a row, but we're
gonna start probably putting out some singles, you know, in the fall.

(02:15):
I want to get it mixed andmastered. You know we're getting everything lined
up. You know, it's kindof like, you know, we're going
to be teasing it for a while. We want people to I almost want
the world to be agitated with mefor talking about this album. They can't
get a hold of. You wantto countdown clock that's what you want to
countdown clock on? I'll search youthat's that's right, that's right, and

(02:39):
then I'll just pray. Man.You know, there's been moments where I've
had these type of moments in mycareer where i I'm like, you know,
talking a big game, and thenthere are those moments where I'm like,
dear Lord, I hope this albumis as good as I think it
is. You know, yeah,I mean, you know your music,
you know where you are. Ithink you're perfect spot, and I love

(03:00):
the advice you give your kids. You have always had a great connection with
Austin, even from your debut albumworking with Ray Benson, having Willie Nelson
sing on that album and later onBilly Joe Shaver, You've always had that
Austin connection For a West Texas guy, you know, I've always I've always
loved the scene down there, youknow, I've always loved you know,

(03:21):
live music, you know, andI mean, you know, it's like
I've got so many, so manyof my dad's vinyl records. There's there's
live recordings in Austin. So youknow, for me, you know,
to get my first albums that Igot to record with Ray Benson for me,

(03:45):
you know, going down and recordingwith Ray, that that for me,
for a Texas boy, that thatwas like you hear a bunch of
these national artists about going and recordingsomething that's some legendaries owning studio that wasn't
my dream. And and you know, you know, it's so funny.

(04:06):
A lot of times you hear alot of these artists, mainstream artists,
they'll sing about the Broken Spoke.Well, I played the Broken Spoke.
I went to shows that the BrokenSpoke. I mean, you know,
I mean some of the best countrymusic shows I've ever seen were you know,
watching Dale Watson at the Broken Spoke. I mean it's just I just

(04:30):
always have loved that. That thatthe love for live music in Austin is
it's so fun and I just Ilove it. And you see there we
got them coming Saturday night close thatRodeo Austin Now I know there'll be a
few songs. At least I hopethese songs will be on your set list
that night. Uh raise your bottleabsolutely okay. And also the Cheyenne song

(04:55):
about Lane Frost. Oh yeah, yes, sir, do you line Chyenne?
You cannot that at a rodeo withoutsinging that song. You know,
I got to sing that song.We played the American Rodeo last week and
I don't know there was it wasa globels there in Arlington. I don't
know, there's about forty thousand peoplethere, and man, I was on

(05:16):
stage. It's funny. We wereopening for post Malone, but I informed
the crowd he was actually my afterparty. But I was on stage.
I was on stage with my oldestboy, Jake, he's in the band
when he's not playing baseball. AndI just looked at him. We were

(05:40):
singing July and Hyenne and he hadthe biggest smile on his face. And
I literally was looking around at likethirty five forty thousand people, and I
looked at my son and I went, oh, my gosh, this is
my favorite moment in my career righthere. And it was just because it
was with him and so man,I don't know. I think I'm at

(06:01):
a place where now I'm on stageand I look around, I look around
at the crowd and I can justreally like soak it in and go,
man, this is awesome, youknow. And so I don't know,
I'm pretty fired up for the future, and I'm excited to play the Austin
Rodeo. I loved Austin Rodeo. It's the perfect size. I mean,

(06:27):
it's just and you know what,I've played them all. I've played them
from Cheyenne to Calgary to you know, National Fools Rodeo, you know,
Houston, We've played them all.And I love playing the Austin Rodeo.
And if people don't know, theAustin Rodeo is name one of the ten
best rodeos in the world, whichI think was pretty cool. They brought
that up again last night. Now, a lot of people listen to us

(06:47):
outside of Austin, West Texas. If they miss you at the Austin Rodeo,
there is a benefit the next dayon Sunday, and this is a
very important benefit. So I wantyou to go ahead and and form our
listeners about it. Listeners live outaveling the Panhandle wad stuff like that.
What do you have? Yes,yes, sir. Well, Kevin Fowler
called me up and said, hey, Bud, we should do a benefit

(07:10):
concert in Amarillo and try to raisesome money, you know, to help
out some of these folks who havebeen affected by these West Texas fires.
And I said absolutely. So youknow me, Kevin Fowler, Randall King,
we're all, we're all Panhandle Boys. So we're going to do a
show at Amarillo on Sunday, Marchtwenty fourth, and all the proceeds are

(07:34):
going to go towards just helping outthose who have been affected by these fires.
And I've told people, I'm like, listen, these fires have called
millions and millions of dollars in damage, if not billions, right, right,
but every little bit helps. Soif you can't buy a ticket at
Panhandleboys dot com, you can makea donation at Panhandleboys dot com. So

(07:56):
you know, I'm very I'm verybiased. Uh when it comes to Texas.
You know, it's it's it's myhome state. It's it's the place
that has it's it's the place thathas supported me and my music and my
family. So you know, Ialways people thank me for doing this,
and I'm like, don't thank me. I'm I'm I'm just strumming a guitar,

(08:20):
you know. I mean, it'swhat a what an easy thing it
is for me to do to getup there and sing some songs and raise
money to help others. So Imean, but you realize, though you're
leaving Austin, you're going to tryto make it to amorl O by Mourning
for the show. You man,you know that's you know, I should
write a song about to Yeah, that's a that's a really nice title though,

(08:45):
Emerald by Morning. You know, but it might be a hit.
I don't know. I don't know. You think so, well, if
if if I could find the rightsinger for it, then we can make
it a hit. Hey, wecan only make it a number one hit.
That's a problem. Never hit awhile. But you know, I
hear Beyonce's putting out a country record, so maybe I'll text her jay Z

(09:07):
and see, you know, maybeI would love to hear that one.
I would love. We are lookingforward to seeing you in Austin, Stay.
We're looking forward to our neighbors upnorth, to seeing you and Kevin
and randall up with the Panhandle forthe big benefit right here. Hey,
you're so you're so good to us, and I'll tell you this. You'll
get a kick out of this.So I guess I kind of became legit

(09:30):
maybe, you know was the name. I became bonafide, according to my
wife, because Matthew McConaughey posted astory and he tagged me on it as
a picture of me and and JackieCrawford and uh, you know he's got
They've got their new pantalonas. Yeah, quila, So you know, so

(09:52):
you know, I guess I'm legitnow, you know. And oh,
I got to tell you, hey, boy, And I got one other
thing I gotta say. If I'vegot a parking ticket and unpaid parking tickets.
I took my daughter to a concerta couple of weeks ago, and

(10:16):
the parking situation was just ridiculous. They're outside of Moody, right, and
I'm a West Texas boy, Ilive out in the country. All those
cars freaked me out. So Iparked in one of the student parking and
you know, but here's the deal. They said to park where I was

(10:37):
supposed to park was forty bucks. And then you have to uber back and
forth, which they said probably anotherthirty bucks. Well, parking ticket was
only seventy five dollars and it wasa one or two minute low, so
I haven't paid that yet. SoI just if they're going to arrest me,
if they could wait after my show, the Universe, Texas Police Department,

(11:01):
if they could just let me perform, well the show, you know,
put in a word for me.I'm gonna tell you a secret.
You know, Matthew McConaughey is theMinister of Culture at UT So you want
to tag him and that and hecan take care of it for you.
Oh you know what, when Iget home, the tickets in my truck,
I'm gonna take a picture of thatand I'm going to tag Matthew and'll

(11:22):
be like, I need you totake care of this, Minister of Culture,
Minister of traffic tickets. Yeah,Minister of Culture needs to figure this
out for me. Oh, whata great visit with Aaron. We're going
to see him Friday. Yeah,of course, we're gonna see him Saturday
night. Saturday night pro rodeo andoften rodeo. I got to get in

(11:43):
touch with Matthew. Don't tell himabout that. Listen. Ain't time talking
at the Moody. Call me becauseI can help you out. Okay,
Well, I didn't realize what Iwas getting myself into. I just just
taking orders from my daughter. Whodid you see? By the way,
who'd you see? Oh? Gosh, ro Jo Olivia Rodriguez? Did you

(12:03):
enjoy the Moody? Isn't that agreat venue? Dude? It is?
It was so much fun. Ididn't know a song. I did not
know one song got girls saying, except for maybe like one that I've been
forced to listen to. But sheand I had so much fun. I
mean we I danced and acted likea fool and she didn't see. I

(12:26):
didn't seem to embarrass her, SoI guess that's a win. Well,
let me let me tell you something. Also, anytime next time you go
to a concert with the Moody,go by where they sell stubs sausage right
there, and whoever is playing themain stage that night, they spell out
their name and sausage. I'm notkidding that, I promise you it's true.
They spell sausage. Oh that's genius. So hey, that's that.

(12:48):
That is my new goal for mycareer. Play Moody so that stubbs can
spell out my name is sausage. There it is. You. Just just
let me know my next goal.Put that on your bucket list along.
We're taking care of that ticket. We'll take care of that right. That's
right. It's Aaron Watson. Gosee him Saturday night at Rodeo Austin,
