Speaker 1 (00:00):
Iba Madison in the morning.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
You joined in studio this morning by WKW Channel twenty
seven sports director Carl Winter.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
Carl, how you doing.
Speaker 3 (00:09):
Man, doing well? Doing well? On a good November Friday
for football and more.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
It is I'm looking.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
We got state semifinals for high school football starts tonight, right.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
Yes, indeed it starts and ends tonight. Still five local
schools alive, trying to book their tickets to Camp Randle
next time.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
I'm gonna guess, is Wanta Key one of them?
Speaker 3 (00:26):
Wanta Key is one of them?
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Madison Memorial, Oh good, good, guess they're good at basketball.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Not so much of.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Football this year, but a couple other powerhouses, the Columbuses,
the Darlington's of the world. So yes, some of some
of those schools that are always in it, they're still alive.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
So big news this year when it comes to the
championship games WKOW Channel twenty seven. You guys are put
them on the as we say on the radio side,
you're putting them on the big stick. You guys are
putting them on Right on WKOW Channel twenty seven, you
are going walled wall with coverage the WIAA Championship Games this.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
Year that's right. We call it the Dot one in TV.
So they're not going to be on the secondary channel,
They're on the main ABC feed. So that's exciting for
those high school student athletes that I'll get to be
on cable TV. And also, of course the games will
be streamed as well for anyone outside of our viewing area.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
I've got a guess, and it's not even hardly educated,
but it is a little educated that that stream during
the work day. There's got to be a billion offices
throughout the state that are watching that live stream of
those games. What a great way to put that out
there as well. I've got to ask you, you know,
you and I were talking just about about industry stuff
(01:39):
before we came on the air, about technology and other
things on the television side. We talk about having those
whether it's different apps. I know I've got Channel twenty seven.
I watch you guys up in my office, not over
the air, but I watch the news coverage online and
stream it online. That has to have become like a
great tool for you guys to find another way to
(02:00):
each people and really get important things, whether it's important
news or sports coverage and other things out to people.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
It's very helpful. And we have a wi A app
as well now, the w i A Live, so people
can see some sports coverage there if they want weather coverage.
We try to tailor it to people based on whatever
it is they're interested in, so when we're sending on
notifications and things like that. But the stream is certainly
helpful for people outside the viewing area who want to
be able to watch our newscasts. That it helps a lot.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
That's really and that's really cool.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Of course WKOW dot com you can get all the
information there a great place to start.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
With that big Monday night game.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
And if you guys had the Packers Eagles broadcast, and
if I would have told full and I think for
a lot of us that it was going to be
a close game and maybe the Packers came out on
the wrong side of it.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Before that game, if Packers fans would have would have
been surprised. I think, what's in and I'll let you
kind of dig into this, but I think what's been
frustrating with these last two losses is if your opponent
puts up ten, and whether it's sixteen the Panthers put up,
you should expect, and especially in Green Bay, you should
expect to win. If I were to say the Panthers
(03:11):
put up sixteen or the Eagles put up ten, what's
your prediction for tonight's game? And I can guarantee that
it's going to be ten and sixteen. I think everybody's going, Oh,
the Packers clearly are going to win this. What's going
on in Green Bay?
Speaker 3 (03:21):
Carl, Yeah, you would take that, right. Yeah, even the
one in the earlier earlier in the season the Browns
round now was the thirteen points to win it.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
The offense is.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
Just really dysfunctional right now. I think it starts with
the offensive line, and everyone kind of has their own
theories of what the problem is. Some might pin it
on Matt Lafleur's play calling, but I think the reality
is they're thinned offensive line, and they're thin in the
wide receiver room, and now they're thin in pass catchers
in general with Tucker Kraft out, so it really limits
what they're able to do. But it was certainly not
very imaginative play calling, and it was it was predictable
(03:53):
against Philadelphia. So the defense continues to look great. It
looks like a championship caliber defense, but they just have
not been able to finish drives or sustain drives on offense,
which is something in Green Bay. Obviously we've had you
think of the Super Bowl run. I had a great
defense there. But we always and of course with Aaron
Rodgers and even Jordan Love, we always think, like the offense,
(04:14):
it's always the defense that seems to if there's going
to be a problem in Green Bay, seems to be
the opposite.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
Right now, what's.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Strange but too strange about this season is with that tie.
I mean again going back to if your opponents are
putting up thirteen sixteen to ten. Conversely, if you say,
well the Packers are going to put up forty points,
of course they're going to win.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
It has been a bizarre season.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Does some of that just and I know we're the
youngest team in football, does some of that play into
some of these kind of wild swings as far as
as far as how the games are turning out? Is
that could that be part of a contributing factor to
some of these outcomes.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
With the consistency? I think it could be. I mean,
you're asking some of the Savion Williams and Matthew Golden
and these guys to contribute quite a bit, and they're
just not weak to week contributors yet, So I think
that has something to do with it, but I think
it more has to do with the injuries and the
personnel on offense as well. But it is such a strange,
(05:14):
like week to week were dropping forty points on somebody
and then only dropping seven. It's strange. I think this
week with New York could be a get right game,
but they need it to be a get right game.
At this point, you're five to three and one and
trailing two teams near division. So the tie is strange
because it's better than a loss, but when you're five
three and one compared to six and three to two teams,
(05:37):
it's worse than a win.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
And we look to what we we go to Giants
play the Giants on Sunday. Of course, you get that
right here at thirteen ten WIBA, and then it's a
bunch of divisional It's it's the Vikings, the Lions on
Thanksgiving and then the Bears. A lot can be you know,
we go from sitting here, I'll I don't know how
the rules are for sports directors. If you guys are
(05:58):
allowed to give your allegiance. I'm a huge Packer fan.
It's quite the only as far as like sports that
make me happy win or lose, or depressed Packers football,
so anything it really has in effect. I mean, I
look at where we're sitting today, and then I look
of like where we could be after that December seventh game.
If the Packers can win three out of these four
upcoming games, I almost feel as a fan like, we're going,
(06:21):
why were we freaking out back there in early November.
We're We're sitting pretty especially if three out of those
four of those three divisional games, We've been a great
spot at that.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Point, right there's plenty of time to write the ship.
And then they play Chicago again two weeks after, so
twice in three weeks Packers Bears. But so there is
still that. But I don't think anyone feels confident about
beating the Lions right now because that Week one game
feels like a decade ago with how well the Packers
played that week, and then they went out and played
(06:50):
well the following week as well, but it just seems
far removed from there. But of course the Packers, I'm
sure still feel good about beating the Vikings and beating
the Bears. They and beating the Giants this week, who
are now injury depleted, so they have the time. They
have time, you've got to get it right.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
One final thing on Packers football. You mentioned Matthew Golden
rookie season. Clearly, I think, as you know, we've been
begging for years for the Packers to draft a wide receiver.
We get our guy. I think some of us are,
and not to say that he's not going to be
and he clearly has the skill set, He clearly has
(07:25):
the talent, maybe not as productive as we'd like to see,
but I think it is kind of a reminder that drafting,
there's no sure things in the NFL draft, there are
no sure things in sportspirit, especially the NFL with young people.
Matthew Golden shows a lot of promise. But I do think,
and I'll ask for your take on that, is he
somebody that still has yet to kind of live up,
(07:46):
to live up to kind of his cape billion expectations
for this team.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
I think so. I mean, he had he doesn't even
have a touchdown catch yet, so you wouldn't expect that
going into week What are we week eleven now? So
they do want to continue to get him going, and
I think that's going to start with finding him over
the middle or finding shorter stuff. Because now the Christian
Watson's back, he's the guy that you're going to kind
of bet on to take the top off the defense,
So you don't necessarily need Golden to be that, even
(08:11):
though you'd want him to be that. So I think
at this point they just need to get him going
and get hit that rapport with Jordan Love going, because
it certainly has been a slow start for him and
he was injured last week. I think he'll be back
this week.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
I will stick with talking pigskin, but we'll switch to
the college side and big win last week for the Badgers,
a huge challenge though tomorrow Indiana is going back to
I don't follow college football as closely as but if
you would have told me that Indiana would be the
number two team in the nation in mid November, I
(08:45):
would have called you a liar and I would have asked,
are you talking about basketball? Are you talking about football?
But Indiana is the real deal, aren't they?
Speaker 1 (08:51):
They are.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
It's just such so strange to think of this a
couple of years ago, where Indiana was a football program,
but they are absolutely the real deal. I think they're
gonna have a little bit of extra juice because they
nearly got beat last week against Ben's State, so that
they're going to be ready to go, and they're they're
they've been playing good football all season. So it's a
tall task for the Badgers. I don't know that anybody
(09:12):
is going in expecting a win when they're thirty plus
point underdogs. Yeah, so it's going to be difficult. But
the Badgers, they've got to feel somewhat good about themselves
uttering out their first Big ten win.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
I've known it does feel. You mentioned kind of feeling
better about themselves. Things I have noticed like a different attitude,
a different swagger. Even obviously coming off a win, of
course over over a nationally ranked team, you're gonna feel good.
But like coach Fickle and that postgame press conference, I've
always one of the things I respect about him is
he does seem to be pretty candid, Like he does
(09:43):
seem to be willing to kind of share his emotions
and his feelings and sometimes be brutally honest on things.
I liked that press conference. He showed a little bit
of like you're like for people that are wondering, like
why did they bring this guy in? He kind of
saw a little bit after that, like this is a
guy who clearly knows the secret to success. He just
(10:03):
hasn't had maybe as many opportunities to share his perspective
after wins as he did this past weekend.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
Right, And when you're struggling, like the way the Badgers
were with six straight losses, you start to question of
whether the coach has lost a locker room or whether
they've quit on each other. I don't think that was
ever the case, and I think that that goes a
long way for Luke Fickle. The players clearly. I mean
you could see them, the coaches and players embracing him
on the sideline in the locker room after the game.
(10:30):
They were happy for him and vice versa, and I
think the vibes were high after a win in the
snow against Washington. Doesn't mean they're going to win this
week though, No, it does.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
No, We'll definitely As a as a as a kind
of a gentle fan, I just hope that we don't
get embarrassed. And if they can be competitive, it should
be good. Speaking of competitive, Holy Molly on the ice,
both the men and the women are doing phenomenal. We're
going to talk with Carl about that and so much more.
Of course, Carl Winter sports directs sports director w KOW
(11:00):
Channel twenty seven. Don't forget with the high school WIAA playoffs,
those Division one, those championship games, they will be right
on WKOW channel twenty seven. Definitely going to want to
kind of tune in for those because that's going to
be really exciting stuff. We'll continue our conversation with Carl.
We will do that next as Madison Morning continues right
here thirteen ten WUIBA thirteen ten WIBA talking this morning
(11:24):
with Carl Winder WKOW Channel twenty seven Sports director.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
Carl, we really.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
Got into football that last last segment, and I feel
kind of bad because I'll get a lot of time
to talk about Badger hockey. But we've got men and
women playing today. The men are on thirteen ten wibaight tonight,
women are over on ten seventy of the game.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
I mean, Wisconsin. When it comes to what.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
Sport do we deserve to excel at, hockey is definitely
one of them.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
Isn't it It is?
Speaker 3 (11:49):
And you're right, what a start. I mean, you couldn't
draw it up much better. For the men's and women's team,
the men have skyrocketed up the national rankings from twentieth
to seventh, and I don't know that anyone will to
respect it that the women doing what's or what wisco's
women's hobey does. They They did drop a game, but
still eleven and one. They've got Saint Plott State tonight.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Yeah, you mentioned they dropped a game, And what's funny
about that? It's like, one, you always expect them to win,
but yeah, you also expect to shut out, which is
also like it's it's so weird to think that it's
like a rarity when they're scored on, and it's especially
a rarity if they lose one. So a great season
and all that stuff. One more time. Remind folks, of
course WIAA championship that all those division games right on
(12:31):
twenty seven, won't they be?
Speaker 1 (12:32):
They are? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (12:32):
Well, high school state football championships next Thursday and Friday,
pretty much all day on wkown streaming as well and
the wia Sports Live app. So very exciting for high
school football fans.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
You're going to want to tune into that.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
As always, of course, tune into WKW channel twenty seven
get all your updates there with Carl. Carl, thank you
so much for joining us this morning, have great weekend.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
