Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey thirty four thirteen ten WIBA and your twenty seven
storm track forecast from Meteorologies Dana Folton. Sunny today, a
high a fifty three tonight partly Claudia low thirty three
currently thirty with clear skies Here at thirteen ten WIBA
joining us in studio this morning. Sports director from WKOW
Channel twenty seven, Carl Winter. Carl, how you doing this morning?
Speaker 2 (00:18):
I'm doing well. Shown It's a beautiful crisp fall Friday firs.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
Some football, it is things as well.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
You got it. There's so much going on. You mentioned football.
We'll talk obviously about the Badgers Packers, but first Friday night,
we know what that means. And we are into playoff season,
aren't we.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
We are level one, so yeah, we've reached the point
of the season where for the seniors, especially ever, every
week on the field could be their last, so they're
playing for their football lives here and lots of good matchups,
lots of teams in the area in action around the
state as well.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Some are having to travel outside the market as well.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
And you guys do a really good job at twenty
seven of breaking down those games and keeping people updated.
I know it's a lot of ground to cover, and
I'm going to guess you've got quite quite the team
working in the background to put that stuff all together.
But doing that complete picture, that's that's a challenge, and
I don't know that people fully appreciate as great as
(01:12):
you know, as wi A and other things other organizations are.
There's a lot of work that goes into kind of
compiling those breakdowns of each of those games, isn't.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
There There is?
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Logistically, it's a challenge every week just geographically trying to
get to as many games as we can make sure
as many kids can get on TV. But we thankfully
we have some partners around the state as well, so
some of those games where our teams here from Madison
are playing in the Milwaukee area this weekend, or in
the Wassai area or whatever it might be over on
the western part of the state, we'll still be able
to get some of those games on the air. So
(01:43):
we uh yeah, there's lots of moving parts behind the
scenes just to make sure that that everybody gets a
chance to see themselves on TV.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Hopefully that should be it should and it should be
some good coverage. I mean, I cover Ederton. I think
they're at Lake Million.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Yes, so that's one of the few games where we
actually have two teams that are in the market playing
each other. So that should be a great game though.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
I we're excited. We will be out there for sure.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
Oh, that'll be fantastic to see. And then now working
our way through football tomorrow, got the Badgers not in
our area. They are out in Oregon. And how do
I say it, I've got to obviously we'll hear the
game right here at thirteen ten Wuiba. The Badger's football
story is about as compelling off the field as it is.
If that, if that's a good way to put it.
(02:24):
What have you seen? I mean for you like kind
of looking at where the Badgers are right now, looking
at their history, how do you kind of assess things?
Speaker 2 (02:32):
It's a challenge definitely there right now. The players are
you know, when you're having the season the Badgers are having,
the questions start creeping in of haws the locker room,
quit on the coach, or has the coach quit in
the locker room or vice versa, or have they quit
on each other? That does not seem to have happened.
The players are still very much behind Luke fickle and
vice versa, but it certainly is. When you're having to
(02:54):
have these conversations every week, it seems like a broken
record of you know, how do you continue to have
hope when you can't score points and things like that.
It's it's very challenging, but the locker room again continues
to rally around each other. But you're also reaching a
point where, you mentioned off the field, you're losing recruits
or you're worried about whether recruits are going to continue
(03:16):
to come into the program.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
So it's a difficult place to be. It seems like the.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
You know, the athletic department is dead set on not
making a coaching change in the middle of the season,
so at least that question appears to be answered right now.
But now it's just a question of can you win
another game the rest of the season.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
And certainly, you know, miracles can happen, and certainly a
win out West at Oregon would be a huge, huge
boost for this team and for fans. And I'm not
a sports guy by any means, but I know that
football's gotten much more complicated with in all college sports,
nil and all that. You know, the recruiting was always
(03:53):
always a complicated, tough thing, very strategic thing. But with
all these additions to you know, to players and motivations
and you know, portals and other things, it could be
a real challenge putting together a really solid team. But
it also can turn really quickly. Whereas you know, one
season you may be down, the next season, through some
(04:15):
really strategic moves, you can be on top of the world.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Well, look at Indiana exactly.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
I was going to bring up Indiana, I mean, kurtz Signetti,
I mean the Wisconsin Indiana unfortunately have almost flipped their
positioning into Big Ten. And as far as who's the
you know, the team that's perennially at the top and
now unfortunately the Badger's at the bottom.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
And I think that's unfortunately.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Also one of the biggest indictments of Luke Fikel right
now is that he's been here for this is his
third season, and that it has not turned around.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
But like you said, if you bring.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
In the right coach who maybe brings some players with
or is just a very good recruiter, things can change.
Or you know, the athletic department is saying that if
we just invest more, we can turn this thing around.
So you know, some may complain in college football that
the teams of the most money, you know, the Oregans
who has the Phil Knight Nike money behind them, can
crush it. But then you also look at Indiana, it's like, well,
(05:07):
if you simply invest and get the right coach, maybe
there is actually more parody now. So there are a
few ways of looking at it.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
And we've got a phenomenal campus, great great team support.
Obviously things have been a little different. I think people
are not upset obviously with the players, but with kind
of what's going on. So it's a great environment. Yeah,
who knows what this weekend will bring, and again hoping
for the best. And speaking of this weekend, a familiar
face will be on our television sets wearing different uniform.
(05:36):
That's always painful. Part of me wishes this game we're
in Green Bay. I think probably the NFL wishes were
at Green Bay as well. Packers Steelers. What I always
love when people try to write off Aaron Rodgers and
the last two years. Obviously the injury with the Jets
and then not a great return. But the people that
(05:56):
were kind of talking about him being watched, I don't
think they know Aaron Rodgers obviously is proving this season
he is still elite, isn't.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
He He is.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
He's having a renaissance here and some throws that he
you know, he looks like vintage Rodgers and he's taking
care of the ball.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
He's i think fourth in the league in.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Touchdowns, so he's and the Steelers system is seems like
it's complementing him well as well.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
So it's, you know, gonna be a hard guy to beat.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah, on the road for the Packers, and I agree,
I think most people would like to see him make
a return to Lambau at some point. I think he will,
but whether it's you know, actually playing or not, we'll see.
But yeah, he seemed almost reflective this week, you know,
looking back on his time in Green Bay, and I
think that that relationship has healed in this past like
two and a half years or so since he was traded.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
It's interesting just contrasting Brett fav and Aaron Rodgers and
their their time after the Packers. I think it shows,
you know, they're both they're very unique, very complex and individuals,
and I think it shows kind of the different approaches
because I feel like, yeah, you mentioned Aaron, he almost
seems very reflective and very where it's like Far seemed
(07:04):
very angry, very again. I don't blame either of them.
I get how this stuff happens, but it's just interesting
seeing the contrasting approaches and feelings following following a separation
like that.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
Right, it took Far for a lot longer to come
back and visit Green Bay again. Versus Rogers said that
he was going to retire a packer, So we'll see,
you know exactly what that looks like. But again, it
should be a great one Sunday night football. You know,
it doesn't get much better than.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
That, sure does. And and of course can hear that
game right here on thirteen ten Wiba speaking of things
to here on thirteen ten Wiba and things that have
gotten more complex. Men's basketball and the Badgers have an
exhibition game tonight against Oklahoma. They're playing in Milwaukee at
the Pfizer Head Coach Garden last week and I was
just talking to him off the show just about what
(07:51):
it's like in the world of you know, we talked
about some of the complexities of that. I'm like, I'm like,
I said to him, I said, boy, you've got to
be getting really busy right now as things getting ready
for the season, He's like, you know what, He's like,
things have changed. He's like, I crave for the start
of the season because there's there's normalty, there's a routine.
He's like off season, he's like, you're working and you're going,
(08:13):
and it's it's all these coaches for folks that don't
know they're going year round. It's not some kind of
you know, seasons done, I'm done. They go, don't they right.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Recruiting is such a big part of the job now
and Coach Guard has done a great job of it.
But it's a different world. Rather than you know, trying
to woo high schoolers. The best high school is seventeen
eighteen year olds in the country. You're now trying to
get transfer portal pieces that fit your roster. I think
Coach Guard has talked about this quite a bit, like
you're not just looking for the best available players, You're
(08:42):
trying to find guys that fit your system. And I
think he's done a nice job of that this offseason.
I don't want to get too far ahead of myself
because they have not played a game yet, but people
are excited.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
About this team. I'm excited about this team.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
So the Badger's starting the year right to the top
twenty five. Not the preseason rankings mean much, but we'll
get our first glimpse of them against a different team
to I got Oklahoma.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
That's gonna be exciting. And the buzz is definitely there.
And I had heard and I and I don't even
know if you've had a chance to did I see
this that that they're gonna now start allowing G League
players with eligibility? Do you know anything about this? Can
does this make? And we talk about some complexities right
now it's for college basketball. Now you've got got another
(09:24):
And I also realized I learned G League players not
to laugh, but they only make like forty thousand dollars
a year on average, whereas like college players are making
more than G League players. What do we what's going
on there? Carl, Yeah, it's strange.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
It seems like some some college programs are recruiting guys
that are in the G League and apparently still have
NCAA eligibility. So I don't know the NCUBA has made
a final decision yet, but it seems like this is
going to be allowed, which seems like it goes against
every you know, amateurism rule that we used to have
in college basketball and even some Big Ten coaches.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
I was I was watching an interview with produced Matt Page.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
The other day and he was like, I had no
idea this was a possibility. So unfortunately it might open
a whole new can of worms. And it's another thing
that you want to see. I would like to see
the NCAA act on quickly. And then yeah, then if
you're recruiting guys that have already played professionally, it seems
like there should be in my opinion, there should be
one router or the other year.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
You can play college basketball.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
You played professional basketball, and as much as we professionalize
college basketball, you.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
Can't do both right now, maybe you can do both.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
It'll be interesting to see. And I know you've got
a lot of you as we talked about, you've got
a busy weekend this weekend and every weekend through through
about April May, so for sure take it. Friendly, Carl,
thank you so much for taking the time. Anything anything
big he got coming up side obviously from the sports
anything we want to want to definitely be paying touch
on both hockey teams or an action this again as well,
(10:48):
so's loots and to see with Badger hockey.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
The men play Alaska at the Cole Center tonight, so
lots of Badgers this weekend if if you're interested.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
The hockey team will be over on ten seventy the
game both men and women's this weekend, so you want
to tune in for that. Carl Winter WKW Channel twenty
seven Sports director, Carl, thank you so much for your time.
You have a great day.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
Thanks.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Don Brewer, of you know Don Brewer. You know exactly
who Don Brewer is. He will be joining us next
right here on thirteen ten WIBA
