Speaker 1 (00:05):
Thirteen ten, Wiba Madison In the morning, Sean along with
Katie in a familiar voice, joining us this morning one
only Brian Ziegler with bad Runner Fly chairperson, Brian, how
you doing this morning?
Speaker 2 (00:16):
I'm doing really great. I can't put you know, yeah,
in a bad position with all those nice weather we're
having you.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
Yeah, you got really lucky with this with kind of
this the weather, the way that it's been holding up. Now,
correct me if I'm wrong. And Katie, you had your
recent flight. You guys did have some right, didn't you, Katie?
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Yes, we did later half of the day and it
was very hot.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Yes, so this stuff, this weather's probably little nicer. The
cool thing too, Brian, is you guys with the Badge
Runner flight. You guys are prepared for everything, aren't you.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Yes, we are, and Katie will attest we had honchos
that we broke out numerous times, along with umbrellas.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
Yeah, I bet, and I guess it's probably the probably
the military background and and very prepared for these type
of things. You guys have an upcoming flight coming up
October eleventh, so it's just a few days from now.
Let's talk about that flight and future flight says, well,
I know last time we talked, the big push for
you was to make sure that that veterans became aware
(01:17):
of the opportunity. You really want to get those get
those flights filled, don't you, Brian.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Yes, we do. We are actively working on twenty six
plans right now and we are looking to get more
veterans signed up for our flights next year.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
How does that how does that process work? What's what's
the best way for veterans to do that?
Speaker 2 (01:37):
The easiest way is to go to our website bedgrounniflight
dot org or the applications page. A couple of routes
you can do still the one online or you could
print off a PDF copy, fill it out and then
mail it into us. And if anybody else just needs assistance,
will be more than give us a call, email us.
(01:58):
We'll be more and glad to help you out with
one of our volunteers. We want to glad to do that.
You know what, we also go ahead?
Speaker 1 (02:05):
Oh, I was going to say, I was going to say.
One of the things that that's really impressive about your
organization is you guys really do everything to make sure
that that vets are able to do this stuff, bending
over backwards, going through extreme lengths to make sure that
that they're able to do that, And I just wanted
to I want to highlight that. What were you going
to say there, Brian.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Yes, because we also are being very active out there.
We've had a lot of great response to the request
that gone out. We're setting up a lot of information
boosts at at festivals, or we've got car shows that
we've been studying up. So those are really great opportunities
(02:46):
for us to meet veterans, their families, get veterans signed up,
listen to stories of veterans who have gone on a flight.
Oh if anybody you know, those are other opportunities for
veterans to get signed up.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
So again, a lot of opportunities out there. Mentioned the
website your Honor Flight dot org. That's bad your Honor
Flight dot orgon one of the great things too that
comes of this. Obviously, most of the time the volunteers
and the and the and the guardians are our family members.
Sometimes they're not. They're not necessarily either. They're just folks
(03:17):
that are that are along to help and and able
to do that. Katie, you had that opportunity and one
of the cool things that comes out of this is
is kind of getting to know a vet, getting getting
a perspective that you may not have had. And I know,
take Katie on your flight, You and your veteran had
a really good time, and really you had a great
opportunity to learn a little bit, didn't you.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
I did. Yeah, So I I had never met him
before the day of the flight. We just had a
phone conversation a few days before, and then Yeah, went
in and met him that morning. Bill and I just
I knew from the first second that I sat down
next to him that we were gonna have a really
good time together that day. We definitely clicked. He was super,
super sweet. I saw parts of both of my grandpa's
(03:59):
in him, lots of similarities. Like one of my grandfathers
was in the Air Force. That's where he did most
of his time. He knew everything there was to know
about airplanes, so he was teaching me things all day.
It was really really great time. And he hadn't been
to DC since the sixties. I think he'd only been
one time, as he said, in the sixties, and I've
(04:21):
been four or five times, and so it was kind
of it worked out well that I could really try
to take the time to show him everything he really
wanted to see and not have to worry about myself
as much because it was a little more been there,
done that for me. But I really got to just
make the day all about him and what he wanted
to see and going at his pace and things like that.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
And Brian, that's really part of when it comes to
badge your honor flight, something you guys really work hard
to do, isn't it.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Yes, we do. And Katie, you did a great job
that day. Thank you for remembering everything that we taught
you in training. But yes, the day is all about
the veteran and is their experience. I'm jealous of the
stories you got to listen with Bill there so that
I get some of those stories. But for you to
(05:08):
have that intimate setting with him at any time, Yeah,
we we. It's all about the veterans and what it
means to them every veteran. We've talked about this in
the past, sean is no veteran experience is the same,
and that's what's unique about the program.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
Well, I want to ask you to Brian, as we
talked this morning with Brian Ziegeler with Badger Honor Flight.
What about volunteers for the events themselves, obviously the send
off the return. I know you there's a ton of
work you mentioned going out into the communities and getting
folks signed up. That requires a lot of a lot
of leg power, a lot of leg work, a lot
of a lot of bodies, And I know you guys
(05:50):
look for volunteers as well, and that's something that for
folks that are interested maybe sharing experience or or really
helping get the word out. You guys have some great
up tunities for folks as well, don't you.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
Yes, we do. We have. As you mentioned, the stend
Off Welcome Home are two great opportunities for veterans to
get signed up. We've talked about working at our helping
trying to raise fun and Badger on a flight awareness
before Badger football teams manning these information tables, but we
also need folks to help with all the administrative work,
(06:24):
and we're actually looking to One of our board members
is stepping away at the end of the year, so
we're actually if anybody wants to become a part of
the board, we have an opening there as well.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
Oh, that is fantastic. All the details available Badger Honor
flight dot org. That's Badger Honor flight dot org. Before
we conclude this morning, Brian, I did want to ask
about fundraising in general. And one of the things that
I think is really really great that you guys do
is there's a lot of different opportunities for putting, whether
(06:56):
it's sponsoring a specifics part of the whether it's the
lunches or other things. You guys really have a number
of opportunities sponsorship opportunities for folks or businesses that are
so inclined, don't you.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Yes, we do. We have everything from sponsoring the snacks
on the trip or sponsoring the lunch the dinners. One
that I really want to call out is that this
next flight, as we talked, last flight was sponsored by Copies.
This next one is the group out of stock Prairie
called Here's for Honor. This will be the fourth flight
(07:30):
that they will have their flight, their name on a
flight sponsorship. They have raised half a million dollars plus
in the stock Prairie community in the past ten years
for us.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
That is incredible, That is amazing. That is great to hear.
And do you get as we talk about groups that
kind of come together, whether maybe it's office office team
or other things. Do you get individuals or groups that
kind of get together on their own and say, we're
going to put together a fundraiser. Maybe it's a a
weekend event or something like that where they kind of
(08:03):
pool stuff together to donate.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
Too bad Your on a Flight, Yes, I do, and
that is actually really starting to increase for us, which
is great because it's toothful raises funds for us, but
more importantly brings awareness to our program and exposes us
and we get better and signed up and we raise
a little bit of money. That's a win win for both.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
It's such a fantastic organization, great day to day. If
you are in the position to make a monetary donation,
maybe you're looking to do a little fundraising, maybe you'd
like to volunteer, maybe you've got some experience helping with organizations.
They've got an opportunity on their board as well. You
can learn more online the website for Badgeer on a Flight.
It's just that Badger Honor Flight all one word Badger
(08:44):
Honorflight dot org. All that information online and Brian, I
know you guys have a flight coming up on the eleventh,
should be perfect weather. Should be a great, great trip.
Look forward to seeing all the pictures, all the smiling
faces and hearing some of those stories as well. Brian
Ziggler with Badger on a Flight, Thank you for all
the work and you have a great day. Thank you, Sean,
