Speaker 1 (00:01):
Eight forty eight thirteen ten Wyba and Madison in the morning.
Oh yes, thinking about the beautiful ballpark and one of
the really cool things about Warner Park. And since the
Mallards have been in town for a very very long time,
there's never a dull time. There's never a downtime on
Madison's North side as a matter of fact, coming up

(00:23):
this weekend tomorrow, as a matter of fact, at the
Warner Park Duck Pond got the True North Festival, music, food,
all sorts of great stuff. That's tomorrow at the Warner
Park right at the Duck Pond there and joining us
with the Madison Mallard mister Vernstenman, Vern, how you.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Been man, Good morning, doing great.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
Let's talk about this True North Fest a little bit.
For folks that don't know, this is a chance to
head on out to the ballpark and do a couple
of our favorite things, which is eat, drink and listen
to music. Am I right on that?

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Right on, right on? You know, there's there's been so
many cool things happening on the North side of Madison
in the last few years. You know, I've been working
on the side of town for twenty five years now
and you know, ten to fifteen years ago, I think
the North Side you know, had a lot of opportunity
to improve, I guess right, And and and you didn't
see new restaurants and new bars and things like that

(01:21):
coming to this part of town. And now you know,
some of the coolest you know, new bars and restaurants
and apartments and things like that are all coming to
the North Side. You know, there's a big turnover, and
kind of even the people living in the houses here,
you know, like people you know, rebuilding and improving the
houses that are here. It's becoming kind of a younger,

(01:43):
cooler part of town than I think it's ever been
since I've been here, at least, And so we wanted
to celebrate that. So I got together with Matt Grding
from Lola's. You know, this outstanding cocktail bar on the
north side of Madison. If you haven't been to it yet,
you got to stop in. It's got kind of a
great stuffer club and you know, soul club vibe going
on with outstanding music and food and things like that.

(02:04):
And we got together and said, what can we do
to celebrate all the great things happening on the north
side of Madison? And tell the story a little bit.
And so we landed on the True North Food and
Music Festival. That will be the first ever one will
be tomorrow, Kates open at three o'clock. We have twelve
restaurants that we'll be selling you know, kind of small
plate samples, but also some entree dishes as well, places

(02:27):
like Lola's and Heritage Cavern in a Han and Seven
Acre Dairy, Salvator's Pizza, and it's going to be outstanding,
you know. I mean, the food alone would be worth
coming for, but we're also adding, you know, great music.
We'll have Kates opening at three, live music starting at

(02:47):
four o'clock with local bands kind of headlined. The local
band portion at least is headlined by the People Brother's band,
Mom and Dick Donald's Brass Band. And then we're bringing
in this guy by the name of Pochi Lfarge. If
you ever happened to see Boardwalk Empire, he was actually
in Boardwalk Empire and had some of his music featured
in that show, and he kind of evokes this kind

(03:09):
of like speakeasy vibe from like the twenties and thirties,
and he's outstanding and he'll be a lot of fun
to see as our headliner on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Night should be a whole lot of fun. Of course,
you head on over to True Northfest dot com. That's
True Northfest dot com all one word by tickets online.
You can also get a rundown of the different music
and different foods available. I know I'm biased. I do
see beef butter barbecue there. I also see you guys
got a fantastic about him. And it's interesting too when

(03:40):
you talk about the North Side, and I know one
of the things that the Mallards have always prided themselves on,
and what you guys have always talked about was how
much you are committed not just to Madison but even
specifically to the community. And it seems like a lot
of the changes that have gone on for the better
on the North Side really do and and Vern, I

(04:00):
think you guys deserve a lot of credit for this.
It really does does base itself around Warner Park and
what you guys have been doing with the Mallards, you've
suddenly and as well as the Nightmares is that was
an area that you know, a lot of other other
organizations that tried to make something happen. You guys worked
really really hard to make it happen at Warner Park,

(04:21):
and it's become a place where, you know, not only
is it is it a great event the baseball and
softball games, there's a lot of people that are now
coming that way. And if you're if you're looking to
start a new business, if you're looking to open up
a restaurant or a bar, or any other type of
type of thing, you've got these this influx of people.
On any baseball or softball day, You've suddenly got an

(04:44):
influx of customers. And it's kind of like a little
engine that once you guys fired that up, it's really
been taking off up there. I know you're very proud
of the neighborhood, as you guys should be. It's pretty
cool what's going on the North Side.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
Absolutely, and I mean, how nice is it if you
live on the North Side you could hop on your
bike or walk over to a Mallard's game or to
a Nightmares game. And now adding in some of these
kind of community events and festivals. We're going to be
doing a trick or treat event with a screening of
a movie before Halloween here in a couple of weeks.
And yeah, I think that we've always kind of felt

(05:19):
like if we're making Madison a little bit better place
to live, like we're doing our job and that the
business side we'll kind of figure itself out, and that,
you know, is what we've always tried to do with
the Mallards, and I think what we're doing now is
true North and some of these other things. Another funny
event we have coming up in a couple of weeks
is we're returning Division one baseball to Madison for the

(05:39):
first time since nineteen ninety three and the University of
Wisconsin Milwaukee we'll be playing a baseball game here against
Illinois State, and it will be the first time we'll
have Division one baseball here since the UW you know,
baseball program left unfortunately. And that'll be on October eleventh,

(06:00):
on a Saturday afternoon. And for those that are big
baseball fans, that'll be a funny event to see and uh,
you know, kind of bring bring to you one baseball
back here to Madison and kind of bring that topic
back up for conversation is always a fun thing for
us as well.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
Will you're will your announcer be saying, and the University
of Wisconsin Milwaukee team takes the fan.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
I wanted to. I wanted to buy UW Milwaukee like
some nice red uniform conson on the front of them,
but they're they're athletic. Director didn't think that was as
good of an idea as I did.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Different perspectives, But that is who how did that come
to be? Like? Because to me, that's it's brilliant all around.
It's it's so good. Obviously for Madison, it's also great.
I got a guess for the players of from UW Milwaukee,
how did that all come about? Burn?

Speaker 2 (06:51):
You know, I've been friends with those coaches for a
long time. Actually, the coach at e W Milwaukee, Sean Wagner,
played for the Mallards in the late two thousands, and
you know, fall baseball has become a bigger and bigger
thing in college baseball in the last five or ten years,
I would say, and they saw this as an opportunity
to do something kind of fun for their players where
they get away from the normal grind of campus life

(07:14):
and all the things that they're doing. And I think
they see the Mallards as kind of a fun place
to come to. I think the teams are going to
go up to the dells after the game and get
the water parks and things like that. So I think
it's a fun thing for them. It's a fun thing
for us and for Madison Baseball you know fans. So
I think it's kind of a win win for everybody.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
That is an amazing thing that's gonna be going on
October eleventh. Of course, details, I'm gonna guess Mallards Baseball
dot com you guys have probably got all the details
on that up there and True North True Northfest dot com.

We will have some merchandise available and uh, you know
we're we're gonna have a ferris wheel in the outfield.
The Mallard's Kids Zone is going to be open. Uh
you know, I think it's going to be mostly adulty event.
But it's absolutely something that we kind of built to

(08:22):
be attractive to kids and families as well, and so
hopefully something for everybody at the event. And uh, it
should be just a ton of fun.

Mallards and of course going on at Warner Park at
the Duck Pond. Follow him on Facebook and social media
