Eight oh five thirteen ten wib A Madison in the
morning and ask the experts. Hanging out this morning with
Andrew Larson. Of course, Andrew comes to us from Larsen
Home Services. The website Larsenhome Services dot com. That's l

Speaker 2 (00:15):
S O N Home.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Services dot com, delv whatever six so eight five three
five forty three forty three. That's five three five forty
three forty three for Larsen Home Services. And now that
we are through the political season, we're done talking about
all that hot air. We're gonna talk a little bit
about cold air with Andrew. Andrew, how are you doing
this morning?

Speaker 2 (00:33):
We're gonna talk about hot air too.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Oh oh well, I guess probably can't talk without the other,
can you.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
No? I was all focused.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
I was dialed in, like this is what I'm gonna
talk about, and that music comes on, and now I'm
like tapping my pen. Your you know, your choice of
leading music is just thanks what I was looking forward to.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
Well, I do what I do my part, you know,
and it's trying, you know, kind of match the energy,
and you know, there's always you. You've always got such
great stuff to talk about. And Andrew as I'm taking
a look around out the windows and other things. I'm
seeing the leaves are off the trees, and I know
we're kind of in that period of transition and the

(01:11):
equipment known as a furnace is about to get a
workout for the next few months. Let's talk about the
important role that that insulation makes when it comes to
you out things like unwanted airflow, hot, cold, coming going,
those type of things. You guys really attack this stuff
at large stome services, don't you.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
We do.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
And I'd like to add that I am a furnace holdout.
Still Are you serious? Oh, I'm still holding out.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
You know. All the wife's like it's kind of cold
in here.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
I'm like, you know what, start the fireplace, you know.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
Just you don't need to heat the whole house. It's
not that bad. We'll be fine. You know.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
There's like a month or so you get every year
where you don't have air and you don't have.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Heat, and it's wonderful. Yes, and I'm.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
Still holding out, but I'm gonna lose pretty soon here.
But yes, it is that time of year the furnaces.
It's why I said we're gonna start talking. We're gonna
talk about hot air too, is because that's the most
important thing right now. Because it gets cold outside, we
start heating our house, and like I've talked about a
thousand times before, when we heat air, something called stack

(02:12):
effects starts to take place in our house and air rises.
And something that a lot of people don't think about
is that when that air rises, every little penetration in
your home. So it's gonna automatically through stack effect get
sucked through things like vents and or outlets, and it's
a perfect chimney chase up your wall. You've got your

(02:34):
electrical wires running right up the wall, right into the attic,
and that's where a lot of them come from, is
the attic, and then down or plumbing.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Penetrations the same thing.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
So what the biggest difference between what we do and
what other insulation companies do is that we educate. So
we want to educate a homeowner on exactly how the
home works. When a homeowner calls us and says, I
think I need more insulation, OK, perfect, we're gonna book
a time to come out, sit down and talk. But
then we want to run through a few questions. Why

(03:04):
do you think you need more insulation. Do you think
your furnace is running way too much? Do you have
a thousand square foot home and your heating bill is
eight hundred dollars a month, You know that's a problem.
Do you have cold floors? Is your home drafty? Do
you have rooms in the summer that you just can't even.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Use because they're too hot?

Speaker 3 (03:24):
We see this all the time, So we want to
take a whole home approach and an educational approach to
really have a homeowner understand what's going on. Ok, why
are your floors cold? This is why your floors are cold,
and this is how we can help it. Why is
your furnace running too much? While that's because the air
is actually turning over too many times in your home.

(03:45):
So as that air turns over and we pull more
cold air in, now we have to heat that cold air.
And it's a vicious cycle. It never stops.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
But what we hope to do is slow.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
It, and that is through air, ceiling and insulating.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
We know that we lose at least.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Sixty percent of all the energy in our house straight
through the ceiling, straight through the roof, so as we
heat it, it rises, it goes through all of the penetrations,
It goes through our sheet rock where we have inadequate insulation,
It goes into the attic and our addicts are vented,
and it goes straight out to the outside, which we

(04:22):
know is not where we want.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
It to be.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
So we have created a couple different types of attics,
and one we we've spent a lot of time here
over the past few months is coming up with the best,
the very best solution, the best way to attack an attic.
And we named it and we actually named it the
Ultimate Atdict solution. And that is a combination of spray foam.
That is a combination of chimney.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Flashing in the attic.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
That's a combination of canlight covers, and that's a combination
of insulation.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
So what that ultimate.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
Addic solution does is we're going to put a code
of spray foam on the entire attic floor. We're not
going to spot are seal. We're going to put an
inch down across the whole thing. That way, we know
we know that every excuse me, we know that every
square inch of that attic is air sealed. What that
spray foam also does is it gives us an our value.
So it's like adding insulation as well, So we're air

(05:15):
ceiling and adding insulation or an insulation value at the
same time, and then we're putting insulation over it.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
Now, if that's.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
Too expensive, we do have a step down, which is
a hybrid ultimate attic, which involves some spray foam, some
spot ceiling, and some insulation.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
So we've really.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
Taken time to figure the very very best ways to
attack attic because I'm telling you, Sean, what we're usually
up against is someone coming in the home, peeking their
head up in the attic, taking a laser measure, or
figuring out the square footage and going, okay, it's going
to be this much to add some insulation. And what
I tell my guys every single day is you will
find homeowners who just wants you to throw some more

(05:52):
insulation up in their attic. It will almost always not
do a thing for them. They will span and a
couple thousand dollars to feel no different and to save
zero energy. Now, if somebody hardly has any insulation, obviously
that'll help mostly in the summer, not so much in
the winter. But we have to take an educational approach

(06:15):
to it so people understand this is the best way
to do it. This is what it's going to do
for you while you live in your home, and the
eye product of that is making your home more energy efficient. Now,
I mentioned last week that we've or last week or
the week before, I don't know, they all run together
these Wednesdays that we're shooting new podcasts, and we're really

(06:36):
trying to explain all of the different rebates that are
out there right now. Because there is a federal rebate
that has to do with the Inflation Reduction Act, and
Wisconsin was given over one hundred and fifty million.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
Dollars to give away.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
I know that sounds amazing, but not everybody qualifies. And
in this podcast, what we've done is we're breaking it
down so people understand what it is, who qualifies, and
how you qualify. I would highly recommend watching us because
we break it down pretty granularly so people can understand

(07:09):
what's available. So if you see ads out there saying,
you know, get five thousand dollars for putting insulation in
your house, and this and that that it is possible
you possibly could. It's based off of income, it's based
off of area. But we break it down into layman's term,
so somebody can understand it. And if you want to
know more, call us. We've trained all of our reps

(07:31):
on exactly how you get the money. We have auditors
that we work with that can do the auditing and
we can take care of it for you. So I
guess what I'm saying is.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
There is money.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
There's free money to fix your home, and we can
show you the best ways to attack your attic, which
is the main area where we lose energy and heat,
especially in the winter time.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
And money.

Speaker 3 (07:54):
So exactly and money, it's we like to say it's
a byproduct. We don't we don't want to go out
and say he replace your windows and say fifty percent
off your energy bill because we know that that's bs.
We know that that's not necessarily possible, and there's a
lot of factors. Yes, if your whole house is windowed
in storm windows which I have seen, and you put
new double pain argone or are gone filled windows, yes

(08:18):
you could save.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
A lot of energy.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
But most people don't have that. Most people have gas
filled double pain windows. That's what we've been doing for
like the last forty years, so we have well, there's
also other companies out there saying we can spray foam
into your wall and you're gonna save fifty percent off
your energy bills.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
Well, if your walls.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
Don't have any insulation in them and you put foam
in them, yes you will save a bunch of money.
But if you already have insulation in your walls, now
we're spraying fom into the walls. The one thing that
we know, and ask me.

Speaker 2 (08:46):
Because we've tried it.

Speaker 3 (08:47):
Actually make it worse because we can actually push insulation
around and create air voids. But what we do know
is that we lose a minimum of sixty percent of
the energy through the attic and we know the best
way to attack it.
