Eight oh eight thirteen ten wib A very appropriate music.
As we talked this morning with Andrew Larson from Larsen
Home Services, the website Larsenhomeservices dot com. That's l A R.
S O N Home Services dot com. Telephon number six
eight five three five forty three forty three. That's five
(00:20):
three five four three four three. And I say, very appropriate, Andrew.
I can't imagine Santa and his reindeer parking on your
roof only to have it's the stuff slide down because
your roof is coated in ice. You don't want that.
That's bad news. How you been my friend?
Speaker 2 (00:34):
You know? Uh, deer hunting season got done.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Yeah, and and now.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
We're covered in snow. It's not even officially technically legally
winter yet, but it's winter. Yeah. I got up, got
my workout in doing the radio show. We're gonna teach
a little bit about icicles and ice dams, and then
I have to go outside and plow for like two hours.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Oh gee, how old are.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
It's a heated u TV with hystereo.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
And there you go. There you Oh, I didn't realize
I'm gonna have to talk to you about that. I'm
thinking about adding applow to the front of my but
we'll talk about that.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
A different time.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Let's talk about it really well, okay, definitely awesome. Well
let's talk then, Andrew, because this is I'll drive around
and thanks to you, and this is literally this is
not a joking or exaggeration, all your fault. When I
drive around during winter months now, I'm always looking at roofs.
I'm always looking for places where there's like snow melts,
where clearly there's heat getting up into the attic. I'm
(01:33):
also always looking at icicles another thing, and other problems
that can be caused. All thanks to you, Andrew, and
I'm noticing it's sadly a common problem.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
You're welcome. Yeah, you know what, like right now, we've
gotten I we've gotten a good amount of snow. I mean,
I can't remember exactly how much snow we got last year,
but I mean we're gonna blow that out of the water.
And you know, we get a lot of calls simply
because we talk about ice and ice dams a lot.
And you know, even with our you know, gutter shutter
(02:05):
is awesome. It works amazing, you never have to clean,
it'll handle all the water in the world, but with
any covered gutter system allows ice and snow to slide
off the roof user, so people will see more icicles
typically with with a system like ours or any covered gutter,
simply because it allows it to not all build up.
All the melting snow from your roof can't build up
(02:26):
inside the gutter. It's allowed to shed off of the
house and it forms icicles. So if you're one of
our customers, you have gutter shutter and you see icicles,
that's what's happening. Can we stop that completely? No, there's
things we can do that will help that. We can
add heat cables to gutters if it's a really big problem,
But honestly, most of that problem is starting inside your
(02:48):
house as soon as your furnace kicks on, and that's
there's no other way around it. Yes, Mother Nature with
with you know those days we get in the winter
where it's you know me, maybe twenty five to thirty
degrees and you get some sun and it's on the
you the south side of the house, and the sun
beats on it all day long. It thaws all that
(03:11):
snow off the top part of your house and then
it gets down to the cold edge metals, your drip
edge and your gutters, and it refreezes and you will
start to see more icicles. You can start to see
if your gutters are open, you'll start to see ice
dams forming from that. That's just mother nature. Now, we
haven't had any real excuse me, real opportunity for that
(03:31):
of late, because we've gotten snow and it's been cold.
It's been pretty darn cold. So what's happening is we're
turning that furnace on in the house. We're filling the
house up with warm air. And because most people's I
should say most houses pre say, two thousand and ten,
(03:54):
it's kind of about kind of the cut off twenty
ten when people really started seeing the important proper air seal.
They don't have air ceiling in their attic. Most of
the time they're under insulated. But even if you're even
if you have the appropriate amount of insulation and you
don't have any air ceiling done, the heat from the
inside of your house is gonna go up. It's gonna
go through all those little tiny cracks, it's gonna go
(04:16):
through outlets, and it's gonna go up electrical where the
electrical chases are up in your wall where plumbing chases are.
Then it's gonna hit your cold deck and it's gonna
start melting that snow. It starts melting the snow on
the very top of the roof. Well, what happens is
we have something called a softt and soft is the
part of your roof that hangs over your wall. Usually
(04:40):
usually two feet, usually about twenty four inches. Sometimes they're
bigger depending on the home design. You'll see three foot overhangs,
four foot overhangs, sometimes there's a one, but anywhere it's
usually usually around two feet. That's where our air is
allowed to ventilate up into the attic and then out
the on the roof. Whether you've got box vents or
(05:02):
you've got a ridge vent. Ridge vent is most typical nowadays.
It looks the cleanest and it's the best sort of ventilation.
Put that on the very peak. Now a lot of
people think, well, I've got to have this ventilation. It's
it's gonna stop ice dams. It's what's what keeps my
roof cool in the summer. Not really all that true.
And you learn that when you start to work in addicts. Okay,
(05:26):
when you work in attics you realize that it no
matter what kind of ventilation you have, if it's hot out,
it's hot in there. Yeah. But what it really does
is it carries moisture out, and that's the biggest part.
And if you don't have proper air ceiling, you will
have a lot of moisture in your attic because all
that warm air is carrying moisture from the inside of
the house. That's where you can get condensation on your
(05:47):
roof deck, where it leads to mold and other bad issues.
But anyway, I kind of got off a little bit there.
But as that snow melts and gets over the cold
soffet because it's outside the warm wall of the house,
it freezes and we get a freeze. We get a
thaw and a freeze, and a thaw and a freeze
and a thaw and a freeze. And now it starts
(06:07):
to build up an ice dam. And it's called an
ice dam because that's exactly what it is. It is
a wall of ice. Now you get to a certain
point where that water that snow keeps melting and it
hits that dam of ice, and now you've got actual
water sitting behind it, and it starts to creep in
underneath the shingles, and then it refreezes, and what that
(06:27):
does is it breaks the shingle seals. And then it
happens again and it creeps in under the shingles and
it lifts them, breaks the seals, and eventually it gets
in to your roof decking starts to leak in through
your OSB. Next thing you know, you get wet in
salation and honestly, it takes a while for it to
rear its ugly head inside the house. But it creates mold,
(06:50):
it creates leaks. It's bad all around. That's why we
invented the Ultimate Attic Solution, because we are doing a
perfect air of your attic floor, a perfect redo of
all of the critical details in your attic, and a
perfect reinsulate so you are insulated for the hot summers
(07:10):
to keep your your ceiling from turning into a radiant oven.
Your attic floor is completely one hundred percent ear sealed.
We're not spot ceiling, we're spray foam ceiling the entire
attic floor, so none of that hot air is getting
through with that moisture. Some still can, obviously, but drastically
slowing it. So we are slowing and or stopping the
(07:33):
formation of ice dams. We are keeping the heat that
you pay for in your home. We are keeping the
heat in the summer in the attic, and we are
keeping it from baking the inside of your home. So
we're making your home more comfortable, less ice dams. And
you know, just this little side effect of it is
that you will save energy which does save money.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
