Speaker 1 (00:02):
Thirteen ten WIBA Madison in the morning, Sean prayable with
you and we have got a full studio this morning.
Good friends from Wake Up Wisconsin WKW Channel twenty seven
in studio with us, Dana. I'll start with you first.
How you do one today? Oh wonderful.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
It's nice to actually see you in person, Sean.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
Yes, yes, this.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Feels real, and I do have two really good friends
with me here this morning. We'll start with Jake, our
newest edition to the team.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
Jake, we're becoming good friends.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
We're getting there, We're getting there, all right, all right,
so we're coworking. We're going to bounce over to Emma then,
because I.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Think I think we've already crossed that line.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
We're on the friends level. I would definitely say, yeah, Emma,
Hippis and Emma just real quick, recent meteorological degree graduate.
How exciting is that for you to go right from
college to do in the morning show.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
Yeah, super exciting. I mean starting in my home market
as well. I'm from Verona, twenty miles outside of Madison.
I grew up watching Channel twenty seven, So yeah, definitely
kind of a dream come true for first job.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
I didn't know you were a local.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
Yeah, I mean I grew up listening to this station,
so it's.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Great to see you and Jake you came from. You've
got a little different story, certainly. I've bounced around a
whole lot. I've been in Wisconsin just about a month.
I grew up in Los Angeles, I worked in Texas,
where I also went to school. I went to SMU,
and then moved my way to North Carolina, where I've
been for the last four years. Jake, iikes did with
(01:27):
twenty seven you've been on now? Has it been a month?
Almost a month? Yeah? Pretty much.
Speaker 5 (01:31):
I think this week is a full month hitting employment,
so we're getting close to my benefits and all of
the other things that'll ha waries.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
You've got healthy in exactly exactly, Dana. What's that like
when you welcome a new co anchor to the to
the morning shows that what's that experience been like for you?
Speaker 2 (01:47):
It's been fantastic, you know, I understand. I've been here
for almost a decade now, so I am so sold
on Wisconsin as a whole, specifically southern Wisconsin. So when
I get to bring other people in and share that
excitement and say you're here, with us.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Now, let's do this, Let's go forward. It's been good.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
I've loved also following you guys on social media, all
three of you, and you guys always are very fun
and having new things. Have you had a chance to
take them out and show them around town? And we did.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
We did a Mallard's game which was a ton of fun.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
And then we're trying to kick Jake out this weekend
doing the Square of course, are fare on the Squares
this weekend and then Feta Marquette.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
Oh yeah, what had you been your favorite Jake so far?
As far as just a venter experience here in Wisconsin.
Speaker 5 (02:27):
You know, one of my favorites at least every Saturday
the Farmers Market downtown.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
I live really close there.
Speaker 5 (02:33):
Just getting to walk through and see all the people
who come down there for it, and get to see
all the local produce and see all the local businesses.
It's been kind of cool to meet and greet a
bunch of people down there. And honestly, I would love
to say that my favorite thing so far has been
just kayaking. Oh yeah, Nonona, I could spend hours and
hours and hours on there. I've never done anything like
(02:53):
that before. I've been on boats, and I've been to
the beach before, being from LA. But just sitting out
there in a kayak, you know you can you can
go as far as you want, you can go as
long as you want, or you can just kick your
feet up and relax.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Yeah, it's been It's been great for this summer. A
lot to explore and a lot to see in Emma.
Having your background here a Dane County lifelong resident, Yeah,
you've got to be a great influence as well, kind
of showing all the little tricks and secrets around the area, right,
I like to think.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
So I need to get him to a uw football game.
That's my goal for this do a few of those. Yes,
I will be jumping around.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Oh, I can't wait to see. That's what we need.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
That's in the future though, when I get there with that.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
And is We talked this morning with the of course
Wake Up Wisconsin crew. We've got Dana Fulton, We've got
Jake Iixtend, and of course we've got Emma Hippis here
in studio with us this morning. Voices that you hear
each and every morning right here on thirteen ten WIBA
and throughout the day the morning show is and obviously
an important part for a lot of folks. That's kind
of how they start the day. And Dana, I'll ask
(03:49):
you a little bit about this, about kind of that
important role that you're playing for people. You're really setting
the mood for the entire day, aren't you.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
One percent people get a routine, they want to wake
up and see a familiar face, they want to hear
a familiar and there's a comfort to that, and there's
a trust and authenticity that comes to that too. We're
especially in a time right now where there's an ai
revolution where you can pull any voice or any image
that you want and to be able to say no.
The three of us live here, we are with you.
(04:15):
We're starting our day with you too. These are stories
that matter to all three of us because we're in
this community. So that's why we're going to start and
share that information.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
What time, And I guarantee you this is not the
first time it's beIN asked, probably not even the first time.
Today time you guys get started in the morning.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
So the show starts.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
At four thirty, but please know that we are in
the studio well before the three of us. I guess
we can all share our alarm situation. My alarm goes
off at about one thirty, and I'm one of those
people that only needs one alarm.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
I'm with you, yeah, that early though.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
My alarm goes off at twelve thirty, and then it
goes off every five minutes until two o'clock. My poor
roommates and I get in around two thirty in the morning.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Yeah, j has makes me feel like a loser.
Speaker 5 (04:56):
I have a two to five alarm and then a
two ten emergency alarm that usually goes off once I'm
already up. But yeah, I'm two zero five right now
pretty much every day, and I try to be in
my chair just before three.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
And Jake, is this your first morning show? It is?
Speaker 4 (05:10):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (05:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (05:11):
So I started in Texas my news career. I was
a reporter and did auxiliary sports, and that was in
West Texas where Friday Night Lights is king. The high
school football out there is the biggest thing anybody can
talk about, except for obviously the oil that comes from
the Permian Basin.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
That's obviously really important too.
Speaker 5 (05:29):
The energy infrastructure across America comes from West Texas, but
so does the love of the Great Iron. I would
say and that really helps spur my next job choice,
which was being the sports director in Wilmington, North Carolina.
I really hammered home our football coverage. Basketball is also
really big in North Carolina. But I think that sports
background has really helped me transition into the morning role.
(05:52):
Kind of like we're talking about, like there's a community
trust there. It's more than just information dissemination. There's a
relationship built of waying up with somebody and getting to
know who they are. They're quirks and you know what
they laugh at and things like that.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
Are you gonna be working with Kylie when when football
high school football starts?
Speaker 5 (06:09):
I would be honored and blessed to do anything in
any and everything that they asked me for you, and
every once fall rolls around, I will be working some
of those Friday nights and hopefully I can even get
involved in some Saturday stuff at Camp Randall.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
I just got all the morning so do not take them,
but I do. I want to double down on that though,
because Jake and I share We both started in news,
and of course we found our niche He loves sports
and I love weather, but that combination in the morning
to know that, hey, we understand all the avenues of
local news and how we can start your date with that.
I think that's something that really attracted us to bringing
(06:43):
Jake onto this team.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
What's it like? Obviously most folks remember you started as
here in Madison as a meteorologists. Now that now the anchor.
How does that for you? That's got to be it's
got It's a cool journey, and it's obviously your heart's
probably always in as much as you know you love
sharing the news. That stuff there is such an exciting
it is.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
I mean, when is weather or not news?
Speaker 2 (07:05):
I exactly absolutely a part of our structure when I'm
producing the show, not just anchoring it, but how does
it fit in all together? And whether we're talking about
all of the events happening all the weekend, if we're
talking about voting and what people need to wear to
go out the forecast, that part of my brain doesn't
shut down.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
Talk this Morning with Dana Fulton and of course we've
also got Emma Hippus along with us and Jake. Iikes
had the newest member of Wake Up Wisconsin on WKOW
Channel twenty seven, talking a little bit about their day
and a little bit about a little bit about them
getting to know them a little bit more. And Jake,
you're a softball guy too, Am I right on there?
Speaker 5 (07:36):
Yeah, so I've I am a two time intermural softball
champion from SMU. We actually beat the baseball team our
senior year of one of my great athletic feats. I
played a couple other adult sports along the way, love
like rec league basketball. I haven't done that in a
few years though, so it might take me a little
bit to actually move up and down the court at
this point of my life. But yeah, i'd say baseball, softball.
(07:56):
I'm a big golfer whenever I can get out. I know,
Wisconsin's got so many amazing public golf courses for me
to explore, especially while I can during the summer. But yeah,
those those kind of recreational sports are are big in
my life now that I've turned thirty, and I kind
of need to slow down from some of the other.
Like I said, you were talking about playing basketball. There's
zero football going on in my life now. The only
(08:16):
football going on is through the television.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
Yeah, am I gotta ask you. You mentioned, of course, love
and get into the Badger games. What about free What
are some of your recreations. What do you do for
fun around town?
Speaker 4 (08:25):
I'm a big reader. I also love exploring local coffee shops.
I feel like we've got a lot of really good ones,
like on Regent Street or on State Street. So I
love just getting around to like local businesses and just
you know, walks, especially right now, I love just kind
of getting around downtown, going to the terrace. I love
the lakes. Yeah, just stuff like that.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
Dana on it, and I feel like you bring like
ever so often you'll have a little graphic. Those are
your dogs right on your head?
Speaker 2 (08:50):
Yes, yes, if there are two little dogs and anyone
at home nodding along right now would know that. I
call them the sweet potatoes because they are. They're kind
of potato weep but also sweet. So if I'm out side,
they're usually involved in that.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
That is fantastic talk this morning, of course with the
Wake Up Wisconsin team. Of course you can hear them
right at WKWCHANNL twenty seven. They go on there four
thirty AM, four thirty to seven, and then back at eleven.
Let's talk about that eleven o'clock newscast and what goes
into that. I obviously we talked about, you know, getting
everything set for the day with Wake Up Wisconsin the
eleven o'clock that's become a really important thing for folks
(09:23):
as well. Let's talk Dan. I know you obviously are
very much involved in, not just on camera, but behind
the scenes as well. Let's talk about what goes into
putting that all together.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
Sure, our eleven o'clock show is now a statewide show.
And while that may sound very daunting and big, it's
it's I think, this great opportunity to share Wisconsin stories
for everybody. Because people in southern Wisconsin still vacation up north,
people up north still follow the Badgers, they still follow
what's happening in the capital city. So there's this wonderful
blend and it's a great thirty minute opportunity to say, hey,
(09:55):
just to recap everything. If you missed it, here are
the highlights. Here are the things that we're talking about
today across the state. It's also going to include national news,
but it's it's going to be the headlines for everybody
in Wisconsin. And that's the show that Jake is actually
going to be at the head of.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
Now, oh, that's going to be yours. That's good now
I apologize because I'm typically sitting in a studio somewhere
at eleven. Now I do put you guys, I think, yeah,
you guys are on right now. Yeah, good job. Yes
that was completely coincidential, but darn good reason why it
is so for you? Jake, when when that kind of
starts going, what's for you? What's what are you looking
(10:30):
forward most with that?
Speaker 5 (10:31):
With that eleven o'clock, Yeah, Dana kind of dove into
the philosophy of it. One of the biggest things, you know,
I recognize news as news and there is a need
to tell stories. But one of my biggest priorities is
making the show into something along the lines of like.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
Tell me something good that I didn't know.
Speaker 5 (10:47):
And that is I don't want to say easy to
do with the you know, the stories you can get
from across the state, but our affiliates also do a
great job of finding those kinds of stories. I love
any kind of just something that will leave you with
the smile. Again, like, I recognize not all news is
good news, and a lot of that is important. But
if there is a little way that I can tweak
(11:08):
something or add something in a little bit to add
a positive light and shine an element on those communities,
on the people in those communities, on a organization, a
nonprofit that is doing good. I'm most certainly going to
take that chance to do it.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
That is great to hear as we talked this morning
with Jake Eichstad, of course, Dana Fulton and Emma Hippos
w kW Wake Up Wisconsin. H Dana, and this is
something I've got a chance over the years to watch
watch you on television and see a lot of a
lot of your work. It's an important balance and this
is something that I don't know that everyone fully appreciates.
Is obviously there's serious news. There's really you know, there's
(11:43):
things happen. Speaking of Texas, what's been going on there.
I mean, this is this is stuff that that that
makes your heartache and and having that balance between that's
the serious news, but also there's a you guys have fun.
It's it's it's and that is uh And maybe it's
somebody that works in media that maybe can appreciate a
little bit more. That is a real talent. That's a
(12:04):
real skill that you guys do. At twenty seven, it is.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
It's a lot.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
You're very right, I won't downplay that at all. But
like Jake said, these are stories that impact our community,
and there are stories that when I go home, I
still have to talk about my taxes and.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
What I'm voting for in my community.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
When we had tornadoes come down through cross Plains a
few years ago, my home was impacted to so those
little things that people are talking about at home, when
you're at the dinner table and you're laughing about what
happened at school, but also looking at school referendum choices,
all of that is in the table, and all the
newscasts it is.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
It's a great day if you got one of those DVRs.
I have a little thing I record every morning, and
I want to get home first and I just catch
up on news, great data, set that up and again
Wake Up Wisconsin on Wkwchannel twenty seven. Kicks off four
thirty am, goes until seven, of course at eleven am
with the Wisconsin News. Now got the whole crew here
this morning. Guys. Thank you so much for joining us,
and have a great day. John, thank you, Yeah, Sean,
(12:56):
thank you. Take care. Guys. News comes your way next
right here on thirteen ten. Doub ib A
