one thirteen ten. Looking at the forecast rain and there's.
Speaker 4 (01:33):
Some big storms north bus right now.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
Just looking at that earlier, it is not good and
that's no bueno.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
But locally right here in the medisonary are not bad
right now, and there's a little rain chance for some storms.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
We're kind of late in the season.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
Is this kind of the point where we kind of
just you know, it's what's happened is going to happen.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Yeah, I think it's you know, it tends to be
pretty volatile. Yeah, this time of year. I mean, you know,
we had what ten days of really chilly lee and
then another week of then it got really hot again.
Speaker 4 (02:03):
So it's it's just the season letting go.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
It doesn't ever seem to be between like fall and winter,
but summer and fall and winter and spring always seem
to be those sort of catch points.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
Yes, yes they do, and they're they're interesting times the
seasons the year, that's for sure too. Yeah, as you're
speaking of, we'll talk about us, you know, as today
is the going to be the litter late it was
at a one nineteen pm something like that.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
Yeah, some storms for us, yet just after lunch it looks.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
Like yeah, and they also the one nineteen is where
the first day of fall is.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
Oh that yes, it is?
Speaker 4 (02:42):
That is that is astronomical.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
Yes at that minute, yes, that minute, And apparently according
to Madison dot com, that's not even right for Madison anyway,
So to heck with it.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Ours is until Thursday. It's got a couple of extra days. Yeah,
I don't get the math. I don't get I do
know we're not ready.
Speaker 4 (03:05):
I give us another couple of days. Okay, whatever, let
us know when you're ready.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Yes, exactly.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
I know. Apparently the days don't line up until Thursday
for Madison is so in this area.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Yeah, I got it.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
That makes no sense.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
No, Okay, I don't get it either, Leasa, don't.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
I don't know to investigate that one something and something
else to work on, but I do want to ask you,
and we'll get into this.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
Of course, once we start getting into.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
Fall, all sorts of stuff going on with the Bruce Company,
including family fall fests, we'll talk about that. We'll talk
about things you can be doing around the yard right now.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
We can also talk about.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Ways to beautify you're living spaces indoors and outdoors and
other things. But first and foremost, as we talk about
events going on at the Bruce Company, I know you've
been busy updating all sorts of things up on the website.
It's important for folks to follow you on social media
and subscribe to the to the newsletter as well, just
kind of keep in touch with what's going on for
company because it's action back the next few months.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
It is this is this time of year is when
we have all sorts of celebrations at the store and
lots of workshops and so there are lots of opportunities
to come in and learn something, have some fun, haul
your family in. Yes, like Fall Faster is just a
really great family event. That is, you know, it's free
(04:23):
to the community. Yeah, lots of things going on, petting
zoos and pumpkin painting that we will have the balloon
guy there and face painter.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
So it's just a lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
It is a great it's it's I think for a
lot of folks.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
You know, the big events you guys do at the
Bruce Company become traditions for families. Is especially you know,
you have kids and then they have kids, they start
bringing grandkids to things like this, and.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Yeah, we have heard stories along those lines, so I
believe it.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
How long has the Bruce Company been around now?
Speaker 4 (04:53):
Nineteen? I think next year seventy five. Wow, yeah, I
don't think it this year. I think it's next year
is seventy five.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
Generations upon generations of folks going through. So that's that's
the other cool thing too for for the Bruce Company.
If you've got a question, love to get you on
the air, of course, helping number to join Lisa. I've
got a question six eight, three, two, one, thirteen ten,
that's six oh eight three two one, thirteen ten.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Speaking of beautifying the yard, and.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
One of the things that's kind of I know you
talk about, Lisa, delayed gratification for gardening.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
Bulbs are definitely a delayed gradd They are.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
One of the they are one of the most important
examples of delayed gratification. Yeah, you plant them, not right,
not today, no, but you plant them at this time
of year and then you don't see anything.
Speaker 4 (05:39):
Until spring.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
It's like it's it's like a huge leap of faith.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Yeah, in the world of overnight shipping and things, I know, I.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
Know, you can never not be attached to this thing
that you call your phone.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Yes, what a great reward though, it is having that
the patients.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
Yeah, and you know, just when you think winter is
never going to end, then your crocus pop up or
you see snowdrops or winter aconite. So it's really lovely
it is. We sell premium, We have premium bulbs. We
have a good selection, and right now I think some
of a few of the more unusual things are not
(06:20):
in yet but will be soon.
Speaker 4 (06:23):
And you don't want to plant now it's a little early.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
You want to wait for the ground to start to freeze,
so generally after the first frost, then you can go
ahead and plant your bulbs, and.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
The danger are doing it now as they are going
to Wait.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
If we get like a weird weather pattern, they might
start to grow above ground and you really don't want that.
So you want them to spend some time developing roots.
And so you could put in like a bull booster,
which would be a starter fertilizer at the time you plant. Also,
if you have your yard is overrun with rabbits and squirrels,
(07:00):
you might also want to treat them with with a
uh stinky spray of sorts, yes, yes, something like repels
all or liquid fence, just so you can just do
a quick squirt in the hole once the bulbs are
in there and then cover them up and.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
That'll keep that'll keep them from being dug out.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
They and they and whatever reason for those for those
little u little vermin.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
They they those are delicious vitals.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
Yeah, they're juicy.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
And yes, now the things you don't have to worry about,
of course, are daffodils. They're mildly toxic, so the critters
tend to stay away from them. And then if you
plant things like alium or fertile area. Those are bulbs
that come with their own repellent scent, and so those
are pretty safe as well.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
Is there a book or something where somebody uses alium
like to because it's so bitter, I feel like something.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
I have to look that up. That's that's that's gonna
be my my research.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
Okay, you're going to research that. Research this awkward Madison skipping.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
Falls the thing as usual. So with that is, and
then so we can get in and we can pick
up balls. As far as storage, I know that the
window isn't that great, but yeah, you want to.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
Keep them if you're buying them in there in packages.
A lot of those packages are perforated, but I would
certainly open them up and put them on a you know,
a flat cardboard box or something like that.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
You want to store them.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
In a cool ish, dark, kind of airy.
Speaker 4 (08:36):
Dry place.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
Sounds like a garage to me.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
Yeah, not your generally, not your basement at this time
of year, because it's just so damp.
Speaker 4 (08:43):
Okay, right now, and you're not waiting long.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
We're talking probably a matter of a few weeks before
you can go ahead and put them in the ground.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
Okay, And well, and we'll sound the alarm when it's
time to start.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. And if you want to force.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
Them, force you know for early spring growth, and you
would just pop them up and again leave them in
your garage in a cool place.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
Oh perfect.
Speaker 4 (09:06):
They need they do need a chill period.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
They do need to Yes, don't we all? Don't we
a period to shell? Yes, we knew.
Speaker 1 (09:13):

Speaker 2 (10:10):
Little email list. A cool thing at gardening Tips and
some other updates on promotions. And I think it's going
to the Burst Company.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
So you guys do you do a lot of blogging
and stuff for the Bruce Company's a lot of writing,
you guys, we do a lot, which I love, is
like and I also like that you guys do like I.
It was just at Bruce Company dot com and uh,
little profiles on folks and like my favorite plant and
some other things due that stuff is fun.
Speaker 4 (10:37):
Yeah, it's a good website. It's very dynamic.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
We change change out the galleries, you know, on a
regular basis and update the photos.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
How long you guys, And it's been a couple of years,
but I remember, like it has it been like two
three years? You guys did like a major overhaul of
the website too, for folks that hadn't been there for
a little while.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
Yeah, I think that when I we did a huge
redesign when I like a couple of years after I started.
Speaker 4 (11:08):
So it's going to be like ten years ago. But
now we have.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
We have an assistant in our marketing department and she
is a really great graphic designer. So she has been
overhauling the website one page at a time.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
Oh is that what's going on?
Speaker 4 (11:24):
Yeah? So it so it's like I said, it's and
and she.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
Is really good about keeping it updated.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
That's the thing.
Speaker 3 (11:34):
You know, you put a lot of time and energy
into a website and then you kind of then you say, Okay,
that looks great, but you really need somebody to be
dedicated to it, and it's really hard to find somebody.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
And she does a great job.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
That explains a lot because there's I love how it's
always and that's why I tell folks get on over
to brust company dot com.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
Check that out.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
And while you're there you can see, of course, some
of the great Garden Center specials going on.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
And it's that time yearly so.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
Where there are some really nice opportunities and to save
some money.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
Yeah, we're trying something different in the nursery this year.
We're doing some stacking sales. So in essence, the more
you buy, the more you save. So all of the
nursery stock, tree shrubs and evergreens.
Speaker 4 (12:15):
Okay, it's if you buy.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
Three or more you can save fifty on everything, and
if you buy five or more you'll save sixty. So
we're encouraging multiple buying.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
And you know what, and it's a great time because.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
There's there's a lot of really cool stuff there and
there are you know, decent quantities on something. So if
you wanted to do like a hedge or something like that,
we can help you out with that. Perennials are twenty
percent off, right, Okay, So perennials are.
Speaker 4 (12:47):
Not considered nursery stock. They are not forty percent off.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
You mentioned kind of the stack stack savings.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
I do know that you as my guess, but just
like like you've got cats, you need get them inmultiples
of two.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
I think The same is for plants. If you're gonna
buy one, you need at least two three.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
Well, especially this time and it's still the weather is
holding really nicely, and honestly, plants are going to continue
to establish until the ground is pretty cold. Okay, so
you've got a solid eight weeks before we start to
see that. I would, though, at this time of year,
are there are three things you need to remember. Make
sure you water water because it rain at this time
(13:27):
of year can be adequate, but it comes in clumps,
so good soilk once a week until the ground freezes.
I would definitely use the root stimulator when you're planting.
That just gives the roots a little bit of extra tonic,
a little shot of something something to get the fine
root growth going.
Speaker 4 (13:46):
And then mulching.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
Okay, multing is a really good idea if you're planting perennials, though,
hold off on.
Speaker 4 (13:51):
Your mulch until the ground freezes.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
So get a bag of mulch and put it in
the garage and once the ground is frozen, you can
go ahead and at your perennials.
Speaker 2 (14:01):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (14:01):
The freeze thaw of the winter.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
Time will sometimes heave things out, so you want the
ground to stay frozen.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
And that's what you're mulching for, is what.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
You're malching perennials for. You're maulching for a bunch of
different reasons, but at this time of year it's a
little trickier with.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
Perennials, the strategy of maulching.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
Who knew a mulching strategy?
Speaker 1 (14:19):
Yes, support speaking of this time of year as well,
days can be warm, nights can be cool.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
Which I love sitting down on a nice fall night. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
One thing that I know makes it a whole lot
better for everyone, I'll speak for my significant other. Definitely
more enjoyable for is heat sources. And I know you
guys have a bunch of do you have some.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
We have some really good clearancing of some floor models
in the furniture department. We have a decent selection of
fire tables and they're thirty percent off on selected ones.
So if you want to pop a fire table into
your yard, now is a perfect time to do that.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
Find fire tables to be they are so cool. But
I'm always mesmerized by the flame, you know, and you know,
you learn early that you know that fire is you
know it's burning above and it's like, oh my goodness,
like the way that like on.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
The stones and things.
Speaker 4 (15:14):
Yeah, it's cool.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
It is very very cool.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
Gives off heat, gives off, gives off again, makes the
makes the winter months, Yes, yes, exactly. Do you guys
still have like the the ones with the thing on
the top and the little pole in the middle space,
So you guys are those are popular sometimes and sometimes
I'd rather just.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
Have a grill and smokeless. Uh, you guys got the
smokeless fire those too, man.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
You know, I'm sorry, Well you know what I you know,
what's you know how you find out about this stuff?
Speaker 2 (15:49):
You just stop on into the middle.
Speaker 4 (15:51):
We can help you out with that.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
Yeah, I was going to ask you too.
Speaker 1 (15:55):
So we talked about nursery stock, We talked a little
bit about about bulbs.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
Do we talk about perennials? Do we get to get
into the week just a little bit?
Speaker 4 (16:02):
You're twenty percent off.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
So so if you want something that's going to hang
out for years to come.
Speaker 3 (16:09):
Absolutely, there's and there's the benches are there's some cool
stuff on the benches. We also have all of the
fall annuals, lums and that kind of thing.
Speaker 4 (16:17):
Pumpkins are out.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
That's what you're reading my mind, Lisa, have Trent worked
on them all weekend?
Speaker 2 (16:23):
Oh yeah, yes, how's the giant pumpkin holding out?
Speaker 4 (16:26):
The giant pumpkin is doing just fine, you can certainly.
I don't know when I'm.
Speaker 3 (16:30):
Gonna announce, Okay, I think it's gonna be after family
fall fouts, Okay, sometime. So we have Charlie Giortino's giant pumpkin,
which it apparently had some something happened and.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
It stopped growing.
Speaker 2 (16:45):
Okay, so we it's early.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
We have it much earlier than usual. You usually don't
see it till the first week of October, but it's
it's in the store now, and so you've got two
chances to win a fifty dollars gift card. Guess the
wait price is right rule, So closest without going over.
If you're in the store, stop at the plant desk.
That's where the jar is with the entries. And if
(17:07):
you're on our Facebook page, you can just scroll down
and find the post and go ahead and stick awaight
on there.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
And you is it's the post and there's I know
that you guys did some video, yeah, yeah, which is
very cool seeing it being trucked in and unloaded. You
know it's big when it requires like a palette and
a pallet challenge for.
Speaker 4 (17:28):
It, like, yeah, we didn't palajack that guy.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
We just wor came on over with the So that's yeah.
Check that out.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
