welcome back.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Thanks hey with more snow.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
Morson. This is what we need, more snow right now.
Where the heck of your space lights look so good
with the suner they do? Where have you been by?

Speaker 2 (00:49):
It was in last.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Week in Alton, Alton, which is a little town in
the Netherlands just across the German border.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Okay, at a big holiday Showroom.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
Elton, Alton two a's AA.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
L al t e N.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
So I posted some video and pictures and I'll do
some more of that over the coming days.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
Of what we saw.

Speaker 3 (01:10):
So we were shopping for Christmas for next year.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
It's always kind of nice because.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
About this time I'm kind of over Christmas twenty twenty
four and I need a little break, yeah, so that
I can sort of celebrate with my own family, with
my own Christmas traditions. But this is a nice break.
It kind of gets me charged up and excited. Yes,
I'm looking into the future.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
And for folks that don't know, if you're new to
the program, welcome to the show. You head out out
to the Netherlands once a year and part of the
obviously it's a big, big show. And one of the things,
correct me if I'm wrong. Europeans do Christmas a little
bit different.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
They do.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
They're a little less rigid, Okay, like the American showrooms,
whether you go to Atlanta or Vegas or Dallas or wherever,
they are, tend to you know, look a lot alike.
There might be, you know, some outstanding thing here or there,
but Americans are very comfortable with the Christmas colors, not

(02:11):
same old, same old, do it the traditional Christmas colors
and so that's and that's fine, But we do twenty
three trees and they can't all be red.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
And green, red and white, blue and white.

Speaker 3 (02:24):
Per indian silver, gold, you know, they need to be
There's a lot of trees, so we like to do
some that are a little maybe out there and sort
of inspirational or aspirational. You might not do a pink
and green tree or purple and green tree with chameleons
in it, but hey, you know.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
What, those turned out to be wicked.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
Colors, so that tree sold really well. You don't have
to do the whole thing, but you might like a
couple things that are on that tree.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
So that's what we do.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
That is and it's awesome that you do that stuff
and of course bring some great stuff back. Was there
anything that I know you you're going to put stuff
up and have stuff up out there? Anything I caught you?

Speaker 3 (03:03):
Well, my love of mushrooms has been confirmed because it
was the number. It was the big sort of showroom theme, mushroom, mushrooms.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
I love an ornament. I love a mushroom ornament. If
anybody goes you know.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
There are.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
There are mushrooms everywhere, so there was that.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
There was.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
A really cool combination that was just super textural, very
natural as far as colors are concerned, but very textural,
lots of you know, like fur and and woven baskets
and that kind of thing.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
So that was kind of cool.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
Oh that's awesome.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
Well, and that's a great thing about getting out and
checking that stuff out and place and orders and other
things too. And I know as you look ahead to
twenty twenty six, we are still in Christmas season twenty
twenty five and the rock Stars are going to be
coming the eight dazzling how many reindeer.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
They bring it. They bring a couple.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
They can't bring them all here because some of them
go to other places. Sure, so yeah, so some of
Santa's reindeer, I like to say they fly in, but
they really come in a trailer.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
Come in grind It's a really fun event. Yeah, it's free.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
You can although if you want your photo, the company
that does this brings a sleigh, so you can do
a photo of your family in the sleigh with the
reindeer in the foreground, and there's.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
A cost for that.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
I think last year it was fifteen or twenty dollars
that goes to the company with the reindeer, but they
also have another one in a pen because they swap
them out if one gets tired or a little cranky
to swap them out.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
Do they get grumpy? Do reindeer ever get grumpy?

Speaker 3 (04:48):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
If you're standing there for hours.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
That's true, that's true.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Maybe no, maybe, but they're they're from noon until two, okay,
And so you can come. We'll be doing the system
that we did last year where you'll come in, you'll
check in with somebody and you'll get a group number,
and then we will.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
Call group numbers.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
Well that works.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Well, It did work really well last year. And I
am the group wrangler. So it could be twelve until two,
twelve until two on Sunday. There also be some other
things going on. Fetch will be there. We're gonna have
a coffee truck. Oh, so there'll be if it's if

(05:27):
it's chili. Does it look like it's gonna be chilly?

Speaker 1 (05:29):
I think it is.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
You have yeah, high of fifteen on Sunday. It's gonna
be cold. It's an outside thing.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
The greenhouse will be open, Okay, so you can go
in there. The beauty of the group number thing is
that you don't have to wait in a long line outside.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
Oh that's great.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
You can go into the store.

Speaker 3 (05:44):
And kind of look around. You can go play, you know,
pet puppies. You can sort of meander around the place
and kind of maybe do some shoppings, maybe warm up.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
But that's the beauty of the group number system.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
Pet puppies is probably going to be a very popular, Yes, option, definitely,
And that's coming up on Saturday from twelve. Did I
say Saturday?

Speaker 2 (06:06):
You did say, Oh my guys, it is not Saturday.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
Please do not come on Saturday looking for reindeer and puppies.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
No, you will not find they will not be there.
You'll find Lisa, you'll find it.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Yeah, but your Sunday, so Sunday, Sunday, Sunday.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Noon and until two at the Middleton Garden Center of
the Ruse Company. As you as you were out looking
towards twenty twenty six, and we're still in twenty twenty five,
it means this season's kind of waning. It's waning, yeah,
which means there's opportunity there.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
Yes, So there are many things on sale in the
garden Center. Like I said to Sean before this, I
left on Wednesday morning, so I haven't been to the gardens.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
Happen.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
I've been there, so I don't know exactly what's going on,
but there's some really good specials. Ornaments are thirty percent
off except for Old World and Inga there at ten.
There are lots of things on sale in the boutique.
There are green so Fresh greens, garlands, that kind of thing, wreaths,

(07:05):
that stuff is fifteen percent off.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
So there are lots of sales.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
You can see all of them listed out on our
website web web page. So if you go there and
you go to the specials page, you'll see all of
that stuff sort of on there, and then you can
see everything.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
Check that out. That's Bruce Company dot com, Bercecompany dot com,
Facebook and social media, the Bruce Company. Great day to
get on into the Middleton Garden Center right at twenty
eight thirty Parmenter Street. That's twenty eight thirty Partment or Street.
And if you've got a question for Lisa, love to
have you join us six eight three two one thirteen ten.
That's six oh eight three two one thirteen ten. If
you got a question for Lisa, love to have you
join us. Maybe your question is how do I care

(07:40):
for point setis? And how do I not care for
point setiis?

Speaker 2 (07:43):
What do I do with my Christmas tree after I
dig it down?

Speaker 1 (07:46):
What do I do with my Christmas tree after I
take it down? Lisa?

Speaker 2 (07:49):
Well you can if you live in town. Yeah, you
can put it out on the curb.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
And I think the city the brush people pick them up,
and I think.

Speaker 1 (07:56):
They grind them, work their magic.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
Yeah, cut the branches off and use that to to
protect some of your more tender perennials. Although we have
snow this year, Wow, that is so good the snow.
I do not like to shovel, I told somebody the
other day. Any tool that involves a long pole with
an implement on the end of it does not make

(08:21):
me happy.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
But snow is a very good insulator for plants.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
Oh perfect.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
So it traps air in there. It keeps the ground cold,
which is what you want. You don't want the ground
to warm up and freeze and thought and freezing thought.
So it's an excellent insulator. It's also protects buds that
are on stems. It's really great that we have snow
and I'm sure our snow removal crew loves it and
hates it at the same time.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
No, I bet you is that what do they call that?
A mixed blessing? Is a mixed Please? You got a
question for Lisa Love David Jonas. It's one of six
SOH eight three two one thirteen ten. That's six SOH
eight three two one thirteen ten. We we talk candles,
we can talk ornaments'll talk lides, talk so much other things.
Take your call as well. Next as Everyday Outdoor Living
with the Bruce Company continues right here in thirteen ten
double eight sixteen thirteen ten double UiB and Everyday Outdoor

(09:09):
Living brought to you by the Bruce Company online Brucecompany
dot com. That's all one word Bruce Company dot com.
Hanging out with Lisa Briggs from the Bruce Company. Just
back from overseas. How's the uh? How's the food? On
a flight back from the Netherlands.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
I cannot eat airplane foods.

Speaker 1 (09:26):
Oh, you don't like airplane No?

Speaker 2 (09:27):
I also do.

Speaker 3 (09:28):
I have a serious potluckphobia also, and I can.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
But airplane food.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
So I bring my own food, okay, like cut apples
and nuts and stuff not but yeah, I can't eat it.
It just I don't know. There was this thing and
like some kind of bread thing.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
I don't know what. It was terrible, hell terrible.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
On a flight back from Germany once and they served sausages, and.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
Of course they did.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
Yeah it's very German, but you're like this is They
were delicious, but there's something about like, yeah, you're stuck
in a tube with a bunch of people. You were
saying too it. As we talked to morn with Lisa
Breaks from the Bruce Company, got a question for Lisa
six o eight three two one thirteen ten. That's six
oh eight three two one thirteen ten. You're not a
good relaxer on flights. You don't like to sleep. I
can't sleep, really.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
I cannot these Sometimes I can like doze for fifteen minutes.

Speaker 2 (10:21):
Yeah, but it doesn't help.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
I just find a movie and try to pay attention
to it.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
Oh man, that's.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
All I can do.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
The absolute best sleep I ever get is on planes.

Speaker 3 (10:32):
I'm a little jealous because the person I went with, Katerina,
and she slept the whole time.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
She woke up and ate and then she slept.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
Are you serious?

Speaker 2 (10:40):
Seriously?

Speaker 3 (10:42):
And even on the way over there, which was an
overnight flight.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
Yeah, I can't.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
Sleep, can't do it. Oh well, it's it's good to
have you back and exciting to see all the great things.
And if you got a question for Lisa, we got
a line up for you right now six eight three
two one thirteen ten at six o eight three two
one thirteen ten get you right on the air with
Lisa Braags from Bruce Company online, Bruce Company dot com,
Facebook and social media, the Bruce Company. Great day to
get on it at the Middleton Garden Center of the

(11:05):
Bruce Company. That's located right at twenty eight thirty Parmenter Street.
That's twenty eight thirty parm Inter Street. Let's talk about
some of the cool things you guys have going on
in store right now. St off with candles. Everyone loves candles.

Speaker 3 (11:17):
Yeah, you guys got talking about the fact that novelty
candles are on sale exactly, So a novel just to
be super cleol. Yes, So a novelty candle is a
candle that's a shape.

Speaker 1 (11:29):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (11:29):
So the candles in the boutique, like the Vans Kittria
and those those are not on sale, but the ones
that are shaped like stonemen or trees or they're twisted.
Those are on sale, so they're in one area. Someone
will be delighted to show.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
You where they are.

Speaker 1 (11:45):
What about ornaments?

Speaker 3 (11:46):
Ornaments we talked about that those are thirty percent off
except for Old World and INGA except except those are ten.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
Did we touch on lights already?

Speaker 2 (11:53):
At least we didn't.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
I believe lights are twenty five percent off, although you're
looking at the screen and I am not.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
I don't have screen.

Speaker 2 (11:59):
I believe there twenty five Okay, I don't have Yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:03):
The one way to find out you get on in
or over.

Speaker 2 (12:05):
Or check the website for sure.

Speaker 1 (12:07):
Company does yeh by the way, and it's been.

Speaker 3 (12:09):
Lights and light ups so like some of that, you know,
light up snowmen and like little night lights and that
kind of stuff.

Speaker 1 (12:17):
Also and the website brust company dot com is and
I hope folks get a chance to get there regularly.
It's been a couple of years, but there was you
guys did like a really major overhaul a couple of
years ago, and it is.

Speaker 3 (12:31):
Sasha has been working on it slowly, chipping away one
sort of section at a time. And Sasha is our
sort of graphic designer. Yeah, she started a couple of
years ago. She's really smart and very creative, and so
she's established kind of a look for the website and
also for our spadia and any of the you know

(12:52):
signage that we have in the store and that kind
of thing, and so it's it's kind of modern, but
it still references the past. I mean, the Bruce Company,
I think next year is seventy five years old, who
been around for a long time.

Speaker 1 (13:07):
Yes, so yeah, your buddy Tom's going to be in
on Friday. By the way, did I tell you here?

Speaker 3 (13:12):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (13:12):
Right that in your very seat, get out of town.
He's going to be Tom from the First Company's going
to be checking in Friday at eight.

Speaker 2 (13:18):
Hilarious.

Speaker 1 (13:19):
I can't wait to hang out. It's should be it
should be fun. It should be a lot of fun,
just like hanging out with you every every week. And Lisa,
when we talk about this time a year, I know
we oftentimes people wonder about their Christmas cactus. What's going
on with it? It bloomed earlier, now it's not blooming.

Speaker 3 (13:34):
Well, they bloomed for a long time. So if it
started to bloom at the proper time, it's probably still
bloom still going because they do hold their flowers for
a long time. Okay, so the thing to do to
get it to bloom is to put it in a
room where it has day length. Like it's not light
at night, So don't put it in your living room
or your den where you watch television till eleven o'clock

(13:56):
at night. Put it in like a bedroom where you know,
a spare bedroom. It does need high light during the day,
but it needs dark. It needs to experience that shortening
day length, and that's what triggers the flowers.

Speaker 1 (14:08):
Oh okay.

Speaker 3 (14:09):
The other issue with Christmas cactus is that they are
They're a cactus, so you need to treat them the
same way you do other cactuses. So you need to
be sparing with the watering. Again, they need really highlight,
and they like it to be a little bit cooler.

Speaker 2 (14:23):
Oh not cold, not like.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
Icy cold, but but cooler, unlike poinsettias, where they are
also native to, you know, a southern area. They're from Mexico.
They like very high light. They like to be watered sparingly,
but not to dry out completely. But they need it
to be warm because they're they're from Mexico and they

(14:48):
don't like the cold. Do you.

Speaker 1 (14:51):
Guys at the Bridget company carry prickly pair something you
can buy for a spring.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
Because it's native here.

Speaker 3 (14:57):
It's actually, Wisconsin actually has a native it's prickly pear.
And we often will have them a few of them
in the spring, not too many. It's it's really hard
for us because they're on tables with all the natives.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
Okay, so it's hard not to overwater them.

Speaker 3 (15:14):
Ah, you know, because you're watering the benches and it's
so usually we get a few and then that's it.

Speaker 1 (15:21):
My neighbor has and it seems like they look very
very cool because I remember the first time I ever
saw them, I said, least say you will not believe that. Yeah,
you're like, you're like, well sewn, there are Actually.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
It's the only one.

Speaker 3 (15:34):
Wisconsin has some very weird like all the sort of
pitcher plants and those kinds of things that grow up
north in the bogs. Yes, you know, the sort of
carnivorous plants. Wisconsin has some weird plants.

Speaker 1 (15:47):
It does you you know what one of these shows we.

Speaker 2 (15:50):
Should do like a Weird Plants of Wisconsin.

Speaker 1 (15:52):
Yes, the Weird of Wisconsin and just do, although it
seems more like something that you could bring to the
expo and do a presentation.

Speaker 2 (16:00):
Are speaking up?

Speaker 1 (16:01):
By the way, when does I know we're expo?

Speaker 3 (16:03):
Is?

Speaker 2 (16:05):
Let's see you guys don't have a calendar. It is
the weekend of.

Speaker 1 (16:09):
Okay, where's my phone?

Speaker 2 (16:11):
Where did I put my phone?

Speaker 3 (16:12):
Sewan?

Speaker 2 (16:14):
Did I know?

Speaker 3 (16:14):
I didn't?

Speaker 2 (16:15):
It is the weekend like around Valentine's Day?

Speaker 1 (16:18):
Oh okay, so we got till February.

Speaker 3 (16:20):
Yeah, it's always February, okay, but it is the weekend
around Valentine's Day.

Speaker 2 (16:25):
It's usually.

Speaker 3 (16:27):
Earlier than that, but for this they must do it
like like a you know, a full like the second
full weekend or something like that. So I'm going to
bring up my calendar and I'll tell you all when
it is.

Speaker 1 (16:37):
What I like about it is it's a sign of spring.

Speaker 3 (16:40):
It is.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
Indeed, it's like we're through it, We're on our way,
and it's never too early.

Speaker 2 (16:45):
Nice way to touch base with everybody.

Speaker 3 (16:46):
Oh gosh, yeah, okay, So it is the thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, okay,
So come spend Valentine's Day at the Garden next Bot.

Speaker 2 (16:53):
Tickets are available at the Bruce Company. Are they now, yes,
you can go, but just ask somebody.

Speaker 3 (16:58):
We don't have them at the plant desk because at
this point in time we are not there's not a
lot of call for them, but they did. Sales started
I think on the first okay, so somebody will take
you back to the.

Speaker 2 (17:10):
Office and.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
Passes are one day's ten I think, two days fifteen
and three days eighteen.

Speaker 1 (17:19):
Okay, so perfect, And that's you know, we talk about
coming up in February and getting getting looking towards the
UH springtime and kind of that official kickoff of things
as well, so you definitely want to want to follow
that stuff. And Lisa, so.

Speaker 3 (17:32):
Everybody's on hand there so you can like talk gardening
to your heart's content because they are like ten people
there who are just as excited, if not more.

Speaker 1 (17:40):
Than you are. You guys have one of the biggest,
if not the biggest, I think we have the Yeah,
I was going to say it's for people are think, well,
it's where am I going to find the squares? Yes,
it's it's simple. You guys are impossible to miss.

Speaker 3 (17:52):
Yeah, and we have an aisle through it, so we
conveniently kind of we can't put anything in the aisle
but it's great for having people yes around in.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
There real quick. Before we wrap this week, I did
want to ask you about some of the some of
the holiday plants and other things that we picked up.
Points that is probably puts a big one care for
those things. I Christina has one from from the Bruce
Company at our office from a couple of years ago.
Now it's doing great and there's they take good care
of it. But you the light thing is important with them,

(18:22):
isn't it.

Speaker 3 (18:22):
Yeah, it depends on the plant. So, but most Christmas
plants like higher light. Okay, so, but we talked about
point Setti as we talked about holiday cactus. Cyclomen are
a plant that needs bright indirect light. Has a really
pretty flower, sort of modeled foliage like green with a
silver pattern on it. Those can be really long lasting.

(18:43):
Those like it cooler bright but indirect light a little
more on the evenle moist side you can do of course. Amaryllis,
Oh yeah, that's that bulb from South Africa has a
huge stock with the big trumpety flowers on it. Those
are really popular and those are not difficult. It's a

(19:05):
tedious process, but you can save those over from your
to ear and get them to rebloom so after the
holidays we can talk about what to do with it.

Speaker 1 (19:12):
Yeah, I feel like we've had calperwhites.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
Too, are super easy, especially if you have kiddo's. That's
a really fun one.

Speaker 3 (19:17):
You can put it in a jar with some stones
and some water and they they bloom out really quickly.

Speaker 1 (19:22):
We've had some calls over the years for m RLS
folks asking about or was that.

Speaker 2 (19:27):
Yeah, there's a process to get it. It needs a dorm,
it needs a rest.

Speaker 3 (19:30):
Okay, so you got a kind of there's a calendar
thing that you do this to it then and then
that to it at that time. But it's they're they're
pretty easy to get to reflower every year and they
get bigger and bigger and then they start putting off
little baby ones bublits.

Speaker 1 (19:48):
I used to take those to mine.

Speaker 3 (19:50):
I used to take them to my mom and she'd
plant them in her garden in Florida.

Speaker 1 (19:53):
Oh how cool is that?

Speaker 3 (19:54):
Because they're you know, because they're tropical ish. I think
it's a garden plant and in Florida, which is so weird.

Speaker 2 (20:02):
It's like like elephant ears grow in the ditches.

Speaker 1 (20:05):
One in Florida it's how cool is that? Look at
that one thing too. I was going to ask you
about and I don't know why I didn't ask you
earlier as I look at the snow on the ground,
which means a lot of things are covered, which means
birds and other things that are calling a season.

Speaker 3 (20:19):
Keep your feeters clean. It's cold too, so you know,
clean them out every couple of weeks. Make sure you
have fresh seed. If you get you know, more quality seed,
you won't have as much mess.

Speaker 2 (20:33):
There are a number of.

Speaker 3 (20:36):
Sort of low mechanics feeders that will discourage squirrels, and
they have like you know, the weight sort of pulls
the cage down and then the feeding ports are blocked,
but their birds are okay, or you can do baffles
birds like a source of water. Water is kind of
scarce at this time of the year because everything's frozen.
Just remember you're gonna have to sort of change that

(20:57):
out every day.

Speaker 2 (20:59):
And a little bit of shelter.

Speaker 3 (21:01):
So next year, when you're considering what you want to
plant in your yard, as far as maybe shrubs or
that kind of thing, think about putting a few near
where your bird feeders are because a lot of times
you'll see birds go from the feeder to the tree
from the feed you know, back and forth because because
they're looking for cover and safety from predators.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
It's a dangerous world out there for the birds. You
want to make sure you're keeping them safe and keeping
them fed. And if you are something that wants to
have a beautiful winter and have them great visitors, put
out some food, keep their water clean, and they will
love you for generations to come. It's a great day
