joining us in studio is Lisa Briggs from the Bruce Company. Lisa,
how you doing this morning?
Speaker 2 (00:30):
I'm good, Sean, how are you?
Speaker 1 (00:31):
I'm doing great. You could tell I either got in
a fight with a cat or raspberry bushes. You want
to guess which it was.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
I'm guessing raspberry, which is a raspberry bushes?
Speaker 1 (00:41):
They are I love ours. We've talked about these on
the show before. I love them. But they've got the
and do they make ones without the little old.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
There are some thorns varieties. They're sort of developed for
a company that hybridizes fruit for pots.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
Okay, so because they've got the worst thorns, like I
don't mind like big thorns. There's just like those little
tiny Yeah, there's a little tiny ones.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
He just sort of they just get they're brambly. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
Oh good, yeah, good word, Lisa.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
You're always great for the first word of the day. Bramble, bramble.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
That's new vocabulary. Also, speaking of Lisa's expertise, it's a
fantastic time. If you've got a question for Lisa, we'd
love to have you join us this morning. Gets you
on the air six O eight three two one thirteen ten.
That's six O eight three two one thirteen ten. Gets
you on there at least breaks from the Bruce Company
and a great day. Also stopping in right of twenty
at thirty Parma Street. That's twenty at thirty Parment Street.
All sorts of cool stuff going on. Also got some
(01:36):
tips for you this morning, some other good stuff we
talk about happening at the Bruce Company. But before that,
weather matters this time of year, as all.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Yeah it doesn't. It's cooler this week.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
Yes, yeah, comfortable eighty five on Wednesday, but otherwise looks
that's kind of the outlier. Wow, that is yep, that
is interesting, very much.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Not tomato ripening weather, Sorry, folks, I have some one
of our guys, actually, the guy who runs the warehouse,
he did some hydroponic tomatoes, some cherry tomatoes, and so
his are almost ripe. I think he's going to win
the prize for earliest tomato. Yeah, yeah, all every couple
(02:15):
of days, Jim comes in with his phone and says, tomatoes.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
By the way, did I ask you? Does this Canadian
wildfire smoke? Does it affect crop gardening it like our
plants or anything at all? Or is it?
Speaker 2 (02:28):
I don't know, I was. I heard that they were
doing a study on it. It does sort of a
lot of people can't be outside and working in their garden,
so that certainly is going to have some effect if
you're bothered by the smoke. And they say that the
effect lasts long after the smoke sort of passes over,
receds or whatever.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
But I was listening to one of the meteorologists over
the weekend talk about the smoke, and a lot of
folks are like, you know, obviously, with the weather, we're
fairly decent, not always, but fairly decent about prediction. Apparently,
wildfire smoke is very hard to predict where it's going
to end up and how thick it's going to be.
And I, yeah, I was wondering about that. With plants,
(03:10):
it's like, does it think my tomato is gonna have
a nice extra smoky flavor this day? Because that may
be something. We may have something there now. So but yeah,
you're right about the breathing. And that's I know for
folks that I have very mild asthma. And I could
really tell over the week and a couple of times.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
Some of our staff to get that, yeah, because they're
working outside all day.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
So it's, uh, it's something that's half the past few
years we've just kind of had to had to endure through.
But it's always fun to you know, we think about
spending time out in the yard, out in the garden,
and you know, I think we wait, you know, how
many months out of the air, eleven months out of
there just released. It's more less than that, but just
to get out and do this stuff. And I you know,
(03:52):
I hear what I'm out working in the in the
yard and the garden. I hear everybody around the block
doing the same thing. So I guess and the store
has got to be hopping right now.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
The stor has happen. Yeah, it's because there's so many
things to do. I spent the weekend. I've got like
eight you can't really call them rock beds, but they're rocks,
and every couple of years I have to pick them
all up and then lay them back in because they
get schmutz in there, right. Yes, So it was a
pretty you know, low energy kind of task. Yeah, but yeah,
(04:23):
the store is busy because everybody's got projects that they're doing.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
It and it's it's a fun and I always like
just kind of showing up and just seeing what's going
on with the Bruce company.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Yeah, it looks great. So much color is yeah, really
some really cool shrubs and trees are in the great looking.
All the perennials some fabulous, especially some really good natives
that we don't usually have. So if you're looking to
do sort of a native garden or something for pollinators,
those are really good choices the natives, because you don't
(04:54):
have to worry about whether the pollen is accessible or
sometimes it's there's not as much from some of the cultivars.
So and then of course the the A Treuman Greenhouse
are just like it's just like technicolor sort of like
you know, Dorothy, it's.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
Just suddenly what the white happens, goes from black and
white to color and beauty and just one second wait.
I know obviously you're you're very busy and working really hard.
Do you ever get a chance though that just kind
of like in the morning, like before the door is.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Open, Oh, that's my favorite time. But because I'm here today,
but the rest of the days, I usually start between
seven and seven thirty, and this store doesn't open till
nine right now, and so it's just no one else
comes in. Sometimes some office staff are there, but in
the store until Mary Beth comes in at like eight thirty,
there is nobody there. So yeah, wander through, take some pictures.
(05:51):
It's so quiet. Sometimes the sprinklers are still running out time.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
That is that that's you know, that's we think about,
you know that, and it's good for I know, there's
there's you know, research are things, but the reality is
even without there, you know, just kind of happen.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
It's like a really calm kind of grounding place that
early in the morning.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
And you can do that to your yard too. You
can make it, you can backyard, you're grounding home place,
and I was gonna ask you too. I know there's
a bunch of stuff on the calendar, specifically as we're
talking about different events and different things going to the
first company, it's been the second third year you guys
bring and this is the second year, second year bring
in the beautiful and we're talking classic classic cars.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
Yeah. So one of our hr people they belonged to
and her husband to a Model A. I think last
year I kept saying it was Model T, but it's not.
It's Model A. They belonged to a Model A club,
a local one. And so last year they came out
and hung around in the parking lot for a few hours.
And you know, the cars are amazing. They're beautifully restored.
(06:57):
And last year I think there were maybe fifteen or
so of them, And so they kind of, like I said,
they come and hang out at the end of the
parking lot and line up. Folks can go and check
them out and talk to the owners. And it's a
pretty low key thing but really fun. And also so
they're gonna be here Sunday from eleven to two and
(07:22):
then also the puppies are going to be wait why yeah,
FETs is going to be here again. They come every
month and they're going to be here from noon to
two puppies and they they're all they're they're all ready
to arrange adoptions. And yeah, so you know, because if
you know, I have a big old cat who I
(07:45):
dearly love and he's kind of fussy because he's old. Yeah,
if I was going to bring a dog back into
our life, we always had golden retrievers. I would want
something enormous, like a like a wolfhound or a deer hound.
So yeah, there's awfully cute. The puppies. Harvey does those
rescues for the beagle, that Beagle Rescue and the same thing.
(08:05):
Do not bring home a bogle.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
They manipulate you though they've they've got they've got true eyes.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
Yes, yeah, those eyes right.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
Yes they do, yes, they do. Talk this morning with
Lisa Briggs for the Bruce Company. If you've got a
question for Lisa loved, have you joined us this morning
Dolphin number six O eight three two one thirteen ten.
That's six O eight three two one thirteen ten talking
about the events going on with the Bruce Company. Don't
forget you can always follow along on Facebook as well
as their regular web page, which is Bruce Company dot com.
Speaking of great things going on with the Bruce Company.
(08:33):
We started talking for folks that obviously before we come
on there at least and I have little chat about
things going on at the Bruce Company. And typically I
get a chance to kind of job each and every
evening we talk about specials and other things. I'll jot
them all down. It got a little long. There's a
lot of really cool opportunities and specials going on right
now at the Bruce Company, Lisa.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
There are so if you are thinking about, you know,
getting outside and enjoying the lovely weather, We've got all
kinds of things just sort of tempt you. So there's
some furniture specials we still have. We extended the twenty
percent off on Nardi, So if you're looking for a
place to sort of get the fam together and dining outside,
(09:14):
those are some really good options. It's in store, super stylish,
designed and constructed in Italy, great colors, and you can
save twenty percent on that. There's also a special on
outdoor interiors I'm sorry, outdoor great room fire tables. If
(09:35):
you buy a fire table, you get a free wind
guard and cover. Nice and if you're looking for something
that is a little more heirloom quality. You can save
twenty five percent on the Castel, which is one of
our higher end lines, on all the new special orders,
and that runs until the fourteenth, so through the end
(09:56):
of the week, So if you want to take advantage
of that, come on in. There's also a little special
on solo stoves. Sols are super fun, yes, and the
big daddy is that we have a special buy on
the Weber griddles, the twenty eight inch standalone griddles. And
if you purchase a griddle, yeah, you get one hundred
(10:18):
and fifty dollars gift card. Wow, and you can use
that for accessories or you know, other things to augment
your your outdoor living space. But those griddles are really fun.
I can cook everything on them.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
I'm always very jealous. My brother's got a beautiful one,
and it's like you just and like, Weber the best
in the business. You got you gotta win win right there.
And then you think, get a nice griddle, get yourself
some nice patio furniture, a smokeless fire pit.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
And yeah, you can hang out all summer. You may
hope needs a vacation, so you get a staycasis exactly.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
And as you're talking about some of this stuff too, Lisa,
what is coming up this weekend? I feel like there's
an event coming up this weekend? Father?
Speaker 2 (11:03):
Oh that thing?
Speaker 1 (11:04):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (11:05):
Is there something like like a day devoted to dad?
Speaker 1 (11:09):
You know, maybe it would be.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
A great gift for your dad because you could get
the griddle and then give him the gift card and
then he could go get oh the you know, the
smash burg smasher and all that kind of stuff.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
So could let's just say, if Christina's my wife is
listening this morning, if she was listening, let's say she
were to get me a beautiful new griddle one hundred
dollar fifty dollars gift card. Could she if just entice
her little? Could she use that one hundred and fifty
dollars on something for herself?
Speaker 2 (11:43):
No one's judging Christina.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
Just if just just if anybody's thinking that way, just
an idea, just is with that tout Lee says, we
as we think about extending and spending time outdoors, and
I know one of the great things, obviously is this
time of year, really get what a great area to
have if you've got that space and really kind of
(12:09):
livening your your outdoor furniture and patio set up. We
talked to you mentioned some of the brands to carry
and some of them on special at the Bruce Company.
As far as furniture outdoor furniture, one of the things
that that I always love about the Bruce Company is
the quality of everything is. Obviously there's different levels, different designs,
but the quality is the kind of the joining factor
(12:31):
of them all is it's all very We're not talking
about stuff that you're going to use for a summer
or two and then end up in a landfill. We're
talking about things that you're going to have for some
cases generations, just really really good stuff. You guys spend
a lot of time finding the right products and working
on finding that just the perfect fit for you for
your patio furniture.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
Don't you. Yeah, and you know these aren't like eight
dollars chairs for sure, not going to say that they are,
but they have have warranties for fading and for staining
and that kind of thing, and they're super comfortable. Yeah. So,
and then of course you go all the way to
the other end where you're looking at like Castel and Jensen,
(13:13):
who does the the wood furniture beautifully made, incredible details.
Just come in and ask me to show you all
the features of the there's a Jensen sectional. I geek out.
There's like a dozen things I could show you that
you would not know it's just looking at it. Yeah,
but then you say, wow, somebody spent some real time
(13:35):
and the the quality of the joinery, and it's just
it's amazing the.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
Design and the features and it's yeah, sure and you
mentioned too that And I think what's what's really impressive
is a lot of this stuff. And I think the
best they always talk about, like the best design is
things that you don't see at, things you don't even
think about. Is because it's just it's just there's just
part of it.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
And I don't know. Maybe it's because I've I've gotten
involved in city stuff, but like I'll drive around on
like trash day and I'll see like a lot of
those flimsy like chairs out there. I thought, why did you?
Like I always want to like put a little note
saying like you should have got some good stuff like
like and I feel like once you've experienced some.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
Of the yeah, I mean we bought we bought some
Lloyd Flanders, like years ago when we still before before
we moved to Chaboyan, and that furniture is still living
on in a house of one of Carolyn and Knicks
Price in West Virginia. Yeah, and it's twenty five years old. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:31):
See that's and that's you mentioned. I kind of like
the generational or like the the you know, always you
want to upgrade, Well you don't. The stuff isn't going
to the curb. It's going to a friend, go to
a family member. Absolutely awesome stuff. So a great day
to get on into the Bruce Company. Do that shopping again.
Great specials on some outdoor furniture. Also a lot of
great stuff going on the Bruce Company. You learn more
online the website Bruce Company dot com. That's Bruce Company
(14:52):

(15:13):
about Gail's tip of the week involving fertilizer. We'll get that,
we'll take your calls. We'll do that all next as
every Day Outdoor Living with the Bruce Company continues right
here on thirteen ten wib I eight twenty three thirteen
ten WIBA and every Day Outdoor Living brought to you
by the Bruce Company online Bruce Company dot com. All
one word Bruce Company dot com. Great day to check
out the Bruce Company. Even better, get on in right
(15:35):
at the Middleton Garden Center twenty eight thirty Partment Street.
That's twenty at thirty Partment Street. Mentioned the website Bruce
Company dot com. They're also on Facebook and other social
media including Pinterest and Instagram. You can find them there
as well. And Lisa, I know. One of the great
things about the Bruce Companies, of course we take calls
and people get questions. They can also email plant desk
at Bruce Company dot com. There's a lot of great
information available to folks at the Bruce Company. With are
(15:57):
stopping in email and calling on all that uff. Another
cool thing that folks may not know about the Bruce
Company is, I think it's been a while, but I
know you've talked about the years of experience and when
it comes to gardening knowledge and other things at the
Bruce Company, a pretty substantial group of people you have
at the Bruce Company really helping people answer questions. And
(16:18):
sometimes there's things that should be highlighted, tips and other
things that need to be highlighted. And one of those
areas is when it comes to fertilization and this type
time of year, of course, we're all really wondering about
our soil quality and our plant quality, and fertilization is
something you want to want to be paying attention to,
(16:38):
isn't it.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
For sure? Now you mentioned people assume I know everything
and I do it. I do not. But I have
a huge, like an amazing team, and I think I
counted a couple of years ago and there was like
over three hundred years of combined industry experience on our
teams in the garden center. And one of the biggest
assets is she's been in the business for a long time,
(17:03):
been at Bruce Company for a gazillion years, and she
has amazing knowledge about about birding and plant stuff, a
lot of a lot. She's my go to for questions
about treatments, and so she's been giving me some tips.
(17:24):
Will call them Gales tips, Gales guidance. There you go.
And so what she wanted me to talk about today
was about fertilizing. And so, you know a lot of
people have purchased new plants and they're wondering about what
kind of fertilizing they should do. So we thought we'd
(17:44):
just go through that really quickly. So if you're planting
new trees and shrubs, it's not a great time to
fertilize those things. To get them to establish a little
more efficiently, there's a product called root Stimulator that it
does just that stimulates root development, so it gets plants established.
If you've got say, flowering shrubs like roses or that
(18:08):
kind of thing, there is a fabulous product called All
in one Rose and Flower Care. It's really good for
any flowering shrubs and also perennials. The good thing about it,
besides fertilizing, it also has an insecticide in it. So
if you're you know, on pins and needles waiting for
the Japanese beetles to show up. It will be help
with that if you are like me and your ponies
(18:31):
had not last year because it was pretty dry after
the spring, but the year before we had a lot
of powdery milde. So that's a fungal disease. It also
helps it has a fungicide in it, so that helps
to prevent against not only is it feeding your plant,
but it's also protecting it from insect and disease damage.
(18:55):
If we're talking about annuals, and that's what everybody is
super focused on this die of year. So when the
growers are growing those in the greenhouse, they put in
a slow release fertilizer.
Speaker 1 (19:09):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
A lot of times people will come and they'll say, oh,
there are you know, insect eggs on my pot. That's
not Those are the husks from the fertilizer. And that
stuff lasts oh anywhere from six to eight weeks. So
if you think about that stuff being you know, started
from cuttings way back, that it's time to fertilize. Okay,
(19:32):
So keep your annuals like really healthy and flowering and
big and lush and beautiful. That is something that you
do need to regulately fertilize and so you can. My
recommend the easiest is a water soluble fertilizer like Miracle
Grow or Jacks or Peters. Those are all super effective.
Everybody has their favorite, and you just want to use
(19:53):
one that's formulated for flowering or it's something that's going
to increase blooms. Just look for those kinds of keywords
on the packaging.
Speaker 1 (20:02):
Do we run into trouble sometimes of like overloving our
plants where we had a call I think it was
last week about somebody maybe a little too much watering
of the of the stuff. Yeah, so those were fertilized something.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
Yeah, absolutely, And anybody who's ever seen someone with those
stripes in their lawn knows what happens when you like
don't dial your spreader properly, or you're overlapping your rose
and you're double downing on those edges. Too much fertilizer
can certainly damage the plant. So I would say follow
(20:33):
package instructions. I don't have them all memorized. So it
falls on peeps on gardeners to sort of open up
that little pamphlet on the back and read about what
the application rates are and what it's suitable for what
it can do, what it can't do, all that kind
of stuff.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
You mentioned. P andes.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
By the way, they're blooming now right time. Gorgeous they
are because they like this cooler weather. Oh well, the
flowers don't blow open as fast when it's not so hot.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
Did you have a tip the other week for keeping
them up right? Was that a because they always seem
to Yeah.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
I'd like to grow through grid hoops the best. That's
what I use. But really, if you don't have those
in now, it's too late. Those really when they first
start to come up, Yeah, I lay the grids on
the ground and when they get when they get taller,
then I add the legs and pull them up. But
they're really great about keeping not only keeping them from
(21:33):
flopping onto the ground, but they also keep the flowers
from flopping over the sides of the pe andy cages.
If you have flopping one. They do have like half
hoops on legs that you can sort of put one
on one side of the plant and then one on
the other side of the plant. That because even peony
(21:54):
cages you wouldn't be able to get on. Now, not
why they're flowering, you're gonna. Yeah, these are that has
to be done early.
Speaker 1 (22:02):
These are those lessons that you give us months ahead
of time, and sometimes we forget to do those things.
Then we say, Lisa, what can.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
Yeah, there are options like those. The half hoops are
really good.
Speaker 1 (22:13):
Oh, fantastic. So there's there's eyes and speaking of like, yeah,
I know there's a lot of stuff blooming right now,
and those somethings like with paeonies, you can can you
start cutting some of those off and start putting some
flowers in the house for sure, the plant at all And.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
No, no, because as they as they finish up, you
want to remove those seed heads anyway. So if you've
got an abundance, you might as well bring them in
enjoy them in the house. Pe Andy flowers last a
long time in the house. Oh do they?
Speaker 1 (22:40):
Yes, we've got a few in the Christina's got them
like a little reel burrow thing.
Speaker 2 (22:44):
That's its stuff.
Speaker 1 (22:45):
And I know it's very very it works. It works
with it's I always love and I've told this story before,
and something I love about gardeners is I see, like
my wife and I was just like, it's such a
and we kind of talked about this earlier about that
kind of that moment before the doors will open at
the store, and it's kind of it's it's very there's
something very therapeutic about doing it. Like I always feel
like like people like there their happiest when they're when
(23:08):
they're tending to their guarden and just kind of not
just looking at it, but like taking care of it.
Speaker 2 (23:12):
They're even just looking at it too, even just looking
at it. I think Garden Meditation Day is coming up
this month.
Speaker 1 (23:20):
Oh is it really?
Speaker 2 (23:20):
I think it is sometime in June. And uh, even
just being in there, it's it's like I said earlier,
it's very grounding. Yeah, to sort of sit there, you
listen to the birds, You smell the you know, the
fragrance of flowers around the wind. You know, if it's
a little breezy, you're listening to the leaves.
Speaker 1 (23:40):
Rustle the wind in the willows.
Speaker 2 (23:42):
Yeah, mister toad, I don't think there's a mister frog.
Speaker 1 (23:49):
They're probably not. It's a senior frogs. I say that
they're bar chain and Mexican. By the way, the frogs
sound beautiful this time of year too. Speaking of if
you've got a great pond or anything where you get
the frogs in the wild real quickly. So before we
wrap this week, you mentioned the Fetch Fetch Wisconsin Rescue.
(24:12):
Every year the Bruce Company, you guys choose use the local.
Speaker 2 (24:15):
Charity to work with them. This year we're working with Fetch.
Speaker 1 (24:17):
And let's talk about Fetch real quick.
Speaker 2 (24:19):
Fetch is a rehab and rehoming. They don't have a shelter.
All of the dogs that they rescue are fostered, so
they have a team of foster's. There's not really a
facility where you can go and look at the dog,
you know, like look at a bunch of dogs. So
(24:39):
they're very careful about making sure that the dogs are
matched with forever homes because that's what they want is
they want to give a place, you know, a new
place for a puppy to you know, to live its
life and to have a family that's that's suitable. Yeah,
and so there are great organization so they do adoption
(25:03):
kind of events. Is not like the kind of adoption
necessarily where you're going to go in and then go
