That's twenty eight thirty Parmt Street. Also a great day.

(00:21):
here with us. All you gotta do is dial in.
We'll get you right on the air. Six oh eight
three two one thirteen ten. That's three two one thirteen tenth.
He saw how you doing today?
Speaker 2 (00:29):
I'm good?
Speaker 1 (00:29):
How are you great? Good to see you. And uh
just heard you mentioned fall events. Yeah. Is that always
weird when you hear yourself, It is weird.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
I try not to listen to myself, honestly. Oh I'd
love to do something in Linda'll say, let's listen. I'm like, okay,
like you're a little kid.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Somebody asked me and and I think I know the answer.
But somebody had said, does Lisa have a media background?
I said, I don't think I do. Not you're just
hard school. Okay, I didn't think so, but I'm like, like,
I think she's just kind of good at one.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
I'm just a little fearless.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
That's probably a lot of it is, like, yeah, you're
I think so. I think a shy person, which is
why I love hanging out with each and every week
as I know anything coming your way atcha, yeah, exactly. Hey,
speaking of bold, what a forecast? This is goodness that
those fall temperatures have. Yeah, now I'm.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Gonna like knock on some wood. Okay, I'm hoping this
is for a wood ter trim on this desk. But honestly,
you know, usually the first week of school it's like
one hundred and fifty degrees and it wasn't this year. No,
And if you know, I liked last week with lovely
highs in the seventies. But this isn't terrible. It's not terrible.
(01:46):
It's just when you're you know, when you're doing the transition,
when we're doing the stores transition and you're doing holiday
stuff and it's ninety degrees out, people complain it's too hot. Yeah,
it's like, okay, the March forward does not care about
the temperature.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
No, no, and and week in and week out, it's
gonna vary, and especially in Wisconsin this time of year,
we're just you know, next week, it could you know,
we could know. I don't see anything to say that,
but you know, you know, yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
I don't think that's gonna happen. But yeah, if it does,
it won't stick because the ground is warm.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
And we'll talk about since the ground is warm, there
are some opportunities there and we'll talk with Lisa about that. Also,
speaking of things going on at the Bruce Company, tis
the season to start thinking fall first? Of course, got
Halloween and other things going on. You've got fun contest
going on, the Charlie Shortino but it's great.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
It's we call it it's our Great Pumpkins.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
You know.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
So Charlie Shortino has been along with a friend of
his his name is Clint and then the president of
the Bruce Company, Steh Nicholson. They grow giant pumpkins for competitions.
I don't know how they got into it, but they do.
They partner with Purple Cow and they order seeds on auction.
(03:06):
And so this year's pumpkin stopped growing. Yeah, okay, okay,
so it's not going to be competition weight, and usually
we see it sort of early to mid October after
it does all the weigh ins and that kind of thing.
And since it stopped growing, it's not going to be
(03:28):
close or to be a contender, so they harvested it
early and it's now in the front of the store
nice and it's still big, and so we have a
guest the weight contest. You can do it in store,
there's a jar and ballots at the plant desk, or
you can also do it on Facebook. Prices right rules.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
You mentioned it's big. I see on the Facebook video
it's so big that it requires a palette and a
front end loader to move it around.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
Yes, Raleigh took off the truck and then set it
on the palletts up front, and it was it was
a production.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
So I see you out there.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
So you know, only a couple people in the store
know how much it's waited, so no one's going to
give you any clues. But like I said, prices right rules,
first closest without going.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Over fifty Garden Center give.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Yeah, yeah, one for the in store and then one
for the Facebook. Fantastic two of them, so we have
two shot two chances to.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Win on Facebook Thiever's company even.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Better, comment your weight or if you're in the store,
which we'd love to see, you just get a ballot
from the plant from the plant dusk folks, and uh
you can go from there.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
And and for people that are wondering like growing giant
pumpkins is it's it's not just like luck. There's a
lot of work and uh generational stuff now yeah, pumpkin generational.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Yeah, not human generational. So my understanding is a buy
these on auctions. So the pumpkins that are really big
and are officially really big meaning they've been in a
way off and it's documented, then they auction off those
seeds because it's not certain varieties of pumpkins that can
get that big. And then there's a big fertilization program
(05:19):
and they have a camera on it. What did he
tell me? It was growing like some absurd amount of
pounds a day. But they can measure it because they
can watch it. They have a twenty four hour km
pumpkin watch.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
Oh my goodness, So check that out. It's impressive to
see as well, and a chance to see it in person.
Chance to win a fifty dollars garden Center gift card online.
You can see the videos. Of course, enter there as well. Yeah,
Bruce Companies Facebook page, check them out online. Speaking of
checking things out online, I know you have a bunch
of events coming up.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
We do, and some.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
Opportunities for folks that want to participate.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Yeah, so there's we scheduled a couple of succulent workshops.
One is on Saturday, this coming Saturday, the twentieth, at eleven,
and the second one is on Tuesday evening, not tomorrow,
next week, the twenty third, from five to six. So
you can go to our website and sign up for
those and we'll send you an acknowledgment. Also, our collector's
(06:20):
event for holiday is usually on Thursday, but I'm going
to be out of town with the furniture team, so
I've postponed it to Sunday, the twenty first, oh from
noon until four. Oh.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
That should be a good event. That should be fun.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Be fun.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
Does a potato count as a tuber?
Speaker 2 (06:37):
By the way, the potato is a tuber?
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Truly a tuber. Okay. I saw that you guys had
a something and mentioned tubers. I know we've talked about tubers.
Are we talking about potatoes and.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Other well, so they're very So they're babs, corms, rhizomes,
and tubers, okay, and they have botanical differences, okay. So
a something where the plant is inside of it. So
if you think about when you slice an onion or
a garlic clove, the plant comes from the center of that.
(07:09):
So that's a true ball. But even though we call
them all bulbs, tubers have their buds on the outside
like potato or a dhalia oh okay, okay, or I
think that daylilies are considered tubers, so they're kind of hanging.
Rhizomes are iris, okay. And then corms are small bulbs
(07:29):
like crocus. A crocus is a corn.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
I'm gonna forget much of this, I know, Okay. What's
great about forgetting things like this is like in a
week or two I'll bring this up again.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
Answer like I'd never heard the question before.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
Would that be like a potato?
Speaker 2 (07:48):
Yes, So most fall bulbs are either bulbs or corms
or rhizomes. I can't and I could be wrong. I
can't think of any that are rhizomes that well. We
do have some iris, some bare root iris, but a lot.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
So and it's on the bulb conversation. Ground is warm,
ground is soft.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
It's a little early to be planting bulbs. So your
spring blooming bulbs you sort of plant after your summer
blooming bulbs have been lifted.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
Did their thing?
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Yes, So after the first frost, okay, because you don't
want the ground to be so warm that it pushes
that young plant. Oh that that starts growing, but you
want it to not be so cold that the roots
don't start growing. So generally after the first frost, the
ground starts to cool. There's plenty of time for some
(08:40):
roots to establish, so the thing doesn't get heaved out
of the ground. If we have a freeze law process,
and then that will that will keep the young plant dormant.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
And speaking of time, that means there's time to pick
up bulbs for.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
Sure, because they come in about this time. I think
we probably have about a third of our bulbs in.
There's a small uttering of some different things, and if
you buy them now. There are a couple of exceptions
of things that you should plant now, but for the
most part you're going to store them in a cool,
dry place and then once the ground starts are cool,
(09:14):
So after the first frost. You can then go outside
and plant them.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
Get that going, and we'll remind you right here on
the shop. Yes, well, of course we ever have questions,
you can stop on in. They'd love to see Middleton
Gardens at the Risk Company twenty eight to thirty Parliament
or Street. That's twenty at thirty Parimenter Street. Great day
to get on in. Of course they've got the contest
going on online. If you want to guess the weight,
you can also do that of the pumpkin and store
as well. We can do both for both. Chance don't
well could you imagine, Oh my goodness, somebody doesn't both
(09:41):
they could win? Could they win both or there?
Speaker 2 (09:45):
I think we probably wouldn't. I think there would be
enough that you wouldn't that would be unlikely. Yes, well,
and we do have to sort them all for the
proper weight. Oh man, right, you know, so it's not
like we're just going to randomly drop.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
Yeah, we've got to like sort them out, separate them out.
I always wanted like with that, like how many of
you guys get and fun story My mom actually, when
she was a young girl, want a horse named jelly Bean.
By guessing how many jelly beans were in a jar. Nice.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
Did she have the wherewithal to keep a horse? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (10:17):
Sure, yeah they they lived dow on a fireman.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
Oh that's cool.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
How nice that you living suburban.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
Back That would be the most disappointing thing ever.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Yes, the little girl you went a horse.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
And your parents are no thing is not living in
the backyard.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
Oh my goodness. Yeah, no, that's and and so with
this with the with of course fall coming and uh
you know felt last week like it was here. What
about things like and I know the equinox I think.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
It is twenty seconds.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
Okay, So so are the things we can be doing well?
Speaker 2 (10:52):
For sure, you can be planting, yeah, just not just
hold off on the bulbs.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
So there's plenty of time with the warm ground to
play perennials, to plant shrubs, to plant, to plant trees,
all that kind of thing. Right now, perennials are twenty
percent off. Nice nursery stock meaning trees, shrubs, and evergreens
are forty percent off. But if you buy three or
more of a combination of those, uh you say, fifty
(11:19):
percent on all three or as many as you buy.
So that's kind of cool.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
Really good, really good opportunity there. Great opportunities is always
at the Bruce Company. Great day to get on in
built the guards at the Bruce Company right at twenty
eight thirty Parmtter Street. That's twenty eight thirty Partment Street.

website to Brucecompany dot com. That's Bruce Company dot Com,
Facebook and social media. The Bruce Company even better, get
on in today the Middleton Gardens at the Briers Company,
twenty eight thirty parm registratet. That's twenty eight thirty part registrate.
You had visitors over the weekend. I saw it, did
(12:26):
did I see?
Speaker 2 (12:27):
I don't want to brought us a surprise?
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Yeah? What, I don't want to spoil it. You you
tell everybody what so?
Speaker 2 (12:32):
So Diane from whose Woods which they they're a raptor center,
so she her mission is education. She also rehabilitates and
then releases raptors. But she has some that are just
not releasable for you know, either they're they're not well
enough to fend for themselves or they've been imprinted on
(12:55):
humans too much. So she comes a couple times a
year and she does a little presentation. It's super popular
and she usually brings some owls, which she did. She
brought two screech owls, Ned and Blinky, and a very
vocal and charismatic bard, all named Clark. But she also
(13:21):
brought a golden eagle.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
Oh my goodness, I saw that it was beautiful.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
Well, Paha is his name? Oh, so and then she
just talks about you know, how raptors feed and different
different things about their physiology, and she's just really informative
and very engaging and we always have a really good time.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
It's such a cool She's been down to our library
down and ed.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
She does a lot of things at schools and libraries,
and yes.
Speaker 1 (13:53):
She's amazing and people and you mentioned it gets a
good turnout. People love seeing the raptors and love well, they're.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
Kind of mysterious, right, but to be to see an eagle,
albeit a golden eagle and not a bald, but he
was beautiful.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
He's huge too, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
I think she said like twelve pounds. There's video on
the Facebook with sound on Facebook and she said how
much you weighed?
Speaker 1 (14:17):
But definitely check that out. And again while you're on
the Facebook now, like, can you watch a cool video
you can guess the weight of the giant pumpkin on
price book as well. I was going to ask you too,
as we kind of as talking to morning Lee Sprinks
from the Roost Company, as folks are are looking, uh,
you know, maybe it's Jahasta's getting out of control and
those type of things. Is this the time of here
to start separating that type of stuff for.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
You can do divisions of things that not everything, but
certainly hasa's Daily's Siberian or Japanese iris. You can go
ahead and do that. Make sure your shovels sharp though,
especially at this time of year, and then I would
definitely use a root stimulator.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
Get them going in the news, just to get the.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
Yeah, to get the roots rea growing, and to help
heal the damage that you're doing by cutting them into bits.
Speaker 1 (15:05):
It's like a nice little welcome home to for the yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
Yeah. It's always good to when you're planting, when you're
replanting things or moving things around, to use the root stimulator,
especially now because the time that the plants have to
grow enough fruits to really establish firmly is shortening. So
and we can have one that's called root Stimulators by
(15:31):
Boone Eyed. We our crews use it whenever we're doing planting,
so we's it's a very good product. And if you
do buy it and use it and you've got some left,
just make sure that you store it inside. You don't
want it to freestaw, and then you can use it
again next spring for everything you're planting.
Speaker 1 (15:48):
Next year, you know, and the people from Bear could
take a note from the root Stimulator because Bear has
like all the weird.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
Now Bear is called BioAdvance.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
Oh, bio Advance. But they still use.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
Like weed, We still use the.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
Eight and seven and the right am I thinking of
that beer?
Speaker 2 (16:03):
I don't. I don't know if eight and I don't
know who makes but they But but Bear or Bio
Advanced also makes some excellent products there. They're year round.
Uh uh, what's it? Tree and shrub protect and feed.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
It's got a long name.
Speaker 2 (16:24):
I know, it's done, a very long name. But that's
what you use if you've got boring insects. That and
not like they make you yawn, but like they colonize
your plants.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
That your ear off a little beetle and.
Speaker 2 (16:45):
Be quiet.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
My god, this is a silly, silly prop today.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Yeah, but they their names are not as sainct or
you know, evocative.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
Well, what about like and like the ones like the
sevens and the eights? Who makes those? Because that also
always is I.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
Can't remember who who makes those? Okay, I don't, because
there's several, like there's Ortho, there's there's several companies. Okay,
that make different products. Okay, I don't know who makes it, Okay,
off the top of my head, because like hippie bonut,
I don't.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
Know, Okay. Always like I know what you need.
Speaker 2 (17:23):
To douce a job, I don't always know who the
actual manufacturer.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
Is of the product. Yeah, you know the important part
of it. Yeah, that's exactly.
Speaker 2 (17:33):
Those are the things that my brain says, you don't
need to make that.
Speaker 1 (17:38):
This morning with Lisa Briggs from the Bruce Company online
Bruce Company dot com all one word Bruce Company dot com,
Facebook and social media the Bruce Company. What a fantastic
day to get on in to the Middleton Garden center
of the Bruce Company, and we started this week's conversation
talking about the weather and the holidays and the impending
snow and winter. We'll get here and so will Christmas.
In the holiday season. You do have some old world's.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
Old World is up inga is almost all up. I
want to finish that today started to move in the collectibles.
So that's like the little paper mache santis from Germany
or candle spinners, that kind of thing. That stuff should
all be out by the end of the week, I
hope and there are also three trees on board for
(18:23):
this week.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
Oh really, but it's going to be.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
Slow at the beginning of the at the middle part
of the week because I'll be out with the furniture team,
so they're going to carry on in my in my absence.
But I don't I don't know. I think I don't
think it'll be as fast.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
They're still finer furniture for folks looking.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
To Absolutely there are still really good byes on discontinued
things and floor models that we are releasing. So step
in and talk to the furniture folks. What would be
something home today that day and enjoy it.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
We would be ideal as if all the furniture could
be sold before Lee sickets men.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
No, no, no, no, no, oh, not all of it, just
because I use of it. I use a lot of
it from the looks, not all of it, a lot
of it, some of it. But if all of it's sold,
I'd be okay with that too. But I just Christmas
wouldn't look exactly the same. No tables to put like
table runners or candlesticks. Oh well, I'm not trying to
(19:23):
be selfish, but honestly, yes, if.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
You can get a few if you want to get
it's a great day to get on into the.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
Middle There's some good stuff with and some really good pricing,
so stop in and take a look.
Speaker 1 (19:34):
And that's cool thing too. You mentioned the quality of
the stuff as well as you're not going to beat
the quality overall, and then you start getting opportunities to
save some money. It's yeah, it's a great, great win.
It's always a great day, get on in the Middleton garden.
So Bruce Company right at twenty eight thirty Paramor Street.
That's twenty eight thirty par Mentor Street. Online, Bruce Company
dot com, Bruce Company dot com, Facebook and social media,
(19:54):
the Bruce Company. I did want to ask you, and
I don't know why to slip my mind. We're talking
about roots, stimulators, trees and shrub yeah those right now.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
Yeah, Yeah, it's good weather as long the ground is
still warm and you know, the forecast looks great, So
go ahead, and if you have a space in your garden,
there's still time to do some some cool weather vegetables
or little tiny root crops like little carrots or radishes,
baby beets, that kind of thing. Certainly all the greens,
(20:22):
spinach and lettuce, you can get a late summer harvest
on that kind of thing.
Speaker 1 (20:27):
What about my kale.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
I think if you're doing baby kale, I don't think
like you could get dinosaur kale a size in the
time of the time that we have left, But you
could certainly harvest it as baby leaves, And honestly it's
better that way anyway.
Speaker 1 (20:42):
It's a little more compact with nutrients.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
Well, it's just more tender and the cooling weather does
sort of concentrate the sugars on some of those on
some of those crops.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
Yes, today I learned.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
My job is done.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
A great day. Get on into the Middleton Guard Center store.
