Of course, Facebook and social media, the Bruce Company or

(00:22):
online Bruce Coompany dot com. That's Bruce b r Ucee
Company dot com. A lot of great stuff going on
to the Bruce Company. Great time to get into the
Bruce Company. As a matter of fact, Lisa rumor Is says,
summer is a great time to be planting. It is, indeed,
it is indeed a little bit of a what do

(00:42):
we have a little technical explosion?

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Yeah, my my, uh, earphone's just exploded, just one boomphone.
Oh how you been good than the exploding?

Speaker 1 (01:02):
Yes, well it's good to see you. And I know
there's so much stuff going on at the Bruce Company,
and uh it's just like here, yeah, some folks that
don't know. So in the studio we've got of course,
Lisa and I sit here and Katie's on the other
side of the glass, and we of course plug in
our headphones so we can hear everybody and hear our
calls and hear the beautiful beauty Beatles music and other things.

(01:24):
And literally a second before we went on there, Lisa's
got everything, some.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Little thing popped off and they just fell off my head.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
You were completely set, and then there it went, so
pieces of this then and the other thing all over
the around. Yes, yes, yes, okay, we'll Yeah, it's good
to see you. By the way, they said, we're going
to talk about some of the stuff going on at
the Bruce Company real quick. It's funny because we're we're
still in July, although August is.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Going to be here around the corner right.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
One week from today. I do believe it's the first
feels right, We're going to go with it.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
The first is Friday.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Oh, the first is Friday, Yes, oh yeah, Friday. Yeah.
The fourth that'd be one. Yeah, I'm losing my marbles here.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
Lisa's like less than a week away.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
So with that, we are still well into you know,
we've still got plenty of summer left. There's still a
lot of stuff going on. In the gardens and of
course getting ready for I'm still haven't gotten a bucket
of anybody's tomatoes yet, which I'm kind of ale early for.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Yeah, well we should see some things soon, like cherry tomatoes.
We haven't had any donations for giving gardener either, so
but I'm sure that's coming. So you know, we've been
doing this program for a few years. If you have
extra you know, zucchini or whatever.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
You're filling up with extra zucchini, Lisa, and hardly ever happens.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
But I suspect it might.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
You can drop off your extra produce and we donate
that to Way Forward Resources, which is a Middleton outreach.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
So the food goes to the into their food pantry.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
So it's rather than sneaking over to your neighbors under
the cover of darkness and leaving them on the porch,
stop in the garden center in broad daylight, Yes, with pride, Yes,
and we will thank you and give you a coupon
for a purchase, and then we will drive.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
It over to to Way Forward.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
Oh that's a great win win for everybody. Nothing worse
than it's.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Horrible to you know, to work so hard and then
throw that produce away because you can't possibly consume it all,
so let's share it with people who need it.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
Make a note as the as the gardens start to
really pop and explode with goodies. If you got extra,
get on into the Middleton Gardens with the Bruce Company
twenty at thirty Parment Street. You can make make those donations,
make those drop offs. And Lisa, looking at the forecast
shower storms, shower storms than sun sise, is.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
It like unbelievable how green everything is.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
It is?

Speaker 2 (03:56):
And usually about this time, you know, we're sort of
talking about the decision of do you keep your lawn
watered or do you let it go dormant until the
heat breaks. No crunchy grass this no crunchy grass this year.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
That is.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
We've been driving out to apt Saturday night and I
swear the corn is like eight feet.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
High ice Here's.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
Way higher than the fourth of July knee.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
I think to be using the cherry apple pickers and
cherry pickers to harvest corn this year. I think they.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
Will be it is.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
You know, ultimately, June was just a little bit above average,
so it's pretty it was pretty reasonable.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
But July, the last time I checked the.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
July was Wednesday, and we were within a couple tents
of an inch of the whole month's average. Okay, and
then that didn't account for the rainfall that we had
Tuesday night Wednesday morning, or what.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
We had on what didn't rain on Friday or Saturday?

Speaker 1 (05:00):
Probably both?

Speaker 3 (05:00):
Yeah, probably both.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
So yeah, So usually oftentimes July and August our drier,
spotty thunderstorms, and so we're talking a lot about watering,
and keep that in the back of your mind because
that may still happen.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
I don't Mother Nature's fickle, So.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
I did see I think I think it's the old
Farmer's Almanac. I know there's two separate almanacs and they
feud about who's older and who's better. But I think
Robin reported a bit on it this morning as well,
saying that warmer fall this year here in our area.
And I know there's some there's some science. It's more
than just we're going to take a guess at there's
a little bit of science. Obviously it can't be exact,

(05:40):
but does that help things like as we look to
second so and those type of things that can that.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
Help for that, it will help you'll you'll have when
you're deciding what crops you might want to put in
for that for that second sewing you have, you might
have a little more time to to things that maybe
have you know, more days from germination to maturity. Usually
we kind of look and say, okay, you want to

(06:07):
shoot for something that's about fifty five days from when
you plant it, so that you have enough time to
actually harvest. That may give you extra time for harvesting.
It's hard to say at this point if that's what
will happen, but what it will do is delay the
planting of bulbs because you really want to wait for
a good frost to do that.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
So there's you know, there are pluses and minuses to
these things.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
Okay, And by the way, if you ever have questions,
you can always join us. I feel like I always
just ask the I gobble up all the questions and
all the time. I like having folks chime in with
questions and their perspectives, and of course picking Lisa's brain.
She's a great race.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
Sharing experience sharans at.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
Sharing assurances, we'll just call it that. Sharing experiences become sharances.
I got to spare a focus called six three two
thirteen ten at six I eight three two, one thirteen
ten get you on there. Release of breaks from the
Bruce Company online, Brewcecompany dot com, Facebook, social media, the
Bruce Company. Of course, great day to get on into
the Middleton Garden Center of the Bruce Company. Twenty eight
thirty parm Interistreet. That's twenty eight thirty Partment Street. I

(07:08):
know we've been talking about the past few weeks, but
we are just moments days away from the Big Blood Drive. Still.
Do you know if there's still any openings available for that.
I haven't been.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
I haven't checked because it's being run by an outside company,
but they do. I did find out last week that
there will be space for walk ins. Oh so if
you go and it says that they're filled, you can
just you can walk in, Okay. The appointment just assures
that you have a specific time and you wouldn't have

(07:38):
to maybe wait for a little bit.

Speaker 3 (07:40):
I don't know how it works.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Pedals for a pint. I think that's very clever. Did
you come up with that least?

Speaker 3 (07:45):
I think Linda did.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
Oh, Linda, nice work, nice work.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
I think that was Linda's.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
I would I would, I would wouldn't be surprised either
if you came up with that. It's a good one. Again.
That's a great event coming up Saturday the seven a second,
excuse me from eleven until two at the Bruce Company.
All the details online and of course the Facebook page
as well for the Bruce Company. Go to the Bruce
Company on your Facebook and social media or is head
on over to Bruce Company dot com. That's Bruce Company
dot com. Get some cool little goodies and some other

(08:11):
great things for uh for for donating blood as well.
And I know there's some people I have a hard
time with it, like I get really woozy, but I
have a lot of folks that I know that just
it's you know, and it's such an important thing. What
a great way to we talk about things that don't
cost you anything and can really make a profound difference in.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
Someone else's for sure.

Speaker 2 (08:30):
Yeah, Harvey has some weirder type so that they're always
looking for.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
Yes, there's well come pick you up and everything. Yeah, yeah,
it's that's one of those. And it's one of those
areas where if you're different and unique, you do quite well.
Like people really enjoy uh well, yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Because if you need a certain if you're if you're
going into surgery or whatever and you need that certain
kind of yeah, kind of blood, it's harder to find.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
Yeah. So that's again, that's going to be going on
at the Middleton Gards of the Bruce Company on Saturday,
this second this Saturday from ten until two. All the
details up at Bruce Company dot com. That's Bruce Company
dot com Telphen I'm gonna get on there. Six so
eight three two one thirteen ten. That's six so eight
three two one thirteen ten. And Alexandria from Madison he
joins us this morning. Alexandria, welcome to the program.

Speaker 4 (09:16):
Well, thank you, Good morning, Seohn and Lisa morning. I've
talked to you before about this pink geranium that I
bought in April of twenty twenty one in commemoration of
my sister, and it's been beautiful. However, this year, when
I put it out a Mother's Day, was the first
time I gave the application of the flower food. I
did the small spoon and a gallon of water, and

(09:37):
I did that every other week. Well, the plant has
not looked that well. It's kind of sparse, it's not
as full, it wasn't real green, and I thought, oh,
this is on its last leg, and it's screening up
a little bit better. And I walked outside a few
days ago and looked at it, and I have a
couple of little pink blossoms. I'm wondering, should I started

(10:01):
that plant food like this winter or something like that.
I don't know what to do.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
No, it's because when during the winter wind days are short,
plants aren't really actively growing and not really using the fertilizer.
So putting it on there is not going to help
the plant. It's not going to hurt it, for sure,
but it's certainly not going to do anything to help
you produce new blossoms. Have so, so this is a

(10:29):
plant that you bring in and out.

Speaker 4 (10:31):
Yes, okay, so it's in a window.

Speaker 3 (10:33):
Okay, have you repotted it?

Speaker 4 (10:37):
I haven't, That's what I was going to answer.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
That might be, I would say, that might be an issue.
It might be that the soil is depleted. It might
need be that it needs a slightly bigger pot. So
what would if it's in a six inch pot now
you want to upgrade it to like an eight inch.
You don't want to go much bigger than that, and
you'd want to do that pretty soon before the days
start to get noticeably short, and then that's not the

(10:59):
best time to repot things.

Speaker 4 (11:02):
And how often should I be using that the plant food,
the flower food, if.

Speaker 2 (11:07):
Every couple of weeks as a as a folier feed,
or if you're dredging the.

Speaker 4 (11:11):
Soil is fine, mm hmm okay. And then is there
a certain time that you stop doing that, uh frud lizer?

Speaker 2 (11:18):
Yeah, I would say we, you know, like for plants
that are you know, roses in that kind of thing
that we are regularly fertilizing to keep them blooming, we
usually want to stop that about the first to middle
part of September, Okay.

Speaker 4 (11:32):
And what time of the year should I start? Before spring?

Speaker 2 (11:36):
I would say, if you're it's inside and you're putting
it outside after Mother's Day, geraniums can take a little
bit of cool temps, I would say maybe started you know,
late April early May should be plenty of time.

Speaker 4 (11:48):
Okay, good, I guess I did that. Okay, then, yep,
very good.

Speaker 2 (11:52):
I think it probably has just depleted the soil that's
in the pot and it just needs a refresh for potting.

Speaker 4 (11:58):
Wonderful. My son got me a a beautiful another pink geranium.
I'll have to keep that going. Gorgeous. It had about
twenty blossoms on it when he gave it to me.
It's just beautiful.

Speaker 3 (12:07):
Nice.

Speaker 4 (12:08):
I have two of them to keep going. But thank
you so much. I always enjoy listening to you.

Speaker 3 (12:13):
Well, thank you. That's very sweet of you to say yes.

Speaker 1 (12:15):
Thanks Alexandria. Great call, great question. If you've got a questions, well,
I'd love to get you on there. Six o eight
three two one thirteen ten at six eight three two
one thirteen ten. By the way, Lisa, can I get
too hot for some plants? Plants get stressed and heat
obviously if they've got plenty of water, there for sure.

Speaker 2 (12:29):
And we have talked about that in the past, especially
with all the rainfall that we're getting. If your plants
are wilting when it's ninety degrees and the humidity is
really high, don't assume that they need water, Okay, check
the soil first, especially for potted plants. The soil can
get really heated in a container, much more than if

(12:49):
something's planted in the ground. So if it's wilting and
you check the soil and the soil is still damp,
maybe just nudge it into a place where it's not
getting sort of that really hot, intense afternoon sun until
the tent breaks. So oka put it in a place
where maybe it gets a little shade, and that should help.

Speaker 3 (13:07):
If you constantly water.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
Whenever you see something that's wilted at this time of year,
you do run the risk of overwater.

Speaker 3 (13:14):
Oh okay, which is not a good thing.

Speaker 1 (13:16):
You're kind of fighting your instinct at that.

Speaker 2 (13:18):
Yeah you are, because it looks wilting. Oh it must be,
it must need water. But when you bring all this
heat into the equations, sometimes it's just it's heat stress.

Speaker 1 (13:29):
Oh it's well good because when when Alexandria mentioned cold,
I said, what about heat? Does heat get it? Get
them going too? So yeah it does. And we've got
we've got some very warm days ahead. We've got a
lot of great sek like.

Speaker 3 (13:40):
It's going to break yeah after Tuesday. So that's good.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
Yeah, it should be. It should be a great week ahead.
It's a great day to get on in to the
Middleton Guard cent the Bridge Company, twenty eight thirty Partment Street.
That's twenty at thirty Partment Street. If you've got a
question for Lisa Love, da have join us this morning.
Phone number to get on the air six so eight
three two one thirteen ten. That's six oh eight three
two one thirteen ten. Gets you on there with Lisa
Breaks from the Bruce Cup. Don't forget as well the
website Bruce Company dot com. That's Bruce Company dot com,

(14:05):
Facebook and social media. The Bruce Company. Will talk a
little bit about Beatles and some other things going on
at the Bruce Company and take your call next as
every Day Outdoor Living with the Bruce Company continues here
in thirteen ten WIBA eight twenty four thirteen ten WIBA
and Everyday Outdoor Living brought to you by the Bruce
Company online Bruce Coompany dot com. That's Bruce Company dot com.

(14:26):
Of course, great day to get on into the Middleton
Garden Center of the Bruce Company right at twenty eight
thirty parm Interstreet. That's twenty at thirty parm Registrate. They'd
love to see your smiling face. You can also, of
course learn more online the website Bruce Coompany dot com.
That's Bruce Coompany dot com, Facebook and social media the
Bruce Company. And I wanted to ask and comment. I
have my Raspberry bushes, which are a favorite target traditionally

(14:50):
of Japanese beetles. I've seen two and that was a
few weeks ago. I don't know if they're just if
was a Gail that predicted that they may now or
was that Linda No.

Speaker 2 (14:58):
Gail Gales thought it was Gale's silver lining to the
fact that we did not we were not able to
do much snowplowing.

Speaker 5 (15:08):
Okay, yeah, so it just depends on what side of
the equation you're on. Yes, the landscape crew is lamenting
the low snowfall and Gale was celebrating the low snowfalls.

Speaker 1 (15:23):
And that is that bearing out. Are we seeing fewer
calls and questions now?

Speaker 3 (15:27):
It's really funny.

Speaker 2 (15:28):
I don't know if we've just sort of, you know,
all the talking about Japanese beetles and prevention.

Speaker 3 (15:33):
We've we've sold a ton of.

Speaker 2 (15:37):
Japanese beetle accouterments and treatments and whatnot, but we haven't
heard a ton of reports about Japanese beetles, Like they're
not all over the garden center. So if you bought
that stuff, it will still be good next year. Just
don't stort outside, especially if it was something liquid so

(15:58):
grub aside is different. But if you bought any of
the liquid things like eight or beetle killer, just store
those inside the freeze thaw in your garage or in
a garden shut or something is not good for the
efficacy of the product you mentioned.

Speaker 1 (16:15):
Grub Aside, that stuff is you know, use is useful
for multiple different different types of gross critters as well.

Speaker 2 (16:23):
Right, well, it's for grubs, for beetles who have a
grub stage in your lawn.

Speaker 3 (16:31):
That's what it works for.

Speaker 1 (16:32):
And there's a bunch of them out there.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
There are like June bugs, Japanese beetles, there's you know,
several others. Japanese beetles are the one that cause the
most consternation for gardeners. Most of those products are year round, okay,
so they last for twelve months. You can still put
that down, Okay, that will help as the grubs hatch

(16:56):
in the ground this fall. It will not do any
thing for the current beetle population because it's only effective
against grubs. So things like grubex have a year round component.
You have to apply them every year, or you can
do something like milky spore, which is a more organic

(17:17):
treatment that once you get it down it will last
for multiple years.

Speaker 1 (17:23):
Oh fantastic with a milky spore too. Does does is
there another use because I feel like we've brought it up.
Does that have other uses than just dealing with those? No?

Speaker 3 (17:31):
No, it's for grubs.

Speaker 1 (17:32):
That's okay, that's its thing. It clearly does well because
I feel like we've talked about Yeah.

Speaker 2 (17:37):
Yeah, so if you put the milky spore down, you
get a ten year.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
Protection.

Speaker 2 (17:43):
Okay, if you follow the manufacturer's instructions. Oh wow, where
you're putting down something like grubex every year. It just
depends on you know, it's a bigger expense at the onset,
but it sort of averages itself out if you calculate
that you don't have to put it down every year
and purchase new products, so.

Speaker 1 (18:02):
You could spend more time, you know, doing other things
if you do the longer, that's yeah. Definitely talking this
morning with liast of breaks from the Bruce Company online
Bruce Company dot com. That's Bruce Company dot com, Facebook
and social media, the Bruce Company. That website I mentioned,
Bruce Company dot com. It's a great day to get
on in Middleton, garent Center of the Bruce Company right
at twenty eight thirty Parmenter Street. That's twenty eight thirty
Partment Street. I want to ask you we talked about,

(18:23):
of course, with the with the great great donations of
a veg folks may have dropped those off at the
Bruce Company and they go a long way. Other great
things you guys are doing, of course, is working with
Fetch this year and helping helping puppies find find a
forever home. And wow, what a what a cool little
partnership that.

Speaker 2 (18:41):
Yeah, it has been fun to have the puppies in
the store. They'll be back on the twenty fourth.

Speaker 1 (18:48):
Okay, we have.

Speaker 2 (18:51):
Several things happening that day, so the all of the
details are on our website on the events page. But
we do have more offering fifteen minute sessions with one
of our landscape designers for free, so you need to
sign up for that. We also have Michelle coming from
the Deliciouser and she's going to talk about ways to

(19:15):
sort of jazz up your game if you're cooking those vegetables,
the ones that you're not donating.

Speaker 1 (19:20):
Oh the Garden Dourmet is that the yeah, yeah.

Speaker 3 (19:23):
Yeah, so yeah, and Fetch will be there as well.

Speaker 1 (19:27):
Oh, fantastic and I saw on your Facebook page as well.
I know you guys have had the folks from whose
Woods out a couple few times in September. They're coming again.

Speaker 3 (19:36):
Yeah, that is on the That is on the website
as well.

Speaker 1 (19:39):
I just get distracted by birds. I see the owl,
and that's all I lock in on.

Speaker 3 (19:42):
Yeah, the guy. Yeah, I don't know who she's bringing.
She'll tell us when we get closer.

Speaker 1 (19:46):
But do you know that owl's eyes are cylindrical and
not ball They're not circular like spherical.

Speaker 3 (19:53):
No, I did not know that.

Speaker 1 (19:54):
I didn't know that either until I think, right. I So,
i'd met the whose Woods people a couple of years ago.
We had an injured what kind of bird was it?
I don't know if it was a hawk or and
I and I met her to drop it off because
of his injury, and they were able to nurse it back.
But I started looking up because we've got all these
bar owls and things in our yard, and I thought

(20:15):
I got to learn about some of these birds. And
I'm reading and they're like, yeah, the reason why owls
like they can pivot their heads the way that they
do is because their their eyes. They don't rotate. Their
eyes don't rotate in the seats, so they don't look
other directions because they're they're cylinderical, and that allows them
to take in when they get light, takes it in,
allows them to kind of see in the dark. I
thought that is that is fascinating. So these are the
type of things that you learn when you hang out

(20:37):
with the folks from the Raptor Center.

Speaker 2 (20:38):
And so yeah, she's very knowledgeable and really really fun
and approachable.

Speaker 3 (20:42):
It's a fun event.

Speaker 1 (20:43):
And that's going to be coming up.

Speaker 3 (20:47):
I want to say September. It's like the second weekend and.

Speaker 1 (20:51):
The details at Bruce company dot com. So yeah, we
left it thirteenth. Maybe mark that on the counts thirteenth
because owls and rats.

Speaker 2 (20:57):
And you need to sign up for that because because
of the nature of the event and the fact that
they're working with wild creatures.

Speaker 3 (21:06):
Yes, we do have to put a limit on that.

Speaker 2 (21:08):
So sign up now and then we sort of at
some point we sort of assign everybody at time. Okay,
so if you sign up, you won't get an acknowledgement
email right away, but you will get one later.

Speaker 1 (21:20):
Fantastic, So it's you want to do that, you want
to head on over to First Company dot com get
registered for that, and I know you filled out. We
talked the other week about filling out the calendar and
I know as I do.

Speaker 3 (21:28):
I'm still working on the holiday the holiday.

Speaker 2 (21:34):
Workshops, okay, but those should be up maybe not this week,
probably next week.

Speaker 1 (21:38):
Okay, awesome, awesome, So I checked that all out online
and of course, uh, September thirteenth, a noon is what
you have for the raptor experience anything. I do feel
like we do have to talk about any specials going
at the First Company because we haven't mentioned anything today
and I know that no we.

Speaker 3 (21:52):
Don't, but this is the time.

Speaker 2 (21:54):
So spectacular summer savings on selected Theresa shrubs, on select perennials,
there are some specials on annuals, on garden dacort oh
those big canetic spinners and ceramic containers. Also, we're starting
to go through the furniture department and do some markdowns on.

Speaker 3 (22:16):
