Also find them right on Facebook and social media at
the Bruce Company. Even better, what a great day, what
a great time here to get on into the Middleton
garden sound of the Bruce Company right at twenty eight

(00:20):
thirty parm Inter Street. That's twenty eight thirty partmentis Street.
And joining us at studio this morning from the Bruce
Company is Lisa Briggs. Lisa, how you been.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
I'm good. How are you?

Speaker 1 (00:28):
I'm doing really good. Great to see you. And the
weather looks fantastic.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Yes, there are a couple nights that are worrisome if
you have taken home annuals and tender edge, and we
know you have because the.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Story is super busy this weekend.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Yeah, so I.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Think that right now you're you know, before you put
out things that are really tender, you're looking for nights
to be in the fifties, okay, or close to forty
eight ish. And we do have some things that are
a little bit lower. There's some they're flirting with fifty.
So I think over the next couple of weeks, just
kind of watch the night temps and plan accordingly.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
So and the day temps are great, but it's those
night temps that are really Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
Yeah, I think if you you know, you could anything
that you're sowing by seed, you could do now, so
you know, starting beans or putting in sunflowers, that kind
of thing, if the if your soil is warmed up.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Okay, most of it is just keep an eye on
those tender seedlings.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
So if you bought a couple of tomato plants or
you've grown them from seed yourself, it's a little dicey
over the next couple of weeks, so just keep your
eye up.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Ready to bring them in as need be or cover
them up if need.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
Yes, yeah, exactly, have a strategy, have a plant.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
That's it. That again, I think I've told you just
before you put that on a shirt and sell like crazy.
Life needs a strategy, it does. You've got a question
for Lisa. Maybe you've got something popping You're going, Hey,
what's happening there? Lisa would love to answer your question.
Six so eight three two thirteen ten, that's so wait
three two one thirteen ten. Love do you have you
join us this morning here on Everyday Outdoor Living brought

(02:05):
to you by the Bruce Company. And speaking of weather
and planting and all that stuff, summer will be here
in no time. And let's say I want to get
some bulbs and I want to swing by the Bruce
Comeban pick up some bulbs. What do I need to
know about summer blooming bulbs.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
Well, we're talking about things like dahlia's and cannas and kalladium,
that sort of thing. We do have those implants. Those
things are starting to come in and so if you
want instant gratification.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
We can sure do that for you.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
But we do have a lot of those things still
in bulb for so now that the new ones are
coming in that are already planted, we're going to put
the bulbs on sale. So you'll save thirty percent on
all of those summer blooming bulbs. Also thirty percent off
on any veggie roots. Oh, now, mostly veggie. A lot

(02:58):
of veggie roots are for root veggie, but that does
not mean that root.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Veggies are on sale. Vetch roots are on sale.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
So we're talking about things like asparagus, crowns, seed potatoes,
onion sets, that kind of thing.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
On sale on sale at the Bruce.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Company at the Bruce Company in the garden Center.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
What a day to get up. It supplies last twenty
eight thirty Department Street. You want to get in right away,
by the way, And I was on here I mentioned
Facebook and social media. I follow you obviously, I know
you do.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
I see that.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
I love seeing your guys and stuff. And I saw
a post about petunias, which are which are just beautiful
flowers and such a great variety of colors, and.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
Yeah, they've come a long way.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
And you had mentioned on your Facebook posts that your
dad used to call them gas station flowers, which did.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
He did, and mostly because I think they're they're pretty
indestructible petunias. And now I'm not going to lie and
say that he didn't say that with complete judgment and
a stage, because he did.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
He sure did. He was that kind of guy.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
But you know, they were they were kind of messy
because they did not self the they did not self clean,
meaning that the flowers when they were done, they did
not fall off naturally. To continue the reblooming process, you
had to take them off, and they were sticky. No,
they still are a little sticky, like it's not sticky,

(04:23):
just when you touch the flowers, they kind of I
don't know what it is anyway.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
It's weird.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
But now the newer varieties self clean, which means they
keep on blooming without you having to clean them up.
And they also have you know, used to get white
ones and purple ones and red ones and pink ones,
and now they come in with you know, star centers
and they are more ruffled or they're speckled, or they

(04:50):
have a picketee edge, or you know, all kinds of
colors and sizes, and there are even some doubles out there.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
Oh really, yes.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
The trick with petunias though, is that they need extra potassium.
So if you're fertilizing hanging baskets or pots of anials,
and you should, honestly, if you want them to be
looking really bodacious all summer long, petunias need a fertilizer
with a little extra potassium. And so when you look
in the garden center, you'll see that there are fertilizers

(05:21):
for petunias, and those are good for any flowers, but
especially good for petunias.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
And once you get your petunias going, I mean they're
they they're fine, they're good to go. They're like, yeah, solid.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
Yeah, they take the heat.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
They'll take a little bit of shade, but really you're
gonna want six hours of sun for them to continue
to have all those big, colorful blossoms. But they're really
adaptable as far as temperature, which is probably part of
the reason my dad call them gases because they always
grew in those beds that you know, gas stations in
the sixties and seventies had those beds like by the
windows between the yeah, between the sidewalk and the gas pumps. Right,

(05:58):
it's not a very hospitable spot, but the petunias rocked
that you got.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
You guys have a bunch of stock at the Bruce Company, all.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
Kinds of colors, all kinds of shapes, all sizes, like like, yeah,
the whole nine.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Yards Petunia day today, Get a punia Day. It was
Porky's Pig's wife is petunia pig?

Speaker 2 (06:18):
Right, I think some remember, Yeah, were they married? Were
they boyfriend and girlfriend?

Speaker 1 (06:24):
That sounds scandalous, So we're going we're going, okay.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
Back away.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
They were good friends. Yeah, Yeah, Petunias are great flowers.
And we talked to about about different flowers and you know,
getting into the Bruce Company, and what a great time
of year it is, you know.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
Because when I do the combinations for the annuals for
the annual workshops, which by the way, there's room, so
go to the website and sign up. I hear my
dad's voice in my head whenever I put some petunias
in there. But the one we did Saturday, there's this
amazing petunia that I and I always celebrated in the workshop.

(07:04):
You know, I have this little thing in the back
of my head that says petunias, but some of them
are so good. I just can't help myself.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
Yeah, it's great. What about speaking of parents specifically moms. Yeah,
Mother's Day's coming up? Huh it is.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
Have you been shopping yet?

Speaker 1 (07:23):
Yeah a little bit. You'll see me soon too, definitely. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
Mother's Day is this Sunday, and mom's moms should be celebrated,
and not just like the mom who gave birth to you,
but all of us have other moms in our lives
that would love to be honored to know that you're.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
Thinking of them.

Speaker 3 (07:44):
We've got all kinds of things in the garden center
for them, you know, gifts, in the boutique, all kinds
of of course, beautiful hanging pots or hanging baskets, flowers, roses,
all that kind of stuff. There's this the story is
just chock full of things that moms would love. But
if you can't decide, yeah, and a lot of people

(08:06):
cannot decide, get your mom a gift card. Yeah, and
right now, the Bruce Company has a special on gift card.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
So for every fifty dollars gift cards you buy.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
We're going to throw in an extra ten to say
Happy Mother's Day to your mom. And so fifty makes sixty,
one hundred makes one hundred and twenty. Now you can
get these gift cards in any kind of denominations that
you want.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
Sure, so say.

Speaker 3 (08:30):
You're getting sixty, you would get one for sixty, you
one for fifty, and one for ten. You could get
three for twenty. So we're open to accommodating that. But
just know that that's a really good deal. You're getting
an extra twenty percent.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
That's glorious. The other cool thing you can do is
go in buy mom, if you're like, I don't know
what to get mom, a nice flower, nice flowering plant,
because everybody's your gift card and then you put a
gift card on there as well.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
We're a little a little What I've been helping folks
with lately are like theme baskets. Oh we kind of
did them at Christmas time, you know, for somebody who
has particular interest. But for moms, you could do like
a spa basket, or you could do a cute little
canvas tote with some matching accessories already packed inside, or

(09:21):
like a cool gardening trug with some gloves or those
really new what are they called protective sleeves. They're not
a glove. They're a sleeve that's made out. It's it's
a fabric, and it helps if you're outside and you're
you know, prone to sunburning or something like that, and

(09:43):
it also protects you if you're I was helping a
customer yesterday morning tag some arborvity, and I got arborvity
rash all over my The insides of your forearms are
the sekin there is very sensitive to that kind of thing,
and they come in neat patterns and you just slip
them on over your arms and go, you know, really
above your elbow to your wrists, and then you put

(10:03):
on your gloves.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
And you're all set to go good.

Speaker 1 (10:05):
I feel like with you describing this stuff, you know
this this should be your way. It is your career.
You could make a you could make a business out
of putting these things. That is, those are really cool.

Speaker 3 (10:18):
So you could do some you know, some seed packets
or you know, a plant and some gardening accessory. So
there are all kinds of possibilities in the garden center.
And don't forget this approach for your dad too when
that is rolling around.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
In about a month.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
Yeah, for sure we'll talk because I have a whole
list of things at the Bruce Company. Like like I
feel like remember that you see those game shows were
like like people could go into stores and they'd like
just fill up a cart with all.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
The things, go right to the meat section. I would do.

Speaker 1 (10:51):
I would love to do that at the Bruce Company
because I'd have like a sol stove but or whatever
grill and.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
See if I could marketing into that.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
Get two minutes two minutes of just yeah with that
is it's a great data. As we talk with Lisa
Briggs from the Bruce Company, what a great opportunity again
the Mother's Day special going out with the gift cards.
Also a great data pick up, something special for mom
and the moms in your life. Stop on and they'd
love to see you. Right at twenty eight thirty part
Regis Street. That's twenty at thirty Partment Street. That's where
you'll find the Middleton Garden side of the Bruce Company.

(11:21):
Phone lines are open right now six oh eight three
two one thirteen ten. That's six oh eight three two
one thirteen ten. Gets you right out on the air
with Lisa Briggs. Maybe you've got some issues, maybe you've
got some problems in your yard. We'll take your call.
Of course, speaking of problems in your yard, Lisa's going
to talk about some common ones and some of the
solutions to those. Will do that and take a call
next as Everyday Outdoor Living with the Bruce Company continues

(11:42):
right here on thirteen ten WIB eight eight twenty one
thirteen ten WIB and every Day Outdoor Living brought to
you by the Bruce Company Online Brucecompany dot com. That's
Bruce Company dot com, Facebook and social media the Bruce Company.
What a great data Get on into the Bruce Company
right twenty eight thirty parm In the Street. That's where
you'll find the Milton Garden Center. Of course, we talked

(12:03):
this morning with Lisa Briggs. If you've got questions for Lisa,
she'd love to answer. Forty six eight three two one
thirteen ten. That's six oaight three two one thirteen ten.
Mother's Day on the horizon. Great day to get into
the Bruce Company. Get mom something special. You can also
have got a great special on Mother's Day gift cards
for every fifty dollars you get ten dollars. Yeah, a
little a little thank you which you can bump. Yeah,

(12:24):
you can get ten dollars. Bump you give that mom,
or you could put that in your pocket for yourself.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
Mom deserves it. Give it to your mom. That's my
as a mom, I'm.

Speaker 1 (12:32):
Saying, yeah, give it to your mom. That ten dollars.
It's like a it's like the perfect of like I
want this thing, but then I want this nice, little
little extra. It's it's good. And we're going to talk
about some of the issues that folks may be maybe
dealing with right now. We're going to talk about some
of the products and the problems and the solution with

(12:53):
those products. But real quick, during the break, speaking of moms,
my wife texted during the break about she's stopping in
today to pick up some paeonies.

Speaker 3 (13:03):
Yes, yes, So the difference between pae andy hoops and
tomato hoops. Okay, tomato hoops are larger on the bottom
and smaller on the top, and peenie hoops are the opposite.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
Oh, and peena hoops are great.

Speaker 3 (13:18):
And if your peenies are up, and you have noticed
that your flowers, that the plants flop when the flowers,
especially if you have those big doubles, peena hoops kind
of keep them from flopping and they do sometimes kind
of flop over the edge and it doesn't show the
flowers off to their advantage. Now it's too late to

(13:38):
do this now, But if you have peeny hoops and
you're thinking that that is not the perfect solution, then
you need to do this for next year. So we
have what are called grow through grid hoops, and basically
it's a circle with a grid. It's vinyl coated so
they last forever, and then it has three legs.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
And so when your peenies are first coming up, yeah, I.

Speaker 3 (14:04):
Just put those grids on the ground with the peenies
coming up through, and then as they get taller, I
put the legs on and pull them up, and so
it's more like like a like a if you're as
old as I am, you remember frogs that you put
in your vases that kind of hold the flowers upright,

(14:24):
it's the same thing.

Speaker 2 (14:25):
It sort of holds the flowers in place.

Speaker 3 (14:28):
And I've had some of mine for twenty years, so
they last forever. So if you've got already you have
the regular peeny cages, go ahead and use those, but
remember for next year to get the.

Speaker 1 (14:40):
Grow through hoops really good.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
It's amazing.

Speaker 1 (14:43):
They make a great Mother's Day gift too. So along
with a peenie, along with exactly that's that's that's two
problems solved right there, You got you got something. Yeah.
By the way, we're talking speaking of problems and an issue,
you know, we were we were talking about like what
should I be doing right now? Let's say, yeah, and
there are certain things that we should be addressing right

(15:04):
now yard wise to prevent some future problems, aren't there.

Speaker 2 (15:07):
Yeah. So I had a conversation with Gail.

Speaker 3 (15:09):
She is our garden goods buyer, so she and she's
been in the industry for years and years and years,
and she's super knowledgeable about treatments and birding and a
lot of other things. But really my go to person
when I have somebody come in and they have a
question that I've never heard before, Gail's the person I

(15:32):
go to to get the answer.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
So we're going to do.

Speaker 3 (15:34):
A little thing where she's going to talk to We're
going to talk on Friday, and she's going to tell
me or remind me about the things that you should
be doing in your garden, whether it's something that's happening
right now and how to treat it, or if it's.

Speaker 2 (15:46):
A preventative thing. And that's we're going to talk about now.

Speaker 3 (15:50):
So the month of May is a perfect time to
do systemic treatment for your trees and shrubs. And we
talked about this five or six years ago when we
were all about Emerald ash board.

Speaker 2 (16:04):
And that product which used.

Speaker 3 (16:06):
To be called bare Advance, it's now Bio Advanced twelve
months Feed and Protect tree and shrub or tree and
Shrub feed and Protect anyway.

Speaker 2 (16:17):
It is a really easy thing to use.

Speaker 3 (16:19):
You mix it with water and you just pour it
around the base of the plant. It goes into the
vascular system of the plant and protects from any insects
that feed on it for a year, so May is
the perfect time to do it if you want to
be ready for the maybe dreaded.

Speaker 2 (16:40):
Arrival of Japanese beetles.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
It also protects against scale and of course emerald dashboard,
which isn't as big a problem anymore because there aren't
asshtreats around, but there are plenty excuse me, plenty of
boring insects and insects that feed on foliage and that
and flowers and that kind of thing. It's a super

(17:02):
useful treatment, and the month of May is when you
want to apply it.

Speaker 1 (17:07):
What are there and they're certain like the Japanese beetle,
I know that. Like with raspberries, they've loved our raspberries program.

Speaker 3 (17:14):
You don't want to use some things that you're going
to eat, okay, right, okay, So for things like raspberries
and green beans.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
You want to use other measures you could use.

Speaker 3 (17:26):
There are organic and non organic methods of contact killers or.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
Things that that you can put on.

Speaker 3 (17:35):
Your plants that get that will kill the beetles but
are safe for you to then eat the product, or
you can use We've talked about barrier message that's too
about putting floating row covers.

Speaker 2 (17:49):
Over your raspberry patch.

Speaker 3 (17:50):
Because Japanese beetles fly in land. They don't walk around right,
so they don't they're not going to go on the
ground and climb up underneath.

Speaker 1 (17:59):
What about little grub Well.

Speaker 3 (18:01):
That's yeah, So this is another preventative thing for Japanese
beetles and for other things like junebugs other grub insects.
Is now is also the time to put down some
grub aside. Yeah, so you can use a lot of
the grubicides. You put them down, they last a year.
So Japanese beetles probably the grubs are now just kind

(18:21):
of rising up and starting to feed on roots, which
they do before they emerge as adults. And then they're
gonna have a little bit of a pupe eating kind
of stage where they're going to change into adult beetles
and then emerge usually around the end of June early July.
They feed on your plants and they go back into

(18:41):
the ground and lay eggs, and then those grubs develop
and start chewing on roots of your lawn or whatever,
and the grub aside will kill them.

Speaker 2 (18:50):
In that stage.

Speaker 1 (18:51):
Perfect. I like that.

Speaker 2 (18:54):
Some multi ProMED attack.

Speaker 1 (18:57):
There is nothing about the life cite. You know, you
think of like like caterpillar to butterfly, just just like
a beautiful transformation, like it goes from a grub to
e the grubs are not especially attractive, terrible beetle and
then starts all.

Speaker 3 (19:14):
You know, I Japanese beetles are not unattractive. No, as
an insect, they're that really kind of striking bronze color.

Speaker 2 (19:23):
Yeah, white dots.

Speaker 3 (19:24):
But there they can they create a lot of damage.

Speaker 1 (19:27):
Yeah, I'm guessing maybe the first time I ever saw
when I thought, oh, that's kind of in the same
thing with like the emerald ashboard, You're like, oh, that's
kind of a cool and then you're like, oh, no,
it's not cool. That is the worst critter you have
ever come across. So now it's time to be doing
that stuff. So when you're picking up your mother's day
gifts today, you can also pick up some grub aside
and pick up it's not.

Speaker 3 (19:49):
Bear, what's it called bioadvanced twelve months tree and shrub,
protect and feed.

Speaker 2 (19:56):
It's a lot of.

Speaker 1 (19:57):
Work, or just do what I do is say hey,
when you get in the brisk company, hey, it's on an.

Speaker 2 (20:02):
End cap in a blue bottle with a big sign next.

Speaker 3 (20:04):
To it and it says apply now.

Speaker 1 (20:07):
And if you're still, if you're still again like me,
you can always just ask somebody and they will happily
take you right to where you.

Speaker 2 (20:13):
Meet to get you right here, right there.

Speaker 1 (20:15):

small purchases.
