Company dot com. That's Brucecompany dot com, Facebook and social
media The Bruce Company Great data. Get on into the
Bruce Company's Milton Garden Center right at twenty eight to
thirty Parminter Street. That's twenty at thirty Parment Street. That
also a great day to call in. Six oh eight
(00:21):
three two one thirteen ten. That's six oh eight three
two one thirteen ten. Why well, I'll tell you why.
We've got Lisa Breaks with us from the Bruce Company
and Studio ready to take your call. At least. How
you doing?
Speaker 2 (00:32):
I'm good? How are you?
Speaker 1 (00:32):
I'm doing fantastic. I love when we say eight oh eight.
Do you know what area code is? Eight O eight No, Honolulu,
HAWAIII nice. The only reason why I know it is
there's a place in Janesville called eight O eight Cheesecake.
We've got one location in Janesville and one location in Honolulu. Okay,
So I have no idea why they chose Janesville, but
(00:54):
they did.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Maybe maybe it originated in Janesville. Oh, and now they moved.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
They've retired to y you know would be fun? Would
be a Bruce Company Hawaii. Okay, I know somebody that
would make that. Yes, who would volunteer? And if you
need an assistant for anything, Lisa, I would be there
for you. The Middleton Garden Center is looking beautiful these days,
and I know there's a ton going on out there,
(01:20):
and I was looking at the calendar events over some
of those.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
But I know I've got to put some more on
there sometime this week.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
So it's it's action packed. And as we look at.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
The it is it is.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
I love that stuff too. And as I look at
the forecast, I know I.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Was looking this morning before I left, and I do
not like these, like high of eighty five?
Speaker 2 (01:42):
What is up with that?
Speaker 1 (01:43):
Christina says. Over the weekend, she.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Says, now see this, but this, this forecast looks completely different.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
From someone else's.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Someone else's I will I trust.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
And rely on Emma Hippis. So I'm going, okay, what
I love about this time? And I'm not a huge
fan of the heat this late in the air, but
I do like that it gets nice and chilly like that's.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
True even the other forecast.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
I was looking at the days were more in the eighties, Yeah,
but the nights were still in the low sixties, upper fifties.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
It's and I know there's a certain vedg that loves
those nice crisp evenings.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Yeah. Yeah, And there's still a little bit of time
if you want to plant some things like spinach or lettuce.
They love this warm ground means that they will still
germinate quickly, but those cool nights mean that they won't.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
It means that they won't bolt.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
Oh is that?
Speaker 2 (02:31):
And it sometimes the.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
Cooler weather sort of intensifies the sugars and vegetables, so
baby carrots will be super sweet. So if you've got
a little spot in your garden, yeah, go ahead and
utilize it for the next few weeks.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
I love, and I've been doing this since I was
a very little child. I love when I get my
carrot and I'll chew off the outside and leave that
little there's that little core. Yeah, and that it is
like the sweetest, most delicate like And I think part
of what makes baby carrots so appealing is some of
that out outer stuff has been removed to make them.
Babies hate to break to folks, but baby carrots not
(03:06):
actually baby carrots they're just big carrots that have been
cut up in ground, not a little bit, but.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
There's that screen must actually grow baby carrots.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
Well that's well, then that's the other thing too. It's
like then you get the baby carrots you grow in
the garden that are just delicious through and through.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
They are delicious through and throught they are.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
It's hard to go wrong with that stuff. So things
to be tended to with those things. What about bulbs,
I know we were talking about the past couple of
weeks about spring. We're not talking.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
Fall or right, so we're talking spring blooming bulbs. So
we're talking about things like tulipstaff edils, Alium crocus.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Some of the more.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Unusual things like frits and that the other things like
that Camassia fritz fritz fritillaria. Call them fritz fritillaria. It's
a really crown imperial or they're really beautiful.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
Oh yeah, right, yes, they look they look I don't
know how to scrap, very classy.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Look.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
They almost looked like something you'd find at a very
high end resort.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
As you walk they are really they are really gorgeous.
They look pretty tropical and they're hardy hear and since
they have kind of a smell.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Yeah, the critters don't like them.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
Oh I didn't know that part. Yeah, you would think
they would love those things.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Would I have new staff unpacked the bulbs. They're always
surprised by the smell of fertilaria.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Yeah, yeah, it's not. It's it's fragrant, but not what
you'd expect.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Is that what you're Yeah, that's what I'm saying, that's
what you're.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
All right, Well, and they look they look fantastic, So
those type of things to be to be looking at.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
You scotch them and it's still the ground is still
too warm to plant them now, but hold off, but
definitely pick them up now.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Why there's the best selection. And then just keep them
in a you know, in a cool, dark, eerie airy
not eerie could be eerie too, but that's not necessary
airy place, and then plant them once we get a frost.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
So and you'll give a heads up.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
Yeah, yeah, that you know.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
October. I think between October fourth and seventh is our
average first frost.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
I do not think that's gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
No, bless something less, something really drastically changes really really fast.
I think we're probably. Yeah, yeah, so it's it's it's
a good times as we talk about getting in the
Middleton gardens, so to the Briucet Company right at twenty
eight thirty Parma Street. It's a good time to stock
up on that stuff and be ready for when that
frost does come through it pick up.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Some garlic to sew as well.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
So and it tasted garlic will be nice and tasty
for you next year, yes, going then.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
It will spend all winter putting roots on it and
then you get really nice big heads.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Oh yeah, good, And there's it's funny we were talking
about carrots earlier, but also like some of those some
of those spices and flavorings that you want to be
a little more intense. It seems like when you grow
them yourself and you probably know the science and stuff
by in this, they they're just more flavorful or like
that you mentioned garlic, just kind of more options.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Yeah, yeah, there's just more options.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
Is some of it too that like a lot of
the stuff you buy at stores are are kind of
genetically modified for longevity and shelf life as a part.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
For sure, I think that for sure, there are varieties
that are are developed to ship and to hold longer
and that kind of thing. And there's nothing wrong with that.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
But you know, I like I like a good heirloom apple.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Yeah, there's and there's something too delicious about about you know,
even like tomatoes and stuff. There's just it's just a
whole other a whole level of I think I think
that guy with the with the shades would call it flavortown.
There's a whole other level of flavortown that you.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Go, oh that guy, Yeah, that guy.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Yeah, by the way, speaking, I know you like it,
but not my wife likes.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Okay, there's there's there's something for everyone.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
Oh yes, why we like so many choices.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
For folks that have extras from the garden too. We
haven't touched on this, we.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
Haven't and we still have, but we're still collecting for
Way Forward. So if you do have excess produce zucchini,
run a monk, more tomatoes than you can make sauce
out of, drop them off at the garden center and
we'll take them over to Way Forward Resources.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
They're a community group and they have a food bank.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
So and everybody loves as we were talking earlier, how
much better it tastes out of the garden.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Too much for you share it with somebody else.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
What a great what a great win win. And speaking
of great win wins, as we talked to morning with
Lisa Breaks and Brits Company, got a question six O
eight three two one thirteen ten at six O eight
three two one thirteen ten. Every year you guys select
an area charity or an era area organization to work with,
and what a win win. This one is fetch Wisconsin.
You guys have had the puppies and we.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Have had a great, a great year with them. It's
almost over. We usually wrap this up at the end
of the year, and I think that we have given
them two checks.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
Oh nice, So I have somewhere in my notebook I
have written all the stuff.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
But yeah, so the dogs didn't eat the first one.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
That was no, the dogs did not eat the first check.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
So but they you know, it's it's good because they're
they are They don't have a facility where they keep dogs.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
All the dogs are raised in homes and then.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
And then adopted out that way, so they're really well
socialized and loved and all that kind of stuff.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
And they show up at the Bruce Company in a wagon.
They show up at the Bruce.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
Company in a sometimes in a wagon. Sometimes we put
them on a nursery cart. Just depends on what's going on.
But yeah, they'll be They'll be at the store on
the eleventh, which is Family Fall Fest.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
Yes, so that's just.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Going to add an extra dimension to Family Fall Fest,
which is chaos anyway. So it's a community event. There's
no charge for activities. So they'll be pumpkin painting, and
there's a petting zoo. Now if you want to buy
food to actually feed the animals, that is a donation
(09:09):
that will go to Fetch. It's a dollar for a
cup of food. But that, like I said, those proceeds
go to Fetch.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
And then.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
What else, Oh, face painter balloon, there's the famous balloon
guy will be there. And then of course there will
be puppies and so I've got to figure out where
we're going to put them, yeah, to minimize the stress
on them.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
Yes, and a variety of different different critters in for
the petting zoo is Yeah, it's all.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
It's usually like younger animals or sort of dwarf animals.
There's like a mini usually a mini burrow. I think
a couple of years ago they had a little Highland
calf Highland cow adorable.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
I feel like I've seen pictures they am adorable.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
But it's really fun.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
So it is the eleventh October eleventh, from eleven to four.
If you want more information, you can check out our
Facebook page or our website. There's no pre registry that
you have to sign up for it or anything like that,
so just come on down.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
Should be a super fun DA again. That's the eleventh,
from eleven am till two pm. All the details up
at Bruce Company dot com. That's Bruce Company dot com
and the events tab you can find it there. Of course,
is going to be going on right at twenty thirty
Partment Street. If you've got questions, we've got answers. Love
to get your question this morning six oh eight three
two one thirteen ten. That's six so eight three two
one thirteen ten. We'll talk about some of the other
cool events going on coming up at the Bruce Company.
(10:31):
We will also take your call next as every Day
Outdoor Living with the Bruce Company continues here on thirteen ten.
Double Uiba eight twenty three thirteen ten Wuiba at every
Day Outdoor Living brought to you by the Bruce Company
online Bruce Company dot com. That's Bruce Company dot com.
Also you can find them on Facebook and social media,
the Bruce Company. What a great day to get on
into the Middleton Garden Center of the Bruce Company right
(10:52):
at twenty eight thirty apartment of Street. That's twenty eight
thirty apartment inter Street. On a great day to get
on in. So much stuff going on. You can follow
them on on They mentioned the Facebook pages as well
as Bruce Company. See all the upcoming events. It's busy
time of year. It's always busy at the Bruce Company.
Always fun stuff going on. And I know we talked
about the Family Fall Fest, but you've also got a
(11:13):
Fall Artisan Autumn Artisan Fair coming up as well as.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
Yeah, that's that started.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
It started in during COVID when we when the Garden
Expo went virtual and we decided to do a little
mini one in the greenhouse. It was, you know, really
well spaced together and gave the opportunity to some of
the local people who would normally be at the expo
to sort of set up in the in the in
(11:41):
the greenhouse. And so then it just sort of expanded
and now I think We've got close to fifty exhibitors
and it's they're makers, bakers, creators of everything from jewelry
and painting to bake goods. The Tamali guys are going
(12:01):
to be there, and so it's just it's a really
good way to connect the community with local crafts people.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
It's you can talk to them that.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
It's free for the crafts people. It's free for the
people who are coming to see them. We're just putting
the groups together. Great way to do a little bit
of shopping for yourself, a little bit of pre Christmas shopping.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
So it's just really fun.
Speaker 3 (12:27):
And as it's grown, we've had you know, we're seeing
the creative side of some of our Bruce Company employees
because now some of them have tables and booths in
there too. So that's really cool too, to give them
a chance to share their passion and their creativity with
with folks out there.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
How awesome is that?
Speaker 2 (12:46):
It's really cool. It's it's turned into a really cool event.
Speaker 1 (12:49):
It's a really good use too.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
Is space is empty.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
That's so it's what's impressive about it is you guys
did this and like, hey, we've got that.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
Yeah, because we've we've we've you know, we've cleared out
annuals and perennials, but we haven't brought in Christmas greens
and trees yet. So the space is sitting there, and
the weather. Some years it's really beautiful. One year it
was super cold. Everybody comes dressed for the weather and
we just have a really great time.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
And that's going to be coming up on the twenty fifth.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
That's on the twenty fifth, from eleven to four.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
Look at that Lisa you got like for folks that
don't know, by the way she does this off the
top of her head, it's well, no.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
I have a certain doubt because we're doing some recordings,
but I do know this one.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
Off the top of my ead.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
Speaking of events, Yeah, let's we have.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
We haven't had a ton of of so we might
cancel it.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
So let's not talk about Okay, it was a.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
Good idea, but it's not fleshing out the way I
wanted it to do.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
So what about just picking up pumpkins.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
That we do have pumpkins in And for sure we've
got you know, the orange carving ones in several different sizes,
and then the other you know, weirder looking ones like Cinderella. Yes, okay,
you know that's fine. Okay, and those are really nice
(14:11):
because you can, you know, you get pumpkins and you
carve them, and really after Halloween, you know, you put
them out if you're if you're lucky enough to be
out in the country, you put them out. The deer,
we'll eat them. But the other varieties are more less
pumpkin and more winter squash, so they are harder, more
(14:32):
difficult to carve. But on the other hand, they also
last a lot longer, so they're a really good way
to get your containers looking good through Thanksgiving, when you
then decide to flip them over to the winter holiday containers,
so you have like, you know, containers.
Speaker 1 (14:48):
Yes, yes, you do.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Just swap out one thing and put in.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
Something else and those hardier varieties and.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
You can eat them too. Yeah, a lot of them
are super tasty.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
I'll share mine with the deer, Okay, that's fine. You
know who else loves them? The raccoons, sure.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
And chipmunks and squirrels, all the critters they do.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
They do. I always feel guilty because, yeah, Christina will
come pick them up and we'll carve a couple and
we'll have out for display and those type of things.
I just feel guilty because by the time I take
the carved ones out to the out to the woods
for the deer, they're kind of mushy.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
Yeah, but the deer don't care.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
They you just softened it for us.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
They're fine, exactly. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:30):
So there are a bunch of really cool different colors
and some are warty and some are not. And it's
just really fun, so great for fall decorating.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
The great day to check that stuff out. By the way,
we talked about Charlie's gord today.
Speaker 3 (15:46):
Now we know the pumpkin is Charlie's Giant Pumpkins, or
as we like to call it, it's our great Pumpkin
Charlie Shortino. It's right in the entrance to the store,
so you can't miss it. And if you stop at
the plant desk, they'll give you a ballot and you
can guess the weight. And then there's we're also doing
(16:07):
that same thing on Facebook, so you can go and
check that out and guess the weight.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
Two fifty dollars gift cards.
Speaker 3 (16:16):
In the running, one for in store, one for social
and then prices right rules so closest.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
Without going over one. Bob yeah, that don't that's not
going to work. Don't do that. I can tell you
there are people who are closer than one pound.
Speaker 1 (16:34):
All right. With the with the weather the way it is,
house plants, the colder nights, you want to be bringing
them in, don't you.
Speaker 3 (16:42):
Well, I think you know, I think we had those
nights that were low forties. If you didn't bring them
in yet and they're still out there, they're fine because
nights that are in the fifties are not a problem.
But if they're still outside, I think that eventually.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
The bottom is going to drop out of this.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
Okay, So you need to have a plan, So treat
them for bugs. Now that nights are a little cooler
and we have had some colder nights, the pest population
outside might be a little less, but I still I
would treat them at the very.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
Least with the systemic.
Speaker 3 (17:21):
Put something in the soil so if they're in an
eggs or anything in there, that you get rid of
those before you bring them inside.
Speaker 1 (17:27):
Okay, good, good plan to have in place. Get that
ready this week. One final thing before we wrap up.
I know you guys have had the folks and I'm
on your Facebook page now and checking this stuff out.
It's pretty amazing. The Who's woods Raptors.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
Yeah, they released the they released an eagle over the
weekend and so that's really cool.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
So that's on our Facebook page.
Speaker 1 (17:46):
Yes, check that out. Head on over to the Bruce
Companies Facebook page. It's a pretty cool video of the
of the eagle being related. How massive.
Speaker 3 (17:54):
Yeah, and read the text too, because there's a really
great story about this eagle.
Speaker 1 (17:58):
Yes, yeah, I know what I'm doing.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (18:01):
So, and I will just mention too before we go
that it is end of summer and we are, you know,
getting ready to transition the garden center over into fall
and holiday.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
So lots of things are on sale.
Speaker 3 (18:14):
Perennials are thirty percent off except for the hardy bums,
and then nursery stock is forty percent off. If you
buy three or more trees and shrubs any combination, you
save sixty or fifty percent, and if you buy five
or more you save sixty percent. More you buy, the
more you say.
Speaker 1 (18:32):
Wow, yeah, we know where we're going after Yeah.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
So, if you've got some spaces, or you want to
add some fall color, or you want to develop a
new bed with the ground as warm as it is,
and with not looking for a frost in the next
couple of weeks, there's plenty of time for plants to establish.
Just pick up some root stimulator on your when you're
checking out, and you'd be good to go and plant.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
You'd be silly not to fill up a cart today. Yeah,
absolutely to you can. I see people do this where
they push one of the flatbeds forward and they bring one.
Speaker 3 (19:03):
We had somebody a couple of weeks ago with thirty
five not thirty five carts, well thirty five things.
Speaker 1 (19:09):
Items on its thirty five carts.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
That would be a lot of I don't think we
have that many cars.
Speaker 1 (19:15):
He's got every single.
Speaker 2 (19:16):
One, every single cart in the store as well.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
You can be that person. Maybe you just want to
use one, but they've got those for you. Right at
the Middleton card some the Bruce Company twenty eight thirty
partment of street. That's went a thirty partment street. What
a great day to get on and mentioned too all
the different events going on. You can find those on
Facebook and social media of course their website Bruce Company
dot com. Speaking of their Facebook page, definitely check out
that whose Woods Raptor Center video that they shared on
(19:40):
the Bruce Company's Facebook page. It is pretty amazing to
look at. Looking forward to reading that story as well, Lisa,
it's always fantastic hanging out. Enjoy his beautiful day you
as well. Shine news comes your way next here on
