subscribed right, and let's get toa Cruise Show Real ninety two three as
new home for hip Hop the GreatestHits Hulu original right now on Hulu.
Austin Crude, one of the starsof the show, is here with us.
Let's get it. Thank you forhaving me, Thank you for being
here. Crew. Where's that from? What? What? What does that
(00:21):
originate from? Rot? I'm prettysure that's French. Yeah, I'm like
west right, no exactly. Sosomebody asks it's just crude, but I
feel like it's like clute or somethinglike that, you know what I mean.
Yeah, yeah, I feel likeit's like on some that's the booze
way to say it. But mybrother did a twenty three and me and
I think we're from like West Africasomewhere, and maybe see, I don't
(00:44):
know, I'm gonna have to domy own twenty three and me, I
know they're selling our information and sellingstuff, so I don't know, I'm
gonna have to get on the front, on the front. Guess if you
had a guess, like maybe Idon't know, maybe like can you maybe
maybe not, just you know, during those chests, and you know,
if it's French, you gotta belike either Senegal or Rygeria also has that
French influence too, right, becauseI think Nigeria is a French name,
like they named it, is itreally? Yeah, we're on products of
(01:11):
public school here though, you knowwhat, a few us fell through the
cracks. But those tests tell thetruth right and very surprising stuff. Gurtia,
What did you find out? Ihave a black cousin in Africa named
Willie? Oh wow, did yougo and visit? Not yet, Okay,
it's time. He's like a sixcousin, So I don't know.
Oh, you gotta document that. You gotta make like a whole little TikTok
(01:34):
documentary about that is funny right there? For real. I watched that,
you know the greatest. His congratulationslooks great man, thank you the show.
I'm having fun. It was justyeah, yeah, yeah, like
it was. It was great filmin the movie it's on Hulu and Disney
plus. Now. I had areal good time because I'm a musician myself,
(01:56):
so you know, I'm playing aDJ and I now I'm not DJ,
so I had to get right withthe tools and all the technologies right
right exactly. And my character Morriswas based on Larry Levin, who was
a Studio fifty four DJ, andso I did like some research on that
and was like, okay, youknow they had the back then they had
(02:17):
like the one ear. They stillgot him sometimes the one ear headphone.
And I was like, Okay, you know what, this is actually kind
of dope because you can really justlike hear what's going on. But I
feel like you're a DJ on setto help you. There's mannerisms and stuff
like that. There was a techspecialist, so like helping helping us with
like tech analog speakers, knobs, turntables. Daniel Daniel was his name,
(02:44):
Daniel person dude, Daniel. Yeah, manah. You know I call it
the show right because it has thesemoments where like it can totally be broken
up as a show, right themovie. Oh, there's there's these certain
moments that that just live in themovie and really resonate with a lot of
people. I'm sure, right andmakes sense. You saw the show and
it really did something movie. Yeah, I love it, man. I
just love the way that collect recordsand all that. But it's just you
(03:07):
know, music is about moments intime, and music is about moods and
all those different things in the waythat that's portrayed in this movie was done
so well because it does. Everysong will take you back to a break
up. Every song will take youback to the best day of life or
whatever. And man, you guysreally portray that in the movie. And
I love what a great bff youwere to thank you in real life,
(03:29):
talkers, that's just acting. Youknow. I am a good friend.
I'm not gonna lie. You alwayscount on me. I'm always be there.
I'm gonna tell you the truth. You know what I mean? Some
people, you know, thank you, thank you? No. And I
was gonna ask you, like thesimilarities between your like actual self and Morris,
Like, what were those similarities? You know? Well, me and
Morris are both musicians into music,I think. I mean, I'm I'm
(03:53):
an engineer, I'm a producer, but like I'm mainly an artist, whereas
he is more on the engineering side, right producing side. You know,
he loves the club. I lovethe club. He is a confidante to
his friends. I'm a confidant tomy friend. Are you good at keeping
secrets? Oh? I'm going tokeep it. I used to not be
not all right. I used tonot be ahead to grow in that area.
(04:14):
But you know, then you getin the industry a little bit,
and you know, you start tolearn you gotta be careful exactly. So
my boundaries went up in that. But yeah, I think I'm real good
atkeeping secrets and I'm real good atgiving giving just a spiritual advice. You
know, I'm a pastor's kids.I came from the church, and I
feel like, you know, whenit comes to the Bible, when it
comes to just how to how tolevel yourself out, I feel like I'm
(04:39):
good with that. Yeah, I'mgood with that. You know that.
At one point I was on YouTubeand I went down a rabbit hole with
pastors and their delivery. I lovethe delivery that pastors have. Do you
can you turn on that delivery?Oh? Yes, what does it sound
like? It's Father God? Youknow when you when when they when they
right now? Right? Take yourtime? Oh y'all ain't hearing me?
(04:59):
Whenever whenever they don't say something inBlack church, whenever they not what because
I feel like in white church it'slike, okay, they respectful, they
watch it. But it's like youalmost gotta interrupt with take your time all
right, and it's like, oh, y'all, hear just to you know,
but God and when you and he'lltake you right up. I know
you got to get to the game. I know you got to get to
the game. But y'all, buty'all, this is the game right now.
(05:21):
You know what perform right exactly,it's a performance out there and they
speaking to the people in the bathto the back of the back. Absolutely.
Like my dad, he used tosay that, like basically the Bible,
like he would take he it's modernday church, so you know iPad,
he would take his eypied out,but he would make sure that he
has a Bible because it's like theold school. They like that just for
(05:41):
the aesthetics. Got to have thereal Bible out so they get bound the
right leather bounds, the leather bounds, the little gold lining on the pages.
But then you know he's reading fromthe iPad. But I don't know,
they like it better. Yeah, they have to see it right,
and he's giving the people what theywant and what they need. Yeah,
absolutely, Yeah. You do yourown nails or you pay like nine hundred
dollars to get those done. Youknow, I'm paying, like honestly,
it's like, shout out to Kiku. She's from Japan. Noah Galvin,
(06:09):
who last time I was here,I was here for book Smart. He
was in Books Smart and we wereat Billy Lawd's house celebrating her birthday and
I saw his nails. I waslike, who did your nails? And
Noah got me that's right. Yeahthey look great, man game Now like
that's crazy, thank you. Ifeel like the boys aren't really doing like
nails like that. And when theydo, they step they keeping it like
(06:30):
they keeping it simple. I'm tryingto look like the future like this this
the sharp shape. I was like, I want to look like a panther,
Like I want to feel like apanther, and so she gave me
this shape. Yeah, I pickedthe colors. Look going crazy? You
trying to be on that rock starstuff. Hey, try that nail.
They're gonna make fun of you untilthey do it. That's the thing.
That's the thing, the real quicklook a look at that metallic yo blind
(06:53):
hurts your eye? Hurts your eye? Okay, now yeah, going back
to just you know, being aDJ being in a church. And you
know, what's the greatest thing aboutbeing a DJ in the movie? You
know, honestly get into film somany party scenes and stuff like that.
Like I think a lot of thetime when in a heavy movie like that,
(07:15):
you you know, are always youknow, in this dramatic moment and
stuff. But I got to havefun. And you know, it's funny
because it's like you you really dohave a party while you're filming. Like
it's like it's not like they justgot the music off and everything like that.
So yeah, it was it wasI think that that was like the
best part of it for me.Person. What's the toughest part about filming
(07:36):
a movie like this? Is it? Yeah, I hear there's a lot
of waiting, yes, in betweenscenes, so in the ass, right,
But like, what, what's thetoughest part Is it focusing on something
emotional? Is it having a badday and having to completely leave that at
the door and do your job?Yeah, I mean for a movie like
(07:57):
this. And there was another moviethat I was in also on uh oh,
it might not be on It mightbe on Peacock They slash them.
It's like when you are in anemotional space and you're trying to create space
for the other actor to have thattime. It's like you have to get
on their level of heaviness and connectionwith what's going on. And I think
(08:22):
that that can be a little difficultwith uh, you know, street noise
and things like that, and youknow, it's I don't want to be
that type of person that just staysin the moment a method and you know,
so I try to you know, come out of it between takes and
you know, talk to people andstuff like that. But I think I've
gained a little bit of a masteryof getting back into it. Yeah,
(08:43):
have you ever encountered that where youhave to speak to an actor but you
you're not on camera, and youstill have to speak to him as if
he's his character, she's her character. I have I have? Is that
rough? I was? It's nottoo rough because honestly, so I was
in this movie with Bacon. Theyslash them and Kevin is a consummate professional,
(09:05):
and yeah, for real, honestly, it's not playing with Kevin Bacon,
and you know, like he wasplaying this dude. So basically it
was about like a gay conversion camp. But people are like getting killed at
this gay conversion camp and like kidafter kid, and it's like, all
right, well, who's next isit? Is it the counselor's killing it?
Is it the students killing him?And he has to be this kind
(09:26):
of like weird cult leader esque typeperson, so he didn't. I think
he intentionally kept a distance between usand him, but then it was like
on the side, he was likesay like little things like talk about his
Marvel experience, because I'm trying tobe a Marvel. That's like my dreams
to be a Marvel. So likeI asked him about some Marvel stuff.
(09:46):
He's like so nice and even Imean after I was on this other show
called Your Mother with his wife KiaSedgwick, so yes, yes, thank
you. So like we spent sometime at his house and like we talked
for like hours and he's just thenicest dude. But it's like I could
tell him at his house versus himin that role. So it's like you
(10:07):
can really see when people are likein the moment, and how refreshing is
that when you stumble upon like actorsor even just anybody in the industry that
like is willing to share that informationbecause we know how it is wisdom,
you know, it's great. Ilove it. I think the first person
(10:28):
that I ever worked with in generalwas Donald Glover because that was on Atlanta
and I was black Justin Bieber onHilarious, Oh my gosh, thank you,
and that was my first ever TVshow. That was my first ever
anything going on set like that wasmy first ever anything job. Thank you,
Thank you so much. But Inever really got a chance because I
(10:48):
was a guest star and I waslike really young at that time. I
was like nineteen or twenty, LikeI never really got a chance to really
sit down with him. But Idid sit with Brian Tyree Henry like in
those other rooms, and you know, they will every single person that I've
worked with that's on like da caliber, And I'm blessed to be like a
part of incredible movies with incredible people. Olivia Wilde, all of them.
They will literally just give me thekeys. Mark, Yeah, they trust,
(11:11):
they trust, they trust me.Like Mark tond Ray, He's an
African director who worked on Daybreak andhe literally we was just standing there and
he was like, you know, you can get direct to if if you
want to. It's really just simpleyou just line up the shots and you
come here. You just do itall today and you know what, right,
he playing it down. But youknow then that opened me up,
(11:35):
like dang, I could be adirector. So yeah, just a thought.
He inserted that thought. The thoughtthe scene in itself is enabling you
to do even more things real.Yeah, what do you want to do
for Marvel? Do you have likean idea? Literally? My dream is
to be like a pet Crawler orsomebody. I want to be like Nightcrawler.
Paint me blue, put contacts inmy eyes. I want to be
like a I like when I wasa kid. I always love Spider Man
(11:58):
and Nightcrawler and inflexible, like peoplewho put their legs over their heads,
you know, and having powers whereit's like their attack moves. It's kind
of a dance move exactly what youknow. But I've always been into that.
So I'm waiting on that moment.I know it's gonna happen. I
(12:20):
know it's gonna happen. I'm manifestingit. Yeah. Yeah, man,
Your Pack is the song as wellthat you have. Yes Pack my new
single, y'all gotta go get that. Let's go. We're gonna play it
in the clubs. We're getting nice, you know. My uh So,
I've started to really grow on TikTok. And at first, when TikTok first
dropped, I was like, allright, what's TikTok? Like that was
(12:41):
the first time when I was like, all right, what is this movie?
We just lost mine? We justtransitioned from like you know, Twitter
and everything. Now yeah, Ig has videos now, but now all
your videos are real and all ofthe algorithm stuff, and you know,
even now it's like switching algorithms.People have all these following and then all
right, the lights, the commentsthat isn't and that people telling me I
(13:03):
ain't even seen seeing you in myfeet anymore. You know what, That's
fine because we're gonna organically. Nothing'sbought, Okay, nothing is. We're
gonna organically grow. I'm gonna startperforming out here in these LA streets because
I'm from Atlanta, so you know, uh yeah, pack Pack is coming
out and the video on the waythat's right. What made this the single
for you? Well? I producedit in my uh in my like home
(13:26):
studio set up, and uh ohthat's just how I was feeling. You
know, I've been singing a longtime and my go then my cover was
it went like viral and went crazy, and then Jake come in and Jake
reposted it, and then I didceilings and then Lizzie McAlpine noticed it and
(13:46):
I'm like, okay, cool.So now that y'all don't got the vocals,
it's time to just get the barsoff, It's time to get a
vibe off. I want to bein the club. I want to,
you know, because I love theclub. I love to be in the
party. I love shines, Ilove you know, I love those that
vibe. So I was like, you know what, let me just switch
it up from doing singing all thetime and showing off vocal vocals to you
(14:09):
know, having a pack. Isthere anyone you would want to party with?
Oh wow, any celebrity you wantto just go crazy with? Yeah,
okay, I feel like it's crazy. I feel like it's gonna be
like all right, all right, chilling. I ain't even that. I
feel like they're gonna have me,like my eye is gonna be real.
There's a line in the song whereI'm like, came in here Clinton,
it came a little gieky, likeI'm gonna be real geek if I if
(14:31):
I hang on zy, I said, have you ever got to I got
to church hungover? Yes, Ihave, I have. I mean even
like, Okay, now, allright, y'all for everybody in the industry,
we'll can chill oud. Okay,I am a professional. Y'all can
ask about me around here in thesestreets. That being said, you know,
(14:52):
I've even done a little bit ofwork on some movies and TV shows,
high and stuff. You know, sometimes you just you just gotta be
in your zone, in your spacewhatever, you know, right, whatever
it takes, you know. Butyou know, I was in that era.
Now I'm in my sober era.Actually, I'm in my keifer.
I think they call it probiotic.I'm doing goat milk, I'm doing spinach
(15:13):
smoothies and stuff like that. I'mnot playing because so I'm young, and
I feel like I'm a little spoiledby my I mean, my boy hasn't
really fluctuated, and all of myfamily is pretty fit. But my dad's
side, my dad's side, Godbless them. Don't y'all don't get mad
at me that that's not got thebeaty beaty. Sure they got the beaty
(15:35):
beaties. So I'm like, Okay, I am not gonna end up like
this. Yes, I'm just likeif I get my if I get it
now in my twenties, I'm gonnabe good if I get these habits down
because I don't really need it now, but when I do need it,
then I'm gonna know. You knowwhat, that sugar was not for me,
the the you know, getting gettingmy palate good. So where it's
(15:56):
like I would used to eat cucumbersand like what is this? God couldn't
have put some season in this? But now it's like I like cucumbers,
I like zucchini. I like thesethings. All my seasoning PACs because I
like myself a little seasoning pact.Right, salt free, add the salt
yourself, Himalayan pink salt, Agood stuff. Add the salt yourself,
right, That's what I'm talking about. Dobo, I got salt free,
(16:18):
Adobo, I got salt free.Uh, Tony's I got salt free,
Magic Chef. And I'll add thesalt after, because it's like, all
right, salt and sugar them thetwo. That's the hot and the cold.
That's the beaties, that's the bloodpressure. Man. So it's like,
you know, I'm really just tryingto get right with that and on
the peloton every morning, dance classevery night. So yeah, man,
yea, are you keeping up withall these rap beefs Chris Brown and Quavo,
(16:41):
Drake versus everyone including my mom?Really? They talking about They talking
about Metro Boom and Nick Fury andDrake and Thanos and I don't know what
happened to make it's like that theboon dust What did he do to make
you so mad? You know? What? What did he do to make
him so mad? You know? And then Yay just went on like jealle
(17:06):
boy, oh yeah and premiered thejoint yes, yes, and you're talking
about you know, future and themwas linking up kind of. I don't
know what's going on. It's lovefor all of them, all love to
collaborate. So messy though, Likeit's it's great though, for real they
messy. Yeah, it's gotten messire. Yay also said he wants a threesome
with Michelle Obama. So I justsaw that before I even walked in here.
(17:26):
I just thought I was like,oh lord, Michelle into it.
She's like, how did not getin? And was minding her business,
right, she was minding her Bertlike and so when it comes going back
to the movie, I'm talking toGarcia about this. I the very ending
I gave me very much an inceptiontype of feel where they're like, Okay,
(17:49):
are they going to end up together? Do they actually rekindle their love?
What do you think? Do youthink Carrie and David end up together?
I think this is spoiler alert.I feel like they do. Actually
it's not even a spoiler because it'sopen ended. I feel like they do
because it's like I want to believein life, you know what I mean,
and that you can be and Idon't know you know really about reincarnation
(18:15):
or whatever like that, but Ido think that you know, souls and
spirits life after life do meet upagain? Like have you ever met somebody
and just thought, like I feellike I know you, I know you?
Oh yeah. Or maybe there's likea cuisine that's kind of left field,
that's cultural to somewhere else, butyou like, I really like this
CUIs like this cuisine feels like almosthome to me. Or you visit a
(18:38):
place and it's like I should livehere for a time, you know.
I feel like we have even ifit's in your genetics, maybe it's like
an ancestral connection to somebody that livesin this place or something like that.
I feel like that's real. SoI would like to think that they they
end up together again and they findeach other. Yeah, at the end
of filming for the Greatest Hits,is it is it a cry fast?
(19:02):
Is everyone hugging? Is it acelebration? Then there's a rap party,
right, Yeah, there's a rapparty. So we did. We it
was like COVID the end of COVIDwhen we shot it, so we couldn't
have an official like Disney because it'sSearchlights. So search Light is technically Disney
and Disney don't play, and luHulu don't play. Disney don't play.
(19:22):
Search Light don't play. They're nothaving no COVID not everybody getting tested.
You doing the nose and the mouth, and you're doing this, and you're
doing that. We have a COVIDparty. Were we having a COVID party
and COVID is not invited? Sowe kind of like orchestrated our own kind
of like a rap party outside andit was it was lit. It was
(19:44):
really underground rap, right, alittle underground it was all Halloween, so
like after and it was really nice. I think after a movie like that,
especially, it's like you gotta havethe fun. Yeah, and it
was. It was fun during aswell. But I think, you know,
especially Lucy's Lucy's Duty's to the tothe role and Justin's duties to the
(20:04):
role. It's like, okay, now it's time to just let Yeah.
It's so grief heavy too that you'rejust like, yeah, this is a
lot. Yeah, it's a lot. So you know, it was nice
to have them mom. We hadtacos there, catered Oh right, it
was cool. It was nice, good times, right times. Hey.
One thing I want to say forpeople that haven't seen the movie too,
(20:25):
it's such an La movie. It'sthe record stores you know you're familiar with,
Yeah, Civil Coffee, all thoseplaces like that, Like that's all
La. So if you want to, you know, see a good movie
and then just be transported to allaround the city. Here, such a
good LA movie. I love it. Oh yeah, it's a love letter
to La. Yeah. And beingfrom LA, we appreciate that with you
know, seeing that. Oh yeah, it even taught me because I'm from
(20:47):
Atlanta, like born and bred andI came out here like twenty nineteen,
and it was even teaching me likemore about La, like where the spots
are, where to go Chinatown versusk Town versus Jaytown, and where to
go Like I'm not even and likeI think, I'm like I'm about to
move. I think I might goover to Jay Town. See what's going
on? That's right? Yeah,but yeah, like l A, l
A is a vibe. There's nothinglike l A. Honestly, LA's wild,
(21:11):
right, Yeah, Atlanta, thoughit's a different speed too. It
is Atlanta. It is every singlebar got hookah, every single bar,
every bar you can cvs out there. Why no, for real, it's
like everywhere to the point where Icame out here and I was like,
okay, where the hookah spots? But Blue Moon Hookah Lines that's where I
had my birthday last time. Heyit's downtown. Yeah, downtown, you've
(21:33):
been there. Yeah, it's lateand you could be b y O B
took me out. Was my firsttime I went. I was like,
yeah, you can bring your ownbottle. They do sell you the mixers,
g they shell you the bucket adviceand mis for like fifteen bucks and
you bring your own bottle. Youbring your own bottle, bring your own
bottle. B Yeah, I was. I was. I had a post
made to bottle in there. Iwas like, wait, what post to
(21:56):
the joint? And then I said, well, you can bring up bottle.
Yeah I was. I got onpostmas. I was like, yeah,
I need that. Yeah, Iwant to go to Atlanta so bad
man. Yeah, it's crazy outthere. The food is so crazy.
Yeah, that's right, that's right. Oh my god. And you know
what, now that we're on thetopic of food and health and stuff,
(22:18):
slutty Vegan in Atlanta because I'm notI'm not a vegan. I'm gonna listen,
I'm gonna eat animal y'all. I'msorry, but Slutty Vegan is the
is like, it's Atlanta based, black owned, and it started as a
food truck and now they got likea real restaurant. It is a burger.
Their bacon is like bacon for real. I've never seen vegan bacon look
(22:41):
like bacon. And now it's sobacony that they don't put their bacon in
grocery stores because it's like nobody's doingbacon like this. It's bacon like it's
crazy. So yeah, but likeeven like the lemon pepper wings, the
wet lemon pepper, like the wing, like that's the thing is even chains
right, like when yuh they hitdifferent in Atlanta, because in Atlanta,
(23:03):
they ain't they got it. Theyalready know how to play. They already
know not to play. At themoment at yeah, I was like,
I'm hungry now. Yeah, likeI'm actually probably gonna get at my far
words to describe it Atlanta. Ohmy god, lick high fast saved and
(23:27):
lucratives. Wow. Yeah, Okay, Now they're out there making that bag
in Atlanta. Yeah, they're makingthat bag. But you got to know
how to get it because I'm antell on Atlanta a little bit. You
know. It took me kind ofas a kid. You know, everybody
wanted to be a Disney Channel star. Everybody wanted to be and stuff like
that. And I was a songwriterand I was hosting uh sessions, like
in my bedroom producing doing artists developmentat like fifteen. Mean, while I
(23:51):
was developing artists, wow, AndI feel like there was a lot of
people through contracts my way and stuff, and they get real competitive in Atlanta.
They gonna try to get you inAtlanta, So you gotta know what
bag, Like DJ Kellis said, sometimes you gotta yeah to get like the
better bag. And I feel likeit wasn't until I went to New York
(24:12):
because I went to n YU.It wasn't until I went to New York.
Cloud David School, shout out CloudDavid shout out everybody that I got
that legitimacy of like, all right, we're gonna pay you this, We're
gonna do that, do that.So it's like Atlanta, you got it.
The way that it moves, Ifeel like it's more uh texts text
(24:33):
bag versus New York and LA islike the email bag. Yeah yeah,
yeah. Are you saying like, don't jump, don't jump at the first
offer, don't jump at the firstoffer, Like I mean, know yourself,
and you know somebody that might be, you know, good in the
game a little bit, they mightnot be the only one that's good in
the game that's going to co signwhat you're doing. Slash believe in you
(24:56):
