Speaker 1 (00:02):
Talking Golf at TPC Wisconsin is on the air. Talking
Golf is brought to you by American Family Insurance, Oak
Bark Place, Wild Rock Golf Club, Mercedes Benz of Madison,
TPC Wisconsin University, Ridge Golf Course, Ridge Top Exteriors, Southern
Italy Imports and Novada Bobs. Now from TPC Wisconsin in Madison.

(00:28):
Here's your foursome for Talking Golf. Wisconsin Golf Hall of Famer,
Dennis Tizziani, Wisconsin Broadcaster Hall of Famer, Paul Brown, Wisconsin's
premier golf reporter, Gary Demado, and Mike Heller.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
And we welcome you to TPC Wisconsin.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
This is our thirteenth year, I believe before doing the
math right, I've been part of the group for a
couple of years, but happy to be back with you.
Paul Brown is next to me, Dennis Tizziani sits between.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
We get to Steve Stricker in just a moment.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
Let me let's begin by talking about what we've seen
over the last two weeks. Dennis, and that is Rory
McElroy returning and getting the career Grand Slam. It had
been in his eleventh year of trying to get that
fourth major title, the career Grand Slam than Justin Thomas
wins this weekend. So the PGA Tour is back with

(01:24):
a full flourish, and Rory's a very popular champion, well
for some with the head nation.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
No, he's a good boy. I mean he's a good player.
But you know that the people that he has to
compete against in the last five years is totally different
than ten years ago. I mean, now there's twenty five
people who can win. Yes, Tiger Woods, there was ten.
Jack Nicholas, there was three. Yeah, and it's gonna get

(01:57):
you know, Nursa. You can see what's happening coming in
He's played that are coming from the other tours, eighteen under,
twenty under.

Speaker 5 (02:04):
I mean, it's unreal.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
I'm happy for him and happy for his family. He's
happy and he got the other thing squared away with
that whatsoever her name is there?

Speaker 6 (02:13):
Yeah, how about the genuine emotion, That's what I loved.

Speaker 5 (02:17):
That was unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
Yeah, it was a spectacular finish. So let's bring in
Steve Stricker, Champions Tour host here from the NFAM Championship
on your own course here coming up not too.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Far down the road.

Speaker 3 (02:30):
Within the next six or seven weeks Steve, thanks for
coming back on with us. It's always good to hear
your voice and welcome to the show.

Speaker 7 (02:40):
Yeah, thanks coming me on. Congrets on another year to
you guys, So good luck this year and good season.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Steve. Let me let me ask you. Let me begin
where we began.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
That's talking about Rory and that win at the Masters
two weeks ago.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Justin Thomas won this week.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
We'll get to that in a little bit, but watching
Rory win and Paul just referenced it the genuine emotion
because he carried a lot of that for this last
ten plus years of trying to get that fourth major title,
the one that he didn't have, and that was at Augusta.
What did you what did you glean from watching what
he did in Augusta two weeks ago.

Speaker 7 (03:23):
Yeah, I've obviously never been in that situation, and I
can only imagine but the amount of pressure that he
would have each and every year coming to us to
try to win the band Slam. You know, now, he's
only one of six players to ever have done that,
so obviously he had pressure from that. He started missing

(03:46):
scots they would never miss right, the shot at thirteen,
the one hundred and twenty three yard wedge at the
final hole, and regulation shows you how much pressure he
was under to try to get it done, so, you know,
hats off to him, right he would hit those shots
and then came back and hit unbelievable shots, you know

(04:06):
at fifteen, the shot underneath the tree, drawn around the
trees onto the green to you know, to have a
look at eagles. So pretty impressive stuff. And really the
most impressive what I watched was the extra the sudden
death hole on eighteen. To stand up there and pipe
it down the fairway after feeling like he just gave

(04:29):
the tournament away. I'm sure, you know, he probably couldn't
have been feeling too good about himself at the time,
but to stand up there and to hit two unbelievable
shots and then to actually and golf has a funny
way of doing that, doesn't it. Where he hit it
to a link that he's been struggling with and he

(04:50):
had to dig deep to make that you know, four
foot or whatever.

Speaker 8 (04:53):
It was.

Speaker 7 (04:53):
But pretty pretty cool stuff. And it was high high theater,
you know, I mean, it was fun to watch.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
Yeah, the emotions of it, in the drama of that
Sunday afternoon. That was sports at its best. And I
would think from your chair, and we'll get to Denis
on this too, watching him exert that mental toughness. Most
of us have no concept of what that's like in
that scenario. And I think that with the emotion and

(05:24):
the mental toughness that you just alluded to that he
had to show on the seventy third hole, I thought
that was the most impressive of anything he did in
the entire tournament.

Speaker 7 (05:34):
Yeah, for sure. And then you know that four footer,
you know, he just missed one a little bit longer
than that in regulation. And then you go back to
last year the US Open where he missed a couple
of little ones coming down the stretch where he could
have you know, won that and Bryson ended up winning that.

(05:54):
But yeah, so I mean literally hit it to the distance,
like said, where he had to erase all those negative
thoughts and just try to tap it down the hill
and win the golf tournament. So yeah, it's pretty impressive

(06:15):
what he ended up doing. And you know, probably the
lid is off now, you know, I mean I can
see him, you know, winning you know, multiple majors this year,
and it just has to be a huge relief off
off of his shoulders.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
Absolutely, Well, let's get an update on you, Steve. Obviously,
the listeners to this show, they have a great affinity
for you, We all do. Uh, And I'll let you
give us an update on where you are from a
standpoint of being able to play.

Speaker 7 (06:48):
Yeah, good question, that's a great question.

Speaker 5 (06:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (06:54):
You know, it started off as a back problem around
the end of last year and the first part of
this year, went out to New York, got some shots
my lower back that seemed to have really helped, although
I haven't been playing a lot of golf, and then
all of a sudden a reoccurring neck issue popped up

(07:16):
while I was just literally just not lifting weights. I
was stretching a lot, just trying to get some mobility back.
And woke up one day and I was in a
lot of pain in my shoulder, down my arm, tingling
in my arm, tingling in my fingers. And that lasted
for about six weeks And got an MRI about two

(07:38):
to three weeks ago, probably three weeks ago now and
shows these two balging discs that I had about twelve
thirteen years ago, got a little bit worse and basically
just pinching a nerve and I had this nerve pain,
but the killer has been really the pain has gone away.

(07:59):
The last couple of weeks, I got some Corizon shots
in my neck. The pain has gone away, but it's
really the strength has been the challenge. In that short
bit of time. I have lost quite a bit of
trice up strength and grip strength from that pinch nerve.

Speaker 9 (08:17):
And now I'm.

Speaker 7 (08:19):
Working every day, really just working on the gun show,
trying to get my arms bigger and stronger. So it's
you know, I'm seeing slight improvements in my trice up strength.
My hand strength has been an issue, and I'm starting
hit balls again. I've been playing. I've played the last

(08:40):
three days. It's not it's not very good, but it's
I'm out there trying to get stronger and you know,
trying to go through the process of.

Speaker 9 (08:51):
Getting back Steve.

Speaker 6 (08:54):
That begs the question you really, at this point then
wouldn't have any knowledge of what status you may have
when it comes tournament time here, Huh.

Speaker 7 (09:04):
I'll be playing am fan for sure. I'm hoping to play,
you know, in the.

Speaker 9 (09:12):
Middle of May.

Speaker 7 (09:13):
There's a couple of major tournaments on the champions Tour
won the region's tradition, and then the Senior PGA out
at Congressional and then and then hopefully I get to
try to get back and play in those and then
if I don't, but I will play am FAM if
I've got one arm and not the other one. So

(09:36):
it's uh, I'll be there, but I'm hoping to get
some reps under my belt before that.

Speaker 5 (09:43):
Steve, what are you hearing?

Speaker 6 (09:45):
What are you hearing about the team concept that's going
to be the showcase so to speak at the AMFAM Championship.
Are the players loving it and they're teaming up? How's
that all working out?

Speaker 7 (10:00):
Yeah, it's been great. Guys are super excited. I think
the course is gonna lend itself perfect to a team competition.
You know, it's challenging off the teas, as we all know.
You know, there's a lot of penalty areas on the side.
You know, there's some holes that are wider than there

(10:21):
were before. There's some that are in there or than
than the old Cherokee course. But I think it's going
to be a great team competition golf course and we're
gonna have fun with it. It's it's best ball and
then scramble then back to a best ball.

Speaker 9 (10:39):
So it's.

Speaker 7 (10:41):
Guys are super excited.

Speaker 9 (10:43):
They're you know, we've got.

Speaker 7 (10:44):
A great field lining up already, you know, guys that
are really looking forward to coming to play. So I
can't wait. And it should be should be a fun,
fun week there at Keeps to Wisconsin.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
We're talking to Steve Struck your eyes, Steve, I would
imagine that that this would feel almost like your first
tournament out at University Ridge when you were the host,
even though you weren't playing then, but coming here to
your course of course that you designed, of course that
you're at all the time. Is there an excitement, a nervousness,

(11:18):
how would you describe that?

Speaker 7 (11:21):
Yeah, I think a little bit of everything, nervousness and excitement.
You know, we all wanted to showcase really well I know,
Dennis does I know I do, And you know we
wanted to play right. We wanted to be where the
players have a good time and you know, the competition

(11:42):
should be it should be great, and we want the
spectators to come out and support, you know, our foundation
and give them back to local charities and the Children's hospital.
Children's Hospital in Madison there. So yeah, all really good
things continue on and I think going to a new
venue this year just adds a little bit more excitement

(12:04):
and a team competition I think just changes things up
for the golf fan just to experience something different. I
think you'll see the players have a lot more fun
with it. You know, there'll be a lot more smiles,
I think, and there'll be.

Speaker 9 (12:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (12:23):
I just think it's I think we're shaping up to
have a great, great week there steve.

Speaker 6 (12:29):
All of us who play it, and we get an
opportunity to see, for an example, the different situations on
certain holes and that kind of thing. Depending on where
they put those teas, there's going to be some real
competitive situations where guys are going to have to hit
the ball a long way in that kind of thing.

(12:49):
Does that go into the setup of the twosomes that
are putting Maybe this guy has this strength, this player
has that strength, that kind of thing, And do you
think they'll play them all the way back because you,
for example, just on hold twelve, if you play that
one all the way back, it's what you need to
hit it about what to sixty or something.

Speaker 7 (13:12):
Sixty two seventy. Yeah, I think I think, and we'll
have some say, at least I'll talk to the to
the tournament staff, the guys who set up the course,
and they've been really good about wanting to know our
feedback and my feedback on where to play certain holes.
So yeah, there's gonna definitely be some strategy involved, depending

(13:37):
on how straight your guy hits it versus you know,
how long he hits it right. You may want to
get one in the fairway and then let the guy
who's got some lengths go back and give it a rip.
So there's gonna be some strategy and I think that's
why this course is gonna be really good for this
start of competition.

Speaker 9 (13:55):
And uh, Mario and Mario.

Speaker 7 (13:58):
Is going to be my teammate, Mari and Donnis Son,
and we were talking about it yesterday already, you know,
like strategy already. So I know other people, once they
go around it for the first time, they're gonna they're
gonna strategize with their partner and come up with come
up with what's best for them. But yeah, there's a
lot of decision making to go around around there.

Speaker 3 (14:21):
Well, let's get it set up to your advantage, fairly
familiar with your playing partner too, Steve.

Speaker 2 (14:29):
It's good to hear your voice.

Speaker 3 (14:30):
I'm glad that to hear the news that you hope
to be playing soon. And we're all hoping for you
and praying for you, and I hope to see you
back out and playing in this tournament and the tournaments
that proceeded as well.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
We're thinking about you.

Speaker 9 (14:43):
Yeah, I appreciate it.

Speaker 7 (14:44):
You guys have a good rest of the show.

Speaker 2 (14:46):

I don't know what carried the program, paid for the
lights it is.

Speaker 6 (18:45):
It is amazing, though, thirteen years clad to be with
you for that long, it's really yeah.

Speaker 3 (18:49):
Kidding, left hander. You've been sitting next to that left
hander for thirteen years.

Speaker 2 (18:53):
Oh, poor guy, No kidding.

Speaker 6 (18:54):
I stepped into it.

Speaker 5 (18:56):
Should have known better tissue right up?

Speaker 3 (19:00):
Ton of a director for the MFAM Championship. Now six
weeks out, Nate Pocrast joins us on the line. Nate,
we talked to fair amount last year during the show.
But now that you're you're six weeks out, maybe you
want to know that, maybe there's a countdown clock working
for you or not.

Speaker 2 (19:16):
But what's the.

Speaker 3 (19:17):
Biggest challenge when you get within a month and a
half of a tournament at a new venue. As I
mentioned to Steve earlier, it's almost like the first year again,
because this is a new venue for you.

Speaker 15 (19:30):
Yeah, good evening, guys. Yeah, it's I certainly don't enjoy
looking at a countdown clock right now. Don't need that
at this point. Yeah, it's it is basically starting over.
While our team certainly understands golf and it knows how
to run a PGA Tour Champions event, it's it's all
new logistics. So everything is new every day, from from

(19:53):
how we're designing both on the golf course itself to
off the course and all the logistical elements for there.
So everything has our attention. There's nothing, nothing on autopilot
at this point. But today was you know, there's the
day one occurred a long time ago on planning the
NFAM champ for here at TPC. But day one occurred today.

(20:17):
We had nine semi loads of equipment showing up at
the golf course. Certainly wasn't the nicest a day, Mother
nature didn't, wasn't the warmest of welcomes, a little chilly,
a little breezy, But we got all that equipment showing up,
and uh, we're getting ready to build all our structures
in place and and keep the planning process moving.

Speaker 6 (20:38):
Hey, let's talk about the bleachers in that kind of thing,
everybody kind of wondering where they're going to be, so
give us a perspective on how it's going to look
when they're up.

Speaker 15 (20:48):
Yeah, it's you know, first off, everything fans became accustomed
to at University Ridge are going to get rebuilt out
at TPC Wisconsin. Some of the holes may be a
little bit different on where bleachers or hospitality venues are going,
but all of that gets rebuilt. So from a fan experience,
it'll it'll certainly exist at a baseline level the same,

(21:11):
but we'll continue to enhance it expand some areas. But
those finishing holes, I know Steve's talked about it before
and other conversations. Fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, those four final
holes will really have a significant structural build from bleachers,
the sponsor hospitality to just a wide variety of venues

(21:34):
that fans can really enjoy golf and some exciting golf
is always exciting in the last four holes, but certainly
TPC sets itself out well, really exciting with the drivel
four and sixteen, a fun, challenging part three seventeen, and
then a great challenge in eighteen finishing, so it'll look
expansive its it'll all be built heavily around the clubhouse area,

(21:59):
but it'll be it'll be a significant build that everybody
will be excited to see in person.

Speaker 3 (22:04):
Nate, we just had Steve Stricker Oniman and talking about
the team format for the first time, two person teams.
You'll play best ball, a scramble, and a best ball
on the three days, and that is different and unique,
and I wonder what the genesis was of that decision
and what the excitement level has been amongst the players
who are committing to be in this tournament.

Speaker 15 (22:25):
Yeah, the conversation started a few years ago from Steve,
you know, just coming off a Ryder Cup and President's
Cup and the amount of success he had captaining those
teams and obviously previously had some time inside the ropes
but serving as captain, as having that success, wanting to
kind of bring that back to the PGA Tour champions

(22:45):
They've had various team formats throughout the years at different
courses and different venues, but it's it's been dormant for
a while and we talked about it makes sense bringing
it back, and with the change in venue, it really
was the right time to, you know, think of it
and at all levels and said, all right, you know,
format change might be the right time. So it really

(23:06):
is that it is the right timing. It's going to
be exciting. I heard Steve make some of the comments
earlier right with the best ball in scramble formats. The
scramble element has never been done on the PGA Tour
Champion so bringing that to like, I think it's going
to be really exciting. We're going to see some low scores,
a lot of birdies, a lot of I think the
players are really getting to be into it. I think

(23:28):
it's going to be fun to see that interaction amongst
the guys. You see that during Ryer Cups and President's Cups,
so now to see that here in person in Madison,
it's going to be really fun. I know Steve can
talk from the player side how they're excited, but I
know from the side too, I'm hearing that as well,
that everyone's excited to see that format plus with a
scrambles it's what you and I do sometimes on a

(23:49):
weekly basis at the charity events. You get to go
through that. So to see that element, to see the
best of the best, to read each other's potts, some
go aggressive, some go safe. I think that's going to
be a ton of fun to watch in person, and
it's really going to make for an exciting tournament.

Speaker 6 (24:05):
Nate, how are you going to move logistics? For an
example of traffic. I know you've made the official announcement,
maybe maybe somebody listening hasn't heard specifically about the parking
and how are you going to get in and out
of the TPC facility based on its location.

Speaker 15 (24:22):
Yeah, the TPC Wisconsin certainly is a unique venue, a
little bit different than University Ridge. But we've got a
lot of partnerships in place at the north side of
Madison and really how we're going to bring everybody in
and out. And as we've previously announced, everybody will park
at Madison College. We've got Badger coach buses that'll bring
everybody right to the front gate. It's a four mile

(24:44):
shuttle less than ten minutes, extremely convenient, and we'll bring
everybody in and out that way. It should make for
a kind of a safe environment, quick environment to get
in and out. Madison Police and other other partners on
the north side have been really great to work work
with on how we'll be able to control that traffic,
but it should make it really convenient. Fans in Wisconsin

(25:06):
certainly understand off site parking, whether you've been to the
Ryder Cupp or the US Open over at Aaron Hills.
That's it's a kind of a part of golf. And
we've got a really good operational plan in place, and
it should make it really convenient for all our fans.

Speaker 6 (25:21):
How are you doing on volunteers? Are you filled up
or do you need people in other areas too?

Speaker 15 (25:27):
Yeah, we talked about it often. Volunteers of the back.

Speaker 4 (25:29):
They care about this tournament and they want to be
here and they're excited about being here, and do we
get tickets and all this sort of stuff. So uh,
and then the big item from my standpoint is national TV.
You know we're going to be out national TV for
we can you know they're suggesting I wear my Pope
uniform for the interview.

Speaker 3 (25:50):
Well, okay, yeah, maybe not No, that would be a
bad idea, would.

Speaker 4 (25:55):
I'm gonna for the interview? But I just think it's
a great They're gonna enjoy the course. It's oh, it's
a tournament course. It was made for this tournament. Although
we have member tees which make it easier, but I
think that they're going to be quite surprised when they
get the team play green positions and also the speed

(26:16):
of the greens. You know, they're going to go around
here because they all hit it pretty straight, you know.
And if they play in that, just like Paul sixty yea,
they play in that, sixty eight hundred and sixty nine
hundred will be plenty. But you know there's another portion.
You know, I'll tell you what American family did.

Speaker 5 (26:36):
Each the team.

Speaker 4 (26:38):
You know, usually I'm going to get three three four,
three hundred bucks or something to win three hundred thousand.

let me ask you, are you already a former president
of the National Golf Writers Association of America or soon
to be former president?

Speaker 9 (30:51):
Well, first of all, can you guys hear me? I'm
I'm just going to take the connection.

Speaker 2 (30:55):
Yeah, we're good. We hear you as perfect.

Speaker 9 (30:57):
Perfect you know I the former Golf Writers Association Association
of America.

Speaker 5 (31:04):
Proble.

Speaker 9 (31:06):
Yeah, yeah, I am, Actually I am. Rec Hoggard took
over for me at the Masters on the Master's Wednesday
before our dinner, So yeah, I'm happy. It was a
nice two year run. I had a good time. But
let's turn it over as someone else and Rex will
do a great job.

Speaker 3 (31:22):
So is that like the Champions dinner? Like did you
decide the menu? Was there an outgoing celebration? And did
do you starve hot dogs and corn on the cob?
Or what did you do?

Speaker 9 (31:33):
I really didn't have much of a role at the dinner.
I last I run ran our last board meeting on
the Monday Masters week and uh and then Wednesday morning
we had our general meeting. We voted for the general membership,
voted for Rex Hoggard and he was installed and I
turned the mic over to him in the media auditorium

(31:54):
room at the Masters, and boys sat down with a
big sigh of relief. Guys, I'm glad it's over.

Speaker 5 (31:59):
Good for you, Gary.

Speaker 6 (32:00):
How many Masters have you been at?

Speaker 9 (32:03):
This was my thirty second Masters and my favorite one.
I've got to say.

Speaker 5 (32:08):
I was just going to ask you about that.

Speaker 6 (32:10):
Have you ever been involved in coverage where there was
more emotion and what was the environment like there on Sunday?

Speaker 9 (32:19):
It was just it was amazing. I mean, I'm sure
you know it jumped out of the television. As for
your listeners who watch the Masters on TV, the excitement
and the drama. I mean, there's always a good leaderboard
at the Masters, right, and there's always a lot of
things happen on Sunday, especially on the back nine. We've
heard all the cliches, but this was just over the top,
with Rory hitting you know, some bad shots in that

(32:42):
final round, but bouncing back with great ones. And you know,
I wanted to ask Dennis specifically that shot he hit
on thirteen the wedge eighty two yards. He's aiming fifteen
yards left of the pin. And he hits it right
into Ray's Creek, and I just wanted to ask. One
golf pro told me that. I asked him why he
think that I thought that happened, and he said, grip pressure,

(33:03):
That's all he said. And I'm wondering if Dennis might
have a clue as to why Rory hit that shot
at that time.

Speaker 5 (33:10):
That has a lot to do with it grip pressure.

Speaker 4 (33:12):
However, I suspect that that round that he played was
under terrible pressure where that pressure was not only in
his grip, but.

Speaker 5 (33:24):
When you do that, really what really tends is up
are your shoulders? No release? It's going to go right.

Speaker 4 (33:33):
No different than what happened on that last shot on
eighteen where he's one hundred somebody yards away. I mean
he missed the green and then to show you how
bad that was, when he's in a playoff, he almost
holds it out, you know. So grip pressure is one
thing people breathing. I mean, you get, you lose. You know,

(33:54):
we used to say that, you know, when you get
in those pressure situations and the red light goes on,
you know, on the camera, and the fairway starts to
turn colors on you and all that sort of stuff.

Speaker 5 (34:07):
And so that's really happening.

Speaker 4 (34:10):
I mean, I don't think there's anybody that can really
relate to the pressure that existed there of what was
at stake when he won that. He's one of six
people now in the history, in the history of golf,
and at a time, as I mentioned earlier, where the
possibility of doing that in his era is phenomenal because

(34:33):
you know, he has to beat thirty people at least Tiger, Tenure,
Palmer and Nicholas. They had to be three or four
people all the time. Couldn't they couldn't compete. So what
he did was absolutely amazing. I'm so happy for him,
and the way he handled it was unreal.

Speaker 3 (34:52):
Yeah, Garry, I'm curious, and I think our listeners will
be too. As a media member that's covering the Masters,
at a guy, what is going on like that? Are
you watching it in the press room on the monitors?
Do you get outside at all to see them come up?
Are you inside ropes? How did how did you take

(35:12):
in the drama that was the second nine on Sunday?

Speaker 9 (35:16):
Yeah, that's a good question. You know, at the Masters,
it's the only tournament in the world that I know
of any way that the media does not have under
the ropes access. We're you know, we're fighting the galleries
and the crowds, just like all the spectators and patrons
on the ground, so it's really hard to see. I
always like to walk at least some of the course
every day. I watch some of it, you know, Sunday

(35:38):
morning with some other groups. But the Masters makes it
so easy in our in our press building to watch
it on monitors because we have two TV screens in
front of us. One of them has a leader board,
the up to date leader board, live leader board with
and you can dial up bios of any player, and
the other screen you can access ESPN, CBS, the Golf Channel,

(36:04):
the main interview room, and every hole on the back nine,
so you can see every shot that basically that's hit
between ten and eighteen among the final few groups. You
cannot do that if you try to walk the course
and watch so the last couple hours I'm always in
the media center watching. Unfortunately, I'd rather be on the course,
but it's the only way you can really do it properly.

Speaker 3 (36:26):
The final question for me, I don't know if then
if Paul will have one more, but this tournament that
will be out here six weeks from now, the MFAM
Championship with their new venue and format that will be
at play out here six weeks out. What are your
thoughts about what will go on here, not only with
the venue but also with the format.

Speaker 9 (36:46):
Yeah, I think it's really exciting. I know Steve touched
on it some of the things that are going to
happen and how the course will be set up earlier
in your show. I'm excited to see the team, the
two man teams. I know they're going to start to
be announced pretty soon here by the NFAM Championship. And
you know, we know that Steve is partnering with his
brother in law Mario, but I'm really excited to see

(37:08):
who all the other players partner with. And you know,
it's a complete unknown what's going to happen at this
golf course. It's a brand new golf course. I know
it's going to play tough, and as Steve said, there's
a lot of water and there's some force carries that
if they push the tea's back, are going to be
a lot tough for some of these guys they handle.
So I'm excited to see what the scoring would be like,

(37:29):
and how you know the team concept works. I think
it's gonna be a lot of fun.

Speaker 5 (37:32):
Dennis.

Speaker 6 (37:33):
I want to ask you about one potential team combination
that the rumor is they're going to play together, and
the strength of that Justin Leonard and Jerry Kelly.

Speaker 4 (37:45):
Well, I think that's a pretty strong team because they
hit it in a fair way.

Speaker 5 (37:51):
You know, you don't have to be long here. You
have to be accurate.

Speaker 4 (37:55):
Yeah, you're better off being shorter off the tea and
longer in the green than this business trying to hit
it on the green. The issue is going to come putting,
right Justin Leonard right, good putter. Jerry Kelly U.

Speaker 5 (38:10):
Sometimes good putter.

Speaker 4 (38:12):
When he starts to putt, he'll beat everybody, really, but
he I know he puts a lot of emotional a
lot of things. And but I think there's going to
be a real you know, it's not about length here,
you know, And some of these guys carrying it like
you say on number twelve. First of all, they aren't
going to play it from that far back. Second, it's

(38:33):
going to be downwind. Two seventy carried downwind not a
big item. But some of these other ones, you know,
into the wind eighteen nine six. I mean, some of
those might be difficult, but and I think they're going
to get an opportunity to play a a a US

(38:54):
Open type greens and setup because it is that we
put the pins in some places it's very difficult to
go at it.

Speaker 6 (39:05):
You better not be above the hole on seven.

Speaker 2 (39:07):
Oh well.

Speaker 4 (39:09):
Yeah, yeah, so they're gonna have to watch what's gone,
but they'll catch on. It's amazing after the first round
how players will adapt and all of a sudden, he's nothing.

Speaker 5 (39:19):
They will.

Speaker 6 (39:19):
Eric said, the rough is going to be three and
a half inches too.

Speaker 3 (39:22):
Yeah, what you know, Uh, keep the ball these guys.

Speaker 4 (39:28):
Remember these guys hit it pretty straight and if you
just keep it between the marsh.

Speaker 5 (39:34):
You're good.

Speaker 4 (39:34):
You know, it's going to be interesting about it, you know.
And I'm kind of looking forward to those two playing
together because they know they've played here before and you're
gonna have to play here once or twice in order
to nowhere to.

Speaker 2 (39:47):
Go get their way around.

Speaker 3 (39:48):
Gary Demato, We're going to look forward to visiting with

Speaker 9 (39:56):
By the way, not yet, I'm still working.

Speaker 4 (39:59):
Why because the other and the other thing is you.
People will still be outside the ropes.

Speaker 5 (40:03):
I'm not going in.

Speaker 9 (40:05):
Oh boy, oh boy, Thank.

Speaker 2 (43:38):
Another Hall of Famer. Abby Hendrickson from Forrest could be
a Hall of Famer. Little early. It's only fourteen.

Speaker 3 (43:45):
So she won the drive chip and Puck competition at
Augusta National What about three weekends ago. I just have
no concept of how like in that when you're there,
how did you keep emotions under check and to make
sure that that.

Speaker 2 (44:02):
Didn't get you.

Speaker 18 (44:03):
Yeah, it's definitely pretty nerve wracking, especially with the only
being six shots for drive, tip and pot. I was
shaken just about every shot. I don't know how I
kept it all in, but you know, I was just
trying to focus on the shot in front of me,
and I was just trying to, you know, remember my
back to my practicing days, you know, just telling myself
it's no different than what I've been practicing for.

Speaker 3 (44:25):
So I would think, maybe I'm wrong, maybe it'd be
different for Paul or Dennis. But I would think that
the most difficult of those shots is the chip. What
was like nerve from a nerve standpoint, which is the
most nervy.

Speaker 18 (44:39):
Yeah, I think the chip too, just says it's such
a short shot, you know, and you're trying to make
contact with the ball and get as close as possible
when you're so nervous. But I was fortunate enough to
step up and hit two great chips.

Speaker 2 (44:55):
Yeah, two of them close, right.

Speaker 6 (44:57):
Tell about the drives, the two drives.

Speaker 19 (44:59):
Yeah, so my first drive it hit a tree.

Speaker 18 (45:04):
It should have gone out of bounds is way, right,
but smoked a tree branch, came back into the fairway.
But then my second drive went out of bounds. So
if it hadn't been for that lucky bounce off of
the tree, I probably have come away with any points
for driving, so that was definitely huge.

Speaker 3 (45:21):
Talk to us about the process of getting there because
you had to qualify through what four or five different
the stage is, three different stages to get there.

Speaker 2 (45:29):
How did that work for you?

Speaker 18 (45:30):
Yeah, so there's a local, subregional, and regional qualifying and
they My first qualifier was at here Madison at Yahara Hills,
so that was pretty nice just to be so close
to home. But then so I went on from there
and then went to sub regional at the Legend at Bergamont,

(45:53):
and then I placed second and they take the top
two finishers from Bergamont and then you go to the
regional and then the winner of the goes to Augusta National.

Speaker 19 (46:02):
And yeah, so that's pretty cool.

Speaker 6 (46:05):
Cool now that you've had a little time to reflect
and think about it in terms of your playing golf
and that kind of thing, is there any way to
put into feelings what this has meant to you? What
have you thought about since you accomplished that.

Speaker 18 (46:19):
Yeah, it's definitely just been so surreal. I don't think
it's really even you know, completely sunk in. Yet I
still have to keep reminding myself that I wanted I
actually forgot. When I saw my friends the other day,
they're like, you want and I was like, oh, I
completely forgot about that. But no, Yeah, it's just been
so cool looking back at the whole experience and being
able to reflect on my time there Augusta. It was

(46:42):
more than anything I could have asked for.

Speaker 3 (46:44):
So Gary Demato wrote the stories. He talked about you
getting the cap in the in the sweatshirt, which I
think you're wearing right now, but you also get an
autograph from Jordan's speed.

Speaker 5 (46:55):
Is that right?

Speaker 2 (46:56):
Yeah?

Speaker 18 (46:56):
Yeah, So they give us practice round tickets to Monday,
and they called everyone off for rain at around eleven thirty.
So right as they were turning this away, Jordan Spieth
came around and like all the kids went and running
back for his autograph. But yeah, I got his autographs.
So yeah, he's been one of my favorite players.

Speaker 6 (47:17):
When you look ahead to your future in golf, what
do you see? What do you hope to accomplish?

Speaker 18 (47:22):
Yeah, I definitely have the golf playing d wont golf.
I think I'd like to play for a strong golf
program outside of college. I'm not really sure how far
I want to go yet. I do think teaching or
being a golf professional would be really cool.

Speaker 3 (47:38):
But yeah, that is so what is your golf game, like,
what's the strength of your game when you're playing traditional
rounds of golf rather than we're talking about the drive,
chip and putt.

Speaker 2 (47:49):
But your golf game, where is it?

Speaker 18 (47:51):
Yeah, I'd say one of my strengths with my golf
game is I'm definitely a longer hitter. From my age,
I'd say driving is probably my biggest strength when I
play around. This is what I've been most confident with
over the years, but also have been working really hard
on my putting.

Speaker 2 (48:10):
And I made one of the putts. Yeah, hold one
of the putts in the competition.

Speaker 6 (48:16):
Fantastic, Dennis, What advice would you give a young person
in terms of taking a look at their future ahead.
You've obviously instructed people, coach people and that kind of thing.
In this kind of situation, what would you say.

Speaker 4 (48:32):
I think she's on the right track and what she
just said, she's going to finish school, She's gonna you know,
you got to get that out of the way first,
you know, and then you can move on from there.
And the idea of playing d one golf is another
a good thing. Someplace where you know that she can
progress them. Advice would be to make sure at this

(48:52):
stage of her game that she gets into a development
process and it involves a coach, somebody coach you know.

Speaker 19 (49:01):
Yep, Joe Leonard over at the Oaks Golf.

Speaker 4 (49:03):
Of course, he's a good boy. Joe's a good boy
and he used to be here for a while. Uh
and uh, but that's what you'll need. Somebody there to
bring you along that ideally somebody who's been there before
who can tell you what you're going to see, not
from behind, but leads you down the road for a

(49:24):
little bit. So she's on the right track. But we
go back to those basics, you know again, faith, family, education, golf.
I mean, you know, I don't know what her faith particulable.
Obviously has a good family background, right, She's going to
go to school and then golf comes up. And if
you keep them in that order, then it works out
pretty good. You get up, you mix them up, it

(49:44):
doesn't work. And the best thing to do is enjoy
playing golf. And uh, if you just sit back, like
we talk about, you sit in a bank and watch
your enemies float by, you know, just sit back and
those people. Just you perform, the good ones will come
to you because there are people watching what you're doing. Uh,

(50:07):
the good ones are about six rows back. You know.

Speaker 5 (50:10):
They stay there and they stay there.

Speaker 4 (50:12):
They watch and they watch and they watch, and they
just wait for their opportunity to do to be there.
But you know, from what we can see, she's got
a great future going forward.

Speaker 2 (50:22):
I got I got two questions for you out the door.

Speaker 3 (50:24):
One, are you the best golfer in the family?

Speaker 2 (50:28):
Is that? Yes, I'd say so.

Speaker 3 (50:32):
Dad takes a Here're not old enough to drive, so
Dad drove you over here. Do you remember the first
time you beat him on the golf course?

Speaker 18 (50:39):
We don't play too much together anymore again because he
gave up, But I'll remember the first time there specifically
when I beat him. But you know there are a
few competitive runs out there between us.

Speaker 3 (50:52):
Yeah, and I'll finish with this. I know you've been
asked this question before, so I think you have an answer.
So if you were going to serve a champions dinner
after winning at Augusta, what would be on your menu?

Speaker 18 (51:05):
Yeah? I have been asked that before. I do Feticini,
Elfredo or some sort of Yeah, love Italian, some sort
of salad, and probably brownie is an ice cream for dessert.

Speaker 2 (51:20):
And you get to go there, you go, that's a win.
That's a win all the way around. And you get
to go back next year.

Speaker 3 (51:25):
Correct, because your practice round that you get tickets for

Oh, my gosh, I don't even know if there's a word.
Let some and all of is almost like having like
it's amazing. It's just so pristine. And I think one
thing I love is my favorite part about the Masters
was how they didn't allow phones on grounds, so just
everyone was so kind and friendly to talk to. You
could have a conversation with someone you've never met before

(52:17):
and they're just like really amazing. All the patrons were
just awesome.

Speaker 3 (52:21):

four nine, one thousand.

Speaker 3 (55:58):
Seg whether you at TPC was gone, We'll run this
up here in our final segment. Mike Keller, Faul Brown,
Dennis Dizziani. Let's talk about memberships. TPC Wisconsin is a
fantastic menu, not just the golf course, but with tennis
and the restaurants and the bar, and the fitness center
and the pool.

Speaker 2 (56:14):
All of it.

Speaker 3 (56:15):
And it's not just about the tournament. We're going to
spend a lot of time talking about the AMFAM Championship.
But where are you on memberships and how is TPC
Wisconsin set up right now?

Speaker 4 (56:25):
Well, we're happy to be part of TPC. You know,
there's thirty TPC courses in the world, so we're one
of those. It's a private club, there's no question about it.
But We do have a lot of people want to
play via of our passport program and the like, because
when you're a member here, you have access to the

(56:46):
other thirty courses to play, and then I guess they
might have another one hundred or two.

Speaker 5 (56:50):
But membership is really good and it's moving.

Speaker 4 (56:53):
Along almost two I don't want it to move it
too fast, you know, because you get an opportunity to
review all the applicants and all that starts. We have
one thousand and thirty three applicants for membership who have
requested information that we continue to go through, so we

(57:15):
feel good about it. And back to your point of
having a complete here includes a lot of things that
doesn't exist anywhere. We don't look at other courses in
the town here as competition. I think we would raise
the bar enough with the golf course and the amenities
that we have and the amenities that are still to come.

(57:35):
So I think that if you really want to play golf,
and if you want to have your kids learn how
to play golf and or tennis, it's a good place to.

Speaker 3 (57:44):
Be, fantastic place to be, and it's going to certainly
be featured on national TV in about six weeks for
those who want to come out and get it to
her in person.

Speaker 2 (57:53):
Now's a great time.

Speaker 3 (57:53):
You'll also see it on the national broadcast here in
just about a month and a half.

Speaker 2 (57:59):
Well, what a good debut here Steven, Gary and Abbey.

Speaker 5 (58:03):
And well Gary, Now that's a fun story.

Speaker 2 (58:06):
Careful now you might still be listening.

Speaker 3 (58:09):
Uh, We're gonna come back and do this thing again
next week. For Paul Brown and Dennis Dezziani are engineer
Dave mccannon. Mike Keller saying good night from TPC Wisconsin
on Talking Golf.

Speaker 5 (58:19):
